Bill Lavender bill@agairupdate.com Regina Farmer of DataSmart Software (Chem-Man Online) and I enjoying a moment while attending the TxAAA convention in Corpus Christie.
One day while driving to the office, I saw the 510P Thrush I used to fly turning over the treetops. I looked at the yellow aircraft and wondered aloud how many times have I made the same turn back to the field; time after time after time. That got me to thinking and doing a little math while I was driving. Just how many times in his career does an ag-pilot perform the procedure turn, or any turn for that matter, back into the field? If one uses a rule of thumb that one-third of ag flight time is ferrying to and from the field, one-third is flying across the field spraying and one-third of the time is in the turns, a calculation could be made. Of course, the one-third assumption won’t apply in many cases, depending on the proximity of the field to the airstrip and the length of spray runs. But, it is a starting point and I’m willing to speculate the onethird assumption is relatively close to fact. If the ag-pilot has 10,000 hours of ag time logged, using the one-third assumption, then approximately 3,333 hours of that time was in a turn. Should one pick 30 seconds for the average time to make a procedure turn, the math starts to come

together. Sure, there are 20-second turns and there are 45-second turns, but you have to decide on a common denominator and 30 seconds is as good as any.
hours? If yours has lasted over 1,000 flight hours, it must have a life expectancy of at least 40,000 presses; a lot of clicks for a well made button.
Using 3,333 hours of being in the turn multiplied by 60 minutes, the calculation works out to 199,980 minutes that allows for 399,960 of those 30-second average time turns in a 10,000-hour ag flying career. Any way you look at it, 400,000 turns back to the field is several lifetimes of flying turns for most other pilots. When you consider today’s median ag-flight time is probably closer to 20,000 or more hours, there is a significant number of ag-pilots with over a million turns in a flying career.
When AgAir Update adopted the slogan, “Keep Turning…”, it becomes evident this is one thing that every ag-pilot has a strong affiliation with, flying the aircraft back into the field so the “money handle” can be used. Now, that’s another topic for discussion, since actually moving a spray handle is becoming an antiquity in itself.
I realize some will pick apart this analogy and mathematical exercise. There is no way to know accurately how many turns per 10,000 flight hours are made, and really, who cares? Well, maybe it does matter as this exercise brings to light the importance of one of the critical components to ag flying, getting the aircraft back into the field. I could get a little nutty with all this; does this mean the advance button for the GPS has been pressed 400,000 times per 10,000

Third season with the Air Repair Rx Gate System on his 550 Thrush. Aircraft is using the standard 5” Transland gate and 22007 8-vane spreader easily achieving rates of 275 per acre or more. Operator, Jerry Jones, says, “I convinced my customer base to pool their spring potash prescription applications together for greater efficiency. A map was generated that covered 14,034 acres with 903 tons of potash at 8 different rates from 0-200 lbs per acre. Pilot David Miller has used this system since 2009 while flying a 602 Air Tractor for Betterfly in Indianola. David reports, ‘I flew the job over 63.58 hobb hours and 14 days which included some weather delays. Runs were 11 miles long with some runs requiring three 4000 lb loads. The material ran out on the next to last pass being off by only 1 ton on 903 tons. We use the system at the prescription level a lot but it works great in constant rate on every job. Passes are uniform upwind and downwind even on a 20 mph day giving the grower a better quality job. On top of that, your arm isn’t worn out at the end of the day.’ ”

I got to fly their simulator of a Thrush back then and boy was it fun. Well, until the boys outside monitoring the pressure to the controls started their fun. I made a pass down the runway, made a big hammerhead turn and started slipping to the runway when suddenly my controls froze up, I went inverted and all I could see was the center line of the runway coming up fast. By then I had grasped that stick with both hands trying to roll up right. As I hit the runway, it seemed just like a crash. Sweating and cussing, I heard the laughter and out those guys came. “We gave you a real thrill didn’t we,” they asked? Boy what language! Anyway, we all laughed about it, then went back to the project of helping design a new dry spreader for their Thrush. Bob Wheat Kirbyville, TX
Anyway, be sure to read the upcoming February edition of AAU, as the cover story is about the new Thrush sim. Great machine. —Bill

