I’ve known for at least a couple of years that the 2019 NAAA Ag Aviation Expo will be held in Orlando, Florida on November 18-21. It wasn’t until this summer that I began to realize the implications of this change, mostly the date change from the first week of December to the middle of November.

Here at AgAir Update’s offices, we have had to rearrange our way of preparing for NAAA’s Ag Aviation Expo by a full month. It has been a little challenging to bring advertisers in AgAir Update’s Show Guide on board a full month ahead of the norm with an earlier ad submission deadline. Now, the challenge is to bring our readers into the loop.

Hopefully, you have already booked your hotel room and are exploring airline flights into MCO. The longer you wait, the more difficult this chore will become with a vast reduction in options.

Several readers have asked if AgAir Update will host its hangar party this year. We decided it would be best to reserve that event for when the NAAA convention is held in Savannah, which will be in 2020. The reasoning is with the Savannah venue, many attendees will fly into Atlanta, rent a car to drive to Perry, then enjoy a scenic drive to Savannah after the hangar party. With the convention being in Orlando, that is not as easily done, with most flying into MCO. Perry is no less than a five-hour drive north of Orlando, compared to 1.5 hours south of Atlanta. Don’t forget, you will be attending this year’s convention in Orlando in November, just before Thanksgiving!

In this October edition, you will read about the Wells Family in Nebraska, and about an allnew ag plane being built in Tartastan, a province of Russia. I’m grateful to Alan McCracken for providing the article that was written after his visit there earlier this year. Aside from the obvious, the most interesting thing to me about the aircraft is it is all composite. It makes me ponder the feasibility

of a much larger ag plane being built from this material.

The article also reminds me of 25 years ago when Allen Tinnes (Colorado operator) and I visited Russia on multiple occasions, right after Gorbechev took down the wall in Germany. Travel in Russia at that time was truly an eye-opening experience. I have many tales to be told, but no space for them here.

In any case, during Allen and my travels in Russia, we consulted with Sukoi Design Bureau, the state-owned (regardless whatever they may have claimed) aircraft company on a new agplane, the Su-38. It, too, was all composite like the MVEN M-500. It also had the rocket-launch parachute system. Oddly enough, both the Sukoi original Su-38 version (see Wikipedia) and MVEN aircraft had many similarities. It wouldn’t surprise me if there was some sort of unspoken connection between the two aircraft.

In closing, as of this writing in September, the U.S. ag-aviation industry has suffered six fatalities.

I’m not passing judgment on any of these pilots and extend my sincere condolences to these pilots’ families and friends for their loss. However, without knowing for sure, I speculate a number of these fatalities could have been avoided. I once had an ag-pilot who also flew aerobatics, that I was rooming with at the time in the early 1970s, tell me that if he ever got killed flying aerobatics or ag, he sure hoped it would not be because of something he did. Think about that for a moment.

Don’t let your demise be defined as something you did, but shouldn’t have.

Way Cool In one of the last three AgAir Update issues, near the very front was an awesome photo of a “Reveal” with dark blue water being salvoed from the bride-to-be’s family; PT6 powered Air Tractor.

I thought it was a waaay cool way to do a reveal, but unfortunately, my wife eased that issue out the door into the recyclable newspapers, without realizing it was in that stack of Dallas Morning News!

Regulations Dear Bill, How are you? I hope well, of course.

The reason for my email is to ask you to inform me about how to form an aerial application company in the USA. What regulations are there, where to look for them, how to obtain reliable and correct information on everything related to the activity.

I am an Argentine operator with an AT-502 (two) and AT-602 (one). I have 30 years in agricultural aviation. However, our beautiful and dear country is going A 8 | agairupdate.com

through unbelievable political change that will affect our future.

If possible, please advise which state/ areas to begin inquiries.

In the month of November this year, God willing, I will be at NAAA’s Ag-Expo in Orlando, Florida. I would like to have a better understanding upon arrival.

Thank you in advance for your time, Jorge Val Vedia, Argentina Hello Jorge; I understand Argentina has many problems. Your desire to fly in the United States is understandable. However, it would be nearly impossible. You must be able to speak, read and write English fluently. You would need to convert your pilot’s licenses into an FAA Commercial Pilot’s License and a pesticide license for the state you would fly in. You would need a sponsor; all for just the Green Card/ visa. This only would allow you to work.

Owning a business would be much more complicated. Many licenses and certificates would be required. Even if possible, it would take more than a year.

The biggest problem to form a business would be no customers. I would have similar problems starting a flying service in Argentina; impossible.

I hope this has answered your question.

