From the NAAA
Set your sights on Las Vegas for NAAA’s 2011 Convention Dec. 5–8 by Rick Richter, NAAA President, and Andrew Moore, NAAA Executive Director On behalf of the National Agricultural Aviation Association, we would like to invite all AgAir Update readers to attend NAAA’s 45th Annual Convention & Exposition in Las Vegas. Join us at the Las Vegas Hilton December 5-8 for the most entertaining, extravagant, informative, educational and exciting event in all of global agricultural aviation! With more than 25 hours of educational programming, 130 exhibitors and 1,000 aerial application professionals, you’ll be in good company when you attend NAAA’s 2011 Convention. NAAA’s Convention is the place to be to stay on top of the latest techniques and technologies, see the latest products and equipment on the market and forge partnerships with vendors and other applicators who can help you professionally. For a truly all-inclusive experience, stay at the Las Vegas Hilton. The Hilton is NAAA’s headquarters hotel and the site of all 2011 convention activities. Everything—and we mean everything— takes place within the confines of this spacious hotel, including meetings, social engagements and the trade show itself. Speaking of trade shows, the world’s largest agricultural aviation trade show just keeps getting larger. A record number of exhibitors participated in NAAA’s last two conventions, and they are pushing the limits again. Whether you plan on upgrading your GPS and GIS hardware and software, are in the market for a new aircraft or simply want to investigate new crop protection products available from different chemical companies, you’ll find what you’re after at NAAA’s 2011 Trade Show. To keep up on important changes affecting the industry, including
regulations, new application recommendations and manufacturers’ guidelines, as well as advances in aircraft engineering, application technology, crop protection products and more, you need the latest information. You’ll find it at the 2011 Convention. Top industry researchers will report on important field research they are conducting to help aerial applicators at the ASABE Technical Session Dec. 5. You will also be able to choose from among 25 hours of educational programming, including special sessions on avgas, the status of NPDES permit requirements, aerial firefighting and helicopters. Additional sessions cover chemicals, application technology, security, aircraft airframe and engine manufacturing, and more.
NAAA has lined up an impressive roster of speakers to entertain and inform you Looking for direction and guidance? Then Compaass Rose is for you! New, prospective and low-time ag pilots will have an opportunity to discuss ideas and philosophies about the business, make informed decisions about their future, and interact with some of the industry’s top operators at two Compaass Rose sessions Dec. 4 and Dec. 8, respectively. In addition, NAAA’s Job Fair Booth is a new addition to the trade show. New pilots can post their résumés and operators looking for pilots can post job notices. Be sure to stop by Booth 231. NAAA has lined up an impressive
roster of speakers to entertain and inform you, including SR-71 pilot Brian Shul, futurist Bob Treadway and air medical examiner Dr. Mark Ivey. Wait until you hear the story of our Kickoff Speaker, Brian Shul. Brian survived a horrific plane crash and battled through a painful recovery period. Not only did he make it back into the cockpit, he went on to scale some of the highest heights ever in the SR-71, the world’s fastest jet. His message about living fearlessly and making the most of each day is sure to strike a chord with everybody in the audience. Be sure to sign up for the Kickoff Breakfast. You’ll hear from two great speakers at our Dec. 6 General Session. Futurist Bob Treadway will lead a fascinating discussion on the future of agriculture. Dr. Ivey will provide expert advice on a range of pilot health issues, including fatigue and the need for proper sleep. Our Live Auction is always exciting and fun. It is also the single most important fundraiser for NAAA and WNAAA. Last year’s auction was truly record-breaking, raising $460,000. Whether we’ll hit that figure again remains to be seen, but our auction contributors seem intent on giving it a go. A P&W 985 Piston Engine donated by Tulsa Aircraft Engines and two full-service hot section inspections (HSIs) for a small and large PT6 from Pratt & Whitney Canada highlight a growing list of auction items. After long convention days, you’ll be ready to unwind, and NAAA can help with that too. We’ve got wall-to-wall receptions, including the Welcome Reception (Dec. 5), Live Auction Reception (Dec. 6), Pratt & Whitney Canada Reception (Dec. 6), GE Aviation “Boot Scootin’ Party” (Dec. 7) and Farewell Reception (Dec. 8). With the exception of the Farewell Reception, these are decidedly informal affairs. Best
of all, they’re open to every attendee. As you can see, there will be no shortage of opportunities to kick back and visit with old friends and make new acquaintances. The theme of this year’s convention is “Ag Aviation: America’s Winning Hand.” Unfortunately, Mother Nature did not deal a very strong hand to many applicators and growers this year. 2011 tested aerial applicators’ mettle. Ag pilots are a resilient bunch, though. You deserve a reward for making it through what’s been a tough year for operations in many parts of the country. Joining your peers for NAAA’s 45th Annual Convention & Exposition is the perfect present to yourself and a fitting way to begin preparing for the 2012 season. That’s just a taste of what you’ll find at NAAA’s 45th Annual Convention & Exhibition. You’ll find much more information within these pages and on NAAA’s website at www.agaviation.org. Please join us for what promises to be an unforgettable week! Register for NAAA’s 2011 Convention by returning the pre-registration form found in this section or online at www. agaviation.org. You may also register by calling NAAA at 202-546-5722. Look for the convention registration button right on the homepage.

Don’t roll the dice and miss this year’s NAAA convention and exhibition Welcome to AgAir Update’s 19th consecutive show guide, designed exclusively to promote NAAA’s 45th Annual Convention and Exhibition. It is back to Las Vegas this year! Come one, come all and try your luck. Attending NAAA’s Convention and Exhibition is not a gamble and is guaranteed to bring you better luck next year, even for those who “make” their luck. This year’s NAAA Annual Convention and Exhibition promises to be exceptional. As you read through the pages of AgAir Update’s 2011 NAAA Show Guide, you will discover all the exceptional events scheduled. This includes what exhibitors have planned, as well as the speakers NAAA has lined

up for attendees. If you have not already made your arrangements to attend, it is not too late. You will find registration forms in this show guide. The official dates are December 5 - 8, 2011. You will want to be sure to make your host Hilton Hotel reservations as soon as possible. Be sure to stop by AgAir Update’s booth #713. I look forward to talking with each of you. Graham has plans that even I am not aware of yet. I’m sure he’ll be shooting videos each day to post on agairupdate.com, as well as distribute in AgAir Update’s special convention eEditions. These eEditions will bring you highlighted coverage of the convention each day, with video interviews and
candid photographs. You’ll want to wave at friends that didn’t make it to the convention! Be sure to bring a smile! This year also promises a great NAAA auction. Once again, item donations have topped $140,000 in value. These items include two Hot Section Inspections (HSIs) from P&WC, as well as a newly overhauled R-985 engine from Tulsa Aircraft Engines. Other notable auction items include a Wayne Handley agrobatics course, a P-51D Mustang ride with Tim McPherson, ground adjustable pump fan and brake from Lane Aviation, $15,000 gift certificate toward an engine overhaul from Covington Aircraft Engines and a P-40 Corsair ride from Fighters & Legends, LLC. (I think there may be
a Lifetime AgAir Update subscription included in there somewhere). There is one last comment that I would like to leave with you and have done so every year in this editorial. Attending an NAAA Convention and Exhibition with an open mind will easily offset the costs by learning new and better ways to operate a flying service or fly a field. You can’t set a monetary value on the networking that takes place during this time. Don’t miss this once a year opportunity. See ya in Las Vegas in December!

