from the cockpit

Decision makers It saddens me to read about the fatality of an ag-pilot. Recently, one died in Brazil that I knew from my visits there, even once visiting this particular pilot. He was not the first ag-pilot I’ve known that has been killed while doing what they loved; flying ag. This year in the U.S. has been uncharacteristically lethal. We have lost 13 and the season is yet to be over. A more typical loss is 5-7 pilots a year, depending on many factors. One exceptional year no pilots were killed. However, this year, no one seems to be able to determine a common denominator for the fatalities.

was found the high-time pilots’ accidents were more from circumstances out of their control versus the opposite being true for the low time pilots. I am not disputing the data. However, I think a few data sets are not addressed that may further explain the higher incident of accidents for 10,000+ hours pilots. For an ag-pilot to log 10,000 hours, in all likelihood, he flies high-time seasons. Whereas the less than 2,000-hour pilot may just be starting out with less hours flown during a season. My speculation would be the 10,000+ hours pilot is exposed to the risk of ag-flying at a greater level than the 2,000-hour ag-pilot.

I recently read a study carried out by the New Zealand Agricultural Aviation Association (NZAAA) where 10 years of accidents in fixed wing ag-aircraft were analyzed. The study grouped the type of accidents, i.e. loss of control, abnormal runway contact, ground handling, system/ component failure and collision with terrain/obstacle. The study also sorted by hours flown. A surprising oddity came from the study and that was 52% of the accidents were ag-pilots with more than 10,000 hours of flight time, while only 16% were of ag-pilots with 2,000 or less hours.

Another point is it would be expected of 10,000+ hours ag-pilots, many are flying more sophisticated and complex agaircraft versus the 2,000-hour ag-pilot. Of course, there is a curve in the data where the closer the relatively low-time ag pilot approaches the 2,000-hour mark, it is more likely the pilot is flying more sophisticated and complex aircraft and experiencing longer seasons. However, the data does not separate those issues. My point is the faster and heavier ag-aircraft have the potential to challenge the skills of even a 10,000+ hours pilot.

Fortunately, the study did not stop with this data, but continued to analyze why this seemingly anomaly occurred. The explanation was believable in that when the various categories were studied, it

You will be able to read more about this very interesting study in this edition of AgAir Update. Take the time to understand the graphs and the analogies made by the study and rationalize how this information

affects you. We operate in a challenging business that can take a life in one moment of complacency. We, as pilots, can make it as safe, or as dangerous, as we desire. It is preferable to make it safer and err on the side of caution. What do you do when faced with a decision; Do I fly under this wire? Do I cut back 50 or 80 liters/gallons of my load? Do I take off from the mix area, or taxi to the opposite end to takeoff into the wind? There are so many decisions ag-pilots make daily that determine the outcome of that day. Often, you can ask yourself when making these decisions, “Does it really matter?” Usually, the decisions are time-related. In almost every scenario, it is about time; flying over more hectares/acres in a day, or finishing the application job before inclement weather. Sometimes, decisions are dictated by the odds of mechanics. For instance, you have an extra drop in your mag check, or your ITT is a little higher today. Do you play the odds and continue, or do you have the problem checked out? As decision makers, as ag-pilots, it is our duty to fly in the safest possible manner. This is what separates professionals from “cowboys”. Professionals make more money and live longer. Until next month, Keep turning…

agair mail easel We just received the easel ad you mailed to us. That is a very nice gesture! Thanks so much!! I work with Ernie and he is always friendly and efficient. This last ad Deb tweaked for us a bit and I appreciated her assistance as well. Have a great day and a wonderful weekend! Joyce Lies EGE Products Minneola, KS

Probably not applicable to anything, but thought you’d appreciate the symbolism. We got Al and Mike Schiffer’s 600 spray Stearman to the National Stearman Fly-In at Galesburg IL, and paired it up with my AT-502 from Curless Flying Service. Neat contrast to show how far ag aviation technology has progressed over the last 50 years. I’m flying the 502, Carter Teeters is in the Stearman.

Hello Joyce I’m glad you like the easel. It is something we do for all our advertisers. Most use them to display at their booth when working trade shows.

Hey Mike Great photo.

Yep, Ernie is a pretty good guy. He’s been with us at least 15 years and I must have known him for over six decades (Really. He’s my cousin)!

