Find my friends Today, our industry is fortunate enough to have sophisticated GPS units that can track ag-aircraft in real time using the Internet. However, not all ag-aircraft have upgraded to this very valuable function. There was a time when not all ag-aircraft had a GPS unit, but that’s not true today. I believe it to be reasonable to expect the time will come when all ag-aircraft can be tracked in real time, even with a smartphone.

Actually, that prediction could be true today, if the operator so desired. For the iPhone there’s an app called “Find My Friends”. It is a free app that can be downloaded from the app store. I use it all the time, not to locate ag-aircraft, but for family use.

So, how does the pilot feel about being tracked by others at any time? Well, it is a simple matter for him to turn off the function when not flying. However, now somebody has to remember to turn it back on before a flight. I suppose that would be a good excuse to use a checklist.

The operator, ground crew, office personnel, or anyone that needs to know where a particular ag-plane is operating can install this app on their smartphone. Another smartphone, typically the pilot’s, can be in the aircraft. The ground based phone “requests” the aircraft based phone to allow it to follow and the aircraft based phone accepts. Now, as easy as opening and viewing the app, the ground based phone can see in real time exactly where the ag-aircraft is located, view it making the application or ferrying to or from the field. It is possible in some areas where there is a limitation of cell service, either not enough coverage or the aircraft could be too high, that this type of tracking will not work. However, usually it will. I know several operators that use the Find My Friends app. We all know there are times when an aircraft has been out a little too long, maybe the ferry distance was longer than

I’m sure it would be comforting to the operator, or ground personnel, to be able at a moment’s notice, open the app and see the location of the aircraft. Should something unfortunate happen, with the satellite imagery used in this app it would be easy to find the last location of the aircraft.

Now that I have dropped the “P-word”, as in Pilot, it may be an opportunity to touch on a concern a pilot reader emailed me. The pilot wanted to know how could he bring up a maintenance issue without getting fired over it. To quote the email: “What is the best way for a hired pilot to voice his concerns about an operator cutting corners on aircraft maintenance without getting fired?” In the ag-aviation world, the term ‘maintenance’ takes on a different meaning than when used in general aviation. Sometimes, methods are adopted to keep an ag-aircraft in the air that would not be acceptable elsewhere. That’s not to say an operator should violate FAA regulations. My suggestion to the pilot is to use his personal judgement. Technically, he is responsible for the airworthiness of the aircraft he is flying. That could be taken to the extreme. If it was

me, I would act based on my perceived safety and how I felt the FAA would react towards me. I believe tolerance has to play into the decision. The end result, ‘let your conscience be your guide’. Getting fired is better than getting hurt, or worse, killed. Besides, if the corner cutting is to such a degree you fear for your safety, you are better off not working for the operator. To directly address the question, sit down with the boss and politely point out your concerns, then act accordingly. In closing, I was reading about aircraft sales and marketing for general aviation. The author said that if 15% or more of the market was for sale, then it was a “buyer’s market”. Hmmm... I wonder how that author figures out how much 15% of the market really is? It’s easy enough to count the number of ag planes for sale in AgAir Update’s classified section. The unknown is the total number of ag-aircraft in service. If there are 4,000 ag aircraft in the U.S. in service, then there would need to be about 600 for sale to be a buyer’s market. Even if there were only 2,000 ag aircraft in service, then there would need to be 300 for sale. Using the author’s calculation, I don’t see how there ever could be a “buyer’s market”; but what do I know? Until next month, Keep turning...

As I am looking at the article, a lot has changed. Odette, my doctor girlfriend before is now my wife, we have two girls, 9 and 4 years old. Air Services who used to serve Dole-Stanfilco is now Airwolf Aviation. I now own Aerowurkz Aviation, I can say a major player in the industry with 16 spray planes. We still rely on AAU for updates. We also have now air charter, medevac, FBO, and an approved aviation supply, supporting the flying school of my family.

