Where is the airplane? I was driving down the highway one day when I came upon a large truck. On the back of the truck was a bumper sticker that read: “This truck is overloaded with federal regulations. Don’t like trucks? Stop eating, problem solved!”

its load. Yes, it is an inconvenience for us. But, the truck is a necessity that we must tolerate. Truckers are burden with laws, particularly in the U.S. where there are special police that stops without cause to check the truck and its driver.

Many automobile drivers don’t like sharing the road with large trucks. Often the trucks are slow and sometimes even dangerous in the way they are driven. However, there are truck drivers that take their profession seriously and drive accordingly. You can easily spot those trucks.

Most trucking regulations are good for the public and even the trucking company and its drivers, enhancing safety. Safety is paramount in operating a successful business; for both trucking and ag-aviation. Like with truckers, the safest ag-operators are evident. When I visit an ag-operation, I can often quickly determine if it is a good operation, usually by the way the company addresses safety. Those that take safety seriously are the most successful.

The bumper sticker says a lot in a few words that relate well with agricultural aviation. For those who see ag aircraft working a field and don’t appreciate it, then maybe they should stop eating, too. Some people don’t take the time to think through the implications of their complaints. No one is not going to stop eating. And, we are not going to stop spraying crops with airplanes. Seven billion mouths to feed every day will attest to that, though some would like to believe aircraft are not necessary in the production of food and fiber. Those same people don’t complain when the forest is on fire and about to burn their homes. Where’s the airplane? They don’t complain when there is an outbreak of mosquitoes that could be carrying the Zika or West Nile viruses. Where’s the airplane? As drivers, we have to appreciate the slow truck chugging down the road with

I have often thought that if a business does not take care of itself, equipment and people, then why would it take care of me? When I see rundown agaircraft, contaminated loading areas and a host of other unprofessional indicators, I wonder how good of a job does this company do for its customers? Appearances and safety go hand-inhand, its professionalism. A flying service does not have to be large and highly profitable with several ag-aircraft to be professional. Anyone can clean up the aircraft and the work area. Seemingly small things, such as safety posters and personal protection equipment can go a long way toward having the right mindset. This also boosts the morale of employees.

When I see a trucker driving down the highway, giving courtesy signals, going the correct speed in the correct lane, in a truck that is well taken care of, my respect and tolerance for that truck improves greatly. It is the same for the agoperator. Perhaps those who complain about ag-aviation don’t always see the aircraft up close or visit the operation. But, they do notice if the pilot takes time to avoid turning over their houses, or not waking them before sunrise, or not letting the application drift onto their property. Ag-aviation is no longer a “jump in the airplane and go spray” business. Like the trucker, we are burden with regulations and it takes more effort than ever to comply when we would rather be flying. True, people are not going to stop eating. However, consideration breeds tolerance and regulations tend to be the end result of our actions. Until next month, Keep Turning…

agair mail cover Awesome article Bill and Graham! And the cover...Neat! That’s always been my favorite shot of my plane and what a surprise to see it on the cover! I didn’t even think you had it. Nick was quick to take credit for the photo, which he took from a vertical fuel tank that used to sit by the hangar but is gone now. It was ‘09, his break-in year and he was pretty stoked about getting into the business so he was taking a lot of pictures to remember it all. Lucky for us, huh? Brenda and I flew over to the coast after work yesterday and enjoyed watching the sunset on the ocean. Life’s Good! Nick’s holding down the fort today and I think Brenda scheduled everything else for Tuesday. It’s been a great season so far. Just missed our 40,000-acre goal by 236 acres. One of our organic guys was cut back 25% because of price and didn’t plant a couple of fields. But oh well, no big deal... everything’s still hanging together which is the most important. Eagle Vistas student pilots

Grant King has completed his Private Pilot and ag pilot training with Eagle Vistas, all in tailwheel. Grant is working on building tailwheel time and his Commercial Pilot (with Instrument rating) License requirements in his Decathlon and then will seek an entry level ag pilot position.

Paul Thompson is working on a traveling ground crew for B & S Air, Lumpkin, Georgia, loading helicopter and fixed wing aircraft this summer. Paul has his Commercial Pilot and ag pilot training complete. Besides learning the ag business from the ground side, Paul plans to build his tailwheel time and work towards his next goal of an entry level ag pilot position.

Todd Walberg has secured an entry level ag pilot position in a Pawnee and will be working for a Commercial Operator near his home town.

