Pet Peeves

here are two pet peeves that I have harbored for a long time, and wanted to comment upon. In full disclosure, these peeves do not relate to agaviation, at least not directly. But, they do reflect upon the greenwashing of Americans and to a great degree the rest of the world; plastic vs paper drinking straws and pasture-raised eggs.

Yes, you read it correctly, pasture-raised eggs. It is beyond me how you “raise” eggs, maybe “hatch”?

The paper versus plastic drinking straw debacle is an interesting one. Evidently, an over zealous tree-hugger finally hit a nerve with the idea that plastic drinking straws were a detriment to the environment compared to bio-degradable paper drinking straws. I’ll drop the “drinking” part of the straw description for editorial efficiency.

Actually, there is only one manufacturer of paper straws, Aardvark Straws based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. That’s probably because up until recently, plastic straws ruled, although Aardvark was growing yearly. According to a USA Today report, last year the company saw a 5,000% increase in sales, literally billions of straws. The company was bought last year by the Hoffmaster Group that manufacturers disposable tableware.

Obviously, this will be a good fit for Hoffmaster which plans to jump on the environmental bandwagon, expanding sales of paper straws as plastic straw sales decline.

The paradox here is the environmentalists want to ban plastic straws for the very, very few of the billions used that might end up in the ocean and become wedged in a sea creature, primarily the turtle. I can sympathize with that, I like turtles, especially turtle soup. But, to change an entire industry for what may affect a few turtles?

Back to the paradox, now the environmentalists want to replace plastic straws with paper straws.

Hmmm…. How does that happen? Trees! Gee, will we be cutting down the precious trees that people are constantly trying to save? Do you ever get an email that says in its signature at the end, “Think before you print this email. Save a tree?”

All this could be for ag-aviation. If more trees are going to be needed to manufacture paper straws, then evidently there’s going to be a greater need for aerial applications to help raise these trees. Don’t forget to tell your friends with the sententious email signature that trees are a renewable resource and raised by tree farmers for the explicit reason to manufacture paper products.

Oh well…

My second pet peeve, being pasture-raised eggs, has really left me scratching my head. How do you “raise” an egg, maybe a chicken, but an egg? Based on the egg cartons’ greenwashing labeling (made of paper, by the way), the chickens are allowed to roam in pastures (free range) alfresco-style (open, free air). Does this mean no chicken coops and the chickens can “fly” wherever they desire?

Whenever I read a reference on a restaurant menu about eggs from free-range chickens, I chuckle. I have this mental picture of people running around in a pasture full of chickens on some super-duper egg hunt. I bet it is a free-for-all at Easter time! Maybe the egg company can feed continued page 9

Hello Bill, I really enjoyed the article about J.O. Dockery. As a kid growing up in Stuttgart, Arkansas in the 1950s, I remember him well. J.O.’s first wife, Irene, was my fourth grade teacher for the last semester and of course we all got to see his famous pilot’s license signed by Orville Wright. Dockery Airport was an easy bike ride from the middle of town, so that was always a good adventure. I grew up with all of his grandchildren.

When the book Low and Slow came out, Dock just happened to stop in at Helena one day and I had him sign it.

Sadly, the book burned up when we lost the shop. I will probably give this edition of AgAir Update to his grandson next time I am in Stuttgart.

Women’s Day Just to add, there is no “International Men’s Day”; this “day” thing is a girlie thing.

Fumes vented, let me insist that, in my opinion, the real cause for the increase in fatalities is the higher speed of the more modern ag-planes. As kinetic energy increases to the square of speed, the 27% speed increase in a 140-mph ag-plane over a 110-mph one turns out to a 61% increase in kinetic energy to be dissipated by the pilot’s body when the turbo plane hits something!

Although I don’t want to sound like a safety highway patrolman advertisement saying “speed kills”, I’m betting the agplane with the least fatalities is the old Grumman Ag-Cat tugging along at 90 mph (just 66% of the kinetic energy of the 110 mph airplane).

Yes, I’m siding with Alan McCracken on his “slow ag-plane” article in last month’s AAU; besides less drift, we would have less fatalities.

Also, youth is often filled with “piss and vinegar” believing they are bulletproof.