Transland continues a 50-year tradition of building quality products focused on helping operators improve their profit margins and offering ease of operation. This year, we will be showing some of our latest developments in the fire gate product line. Extensive design and testing has gone into development of these new gateboxes, comments and field test results show vast improvement over other fire gate applications in the market. Last year we introduced the Quick-Release Boom Hanger Clamps, and this year we have added Stainless Steel Boom Hangers to our line. Other products you will see at the Transland booth include our new center boom design with a quick-disconnect [QD] cap, and a new strainer design with the QD cap. Transland general manager Roberto Rodriguez says “the QD cap allows operators to clean and change screens with ease, and as with all our other new products, a focus on keeping ground time to a minimum.” Transland sends out a big thank you to all our customers who continue to support our company and our industry. Electronics International
Advance engine monitoring system Electronics International manufactures the most advanced glass panel engine monitoring system available for turboprop aircraft. The MVP-50T system monitors every engine parameter, plus a ton of extras. In addition to the MVP-50T’s seemingly endless ability to monitor and analyze every critical parameter, it also has an onboard annunciator panel. If any parameter climbs (or drops) out of normal operating ranges, the MVP-50T will alert the pilot visually and audibly.
Systems screen The System Screen offers pilots up-to-the-minute information for auxiliary functions. If one of the functions being monitored on the System Screen exceeds a redline limit or enters a cautionary zone, the MVP-50T will visually and audibly alert the pilot.
Checklists Custom, interactive checklists enhance cockpit safety and help create a paperless cockpit environment. The MVP-50T places a checkmark next
to each checklist entry as you step through each checklist. Checklists can be easily created on a computer and uploaded through the MVP-50T’s USB interface.
Weight and balance calculations Weight and Balance calculations are such a hassle that many pilots frankly don’t perform them as the law requires. The MVP-50T takes the hassle out of the equation by allowing the pilot to input weights into pre-mapped aircraft locations. The result is a page of Weight and Balance information, as well as the associated W&B envelope.
Total fuel management The MVP-50T offers pilots up-to-date fuel management information, including: Fuel Flow, Fuel Used During Flight, Fuel Used Since Last Fill Up, Gallons Per Mile, Fuel to Next Waypoint, Time, Distance and Fuel to Empty and Fuel Remaining.

I’m sure many of you have heard the 80-10-10 story that I tell when it comes to drift reduction products: 80% of the time nothing happens, 10% of the time the result is worse, and 10% of the time there is a definite improvement. Laboratory results may be better, but actual field experience has been pretty close to this. Arkansas S.A.F.E. clinics have included one day of field evaluations of drift potential for years. These evaluations have included a variety of different equipment setups and operating variables and typically include the favored drift reduction additives for the area. The data has been quite sporadic and probably a reflection of the variety of setups, weather conditions, mixing
procedures, and operating variables. With all that said, there have been a few products that consistently show a positive response. Control™ from Garrco Products, Inc. has been one of the products that has consistently shown a reduction in drift potential. A replicated field study was initiated last year to look at nineteen different drift control additives and water with two aircraft. The aircraft were selected to give two separate speed scenarios, 115 and 150 mph. A preliminary report of this study was presented at a NAAA/ASAE joint technical meeting. I encourage everyone to obtain a copy of that report, available through links on the NAAA web page, and see how their favorite product performed. Control™ was one of the top performing products in this study. The key to consistency can also hinge back to how well products perform under real field situations. Arkansas had
Control
many operators utilizing Control™ as a drift control additive last year. Some of the comments I hear are: “Best material I’ve ever used, Very easy to mix and load, The material that I used to get on the windshield is gone, and Where can I get some Control™?” When one starts hearing these types of comments, there may be more to the performance than just good lab results. I was visiting a couple of different operators during the season and overheard conversations where they were either going to borrow some Control™ from someone else’s pallet until their shipment came in or another operator was coming to borrow some from them. This alone may tell the true story on performance. Mixing and compatibility are one of the major issues with any drift reduction additive. John Garr, Jeff Tidwell, and I met at Tidwell Flying Service in Lonoke, Arkansas on a very cold morning just prior to the AAAA annual convention
to try several different tank mixes. John has some new products under development and the mix results on those are another story, but we tried every way we could think of to cause mix problems with Control™without success. Control™ mixed very easily under all scenarios even with almost ice-cold water! I have had any number of operators ask me which drift control products are best. I’m not so sure there is a best product. Remember there are many application variables. I would recommend that operators try to select a product that consistently shows positive results. Also, additives alone are not the complete answer. Properly utilized, they may provide an extra margin of safety. Operators should use every tool possible to avoid drift. Proper equipment setup and operation will always play a dominant role.

Easy maintenance and efficient ZEE Systems introduces its new Z33-8900 Motor Compressor and Z33-89600 Motor Compressor Condenser assemblies with brushless DC variable speed drive motor and direct drive scroll compressor. This system is built for easy maintenance and efficient operation. The motor is more efficient with built in soft start and the scroll compressor means a lower starting and running current. No brushes to change. No pulleys and belts to adjust. With the optional controller the motor speed can be adjusted for desired cooling at the lowest possible current. The Z33-8900 Motor Compressor will be used in all future designs. The SZ43, SZ58 and Z99 drive motors will be phased out with continued parts support planned through mid-2011. The Z33-8900 is designed to easily retrofit current motor compressor designs.

