agair mail footsteps My name is Patrick Humphrey, I’m an aspiring ag-pilot in training. I have recently decided to enter into agricultural application thanks to the mentoring of my dad, Terry Humphrey of Thrush Aircraft. I’ve been at the school for a month now and I’ve come into contact with several students (many are sons of ag pilots) who are confident in their positions after school and their futures. I grew up in the factory at Ayres Corporation and Thrush Aircraft. After the experience of watching the building of these aircraft, I felt I knew the ins and outs of ag flying. Thankfully, Terry put me in my place and made sure I knew this would be no easy profession. He made sure I understood that I would have to earn my seat in the industry and that I will have to work twice as hard not having an agricultural background. I would like to write an article to the young aspiring pilots entering the industry today. Granted, there are many who will have inherited jobs from their dads. There are still many who have dads in the industry that will have to work extremely hard to earn their seats. After many “talking to’s” by Terry Humphrey, I feel the realization doesn’t hit many young aspiring ag pilots until the day they finish their training. I believe the article would be insightful to many and maybe give a different angle for new pilots.
Hello Patrick; It is good to hear from you and congratulations on choosing to follow in your dad’s footsteps to be an ag-pilot! If there is only one thing that I can tell you, that is to listen closely to any advice your dad gives you. He has been at this ag-aviation game for decades, flown all type of ag-aircraft under a variety of conditions. Consider him a wealth of information well worth mining. As for writing an article, please do. We will be glad to take a look at it. It is always interesting to get a different perspective on this industry of ours. —Bill

by Bill Lavender It is the end of the year; the first year of ag flying for some, the end of a career for others that are retiring and the end of a year for those with many decades of flying ag. Each sees the ending in their own way. For most, the season has been a relatively “normal” season, not too busy and not too slow. However, after several extremely good years, the definition of a normal season changes and becomes a slow season. The one thing that can be assured in ag-aviation, neither exceptional, normal or slow seasons last forever. How you weather them often depends on what you have learned and how you apply that education. Looking back over the past eleven months of 2014, many things took place in ag-aviation. AgAir Update made every attempt to bring those events to its readers. In the January edition, AgAir Update ventured outside the U.S. border to visit a very progressive operation in Costa Rica. El Colono Agropecurio operates 19 agaircraft spraying mostly bananas. The company launched its agplane operation, a division of a large farming supply company, in 2007. The aircraft division is managed by the company’s founder’s son, 30-year old Cristian Castillo. Since that article, El Colono Agropecurio has bought several more new AT-502s from Lane Aviation and continues to expand. One of the mainstays in agaviation’s aircraft fleet is the AgCat. Although production stopped several years ago, Hershey Flying Service took over that responsibility building Ag-Cats from the ground up. The February edition featured how Jared Storm in 2011 bought the longtime, well-known Hershey Flying Service from the Roueche brothers, now both deceased.

