So Long Frankie. And thank you. For everything. Frankie Williams passed away on January 27, 2018. If you’re a part of ag aviation in Georgia, or just about anywhere in the world, you either knew Frankie or had heard stories about him. He was a legend. Not just for his skills in the air – but for his generosity as well. Frankie had time for everyone. He gave many a pilot their start in this business, and never failed to lend a hand or give advice anytime it was needed. He was our dealer, our mentor and our friend – and we will miss him so. Frankie Williams made a difference. And we are eternally grateful to have shared the sky with him. Frankie’s family has asked, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Wounded Warrior Project. As a Vietnam veteran, Frankie would be proud to know you did.

from the cockpit

Our losses Sometimes you don’t realize how important somebody is to you, until you lose them. It often takes a few days to understand what has happened. Unfortunately, at least five prominent members of the SEAF associations have passed on in the last 14 months. Eddie Andrews was from a multi-generation ag-pilot/operator family. He flew ag and was the main mechanic at Bruce’s Flying Service in Arlington, Georgia. In December 2016, Eddie had an unexpected massive heart attack and died. Less than a year later, his brother, an icon in Georgia ag-aviation, Fred Andrews passed away. Fred started in ag aviation many years ago when Stearmans were the primary agaircraft. His operation in Arlington eventually moved to Ag-Cats and finally Thrushes. Fred was very involved with the Thrush factory’s program when Fred Ayres was its owner. Henry Haddock of South Carolina met a sudden death in 2017 in a twin-engine plane that he was flying. Like the Andrews, Henry

was a mainstay with his association in South Carolina. It was jokingly said, and in good humor, that the annual raffle ticket sales at the SEAF convention would never be the same without Henry’s contributions. During the summer of 2017, a third generation Georgia ag-pilot, Tripp Everidge was killed while spraying in Arkansas. Tripp’s grandfather, Ronnie Everidge, who passed away many years ago, was wellknown and referred to a “Daddy Rabbit”, owner of Rabbit Ridge Farms. Tripp was relatively young and had a promising career as an ag-pilot, snatched away from him all too suddenly. Last and most recently, SEAF members and the GAAA lost a dear friend, Frankie Williams, owner of Souther Field Aviation and a Thrush dealer. Frankie was known worldwide and loved by all. He never had a bad thing to say about anyone. He flew, he turned wrenches, but more importantly, he always had a smile and time for whoever walked into his office.

I had known some of these men for over 40 years and Tripp since he started flying ag. I didn’t know Henry as well, being from another state. They all contributed to their industry in one way or another. And, their passings are our losses. None can be replaced. In three instances, our losses were caused by health and two by accident. Doesn’t matter, they are still gone before their time; whenever that is. No one wants to be depressed over a loss. So, let’s not dwell on it too long and instead celebrate their lives and all they meant to everyone’s lives they touched. With spring around the corner for the Northern Hemisphere, many ag-operations are gearing up (some already working) for burn down work, small grain fertilizing and other applications that not too many years ago where not practiced to the extent they are today. This is good for the industry. But, like any skill, if you allow your flying skills to go without ‘practicing’, then they are not as good as they were when you stopped for the winter break last year. Keep that in mind as you launch out on those first loads of the season and let’s start out with the intent to make 2018 a safety record breaking one. Until next month, Keep turning…

from the SEAT

Struggling with the government January has morphed into February and with it sees the return of the Southern Plains winter fire season. Predictive Services is forecasting a huge swath of the country encompassing most of Texas, Oklahoma and large parts of Colorado, Kansas and New Mexico to be under elevated fire danger perhaps well into the month of May. Last year these wind driven fires resulted in deaths of six people and thousands of heads of livestock. As a precaution, the Texas Forest Service has mobilized a large number of firefighting assets, including aircraft. By the first of February, there were eight SEATs, one heavy air tanker and associated aerial supervision platforms. Once again it appears the Bureau of Land Management has bungled the National Single Engine Air Tanker fire contracts. They issued a bid within a bid seeking cheaper prices which in itself seems shady; seemingly certain contractors had access to other contractors’ prices. This bears resemblance to what is going in Washington, DC these days where upper level management sets the rules and do what they want, not what is right. There have been at least four protests filed. We should soon see where this will go. The government’s experiment using Cessna Citation jets for lead planes has failed. It is

