At the end of the year, AgAir Update’s December cover story is a recap of the last 11 covers’ feature stories.

Beginning with the January edition, AgAir Update visited an Arkansas operator that uses the Vietnam warera UH-1H helicopter for spraying A different role for operations. With the February edition, Thrush Aircraft introduced its new simulator, the 510AS to AgAir Update readers.

The simulator was first seen and flown by ag-operators at the 2016 NAAA Ag Aviation Expo in Long Beach, California. The motion simulator was designed to introduce new ag-pilots Thrush Aircraft debuts to the 510 series Thrush aircraft. It advanced ag aviation also serves as a training tool for more training device experienced pilots to fulfill different scenarios a pilot can undertake during flight. Now, a second 510AS is based in Brazil for training purposes after its introduction at the 2017 SINDAG/Mercosul event in Canela.

The April edition brings in springtime with “Hou it’s done” cover feature story, a unique play on words for wife and husband operators Ashley and Justin Houston’s (Howston) Air Works, LLC based in Hazel, Kentucky. Relatively new to the industry, in five years the company grew from two Ag-Cats to two, new GE 510G Thrushes.

The Ipanema EMB203 was no exception. It flew much better than its predecessors, the EMB201 and EMB202, and was an all around good performing aircraft. However, its manufacturer, Embraer, did not stop with enhanced performance for the new EMB203. Its ergonomics were vastly improved, as well.

A comfortable ag-pilot while flying is a safer and more productive ag-pilot.

Seasons are changing On October 1st the National Interagency Fire Council (NIFC) reduced the National Situation Report from daily to weekly. On that same day, the National Preparedness Level was reduced to Level One, the lowest possible threat value. Both of these actions are indications that the 2017 fire season is over.

However, I have always used the reduction in Situation Reports as a yardstick to determine the official end to fire season.

Not only was this year’s fire season the most intense and busiest season that I ever experienced, it was also the most expensive by a wide margin for the federal government and many affected states. By the end of September, the record for federal expenditures for wildfire suppression was shattered with over two billion dollars spent. This is about double what is normally spent. Then, in early October the devastating California fires hit and another one billion dollars were spent in that state alone. Nearly nine million acres burned in the U.S. versus about six million acres for the ten-year average.

New Exclusive Use SEAT contracts will have to be issued this winter and I certainly hope a little common sense is injected into the bidding process so we can avoid the fiasco experienced last spring. The government

tried to pit vendors against each other in what boiled down to a bidding war and the result was the government wound up spending much more than expected when their illdevised plan collapsed on itself. Hopefully, a lesson was learned and a fair and level process will come out of it.

Starting in the 2018 fire season, the entire fleet of federal contracted firefighting aircraft will run on jet-fuel. Neptune Aviation’s Lockheed P-2V air tankers were retired when their contracts expired this year. A retirement ceremony was held at their Missoula, Montana headquarters on October 1st. Less than a week after the ceremony, two of them, T-05 and T-14, were pressed back into service to assist with the fires in Northern California. This marks the end of an era and I thank you for your service ladies and gentlemen of the P-2Vs. As ADS-B equipment is installed in more and more aircraft, it has become a helpful tool in the aerial firefighting business. On large fires or in smoky conditions, it makes it easy to determine the position of other aircraft.

Situational awareness is improved leading to a safer environment in the fire traffic area.

By 2020, it will be required in all aircraft utilizing the national airspace system.

In August, hundreds of fires burning across the Western U. S. and Canada were putting up so much smoke that visibility was reduced to less than VFR conditions across vast areas. In these dangerous conditions, aircraft dispatches continued to come through. If one flight crew turned down an order, dispatch would just continue fishing around until they found a crew that would accept it. This is wrong. Pilots are taught safety is first, yet the government does not hesitate to ask us to fly in unsafe conditions. I believe if one crew turns down a mission because of risk involved, dispatch should put everything on hold until conditions improve. During this period, I turned down or aborted several missions. About a week after conditions did improve, the Department of Interior published a Safety Memo that basically said we should not fly in visibility limiting smoke.

