First impressions We’ve all heard, “first impressions are lasting ones.” Not much could be more true, especially when it pertains to a customer evaluating a business. It may not be fair, but research proves it to be true. I can see how this idiom applies to agaviation companies. Ag-aviation businesses’ workplaces can be inherently “dirty”, unless extra effort is made to be otherwise. When I travel to visit a flying service, or a vendor for the industry, I am exposed to the “first impression” phenomenon. If it is negative, I try my best to find some good, but I am already predisposed and sometimes it becomes difficult. This is no different than when a potential customer first arrives at an ag-aviation business, or meets the owner at some other location, even socially. A first impression is formed within minutes. If it is negative, the chances of earning that potential customer’s business are significantly reduced. The amount of effort required to eventually gain this customer is far greater than the effort required to make that great first impression. You say, “I have all the customers that I can handle. I’m not looking for a new one”. Well, that statement in itself would an erroneous way of thinking; don’t forget about attrition. It would be rare to keep the same customer base and never need to replace a customer. But, even if it were true, the “first impression…”

idiom can come into play simply between spray seasons; the last time the customer was there during the summer of last year and returns to line-up work this spring. Let me define “first impressions”. To me, it is the appearance of the physical components of the company (aircraft, trucks, buildings, office), its employees, the owner and the manner in which visible business is handled, as well as attitudes. Is there a protocol of procedures, an SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) that demonstrates professionalism to the customer? Note that I stated first impressions being “appearances”. Yes, for the most part first impressions are visual, however it can also include how an initial telephone conversation, email or text is conducted. I don’t have to go into detail. You know the office area should be clean, efficient, with an inviting entrance way and an organized arrangement of equipment. Employees should look like employees of a professional company. Yes, this even means name branding clothing, a small price to pay for an impact that advertises your company everywhere your employee goes. It should go without saying, regular employee meetings can remind all they are the “face” of the company and should always act that way, on and off the payroll. A variation of first impressions are lasting ones is, “You never have the chance to make a first impression again.” In the truest sense,
maybe. However, I believe it is never too late to improve a company’s image and first impression actions are the good way to do that. In thinking about first impressions, let us not forget about the first impression you could have made six months ago without ever coming into contact with your potential customer...social media. What kind of first impression did a post, tweet or photo/ video that you made in the past make? In today’s hyper-connected world, this is vitally important. Be careful. Let me leave you with one simple statement that I’ve found to hold true in most circumstances, “If someone does not care enough about their own equipment, employees and related businesses, then why would they care about mine?” That is a profound statement. To drive it home, if you were to take your aircraft engine to a shop and everywhere you looked were parts and tools scattered in mayhem, how would you feel about leaving your expensive lifeline with that shop? I, like many our age in this business, are thinking of retirement, the grey hair and stress of starting out new pilots again is not something I wish to repeat. I truly am looking forward to closing this chapter of a very old, weather worn book and open a brand new one! 502XP proves itself in an award winning operation by Graham Lavender
Ag-Cats have been a mainstay in southwest Louisiana and northern California for many, many years. Short ferries, smaller fields and aircraft familiarity have kept this iconic airframe in service in these parts of the country. The Ag-Cat fleet now is mostly powered by turbine engines, with a few radial machines populating various nooks throughout the landscape. Until 2011, even more rare than the occasional radial-powered Ag-Cat was an operator utilizing multiple radial aircraft. O’Brien Flying Service in Iowa, Louisiana was doing just that. But, times and technology evolved. The availability of parts and the cost of petroleum products to keep a fleet of five geared R-1340 powered Super B Ag-Cats in the air to sow and treat vast acres of rice was becoming an obstacle that even the 45-plus-year-old operation was finding cantankerous. A slow transition from R-1340s to Super 6 TPE331 Garrett engines was moving the flying service into the turbine world. Then, with no rebuildable airframes on the horizon, or nearlynew Super Bs for sale, a 502XP demonstration in November of 2016 paved the way for O’Brien Flying Service to transition into the Air Tractor 502XP. Fivemonths later, in April 2017, the company bought a second one. O’Brien Flying Service was started by Zoren O’Brien in 1972. Zoren, now retired, was a pillar in the agricultural aviation community for many years. Past President of the National Agricultural Aviation Association in 1995, Zoren received numerous awards for his service to the industry. He was bestowed a Falcon Club pin in 1993, received the Outstanding Service Award in 1995 after his tenure as president and, in 2004, Zoren received the coveted Agrinaut Award.

