from the cockpit
Creating time We all should know which month this is and the significance of it (other than the American Independence Day is July 4th). July is typically the month North America experiences the most ag aviation related accidents. According to the NTSB, the industry already has suffered two fatalities operating under Part 137, and several more non-fatal accidents, not counting a double-fatality training accident. Knowing that data should bring pause and a plan to not become a July statistic, or a statistic for any month for that matter. Maybe you think it is easy for me to write this, while sitting in an airconditioned office typing on a computer. All the while, you are trying to manage a backlog of work with more rain and wind in the forecast. You are correct. It is easier. While I was an active ag-pilot, there was not the luxury of ample data telling agpilots July can be a dangerous month. It is obvious though, the higher the workload, the more stress, the more likely to make a mistake. I have to admit, I really never thought within those parameters. I simply bull-headed my way through the season. Looking back, I marvel at the fact that I survived 27 years with that attitude. Not unscathed, but survived nonetheless. You have this awareness and can use it to your advantage. The airlines’ near perfect accident-free record, relatively, could be due to time. Taking the time to go through the checklist ritual, even though pilots can recite it in their sleep. Taking the time to ground a flight for even the slightest imperfection, when

an ag-pilot is tempted and often does, proceed when he or she knows the risk factor has increased. Our game is one of time and this works against us. The only way to mitigate this element is to find more of it. How do you reasonably do that? Well, you could start with a larger aircraft or more of them. However, that may not be reasonable. You could start your day sooner, fly later. All that does is add more stress. Maybe you could incorporate night vision goggles. That could work under the right circumstances and hiring extra pilots. You can’t fly 24/7. Time is a precious commodity. You can’t create more of it. It is finite. You have to come to the realization that just maybe you can’t do every acre that comes through the door. Once you are comfortable with that and start making decisions based on that mindset, I believe you will find yourself operating in a much safer manner. As ag-pilots, our nature is to push the envelope; that’s really not a good thing. There has to be a balance between our mission-oriented mentality and one that is safety oriented. Safety wall posters are fine and should be used. But, a photo of loved ones on the instrument panel works far better. Your subconscious mind will respond to this type of input. I trust everyone will have a successful season. For most, it has passed the halfway point and by now, operators and pilots know what to expect for this year. Here in Georgia, the eye gnats are the worst that I can remember and have
arrived the earliest. The uneducated guess is because of a mild winter. If eye gnats are any indication, I’m betting insect pressure in the South will be high, especially in late July and August. I don’t wish the farmer any ill-will for more insects to spray. However, not unlike the undertaker has said, “I hate to see you die, but I sure could use the business.” Another note: In the final moments of proofing this edition of AgAir Update, I was re-reading the “20 years ago” article about my flight evaluation of Lindley Johnson’s Walter-powered Thrush with the Turbine Design engine conversion. Something kept nagging me about that aircraft as I read the article. You see, last week I was in California doing an evaluation flight of Dave Johnston’s Ultra Thrush. I’m not sure what prompted me to email Lindley to inquire, but as I suspected, it turned out this was the same Thrush! Unbeknownst to me, I flew it again almost to the month 20 years later, except now it has a PT6A41 engine and has been completely “reborn” by Johnston Aircraft Service. Be sure to read about it in an upcoming edition of AgAir Update. Until next month, Keep turning…

agair mail correction I made a grievous error in my article “Avoid Temperature Inversions”. In the second paragraph I wrote, “The spray material does not rise up, but instead moves over and comes down again”. This is blatantly false.” I should have written, “The spray material does not rise up, move over and come down again.” Spray material is continuously falling, with or without a temperature inversion. It leaves “tracks” or symptoms wherever it goes, so long as there are susceptible plants to record the symptoms. This may be on crops or non-crops. Sorry about the error! ! ! L. B. Haven’t talked to you in awhile. I’m on a SEAT standby up in Colorado for Aero Applicators. I’m also flying a lot of ag here, as well. Puerto Rico contracts are back in place. Life is good. A story I was thinking about is Stan Ferguson at Southern Aire in Cotton Plant, Arkansas. Stan flies an AT-602 and his son works with who flies a Thrush 510. So, Stan flew the Thrush the other day and posted on Facebook. I think this would make a great story. Regards, Jason Blanke Hannibal,MO Hello Jason; Please send me the link about Stan’s Thrush post. We can’t find it. Here’s where we featured an article on him in 2011: https://issuu.com/aau_ proofs/docs/02feb2011

clarification Thia Walker from Colorado State University clarified that the implementation of the Worker Protection Safety (WPS) rule has not been officially delayed, regardless of what the Mississippi Department of Agriculture has indicated. The letter from EPA is just an official response to NASDA’s petition and no official regulatory or congressional action has occurred to make it legal. It has to be published in the Federal Register before that can occur and, as a result, the 2015 rule is still in effect. Please continue to comply with the 2015 Rule. France I talked about you to Stéphane Durandière in Côte d’Ivoire and I think he is in touch with you. Next week, I fly to Côte d’Ivoire, as I do sometimes, for short term pilot replacement or training. In 10 days, I start a vineyard spraying season by helicopter (Hughes 500) in Germany. Things are going well for me at the moment.
More and more I work also as a consultant and train new ag-pilots. I read in a previous edition a comparison between spraying by plane and helicopter and I have lot of things to say about this. I expect to have some time to write it soon. It depends of the aim. Some times we can do more efficient work by helicopter, even with its small hopper! We leave in a strange country here in