However, NAAA research points out the leading cause ag-aircraft accidents is lack of experience in type aircraft, regardless of previous experience in other aircraft. Survivability is another issue where speed does become the dominating factor. But, if the accident does not happen in the first place, then speed is no longer an issue!

Really, has it come to this? Are people so gullible to think just because the chicken supposedly runs around in a pasture and the eggs are “hand-tended” that it makes any difference in the quality of the egg? One company touts the hens have 108+ square feet of free range. Let’s see, 43,560 square feet in an acre would mean there is 403 hens running around on that acre. A small 10-acre pasture would have 4,030 hens on it! What if they all group up in one corner where the feeders and waters are located? Does that cause a problem?

Paper straws and pasture-raised eggs is the epitome of greenwashing gone wild. Of course, greenwashing in itself is shameful. Maybe the ag-aviation industry should come up with its own form of greenwashing. It sure seems to sell good with the general public!

Twin County Air-Ag

In 2017, Hurricane Harvey originated from a fast-paced westwardmoving tropical wave that emerged from Africa over the eastern Atlantic Ocean. After initially breaking apart in the Caribbean Sea, the remnants of Harvey continued to produce significant convection as it traversed the Caribbean Sea and Yucatán Peninsula. The system reached the Bay of Campeche in the Gulf of Mexico on August 23, 2017 and soon became Hurricane Harvey on August 24, 2017.

On August 26, 2017, the hurricane made landfall on San Jose Island, just east of Rockport, Texas with sustained winds of 130 mph. The hurricane made a second landfall on the Texas mainland, at Rockport, three hours later in a slightly weakened state. Harvey’s center drifted back southeast, ultimately re-emerging into the Gulf of Mexico on August 28, 2017. Once offshore, deep convection persisted north of the cyclone’s center near the Houston metropolitan area along a stationary front, resulting in several days of record-breaking rainfall.

The flooding was immediate and intense.

The dry hangar floor of Twin County Air-Ag, Inc was soon inundated with flood waters mixed with petroleum and waste. The operation’s four aircraft and five support vehicles were submerged or partially submerged after more than 60” of rainfall. Jeffery Leger and his family could do nothing but wait until the waters receded.

Jeffery Leger was born in 1953 in Beaumont, Texas, not too far from where the flooding occurred. Jeffery is one of eight children. He grew up working on the farm alongside his brother, and as a boy would watch the Stearmans of the era fly amongst his father’s rice fields, often dreaming of becoming an ag-pilot. At 15, Jeffery’s dad took him to M & M Air Service and asked if they could put him to work. For the next few years, Jeffery flagged fields, cleaned floors and repaired wings.

After graduating high school, Jeffery and his best friend, Ricky Schroeder, took off for flying school at Ed Boardman in Fort Worth, Texas. Jeffery returned to begin his first ag season in 1973.

After 10 successful seasons with M & M Flying Service, Jeffery left and began flying closer to his home and over the following 10 years worked his way into his own operation. In 1991, Jeffery partnered with four local rice farmers and broke ground as Twin County Air-Ag, Inc. with an Air Tractor AT-30 (later converted to a 401). Two years later, Jeffery bought out his grower-partners and purchased his second aircraft and added an additional pilot, Glenn Menard. Glenn continued to fly for Jeffery until his retirement in 2012. Also in 1997, an AT-402 was added to the Twin County Air-Ag fleet. This would be Twin County AirAg’s first turbine aircraft. In 2000, Twin County Air-Ag added a third aircraft, a B-Model Ag Cat for Jeffery’s son, Jeffery Leger Jr., (Little Jeff), to begin his ag pilot career.

Jeffery Leger worked 44 seasons to build his business with his family. In 2016, Twin County Air-Ag, Inc. was at the peak of its operations. Bank notes were almost paid off, business was steadily increasing and the company was expanding.

However, 2017 had other plans.

On February 11, 2017, Jeffery’s lifelong friend, Ricky Schroeder, (who had been flying for Jeffery) was involved in a non-aviation related accident (a

fall) and succumbed to his injuries. This left a major void for Leger as he and Ricky began their ag flying career together so many seasons ago.

