A Great Loss
I
t is with great sadness when I say the industry has lost a dear friend to both ag-aviation and particularly to the SEAT industry. On February 14, Marc Mullis passed away due to complications from cancer. Marc was the first and will be the last chief editor of AgAir Update’s special section, AirFire & Forestry. To him, I dedicate this commentary. A little over 15 years ago, I had the idea there was a need for a special section in AgAir Update that focused on the Single Engine Air Tankers. I had known Marc for more years than I can remember, from the days when he was an ag-operator in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, a second generation ag-pilot. I had visited him there, one of the first ag-operators to build a drive-thru hangar/ loading facility with an apartment. I don’t recall the details, but I’m almost sure I spent the night at the hangar. I remember Marc insisted that I fly his RV-4, which I did. Marc left the ag-aviation business to become a full-time SEAT pilot flying for the Mitchell’s M & M Air Service based in Beaumont, Texas. Rarely there, Marc spent most of his down time in Fort Stockton, Texas, but flew throughout the West working fires and during the off-fire season, flying brush control. It was last November that I received Marc’s quarterly editorial for the December edition of AirFire & Forestry. “Bill, this will be my last editorial for AFF. I’ve been diagnosed with terminal cancer and I have only a few months to live.” To say being blindsided would be an understatement. Marc told me I could tell our readers about his plight as I saw fit. My decision was to let Marc tell whoever he wanted and my turn would come now, after his passing. AirFire & Forestry has been retired in memory of Marc. Graham and I have toyed with the idea that

AirFire & Forestry needed rebranding and become more inclusive of the entire aerial firefighting industry and less about forestry, moving that part into the ag-aviation pages of AgAir Update. With Marc’s impending passing, we decided the time had come to make this change and at the same time memorialize Marc. Thus, the formation of that publication will be AerialFire. In my mind, there is no question that Marc’s influence on the SEAT industry as an active SEAT pilot and editor of AirFire & Forestry, was profound. AirFire & Forestry has experienced its success largely in part because of Marc’s ever present guidance and advice. To continue to move forward with AerialFire without Marc is going to be challenging. I know I’ll ask him, in empathy, “Marc, what do you think?” Or, “Marc what would you do?.” Marc, our friend and mentor, may you rest in peace and as you always closed your editorials with, “I hope to see you in the mountains one day.”

T
he history of the Egert family in aviation began in 1969 when João Osório Egert, father of three brothers, decided to take his private pilot course in São Borja. After 14 years
working as executive pilot for airplane owners in the city of Itaqui, Rio Grande do Sul (the south of Brazil), he decided to enter into ag aviation. João Osório became an ag pilot in 1983 and flew for four years for an operator in Rosário do Sul, as well as treating crops in São Pedro do Sul.

When that operator quit, João decided to buy his first ag plane, an Ipanema 201, which still belongs to Destaque Aviacao Agricola. It has never had an accident and never sat an idle season in the past 30 years. In 1995, brothers Caetano Egert, João Osório Egert Filho and Jonatas Egert started working for their father’s operation, João Osório Aviação Agrícola, which still had only the one Ipanema. The three brothers had taken the agriculture technician course that is required in Brazil to mix chemicals and load ag planes. Caetano, the eldest, worked as a wingman, while João Filho dedicated himself to administrative work, creating controls that didn’t exist back then. João Osório Aviação Agrícola lasted 14 years operating up two Ipanemas, the second one leased. Caetano became an ag-pilot in 1999 and worked as a hired pilot for three years. After that, he joined his father as a partner and they started CJ Aero Agrícola, thus starting the second phase of the ag-aviation history of the Egert family, which lasted for six years. They operated up to three Ipanemas. João Osório Senior left C.J. Aero Agrícola in 2008 selling his share of the company to the three brothers. Thus was born Destaque Aviação Agrícola, starting the third phase of the Egert
ag-aviation history with two brothers as partners, Caetano Egert and João Osório Egert Filho (Junior). They helped their younger brother, Jonatas, by paying for his pilot courses, which he paid back through his work. Today, the three brothers work hard to attend all the demands they have. Caetano is the chief pilot and the one who flies the most. He is in his third season flying a turbine AT-402A, with over 10,000 total hours spraying crops. João Osório is the manager, being responsible for area mapping, pricing, support trucks, fuel and airplane support, customer relations, collections and coordinating the company’s administration. Jonatas is the number two pilot, already with six seasons as a pilot (he was a wingman for 11 seasons) having over 4,000 flight hours today. Jonatas flew his first season in a turbine this year. Still based at São Pedro do Sul, they work all over the Rio Grande do Sul state looking for new customers. Taking advantage of the advent of fungicide applications on rice, in just five years they have expanded to an eight ag-plane fleet, all of them owned by the company. In 2014, Destaque Aviação Agricola had its busiest year treating over 170,000 hectares (420,000 acres) flown in 30 counties with 3,500 hours flown from four bases.

