Dangerous ground operations I came across a friend of mine a few years ago that I noticed looked different from in the past. I didn’t often see this friend, as he lived hundreds of miles away. What I noticed was one of his fingers was missing. Interesting. I wondered out loud, how did that happen? My friend explained to me that he was standing on a six-foot ladder about half way up when he stepped off of it catching his wedding band on the ladder. Even though it was a short step down, it extended his hand and sliced off his finger entirely. Not a pretty sight. I stopped wearing rings to work many years ago. I once stepped off a water wagon catching my ring finger on the top filler lip. Fortunately, it did not hold and I escaped with a very bruised finger. However, it was enough for me to realize just how close I had come to losing my wedding ring finger. The problem with rings is they become sharp around their edges from everyday wear. When caught and 200 pounds is pulling, it becomes a finger guillotine. Another rule I have when working around batteries is to remove my metal watch. Once when I was removing a battery from the rear fuselage of a Pawnee the wrench, my watch, the airframe and the positive post of the battery all met at once. In less than a second the watch was “welded” to the airframe. I was able to break loose, but

not before being severely burned at the wrist. One other time that I will remember for the rest of my life was when loading fertilizer into my plane with an auger driven by the PTO shaft of a tractor. If you are guessing the PTO guard was missing, you are right and there is a very good reason why that guard should be there. It was in February and I had on an old long sleeve shirt wearing it like a light jacket, open at the front. The tail of the shirt came in contact with the spinning PTO shaft and did its best to suck me into it. Fortunately for me, the shirt was old and tore away from my body as I jerked upwards. The shirt was wound tightly around the shaft and only shirt remnants were left on me. I’ve heard of farmers getting caught in spinning PTO shafts and being literally beat to death. The tractor never changed its rpm and I doubt it would have, even if my body had been caught in the wrapping around the shaft. I suppose all sorts of rules can be implemented to be safe around an agaviation operation. This workplace can be just as dangerous on the ground as in the air and involve even more people. Mandating not wearing jewelry or loose fitting clothes at an ag-operation would be a start to having a safer operation. Simply

not walking under the aircraft for any reason while the prop is spinning would be another good rule, but I know one that will be broken. If that is an absolute must, then a hand should be touching the leading edge of the wing at all times until ducking down underneath. But, the problem with that is if you are checking something like the spray pump under the aircraft, you can get distracted and upon exiting walk directly out into that spinning prop. It has happened before. Unfortunately, the U.S. has suffered its first ag-aviation fatality for 2017. On March 19, a Mississippi pilot was killed while flying. I don’t know the details, but I’m sure they will eventually show up in the NTSB reports. Regardless of the reason, we still have lost a pilot. My condolences go out to the pilot’s family and friends. Like the saying goes, you can never have too much runway, or be too safe. Three causes of accidents: 1. Didn’t think, 2. Didn’t know, 3. Didn’t see. Keep Turning

agair mail small operations I would like to see articles about small, one or two plane operations that do good work and stay in the same area. Large operations that hop all over is not my favorite reading. Charles Klein Lake Placid, FL Charles, Thanks for your handwritten letter on your subscription renewal form. AgAir Update tries to feature all types and of sizes of operations. It is a challenge! Because of that, we take the stories as they come. Having stated that, the good news is your wish has been granted with this month’s cover story about husband and wife team Justin and Ashley Houston of Air Works in Tennessee. Enjoy! -Bill

Speed Dear Bill, I believe the “root cause” for these unusual fatal ag-aviation accidents referenced in the article about the U.S.’s NAAA (see page A-26, April 2017) study is the higher speed modern agplanes fly. As any car crash investigator (I was one) will tell you, the +50 mph difference in speed between the venerable Ag-Cat and the AT-802 means a 250% increase in kinetic energy that has to be dissipated by the airframe in a crash before ripping the pilot’s body apart, especially internally. There’s a limit to what you can do with collapsible structures, air bags and belts. Bye, Ernesto Franzen Porto Alegre, Brazil Ernesto; I agree speed has an effect on accidents, but the problem seems to be more because of the “inexperience” reflected in the study. Lots and lots of pilots are flying much faster aircraft these days, some never have flown anything slower and are doing fine. However, when you plug in the survey’s factors, experience seems to be the trigger that ultimately causes the accidents in the faster aircraft. Although each year, there are always plenty of accidents in “slower” aircraft, too.—Bill Bill: What I mean is that speed is a factor on the fatalities, not on the overall number of crashes. In the 50s, 60s and 70s, when you crashed in a 90 to 110 mph Ag-Cat, Pawnee or AGwagon, the kinetic energy the airframe had to absorb before it hit the pilot was X; nowadays, in a 140 mph turbine, it is 2 to 2.5X. It is over twice the energy hitting the pilot to crush his rib cage, snap his

