This is my everything My degree is in aerospace engineering, but I also see myself as a problem solver. If I design an airframe improvement that makes every swath more productive… it adds up. And shows up on your bottom line. Everything I do to design a safer, more productive, more efficient Air Tractor means a lot to you. It means a lot to me, too. If there’s a better way, I’ll find it.

What’s in store for this month In this month’s edition of AgAir Update, the cover story is about my evaluation flight of Embraer’s redesigned Ipanema EMB203 aircraft. Without hesitation, I can say I enjoyed flying it. The last 20 years of my active career in ag-flying was in a turbine Thrush. Anytime I have the opportunity to fly an aircraft that is completely different, I am eager to do so. One of the things that I have always felt strongly about when it comes to ag-aircraft design is the attention paid to aerodynamics. The EMB203 is an exemplary model of using aerodynamics to improve the performance of an aircraft. I realize adding more horsepower to an already certified ag-plane has its certification challenges. However, to return to the “drawing board” to make airframe changes that improve performance can be even more challenging. Embraer has the advantage of access to personnel, design and manufacturing equipment of a large and successful aircraft factory. Based in Botucatu, Brazil, the EMB203 is built at the same facility as Embraer’s business jets. Hopefully, when you read the article it will give you a greater insight to the attributes of this aircraft. The Ipanema is a mainstay ag-plane in Brazil that meets the demands for providing a smaller and efficient agplane. While in Botucatu, I had the pleasure of visiting my old friends at AeroGlobo. Based at their offices is an AT-802 simulator designed to train ag-pilots to aerially fight fires with this specific model aircraft. I had flown the simulator a couple of times before during visits to Botucatu in the
A-6
agairupdate.com
past. As with any new technology, there were issues to be resolved. The simulator is a visual-style unit constructed from an actual AT-802 cockpit. It is as realistic as anyone could possible hope for when it comes to aircraft simulators. The first time I flew the aircraft, I could not land it! Of course, that is not really what the simulator is designed to teach. Instead, it is about procedures for fighting fires, routine and emergency. However, the last time I flew the simulator I was able to land it due to vast improvements in handling characteristics. Now, the simulator is an excellent trainer for AT-802 pilots. This month Graham (my son) and I have airline tickets for travel in Argentina. I plan to visit with Diego Cardama, the Argentine Thrush dealer. I’ll also be visiting with several ag-operators travelling between Mendoza and Buenos Aires with a deviation to Cicaré, the Argentine helicopter manufacturer. Cicaré has just built a spray system for the Cicaré 7B model. Also in this May edition, you will read about the delivery of an AT-504 to Costa Rica. El Colono Agropecuario received its 14th Air Tractor from Lane Aviation of Rosenberg, Texas. I had visited with company manager Christian Castillo Ramos, whose family owns the business, several years ago. It is a very impressive company, and I know you will enjoy reading about Logan Lane and Pat Kornegay’s flight from Texas to Costa Rica in the AT-504. I just returned from Air Tractor/ Transland’s annual spray clinic fly-in at the Air Tractor factory in Olney, Texas. Everything was done first class, except
for the weather. That was a shame for those who could not fly in; they missed a fantastic event. There were factory tours, including the new electrophoretic painting process (e-coat) facility. You will read more in future editions of AgAir Update that will tell all about this new painting system that will vastly improve the already excellent paint quality of Air Tractors. Air Tractor is the only aircraft manufacturer using this painting system, although car manufacturers have been using it for years. However, despite the weather, several aircraft were able to attend so that Dr. Dennis Gardisser of WRK Arkansas could evaluate their spray patterns. Also, there was a demo flight of the Air Tractor Yield Defender drone. The Texas Department of Ag made a presentation, as did a local chemical representative. Texas barbecue was served for lunch the first day and a fantastic Louisiana crawfish/shrimp boil with boudin and sausage served the second day for lunch. Summer is coming at us full blast. I plan to be traveling around the countryside visiting ag-operators and AgAir Update advertisers for articles about their businesses. With summer comes heat and we all know what that means; an increase in density altitude, which also means the ag-aircraft simply does not perform as well. Keep that in mind when you line up for take off. Until next month, Keep Turning…