Destaque Aviação Agrícola flies in a region with many small farms and many clients from several satellite strips, resulting in multiple ferries during a day. The average field size is 50 hectares (123 acres) and many satellite strips in several counties require a lot of coordination, mapping and collection, as well as coordination for ground teams that drive up to 250 miles a day in their trucks. Their market has changed in recent years; rice, which once made up for 70% of all jobs, now is less than 35%. On the other hand, there was a significant increase in flying on soybeans, corn and cover crop seeding. Despite many soybean farmers owning their own late-model ground rigs, Destaque is betting on ag aviation’s higher efficiency, outsourcing and timelier treatments when compared to ground rigs. When a rice crisis resulted in many farmers defaulting their payments, Destaque Aviação Agrícola started a new policy of dropping risky customers. This reduced its client base by 40% in 2015, which included not flying in a whole region. Despite that, Destaque has been growing back to its earlier size at about 10% each year with select customers. A small but steady growth, with 100% of the customers paying their bills. Due to that,Destaque Aviação Agrícola, which had flown 3,500 hours a year, reduced
its operations to 2,500 hours and now is up to 2,800 flight hours per year. Despite all these difficulties, Destaque Aviação Agrícola managed to grow from a single Ipanema to a fleet of eight airplanes. Today, the company has one Ipanema 201 (the brothers’ father’s original), four Ipanemas 201A, one Ipanema 202 and one Air Tractor 402A. There are plans to add a second AT-402A, which will be flown by brother Jonatas. All Destaque Aviação Agrícola Ipanemas burn ethanol for fuel. Those which originally burned avgas having been converted to ethanol. However, high ethanol prices in Rio Grande do Sul during the last two years has virtually negated its advantage. This is primarily due to ethanol engines higher fuel consumption, 100 liters per hour compared to 72-lph for avgas. All Destaque Aviação Agrícola ag planes are equipped with CP or T-jet nozzles for herbicide work and rotary atomizers for insecticide and fungicide applications, the latter two comprising over 60% of all liquid applications. Destaque Aviação Agrícola’s plan is to operate turbine aircraft on bigger contracts, due to the timeliness, quality and efficiency in applications. Plus, the Air Tractor has better cockpit ergonomics resulting in less pilot fatigue during the long spray season days. The company is focused on continued
training of its personnel, attending several courses concerning aviation and management, including ANAC and Seripa courses, besides mandatory ones, and attending SINDAG (Brazil’s NAAA equivalent) and other conventions. Destaque Aviação Agrícola is based in São Pedro do Sul because it is at the geographic center of the state, but they work hard to find new customers for their eight airplanes. Their philosophy is to move at Caetano’s speed with João Osório’s efficient management and Jonatas’ sharp eyesight. Knowing their own potential, the brothers have plans to fly in other states, in the search for bigger markets. The brothers are the hardest workers in the company during the spray season; the two pilots are the ones flying the most, and the manager gets to stay at work for over 15 hours a day during the seven-month spray season that lasts from October to April. Destaque Aviação Agrícola has been through all kinds of mishaps; accidents, competitors of all kinds, non-paying customers, low yield due to small and scattered fields, etc., but thanks to the three united brothers’ hard work and rigid administrative controls, they never finished one year at a loss.