Brian Shul will address aerial applicators as the Kickoff Speaker at NAAA’s 2011 Convention & Exposition.Brian Shul, NAAA’s 2011 Kickoff Speaker, has captivated audiences nationwide with his story of perseverance and triumph over tragedy. He emerged from the wreckage of a near fatal plane crash deep in the jungles of Vietnam to scale some of the highest heights ever in the SR-71, the world’s fastest, highest-flying jet. In 1974, Shul’s AT-28 aircraft was shot down near the Cambodian border. He was badly burned and near death when a Special Forces team rescued him. Told he would never fly again, Shul underwent 15 major surgeries and spent a year in the hospital recovering from his burn injuries. After countless hours of physical therapy, he was back flying fighter jets with the Air Force just two days after his release. He went on to fly everything from the A-7 to the F-5 and taught as an Air Force flight instructor before capping his military career by being selected to fly the SR-71 “Blackbird,” A secret spy plane capable of flying at altitudes
above 80,000 feet and speeds in excess of 2,000 mph. Pilots had to undergo an astronaut type physical just to qualify, and Shul passed with no waivers. He is one of only 93 pilots to ever fly the famed spy plane. Brian Shul, who piloted the famed SR-71 Blackbird, is the Kickoff Speaker for the National Agricultural Aviation Association’s 2011 Convention in Las Vegas. When he retired from the Air Force in 1990, Shul published a book about what it was like to fly the SR-71 called “Sled Driver,” which contained rare photos and became the most popular book on the plane ever written. Shul started his speaking career back in the Air Force by telling his story. When he got out of the Air Force he pursued photography and writing and fell into public speaking because people were fascinated with his slide show. In the years since he has become a highly sought after speaker on the aviation circuit and by business, medical and church groups. As a pilot and a nature photographer,

Flock Buster repels birds
Save your crops and increase your yields! Birds have been a problem for growers as far back as anyone can remember. Whether it is through partial or complete crop loss, birds are responsible for decreased profits and not to mention, countless headaches. With no signs of this feeding frenzy slowing, one must question, “What can be done about these troublesome birds?” A company in West Fargo, ND has the answer: “Flock Buster.” Flock Buster, a bird pest control product which is the first of its kind, is a 100% ecological friendly bird repellent that can be used anywhere birds are undesirable. Either mixing for farm aerial distribution or ground sprayer distribution, Flock Buster is easy to use and proven effective.
Flock Buster is an extremely valuable tool for bird management in sunflowers, corn, wheat and rice as well as Canadian Geese feeding on corn, grain, beans and sunflowers. In its third season, Flock Buster has already helped numerous farmers reclaim their fields. Flock Buster has many uses outside of the agricultural industry as well. The product has proven to be an essential part of an effective wildlife management program assisting airports with bird control. Flock Buster is also useful in eliminating birds at landfills, golf courses, marinas, parks and any other outdoor recreational areas. For more information on Flock Buster, visit the company’s website at www. flockbuster.com or call 877-NO-CROWS.

What’s the buzz? Dennie Stokes says… What’s the buzz about the Cascade Pressure Cowl (CPC)? Dennie Stokes, past NAAA President, V.P. at Mid-Continent Aircraft Corp. in Hayti, MO, a very successful ag pilot and advocate for the air ag industry this year installed the CPC on one of their 510 Thrush. When the OAT began to rise, his decision to upgrade his 510 with the Pressure Cowl really shined. Dennie said “When the OAT was 102 degrees, I was able to carry a full load, pull full torque and not temp out…what more do you need to know!” Dennie joins a growing list of turbine owners who are seeing tremendous benefits from installing the CPC on their aircraft. When the OAT climbs, the ability to haul a full load, pull full torque and not temp out pays big dividends! After flying a new factory Thrush both with factory inlet and CPC, Dennie said “It is
just amazing to me that you couldn’t look at the data and see that this (Cascade Pressure Cowl) is obviously a positive because your engine is doing two things: the engine is performing the way you are paying for it to perform and you are buying time on the motor – any time the engine has to work less, as the temperature is down and the Ng is down, is obviously more time that the engine is going to be capable of running. There is no doubt about it. As soon as I took the prop out of feather into pitch I watched the manometer reading climb from -0.8 to positive 7.56 (inches of water column). As the prop went forward, I could follow that line going up on the manometer as the prop started making thrust.” “If an operator will just evaluate the data and do it honestly and fairly, any operator who sits in the seat
Dennie Stokes - Vice President Mid-Continent Aircraft Hayti, MO G.Lavender, photo
understands that you can make redline torque under any conditions, where as before you weren’t able to. I don’t care who you are, it takes horsepower to make the plane fly. There is a point where you don’t have any more tricks up your sleeve
and it is a matter of horsepower, and torque is horsepower.” There is so much more to the report and there is a buzz building about the Cascade Pressure Cowl. Ask Cascade for more information or talk to Dennie Stokes.

