Remember where you are The business of aerial application, or even general aviation, can be a dangerous endeavor. There is very little margin for error, which often can be deadly. If we stay in the business long enough, eventually we lose a loved one, friend or associate in a fatal accident. I have lost many over the last 43 years and it is never easy. However, between July 8 and July 16, I lost three friends in two separate accidents. It makes me question…
fatally crashed in Atchison, Kansas. The pilot was Vlando Lenoch with passenger Bethany Root, who was an ag-pilot. Bethany had been flying ag for about four years for Floyd McElwain in St. Joseph, Missouri. In 2014, Graham and I visited McElwain Sprayers to write a feature article on this beautiful, aspiring female ag-pilot (see AAU January 2015). Then, 32 years old, she had all the right qualities to be a successful agpilot; a good, positive attitude.
July 8 - During the afternoon in Cash, Arkansas while flying an AT-602, Tripp Everidge lost his life while making a turn. Tripp was a third generation ag pilot, 27 years old and had been flying ag for nearly a decade. I knew well his grandfather, Ronnie “Daddy Rabbit” Everidge (deceased) and his father, Ron; all ag-pilots here in Georgia. Several years ago, AgAir Update featured the father and son team on the November 2013 cover with them flying their turbo Thrushes in formation.
Floyd McElwain texted me Sunday afternoon to give me the bad news. I was getting dressed to attend Tripp’s funeral. He didn’t say who the pilot was or the type aircraft, only that a “stunt” pilot was giving her a ride when they crashed.
Occasionally, Ron and Tripp would stop by the office to chit-chat, an inseparable pair. As a father that works with his son every day, I cannot begin imagine the void Ron is going through. This is not the first time in this business a father has buried his son, or vice versa, from an ag-flying accident. I can name several. On Sunday morning, July 16, a P-51D Mustang and its pilot and passenger

Later that day when the news of the P-51D crash appeared on the Internet, I learned the pilot was Vlando. The first time I met Vlando, he and Al Schiffer were flying a pair of P-51s to Lakeland, Florida for a P-51 owners gathering. They parked their aircraft at the Perry Airport and stayed overnight with Sandy and me. A couple of months later, Vlando stopped again at the Perry Airport, unexpectedly. He phoned my office from the FBO, asking for me. When I answered the phone, he said, “This is Vlando. Remember me? I stopped for fuel here in Perry and wanted to know if you had time for a P-51 ride?”
Vlando Lenoch gave me my first P-51 ride. It was indescribable. Those who have been fortunate enough to experience such a flight, understand. I’ll alway remember that day, airport bums standing around the Mustang watching Vlando strap me into the rear seat. They all were green with envy, no doubt. I don’t know what happened to Tripp, Bethany and Vlando those two days in July. We may never know for sure. Undoubtedly, there will be much speculation. Whatever the cause, we all lost three very talented pilots. There are still several weeks left in the 2017 North American spraying season and ag-operations south of the Equator are not long before starting. For your family, for yourself (and maybe for me), take a deep breath and remember where you are and what you are doing when flying your aircraft. Keep turning…

agair mail LIMITING BOOM I read the article you posted on Facebook about the law in Mississippi limiting the boom length to 50 percent of the wingspan of a spray plane on certain chemicals. Now, I don’t want to brag, but we started using the 50 percent boom length for critical chemicals and critical areas in 1980, and used that method until we left the spraying business. I have told dozens of operators about this method over the years, but usually I was ignored because they didn’t want to give up anything on their swath width. But what most of them don’t realize is that they don’t have to use that method all the time, just in critical situations.
shut off valve. The 50 percent boom length is one of the most effective drift reducers I have ever seen on a spray plane. It’s not perfect, but it sure beats 75 percent boom length in drift control. I have sprayed paraquat right next to wheat, with the wind blowing toward the wheat, and didn’t didn’t hurt the wheat even 5 feet out into the wheat field. I don’t recommend that, but the farmer wanted his cotton defoliated and said not to worry about the wheat, and that he would replant the wheat if necessary. That was at 8 gallons to the acre total mix. I just wanted you to know that the 50 percent boom length is not something new to some of us old timers. Carlin Lawrence Carnegie, OK
I did play with the swath width and results of using the 50 percent method before we pretty will adopted it in any critical situation. I personally think it’s a better method than having a one side boom