FAIRFAX, MN– Agtegra Cooperative has expanded its service area to reach rural customers in 60 communities throughout North and South Dakota. One of those communities is Harrold, S.D., home of the Harrold Municipal Airport, site of Agtegra’s new crop spraying hangar, complete with two hydraulic doors from Schweiss Doors. The Harrold airport, with its 2,250-foot by 200-foot asphalt runway, is just one of Agtegra’s success and growth stories. The cooperative has expanded its custom air crop spraying operations to a seven-plane fleet that operates out of the Huron, Highmore, Clark, Webster and Miller areas. The cooperative purchased its first Schweiss door in 2011, a 70-foot by 14-foot bifold with liftstraps. Recently, Agtegra contacted Schweiss to purchase two 70-foot by 14-foot one-piece hydraulic doors to attach at each end of a new 100-foot by 140-foot crop spraying steel hangar built by Leimbach Construction of Fort Pierre, S.D. Openings at both ends of the new agricultural
hangar makes loading and taxiing in and out a real timesaver – the hangar allows crews to load two planes at the same time. “We appreciate the efficiency the doors give us,” says Craig Bair, director of the Agtegra Aerial business. “Driving planes through the hangar beats turning them around and loading outside. We have one quick-fueling system with two loading hoses. Everything remains inside, away from the elements and properly secure.” The Schweiss hydraulic doors are not centered on the endwalls. “We set them over about 8-10 feet in that big building,” Bair says. “That gave us way more loading storage room on one side. Because we have bulk chemicals in the hangar, that also allows us to drive semis in and out.” Bair, like many pilots, is not new to Schweiss Doors products and appreciates the simplicity of the company’s hydraulic one-piece style of door because there are fewer moving parts. “The Schweiss hydraulic doors are trouble-free, ➤

Agricultural Aviation Progress in Russia Spurs T-500 Development
T
he Council of the Russian Federation has announced a round-table discussion with representatives of the Federal Executive, the states, the scientific community, agriculture aviation operators, farmers and other members to discuss agricultural aviation legislation in Russia. The goal is to remove inconsistencies in current activities to better develop the industry. According to Russia’s Agricultural Development Assistance Fund, which initiated the meeting, agricultural aviation is essential for the plan to increase the country’s agricultural productivity by up to 4.5% next year. The meeting will also have members of the Duma (legislative body) and the expectation is

that a clearer, more rational and consistent rule of agricultural aviation will facilitate the life of those who work with good practices and discourage clandestinity. According to the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, the country has about 240 registered agricultural aircraft and at least as many more aircraft operating without accurate registration. However, the legislation of the Slavic country itself opens up loopholes. For example, anyone who is a pilot may buy an aircraft (including ultralights) and offer services directly to farmers without any legality. The need to plan with industry development authorities came to fruition in May 2018 at the 1st Russian Conference on Agricultural Aviation Development - held at the Helicopter Industry

