Accidents, weather, low volume and Cuba The season in North America is in full swing, while those south of the equator are taking a needed rest. I was told the Australian convention was well attended with lots of interests at the trade booths. Later this month, the New Zealanders will hold their conference. And, there are a couple of conventions in Brazil and Argentina in August. Unfortunately, there have recently been two fatal accidents, within two weeks of each other, both in Oklahoma and both involving towers. To make these tragedies worse, both accidents involved the Deterding families; the first was Andy Deterding and the second one a pilot for Andy’s brother, Jim Deterding, two different companies. These families have to be struggling to make some sense out of these losses; please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Another family with hard luck in the past eight months or so, has been the Mitchell family of M & M Air Service in Beaumont, Texas. Last fall, the flying service was hit hard by Hurricane Harvey, flooding hangars and ruining several Air Tractors and loading equipment. Last month, the now dry hangar took a direct hit from a suspected tornado that also damaged AT-802 Air Tractors and

destroyed the hangar. Thankfully, unlike the accidents in Oklahoma, no one was hurt; bad voodoo. In this July edition of AgAir Update you’ll read several articles that I know you will find interesting. Alan McCracken’s article about a new approach for drift control is bound to raise eyebrows. Many will disagree with Alan’s approach. However, Alan has a vast amount of experience calibrating very low volume applications for ag-aircraft in South America. Low volume applications do work and are much more profitable, if done correctly. Remember, the lower the application rate, the more accurate it has to be for both the swath width and spray pattern. Twice, twenty years and fifteen years ago, I traveled to Cuba as a guest of the state-run aerial application company, ENSA (Empresa Nacional de Servicios Aereos). The two trips were eye opening experiences. Regardless of the political aspects, the Cuban pilots had many similarities to ag-pilots anywhere else in the world. But, there were also many differences in the way they operated. In this edition of AgAir Update, you will read about Austin Kornegay making a similar trip last month.
Austin is a relatively new ag-pilot, but not to ag aviation. He flies for his dad, Pat Kornegay in San Benito, Texas. When he told me he was going to Cuba and his plans to visit ENSA, I asked for photos and an article and to be sure to look up my old friend, Santiago Delgado, Commercial Director of ENSA; if he was still around after all these years. Austin was successful on all accounts! In the photos, Santiago has not aged a bit; must be the delicious Cuban food and Bucanero beer! Until next month, Keep Turning...

I can say, from experience, that when it comes to deciding about buying an larger aircraft that you should make calculations based on “not treating every acre that walks in the door”. Nor would I bank on work that hasn’t materialized.
It’s like the undertaker said, “I hate to see you die, but I need the business.” I’m not wishing for fires, but at least the province will be ready and if called, will surely make the ag-aviation/firefighting industry look good!
Without knowing more, I’d suggest you make your decision based on the history of how much work was turned away, or how much less you want to fly.

Siding up with Nebraska operator by Bill Lavender
“Come on Bill, we’ll be blown out by lunch and will be waiting on you.” Mike Sides, of Sides Aerial Applications based in Bartley and Cambridge, Nebraska had just responded to my text to let him know we were on schedule and would be arriving mid-afternoon. Like many of the Plains states in June, the wind will kick up about midday and shutdown ag-flying services. Such was true this trip. I’ve known Mike for as long as I can remember. We met at a Nebraska convention years ago and at one time both were members of an elite “crop duster” fraternity. I had lost touch with him, though I knew he was still in business. He had kept up with me through his AgAir Update subscription. When I read a Nebraska newspaper story about him being in business for nearly 45 years and now working with his son, Joe, I contacted him about AgAir Update coming to visit. “Bill, we would be glad to have you,” was Mike’s response.