Thrush Aircraft debuts advanced ag aviation training device by Bill Lavender At Thrush Aircraft Company, they believe a well-trained pilot is a better, safer pilot – and have invested heavily in bringing a higher level of training to pilots who fly agricultural aircraft. There’s simply no better environment to practice in-flight emergencies than in a flight training device – not to mention being able to brush up on normal procedures and optimal techniques, as well. The new Thrush 510AS, developed in cooperation with Redbird Flight Simulations of Austin, Texas, is the most advanced agricultural aviation flight training device in the world. Redbird Flight Simulations, Inc. of Austin, Texas was founded in 2006 and has delivered over 1,800 aviation training devices into more than 30 countries. They are the recognized leader in the development of advanced aviation training devices for general aviation aircraft. With the tutelage and recommendations of Redbird, Thrush Aircraft selected the MX2 model single seat training device as the platform for the 510AS. The MX2 delivers a realistic, high quality display. Thanks to its expansive visual monitors and 3-axis, full motion platform, it provides accurate sensations of flight.
The 510AS has fully functional flight controls and spray application controls. The plug and play throttle quadrants and start panels for both the S2R-T34 Thrush and S2R-H80 Thrush and corresponding display and software adjustments will allow simulations of flight based upon the performance of each aircraft. The 510AS features a fully functional MVP 50T engine monitor integrated into the instrumentation screen and a fully functional SATLOC G4 GPS display screen with light bar and flow controls attached to the panel. Spray handle and dump lever controls are integrated into the SATLOC operation for simulation of spraying and emergency dumping procedures. The device flight time and curriculum will be used for both initial aircraft transition training and for pilot recurrency training. The following can be trained in this device: • All normal procedures as outlined in the Aircraft Flight Manual. • All emergency procedures as outlined in the Aircraft Flight Manual. • Emergency dumping procedures with corresponding simulation of changes in aircraft flight characteristics. • All spraying operations procedures with corresponding simulation of changes in aircraft flight characteristics as the hopper load is reduced.

Thrush Aircraft demonstrated the 510AS at the NAAA 2016 convention in Long Beach, California. Attendees experienced firsthand the performance levels and capabilities of the 510AS. Thrush Aircraft and Redbird created a spray mission that consisted of taking off and spraying 300 gallons on an alfalfa field, along with a few emergencies, such as engine failures, thrown in for the full experience. It is not practical to believe that the type simulators available to general aviation, especially ag-aviation, would reach the realism of a military or airline simulator built without a budget (tongue in cheek). But, for our purposes the 510AS simulator (flight training device) does a really good job. There should be no issues with managing the engine after training in the 510AS. There should be a very real expectation of what can be accomplished with the aircraft after the completion of the curriculum’s training sessions. There is a lot going on in the cockpit of an ag-plane. For those with thousands of hours of experience, it is all in a day’s work. For the low time pilot, especially one coming from a piston powered aircraft, all the duties needed to be performed can be overwhelming. If a pilot can manage the power, GPS, flow control, navigation and other duties in a second nature manner, then the safety of the flight is greatly enhanced. The 510AS is very capable of instilling this confidence and skill level.
Training programs will soon be available at Thrush Aircraft’s factory training center in Albany, Georgia. Course curriculums will include both classroom and simulator time. Courses will be taught by Thrush on-site staff and overseen by Thrush Aircraft’s chief pilot. In addition to emergency procedures, normal operations such as navigation programming, spray patterns and overall flight management will be taught, as well. Two training courses will initially be available:
510P & 510G initial transition & currency A seat in this course will be offered at no cost to customers who purchase a new Thrush Aircraft. For a very limited time, the course will be available, at no cost, to customers who purchased a new Thrush between 2003 and 2016.
510P & 510G orientation and familiarization This course will be designed for pilots who presently fly aircraft other than the Thrush. It will provide a solid orientation of the Thrush aircraft and associated procedures, as well as familiarization with flight characteristics experienced under daily working conditions. Seats in this course will be available for purchase. Forthcoming will be recurrency training classes to complement initial course offerings. Thrush Aircraft is proud to participate in training the next generation of ag pilots and help bring them home safely every night. For more information on the training programs please contact Terry Humphrey at 229-789-0442 or thumphrey@thrushaircraft.com