RusAvia orders 10 T-500s for 2019
Expo (HeliRussia 2018). At the time, one of the concerns voiced at the event was that currently no aviation schools in Russia offer agricultural pilot courses. Russian authorities rushed to resolve issues with the agricultural aviation sector primarily because of the 50% increase in grain exports in 2018 compared to 2017. Although, Russia still purchases soybeans from Brazil. In 2016, Russia overtook the United States in wheat exports and last year became the largest exporter of cereals in the world, after ousting the European Community (including selling to Brazil). Not bad, considering that in 2010 the Russians had lost 50% of their production capacity in the previous 20 years. Now in Russia agricultural aviation is considered essential for the next phases of development in the agriculture. Incidentally, in 2017 at the MAKS 2017 Airshow in Moscow, the companies A.G. Romashin and MVEN presented the project of the T-500, the first agricultural aircraft designed and certified (August 2018) in modern Russia. This is the first step to replace the aging and obsolete Antonov AN-2, still the bulk of the legal agricultural aviation fleet in the country. Federal Air Transport Agency of Russia granted the type certificate to the T-500 for agricultural flights on September 6, 2018, becoming the first certified aircraft specifically for agricultural use. The T-500 certification program started in August, 2017, after the signing of the agreement between MVEN Company (the Republic of Tatarstan), the aircraft designer, and the Aviation Register of Russia within the framework of the International Aviation and Space Salon MAKS-2017. ➤
ORPE Technologiya, a part of the holding company RT-Chemcomposite of the Rostec State Corporation, is leading the T-500 project as the manufacturer of the T-500 composite airframe structure and glazing. The designer of the aircraft is MVEN Company. Executive Director of LLC Aeropraktika (the subsidiary enterprise of ORPE Technologiya) Mikhail Udalov and Director General of Russian Aviation Co. Ltd (RusAvia Ltd) (the Republic of Bashkortostan) Dmitry Toropov signed a supply agreement in the presence of Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov for the delivery of 10 T-500 aircraft by October 2019. According to the agreement, Aeropraktika is to supply to RusAvia the first 10 production aircraft T-500 manufactured by ORPE Technologiya. The amount of the contract is more than 200 million rubles ($3,040,500 USD). The aviation company RusAvia will become the leading operator of the aircraft, which obtained the type certificate within the framework of HYDROAVIASALON-2018. “The aircraft are to be used in carrying-out of aerial application work in the territory of the Russian Federation. The Republic of Tatarstan and the Republic of Bashkortostan will be the first regions to utilize the aircraft. Ufa Airport is to become the aircrafts’ base,” stated Dmitry Toropov, Director General of RusAvia. “The project has great potential for further development since the T-500 is a universal aircraft. We have already presented a modification of the T-500 aircraft with floatation landing gear within the framework of HYDROAVIASALON.. At present, in cooperation with the designer we are working on developing a two-seater training version of the aircraft”, said Andrei Silkin, Director General of ORPE Technologiya.

The T-500 is a new-generation aircraft for agricultural work. The aircraft has a composite airframe and can be operated in various environmental conditions. The T-500 is equipped with a high-speed parachute system making it possible to provide the rescue of both the aircraft and its pilot. The vehicle can be useful in the monitoring of the environment (especially in the fire season), inspection of large industrial facilities, weather control, forest pest control and oil spill response. According to ORPE Technologiya, the aircraft can treat up to 150 ha (370 acres) per hour. Its hopper is reported to hold 440 kg (970 pounds). In September 2018, the aircraft was introduced with flotation landing gear replacing its conventional landing gear. Having successfully passed a full range of tests, the T-500 confirmed its claimed performance. In the course of flight and ground tests, two experimental versions of the aircraft were used. The application of state-of-the-art basic polymer composite structures were used in the T-500 aircraft. This process was done by ORPE Technologiya named after A.G. Romashin, a part of the State Corporation Rostec (the holding

Defending the Aerial Applicator - What can be done for the Future? by Alan McCracken —mccracken.alan@gmail.com
I consider that we are at a threshold with the aerial application business worldwide and would like to highlight some key issues and propose solutions. A 22 | agairupdate.com

