Right in the old breadbasket. As the world leader in getting the job done, we’re a proud partner of agricultural aviators who help farms large and small fertilize crops, control insects and eliminate weeds. Together, we’re producing maximum crop yields from fewer acres, keeping tractors off wet fields to prevent topsoil runoff, and spraying for pests and diseases three times faster than any other form of application can. The result is 71 million acres of U.S. cropland that’s protected, productive and helping to feed the world. All of which makes Ag Aviation the next best thing to sliced bread. from the cockpit Ken Edmundson and I pose before a wall mural that depicts ag-flying in Lemoore, California in The Vineyard Restaurant, owned by Ken’s friend, Lucy Jones.
If not for Ken The early 1980s were tough on Georgia aerial applicators. Some companies survived, others didn’t. Some of us closed the doors voluntarily and looked elsewhere for means of providing for the family. In my case, I was fortunate enough to sell out to my competitor and fly for him another 15 years, all the while building up AgAir Update. In the ‘90s, when travel money for AgAir Update was of short supply, I would share a hotel room with a south Georgia friend/ applicator, Ken Edmundson. Ken had a flying service in Quitman, Georgia. But, the grass was getting much greener on the other side of the fence and he too, closed his doors and made the phenomenal move to California seeking a pilot’s seat. He happened upon Roger Hewett of Blair Air Service in Lemoore, California. Roger hired the Georgia ex-operator ag-pilot and put him in an AT-502. Roger and mentor pilots at Blair Air Service took this daytime pilot and taught him how to spray at night;

taught him how spread sulfur dust; and taught him to fly ag by California standards. My travel buddy became a California agpilot. I rarely saw or talked with him as our life paths took very different routes. but, I had spoken to Ken in the past about visiting him for an article about Blair Air Service. He was a little hesitate, but said he would talk to Roger about it. Roger Hewett is not someone who seeks recognition. He goes about his business in a quiet way. However, Ken was able to convince him the article would be about how Blair Air Service came to be a success with diversification; things in the article that would benefit the industry, that readers would find interesting reading. Now, Ken not only flies the AT-502, but spends a great deal of his flight time in the AT-802A at Blair Air Service. And, he even has the distinct honor of spreading sulfur dust in a radial AT-301, at night, like those
who came before him in the early years of “crop dusting”. That is surely a necessary logbook entry! If not for Ken, I don’t know if I would have been able to visit such a progressive ag-flying service as Blair Air Service and write about it. I visit lots of ag-operations all around the world and I can say without hesitation, Blair Air Service is in the top echelon. Be sure to read the article in this edition of AgAir Update. Thanks Ken!

agair mail PEN AND INK This drawing from Richard DeSpain was made from my dad’s Thrush back in the late ‘80s in Carlisle, Arkansas. He was a friend of dad and in fact made another drawing of his Dromader at a later time along with a drawing of dad standing next to his plane - he also used that piece as part of a collage of ag planes/pilots for the cover of the Arkansas AAA convention in the early ‘90s. Neat to find this on the internet - I have all of these prints that I mentioned. Chris Almond Carlisle, Arkansas
Chris, AgAir Update commissioned Richard DeSpain for these drawings over 25 years ago. I believe he has done 14 or 15 different, limited, signed and numbered versions, 1-100, for AgAir Update. This particular one was done in 1992! —Bill