agair mail YouTube I was playing on the web tonight when I came across an article from 2010 in AgAir Update stating that you owned N6632Q. I now have the airplane in northern Idaho. I operate off of four private strips here. The Ag-Cat has a PT6A-20 and both engine and it turned over 25,000 hours last season. It is the best flying Ag-Cat that I have been around. Anyway, just thought I’d send you a message. Jared Segebartt Moscow, ID Good morning Jared; Wow, did you take me for a trip down memory lane! I bought N6632Q new from Mid-Continent in 1977, flying it back from Elmira, New York in January. What a trip for a southern boy who had never hardly seen snow, much less flown in it. At the time I picked up the aircraft, the only ag planes I had flown were a C-188 and a Pawnee. My first flight was the departure from Elmira heading south with
only a 64-gallon fuel tank. Of course, no instruments or radio, which created a dilemma. Most of the uncontrolled airports were snowed in and closed, while those open had control towers. Evidently, I made it home, but there were some tight fuel legs at 90 mph and just slightly over 2 hours fuel range. I flew N6632Q for a season with its 450 hp radial engine and decided that wasn’t enough power. I took it to Dothan Aviation and they exchanged the engine with a 600 hp radial. That made all the difference in the world, believe me. But, I’m sure nothing like the performance that -20 provides. I owned N6632Q for three seasons before selling it to an operator in South Georgia and replacing it with a new 400-gallon Turbo Thrush with the PT6A-11AG engine. That is another story in itself! Take care and thanks for the memories,—Bill

seat My name is Dennis Neylan from Airspray Kenya/Tanzania. On the 1st of February I had a catastrophic engine failure in my Cessna 188 over high terrain and thick forest. I managed to put her down in a small corn patch with minimal injuries to myself, but the aircraft was written off. I now don’t have a plane to do any work and subsequently had to pass all my contracts onto another company. I’m therefore looking for a seat and would be willing to relocate if necessary. I believe there is a fire seat in Cyprus? I have attached a copy of my CV and scan of my current passport. Please pass my warmest regards to Bill, he is familiar with my family

making all the noise. Apparently a bottom scraper attorney got a hold of the incident and is trying to make something of it. Of course, the media is all over it. I did get facts to our local media at my annual Open House yesterday (March 31), as I have the local talk show host here to do his show. So, hopefully our local people will at least have heard these facts and the good news about our industry where 98% control from the aerial application of insecticide for the Zika infected mosquitoes, versus maybe 5% control from ground applications. Those are facts the media had from the Ag Dept people monitoring the results. We are such a small industry in this country that any negative type media affects us all as crop dusters. Let’s all keep doing our part. Thanks for your assistance in this, Bill. Have a good summer. Tim (Toby) McPherson Tall Towers Aviation Page, ND Morning Toby Thanks for the update. article I heard there was an article about my father in your magazine. I’ve looked and can’t find it. Can you help me out? I love reading anything about him. His name was JK West and his business was R&W Air Ag in Angleton Texas. The business closed in the mid 80s and he died in 1989. A local crop duster told my daughter there was something about him in this month’s issue, but I didn’t find anything. Thank you Tracy West Hello Tracy; Here is a link to the last two issues. Each month AgAir Update publishes a column from 20 years ago and it may have been there. I tried to do a word search in our digital editions, but “West” and “Texas” are so common a lot of hits came up. I didn’t see anything under Angleton, but it may not have been mentioned. If you don’t find it on these links let me know and I can send you some older ones. —Bill The second link was it. My dad and my uncle Earl West were mentioned in the Low and Slow article, “The Move Westward”. My dad and uncle learned to fly at M&M when my grandfather flew for the Mitchells. They both ended up flying for M&M with my dad opening the Angleton branch, which he later bought and renamed R&W. I remember the Mitchells and Kinky Shane very well and enjoyed the article greatly; the good old days of ag aviation. Thank you for your help. —Tracy West