We need to better understand why does a farmer hire an aerial applicator? The farmer expects a quality application at an acceptable price and if the quality is unacceptable or the price too high, he will seriously consider an alternative option. This may be to hire a helicopter instead of a fixed wing or to invest in a ground rig. Unfortunately, this is happening in some areas and the case is being made worse by uninformed agronomists who insist on using high volumes of water with the erroneous argument of improved coverage. When challenged, the answer is that the label specifies more water for better coverage.
Public awareness perceived and real. Modern turbine aircraft in general are too big and too fast to spray many small fields in USA and farmers complain that the aircraft was only in level flight for about 30-40% or less of the spray run. Higher flying speeds with the more powerful engines mean increased risk of droplet shear and an increase in spray drift.
Spray volumes and product labels: I suggest to combine forces within the industry to implement field studies immediately to demonstrate that low spray volumes are more effective than high volumes as has been proven in South America for over 30 years. Next, establish an application volume maximum of 1 GPA (10 liters/ha) which is more than adequate for coverage of all commercial crops. In this way a 400-gallon aircraft could be cost effective and the farmer would get a higher quality application with better coverage and improved disease control. This has been proven on millions of acres for many years in South America with over 2000 ag-aircraft in operation in Brazil that exported 80 million tons of soybeans in 2018. It is my view, U.S. farmers, chemical suppliers, NAAA and other organizations should develop a more aggressive position to protect and develop U.S. agriculture aviation. During the recent NAAA conference, I visited several chemical companies and asked why they were participating in the conference. The answers were unanimous, “the aerial application industry is very important to their business and they all supported the operators.� When I asked what type of support, the answer was that they paid compensation to an applicator or farmer if a product did not work as expected provided the applicator had followed the label. more productive to provide technical support to avoid problems since many labels provide false information. These groups should campaign for label changes to maintain ag-aviation in a competitive position in the world market and resist being dictated to by groups who do not understand agriculture and even less, ag-aviation.
Operating costs for a new turbine aircraft are so high that difficult to be price competitive with ground rigs. [Reference the presentation by Dave Eby at the NAAA] Most pilots agree that the current range of modern ag -aircraft using highly efficient turbine engines offer high performance and more acres per hour with much greater reliability and longer life than the older piston engines. However with the very high volumes and the high cost of the aircraft, it is challenging to provide service to the farmer at a competitive price. These aircraft are ideally suited for insecticide and fungicide applications on many of the very large farms in South America, including many of my clients where the average field size is often A 24 | agairupdate.com
1,000 acres or more. Not only that, the crops are planted such that the aircraft often spray many fields together enabling spray runs of 4-25 kilometers (2.5 - 15 miles). These long spray runs combined with low spray volumes of 5-10 liters/hectare (0.5 – 1.0 GPA) result in very high productivity of 400- 600 hectares/hour (10001500 acres/hour) with excellent results and economic return for the operation (See photo attached of aircraft that sprayed 750,000 acres within one year in Brazil). A significant and growing number of larger farms in Brazil have sold their ground sprayers and now rely on modern turbine powered agplanes for 100% of their chemical applications. Another very positive note is some of the larger farms have sold their own aircraft and signed contracts with established applicators. This is because they have realized that aircraft can be managed more efficiently by pilots.
The drift issue: It is a worldwide issue when a product is deposited outside the target area. Farmers and environmentalists are becoming increasingly

concerned about spray drift; for example, the current dicamba issue and now the introduction of a new 2,4-D formulation. In many areas in the U.S., farmers are requesting helicopters, or ground rigs and even drones searching for an alternative application method over fixed wing with a reduced risk of drift. The conventional wisdom to reduce drift is to increase the spray volume and the use of very large droplets. Based on my experience, this is the wrong approach repeating the same old mistakes expecting a better result. We need to control droplet evaporation by reducing the amount of water and the use of equipment changes and additives to assist in the reduction of fine droplets. Very high volumes of water is creating another serious issue of soil contamination and most likely ground water, due to product “run-off” from the crop to the ground.
What type of aircraft produces the least risk of drift? Obviously, a slow flying aircraft that produces less turbulence produces the least risk for drift. Many ag-pilots learned to fly in a Super Cub, Pawnee or a Cessna 180 with a belly tank and most agree the lighter, slower aircraft produce a low risk for spray drift. Many years ago in 1973 in Hungary, I had to deal with drift of paraquat for 50 miles that was sprayed during an inversion. I shortened the boom and dropped it lower and that made a dramatic reduction in drift. During the recent NAAA meeting in Reno, I was fortunate to meet with several veteran ag pilots who recalled the times they trained in Piper Cubs with belly tanks and all agreed that drift was minimal. It has also been well documented that spray drift in Australia was seldom an issue until 1999, coincidentally with an increase in the aerial application on cotton and the introduction of the faster turbine aircraft that resulted in off-target drift of endosulfan onto pastures. This incident resulted in beef being contaminated and rejected by European authorities.