reported that on a steep pushover the engines on the Citation would hiccup causing the pilot great concern. The reason for the experiment was the King Airs and turbine Commanders that had been filling this position were simply not fast enough to keep up with today’s jetpowered third generation air tankers. I am sure the experiment will continue, as it is apparent that aerial supervision coordination is lacking on initial attack fires. The Citation jets were a pleasure to work with and I hate to see them go. The following is just a small example of how politics at the top affects the average little guy or gal. In January I was scheduled to attend the National Aerial Firefighting Academy in Sacramento, California. Hotels were reserved, rental car arranged and airline tickets purchased. The day before I was to fly out I received an email stating that due to the government shut-down the course had been cancelled. This one event affected hundreds of workers both government and civilian. I can only imagine the amount of waste globally, certainly in the billions of dollars

in aerial firefighting. On a large complex fire, one gets situational data on where you need to be on the fire and the location of other aircraft. With more aircraft complying with the mandate, it will only get better. Hope you all have a safe and prosperous fire season and I hope to see you in the mountains.

Marc

The ABS-D requirement for aircraft position reporting will go into effect on January 01, 2020. For several years, I have had one in my aircraft. With each season and more widespread use, it has become a valuable tool

770 Fire Angel poised for Australia by Jessica McCabe

In December 2017, The Aerotech Group, based in Kent Town, SA Australia, took possession of its new 710P Thrush. The purchase was made through Campbell Briggs of Statewide Aviation, Australia’s Thrush dealer, based in Moree NSW. The aircraft is powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada’s PT6A-67AG engine. This may have seemed an unusual purchase to many, as The Aerotech Group has been buying Air Tractors since the early 1980s and has been a big supporter of the brand. And it still is, currently having 12 Air Tractors in its fleet.

Managing Director of The Aerotech Group, Sam McCabe, says, “Our Australian Fire Agency had voiced some concerns in us providing only one type of aircraft for our aerial firefighting contract. Whilst there was no huge pressure from them, we wanted to respond to their concerns.” He also added that the 710P Thrush seemed like “a great value proposition”. “Affectionately, we like to call it the 770 Fire Angel. She’s a pocket rocket. The Aerotech Group’s maintenance crew fitted the Transland fire door as well as the adaptor box, that in fact increased the

hopper capacity to 770 gallons (2,900 litres), which we were pretty impressed with,” said McCabe. The pilot for The Aerotech Group, who has been putting the 770 Fire Angel through its paces, is New Zealand Kiwi, Shaun Sinclair, who thinks its performance has been on the money. “I’m happy to say it carried a full hopper with relative ease with good maneuverability and speed. The aircraft’s climb rate of 800 ft/min were achieved, which was pretty impressive. It started to feel a little uncomfortable when slowed down to 100 kts,” reports Shaun.

The Transland Fire Gate has a fiberglass AT-802 fairing, modified to fit the Fire Angel by Statewide Aviation based in Moree, NSW and was fitted to the aircraft by The Aerotech Group’s engineering and maintenance team.

Statewide Aviation coordinated the registration of the Fire Angel on the Australian registry. The aircraft was uncrated and assembled by the Statewide maintenance team in Moree before being

delivered to The Aerotech Group. Being a Transland dealer, Statewide Aviation worked closely with Roberto Rodriguez and Anthonie York from Transland’s factory in Wichita Falls, Texas to modify the fire gate and adapter box to fit the 710P Thrush creating the 770-gallon Fire Angel.

10” gate doors. It is hydraulically actuated using one accumulator and has the capability to perform manual or hydraulic jettisons (emergency dump). It has ports for foam injection. Its configuration allows the mounting of a spray system on it while the Fire Gate is installed.

The gate has a Transland/DynaNav controller with the capability to control both the Fire Gate and the hydraulic Ag Gate. The controller is set up using a touch screen for the desired drop the pilot wants, whether that is ¼, ½, ¾ or full salvo. The controller also allows the pilot to choose from Level 1 to Level 6 drops with the touch screen.

The 770 Fire Angel has a Transland adapter box installed that allows the Ag Gate to mount to it when the Fire Gate is not needed. The gates mount to the adapter with simple threaded bolts. Two installers can typically make the switch between gates in a couple hours.

The gate has dual, longitudinal positioned doors that are very similar to Transland’s

Shaun is excited about putting the 770 Fire Angel into action in the upcoming season. The aircraft will be used for both firefighting and ag-operations.