Firefighting funding for the future

Recently, two documents emerged from the federal government that make for an interesting comparison and provide a glimpse into the future of how wildland firefighting will be funded. The first document is from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is titled “Fiscal Year 2018 Budget Justification”. It is a large document at 325 pages and as the title implies, it is written justification for spending within the agency from building maintenance to acquisition of aircraft and everything in between. Intended readership is for lawmakers whose job is to approve spending and of course the American public who vote those lawmakers into office. The second document is titled “The President’s Proposed Fiscal Year 2018 Wildland Fire Budget”.

It is a much smaller document at just a few pages and contains very little text and a whole lots of numbers. This budget was passed by the House of Representatives in September 2017 but at this writing in mid-November the Senate has yet to take any action.

The average layman could be confused by either document until it is explained how funding for wildfire management actually happens.

There are two budgets involved. One is with the USDA which administers the United States Forest Service (USFS) and the other is with the Department of Interior (DOI) which administers the Bureau

of Land Management (BLM), the National Parks Service, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and several other agencies. For instance, the USFS oversees the large and very large air tanker program along with Type One helicopters. The BLM manages the Single Engine Air Tankers (SEAT) and Type Two and Three helicopters. Both agencies operate their own smoke jumper and and aerial supervision programs. There has been talk for years of combining the two budgets, which would do away with a tremendous amount of duplication. For example, document number one from above is intended for the USDA only, while the DOI has to produce their own parallel document. The President’s budget proposal includes both of these agencies.

As reflected from both documents, the overall bottom line of the budget remains pretty flat or unchanged from FY 2017. However, under the surface there are some big changes coming. There will be a 5.7% reduction in wildland fire staffing. This will come on the administrative end while boots on the ground at the fire line numbers will remain the same. This trend is evident in the field like in Montana where they abandoned their satellite SEAT reload base program for a lack of personnel to staff the bases. All funding for research and study of wildfire has been cut from the budget for FY 2018. This doesn’t mean these programs will end, but the funding will have to come from

Funding for wildfire preparation and suppression has been increased by 24% and 31%, respectively. This is a big difference as these two programs were already the largest in the budget. It might be noted that funds for all Exclusive Use contracts are derived from preparedness, while those for On Call contracts come out of suppression funding.

There seems to either be an effort to increase the size of the programs or to correct cost overruns that have occurred in past years. It could be a combination of the two as Exclusive Use large air tanker contracts are set to increase from sixteen to twenty percent for FY 2018, while in FY 2017 cost overruns began occurring by early mid-season.

Flights’ two Canadair CL-415 Super Scoopers. This comes as a surprise because these effective tools could make a big difference when the right conditions existed. Evidently, USFS management decided they were not cost effective. They are a very expensive piece of equipment with elevated operating costs and the same mission could be accomplished with the more abundant Fire Boss at a much less cost. All other aviation asset numbers will remain the same with the exception of Exclusive Use SEATs, which will drop to thirty-two from a total of thirty-four in FY 2017.

The USFS contracts for large air tankers are very complicated and the documents that are made available to the public are heavily redacted leaving key elements unavailable. One questionable clause in the Next Generation contract limits retardant tank size to between three thousand and five thousand gallons. Somehow, they worked around this requirement to allow Tanker Ten to operate their DC-10s that have eleven thousand plus gallon tanks. The DC-10s have become very popular as you often see all three of them working at the same time.

Global Supertanker recently filed a protest against this requirement to allow their Boeing B747-400 with its nineteen thousand plus gallon tank to work under a federal contract in the upcoming season. The General Accounting Office has ruled in favor of Global Supertanker while questioning why such a requirement is even in place. This opens the door for the Supertanker as well as any other Very Large Air Tankers (VLATs) that may be coming down the pipes.

Each year the amount of money spent fighting wildfires in the United States grows and each year the allocated budget struggles to keep up.