A-8

agairupdate.com

neck and make his brain crash against the cranium, causing a concussion and possibly death. I know speed is a factor in modern ag-craft productivity, but with it, inevitably comes a higher risk. Bye, Ernesto Franzen Porto Alegre, Brazil Ernesto; You are thinking in terms of survivability and I am thinking of why the accident happened in the first place. If the pilot does not have the accident, then the kinetic energy is irrelevant. What the study points out is why these accidents happened. We are on two different topics. The industry’s concern is, why is it happening? More so than how to survive it. That could be a whole another discussion, which your point carries much validity.—Bill

Helicopters How are you doing? Hope everything is well. Bill, I am wondering, do you know about helicopters used in crop dusting? My client wants us to find out about them. Saludos, Sandra M. Valle/Calima Medellian, Colombia Hola mi amiga Yes, helicopters are used in ag aviation, but I don’t think too much for banana spraying, mainly due to the application volume requirements. Helicopters are very limited by load capabilities, usually around 400 liters. AAU featured helicopters on two of its covers last year and last month’s. If you have any specific questions, just ask and I’ll gladly respond. Besides, I owe ya for that very nice 30-year old rum you gave me! Take care and hope all is well with you and your family. —Bill

Good Morning Bill, How are things in Georgia? I am having my annual open house next week (March 31) and the local (Fargo) talk show radio host broadcasts his program from my shop. We have been doing this for the past 10 years, as he is a good friend. His listening audience is seven states and three Canadian provinces with a consistent 65-70% listening audience. He is a moderate liberal and his sister is one of our state senators (Heidi Heitkamp) of whom I have given a Mustang ride. Last fall when there was spraying for the Zika virus in Florida and South Carolina, there were issues with bee kills. Of course, he mentioned it on radio and that is what the general public hears – spray planes kill bees. Would you know a contact for more details about the spraying. I would like to set the record straight with him and his audience with actual facts. Maybe his audience would realize benefit our industry provided for that health epidemic.

To my embarrassment, AAU did not have any coverage of the Zika virus with the exception of picking up a few Internet links and posting in our eEditions. The problem with that is those links are probably no longer available. It was South Carolina where the bee kill occurred. I’m not sure who the operator was, nor the one flying over Miami for those Zika applications. I think you would start with emails to Rick Stone of Southeastern Aircraft (Air Tractor dealer) for the Florida area and the SCAAA. Also, Jack Woodward lives in South Carolina. Although he probably wasn’t involved in the mosquito spraying, there is not much that goes on in South Carolina that Jack doesn’t know about. I have copied all three with our email. Also, I’ll publish our emails and maybe an AgAir Update reader will know more and be able to help. As for those pesky wind generators, give me some time work on that. Take care and keep the dirt off “Boomer”, my favorite P-51! —Bill

Also, I appreciate your comments in the last issue of AgAir Update to Erich Bachmeyer about wind energy. He is working for a company that is trying to get farmers’ signatures for easements on their land to install 120 towers only four miles from my airstrip. His company hosted an open house here before Christmas. I attended and stated the same things you did, but he apparently wanted a second opinion, as he didn’t like what I had to say. His idea of technical advances to make flying around these wind generators a safe option is almost comical.