Shaun went on to say, “The Transland door coupled with the DynaNav touchscreen controller is very simple and easy to use. It gives the feeling of reliability. I have applied about 60 loads through the aircraft now (February 2018) and it has not missed a beat. The door and controller give the option of dropping up to coverage Level 6. Dropping at this level was not a violent experience provided the airspeed was controlled around 110 kts. From the ground, the drop pattern looks very similar to other SEATs we use and the Australian Fire Agency seems happy with the results.”

Thrush Aircraft begins exploration of autonomous air tanker Strategic alliance with Drone America anticipated to yield unmanned solutions to airborne wildfire surveillance and attack – and more. (Albany, GA) The arsenal of airborne tactics available to firefighters and first responders may soon grow significantly as Thrush Aircraft has formed a strategic alliance with highly-regarded unmanned aerial vehicle and systems manufacturer Drone America to begin development of the world’s first autonomous air tanker. The new tanker is expected to blend Thrush’s large airframe and airborne delivery system expertise with Drone America’s “Ariel” amphibious platform – resulting in an aircraft capable of delivering some 800 gallons of water or fire retardant, autonomously. The aircraft will also have the ability to conduct long-duration tactical surveillance flights over a fire to give firefighters, operations managers and public safety coordinators on the ground real-time understanding of conditions and fire behavior. “As the almost incomprehensible devastation of the 2017 fire season has shown, there is virtually no limit to the level of destruction to property and natural environments wildfires can cause,” said Mike Richards, president and CEO of Drone America. “We founded our company on the belief that highly-reliable, well-integrated autonomous

Thrush Aircraft has entered into a strategic alliance with Drone America to begin exploring unmanned air tankers that could one day soon supplement the wildfire attack capabilities of its manned firefighting aircraft, such as the recently introduced Thrush 510G Switchback which is now entering service with the Georgia Forestry Commission. systems can significantly improve public and environmental safety. Our collaboration with Thrush represents a major step forward in achieving that goal and we’re excited to be joining forces in the fight against one of our country’s most challenging foes: wildland fires.” Currently, only manned air tankers are used in airborne firefighting operations and they are restricted from fighting fires during night hours. However, it is during this “dark

window” that autonomous tankers can take special advantage of the cooler night temperatures and reduced fire activity to support tactical ground operations without risking the lives of pilots. In addition to tanker duties, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) orbiting high above other firefighting aircraft and equipped with infrared cameras, sensors and integrated communications equipment are particularly well-suited to systematically

In summarizing the new alliance, Payne Hughes, president and CEO of Thrush Aircraft, said: “Thrush prides itself in continuously bringing the highest levels of innovation and value to our industry – and joining in the fight to better control wildfires from the air is in perfect alignment with our recent introduction of the 510G Switchback and its advanced manned-aircraft firefighting capabilities. “Collaborating with Drone America now gives us the ability to enhance airborne firefighting even more by applying our design, manufacturing and flight test capabilities to a whole new generation of autonomous aircraft that can do things manned aircraft simply can’t do safely, or as efficiently. We couldn’t

be more pleased to be getting this new relationship underway,” he concluded. In addition to unmanned air tanker capabilities, this new alliance represents the next step forward in a strategic push to integrate national disaster planning, public safety and safe integration of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) into the National Airspace System – as well as a fresh look at current thinking surrounding airborne firefighting regulations and potential alternatives. Teams from both companies will also explore other unmanned heavy-payload applications such as humanitarian aid, disaster relief, remote cargo transportation and maritime patrol for which airframes from Thrush could be uniquely suited. Headquartered in Albany, Georgia, Thrush Aircraft manufactures a full range of aerial application aircraft used in agriculture, forestry and firefighting roles worldwide. Red Bull Air Race newest star: The Air Tractor AT-802A Fire Boss by Igor Bozinovski

The Red Bull Air Race World Championship is an official World Championship, accredited by the FAI - The World Air Sports Federation. The Red Bull Air Race features the world’s best racing pilots in a pure motorsport competition that combines speed, precision and skill. Using the fastest, most agile, lightweight race planes, pilots hit speeds of 370 kph while enduring forces of up to 10Gs, as they navigate a low level slalom track marked by 25-metre-high, air-filled pylons. It is a visual spectacle unlike any other - a pure combination of high speed, low altitude and extreme maneuverability! The pilots of the Red Bull Air Race can all be identified by their race planes. As with any motorsport, the unique paint scheme is there to show the team and stand out from all others. And this brings us to Porto where the 2017 Red Bull Air Race happened on 2-3 September and featured an extremely unexpected “racing” bird - the float-equipped Air Tractor AT-802A Fire Boss firefighting amphibian! Being part of the recreational program at Red Bull’s Porto race and flown by pilot Carlos Craveiro - the pilot with 24 firefighting seasons experience and the most Fire Boss flight hours in the world (4.500+ flight hours in an AT-802A with a total time of over 8.000+ flight hours) - the Air Tractor AT-802A Fire Boss overflew the Douro river on three occasions both days of the air race, amusing the crowd with a demonstration of its low-altitude speed (OK, it’s not a race plane, dudes!), agility and above all water-bombing firefighting capabilities. Interesting to note is this particular Fire Boss was indeed the 700th produced AT-802A Air Tractor. Configured as a single-seat AT-802A,