A different operation starts in Brazil by Ernesto Franzen MONTE MOR, BRAZIL – Except for a few experimental applications on cocoa crops in the late 1970s, and over other crops in the 1980s, no rotary-wing aerial applications have been made in Brazil – until now. This is finally changing – and this change is taking place in a whole different way! Usually, most operations start with an ag pilot. He begins flying as a hired pilot, then after becoming experienced he buys a small piston airplane and starts his own spraying service. As he makes more money, he upgrades his airplane and/or buys more airplanes. Eventually, some operations will become aircraft dealers. It is a whole different history with Climb Aircraft Division. Based in Monte Mor, a small town close to Campinas, in the state of São Paulo, Climb Aircraft Division is a

division of Quimigel Indústria, Comércio e Serviços Aéreos Especializados Ltda., a company with over 30 years in the chemical business. Since 2013, Climb Aircraft Division has been selling new and used helicopters, besides being a Robinson Helicopter Company certified helicopter maintenance shop, a pilot school and training center, an FBO and now it is also an ag operation. For a fixed-wing operator, using a helicopter to spray crops may not make much sense. Helicopters are more complex aircraft and therefore more expensive to operate. Flying at slower speeds and carrying a smaller load than fixed-wing aircraft of the same category, they seem to be unable to compete with them. Well, as is often the case, appearances can be deceiving. When topography gets too hilly, helicopters

can often go where it is not practical to spray with an airplane. Their turns are much tighter and some believe the downwash from their rotors “throws” the spray down into the crops, making for a virtually drift-free application. This makes them highly desirable for applications in sensitive areas, like crops close to urban areas. They also compensate for their slower application speed and smaller loads by using any open space close to the crop as a landing pad - or, as is often the case, having a landing pad on the top of a loading truck. Just park it next to the crop and take advantage of virtually zero-distance ferries! It gets easier to understand why a helicopter operator decided to go ag instead of the other way around, a


fixed-wing ag operator deciding to add a rotorcraft to expand his fleet, if you realize that ag airplanes have to be specially designed to carry a load and have the performance and maneuverability to spray safely and efficiently by flying “low and slow”, since most “regular” airplanes are designed to fly high and fast. Almost all helicopters, on the other hand, are built to fly low and slow! So you can get mostly any chopper of your choice and just strap spraying equipment to it – the Simplex spray system under Climb’s Robinson R44 can be strapped on and removed in minutes. Therefore, if you already have a helicopter, it is a comparatively small investment to turn it into an aerial applicator. Plus, when your spraying is done, you can remove the spray system from the chopper and use it for any of the several missions these versatile machines can accomplish!

SPE electrostatic spray system allows the operator to make highly effective applications using low volumes of spray mix. This is especially advantageous for a helicopter with its limited hopper tank size. When Climb Aircraft Division Executive VP Ramiro Leal realized that in the United States, Chile and Australia treat crops with rotary-wing aircraft profitably, while no one was doing it in Brazil, Climb Aircraft Division decided to get in the helicopter aerial application business.

in Brazil, and no training course available either, Maicon applied to ANAC (Brazil`s FAA) for a rule exemption, and has thus been certified as a helicopter ag pilot – the first one under ANAC rules. For him, Climb Aircraft Division was equipped an Robinson R44 with a Simplex spray system with a 490-liter (129 gallons) hopper, which is limited by the Robinson’s performance to 320 liters (85 gallons), and conventional spray booms equipped with CP Nozzles. An Ag Nav Guía GPS with internal light bar is used for guidance. An SPE Electrostatic systems is also used. With this setup, the R44 sprays a 14-meter swath (46 feet) at 50 to 70 knots, depending on the application requirements. An Isolair external bucket is being acquired for solid applications.

they would have to prove to farmers, agronomists and chemical company representatives that the helicopter could be a cost-effective solution to their crop pest and disease issues. For that, they had their Robinson spray system tested by independent and chemical company consultants over citrus, sugarcane, soybeans and corn, all with excellent results. Granular permethrin on corn, Mirex eating dog by L. B. Davis Davis Ag Consultants. Inc. A few years ago we received a claim for bodily injury from drift of granular permethrin applied to corn. A lawsuit had already been filed and a defense council appointed prior to our assignment of the investigation. Our lawyer obtained permission for us to go on the property and talk to the claimants. We flew commercial to the nearest airport, rented a car and proceeded to the claim site. The claimants’ property was across the road from the treated corn, located so that the logical way to fly the field was to turn over the property. Much of the furniture had been moved out of the house and was under a plastic cover in the yard. Inside the house, a large window overlooked the corn from the second floor. We were told the window had been closed at the time, so we wondered how any of the permethrin could get inside.