From North to south At the time of this writing, I am on a rural road near the town of Nipawin, Saskatchewan, Canada. Today, I will be immersed into the average working day of an agricultural pilot in one of the many Canadian farms. What brought me here was my desire to learn more about agricultural aviation beyond Brazil’s borders. So, like Brazil, Canada is a country where the agribusiness has established itself as an important pillar of the
economy, creating jobs and food for its citizens. Due to the weather, with well defined seasons, the Canadian crop is short compared to Brazil. For example, we

One Canadian pilot that I talked with showed me some details of the their operation. The crop that stands out (by the amount of planted acres and the color of a very bright yellow) is canola. But Canadian farms are also home to vast fields of wheat, oats, barley, potatoes and peas.

In fact, the concern here with the environmental factor is also great. Pilots and operators are on constant alert for the potential of drift. As in Brazil, the effort to raise awareness of the importance of agricultural aviation in Canada is constant. In my view, this is a matter of worldwide importance to make the people understand
Today I can say without a doubt that when the crops need help, we all speak the same language and we are moved by the same purpose: to help feed the world! “Courage, daring and tenacity.”

The first step of the application process is made with fungicides. Then, if there are insect infestations, insecticides are applied and finally a defoliant. In the last two years here, the insects pressure was light. But, the rain came and was so abundant, most desiccant application was applied by air, since the very wet soil prevents the entry of ground machines.

Whiling away Winter has moved in. The old boy has pretty much taken over, scattered himself all over the place, stretched out and put his feet up. The midwest is trudging along under blizzard conditions and the west is slopping through mud. I’ll take all the mud they have to offer. Out here, it is a sin to complain about rain. Our outlying runways are a mess though and that means ferrying longer distances than we’re used to. I’m not complaining. No sir. I imagine if guys back east saw what we consider ‘a long ferry’ they would laugh; or cuss... We’re all looking forward to a great season coming up. I recall the best years farmers and ag pilots have tend to follow a hard winter. I’m not sure that’s really a fact if you were to check the