Mike started his flying career with his dad in a J3 Cub, soloing on his 16th birthday. However, shortly after graduation he joined the army and served a year in Germany. “I figured my damn draft number was so low that I may as well volunteer,” Mike said. Returning from serving in the army, Mike used the GI Bill to earn his pilot’s and A&P/IA licenses.
Armed with “licenses to learn”, Mike set up shop in southwest Nebraska flying out of Bartley, where continues to operate, nearly 50 years later. His first ag plane was a 100-horsepower Aeronca Champ with a 40-gallon backpack spray system. He flew 15,000 acres charging $1.25 an acre that first year and at the end of the season considered himself

rich enough to buy a new car. That was 1974. Two years later, he added a Pawnee to the “fleet”. Today, Sides Aerial Applications operates a 510GR Thrush with a TPE331-6 engine, 400-gallon Thrush also with a TPE331-6 engine and two TPE331-1 Pawnee Braves. “I like Garretts. I know some people think they are loud and they are; others like the PT6. But, Garretts have always worked for us and I understand how they work,” explains Mike. Additional to the four ag-aircraft, Mike operates a 120-foot boom John Deere 4830 ground machine. “I’ve operated the ground machine for about 15 years. We use it for sensitive area applications, especially with Engenia applications like we are making now on soybeans.” Mike jokingly says his pilots are all members of the geriatric pilot club. Sides Aviation employs four pilots, including himself. Aside from youngster pilot 52-year old Dave Haddon, Greg Hoak is 67, Art Blythe is 72 and Mike is 66. However, with age comes a wealth of experience and wisdom. Art has been with Mike since 1974 when Mike was the agricultural pilot instructor for Emory School of Aviation in Greeley, Colorado. Greg has flown fire fighting missions for over 30 years, mostly in Orion P3s. He also flew previously for Hershey Flying Service and participated in its Fat Cat program. He is an A&P/IA, as well. Dave flies through the corn run, then flies an AT-802 SEAT for the rest of the year. Mike’s son, Joe, bought out Mike’s competitor in nearby Cambridge, forming Sides Aviation in 1999. Joe graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Sciences. Although Sides Aerial Application and Sides Aviation are two separate businesses, they work together as one. Joe also soled on his 16th birthday, like Mike. He doesn’t actively fly ag, but instead keeps the four aircraft efficiently in the air. Greg flies the 400-gallon Thrush, Dave the 510GR Thrush, Art one of the turbine Braves and Mike fills in when needed with the other turbine Brave. Sides Aerial and Sides Aviation start the season in March with herbicide applications of Grazon and Tordon to control pesty thistle. The volatile applications are made at 1-2 GPA with CP straight stream nozzles until the end of May or first of June when these type applications become to risky for drift damage. After pasture work, fungicide applications are made on wheat at 2 GPA with CP flat fan nozzles.
The Bartley airstrip where Sides Aerial Application has been operating since 1974. Overall, pasture applications account for approximately 35% of Sides Aerial and Sides Aviation applications. It is rare that Sides Aerial and Sides Aviation will ferry more than 5560 miles from base. Most applications are flown from the Cambridge municipal airport and are within a 20-mile radius. Fields can be odd-shaped averaging about 40-50 acres. Sides Aerial Applications’ maintenance base is at the Bartley strip where some applications are flown from. At Bartley, there are multiple hangars, a drive-through covered loading pad and a concrete runway. From Champ to turbine is a long road over nearly a 50-year span of flying. Not long ago, the FAA notified Mike that he was inline for the Master Pilot award, signifying 50 years or more as a licensed pilot. “Even though I’ve cut back to couple hundred hours a year of ag-flying, I still enjoy every minute of it. And, I like pulling out the R22 to take a look around the area that I’ve known all my life,” Mike says while we finish off a Rocket Inn pizza in nearby Indianola, Nebraska.
Both Thrushes have the Century wing spar STC. Sides Aerial Application converted the 400-gallon Thrush’s spar. The 510GR came from Northstar Aviation in Ulysses, Kansas already converted. All four ag-aircraft operate Satloc GPS units and Ag-Nav flow controls. Sides started with an Ag-Nav prototype flow control that initially had a few minor bugs. But, once those were resolved, the units have been maintenance-free and spot-on accurate.
The corn fungicide run starts in July and lasts about four to six weeks into August. During this time, soybeans are also treated with a fungicide and insecticides as needed. The season finishes with a return to pasture applications for thistle that can last to the end of September and first of October. Ideally, fall applications for thistle provide the best results.