What is not seen is the excellent technology (GPS, spray systems, etc.) that has helped out industry so much.

As for Deb, she’s been with us for over 20 years. She literally watched the kids grow up. She does great work. We like to keep the “good ones”.

The photographer is Brian Rosenstein from the back seat of an AT-6 flown by Mike Porter. I’ve been told the sound as we went over the airport was memorable at the very least. Regards, Mike Rutledge

Yes, ag aviation has come a long ways since the postwar Stearman. That is easily seen in your photo.

Take care and thanks for thinking of AAU. Give the “Schiffer brothers” a big hello for me.—Bill

If you need anything, just let Ernie, Deb, or me know. We definitely appreciate your business and hope AAU is helping brand your company. —Bill

Jerry Jones and David Miller

Third season with the Air Repair Rx Gate System on his 550 Thrush. Aircraft is using the standard 5” Transland gate and 22007 8-vane spreader easily achieving rates of 275 per acre or more. Operator, Jerry Jones, says, “I convinced my customer base to pool their spring potash prescription applications together for greater efficiency. A map was generated that covered 14,034 acres with 903 tons of potash at 8 different rates from 0-200 lbs per acre. Pilot David Miller has used this system since 2009 while flying a 602 Air Tractor for Betterfly in Indianola. David reports, ‘I flew the job over 63.58 hobb hours and 14 days which included some weather delays. Runs were 11 miles long with some runs requiring three 4000 lb loads. The material ran out on the next to last pass being off by only 1 ton on 903 tons. We use the system at the prescription level a lot but it works great in constant rate on every job. Passes are uniform upwind and downwind even on a 20 mph day giving the grower a better quality job. On top of that, your arm isn’t worn out at the end of the day.’ ”

Tri-County Ag on display in Colorado Editor’s Note: Often times, spectacular images appear in the many news feeds that AgAir Update monitors about agricultural aviation. Such was the case for these images captured by Laura Harwood of Mountain Girl Photography. Laura visually tells the story of Tri-County Ag, located in Wray, Colorado. Tri-County Ag operates an AT-502 and three AT-802s. Currently owned by the Aurora Co-Op, the company operates over 30 Air Tractors from South Dakota to Texas. Greg Allen, one of TriCounty Ag’s pilots tells us about the business and the details of this western operation. AAU: Tell us about the history of TriCounty Ag. How did it get started, what airplanes did you begin with? Allen: Tri-County Ag was started by Kris and Laurie Jones in 2007. The two started out with a single AT-301, and later added an AT-401 and a radial 1340 Ag Cat midseason of their first year. Aurora CoOp purchased the flying service about

three years ago, but Kris and Laurie have continued to manage the business. AAU: How did you end up with the aircraft you are operating now? Allen: I left farming in July of 2007. Kris hired me to help him on the ground and to learn the aerial application business. That first summer, I learned the loading pad, how to coordinate spraying and most importantly that this was the business I was born for. At the end of the season, Kris and I decided that I would buy his AT-401 and he would move up into an AT-602. Kris would mentor me into his operation as an independent contractor, and in return I would fly exclusively for him. I flew the AT-401 for a year and a half, then bought a geared Thrush that I operated around four years until I saved up the down payment for the AT-502BB featured in the photos. This year was my third season with it.

AAU: The paint job on your 502B is unique. Any reason for that? What is the story behind it? Allen: I bought the airplane from Rusty Linderman out of Texas. I understood at the time he had all of his planes painted to match. When I went to pick it up he was in the middle of building the famous “Dusty Crophopper” for Disney. I always like to be just a little different from the crowd, so the paint appealed to me. Honestly, I was under a time crunch to get something bought because I spent most of the winter trying to get the Thrush sold! I could not buy until I got the money out of the Thrush. Rusty’s AT-502B was the best on the market in my price range and at the time the paint job felt like a little nod of approval from God. Lots of prayer went into making the decision to go that far into debt. Tri-