Carlin; Thank you for sending this in. As airplanes and swath widths continually get larger and wider, I wonder if this is an often overlooked tool. The article originated from Ike Brunetti, the current MAAA(Mississippi) president, and the regulaiton was mandated by their county. Will be in Australia in July testing Aussie ag-planes, again, for five weeks throughout the continent. Cheers, Alan Corr Nebraska Good morning Alan; I found the data very interesting. Lots of work! I read where you are going Down Under, again. Enjoy yourself. That trip just kills me. If I could justify flying Business Class, I’d be tempted to make it more often. The last time in September 2016, I didn’t think I was going to recover! I do almost the same travel time from house to destination when going to South America, but longitudinally is much easier on the body that latitudinally.
Flying should be the least of your concerns! You need to rely on other experts for help and advice. And when you rely on a diversified ag services corporation like Mid-Continent, flying is the least of your concerns.

A Thrush is
“REBORN”
AgAir Update completes an evaluation flight of the Ultra Thrush
by Bill Lavender It was in 2010 that Thrush Aircraft introduced a new engine mount design for the 510 series Thrush, specifically the then newly certified H80 GE turboprop engine. The extension was approximately 18 inches forward of the hopper, creating a ministorage area and eliminating the lead-shot ballast ring. Not only did this improve flight characteristics by moving the CG, but removed nearly 300 pounds of “dead” weight. However, the first version of this 510 Thrush with the extended motor mount and the GE engine did not provide the expected performance, most likely because the same Hartzell prop (except for shot peening of the blades) was used that was certified on the 510P Thrush with its PT6A-34AG engine. After a few evaluation flights (see AAU January 2011) and back to the drawing boards at Thrush, a four-blade Hartzell propellor was mounted to the H80 and the world of 510 Thrushes changed. The incorporation of the four-blade prop and extended motor mount turned the 510G Thrush into a different animal, with vastly improved flight characteristics. Of course, with more than 50 SHP at 106°F when compared to the PT6A-34AG, takeoff and load carrying ability improved as well for the H80. Since that time, two aftermarket vendors, Turbines, Inc. and Cascade Aircraft Conversions, as well as aircraft manufacturer Air Tractor, Inc. have introduced their own version of the extended motor mount, 4-blade propeller combination combined with a range of horsepower from 750 SHP up to 867 SHP. Realizing this combination of improvements vastly improved the performance of the 510 Thrush, Doran Rogers of Cascade Aircraft Conversions developed a 14-inch extended engine mount and removed the lead shot ballast ring, but instead of a four-blade propeller, installed an experimental three-blade 108” Avia prop (from Czech Republic). The Ultra Thrush is licenses with a 106” Avia propeller. JAS has applied for a four-blade Hartzell propeller STC. The aircraft I was privileged to fly in Tulare, California earlier this year has the experimental 108” Avia propeller. Johnston Aircraft Service (JAS), owned and operated by Joy and Dave Johnston, has been in the ag-aviation business for over 70 years, formed by Dave’s father, Elmer Johnston. The company has been a leader with innovative improvements to the Pawnee

Dave introduces the reborn Johnston Aircraft Service Ultra Thrush; ready for delivery to an ag-operator. Brave with a leading edge cuff conversion and the 400 HP Super Brave conversion. Also, JAS holds numerous STCs for the Thrush improving its performance and comfort. In 2015, JAS received a 1974 model S2R Thrush into its inventory. From that point on, the aircraft underwent a complete “rebirth” into a 2016 model Thrush with the Cascade extended engine mount and inlet, 108” Avia prop and a robust PT6A-41 engine. Of course, it does not hold a 2016 year model Type Certificate, but every conceivable inspection, update and modification has been made to the aircraft. JAS’s shop disassembled the aircraft and built it up as new. This included extensive ultra sound checking of the fuselage and making improvements to it as needed, including sealing axle ends to prevent corrosion from entering, often a problem for older Thrush aircraft. The improvements made to this aircraft are listed in the sidebar of this article. The most important improvements are the installation of the Cascade extended engine mount and inlet, removal of the lead shot ballast ring and the installation of a PT6A-41 engine with the 108” Avia propeller. The fabric tail already had been replaced with a Thrush factory metal tail. Dave is very pleased with the outcome of this highly modified early model Thrush. He called AgAir Update to invited me to fly the aircraft at my earliest convenience. I accepted. Let’s face it: I have not actively flown ag for hire in 17 years, even though before that I flew ag 27 years and 20 of those