serial number 802A-0700, the aircraft that now bears Spanish civil registration ECMRT was rolled out of Air Tractor’s Olney, Texas-based factory 20 March 2017. After flight testing and granted with all necessary documents, the aircraft was flown across the Atlantic Ocean to its owner, Air Tractor’s long-time dealer for Europe, Africa and Middle East - the Spanish, Valencia-based company, Air Tractor Europe. The aircraft was outfitted with a pair of Wipaire’s Wipline 10000 floats at Avialsa T-35 EASA Part 145 maintenance, repair and overhaul facility in Valencia. The Fire Boss was promptly dispatched to Portugal to fight deadly wildfires there. During one of those few days of low fire risk, the Fire Boss wrote history as the first Air Tractor to take part in the famous Red Bull Air Race World Championship.

Before the turn of the century, the greatest part of the Southwest United States was made up of vast grasslands covering the rolling plains which were naturally managed by great herds of American bison, or buffalo. Wildfires were very much a part of this ecosystem. With no fences, wild animals could escape the flames and the light fuels often burned

out at sunset. Springtime brought nutritious new growth to the burn scars and the grasslands would help retain moisture in the soil through frequent dry spells. Between the end of the Civil War and 1900, huge herds of wild cattle were basically free for the taking and ex-patriots began assembling herds that numbered in the millions. They were valued for their hides, not meat, as refrigeration had not yet arrived. Cattle replaced the buffalo, which by this time had largely been exterminated from the Great Plains for the same reason. These massive herds of cattle were often held in an area until all the grass was gone. Then they were moved west to the next pasture and the process would be repeated. The result was a huge swath of the country was overgrazed in a very short period of time. The grass never recovered, but instead was replaced by invasive brushy species that did not retain moisture and caused wildfires that were not easily extinguished.

The leased AT-502 set up for Spike applications.

In the late 1970s, Dow Chemical Company discovered chemistry that would control these shallow rooted species known collectively as brush. Tebuthiuron prevented the roots from absorbing any nutrients resulting in the plant slowly starving to death over about a three-year period,

depending on rainfall. For rangeland brush control, it was marketed as a product called Spike and formulated as 20P (20% active ingredient in a clay pellet). The only drawback to the product was price with the cost of treatment often exceeding the value of the land being treated. The oil boom currently engulfing West Texas has created a unique problem for landowners. Ranchers have often spent generations struggling to make a living, suddenly have found themselves flush with cash and having to pay exorbitantly high tax bills. This has caused Spike applications to become a very attractive way to improve their land and at the same time create a sizable tax write-off. The company I fly for has seen this firsthand over the last several years and 2017 was no exception.

Treating hilly terrain with Spike. Orders for work to be completed by the end of the year started arriving in October. It wasn’t long before we had a little more than ten thousand acres on the books to be done from four different locations and we didn’t have an airplane to do it with, as my regular Spike aircraft had recently sold. Our first treatment area was just north of Brackettville, Texas and it appeared the closest place to fly it out of was Edwards County airport. Word soon came down that a lease aircraft, an AT-502B, had been found and would be delivered to Edwards County as soon as it was ready.