Never. While I while away the downtime, I get lonesome for the sound of a PT-6 firing up. Engine sounds are music to a pilot’s ears. It’s a tune we all feel in our hearts. Of course, I will always love the sound of an old round engine. It’s a symphony of industrial strength. that? Oh, but the pretty little turbine, bolted to thecreativepro.com nose of the airplane I fly sings a song I just can’t resist. A soothing soprano, crooning out power and eagerness to fly. There’s no way I would ever attempt to make a critical comparison between the two. I know others have tried in various forms. Some in humorous ways, others in bitterness. It’s an exercise in futility. I love them all, round, flat, skinny, fat, or pointy. If it turns a propeller, it’s gotta be good. I don’t know of an ag-pilot who would refuse to fly an airplane because of the type of engine bolted to it. As long as it is in good, operable condition that is. During the off-season, or the slow season, depending on where you’re at, the boys down in the southwestern U.S. are on the other side of the clock. While most of us are kicking back and taking a little time off they are in the heat of battle. Flying every night and working hard to keep those acres of farm produce nice and green. Hats off to those guys. They are doing some of the most challenging flying of the industry. I’d like to recommend we keep them in our thoughts. The season isn’t over for everyone. As long as everything else is copacetic. That can be a blessing or a curse, however. Overconfidence and complacency grows well in an environment where things are easy. The old bird might levitate off the runway, but you’ve still got to fly it and turn it. Keep those things in mind while you’re doing you’re work. The air won’t stay cold for long. It doesn’t take but a few degrees increase in temperature to make a difference on how the airplane will fly. I’m not trying to tell you anything you don’t already
know. It’s a just a reminder to not let your guard down. Toss a pinch of caution into everything you do. Even if it seems like it’s not necessary. You never know when you might need the extra power you saved back, or when those few extra minutes might pay off. Keep it as safe as possible while still getting the job done in an efficient manner. That’s the goal and sometimes it can be a delicate balance. The year ahead looks promising. We are all getting a little itchy to get back in the seat and get going again. If you have time off make sure you’re making the best of it. Spend the time with family and do the things you enjoy doing. Study up on new technologies, chemicals and techniques. Pattern test your aircraft. Take some time to sharpen those perishable skills that exist in your brain housing group. Maybe do some reading on all those who came before us. Those who made our industry and the wonderful world of aviation what it is today. Let’s make sure we do their memory and legacy proud. Every year, we collectively renew our vows to a profession that requires a lot from us. We who fly ‘crop dusters’ for a living are the fortunate ones who have been blessed with the ability and opportunity to do so. This is a good time to remember these things; while we while away the downtime. Stay safe, fly well and keep up your airspeed!

por Ernesto Franzen A few years ago I went to Washington D.C. to make a pilgrimage every aviation lover should do – to visit both Smithsonian aviation museums, the National Air and Space Museum in the center of Washington and its companion, the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at the nearby Dulles Airport, built because the first one had no more room for more aircraft. They preserve some incredible milestones from aviation history, like Charles Lindbergh’s “Spirit of Saint Louis”, the Bell X-1 that broke the sound barrier, the Apollo 11 command module and... the Wright Brother’s Flyer. Unlike Alberto Santos-Dumont’s 14 bis aircraft, which was dismantled for parts after suffering a crash in a test flight, the Flyer, although damaged by a wind gust, was preserved by the Brothers, who realized its significance. In 1948, it was put on display at the Smithsonian. It has undergone two restorations since, its “landing gear” and its fabric covering are not original (but part of the original fabric is on display alongside it). I couldn’t help but feel a thrill when I saw it. A few days later, I was in Perry, Georgia, visiting my good friend Bill Lavender who was surprised to hear me tell about how I felt. After all, I’m Brazilian, and once in awhile, someone from Brazil
(usually not a pilot) finds AgAir Update on the Internet and sends us an email, usually in somewhat rude terms, saying the Wright Brothers’ claims are not properly documented to be believed and that Santos-Dumont flew first. It is so a very emotional matter – and for no real reason. Why? Because being first or second to fly doesn’t detract from them at all! Bear in mind, in those days there was no Internet, no TV and no commercial radio. Urgent news was sent by a telegraphic cable between Europe and America, but publications took weeks to cross the Atlantic. Unconnected, it was a much bigger world than today. The Wright Brothers and Santos-Dumont designed and built their flying machines without knowing of the others efforts, simply from their own ingenuity. Remember how you felt right before take off on your first solo flight, the lump in your throat, the butterflies in your stomach? And yet, there was no real reason for that. You had been cleared for the solo by an instructor who had carefully evaluated your just acquired flying skills. You had flown a few hours in that very model of a well proven airplane design. You knew exactly what would happen and what to expect – the plane’s reactions, the noise, the vibration, the
shaking. Now picture yourself flying away in an unproven machine, without ever seeing another one fly! Besides being very bright men, the Wright Brothers and Santos-Dumont were equally very brave men. Their deeds were equally great, notwithstanding who was first. Realizing this, Bill and I reached an agreement: we concurred the Wright Brothers flew the first heavier-than-theair machine, as the Flyer did fly by its own means from a wooden track and landed on skids, while Santos-Dumont flew the first airplane under the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) rules that require an airplane to have a landing gear. I wrote an article about SantosDumont that was published in the English version of AAU for American ag-pilots. I felt very relieved when no American reader protested against it – someone even wrote saying it was “interesting”. Bill and I raised a toast to our agreement and to the ingenuity and bravery of these gentlemen who paved the way for all future pilots.