The figures in the President’s budget are only for federal efforts and do not include the hundreds of millions of dollars spent by states and other local agencies. In the USFS Justification Document, they make the case that in the future they will make an effort to recoup more funds from states or private properties when federal assets are used for suppression. Inflation is partially to blame for budget increases, but aviation resources are by far the largest piece of the pie in prevention and suppression efforts.

FY 2018 will be the first year the entire fleet will operate on jet fuel. It is really amazing at what gets accomplished each year on available funds.

When one compares the military budget to the wildland fire budget,it is only a drop in the bucket. Wildland firefighting is a real war, too.

Air Tractor AT-802F begins firefighting work in Croatia OLNEY, TX—Further attesting to its capabilities as a “worldclass” firefighter, the first Air Tractor AT-802F has been delivered to the Croatian government. The aircraft will be used for patrolling and initial attack duties along the country’s heavily-forested coastal areas just in time for the 1997 fire season, which usually runs from June through September.

Plans include delivery of a second 802F for the 1998 season. Janko Zlataric, president of authorized Air Tractor dealer MMCS in Augsburg, Germany, handled the sale and delivery of the two-seat, 800-gallon turbine powered aircraft.

“We believe this will be the first of many Air Tractors working in Croatia,” said Zlataric.

“The Croat government, which previously has been utilizing Canadair CL-215 and CL415 firebombers, was very impressed with the capabilities of the plane, along with its

significantly-lower operating costs compared to the larger air tankers.”

The aircraft includes the very latest electronic equipment, including a GPS system and transponder. Zlataric, along with a government engineer for technology from the Croatian government, felt strongly that this type of equipment must be included on this first Air Tractor, and then be standard on all future aircraft purchases to help standardize the country’s firefighting operations.

He has been utilizing the 500-gallon AT502 the past two years for firefighting work throughout the region. This past spring, he flew four members of the Croat government, including the Deputy Minister of the Interior, to the Spanish firefighting operation of Avialsa, another Air Tractor dealer who operates several AT-802F aircraft under contract with the Spanish government.

“It just so happened that during the course of demonstrating the AT-802F, the person who holds the same job in the Spanish government as the Croatian Deputy Minister was in attendance,” explained Zlataric. “So they had a good opportunity to talk with each other about problems and concerns they both experience in their respective countries, and how the Air Tractor could best meet those requirements. Needless to say, I think this was an important factor in the Croats choosing the Air Tractor.”

Croatia has future plans to greatly expand the number of remote fire bases throughout the country, taking existing airfields and converting them to serve the needs of firefighting crews.

“There are many countries who could benefit from the Air Tractor’s firefighting capabilities, including Italy, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria and many others,” said Zlataric. “I have no doubt that once these countries have a chance to see how well the AT-802F works in Croatia, they will follow suit and begin including the Air Tractor in their firefighting air forces.”

An ag-aviation operator and director of SINDAG (the Brazilian national association

of ag-operators) Tiago Textor of Aero Tex Aviação Agrícola participated in firefighting

operations beginning on August 29 until September 3 to combating fires in the National Park of Brasília. Textor and pilot Erasmo Carlos Griebeler gave support to the company Americasul Aeroagrícola who is contracted by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio, which manages the park).

The action involved teams of ICMBio and Ibama firefighters, firefighter soldiers and volunteers. Air support was provided by four Air Tractors, two from the Federal District Fire Brigade and the other two piloted

by Textor and Griebeler, in addition to an observation helicopter.

All teams remained on alert for the risk of new outbreaks. This is mainly due to the climatic conditions in the region - severe drought, high winds and high temperature.

Spray beyond the day, fighting fire at night For years, Aviation Specialties Unlimited, (ASU) has pioneered the use of night vision goggles (NVGs) in numerous industries around the world.

With a mission to save lives, ASU helped the first non-military operators launch night time operations in the emergency medical services sector, law enforcement airborne units, agriculture, and for the past several years, aided in the training of operators using NVGs for fighting fires at night.