I was disappointed the morning the ferry pilot arrived and handed me a list of squawks on the airplane, no ITT, no Ng, no cabin heat, no locking tailwheel and the list went on. To top it off, it had small fuel tanks. Brush work often involves long ferries and every minute spent traveling and burning fuel meant one less minute over the treatment area. We got started on the Spike applications the following morning. The first pasture was forty-five miles away proving the small fuel tanks to be a huge disadvantage. We persevered and after about ten days the first job was complete. Next, the crew and I moved down to Marfa, Texas for a week of work, then on to Van Horn, Fort Stockton and finally onto Iraan, Texas. Through hard work and long hours, we finished with a few days to spare. Now, we await until next November so we can do it again.

hands-on flying

Spring SPRING! Old man winter is shuffling out the door, the edges of the snow trailing behind him like the hem of a long white cloak. Those cold, icy days melt away as the sun once again smiles closer to the planet warming the ground and beginning another season of new growth and the promise of another year to unfold ahead. Across the nation, flying machines are coaxed, pushed and pulled out of their nests and readied for the tasks that await them. The air is still cool and the sky has been swept clear by rain. It’s a wonderful time of year and we all love it.

Getting geared up for the season has come to its conclusion by now. It’s go time and there ain’t no excuses. Growers are out in their fields, sacks of seed are being poured into seed drills for the ground machine lovers or being delivered to the airstrip for those who want it done better.

Ag pilots are shaking off the doldrums of the winter months, coming out of hibernation, ready to work off those holiday dinner bulges developed over the winter. Hands are waving in the air for any extra seats while the ones already filled are firing up and getting started on the next several months of work. It starts slow. It always does. March is but the entryway of the upcoming season for most operations. There are still those standing by for good weather to come their way. They are chomping at the bit, staring out the hangar door, waiting in anticipation, eager to get going. I imagine

Since man learned to work the soil, he has lingered through the frost with his eyes searching for the first signs of green grass and new buds on the trees. Our ancestors built contraptions to help plow, till, plant and cultivate. They harnessed oxen, horses and even each other to get the crop in the ground as soon as the ground was ready to receive it. Thankfully today we have much better ways. There are tractors as big as grandpa’s house now, machines capable of doing the work of ten men in a fraction of the time and best of all... airplanes! We are of the generation who gets to leave the ground in powerful flying machines covering more acres in an hour than most farms of the past could have claimed in their entirety. Wholesale work done at retail prices benefitting everyone involved in the cycle whether they know it or not. Agricultural aviation spreads its wings in the spring like an

eagle taking to the sky, covering the depth and breadth of American agribusiness from start to finish. There’s always a ‘night before Christmas’ kind of excitement in the air around spring time. The entire agricultural community is hitching up its britches and looking forward with optimism that only folks involved in this marvelous industry seem to have. Last year’s trials and tribulations are left to last year. Lessons learned are applied and hopefully last year’s bills are settled and filed away. It’s a clean slate and a good place to start. There are generational farms out there, using generational ag flying operations to serve their needs. This year, the grandson of an old crop duster will be flying for the grandson of an old farmer. At the same time, and one of the things I appreciate the most perhaps, are the new, first generation guys and gals out there breaking in, trying to make their own mark. Young farmers, first time folks who threw everything into the hat to reach for their own American dream. The pilot who worked his way up into the seat of an ag plane, flying his first season.

If you pay much attention to the markets you’ll see a yo-yo effect that’ll make you want a prescription for Dramamine. Going into the spring season seems to be the most erratic time of the year for the markets. I guess it’s when optimism and pessimism come toe to toe. I’m sure there are people who are able to make sense of it. I don’t know any of them though. I wonder how long they last before they have to be locked up in a padded cell? There must be a hospital somewhere in Chicago with a special wing dedicated to the mental health of the commodities market people. The rest of us can only look at it like a dog watches TV, tilting our heads now and then to the funny sounds. However, and somehow, the markets have an authority on the what, when and how, of agriculture. The smart people usually have it figured out though, and guys like me just fly the airplane when they say to fly the airplane. As always, we look ahead and hope for the best for everyone.

There is another extremely sinister and potentially fatal condition that pilots can find themselves in if they follow a certain pattern- the condition is called vasovagal syncope (Pronounced vaa zo vagal sin ko pee). As I start to write this article I am convalescing at home with a broken leg, dislocated ankle and some facial lacerations. I’m not complaining because I recently survived the worst flight situation a pilot could find him/herself in. I passed out in a turbo Thrush at 150 feet AGL going 130 mph. Luckily the aircraft was trimmed out for straight and level flight before I took my involuntary three minute nap.