LETTER TO GEORGE LANE/ LANE AVIATION — CIRCA 1982
Remember, our product is service and the farmer, who we provide this service to does not know how to figure our costs - in fact, as we agreed this morning, most of the applicators don’t know how to figure their costs - or, are scared to confront the farmer with a reasonable profit margin based on their cost - if they knew. In fact, the farmer (most of them) can’t figure their own costs. They have been on crop welfare so long they haven’t had to. Remember this, - subsidy, deficiency payment, or whatever you want to call it is nothing but welfare - and at our expense! Does anybody subsidize us? Hell, no! Now, it has always been my idea that it was fair and equitable to charge everybody the same and to make the same profit on everybody. We do deserve a reasonable profit on our service! The only way I figured this could be done was to charge by the hour. It is not my fault that some farmers have small fields and others have large ones, and that some are one mile from my strip and others are 10 miles. I do not believe in losing money on a job that puts me out of range of a competitor’s price just to keep the customer. Let the competitor have him. I want to know what my profit is before I take off and I insist on a profit on every job. Therefor, my business charges are based on the principle of: A Fixed Profit Percentage
which causes a Variable-Acreage Charge, depending on field size and ferry distance. I charge the same hourly rate to everybody! I make the same profit on everybody! ---And, always a profit. I set my profit margin - not my competitor or the farmer. Now, the other way is this: A Fixed Acreage Charge which causes a Variable Profit Percentage, Plus Or Minus, depending on field sizes and ferry distances. This causes us to have to dicker with the large farmer and lose money on the small farmer. Remember, since the farmer does not know our cost or the margin of profit (plus or minus) we make, the only thing he can do to satisfy himself that he is getting the best price he can is to mostly lie about what he has been quoted by our competitors - further cutting us down and keeping us agitated and distrustful of each other when we should all be aware of this not falling for it - and be trying to provide a reasonable profit for a big investment and risky business. I’m not trying to be smart and say I know it all. I have tried this method and I like it and so do my customers. Wish I had tried it 35 years ago, but I took the prices used by the old boys in the business then. Thank God they had a good profit margin then and it lasted a long time. But during the last few years, the high price of planes, labor, parts, overhauls, insurance, interest, depreciation, gas, and everything else caused me to take a look at my position,
and what I saw didn’t please me - and still doesn’t - but I’m doing the best I can in a fair way for the farmer and myself. Remember those famous words you said at some of our price meetings - “I can’t raise my prices. My farmers can’t afford to pay more.” This was said without you knowing their profit picture. You hadn’t seen their financial statement, - all you knew is that they belonged to the country club, had an expensive hunting lease, building a new home with a 5-car garage, and were getting an SBA, FHA loan, CD’s, deficiency payments, while you were worrying about insurance, interest, FAA, EPA, OPA, and all the rest of the government, and don’t forget the harassing phone calls from irate people, too. But, you thought you were doing the right thing. Now don’t forget, you know farmers - they always lose money, blame it on everything and everybody, are never at fault themselves, make you feel sorry for them, and then pay you when they want to - always after everybody else and lately not at all. Now, from what I have said, you may think I don’t like farmers. I don’t! I don’t even like this business anymore, and after 48 years of flying, I don’t like airplanes anymore, especially bi-planes. Would you like to buy me out or do you know anybody down here that isn’t broke who can buy me out? Best regards and best of luck, Clyde Elliott Harlingen, Texas

All in the family by Graham Lavender
The San Joaquin Valley is situated about a two-hour drive south from the diverse and progressive Silicon Valley and historic San Francisco. Although only a short distance apart, the geography and culture change significantly. The hubs of Google, Apple, Microsoft quickly give way to vast farmlands filled with an excess of 20 crop varieties; from onions and pistachios to cotton and soybeans. Long before the technology wave of the 1990s and the beginnings of this computing mecca, Al Grouleff was establishing the roots of Grouleff Aviation and it would bloom into the multi-generational agricultural aviation operation it is today. Al served in World War II, flying The Hump in C-46s (powered by two R-2800s). Never having flown before, he joined the Air Force and applied for the Cadet program. While waiting to be assigned to flight school, Al decided it might be a good idea to take a ride in an airplane just to make sure he would like it. He found an old timer who volunteered to take him for a ride in a J-3 Cub. From that point on, Al knew aviation would be his lifelong career. Although Al applied for P-38 training, the Air Force decided they

