Fire season off to a different start A conventional fire season would be where the majority of activity sprung up in the American Southwest. In a twisted start for the 2016 fire season, the vast majority of fires have been with our Canadian neighbors. Most news reporting has focused on the huge blaze near Fort McMurray in the northeast corner of Alberta province. This fire has prompted the evacuation of more than one-hundred thousand residents. Twenty-five thousand of them that fled to the north were evacuated a second time when the flames spread in that direction. So far, thousands of homes and businesses have been destroyed. Large fires are also out of control in British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario. Most of these blazes are in old growth timber and will only be extinguished by Mother Nature. Aerial resources are already stretched to the max and it appears it will be a long summer for our brothers and sisters to the north. A Convair 580 Heavy Air Tanker suffered a runway excursion in Northwest Alberta in early May resulting in significant damage to the aircraft. The pilot suffered a cut to his

head and the co-pilot was uninjured. It is reported that the pilot had a medical episode that forced the co-pilot to take control during the approach. At the time of the accident, there were fortynine large fires in Alberta. The Predictive Services forecast for the continental United States calls for a normal fire season with early hotspots in southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. Later in the summer, above average activity is forecast in parts of California, Nevada and southern Idaho. The current Exclusive Use Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT) contract has made it very difficult for contractors to bring new pilots into the industry. The contract states that a Level II pilot can only be on duty six days out of any 14day work period. That rule in essence requires the contractor to hire two pilots to cover one aircraft. This places an economic burden on the contractor, as well as pilots. Years ago, the practice was to pair a Level II pilot with an experienced Level I pilot for the entire season. This system worked very well and I would like to see the contract amended to address this problem. There
is currently a shortage of qualified pilots in the program. Drones have become a very important tool in fire suppression. They have been used to drop ping pong igniters for prescribed fires and burnout operations, perimeter mapping and to serve as an eye in the sky for Incident Commanders in the absence of an Air Attack aircraft. The rotorwash from a helicopter can often aggravate the fire, but it has been found that drones can be operated much lower because of reduced rotorwash. A drone is being used to find the point of origin on the Fort McMurray Fire for this very reason. The fire season will be in full swing across the Western United States in June. Even though predictions are for a normal season, there will still be millions of acres burned. Fly safe, stay focused and I hope to see you in the mountains some day.

AEROTECH by Graham Lavender The year was 1990. Ted Stallings was working his AT-400 on a Gypsy Moth contract, as he had done countless times since forming Aero Tech. Back then, grasshopper, gypsy moth, boll weevil - just about any eradication - was Aero Tech’s mainstay. Business was at an all-time high and Ted was flying lead in a two-airplane formation low in a valley. “He said my airplane starting disintegrating, right before his eyes. First a section of the tail, then wing and the next thing he knew there was a fireball on the cliff of the valley.” Ted recounted the story of the pilot who was flying behind him. By all accounts, including the photos, Ted Stallings shouldn’t have survived that horrific encounter with a transmission line; he did and rebuilt his business ten-fold. Aero Tech’s beginnings can be traced back to the 1960s, when Ted’s father, Chuck Stallings began his aerial application business by modifying a Super Cub in Bovina, Texas. Chuck Stallings was treating mainly row crops and gradually replaced the Cub with Pawnees. In his prime, Chuck Stallings was operating six Pawnees.

Ted was born into ag aviation. Flying in his very early years (11 years old to be exact), Ted sprayed his first field at 14 in a PA-11! Ted competed in the International Aerobatic Championship at 16 as a student pilot, placing 3rd in the Sportsman Category. Obviously, a natural ag aviator, Ted bought the flying service from his father in the mid-1980s and formed Ted’s Spraying Service. Ted sold the flying service and relocated to Clovis, New Mexico and formed Aero Tech in 1988, right before his accident. By this point, Ted had become very fluent in the procurement of government contracts. Enough so, that the mainstay of his business was pest eradication for the federal government. While Aero Tech was succeeding, Ted Stallings found himself with an unprecedented hill to climb. His accident brought with it a oneyear and three-month stay in the hospital. The Aero Tech business suffered during his absence, and once semi-recovered, Ted began rebuilding from the ground-up. AeroTech became a Thrush dealer and started procuring government contracts at a rapid pace. Two Thrushes turned
Cameron, Chuck and Ted Stallings. Chuck is 87 years old, and still enjoys being in the office on a daily basis.
Ted and his wife Patti, in the village of Seldovia, Alaska where Aero Tech’s Alaska base of operations exists. into four, but the fire fighting aspect of Aero Tech called for bigger aircraft with larger payloads. Aero Tech purchased its first AT-802 in 1994 and today operates seven AT-802s. The AT-802s are powered by Pratt & Whitney PT6A-67 power plants and are all single-place except for one dual-cockpit version. The AT802s utilize Satloc M3 or G4s with CP11 spray nozzles. Aero Tech has plans to add another AT-802 to its fleet in the near future.
Aero Tech’s AT-802s are deployed throughout the lower 48 states and Alaska. About five years ago, Ted and his wife Patty purchased a fishing lodge in Seldovia, Alaska. Ted had been conducting operations in the state since 1988 and felt it a natural progression to expand Aero Tech to Alaska. Incidentally, while on an Alaskan fire contract, Ted Stallings acquired the title of piloting the first AT-802 over the Arctic Circle. He says, “It was just happenstance. I was in the airplane and another AT-802 was right beside me. I was just going a little faster.” During the ongoing expansion of Aero Tech, acquiring additional government contracts required a diverse portfolio of equipment. Helicopters were added to the fleet after a Houston, Texas mosquito abatement contract and have served as an indispensable asset in Aero Tech’s work. Animal capture, eradication, aerial fire fighting and air-taxi services are just some of the capabilities of Aero Tech. Their helicopter fleet includes two Bell 212s, a Bell 407 (which is equipped for liquid applications), a Bell 412 and an MD-530, also equipped for aerial applications. Aero Tech’s Bell 412 was featured in the movie “San Andreas”, a recent Hollywood blockbuster.
In addition to a fleet of helicopters and AT-802s, the Alaska base is also home to Aero Tech’s turbine-powered amphibious DeHavilland Beaver and Pilatus Porter PC6-H4, both of which are used for personnel, cargo and air taxi operations. Just as Ted was born and raised in aerial application, Ted’s son, Cameron, continues as a third generation pilot. As Vice-President and Chief Pilot of Aero Tech, Cameron started loading airplanes and helicopters before his teen years. He soloed at 16 and obtained his private-pilot certificate at 17. He added his rotorcraft rating at 18 and obtained his commercial-pilot certificate at 19. Cameron instructed in helicopters during
his early time-building years, graduating to wildlife surveys for Aero Tech in 2008. Cameron became carded to fight fires with helicopters in 2012. Cameron has his eyes set on the future and plans to continue the tradition of expanding the business as time goes on. Aero Tech’s amazing success-at-theface-of-near-tragedy story has led the company to its present day expanse of operations. Aero Tech employs 14 people, plus eight contract fixed-wing pilots and eight helicopter pilots. The company’s state-of-the-art headquarters in Clovis, New Mexico is a testament that even in the face of adversity, setbacks are overcome and hard-work prevails.