Ag-Nav Inc.
Booth
Ag-Nav offers reliable service and support The Ag-Nav Inc. team invites you to visit us at Booth # 110 during the 45th NAAA convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. FREE navigation demo software and GIS post-processing software will be available to all visitors. Visitors to our booth will also have the opportunity to see our new products and will be able to speak with our staff. Our customer loyalty speaks volumes for the quality of products we have delivered in the past and the experience obtained during these years will guarantee that every product manufactured by Ag-Nav Inc. will have 100% satisfaction. When you purchase from Ag-Nav, we offer you reliable factory service and support as well as free software updates for the life of your product. This year, Ag-Nav Inc. is pleased to introduce the new and improved TRACKERNAV system. This system is designed like no other tracking system without operational costs. TRACKERNAV is an advanced Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) system designed with fleet management in mind. GPS technology and airwave communication technology provide for a robust, scalable system with no up-front telemetry costs. TRACKERNAV consists of an in-vehicle GPS receiver coupled with a modem. Combined with TRACKERNAV software on your PC, TRACKERNAV puts you in control of your data from anywhere in the world and when you want to see it. Other AVL systems store data off site which can lead to costly, monthly data hosting fees. When deployed as part of a fleet management system, TRACKERNAV delivers accurate real-time information enabling route planners to compare where the vehicle should be and where the vehicle actually is. Our SPRAYVIEWW software has been very successful with helping our clients interface applied data to Google Earth. During the 2011 season many customers used this software to get accurate maps and geo-referenced data for their
34 E
agairupdate.com
applications by interfacing with Google Maps. With SPRAYVIEWW, data analysis is easy and reporting is better than with other more costly agriculture GIS software on the market. Many of our clients have asked for the automatic booms on/off technology to be able to use geo-referenced maps with exclusion zones and such. This year we delivered a fully automatic on/ off valve that reacts in a fraction of a second to the map’s information during the application. This allows for the pilot to just fly the lines and maintain the guidance line accuracy. This makes the system fully automatic along with our automatic AG-FLOW control and our navigation system.
Visit us at our booth #110, we will have several systems on display for you to interact with. The SMART BAR hardware suits the requirements for fixed wing aircraft and helicopters. We have produced a small, medium and large size NAV-BAR. They are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and are able to give you four alphanumeric messages with four digits for each selection; thus, displaying more accurate information in real time. This new design is brighter than any other intelligent light bar on the market. It is lightweight and aerodynamically designed to fit any type of aerial application aircraft. A new light bar will be shown at the NAAA. All models will be on display at Booth # 110. When you visit us at our booth, we will have several systems on display for you to interact with, such as the popular Ag-Nav GUIA “GOLD” model for aerial application. The Ag-Nav GUIA is a DGPS navigation system designed to meet
110
and exceed specific requirements for guidance in aerial applications. Features such as the USB port allows for fast uploading and downloading of files, saving you time and money. One USB stick can store data for a whole season, making the Ag-Nav GUIA very safe and reliable. No data cards, no PCMCIA, no memory cards to carry or lose, just a plain USB key will do the trick. With the Ag-Nav GUIA, your data stays in the hard drive until you decide otherwise. Unlike other heavy and bulky systems on the market, the Ag-Nav GUIA is packaged in a compact single unit to save space and reduce weight. The user-friendly software makes it easy to navigate through menus for set-up and real-time application and its built-in light bar is useful, convenient and sufficient for some operations. Installation and removal are done in a snap! The Moving Map Display has a rugged design to withstand G forces and vibration from any aircraft, unlike some models on the market today that are made with plastic structures that fatigue with time. The screen delivers bright color in daylight and adjusts for night flying when necessary. NO VIRUS - The operating system for the Ag-Nav GUIA allows pilots to navigate through menus with relative ease. It runs on a LINUX platform; thus, there are no attacks from viruses most common in Windows operating systems. The Ag-Nav GUIA uses features with full data logging that has proven userfriendly and successful in agricultural, forestry, geophysics, mosquito control and many other airborne applications. TOWERS AND OBSTACLES – Ag-Nav Inc. has developed an application that allows you to load all USA towers above 200 feet as per FAA data files. This is also true for worldwide towers if the information is available, please see one of our staff for more information… The FLIGHTMASTER navigation system has been designed to meet mosquito control aerial application specific
requirements in the battle against field infestation. This system carries an on-board weather station (AIMMS20) and provides real-time information on wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, temperature and barometric pressure. Data is updated on every pass and displayed on a Moving Map during navigation. FLIGHTMASTER provides the pilot with swath, directional guidance and other navigational information required to carry out precise aerial applications. The FORESTMASTER works in similar fashion, but with features geared for forestry application. The AG-FLOW automatic flow control system has been designed to ensure a steady distribution of application rates by automatically adjusting its flow. This system consists of a flow meter or sensor, a valve and DC motor to adjust the valve position, and a controller box. The flow rate is adjusted automatically by the valve position; thus, controlling the required flow to the spray booms. The controller box is a state-of-the-art computer which has serial ports and CAN bus technology used for communications with other systems. The simple and easy installation process guarantees that the AG-FLOW is ready to use right after installation as calibration is very fast and effective. The AG-FLOW is also capable of variable rate application. Looking into the future, we wonder if there is a need for a full autopilot AgNav system…we are working on it and will be revealed to the industry by the end of 2012. For more information on the above systems and other Ag-Nav products such as FIRE-NAV, TRAX-NAV, GROUND-NAV, LI-NAV and PHOTONAV, please visit us at NAAA Booth # 110 or contact us today at 1-800-99 AGNAV (24628). Centrally located in Los Angeles since its inception, our shop continues to be the leader in providing quality and dependable overhauls of Continental W-670 and Pratt & Whitney R-985 and R-1340 engines. We have the most complete facilities in the country with an engine shop equipped to do our own inspections such as Magnetic Particle (Magnaflux) Dye Penetrant (Zyglo), Ultrasonic and Dimensional. Our machine shop is the best equipped of its kind, with cam and cylinder grinder, balancing machines and much, much more.
Aero-Engines is the home of the Super 600, officially known as the Vintage Radials altered Pratt & Whitney R-1340. The engine incorporates a modified version of Pratt & Whitney R-2800 cylinders, thus increasing reliability and performance of the engine. The increased cooling fin capacity, higher rated manifold pressure, larger valves, forged heads, higher horsepower rating and increased compression ratio of the R-2800 cylinders is quite an improvement over the original R-1340 cylinders. The Super 600 engine, approved under STC SE01200LA, is rated at the same horsepower as the stock R-1340, but operators of the 25 engines in existence believe there are some “hidden horses” that can provide a boost when needed. Presently these engines are being used on Air Tractors, Ag-Cats and Thrush aircraft. We serve you with pleasure; confident we can supply you with the quality engine to suit your needs. Paying attention to nozzle and check valve care Even CP® Nozzles and Check Valves don’t last forever and they do need maintenance. If there were such a thing as an airworthiness directive for aerial spray equipment, more attention would be paid to nozzle and check valve care. There are several ways to determine whether maintenance is needed. First, just look at them. Are they cracked? Are the deflector edges rough? Do the flat fan stainless inserts still have an even elliptical shape? Do they drip? Second, charge the boom. Is the spray even on each of the nozzles? Do the check valves shut quickly on all the nozzles? Check all the deflector angles on CP-03/09s. Are the patterns even with no breaks? On CP-11TTs, do the tips still have a good pattern and appear to be flowing the same? Third, flow check the orifices and tips.
Are the flow rates even, nozzle to nozzle? Are they close to what they were when new? If nozzle or check valve bodies are cracked, they will leak and should be replaced. If deflector surfaces are nicked, patterns will be irregular and droplet spectra will change. Deflectors can be replaced. Stainless inserts in flat fan tips wear out and the wear will be uneven. The patterns and flow rates won’t be as accurate as those in good shape. Replacement flat fan tips are available. If nozzles drip and the cause is not cracked bodies, debris or loose tension, chances are the white Teflon® seals are scratched. Seals are available. On CP-03/09s, the beveled side of the seals goes against the body (remember “B” to “B”). Seals on the CP-11TT cannot be installed backward. Before taking
CP-11TTs apart, put a shop rag on the table so that the detent ball isn’t lost. Before reassembling them, lubricate the detent hole with marine grease or similar product.
Check valve maintenance should be done annually. The Company uses torque wrenches when assembling nozzles and swivels. The wrenches are set at 15” pounds. Failure to tighten nozzle bodies may cause leaking or contamination of the Teflon® body seals. Too much tension on the nuts may cause the studs to pull. Replacement of the nozzles is the only option, if that happens.
Check valve maintenance should be done at least annually. There is one o-ring in the stainless core and one on the needle just under the diaphragms. There is one Teflon® seal and one Viton seal on the needle. All these parts should be replaced. Be sure the cap is very tight after replacing the parts. Do a “catch” test to verify the nozzles are flowing correctly. Both CP-03/09 orifices and tip stainless inserts will eventually wear. Gradual decreases in pressure required to do common rates indicates wear on those parts. They should be replaced. The most important component of nozzle and check valve maintenance is the care given throughout the season. Keep them clean and debris free and they will last a very long time.