“Fighting fires at night is a critical operation that helps save lives, property and combats the destructive forces of fires like we have experienced throughout the U.S., Canada, South America and Australia,” said Watlington. “We launched our NVG Firefighting training program in 2010 to increase the safety of operators fighting fires at night with NVGs. Pilots know flying conditions at night are safer with NVGs and when you combine that with the fire’s behavior at night due to climate conditions and reduced traffic, it make sense to continue the fight into the night.”

Agriculture spray applicators know that night time conditions allow for better applications. This same principle has proven to be true for fighting fires also. At night, in most instances, temperatures fall, humidity increases and winds die down. This makes fighting fires at night ideal.

Using NVGs at night also help pilots identify hotspots that can fuel fires even further the next day.

In 2013, Helicopter Express was awarded a contract by the U.S. Forrest Service for using NVGs to fight fire at night North of L. A. in Lancaster, California. ASU assisted by training the OAS inspectors, U. S. Forest Service and Helicopter Express as well as actively flying with Helicopter Express for the first month of the contract which played a vital role in preparing the different groups for their important mission.

“Fighting fires at night using NVGs is not a new concept,” said ASU Director of Business Development and Sales Kim Harris. “This method was used in the late 70s and NVGs today have advanced significantly with better clarity and provide an unmatched level of situational awareness and safety.”

With Helicopter Express currently scheduled to successfully complete the 5-year contract in November of this year and an RFP from the USFS out for a new 5-year contract beginning in 2018, there is still a growing need to fight fires at night and combat the devastation experienced by many this summer. ASU remains committed to helping advance the expansion of more operators with the ability to fight fires at night.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department began operating with NVGs regularly in 2005. In 2011, ASU began training operators on the use of NVGs for aerial firefighting at night. ASU’s Director of Operations Justin Watlington, is an experienced pilot, certified instructor on both fixed wing and rotorcraft for NVGs.

Reborn Ultra Thrush Revisited

water on board, as requested. Even though I’d flown the aircraft empty, half full and hopper overrun four months ago (See AAU August 2017), it was still a strange bird in a strange town. So, I opted for the half full hopper first to be followed with a max 525-gallon load on the second flight. If you remember from the first article, the Ultra Thrush has an enlarged hopper to a measured 525 gallons.

The Ultra Thrush awaits its evaluation flight at Tulare’s Mefford Field Airport.

I booked a Delta flight to Fresno, a rental car there and arrived at the Tulare airport five minutes after 5 p.m. on Friday, as promised.

I had about an hour and half of reasonable daylight remaining.

Dave and Charlie Gazarek, Johnston Aircraft Service’s Airframe Shop Foreman, had the Ultra Thrush full of fuel and 250 gallons of

I expected the Hartzell propeller to significantly outperform the 108” experimental threeblade Avia. Although, last June was my first experience flying behind an Avia prop (that I can remember). I based the assumption on previous experience with the Hartzell 108” prop on the Air Tractor 502XP and Aero Innovations -34 Thrush prop conversions.

This prop is also very similar to the propeller Thrush Aircraft installed on the 510G in 2011.

In that particular scenario, my first flight in the 510G, it had the same three-blade prop as the 510P with its PT6-34AG engine, except the 510G’s three-blade prop was shotpeened. When Thrush Aircraft changed to the Hartzell four-blade, I flew the aircraft again and without question the performance

improved significantly. Thrush Aircraft has since installed an Avia prop on the 510G, but I’ve yet to evaluate it.

When I flew Jim Mills’ Aero Innovations Thrush, he had lined up three Thrush aircraft to compare one full load after another. It was one of the rare times I made evaluation flights where I started out with fully loaded aircraft. The first Thrush was the standard 510P, the next one was a dual cockpit version with the four-blade Hartzell propeller and the third Thrush with a single cockpit, four-blade Hartzell prop and an extended engine mount.

The second aircraft flew better than the first, but the third aircraft with its combination of engine mount lengthening and four-blade propeller made a different animal of the 510P Thrush; much improved in every way.