CAL FIRE’S Ken Pimlott interview in Sacramento Interview with the State of California’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Chief Ken Pimlott, 22 March 2016, on the first day of the Aerial Fire Fighting Conference, Sacramento, CA. Andrew Drwiega: Ken, thanks for talking to us on the first day of the Aerial Fire Fighting (AFF) conference in Sacramento, California. I would like to start by getting your opinion on the most productive advances in aerial firefighting in recent years. Ken Pimlott: There are two that stand out: technological progress and the tactical use of aircraft. There has been technological change and refinement in the delivery of fire retardant. Over the last 10 years the biggest single technological change which is shaping the future of firefighting is the increasing implementation of jet aircraft into the aerial firefighting arsenal.
Pen & Ink Drawings By Richard C. DeSpain
In 2006, CAL FIRE pioneered the concept of using the DC-10 [in a demonstration then fighting fires later in the year] and was considered at the time ‘out of the box’ in terms of conventional firefighting and was met with a lot of skepticism from within the organisation and the firefighting community in general. But we had some forward thinking operations chiefs and aviators who proved it could work. Over several years they looked at delivery mechanisms as well as refining how to use it tactically. Andrew Drwiega: What is the current situation regarding the planned replacement of your 12 Huey UH-1H helicopters. I understand a re-bid will take place due to some vendor misinterpretation regarding the written requirement? Ken Pimlott: The helicopter replacement decision is public and we had three vendors who put forward a total of four bids. We have never gone to the open market for an aviation platform as we have been a huge user of the Federal Excess Property programme which covers equipment/aircraft that originally belonged to the Department of Defense [DoD]. Once acquired by the U.S. Forest Service it is loaned to State agencies for firefighting. This path has served the State of California well in the past. The UH-1s were retrofitted and rebuilt for our purposes, but we now have a responsibility to upgrade our capability. It has been an emotional decision for firefighters. When you are on the ground, the signature sound of the Huey has always been wonderful to hear. The bids that were submitted ranged between $104-160 million. We are looking for 12 aircraft eventually but the first bid is for nine helicopters. We are working closely with the State’s procurement experts and the Department of Finance on next steps to ensure that we select the helicopter that will meet all our mission requirements. We will also be working with the legislature on securing funding for the procurement. We hope to have the first helicopter out within the next year or two but that depends on the successful vendor and their capacity to deliver the helicopters.

We want to fly the new helicopter type to understand how it performs in different conditions. It is tough to speculate but we will have to wait until the successful bidder is identified. If we have to wait a bit longer for the right helicopter then we will. Right now we own the Hueys and have our own fire pilots, but we leverage the maintenance expertise from DynCorp International. Having a vendor supplying maintenance support has been phenomenal. We go out every three or four years to the market and rebid, although DynCorp International has been very successful and just won another term for two years with three optional years.
Andrew Drwiega: What are your thoughts regarding the value of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to aerial wildfire operations?
public sectors coming together to provide innovation. There is no better venue to bring all these experts together.
Ken Pimlott: We are making the transition to their use and have a working group looking at remotely piloted aircraft. We conducted a trial in 2013 with a [California National Guard] Predator. We literally had to go to the Secretary of State for Defense for permission as we had to address civil liberty issues and be very clear about the missions we intended to perform. But it was a good proof of concept, especially as it could loiter over the fire for 15 hours at a time.
We have also had more interaction over the last several years with international representatives including those from Greece, Canada and Australia. Nobody is isolated anymore - we are learning from everybody as nobody has all the answers.
Andrew Drwiega: So what prime missions did you identify for UAV operations? Ken Pimlott: Certainly first would be monitoring the status of the fire and keeping track of where the hotspots are. Inversions and smoke columns make it very difficult to see normally but the UAVs’ equipment helped with that. It allowed us to make decisions tactically about where to place resources to combat the most active part of the fire.
call us for your next S.E.A.T. aircraft
It also helps with fire fighter safety, identifying and continually monitoring resources on the ground. We will have an automated vehicle location system from July after the Governor’s budget [which will be similar to the military ‘blue force tracker’]. So once that combines with long endurance eyes in the sky, you have a great resource. With UAVs, we have a responsibility knowing there such technology out there. We need to look to see how best to utilize it. Andrew Drwiega: Finally, what are your thoughts on the AFF conference and exhibition? Ken Pimlott: This is the cutting edge of the aerial firefighting industry and community. As aviation is a relatively small community, it is about the private and