years were in turbine Thrushes. I have the background, just not the currency. Having stated that, my opinion may differ from others, but the facts will remain the same. One notable aspect is a current 510 Thrush pilot will be able to take off and land in much shorter distances than me. Also, when I am in a strange airplane, I never push the envelope. It is way too late in this game for me after 43 years to become an obit in my own publication. Dave and JAS Shop Foreman, Charlie Gazarek, gave me a brief cockpit checkout on the morning of the three evaluation flights. The aircraft is “Thrush straightforward”, simple. No surprises here. I was expected to fly it like any other Thrush. As a rule during an evaluation flight, I like to make the first flight with an empty hopper. The reasons should be evident. This protocol gives me the opportunity to familiarize myself with the aircraft and decide if I can trust it. After all, this aircraft had been taken completely apart from end to end and I needed to know for sure it would fly right, without the distraction of a loaded hopper. Needless to say, it did very well and as expected.
A basic, clean instrument panel. The Dyna-Nav Vektor MAX GPS is mounted top right, while the Electronics Instruments MPV-50 is mounted top left with the EI fuel quantity indicator below it.
After an empty hopper flight of slow airspeed maneuvers and practice spray runs, I returned to fill the hopper to 300 gallons, courtesy of Scotty Goodlin at Goodlin Crop Dusters’ loading facility on the Tulare airport. I started with nearly full fuel (192-gal), so there would be no need to add any more during the evaluation flights. The second flight proved as uneventful as any flight could possibly be; like most ag-planes, it actually flew a little better with 300 gallons on board. In no way was this aircraft in any kind of strain, easily making tight turns and an excellent ferry speed to the field at 160 MPH using 60 PSI and 2000 RPM (698 SHP). At that power setting, there should have been no problems, and there wasn’t . By the time of the third flight, now with a full hopper, the density altitude had reached just above 1,800 feet, which was about 85°F
In flight with 525 gallons on board using 63.8 pounds of torque and 1960 RPM. The engine is running very cool with an ITT of 635°C. Indicated airspeed is 155 MPH. Fuel flow is 70.3 GPH. The GPS is reading approximately the same. At 50 PSI/1990 RPM, IAS was 150 MPH empty.

with a slight headwind. Fuel load was down to approximately 140-150 gallons. The full hopper holds 525 measured gallons and was ran over for the third load. Dave suspects the hopper with an extension at the top rear is a Goering hopper conversion. However, this small hopper enlargement in no way affects the visibility of the pilot. All takeoffs were full power (850 SHP up to 106°F at 73 PSI and 2,000 RPM). This time I noted where the aircraft broke ground and according to a measurement on Google Earth, it was just under 1700 feet. The gross weight of the aircraft was approximately 10,430 pounds (4,785/empty+4,425/ water+1020/fuel+200/pilot = 10,430 pounds). With a little practice, the takeoff roll could be shortened flying under the same circumstances. I ferried the aircraft to the field at a higher power setting than necessary, but as a matter of caution, using 63 PSI and 1,950 RPM. In my mind, the aircraft “liked” 1,950 RPM better than 2,000. The engine at this power setting was producing 715 SHP. You could operate a PT6A-34AG at 715 SHP, but in my opinion you would be dogging it pretty hard and on a hot day, probably maxing out the limits of the engine. The -41 was operating extremely cool, as you can see in the MVP-50 photo. My IAS while ferrying loaded was bumping around 155-160 MPH, which is relatively fast for a Thrush. Fuel burn was 70 GPH.
The Harbour air conditioner condenser side panel louvers are made of aluminum versus other models use steel.
The Thrush handled nicely at 10,430 pounds gross weight at a density altitude of 1,800 feet. It was a bit bumpy, but like all Thrushes, the ride and turns were very stable. And, like every Thrush I have ever flown (and there have been lots of them), I don’t use flaps in the turns. Instead, I fly two-handed with my left hand on the trim tab handle on the sidewall assisting the elevators. The aircraft is relatively light and has plenty of reserve power which are all good factors for ag-spraying. The craftsmanship on the rebuild is evident with a walk-around, very well done. It is loaded with options, including one of the best air-conditioners I’ve used. You may even have to turn it down on a hot day!
Unbeknownst to me at the time I flew the Ultra Thrush in June of this year, I had flown this same aircraft 20 years ago, almost to the same month. The engine has good times, coming off of a King Air. Its total time is about 10,100 hours with 4,100 hours since overhaul. The number of cycles since new are 8,875 and CSO are 2,877. It has 0-time since an extensive HSI with a test cell run. Of course, a few more hours have been added since I was given these statistics. “Bill, we believe these PT6A-41 and -42 engine takeoffs are by far the best way to go for more power in a Thrush. There is a lot of life left in them at a low purchase price. So low, that when the engine is run out, instead of overhauling it, replace it with another one,” explains Dave. On another note, unbeknownst to me at the time I flew the Ultra Thrush in June of this year, I had flown this same aircraft 20