County Ag was growing fast and Kris and Laurie assured me that there would be work to support it. AAU: What is the main crop you treat? Secondary crop? Allen: We mainly treat potatoes, but wheat and corn are a close second and third. Our farmers grow lots of other specialty crops like dry-edible beans, sunflowers, pumpkins and alfalfa. We are blessed with good ground water here, so irrigation helps to even out the good and bad years for us. AAU: What is your typical application rates? Allen: We spray all of our crops at 2, 3 and 5 gallons per acre. AAU: How are your aircraft setup (ie. which GPS, nozzles, etc) Allen: We are very conventional here, utilizing SATLOCs and CP nozzles on all of our planes AAU: Who are the other pilots that are flying for Tri-County Ag? Allen: Kris Jones still flies when needed, but Stan Mangus and Cody Perrin also fly the AT-802s.This year Scott Gale also came over from Australia to help us out during our peak season. AAU: What is your typical season? Allen: This year our season ended a little early. We were pretty much done by the middle of September. Most years we fly a little longer, but are almost always finished by October. AAU: How long have you been actively ag flying? Allen: I bought my AT-401 in 2008 and have been full time ever since. This year was my eighth season. AAU: Is that a commercially available sidewinder (in photo) or did you build it? Allen: My dad and I built it for the old forklift. I have had several people tell me that with a little refinement, I could probably sell them, but have never taken the time.

(Top to Bottom): Greg Allen smiles for Laura Harwood’s camera in his AT-502B. One of Tri-County Ag’s AT-802s, they operate three. Greg Allen’s AT-502B gets cleaned after a day protecting Colorado agriculture.

INTERNATIONAL (L-R) Tri-County Ag’s main arsenal, the AT-502 and on of their three AT-802s. AAU: Does the AT-502B and AT802s have individual roles or do you interchange them? (i.e. AT-802s for only dry work, etc) Allen: The airplanes are pretty much interchangeable, I have always flown the dry work in the AT-502B, but we do very little dry applications here, only rye seed in standing corn for pasture in late August or early September.

AAU: Any parting thoughts? Allen: I was born into a family of pilots. My dad was and still is my primary instructor. Funny, he always warned me away from ag flying! My uncle flew in the military and then was a pilot for Northwest Airlines. But, he always warned me away from the airlines! I wanted to go into the military, but my eyes were not good enough, so I went to

college in Longview Texas at LeTourneau University to become either a corporate pilot, or a missionary pilot. But, by the time I graduated with a Bachelors in Aviation Technology, I had too much debt to be a missionary pilot and not enough experience to be a corporate pilot. By then, I had a family to support so I went back to the farm until God gave me the chance to fly ag. Now I am where I was destined to be.

truth in flight

Interpersonal relationships One would assume the job of an agricultural pilot comes with absolute solitude. If you think about it, the plane comes equipped with a single seat (usually). The truth is that flying such aircraft is largely a group effort consisting of contributions from mechanics, entomologists and ground crew - in addition to the pilot. Most pilots are mindful enough to anticipate surprises that may arise during the course of the application. They need to be attentive and assertive while in the air. But, they simply can’t do it alone and must understand that a successful day of aerial application involves teamwork.

Each member of this successful team gives 100%, all the time. These team members, whom I’ll refer to as crewmembers, are the backbone of the aircraft operation. However, there are good crewmembers and bad ones. Personally, I’ve worked with both kinds,

so I can tell who’s going to be an asset and who won’t last in the field. Good crewmembers have things coordinated with everything planned, anticipating the next load, next weather system, etc.; they come prepared. Bad crewmembers are those unfamiliar with their work surroundings, are always complaining and suffer from poor self-esteem. Another integral part of a successful team is the aircraft mechanics. They are as important as wings on an aircraft. A great mechanic masters the art of listening. He knows the pilot controls

When interpersonal relationships get involved in the team dynamic, the ebb and flow of work suffers. A strong team leaves out personal issues involving family or their social life. When personal beliefs, prejudices, cultural and social differences get involved, the dynamic of the team becomes troublesome. When taking my CFI courses, I was astonished by some of the material. The subjects had little to do with regulations, mechanics or weather. Even though I had a personal interest in those topics, it shocked me to see how much was focused on the human aspect, specifically towards effective and assertive communication skills. However, it was a good thing these issues were covered as they relate to our daily

duties training pilots. The truth is that we all regularly judge one another, even if we are not aware we are doing it. We should be learning to manage that judgment in a more professional manner. Being alert to such things is like filtering out what is relevant in order to have a machine operate smoothly. But, the fact of the matter is that we take our personal issues to work, instead of being the person our workplace uniforms represent. We must be cautious so we don’t misunderstand things. Bringing personal problems to work does not solve any problems. Doing so only contributes to them. As far as agricultural aviation is concerned, any display of inattentiveness can cost you severely. We have to be at our mental best when we are flying. We need to have a frame of mind that can adapt to any circumstances and an attitude that incorporates peace, tolerance for peers, empathy and devotion. Our personal well-being is what motivates us to be professional.