After a long process of discovery by all parties the transition has moved forward. The agreement fulfills the goals of all parties involved, remarked Chip Kemper. “Dave and I have had a long and productive relationship for many years. I think it’s going to be terrific for Air Tractor and the Canadian aerial application industry. There will be a service center and large parts stock in Canada, operated by a dealer that is a Canadian.
I believe it will be fantastic for Portage Aircraft Specialties and all the Air Tractor customers in Canada. I wish Dave and their staff every success.” Dave Frisch is a long-time Air Tractor aircraft owner. He grew up on a mixed grain and livestock farm in the Manitou area and began his ag flying career in 1999. Frisch serves on the Canadian Aerial Applicators Association Board, and is currently the Manitoba Aerial Applicators Association President. He owns and manages an aerial application business as well as Portage Aircraft Maintenance, which opened its doors in 2004 to answer the need for a maintenance facility specializing in the growing numbers of turbine Air Tractor aircraft entering Canada. “We are proud and delighted to represent Air Tractor agricultural aircraft in Canada. Air Tractor produces a great airplane,” Frisch said. “I have flown them for many years. Our maintenance facility has kept Air Tractor customers flying for thousands of trouble-free hours.” Portage Aircraft Specialties has an 8,400 square foot, climatecontrolled, state-of-the-art maintenance facility in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. “We provide a comprehensive range of maintenance and repair services. Spray drift time for a new approach by Alan McCracken
The subject of off-target deposition otherwise referred to as drift, has been a challenge to farmers and aerial applicators for many years. The first use of aircraft in agriculture was for seeding in New Zealand in 1906 and the first recorded use for dusting back in the early 1920s using a Curtiss Jenny JN-6H to apply insecticidal dusts, hence the use of the name “crop dusting”. Shortly afterwards, someone had the bright idea to mix products with water and apply as a slurry using a spray boom and nozzles almost identical in principle as to what we are using today nearly 100 years later. It is my opinion this was a serious mistake in selecting water as a vehicle to deliver agrochemicals to crops. The reason being that although water is readily available in most crop spraying areas and is cheap, it is the worst possible carrier that exists. Very often the water is hard due to high levels of calcium and may also have an issue with its pH level. In addition, it can be contaminated with organic matter, all which can reduce the efficacy of chemicals. My experience around the world in many extreme environments has taught me that there is a solution to this drift issue. We need to re-examine the root causes of drift, the presence of extremely small droplets. This article will attempt to deal with the main issues. Considerable research has been conducted around the world on how to solve the challenges of spray drift. However, from a practical consideration we are simply repeating the same mistake over and over again instead of tackling the root of the problem. This activity can be compared to the definition of an idiot, once given by Albert Einsten. He defined, “As someone who repeats the same mistake over and over expecting a different result.” Let’s begin with basics; what causes drift problems? Almost everyone, including many product labels, state that wind can cause drift. In addition, many specify not to spray if wind speed is above

5 MPH and very few specify a maximum speed. Most experienced pilots know that a “no-wind” condition is normally much more dangerous than a wind speed of 15 MPH. When there is no wind there can be a high risk of temperature inversion, or upward thermals, that can carry spray droplets off target. An experienced pilot knows that flying too low can provoke excessive wingtip vortices that can increase spray drift. Spray droplets are thrown upwards to be subjected to evaporation and increased drift. Equally so, when an aircraft flies too high the medium sized droplets quickly become super-fine droplets due to evaporation losses. There is a lot of information published about droplet sizes from various nozzles. Before selecting nozzle sizes, or thinking about droplet size, we need to consider a basic objective with respect to efficacy and drift. If we want absolute control of drift, we have poor coverage and no efficacy. So, we always have a trade off between droplet sizes. The droplet size will change under conditions of severe evaporation loss regardless of the nozzle type. All this data becomes irrelevant when we consider mixtures of several chemicals. There is a myth that it is necessary to increase spray volume for fungicides to obtain better coverage. This goes against simple mechanics. Higher volumes mean bigger orifices that result in bigger droplets and inferior coverage. The reality is the opposite. To obtain improved coverage, it is necessary to reduce the droplet size that enables the use of smaller droplets to obtain better crop penetration. For rotary atomizers, when spray volume is increased they can become flooded such that droplets lose their uniformity and can produce more “fines”. For several years, my clients have been applying mixtures of products under conditions of high temperature (45°C/113°F) and low relative humidity (17%) with excellent results using low spray volumes of 3-8 liters/hectare (0.3-0.8 GPA). By doing so, we have discovered the solution to drift control which is so simple and obvious that most