years ago, almost to the same month. As a matter of irony, I was proofreading the June edition of AgAir Update and when I came upon the “20 years ago” article that was about an evaluation flight I made in Lindley Johnson’s Walter Thrush in Minnesota, something told me it was the same aircraft. Maybe it was the unique look of the hopper. I contacted Lindley and sure enough, he confirmed it was the same aircraft. He had bought it in Nova Scotia, converted it to a Walter’s Thrush, flew it a few years, then sold it to another operator in Minnesota who also flew it a few years. Then, he lost track of it after it was traded for a YAK in Colorado. Evidently, the Johnston Aircraft Service’s Ultra Thrush before being reborn made several ag-operators a lot of money over the years. Now, it is fully positioned to start that cycle all over again. Who knows, maybe another 20-30 years; kind of like the Energizer Bunny, just keeps going and going and going… For a demo flight and more detailed information on the Johnston Aircraft Service’s Ultra Thrush, contact Dave Johnston directly at: 559-686-1794 or davej@johnstonaircraft.com.

Beta valve plunger maintenance It has been reported that the Woodward 8210 Series beta valve plunger assembly for a turbine engine propeller governor can accumulate dirt and grit, causing sticking of the plunger. This can cause a condition of remaining in the beta range when increased power is applied. Woodward Governors has approved field cleaning of the beta valve plunger assembly through the issuance of the following text from a Service Letter.
Remove the beta control arm by removing the pin from the beta valve plunger and the AN bolt from the control rod. Remove the safety wire and with a 1-1/8” wrench, break the beta cap loose. Be cautious removing the nut, because the beta plunger is spring loaded. Once the nut is removed, allow the beta plunger assembly to move out to contact the back of the spinner back plate. Leave the nut on the plunger for cleaning. Using a shop grade Stoddard solvent, MEK, or Acetone, clean the plunger. Blow dry after cleaning, apply turbo oil to spacer and -780 O-ring and reinstall the beta cap and torque to 450-500 lb./ in. Safety wire the cap and reinstall the beta control arm. Conduct an operational check of the beta control and note the responsiveness of going in and out of the beta range. The cleaning and inspection of the beta plunger assembly shall be conducted at each annual inspection. If sluggishness of the beta control is noted due to operations in dusty conditions, more frequent inspections and cleaning may be required. All work on the beta valve plunger should be performed by an appropriately qualified person.