GE Aviation’s H80 turboprop engine completes certification testing GE Aviation has completed all engine certification testing, including design assurance, development, operability and environmental tests, for its new H80 turboprop engines. “The H80 engine has performed extremely well in ground certification testing at GE’s Prague facility in the Czech Republic. GE Aviation has accumulated more than 800 ground test hours and more than 10,000 cycles on the development engines,” said Paul Theofan, president and managing executive of GE Aviation’s Business & General Aviation Turboprops. “Flight testing continues on the Thrush 510G aircraft, and we look forward to entry into service in the coming months.” The development program consisted of more than 25 full or partial engine builds, with testing that included lowcycle fatigue, hot section endurance, operability, component and endurance testing. The H80 engine will be GE’s first engine to be developed and manufactured outside the US and its first engine to receive European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification before the US Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) certification. The H80 engine combines the elegant, robust design of the M601 engine with GE’s 3-D aerodynamic design techniques and advanced materials to create a more powerful, fuel-efficient, durable engine compared with the M601 engine, with no fuel nozzle inspections and no hot section inspection. The H80 engine will also feature an extended service life of 3,600 flight-hours or 6,600 cycles between overhauls, significantly enhanced hot-day takeoff performance and high-altitude cruise speeds. The H80
will provide the option of a single- or dual-acting governor, allowing customers the flexibility in propeller selection. Beyond the Thrush 510G application, the H80 engine will also power Aircraft Industries’ L410-UVP-E20, a twin-engine commuter aircraft, and Technoavia’s newly designed Rysachok aircraft, a twinengine, 10-seat general aviation aircraft. The Business & General Aviation Turboprops team has continued its efforts to expand its customer and product support offerings. Premier Turbines is the Designated Repair Center in North and South America for M601 and H80 turboprop engines and offers heavy repair services, exchange engines and rentals, line replacement unit (LRU) rotable pools and field service support to current M601 and future H80 customers.
In 2011, GE Aviation signed Authorized Service Center agreements with Alagro Fumigaciones in Argentina, Solo Aviation in Venezuela, TAM Aviacao Executiva in Brazil, AG Aero in Australia and Cutter Aviation within the Southwest US. Meet the people behind the planes As aerial applicators and others involved in agricultural aviation gather in Las Vegas, a “to-do item” for many will be to stop by the Air Tractor exhibit during the NAAA Exposition. As in years past, visitors will see several familiar faces beneath the circling Air Tractor model airplane. Sadly though, one well-known face will be missed. In the early days of Air Tractor, Leland Snow was “the main man.” He wore many hats and did many jobs, from purchasing and engineering to the final “shake-down” inspection and even delivery of the aircraft to the customer. As the company grew he delegated many of these responsibilities and built a strong management team. He relied on
the experience, knowledge, and strengths of these employees to keep things running smoothly under his guidance. Now that he is gone, these people, along with the rest of the 260 employee-owners of Air Tractor are carrying on Leland’s vision to build the world’s best ag aircraft. We thought you might like to see and learn about a few of the people “behind the scenes,” who play a big part in keeping aircraft rolling out the doors and flying over farmland in America and around the globe. So here’s a run down of some of the other faces of Air Tractor, the people behind the friendly voice on the phone or the e-mail address who work to make Air Tractor second to none.
Jim Hirsch Air Tractor President Years at Air Tractor: 19 Now some nine months into his new role, Jim Hirsch says the company continues with the new product initiatives begun by Leland Snow. Jim is directing product engineering and working with Air Tractor’s management team on strategic planning. “These several past months of my transition –- and for all of us at Air Tractor -- were made a lot easier because Leland, not surprisingly, had a well thought-out succession plan that left us in a strong position. So we’re ‘workin’ the plan’ as we move into 2012.”
Rick Turner Vice President Operations Years at Air Tractor: 24
Rick keeps a constant eye on Air Tractor’s aircraft production schedule, seeing that the myriad of raw materials, parts, component systems, and labor for nine aircraft models all come together on the Air Tractor assembly lines to keep airplanes moving toward their completion and timely delivery to Air Tractor dealers. Rick says 141 aircraft will roll out the doors by the end of this year, and he projects another record production run of 175 aircraft in 2012.
David Ickert Vice President Finance Years at Air Tractor: 22 Financing is a crucial part of any aircraft order, and David Ickert has worked for many years to provide U.S. and international Air Tractor customers a variety of commercial and import/export financing options to help close the deal. Today, international sales comprise more than 50 percent of new Air Tractor sales, which translates into 260 quality jobs that remain here in the United States.
Kristin Edwards Vice President Sales Years at Air Tractor: 19 Rising crop commodity prices for the past several years have been a catalyst for new ag aircraft purchases. And Kristin Edwards is working to assure that where there’s an interest in new agricultural aircraft, an Air Tractor dealer is not far away. To that end, Air Tractor had a major presence at the South American Ag Convention in June, with three Air Tractor dealers represented at the event, which is the largest agricultural aviation convention in South America.

