The invisible, silent propeller It is getting to be a busy time of year for most ag-operators north of the equator; acres coming in, piling up on the books, getting behind. That brings up a point that most of us don’t worry about too much and that is the dangers of a spinning propeller . Almost always, our industry hot loads its aircraft, the propeller turning. Those blades of aluminum don’t stop for flesh. It’s a gory thought, but it can and does happen, walking into a spinning propeller. Very few people survive an encounter with a spinning propeller. Why does it happen? How can a person work around a running ag-plane and still walk into the prop? It is somewhat understandable that a child or a visitor not familiar with aircraft could do this, but a pilot or loader? The brain is a mysterious thing. With a spinning prop, a couple of things are going on that can fool it. First, the noise heard is interpreted as the engine, not the propeller. So, as far as the brain is concerned the propeller is silent. Second, the propeller is nearly invisible. The loader or the pilot are busy, distracted, and at the front of the aircraft is an invisible, silent device that can kill in a second. That is how it happens.
A-6
agairupdate.com
A good practice is to always assume the propeller is turning, even when the engine is shut down. This programs your brain to always work as if the propeller is turning. You may be doing a task as simple as removing chocks, or taking a quick look at the spray pump before the engine is started. Still, let that hand trail along the leading edge toward and away from the fuselage and the danger area. Don’t cut across under the fuselage to the other side of the gear. If you do it when the aircraft is not running, you’ll do it when it is, all about programming your brain. When you do cross over, walk around giving the prop a width berth. Look at it as if it was some long lost lover. The kind of lover that would tear you apart if given the chance. And the obvious, never climb off the wing onto the main gear tires. One slip or twist of the foot and you could be in the danger zone. Everybody knows all this about propellers that has spent any time in agaviation. Loaders learn it quick and pilots are told from their first flying lesson. However, propeller-strike fatalities still happen and it happens to those who know better.
On another more uplifting note, this past May 27 was International Crop Dusters Day. A few years ago an old timer, Bob Wheat of Texas, implemented this day and AgAir Update helped him promote it. He’s been successful at it. For those who ask, Bob sends people a certificate that acknowledges this day. I haven’t heard from Bob in a long time. However, he can be emailed at oldduster@aol. com. He probably still has a few of those certificates. Graham made a post about International Crop Dusters Day on AgAir Update’s Facebook page. Amazingly in less than 24 hours after the post, 144,402 people saw it. The post received 1,900 likes and was shared 890 times. There may only be a few thousand ag-pilots worldwide, but one heck of a lot of people now know that May 27 is our day. Mark your calendar to celebrate it next year. Until next month, Keep Turning…

agair mail AgNav system As always I read AgAir Update from front to back and then review it in case I missed something. I’ve been noticing your many articles on ag operations worldwide and must congratulate you on the work done. It takes a lot of research to have an interesting company make an article, especially first page cover stories. I would like to point out to AAU readers that in the May article on Serrana Aviacion Agricola, that company has eight or more AgNav GPS systems. Regards, Fred Ramirez President www.agnav.com

First Aviator I am Brazilian and 15 years old. I read your article about who it was that invented the airplane and found it very interesting. I’m in love with planes. I am here to give my opinion. I think who invented the plane was Alberto Santos Dumont from Brazil because he was the first to fly. I know there came the Wright brothers after a few years and say they were the first to invent the plane. This leaves me in doubt,
was it true? But, in the end the Wright brothers’ studies led to a great revolution in aeronautics that today’s aircraft are used for all. I have a doubt US schools teach it was Alberto Santos Dumont, but instead the Wright brothers. Joao Paulo Sao Sebastiao, SP Brazil Ola amigo! Obrigado por email, thank you for your email. I have written about the possibility that Santos Dumont was the first to fly an aircraft. Of course, in American schools, it is as you say, the Wright Brothers are taught to be the first aviators. Santos Dumont may have been the first aviator. It is an argument yet to be settled. Study hard and maybe one day you will be an aviator, too!—Bill