hands-on flying
Greeting the dawn Dawn seeped into the valley. The new day arrived from the other side of the Sierras heralded by the silent beauty of sunrise over the mountains; magnificent array of color and promise, a brand new canvas with only the background colored in. All else left to us to fill however we see fit or are able to do. Light pours from the edge of the sun, slips across the land to chase away the shadows of night, slowly building momentum as the icon rises higher; just as it has done for ions. We, in our short existence, taking our turn in history to witness it. Down in the valley, bleary eyed crop dusters finish their last loads of the night. The airplanes are dirty, the pilots are weary, but another night of aerial application has been completed. Thousands of acres and the promise of millions of pounds of cotton passed beneath their wings. The wheels of the last ship to land chirp on the runway just as darkness fades. It’s an odd sort of quiet when the engines are finally shut down and the propeller stands still after its last revolution. Like a long deep breath. Hours of being on the edge of the seat dissipate in the cooling of the exhaust stacks. The yellow birds are again parked wingtip to wingtip on the flight line. Some of us hobble a little as we exit the cockpit.
Worn joints, battle scars and just plain old age are things we can’t escape, but they all are well earned and just seem to come with the territory. We’re all a little tougher than most, or at least we try to be. Ag pilots aren’t like many others. We’re not made of the same sort of stuff that requires others to avoid the margins of life or run away from loud noises. Nope. War zones, wrecks, motorcycles and ‘hold my beer’ sort of dares, to one degree or another all seem to fit into the ag pilot’s sea bag. Perhaps that’s why some of us hobble a little when we exit the cockpit... It’s times like this, when I walk into the office to complete the paperwork, that I take a minute to calculate the cost of an ag pilot. I see pilots I fly with as extensions of all of us. I sometimes wonder how I can be considered worthy to be counted as one among them. Then I thank God that I am, and pray His grace continues for all of us. Decades of trying, failing, succeeding and continuing to push onward are logged in the DNA of every ag pilot out there. From the new guy to the old hands, we all share the heritage of those who built the foundation of this crazy industry. The pioneers of our nation laid out roads to bring people, places, and things together. Ours built runways from old tracks of dirt and hammered together flying contraptions that would mesmerize and inspire others to do more of the same. Men who knew flying machines looked at wide fields of cotton, corn,

soybeans, everything from apples to zucchini and decided there was a better way to help farmers protect their crops. The airplane reshaped warfare and travel across the world. Ways were invented to use the new invention of powered flight. Agriculture wasn’t too far behind. Though our advancements came slowly at first, we didn’t have a vast military budget or the deep pockets of millionaire businessmen. But, they came and were refined over decades of trial and error. The blood of many of our fellow aviators mixed with oil and gasoline as it soaked into the ground beneath the attempts that led to greater things. They were just like us. A little rough around the edges. A hard set jaw. Lines around the eyes from hours squinting into the sun. A little bit of a fatalistic humor, patriotic to the core and a deeply embedded necessity to always go above and beyond the average. We, like them, shun the mundane, skip past the instructions and maybe a little too often leave the safety guards off. No matter what, we do what we do because if we didn’t, we would be miserable. We would be three dimensional beings living in a two dimensional world. Birds in a cage. As the days of July unfold the Valley and acres sweep beneath our wings, we’ll all log the hours in the best way we can. The future is like a new day dawning. Bright and clear, holding the promise of a blank page yet unwritten. The horizon is always just a little bit out of reach, maybe that’s the way it’s supposed to be, but we all continue to reach for it because that’s what we do and the world wouldn’t turn right without guys like us to do it. Whether you’re greeting the dawn by starting your machine to begin the day or by shutting it down to finish the night, if you’re flying over the corn fields of the midwest, rice in the Delta, or cotton in California or the South, keep in mind you are one of the few who get to do it. Here and now in your place in history, along with the rest of us who are just like you. Never take it for granted and never fail to see the beauty of the world from the perspective afforded you. The men who came before us expect it. Those who will came after us require it. Fly Well, and Stay Safe!