In April of the same year, Jeffery was flying alongside his son, Little Jeff, applying herbicide on rice. Little Jeff had just departed with a full load, all-the-while Jeffery was right behind him in the Air Tractor. As Jeffery was about to depart, four words broke the squelch on the radio. “Twin-County, I’m going down”.

No other transmissions came from Little Jeff and his Ag-Cat. The next sight, as Leger broke ground in the Air Tractor, was a large column of black smoke on the horizon; he feared the worst.

As he approached the downed aircraft from the air, Jeffery Leger was prepared to dump the entire load to extinguish the flames to save his son. Luckily, Little Jeff was already outside the wreckage. He had suffered an in-flight fire and managed to get the aircraft on the ground and escape with his life. (See sidebar story on Little Jeff’s in-flight fire on page 15).

Little Jeff suffered from severe smoke inhalation, as well as minor first burns. The close call and his injuries saw Little Jeff sit the remaining of the season out. As the 2017 season was coming to a close, who, according to Jeffery “Good Riddance”, the National Hurricane Center issued a Hurricane Watch for Port Mansfield and San Luis Pass, Texas.

re-emerged as a hurricane and storm surge warning at 1500 UTC. It was the middle of the night and there was no time to go to the airport to secure or remove the aircraft. The family watched as long as they could on the security cameras, in pure disbelief, as the storm waters seeped into the hangar. When the power finally was disrupted, they feared that 2017 had put the proverbial nail in the coffin.

On August 31, 2017 the last tropical storm warning was discontinued. The remnants of Hurricane Harvey were nothing more than a few clouds off the coast of Louisiana. All anyone could do was wait for the waters to recede. And recede they ➤

The in-flight fire originated it the engine compartment, and Jeff Leger (Little Jeff) managed to put the aircraft on the ground and escape with minor injuries and first degree burns.

“Twin County, I’m going down” was the only message that Jeffery Leger, Jr. could transmit as thick, putrid black smoke filled the cockpit of his Ag-Cat. Jeffery Jr. (Little Jeff), had just taken a full load of herbicide, and broke ground minutes before his dad, Jeffery Leger, Sr. was to take off.

The Ag-Cat climbed and turned left back over the airstrip, on the way to one of the many rice fields that Twin County Air-Ag serviced during the spring of 2017. Little Jeff was starting his seventh season; the Ag-Cat had been reliable and good to him.

On the ferry, Little Jeff noticed a slight smell of smoke. Wondering why the farmers were burning their fields, he made a slight course correction to get out of the irritant. Almost instantaneously, he noticed he was losing oil pressure. By that time, thick black smoke was pouring into the cockpit.

Little Jeff immediately opened his windows to be met with flames coming alongside the aircraft.

He slammed the windows shut again, convinced he was going to suffocate and lose consciousness.

Little Jeff was headed directly towards trees, no more than 200 feet AGL. He dumped the load and got enough altitude to clear the trees. Amazingly, the engine was still making power. He reached for the engine controls and discovered they were all melted. Nothing worked. He vomited. He couldn’t see and the heat was almost unbearable. Little Jeff managed to shut the fuel off and the engine died.

A quick glimpse through the smoke saw a pasture and he aimed for the middle. The aircraft touched down and Little Jeff managed to extricate himself from the cockpit and clear the aircraft before it came to a stop. He escaped with his life, severe smoke inhalation and minor first burns. His dad circling above him.

Continued did, leaving behind mildew and according to Ashley Leger, “the most God-awful smell you can imagine”, the Legers began their clean-up. It was an emotional return to the airport for Jeffery to see 40+ years of work covered in storm debris, mud and dead crawfish, but a resolve was born that saw the entire operation rebuilt, repaved and rebound.

The first order of business was to establish a temporary office at the home of Adam, Jeffery’s youngest son, and Ashley, Adam’s wife. Here, Ashley ran the day to day operations of Twin County Air-Ag, and coordinated the upcoming season.

Adam Leger, who runs the ground operations division of Twin County Air-Ag, was busy coordinating his ground crew for the clean up and rebuilding of facilities. The operation utilized a John Deere JDR4038 to augment the aerial spraying side before the flooding. Immediately after the hurricane, the ground rig was utilized to move people and resources throughout the city and county where traditional vehicles and boats could not.