In the 1950s, Harley and Clara Wells settled into a small farmhouse just outside of Holdrege, Nebraska. Harley had begun learning how to fly in 1954 in a Cessna 120, all the while aspiring to be an aerial applicator. Harley readied his dream and, in 1958 purchased his first agricultural aircraft, a CallAir. Harley Wells found himself busy on the family farm, utilizing his new aircraft to treat his land and branch out into custom work. Wells Flying Service had officially begun.

Over the course of the next few years, after an accident with the CallAir, Harley added Stearmans to his fleet. The all-Stearman arsenal carried Wells Flying Service into the 1960s, where the iconic bi-wing aircraft were replaced with Pawnees. The operation ran two Pawnees into the 1970s, when Harley’s son, Dave, began helping with the flying.

Dave started flying in 1973 in Greeley, Colorado, earning his Private Pilot’s License, then eventually his Commercial license in 1974.

Immediately after obtaining his Commercial license, Dave began working for his dad, Harley.

1974 through the late 1970s were a busy time period for Dave. He married Candy in 1975 and the pair purchased Wells Flying Service from

Harley the same year.

After Dave’s second season as an ag-pilot, and now an owner/operator, Dave upgraded the fleet of Pawnees to 300 and 400 series Piper Braves.

He kept one of the Pawnees to help out in times of increased workload. The 1970s brought spider mite pressure to most of the corn planted in the area, and the flying service was treating mostly corn with insecticides and herbicides.

As work increased in the 1980s, Dave and Candy began raising a family as well as tending to the family farm and spraying operation. Candy migrated from keeping the books to teaching, which allowed her to spend more time with what, eventually, would be three boys.

Dave continued using the Piper Braves and began to habitually lease both Thrush and Air Tractors each year to help with additional work.

This exposure to other airframes led Wells Flying Service to add an AT-301 in the late 1990s. The Air Tractor was actually purchased with another local applicator, but Dave soon realized it was beneficial to have this additional aircraft and bought out the other partner’s share.

older Wells boys, Ryan and Nick, were approaching the end of their high school years and looking at going to college. Dave was adamant that all of his children received college educations (and would not be spray pilots) and so, one-byone each son attended school and then eventually returned to the flying service. Ryan and Nick are currently private pilots.

Ryan Wells graduated college in 2002 and returned to help his dad run the business. During this time, from 2002-2007, Ryan and Dave were constantly bringing in turbine airplanes to help with the workload until in 2007 they added an AT402 and a 510P Thrush.

Wells Flying Service traded airplanes off and on, from the AT-402 to a small stint with an AT802, then back to a 510 Thrush over the next

few years, trying to find the right combination of owned airplanes that, with minimal outside assistance would handle the now booming corn runs. After all, the area they treat is almost 80% corn! Wells Flying Service also hired Don Hills full time during this time, who continues to fly for the operation.

Nick Wells returned to the family farm and flying service as a licensed chiropractor in 2009.

The family farm (3,000+ irrigated acres of mostly corn and some soybeans) needed someone to step in and manage it, like only a family member could do. As of 2019, Nick is currently managing the family’s farmland, whereas brothers Ryan and Randy own the flying service.

for business expansion. The two brothers started a second location from scratch for Wells Flying Service in 2012, Ogallala, Nebraska. With this addition, Dave, Ryan and Randy increased the aircraft inventory to two PT6A-42 powered 510 Thrush and one PT6A-34 powered Thrush.

A steady increase in sprayable acres led Wells Flying Service to add Greg Grothoson as a fulltime pilot after helping the operation during the entire 2012 season. With Greg came his own -41 Thrush.

Fast forward to early 2014, as the flying service seemed to be expanding in leaps and bounds, an opportunity to acquire Pioneer AgViation Inc. in Minot, North Dakota surfaced. The purchase included an AT-802, AT-502 and AT-301. The brothers bought the flying service and nearly doubled the business during the first year with the advantage of having airplanes from both locations and staggered seasons between Nebraska and North Dakota.

Wells Flying Service expanded into Campbell,

Nebraska during the 2016 season, which brought with it an additional airstrip, office and an AT-502 and AT-402. This would cement the three locations (plus seven to eight satellite strips) for Wells Flying Service - Campbell, Olgallala and Holdrege, Nebraska. Pioneer AgViation II still operated from Minot, North Dakota.

Wells Flying Service had also expanded into ground rigs in 2003 when Ryan returned home from college, trying to mold the business into a one-stop shop for local growers. This expansion allowed the business to sell fertilizer. Realizing that chemical sales and the ground-side of the application business grew more rapidly than they expected, which was a great problem to have, they sold the fertilizer and ground-side to Nutrien Ag Solutions in 2019, but continue to manage the operation.