Aerial Firefighting 2016 returns to Australia Bushfires are a blight on Australia’s rural communities and are now increasingly threatening city limits, Sydney being recently headlined when in 2013 New South Wales experienced a series of bushfires which swept through an area of 290,000 acres, destroyed 248 buildings
and cost A$94 million. South Australia is no stranger to this phenomenon either and bushfires are well documented to be worsening in the State, according to Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology. Since early 2015, soaring temperatures and high winds have stoked the bushfires
across South Australia with more than 30 homes being destroyed including 2,000 hectares of the Barossa Valley causing damage to several wineries in the Adelaide Hills behind the State Capital. No one can forget the Ash Wednesday bushfires in 1983, which left 75 dead.

Aerial Firefighting in the ASEAN Region A target for this event is to attract the smogaffected ASEAN countries, especially Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore as well as Thailand, Brunei and Vietnam who are also seriously affected by the slash and burn effects of their forests in their region. ASEAN countries are expected to allocate up to US$10 billion to cope with unending forest fires in areas such as Sumatra and Kalimantan in Indonesia, which is estimated to suffer US$4 billion in losses in 2015 alone from wildfire effects on agriculture production, destruction of forest lands, health, transportation and tourism.

Future opportunities for joint ventures and foreign contracts in aerial firefighting are thus likely to require global support and assistance going forward.

Australia continued Aerial firefighting is a powerful weapon in the bushfireextinguishing arsenal which can, when deployed correctly, stop wildfires in their tracks. Large air tankers, SEAT and helicopters can drop water on the fire front and, in cooperation with ground fire-crews providing controlled back-burning, prove to be a tried and tested solution. Reduction of bushfires in the future is unlikely and so it is important to maintain connection with the world’s aerial firefighting community to remain current and capable. There are many different aerial firefighting solutions in existence, with new techniques and technologies entering the arena every year. It was in 2011 when Australia last connected with the international aerial firefighting community and its technologies which took place in Melbourne. The Aerial Firefighting Asia Pacific 2016 conference will address how government organizations and emergency services can challenge and support the aviation industry to begin a journey of continuous improvement and partnership, so that the Australian firefighting community can improve efficiency and dramatically reduce the risks associated with aerial firefighting.

The B747-400 SuperTanker is the true “Next Gen” air tanker. It joins the world’s fleet of aerial firefighting tankers not only as the youngest VLAT (VERY LARGE AIR TANKER) but with almost twice the capacity of the next largest aerial tanker. The two separate, but identical constant flow systems are pressurized which allows for either continuous discharge or up to eight segmented drops. Coverage levels range from CL2 to CL8 and above. The system is approved for retardant, gel, foam and water drops or the combination of any two of these agents and ground servicing for another sortie takes approximately 3035 minutes. The SuperTanker operates without any speed, altitude or operational restriction and provides a level of safety to ground personnel, property and natural resources unmatched by any other tanker, civilian or military. The exceptional and superior performance of the SuperTanker is such that it departs 200,000+ pounds below maximum allowable gross weight and can land immediately without dumping fuel or retardant if the operation is cancelled. Its dash speed of nearly 600 mph allows it to be almost anywhere in the U.S. in approximately 2.5 hours, avoiding potential traffic and ramp congestion at smaller retardant bases. Operating from its base in Colorado springs, the SuperTanker can reach virtually any point in North America in approximately 4.5 hours, ready to discharge its full load of almost 20,000 gallons of retardant before landing. With true global reach, the SuperTanker can be almost anywhere in the world in under 20 hours, including fuel stops, if necessary. Configured with 14 first class seats and 2 bunks for the support staff and additional flight crew, the SuperTanker arrives ready to begin previously coordinated flight operations with the host agency.

AeroCloud’s DataVault successfully completes first season of operation FORT WORTH TEXAS – Announced in October 2015, AeroCloud’s DataVault data acquisition and telemetry platform, designed and manufactured by Trotter Controls, has completed a successful season of operational fire-fighting on a number of AT-802F fire bombers in South Australia and Chile. Commented Marc Gerth, Operations/ Engineering Manager at Trotter Controls “DataVault surpassed expectations of ourselves and our customers. Requiring zero pilot input, the system delivered incredibly accurate near real-time tracking and operational data to NAFC, the Australian national authority for aerial fire-fighting operations. We’re delighted that NAFC has approved DataVault for the 2016/17 season, when their increasingly stringent requirements will mandate the use of real time data logging and telemetry. Their analysis showed less than a minute of difference between DataVault’s automatically submitted data and manual Flight Operations Reports.” In addition to meeting NAFC event logging requirements, the DataVault meets the increasingly common Additional
Telemetry Unit (ATU) requirements appearing in aerial fire-fighting contracts in the U.S. Designed from the ground up as an open and easily expandable platform, DataVault has the capability to support both helicopter and fixed wing aircraft of any size, as well as many different types of fire gates. For FRDS GEN II systems, the DataVault simply plugs into preexisting connectors on the Pilot Interface and Relay Box to access fire gate data via a proprietary internal data bus. DataVault also has a variety of highly configurable serial, analog and digital interfaces which allow it to support complex systems from other manufacturers, or even basic sensors such as load cells, level sensors and simple switches. Victor Trotter, CTO and president of Trotter Controls, added “Field Air of Australia has been a great partner and their operational insight has been invaluable and now we have a proven platform. We’re excited to work with their team on the next phase of DataVault enhancement – the in-cockpit Message Interface.” Fitting in a standard instrument panel 3 1/8” cutout, DataVault’s Message
• Enclosure LCD and keypad provides a direct method for configuring and interacting with the DataVault system and is included on the PLUS and PRO models. The standard model requires a Message Interface. • Message Interface allows pilots to communicate with ground operations by sending and receiving text-based communications via Iridium network, no SIM card required. • Milspec USB flash drive housing can be mounted anywhere that is convenient for pilot access. This provides access to the logging USB drive for proof of delivery data. • AUX I/O connectors provide additional sensor inputs and high-current outputs for greatly expanded capability. • H-bridge drive output can connect to and control high voltage stepper motors, on/off and proportional valves. • Satellite modem enables real-time data sent from nearly anywhere in the world via Iridium satellite, no cellular network required. • Custom firmware and sensors will unlock DataVault’s flexible architecture to provide an excellent solution for unique requirements.