Leon Clinton Vice President Machining Operations Years at Air Tractor: 19 The machining of parts produced at Air Tractor and at the company’s subcontractor machine shops are the responsibility of Leon Clinton. He not only oversees machining operations, but also writes the specs, approves purchase orders and assures the metallurgical integrity of steel used in critical components such as spar caps and landing gear. From one day to the next, Leon is working to reduce the time and cost of producing parts while improving their quality, uniformity and service life. For the past 15 years Leon has directed Air Tractor’s turbine engine project.
David Ligon Engineering Manager Years at Air Tractor: 10 As Engineering Manager at Air Tractor, David Ligon directs and supervises engineering and design projects at Air Tractor. David has been a Project Engineer at Air Tractor for almost 11 years. He has been closely involved in the development of some of Air Tractor’s most notable new aircraft, including the Air Tractor AT-504 two-seat trainer, the AT-1002 1000-gallon capacity aerial application aircraft, and the AT-802U utility aircraft.
Jeff Dobbs Customer Service Manager Years at Air Tractor: 16 Jeff Dobbs says the favorite part about his job is talking with Air Tractor owners and dealers from around the world and getting to know them better. Jeff is the “go-to guy” for spare parts or customer service. Beyond getting parts shipped and delivered when they’re needed to all points of the globe, he can bring to bear the expertise of Air Tractor’s customer service team to help with aftermarket parts inquiries and technical questions.
Mike Rhodes Chief Pilot Years at Air Tractor: 10 Spending just about as much time in the air as he does on the ground, Mike Rhodes is the production line and experimental flight test pilot at Air Tractor. He’s been with the company since 2001. His early years at Air Tractor were spent in the engineering department. Today, Mike’s aeronautical engineering background, analytical skills and flying ability help assure that Air Tractor aircraft are safe, productive and that they all perform as they were designed to do.
Robert Salyers Quality Manager
Donald Cagle Senior Group Leader Years at Air Tractor: 35 One of three Senior Group Leaders at Air Tractor, Don Cagle oversees Plant 1 production of AT-402, AT-502, AT-504 and AT-602 aircraft. He is also the group leader of Air Tractor’s weld shop.
Mike Kimbro Senior Group Leader Years at Air Tractor: 36 Plant 2 and Plant 2A are where the big AT-802 is built and assembled, and Mike Kimbro keeps those lines moving and the 802 aircraft rolling out the door. Mike is also in charge of the wing fabrication shop at Air Tractor.
In May, Robert (Bob) Salyers moved into the Quality Manager role at Air Tractor. A familiar face in ag aviation circles for many years, Salyers brings a wealth of aviation experience to the job, and a sharp focus on maintaining Air Tractor’s long-standing reputation for consistent high quality. Salyers’ duties include responsibility for maintaining product quality across the entire Air Tractor line and assuring that aircraft are in full compliance with all FAA regulations.
Bo Snyder Senior Group Leader Years at Air Tractor: 37 Bo Snyder works in Air Tractor’s R&D department, where the AT-1002 and AT-802U are currently being refined. With decades of experience and skill as a master sheet-metal fabricator and mechanic, Bo works on continuing improvements that are incorporated into new Air Tractor aircraft.