Ryan and Randy then acquired Wells Flying Service from their father, Dave, in March of 2019, with Dave retiring. The two brothers currently operate two flying services out of four locations ➤

and utilize four AT-802s (the latest acquired from Frost Flying Service in Arkansas), an AT-502, a TPE331 powered AT-402, a 510P Thrush and a Piper Brave.

The aircraft have a mixture of GPS systems, from Ag-Nav to SATLOCs, and all utilize a model variant of the CP nozzle. The seasons in their Nebraska and North Dakota operations begin in April with pasture spraying, then progress to winter wheat fungicide, to the corn run. Bugs in soybeans arrive sometime around August, along with pre-harvest of, spring wheat, pulse crops (Peas and Lentils mostly), canola, and sunflowers in North Dakota, to cover crop applications in Nebraska during September to finally a Tordon application on local pastures after the first frost. Wells Flying Service uses FlightPlan Online to keep all applications and work organized and efficient.

more streamlined loading caused the flying service to build a custom drivethru hangar and loading facility, as well as state-of-the-art office buildings on the Holdredge Airport, where current operations are located. Ryan and Randy contribute the success of Wells Flying Service to their team: Brian Sturm (Original owner of Pioneer AgViation), Jay Blessum (mechanic and an 802 pilot), Greg Grothsen (North Dakota Operations Manager and 802 pilot), his wife Melinda (North Dakota Office Manager). Kathleen Orcutt (Nebraska Office Manager), Alex Wells (Ground Operations) and all the seasonal pilots, ground crews and sales people that are a part of the daily operations.

Ryan and Randy continue the legacy their dad and his dad kept for so many years. Ryan and wife Melissa have six children, from two-months through 19 years old. Alex, the 19-year-old (and 4th generation) is keeping the college education tradition alive and is in school full-time while helping with the operation during his time off.

Randy and his wife, Jordan also are

keeping the generational succession in check with three children and one due in December of 2019.

Over the course of the last ten years, from each brother coming back to the family business to each brother finding their niche in operations, flying or sales, or being a business owner, Wells Flying Service is thriving. The Wells are truly doing it well.

Ten Russian-built MV-500s delivered

MVEN, a Russian company, is now ‘in the air’ having recently delivered the first 10 MV-500 agricultural aircraft to its customer RusAvia. I recently had the honor of visiting the MVEN factory in Kazan, the capital of Tartastan, Russia and was given a complete tour by Alina Rizvanova, who MV-500s on the MVEN factory ramp in Kazan, Tartastan, Russia.

is also the company’s Deputy General and Michael A. Nevelskiy (Deputy General Director). Alina also very kindly took me and my client from Rostok-on-Don on a tour of Kazan to see the Kremlin, a football stadium and other attractions in this beautiful city.

Kazan is now on the ag-aviation map with the introduction of this new agricultural aircraft which incorporates a number of new design concepts.

Recently, I met with the design engineer of MVEN and was asked to write about the company’s new aircraft.

Kazan is located on the banks of the rivers Volga and Kazanka 500 miles southeast of Moscow. It is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. It is located 55.79

construction made entirely of composite materials with the fuselage being baked in an oven using processes similar to modern passenger aircraft. The chemical hopper is in front of the cockpit and located near the center of gravity. The MVEN-2 Farmer is unique being equipped with a quickaction Parachute Recovery System (PRS) that enables the aircraft to land safely, even at a low flying height. I observed several videos showing how the aircraft lands safely after an engine failure at crop spraying height. Operational flight tests were initiated in the fields of Russia, Kazakstan and Ukraine with a high productivity of 1800 hectares a day at an application rate of seven liters/hectare (0.7 gal/ac).

of which 10 units have recently been delivered to RusAvia for aerial application work in the territory of Tatarastan and Bashkorstan. This aircraft includes the same design features as the “Farmer”, however with a cantilevered wing and increased load capacity of 560kgs (1232 lbs) instead of 350kgs (770 lbs).

In addition to the aircraft being equipped with the Parachute Recovery System, they both are designed for low volume spraying with the chemical mixture being delivered via a 24-volt electric spray pump installed within the fuselage powered by a high capacity alternator. This has the benefit of reducing drag, however it limits the spray volume that can be applied. Studies are underway to install a conventional propeller driven pump under the fuselage as is normal on other ag-aircraft.