I have to be as honest as possible about the difference in the 108” Avia and the 108” Hartzell prop as installed on the Ultra Thrush. In June, it was in the high 80’s degrees Fahrenheit outside air temperature with a slight headwind for takeoff. A Google Earth-measured ground roll was more or less 1,700 feet with a max 525-gallon loaded

Reiterating the article, the Ultra Thrush complete with 108” experimental Avia prop had absolutely no problem handling the load on take-off, going to the field (easily up on the step at 160 MPH) and in the turns after loaded spray runs.

This late October evaluation flight of the Ultra Thrush with the Hartzell four-blade propeller was expected to be even better than the evaluation flight in June. It was late in the day with outside temperatures in the high 60s degrees Fahrenheit, 20 degrees cooler than in June. I had equal to or maybe even slightly more headwind for takeoff.

With the MVP-50 trying its best to blink warnings at 71-72 PSI torque during take-off, I lifted off the Ultra Thrush at approximately the same 1,700-foot mark, maybe a few feet sooner. It is hard to note the exact rotation point, except it was at or about at the same taxiway turnoff as in June’s take-off.

I was somewhat disappointed. I expected to break ground sooner. The Hartzell will

equal the take-off performance of the 108” Avia propeller, maybe exceed it some, but not significantly. Just how important is this observation?

It is rare to find ag airstrips under 2,000 feet.

I know there are some, but 2,000 feet and more is the norm. So a 1,700-foot takeoff roll should work for most airstrips - pavement and wind on the nose helps. The ferry speed to the field in the Ultra Thrush was equal with either propeller at the same power settings traveling at 160 MPH loaded. I found fuel consumption to be approximately the same for both props. At 60 PSI and 1,950 RPM (which is plenty of power fully loaded), expect to consume 70 GPH. As the load lightens, a power reduction to 50 PSI will bring the fuel consumption down to 60 GPH. However, It is not how much fuel burned in an hour, but how many acres are covered per gallon of fuel.

Both props hold the Ultra Thrush in turns in the fully loaded condition. Actually, the typical Thrush flat turns made loaded aren’t necessary, as the Ultra Thrush easily climbs

So, which propeller is the best fit for the Ultra Thrush? Depends on the operator.

The Avia cost less initially. At overhaul, or in between, one blade can be replaced as needed instead of all three. But, the only U.S. based Avia propeller overhaul shop is in Florida. However, blades and propellers will be stocked at Cascade Aircraft Conversions and Johnston Aircraft Service, Inc. The Hartzell is an American made, well supported propeller, but does cost more.

Regardless which propeller the operator selects for the Cascade Aircraft Conversions upgrade in power to the PT6A-41/42 Ultra Thrush, both will perform well and make a 510-gallon Thrush an exceptional performer under any flight conditions.

Bifold doors from Schweiss Doors save planes, hangars from damage during Category 4 hurricane FAIRFAX, MN – Occasionally, customers suggest that Schweiss hydraulic and bifold doors may be more heavy duty than they need to be, but you won’t hear that from pilots who house their airplanes in hangars at the Aransas County Airport in Rockport, Texas.

The small gulf town of Rockport is located 30 miles north of Corpus Christi. The neighboring city of Fulton bore the brunt of Category 4 Hurricane Harvey that wreaked havoc in Texas in late August 2017. Harvey hit the shores with sustained winds in excess of 145 mph for a period of 5 hours with wind gusts topping 160 mph. Rockport faced hurricane force winds for more than 13 hours.

Airport manager Mike Geer was so excited to report that hangars with Schweiss bifold doors were still standing he called Schweiss Doors owner Mike Schweiss.

“Those doors, in large part, are why we have buildings here that are still standing,” Geer says. “We lost seven buildings all together for a total of about 90,000 square feet of hangar space. I believe the Schweiss doors are why the buildings that are still standing are still up. On everything else, we lost the doors and the buildings followed right after. When we rebuild, I guarantee you we will be putting Schweiss doors on these hangars.”