EMB203 evaluation flight by Bill Lavender I have lost count of how many different ag aircraft that I have had the pleasure to conduct evaluation flights in over the years. It makes for some very interesting reading in my logbooks. Last year, I was invited by Embraer to make an evaluation flight of its production version Ipanema EMB203. Of course, I was delighted to oblige and in fact made the flight earlier this year. I was not disappointed. After jumping through a series of “hoops”, ANAC (Brazil’s FAA) finally gave me permission to fly the aircraft under my U.S. Commercial Pilot’s license. That in itself was an interesting feat made possible by the good people at
Ipanema Chief Pilot Maurício Leite and author. Note the more aerodynamic cowling with an NACA air inlet (low drag). Optional application equipment includes the choice of a Travicar or a Zannoni spray system, Transland spreader and a multi-color paint scheme using the same graphical design.
Embraer. The flight was scheduled to be at the Ipanema factory on the municipal Botucatu Brazil airport. Everyone knows Embraer is a world leading business jet manufacturer. The company also produces the Ipanema ag-plane with a history stretching over 46 years with more than 1,360 units sold and over 1,200 airworthy aircraft registered. The Ipanema models started with the EMB200 in 1970, followed by the EMB201 in 1974, then came the EMB202 in 1992. The EMB202 was falling short of customers’ expectations and Embraer realized this needed to be addressed.
Over a period of several years, Embraer conducted a market study to determine exactly what should to be done to meet customers’ needs. They found there were six major concerns from Brazilian ag-pilots; performance (28%), capacity (24%), financial/operational benefits (24%), safety (14%), support (7%) and comfort (3%). The project focused on attending to 70% of their customers’ needs. Furthermore, Embraer identified its marketplace as the small Brazilian ag-aviation operator and farmer. They did not see any other agaircraft manufacturer that could meet this need.
A group gathers around as the author is being checked out in the Ipanema EMB203 by (L) Lúcio Spinelli, Embraer engineer and (R) Ipanema Chief Pilot Maurício Leite.

From the data gathered, Embraer claims an increase of 30% in the productivity of the Ipanema EMB203 using a wider wingspan and a five mph airspeed increase, along with increasing the certified gross weight by 100 kg. How was this done using the same engine as the EMB202? Not only was the wingspan increased by 2.3 meters (7.5 feet) from 11.07 (36.3 feet) to 13.3 meters (43.6 feet), but the wing dihedral was decreased from 7° to 5°. The angle of incidence in flight was decreased. Newly designed, smaller winglets replaced the older version. The trailing edge aileron and elevator spoilers were removed, increasing the roll rate of the aircraft and reducing drag. The vertical stabilizer was given a 31% increase in area, providing more directional control and less effort with an increase in the size of the rudder horn. The winddriven air-conditioner was removed and replaced with an engine-driven unit; that alone lowered drag by 10%. Although the same engine was used as in the EMB202, the Lycoming IO-540, its horsepower rating was increased from 300 bhp to 320 bhp by burning ethanol instead of av-gas. All EMB203s are ethanol powered. The first engine start of the day is made using av-gas from a small independent airframe fuel tank of 10 liters (2.64 gallons) and once started the engine is switched to ethanol. Fuel consumption is approximately 100 l/hr (26 gph).
Embraer identified drag that could be eliminated while maintaining an ag-plane with adequate lift. Embraer has done what I’ve always said should be considered when designing an ag-aircraft and that is to focus on the aircraft’s aerodynamics. It is relatively easy to increase horsepower to offset drag, but more challenging to reduce drag aerodynamically. Sometimes drag is a component of extra lift that is needed in all ag-planes. However, Embraer