Hello Bill! Congratulations on the Calima article, it turn out to be a great one. Best regards, Mauricio Pinzon Bogota, Colombia Thanks Mauricio; Sandra Valle at Calima in Colombia runs an excellent operation, following in the footsteps of her parents with 50 plus years in business. That in itself is quite an achievement!
Mark Glinz of Glinz Ag Aerial in Bottineau, North Dakota accepts the second delivered 502XP with its PT6A-140AG engine and four blade propeller. The aircraft was sold and personally delivered by Grant Lane, owner of Lane Aviation, an Air Tractor dealer for the U.S., Mexico, Central and South America. Glinz started his company with a radial AT-401, then over the course of time moved up to a AT-602, then AT-802 and now the 502XP. As well as an operator, Glinz is a large farmer in North Dakota.
Wait until you read the article on Sanidad Vegetal in this edition. I hope you like it as well, as it is also an old Colombian company, but on the other end of the scale as far as its fleet of aircraft.—Bill
Kruk Have you ever met an ag-pilot that flies the Pezetel Kruk or Turbine Kruk? I’ve been watching videos of the plane on YouTube and it seems to be a very maneuverable aircraft. What is its wing span and hopper capacity? I ain’t seen a single ag-plane this year. Depressing to the core!! Will Crump Bolivar, TN Hello Will; Yes, I’ve met several pilots over the years with Kruk piston and turbine experience. I’ve seen the turbine version demonstrated several times in Argentina. Actually, I’ve flown both the 600 HP version with the PZL-3S engine and a special experimental version with the Dromader’s 1,000 HP engine. If you like going across the field slow,
Brandy and Eddie Shores of Shores Ag-Air in Robstown, Texas purchased a new AT-802, delivered by Grant Lane, owner of Lane Aviation in Rosenberg, Texas. Not a Drone Day NZAAA/NZHA Executive Officer, John Anderson, was at Rotortech (convention) in Queensland a couple of weeks ago. A fellow there went to town and purchased a fairly expensive drone. He got the lowdown on starting it and actually flew it out the back of the shop. He returned to the convention and told a few of the lads, “Watch this.” Try as he might the drone wouldn’t start. With great loss of face he rang the shop owner who sold him the drone who in turn asked him where he was. “Twin Waters,” was the response. The shop man advises, “So you are about one kilometer away from Maroochydore Airport and CASA rules say you are not allowed to fly a drone within four. Take it more than 4km away and you’ll find it will work just fine.” Clever huh?
Hope all is well with you. Things are great here. Busy—Bill

Rice farming by air by Bill Lavender According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in 2015, the United States was ranked 12th of 78 countries in the world’s production of rice. The lead country was China with 145.8 million metric tons, compared to the U.S.’s 6.1 million metric tons. There are three major rice producing areas in the U.S.; southeast Texas, Mississippi Delta (Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana) and California’s Sacramento Valley. For many years, the Ag-Cat was the primary ag aircraft of choice for working rice. It still is in many areas, particularly the Sacramento Valley. The demand for a high number of takeoffs and landings each day spreading seed and fertilizer, as well as the need to work from short, unimproved airstrips, makes the AgCat ideally suited for this kind of flying. Richter Aviation is a prime example of
an operation that successfully utilizes the Ag-Cat having started with two A-Models in 1974 as World Agri Air east of Maxwell, California in the heart of the Sacramento Valley’s rice fields. Jon Chaney, Bill Sommerville and Paul Richter formed World Agri Air. Chaney was a rice farmer while Sommerville and Jim Miller (later replaced by Neale Wade) were pilots. Richter managed the company. The next year, Rick Richter started working on the ground crew. In 1979, Rick started flying his apprentice year under the mentorship of Sommerville and Wade. Four years later, Rick left to form Richter Aviation, operating an A-Model Ag-Cat with a 2,000-acre rice base. He and his wife, Brenda, ran the company from home and flew from
Charter Aviation’s base in Williams, California. The Richters later moved the aircraft to Moller Aviation in Maxwell, but still ran the business from home. In 1988, Richter Aviation set up operations at World Agri Air’s base east of Maxwell, operating from there for nine years before buying World Agri Air’s assets and customer base with a lease on the airport property and facilities. Prior to this, Richer Aviation added a 1990 Super B Ag-Cat to better handle the expanding business. With a growing customer base, in 1999, Richter Aviation bought a King Cat from Spain with an R-1820 (1,200 HP) engine. The aircraft came with a 500-gallon hopper, but was