“Hou” it’s done by Graham Lavender

Husband and wife team Justin and Ashley Houston (pronounced House-ton) build an aerial application business from the ground up. There are many aerial application businesses around the world that are operated by families. Father and son, husband and wife, daughters, cousins and siblings; the combinations are endless. For one husband and wife combo from southern Kentucky, the aerial application business is relatively new and the two are taking it on by storm. Justin Houston and his wife, Ashley, operate Air Works, LLC based out of Hazel, Kentucky. About seven years ago, Justin and his father, Robert, decided to become involved in aviation. Robert farmed 2500 acres near Hazel and had plenty of land for the two to dive into what would be their new hobby. The duo bought a Quicksilver Ultralight and with a little instruction began flying the experimental homebuilt off a grass strip on Robert’s farm. The aviation bug bit and over the course of the next few years, Justin purchased a Christian Eagle

Ashley and Justin Houston started Air Works from the ground up, both loading before Justin moved to flying full-time. They are pictured here in front of one of the two Thrush 510Gs. and his father, a Super Decathlon. Justin completed his private rating and the two dove a little deeper into aerobatics and aviation. One day, while at a small municipal airport, Justin met ag operators from Arkansas that were passing through the area. After some small talk and the realization he was taking pictures of the ag planes, decided to learn a little more about the industry. Justin and an

old friend of his, who had extensive connections through an ag retailer, partnered and bought two Ag-Cats to start their new ag-aviation business. Justin realized that to survive in the ag aviation business, that he would need mentoring. He hired two experienced pilots to fly the 450 radial and -20, turbine Ag-Cats. Air Works, LLC’s first season was 2012. Justin and Ashley both loaded the

In 2013, Justin graduated from Flying Tigers Aviation in Bastrop, Louisiana to polish off his ag training and returned to Kentucky to start spraying. He also hired Lance Lofton to fly the radial Ag-Cat. By this time, both his mentor pilots had fulfilled their obligations and Justin was ready to take the lead pilot role and take 100% ownership of the flying service from his partner. Justin and Lance flew both Ag-Cats during the 2014 season, while Ashley handled all the mixing and loading, billing and management of the flying service. During Lance’s first season with Air Works (2014), an engine failure landed him in a bean field. His successful dead-stick landing saved the aircraft. Justin decided to sell it and moved Lance into the -20 Ag-Cat and he purchased an AT-502. Air Works operated the AT-502 and turbine Ag-Cat for the 2015 season. During that year’s Thrush Summer Tour Justin had the opportunity to fly the Thrush 510G at Mid-Continent Aircraft and immediately knew he had to have it. Justin was impressed with the aircraft’s overall handling. It seemed to fit his mission profile better than the AT-502 for longer ferries and heavier loads.

INTERNATIONAL

aircraft and ran the business, all-thewhile learning from industry veterans, who were their pilots. When the aircraft weren’t spraying, Justin would build time in both Ag Cats, to prepare for his commercial rating and eventually ag flying.

After the purchase of the 510G from Mid-Continent and in less than a couple months, Justin traded the AT-502 for a dual-cockpit 510G from Souther Field Aviation in Americus, Georgia bringing his fleet to two Thrush 510Gs. The dual-cockpit works well for Air Works because most of the work is off satellite strips. Ashley will oftentimes ride back and forth to the airstrips where the loading equipment is located. This helps to keep equipment off the road and the two find they have more time at home. The 2017 season is already underway for Air Works. Both aircraft at full speed spreading fertilizer on wheat. This year is the busiest, so far, for dry work. Air Works mostly applies insecticide and fungicide applications at 3-5 GPA. Both 510Gs are equipped identically with SATLOC G4s, Stainless Steel Fabricators spreaders for fertilizing and cover crops and CP-11s for liquid. Each airplane has Mid-Continent’s Load Hawg for assisting with fertilizer loading and the standard equipment like smoker, radios, etc. Justin’s dad, Robert, couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get involved with ag aviation. He bought Justin’s -20 Ag-Cat, converted it to a -27 and as part of Air Works handles all the business around his farm and near their headquarters in Hazel. The Air Works’ season kicks off in April, and comes to a close around the end of October with the last bit making cover crop applications. Air Works has been

doing cover crop applications since it was formed with an increase in acres every year. Air Works’ growers like the coverage provided by airplanes. Recently, AgAir Update spent the day with Air Works watching the husband and wife duo and pilot Lance, harmonically work spreading fertilizer on nearby wheat. As the two aircraft were back-to-back taking on material, Ashley was loading with the auger truck, booking more acres, ordering material and making sure growers were happy; truly “hou” it’s done.