With Jared’s love of the Ag-Cat, he has improved on the services offered by Hershey Flying Service and continues the tradition of supporting the worldwide fleet of Ag-Cats. The March edition focused on aerial firefighting, an ever growing part of the ag-aviation industry. With a visit to Kinston, North Carolina, AgAir Update met with the North Carolina Forestry Service (NCFS), the oldest, continuous operating Single Engine Air Tanker facility in the United States. The NCFS operates a fleet of 23 aircraft with 26 full-time employees of which 17 are pilots. Three piston-powered Dromaders, a piston-powered S2R Thrush and five helicopters provide the equipment to deliver fire suppression from the air.
Some may argue the validity of specialized training for agaviation. However, that argument does not hold water and many operators are meeting the demand to replace an aging agpilot population. Some are finding the best way to train the new ag-pilot is with the side-byside seating of Air Tractor’s AT504. The aircraft serves equally in a dual role as a spray plane equivalent to the AT-502B, while also providing an excellent training platform for ag-flying. The April edition of AgAir Update features this versatile ag-plane. Without a doubt, breaking into the ag-aviation business takes determination at a very high level. That kind of determination is exactly what motocross racer Heath Voss had when he decided to retire from being a champion motorcycle racer to become a helicopter ag-pilot operator. A visit by AgAir Update for the May edition revealed Heath’s attention to detail that
included an immaculate maintenance shop and high-end support equipment. Remarkably, Heath reached this level of professionalism in ag-aviation in about three years.
The summer June edition of AgAir Update featured the Thrush H80 Switchback aircraft. It is the 510-gallon, GE H80 powered Thrush with a modified fire gate for SEAT operations. The uniqueness of the setup is the ability of the operator to switch back and forth between firefighting operations and dry or liquid applications in a very short period of time. The article is written by AgAir Update’s AirFire & Forestry Chief Editor, Marc Mullis. Marc gives a handson evaluation of the versatility of the Switchback. Marc is an active SEAT pilot with decades of experience. The July edition of AgAir Update features the return of the legendary Pawnee PA-25-235. Although, today the aircraft is no longer built by Piper Aircraft; instead by an Argentine company, Laviasa. The new version is now called the PA-25 p3 with a 260 hp engine and constant speed propeller. I made a couple of evaluation flights that included loading the 180-gallon hopper to the 150-gallon mark with nearly full fuel. The aircraft handled with ease. There will be conditions when the PA-25 p3 pilot will be able to fill the hopper and fly comfortably with it. The Arkansas Razorbacks are a favorite college team for Arkansas operators. Some paint their aircraft in Razorback colors (red) and others name their company after the team, as did Brent Carpenter with his Hog Air Aviation operation near Jonesboro. Beginning with an AT-502, today Hog Air Aviation operates six AT-802s and two OH58 helicopters. The August
edition of AgAir Update makes for interesting reading on how this Razorback fan grew his company in northeastern Arkansas. On of the more impressive agplanes, from its sheer size and its productivity, is the AT-802 Fire Boss. Not unlike the Fire Boss, its manufacturer, Wipaire, Inc., is just as impressive. Based in South Saint Paul, Minnesota. this third generation company of Wiplingers (Ben, Bob and Chuck) builds 50-70 floats a year for aircraft of all sorts with the Fire Boss Wipline 10000 as its largest set. The September edition of AgAir Update features Wipaire, Inc. with a visit to the factory; a truly remarkable company. Ag-pilots tend to be loyal to their brand of aircraft. It can be no more true than does the October edition of AgAir Update point out when it featured multi-generation operations running Air Tractors. From California to Texas to Florida, these three companies featured in the article have similarities found in many agoperations around the world.
The November edition of AgAir Update features a flying service based on the prairies of North Dakota. Rubbert Aerial once operated exclusively Pawnees, until it realized it could no longer meet the demands of its farmer customers. Transitioning from three Pawnees, to two turbine Air Tractors all in one year, makes for interesting reading. The company even kept the Pawnees to compliment the productivity of the Air Tractors. With this December edition of AgAir Update, another year approaches its end. For most, the season north of the equator was good. Operators south of the equator are just now starting a promising season. These are profitable and challenging times for aerial applicators. No one knows what 2015 will bring forth. Without a doubt, AgAir Update will continue to keep its readers worldwide informed.

Preparing for next season When the National Interagency Fire Council moves their Situation Report from a daily report to a weekly, it is my signal that the fire season has ended. For the 2014 season, this occurred in early October. Historically, this was one of the least active seasons in decades for the United States. The national ten-year average for number of “large” fires and acres burned is 65,023 and 7,037,332 respectively. For 2014, the figures are 43,151 and 3,262,635. It has been suggested that a more aggressive initial attack policy has resulted in the statistics, but I believe that the numbers are attributable to Mother Nature. To press my point, during the El Niño weather pattern of 2011 more than four million acres burned in my home state of Texas. Since then the weather patterns have allowed less than onehundred thousand acres to burn in the Lone Star state. During this period, timely precipitation has produced a tremendous fuel load that is ready to burn when conditions return. The Fire Boss seems to have found its niche in the firefighter’s toolbox. Incident commanders have discovered that the versatile aircraft can be used in much the same way as a type one
helicopter at a fraction of the cost when suitable scooping water is nearby. I flew several fires with Fire Bosses this season and saw firsthand what they can do and I was impressed. John Schwenk ,owner of Aero Spray Inc. out of Appleton, Minnesota is currently the only operator of Fire Bosses in the United States. He currently operates four of them. One of John’s aircraft delivered eighty loads of water on a fire this summer in one eight-hour flight time cycle. I think the future holds great promise for the Fire Boss. More than sixty have been sold worldwide. I see a lot more coming in the future. It is getting harder and harder for aircrews to find decent and affordable housing when on contract. The lead time on a move is usually measured in minutes and our abilities to make a decent choice in housing is often very limited. I have spent many nights at airports waiting on a ride after a long day. Usually a call to dispatch will solve the problem, but when it doesn’t happen it can lead to a long night which leads to a much longer day. I think that it should be automatic when a last minute move is made for dispatch to make housing and transportation arrangements.
Winter and early spring are the time when crews attend recurrent training sessions. I will soon be traveling to Sacramento to participate in simulator training. This is an excellent program and only gets better with each passing year. It brings together air crews from the entire gamut of fire aviation, so we can train just as we work. I am really looking forward to participating. I hope everyone had a safe and prosperous season. Be sure and bring something to your training sessions and I hope to see you in the mountains one day.