Airport are 60 by 17 feet. Eight bifold doors measuring 43 by 14 feet, 10 inches were installed on the T-hangars. Liftstrap doors are wind-rated at 130 mph and include hurricane pins to further secure them to the hangars.

“We have eight bifold doors on T-hangars and they are all still standing with every hangar intact,” Geer says. “We have another identical hangar next to it that had one of Schweiss’ competitor’s doors on it. That hangar was picked up and thrown to the ground because the doors failed. Our T-hangars that survived were the biggest deal to me. They took a full frontal and then a full force again after the eye crossed over. They got hammered. They have some cosmetic damage, but the amazing thing to me was the doors held. The hurricane

David reports, ‘I flew the job over 63.58 hobb hours and 14 days which included some weather delays. Runs were 11 miles long with some runs requiring three 4000 lb loads. The material ran out on the next to last pass being off by only 1 ton on 903 tons.

Auto spray and variable rate prescription tests

The practice of variable rate treatments (VRT) has been around for some time and applied in ground precision farming. However the adoption of VRT is still limited for aerial agricultural applications. VRT can apply to seeds, crop protection (CP), or fertilizer.

Farmers normally apply fertilizers based on the average yield of a whole field. However, the land may be more or less productive in different locations on the same field depending on soil and moisture conditions.

When supplying crop protectants to farmers, Bayer requests they be applied in the most effective and responsible manner according to label directions.

At the Canadian Aerial Applicators Association convention in February 2017, Doug Mackay, an agricultural engineer with Bayer’s Digital Farming department, met with Lai Nguyen, an engineer of AgNav and they discussed testing Bayer’s prescription files in AG-NAV’s Platinum, the most advanced GPS guidance system developed by AGNAV for aerial application. After receiving a sample file from Mackay, Nguyen tested it in the Platinum and found it working well. However the question was how they could verify the performance in-field. After

Pottage is also a young and experienced pilot who is always advancing technology to find a better way to serve his customers. After Mackay talking about the purpose of the prescription test, Pottage accepted the invitation to join the team. Provincial Airways has airplanes equipped with a Platinum system, auto spray system and flow controller. That’s all we needed for a prescription test.

The first test was intended to see if a prescription file made for ground precision farming could be used for aerial application.

The prescription file defined the spray and no-spray polygons as shown in Figure 1.

Would the auto on/off spray respond fast enough? How about the applied rate? With continuous changes in spray on/off, would the flow controller adjust flow fast enough to meet the target rate? Pottage selected an area in Saskatchewan for the test, Mackay made the prescription file and Nguyen helped Pottage to set up the Platinum for the test. Since Provincial Airways was super busy during the spray season, the first test was done mainly by Pottage whenever he found time and the weather allowed. August 21 was an exciting day for us when Pottage announced he would perform the test on that day. Steven Glas, a Provincial Airways’ pilot, flew the aircraft and followed the guidance on the Platinum lightbar to keep the aircraft on the right track. All spray on/off and flow adjustments were left for the auto spray and flow controller to manage.

The result from the first test was very encouraging. Most of the spray on/off were done precisely at the boundaries of polygons on the VRT map. There were some missing or spray over no-spray zones because the distance from spray on to off or vice versa was too short (less than 0.6 seconds of flight) as shown in Figure 2.

The spray polygons were prescribed with the rate of 4.0 gallons per acre (GPA) and nospray polygons 0.0 GPA. There were many small polygons on the VRT map. With the aircraft flying at 150 MPH or 240 km/h, it took only half-a-second or less to cross the variable rate boundaries.

Mackay made two prescription files: One for on/off test with constant rate and one for variable rate test. The variable rates changed between 0, 2, 3, 4 GPA based on zones and inseason satellite imagery. See Figures 5 and 6.

In practice, due to mechanical limitation the spray boom cannot be cut off then turned on within half a second. Mackay agreed to merge polygons when making the next prescription file. The team planned for the second test.