Interface enriches the data collected in each sortie by including the type of retardant used and the nature of the mission itself. Operators and firefighting authorities expect this will streamline and improve the overall administration and billing process by providing real-time “tags” indicating, for example, if a sortie is a chargeable or nonchargeable event. Users have a choice of tools for visualization of message data. TracPlus, NAFC AFAMS integration partner for Australia, provides real-time tracking displays on its “TracPlus Pro” application, and a reporting tool from AeroCloud provides a variety of reports summarizing operational activity by aircraft or fleet. Data can also be exported for use in proprietary systems or more detailed analysis in tools such as Excel. Beyond that, the Message Interface supports two-way message-based communication between the aircraft and ground. Text messages of up to 200 characters in length can be sent from the TracPlus Pro interface via the Iridium network to the aircraft. The pilot can select and send a range of pre-formatted messages to the ground, for example geo-referenced fire markers and reports of persons or property at risk. As well as a telemetry system, DataVault is also a versatile control platform. Expansion boards provide the ability to drive electric motors and various types of valves to enable control of equipment on the aircraft. Victor Trotter concluded “Like many other industries, aerial fire-fighting is becoming a data driven business, with authorities demanding increasing levels of real-time information to maximize value for expenditures. We’re proud to put DataVault at the forefront of these initiatives and look forward to helping our customers meet their needs in the easiest way possible.”

agair mail editorial Good morning, Bill. Here it is, Saturday April 23rd and I’m just now reading April’s AAU. The reason that I am writing you is to say your “from the cockpit” column this month is really good. Really good. And I hope that everybody reads it slowly. Hope that you and your family are well. I’m trying to eventually get back into ag aviation, not flying ag, but doing something in the business. Until then, I’m still playing Army at the National Infantry Museum. Drive over and see me one day. Thanks again Kevin Harcourt Hamilton, GA Hello Kevin, Thanks for the kind words about my April editorial. Everything we work for is, for the most part, useless if we forget safety. I know our guys are risk takers, but like luck, you can make it what you want. If you enjoyed the April editorial, I hope that you’ll like the May edition editorial, as it also addresses safety in a relative way; “Why risk a lifetime for one minute” would be a good theme as it relates to procedure turns. The title of the editorial is “Keep Turning”. —Bill
cloud seeding Just read your April AgAir Update and I must say that reading the letters from Cuba and Kenya bought back many memories. My, what a lot of changes have gone on in Cuba, to actually see a letter from an in ENSA pilot published in a trade publication. Sometime in the mid 1970s, I was engaged in cloud seeding using silver iodide here in Jamaica using a Twin Otter. The project was quite successful and in fact scientists and meteorologists said the project increased the rainfall in the target area by at least 40%. This successful cloud seeding caused quite some interest in Cuba, who were also suffering from drought conditions, but at that time they were seeding the clouds using artillery shells fired from the ground into the clouds. It was arranged that a Cuban delegation visit Jamaica and that we should exchange experiences and data. There was quite a delegation from Cuba, who were quite sceptical of using aircraft. They believed artillery fire was the way to go. They apparently had a lot of Soviet artillery available all over the island. Well, when we made our presentation , they challenged our results, our chief meteorologist at the time told them that his personal belief was that we had increased rainfall by 60 to 70% but as a result of our rain measuring units being confined to a relatively small area, the official measurable increase was 40%. This was greeted by silence.
Well, we took our seats and anticipated a presentation of the results of seeding using artillery, but just then the head of their delegation said there was a slight emergency and they all had to return to their Embassy; they would arrange a new time for their presentation. We never got the briefing. When I read late last year that the Cuban government has modified a Yak 40 for cloud seeding. I chuckled to myself and wondered where all that artillery had gone. Regards, Dudley Beek Jamacia Hi ya Dudley! As always, good to hear from you. Yes, Cuba is a nearby, but very different; a land with fabulous people who have been under Communist rule for a very long time; a few generations. Things are changing there and I hope for the good of all. Your rendition of the rainmaking does not surprise me at all. Next thing ya know, they’ll be buying new turbine ag-aircraft! Take care—Bill
field trip Just wanted to forward a couple of photos of some recent visitors. It is class of local preschoolers. They had a fun field trip to our facility looking at and sitting in the airplanes. Plus, we provided them reading material and gave each an Air Tractor model. They were also excited when we provided them with a flying demonstration. My grandson was one of the students and needless to say he was more than a little proud showing off his grandfather’s operation. He is the one on the left with my hands on his shoulders. Hopefully, he will be the third generation of Carlson’s Ag Aviation. Take care, Lynn Carlson Carlson’s Ag Aviation Hey Lynn; Thanks so much for thinking of AAU. Good going with the students. I understand the motivation to “impress” the grandson. I bet one day he’ll make a great pilot.—Bill