Am I charging enough? by Bill Lavender Are you ready for a contestable, detailed dissertation on the per hour costs of running an ag operation? Do you believe it is a function of fuel used and engine time only? When calculating your per hour costs, do you really take into consideration all of your business expenses? In a discussion many years ago with JD Dunson of Airforce Turbine Service in Texas (now retired), the topic of operating costs came up. I had just talked with an operator who had attended one of JD’s convention seminars. According to him, JD had presented certain facts to his audience that shined an impending light upon true operating costs. I asked for his notes, as this is one of my favorite things to ponder. If you can’t honestly look at costs, you can’t succeed. There are too many parameters for calculating operating costs to cover in this article. So, I’ll take the simplest example possible and work from there. It’ll give you an idea how it works and from that you can interpolate your costs. To start, let’s assume we are discussing a single, turbine aircraft operation flying 500 hours a year. From my travels, I’d say this scenario is common. The values I use are provided by respected individuals in the marketplace, as well as from attendees to JD’s seminars. The values are conservative, which really means, it costs more than what I’ve portrayed here. I’ll itemize costs for a better visualization:

Of course, anyone can tear holes into those numbers. But, for the most part, the dissection will only raise the total cost. Treating 200 acres an hour at $7.00 an acre, works out to $1,400 which would give the owner/operator a $262 an hour profit (18.7%). In some cases, consistently spraying 200 acres an hour can be a challenge with a 500-gallon aircraft. Plus, everyone knows that an ag-plane is not productive 100% of the hours logged in a season. There we go, chewing away at our average. Is 18.7% enough profit margin? In the above scenario, most likely the operator and pilot would be the same person. Is this enough profit to accept the risk and responsibility of being an operator? Why not just be a pilot? The pilot made almost $20,000 more without the financial risks. Any shortcoming in the above calculations come out of the 18.7% profit margin. This is where honesty begins to come into the equation, being honest with yourself. Of course, significant costs could be combined by the owner being pilot and manager.

You simply cannot operate a business for pilot’s commission that requires a $650,000 equipment expenditure with untold thousands of more dollars for support equipment, payroll and office/hangar space.

Per hour costs: 1. Average cost of a first-class, used turbine ag-plane $650,000. In 1985, I sold my flying service. I could not pay myself pilot’s pay (20%) after collecting the season’s revenues and paying the bills. So, I decided to sell to my competitor with the agreement I could fly my old customers and at least earn pilot’s pay, but without the headaches of being an operator. Without a doubt, there are perks for being an operator that would help offset the lack of pay for those duties. Are these perks enough? How do you allow for hidden costs? Now, the serpent raises its head. You simply cannot operate a business on pilot’s commission that requires a $650,000 equipment expenditure with untold thousands of more dollars for support equipment, payroll and office/hangar space. There has to be a cushion to allow for hidden costs (advertising, work clothes, legal/accounting fees, etc.). The lack of this cushion has been the downfall of many businesses. There’s always the possibility of an unscheduled engine expense that is more than your engine reserve (if you are really setting aside an engine reserve). Being the pilot and

any combination of manager and owner, you expose yourself tremendously, as the entire operation is dependant upon your good health. Any day you could wake up ill and have to call in another plane and pilot. Where are these costs in the $1,146 per hour gross? As an operator, are you as valuable as the pilot? If so, then should you make the same percentage of the gross as the pilot? Somewhere in the above budget there has to be an allocation for operational profit. A rule of thumb could be 20%. Plug that factor into your hourly gross and you are now at about $1,400 per tach hour. This is not your final figure. What about personal health and life insurance premiums, employee benefits, the costs to earn CEUs, attending conventions, incidental meals? And, the list goes on. What is really going on here is the need for a budget. In that budget, there has to be profit for the company in order for it to accept its responsibilities, which include a financial return for the owner of the business. If you think you are building equity in your aircraft, maybe even in your business, that could be another whole topic of debate. Ag-aircraft are high use and abuse equipment, making it difficult for them to retain value. As for the blue sky of the business, oftentimes it is only there because you run the company. How much hidden costs to use in a budget? No one knows for sure, but a good starting place is looking at hidden costs incurred during the last three years. You may find it will easily require a significant percentage of the gross dollars. It won’t be a fixed amount. Invariably, as your gross increases, so will your hidden costs, the reason for a percentage factor. Ok, where are we now with our hourly gross? For the sake of simple math, let’s round that up to $1,400 per hour (every tach hour) with a 500-hour season. There used to be a magical rule of thumb (that should not work out by any reasoning) that an operation should gross the value of the aircraft, $1,400 X 500 = $700,000. Not quite the case here, but almost.