I say “luckily” because someone was definitely watching over me. I have become a firm believer in guardian angels. There were high-tension power lines, mobilized farm irrigation sprinkler systems, deep irrigation ditches and built up roadways all over the place. I was packing 40 gallons of Jet A fuel in each wing. The aircraft was observed by a farmer to, “...fly sideways (yawing) in a flat descending attitude until it hit the ground.” I must have inadvertently pushed a rudder pedal when I went unconscious, causing the inherently stable Thrush to hit the ground in a level attitude and slightly yawed to the left. The initial impact tore the gear off and banana peeled the three blade prop which trashed the gear reduction case on the TFE-331 Garrett turbine. The aircraft rotated 180 degrees and slid backwards down the flat, recently planted pea field. When I regained consciousness I thought I was in a dream. However the pain in my right leg brought me to reality in a hurry. My ankle was badly dislocated and x-rays later confirmed that my right fibula was broken. My helmet had left a noticeable dent in the windscreen support.

The doctor later stated the helmet undoubtedly saved my life. Long ago a Marine pilot friend of mine named Fred Cone convinced me that safety gear like helmets, flight suits and gloves were made to help pilots survive bad situations. Fred was on his take off run on a rainy night in his A-6 at Danang, AFB in Vietnam when a flight fatigued C-141 crew accidentally taxied onto the active runway. The subsequent collision lit up the night sky like the 4th of July. How do we know this-because a controller was able to take a night picture of the flaming wreckage without a flash on his camera. Fred survived this inferno because of his safety gear. He now teaches at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott and is able to motivate his air science students to become more safety conscious.

The events that led up to my “nap in the sky” were unspectacular. The events that led up to my “nap in the sky” were unspectacular. I was an aeronautical technology professor at a major university and in the summer I supplemented my meager teaching wages with seasonal agricultural or forestry contract work. This summer I had landed a job with a top notch Idaho operator that operated three turbo Thrushes-all equipped with the latest GPS swath guidance systems. This was top of the line equipment and the owner and his family were some of the nicest people you could ever meet. It was a job made in ag heaven!

This first flight was done without any liquid in the hopper. After doing about 12-14 touch and goes and plenty of high G turns, I flew west of the Aberdeen airport to practice swathing on a field and to familiarize myself with the new GPS swath guidance system. After about 50 minutes into the flight I started to feel a bit nauseous. This was to be expected since I had lost any G tolerance built up last summer spraying in Colorado in an Ag Cat. I flew straight and level with the air vents wide open for 5 to 8 minutes in an effort to settle my stomach. With my jeans and turtleneck shirt under the nomex flight suit I began to get a little warm. My aerobatic experience told me that this was not good, so I unzipped my flight suit to cool down. This gave me some relief and so like a true “ironman” pilot I went back to work on the field. After about three passes I started to get some extremely strong indications that my meager breakfast was about to launch itself vertically. I prided myself that I had never barfed in an airplane-even after doing 5 hours of hard aerobatic instruction in a single day. I became so knowledgeable about the upchuck process that I would give this guarantee to my aerobatic students: “I, the omnipotent instructor, am familiar with most all of the various symptoms of airsickness. I know exactly how far we can proceed before you will get sick enough to vomit. If I work you too hard and you barf in the airplane I will personally clean it up after we land.” In over 350 hours of aerobatic instruction, I didn’t have to clean up after one student. The main reason I became so knowledgeable about airsickness was that early on in my aerobatic business I noticed that the students who became nauseous rarely finished the 10-hour course. Barf was bad for business!

IF YOU WANT TO PREVENT THIS,

Again the “ironman” within me told me that “top gun, smart pilots” don’t barf. In my mind I was a top gun, so I doggedly suppressed nature’s call. Nevertheless, even a top gun has to mitigate his discomfort, so I decided to head back to the airport and get a drink of water and some rest. Besides I needed some help from the chief pilot to get the GPS commands to coordinate with the guidance light bar mounted on the engine cowling.

The intensity of the stomach cramps was increasing dramatically, but so was my resolve not to heave since I didn’t have a barf bag in the cockpit. The potential embarrassment of throwing up on the first flight of the season in my new boss’s airplane made me suppress the urge to barf even more. I had never heard of anyone getting into trouble by suppressing the vomit reflex. I was wrong, nearly dead wrong!