was somewhat higher. I was told that the tubing had been reinforced improving cockpit safety.
Now, it was time to find out if all the claims about the EMB203 were true. It was an overcast, but warm day with a little rain falling. It had been raining before the morning of the scheduled flight and continued to rain afterwards. I was very fortunate to have a small time window to conduct the flight in legal VFR conditions from the Botucatu airport.
Lúcio Spinelli, an Embraer engineer, demonstrated to me how to start the aircraft in the av-gas mode, then switch it to ethanol with a fuel control lever in the cockpit. It is a simple procedure, but I envision the possibility of a pilot forgetting to switch to ethanol and having a fuel exhaustion problem later.
After staring in awe at the beautiful paint scheme of the EMB203, I climbed into the cockpit for my pre-flight briefing by Embraer’s Lúcio Spinelli and Chief Pilot Maurício Leite. One of the first things I noticed was the much improved ergonomics of the cockpit. The perforated leather seat was far more comfortable than the seat of Alan Poulson’s EMB202 that I flew several years ago (without ANAC approval). I appreciated the safety of the seat belt air bags. Instead of the 110° angle of the EMB202 rudder pedals, the EMB203’s are positioned forward 14° more, providing a better angle for my feet. Once seated, I looked over the instrument panel. It was very neatly organized, everything within arm’s reach, all the important items directly in my line of sight creating a spacious feeling. Looking up, I could tell the turnover structure
The EMB203’s 264-liter (70-gallon) fuel tanks were full and the 1050-liter (277-gallon) hopper was pre-loaded to about 700 liters (185 gallons). Normally, my first flight in an evaluation aircraft is with an empty hopper. However, Embraer wanted the first flight with a partial load due to weather limiting my time to fly to one flight. Honestly, upon takeoff the aircraft may as well have been empty; it flew as if so. I had no way of measuring the takeoff distance, but my best estimate was approximately 250 meters (about 800 feet). There was little or no wind assist with the takeoff. Climbing to approximately 100 meters (300 feet), I made several wing over maneuvers, increasing the bank with each maneuver from 45° to finally 90°. I did not stall the aircraft because I find it more informative to bring the aircraft to

25” manifold pressure and 2,500 rpm for the 2.18-meter (86 inches) propeller. Most of my turns were in the 30-second range, some less. I don’t advocate hammerhead turns, but do perform wing overs for clean up passes on field ends when the aircraft is light. The EMB203 is far more nimble than my memories of flying the EMB202.
The cockpit instrument panel is neatly arranged giving a feeling of more space with all instruments in line of sight and easily assessable. The panel includes an optional G-meter (the a/c is limited to -2 to +6 Gs), MPV T50 engine monitor, communications radio, transponder and Ag-Nav or Satloc GPS navigation units. Overall, the cockpit has improved ergonomics that includes a perforated adjustable seat, as well as moving closing points on cabin doors. In the past, the cockpit door had two interior handles with one that would hit the pilot’s helmet in bumpy conditions. Now, doors have only one interior handle each that is positioned lower on the door.
As with the takeoff, the landing with an empty hopper was a non-event using about 200 meters (700 feet) of runway; less with more practice. I made three, just to prove the first one was not luck! All Ipanemas are relatively easy to land. However, the larger vertical stabilizer with its increased rudder horn, makes the EMB203 even easier to land and maintain directional control. Like with horsepower, you never have too much rudder (usually). The design and support teams at Embraer have done a fantastic job with their Ipanema EMB203 project that is now a complete, certified ag-aircraft. Although, it is only certified in Brazil. By looking for ways to improve a tested and proven airframe through aerodynamics, the EMB203 offers Brazilian agoperators the ultimate ag-plane with the lowest operating costs in its class, a significant increase in productivity and superior comfort for the pilot.
the verge of a stall and see if I receive adequate warning signs of an impending stall. I don’t know of any ag-pilot that stalls his aircraft intentionally. Identification is the key. The EMB203 is a very gentle stick shaker, completely stable. The aircraft handled beautifully with very light rudder input. Also notable was the reduced amount of aileron travel needed to bank the EMB203; control stick movement was minimal. I can understand how this will reduce pilot fatigue; a combination of less leg and arm movement. Satisfied with the handling of the EMB203, I descended to a few meters above the runway to make spray passes. During my first couple of spray passes, I porpoised the aircraft. That is an indication to how light the EMB203 is on the controls. It only took about three passes to get the feel and make spray pass entries smoothly. I noted the airspeed was 120-125 mph using