Relationship problems, family issues, financial troubles...these things are always going to be problematic for everyone, everywhere, all the time. Juggling your professional and personal life positively requires effort, but is feasible if one is committed. Around 9,000 fewer agricultural flying hours have been reported for the first half of 2016 compared to 2015 in New Zealand. While some statistics returns are still to be submitted, it’s clear that there has been a significant reduction in activity in the sector for 2016 to date. The reduced activity is also evident in the reported agricultural statistics. Helicopter operators have reported 11,900 fewer tonnes applied for the first half of 2016 than 2015; fixed wing operators have reported 81,700 fewer tonnes applied.

The agricultural aviation accident rate continues its overall downward trend in 2016 for both fixed wing and helicopter operations. The 12-month accidents/100,000 hours figure for fixed wing aircraft sits at 2.16 and 6.59 for helicopters (as of June 2016):

The 3-year accidents/100,000 hours figure for fixed wing aircraft is currently 9.34 and 6.35 for helicopters:

In his book ‘The Killing Zone’ pilot Paul Craig describes experienced pilots as those who have survived their own ignorance. He writes:

There have been three accidents and four incidents reported in the agricultural aviation sector in 2016 to date.

We know agricultural aviation pilots are exposed to more risks than pilots in other aviation sectors. Ag pilots do more takeoffs and landings on air strips of variable quality, operate at very low altitudes amongst many physical hazards, in changing weather conditions. The work is repetitive, fatiguing and demands a huge amount of the pilot’s attention. When we talk about staying safe and performing well in this type of environment, the experience of the pilot is frequently identified as one of the most important factors.

INTERNATIONAL

“I survived my own ignorance, but others were not so fortunate. Some pilots along the way did not learn from their mistakes, but, unfortunately, were killed by their mistakes.” Since 2000 in New Zealand, there have been 208 agricultural aviation accidents including 21 fatalities. 128 of these occurred in fixed wing aircraft; 80 in helicopters. Was inexperience a factor? Not as often as you might think. In an analysis of fixed wing agricultural accidents, the results were surprising. In 52% of the accidents, the pilot had over 10,000 hours total time. More inexperienced pilots, those with fewer than 2000 hours, accounted for 16% of the accidents. For helicopters, the picture is a little different. There, 17% of the accidents involved 10,000+ hour pilots while 35% involved pilots with less than 2000 hours. These are surprising results considering what is known about experience and expertise. The ‘10,000-hour rule’ refers to the finding by some researchers that on average, 10,000 hours of practice at something makes an individual an expert, or master, of it. In other words, 10,000 hours of being exposed to a long list of situations and scenarios and learning how to deal with them is what makes someone an expert. According to this theory, it’s the 10,000+ hour pilots that should be the least likely to have accidents. Those 10,000 hours of building expertise should ensure they are the best at managing the hazards listed earlier. So what is going on? Is experience not all that it’s cracked up to be?

GRANULAR FLOW CONTROL SYSTEM

AGFLOW G1

To investigate, we can use the fixed wing accident data. The first step taken was to develop accident categories, as they apply to agricultural flying in New Zealand. This was based on the accident categories developed by the Commercial Aviation Safety Team. We came up with six accident categories with 33 subcategories.

The categories and their definitions are: Abnormal runway contact Abnormal contact with the airstrip surface; includes hard landings, overshoots and undershoots, other runway excursions, off-centre landings and ground loops. Collision - terrain/obstacle/object Accidents involving collision with terrain or other obstacles including wires, trees, fences, etc. while in flight. The aircraft must be under the control of the pilot at the time of the collision. Fuel Accidents involving contamination.

For the 10,000+ hour pilots, the main accident categories were loss of control and system/component failures. That supports the idea that experience actually does protect against accidents - mechanical failures are generally not the fault of the pilot and are not related to their level of experience. Nearly a third of their accidents, however, involved loss of control.

handling and other human factors. Evidently, more experienced pilots have fewer human operator-related accidents than less experienced pilots, but the difference is slight at 10%.