I remember my first taste of raw fish (not sure if it was sushi) was dining with you and your girlfriend. I also remember the dive shop, rock climbing wall and your kindness to provide me a place to stay in an apartment of yours. I appreciate your invitation to return for a follow up visit. I think it would be interesting. There is a 50-50 possibility I will travel to China in April 2018. If I do, that may be a good time to stop for a visit with you for an article about ag spraying in the Philippines. I will keep this in mind and will let you know my plans many weeks in advance. My son, Carson, and I had the opportunity to spend five weeks in Australia last summer pattern testing aircraft. Everything had been lined up by Adam Hooper, Program Manager for the Aerial Application Association of Australia and after our arrival we spent a few days in Sydney recuperating from the long flight and then traveled to Griffith, New South Wales (NSW) for a day of assembling flight line equipment that we had decided not to ship to Australia. We spent two days of

pattern testing with Ed Dowling, Thomson Aviation and Gerard Higgins, SkyCroppers. Mid-afternoon on the second day of testing, we were flown to Camperdown, Victoria by Brett Hislop, Border Air Services and spent the evening pattern testing his plane. We finished the various passes in Camperdown as it was getting dark and traveled back to the hangar to evaluate the string. When I plugged in my spectrometer, sparks flew, smoke filled the office and the spectrometer went dead. I still had a large number of aircraft to test in Australia, so I went to work on the machine. I was able to determine that the power converter had failed, but after electrocuting myself twice,

I felt it would be better to leave the repair job to someone more qualified than myself (someone that remembers to unplug it before working on it). After visiting with Dick Whitney in the U.S. throughout the night by phone, he was able to line up a new power supply and have it shipped to us. Early the next morning, Stephen Death of Hazair and Adam Hooper picked us up in Stephenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cessna 206 and we flew to Hazair in Aubury, NSW. Hazairâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Aircraft Maintenance person, Greg Burke quickly found parts and repaired the spectrometer, so we were up and running again. After a day of testing for Hazair and Ag Flite near Aubury, we were flown south by Mick Gribble to

Benambra, Victoria where we froze while testing Mick’s aircraft. From Benambra, we traveled north throughout New South Wales pattern testing in Quirindi for Les Brown of Quirindi Air, then to Piallaway to test for Jono Middlebrook of Middlebrook Air Operations, then to Moree testing Ben Brazier at Aircair Aviation, Charlie Tootell at Precision Aerial Management and Brent Nottage with Helispecs. After two, busy days of testing in Moree, we traveled to St. George, Queensland to test for Jason O’toole at Balonne Airwork. Following twelve days of nothing but travel and pattern testing, we finally flew north to Cairns, Queensland for a four-day break on the beach. We elected not to go for a swim as there were signs along the beach warning the presence of salt water crocodiles. At the end of our break, we rented a car and drove a couple of hours inland to Atherton, Queensland where we tested planes for Hamish Jacob at Atherton Tableland Air Service. We then headed to the south coast for a full day of testing planes at Aerotech in Kent Town, South Australia. That evening, Aerotech held an informational meeting for their customers and conduced a canopy infiltration demonstration using a fluorescent dye comparing ground application to aerial application. The aerial application (at a much lower application rate) won the contest hands down.

All were very hospitable and friendly. It was just like testing planes here in the U.S. except they don’t have my brand of beer! After being gone for five weeks, traveling well over 40,000 miles, testing 30 ag-aircraft,

completing over 300 passes and using over 10 miles of string, we finally arrived back home. We had a great time in Australia, met so many tremendous people and we were lucky enough to have an experience few people get to have. I truly appreciate the Aerial Application Association of Australia and its membership for making our trip so enjoyable!