modified to hold 600 gallons with a top expansion. Five years later, this aircraft’s powerplant was converted to a TPE33110 using an Agri-Jet kit. After eleven years of leasing the airport where World Agri Air started 33 years ago, Richter Aviation bought the 300 acres of land and facilities in 2008. Strategically located in the Sacramento Valley, the company works from as many as two dozen airstrips placing the AgCats as close as possible to their work. The Richters also farm the 300 acres, along with an additional 120 acres they have purchased since then. The following year, Rick and Brenda’s son, Nick, started flying for the company. Nick flew the A-Model Ag-Cat his first two seasons, as his dad did 30 years ago from the same airstrip. However, Nick quickly moved up the aircraft ranks, flying a Super B for a short while and then a C-Model Agri-Jet conversion with the TPE331-10 his third year. Richter Aviation’s Ag-Cat fleet consists of two C-Model Agri-Jet conversions with the TPE331-10, another C-Model Agri-Jet conversion with a TPE331 using a -6 gearbox and a -10 power section, both engines rated at approximately 900 SHP. The fourth Ag-Cat in the fleet is a Super B Agri-Jet conversion with a Super -1 engine (TPE331-1 with a -6 power section) rated at approximately 750 SHP.
The fifth Ag-Cat in the fleet this year is a leased A-Model with an R-985 engine. This aircraft will be used to break-in Warren Michael to ag-flying. Warren has been working on the ground crew with Richter Aviation for five years and 2016 is his first year flying ag. There are about 550,000 acres of rice grown in the 100-mile long stretch of the Sacramento Valley. Not surprisingly, 95% of Richter Aviation’s flying is primarily over rice fields, with the business planting and taking care of 40,000 acres in a full water year. A very small amount of wheat is treated. Applications begin with a starter fertilizer of 16-2-0 or 1846-0 at 150 to 200 pounds to the acre. Seeding follows with 150-200 pounds to the acre of mostly medium grain rice seed. For the organic rice growers, the application rate is as high as 300 pounds of seed per acre to help choke out weeds. Dry herbicide applications are made at 5-35 pounds per acre using a variety of chemicals; Cerano, Bolero, Granite GR or League MVP. These applications are for post-emergence of grasses and are applied at the 2nd leaf stage, about 2-3 weeks after planting.
careful considerations have to be made. These applications are highly regulated whereby only 700 acres a day can be treated by air with propanil per county. Additionally, the county is divided into zones where aircraft can and cannot apply propanil. Because of this, Richter Aviation offers ground machine applications, primarily for no-fly zones. All restricted use pesticides have to be ordered by a Pest Control Advisor (PCA). Between the seeding and herbicide work, often an insecticide application of Lambda-Cy or Silencer are required to control tadpole shrimp and rice water weevil. These pests feed on the young shoots of rice and can severely damage the stand. As the season progresses, a top dressing fertilizer is made in late June. This application is typically 21% ammonium sulfate applied at 125-200 pounds per acre. Before the end of the rice season in August, usually, an application of a fungicide will be made to the majority of the acres.
Liquid applications of herbicides are made, too. These are applied at 1015 GPA using 4015 and 4020 flat fan nozzles. When propanil, a postemergent grass herbicide, is required,