It’s a pleasure to read AAU every month to be advised about what is happening in the world. Sad news, maybe you knew Owen Dale Holland from Louisiana. He died in a plane crash two months ago. We have been friends from the time we flew together in Cameroon. Christophe Druart Fismes, France Hello Christophe; It is very good to hear from you. Thank you for updating me. It is most unfortunate that France no longer allows aerial applications. It is such a hypocrisy; people don’t want aerial spraying, but the same people beg to be sprayed with a pesticide to control the mosquito! It is really coincidental that you emailed yesterday, as I was visiting Cicaré in Saladillo Argentina! I think there is a relationship between their CH7 helicopter and the Kompress CH7. I will be writing an article about the interview in coming months.

I am very curious about your opinion and experience when comparing the helicopter with the fixed wing aircraft for aerial applications. I understand the various reasons why one aircraft can be better than the other. However, I believe it is a myth that the helicopter has more down wash than a 500gal or more ag aircraft when the helicopter is being flown at its operational speed of 60 or more mph. Maybe you can explain that in your article. Yes, very sad and unfortunate about Owen Holland. I believe he was the second ag pilot killed this year in the U.S. Take care my friend, —Bill

Air Tractor AT-802 series
marks 25 years & 700 airplanes When Air Tractor AT-802A, bearing serial #0700 took off last month for its home in Valencia, Spain, the occasion was not just an airplane production milestone. It also happens to be the 25th anniversary year marking FAA Type Certification of the 800-gallon capacity agricultural and firefighting airplane. Jim Hirsch, president of Air Tractor remarked, “It’s been almost 27 years since the first AT-802 test flight over Olney, Texas. The airplane had to overcome some initial hurdles, but the 802 series has become a popular aircraft that is used all over the world for a wide variety of highly specialized applications.” He continued, “Over the years we’ve focused on improving the flying qualities and handling characteristics of the 802 so that it is as enjoyable to fly as our smaller models. This makes for an extremely productive aircraft that keeps pilot fatigue at a minimum—which is another reason for the airplane’s success.” According to his memoir, Putting Dreams to Flight, Air Tractor founder Leland
Snow was looking for a way to diversify the product line beyond agricultural airplanes. It was 1989 and he wanted to insulate Air Tractor from farm economy downturns, of which Air Tractor had recently weathered. Snow saw that aerial firefighting airplanes shared similar performance requirements to ag planes. With guidance from forestry and firefighting professionals, Snow designed the two-seat 800-gallon AT802F specifically for aerial firefighting and initial attack. The airframe was based on the 500-gallon AT-503A with a dual cockpit in tandem configuration. He worked with a young engineer named Victor Trotter, who is now President of Trotter Controls, to develop and patent the world’s most advanced computerized, constant flow fire gate. The aircraft proved capable of working fires from remote strips, carrying an 800-gallon load and it had the reliability of a PT6A turbo-prop engine and easy maintenance of a new airframe.
Not long after the completion of the AT-802F, Snow made the bold move to design a version for agricultural use. At that time, the standard for the ag industry was 300 and 400-gallon planes. The AT-502 was only five years old, with fewer than 150 in use. Though some people were skeptical that an 800-gallon ag plane with a 16,000-pound gross weight would find a place in the aerial application market, Snow swapped the tandem cockpit for a single-seat cockpit, added spray plumbing and booms and designated it the AT-802A. This model was the first of the series to receive its FAA Type Certificate in December 1992. The first AT-802A was purchased by Dan Kubecka of Kubecka Flying Service in Edna, Texas. Kubecka put the plane through the rigors of a busy rice season and soon purchased a second one. Leland’s hunch was right, says Hirsch. There were plenty of ag operators who wanted the AT-802A. Sales took off. The 800-gallon hopper, 200 mph ferry speed, and the productivity of the AT-802A
Outfitted with Wipaire amphibious floats, the AT-802 has demonstrated its versatility to operate as the 802F Fire Boss scooper water bomber.