A-14

agairupdate.com

Don’t count on this rule of thumb to be an easy way to calculate your costs. There is no reason this should work out the way it did; it just did. You’d be remiss to not examine your expenses over the last three to five years, with adjustments according to any significant changes. We have still not added a line item for hidden costs. Another $100 a tach hour, driving the gross to $1,500 an hour? Adding another aircraft to the calculation would not double your expenses, some can be shared, and your overall hourly cost would be reduced. But, your break even cost (a new calculation) will go up! Based on the above scenario, it is doubtful an operation with a single 500-gallon turbine aircraft can operate 500 hours in a season for less than $7.50 an acre at 200 acres an hour. Sure, application rates and ferry distances play a huge role in costs. But, so does the “break-even factor”, where you have to get past a certain point in your gross to make a profit. Knowing how much it cost to operate your aircraft is a complex issue. You may never know exactly, but you must have some gauge to go by. You must be honest with yourself. Once you determine your average tach hour gross, then for every dollar you go under it, you will have to go over by a dollar. Can you do that? In closing, we’ve discussed a 500-gallon turbine ag-plane, assuming it is the median aircraft for our industry. If you use a smaller aircraft, for instance a piston-powered aircraft without the ability to gross $1,500 an hour, you really find yourself in a dilemma. Fixed, operational costs, outside the aircraft’s costs, will take a bigger bite of the hourly gross. On the other hand, you could say this works inversely with a larger aircraft, for example an aircraft with an 800-gallon hopper. There are a lot of assumptions with these calculations. But, they should point out the apparent need for each operator to determine his own true costs with a margin of error. Replace my numbers with yours and see if you are making or losing money. If you are operating for less than your true costs, you are only eating up equity and living on borrowed money (and time). There simply is no way around it.

Advancing agriculture with young people by Bill Lavender Good community relations for an agoperation can often be the means to spelling success. It takes a special effort outside the daily tasks of running a flying service to be involved with the local community. But, the rewards can be very satisfying, while at the same time promoting goodwill for the company amongst the local residents.

Willie and Larry recognized a need to keep local young people in the area after graduating from high school, tech school and college. Many of them were leaving for bigger cities and different lifestyles, thus creating a shortage of skilled

was also responsible for the formation of the Florida Antique Biplane Association and OFFC (Old Farts Flying Club). Willie Lee is a longtime ag operator from the Belle Glade airport. The two put their aviation expertise together and decided a good way to keep young people in the local agricultural industry would be to host a fly-in giving free rides for the experience of flight and viewing firsthand how vast and important agriculture is to the area.

Willie Lee has been in ag-aviation for over 60 years. He started flying in a Cub while in high school checking on the family’s cows and eventually chasing birds from corn crops for neighboring farmers. His flying skills expanded to spraying with a Stearman for Belle Glade operator Harry Hunter. Before graduating from high school, Willie bought out Hunter in 1968 and that was the early beginnings of Aerial Crop Protection. “The Stearman is still my favorite ag-plane,” chuckles Willie.

When Willie Lee’s Aero Crop Protection got behind with its spraying, Earl Davidson from Mississippi (father of Mississippi operator Ricky Davidson) would come over to help with his Stearmans seen here flying in a stacked formation.