Jeffery, Adam and Little Jeff set out to replace the aircraft.

A neighbor had leased their 2005 AT-502 for immediate use, and Jeffery decided to purchase the aircraft. In late February of 2018, as the new season was about to begin, The Legers found themselves in desperate need of additional aircraft. They read in AgAir Update two aircraft advertised by Lane Aviation in

Rosenberg, Texas, and made the drive to check them out.

Closer inspection of the two aircraft, an AT-602 and AT-502, showed they perfectly fit the bill for replacement aircraft. Little Jeff called the bank on the spot and the two men shook hands with Lane to seal the deal. The Twin County Air-Ag bounce back was in full swing.

The 2018 season began and the operation was very close to a full recovery from a devastating 2017. The first of the season was worked with only one support truck. The first and the last of the five replacement trucks arriving between March and April of 2018. Twin County Air-Ag moved back into their newly renovated office and hangar in March 15, 2018.

Today, Twin County Air-Ag, Inc. is back in full-swing, better than ever. They are operating four turbine Air Tractors, two AT-602s and two AT-502s. Dwayne Williams, who started with Jeffery in 2011, continues to fly for the company. Joel Martin came onboard in 2014 and also is an integral part of the operation. Twin County Air-Ag also has seven vital ground crew members that keep the aircraft flying. The support truck fleet is new and hangar and office space is functional and better than ever. Little Jeff is back in the air, while Adam is busy coordinating ground operations and Ashley is making everything work like it should. The Legers’ fly almost yearround now, from rice fields to pasture work, a bounce-back for sure.

Whatever Happened to the Ag-2?

Editor’s comment: Established in 1946, Transland designed and manufactured products for the airframe and electronics industries including components for the P-51 Mustang, T-6 Trainer, F-86 Sabre and F-100 Super Sabre. Transland Company became a division of Hi-Shear Rivet Tool Company in 1957 and was renamed Transland Aircraft. Both Transland Aircraft and Hi-Shear were directed

by George Wing, president and chief designer for Transland Aircraft.

Transland Company entered the ag aviation field in 1951 with its introduction of aerial application equipment. Conrad Barlow, an Englishman who served in the New Zealand air force during World War II and later while working for Smith, Kirkpatrick Company in New York (export sales), was hired by Transland as Export Sales Manager for the all new Ag-2.

Barlow and his family packed their belongings and moved to California. Later, Barlow bought Transland Aircraft from Hi-Shear, moved it to

nearby Harbor City, California and changed the name to Transland Corporation. From there, Barlow built a business known worldwide for outfitting agricultural aircraft with liquid and dry application systems.

Today, Transland is known for its innovative ideas and willingness to “invent” new and better systems for the ag aviation industry. Recently, their commitment to the industry was highlighted with the purchase of CP Products and SATLOC. Although the Ag-2 met its demise after only three prototypes were built, Transland Corporation, then under Conrad Barlow’s guidance, has become a common ag airstrip name throughout the world.

The following is a brief history of the Ag-2. The information was taken from John Hales’ sales book, The Development of Agricultural Aviation and the Transland Ag-2 Airplane.

The Ag-2’s basic design included the best features of the experimental Ag-1, the first airplane specifically designed for the purpose of distributing agricultural materials. The Ag-1 was developed in 1949-50 at Texas A&M Aircraft Research Center. Its design was directed by Fred E. Weick. The aircraft was powered by a 225 hp Continental engine. It carried a 1200 lb. payload; the fuselage dust hopper was 27 cu.ft. and wing tanks had a 150 U.S. gallon capacity.

From the best design features of the Ag-1 project, following the recommendations of the Crash Injury Research Unit at Cornell University’s Medical College, and from its own extensive research program and design studies, Transland selected the Ag-2 configuration as an optimum answer to the highly complex problems and economic needs of the agricultural aviation industry. Emphasis was placed on a greater payload capacity to increase the earning potential and at the same time design a structure suitable to fabrication and assembly techniques of volume production.