Our route took us down the Gulf Coast of Mexico and through a mountain pass from Veracruz to Itzepec before keeping the Pacific Ocean on our right wingtip for the rest of the flight. The first day we arrived at Tapachula, Mexico, which was a little more than the halfway point of our journey and just under six hours of flight time. We spent the rest of the day exploring the region, headed to the coast to relax and enjoy a full dinner spread of delicious fresh seafood. The next morning, we threw our bags back in the aircraft and had the engine spinning at sunrise for the second leg of our trip. We departed to the south and followed the coastline for the remainder of the flight until we had to turn east over land toward San Jose, Costa Rica. The scenery during the flight was gorgeous, even someone who didn’t grow up on the coastal plains would have to agree with that. The highlight of the flight, for me at least, occurred as we
flew down the coast of Guatemala. The mountain range through southern Mexico and Central America consists of many active volcanoes. Volcan de Fuego decided to release an ash plume as we passed by directly off our left wingtip. While it posed no immediate danger, it was still an impressive sight! As we continued southbound, Mr. Kornegay reveled me in stories of working in the area at the beginning of his career, mainly in Nicaragua. At my age, I would be hard pressed to turn down a job that involved huge cotton fields at the base of a dormant volcano with turns being made over the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Fonseca. The rest of the flight was quite uneventful with the exception of some strong wind gusts as we were descending into the city.

by L. B. Davis Davis Ag Consultants What is a temperature inversion, and how does it affect drift? There are many misconceptions and erroneous opinions. Without an inversion, or under normal conditions, the temperature is highest near the ground and decreases as the elevation or altitude increases. With a temperature inversion, a warm layer of air is formed at some height above cooler temperatures, thus an inversion layer. This may occur at different altitudes from near the ground to 300 feet above, or maybe more. Under normal conditions, without a temperature inversion, convection currents disperse the smaller spray particles into the upper atmosphere. If they ever come down, they are so diluted that they have no effect. Under inversion conditions, these smaller droplets are held under the inversion layer and move greater distances than would otherwise occur. In either case, larger droplets fall faster and are deposited closer to the spray release.
Smaller droplets travel farther creating a drift pattern. A temperature inversion’s height has an effect on the drift problem. The spray material does not rise up, but instead moves over and comes down again. It keeps drifting with the wind or air movement until dissipated. Droplets do not go through the inversion layer. With or without an inversion, larger droplets fall first and smaller droplets travel further, according to the laws of physics. We can’t change the laws of physics, but need to understand and work with them. A temperature inversion simply extends the drift pattern. Please resurrect and use the research done by or supported by the National Agricultural Aviation Association a few years back. One of the things this study showed was that, if a material drifted over a certain distance, a temperature inversion existed at the time and the height of spray release made no difference. A misconception is there are no temperature inversions with wind. Temperature inversions can occur at velocities much

greater than when we would normally spray. Once, when I was investigating a claim, the pilot told me, “I know temperature inversions and I did not have one. I had a steady wind of five miles per hour, no inversion. He was wrong. I worked for the State Plant Board of Mississippi from 1955 until about 1965 and was stationed in the Mississippi Delta. Back then, rice growers sprayed amine 2,4-D on rice fields with sprayers mounted on tractors. One of my duties was to trace 2,4D drift from rice to other crops, primarily cotton. My duty was to find out where a drift came from and where it went. This is where I learned the trade of tracing drift and the effects on nontarget crops. The State Plant Board had an office in the Delta Branch Experiment Station office building and I had access to the experts there.
Another misconception about temperature inversions is wind direction. As aerial application came into use, I would look for tractor tracks in rice fields to determine if the application was made by ground or air. At the time, a pilot could buy a used J-3 Cub for about $500.00, attach a wind driven spray pump to the landing gear and booms
to the wings, place a 55-gallon drum in the back seat and he was in the spray business. Flying at 60 miles per hour with the nozzles pointed straight back, this made a great 2,4-D airplane. There was one occasion when I traced 2,4-D drift for as far as six miles, then lost the pattern in another drift pattern coming from a different rice field. There were tractor tracks in the rice fields, so 2,4-D was not applied by aircraft. Spray materials will drift from ground applications as well as air. A couple of years ago I investigated a case where glyphosate was applied to Roundup-ready cotton by ground with a hooded sprayer. The drift killed milo for nearly a mile, then damaged rice for another 1.5 miles. Another misconception about temperature inversions is wind direction, which can vary greatly within short distances. Pilots should not rely on wind conditions at the home base when spraying three or four miles away. Once I was traveling west from Indianola, Mississippi on US Highway 82. There was smoke from a cotton gin blowing directly north across the highway. A little further west, smoke from another cotton gin was coming straight south across the highway. A little further west there was a large log pile burning, with the smoke going directly west. All of this was within a three to four-mile radius. Before we had stringent EPA regulations, operators in the Mississippi Delta would burn a used rubber tire at the application site. The pilot could observe the wind direction continuously during the application. However,

