It’s a cool morning As I write this editorial, the sun is peeping over the horizon this cool morning overlooking a calm lake. I have about 15 more minutes before its bright rays fill the sky. Although it has been 16 years since I raced the sun to the airport to prepare for the first load of the day, I have not forgotten those 27 years that I did that, filling the plane with fuel, calculating the upcoming loads, thinking about the possibility of fog. As a rule, I worked the fields closest first and the longer ferries later in the day when it was hot and bumpy. That way, I did not waste the best flying hours of the day ferrying to the field. It was not unusual for early morning acres-perhour sprayed to nearly double those covered midday. Another reason for working fields closest to the airport first was the unpredictability of fog. I have seen times the sky was clear the first 30 minutes of daylight, then quickly turn into a dense fog. I have had the fog chase me out of a field causing me to point the aircraft back to base at near full throttle all the time thinking of an alternate place to land if the fog closed in around me. I am not telling you about anything you have not experienced if you have

several years of ag-flying. Perhaps there are those who live in arid areas where fog is not a challenge. Regardless, we all know the beauty of the sunrise and the exceptional performance of the aircraft in the early morning hours. Many of you are just starting your spray season. You are changing from a winter of relaxation (hopefully) and pondering about ways to make this season safer and more profitable. If you only repeat yourself from previous years, you have not improved. Therefore, you should not expect anything to be better. I ask each of you to take a deep breath as you face another season. Think about your family, business and yourself in a way that will only bring better results from your efforts. The one element that is prevalent in those thoughts should be safety. It is your best tool to improve profits and your family life. If you have an accident of any kind, at the very least, it will cost hard earned profits. Or, it may cost your life. Think about it. A sole duck is crossing the lake. Not unlike your ferrying to the field, alone in the cockpit, thinking about the best way to approach the upcoming field. I know the duck is not going to spray anything, but it is making an approach to
something. Or, the duck could be simply wandering around the lake. Are you wandering when flying? I doubt it. I think the sun is going to be a little tardy this morning. I ponder how the plane will have time to carry one more full load and what’s left of the full fuel tanks from the first load of the day in calm, relatively cool air before the sun’s heat turns it into chop. It will be nearly sunset before comfortable flying returns this hot summer day. Then, it starts all over tomorrow. Until next month, Keep Turning…

In 1980 me and my brother (Fred Locker-Ag Aviation) and another cropduster friend (Brian Sanderson-Farm Chemicals) went in together and bought N1037Z a Mark Five to complement our Skydiving operation. We had a Cessna 206 for our main jump bird. We wanted to build some larger formations so we got the Norseman Mark V serial # N-29-5. We hauled 10 jumpers with the Mark V and 6 in the 206. Somewhere between 02-1980 and 04-1980 we built a 16 way Snowflake over Muleshoe Texas on the forth try. Thanks for a great Newspaper. Don Locker Muleshoe, TX

Hail has always been a serious enemy to tea plantations in the highlands of Kenya. In the 1960s, before I started spraying, there was a US company doing hail “suppression”, as they called it. They used a Piper Twin Comanche, as best I can remember, with a burner on each wing tip. It was no doubt mechanically sound and airworthy, but looked like a beat up old wreck because of the hail damage on the leading edges. One of the pilots kindly (probably illegally) took me on a mission. We were guided by a ground radar station to the base of an enormous cumulonimbus cloud formation. Radar told us when we were below the core of the storm. The silver iodide burners were activated and we circled just below the cloud trying not to get sucked in. The pilot told me that on some extreme occasions he had been sucked in and ended up with his nose down, flaps down, undercarriage down, power reduced to zero thrust and still showing an assent of a thousand plus feet a minute. He stated that at this stage he would not fight the controls, but merely did his best to keep the aircraft upright. Eventually, the cloud formation would spit him out at 15,000 to 20,000 feet . I read a very interesting article in December 2015 issue of The Week, page 54 titled “cloud-seeding”, with two pages about weather modification in Montana and North Dakota. Steffany Royal (female pilot from Texas ) is one of the courageous pilots flying these missions. Royal is employed by Weather Modifications, Inc. of which Bruce Boe is Vice-President of Meteorology; worth reading.