Airframe construction for the Ag-2 began in 1954. The first prototype flight was October 11, 1956 with a P&W R-985, 450 hp engine at the Torrance Municipal Airport. While ship #2 was being built, ship #1 underwent flight testing for C.A.R. Part III regulations certification.

A major brush fire broke out in December 1956 in the Malibu district of the Santa Monica Mountains giving the Ag-2 its first real service test. Transland offered the services of the Ag-2 and its operating personnel to help control the blaze. During the fire, with its 2,000 lb. load capability, the Ag-2 dropped more than 25 tons of fire retardant.

The first appearance of the Ag-2 as an agricultural airplane came with an invitation from the Texas Agricultural Aviation Operator’s (now the TAAA) annual meeting at College Station, Texas in January, 1957. Chief Designer George Wing and the engineers at Transland decided the Ag-2 would be better outfitted with the P&W R-1340, 600 hp engine. This was after a trip to Canada by Wing to observe the greatest single aerial application project of its time to be undertaken. The seven-➤

The Ag-2 was an experiment in aerotechnology. Every aspect of it was engineered from the ground up, with productivity and safety foremost in the minds of its engineers.

Note the Transland pump and dump gate of that day. The booms were mounted in the flap and aileron gaps with drop tubes for the nozzles. Even the fixed gear legs had fairings.

year project, Operation Budworm, was organized to control spruce budworm infestations in the vast forest of New Brunswick and Quebec.

The change to the 600 hp engine increased the Ag-2’s payload from 2,000 to 3,000 lbs.

The handling characteristics of the Ag-2 were enhanced. Also, the better availability at that time of the R-1340, with its low purchase price of $3,000 new or $1,200 military surplus with less than 200 hours, made it a wise engine choice for the Ag-2. The first flight of ship #2 with its 600 hp engine was June 3, 1958.

Transland’s engineering flight test program was conducted by Robert A. Masterson, Transland’s Chief Test Pilot and USAF experimental aircraft flight test pilot. June 24, 1958 the Civil Aeronautics Administration awarded Type Certificate #4A20 to Transland Aircraft for the Ag2’s conformance to C.A.R. Part III Regulations.

To ascertain the Ag-2’s suitability to a wide variety of agricultural application conditions, Wing made a world tour during 1958. His travels took him to Turkey, Egypt, Sudan, Kenya, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii. He evaluated many types of ag aircraft, loading devices, applicating techniques, local flying and maintenance problems and, last, but not the least, the potential world market for the Transland Ag-2.

Early in 1959 the Ag-2 was flown to Forest Grove, Oregon where the USDA Agricultural Research Station was located. Low level flight tests were conducted by the USDA staff to determine the best spray boom arrangement and nozzle location for the most uniform spray coverage. The boom arrangement for the Ag-2 was positioned in the aileron and flap gaps with individual tubes extending into the slipstream for each nozzle.

Pilotage during these tests was by Max Hartely, Transland’s chief engineering pilot who also served as chief pilot for Operation Budworm.

In April of 1959, after the Oregon test flights, both Ag-2’s, ships #1 and #2, were displayed and demonstrated at the World Congress of Flight in Las Vegas, Nevada. At this time, the Congress was considered to be the greatest air show of its type ever held, with government officials, industry and representatives from 44 nations.

Returning from the Congress, ship #2 was lost.

During a fuel stop at Riverside, California, a local pilot wanted to fly the aircraft. While attempting a turn maneuver, he stalled, destroying the Ag-2, although he walked away from the wreckage.

Shortly after the remaining Ag-2 returned to Torrance, ship #3 was built and flown to Panama to spread fertilizer over banana plantations.

Against the advice of Transland, a local pilot with no Ag-2 experience crashed the aircraft during an overloaded take off, stalling while trying to climb.

Neither ship #2 or #3 were sold aircraft.

However, ship #1 was sold to Charles Chalking of Paysandu, Uruguay. A famous doctor, who owned a sugar plantation in Paysandu that Chalking serviced, flew to the U.S. and bought the last remaining Ag-2 for $25,000. The doctor, with a passenger, flew the Ag-2 back to Uruguay. Chalking operated the aircraft until the early 1970s when he replaced it with Ag Cats.