Today, Aerial Crop Protection operates two AT-502Bs. Willie retired from flying several years ago nearly 60 years and 39,000 hours of flight time in his log books. Pilots Wes Platt and Charlie Inderwiesen do most of the flying with Willie’s son-in-law, Bart Perryman,

The next morning, people from throughout the area began to arrive for a full day of airplane rides that included flying 72 young people, as well as enjoying a complimentary barbecue hosted by Florida Crystals Corporation. Florida Crystals Corporation originated in Cuba more than a century ago and is based in West Palm Beach, Florida. Other participates in the event included Roma Air Corp, Glades Air Service, Aerial Crop Protection, University of Florida Extension Center, City of Belle Glade, John Deere dealer Everglades Farm Equipment, Case Farm Equipment dealer Glade & Grove Supply, U.S. Sugar

Corporation, Florida Cub Flyers and the EAA Chapter 203 with its Young Eagles Coordinator, Rick Golightly. Without the enthusiastic participation from these groups this event would not have been possible. From the efforts of many, especially Willie Lee and Larry Robinson, a Glades Agricultural Scholarship Fund (501C3) was formed from donations for the agricultural education of deserving local young people to further the goal of local young people staying and working in the area. This year, an additional scholarship was formed, the Aviation Scholarship Fund, to help local young people discover and enter into aviation. Plans are already being made for next year’s fly-in following the success of this year’s.

truth in flight

“Dr. Pilot” Those who make their living with ag aviation usually spend long periods of time in small towns or even isolated villages. We live a life of impromptu and urgency. We are so used to be the “salvation of the crop” that we often forget our limitations and, when we get sick, we even feel embarrassed for pausing for a moment and seek for help. Here in Brazil, we know that it is not always easy to schedule a doctor’s appointment. Either by the precarious public service or the slowness of health insurance companies making the process difficult.

IF YOU WANT TO PREVENT THIS,

In the eagerness to seek healing and to return to flying, sometimes we self-medicate. Self medication is a Russian roulette in a form of pills and can give you a bad headache. Literally. From an “innocent” headache, or muscular pain, to extreme cases of depression or heart disease, when we are medicated (even by a professional) there

is always the risk of some reaction or even side effect that will interfere with our flying performance. I found it very interesting when I went to the drug store to buy a cough syrup and the pharmacist asked what I did for a living. When I said that I was an ag pilot, she recommended a herbal syrup to avoid the risk of drowsiness. In fact, researching the issue, I have found that homeopathic and alternative medicines are widely used and indicated in aerospace medicine. An excellent guide created by Lieutenant Eduardo Serra Negra Camerini, M.D., and published on the SNA website (the Brazilian National Union of Airmen), shows in detail the drugs allowed, those recommended after medical evaluation, and the drugs that are prohibited.

The Storm Shield™ is the latest advancement in bird/drone strike protection technology for general aviation. The Storm Shield™ is: • 8 Times Stronger than Factory (OEM) Air Tractor Windshield. Upon completion of certification through the FAA, this new technology will be available for all Air Tractor and Thrush models (Center Windshield).

It is not rare to find pilots suffering in silence with depression, heart problems, high blood pressure, among others, juggling to hide their problems, especially when close to the health inspection. It is a delicate situation, especially when there is a family depending on the pilot’s work to survive. Truth be told: as in an airplane, in most cases, the problems with your body happen gradually. Good habits as a good diet, sleeping well and physical activity is a constant challenge in our lives, but it brings a lot of benefits. It’s like a preventive maintenance. Therefore, we need to listen to the signals our body is sending. Constant pain, excessive tiredness, changes in sleep, extreme variations in body weight and other “emergencies” may be signs that something is not going well. And, since our health is directly linked to flight safety, this is a topic that should be on our list of priorities. Machines need periodic maintenance, and we’re no different! Cicero, the Roman philosopher wisely said: “Health is preserved by the knowledge and observation of own body.”

2016 fatalities According to NAAA’s accounting, there were 13 fatalities in U.S. ag aviation during 2016. This is the most fatalities in a single year since 1998, which was the year the PAASS program was implemented. Even though the 60 recorded accidents for the year tied an all-time low, there has been a surge in fatalities the last three years. NAAA has made an effort to identify the “Root Cause” for the increase in fatalities with some interesting stats coming to the surface. Regardless of the total time and ag time of those fatalities: 75% involved pilots with less than 500 hours in make and model, 43% involved pilots with less than 250 hours ag time and 50% involved pilots with less than 100 hours logged in the last 90 days. A conclusion could be made that pilots with flight time within these parameters should exercise extreme caution during aerial applications.