MedEvac to Ag Pilot

For two months of the year, Amy Johnson flies as an ag pilot, and for the remaining 10 she flies MedEvac planes. Amy Johnson loves an early Amy Johnson and her Cessna AgTruck

morning — cool, calm, no one around and perfect for flying. “You’re just kind of in your own little bubble in the plane,” said Amy, 23. “You really feel like it’s just an extension of your body and the wings are your own wings… I get that feeling in this plane more than any other plane, you’re really in the same environment as a bird.”

For Amy, work as a MedEvac pilot began as a job that would allow her to take two months out of the year for her crop spraying business.

Amy Johnson loves an early morning — cool, calm, no one around and perfect for flying. “You’re just kind of in your own little bubble in the plane,” said Amy, 23. “You really feel like it’s just an extension of your body and the wings are your own wings… I get that feeling in this plane more than any other plane, you’re really in the same environment as a bird.”

Amy calls her white and yellow, 1976 Cessna Ag Truck her baby. She laughed and pointed out hair ties hanging from a knob in the cramped cockpit, a sign that this is a woman’s plane.

No one else flies it. For two months of the year, she eats, sleeps and schedules her life around that plane, logging gruelling hours as an aerial applicator. For the rest of the year, she flies a MedEvac plane.

Amy grew up on a grain and oilseed farm near Dugald, about 20 kilometres east of Winnipeg, Canada. Flying wasn’t in the family, exactly, but she said her dad, Vern Johnson, might have been a pilot in another life. When she was a kid, they’d park by the airport fence and watch the planes come in, or park on the road and watch crop dusters fly near the farm.

“I’ve always wanted to fly,” Amy said. “That’s my dream forever.”

At age nine or 10, Amy went to the Lyncrest airport northeast of Winnipeg for her first flight in a small plane as part of the Young Eagles aviation education program. After that, she returned year after year for flights. Amy began flight lessons at age 16 and flew solo before she even had a driver’s licence. She got her private pilot licence at 18, commercial licence at 19, and instructor rating at 20. In 2016, she began working as an instructor. She also studied business and aviation at Providence University College. She and her dad began a crop spraying business, starting with a ground sprayer. In 2017, they bought the plane.

For Amy, work as a MedEvac pilot began as a job that would allow her to take two months out of the year for her crop spraying business. She did a stint as a charter pilot then moved to MedEvac flights to northern Manitoba.

“We basically fly to any place that has a runway,” Amy said.

They’re two very different planes. On one hand, a Beechcraft King Air turbine with high-tech glass cockpit that can practically fly itself. On the other, a 40-year-old, piston-engine spray plane flown

entirely by hand. But the skills translate and assist each other.

MedEvac flying also gives her a break from the farm. Amy said after two months of intense crop spraying she’s ready to do something else.

This year she set a personal record by flying 22 hours in two days. That was 22 hours pure flying time, not including time spent preparing or cleaning afterward.

“It’s an exhausting job,” Amy said. “There are so many things that go on inside the plane that I don’t think people realize the workload that’s involved in crop dusting.”

There’s paperwork, talking to customers, and cleaning. While in flight, she’s monitoring the plane for height and keeping an eye on any obstacles while maintaining a precise line across the field.

She also has to keep an eye on how much she has in the tank to spray, and if any nozzles are plugged — something she generally only has time to do while in a turn.

“It doesn’t happen spread out over the two months. It’s like you have a 10-day period where this crop is ready for fungicide and you fly like 10 hours a day for a couple of days,” Amy said. “It’s so important that you are ready and the plane is ready for that little burst.”

Amy said she feels a lot of pressure because she’s the only one who can fly the plane, and farmers are counting on her. This makes it tough to take breaks, something she said she’s had to learn how to do — sometimes, she just has to get out of the plane for an hour.

“I feel very lucky that I get to be in an airplane that I own and so I fly it all the time. I’m the only one who flies it. I have everything the way I want it to be and it’s just like your own little safe spot.”

Pesticide-Free Agriculture Versus Conventional Agriculture Facts and Rumors

The global estimate is a world population of approximately 7.65 billion people. Feeding this entire population is an imperative concern.

The intentions of those who seek a healthy life and look for possibilities to find food produced without the use of pesticides are thoughtful beings. When they find such foods, most often with abusive prices, they are frightened by the price. This is ecause these foods are not yet produced on a commercial scale. Since no pesticides have been used, the produce sometimes have stains caused by fungi, bacteria and other anomalies that make their appearance often not the best.

There is no difference, whether it be nutritional or flavor, between organic and conventional foods.

According VITAL, 2017 on page 189, “Thank Pesticides for being Alive”, experts say it is difficult to differentiate these foods, even in the laboratory.