The Wright Brothers history by Ernesto Franzen - Part one Wilbur and Orville Wright were born respectively in 1867 and 1871, the third and fourth of the the five children of Milton and Susan Wright. Milton Wright was a bishop for the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, which still exists. Theirs was a very close-knit family with the brothers living together in the town of Dayton, Ohio, for most of their lives. Milton Wright traveled often in the service of the church. In one of these trips, Milton brought the boys a special gift: a toy helicopter. Essentially two rotors driven by a rubber band, it fascinated Wilbur and Orville, who would build several copies of it, spurring their interest in flying. Wilbur was the more cerebral of the brothers; he was preparing himself to enroll in the prestigious Yale University after high school when he was hit in the face in a hockey accident. He went into a depression while recovering and canceled his education plans to help care for their mother, who was suffering from tuberculosis. In the meantime, Orville dropped out of high school, displaying an early mechanical genius by building, with the help of Wilbur, a printer, which they used to start a printing business. It would be their means of sustenance until the arrival of a technological marvel.
A world on two wheels The arrival of the “safety” bicycle of the late 1880s was a technological revolution,

seen by many as gift to mankind. Actually the modern bicycle called “safety bicycle” because the earlier ones with the tall front wheels were dangerous to ride! For an increasingly urban world, it was a transportation means that could carry a man as fast as a horse-pulled buggy, without the inconveniences of owning a horse. The development and manufacture of the bicycle spawned several technologies that would later be crucial to the development of the automobile – and the airplane: metal welding, ball bearings, chain drives and pneumatic tires. That revolution arrived in Dayton in 1892. Initially, the brothers were just avid
cyclists, but soon they decided to open a bicycle repair shop, which turned into a bicycle shop and eventually the brothers decided to build their own bicycles, starting the Wright Cycle Co. in 1896.
Catching the flying bug That same year, Orville fell ill with typhoid fever. In those days without antibiotics, he was bedridden for six weeks with high fever before overcoming it. Wilbur nursed him and used the time by his bed reading. The hot subject in the middle 1890s was human flight. A daring German, Otto Lillienthal, had made over 2,000 glides in a hang glider he invented and many other pioneers were trying to improve on his work.
As Orville recovered, Wilbur discussed the subject with him and wrote the Smithsonian Institute a letter, asking where to find more information. The Smithsonian answered with some pamphlets and a list of books on the subject, including “Progress in Flying Machines” by Octave Chanute; a French railroad engineer who had moved to the US. Chanute would become a friend and mentor for the Wright Brothers (and other pioneers), filling in for their lack of formal academic education. With his help, Wilbur became a self-taught expert on airfoils. He also realized that lift was nothing without control; all experimenters until then had built hang gliders, where the pilot shifted his weight
around to control the aircraft. Wilbur realized this would not be practical, as it was imprecise and drastically limited the size of the aircraft. So he studied ways to control a flying machine through aerodynamic means.
Early experiments The bicycle business gave them free time to pursue this research, as winter was slow for bicycle sales. Deciding to experiment with more elaborate gliders, Wilbur wrote the U.S. Weather Bureau asking for wind data over the US, then selecting Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, as the ideal place for his experiments. In those days, a four to six-day trip from Dayton, Kitty Hawk was a long
beach with high sand dunes, no trees or obstructions and stiff, constant winds. The brothers found it perfect for their experiments. In the winters of 1900 and 1901, they spent time there trying their prototypes, first kites then manned gliders launched from the top of the dunes, testing their airfoils and control systems. They were disappointed with their performance, finding that the lift coefficient of their airfoils, calculated with data provided by others, was overestimated; this led them to build a small wind tunnel and methodically test hundreds of airfoil configurations for lift and drag during 1901, filling books of data. This resulted in a much better glider that they took to Kitty Hawk in