Our next stop was all the way over to the west coast of Australia to test planes for Brad Jones, Bungulla Farming in Tammin, Western Australia and then south to Esparance where we spent a day testing for Scott Mackie of Southeast Air Ag. Scott gave us a tour of the Esparance area which is a beautiful place located right on the southern coast. We spent the night with Scott and his family and truly appreciated their hospitality! The final stop on our trip was back in Aubury where we dodged rain storms to test helicopters for John Murray with Forest Air Helicopters. We had a great time with John, but I could tell that Carson was getting tired of testing planes when he decided to pick a fight with a kangaroo that had wandered near the flight line. Carson did, however, run away from the fight. Each operation that Carson and I visited was a very high quality aerial application operation.

GE Aviation announces first run of advanced turboprop engine Milestone accomplished on schedule; certification begins in 2018 PRAGUE—GE Aviation’s Advanced Turboprop engine, the first cleansheet turboprop engine to hit the Business and General Aviation (BGA) market in more than 30 years, successfully completed its first engine test run at GE Aviation’s facility in Prague, Czech Republic, on Friday (December 22). “Running the Advanced Turboprop engine this year was our biggest and most important goal,” said Brad Mottier, vice president and general manager of GE Aviation’s BGA and Integrated Systems organization. “This milestone comes as a result of two years of tremendous effort by a worldwide team. We’re developing a real catalyst for the BGA market and we’re executing on plan. The integration of proven technologies has expedited the design, development and certification cycle of the engine.” The Advanced Turboprop engine will begin certification testing in 2018. The engine will power Textron Aviation’s new Cessna Denali, which is

By the time the Denali enters into service, the engine will have completed more than 2000 hours of testing. “The continued testing will generate valuable data from the engine and validate the aerodynamics, mechanics, and aerothermal systems,” said Paul Corkery, general manager for GE Aviation Turboprops. “With the engine run and most of the individual component testing completed, early indications show that we will meet or exceed all the performance numbers we have quoted for the engine.” The new 1,240 SHP-rated Advanced Turboprop engine is in the family of turboprop engines aimed at BGA aircraft in the 1,000-1,600 SHP range. With 79 new technologies introduced, the engine offers a portfolio of advanced technology, as well as unparalleled performance and efficiency. The Advanced Turboprop engine features an industry-best 16:1 overall pressure ratio, enabling the engine to achieve as much as 20 percent lower fuel burn and 10 percent higher cruise power compared to competitor offerings in the same size class. At 4,000 hours, it offers 33 percent more time between overhaul than its leading competitor. When installed on the Denali, these engine efficiencies allow for a larger cabin experience with a comfortable 6000-foot cabin altitude at a 30,000-foot cruising altitude, as well as class-leading low cost of operation compared to smaller aircraft in the category. The Advanced Turboprop engine’s proven technology developed from GE’s large commercial and regional engines has reduced engine development risk and timing. Since Mottier unveiled the Advanced Turboprop engine at the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) Convention in November of 2015, GE Aviation has committed more than $400 million in development costs for the engine. GE also finalized an agreement with the Czech government to build its new turboprop headquarters for development, test and engine-production in the Czech Republic. When complete and at full production rate, this new facility is expected to have 500 additional employees. GE Aviation Czech has already added around 180 jobs, with another 80 expected in 2018.

Wanting something different for his flying service than the norm in Brazil, he bought a Piper Pawnee PA-25 from Mid-Continent Aircraft Sales and Service in the EUA. To make the aircraft and his company’s service unique, he

flew the Pawnee to Air Repair in Mississippi to have a Satloc GPS unit installed, the first for a Brazilian ag-operation, before ferrying the aircraft home to Ribeirao Preto. By the third year in business, Garcia’s operation had grown to a fleet of two Pawnees and a radial engine Thrush. The Garcia fleet has transitioned over the years from Thrush and Pawnees to three AT401s and today a Pawnee, turbine AT-402, PZL Turbine Kruk and the R44 helicopter. The sugar cane factories insisted on the use of a helicopter to treat fields that are often as small as one quarter hectare. These applications are charged an hourly rate. When I visited Garcia in 2001, sleeping overnight in one of his hangars that provided a bunk, Garcia asked that I fly his Pawnee with winglets, the only one of its kind in the world. When I flew the winglet Pawnee from