Chalking’s operation used unimproved strips that were often short and soft. Thus, the need for the short field capabilities of the Ag Cat. The last remaining Ag-2 passed though several hands over the next 25 years while it was in Uruguay. Finally, it was pretty much abandoned in a hangar in Triente y Tres, Uruguay. This is ➤

The original Ag-1, and initially the Ag-2, carried the spray liquid in the four tanks of the center section (the fuel tanks were in the wings). The problem of plumbing four tanks for liquid application proved impractical. It should be realized that when the Ag-1 was originally designed, back in the late 40s and early 50s, the major chemical carrier was dust and liquid spray was just coming into its own.

where Conrad Barlow, after so many years, finally found the Ag-2 in July of 1999 (see AAU September 1999, Mystery Ag Plane).

Why didn’t the Ag-2 make it as an ag plane?

What were the problems with this aircraft that had been so diligently researched to produce the best ag plane of its day? One must remember in the late 1950s, Stearmans could be bought for $5,000.

Ag Cat had been trying to sell their 220 hp model for $18,000, but couldn’t and finally lowered the price to $14,000. The Ag-2 sold for $25,000.

Smaller and bi-wing aircraft were in vogue at the time, with Pawnees, Cubs, Stearmans and Ag Cats the mainstay of the industry.

The wing of the Ag-2 was a 21% airfoil (most ag aircraft are 16%) that resulted in a very thick, high drag wing, subject to stalling. Maybe that was why #’s 2 and 3 were so easily lost. And,

most importantly, Transland president and chief designer, George Wing, lost interest in all ag aircraft. His new attraction was the Derringer, a high performance sport aircraft.

Maybe the Ag-2 was slightly ahead of its time.

It doesn’t look that much different than today’s mono-wing ag aircraft powered by an R-1340.

However, the Ag-2 will never be, as technology has surely passed it by.

At the beginning of 2019, Brazil’s SINDAG (national ag-aviation association) reported there were 2,194 registered agricultural aircraft operating in the country. In 2018, 79 aircraft were added to the fleet representing a 3.74% increase over fleet numbers in 2017. The fleet grew in 2017 by 1.54% (32 aircraft).

The report reflected an increase of commercial ag-aviation companies from 244 to 253 in 2018, up 3.7%. This represents 1,461 aircraft (66.59%).

Private companies (farmers/cooperatives) increased 3.5% from 565 in 2017 to 585 in 2018. This represents 709 aircraft (32.32%) of the Brazilian fleet. The remaining 24 aircraft are involved in government, instruction (six CAVAG agricultural pilot training schools) and firefighting.

There are also 12 helicopters within the fleet.

According to SINDAG’s Executive Director Gabriel Colle, data was supplied to the association by consultant Eduardo Araújo, owner of Agrotec.

Ag aviation was first started in Brazil in 1947, more than 72 years ago. Mr. Araújo began working in ag-aviation in 1960 and was involved in the formation of SINDAG in 1992, serving on the board of directors.

Brazil has 26 states and its Federal District Brasilia, of those 23 are states with agricultural aviation. Those that had the largest fleet growth were Mato Grosso, which received 30 aircraft in 2018 with a total of 494, Mato Grosso do Sul with 11 more aircraft, Goiás with 10 more, Pará with eight and Maranhão with six aircraft. Mato Grosso has the most farmer/co-op owned companies with 233 versus 31 commercial operations.

The second largest state with ag-aircraft is Rio Grande do Sul with 427 aircraft. It is the southernmost state in Brazil with Mato Grosso being in the central western part of the country.

Rio Grande do Sul did not add any aircraft to its fleet in 2018. The state has 114 ag-aviation companies.

São Paulo state has the third largest fleet with 317 ag-planes and helicopters, three more than the previous year. The state is second in number of

companies with 85.

Goiás state is fourth in the ranking of the Brazilian states, with 287 aircraft and 87 companies.

The leading Brazilian agricultural aircraft, the Ipanema, is built by Brazil’s Embraer representing 58% of the fleet. The Ipanema was first built in the 1970s and in 2015 the seventh generation Ipanema (EMB203) was launched. In 2004, the first certified General Aviation aircraft to operate on 100% alcohol (ethanol) was the Ipanema EMB202A. However, there has been a significant growth of U.S. turboprop ag-aircraft. Today, they make up 18.09% of the Brazilian ag-aircraft fleet.