needed C-46 pilots. It was getting late in the war, 1944, and Al figured active duty in a C-46 was better than waiting for the P-38 slot that may never come to be.
INTERNATIONAL
With less than 300 hours of total time, 20 years old, and after a checkout in the C-46, Al piloted from the left seat in a C-46 formation headed east from the United States, through Africa and India, into China. From China, the missions over “The Hump” originated, crossing the Himalaya Mountains into India. Navigation consisted of primarily an ADF. Loaded with cargo, fuel, troops and munitions, the C-46 aircraft crossed ”The Hump” at 19,000 MSL and returned at 21,000 MSL, barely clearing the mountains and in most cases in IMC conditions.
After the war, Al figured he could get hired by the Chinese National Airway Corporation. That was before Communism stepped in, derailing any such plans. He returned to his home in El Centro in the Imperial Valley. Finally, he landed a seat flying 220 horsepower Stearman dusters for Growers Service. In 1947, Jim Vedder helped him land a seat at the fast growing, newly formed in 1946, Agair, Inc. that was amassing a fleet of Stearmans. In July of 1948, Agair, Inc. opened an operation in San Joaquin. Al moved to San Joaquin to run the operation using several Stearmans. He quickly converted the 450-horsepower Stearmans to 600-horsepower Stear-Cats. The wings were modified at Vern’s Wing Shop to the 4412 airfoil. Vern also added aileron servos and aileron gap covers (seals). These modifications made the Stear-Cat a real performer that was light on the controls and could carry 275 gallons. In 1973, in one giant leap, Agair, Inc. took delivery of two AT-300s, serial numbers four and six. And, the following year, serial numbers 20 and 21. The first two were powered by P&W R-985s with 300-gallon hoppers. The second two were delivered with P&W R-1340s. The original two were converted to 600-horsepower engines. Al bought the San Joaquin operation in 1976 using their secondary name of Aerial Chemical Corp. Mrs. Grouleff couldn’t stand the name and within a year the company became Grouleff Aviation, Inc. With a fleet of five AT-301s with 350-gallon hoppers, planting, fertilizing and controlling weeds in grain, along with the regular fare of cotton and alfalfa work, Grouleff Aviation found themselves working the piston Air Tractors 1,200 hours a season. Al sold one of the AT301s and converted the fleet to two factory Bull Thrush with four AT-301s. The company needed the extra speed and hopper capacity of the Bull Thrush. Grouleff Aviation was constantly pushing Air Tractor for a 400-gallon aircraft that could fly with the hopper full on 600 horsepower.

When outfitting the recently purchased R44 Raven II for aerial application, the pump was switched from the traditional right side of the helicopter, and the tank was modified. This gives the helicopter more balance than the right-side mounted pump. Other modifications were the removal of most 90 degree bends in the plumbing to achieve a higher flow-rate required for some applications.

In 1985 Grouleff Aviation became an Air Tractor dealer. Greg Grouleff, Sr. had pestered Leland Snow so much for a 400-gallon Air Tractor to sell, that they had to take the first one in 1986 for their spray business. When, in fact, they wanted the first AT-501. It turned out the AT-401 became one of the best piston ag aircraft Air Tractor ever built.
granddad, Al, and soon enough most all applications were completed during the dusk-to-dawn period.
From that point, Grouleff Aviation upgraded their equipment with Air Tractors, through the AT-802 and now operate two AT-502Bs and two Robinson R44 Raven II helicopters.
All Grouleff Aviation fleet have additional equipment (i.e. lights) to safely and effectively perform nighttime aerial applications. The AT502s are uniquely setup for liquid and dry work, including sulfur dust. Grouleff Aviation applies about 500,000 lbs a year. The entire fleet of airplanes and helicopters have SATLOC Bantams with AutoCal flow control units.
Grouleff Aviation is a multi-generational operation. Al is still at the office along with sons Don and Greg. Greg manages the day to day office operations and since 2011 they have had the help of Greg Grouleff, Jr.
San Joaquin crops are as diverse as the big city of San Francisco to the north; onions, garlic, lettuce, tomatoes, alfalfa, cotton, almonds, pistachios, grapes...over 20 different varieties.
Greg, Jr. is on his sixth season of ag-flying. Starting off his career in the AT-502, Greg did his first two seasons strictly in the airplane. After a push from local growers and PCAs (Pest Control Advisor), Grouleff Aviation added a Robinson R44 Raven II to their fleet. In the fall of 2016, Grouleff Aviation added a second, brand new Robinson R44 Raven II. Greg, Jr. transitioned to the helicopter and has spent the last three seasons mostly flying the Robinson at night.
“There are nights when I have 10 jobs, each a different crop,” comments Greg, Jr.
Night flying is not unique to the San Joaquin Valley, but a necessity. Matter of fact, night aerial application was thought to be pioneered in this location. George Willett is given credit for making the first night aerial application in 1947 in a Stearman he modified with two 450-watt lights mounted on the “N” strut. This caught the attention of Greg, Jr.’s
IF YOU WANT TO PREVENT THIS,
Over 90% of the work is flown from the Grouleff’s home base in San Joaquin. The operation “leap-frogs” nurse trucks (using two with one always ahead of the other for the next job) for the helicopter, so downtime is minimized. The helicopter can continue to operate and not wait on support equipment. Grouleff Aviation has a long history in agricultural aviation. From the 1940s to today, Al Grouleff was a pioneer in nighttime aerial applications, an integral part of the Air Tractor development and realworld testing and a voice for the eventual use of SEAT aircraft for firefighting. His sons, Don and Greg, Sr. and his grandson Greg, Jr., continue his business alongside him.