Ferrying a crop duster to South America by Matt Morrissey I had been in the air maybe five or six hours, varying between 13,000 and 15,000 feet, avoiding afternoon tropical convective build-ups. I had taken off that morning from Tapachula, Mexico, in this factory-new agricultural Air Tractor 401 with its ninecylinder radial engine, rather than the more common PT-6A turbine engine that I had been flying behind recently.
technique. There really is no easy way to transition from midflight levels (10,000 to 18,000 feet) to ground level. Basically, it is reduce power to idle and stick forward. There are a lot of turns involved during the descent to avoid the rain and thunderstorms. Eventually you end up just over the jungle with enough forward visibility to see the bases of the cloud deck and dodge the shafts of tropical downpours.
The factory plumbed the hopper into a usable fuel tank for long, international ferry flights. With a full hopper of fuel and long range wing tanks, the plane is a virtual flying gas tank and can stay aloft all day without refueling. I had just flown over Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Costa Rica. I was attempting to get over or around the convective buildups that had formed over the Serrania de Tabasara mountain range in Panama. These late afternoon build-ups had formed in and around the 12,000foot jungle mountain peaks. Very typical for this time of day. I had only one more hour of flying (I thought) before I reached Panama City, my first stop on the way to Turbo, Colombia.
The majority of the aircraft I delivered to Latin and South America were not equipped with radios, transponders, or navigational equipment. I had developed my own “ferry kit as I called it. It was basic at first: a communications radio and transponder. They were wired into a portable aluminum rack (painted yellow to match the standard Air Tractor color) that I could hang from inside the cockpit door rail.
Up to this point, the trip from the Air Tractor factory had been uneventful and trouble-free. But now the weather was rapidly starting to form along the southern coast of Panama between me and the airport. Flying near or over the equator in light aircraft under VFR conditions takes a certain amount of experience and skill. When I first started flying in this part of the world, I had neither. One thing you learn very quickly is that convective activity starts to build during the late morning and rapidly develops into the early afternoon. The key to getting through the intertropical convergence zone is to be safely on the ground by around 1500 local time. I had climbed as high as I could this day to stay on top and between the towering afternoon cumulus. Given the equatorial weather patterns, afternoon portions of these types of flights are typically spent at treetop level. I have crossed the Amazon rain forest a number of times using this

The transponder antenna was fed into the drain hole on the floorboard in the cockpit and duct taped to the bottom of the aircraft. The radio antenna was fitted through an air vent and placed on the side of the fuselage. I used two Garmin GPSs, tie-wrapped together and mounted on the hopper tank shelf in front of my knees. This is where I placed my other essential items: cigars, lighter and camera. Over the years my kit included other instruments such as turn and bank, attitude and vertical speed indicators. My power supply is two wires I clipped to the back of the circuit breaker panel. After my deliveries, I could pack all this equipment into a specially-made case with foam interiors that perfectly fit all these instruments. Another case was used to pack my extensive collection of jungle and ocean survival gear. Although I never intended to fly IFR, this equipment came in use many times to climb and let down through frequent unforecasted weather. I let down to just above the treetops. I was trying to follow a road through the weather across the Peninsula de Azuero. My

plan was to intercept the coast and follow it to the northeast and to Panama City. It started raining again and I cut back, turned, circled and tried everything I could to get through. Finally, I had to give up and turn around. My next plan was to try and get to Panama City via the north coast. I had to climb back up to 15,000 feet. I found a valley of clouds through the mountains and was able to get back on top. I realized that I was still slightly hypoxic from my previous time at altitude. My brain was foggy, my breathing rapid. After only a short time and clear of the mountains I let back down to just above the jungle canopy. This time I was over the Golfo de los Mosquitos in heavy rain and poor visibility. I flew for only a few more minutes and realized there was going to be no way through.