Young aerial topdressing pilot learns lessons by Mike Feeney During the period from November 1960, I began working with Rural Aviation as an aerial topdressing pilot flying the Cessna 180. It was my first flying job and I had just passed the New Zealand CPL. My parents were very concerned about me entering the NZ aerial topdressing industry due to the number of accidents that were receiving much publicity in the newspapers and radio news. After telling my parents about my new job and that I would be leaving home to be an ag-pilot in Taranaki and Wanganui, I went to James Aviation at the Rukuhia aerodrome and bought a new crash-helmet, or “bone-dome” as we called them. This new silver helmet eased my mother’s mind somewhat. I felt sort of sensible and “grown-up” to own it and use it. Many pilots

found them heavy and restrictive; but I liked it when working at low-level. Looking at this 1961 photo, I look very young and had only recently started shaving. The other snapshot is on the same day; testing the dump function on ZK-BUX which had just been repainted and fitted with spray gear. Many pilots that are not from my aviation decades will find it hard to believe what was happening when I flew my first year as an ag pilot. Ten were killed in 1961. Many others were involved in non-fatal accidents and I was one of them. I came close to being Number 11 during that terrible year. Thirty-three New Zealand ag-pilots had been killed since 1950 until 1961 that raised that number by year’s end to 43. Of the 10 killed in 1961, seven had started in either 1960 or 1961 and the other three were only two with three years experience and one with six years experience. Location: Jim Hurley’s airstrip; north of Waverly, Taranaki, New Zealand. Time: About 12.00. February 9th, 1961.

at least get the main-wheels through it. At about three feet off ground, I nearly managed it, but the left tyre struck the top of the heavy strainer-post on which the wooden gate was hanging. I felt and heard a “deep” resounding “thud” as the undercarriage leg separated from the fuselage. Still unable to jettison any of the load, the 180 pitched nose down, recovered from the impact yaw and fell into the gulley. I held the nose down, retracted the flap to 10 deg., rolled to the right to avoid hitting the rapidly approaching hill face and flinched as power and telephone wires flashed overhead. I then reduced power somewhat and climbed clear of the winding gully. During previous take-off, I noted the windsock “flicking” as I went past and thought of reducing load for next trip to eight cwt. When landing, I noted the windsock hanging limply, but still signalled Pete to reduce by one cwt. for next load; but accepted the nine cwt load he had in bucket. As I opened throttle, I noted the windsock “twitching” a little. Just as tail was rising, I felt a gust hit from right side which tried to weathercock aircraft to right. Tail also sank back nearly to ground and airspeed stagnated. With 300 metres gone, I yanked the hopper lever back to jettison load. It moved about an inch, then jammed solid. Aircraft became just airborne, but squashing/mushing at very high angle-of-attack. It was far too late to abort take-off as just past the hedge there was a very steep and deep gulley. Whilst nearly tearing the hopper lever from its mounting brackets, I steered directly toward the gateway in an attempt to
When I looked out of the open left side window I noted the gear leg was gone. I could not look out the right side due my shoulder harness and the reduced cockpit size due to the hopper configuration intrusion into the right side. However, as I flew back to the strip I sighted a Cessna undercarriage leg lying near the bottom of the gully and cleverly deducted that it could well be from my aircraft. Then, as I approached the strip, I saw Pete running down and performing some form of very energetic dance. He was jumping up and down, pointing vigorously at his left arm then turning and pointing in the direction of New Plymouth, our main maintenance and repair base. It was then, as I turned over top of Pete, that I saw the shadow of my aircraft...the remaining right leg was still attached but whether it was damaged and the wheel and tyre serviceable, I could not determine.

The aircraft seemed to be handling OK, given that it was in an overloaded state. The stabiliser trim screw-jack tested OK, but I could not run it too far back due to the extreme aft centreof-gravity position. Jim Hurley’s strip was far too short to land back on when grossly over Normal Category max. weight. As I circled overhead, I considered the Waverly golf course, Wanganui aerodrome and, if fuel and weather permitted, Rural Aviation’s main base at New Plymouth; the optimum choice as it would greatly assist the engineers to have the damaged aircraft delivered right to their ‘doorstep’, so to speak. I quickly calculated that I had enough fuel to fly to New Plymouth; even into a headwind and could always divert into Hawera or Stratford should the weather pack in. So, I radioed Charlie on the H.F. radio, informed him of the mishap and said I would be coming to New Plymouth and asked where they would prefer me to land. As I set off, I flew past my mate Pete and dipped a wing to say goodbye. I noticed that it was becoming gusty and turbulent and the windsock was standing out. As I flew carefully along at reduced airspeed, my mind was wandering over such things as how Pete would get home to Wanganui and whether the right tyre was still inflated, which I doubted as it had struck the top rail of the gate and shattered it into matchwood.

With a near-full hopper load behind my back, I pondered what would happen if the right wheel dug in and flipped me inverted on touch-down. Such was my preoccupation with such dismal thoughts, that it was not until about five minutes later that I noticed that I still had 10 degrees of flap extended. About halfway back, the boss himself, Miles King, came up on the radio and said they had told the tower about my ETA and situation (we had no VHF in those days). Miles told me to orbit south of the field so he could come up in a Cessna 150 to take a look at the undercarriage and rear end of my machine. I was somewhat nervous when the aerodrome came in sight; but mainly because I anticipated getting a right bollicking and probably the sack. On our company frequency, which was shared by some other operators, Miles asked me to try the hopper lever again. Nothing came out. He then went lower and said the right wheel appeared to be OK and the tailplane looked undamaged which was a relief as I was somewhat concerned that it might do something strange at lower airspeed. I had never landed a C-180 at such a high weight. He suggested I do a long approach onto the lengthy grass strip which ran past the hangar. I noted quite a crowd out in front of the hangar which made me cringe a little. Anyway, Miles just said something like “Don’t get too slow on final...I’ll see you on the ground young fellow!” and he peeled away leaving me to face the growing audience of engineers and office staff. What I did not know was that a NAC DC-3 was due in and the onlookers included quite a number of passengers and their friends. I was also not aware that some person, who listened in on our HF frequency, had phoned the