Zoren O’Brien began his flying career in Texas, Mississippi and southern Louisiana flying for AT Morgan in 1964. Eventually, local Iowa, Louisiana farmers wanted a more full-time aerial application operation than what was currently available, prompting Zoren to begin his operation with two 1973 600 HP Ag-Cast. Over the next few years, many aircraft were added to the fleet. In the late 1970s, O’Brien Flying Service was operating 13 Ag-Cats.
eight aircraft operation, all B-Model Ag-Cats. In 2006, the fleet was upgraded to geared R-1340 Super Bs and reduced to six.
For a short time in the 1970s, O’Brien Flying Service was replacing its Ag-Cats with Emairs (a highly modified bi-plane based on the Stearman) and even at one point became a dealer. However, the reliability of the Emair airframe and its 1200 HP R-1820 engine was suspect and Zoren returned to operating AgCats, upgrading aircraft he reacquired from 450 HP to 600 HP B-models. Over the next two decades, O’Brien Flying Service was an
By this point Zoren’s son, Dwayne, was a mainstay in the operation and had been for many years. Dwayne was raised in agricultural aviation, learning to fly at his father’s flying service by the hand of Roy “Pappy” Crandall, a pilot in World War II and also for O’Brien Flying Service.
Around 2011, as the R-1340s became more burdensome to maintain and the flying service started seeing less engine time between overhauls, the radial engines were replaced with Super 6 Garretts and airframes were converted to 500 gallon Hershey Fat Cats.
Dwayne graduated from college and went straight into the military to fly helicopters.
Since 2004, O’Brien Flying Service is under the command of Dwayne. Pilots Charlie Bourne and Gregg Watts fly the 502XPs. Shane Hudson flys one of the two remaining Ag-Cats with Dwayne flying backup. Ashley Cooper handles day to day office tasks, along with Wendi Iguess and Nikki Duplichain. Greg Lyon is the operation’s lead IA/A&P with Harlon Wilson and Leon Watson around to help with everything else. In 2003, Dwayne received the Larson-Miller Service Award from the NAAA. Continuing with an award winning operation’s tradition, Charlie Bourne and Gregg Watts were the recipients of the 2017 Larson-Miller Community Service award.

He served in many locations overseas initially flying the AH1F Cobra and later the AH64A Apache. Dwayne retired as a Special Operations helicopter pilot, flying the Boeing AH-6J. His career in the military spanned from active duty to reserves, then back to active duty (post 9/11). After serving in the Gulf War and Somalia, Dwayne went Special Operations reserve status. On 9/11, Dwayne had just finished spraying soybeans when he was notified and then activated two weeks later. He was deployed to the Middle East region for the next two years and nine months. He retired on December 7, 2012
According to Dwayne, “After completing their morning spray work, Charlie and Gregg headed to town to get some snacks. They noticed a cloud of heavy black smoke just south of town, near Charlie’s home. They decided to take a detour. As they approached the smoke, they discovered it was coming from a fire that had engulfed a multi-level apartment complex. It was getting out of control. The local fire trucks were not able to contain a fire of that height so Charlie and Gregg approached the fire chief and mayor to volunteer their aerial capabilities. The mayor of Iowa credited the two pilots, saying the planes prevented the fire from spreading to other structures in the city. What seemed like just another day at the office for Charlie and Gregg turned out to be a day of heroic service.” After gaining approval, Charlie and Gregg headed back to the airport to load water into their planes. Both pilots flew over the apartment complex and dropped water on top of the building, where the firefighters’ hoses were not able to reach the flames. Due to the pilots’ quick thinking and desire to help their community, they were able to keep the fire from spreading to the adjacent apartment complex, neighboring lumber yard and paint store. O’Brien Flying Service’s custom loading trucks, capable of approximately four loads of liquid product as well as supporting dry work utilizing the boom.
Steve Matte, Jeff Parkins, Corey Northrup, Bruce Woodward and Steven Farque run the ground operations for the aircraft, utilizing O’Brien Flying Service’s custom-built loader trucks. The truck design has evolved over the years to handle about four loads of liquid, as well as a boom for dry applications.
O’Brien Flying Service’s season is in full swing from April through the end of June. However, the company’s location is fortunate enough to have work year-round. 80% of the crops treated are rice, which sometimes can be flown up to nine times, including the initial sowing by air.
Dwayne had varying modifications installed on the new 502XPs. The StormShield windscreen by Storm Aeronautics was the first item due to numerous ducks in the rice fields. After making dry calibrations during Operation SAFE clinics, he installed quick releases for the inboard boom hangars, which enhanced his pattern.
Dwayne has commented the move to turbine 502XPs has been a positive one for the flying service. Over 40 years of operating a single type airframe makes the transition an interesting one, but such that O’Brien Flying Service has the third 502XP on the way.