The second test aimed to try two things: First test the new prescription file made for aerial application and second, test variable application rates on the same field.

Mackay also wanted to test where the actual application reaches the ground in the zones when turning spray on/off. This requires a weather station to measure spray drift from wind speed and direction during flight. Even though the AgNav Platinum could calculate

Mackay drove from his office in Calgary, Alberta to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to attend the test. Pottage also set up a GoPro camera to video the application.

In conclusion, variable rate treatment (VRT) technology is well-used for ground applications due to slow spray speed and controllable nozzles. However, the adoption of this technology in aerial application is slow.

The results from variable prescription tests done by Provincial Airways, Bayer Digital Farming and AG-NAV proved that VRT could work well in aerial applications, as well.

When making a prescription file for aerial application, to optimize VRT results, one should take into account the spray speed of the aircraft, response of auto spray system and flow adjustment ability of the flow controller to define boundaries for application on/off and variable rates.

Airways has could work in the range of 9 to 90 GPM (35 to 350 LPM). It was found that the flow controller worked the best for 2 and 3 GPA. It was able to adjust the flow rate to meet the target from boom off to on within 0.5 seconds and maintain the same rate regardless of variation in aircraft ground speed. However when the target rate was changed from 2 or 3 GPA to 4 GPA, it took up to a second to meet the target rate. There might be some room for improvement here for the AgNav flow controller when the flow rate is near the extreme value. See Figure 8.

The target rates were forecasted half a second ahead of time when the aircraft flew the field from one end to the other. Due to wind, spray speed varied from 143 MPH to 152 MPH. At an averaged spray speed of 150 MPH (240 km/h) and a 66-foot swath width, the flow rate was about 40 gallons per minute (GPM) or 160 liters per minute (LPM) for 2 GPA, 60 GPM (240 LPM) for 3 GPA and 80 GPM (320 LPM) for 4 GPA. the no-spray zones. When checking closely, it was found that the crossing distance on the no-spray zones were all less than 100 feet or half-a-second of flight. All other spots had the boom spraying right on-themoney. See Figure 7.

Funnier times in the early days of crop dusters

Back in the 1960s, I was flying Stearmans for A.T. Morgan in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

We had many long, hard days seeding, fertilizing and spraying rice, soybeans and fall pastureland.

It was not unusual to log 800-900 hours a season on the old radial R-985s with their 450 HP. At the end of rice season, pilots were ready for a little R & R. Those long, hot Louisiana days with heavy loads, short strips, cockpit temps of 120°F, blistered faces and split lips from hard shell bugs coming over the little windshield took its toll on us. But, we loved every minute of it.

One slow day with rice season just about over, our pilot in Leland, Mississippi (one of

Morgan’s satellite bases) called to say he would be flying down one of his 450 Stearmans that was due for an engine change and would take back a 220 HP Stearman sprayer for cotton spraying. The pilot, Lloyd Steen, said he would be in a hurry, so he couldn’t spend much time on the ground. And if we could, when he comes down to have the 220 idling on the ramp. He wanted to take right off, getting back to Mississippi.

The day came when Lloyd called to say he was on the way. A couple of us got with A.T. and the head mechanic and asked if we could pull a prank on Lloyd. A.T. asked, “What?”

We replied we wanted to turn the prop blades backwards on the 220, so Lloyd would have to spend extra time visiting us. Morgan

agreed, so we reversed the prop blades. When we expected to see Lloyd, we fired up the 220 and left it running on the ramp. Lloyd appeared on the horizon, landed, shut down the 450, pulled out his seat cushions and put them in the 220.

Shaking everyone’s hand, Lloyd said, “Gotta go.” Up in the cockpit he went, strapped in and poured the coal to the 220, only to back off the ramp! Disbelief showed in his startled eyes, as he shut down the 220.

Crawling out of the Stearman, jerking off his cloth helmet and goggles, he began throwing cushions at everyone and cussing a blue streak. About that time, A.T. walked up and said, “You have just been had. So, come in the office for a few minutes and rest

while they turn the blades around.”