A summer in the life of a SEAT pilot by Marc Mullis Many people cannot comprehend the lifestyle that an aerial firefighting pilot leads during the heat of a busy fire season. Living out of a bag, often in a different town and hotel night after night, waking up every morning not knowing where you will wind up come sunset. Descriptive words such as “gypsy” and “unstable” are often heard when we try to describe what we do. A new five-year exclusive use Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT) contract went into effect in 2014. The contracts were awarded to thirty-three aircraft which were strategically placed in fire prone areas across the Western United States. The new contracts differed from previous ones in that each aircraft would be assigned to a starting point and then be moved throughout the season to wherever the need may be. Under previous contracts, an aircraft was assigned a home base and would remain there through the fire season. The start date for my 100-day contract for this year was June 5. In early May I received word that my starting point was to be Grand Junction, Colorado. SEATs are often assigned in pairs and going along with me and Tanker-809 was be fellow M&M
Air Service pilot Bill Rose in Tanker-866. Neither Bill nor I had ever flown out of Grand Junction (GJT) and we were both excited about going to Colorado. About a week before the start date, all company pilots converged on our fire headquarters in Fort Stockton, Texas for in-house training and to familiarize ourselves with the new Hydro-Max Fire Gates which had been installed during the off-season. With our flight plans prepared and hotel reservations made, we were ready to travel on June 3. The other two company ships were starting in Canyon City, Colorado. The GJT tanker base is considered full service; meaning it can load Heavy Air Tankers as well as SEATs. It has its own retardant plant with a contracted loading crew. The Middle Colorado River Dispatch Center is adjacent to the tanker base which makes for a seamless operation. Bill and I, along with our service truck drivers, settled into the pilots’ lounge awaiting our first fire call. The first few weeks at GJT were very slow. Besides a couple of heads up, there was very little fire activity. The handful of new starts were quickly contained by ground crews and did not

require any aerial support. We passed the time cooking, watching TV and playing games on our tablets. Under the contract if a pilot has not flown in a 14-day period, a mission currency flight must be made. This consists of a simulated mission that is made as realistic as possible utilizing all available resources. Because of previously busy fire seasons, I had not flown one in over ten years and this would be the first of three during this very slow fire season.

In late June, we started receiving dispatches to small fires that usually required only a load or two of retardant per aircraft. Monsoonal moisture brought with it lightning which was responsible for the activity. In early July, the decision was made to move Bill and T-866 up the road to Rifle, Colorado where a portable SEAT base had been set up. This spread us out for a faster initial attack response, but we were close enough to work the same fires. Not long after the move, a dispatch came in for a fire about seventy miles to the northwest near Vernal, Utah. Structures were threatened and evacuations were ordered. Bill and I were the closest resources and were the initial attack aircraft (IA). By the time we dropped our loads an Air Attack, Lead Plane and three Heavy Air Tankers had been ordered. The rest of the day was spent “load and return� out of GJT. The so-farquiet base had catapulted into a hub of activity. As nightfall neared we began to get a handle on the flames and all aircraft were ordered to overnight in GJT. The ramp soon became very

crowded and crews filed in to be fed and transported to nearby hotels. The following morning saw the briefing room packed with crews from two BAe-146s, one P2-V, and three SEATs. The fire was under control but all aircraft were still assigned in case a breakout occurred. The pilot lounge was no longer the empty retreat it had once been as everyone vied for their own personal space. As the days passed, the other two SEATs were sent back to their respective bases and one by one the heavies were dispatched to fires far away. By now, the monsoons had brought precipitation as well as lightning. Colorado was getting wet and the fire danger started to spiral downward.