I proposed to Leland that he should design an aircraft with low wings that could be adjusted in flight like the F-14, fitted with adjustable STOL leading edge to enable a fast ferry flight to the field and then to fly slow for spraying! He was amused and told me that it probably wouldn’t fly too good. However I remain convinced that if we could have a new slower aircraft can change the labels to move back to lower volumes that there is an enormous future for a mid-sized aircraft.
Suggested specifications: •
Aircraft speed: Ferry speed 140-150 MPH with spraying speed of 100-110 MPH. • Longer wings specially designed to enable slow flight with a wide swath of 90-100 ft. • Capacity: 400 gallons • Safety: Incorporate a cockpit similar to current designs in terms of instrumentation and comfort since the pilot will be in the air longer spraying lower volumes. • Power plant: A turbine for reliability. • Spray boom designed to facilitate fast clean out and calibration tests at end of each spray period. I would be delighted to assist in any program to advance these label changes. For those who don’t know, I heavily involved with trails programs for fungicides for two leading chemical companies in the USA that led to label changes from 5 GPA to 2 GPA.
What type of aircraft would be ideal? I had the honor of knowing Leland Snow and always met with him at the NAAA meetings. Just two months prior to his passing, we had lunch together and I suggested that he still had to design one more aircraft! 2018 New Zealand Agricultural Aviation Safety Update Activity Agricultural aeroplane operators reported a total 86,805 tonnes of product in the third quarter of 2018, while helicopters reported 52,673 tonnes. The proportion of overall tonnes spread by helicopters in quarter three

was 38%, a continuation of an ongoing trend where helicopters’ share of total product applied has been increasing over time.
Safety performance There were a total of seven agricultural aviation accidents in 2018
to date, four involving helicopters and three involving aeroplanes. The total in 2017 was nine. The agricultural aeroplance accident rate sits at 14.03 per 100,000 hours while for helicopters the rate is 6.66 per 100,000 hours.

2018 accident details January East Coast Cresco Take off accident The aircraft encountered sink just after take-off forcing the pilot to jettison the load. The environmental conditions at the time were hot humid conditions, increasing temperature during the day, a light South- Easterly tailwind and an airstrip altitude of 1200 feet ASL. The pilot realised the aircraft climb performance was not as expected so he jettisoned the load. The product being spread was Dicalcic which is known not to jettison as quickly as granular fertiliser. Consequently the aircraft’s tail-plane struck a fence post at the end of the airstrip. The pilot still had limited control and was able to circle back and land safely. The tail-plane assembly was replaced and the aircraft returned to service. The Operator has introduced several operational changes to help mitigate future re- occurrence of this type.