closing in behind me. I felt trapped. Weather was all around and nothing but dense jungle below. I started to get frustrated and really worried. An hour and a half had passed and I was no closer to Panama City. My only alternate airfield was back across the mountains. The last thing I wanted to do was climb back up to 15,000 feet, but I had no choice. The airport of David was 45 minutes away on the border of Costa Rica. Since I had descended down over the Golfo de los Mosquitos, I had detected an exhaust odor coming off the Pratt & Whitney 1340 engine. In fact it was making me nauseated. I had also noticed I was picking up an oily film on my windshield, making it difficult to see forward. I realized I had been so caught up in trying to get through the weather that I had not noticed. When I started to add power to climb back up to cross the mountains, the engine coughed, backfired and just wouldn’t take the throttle. The exhaust odor got worse and now I could see what appeared to be smoke coming off the front of the motor.
The intertropical convergence zone can create some unpleasant flying conditions by late afternoon. on to it until I was absolutely forced to ditch. I kept climbing.
I tried to advance the throttle very slowly and manually adjust the fuel mixture, but the engine just wouldn’t take the power. I was still able to climb slowly up another shaft of clouds. I honestly didn’t think the engine would keep running long enough for me to clear the mountain range ahead of me.
For the first time in my flying life, I thought I wasn’t going to make it down safely. I was actually scared. Interestingly enough, I was not worried about losing the aircraft. I was just concerned about my personal survival. As I was climbing, I began planning on how best to crash into the trees. Because if that engine quit, I would be coming down in a hurry. I had decided against the water.
I started to look for a place to make an emergency landing if needed. As I was climbing, I was also planning for the worst case scenario. There was nothing but ocean and jungle. I considered dumping the remaining fuel in the hopper but decided to hang
Finally I made it to 15,000 feet and turned for the airport at David. I was VFR on top of the weather and mountains with a rough running engine. After what seemed like a lifetime, I descended into David and landed. After clearing the runway, I

performed an engine runup to check the magnetos, carburetor, mixture and propeller. All the systems were perfectly fine. I thought long and hard about what could have caused me to experience these issues in flight. I determined that I had severe carburetor ice which was causing the engine to act so erratically. And the smoke I saw was actually moisture from the tropical air coming off of the propeller tips as I increased the pitch of the blades to climb settings. The exhaust I smelled? Well, that’s normal for a radial engine. The next morning, I landed in Panama City in clear weather. I was able to refuel, pay all the fees required and prepare to depart. However, there always seemed to be another hand in the air wanting more money for one more fee or another. Finally I had enough and got into the Air Tractor and started the engine. Apparently I didn’t tip off the right guys because no one on ground control frequency would answer my calls to taxi. Other aircraft could hear me so I knew the radio was working. I switched to tower frequency and got the same lack of response. I waited and waited with the engine running. There was very little traffic and no one was on final approach to land. I taxied onto the active runway and simply took off. In four hours, this was not going to be my problem. How did the authorities react in Panama City? Growing peanuts with a Thrush by Bill Lavender Graham and I were fortunate enough recently to be able to visit one of the largest peanut growers in Argentina through the efforts of Diego Cardama of Aerotec; the Argentine and Chilean Thrush dealer. Prodeman, S.A. is a very large, family owned farming operation of more than 100,000 hectares (247,000 acres) of which 42,000 hectares (103,784 acres) are peanuts. Its main objective is growing and exporting peanuts from planting to packaging, using the trade name PRODEMAN for worldwide bulk exported peanuts and Maní King end user packaging for the local market. Thus, the name Prodeman comes from “PROduccion DE MANi” (peanut production).

Here, the 510G operates from a paved 1300-meter (4,265 feet) airstrip near Villa Huidobro in southwestern Cordoba Province Argentina. Carlos Bruno just completed his second season with the first one flying for another operator in a Pawnee 300 Brave. Carlos Bruno is still a pilot in the Argentine air force flying the turboprop Embraer Tucano, glider instructor and other aircraft. Prodeman has such a large peanut farming operation, as well as other crops like wheat, soybean, and corn, that it decided to purchase a new 510G Thrush from Aerotec. According to Prodeman’s aviation manager and chief pilot, Diego Cerioni,

INTERNATIONAL Prodeman’s 510G Thrush is well outfitted with an Electronics International MVP-50T and Ag-Nav Guia Platinum GPS with flow control and Internet connectivity for file transfer. “Prodeman has always been at the forefront with technology and farming practices. We contracted with the Universidad Nacional de Rio Cuarto to conduct a three-year study of aerial vs ground pesticide applications. The study revealed a yield increase up to 10% using the airplane. From that point on, the airplane has been used exclusively

for fungicide and pesticide applications on Prodeman’s peanuts.” Exporting 90% of 140,000 tons of peanuts produced during a growing season with an average yield of 4 to 4.5 tons per hectare (3,000-3,500 lbs/ ac), it is critical that fungi and insects are controlled. To achieve this, Alan
McCracken, an aerial application consultant from the United States, is hired every year to set up the aircraft spray system for optimum results. Fungicide applications are made at five-six liters per hectare (l/ha) (0.50.6 GPA) and insecticide applications at 2-3 l/ha (0.2-0.3 GPA). The booms