Them old bones For years now, I’ve heard about our aging cadre of crop duster pilots. I never really gave it much thought until I saw my grandfather staring back at me in the mirror. He was an old man. Much older than I am. Or was he? I guess I could ask my grandson, but you can’t trust anything kids say anyway. I saw a study not long ago saying the average age of an American ag pilot is fifty-seven. If that was a year ago does that mean the average age is now fifty-eight? I don’t know. Aches and pains become a way of life as we get ‘more experienced’. Friends are getting joint replacement surgeries, false teeth and thicker eye glasses. I guess that’s really not my business except I’m just about the same age
and condition as the rest of them. Sometimes my spine sounds like a kid twisting a wad of bubble wrap. There comes a time when all those old guys who told us not to do the things we were doing in the manner in which we were doing them are proven right. Jumping fences and wrestling bears, using our muscles and bones instead of our brains. Wisdom is born of experience. However, experience is often born of foolishness. Ag flying is more physical work than the average flying job. There is a certain measure of athleticism required. I’m not sure any of us consider it. You never really know how
much you use your shoulders, elbows, knees and hips until they start to hurt. Then, all those delicate, bio-mechanical gadgets sound off loud and clear! The trim knob takes on a new importance and a guy finally appreciates a good load of grease in all the fittings and flight controls. Several years ago, I was in the Midwest slathering fungicide from horizon to horizon. One day, my left elbow swelled up like a pregnant cat and hurt like I never knew an elbow could hurt. I couldn’t quite figure it out. Then I realized how many times I cycled the spray handle with it during an average day. Math never has been my strong point, but I figured my poor old left elbow was

shouldering a very large share of the total workload. An ice pack and more ibuprofen than I should have taken carried my aching elbow through the remainder of the season. Thankfully, it was only about week longer. A long week for a sore elbow. I have become a big fan of the hydraulic pump system since then. I also have found a greater appreciation for smooth runways. Taking off and landing on a washboard of a runway is not good for the airplane or the pilot. It just doesn’t make sense to have to use a runway not fit to be a dirt road. I’ve recently come to the conclusion; anything that saves a little wear and tear on what is already worn and torn, is a good thing. We can never estimate another’s pain, but we sure know when we hurt! Chronic pain increases fatigue and adds a distraction impossible to ignore. It will take you from being a professional aviator to being the subject of the Spanish inquisition. Nobody likes to be the guy who says he can’t do it. Often times, it comes down to a matter of either maintaining the mobility you have or exasperating the problem. There are times when discretion is the better part valor and it might be best to regroup and survive to fight another day. Pride is a bitter drink. Too many of us wait too long to do anything about an issue we might be having. We use temporary measures to alleviate the symptoms. Meanwhile, back at the ranch... those bones are still rubbing against

each other, those little cellophane like layers of whatever it is are wearing through and the nerves are getting scarred up. The whole process leads to other problems and sooner or later we will find ourselves flat on our backs in a hospital bed. While everyone else is out flying, we’re getting instructions on how to care for our stitches. They make all kinds of pills to help with pain. Doctors love to prescribe medicines with big, fancy Latin sounding names. The FAA has a list of those medicines they feel are not conducive to the safe operation of a flying machine. Whether they are or aren’t, they can suspend your license with the stroke of a keyboard button. So what’s a guy to do? I wish I knew. If your regular doctor is also your AME, he or she should know what is, or isn’t allowed. If not, you’re wise to check with your AME before your doctor prescribes anything new. Please understand here, I am not attempting to give medical or legal advice. Just sharing some things I’ve learned and experienced. In the meantime, research ‘best practice’ examples to help overcome the issue. Sometimes, just changing the way you do something might help. Put an ice pack on your shoulder (or whatever hurts) while you’re watching the evening news. Invest in a good seat cushion (best money I ever spent). Make sure your helmet is adjusted right. Get out of the cockpit at regular intervals and walk around, (I know that’s a tough one). Make sure your money handle operates smoothly, controls are as light as you can get them and stave off the ‘G’ forces. Most of all, and this is the most difficult, admit to yourself that it’s time to think before you jump a fence and maybe the bear ought to be left alone. Fly well and stay Safe!