local newspaper who dispatched a reporter out to the Bell Block aerodrome to capture the “drama”. Hence, the photo you see below (very tattered and faded after all this time). It became even more ‘overblown’ because the NZ broadcasting people picked up on it which meant that my mother heard about it on the evening news. Anyway, to make a short story longer, I flew miles downwind before turning onto a long final approach with some gusty cross-wind from the left. The nor-westerly was really kicking in by now. I set the flap to 30 degrees and trimmed well forward as the 180 was tending to pitch up a little. The approach was flat with substantial power on. Prop to full increase, cowl flaps full open, carb heat to cold as the threshold fence approached, flap to 40 and I began to feel more confident. I gently flared with power still on, then gingerly touched the right wheel onto the soft grass to see what would happen. It felt good. The tyre was still inflated and the undercarriage leg felt normal. Rolled the right wing down which brought the hopper load and centreof-gravity more over the right gear and the machine felt quite happy like that. As the hangar was getting nearer on my left side, I pulled the mixture control back to idle-cutoff and the left wing ever so gently lowered to the grass. Then, even with the yoke full back, the nose pitched down, dug in, and I was looking at the grass as the 180 stopped in a very short distance. And that is all there was to it. The left wing was virtually undamaged with just some grass stains on the tip. The engineers jacked up the left side and trundled BUI away straight into the repair shop.
Senior Ops. Manager, Frank Ferrier (and possibly one of the Rural Aviation founders, Phil Lightband) took me into the office and listened to my explanation. Frank said almost nothing until he opened a cupboard and asked me if I felt like a whiskey? I accepted happily, even though I had rarely tasted Scotch. He then told me to book into our usual hotel and I could fly back to Wanganui the following day in my own aircraft, ZK-BUX, which was in for a check. BUI was a spare machine which I had never flown before the incident. Later, over a beer in the pub, Don Erceg, a senior pilot, informed me that BUI, for reasons which nobody could quite determine, was a bit of a “dog” performance-wise. I had noticed that its cruise speed was some eight MPH slower than my favourite BUX. When we tried to empty the hopper, we found the outlets hopelessly blocked with a mix of thick grass clods, wet soil and wet superphosphate. It had packed down so firmly that a jemmy bar and spade had to be used. I am fairly sure that when I completed Jim Hurley’s topdressing a few days later, I made a deduction for his load of fertiliser which ended up in New Plymouth. I certainly recall asking him if he wanted me to pay for his demolished gate. He just smiled and said that he had intended replacing it anyway. Next month, Mike Feeney reviews his first season accident for what went wrong and why.

Prado’s Safety Points
Adding risks of operation The risks to which agricultural pilots are exposed are usually physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic and outright accidents. A significant risk during flight is an excessive noise level that can be above 100 dB. This can be mitigated by using a suitable helmet with noise suppression. One problem found with helmets is the ear covers over time lose their ability to lower the noise level. Another physical risk is related to the extremely high temperature in most aircraft without air conditioning systems. The most critical time is while the aircraft is loading and when a rearward wind offsets a windmilling propeller. If
the pilot opens the door, engine exhaust and chemical vapors enter the cockpit. And lastly, a third risk is the physical vibration caused by the engine. Ergonomic risks of agricultural aircraft begin with access to the cockpit, where the pilot enters through the doorway having to bend the neck causing for many pilots cervical problems. It is
recommended to never enter the aircraft with the helmet on the head, besides the weight of the helmet, there is the leverage incurred from bending the head forward. The dumping lever of most agricultural aircraft requires the pilot to tilt his body to the left to reach and trigger the lever, jettisoning the load that causes vibration by the replacement of the load with air inside the hopper. A pilot with a misaligned spine could injure it while doing this. In 1990 in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul Brazil, the Ipanema pilot deliberately increased the risk of operation. In

this crash, the aircraft entered into an asymmetric stall during the procedure turn colliding with the ground. During the investigation, it was found that the circuit breaker of the sound-light stall warning was unarmed. The purpose of this safety device is to alert the pilot when entering pre-stall speed, so that the pilot can reduce the angle of attack, reduce sideslip and increase power to recover to maneuvering speed. According to information gathered from the company, the pilot was overly selfconfident regarding ag operations. He disarmed the circuit breaker due to the continuous noise caused by the stall horn, which bothered him. This shows that he flew the procedure turn in the pre-stall environment, literally flying “on the edge”, until a day when his alert level was reduced by fatigue and there was the predictable fatal accident.
aerobatics. The aircraft was a total loss and the pilot died from the impact. The job of the agricultural pilot is very different from other aviation-related work. The agricultural pilot has a load to be evenly distributed within the target area within a defined volume (kg or liters per hectare). This is done with a calculated flow rate (kg or liters per minute) for the application. The responsibility of the pilot is very great because the application cannot drift to adjacent areas where sensitive crops may be, or bodies of water, people, animals, or structures where a drift of a pesticide or fertilizer would be considered contamination. Thus, the ag-pilot is already under stress without adding more. We need to work on the details, the little things, because an observed unsafe condition left untreated can lead to an incident. If so, the incident should be investigated thoroughly, analyzed and procedures modified, lest the incident will repeat itself and become an accident.