allowed many operators to reduce their number of planes and pilots and become much more efficient. Hirsch reports that today more than 60 percent of AT-802 airplanes work ag in countries around the world.
aircraft, and a third one added later to the fleet, continue to operate as part of Aramco’s contingency plan for oil spills. Air Tractor 802 aircraft were also utilized in the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast during the BP oil spill of 2010.
While the ag model enjoyed early success, introducing a new singleengine air tanker to a world of converted military twin-engine heavy tankers proved to be a daunting challenge. But the late Air Tractor dealer Chuck Kemper of Queen Bee Air Specialties was an early, enthusiastic believer in the 802. Persistently knocking on bureaucrats’ doors, Chuck Kemper and the 802F gradually gained the respect— and firefighting contracts—of the Bureau of Land Management, Colorado State Forest Service and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Halfway around the world in Spain, Victor Huerta Jr. was buying large numbers of 802F airplanes and pioneering a whole new approach— the initial attack strategy—for wildfire fighting in Europe. His story is well chronicled in the June 2017 issue of AgAir Update’s AirFire and Forestry.
It is the rugged dependability and lifting power of the AT-802 that inspired Air Tractor dealer and specialty aircraft operator Conair Group of Abbotsford, British Columbia to use the AT-802 for bulk fuel hauling. In 2005 Conair tested the AT-802 for its suitability to transport fuel to remote villages and mining towns in Canada’s North Country. According to Rick Pedersen, VP and General Manager of Conair at the time, the concept proved viable, but the airplane wasn’t optimized for the job. So in a cooperative effort with Air Tractor, Conair added an aluminum lower hopper to the belly of the airplane, creating a two-piece, independent upper and lower bulk fuel tank system with 4,000 liters capacity (1,057 gallons). Loading and off-loading pumping systems were installed for the two tanks. By 2007 Conair had certified the highly modified 802 for bulk fuel hauling, lightning protection and cold weather flying. Today, these 802 fuel haulers are working in Alaska, northern Canada and in Indonesia.
The Air Tractor 802 series is rightly thought of as either an ag or firefighting aircraft. But its unique combination of power, payload capacity, flying performance and reliability has made it useful for variety of other tasks, too. In 1996, Saudi Aramco purchased two AT-802s for use in oil spill dispersal and clean up in the Red Sea. These two
Meanwhile, below the southern U.S. border, the AT-802 had been repurposed for an entirely different, more hazardous job. In 2002 Air Tractor began providing aircraft to the U.S. State Department for South American counter-narcotics
operations. The 800-gallon capacity turboprop airplanes were equipped with engine and cockpit armor, selfsealing fuel tanks, advanced avionics and airframe modifications for their specialized missions to eradicate narcotic crops. By the program’s end two years ago, 19 modified 802 series aerial spray aircraft had been supplied to the State Department. This experience with the U.S. State Department led Leland Snow in 2009 to respond to a U.S. Air Force Request For Information for a Light Attack/Armed Reconnaissance aircraft suitable for finding, tracking and attacking targets either on its own or in support of ground forces. Since the AT-802 had already garnered many years of successful service for the State Department, Snow embarked on a new version of the 802 series to be known as the AT-802U. It has engine and cockpit armor, a bulletproof windscreen, self-sealing fuel tanks, and structural reinforcements for the ability to perform surveillance and light strike missions. Working with various weapons integrators, Air Tractor has delivered 28 of the 802U aircraft, which are operational today in the Middle East. Sales of 802 series aircraft grew year over year and by 2005 Air Tractor had delivered the 200th AT-802 to Conair Group. operates from either land or water. It can drop fire retardant, foam and fight wildfires by scooping water from nearby lakes, rivers and reservoirs. The float-equipped “Fire Boss” version of the 802F is commonly equipped with a 1,600 SHP Pratt & Whitney PT6A-67F turbine engine and has found wide use around the world, particularly in Europe’s Balkan countries along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. After wildfires have been extinguished, burned areas are at risk of flooding, landslides and topsoil erosion. New Mexicobased Aero Tech, Inc. has built a successful business with government agencies, timber companies, farmers and ranchers not only using the AT-802 for wildfire fighting, but also for fire reclamation, aerial hydromulching, hydroseeding and timber fertilization. Biodegradable hydromulch stabilizes the soil and provides nutrient media for new plant growth on fire-damaged lands. Aero Tech’s AT-802 fleet also performs aerial applications of insecticides, biological agents and fertilizers, as well as air support for promoting and monitoring the health and growth of forests.
This AT-802 is applying hydromulch to prevent soil erosion in a burned a timber forest.
Whatever the mission—ag, firefighting, narco-crop, military missions, forest reclamation or controlling locust plagues and even dispersing ocean oil spills—the common denominator for all these specialized jobs is the big 802-series Air Tractor. Says Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch, “The AT-802 has proven to be a versatile and reliable platform for many uses. And after a quarter of century, it’s still the most efficient and productive aircraft. It is unparalleled,” Hirsch concludes.