Rx Gate System provides variable and constant rates by Bill Lavender Variable rate technology for dry applications utilizing aircraft has been around for about ten years. Pete Jones’ of Air Repair in Cleveland, Mississippi was one of the first to develop a hydraulically driven gate system that can apply variable and constant rates of dry material. As an option, the hydraulic system is also able to operate flaps and the spray valve of the ag-aircraft. There are two basic functions of the Air Repair Rx Gate System: to provide either a constant rate of dry material application or a variable rate dictated by a prescription. The advantages of the Rx Gate System are very evident for a number of ag operators in the Mississippi Delta. Many of these operators have been using the system since the onset. Within a similar time window of ten years, both GPS and aircraft powered by turbine engines went from resistance by ag-operators to where a majority of agoperations are using GPS and turbine powered ag-planes. Such has not yet been the case for the Rx Gate System, yet. AgAir Update decided to learn more about the Rx Gate System, knowing that it is only a matter of time when variable rate applications will become the norm. AgAir Update interviewed several agoperators with extensive experience with the Rx Gate System and prescription dry applications. It found several common denominators that were consistently repeated. Without fail, everyone swore by the unit, saying they could not envision operating without it. All liked the ability to make very precise dry applications, regardless of the groundspeed, in the constant rate mode. None had any maintenance issues and everyone praised the excellent support from Air Repair. The most common application is potash on corn and preplant ground for
soybeans with constant and variable rates varying from 50-300 pounds. When prescriptions are used for variable rate applications, Matt Peterson, located in Memphis, writes the software based on soil samples. Here are comments from ag-operators that do the best job of defining the Air Repair Rx Gate System:

Dixie Dusters / Itta Bena, MS “Ten years ago I saved over $14,000 with a variable rate potash application on 400 acres. Before I trusted the system, I would stand in the field where the application would turn on or off and see just how accurate it was. My yields improved dramatically. In the past, we would put a blanket application of potash, usually about 300 pounds. If the soil samples, which were averaged, called for less, then we would blanket a lesser amount.
“Our business is 66% dry fertilizer. We apply heavy pre-flood rates at 200 - 250 pounds per acre to rice and 200-300

or under fertilizing. As a bonus, as the years went by using variable rate, we found our application rates were going down as the potash built up in the soil. Before, we were typically blanketing 200 pounds per acre, where now we find an 80 pound per acre maintenance dose is common. We use less fertilizer overall and get better yields. “Dixie Dusters bought the first unit in Mississippi. We were able to offer variable rate applications for two years, before other operators started offering the service. We literally flew all over the state. Farmers prepare their fields in the fall and do not want spreader trucks running over and compacting the rows in the spring. Of course, when it is wet, they can’t use the truck. We set our prices by the hour and to be at least as much as the truck. Our fields look like carpet. The applications provide even growth throughout. We take soil samples on a five-acre grid and our prescriptions are written from those samples.“
Brad Ouzts Cleveland Air Service / Cleveland, MS “The unit is simple to use and very well organized. I had been using other hydraulic systems in the past and the technology of the Air Repair system is way ahead of the game! After using the system for the first time I asked myself, “Why hadn’t I done this sooner?” My customers are amazed at what it can do. I think some ag-operators are of the old school and scared to take the plunge to buy one. I’ve had mine for going on four years and love it. It is so easy to use and very accurate.”

Tracy Stokes Stokes Flying Service Marion, AR “I started using the unit this year without any problems. We have not yet used the variable rate option,
but I see a lot of potential for it. The biggest advantage I see so far are the consistent rate. The fields flown up and downwind just look better. I have done some heavy rates, 300 pounds per acre with a 60-foot swath with our Thrush instead of 45 feet. The applications seem to look as good or better. With the standard gate you can’t get out enough material. If I got a new plane tomorrow, I would want another Air Repair system installed.”
Ike Brunetti Shelby Air Service / Shelby, MS “We found we could increase our swath by 20% and get a continuous rate on the windiest days. For our variable rate prescriptions, chemical companies take the soil samples and send to Matt Peterson for the prescription that we can download from the Internet, place on a thumb drive and insert into our Satloc GPS.