Greg Jr. and wife Heather have just welcomed the fourth generation into the Grouleff Aviation family, Adelie Eve Grouleff. However, the young Grouleff’s are going to have to share! Greg Jr. met Heather Stone (as the Stone in Southeastern Aircraft, an Air Tractor dealer in south Florida) during an NAAA convention in Savannah, Georgia. The two met at random on River Street, then realized not only were they in the same business, but that their grandfathers were close friends, as well as knowing their parents. Heather is the granddaughter of the late Mr. Chuck Stone, and the daughter of Rick and Mary Stone. Heather and Adelie are regulars at the office of Grouleff Aviation, where they truly are keeping it in the “family”.

Diversification works in California by Bill Lavender
A New Zealand native with a father who was a top dressing pilot (the New Zealand term for aerial fertilizer spreading) flying a Fletcher FU24, it is no surprise that when Roger Hewett arrived in the United States 46 years ago that he would search out an ag-operation for employment. Roger signed on with Lakeland Dusters in Corcoran California as an ag-pilot in 1971. Twenty years later, he purchased Blair Air Service in Lemoore, California in 1991. The spraying operation was originally formed in the 1950s. Roger has grown the company from a single AT-400 Air Tractor to seven Air Tractors; two AT-502As with PT6A45 engines, two AT-502Bs with PT6A-34AG engines, two AT-802As with PT6A-65AG engines and one AT-301 with a P&W R-1340 radial engine, fondly nicknamed “Old Thunder”. Two of the AT-502s came with the recent purchase of Hale Aviation in Huron, California. Hale Aviation was bought in partnership with longtime employee (15 years) Ryan Boucher. In addition to the fixed wing aircraft, Blair Air Service operates three OH-58 helicopters with a fourth one coming online later in 2017. The OH-58 is a military version of the popular Bell 206 Jet Ranger. Supporting the OH-58 as a backup sprayer, the company has a Bell 47 and uses a Hughes 300 for field spotting. “At Blair, we believe the aerial application industry in California is moving toward using more helicopters. This is because of urbanization and the need to be considerate of the public. The helicopters are quieter, turn closer to the application site and all around less visible to the public, especially during night operations,” explains Roger. “We recognized the need to use helicopters for sensitive area spraying about seven years ago. That need has increasingly grown with each year since.” The helicopters are outfitted with Isolair spray systems, Auto-Cal flow controllers and Kawak hydraulics to power the spray pump. Agricultural Pest Control Advisors (PCAs) provide variable rate prescriptions for the helicopters. Most prescriptions are written for growth regulators on cotton. One Air Tractor is outfitted with Air Repair’s variable-rate gate. It is in
Sulfur bags waiting for the next Blair Air Service aircraft. The facility has offices, storage and maintenance with a drive-through parking and loading area. the experimental stages of making variable rate fertilizer applications based on ground speed. The GPS units used in the aircraft are SATLOCs with a TracMap unit in the AT-301. Both helicopters and fixed wing aircraft are used for frost patrol. This diverse fleet of ag-aircraft requires two full-time helicopter pilots, with the addition of a third later this year, and five Air Tractor pilots. Blair Air Service pilots have flown as much as 1,200 hours during the year-round season. However, a more typical annual flight time is about 800 hours. The busiest time of the year is from June through September. But, in recent years there has been an increase in applications in the spring on almond tree blooms. In the last few years, there has been a dramatic increase in almond tree orchards maturing into production.