Thrush Aircraft delivers 100th 510G Major milestone reached as GEpowered agricultural aircraft continues to be a favorite with both pilots and operators worldwide. ALBANY, GEORGIA—As the Thrush factory’s large delivery hangar doors slid open to begin another day – a new 510G sat at the front of the space, sunlight glinting off its wings. Although the aircraft’s distinctive red and white company livery looked similar to other 510G’s coming off the assembly line, this one was quite special – as it was the 100th 510G to be completed by Thrush since the aircraft received FAA certification in 2012.
100 and Counting – Thrush Aircraft has delivered the 100th Thrush 510G agricultural aircraft. Powered by the revolutionary GE H80 turboprop engine, Thrush 510Gs are now operating in twelve countries and have accumulated over 63,000 flight hours to date.

creativepro.com The Thrush 510G is powered by the revolutionary GE H80 turboprop engine, a first for both general aviation, as well as the agricultural aviation industry.
The H80 is lighter, more powerful, and more fuel efficient than competitive engines, and it has the ability to produce its fullrated 800 shp at high altitudes and field elevations. Combined with the Thrush 510 airframe and designated the Thrush 510G, the aircraft has quickly become a favorite among pilots – especially those working in hot and high conditions. And, with its higher cruise speeds for increased productivity, no hot section inspection requirement, and a TBO of 3,600 hours, it has proven to be extremely popular with operators as well. Thrush 510G’s are now working in twelve countries worldwide, and the fleet has accumulated over 63,000 flight hours to date. The 100th Thrush 510G is being delivered to Mid-Continent Aircraft Corporation in Hayti, Missouri where it will quickly be put into service beginning with this year’s spring and summer spray seasons. In addition to providing aerial application services to growers and ranchers in the region, Mid-Continent is also a highly regarded factory-authorized Thrush dealer and service center. Agricultural aviation legend Dick Reade founded Mid-Continent Aircraft in 1949, and continues at the company’s helm today. “I couldn’t think of a better person to receive our 100th 510G than Dick Reade,” said Payne Hughes, president of Thrush Aircraft. “Not only has his company and its staff provided our customers with outstanding support over the years – but his observations and advice have been invaluable to me and to Thrush as we’ve grown the company and our product line to meet the needs of agricultural aviation operators worldwide” he continued. Like its sister aircraft, the Thrush 510P, the 510G has a hopper capacity of 500 gallons, a certified gross operating weight of 10,500 pounds, and is available in both single and dual cockpit configurations. Research and development of the aircraft and its GE engine continues at the factory, with additional refinements anticipated in the years ahead. “We’re very proud of the relationship between GE Aviation and Thrush,” said Mr. Hughes. “Both of our companies are committed to continuing to bring the best flying, most highly advanced, and most capable aircraft to the agricultural aviation industry,” he continued. “The first 100 510Gs have proven to be every bit of that and more,” he added, “and I can promise the next 100 will be even better.”
About Thrush Aircraft Company Headquartered in Albany, Georgia, Thrush Aircraft manufactures a full range of aerial application aircraft used in agriculture, forestry and fire fighting roles worldwide. Founded in 2003, Thrush is well-known for building the most durable aircraft in the aerial application industry, as well as the best flying – from both pilot and operator perspectives. GE Aviation submits EASA type certificate for EEPC-equipped, H80 Thrush GENEVA, SWITZERLAND — GE Aviation is closing in on its second type certification for its Electronic Engine and Propeller Control (EEPC) system. The company has submitted an application to the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for approval of the EEPC-equipped H80 turboprop engine on the Thrush 510G. An EEPC-equipped Thrush 510G successfully completed its first flight in March. To date, nearly 250 hours of EEPC system ground and flight tests have been accumulated. GE’s EEPC is the business and general aviation industry’s first turboprop offering single-lever control of the engine and propeller operations. It features also include an auto start, as well as speed, temp and torque limits. “The single-lever control allows pilots to push for takeoff and not worry about temperatures, speeds or torque, which no other turboprop manufacturer can claim,” said Brad Mottier, GE Aviation’s VP of Business and General Aviation and Integrated Systems business. “We have gotten great, positive test pilot