The all new Ag-Nav standalone flow controller is a solution for efficient and accurate aerial application of granular products. The system is designed with a unique flow controller that uses 2 built-in motors to accurately adjust the dispersing rates of granular material, providing a high level of accuracy. With USB support, material types and application rates are stored and may be changed on-the-fly. Safety features include: Gate jammed auto-stop, and info messages on screen. 2740 N Sheridan Road | Tulsa, OK 74115 Tel: 918-835-9924 | Fax: 918-835-3681 www.airacc.com

With these application rates, the 510G is capable of carrying from 380-hectare loads (940 acres) to as many as 965 hectares (2,385 acres). During the larger loads, the aircraft can have over three-hour missions. The 510G’s 863-liter fuel capacity (228 gallons) allows for an ample safety margin with at least an hour’s fuel reserve. In this case Prodeman has two pilots per aircraft, switching pilots every landing when working the whole day, so every flight is with a fresh pilot. Although the 510G is capable of spraying 70,000 hectares (173,000 acres) during the growing season for peanuts, it is not enough. During our visit, Prodeman ordered a second 510G
Thrush to help meet the demand. This need will be further compounded by the proposed expansion of planting an additional 5,000 - 10,000 hectares (12,350 - 24,710 acres) of peanuts. For the first time this year, Prodeman has started making cover crop applications with the 510G. Wheat seed is spread at 25-70 kg/ha (22 - 62 lb/ac) using a Transland Swathmaster with a 24-meter (79 feet) swath width. Due to the narrow time window for spreading the seed, only 20,000 hectares (49,400 acres) were covered this season. Next year using the second 510G Thrush, the number of hectares covered will increase. With corporate offices based in General Cabrera and the main airstrip based near Villa Huidobro, about 250 kilometers (155 miles) to the south, Prodeman finds the use of a King Air C90A to be an efficient mode of transportation. Also in the Prodeman aviation fleet is a Robinson R66 turbine powered helicopter. It is based at the main base in
General Cabrera where it can transport to the field both mechanical technicians to keep equipment operational and agricultural technicians to monitor crops. The quicker management of crops with the R66, allows earlier applications of pesticides, getting better yields. At time of seeding and harvesting, a technician is being carried to every machine for adjusting machinery and therefore increasing the yield. For example, a harvesting machine not being at its best setup can loose hundreds of kilograms of crop per hectare. The helicopter easily pays for itself when moving technicians to each machine with as many as 40 machines working at the same time in a radius of 300 kilometers (185 miles).
More about Prodeman: Prodeman is a Cavigliasso family run operation formed in 1984 by its president, Oscar Cavigliasso. By the end of 1994, in General Cabrera in the province of Cordoba Argentina, new facilities were built on 24 hectares (60 acres) that cover 64,000 (685,000 sq ft)

Once the peanuts are at the Prodeman processing facility, it can further dry the peanuts at a rate of 2,000 tons a day. 110,000 tons can be stored until ready for processing. The company has a blanching capacity of 300 tons of peanuts per day, while an additional 550 tons of raw peanut production can be completed. Cold storage capacity is 40,000 tons. AT-602: Trim your overhead. You’ll reduce costs and increase profit margins when you scale a multi-plane operation down to a single-plane operation. Air Tractor’s AT-602 makes it an easy choice. The big 630-gallon payload moves you up to high volume production, reduces loads, saves time and helps trim operating expenses compared with two smaller planes. The AT-602 is the ideal solution for 5-gallon work on center-pivot circles. Step it up with an AT-602. From Conflict Films: “Imagine a profession where flying 5 feet off the ground around tree’s and under powerlines is a daily occurrence. Highly Skilled and trained pilots fly into raging bush fires to help control the blaze. Everyday this group of professionals quietly go about their job helping to feed and protect our nation. This is the story of aerial application and the four seasons the industry relies and revolves around.”