Service, we had an accident with the AT-400. For its replacement, we decided on our first AT-502A because we needed the extra performance and full hopper capability. Not long after that, we added the second AT-502A. So, our “As” have been around for many years and are still meeting our needs.”

the choice of chemicals and application rate, as that responsibility falls on the PCA. Flight operations are conducted within a 60-mile radius of the Lemoore base with most applications within 25-30 miles. However, for more efficiency, seven to eight satellite air strips are used.
Joel Gibson, Jesse Lowrey, and Louis Estanol: Joel and Louis are IA mechanics and keep the helicopters in the air. Also, they are refurbishing several OH58s to bring into the fleet. Jessie is one of the two helicopter spray pilots. To say that applying pesticides and fertilizers in California can be challenging would be an understatement. Whether it be by ground or air, stringent regulations are in place that make operations difficult; ranging from buffer zones to protect farm workers and the public to having a PCA approval for every application. Working with PCAs can require a degree of coordination, however, it does take away some of the responsibility of the application when it comes to
Application rates range from 5-100 gallons per acre (GPA). A variety of crops are treated that include cotton, tomatoes, field corn, grain, almonds, pistachios, walnuts and onions. However, typical application rates are 5-10 GPA. There are a few oddity applications that require extreme application rates by air; an application for onions may need 40 GPA. Often, tomatoes are “whitewashed” with an application of Surround at 100 GPA. This is an application that covers the tomato with a white milky film that protects it from the sun. A Transland spreader is used for this liquid application. Even walnut trees sometimes require this high rate application to protect the nuts in the upper parts of the tree. Another unique application made by Blair Air Service is to control curly top virus that can infect tomato plants causing them to wilt. The virus is transmitted by sugar beet leafhoppers. The state of California has a program that provides shape files for applications in the foothills on the western side of the San Joaquin Valley. This is where the leafhopper resides. The state scouts for the leafhopper, creates the shape file and orders an application of eight ounces of malathion mixed in one gallon of water per acre. The applications are funded by a state levy on tomatoes sold.

An application that is familiar to California operators, but not so much to other ag-operations is sulfur dusting. This dust application, from the heritage of crop dusting, is made at 30-40 pounds per acre. Traditionally, the AT-301 was used for this application, but recently one of the AT502Bs has been dedicated to this complex application. Before the AT502B was put to work dusting sulfur, its engine received a modification to protect it against corrosion. A silver coated shaft sleeve in the engine was replaced with a steel sleeve. Sulfur dust is highly reactive to silver. Additionally, an electrical grounding cable is attached to the aircraft to release any static electricity before loading the sulfur after a flight. Even so, the risk of a hopper fire is always present. 95% sulfur dust is not only corrosive, but highly flammable with a very low ignition point. In May, things change at Blair Air Service. The daytime outside air temperature has started to increase and the relative humidity begins to drop. There are more farm workers in the fields and bees are active during the day. These four factors are primary reasons applications start switching from daytime to nighttime. About 5 p.m., farm workers begin to leave the fields, the bees return to their hives and outside air temperature and relative humidity become more favorable for aerial applications. Blair Air Service’s aircraft start to prepare for their nighttime missions. Depending on the workload, flying can last until dawn. Blair Air Service also offers full application services through its sister company, Blair Ground Service. This includes an extensive list of ground spraying equipment; 34 air blast orchard sprayers, 12 John Deere Hi-Cycle 6000 and 6500 series sprayers and four John Deere
An interesting way to discharge static electricity from the dedicated sulfur dusting AT-301. The cable is connected to the airframe at the axle and just lightly touches the ground when taxing. 4710 sprayers with 90-foot booms and 800-gallon spray tanks. For dry applications, the list includes four dry, flotation spreader trucks with one that has an air blower to disperse seeds, seven tractors with tank and booms, five pull behind spreaders and nine support water trucks with 2,800-gallon water capacity. All total, Blair Ground Service has more than 75 ground application equipment and support units.

Mike Irigaray is the chief airplane mechanic guru at Blair Air Service, whether it be an Air Tractor with a tired R-1340 or a more modern PT6A, he’s the person that keeps the company’s fleet in the air. Also, Chris Gibson, not pictured, has been with Blair Air Service almost from day one since Roger Hewett bought Blair Air Service and has been a valuable asset for aircraft maintenance. Operating an application service in California is no easy task. Expanding operations from a single ag-aircraft to a fleet of fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft and a large diversified ground spraying operation cannot be the work of one person. Although Roger Hewett is the man at the helm at Blair Air Service and Blair Ground Service, the 75+ teamoriented employees are primarily what makes the company a success in a challenging California environment.