Aerial application droplet release height by Dennis R Gardisser, WRK of Arkansas LLC
WRK of Arkansas LLC is very busy this time of year conducting Operation S.A.F.E. Clinics across the United States. One of the measurements taken at these clinics is application height. Analysis of these results is contrary to the requests made by customers and beliefs of many applicators. That is, lower is always better. I hear many operators say they are asked to have the wheels on the crops. Long story, short – pattern uniformity suffers and drift potential increases when applications are made very low. When aircraft are flown very low, in strong ground effect, there are stronger vortices developed at the wing tips. The rotational field around the fuselage, caused from the prop torque, also distorts the pattern uniformity when aircraft are flown low.
speed and height had the lowest potential drift values and they were infinitesimally small. The amount of material collected from the high and fast was about 10% higher and the low and slow was 300% higher than the medium. This is only one study. Hundreds of evaluations at clinics indicate that the optimum particle release height for fixed wing aircraft above ground or closed canopy should be approximately 25% of the wingspan. This phenomenon is also more pronounced with the smaller droplet spectrums because it doesn’t take as much swirling air currents to change their ultimate path. In summary, lower is better, may not always be true!
A good way to demonstrate this effect to growers, or to ones self, is to fly low over a dry, dusty area and visualize the rotational effects of the dust picked up from the ground. The heavier and slower aircraft will produce aerodynamic flow fields that have the greatest impact. WRK conducted a comparison a few years ago with an AT502 with three different scenarios: 125-130 mph & low as safe, 145 mph with 12 ft release height, and 155 mph and 16 ft release height. A 50ft drift tower positioned 300 ft downwind was utilized to collect any potential particle movement with an average wind speed of 8 mph. The medium

New Zealand test pilot Bernie Lewis’s comments on ag-aircraft wing overs In 1980 I did the spinning trials on the New Zealand-built Cresco ag-aircraft in order to approve it for its Certificate of Airworthiness. I was told that the earlier Fletcher version would not spin and I was led to believe that the Cresco would not spin either. I estimated there could be about 200+ types of entry for a spin, with power off/on, CG changes, various flap positions, etc. So, I worked my way through all of them ticking each off one by one. After several hours, I found that the Cresco would spin, hence the dorsal fin was added. I also had to use an anti-spin ‘chute to stop the spin, as the controls were ineffective. However, I found some entries resulted in an incipient spin, where I lost a few hundred feet while recovering. As I did all these trials at 8-10,000 ft, I had no trouble in sorting things out. Additionally, I found these events would sometimes occur when I pulled up into a wingover. I considered the following control movements accentuated an incipient spin; 1. Pulling up, increased the angle of attack. 2. Rudder input caused the opposite wing to gain
more lift and so start to roll the aircraft over. To counteract the roll, it was necessary to apply aileron to oppose the roll and that left you with your controls crossed at a high angle of attack. Occasionally, this resulted in an incipient spin, but I had plenty of height to recover. When top dressing or spraying at a low level of a 100 or so feet there is insufficient altitude to recover. The wingover maneuver looks very spectacular to onlookers, but can have even more “spectacular” and horrifyingly fatal results, especially for relatives. I have emphasised this on a number of occasions, but some pilots still ignore my observations and have paid the ultimate price. Fortunately, some operators have forbidden wingovers. I believe that the same results could occur on all ag-aircraft. To reiterate, “Don’t do wingovers at the end of a sowing or spraying run.” Bernie Lewis is a well-respected New Zealand test pilot who flew in the RAF and was trained by the United Kingdom test pilot school. —Submitted by Mike Feeney/New Zealand