For an instant I recognized that I was in trouble and then the lights went out. The events from this moment on went rapidly downhill-literally. In order to get some temporary relief from my stomach contractions I foolishly unbuckled my four point safety belt harness thinking that I would rebuckle up when I came in to land. Without warning I suddenly became clammy and felt slightly light headed. For an instant I recognized that I was in trouble and then the lights went out. The sequence from unbuckling the seatbelt to passing out took around 20 seconds. I was rushed to the Pocatello regional hospital by some of the local voluntary ambulance firemen from Aberdeen. As I lay on the stretcher, I knew that the season had ended for me before it even began. I was so upset with myself for trashing that beautiful yellow Thrush and causing the owner so much grief that I could have crawled under a doormat. The confusing thing was that at the time I didn’t have any idea what had precipitated the unconsciousness in the aircraft. I had always been as healthy as a horse. Little did I know that over the next 45 days

The day before the accident I had arrived in the small town of Aberdeen, Idaho after driving for two long days from my home in Arizona. The next morning after having a small breakfast I went flying in the Thrush. I had not flown more than 10 hours since last summer’s ag season, but I was so enthusiastic about this new position that I eagerly jumped in the aircraft that morning and proceeded to pick up where I had left off the previous season.

I would undergo some of the most extensive and expensive medical testing. After all this poking, prodding and testing the specialists came back with the same conclusion-classical vasovagal syncope! Another blast of reality hit me as I lay on the examination table at the hospital. The moment after I suffered the unconscious spell while piloting the Thrush my medical became legally invalid. FAR 67 states in effect that any “disturbance of consciousness without satisfactory medical explanation of the cause” invalidates your aviation medicalbe it First, Second or Third Class. My flying career had suddenly gone in the toilet. The onus was on me to prove to the FAA Medical Certification Branch that I was fit to fly again. The medical staff at the Emergency Room at the Pocatello hospital immediately set about to determine what had made my lights go out. They drew blood to check for carbon monoxide poisoning and hypo glycemia. They did an ECG (electrocardiogram) after they relocated my ankle and set my broken fibula. Next came the chest X-rays and CT (computerized tomography) scan of my head. The results all came back normal and that is when Dr. McRoberts explained to me the term vasovagal reaction, which resulted in syncopethe medical term for fainting. While he was not an Aviation Medical Examiner, he had seen these classic symptoms in other people. Vaso refers to the blood vessels and vagal refers to the vagus nerve that controls heart rate and blood pressure and runs from the stomach area up through the heart area and to the brain.

The text Clinical Aviation Medicine states that the most common cause of fainting among airmen is due to a vasovagal or vasodepressor reaction. When this occurs, the autonomic nervous system causes dilation of the peripheral blood vessels accompanied by decreased heart rate and blood pressure, finally loss of consciousness occurs because of inadequate blood flow to the brain. It is not the same as G-induced incapacitation, but in my case the high G turns had help pool the blood in my lower body and when the vasodilation occurred I passed out immediately. So what should I have done to avoid bending that beautiful Thrush? Colonel Brian Funke, the Chief Flight Surgeon at Luke AFB in Phoenix, told me that I would have avoided the entire matter if I had just barfed! The act of regurgitating stops the autonomic system from going into a crisis mode and dilating the blood vessels. Another solution would have been to go back to the airport before the cramps became so strong as to precipitate the vasovagal reaction. Had I been in a high performance aerobatic aircraft I could had theoretically induced some negative Gs that would have facilitated the continuous flow of blood to the brain.

THE FAA AND SYNCOPE

My ignorance of the vasovagal reaction has had some very expensive and painful consequences for me. Luckily, suffering a vasovagal reaction is not a permanently disqualifying event for a pilot, however the FAA is extremely tough on anyone trying to re-qualify for any medical. After my accident, the FAA immediately grounded me until I could establish a reasonable medical explanation for my syncope. In addition to the ECG, CT scan and further surgeries that I had on my leg, I had to take

an EEG (electroencephalography) and a MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imagining) of my brain. A neurologist gave me a thorough examination and filed his report with the FAA. All the test data indicated that I was normal with no pathological reasons for the “disturbance of consciousness”.

So what should I have done to avoid bending that beautiful Thrush? The FAA Medical Certification Branch reviewed all the medical data I submitted, however they routinely obtain an opinion from an independent neurologist before they make a ruling. In my case, this neurologist came back with a negative report. He speculated that I could have suffered a seizure instead of a vasovagal episode and that the tests and examinations did not rule this out with 100% certainty. I was pretty disappointed since no medical practitioner will certify a pilot to this high standard. It seemed like my flying days were over. Luckily, I happened to converse with a former FAA employee who told me that in cases like this the FAA, out of an abundance of caution, likes to keep a pilot grounded for a while to see if any medical problems surface. I was lucky to have survived this uncontrolled impact with the ground. Had the Thrush and I been consumed by a post crash fire, no one would have had the vaguest idea what had caused this chain of events. I didn’t have time to make a radio call when I started feeling clammy