feedback from not only a performance standpoint but a safety factor as well.” Next year, GE and Thrush plan to offer an EEPC-equipped H85 for 510G operators, providing additional horsepower for crop dusting missions. The first type certification for EEPC was granted by EASA last November and approved by the FAA in March for Nextant Aerospace’s G90XT, a remanufactured and reimagined King Air C90. Last October 25, GE Aviation and Nextant successfully completed first flight of the H75-powered G90XT in full EEPC configuration. With another two applications to follow, the EEPC-equipped H Series has already been selected for four aircraft applications. The EEPC includes three key components or elements: 1.Electronic Engine Control Unit - The EECU acts as the brain of engine control system, responsible for electronic control of the engine and propeller via a single lever. It auto-starts the engine and automatically prevents overtemp, overspeed and overtorque, leading to longer engine life and easier maintenance. 2.The Fuel Metering Unit - The FMU meters how much fuel the engine needs. Integrated with the fuel pump, the FMU guarantees the engine always has the proper amount of fuel nothing more, nothing less. 3.Electronic Prop Governor - This part controls the propeller speed, forward & reverse blade pitch control. It mechanically prevents the engine and propeller from overspeed, again. The H Series turboprop family incorporates GE’s 3-D aerodynamic design techniques and advanced materials to create a powerful, fuel-efficient, durable engine with no

Quality ‘hinges’ on proper components for hangar doors Schweiss Doors rescues Florida hangar owner FAIRFAX, MN—Imagine walking out to your hangar to see its 74-foot door in a twisted heap, lying on the ground. Tom Vaughan, a manager at two Florida municipal airports, recently experienced this headache, discovering inferior hinges were the culprit. His next call was to Schweiss Doors.
are 69 more of these doors at LaBelle and Airglades to worry about each day.” While it’s possible for large doors to be damaged during tornado or hurricane conditions, weather conditions were not a factor in this failure.
Vaughan says the door was sold and installed by a company that went out of business. His was a perfect situation emphasizing the need for hydraulic or bifold door buyers to do some homework. Vaughan was sold hinges that were not strong enough to hold the door in place. Weather was not a factor in the door collapse; no wind, no storm, just inferior hinges.
“It looked like the top hinges broke off starting with a structural failure at one corner which created a domino effect halfway across to the side of the building,” Vaughan says. “There were several planes in the hangar at the time, but they thankfully weren’t damaged. This calamity put the hangar out of operation for four months.”
“I can tell you one thing,” Vaughan says, who manages at Airglades Municipal Airport in Clewiston, Fla., and LaBelle Municipal Airport in LaBelle, Fla. “If we ever have to replace any other doors, it will be with a Schweiss door and not any other brand. There is no doubt about it. Getting a new Schweiss hydraulic door fixed this dilemma, but you can imagine, there
Vaughan was aware the installer of his door had gone out of business, so he started a search for a new door and he discovered Schweiss Doors. About the same time, a local tenant returned from the SUN ‘n’ FUN air show, where he saw the Schweiss Doors display. He told Vaughan about the solid construction of the Schweiss doors.

1. Imagine waking up to this knowing you won’t be able to get your aircraft out of the hangar. This inferior hydraulic 74-foot by19foot Florida hangar door literally fell off its hinges and had to be sent to the junk heap. It was replaced with a Schweiss Doors hydraulic door. 2. The Schweiss door is engineered for 175 mph windload and reinforced with a strong external truss. It also has a latching system that locks the door in weathertight to the hangar. 3. In addition to the loss of many thousands of dollars’ worth of useless door, additional expense was incurred to remove it and purchase a replacement door. The six-year-old hangar was put out of commission for four months. 4. Strong steel framework and the best hinge system on the market will keep this door working for years to come. 5. This photo shows the super strong Schweiss Doors hydraulic steel framework. Compare the larger cylinders and exterior truss of the Schweiss door to those on the damaged door, which didn’t have grease zerks for lubrication. 6. The Schweiss Doors hydraulic door delivered to Florida in express fashion is engineered for 175 mph windload and equipped with a hydraulic 2-speed valve for smooth operation when reaching the doors top height and closing operation. 7. The hangar is open for business with a new Schweiss Doors 74foot hydraulic door. The large Florida hangar had several aircraft inside when the door collapsed. Had a plane been leaving the hangar it could have resulted in a lost aircraft or even death. 8. The Schweiss Doors hydraulic frame is built with triple push tubes for added strength. It also has a hydraulic 2-speed valve that enables the door to slow down at the top and bottom cycle for smoother operation.