The Trichogramma galloi wasp that hatch from the eggs applied by Garcia Aviação Agrícola’s Piper Pawnee PA-25. arguably the first person to fly, Garcia had built a 3,000 foot ANAC approved runway from which he flew for sugarcane farmers in the region. In the pioneering spirit, this year Garcia has added an R44 helicopter to his fleet of ag aircraft. He is one of the first helicopter ag-operators in Brazil. Garcia does not fly ag with the helicopter, but has hired a Climb Aircraft Division graduate to make the helicopter applications. Without its winglets, the Pawnee is used for a very unusual application to the sugarcane. Outfitted with a cockpit mounted distribution tube, the Pawnee pilot spreads Trichogramma galloi eggs over the sugarcane fields. These are eggs that hatch microscopic wasps which sting sugarcane borer eggs in the sugarcane preventing them from hatching. The Pawnee can distribute the eggs over a 40-meter wide swath applied at a very small rate of one kilogram per 1,200 hectares.

This type of application was developed by Garcia and local researchers. Last year 8,000 hectares were treated with great success. This year it is expected that over 10,000 hectares will be treated in this manner. It felt very good to return to my friend Garcia’s operation after 17 years. There were a couple of new hangars added and a helicopter service center, as well. Garcia was an innovator seventeen years ago with his winglet Pawnee and the first ag-operation to use GPS units. Today, his innovation has not slowed down. Garcia Aviação Agrícola is operating a helicopter to please its sugarcane clients, expanding organic crop applications and the exploring the application of wasp eggs by aircraft to control insects.

Don Taylor, beyond the typical ag-pilot stereotype His passion for flying is very obvious, but he is also very methodical and can always easily explain the airplane’s reaction. I know that because when I converted my Brazilian pilot’s license in USA, he was the flight instructor who gave me the biannual flight review endorsement. But more than that, he gave me lots of great advice. And for sure, I learned from him things that I’ll never forget. Like, “The one thing that is constant in aviation is gravity!” Now, I have the pleasure to tell you a little bit about his aviation career and history. Don Taylor was born December 2, 1933 in California and lived in a farming area. At the age of eight years old he was driving a bulldozer and at twelve he started to learn flying from his dad. Don’s father was a pilot too and he flew until he was 85 years old. After WWII, the U.S. government sold surplus airplanes and his dad bought a BT13 for $800 dollars. At 13 years old, Don was like his dad’s auto pilot, holding the altitude and tracking low frequency radio beacons, which was very hard to do. In 1946, VOR was the super new technology and it took him awhile to figure out how to use the system. He volunteered for the Korean War in 1950 and was sent to Northern Italy and Austria. That war lasted for three years and he was discharged

from army in 1956. He went on to earn his Commercial Pilot’s License through the GI bill. At that time, Don and his dad kept an airplane at the airport, so he would fly and watch the spray planes. When Don was 32 years old and and farming with his dad, who was hard to work for, he left home when a local crop duster offered him a job. The same guy helped him earn his CFI rating and he started working as flight instructor. By the way, he’s still instructing to this day and I can tell from my experience that he is a great flight instructor! There’s more; he has an A&P license with Inspection Authority (IA). In 1965, Don started working as a spray pilot flying a Stearman that today is still his favorite airplane, even with lots of hours in all types of different aircraft. Among the many things he learned with the Stearman one is, “Listen to the airplane.” Don made a modification to the Stearman that made it an even better ag-aircraft. He moved the top wing forward so the angle of incidence decreased and made the stall speed lower and more predictable. Don remembered a story from that time when he and Jack, the other spray pilot, were spraying a nut tree farm that had a power line running diagonally through it. Jack liked going where nobody went before and Don was following him. They were spraying close to a river bottom. Jack made a pass underneath the wire and Don made the same decision, but then he realized there was a tree in his way. He was