“OK,” Lloyd replied and started laughing.

“Ya’II got me this time!”

Then, there was a young pilot who came to fly with us one season. This fellow, being a fairly new pilot, knew everything about being a crop duster. Actually, he proved more of a “pain in the butt” with his know-it-all attitude. Every morning he would rush out to be the first take-off. This fellow made a big show of running out, jumping up on the Stearman’s wing, vault into the cockpit, sliding into the seat, feet hitting the rudder pedals and grabbing the stick seemingly all at the same time.

Eventually, a couple of us arrived early one morning, greased the rudder pedals and added a coating of grease on the control stick, vowing to get this show-off’s attention. Sure enough, after getting his schedule for the day, the young fellow at a fast clip, jumped up on the wing and over into the seat, feet on the rudders and grabbing the stick all in one movement. Shortly followed by a shriek.

The young pilot slowly crawled from the cockpit clutching his groin and with a high pitched voice remarked, “OK, I get the message.” You know, that young pilot soon got to be a regular pilot!

Another comical event took place when two pilots had been seeding rice and one of the pilots decided to change the air filter. He felt that on that hot day his engine seemed not to be developing full power. The other pilot continued planting rice.

After installing new air filters, the pilot asked the farmer to crack the throttle while he spun the prop. “Ok,” the farmer replied while crawling on the wing. He opened the throttle and turned on the mags.

“Contact,” yelled the farmer. The pilot gave the Hamilton Standard a mighty pull.

Instantly, the 450 roared to life and lurched forward. The scared farmer lit out for other places while the pilot ran around the wing to try to throttle back the 450. However, the tail of the Stearman caught the pilots pants, nearly ripping them off and the plane

continued to accelerate. The pilot began chasing the out of control Stearman as it started making a wide circle. After chasing the plane for a few minutes without catching it, the loaded Stearman’s circle got tighter and tighter until one leg of the landing gear collapsed and the plane came to a stop, the prop chopping into the hard black gumbo clay. Finally, the pilot was able to shut down the 450. The prop blades were shortened to the bottom of the engine.

It was really a bad situation there for a while with the loader truck, a rice truck and several pickups all in the potential path of the runaway airplane. But after everything calmed down, we all laughed at the pilot with his ripped pants fluttering in the breeze and him chasing the airplane.

Of course, A.T.Morgan didn’t think it was all that funny. The moral of the story is don’t let a farmer “crack” the throttle on a 450. That farmer must have been used to cracking throttles on tractors from about halfway to full!

Good stewardship

At times, technology can be incredible and extremely useful in the most timely ways.

I am an owner/operator of an aerial application business in Southwest Georgia. So naturally, for me, as I’m working I keep my eyes peeled for potential problems on my customers and other growers properties and fields while I am flying over and around them.

The image below was taken post Hurricane Irma. I was busy spraying a peanut field adjacent to another that I was going to be spraying, and I noticed that the irrigation had been started. It began watering the half that had cotton on it. I thought, “No big deal, I will be spraying the peanuts on the west side”. So it came time to spray the peanuts in that field.

As I was finishing up with my clean up passes, I was flying west to east and it aligned me

Recognizing the financial impact it could have on this farmer’s cotton field, not to mention his pocket book, I immediately climbed to altitude and proceeded to call him on my cell phone. I quickly explained the imminent disaster about to take place. I told him I would immediately get off the phone so he could call someone to go turn it off before the irrigation system struck the tree.

“No need to” he said, “I am shutting it down right now from my cell phone as we speak”.

I circled until I could confirm to him that it was indeed shut down.

As the excitement in my voice was obvious I told him it was a positive shut down and just in time too, two feet from disaster. I snapped the picture and sent it to him. He then knew what to expect when arriving to clear the tree. He was extremely grateful and said to me, “Sometimes we get lucky”.

I agree, that sometimes we get lucky. But being a good steward and having good stewardship to the people in and out of agriculture has nothing to do with luck, it has a lot to do with professionalism.