“We chopped up the door and threw it away,” Vaughah says. “It wasn’t good for anything else. It was just nothin’ but a hunk of junk metal sitting there. It wasn’t even an old door. It was installed in 2010.” The hangar now has a 74-foot, 3-inch by 19-foot, 2-inch custom-made hydraulic door from Schwiess Doors. The door is engineered for a 175 mph windload with a 12-volt back-up system and reinforced with a strong external truss and Schweiss’ hydraulic frame with triple push tubes. It has a hydraulic 2-speed valve that enables the door to slow down at the top and bottom cycle for smoother operation.
“Schwiess Doors are overly built, the hinges are 10 times better and stronger than the hinges on the broken door. They all have grease fittings, where Brand X doors didn’t have grease fittings. The Schweiss cylinders are about three times the size for the same size competitor’s door. “We asked our local aviation engineer to look at the Schweiss door from his engineering standpoint. He took pictures and we gave him a brochure and he said he was going to take it back to his engineering firm to tell them if they have any future clients interested in putting up a door to direct them to Schweiss. Our Schweiss hydraulic door arrived on time and in good condition. Schweiss made a promise to have it to us in three weeks, and they darn sure did. We were thinking it would be 60 to 90 days to get the door. I worked with the engineers at Schweiss Doors and they were helpful with suggestions and gave us all the information we needed.” Vaughan says a little homework could have saved a lot of hassle, time and money. Schweiss Doors is the premier manufacturer of hydraulic and bifold liftstrap doors. Doors are custom made to any size for any type of new or existing building for architects and builders determined to do amazing things with their buildings, including the doors. Australia AAA hosts convention— Launches Power Line Safety Program The Aerial Application Association of Australia (AAAA) recently held its annual convention May 31- June 2 at the Stamford Glenelg South Australia near Adelaide. Over 170 Association members, trade vendors and supporters attended. During the awards presentation, the AAAA presented its top award, the Ray Mackay Award, to Lindsay Keenan of Rural Air Work based in Moree, New South Wales (NSW) in recognition of his lifelong contribution to improvement of the aerial agricultural and application industry. In presenting the award and its heartfelt thanks for his contribution, the Association noted that Mr Keenan was also celebrating his 40th year in the aviation industry. In addition to always being willing to host industry, community and government leaders to demonstrate the capabilities and accountability of the industry, Mr Keenan has been a lifelong supporter of the Association and its stewardship programs, including Spraysafe and the comprehensive Aerial Improvement Management System-or AIMS. From learning to fly in New Zealand to managing significant aerial application companies in Wee Waa and then Moree, Lindsay and partner Susan established Rural Air Work in 2001 to service clients in the Moree area. The Ray Mackay Award Lindsay received is named after a stalwart of the industry who played a key role in the development of the Association and its members and the very early adoption - in 1985 - of the best practice program ‘Spraysafe’. The AAAA also recognised pilot Mick East with the Professional Pilot Award for 2017. Mick flies from Finley with Field Air and lives at Tocumwal. As a long term ag pilot, Mick is dedicated to getting the best for clients - but always with safety first. In a challenging, hazard-rich low-level environment - applying crop protection products at about three metres above the ground focus and professionalism are non-negotiable.
of wire strikes is addressed head on. Power lines have been a significant safety issue since the electrification of rural areas— and wire strikes have been a major threat to aerial application since the late 1940s when the industry began in Australia. While training and ongoing professional development play a significant role in preparing pilots to manage risks associated with low level operations around power lines, there are two key initiatives that can support and improve safety for the sector; the provision of mapping information on power line networks and the marking of power lines Over recent years, Aerial Application Association of Australia (AAAA) has worked to reshape the Australian Standard on marking of power lines (AS 3891 Parts 1 & 2), has developed and delivered world-leading human factor training courses and has worked with power line companies to develop mapping and marking systems and make them available to pilots and business owners. The AAAA has now launched its Power Line Safety Program that aims to encourage and facilitate power companies improving aviation safety and provide a way of both aviation businesses and rural landholders engaging in meaningful safety actions to improve safety. Wire strikes account for approximately 57% of all Australian aerial application accidents/incidents. While this is only a fraction of the total safety problem surrounding contact between vehicles and farm implements with power infrastructure, it is a significant cost to the industry and a personal impact on pilots
Additionally, the AAAA and Air Tractor, Inc. recognized the significant contribution of Essential Energy in NSW and southern Queensland through their power line marking and mapping programs developed with the AAAA CEO Phil Hurst with the Leland Snow Innovation Award. This award recognizes world-leading Australian initiatives that make a real difference. Essential Energy, Ergon Energy and QBE Aviation Insurance also announced they are Foundation Safety Partners in the AAAA Power Line Safety Program launched at the convention to facilitate aerial application operators and landholders marking power lines to make flying near them safer for pilots. At the convention, a new and very important safety program was launched; The Power Line Safety Program where the problem

Essential Energy’s Emily Swift and Daniel Germany (center) and The Aerial Application Association of Australia CEO Phil Hurst (L) awarded the Leland Snow Innovation Award presented by Air Tractor, Inc. President Jim Hirsch (R) for providing power line network mapping and marking to the industry.
Thanks to a strong culture of reporting, the AAAA has sound statistics from the Australian Transportation Safety Board (ATSB) that indicate 30% of wire strikes occur when the pilot did not know wires was present— something that can be addressed directly by access to better mapping and improved planning.
• Availability of energy network mapping that is region specific, along with ‘clean’ data that is easily uploadable, useable and updateable. Availability is entirely dependent on energy companies providing mapping in the same or similar way as Australia’s Essential Energy already does.