Chad Frei passes Chad M. Frei, 39, of Grangeville, died Saturday, April 23, 2016, as the result of a vehicle accident. He was born Aug. 11, 1976, in Cottonwood, the oldest of four children, to Mike and Jana Frei. He attended Sts. Peter and Paul School and graduated from Grangeville High School in 1994. He attended the University of Idaho and then began running his first flying business, Grangeville Flying Service, in 1997. He obtained his pilot’s license that year and began his flying career. He flew for McCall Air Taxi as its youngest backcountry pilot and also worked for Valley Air Service, working his way into an aerial applicator position. After flying many years for Valley Air Service, he bought the Grangeville satellite business and built it into Frei Aviation. He worked the spring season on the Camas Prairie and flew the summer months in Burley, Idaho.
During his childhood, he enjoyed camping with his family, exploring the outdoors with his siblings and cousins, and riding horses. He shared this love of the outdoors and horses with his daughter Claire when he purchased her a horse on her 8th birthday. Chad’s love for adventure included a CJ7 Jeep, in which his daughter Emily spent many hours riding along with the top down. In 1996, he married his high school sweetheart, Jayci Hill, and they had four beautiful children, Josh, Nathan, Claire and Emily. They vacationed to places like the San Juan Islands, Victoria B.C., and the Oregon and California coasts, as well as many backcountry strips in his Cessna 180. He will always be remembered for his love of aviation and his outstanding ability to fly. Chad passed on his love of aviation to his son Josh, and taught him to fly at the age of 16. For Josh’s 17th
birthday, Chad watched him solo and later completed his private pilot check ride in the Cessna 180. He enjoyed ski plane flying throughout the winter and making videos with Josh. He was involved in the Pacific Northwest Aerial Applicators Alliance as president and a member of the board of directors. He also served on the Sts. Peter and Paul School and parish board and was active in the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Jayci; children Josh, Claire and Emily at their home in Grangeville; parents Mike and Jana Frei; siblings Russ Frei, Kristin (Cody) Black and Alex (Margaret) Frei; brother-inlaw Matt Hill; and in-laws Mike and Shelly Eimers. He was preceded in death by a son, Nathan; and grandparents Cecil and Cora Earp and Al and Caroline Frei of Grangeville.

Larger droplets, older nozzle tips by Alan Corr I recently tested a plane in Nebraska that had an issue last year, with some field streaking. When I looked at the results of the pattern test, it was not that bad, but perhaps a little narrower pattern than I expected to see on that aircraft type. When I read the droplet cards, I knew why. There were a large number of fine droplets, an even larger number of huge droplets and very few droplets in the 275 to 375 micron range.
I asked the operator how old were the nozzle tips. He told me about four years old. After doing some checking, I have found that tips will last a maximum of four to five years (depending on usage). I am sending him new tips. We will re-test and I am confident the problem will be solved. The larger droplets will merely fall to the ground and will not spread much outside the wingspan and many of the fine droplets will evaporate on a warm day. The result is a narrower swath, especially under calm or light wind conditions. As I have been pattern testing this year, I continue to see a much more uniform and wider pattern with increased pressure. Forty-five psi seems to provide a much better pattern than a lower boom pressure. In addition, the droplet size spectrum is much better with a significant reduction in fine droplets. If you are interested in having your planes tested, please let me know. You can visit my website (agrisprayconsulting.com) to request a pattern test.

Safety first, bananas next in Colombia by Bill Lavender URABA, COLOMBIA — Often when one thinks of Colombia South America, the American drug eradication program with State department ag-planes spraying comes to mind. However, Colombia has had an aerial application industry for well over 50 years that began with Piper Cubs spraying bananas in the mountainous area of Armenia. There is even a YouTube video about these early and daring applications. There are approximately 40 ag operations with about 110 agpilots working today in Colombia treating a variety of crops including bananas, rice, corn, sugarcane and soybeans. But, it is bananas that require the most treatments with the larger ag-aircraft. Compañía Aerofumigaciones Calima S.A.S. is considered the largest aerial application company in Colombia operating 11 turbine Thrushes, one radial Thrush and five Cessna C-188s. It was formed just over 50 years ago by Juan Emillio Valle and Carmenza Fina de Valle.
Every Calima Thrush is outfitted with a fuel flow meter, but as a safety measure, all fueling is checked visually with a fuel measuring stick each time the pilot takes on fuel. The ground crew fueler is always dressed in red coveralls to assist the pilot in identifying and confirming when he is taking on fuel. Additionally, three ground personnel are assigned to each aircraft.

Juan Emilio Valle was a Chilean ex-air force pilot. While on his way for a visit to the U.S. in the early 1960s, he stopped in Colombia where he met Carmen, later his wife. He liked Colombia and realized farmers needed an aerial spraying service. He hired a Chilean ag-pilot to train him to fly ag. He flew ag three years for a Colombian company, then Juan and Carmenza bought a company and a year after in business, Juan and Carmenza renamed the company after the local native Indians, Compañia Aerofumigaciones Calima S.A.S.. The
company had two Pawnees. Carmenza was always an active partner, working every day from 1969 until her death in 2013. Juan left the company in 1988 and returned to Chile while Carmenza remained in the company, joined later in 1991 by her daughter Sandra and in 1999 by her other daughter Viviana. In 1969, a group of banana producers who had formed a corporation back in 1966, Uniban in the Urabá region of Colombia, were ready to run their own exports and spraying.
(L-R) The rinsate catch basin that works as a separator. Rinsate is recycled as load water.— A one-way valve at end of boom allows for draining the booms. The boom pressure relief hose is built into the Transland boom.— Calima uses a 3-inch load hose with a dry break that is wrapped in PVC pipe sections for easy moving. It takes four minutes to load 480-gal, the max load for Calima Thrushes. The loading area has four load points with filters at each point. — Standard flight gear for pilots is helmet and full Nomex; flight suit, shoes, gloves and neck scarf.