already committed to his decision, but that tree was quite a bad surprise for him. The right wing hit the tree. He looked to his side and saw pieces of the tree on his wing. The aileron was shaking. But, once he stabilized the plane, he finished the load. Later he patched the damaged wing and found 13 holes on the top of the lower right wing of the Stearman. One of the holes was coming from the leading edge and passing through the aileron. Since he was in a hurry and rushed, his repair wasn’t that good. He found that he’s a better pilot than a seamstress! So, our legendary pilot went back to work. When he took off, the patch puffed up. He was ‘a little bit’ concerned the aileron could break off. He had taken off before the glue had time to dry. The aircraft was still flying, so he took another load. Since the aileron didn’t break, he took another load and guess what? After a couple of loads, the aileron was improving. The wind was finishing the drying job and putting the fabric in its place. For many years, Don experienced several adventures flying the Stearman. In 1976, he flew the Ag-Cat for the next two years. Don really likes round engines. In all his years of flying them, they only gave him one engine problem, when a Number 1 cylinder head blew off. This produced a big flame in front of him and the engine quit. But, that was the only time he has a major problem with a round engine. In 1978 he flew his first turbo Thrush spraying in California. He found the engine to be great, but the attitude of the new airplane was a challenge for him. So, he decided to attend a school to learn more about these new turbine engines.

One time, Don went to the Thrush factory to pick up a new turbo Thrush. He was flying over Texas at 500 feet when he saw a shadow and then, two F-102 fighters were flying just beside him. At the time, George Bush Jr was flying that type of airplane in Texas, so maybe it was him, waving to our legend. Later, Don was flying from the Grand Canyon Airport ferrying an ag-plane to California. He had filled up the wings’ fuel tanks and hopper with fuel. Before landing, he had been going along Highway 395 and as usual that time of the year, it was snowing. Don knew California was open and clear. So, when a Baron took off climbed through a hole, he followed him. When he climbed through the hole there was just mountains with no place to land. Somehow he made it over them. But, he learned a valuable lesson and would never do it again.

Don and his buddies had an interesting way to find a good airstrip, simply sending a driver out in a pick up truck. If the driver could drive 0.2 of a mile and not fall off the seat, that airstrip was good enough to use for landing and taking off!

Yvonne must be doing really fine. When I saw them together, they were both in very good shape physically and had lots of energy and a great sense of humor. Don was also awarded the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award in June 2008; which is the most prestigious award presented by the FAA to pilots who have exhibited professionalism, skill and aviation expertise for at least 50 years while piloting aircraft. There’s a question that I always ask of these legends and that’s when I get out my ‘gold coin’, like something that I always keep on my mind. I feel blissful sharing these treasures. So, here we go!

Rock ding! As I began rolling down the runway, a little pop of dust materialized in the prop arch. Less than a blink of an eye, it was there and gone. It was an unmistakable thing. A quick signature, signing off a rock ding in the prop. Ding! Crap! I hate getting a rock ding! I’d rather catch a communal disease. I made a mental note to double down on the post flight inspection and to be sure and notify the mechanic about the terrible gouge I knew now existed in the prop blade.

I flew off, there was no difference in performance, but in my mind I could see the tiny dent, or chip being shredded in the 2200 RPM disc of whirling air in front of me. I was nearly certain the propeller would shatter at any minute. I focused

my eye on the approximate place in the propeller arch and scowled at it. When the work was done, I looked the old bird over dreading the carnage of the propeller blade. There it was. About a quarter inch, right in the leading edge. I checked the other two blades but there was no further effect. Apparently it was a good solid homerun kind of hit. It sure would have hurt if anyone had of been down range of that rock. Turning away from my wounded prop I saw

Joe the mechanic cussing at something in the hangar, wiping his hands on an old rag. “Hey Joe,” I hollered. He turned and glared at me as though I was some creature that just emerged from the woods. “What?” he answered. I told him about the incident, apologized for being such a rotten pilot and asked him to take a look at it. He simply shrugged grabbed a couple files from the pile of tools on the bench and accompanied me to the flight line. “You want me to do it?” I asked. He rolled his eyes. “Naw, I’ll get it.” He looked the injury over like an old doctor would inspect a boil in someone’s armpit. Then illustrated his expert aeronautical knowledge by exclaiming, “Looks like ya picked up a rock or somethin’.” I just nodded. He looked at it again and flipped his file over in his hand. “Well... It ain’t so bad.” He began dressing the dent out carefully, skillful hands smoothing out the blemish with artful precision. Then I asked him how his day was going.