the winter of 1902. Its performance convinced the brothers they had an airframe that could fly – all it needed was power.
First powered flight – without a catapult In Dayton, horses were still the undisputed mode of transportation and their search for a suitable engine was fruitless. They were saved by their shop foreman Charles Taylor, who built them a 12 HP, 152-pound engine from rough sketches they provided. In December 1903, their Flyer was ready. Like their gliders, it was a canard biplane, made of spruce and cotton cloth, with the elevator in front and twin rudders at the back. It had a 40.3 feet wingspan and weighed 605 pounds without its pilot. The engine drove two counter-rotating props and was mounted beside the pilot, who laid prone on the lower wing (for minimum drag) and controlled the aircraft through a lever at his left, which moved the elevator and a cradle under his hips which moved the rudders and a wing-warping device simultaneously. With the help of the crew of the Kill Devil Hills U.S. Lifesaving Service Station, on December 14, 1903 the brothers put the Flyer on a 60foot wooden rail positioned at a 9-degree slope on the sand. They flipped a coin and Wilbur won to make the
IF YOU WANT TO PREVENT THIS,
After two days repairing the Flyer and moving the rail to a level place, they realized the downhill launch had made the take off more difficult and could compromise their later claims. On the 17th, the brothers started again the engine and this time Orville took the controls. With the lifesavers as witnesses and one of them asked to operate the photographic camera they had brought, at 10:35 a.m. the Flyer took off from the rail and flew for 120 feet, before landing on the sand with no damage. After a small celebration, the men dragged the Flyer back to the rail and at 11:20 a.m., Wilbur flew it for 195 feet. Then Orville flew again for 200 feet and at about noon, Wilbur did the most spectacular flight covering 852 feet in 59 seconds demonstrating it was actually sustained flight. It took longer for the men to carry the Flyer back this time. The brothers, more confident now, were planning a really long flight over the beach when a gust of wind overturned the Flyer, damaging it severely. It would never fly again. …continued next month.

first attempt at motorized flight. They started the engine, but as Wilbur tried to release the clip which held the Flyer to the rail, he found it too stiff from the added downward pressure created by the slope. He wasn’t really prepared when he finally manage to release it; the Flyer ran down the rail, nosed up steeply and climbed some 15 feet, then stalled and fell on the sand some 20 feet from the rail. Although the Flyer had left the ground, Wilbur decided not to claim this as a first flight for he was never in control of the machine.

Recollections of the Cessna C-188
by Mike Feeney The Cessna C-188 series ag-plane evolved, in part, from the Cessna C-185. Its 300 bhp engine, wings, fin and tailplane are similar to the C-185. But, a new fuselage was created. This moved the pilot to the rear of the hopper which could hold about 280 US Gallons. When fitted with spray gear and booms, the C-188 weighed around 2,200 pounds. With a sensible maximum ag weight kept to 4,200 pounds, the pilot would weigh about 200 pounds with some items in his cockpit. When flying the C-188 in New Zealand, I generally tried to limit the fuel load to around 200 pounds, or rather about 30-35 gallons, thus bringing the operating weight to 2,200 + 200 + 200 = 2,600 pounds. Therefore that would allow a payload of 1,600 pounds. This would increase with each load as fuel was used. Without the spray gear fitted, I could carry an additional 100 pounds of fertilizer off an airstrip with a down slope, as most are in New Zealand. However, the agconfiguration of the C-188 greatly reduced its cruise speed when compared to its sister ship the C-185. About 100-110 knots was a good as it would do loaded with spray gear.