Hello Pat; Always good to hear from my Kenya friends. Pretty impressive reading about the thunderstorms. For me, they paint a brick wall on the radar and I simply don’t go there. Chicken. Too bad about the forced retirement. I’m not so lucky. I got about a year and half before 65, but for some reason, nobody says I have to quit writing! Or, flying. Guess I’ll work my way to the grave.

The Thrush is a fantastic aircraft. I owned several over a 20-year period, including the 600 HP radial, 1200 HP radial and PT-6A turbine. Of course, the turbo Thrush was the best of all of them. And now, the

by Graham Lavender Agricultural aviation, unlike some professions, is populated with many family-run operations. Second, third and sometimes fourth-generation ag pilots are quite the norm in this industry. Many times, a flying service is started out of necessity and built with hard work and dedication, attention to detail and a general love for aviation and agriculture. As time marches on, the second generation is raised immersed in aerial application with no question about their future path in life. The partnerships that evolve are always supposed to be there, when the young, albeit adult, ag pilot finally has to pry the stick out of their parent and mentor’s hand. But, unfortunately, we can’t write the script or execute the playbook. As Michael “Zip” Wallin, Jr. learned, in the height of Wallin Agri Aviation’s 2014 season, sometimes there is a different plan. And, as Zip puts it, “You have to just keep on keepin’ on”. Michael Wallin, Sr., affectionately called “Button” by his family, friends, customers
and about anybody else that knew him, opened the doors to Wallin Agri Aviation in 1984 in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. Button was operating 600 Thrushes until the early 1990s when he purchased the operation’s first turbine, an AT-502. The Air Tractor, along with a 400-gallon turbine Thrush, served the flying service’s needs through 2013 when Button purchased an AT-602, replacing the blue stripe with his favorite color, red. This aircraft is still a part of Wallin Agri Aviation’s fleet today. Michael Jr. (Zip) was raised as a part of Wallin Agri Aviation since he could climb on the wing. Zip soloed on his 16th birthday and continued to earn his commercial license locally in Arkansas. Zip graduated from the Flying Tigers Agricultural Aviation program in 2008. He left the Louisiana school with a license to learn and a wife! Michael’s friend-turned-brother-in-law Wes Redden was a classmate of Zip’s

during his time at Flying Tigers. The two became friends with Zip staying with Wes during his training. During this time, Zip was introduced to Wes’s sister, Lindsey. The two will celebrate their 4th wedding anniversary in November. Zip returned to Wallin Agri Aviation and flew his first season in an R-1340 Ag-Cat, experiencing a prop separation and magneto failure; the radial engine ag plane put him in the field both times. In Zip’s second and third seasons, he still flew an Ag-Cat, but this time powered by a TPE331-2 Garrett. 2012 marked Zip’s fourth season as an ag-pilot, working alongside his dad Button to continue to build the business and gain experience. Button sold the Super B that Zip had been flying, along with the 400-gallon turbine Thrush and purchased an AT-602. Zip graduated to the AT-502 his dad had been flying since the mid-1990s. Wallin Agri Aviation’s business is about 90% rice with the remaining divided out amongst corn and soybeans. Its typical season, depending on the spring weather, begins in April and lasts until November. Walnut Ridge is too far north that the possibility of year-round ag-flying is remote. During the colder 2013 off-season, Zip and his dad rebuilt an AT-602 that Zip began flying in 2014.
that week. Zip instantly was propelled from the role of a relatively new ag-pilot to that of being an operator. In typical ag-aviation fashion, competitors, friends, growers and family rallied together to “keep on keepin’ on”. Zip’s brother-in-law, Wes, arrived to help finish the busy portion of the season. Other operators came to help with the workload as a family formulated a plan to continue moving forward, as Button would have wanted. They have a saying that, “It may not have been Button’s way, but it’s a way!” In Zip’s mind, there was no hesitation to continue with Wallin Agri Aviation. Lindsey left her teaching job to join the operation and be beside her husband as they both became accustomed to their new roles. In 2015, Zip sold the AT-602 he was flying and purchased an AT-802. He hired Chris Propst to fly the AT-602 that Button once flew. Chris comes from an extensive background of aerial application and helicopter flying. The AT-802 is equipped with a VeriFly GPS system from FliteTek, hydraulic gate and CP-11s. Zip and Lindsey, together with Chris and ground ops manager David Ryan, who recently graduated from Flying Tigers, will ensure that Wallin Agri Aviation “keeps on keepin’ on.”
Tragically, during the pinnacle of Wallin Agri Aviation’s 2014 season, Button succumbed to cancer. Michael “Button” Wallin went in for a routine check-up and passed away later