“I’ve had the unit for a year and a half and believe it will pay for itself in a couple of seasons just on fuel savings. We remind our customers of the variable rate option and they love it. The system is very durable and extremely easy to use. You never have to adjust the gate when changing from dry to wet. I can’t say enough good about the ability to do continuous rate dry fertilizer. It gives the pilot great confidence on those really windy days.”
The material ran out on the next to last pass being off by only one ton of the 903 tons. We use the system at the prescription level a lot, but it also works great in constant rate on every job. learning the system, its accuracy and durability. I’ve had very few maintenance issues. I’ve been operating both the dry and liquid variable rate features since 2006. “On average I’ve picked up one new user each year, in several cases it’s not a regular customer, since my competitors do not want to make the investment. I haven’t had a customer stop using the technology since they started with it. At first, I marketed the unit by approaching the innovative customers, the respected growers that all the others tend to watch closely to learn. Once I got the snowball formed and rolling, well you know what happens after that…
“The system has had a tremendous impact on my business. It has created a new market that fills gaps in my season that otherwise I would be sitting on the ground. It makes me money.”
Variable and constant rate technology, especially for dry applications, is here to stay. Variable and constant rate technology, especially for dry applications, is here to stay. The pathway to offer grower customers not only savings on their fertilizer costs, but also an increase in yields is readily available. With soil sampling and the Internet, the prescription for a variable rate application is only a computer away using the Rx Gate System by Air Repair. Forward looking ag-operators will take the initiative to apply fertilizer with this system, often at high rate with a wider swath, saving time and money, while creating a new market for their company and providing a better service for their customers. Those applicators that say they don’t have customers wanting prescription applications never will if the service is not in place and available. For farmers that are soil sampling and using ground rigs to apply high rates of fertilizer, an applicator with the Rx Gate System could have that business.

Young aerial topdressing pilot learns lessons by Mike Feeney Part 2—Last month, Mike Feeney described in detail how he survived his first season accident as an aerial topdressing pilot. The following is his view as to what went wrong and why.
Lessons learned It would be difficult to conceive of a more potentially hazardous situation than that described above. Consider the following: A An inexperienced pilot and loader driver. Both just 20 years of age. B Highly hygroscopic fertiliser dumped onto soft wet grass some days prior to spreading. C An undulating airstrip with, not only a fence at the take-off end, but a hedge as well.
D A hopper outlet design which was well streamlined, but considerably smaller than later higher drag configurations. E An upper wind pattern from the nor-west which are known, to the locals and more experienced pilots, to suddenly affect the surface winds with pronounced gustiness. On later reflection, I was most fortunate that the wheel struck the post and pitched the aircraft nose-down. Had it not, I believe that the tailplane would have struck the gate and suffered damage; probably rendering the heavy aircraft uncontrollable. The Cessna 180 and 185 did not have a good survival rate in aerial topdressing accidents. If you feel pressured enough to accept product just dumped on the ground, you must load the higher material first. Clear some ground of grass, preferably adjacent to a bank and move the fertilizer onto it before loading. Trying to mix the wet stuff at an early stage is bound to lead to trouble with poor flow and distribution. If you must carry it, reduce your weights and be absolutely certain that you do not have hung-up material in your hopper; even if it means your loader driver taking a look into