The next dispatch was to a fire 140 miles to the north near Rawlings, Wyoming. The reload base was at Casper. Once again, Bill and I were the closest assets and would be IA. The fire was burning in very steep terrain which made it extremely difficult to get ground crews and equipment into it. It became an aerial operation. Once again heavies, additional SEATs and helicopters were ordered and the rest of the day was spent load and return. Pumpkin time found Bill and me in Casper, where we learned that a reload base was being set up in Rawlings and it would be our new base. The following afternoon we made the move to Rawlings and our drivers in their support rigs were waiting on us. It is a sleepy little town in the southwest part of the state. The airport is over 6,800 feet MSL and has a 7,000-foot runway. Hot July afternoons caused density altitude to soar to well over 10,000-feet. Wyoming is huge and our two AT-802s were the only fixedwing assets in the entire state. Long distance dispatches soon become the norm. One such mission had us dropping on a fire at 11,000 MSL in the Bighorn Mountains between snow patches
Fire activity picked up as dry thunderstorms became more common with the monsoonal moisture moving farther north. We were moved back to Casper. One afternoon we were sent to a fire near the Montana border. Our reload base was Rapid City, South Dakota. It was mid-afternoon when we launched, so I knew we would not make it back to Rawlings. I dropped my first load and headed to Rapid City for fuel and more retardant. After dropping my second load, Great Plains Dispatch contacted me and relayed that I was being diverted to Newcastle, Wyoming where a reload base was being set up. I inquired about jet fuel availability because it was now getting very late on a weekend and it is a very small airport. I was assured that fuel was available. When I stopped in the pit, a nervous young man jumped on the wing and told me that he had never loaded an airplane before. Red flags immediately went up. When I inquired about fuel he said the fuel guy would be there in about an hour. In an hour it would be dark, so I headed to the fire with minimal fuel. After the drop, which turned out to be straight water with no retardant, I headed for Gillette where I landed twenty minutes after sundown with the low fuel warning light screaming bright red. As the monsoonal moisture slowly soaked Wyoming, we came into work one morning to get word we were being moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. We made a dash to the hotel to check out and gather our things and rushed back to the airport for some flight planning. Coeur d’Alene is in the northern panhandle of the state about one hundred miles from the Canadian border. I had been there many times before and it is some of the most beautiful country that I have ever seen. The flight up took us across the middle of Yellowstone and required a fuel stop at Bozeman, Montana. The scenery along the way was nothing short of breathtaking.
At Coeur d’Alene, we joined up with another SEAT, a Fire Boss, and an Avro RJ-85 Next Generation Heavy Air Tanker. Fire activity was slow but with a great bunch of people at the full service tanker base the days clicked by fast. Soon the shorter days and cooler nights of September arrived and we began making preparations to head home when our contract ended on September 15. Bill headed to Arizona, while I returned to West Texas. The fire season was over and it was time to return to a normal life.

P&WC leading in biodiesel R&D and testing Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) established its leadership in the use of alternative fuel sources back in the 1970s when diesel fuel and aviation gasoline (limited usage) was approved for the company’s PT6A engines. Today, P&WC is deeply involved in exploring the use of biofuels that could ultimately change the face of aviation around the world. The varying nature of biodiesel composition most certainly calls for a careful examination of the implications and we are committed to doing just that.” P&WC opted for a multi-pronged approach. Some biodiesel tests will be conducted at the company’s state of the art facility located on the campus of the Canadian National Research Council in Ottawa, Ontario. Others have been conducted under P&WC’s funding and direction at Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario. The company has also leveraged the significant knowledge of biofuels at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, combined with its own experts at Pratt & Whitney. “In addition to testing in laboratory settings, we are also launching a Controlled Service Use (CSU) program
in Brazil to evaluate the in-service impact of biodiesel on engine components,” says Parisien. “We have enlisted the support of aerial applicators flying PT6A engines that will fly their season using biodiesel for an actual, in-field analysis. The results from all our other test activity have been used to determine inspection parameters for the CSU.” There is little doubt that the future of aviation lies in some combination of biofuels and more traditional fuel sources. “There is still much research and testing to be conducted; but we’ll get there,” says Parisien. “Our commitment to our operators is as it has always been: to forge progress guided by