Why ag-aviation accidents are happening
The main topic of focus in NAAA’s Safety & Regs committee was the 69 accidents and seven fatalities that our industry suffered in 2017, both of which are close to the 10-year average for FAA Part 137. A special committee was formed a couple years ago to study these accidents and it came up with a “Root Cause” in which some interesting stats have surfaced involving ag aviation accidents. REGARDLESS OF TOTAL AND AG TIME: • 75% involve pilots with less than 500 hours in make and model ag-aircraft. • 43% involve pilots with less than 250 hours ag time. • 50% involve pilots with less than 100 hours ag-time in the last 90 days. ANAC against ag-aviation? When the Federación Argentina de Cámaras Agroaereas (FeArCa)was created November 2, 1996, the aeronautical authority of our country was directed by a military organization, the Command of Air Regions of the Argentine Air Force. Nine years later March 15, 2007, that military structure was transformed into the National Administration of Civil Aviation (ANAC), an autarchic entity that had to be accompanied and strengthened from the beginning. Federación Argentina de Cámaras Agroaereas (FeArCa) not only saw ANAC born, but supported it from its beginnings, making true one of the commandments of the Federation that was to, “collaborate with the public and private authorities, and in particular with the ones related to agricultural activities, for the formation and execution of the initiatives for the protection, improvement and progress of the aerial activity in the country and in MERCOSUR group of countries.” In this sense, FeArCa was invited by the aeronautical authority to participate in the Advisory Council of General and Sports Aviation of the Argentine Republic that was founded June 9, 2011 by ANAC resolution Nº 479/2011 and the work commission formed July 17, 2012 by ANAC resolution Nº 467/12. The close link between FeArCa and ANAC resulted in a significant effect on Argentinian ag-aviation, since it contributed to the solution

In the context of this collaboration, in 2017 FeArCa proposed active measures to help the Argentine government in its fight against drug traffic across the northern border. In that sense, the Federation participated in many meetings with ANAC authorities, the Argentine Company of Aerial Navigation S.E (EANA), the Joint Aerospace Command of the Armed Forces (COAER), the Argentine Air Force (FAA) and the Directorate of Borders of the Ministry of Security of the Nation. In those meetings, it was agreed to install transponders on ag-aircraft to distinguish them from aircraft operated by drug traffickers which were coming from Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil. This helped the Argentine Air Force and National Gendarmerie to pawn their few resources to capture aircraft that were involved in drug trafficking. All parties recognized that the use of transponders proposed by FeArCa was the easiest and most effective way to separate registered ag-aircraft from those operated by drug traffickers.

It is appropriate to emphasize the relationship between FeArCa and ANAC were always developed in a strictly technical level, regardless of the affiliation or political views of successive national administrators. This can be confirmed by Graduate Rodolfo Gabrielli, Dr. Alejandro Granados, Engineer Juan Pedro Irigoin and all political officials that were involved with ANAC between 2007 - 2017. charge, he signed ANAC Resolution N° 25/2018 which imposed the obligation to use transponders by all ag-aircraft that perform operations outside the 29th north parallel 29th south latitude. It was the implementation of the solution proposed by FeArCa a year ago. Resolution N° 25/2018 was published in the official bulletin of the Argentina Republic January 16, 2018 making the installation of transponders mandatory February 1, 2018. This was only fifteen calendar days (eleven work days) between the publication and the deadline. The compliance term was impossible taking into account the time to purchase, process importation, installation and approvement of the transponders by the same ANAC that imposed this resolution.
Resolution N° 25/2018 was published January 16, 2018 making the installation of transponders mandatory February 1, 2018. After the deadline, ANAC started to reject compliance submissions and re-submissions of all ag-aviation companies affected by the resolution. Because of this, many registered ag-operators simply could not comply and were pushed to illegality. At the same time, an entire year of effort against clandestine ag-operators was lost. The obligatory requirement of transponders also generates two additional problems. First, it allows EANA, the Joint Aerospace
Command and the Argentine Air Force to report all ag-operators in violation per the terms provided by Decree No. 2352/83 (Aeronautical Infractions Regime). Thus, ag-operators without transponders in their aircraft were clearly not complying with the regulation and in violation. Secondly, the non-compliance of the regulation leaves the operators without aircraft insurance. Aircraft insurance policies require that the damaged aircraft complied with all regulations. We are faced with a big problem that will multiply into a cascade effect as ag-operator certificates of twenty-two companies based outside the 29th north parallel 29th south latitude expire. This is not minor because it involves about 100 ag-aircraft. The Dr. Tomàs Insausti was informed of this problem at Civil Aviation Advisory Council meetings January 31, 2018 and February 8, 2018 where it was requested an immediate extension of ANAC Resolution N° 25/2018. The same has been formally requested by FeArCa in a letter sent to ANAC February 14, 2018. So far, there have been no solutions to this problem. It’s time for Dr. Insausti to take agricultural aviation seriously. Our country has the third largest ag-aircraft fleet in the world, following the United States and Brazil. But, unlike these countries, half the Argentine ag-aviation fleet is illegal. In other words, there are as many ag-operators registered with ANAC as ag-operators without registration or ag-operator certificates. The problem is huge, not only from the tax or environmental point of view, but for aviation operational safety, the risk of aircraft without proper maintenance and ag-pilots without licences. And, there is the insurance coverage issue.