Of course, my serious error was in not asking Pete to reduce the load. The half minute needed to do that simple action would have saved my company much expense and trouble. I did not follow my own unease about the wind conditions and consequently experienced a tailwind gust at just the wrong stage of takeoff. I urge you new chaps to, if uncertain, to sit and watch the windsock for a while to note trends.
The half minute needed to do that simple action would have saved my company much expense and trouble. Permanent fences at the end of aerial topdressing airstrips are absolutely insane. If they are not droppable or temporary, they must be located so as to be below strip level. Otherwise, as per the CAA “Guideline” document, they should be about 180 metres further out from the defined airstrip end. The CAA declined to make this mandatory; however, in the event of a fatal or serious injury occurring as a result of a fence impact, I feel quite certain that officials such as coroners, OSH and ACC

desire to “see the world”, was the continuing battle with some area managers over airstrip standards. Some of us tried to get dangerous fences removed or altered and other nasty airstrips improved or banned. I was rather outspoken and so became an annoyance to my much older area manager. New Zealand lost five more topdressing pilots in 1963; three of them known to myself. By my reckoning, there have now been 140 ag-pilots killed in New Zealand since 1950; a terrible toll indeed for a peace-time operation, the purpose of which is simply to distribute some manure onto some paddocks...has it all been worth it?
officers and, perhaps, District Court judges and various lawyers are going to have the CAA “Guideline” booklet very close to hand! Airstrip owners and aerial agricultural operators would be well advised to heed my words. If you remember nothing else from this memoir piece; note well this: “With overloaded ag. aircraft, a standard height fence at the end of an airstrip reduces the effective operational length by at least 100 metres!” Part of the reason I decided to leave NZ in 1963, along with the very high income tax paid by topdressing pilots and the natural
I guess it all depends on one’s point of view. Federated Farmers would say yes. I think the economic historians would say a definite yes, as the advent of aerial agriculture vastly improved the nation’s productivity and went a long way to solving the most concerning erosion situation. The pilot’s widows and children and parents and friends might well see it rather differently.....But one thing is for sure; of the various types of flight operations I have been engaged in, the ag-aviation role is still the one dearest to my heart. I loved it from when I was a boy watching Ossie James’s and Guy Robertson’s Tiger Moths working and I love it still. I quite regularly dream that I am out there in a Beaver with the hills and valleys rolling beneath me and, as I turn at the end of a sowing run, I look back to see that lovely long white trail that I laid upon our countryside…

The green cross for Colombian agriculture by Bill Lavender With today’s high performance agaircraft, where a 500-gallon hopper is the norm, anything less would seem to be an oddity. Some operations have agaircraft with load capabilities limited to 100-300 gallons, but usually those are rare and the aircraft are used for speciality applications. A single Pawnee, Ipanema or C-188 operator finds it difficult to treat enough hectares in a season to support the infrastructure of a full-time flying service. Often, operations are formed with smaller aircraft, but quickly add more or move into a larger machine. Finding a multi-aircraft operator successfully utilizing the smaller agaircraft is challenging. The exception is Brazil where there are several large fleets of Ipanema aircraft. This is driven as much as anything by favorable lending terms and low cost ethanol for fuel. There are always exceptions in the agaviation business. A methodology that works for one operation may not work for another. However, more than 50 successful years in business speaks for itself. Sanidad Vegetal Cruz Verde is a Colombian company with 11 PA-25 Pawnees and two Cessna C-188s that is very successful in the face of drought and political changes.
Sanidad Vegetal Cruz Verde was formed in the early 1960s by Hans Klotz, a German coffee buyer working in Colombia and Jamie Zorroza, a Spaniard who farmed rice in Colombia. Like the Swiss Red Cross emblem, Sanidad Vegetal Cruz Verde is the “green cross” for agriculture in Colombia. When World War II started, Klotz was buying coffee in Colombia for his native country, Germany. He decided to stay in Colombia and began growing bananas in the northern region of Santa Marta. In the early 1950s, Klotz partnered with Zorroza to grow rice south of Santa Marta in Ibagué, a rice-growing region of Colombia. In the early 1960s, Klotz and Zorroza met an American ag pilot/mechanic, William Robert (Bob) Griebling, who was flying in the area and bought an PA-25 B aircraft to fly for them. Seeing the need for more service in the area in June 1965, they bought two more PA25Bs and founded Sanidad Vegetal. They adopted the green cross for their logo and namesake that is on all their aircraft; the Red Cross for Colombian crops. Over the years, Bob Griebling managed the company, as well as flying its aircraft and maintaining them. He grew the original fleet from three Pawnee PA-25
William Robert “Bob” Griebling with his El Cacique (The Chief) A-model 600 HP AgCat, circa 1985. B-models with 235 HP engines, to several Pawnees PA-25s, Pawnee Braves and an A-model Ag-Cat with a PWC R-1340 (600 HP) that he flew. In 1991, Bob was captured by Communist guerrillas and held for ransom. Unfortunately, he was killed in the rescue attempt. William “Billy” Robert Griebling, Jr. had been flying alongside his father at the time of the kidnapping. Upon his father’s death, he took over as chief pilot for the next five years before retiring, but not until he had started the transition from larger ag-aircraft to a more efficient fleet of Pawnee PA-25s. This was due to rice fields becoming more numerous, but much smaller, often only 20-25 hectares (50-60 acres). The clientele were changing to four major growers that