Women in ag aviation Sarah Clark - Mississippi Editors Note: This is the first article in a ongoing series about women in ag aviation. Next month, we will read about Bethany Root from Missouri. by Graham Lavender Sarah Clark has been interested in airplanes since childhood. Born in Australia, Sarah moved to the U.S. when she was eight. At 15, she started washing aircraft in Mesa, Arizona in exchange for flying lessons. Working at the airport opened doors for Sarah to ride right-seat on charter flights, letting her gain invaluable experience after she obtained her private rating. Sarah decided that charter flying wasn’t for her and left aviation for the next decade. During her hiatus, Sarah worked for Harley Davidson testing the durability of all their models of motorcycles. After six years with Harley Davidson, Sarah landed a job as manager of a flight school. This move enabled her to further her aviation career and obtain her commercial pilot’s license. Sarah met Jim Risher, who was a flight instructor, charter, aerobatic and ag pilot, during her time at the flight school. She took an additional job with a Harley

Davidson dealership in North Carolina to earn enough money to further her flying career. Using a Harmon Rocket for transportation, Sarah flew coast to coast following Jim as he flew ag across the country. After spending considerable time around the ag industry following JIm, Sarah decided ag flying was for her. She
attended the 2014 Mississippi AAA convention where she started looking for her first seat, even giving testimony of her flying experience during the banquet as a speaker. Unbeknownst to Sarah, two long-time Mississippi operators, Mark Kimmel of Dixie Dusters in Itta Bena and Mark Gary of Gary Flying Service in Inverness, were beginning a partnership in an AT-502B.

only exception, was that none were ag aircraft. Mark Gary was in agreement with the hiring decision. With their history of trying different aircraft and ideas over the last 50 years, both Marks felt good about hiring Sarah and mentoring her.
Sarah Clark and Mark Gary outside at Gary Flying Service in Inverness, MS Both operators knew they were going to need a pilot who didn’t need a full season of spraying and that it would be extremely difficult to find a high-time, qualified 502 pilot who didn’t need to fly full-time. Mark Kimmel had the idea to hire Sarah. She had a significant amount of total time in a variety of aircraft, including several different tailwheel models. The
While Kimmel and Gary were formulating the idea of offering Sarah her first seat, Sarah and Jim were about to purchase a C-188. Their plan was to lease the pilot and aircraft to operators in Mississippi that found themselves behind, or in need of a backup aircraft. Mark Kimmel called Sarah and told her those plans were not necessary, offering her a seat in an AT-502B. The next hurdle was finding insurance in the AT-502B for a “0” ag-time pilot. Kimmel Aviation Insurance, located in Greenwood, stepped in with a prepared syllabus that an insurance underwriter would accept and insure. Frank Kimmel explained. “It was imperative the underwriter had full faith and confidence in the two ag operations, Dixie Dusters
and Gary Flying, even more so than with the pilot.” Sarah was required to fly the aircraft ten hours empty to get a feel for the aircraft. The next ten hours were devoted to learning the GPS system. Finally, the third ten hours were flown with water, starting light and working up to a full load. Emergency dumps were also done. Sarah’s first 1,000 paying acres were for fertilizing corn on Mark Kimmel’s farm where he could monitor her work. Satisfied with what he saw, Mark sent Sarah fertilizing corn for a Dixie Duster’s customer. After a successful year of flying, Sarah will apply herbicides in 2015. In accordance with the Mississippi Department of Agriculture, after 500 hours of ag-flying she will be able to apply glyphosate. Sarah’s biggest challenge has been restraining herself. With her spirited desire to fly more, she finds herself having to hold back. “Flying ag is the most challenging thing I have ever done

The Duster Dash In an industry that is passionate about airplanes and agriculture, a young boy who is passionate about computers and technology has found a way to belong.