BASF
223 BASF Three keys to proper off-season Three keys to proper off-season preparation forapplicators applicators preparation for Booth
BOOTH
Important to be ready for a demanding 2012 Aerial applicators around the country spend a great deal of the off-season months planning ahead for the start of their season, a change in crops to be sprayed, or perhaps a heightened demand for their services. Tony Goede, BASF Aerial Manager, indicates that for the upcoming application season, being prepared is as important as ever. “We’ve noticed a heightened demand for products that will be applied aerially next season,” Goede said. “And that means applicators are going to be busy making sure they have everything lined up well in advance. This year could be as busy or busier than any in recent history.” Below, Goede shares three preparation tips applicators should consider annually.
1. AGGRESSIVELY CHECK EQUIPMENT AND CALIBRATION Aerial applicators should ensure they and their equipment are ready for the upcoming season by attending events such as the annual Operation S.A.F.E. (Self-Regulating Application and Flight Efficiency) fly-ins held around the country. Operation S.A.F.E. clinics provide operators and pilots an opportunity to test equipment with a trained analyst to help interpret the information and recommend changes to improve performance. Held regularly throughout the year, the fly-ins help applicators learn about and comply with all pertinent legal requirements. “Applicators can attend Operation S.A.F.E. fly-ins to ensure their equipment is calibrated and their planes are in top working condition,” Goede said. “Fly-ins are a great opportunity for applicators and one of the best means of evaluating spray patterns, droplet size and application precision to maximize performance and stewardship.”
48 E
agairupdate.com
2. GET COMFORTABLE WITH NEW TECHNIQUES The old adage, “the only constant is change,” definitely applies to aerial application. Applicators should be as prepared as possible for change. Goede recommends applicators spend extra time learning the ins and outs of new equipment and products. “We expect applicators to increase their reliance on work order management systems to help manage orders and map field locations,” Goede said. “To get comfortable with the system, work with your retailers in advance of the application season.” Goede explains it’s important to acknowledge and prepare for treatment trends among growers as well. “We saw an increase in the percentage of acres sprayed this year, and we expect that number to increase in 2012 as well,” he said. “Make sure the loading crew and everyone involved is aware of the correct product rates and reviews the label for proper application.”
3. OPEN THE LINES OF COMMUNICATION Planning ahead is about more than just getting equipment and oneself ready for the season — it’s also important to prepare those you’ll be working together with. Often, simply planning ahead and communicating early with retailers and growers to envision future scheduling will help enhance the relationship. “Pre-scheduling and building a reputation with retailers is becoming a necessity for successful applicators,” Goede said. “Communicating with your business partners can help turn an average season into a great one.”
BASF SUPPORTS AERIAL APPLICATION INDUSTRY BASF has committed to supporting the aerial application industry through a variety of activities to continually educate applicators and increase safety within the industry. Through Operation S.A.F.E. fly-ins and scholarship opportunities, BASF continues to support the industry’s growing future. The BASF scholarship program is another way BASF is helping build the future of agricultural aviation, and is an integral part of the BASF partnership with NAAA (National Agricultural Aviation Association). This scholarship is designed to help NAAA operators bring new pilots into the field and help in their training to become part of the aerial application industry. “Our support of the scholarship program and the fly-ins is designed to give applicators a great start, and then keep them focused on safety and advancements throughout their career,” said Gary Fellows, Ph.D., BASF Technical Service Fungicide Manager, and active member of the NAAREF (National Agricultural Aviation Research & Education Foundation) PAASS (Professional Aerial Applicators’ Support System) Program development committee. “BASF understands that an investment in great professionals is as important as investment in great products. That’s why it’s important for us to have meaningful partnerships with industry leaders.” Along with offering reliable, effective products, these programs are part of ongoing stewardship efforts for aerial applicators and the safe and proper application of products. PROAIR RRG expects to pay 20% dividend to its insureds LAS VEGAS, NV – PROAIR Risk Retention Group announced that its members should expect to receive cash back of about 20 percent of their base liability premium at the end of 2011. “Our members have controlled and reduced their losses this year and so, barring any major change before year-end, PROAIR RRG members will each receive a distribution on a per aircraft basis of about $700.00. This proves the concept of paying real dollars back to members for being safe,” comments Trevor Edwards, PARMA organizer, Attorney-in-Fact for PROAIR and Director of PROAIR RRG. “This financial reward is due to the excellent safety and claims record that our PROAIR RRG insureds achieved during the past year,” says Edwards. “While other aerial applicators saw steady or increasing risk management costs, PARMA members who joined PROAIR RRG will see a check in their hands at the end of 2011.” Membership in the Professional
Aviation Risk Management Association (PARMA) is steadily growing as Air Tractor operators join PARMA to help develop safer operations and reduce their operating costs. Trevor Edwards, reports, “It’s been a good year for PROAIR RRG. Aerial spraying operators are seeing how the program makes sense for them. Now that we’ve been operating for four years, I’m hopeful that we’ll see more aerial applicators discard their ‘wait and see’ attitude and join PARMA.” Nevada-based PARMA was created in 2007 to provide risk management programs and services for the ag aviation business and to assist operators in implementing “best practices.” A key benefit of PARMA membership is the PROAIR insurance program, which consists of Professional Aviation Insurance Reciprocal and PROAIR Risk Retention Group, Inc. These two captive insurance businesses provide hull and liability coverage to PARMA members.
The insurance is funded and controlled by PARMA members, who are also the principal insureds. The owners/insureds participate in setting underwriting guidelines, claims and investment decisions. PARMA also provides other member benefits, such as the Fly Right Safety Data program, a mapping service that identifies aerial obstacles, and the SPOT communication device that pilots can carry while they work.
Aerial spraying operators are seeing how the program makes sense for them. Tim Whitfield of Whitfield Aviation in Fairfield, North Carolina joined PARMA in its first year. He says it was something that made sense. “We’ve had a pretty clean claim record over the years,
and when I heard about PARMA and PROAIR, it appealed to me. Even though at the start PARMA didn’t offer much of an advantage over what my insurance agent offered, I could see that - in the long run, self insurance made a lot of economic sense,” says Whitfield. “Twenty years from now, I could have a heck of a retirement fund built in PROAIR. Or, I could pass those assets on to my son to provide him some added financial security as he takes over the business.” Aerial spraying service operators are encouraged to visit the PARMA exhibit, (booths 804-806) fill out a membership application, and receive a quote during the National Agricultural Aviation Convention at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Surety puts precision and efficiency on the map Surety Customized Online Mapping continues to make a name for itself, as it helps more and more aerial applicators increase accuracy and productivity. This innovative online mapping system provides a method of easily defining and utilizing custom maps and reports to locate fields for chemical or fertilizer application. With the Surety system, the benefits are clear. Aerial applicators can create precise, custom maps using Surety’s combination of FSA field borders, aerial photography, acreage and more, to easily identify the right field and ensure the right application every time. This not only reduces mistakes and improves communication, but it also saves fuel. In addition, Surety data can be downloaded and displayed on GPS units or software. Aerial applicators can
quickly locate target fields by simply selecting or custom-creating field borders, and then exporting them as shape files onto a PCMCIA card for display on a GPS unit. Aerial maps and application reports can be printed, as well. Plus, Surety is 100% online, meaning users can keep everything they need in one place and access it from home or the office. Surety is a powerful tool for aerial applicators, but its value doesn’t stop there. Many other agribusinesses, such as farmers, insurance agents, crop consultants, rural appraisers, land managers and others, are taking advantage of its endless possibilities for mapping, reporting and trading information. Whether it’s mapping crop insurance data or personalizing reports with soil survey information, everyone is benefitting from Surety technology.
product will offer users all of the timeand money-saving components of the classic Surety system, but will include new features like saving field data and maps, advanced tools and additional maps. Pratt & Whitney Canada
Celebrating 50 years
Mike Perodeau, VP, Marketing (corporate aviation and military programs), Pratt & Whitney Canada. by Mike Perodeau In 2013, we’ll be celebrating a birthday at Pratt & Whitney Canada. Our PT6A engine will mark 50 years in service. It’s an engine that’s obviously well known
54 E
agairupdate.com
in NAAA circles and it has long been a favourite of the Ag industry. Bragging about one’s age does have one drawback: people might start saying that you’re old. Since the PT6A and I are in roughly the same age category, it’s something to which I can relate, but truth be told the PT6 is getting better with time, while only my wife might say the same about me. While I am far less excited about my own age, I kind of like being the guy with an engine that has accumulated 350 million hours, that many have tried – unsuccessfully – to replicate, and that’s been the “go to” powerplant for more than 130 different applications. When it comes to our iconic engine, what has been constant over the years is the name, the well deserved reputation for dependability, and the learning that comes from five decades of experience. The technologies incorporated have of course continued to advance with each new model of the engine – there have
PT6 assembly
been 65 of them – we bring to market. So we think of it as an always-new engine that just happens to have an established track record, making it the turboprop of choice for 6,500 operators in 170 countries around the world. The stats behind the PT6 story are the envy of the industry and our competitors would love to be able to match them – but have a mountain to climb. What we have noticed about many PT6 operators – and this is especially true in the ag sector – is that they tend to be independent thinkers who understand that value comes from the entire package that Pratt & Whitney Canada offers with every PT6; not only one of the finest engines ever made, but also readily available service and support almost anywhere in the world, backed by people who are passionate about keeping it the best in the business. The “culture” of the PT6, which our operators created and continue to foster, is one of the reasons we created a microsite devoted to the engine and
523 Booth
its “fans”. PT6nation.com has become an online meeting place where operators and enthusiasts can share their stories and experiences. It gives the PT6 community a collective voice and it’s one that we are keen on hearing. The stories and sentiments we are gathering have been highly instructive, leading us to rethink the way in which we communicate the fundamental values of the PT6. By listening to our customers, we are best able to articulate the enduring strengths of the PT6 and what it means to them. The PT6 engine is about choice – it has the versatility to power so many applications over the years because it come in a range of small, medium and large models, which in turn means it can serve diverse missions and performance requirements. It’s about confidence when it comes to relying on an engine that has such a remarkable critical mass of flying experience – 10 times more flight hours than its closest competitor. And the PT6 is about commitment, starting reliably each and every time, backed by the industry’s largest service and support network, with low, predictable operating costs and designed to keep you flying longer. What we are discovering through the PT6 site, and through our forays into social media such as Facebook and Twitter, is that much like the engine itself, the PT6 story never gets old. It’s a constantly changing narrative that remains fresh. Every year at Pratt & Whitney Canada we invest some $400 million in research and development, initiatives that are improving our current engines and creating the powerplants of tomorrow. The PT6 engine will continue to benefit directly from these investments, ensuring that the legend remains the leader. Like I said at the beginning, it’s good to own the engine that helped build the industry. It’s kind of nice to hold the standard that all others strive to reach, and to have literally thousands of satisfied customers. When you have that sort of following, birthdays aren’t that bad at all.
LEGENDARY. PROVEN. PRECISE. IS PROUDLY PT6.
Like the thousands of other PT6-powered aircraft operators, Top Hat Ag owner Stan Jones is proudly PT6. With 23,000 engines in flight, pilots trust the PT6 more than any other engine of its class. Yet this remarkable engine hasn’t just made history. With continual technology improvements and rock-solid performance, it defines the future. Are you proudly PT6? Join the nation. At PT6Nation.com.