The bug It was a buggy night. Our runway was adjacent to a recently cut wheat field. The days were long, hot and dusty. As the sun sank below the horizon, the air cooled slightly. The irrigation canal that flowed along the other side of the runway was full and drew every creature within smelling distance to it.
After a couple loads, I needed to get out of the airplane and adjust my nozzles. When I exited the cockpit I laid my helmet on the seat as I usually do and proceeded to take care of the business at hand. It does feel good to get out and stretch now and then.
The bugs were so thick they caused the loader crew problems. During takeoff, in the Thrush’s lights it looked like you were plowing through a snow blizzard.
I climbed back in the cockpit, strapped in and innocently squished my helmet back onto my head, squirming it around a little to get it snug and to get my odd shaped ears folded up into the correct position. The hopper was full. Fuel was good. The runway clear and the throttle went forward.
Unbeknownst to me however, something else was taking place. Something sinister. Something dark. Something that would soon threaten my very sanity. Something was crawling into my helmet. Some insidious little creature, hiding there, waiting...

Mentally combating the thing digging into my scalp, I made my passes. They seemed so long. This load was taking way too long! It dug here and then dug there. Growing more aggressive, perhaps more hungry while the seconds turned to minutes. “Scratch ... scratch ... scratch ...” Then it made its way toward my left ear! My mind screamed in protest! NO! NO! NO! If it made it in there I was finished for sure! There would be no way to fight back once it penetrated my ear! I pulled the stick back shaking my head violently. Desperately climbing above the wires, I reached up and shoved my helmet side to side and fore and aft. I jammed my finger between my ear cup and my skull and tried to engage it in a hand to hand battle, but it retreated out of reach. I thought of yanking my helmet off and trying to forcefully evict it, but I only have so many hands and the upper air was a little rough to leave the airplane to its own volition even for a moment. So I pressed on and gritted my teeth a little harder. I had a job to do. A mission to accomplish. Even so, the battle raged inside my helmet and I felt myself growing more anxious. The nuisance of it faded into pain and
pain became agony! “Scratch ... scratch ... scratch ... crawl ... crawl ... crawl ...” Every little voice in my mind cried out in protest, “Make it stop! Make it stop!” I imagined the beastly little thing tearing shreds from my sweaty scalp, or maybe boring a tiny hole into my brain taking over my conscience in some sort of science fiction way that would cause me to become one of ‘them’. It was winning the battle and I still had forty acres left to spray! Thinking back to biology class, I recalled some creatures complete their life cycle by laying eggs in the flesh of a hapless victim, dooming the poor sucker to being an unwilling incubator for its organ eating larvae. I shook the thought away immediately! Something warm and wet dripped down the side of my face. I moved my hand there hoping it wasn’t blood! Nope. Just more sweat. Whew! My hands started to shake as I lined up for my last pass. Snatching the money handle closed, I swung the airplane around to make a quick, if sloppy, headland pass and poured on the coals to get back to the runway pronto! When the airplane finally came to rest next to the loader truck, I ripped my helmet from my head and dug my hands into the spaces of it. My fingers grasped a wriggling little thing with a hard shell and pincers on the front of its head. It looked at me accusingly through whatever it used as eyes, as I angrily squished it between my fingers. Victory at last! The question still remains however concerning its ‘life cycle’... Fly well, stay safe and check your helmet!

up my spine as it relocated to different places in my helmet. My head shook involuntarily, as the nerves in my scalp reacted to the beast’s attacks. Yes, it had transformed from bug to beast in only a few short seconds. A metamorphosis of sorts. Probably a result of absorbing some sort of remote enzyme from my skin. It prowled around, searching out whatever it was looking for. Perhaps an opportune spot on my cranium that would grant it access to my brain? “scratch ... scratch ... scratch ... crawl ... crawl ... crawl, scratch ... scratch ... scratch ...” There was nothing I could do. I was helpless. My only recourse was to grit my teeth and just try to outlast the thing.

Female Brazilian ag-pilot visits U.S. operation I am writing to you now, directly from Caldwell, a small town in the state of Idaho. The region here is known as the Treasure Valley. A conservative and quiet atmosphere is prevalent here. To my delight, I see crops that are a complete novelty for me: mint, alfalfa, turnip, mustard, beet, clover and hops. There are others that I am familiar as well: onions, corn and carrots. Unlike Brazil, my home country, much of the sugar here is made from sugar beets, and the taste is identical to sugar made from
sugarcane. But the highlight of the region is potatoes, since Idaho is the largest producer of potatoes in the country. The precious
potatoes need to be preventively sprayed with insecticides, since they are under constant attack by the relentless psyllid (resembling a small spittlebug). These insects are vectors of Zebra Chip, a disease which causes serious damage to productivity. When in contact with the potatoes, the insect secretes a toxic saliva and there is the contamination. During the inspection, if a contaminated potato is found, all the cargo is condemned. The work of the agricultural pilots here includes the application of fertilizer (solid