Since their beginnings, Calima has been their sole provider for spraying their banana plantations. Now, almost 50 years later, Calima is Uniban’s sole supplier treating 100% of Uniban’s banana plantations both in Uraba and Magdalena. Currently, Calima ‘s market share is 60% of Uraba’s banana plantations, 11% of of Magdalena’s banana plantations and 100% of Aliar’s soybean and corn in aerial spraying in Puerto Gaitan, the Colombian oriental plains area. Starting with only 700 hectares of banana plantations, today Uniban controls over 20,000 hectares of banana plantations in the Urabá region. The initial nine aircraft were loaded and departed within 16 minutes. requiring 45-50 applications a year. Calima was overwhelmed. At that time, it operated eight C-188s. The fleet grew almost overnight to 25, mostly C-188s and Pawnees, with Calima buying and leasing any ag-aircraft it could find. After visiting a Costa Rican turbine Thrush operation in 1981, Calima started buying turbine Thrushes, each one replacing 2.5 smaller aircraft. Colombian politics prevented the importation of more than two aircraft at a time. Otherwise, Calima would have to export an equal amount of products as it imported. Uniban stepped in and bought three turbine Thrushes in 1983 that it still owns today, but is flown and managed by Calima as

1. Calima is expanding its maintenance shop to take on maintenance outside its own 17 aircraft. It has also started the process to begin an ag-pilot school for other than just Calima pilots. 2. Calima has a dedicated, elevated control tower for monitoring all aircraft by giving instructions with two-way radios and loud speakers. Calima aircraft are in contact with each other, the field inspector and approximately 10 competitor ag-aircraft working within the same area at the same time. Controllers determine the size of each load based on wind, humidity and temperature charts, taking readings in real time. They also determine when the pilots change takeoff direction based on wind speed and direction, as well as giving landing and takeoff clearances. 3. At dawn before initial takeoffs begin, Operations Manager Pedro Pablo Correa discusses a loading issue with pilot. Note the control

tower in the background. 4. Calima president, Sandra Valle, with loaders dressed in standard personal protection equipment (PPE). 5. With more than 58” of annual rainfall, it is important to keep critical aircraft components covered, e.g. fuel tank caps and cowling vents. The GPS lightbar is driven by a Satloc G4 connected to an Intelliflow controller.

part of its 11 turbine Thrush fleet. The remaining C-188s are flown from the other three bases on row crops and small banana plantations, of which Calima treats 100% of Uniban’s banana plantations in Santa Marta. The 11 Thrushes require 16 pilots to keep them productive, arriving at the airport at 5:30 a.m. for the day’s briefing. Each pilot flies 22 days straight, then is off for eight. They are limited to nine hours of duty time a day of which no more than five hours can be flight time. This rarely creates a problem, as most of Calima’s applications are flown the first three hours of the day. This is due to heat, humidity and wind in this equatorial region. The weather is constantly monitored during applications. Ideal conditions are 28°C with wind at 3-4 meters per second and relative humidity at 70-80%. During the rainy season, rain will stop the spraying. Urabá receives annually 58” of rainfall. Calima loses approximately 40 flight days out of the year to rainfall. The only other days it is not operational are New Year’s, Easter and Christmas.

Strictly speaking, the first takeoff is exactly at official sunrise, usually around 6:30 a.m. Flying from a 900-meter paved runway in Urabá, Calima aircraft make 10,000 to 12,000 takeoffs a year, the most for any privately owned airport in Colombia. With typical application rates of five gallons per hectare (two GPA), of which two gallons are mineral oil, the Thrushes average 140-150 hectares per hour (350-375 acres), each treating 90,000 hectares (225,000 acres) a year. This takes four to five 30-40 minute flights a day for 2-3 hours each day, logging approximately 550-600 hours a year for each Thrush. Applications are visually monitored by a field inspector, as well as collecting droplets on oil sensitive collections cards. The inspector looks for consistent 50-60 droplets per square centimeter with an approximate size of 200 microns. To achieve this, the aircraft are outfitted
with stainless steel CP nozzles using a 25-meter swath. Application rates range 5-10 gallons per hectare (2-4 GPA). The application rates and formulations are determined by the grower. Calima’s corporate offices are based in Medellín. Overall, it has 103 employees, of which 60 work in Urabá. In several instances, multiple generations are employed at Calima. From the Medellín offices sales, strategic planning, human resources, parts and supplies management are carried out. The company structure is tiered with Sandra Valle as president and two vice presidents below her, followed by seven general managers. Andres Rendon is vice president for sales and strategic planning. Freddy Puentes is
vice president for operations. Seven general managers are responsible for administration/finance, instruction for the Calima ag-pilot school/marketing, maintenance, chief pilots, servicing of clients, safety management/integration and general sales. During the past 50 years, Calima has grown into a large and impressive agricultural aviation operation. It brought the first C-188s and turbine Thrushes to Colombia. It was the first company in Colombia to use GPS units. Following the footsteps of their founders and parents, Viviana and Sandra have kept Calima at the forefront of new technology, while at the same time maintaining customer satisfaction and safety.
The Calima crew; dressed in green are maintenance, white are administrative (Medellín) and in flight suits are pilots.

AT-602: Trim your overhead. You’ll reduce costs and increase profit margins when you scale a multi-plane operation down to a single-plane operation. Air Tractor’s AT-602 makes it an easy choice. The big 630-gallon payload moves you up to high volume production, reduces loads, saves time and helps trim operating expenses compared with two smaller planes. The AT-602 is the ideal solution for 5-gallon work on center-pivot circles. Step it up with an AT-602. Visit your Air Tractor dealer.