I interrupted his story only for moment. “Wanna check the other ones?” I asked, thinking it might not be a bad idea to take a little from the others just to balance it out. He finished smoothing the knick and ran his hand along the length of the propeller. I figured he must have been getting closer to finding his dog by then. Joe drew his file up and down the length of the blade. The action made a musical, metallic sound, that is somehow pleasing to the primordial senses,

Joe’s dog was currently safely sequestered at home. He, of course, would be grounded for a spell to try and live down his bad dog excursion and could possibly be facing a visit to the veterinarian. The loose, lady dog down the street was grudgingly returned to her owner and warned to stay away from Joe’s dog. Or, else! The propeller looked great. You could hardly tell if there had ever been any sort of rock ding anywhere along the length and tips of all three blades. It was thing of beauty. I shook Joe’s hand. “Thanks! I really appreciate it.” He smiled and nodded. “No problem, it’s what I do,” he said turning the propeller 360 degrees to evaluate his work. “But I’ll tell you what…” He warned, pointing his file again. “If that (female dog word) has puppies, it ain’t my fault!” Roger that, Joe. Roger that. Fly well, and Stay safe!

“Ssschhhiiing... ssschhhiiing…” He explained how he finally located his runaway pooch and the sultry mistress who had shamelessly lured him away all the while honing the prop blades like he was putting a fighting edge on Excalibur. “Ssschhhiiing... ssschhhiiing…” I listened intently while watching his actions like a squire seeing a knight prepare for battle, but still keeping a worried eye on the receding paint line of the propeller face. The Gillette company would be doing good if they could get a guy like Joe to work for them. If they could keep him good and mad.

Hammerhead turns We all know of some ag pilots who make hammerhead turns and maybe you are one of those who do make these hammerhead turns. It is my contention that those ag pilots who continue to make turns like this, will one day not be able to pull out of the dive in time and the ground will rise up and smite them a fatal blow. Too bad.

a hammerhead turn, the airplane will suddenly and without warning snap-roll to the inverted position. When this happens at 600-700’ agl, there is very little chance of recovering control of the airplane. I do know of one case where the pilot was able to get the airplane rightside-up by stomping a rudder pedal a split second before the airplane slammed into the ground. He hit so hard that the airplane did not slide 20 feet from the initial point of contact with the ground. The fuselage broke in half and both wings broke at the fuselage and hit the ground. The pilot survived, but sustained very serious injuries.

Once I overheard two of our students talking and using hand gestures about an ag pilot that one of them knows who continuously pulls his AT-502 nearly vertical, kicks a rudder and falls right back onto his next swath. The student’s obvious admiration for this seasoned ag pilot really bothered me. In Wayne Handley’s excellent film, Turn Smart, he demonstrates a hammerhead turn. In my opinion, he should not have IT’S ALL ABOUT AIR! included this in an otherwise, outstanding training film. Still, I do have all of my students watch this film. It’s my opinion that making hammerhead turns all day is like playing Russian Roulette. Getting help The New Year can bring great expectations but also great pressure. Coming on the heels of the holiday season, combined with shorter days, more darkness, and possibly cold or bad weather, the start of a new year can be extra stressful. Feeling overwhelmed at this time of year is not unusual. In fact, I’d say that not feeling a bit overwhelmed is unusual. You are not alone. At this time of year, and at other times in our lives, many of us have felt the need to reach out to a member of our personal support system or perhaps a professional. However, due to the stigma associated with any kind of mental health treatment, many of us try to cope with difficult situations on our own instead of seeking help from a counselor or therapist. So what is the situation for pilots, who need to meet a higher medical fitness standard than the general population?