However, they produced a chemical analysis report showing the presence of permethrin, supposedly from inside the house. They alleged several maladies, describing how these affected their physical condition, allegedly supported by a medical doctor. After listening to their allegations for quite some time, we took our leave and returned to the airport to await our flight home. While waiting in the airport, I picked up an abandoned newspaper. On an inside page, there was a headline “Prominent Dermatologist Lambasts Associates for Continued Use of BHC for Scabies”. BHC is benzene hexachloride, in common use at that time as a general insecticide. The article went on to say that a completely safe replacement was available as a cream containing 5% permethrin. I took the newspaper home, checked Walmart and other pharmacies and found that this 5% permethrin cream for the treatment of scabies could be

ground up corn cobs, so that it could be distributed like granular materials or seed. The applications in most of the Mississippi Delta were made from the Greenville Municipal Airport. We set up a large tent to house the bags of Mirex and loaded the aircraft near the tent. Invariably, a bag would get broken and Mirex spilled on the ground. A large blue tick hound dog came up. He was “skin & bones” and it was hard to find a spot on his skin that was not sore with scabies.

The dog started to eat the spilled Mirex, I suppose because of the soybean oil. It did not appear to affect him and he continued to eat the spilled Mirex while we were working from there (about three months). The workers started giving him their lunch scraps. His condition improved markedly, including curing the scabies. When we finished working from that location, the dog was no longer in poor condition and he had a beautiful, scabies free coat. He was a very beautiful blue tick hound. One of the workers took him home. Although the hound dog proved Mirex was a safe chemical, the “do-gooders” and environmentalists created such fear that Mirex applications were halted and never resumed.

Operator, Jerry Jones, says, “I convinced my customer base to pool their spring potash prescription applications together for greater efficiency. A map was generated that covered 14,034 acres with 903 tons of potash at 8 different rates from 0-200 lbs per acre. Pilot David Miller has used this system since 2009 while flying a 602 Air Tractor for Betterfly in Indianola. David reports, ‘I flew the job over 63.58 hobb hours and 14 days which included some weather delays. Runs were 11 miles long with some runs requiring three 4000 lb loads. The material ran out on the next to last pass being off by only 1 ton on 903 tons. We use the system at the prescription level a lot but it works great in constant rate on every job. Passes are uniform upwind and downwind even on a 20 mph day giving the grower a better quality job. On top of that, your arm isn’t worn out at the end of the day.’ ”

Meeting loader truck needs in the Cayman Islands by Dan Whited At Auger Dan we try to meet the needs of aerial applications in the dry material loading equipment. Over time, equipment has needed to evolve to meet loading requirements. These improvements led to scales, clear and adjustable height sock, anti-dribble valve (to stop spillage in sensitive loading areas), extensive truck modifications and a long list of other

modifications. Recently, Auger Dan responded to a request to develop a belt loader system. I was approached at the NAAA convention about building a belt conveyor truck for loading a dry granular product for mosquito control in the Cayman Islands. The Cayman Island government operates two 550 Thrushes that apply the product as directed by their Mosquito Control Department. Jeff Marshall, Maintenance and Engineering Manager for Mosquito Research and Control Unit (MRCU) for the Cayman Island Government, had requirements he wanted to meet for a belt loader. These requirements included a new chassis, belt loader, scales, a 3000 lbs. minimum capacity hopper and a lump breaker in the hopper. This system needed to be able to ship in a container. The plan was to build a straight tube belt loader similar to previous units and put it on a truck chassis. The final unit would look similar to a baggage loader seen at airports. The operator of the belt system would be in the open. This plan presented two problems. The first problem was the appropriate chassis would not be available for more than a year. The answer to this problem was to buy a cab and chassis and cut the cab off at the dash, remove doors and cut the cab off behind seats. The second problem was once the new Dodge cab and chassis arrived at the shop and photographs sent to the customer, the response from upper management at the MRCU was, “Don’t cut the

After consulting with the belt supplier about how to pivot the belt tube or fold it, I was advised by using a completely different type of belt, it could be done. Folding the tube down like a shot gun, the tube can be placed back in the load position without the need to readjust the belt. The final belt loading unit was 95.5 inches tall and 35 feet long when lowered. The hopper will hold approximately 5,000 pounds. The unit has scales and a hydraulic powered lump breaker with a speed control of motor RPM. The unit controls are built into the truck dash. Lane Aviation hosts students Lane Aviation, Inc. based in Rosenburg, Texas, recently hosted local high school students that were exploring career paths within their community. Lane Aviation’s Logan Lane led the presentation that included tours and live demonstrations of the Air Tractor 502XP. “Throughout the whole presentation, I had a 502XP and -34AG engine in front of them to expand further on how the engine