Spray low, but not too low by John Garr and Jerry Green, GarrCo Products Applying a low spray volume is more efficient. The less water you spray, the more efficient your applications are from a time and cost perspective. Lower spray volumes are the usual case with aerial pesticide applications and is also common with ground applications. We once heard a leading university researcher say that 7.5 gal/ac is considered irrigation in North Dakota. Outside the U.S., some take this to extreme and spray liquid product formulations straight or with very little water added (less than 1 gal/ac). Not sure if this is a legal label application in those countries, but spraying straight product is generally not allowed by the label in the U.S. For instance, the lowest legal label volume for glyphosate is 3
A-30
agairupdate.com
gal/ac in the U.S. Applicators that apply straight product often “feel” they need to apply smaller droplets for “coverage”. Some call this “fogging it on” and that “fog” will drift, particularly at 150 mph when small droplets can even rise in the air turbulence.
Just as importantly, small spray droplets do not penetrate the crop canopy as well as larger droplets and may leave the pesticide only on the top portion of the canopy. Nobody wants to waste a spray application because it was ineffective, hence “contact” pesticide labels often
The need to maintain coverage intuitively makes sense for contact pesticides because they do not move; they must either be deposited where the pests are or cover most of the weeds. On spray cards, the smaller the spray droplets at fixed spray volume, the more it looks like total coverage. For each factor of two that droplet diameter is reduced, the droplet volume is reduced 8-fold. Thus to maintain the same droplet number at 2 gal/ac as 16 gal/ac, the droplets need to be half the diameter. Applying a straight formulation at 1 qt/ac, droplets must be 4-fold smaller than 2 gal/ac. It feels right
to maintain droplet coverage, but do we need all those small droplets? Spray droplet number is usually not the limiting factor, especially since the majority of pesticides today are systemic and move around inside the plant. For example, a 2 gal/ac spray of 200 micron spray droplets deliver approximately 300 droplets per square inch. However if you want to use less water and larger droplets to reduce drift, the number of spray droplets drops with 1 gal/ac and 400 micron droplets will be approximately 20 droplets per square inch. That is still usually enough coverage even with a large average droplet size. Larger droplets are often more efficacious with systemic pesticides because coverage is not as important and larger and more concentrated spray deposits stay moist longer and increase pesticide uptake. In fact, many of the most effective surfactants, particularly with glyphosate, do not increase droplet spread at all and actually concentrate the spray deposit on the leaf surface.
The Aviation Innovation Specialists
Chances are that everything you apply when the crop is up needs to be retained on the crop or weed to be effective. One issue is that big droplets can bounce off waxy leaves. To be sure those and all other droplets for that matter are retained, we always recommend adding a polymer deposition adjuvant that will increase droplet retention. The more droplets retained on the target leaves, the more effective your application will be. So the bottom line is that you need to fine tune to your applications for each pesticide type to get the optimum coverage and canopy penetration. In practice, pesticide companies have already determined how to make their pesticides work and provide their best recommendation on the label. recommend higher spray volumes to get better coverage and canopy penetration. In contrast, uptake is more important than coverage for systemic pesticides. Systemic pesticide labels often allow wider spray volume range and larger droplets. The larger droplet spray deposits stay moist longer, which allows for more pesticide uptake into the plant. Small spray droplet deposits dry more rapidly and once a spray deposit is dry, uptake slows or even stops.

AT-602: Trim your overhead. You’ll reduce costs and increase profit margins when you scale a multi-plane operation down to a single-plane operation. Air Tractor’s AT-602 makes it an easy choice. The big 630-gallon payload moves you up to high volume production, reduces loads, saves time and helps trim operating expenses compared with two smaller planes. The AT-602 is the ideal solution for 5-gallon work on center-pivot circles. Step it up with an AT-602. Visit your Air Tractor dealer.