made up 65% of the flying, while 110120 growers were the remaining 35%. Upon Billy’s retirement from active flying at Sanidad Vegetal in 2000, Hans Klotz’s son, Andres, became General Manager for the company with his agricultural engineer background. In 2000, Hans Klotz passed away, while his partner, Jaime Zorroza, is still alive and actively farming a very large rice farm at 96 years old.
The primary crop Sanidad Vegetal treats is rice, making up about 80% of the flying. The company aircraft also treat maize, about 15%, and a small amount of soybeans, about 5% of the work. The aircraft are flown year round in this equatorial region with two rainy and two dry seasons, The first wet season starts in late March with applications of pre-germinated rice seeds and ends with harvest in early July. The second rainy season starts in late September, seeding
rice and ends with harvest in January starting the first dry season. Normally, rice is planted by ground machines, but if the area is wet, growers call in the aircraft. The usual application rate for rice seed by air is 200 kg/ha (200 lb/a), compared to 120 kg/ha (120 lb/a) by ground machine. The Pawnees use a Transland spreader for the dry applications. A small amount of herbicide work is flown using

due to either heat, humidity, wind, or some combination of. Dry applications continue after liquid applications. Four years ago, Sanidad Vegetal bought a nearby operation in Agua Blanca that was using two C-188s. Sanidad Vegetal is not approved by the Colombian Aero Civil to operate C-188s, but hopes to be certified to use the C-188s in 2016. Until that time, four of the eleven Pawnees operate from Agua Blanca with 12 support and maintenance employees and four pilots based there. The remaining seven Pawnees and pilots are based in Ibagué with 25 support, maintenance and administrative employees.