By signing the terms and conditions of the program, AAAA members agree, once the two baseline conditions above are fulfilled and available in their operational area, to comply with the following requirements over the first 12 months of participation in the program: • Ensure all relevant staff are trained on the human factor and related issues that contribute to wire strikes by attending the AAAA Wire Risk Management / Human Factors / Cockpit Resource Management Safety training course. • Request and pay for the marking of 10 wires identified by the company as a high risk to safety. • Use power line mapping as an integral part of job planning. • Encourage clients to undertake a farm electrical safety hazard assessment, including for bad wires for aerial application and to mark any bad wires they identify. • Implement a company power line management system (if not already active) of collecting wire information and providing written
expectations to pilots on how to treat particular wires. • Implement a power line management system (if not already active) to ensure reporting, recording and a safety analysis of ‘near hits’, incidents and accidents involving power lines. The system must include a process for immediate actions including reporting of any wire strike to the relevant energy company and ATSB. In addition, the company commits to passing on reports to the AAAA. Such a system must contain the original pilot’s report, chief pilot analysis, recommended safety actions and close-out comments. By achieving initial commitments and any subsequent additional milestones as outlined in the terms and conditions, participants will be recognised through Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum accreditation status as they mark more wires. The program will also provide encouragement and recognition for landholders that support the program

New Zealand’s first FU-24 accident and fatality by Mike Feeney After Wendell Fletcher (of California) said that he would require 100 firm orders for his FU-24 design, the New Zealand Meat Board said that they would underright the project in order that production could start. It was a lot more complex than that, but that was the situation and the prototype (ZK-BDS) was shipped to Hamilton at Rukuhia aerodrome flying for the first time in September 1954. I remember well watching Jerry Barden work on the project to get it flying and ready for the New Zealand test-flying program, which I think was carried out at Woodbourne by Cliff Andrers, who could not make the machine enter a fully-developed spin. None of the FU-24 aircraft were certified in the USA at the time. Instead, they were flight tested by a New Zealand pilot and were issued New Zealand airworthiness certificates. In the minds of some of us, including myself who flew the early versions, the test flying procedure seemed to be deficient in some respects. Jerry seemed to be a very nice chap and stayed on as the Fletcher representative for several weeks. Our local Waikato Times provided regular articles on the project that I still have all in one of my scrapbooks. The aircraft looked a tad odd and out of scale and/or shape; well at least to my eyes. It had a wide open cockpit in front of the hopper and the size of the entire airframe looked to be too large for the (relatively) tiny flat-six cylinder engine. This was identical to the Continental O-470 with 225 bhp fitted to the Cessna 180, which had a wing area of only 175 square feet. By comparison, the Fletcher wing was 330 square feet with a span of 42 feet. The aircraft had enlarged nose cowling intakes to improve low-speed cooling and a rather primitive cockpit canopy, which did nothing to reduce the noise