Of the 79 new ag-aircraft added to the fleet in 2018, 57 were turboprop powered aircraft. As a comparison, in the last 10 years the Brazilian ag-aircraft fleet grew by 51.6%, but in the last five years the turboprop fleet has increased by 73.8%, led by Air Tractor and accounting for 16.18% of the entire Brazilian ag-aircraft fleet.

TRUTH IN FLIGHT

Teaching the Children Unexpectedly, I recently received an invitation to lecture on aviation in a school in the United States for children from 5 to 7 years old. It was a project that did not involve any payment, but something I made a point of doing. Communication is a passion that I cultivate as a hobby. Believing in this way, I can contribute so that more people understand and respect our activity, agricultural aviation.

With great joy (and a little coldness in my belly), I faced the challenge of giving those children the opportunity to know more about what our planes do that spend hours flying over crops. I have learned that communication is an interesting thing indeed. For example, if I am going to speak to a group made up of corporate managers, the approach is totally different from when I speak to a group of typical workers, or neighbors. With children, we must also find the right angle to approach.

I arrived at the school and was introduced to the class. I sat in a little chair facing them, all of them surrounding me and staring with their curious eyes with an endless list of questions. I told them little by little what a pilot does and the different jobs in aviation.

With simple language and sometimes teaching a new word (they adored the terms “lift” and “aerodynamics”), I explained that our planes take care of large and small farms. I said we can put several things in the airplane’s tank.

That sometimes it is something like a “vitamin” to help the crop grow beautiful and healthy. I explained that when the crop gets sick, we deliver it medicine. Of course, I spoke of the various types of flying our industry does, such as firefighting and A 28 | agairupdate.com

seeding of forests.

Some of the students wanted to know how we proceeded in case of an emergency, did we have reserve airplanes in case of defects, the size of the engine, if we fly in the rain, if we touch our hands in the clouds ....

I explained everything I could. The teacher was choosing between the raised hands, who would be the next to ask. One of the little girls used crutches to get around. I do not know what happened to her little legs, but I put a smile on my face and told the class, “Did you know that people with special physical conditions can also fly?” Then, I told them that here in the United States we have a great agricultural pilot who is deaf. I also told the story of the aviator who does not have her arms, but flies an airplane adapted for her. And they replied, “Wow! Really?”.

It was exciting to see how receptive and honest the children were. My commitment there was to tell the truth. Among the explanations that I gave the children, I made it a point to emphasize the importance of the agricultural pilot to do his work with discipline, complying with rules and respecting the limits of both the machine and those determined by the product labels.

It was an unforgettable experience that I

hope to repeat many times over. I like this thing of demystifying aviation, especially agricultural aviation. I love it when I have the opportunity to speak, whether it’s for the kindergarten children, civic clubs or my column in AgAir Update.

Some growers, as well as a portion of society, still have a stereotyped image of the agricultural pilot. I do not mind at all that the grower is at the airstrip, checking the dosage of the products and making sure that everything is going well. I understand and respect that farming is often all that a family has. Sometimes they come halfshy, just waiting for an opportunity to better understand our work. If we are willing to explain, we have the opportunity to create a relationship of mutual trust and collaboration.

Some of my growers in Brazil come to the airstrip with cheese bread and soda. It is their way of saying, “I trust you. I like your work!”. So really, my mission is to be able to speak, to whomever, that we are here not only for the money, but for the passion that we have for ag-flying. Before we are pilots, we are people, parents and mothers and also consumers of the crops we care for.

a grower arrived at an airstrip that I was flying off of in Minas Gerais in the middle of a busy day spraying. He commented, “These guys are very brave.” His grower friend replied, “In that plane there is not a guy. It’s a girl!” The grower’s friend did not believe it until I took off my helmet.

What Spray Volume is Necessary to Provide Good Coverage?