operates and what the different parts of the plane are used for. At the end, some students came up to look inside the cockpit and ask more questions. A handful seemed to show some genuine interest in it or at least in aviation as a whole. We wrapped it up with a Lane Aviation pilot performing a demo in the XP with a few passes, then dumping a couple hundred gallons of water down the runway,” commented Lane. Thrush launches major ag aviation awareness campaign Tour stops planned for multiple cities – beginning with EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh ALBANY, GA—Thrush aircraft is dedicating considerable resources and effort to a new marketing campaign designed to build awareness among an international audience regarding the benefits of agricultural aviation. New Zealand conference by John Sinclair Executive Officer NZAAA/NZHA The New Zealand Agricultural Aviation Association, in conjunction with the New Zealand Helicopter Association, held its annual conference in Wellington on the North Island June 25-29. One of the conference topics was the Association’s “Down to the Wire” campaign. NZAAA Chairman Alan Beck is championing an initiative to have farm wires taken down and tied to a fence line so that they at no point extend above the fence they are tied to. Current practice is to run electric fence feeder wires across gullies at heights up to 400 feet. The Down to the Wire programme involves educating landowners, then rewarding them with a framed certificate of appreciation signed by Chairman Beck when they take their wires down. So far, nearly 100 landowners have been awarded certificates. The New Zealand CAA is helping and will fund the removal of wires if farmers are too busy. Thus far, 28 New

Zealand ag-pilots have lost their lives through wire strikes. The programme does not involve electric power lines, as these are much more visible and are reasonably predictable in their routing. The Association is soon to announce a major sponsor for the programme that will enable the mounting of signage on many New Zealand rural roads. The photo shows the accident scene of the last ag-pilot, Peter Robb, to die from a wire strike. Robb’s daughter, Shannon Carr, is very active speaking at events to spread the word of the danger wires create. It is spell bounding to hear her speak and explain how she found out from the media that her father had been killed. There are 26 ambassadors throughout New Zealand who are spreading the word about Down to the Wire. Each has a certificate signed by Chairman Beck and the Director of CAA. —End

Not a Drone Day Recently John Sinclair, Executive Director for the New Zealand Agricultural Aviation Association and New Zealand Helicopter Association, attended the Rotortech conference in Queensland. A fellow there went to town and purchased a fairly expensive drone. He got the lowdown on starting it and actually flew it out the back of the shop where he bought it. He returned to the convention and told a few of the lads, “Watch this.” Try as he might, the drone wouldn’t start. With great loss of face, he rang the shop owner who asked him where he was. “Twin Waters,” was the response. The shop man advised, “So you are about one kilometre away from Maroochydore Airport and CASA rules say you are not allowed to fly a drone within four km. The many advantages of aerial application by John Garr and Jerry Green of GarrCo Products Aerial application can be just as effective as ground application, but that characterization does not do aerial application justice. Aerial application has many advantages. We thought it would be a good idea to review those advantages this month in case we need to articulate them to our customers and critics.

The extra height above the crop canopy with aerial application can help create a more uniform spray pattern. Nozzles can be too close to their target and give an uneven application, especially when a ground boom does not stay level in rough and uneven terrain. Aerial application can also apply seed and dry fertilizer formulations more uniformly

day. The ability to apply pesticides rapidly at their optimum time is a big advantage for aerial application. Sometimes growers want to delay applications to reduce input costs, particularly when crop prices are low. Their hope is that the pest infestation will not develop enough to reduce yield, or that only one application will be effective if they wait for weeds to germinate or insects to hatch. When growers wait, aerial application is the best way to go. A crop never gets too big to make an aerial application, although the applicator will probably need to add a deposition and retention adjuvant to get the spray to penetrate the canopy and deposit where the pests are. Ag pilots are the most trained applicators in the world. Okay, we concede much of that training is how to fly, but the average ag pilot has over 21 years of experience and received a lot of application education attending seminars, reading pesticide literature and participating in the National Agricultural Aviation

Research & Education Foundation’s Operation S.A.F.E. (Self-regulating Application and Flight Efficiency) program. The S.A.F.E. program makes it possible for applicators to attend fly-in clinics and have their aircraft professionally analyzed and adjusted to minimize drift and maximize the efficacy of the application. Today’s ag aircraft use sophisticated precision application equipment such as GPS (global positioning systems), GIS (geographical information systems), real time meteorological systems, variablerate flow control valves, single-boom shutoff valves and smokers to identify wind speed and direction.

Growing aerial opportunities Late season application of pesticides and fertilizers are a rapidly growing opportunity for aerial application. Growers increasingly need to apply fungicides, fertilizer, insecticides and plant growth regulators at late crop stages. The crop is never too big for aerial application although you will likely

need a deposition and retention aid to get a pesticide to penetrate into the canopy and deposited where needed. Experts have extensively studied and finding that late application of nitrogen fertilizer on corn as part of a two-step early and late system gives higher yields with less total N applied. That system consistently gives the highest corn yields on the Garr farm and making a second fertilizer application aerially is now our standard practice. A new opportunity for aerial application is corn stubble management. The use of foliar fungicides and biotech insect resistance traits have increased stalk strength and slowed decomposition. The stalk residues can damage expensive tires and make planting and cultivation difficult.