winds can change drastically during an application.creativepro.com Also, a very hot fire may burn through a low temperature inversion layer making the smoke column inaccurate. Once droplets leave the nozzle, the applicator has absolutely no control of where they go. Their destination is completely dependent on the laws of physics and gravity. That is why it is imperative to observe all environmental conditions and use this information. I witnessed firsthand a good example of the effect of a temperature inversion when I worked for the Delta Branch Experiment Station. The station owned an ag aircraft and hired a pilot for it. This was before GPS, so the application had to be flagged manually. One morning our flag man did not show up and I had to flag the airplane. As the aircraft was headed toward me, I noticed the spray from it was not reaching the cotton. It would come to about three feet above the cotton, then rise up. A temperature inversion had formed three feet above the cotton and would not let the application reach the cotton. I flagged off the pilot and we waited a couple of hours before going back to work. Then, everything worked well. Above all else, use common sense. If you think the job is risky for a temperature inversion at the time, put it off, or let your competitor get in trouble.

truth in flight
Autonomy. One word, two meanings Recently, a major aviation disaster shocked my home country of Brazil and the rest of the world. The crash of the chartered flight with the Chapecoense soccer team on board has brought to the forefront numerous discussions about autonomy, flight plans and other aviationrelated topics we have been discussing, in some form or another, since we began our studies as Private Pilots.

In fact, autonomy is a double-edged sword, since the greater the power of decision, the greater the responsibility. Often, we do not use a weight and balance sheet for each flight; we do not have someone who signs our flight plan and shares with us the burden of responsibility for all these decisions, or other safety procedures that the airlines use routinely.

• Reduced Turning Time
Vortex Generator Technology
Bringing these issues to the agricultural aviation universe and making a mea culpa, we can recognize that we often take too many risks and count on luck. The temptation is even stronger when one is responsible for determining the amount of fuel, analyzing the weather and giving the last word in the final decision to fly or not to fly, as it is in ag-aviation.

Agricultural planes usually do not have the ability to cross great distances easily, as our goal is to perform the best service in the shortest time possible. But, there is the issue of ferrying to remote job locations across country. Myself, I have to cover about 2,000 kilometers at the beginning and end of the season. There is no secret or magic formula to remain safe. The rule is planning strategic points to refuel, alternative tracks in navigation and knowledge of meteorology. Did you check the time? How long has this leg been? I look for possible alternate airports and establish a firm no-go point, based on the amount of fuel remaining, or how much time I have to try to circumvent the upcoming weather. After this time, and if I find I may have calculated wrong, I fly to the

alternate destination. It seems all very logical and obvious, but in the eagerness to reach the destination many times we feel compelled to continue until we are faced with the terrible vision of IFR clouds, rain or fog and no sign of blue sky above or soil below. Many who found themselves in this scenario never arrived; not sooner or later... In day-to-day aerial applications, we are often tempted to reduce the amount of fuel to keep our time on the ground as brief as possible and/or to improve performance. Let’s not be hypocritical. In agricultural aviation money is made by filling the hopper and making the application as soon as possible. We want to make the most of what the machine has to offer. This reminds me of the maxim: “Ambition is not a sin, but greed is.” Particularly when I start my work day, I have three things in mind: flight safety, application quality and income. Exactly in that order! Luckily, ever since I started my career in agricultural aviation, when I questioned my boss about expected productivity, I was told “do not worry about it now, productivity comes with time.” Today I understand what he meant. In fact, it’s no use hustling for the best time if you’re letting go of your safety margin or making an unsuitable application. Flying on the razor’s edge, or counting on luck, is unacceptable. This is especially true for us, who already have so many risks inherent to the activity. During this season in Brazil, we have already lost some pilots. This gives us the feeling that cropdusting is like a war: we know when it begins, but do not know when it ends. And as determined soldiers, we try to survive amid the casualties of those who don’t. Our enemy is neither time nor gravity, but rather haste, poor maintenance, recklessness, sometimes bureaucracies. If any situation leads you to demand more than your plane can give you, be aware and escape from this trap, because sooner or later the inevitable will happen. Juliana Torchetti. “Courage, daring and tenacity.”