technical people don’t recognize it. When several products are applied together, the mixture in many cases contains 15-40% chemical resulting in a density higher than water and much less volatile than water; so much so that spray droplets do not evaporate for 5-20 minutes, dependent on the mixture.
it is recommended to install as few nozzles as possible.
Selection of suitable nozzles, or atomizers, to produce the minimum number of extremely small droplets is important. Smaller droplets are much more prone to be carried off target by wind. Faulty check valves that leak during ferry flights and turning is probably one of the most common causes of spray drift. Another major cause of drift is faulty adjustment of the “by-pass” valve that needs to be set to give adequate suck back creating negative pressure in the boom. Each nozzle or atomizer always produces some “fines”, so for minimum drift
The pilot needs to practice safe operations by only turning on the spray when in level flight over the target field and to shut-off the spray before climbing to conduct a turn. When possible, spraying should be made using a carrousel pattern to ensure the propeller turbulence always provides a uniform swath overlap. This is especially so when operating a heavy turbine aircraft. Recently, several new adjuvants have been developed that should enter the market during 2018 that offer advantages with respect to the control of evaporation and the density of spray droplets. However, these products can only be of benefit if the applicator first follows all the basic steps cited earlier in reducing the risk of drift.

The three columns demonstrate the effect of adding water to the mix’s density. Ten liters/hectare = one gallon per acre., etc. One of the best examples of chemical physical characteristics is glyphosate with a density of 1.24 and has a viscosity higher than water making it ideally suited to low volume application. One of the new dicamba formulations also has a high density. If both products are to be mixed together, the optimum application would be to apply using the lowest possible spray volume to preserve the droplet density and reduce evaporation losses. Unfortunately, current recommendations are to use extremely high volumes of 100 l/h (10 GPA) using only ground application. Another option to reduce or eliminate “fines” would be to suspend solid particles (above 125 microns) of an inert product such as a polymer that adheres to the herbicide to ensure that no droplet is smaller than this size. Albert Einsten was correct with his definition of insanity. We need to move away from old concepts and accept that a round wheel is best and stop trying to invent a square wheel just because it might look nice.

Food After I landed, I rolled up to the loader truck and spun the airplane around, watching the wing tip clearance as I did so. I set the brakes, flipped on the hopper light and leaned back to watch the milky substance gurgle into the airplane. A thought occurred to me, “I’m hungry.” A load of smelly pesticide isn’t something that generally elicits that sort of response. It had been a long night with a long way to go. I was sure missing that peanut butter and jelly sandwich I left on the counter at home. I usually carry a few energy bars in my little blue lunch box. There’s nothing like a compressed sawdust patty and raisins to slake the old hungry feeling. I think they were raisins anyway...
My dutiful wife is very good at keeping me fed. Being a skinny guy, she worries that I might blow away. I’ve discovered that the term ‘comfort food’ is anything made by the hands of the woman that loves you. It just makes it that much better. A good old PBJ and a ziplock bag full of apple slices are what gets me through most of my work nights. They don’t do a lot of good when they don’t find their way to the airport with me though. I think a lot of us don’t eat very well during the busy season and maybe too well in the off season. We eat what we can, when we can and go from there. I know there are some
operations who make it part of their standard operating procedures to have a lunch ready and available. Grills in the hangar, or a buffet filled with chow, are always a good thing. It’s having the discipline to stop and eat that is usually the problem. We want to get things done. The clock is ticking. The bugs are eating. The weeds are growing. The kid’s got a ball game I can get to as long as I can get all this work done beforehand. We’ve run reams of paper through the presses filled with all sorts of statistics regarding nutrition and the need to hydrate ourselves. What color is your urine today? All that information is fine and dandy when you’re having your classes and meetings. They make