The company soon became one of the largest fleets of Ipanema ag aircraft in the world. Teruel Aviação Agrícola founded by Pedro
Teruel and two of his brothers, started with only one Ipanema, serial number 049. They based the aircraft at Dourados in 1980 and after adding many more Ipanemas, the Turuel borthers moved the company to the newly built Teruel Airport in Campo Grande, MS.

Because of the difficulty and delay of importing a cylinder (there were very few R-1340 radial engines in Brazil), the aircraft was grounded for more than 90 days. Spraying contracts were lost causing financial loss. Pedro decided it was not yet time for the Air Tractor and later sold it.

Herbicide and fungicide applications are made using Spraying Systems’ T-Jet nozzles with hollow cone tips. Application rates for herbicides range from 20-50 l/ha (2-5 GPA). Pasture treatments are made at treetop height to avoid trees growing in the pastures. This requires larger droplets and a higher volume application to minimize drift and evaporation. Of the 11 Ipanemas Teruel Aviacao Agricola operates today, three are EMB-202As and two are EMB-202s powered by ethanol and six EMB-201s powered by av-gas. Pedro prefers the ethanol powered Ipanemas because of ethanol’s availability and many of his large customers own ethanol plants. The cost to use ethanol or av-gas is usually about the same, depending on the price of each. Ethanol costs approximately R$2.20 per liter with the Ipanema consuming 95 liters per hour, about R$209 an hour. Av-gas costs about R$3.20 per liter and the Ipanema uses 65 l/hr, about R$208 an hour (May 2015 prices. Today, 3.6 reais per dollar). In the past, Teruel Aviação Agrícola had its own maintenance facility to keep its Ipanemas flying. Recently, the maintenance division of Teruel split off into an independent company, Ipanema Serviços de Manutencao e Reparacao de Aeronaves. The company is based at the Teruel Airport in Campo Grande (MS) specializing in maintenance for agricultural aircraft, as well as general aviation aircraft. Ipanema Serviços has seven employees, plus partners Evandro

Eugenio has completed training courses at Embraer for the Ipanema and GE Aviation for the H80 engine in conjunction with Thrush Aircraft of Brazil in Anápolis (GO). He has completed training for the Air Tractor and the PT6A engine at Air Tractor dealer Frost Aviation’s Brazilian representative DP Aviacion in Cachoeira do Sul. Ipanema Serviços uses Pedro Teruel for technical maintenance and recovery services. Accidents caused by center of gravity errors In 1984 an Ipanema took off from Rondonópolis (Brazil) to a farm where its applications would be closer to the work. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot lost control of the aircraft crashing into a tree and then fell to the ground. The pilot died instantly and the aircraft was unrecoverable.
In the same year in Ponta Pora Brazil, one Ipanema aircraft was applying pesticides equipped with Micronair AU3000 rotary atomizers when there was a failure with one of the units. The pilot attempted to return to the airstrip to try to remedy the problem, but made the fatal mistake of taking the ground loader.
This aircraft was operating outside of certification, carrying a passenger behind the pilot’s seat. Flight with two aboard the single-seat Ipanema restricts the movements of the pilot and flight controls. But most worrisome is the displacement of the Center of Gravity (CG) beyond the rear limit, leading to aircraft instability around the transverse axis.
After takeoff the aircraft entered a steep angle of attack reaching 90° upward. This abnormal attitude was recovered, but quickly repeated culminating into an entry into a spin and ultimate collision with the ground. The aircraft was completely destroyed and the occupants died.