AgSync–Lite: Users can create a map and work order in seconds. The program is ideal for pilots, who spray the same fields regularly, need to quickly print work orders, provide maps for outside pilots, and prefer to communicate with growers over the phone, fax or email. The four main features that make this an ideal mapping solution: ease of locating fields, the field database, and variety of maps available in the system and the ease of uploading .job, .no1, or shapefiles to a GPS unit. Cost for AgSync-Lite is $995 annually. AgSync-Manager: Offers the same features as AgSync-Lite plus the ability to track order progress, utilize the CDMS crop protection product database, sort pesticide combinations, visually plan missions, track pesticides applied, and quickly build verification maps. This program is designed for aerial applicators to streamline application efficiency, organize record keeping, and build reports including pilot activity, pesticide volume, and invoicing. The added benefit is the ability to manage risk, liability, and regulatory compliance. Cost for AgSyncManager is $5000 annually. TaskForce-Central: Operates with the
same functionality as AgSync-Manager plus it communicates with TaskForceR,C,G (Retailers, Consultants, Growers), programs in real-time. TaskForceCentral is ideal for aerial applicators with customers that need the flexibility to create, edit, submit and track orders at their convenience via email, or online using the TaskForce-R,C,G program. TaskForce-R,C,G: Equips Retailers, Consultants and Growers with the tools to effectively communicate in a single system with ground and aerial applicators. TaskForce-R,C,G enables you to create, organize, and edit orders. Send orders to applicator with a click of a button, gain instant access to field completion records, as applied verification maps, and application reports for quick invoicing. Cost for AgSync-R,C,G, Retailers ($3000 annually), Consultants ($3000 annually), and Growers ($500 annually). AgSync offers online tutorials, online training, and onsite training for you and your customers, if necessary. Tech
support is available year round with 24/7 support during peak season. Securely managing data is a toppriority and the platform that AgSync was built upon. New software and distribution base for TracMap GPS guidance business TracMap has consolidated its rapid growth in the North American market, recently opening a distribution base near Atlanta, GA. “Having a centrally located base is a logical next step for us” said company president Colin Brown. “As our headquarters are in
New Zealand, we always knew it was important to be able to support our US based distributors with a good in-country presence. Opening this warehouse is another step down that pathway.” The company’s remarkable growth has also extended to the software in
its systems. “While we have always had pilots comment on how easy our system is to use, we knew we could do better” said Mr Brown. The new software will be on display by TracMap at a number of the state conventions over the coming months. “That way, pilots will be able to see for
themselves the reason why pilots say this new system really is superior to anything else available,” said Colin. In addition to attending the larger state conventions, TracMap will be at both the NAAA and HAI shows.

Building the best radial engine possible Update on our cylinder reconditioning program for R-985 and R-1340 Engines. by Rex Vaughan Tulsa Aircraft Engines Inc. Years ago, our customers were having multiple cylinder failures on different model aircraft and engines. Tulsa Aircraft Engines recognized it was not always the pilots causing these failures, so we decided to investigate the problem further and found a resolution that would help the industry. Tulsa put together a program to recondition the heads and make new barrels for both the the R-985 and the R-1340 engine. Our intention was to try to prevent head to barrel separation on the R-985 engines (where we made about
a 98% improvement) and cylinder skirt failures on the R-1340 engines (where we made a 100% improvement). With over 200 R-985 engines having undergone our process, there have only been 15 cylinders fail. The R-1340 engine has had a 100% improvement on the cylinder skirt failures (no failures). There are no new cylinders in production at this time, prompting Tulsa Aircraft Engines to improve on all of their overhauls - putting out the best engine possible. Tulsa Aircraft Engines now has another approval for coatings on the pistons to help prevent scuffing on the sides and for a heat barrier. This enhances performance in the engine and will aid in prevention of piston failures.

with our aerospace, purpose built V-8 engine. The TRACE Advantage is all the performance with less hourly operating costs in fuel consumption and overhaul costs. Our 600 horsepower engines can be installed in Air Tractor 301, 302, 401, and 402 aircraft today. TRACE recommends a fresh annual inspection prior to conversion to limit work performed to kit installation. Maintenance costs are a fraction of turbine costs. The TRACE engine is simple to maintain. TRACE overhaul costs are typically less than most 1340 radials, fixed at $40,000 maximum. Engines and firewall forward kits are available for conversions for the coming season. Buy now and save thousands. Get the turbine performance you want for increased productivity without the high fuel and overhaul costs. This makes sense
in the short and long term. Many new current developments are underway including electronic fuel injection and ignition and an STC for operation on 91 unleaded “mogas.” TRACE is currently converting an Air Tractor 301 and is interested in Thrush aircraft as well for next year. Call and talk to us about the applicability for your ag aircraft. Fly in, have your Air Tractor converted and be ready for the upcoming season. TRACE understands the typically short duration of the spray season and the need to be flying when the work is there. Look for us at the annual NAAA Convention in Las Vegas, Nev., booths 1003 and 1005. Demonstration flights will be available at Henderson Executive Airport (HND) during the convention. Covington Aircraft Engines

The Covington Light Overhaul: about half the price of a regular overhaul It’s time to work, your schedule’s tight, and the last thing you want is downtime. As an ag pilot, you know timing is critical during the growing season, and your plane needs to be completely reliable. So you do a thorough pre-flight, but one problem sits at the back of your mind: your engine is way past TBO. At Covington, we know overhauls are necessary, but they can also be expensive. While we always recommend getting your engine overhauled at the suggested TBO, we also know that’s not always an option. So we’ve developed an alternative:‑ The COVINGTON LIGHT OVERHAUL. The Covington Light Overhaul is a repair alternative to a
74 E
agairupdate.com
typical overhaul that focuses on the most crucial parts of a PT6A engine and can add up to 2500 more hours beyond TBO. Keeping with Covington’s tradition of providing the best maintenance at the best price, the Covington Light Overhaul costs about half as much as a regular overhaul. The Covington Light Overhaul not only extends your engine hours, it also increases the overall value of your engine. With Covington’s Light Overhaul, you get documented and certified engine maintenance records for your logbooks. Covington Aircraft’s Turbine Division defines and documents all services and repairs administered
during the Light Overhaul, which increases the resale value of your engine. One of the first differences you may notice between the Covington Light Overhaul and the traditional overhaul is the price. The Covington Light Overhaul is about half the cost of a full overhaul. We are able to offer our services at this price because the Covington Light Overhaul has a clearly defined work scope that focuses on the most crucial areas of the engine first. Rest assured that Covington will never perform services that significantly alter the initial estimate without your approval. It is our priority to keep you informed of our services and the final
price. You will be provided a complete inspection report prior to any further work, and you will have a chance to review or question the reason for replacement of any parts prior to the work being performed. Covington Aircraft is committed to integrity, dependability, affordability and quality service. Contact us today and we can discuss if the Covington Light Overhaul is right for you: 918-756-8320 or visit us on the web covingtonaircraft. com