great powerpoint productions and fill an hour for your CEUs. The fact is, it all goes out the dump gate when we get into the saddle and start rolling. I’m generalizing here by the way, so for all you guys who make sure your calorie intake is at the daily, doctor recommended level, good for you. I certainly can’t claim that myself. I can’t count how many times I’ve blasted down the runway with half a sandwich clenched in my teeth. Rotate out, adjust the flaps, set the prop, power and chomp down the rest of it on the way to the field. It’s a disappointing thing when your half a sandwich breaks away and drops to the floor during your take off roll. It usually falls to a hard to get to place, especially while flying and alters the taste drastically. One more reason to have smooth runways. At Lakeland, we take a mandatory thirtyminute break. It’s a law in California now. The ground crew shuts down and sits in the truck staring at their phones for a half an hour while we finish the loads we’re on. By the time we get back, their break is almost over and we get back to work. I’ve learned to take advantage of the extra down time to wolf down some food and gulp a bunch of water. If there’s time, I’ll
hop out, clean my lights and windshield and be ready to go. I’m not a nutritionist or anyone who knows anything about food besides what tastes good and what doesn’t. However, I’ve learned to try and balance a few things. When you get past fifty, you start to pay closer attention to what your body’s telling you. You can’t help it by this time, because the old bag of bones that’s been carrying you around starts to speak louder. Sometimes, very loud. I’ve always been a sugar addict. I put sugar in everything and anything. Or, I used to anyhow. I’ve found, through the advice my doctor at the V.A. that sugar exacerbates arthritis worse than throwing hay bales (Well, damn.). I’ve no doubt that a majority of us tough and stalwart ag pilots have experienced the grating caress of arthritis to one degree or another. Of course, most of us have outgrown their sugary phase. I’ve always been a bit delayed. Caffeine is the next thing and isn’t much better than sugar. I discovered through accidentally reading an ingredients label, a lot of the snacks, drinks and energy bars contain a bunch of caffeine. It picks you up quick, but
let’s you down hard. I burn through caffeine quicker than Jet-A. So, where’s that leave a poor old guy like me trying to struggle through another season and stay on top of the game? No place good. Fortunately, the good Lord provided us with an abundance of yummy stuff we can take along that doesn’t have a cellophane wrapper. There is also quite a few things out there on the market that a guy can pack along that doesn’t taste like compressed sawdust. The trick is to go ahead and put on your glasses and read the contents. And be prepared to pay more. That’s okay though. You’re a wealthy crop duster pilot and you can afford it. Nothin‘ but the best for you! Summer is upon us. We’ve already received plenty of bad news. Keep your head and eyes out of the cockpit. Keep your energy levels up. Kiss your wife and don’t miss an opportunity to give thanks and say a prayer. Fly well and stay safe! GE successfully tested its advanced turboprop engine with 3D-printed parts by Tomas Kellner
Stephen Erickson was just 13 years old when he fell in love with planes — inside a Boston movie theater. He was watching aircraft mechanic Joe Patroni, played by George Kennedy in the original “Airport” movie, extricate a Boeing jet full of worried passengers from a snowdrift. “That moment was the spark that changed my life,” he says. “I wanted to build aircraft engines.” He enrolled in a technical school and joined GE Aviation, where he has become an ace test engineer — a real-world Patroni. Now 59, Erickson normally works at a GE Aviation plant in Lynn, Massachusetts. But in September, he moved to Prague on a special assignment: getting GE’s first 3D-printed
commercial aircraft engine ready for its inaugural test, and then firing it up for the very first time. Last week, Erickson was in his element, attaching the final sensors to the engine, called Advanced Turboprop, or ATP. He worked methodically inside a bunker-like test cell located on the snowy outskirts of the Czech capital. “There is no engine like it in the world,” Erickson said. The engine passed the first test just before Christmas. “This is a pivotal moment,” says Paul Corkery, general manager of the Advanced Turboprop program. “We now have a working engine. We are moving from design and development to the next phase of the program, ending with certification.”