An Ipanema equipped with AU3000 rotary atomizers and empty hopper must be operated carefully because when the fuel level reaches 150 liters the weight in the cabin must not exceed 90 kg (pilot and luggage). There are reports of numerous accidents of this type, always repeating the same factors. This tells us that it is impossible for a pilot to safely close the window of his plane, taking with him a companion, and not create a dangerous situation as it relates to the CG of the aircraft.

The pilot was experienced, had 7,500 hours of flight, but his Aeronautical Medical Certificate and Technical Qualification Certificate were expired, showing that the pilot did not fit even the most basic items of the profession. Also, the company was complicit in its lack of control of the certificates of the pilot. I remember when I was working on the training of Crew Resource Management - CRM, I analyzed a report by the

Perhaps if this aviator had worked for an organized company, that exercised supervision and control, with a good safety record, the accident would not have happened. Because the company allowed routine flights with two on board and with expired certificates it was found that the company did not exercise adequate supervision in operations. This pilot when flying with another person on board, was not wearing a helmet because of the small space or shoulder belts. In this incident, although the aircraft with the weight being within limits, there was a displacement of the center of gravity beyond the rear limit, reaching 30.8% Mean Aerodynamic Chord - CMA, when the rear limit should not exceed 27%. The factors that led to the occurrence of this accident as contained in the final report were: • Poor supervision by the company that allowed flying with expired certificates and two on board; • Inadequate flight planning, by countering operational and safety standards by flying with another onboard and the Center of Gravity out of range; • Poor judgment when making a steep turn at low altitude and, • Flying with expired certifications.

Air Tractor 502XP ag airplane receives FAA certification OLNEY TX — Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch announced that the company’s 502XP agricultural spray plane has received Federal Aviation Administration type certification. The 502XP was first introduced to ag operators and pilots in December 2015 at the National Agricultural Aviation Association Convention in Savannah, Georgia. Type certification is the culmination of a long program where Air Tractor has shown the plane meets the applicable FAA regulations through a 2-year program of rigorous engineering analysis, supported by numerous ground and flight tests with the FAA. “This week we received a letter confirming Air Tractor had met all of the FAA certification requirements for the 502XP,” reports Hirsch. “This marks another milestone in Air Tractor’s many airplane product offerings since our company’s founding in 1972. Now that the certification process is completed, we are ramping up production and preparing to begin deliveries of the 502XP to customers.”

Operation S.A.F.E. Fly-In slated for April at Air Tractor factory Air Tractor and Transland are again hosting the Operation S.A.F.E. Texas Fly-In April 13-14, 2016 at the Air Tractor headquarters located at Olney Municipal Airport (ONY) in Olney Texas. The Texas Fly-In is an opportunity for aerial application operators to have their aircraft professionally analyzed for pattern uniformity and droplet size, with the goal of improving accuracy and mitigating spray drift. Operation S.A.F.E. (Self-regulating Application & Flight Efficiency), developed in 1981, was designed to clearly demonstrate that ag aviation recognizes its responsibility to minimize the potential for adverse health and environmental effects of agricultural chemical application. Operators attending the Fly-In will receive one-on-one consultation and hands-on advice for spray equipment setup, along with recommendations for improving application accuracy and mitigating spray drift.