ANAC needs to return to the collaboration table that characterized the relationship with FeArCa since 2007. That is the only way to consolidate a productive aviation model that advances the country. Dr. Tomás Insausti needs to understand that without ag-aviation, the agroexport model collapses, only agaircraft can seed, fertilize and fight plant pests with the effectiveness and speed that often agriculture requires. The “Aircraft Revolution”, revealed by President Mauricio Macri and Minister Guillermo Dietrich, can’t be focused only on commercial transport. “It was a victory of common sense,” declared Goiás State Representative Lissauer Vieira (PSB) of the exclusion/buffer zone relocation by a 27 to 2 vote to veto Goiás legislation, redesignating distance for exclusion zones for aerial spraying to the original limits provided in the legislation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAP). In the case of ground spraying, those buffer zones were changed to follow distances prescribed by the state forestry code. The vote took place at 4:15 pm on Wednesday (March 21) and the decision was approved by the State Department of Agriculture. This validated the department’s opinion that at the end of last year had resulted in a veto by Goiás Governor Marconi Perillo. As a result, Article 11, State Law n. 19.423 / 16 was modified, reducing the minimum distances from exclusion areas for aviation up to 2,000 meters, as established by Normative Instruction No. 02/2008 of MAP; 500 meters from towns, cities, neighborhoods, water sources for people; and 250 meters from water bodies. According to Representative Lissauer, the measure will save agriculture in Goiás from significant losses in food production, while still ensuring the security of the ecosystem and people. As the law was before, much of Goiás’s arable land could no longer be treated.

Brazil state, Goiás, rescinds new buffer zones

Nancy Snow passes: 1940-2018 Nancy Bacon Snow, age 77, of Wichita Falls passed away on Wednesday morning, March 28, 2018, in House of Hope in Wichita Falls. She spent the last hours of her life in a colorful room, decorated with her own art, and filled with the sounds of the music that she loved, surrounded by family, friends, and caregivers. A celebration of Nancy’s life will be held on her birthday, April 8, 2018 at the Wichita Falls Museum of Art from 2:00 – 4:00 pm (come and go), with a short memorial presentation at 3:15. Guests are encouraged to wear their brightest colors and join family and friends as we share memories, music, art and color of her life. Nancy Lynn Bacon was born on April 8, 1940 to the late Charles Raymond Bacon and Doris Afton Gilkerson Bacon in Lubbock, Texas. At an early age she developed a love of dance, music, and art. Nancy graduated from Texas Tech University, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art. She married Leland Snow on December 18, 1964 in Lubbock, Texas, and they made their home in Wichita Falls, where they raised two daughters, Kristin and Kara. They were married 46 years until Leland’s death on February 20, 2011.