Some 400 GE designers, engineers and materials experts in the Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, Poland, the U.S. and elsewhere spent the last two years developing the engine. More than a third of the ATP is 3D-printed from advanced alloys.
For example, the designers included components in the engine’s compressor that were originally developed for supersonic engines. These parts, called variable vanes, will allow it to fly efficiently even in thin air at high altitudes. They also developed a new digital way to control the turboprop engine that will enable pilots to fly it like a jet, with just a single lever instead of three. How easy is it to fly with the new controls? “I would use the phrase ‘revolutionary simplicity,’” says Brad Thress, senior vice president of engineering at aircraft maker Textron Aviation. Textron’s new Cessna Denali will be the first plane to use the engine. During his three decades at GE Aviation, Erickson has been involved in testing the company’s workhorse engines, including the T700 engine for Black Hawk helicopters and the T408 engine for the Super Stallion and King Stallion, America’s most powerful helicopter. But he says that in his career he hasn’t seen “anything like the ATP.” Erickson’s long and tall test cell in Prague is one of several attached to GE Aviation’s factory here. Employees at the plant assemble and service GE turboprop engines for commuter, agricultural and even acrobatic planes flying on six continents, like the L-410 and the Thrush crop duster. Workers at the plant spent the fall assembling the first ATP engine in a special room next to the test cell. In early December, the team

The servers already hold information GE gathered from testing individual components of the engine over the last year. For example, the ATP team tested the compressor with the variable vanes at a special custom-built rig located at the Technical University of Munich. “We can push it to stalling point and test the entire operating range,” Rudolf Selmeier, one of the GE engineers involved in running the tests, said.

By then the group included engineers from the Italian aviation company Avio Aero, which is already printing parts for jet engines. GE acquired Avio Aero in 2013. Inside the cell, the team connected the ATP to a boxy water brake, which simulates the torque cause by the propeller, and connected the engine to tubes supplying air, fuel and oil and removing exhaust.
GE plans to build a total of 12 ATP test vehicles and test them in various specialized test cells across Europe and Canada. The company will perform a battery of tests over the next two years, before the engine can be certified by government authorities for passenger flight. The tests include performance and high-vibration testing. GE will also test the engine at an altitude later this year. By last Friday morning, everything was ready for the first engine’s big moment. The team secured the test cell’s thick steel-and-concrete doors and decamped into a control room upstairs. They watched the engine spin to life on a bank on large screens, starting a new chapter in aviation history.

A few weeks ago, a strong thunderstorm formed in western Louisiana moved and approached Texas from the northeast slamming directly into the operation of TAAA member, Andy Mitchell of M&M Air Services. Reported winds where over 60 knots. It is still to be determined if the wind was straight line or tornadic that hit the M&M Air Services hangar. Winds broke one of Mitchell’s AT-802s from tie down and moved it over 100 yards across the M&M’s airport. It damaged two of M&M’s other AT-802s positioned in the hangar; one with substantial damage. The hangar is a complete loss. Andy Mitchell reported to TAAA that M&M has repaired one of the damaged AT-802s and working on the second one. The third aircraft will have to be disassembled and taken to a factory repair center for repairs. This is the second time in less than a year that M&M has been hit hard by weather. The first time was in September when Hurricane Harvey flooded the facility in Beaumont, Texas and now this. Andy says, “We got some bad voodoo on us in the past year.” —

Ever since I was a kid I always heard my dad, Pat Kornegay, talking about this island in the Caribbean Sea, Cuba. Earlier this year I decided to check it out for myself and at first I thought it was going to be a hassle getting in. Not an issue at all. All I did was buy an airline ticket and a visa at the United Airlines gate right before I boarded my airline in Houston and I was set. My week-long adventure in April this year in Cuba included four major cities: Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Viñales, Havana and lots of countryside. The first day that I arrived in Havana, I made a beeline to Trinidad and that was definitely an interesting drive. To get there I took the Autopista Nacional (the main corridor

I hopped on a Viazul bus after a day and a half in Trinidad and headed out to Cienfuegos which was about an hour and half drive to the west. Cienfuegos, “The Pearl of the South” was a great place to visit and I wish I could have stayed there longer. There were so many old European style buildings, museums and churches to check out. The salsa dancing during the evening was incredible.