Seeing the words “pilot” and “mental health” in the same sentence tends to make people uncomfortable. Most people remember the GermanWings 9525 crash in 2015, an event that caused civil aviation authorities and aerospace medical professionals all over the world to re-examine how they handle issues related to mental health. Not surprisingly, this level of attention might make pilots reluctant to seek any kind of mental health assistance. This fear isn’t new. We know that some pilots have long believed that they face a choice between being a pilot or getting help. Here’s what I want you to take from this article: Getting the help you need does not prevent you from holding a medical certificate, and help is not automatically disqualifying.

Where to Turn

Whether it’s an acute stress buildup or a more chronic issue, finding someone to talk to can be very helpful. Your first step might be a call to your primary care physician. This provider will be familiar with you and with the resources in your area, and thus able to suggest some good options. If a few sessions with a mental health professional can help you resolve the issue, that’s fine. If you feel it is helpful to regularly see a professional, that’s fine too. In fact, several airlines have even set up Pilot Assistance Programs and peer support groups to help. My point is that seeking help is a good thing.

antidepressants in 2010. This is part of a broader effort to allow pilots to seek help while maintaining the safety of the National Airspace System (NAS). For a number of once disqualifying conditions, there now is a path to certification.

Common Cause

As I noted earlier, there are times many of us will need help. Though the information in this article may not be relevant to you, it could be relevant to a friend or hangar mate. I encourage you to share this information with those who need it. Perhaps just knowing that talking to a professional is not a situation that needs to be reported would encourage that person to get help. The priority for everyone involved in the NAS is safety, and being both physically and mentally healthy is a big part of that. As a reminder, follow the recommended IMSAFE pre-flight personal checklist: I – Illness M – Medication S – Stress A – Alcohol F – Fatigue E – Emotion The “S” and the “E” refer exactly to what I have been saying — assess your stress level and emotional response before flying and get help when necessary. And when appropriate, do not fly.

1988 AT-301 in excellent condition. 7500 hrs TTSN. Strong running Younkin 1340 engine w/750 hrs SOH in July 2016. Overhauled carburetor, propeller governor, and fuel pump in July 2016. 0 (ZERO!) since IRAN on 23D40 prop (Memphis propeller, Dec 2017). Prop AD will need to be complied with 5 yrs from now. Wing AD was complied with in Dec. 2016 500 hrs ago by Georges out of Texas, one of the best AT repair stations in the US. No eddy currents or other inspections, other than visual, will be needed for 3000 hrs and gives you 6500 hrs until the wings will need to be done again. Fuselage is in excellent condition. 1988 is the last year of the 301 and this aircraft is only a few serial numbers from the end. When the plane was at Georges, it was found that there was a 401 fuselage instead of a 301 fuselage on the plane from the factory. It is theorized that the factory ran out of 301 fuselages and grabbed a 401 instead. The fuselage is in perfect condition with all reinforcements factory installed. There is no sign of corrosion anywhere and you are encouraged to bring your flashlight and check it out. New battery installed Dec 2016. The spray system is in top condition. New booms (Dec 2017) from Transland have never had chemicals in them. The CP-03 nozzles & check valves have been overhauled with new seals & O-rings. New Agrinautics spray pump (Dec 2017) coupled to a Lane electric fan/ brake. Backup spray pump as a spare will be included in the sale. Transland spray valve, loader valve, and 2” quick coupler overhauled Dec 2017. Everything in the spray system is new or freshly overhauled so you will not have any problems in the coming season. I have taken this system over the string and the setup is in great spraying configuration. Included with the sale is a Transland SwathMaster spreader. Currently the plane has an Ag-Nav Platinum GPS w/flow control, but I would like to sell the plane with a Satloc Bantam w/Intelliflow system & L7 lightbar.