In addition to this factor, pests are responsible for significant losses, increasing the cost of production and resulting in a lower supply of products to the consumer market. Since the market always reacts to the good old law of supply and demand, these costs are logically passed on to consumers. Biological control is effective in some cases, but when it comes to large scale food production to supply a municipality, a state or a country, this is where the bottlenecks lie for such an attempt.

Perhaps it is possible that food can be produced without the use of any kind of pesticide ... I believe that; but I also believe you can do this for your own consumption, in your backyard or your farm, for example. When it comes to feeding an entire population, it becomes virtually impossible.

In Brazil, organic production is 1% of the total food produced against 99% production by

conventional means, which obviously reveals the impossibility of the Brazilian population to eat only organic products.

Recent IBGE (Braziilan Institute of Geography and Statistics) data indicate that the Brazilian population will reach 216 million people this year.

People who need to be fed. How is it possible to produce food for all this mass of people naturally and without the use of pesticides? Moreover, it is undeniable that Brazil is positioned as one of the largest grain producers on the planet. These grains are the staple food of a large portion of the world’s population.

Pests are responsible for significant losses, increasing the cost of production and resulting in a lower supply of products to the consumer market.

Commodities produced on Brazilian soil, in addition to serving as the basis of food for the national and international human population, are also the basis of animal nutrition that with sustained production help in the success of the country’s agribusiness. Brazil is also a prominent producer when it comes to exporting animal protein to the rest of the world.

Embraer Unveils Electric Technology Demonstrator

Embraer unveiled the company’s first electricpowered demonstrator in São José dos Campos, Brazil. The company also provided several images of the demonstrator aircraft that Embraer states will feature 100% electric propulsion technology, scheduled for its first flight in 2020.

The prototype, a small single-engine aircraft, based on the EMB-203 Ipanema, is still in the early stages of development and is yet to receive a full suite of systems and components according to Embraer.

The company announced in a press release that WEG would manufacture the aircraft’s electric motor and controller at the company’s Brazilian headquarters in Jaraguá do Sul, Santa Catarina.

Embraer has a cooperation agreement for the joint development of electrification technologies with WEG and will continue development in partnership with the company on the electricpowered aircraft concept.

The initial scientific development program agreement was formalized between Embraer and WEG in May 2019, aiming to develop “effective and efficient instrumentation” during the production and testing cycle. The advanced

technology will then be considered for inclusion in future aircraft.

The research and development partnership seeks to “accelerate the knowledge of necessary technologies to increase the energy efficiency of an aircraft, considering the use and integration of electric motors into innovative propulsion systems,” said Embraer.

The company further stated in the press release that “the electrification process is part of a series of efforts carried out by Embraer and the aeronautical industry aimed at ensuring commitment to environmental sustainability, as already done with biofuels to reduce carbon emissions.

By establishing strategic partnerships through more agile cooperation mechanisms, the company hopes to stimulate knowledge networks that will allow a significant increase in Brazil’s competitiveness and the construction of a sustainable future.”

Other partnerships involved in the project include Parker Aerospace who will be responsible for supplying the cooling system for the demonstrator aircraft.

Changes at Thrush Aircraft Will Bring New Organization and Increased Capability ALBANY, GEORGIA—After a record-setting start to the year, Payne Hughes, president and CEO of Thrush Aircraft announced that the company will be bringing new leadership to the company – along with a financial reorganization that will allow Thrush to increase its capabilities and to continue producing and supporting even more of its legendary airplanes around the world.

As an initial part of this restructuring, the company is today laying off some of its workforce, as it reconfigures itself for increased success ahead. It is anticipated that these layoffs will be temporary, and as the company becomes stronger during this restructuring, that much of the company’s workforce will be returning to their jobs. Thrush is continuing production and deliveries of new airplanes on schedule while the restructuring for growth is underway.

Planned Restructuring at Thrush Enters Second Phase Following an announcement that Thrush Aircraft will be bringing in new leadership along with a financial reorganization that will allow the company to increase its capabilities and capacity, Thrush has now entered the second phase of its planned restructuring with a filing of the standard petition for Chapter 11 reorganization.

This phase of building a bigger and better Thrush Aircraft is anticipated to be temporary, with the company soon to enter a planned Phase Three – which will include the announcement of the company’s new leadership team as it emerges in a stronger position for long-term success.

During this second phase, work at Thrush – including new aircraft sales, deliveries and global customer support – continues unabated with a

highly experienced workforce of factory veterans.

These same team members helped deliver a record number of aircraft sales for Thrush in the first quarter of this year.