Another novelty that I saw here for the first time was the application of copper after a heavy rain or hail storm, the copper on the onion crops helps them to recover quickly from the “thump”. Those who work with aerial spraying in this region always seek to have a reserve of copper for emergencies. In addition to insects, other pests like mites and aphids prowl the crops. Most Treasure Valley businesses have two aircraft. Around here, there are about 8 to 10 turboprops and some 6 piston airplanes (mostly radials). The rate of application of the pesticides seemed surprisingly high compared to that of Brazil: 10 gallons per acre. I initially thought it was because of the high temperatures (I’ve seen variations ranging from unbelievable 38 degrees C to zero!). But, I was wrong...even with high temperatures and low relative humidity, the large amount of water required is to the recommendation of the agronomists and sometimes the product label.
It is also common for the pilot to spray the same field more than once, as certain defenses can not be mixed. Then in these cases a separate charge is made for fungicide and another for insecticide, for example.
in Brazil, some crops are located at the foot of these mountains, demanding more attention from the pilot, especially for having an operation that was totally surprising and admirable for me: night flights! In Brazil, we can operate from half an hour before sunrise until half an hour after sunset. This rule does not exist here.
Another novelty that I saw here for the first time was the
Bill Hubler, with more than 50 years of experience in agricultural activity, was already flying at night 50 years ago. The company that hosted me operates with night vision goggles. They are the first in the region to use this technology, which is not a requirement for flying at night, but which, according to the pilots, greatly increases the safety of the operation. Because the equipment restricted to the pilots who have the certification, I could not try them, but the description given to me is that the sensation is like daytime! According to the pilots, the night vision goggles allow even the stars to be seen.
application of copper after a heavy rain or hail storm I had the opportunity to visit a company and see a little of their work dynamics. Currently, the company operates three turboprop airplanes and when demand requires, a fourth aircraft integrates the team. The region has flat stretches and others interspersed by mountains, which gives it the characteristic valley. It is also intersected by the Snake River.
No doubt fantastic equipment that promotes a considerable increase of assertiveness in decision making and performance in the

aerial application activity, obviously reducing the fatigue and the stress of the one who flies at night. The weight of the equipment is about 590 grams and operates with batteries that last from 40 to 50 hours. Although it is not mandatory to operate with this tool, pilots need specific training and the cockpit needs to be certified, as well as GPS, since these glasses change the perception of the lights. Once again, I see myself before a new world where I find similarities and novelties. Once again I confirm the deserved respect we should have for the rural community and especially for agricultural aviation. I am proud to be part of this industry where seeds and sweat are mixed. The man who works in the field, whether by planting or flying, has common traits that go far beyond nationality. Juliana Torchetti, 37, began her aviation career as a flight instructor. She flew as a Boeing 737 co-pilot and 727 freighter. Her passion for agricultural aviation called and she decided to change her aviation career. Now, as a third year agricultural pilot flying an Ipanema in Brazil, she feels that she has began her dream as an ag-pilot. Her view of ag-aviation is with discipline and good humor to handle the daily challenges of the profession.
Editor’s note: Juliana Torchetti has been smitten by the “love bug”. I extend to her a warm congratulations for her recent wedding to Joe Coppick, an ag-pilot flying in Idaho. I don’t know Juliana’s future plans, but she has “hooked up” with a great guy that I’ve known for years. I wish both Juliana and Joe a lifetime of happiness.