My next destination was Viñales. To get there I decided to take a collective taxi; an interesting way to travel. These taxis get a group of people together, usually tourists and sometimes Cubans, and they all pitch in for the total fare. It is more of the economical option when compared to private taxis. It took me about two minutes to find one and fifteen minutes to haggle the fare down to a more reasonable cost, about $30 USD to take me and four additional passengers across Cuba. On the drive we passed through Artemisa, which is an agricultural area and I was taken by the shear amount of sugar cane; just rolling hills filled with cane with no turn rows or breaks. Viñales is a quaint rural town. You could walk all the way through it in about fifteen minutes. The sight to see here is tobacco farms and valleys. The nightlife there was amazing with lots of restaurants/bars with live salsa music and ice cold beer

Rodolfo shared with me a normal day of agricultural flying in Cuba, but first let us go through the training and recurrency regimens that are required of ag-pilots. Every beginning pilot must to go through one year of theory before setting foot in an airplane. This covers aerodynamics, navigation, regulations, operational procedures, the dispersal system, mechanical systems, and regulations in a classroom setting. Upon a satisfactory completion of the theory portion, they start flight training. Flight training lasts approximately a year and it is all done in the Antonov An-2. Once the students get past that point, they become copilots for their agricultural training segment. They sit right seat for about 300 hours only doing dry work. Subsequently, they are promoted to captain. Once proficient at dispersing dry material they can go over to liquid work. In the province of Sancti Spiritus, ENSA has a dozen PZL M-18 Dromaders. Only experienced An-2 captains qualify for the PZL M-18. Due to dry conditions in certain parts of the country, Cuban agricultural pilots are called upon to fight fires. In order to qualify for firework, pilots must attend a special aerial firefighting school. Over 90% of Cuban airline pilots were once ag-pilots. Cuban agricultural pilots work in twenty-day rotations. Within these rotations, they work six days on and one off to avoid fatigue. After each rotation, there is a mandatory ten-day rest period. During a rotation, the pilot can fly no more than fifty-five hours, but can fly up to seventy hours after a medical examination. Recurrency training consists of a week full of lectures and spending time going through routine and emergency procedures on a desktop simulator with an instructor. Medical-wise, there is a very stringent annual examination for all ENSA pilots. This examination can limit your flying time limits if there is an issue. There is a mandatory retirement age of 60, but if the pilot wants to keep flying he can continue to 65, if he can pass a

medical. On a side note, the safety record they have is excellent with only two incidents within the past two years and no fatalities.
Similar to some of us, these pilots must leave home for periods of time to accomplish their work. They usually relocate to the towns near the main bases in Pinar De Rio or Camaguey. They get up before the break of dawn, head over to the base,have breakfast and get their blood pressure checked. This decides whether or not they fly. Once cleared by the medical officer, the pilot goes to the dispatch office to receive his work and crew information for the day. Actually, the Cubans have a couple of women ag-pilots! The crew consists of pilot,

When he completed his military service, there was a need for ag pilots so he began his career in agricultural aviation. As with all Cuban agricultural pilots, he trained exclusively in the An-2.

copilot (who is receiving instruction) and a technician who runs the dispersal equipment and can address any small mechanical issues that might come up. Upon arrival, the airplane should be fueled and ready to go, but always a thorough preflight is carried out to ensure safety by either the copilot or the captain. Time to fly! After warming the engine, the pilot, co-
pilot and technician head out to the farm airstrips. These strips are located near the fields to be sprayed. At these airstrips, pilots usually service two or three farms during a day’s work. At theses airstrips there is a director of operations that divides the work, manages the flaggers and coordinates with ENSA. Some but not all ENSA aircraft are equipped with Ag-Nav GPS units. Hourwise, Cuban pilots are limited to six hours
a day and up to seven if they have a copilot. After the flying is completed, the captain fills out a “Reporte de Servicio” (Service Report) with completed work, hours flown, ambient temperatures, which fields were done and what was applied. Once they return to base, a mechanic will address any squawks and ready the airplane for the next day. During this rotation, the crew remains together along with the same airplane.

The same aircraft can be used for dry or liquid work, but the change over has to be done at the main base of operation.