In contrast, the less experienced group, the less than 10,000-hour pilots had abnormal runway contact as the largest proportion of accidents. Interestingly, they had around half the percentage of accidents involving system/component failure than the more experienced group, so a higher proportion involved aircraft

“The top three defining events (for accidents) were in-flight collision with an obstacle, loss of aircraft control and system or component failure... because it is consistently one of the most common (and often fatal) accident types, obstacle collision remains a top industry concern.”

These New Zealand agricultural aviation accident statistics are similar to those of the USA. In a 2014 NTSB report:

Loss of control accidents If this is the largest accident category for very experienced pilots, then what are the causal factors behind it? A loss of control accident means the pilot partially or fully loses control of the aircraft and collides with the ground or some other obstacle. Control can be lost for a number of reasons, including stalls, encounters with severe windshear, or weight and balance problems. In New Zealand fixed wing agricultural operations, the vast majority (76%) occur on takeoff. Editor’s note: See “From the Cockpit”, page 6 for further comments on 10,000 hour pilots’ vs. 2,000 pilots’ accident rate.

Australian ATSB report The ATSB’s (Australian Transportation Safety Bureau) aerial application safety 2015–2016 year in review found wire strikes were the most common cause of accidents and serious incidents (near accidents) in aerial applications between May 2015 and April 2016. There were 29 accidents and serious incidents reported to the ATSB during this period. Of these, 16 were accidents with one resulting in a fatal injury and 13 were serious incidents. The most prevalent occurrence was wire strikes, comprising nearly 40% of all occurrences. Of these occurrences, two resulted in destroyed aircraft and 14 resulted in substantial damage to aircraft. Overall, the average age for pilots involved in accidents in the past 10 years was 42 years. Total pilot experience for those pilots involved in accidents and serious incidents had a median of 4,800 flight hours in total. The median flight hours on the aircraft type was considerably lower at 674 hours. Aircraft wire strikes caused 11 accidents and serious incidents in the 12-month period. Across the last decade, wire strikes were the most prevalent type of occurrence with more than half of the total accidents and serious incidents involved a wire strike. Other types of accidents and serious incidents in the 12-month period were engine failure or malfunction (6), collision with terrain (3), controlled flight into terrain (2) and runway excursion (2). Safety factors relating to human factors were most prevalent, in particular monitoring and checking, which contributed to 35% of occurrences. Most wire strikes involve wires the pilot was already aware of. Often, they involve wires which the pilot has flown near several times before that day. In the previous 10 years, 73% of pilots reported being aware of the wire before they struck it. Of the 11 wire strikes in the previous year, the ATSB had information on six about pilot prior awareness of the wire struck. Of these six, five of the pilots involved were aware of the wire before they struck it.

With flying operations very close to the ground, aerial application pilots are well aware of the dangers of wires. The ATSB says pilots need to know the location of wires in the area to be sprayed through maps, talking with landowners and locals, and through aerial reconnaissance before operations commence. Spray patterns need to be organized with wire locations in mind and pilots need to maintain focus during their flying task, using continuous reminders of the presence of wires. When plans change or the spray pattern differs, such as for clean-up runs, pilots need to redo their aerial reconnaissance of wires. Although there has been a slight growth in the number of accidents over the past three years, there were considerably

fewer accidents each year in the past decade than in the previous 25 years. Aerial agriculture has the second highest accident rate per million hours flown across operation types, behind non-VHregistered recreational aeroplanes. Within the VH-registered general aviation sector, aerial agriculture had both the highest average rates of accidents (154.8 per million hours flown) and fatal accidents (21.1 per million hours flown). For the full ATSB report, visit: http://www.atsb.gov.au/publications/2016/ar-2016-022/. It took some adjusting to driving on the left side of the road, especially in Brisbane traffic. No worries, as the Aussies say, the rental car made it back to Brisbane after four days and 1,000 km without a scratch. I arrived at Hoppy’s Wynnwood Airspray just as he was landing after his last load of the day. The threat of coming rain was putting Queensland operators to work for early spring fungicide applications on wheat. Today, their Wynnwood Airspray meets the needs of Eastern Darling Downs growers with an efficient Air Tractor AT-402. If not for the brotherhood of aerial applicators worldwide, like with Hoppy, it would be next to impossible for AgAir Update to travel the world to bring their stories to other operators; an elite group of pilots.