level or the leaking of rain. The cockpit rubber rear seal did not seal and seemed to be very good at sucking fertiliser dust down and cold air the back of one’s neck. That is why I often wore a scarf on frigid days.
to various degrees. Some were even constructed out of “thin air”... that is a small metal C/N plate which is simply suspended from two strings from the hangar ceiling at about the correct height at which to begin construction, the tailcone for example.
For some weird reason, Fletcher ran the six exhaust pipes through the cockpit via a sort of augmentor type pipe. It was all rather strange and extremely dangerous should there be an accident which involved the engine which was only inches away from our feet. Why the two pipes were known as augmentor tubes, I never did understand. But, they did help to warm our feet on a frosty morning.
I am not sure now, but I think that Fred’s company was called Adams Aerial Topdressing and was eventually sold to the rapidly expanding James Aviation, the forerunner of Pacific Aerospace Corporation. In those years, Ozzie James loved getting bigger and bigger...but, that is another story indeed.
Anyway, several New Zealand operators placed orders for the Fletcher FU-24. (the “U” is for Utility and was never changed to “A” for agricultural).
I do remember at one stage, Ozzie owned so many rebuilt Fletchers that a CAA inspector was somewhat bemused to observe two rebuilt, freshly painted FU-24s on which were identical registration letters!
First FU-24 accident One of the early ag-operators was the well-known Fred Adams from the South Island. He bought C/N 18 and registered it as ZK-BHP. On 3rd of May 1956, near Balclutha, Fred had the first FU-24 accident in his fairly new Fletcher and it suffered considerable damage, though I do not recall that Fred was badly injured. Bits and pieces of C/N 18 were incorporated into an airframe which became ZK-BSM. As hundreds of Fletchers were damaged over the decades, many were sort of rebuilt (created) into airframes
Topdressing with lime was common for the early years of aerial applications in New Zealand. The aerial spreading of any product legally requires that 80% of the weight/mass must be able to be jettisoned within five seconds. After the advent of (dry) granulated superphosphate, this was no longer a problem. But a product made by grinding limestone had proved to create a most dangerous situation due to very poor flow factors with hoppers that were not fitted with some form of agitator in order to maintain a reliable rate of flow.
However, 99% of us persisted in trying to safely spread lime from hoppers which were not fitted with proper agitators. Why the New Zealand Civil Aviation officers, or the company management did not take very strong steps to ban the use of lime, or require the fitting of agitators is a mystery to me, even after all these years and the avoidable deaths, cockpit fires and injuries. I experienced many battles with clogged lime in hoppers and survived by never flying into rising terrain that is so common in New Zealand, but instead
used a higher airspeed and a sowing direction across the lay of the land. I always landed with the hopper door open in the hope that the shock and vibration might clear any residual lime inside of the hopper, which it often did not.
First FU-24 fatality Kenneth Simpson was a very wellknown ag-pilot, as he had been aerial topdressing since September of 1952 and had several thousand hours of lowlevel ag-flying experience. The industry began in late 1949, but gained much strength during 1950 and 1951, so Ken was one of the very early pioneers. I remember hearing much about Ken’s crash, as I was about to make my first solo flight at the Waikato Aero Club a few days later. Ken was the 14th ag-pilot to be killed in New Zealand and the first to lose his life in a FU-24 on 16 of October 1956. Ken and his loader-driver began working on a lime job shortly after lunchtime. The airstrip was about four nautical miles
east of the small village of Mananui, just a few miles south of Taumaranui and a few miles southeast of the Echolands base airfield. The terrain in the spreading area was comprised of fairly steep hill-faces and patches of native bush with some rather solid trees. The wind conditions in the early part of the morning is often calm with patches of fog, but by midday there is always some wind; often variable amongst the hill-country. At 13:25 Ken departed in his FU-24 on the ninth sortie, but it was not until 13:40 that the crash was witnessed. The accident investigator calculated that the take-off payload must have been about 14 hundredweight (711 kg/1567 lbs). After several minutes, the aircraft was seen to be approaching the sowing area at low-level. The lime was seen to be leaving the hopper outlet for a few seconds and then the flow stopped. The aircraft was then seen to be manoeuvring at low-level within a cul-de-sac; a narrow

As the FU-24 hopper design was a concave shape from the top to the bottom outlet, the lime products tended to form a bridge over the hopper outlet. If so, the only effective way to take the weight off the compacted material was to push the nose down (partial bunting) to remove the “G” loading to zero, or less, then pull the stick back to avoid hitting the ground, or trees or wires. When flying at low-level, the process is very uncomfortable and rather dangerous in several ways.

gully. It was then seen to enter a turn during which it struck a tree and crashed inverted into a group of trees. The impact was absorbed by the cabin area and Ken was killed instantly. Fire erupted and the aircraft was destroyed. The accident investigator said that he found evidence of compacted lime from previous flights and there was no doubt that a serious overload had happened. There was no evidence of an engine or structural failure. He also commented that a change in wind conditions was likely leading to a loss of performance with no safety margin remaining.

With the hopper size of the early model FU-24, when 700 kilograms of superphosphate was loaded, the hopper was full and could be observed by the driver as he filled the aircraft. But lime is denser than superphosphate and the level of 700 kilograms would be well below full. In the front of the hopper was a small clear perspex window so the pilot could turn his head in order to attempt to read the level of product. It was very difficult to see clearly to check the load. In my experience, the window was far too small and became dirty almost after the first load. The only sure method of checking the payload figure was for the pilot to undo his harness and climb onto the wing in order to look down into the hopper. It was also difficult for the driver to check unless he climbed out of his cab onto the ground then climbed up onto the wing and advise the pilot of the load of lime; all of this taking an inordinate amount of time. The Fletcher FU-24 cockpit ergonomics I flew were also quite awful, as I soon discovered after having become used to the fine Cessna 180 in its ag-role. For some strange reason, the pilot’s seat was mounted in the centre of the quite wide cockpit. This meant that you had to look over the nose-cowl from the middle and there was no space on the right to carry your loader-driver or a farmer. The hopper lever was placed well over to the left, so your arm angle was awkward and very difficult to operate day after day. When carting lumpy chunks of damp lime, it was a nightmare trying to force the congealed mess through the manual hopper doors at the same time having to “bunt” the aircraft nose down at low airspeeds with almost nil climb performance. The IT’S ALL ABOUT AIR! entire job could become utterly ludicrous and highly dangerous, as fatigue gradually wore one out and many of us grew to dislike the horrible machine.

You’ll reduce costs and increase profit margins when you scale a multi-plane operation down to a single-plane operation. Air Tractor’s AT-602 makes it an easy choice.