When preteen Micah Rassi walked into work with his father, Clay Rassi, he realized that the programmers at AgSync spoke his language in a way that his peers had never understood. Over lunch, they discussed computer code and troubleshooting while he showed them the PC games he had recently designed and programmed. It didn’t take long before someone queried, “Do you think you could build a crop dusting game?” The timing was right because a few weeks earlier he determined that he was ready to learn the programming language, Objective C, in order to build an app to release to the iTunes store. “How hard could building an iPhone app be?” thought the very naïve student. After almost a year of learning, growing, frustrations, and successes, “The Duster Dash” was born. Now, at thirteen years of

age, Micah has released his first iOS application to the masses. Part school project, part entrepreneurial experiment, “The Duster Dash” is merely one stepping stone on Micah’s technical journey. With a family full of computer geeks, Micah began his love of tech at a young age. He assembled computers at age eight, participated in robotics camps by age ten, and learned to program at age eleven. He has started a development company named “Low Key Studios”, is growing the business with the help of his 12 year old brother Evan, and is excited to share his passion for programming with others. The Isolair 4500-206 Broadcaster® and 4500-500 Broadcaster® granular applicators use a slide gate to regulate the material flow from the hopper and are adjusted with a micrometer. The opening of this gate for larval mosquito control products is rather small because of the low application rates making calibration difficult and not reliably reproducible even though the settings are made with the micrometer. Because it is a gravity fed system, the head weight affects the flow resulting in a flow change as the hopper empties. Figure 1— Rotary metering gate prototype I.

Lee County Mosquito District (LCMCD), as well as others, have pondered how to improve this system and came to the realization that any improvement would need to be a positive displacement design to overcome the issues of a gravity feed system. An impeller driven design was decided upon, however, questions arose as to whether this would crush granular formulations or if jamming would be an issue. During development two other issues needed to be overcome; The Isolair® system incorporates a ventri between the blade gate and the exit fins. This creates a vacuum below the hopper. In the impeller delivery system the vacuum would draw the granules past the unloaded blades of the impeller when it was not rotating. The second additional issue was to prevent granules from flowing past the impeller by gravity when it was not moving.

A flexible impeller was chosen over a rigid one. Because of cost, availability and design, our proof-of-concept prototype and final design were based on an outboard motorboat engine water pump impeller (Fig. 1). In order to not disturb the external dimensions of the equipment, the rotary gate was designed to fit into the blade gate housing section of the Isolair® unit located just below the hopper (Fig. 2). To maximize the impeller size and accommodate the space, prototype II moves material left to right as well as top to bottom (Fig. 3). To prevent material from
flowing through the gate when it was not moving, an extension of the case surrounding the impeller was incorporated. This requires the impeller to push material upward before it exits the gate. The clearance between the impeller and its case is 1/8th inch. The flexible impeller prevents the granules from jamming while the selected clearance prevents binding at the top of the gate where the impeller closes against the case as well as between the impeller and the case. The combination of flexible impeller and relative large clearance creates little drag

allowing the use of a small motor which experiences a load of only 0.8 amp (Fig. 4). Granules are prevented from being sucked out of the hopper through the clearance gap along the unloaded side of the impeller by long bristled velveteen material, paint pad material, which blocks the gap (Fig. 5). With the positive displacement design, calibration is based on revolutions per minute (rpm) which provides a high level of precision and the ability to easily change calibrations in the field for differing material type and/or application rate. When GPS mediated larviciding is used in conjunction with the rotary metering gate, flow rate can be adjusted based on actual ground speed. LCMCD used its prototype III system during the 2013 mosquito season without any failures associated with the new design (Fig. 6). Calibrations were easily reproducible by resetting the impeller rpm to the prescribed setting. Unbalanced hoppers due to changes in calibrations no longer occurred and the hoppers were empty when they were expected to be empty. this year, GE added three new authorized service centers to bolster its global support network: Souther Field (Georgia), Mid Continent (Missouri) and Air Andes (Argentina). GE continues to add to its turboprop support network as the H Series operator base expands. Since entering service, GE has delivered more than 150 H Series engines to operators flying diverse aircraft, including Aircraft Industries’ L410 commuter plane and the Thrush 510G agricultural aircraft.