The general belief among most agronomists, technical staff and university professors is the spray volume needs to be adjusted according to the area of the leaves i.e., the foliar index. Many even go so far as to calculate that while a young recently emerged crop could be sprayed with only one gal/acre, it is necessary to increase the spray volume accordingly as the crop grows. A similar comment was made at the recent NAAA convention by a chemical company representative when I inquired what spray volume did the company recommend for a specific crop.

The answer was 2-3 gals/acre, but emphasized that for better coverage they recommend increasing to 5 gals/acre. I have listened to numerous professors emphasizing that it is necessary to increase the spray volume to 1015 gals/acre for a crop such as citrus and some vegetable crops in California to 30 gals/acre.

The reality is totally the opposite; for improved crop penetration and coverage the droplet size needs to be reduced, not increased, and most definitely not to increase the volume. When the volume is increased the chemical concentration is reduced and each drop is therefore less effective.

When the spray volume is increased, the risk of evaporation is also increased due to the lower concentration and hence a higher risk of drift.

There are also mechanical complications that few agronomists are aware of, especially so with faster aircraft. A turbine aircraft may easily be spraying 18-20 acres a minute and if the agronomist specifies an application volume of 10 gals/acre this means a flow rate of approximately 200 gals/minute! To achieve this flow per minute, it is necessary to install very many large nozzles that produce a very irregular or broad droplet spectrum. Simply stated, large nozzles produce larger droplets and results in poor crop penetration and bad coverage.

Productivity: One of the largest aerial applicators in Brazil, Globo Aviação based in Imperatriz in the northern state of Maranhão, operates seven turbine aircraft on very large farms. Last year, one aircraft sprayed 300,000 hectares (750,000 acres), all of it using volumes of 5-10 liters/hectares (1/2 to 1 gal/acre).

Product labels: Spray volumes on product labels vary greatly from one country to another, even for the same crop, which should raise the question, “Why”? The reality is that practically all labels are produced using the system “copy and paste” on the premise that if a specific text has been approved by various authorities, it will be approved yet again without having to conduct and present data to confirm the product performance.

Very few companies test products using aerial application equipment because regulations only permit spraying a very small area of four acres [1.62 hectares]. This would be quite a challenge to spray such a small garden using a turbine aircraft!

What volume is really required? - (See table for label rates/volumes that work on page 32) Mosquitoes, locusts, boll weevil and spruce budworm control: For these targets, the aircraft must fly high and for mosquitoes and locusts also operate under adverse conditions of higher temperatures and low humidity. The solution is painfully obvious, remove the water and apply pure chemical or product mixed with a nonvolatile carrier such as soybean oil that will not evaporate during the delivery of the droplets.

The result is Ultra Low Volume (ULV) applications with drift spraying. Since the droplets do not evaporate, it is relatively easy to estimate the downwind drift, not so with water since the rate of evaporation changes by the minute due to any change in temperature and/or relative humidity.

(0.5-1.0 gal/ac) with excellent results under conditions of high temperature and often low humidity. In practice, the rule is quite simple, as the conditions become more adverse (increase in temperature or reduction in relative humidity), the operator must reduce the volume of water and spray volume to protect against evaporation loss.

Text from a product label for Bacillus Thuringiensis in the USA: “For aerial application use at least three gallons of water per acre; exception being arid areas, where 5 to 10 gallons are required.” This recommendation has been proven to be completely wrong and has resulted in numerous product failures and increased drift. For forestry

applications, the same product is labeled for application at ULV rates.

When the droplet size is increased, this results in less crop penetration and a dramatic reduction in effectiveness of “contact acting” products such as miticides, many fungicides and, of course, the pyrethroid family of insecticides.

Positive effects: Lowering spray volumes can result in some very positive effects if conducted in a scientific manner with careful attention to mixtures and application techniques.

Having worked worldwide with all types of products on just about every crop on this great planet, field experience has proven that when done correctly

all products work better when applied with less water and attention is paid to uniform droplet size.

In Europe, spray volumes were on the increase for years reaching 40 gals/ acre with ground machines. Now, the trend is to reduce volumes with many recommending eight gals/acre and some even five gals/acre.

Recommendation: Pilots and agronomists should share their experiences and put pressure on researchers and chemical companies to examine the benefits of low volume applications so U.S. agriculture can maintain a leading role instead of being penalized.