The thrust evolution of the FU-24 by Mike Feeney The energy level of the basic FU-24 airframe has been transformed with respect to its overall performance, as compared to the early 225 and 240 bhp models which we flew during 1955 to mid-1960s. The static thrust produced by the 240 bhp Continental O-470 with its two-blade Hartzell propellor was about 950 pounds at sea-level. When that feeble engine was replaced by the Continental IO520 with 300 bhp, the static thrust increased to around 1,200 pounds. This increased the maximum level airspeed by only three or four knots. But, what the 300 bhp did do was improve the rate-of-climb to a safer figure as the empty weight did not increase very much. A big change was made when the Lycoming IO-720 with 400 bph was fitted. This 8-cylinder engine with its three-blade propeller is much heavier and needed stronger engine mounts other
changes. From memory, I think the 300 bhp model FU-24’s empty weight rose from about 2,250 pounds to perhaps 2,700 pounds with the IO-720 installed. Fuel consumption increased by 25%, along with the amount of fuel also increased. So, while

the bhp increased by 25%, much of that benefit was lost. Also, the “400” takes a lot more distance to stop on level and wet airstrips; particularly when landing with a tailwind. The static thrust of the 400 bhp model is pretty close to 1,600 pounds. The FU-24 converted to a 550 shp Walter or similar powered PT-6 has a very efficient propellor and its static thrust is up to about 2,200 pounds. That is a huge amount more than the thrust we first had available with the meek 225 bhp version. In the early years, we flew the FU-24-240 at about 4,000 pounds. Then, with the FU-24-300 that weight was increased to around 4,400 pounds. With the FU-24-400, we could carry about 5,400 pounds. Goodness only knows what payloads are being carried in the 550 shp models… Mike Feeney of Hamilton, New Zealand is a retired professional pilot and a long-time aviation journalist, technical and air safety writer. mikefeeney@actrix.co.nz

GE Aviation to certify new aerobatic turboprop H Series engine Type certification request submitted for GE’s first aerobatic turboprop engine GE Aviation has submitted a type certification request to the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for GE’s first aerobatic turboprop engine. The new H Series Aerobatic engine model will feature the first Electronic Engine and Propeller Control system (EEPC) in its class. EEPC will significantly reduce pilot workload and provide automatic limiting functions. With certification expected in 2018, the H Series Aerobatic engine is tailored for leisure and training for light aircraft in the 550-850 SHP range. “We continue to invest in the H Series product line, as well as the turboprop
market, to develop innovative solutions for our customers,” said Norman Baker, President & Managing Executive of GE’s Business & General Aviation Turboprops. “We are pleased to introduce a new H Series product line extension, an aerobatic engine. It will be best-in-class in terms of performance and technology to meet the rugged demands of the high-performance turboprop market.”
The GE H Series engine with the EEPC system received its type certification from EASA last December, followed by its Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) type certificate in March. The EEPCequipped H Series has already been selected for four aircraft applications. The H Series turboprop family incorporates GE’s 3-D aerodynamic design techniques and advanced materials to create a powerful, fuelefficient, durable engine. Adding more value, there are no recurrent fuel nozzle inspections or intermediate hot section inspection required. The H Series turboprop serves a multitude of uses: agricultural, business turboprops, commuter and utility aircraft.
The GE H Series Aerobatic engine features outstanding operability and maneuver duration. It will be the first certified aerobatic engine featuring the EEPC system in its power category. EEPC technology enables control of both the engine and propeller operation with a single lever. It is a true game changer in the aerobatic turboprop market.

AT-602: Trim your overhead. You’ll reduce costs and increase profit margins when you scale a multi-plane operation down to a single-plane operation. Air Tractor’s AT-602 makes it an easy choice. The big 630-gallon payload moves you up to high volume production, reduces loads, saves time and helps trim operating expenses compared with two smaller planes. The AT-602 is the ideal solution for 5-gallon work on center-pivot circles. Step it up with an AT-602. Visit your Air Tractor dealer.