Leland and Nancy Snow
Throughout her life, she pursued many interests including teaching and playing the guitar and singing, taking art classes at MSU, traveling, and many other creative pursuits. As a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, she had a life-long desire to study the Bible and learn God’s word. She was a member of Rephidim Church in Wichita Falls.
In lieu of flowers, Kristin and Trevor request that donations be made to Bethel Bible Church of Wichita Falls (bbcwf.org), a fledgling church of which they are members. Memorials may also be made in honor of Nancy to Hospice of Wichita Falls and House of Hope. The family wishes to express our gratitude to Nancy’s personal assistants, the caregivers of Visiting Angels, and the nurses, aides, and staff of House of Hope and Hospice of Wichita Falls for their loving care of her until her final hours.
Those that knew Nancy well would describe her as loving, genuine, and creative. But these words merely scratched the surface of her magnetic personality. From her bright, infectious smile, to the vibrant colors of her carefully crafted outfits, Nancy could light up any room with her presence. She was a brilliant artist and talented musician, but perhaps her greatest work of art was the beautiful family that she loved deeply. Survivors include two daughters, Kristin Edwards and Kara East, sonin-law Trevor Edwards, grandchildren, Brennan Edwards and Elisabeth East, all of Wichita Falls; one brother, John Bacon and wife, Patricia of Lubbock; four nephews, John Charles Bacon, Jr. and wife, Paige of Fort Worth, Texas, John Franklin Bacon of Lawrence, Kansas, Conan McCarty of New York City, and Kevin McCarty of Pomona, California. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland, brother-in-law Edward Snow, sister-in-law Marihelen Snow, nephew Kim McCarty, niece Lauren McCarty, and son-in-law, Alan East.

Here are some tips on what to look for when you are checking over your airplane this season. These tips should not take the place of doing routine maintenance. Use these tips as a means to intercept any potentially large problems. Problems found early enough usually don’t evolve into big problems.

Watch for deep nicks along the leading edge of the blade. If you have to file your prop, file along the blade not across the blade.

your engine in this condition you are asking for trouble. Contact your engineer immediately! Install a Chip Detector and pay attention to it. Spin-on oil filter kits make oil changes easier leaving you time to thoroughly inspect the filter at each change. Don’t forget to check the rear engine compartment. Look for loose wiring and oil leaks. Grab the carburetor and the mags and give them a good push and pull. Movement at the attach points calls for immediate action. Remember this engine shakes and vibrates, accessories loosen up more than you think. Is everything wire locked and secure?

Keep your engine clean! It is much easier to keep tabs on your engine if it is clean. Daily visually inspect the engine for cracks, blown exhaust gaskets, cracked exhaust etc. Assess all oil leaks that develop. Some of the leaks will not be serious but at least you know when and why they developed. Consult your engineer when it comes to leaks - keep him informed. If you find a pal or lock nut missing on your Pratt & Whitney engine, or if you find a broken stud on any cylinder base do not fly your aircraft. If one is missing, others are probably loose. If you fly

The spray system and fan assembly often receive very little attention yet they are the most susceptible to severe vibration. A spray system failure is as bad as an engine failure from a revenue generating standpoint. Constantly check your entire system and make the little repairs as problems are found. Check for loose pump mounts. Check for wore out linkages. Check for soft and deteriorating rubber coupling hoses. Have an overhaul kit on hand especially if you did not overhaul

Pawnee owners in particular, during your daily walk around closely check the three wheel bolts for missing or loose nuts. Also check the security of the wheel brake calipers. These areas commonly fail with Pawnees. Closely check your tail wheel attach springs and wheel housings. These components work very hard for your aircraft and are too easily neglected. A quick way to check whether your tail assembly is loose is to have one or two people rock the wings back and forth so that the tail wheel moves from side to side. With your fingertips feel for movement at the attach points and bolts. While down there on your knees checking the spring and housing look at the tire too! Besides examining how much tread is left squeeze the tire. If the rubber is quite soft it has soaked up a lot of oil and chemical. It may not make the season and it may blow at the most inopportune time! Your tires are reasonably worn but you want to get one more season out of them? You will need a set eventually but the worse case is needing them on a Sunday in the middle of a bug run! Buy your tires when they are readily available or get them ordered. Plan to have them in your hangar just in case they don’t make the season. Any downtime experienced should be fairly minimal.

Air Tractor recognized for ESOP communications excellence OLNEY, TX—Air Tractor was the recipient of two awards for Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) Communications Excellence during last week’s ESOP Association Southwest Chapter Spring Conference. During the 20th Annual Awards Luncheon, Air Tractor received an award for the ESOP video they produced, as well as an award for their various ESOP Special Events. The Communication Excellence Awards recognize members who show a commitment to communications that promote the benefits of ESOP. An employee stock ownership plan is a taxdeferred retirement plan, similar to a 401(k) plan, except that it is funded solely by the company, not the employees.