CP nozzles applying at 15-20 gallons per hectare (6-8 GPA). Rice typically receives three aerial fertilizations with varying rates of 100 kg/ha, 200 kg/ ha and 300 kg/ha. Additionally, three fungicide applications are made at 15-20 gal/ha. Rice fields are rotated with corn and soybean crops. Sanidad Vegetal employs 10 pilots to fly its 11 Pawnees. They are required by the Colombian Aero Civil to have a minimum of 100 hours of commercial flight time and a minimum of 50 hours of ag-flying logged. Normally, Colombian ag-pilots are required to retire from ag-flying at 65 years old. However, due to a shortage of qualified Colombian ag-pilots, the government has extended the retirement age to 68 years old. The 11 Pawnees operate from 24 airstrips throughout Colombia with the furtherest apart being about 150 kilometers (90 miles). Seven of the airstrips are paved and strategically located and provide stores of parts. The flying day starts around 6:00 a.m. with spraying that stops around 9-10 a.m.
Sanidad Vegetal’s fleet of Pawnees have been converted from their original D-model configuration with wingtip fuel tanks, to C-models with fuselage fuel tanks. The aircraft have 260 HP, O-540 Lycoming engines with high compression pistons and constant speed props. The fuselages have been converted from fabric to aluminum. Pilots prefer the C-model version of the PA-25 because of its performance and better flying characteristics than the D-model. “For our area with its small fields, the Pawnee is the most efficient aircraft,” says Andres. “We converted D-models to C-models because our pilots like the way they fly.”
1. The symbolic “green cross” is found on all of Sanidad Vegetal Cruz Verde’s 11 Pawnee aircraft; the Red Cross for Colombian agriculture. 2. Sanidad Vegetal’s Pawnees have the 180-gallon “rice” hoppers that can carry more volume, such as seed and fertilizer, than the traditional 150-gallon Pawnee hopper. 3. Sanidad Vegetal’s Pawnees have exposed lower fuselage tubing and lower rudder tubing to prevent fertilizer accumulation that if covered would lead to hidden corrosion. 4. Elevator control cable attach points are viewable through plexiglas inspection plates as an added measure of safety in a corrosive environment. 5. Loading Pawnee with rice fertilizer from fixed, concrete loading ramp.

Sanidad Vegetal can rebuild their Pawnees from the ground up. Here is a fuselage jig and the mold for fiberglass wingtips held by Billy Griebling. Up until recently, the company had a complete engine shop and rebuilt their O-540 Lycoming engines. However, the Colombian Aero Civil has imposed new, restrictive regulations that make it impractical to have an engine shop. Four to five engines are bought and imported from the U.S. annually.
Ibagué-based employees.
A select number of Sanidad Vegetal’s Pawnees are outfitted with Satloc GPS units. Some growers prefer to not use GPS on their fields. However, the company’s four major clients require GPS-equipped Pawnees with CP nozzles for more accurate applications.
Sanidad Vegetal Cruz Verde has remained a stable ag-aviation company with its 11-Pawnee fleet working from 24 airstrips in the Ibagué region riceland of Colombia. The company has withstood political change and today deals with a widespread drought. The company operates well

Mystery aircraft identified Two Taylorcraft Austers, as they were advertised during the 1950s: The J1/B Aiglet proved to be popular for aerial topdressing in New Zealand for several reasons. They were a USA design, but made in the UK under a US license. US Dollars were hard to buy but UK Pounds were easier to locate. UK Austers were fairly cheap, could be used from paddocks and were simple to maintain. Many were made in England for wide use during WWII. Many of them were fitted with 4 cylinder Lycoming engines, but all of the J1/B series used the DeHaviland Gipsy Major in line engine of 130 HP.For ag-flying work some were fitted with the 145 HP model.
in MPH, which we used back then. As a guess at maximum weight, I think the stall speed with zero-flap was about 45 MPH, the climb speed was maybe 70 MPH and the cruise around 90 MPH. I cannot recall that we bothered very much with speeds. We just flew them in the best way we could.
with 130 HP and a wooden prop was approximately 400 pounds. With 130 BH, the J1/B carried a payload of about 5 to 6 cwt (560-672 pounds) depending on the density of the fertilizer; just a tad more than 50% of a Cessna 180’s maximum load.
But, apart from the noise, the cold gales, hard seats and funny flaps, it was actually rather likeable so.
The Auster was also quite a handy little spraying machine. I did only a few hundred hours in various Austers and hard-pressed to remember its speeds

AT-602: Trim your overhead. You’ll reduce costs and increase profit margins when you scale a multi-plane operation down to a single-plane operation. Air Tractor’s AT-602 makes it an easy choice. The big 630-gallon payload moves you up to high volume production, reduces loads, saves time and helps trim operating expenses compared with two smaller planes. The AT-602 is the ideal solution for 5-gallon work on center-pivot circles. Step it up with an AT-602. Visit your Air Tractor dealer.