Trade unions and operators are mobilized to correct misinformation about the agricultural aviation and bad regulations. By Marcos Paulino
(Translated from Portuguese) Agricultural aviation is at risk in Brazil. Legislation aimed at banning aerial spraying of agricultural pesticides has mobilized sectors linked to agricultural activity in the country. At the National Congress, there are 26 propositions that can have a negative impact for the industry, of which 12 bring proposals that limit or prohibit aerial spraying of pesticides. In addition, 12 state bills and four municipal bills that prevent or restrict this activity are in process. Six municipal laws and three state laws have been sanctioned in the same sense. “It is essential that all those who work in the agricultural aviation industry become aware of the magnitude of these numbers and of the strong trend for these projects, of how much risk they pose to gradually limit aerial applications, warns José Araújo, Sindag’s parliamentary adviser and tech consultant (National Union of Agricultural Aviation Companies), an agency that has been seeking to unite the industry to reverse this situation.
Left to right: Gabriel Colle, Executive Director of Sindag, Porto Alegre - RS; José Araújo, Parliamentary Adviser of Sindag, Brasília – DF; Arthur Lorga, Vice President of Thrush, Anápolis - GO; Luiz Zaccarelli, Relationship of Lane-Aeroglobo /Air Tractor, Botucatu - SP; Júlio Kampf, President of Sindag, Cachoeira do Sul - RS; Adriano Castanho, Director of SNA, Sindicato Nacional dos Aeronautas, Brasília – DF; Marcelo Pacheco dos Guaranys, Deputy Chief of Analysis and Monitoring of Government Policies of the Ministry of Civil Household, Brasília – DF; Gianni Bozetto, SNA, Representative of Agricultural Aviation, Porto Alegre - RS; Miguel Ragone de Mattos – Project Manager Civil House, Brasília - DF; Silvia Fagnani, Executive Director of Sindiveg, São Paulo - SP

Araújo draws attention to the difficulty in identifying if there are bills prejudicial to the industry underway in each of the 27 states and in more than 5,000 Brazilian counties. “It is necessary to obtain the commitment and the eternal vigilance of the entrepreneurs and collaborators of the agricultural aero sector, in order to identify proposals in gestation, bills in process and debates on the subject, in their respective states and counties, so we all can organize the process of monitoring and counterargument, he points out.

Eduardo Araújo, Sindag’s technical consultant, brings to light the important bias of the issue: the lack of equality of treatment granted to aerial and terrestrial applications. “While this is practically exempt from any regulation and supervision, it is buried by laws and regulations and ideological and irrational patrol”, he says. “It is not surprising, therefore, to see, in a country with characteristics so propitious to aerial application, that it represents 20% or less of the area applied”. The theme has been addressed in meetings, forums and public hearings held throughout the country. The most recent of these took place on

August 24, in Brasília, when representatives from the industry were welcomed by Marcelo Pacheco Guaranys, deputy chief of Analysis and Monitoring of Government Policies of the Ministry of Civil Household. Participating in this meeting Julius Kampf, president of Sindag; Adriano Castanho, director of SNA (National Union of Aeronauts); Silvia Fagnani, executive director of Sindiveg (National Union of Products Industry for Plant Protection); and José Araújo, Sindag’s parliamentary adviser, among other members of entities related to the sector. Luiz Zaccarelli represented the Aeroglobo / Air Tractor and Arthur Lorga, Thrush Aircraft.

Representing Minister Eliseu Padilha, Guaranys was informed of the industry’s concern regarding state and municipal bills that intend to override federal legislation. He agreed to review all the data provided along with other ministries involved to guide trade unionists and businessmen about what actions could be taken. For Gabriel Colle, executive director of Sindag, who also attended the meeting in Brasília, this union of the functional and employers’ unions, as well as aircraft manufacturers and agrochemicals, is fundamental for the truth to be established in relation to aerial spraying. “This is an unprecedented joint action in our sector, so that the correct information on agricultural activities can overcome the misunderstanding that some parliamentarians are proposing”, he says. Zaccarelli, of Aeroglobo, says that aircraft manufacturers, suppliers, aviation entrepreneurs, pilots and other actors who depend directly or indirectly on the agricultural market must be 100% committed to the cause advocated by Sindag. “We need to support Sindag as we can, be it financially or with actions, because we all take our livelihoods from this sector and the consequences of prohibition or limitation of our activities will bring damages to all. The moment to act is now, so that we do not have to regret later”, he says. “Legislation in progress or already regulated should be concerned, rather, with a strict inspection of the pesticides used in spraying, because the agricultural activity already meets all the criteria imposed by the Ministries of Aeronautics and Agriculture”, argues Júlio Kampf, president of Sindag. “In fact, the application of defense by aircraft is infinitely more controlled than that done by land”.

By 2050, the planet’s population is expected to reach more than 9 billion people. To feed so many people, it will be necessary to double the World’s agricultural production. And there is no doubt that no other equipment is better prepared to protect the crop without compromising the environment than an agricultural airplane. Without this working tool, it will be impossible to raise the volume produced to the levels that are projected at this time.