Large ring tanks hold water reserves from rainfall. Water is pumped into the ring tanks from the Condomine River or from a well bore. All cotton is flood irrigated, while other irrigated crops use lateral move or pivot systems.

in my opinion

Three-point vs wheel landings This little essay is a pilot preference thing and truly and in every sense of the word, an “opinion-type” dissertation, mine! It seems to me, after many years teaching my turbine transition course with Flying Tiger Aviation, most ag pilots attending my course prefer to make wheel-type landings, as opposed to full stall, three-point landings.

How-some-ever, this is not my personal preference. I know more often than not, ag pilots will land in one direction and take off in another, especially when the wind is not too strong and their loading facilities are on one end of the strip. Under these circumstances, making a wheel landing will certainly expedite the turnaround time. Occasionally I will make a wheel landing just to see if I still can. Listing the reasons I prefer three-point landings are: 1. Three-point landings present somewhat more of a challenge and I love a challenge.

3. There is less wear on the brakes and less rubber knocked off the tires, assuming, you are landing on a paved airstrip. 4. In a Thrush or Air Tractor, when the stick moves aft off the forward limits, the tailwheel is locked. If you keep the longitudinal axis absolutely parallel with the centerline of the runway, there is a much less chance you will ground loop the airplane.

establish a semi flat, two-point attitude, because he may not be entirely sure as to when the main gear will actually be touching terra firma. As a result it usually results in an acceptable “2.5” point landing and is less likely to engender the loud guffaws from the peanut gallery on the sidelines when anticipating a kangaroo-style landing. If you usually make wheel landings, see if you can improve your skill with three-point landings. You may actually grow to prefer them. And as always, be safe, have fun and make money.

5. This may be debatable, but “In My Opinion”, the perfect three-point landing will result in a shorter roll out after touchdown. When landing on a 2000’ strip (which can be a long airstrip for some ag pilots), the three-point landing is the preferable way to do it. Several years ago, while I was giving refresher flight training for the Dole International Fresh Fruit Company in Costa Rica and Honduras, I noticed that all their pilots were consistently making wheel landings. I told them we were going to start making three-point landings. As it turned out, only two of their eight pilots in Costa Rica had ever made three-point landings and the thought of doing these unnerved some of them considerably. But, we did them! The next year when I returned for continuing refresher training, they all wanted to show me how proficient they were in three-point landings. For the remaining 10 days I was there, that was the only type landing they did. I do not understand why the three-point landing seems to perturb some pilots, but it does. According to Bill Lavender, publisher/editor of AgAir Update, whenever he is flying a new airplane for the first time, he will

2. When you touch down in a perfect three-point landing, the airplane is absolutely through flying; it will not bounce, unless, of course, you drop it from ten feet.

AT-602: Trim your overhead. You’ll reduce costs and increase profit margins when you scale a multi-plane operation down to a single-plane operation. Air Tractor’s AT-602 makes it an easy choice. The big 630-gallon payload moves you up to high volume production, reduces loads, saves time and helps trim operating expenses compared with two smaller planes. The AT-602 is the ideal solution for 5-gallon work on center-pivot circles. Step it up with an AT-602. Visit your Air Tractor dealer.

AT-802: Capacity that creates profits. An 800-gallon hopper, zippy 190 mph ferry speeds, and greater working capacity than any other ag aircraft on the market - the AT-802 is simply a hoss. With the AT-802 you’ll ferry faster, spray more fields and do bigger jobs all in one load. That’s production that only Air Tractor can offer you. Visit with your Air Tractor dealer about the AT-802. And ask about special Air Tractor financing now available from Wells Fargo for qualified buyers. 2012 AT-502B/34AG, 2,050 TTAF&E, G4, VG’S, HEATER, LANE BRAKE, SPREADER $695,000.00 Lane Aviation 888-995LANE / 281-342-5451 or FAX: 281-2325401

AT-502B: More performance; more profit potential. With Air Tractor’s AT-502B there’s plenty of power and a big, 500gallon payload to please both pilot and operator. The Pratt & Whitney PT6A34AG turbine engine delivers efficient and effective performance that shortens ferry times and reduces takeoffs and landings.