and lightheaded. That is why I call syncope the silent pilot killer. I am suspect there are unexplained fatal accidents that were caused by this phenomena and yet the NTSB report stated the probable cause was that the pilot simply lost control of the aircraft and crashed. What have I learned from these unfortunate events of the last year? Firstly, I now know what vasovagal means and how to avoid it in the future. If your body is upset and wants to go into crisis mode - let it self regulate, by vomiting if necessary. Leave the big pilot ego at home. Do what is necessary to get the job done and not bend the airplane and yourself. Secondly, when you haven’t flown for a while resist the urge to go balls to the walls and instead ease back into it much like you should do in any vigorous athletic endeavor. Thirdly, death can come swiftly and silently, so keep your life in order. You may check out very unexpectedly. Fourthly, once you lose your medical certification it is really difficult to get it back. The onus is squarely on you to prove that you can operate an aircraft safely. Fifthly, wear your safety gear-it will bring you home and never forget that this happens, so be prepared. “For me there is no comparison. Having operated other aircraft, I can say that the GE-powered Thrush is better in every aspect. The performance and stability of this airplane is unmatched. 1988 AT-301 in excellent condition. 7500 hrs TTSN. Strong running Younkin 1340 engine w/750 hrs SOH in July 2016. Overhauled carburetor, propeller governor, and fuel pump in July 2016. 0 (ZERO!) since IRAN on 23D40 prop (Memphis propeller, Dec 2017). Prop AD will need to be complied with 5 yrs from now. Wing AD was complied with in Dec. 2016 500 hrs ago by Georges out of Texas, one of the best AT repair stations in the US. No eddy currents or other inspections, other than visual, will be needed for 3000 hrs and gives you 6500 hrs until the wings will need to be done again. Fuselage is in excellent condition. 1988 is the last year of the 301 and this aircraft is only a few serial numbers from the end. When the plane was at Georges, it was found that there was a 401 fuselage instead of a 301 fuselage on the plane from the factory. It is theorized that the factory ran out of 301 fuselages and grabbed a 401 instead. The fuselage is in perfect condition with all reinforcements factory installed. There is no sign of corrosion anywhere and you are encouraged to bring your flashlight and check it out. New battery installed Dec 2016. The spray system is in top condition. New booms (Dec 2017) from Transland have never had chemicals in them. The CP-03 nozzles & check valves have been overhauled with new seals & O-rings. New Agrinautics spray pump (Dec 2017) coupled to a Lane electric fan/ brake. Backup spray pump as a spare will be included in the sale. Transland spray valve, loader valve, and 2” quick coupler overhauled Dec 2017. Everything in the spray system is new or freshly overhauled so you will not have any problems in the coming season. I have taken this system over the string and the setup is in great spraying configuration. Included with the sale is a Transland SwathMaster spreader. Currently the plane has an Ag-Nav Platinum GPS w/flow control, but I would like to sell the plane with a Satloc Bantam w/ Intelliflow system & L7 lightbar. Other features: Single point fueling, StormCutters (Hersey Flying Service, STC, new April 2016), Tires, brake rotors & brake linings have only 30 hours on them, New tail wheel tire, Collins A/C, Smoker, New spark plugs installed, New life limited bolts in the landing gear & tail, 325 gal hopper, Set up for a handheld radio plugging into the external mounted antenna. (Easy 20+ mile transmitting range, and 60+ reception range), 126 gal fuel tanks, All glass in good condition, Windshield washer, Up to date Weight & balance, equipment list & AD list. All placards installed. Will pass an FAA inspection no sweat. Included with sale are all of my spare parts to keep you going, worth about $10,000. See attached spec sheet for a list. Come out and look at this plane. I guarantee you will not be disappointed by a trip to see this plane, as everyone has commented on how clean and top condition this aircraft is in. Exceptional buy at $139,500 and I can deliver the plane for expenses. Call 406-239-8377. 1999 AT-502B-0580 N90375 -34AG, 8131 Hrs. TTAE, 1259 Hrs. since light OH, refurb, new wing spars. AT-602: Trim your overhead. You’ll reduce costs and increase profit margins when you scale a multi-plane operation down to a single-plane operation. Air Tractor’s AT-602 makes it an easy choice. The big 630-gallon payload moves you up to high volume production, reduces loads, saves time and helps trim operating expenses compared with two smaller planes. Step it up with an AT-602.