January East Coast 750XL Collision/strike - wire While turning during of a sowing run the aircraft struck three 50Kv power lines which penetrated the leading edge of the left wing then broke. The aircraft remained airborne and dragged approx. 70m of power lines back to the operating airstrip. On landing the wires snagged on a fence and caused the aircraft to be dragged into a drain next to the airstrip. The aircraft was substantially damaged but the pilot was not hurt. May Nelson/Marlborough AS 350 Collision/strike - tree On an operation spraying a forestry block, during a turn coming back to start another spray line the helicopter struck a tree with the main rotor blade. The strike damaged one of the blades significantly and put the aircraft out of balance. The pilot landed the helicopter on an old forestry skid site a 100m away. Cloud cover and poor light were identified as key causal factors for the pilot not identifying the tree. June Waikato GA200 Landing accident After touchdown, directional control was lost. spring securing bracket bolts had failed causing the rear spring to lose directional control of the aircraft, with the situation exacerbated by the slippery surface of the airstrip caused by dew. October Bay of Plenty AS 315 Lama Engine power loss During a forest spraying operation, taking the weight while lifting with another load, at approximately 40ft there was a loud bang from the engine, immediately followed by a loss of power. The pilot used the remaining rotor energy to reduce the rate of descent but landed heavily in the upright position. There were no injuries but the aircraft sustained some damage. November Otago AS 350 Component/system failure or malfunction Forced landing accident. While on approach to conduct a spray run, the engine failed at approximately 60 feet AGL. The engine had suffered an internal failure causing the turbine assembly to move rearwards severing the Py sense line and shutting down the engine. November Canterbury Robinson R44 Loss of control - dynamic rollover The helicopter was spraying a field, and when the pilot made a reversal turn to fly out the low RPM warning horn sounded. The pilot dumped the load and decided to make a run-on landing directly ahead. During this the skid dug into the ground and the helicopter rolled over. There were no injuries but the helicopter sustained some damage.

Air Tractor Delivers 50th AT-502XP OLNEY, TEXAS – Air Tractor recently marked the delivery of its 50th 502XP. It was oneof three 502XP airplanes delivered in early February to three Canadian aerial spraying operators. They travelled to Air Tractor’s factory to ferry the 500-gallon capacity airplanes to new homes in the western Canadian provinces. “This is certainly an important milestone for us,” said Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch. “Demand for the 502XP has steadily increased since we introduced it in 2016. That tells me we’ve built an airplane that addresses a real need in the market and is working well for 502XP owners.” Dave Lekivetz—ag pilot and owner of Lekivetz Farms— took a commercial flight from sub-zero winter weather in Saskatchewan to pick up 502XP number 50 on a breezy, springlike day in Olney. The new Air Tractor 502XP replaces an R-1340-powered AT- 301 Lekivetz has flown for 17 years. “I’ve enjoyed flying my AT-301, and want to stay with the Air Tractor brand,” Lekivetz said. Noting that other farms and houses surround his own farm, he added “The XP seemed like the logical choice for us due to its quiet operation, 500-gallon hopper, and high performance. It’s the plane I plan on retiring with.” Air Tractor’s new Canadian dealer, Dave Frisch of Portage Aircraft Specialties, facilitated the sale of the 50th 502XP. Lekivetz was pleased with Frisch’s attention to detail. “Dave has been great to deal with. in Canada. Travis Karle of Accumark Aviation, Nipawin, Saskatchewan, will take possession of 502XP number 51. The 52nd XP goes to aerial applicator Jonair Ltd. in Prairie La Portage, Manitoba. Travis Karle’s aerial spraying operations span the length of Saskatchewan with seven permanent remote bases. His fleet includes an AT-402B, AT502B and AT-504 that spray crops of wheat, oats, barley, canola, lentils and chickpeas. Karle’s new 502XP will replace the 402B. According to Karle, the Pratt & Whitney PT6A-140AG engine combined with the AT-502A airframe will make the plane a great performer. “I think the 502XP will be a rock star. All the pilots I’ve talked to who fly them say it’s an amazing machine.” The 502XP boasts 867 horsepower to haul a full load even on the hottest days. It’s a productive balance of an advanced airframe and engine providing speed, capacity, and productivity in extreme conditions. With the 502XP, operators can finish more acres in less time. During their time at Air Tractor, Lekivetz, Frisch and Dyck toured the manufacturing plant and made final preparations for their return flight to the frosty Canadian latitudes the following day. “In our off-season, we don’t do much flying,” Dyck explained. “So we’re always excited when we can get back in the air. The thought of taking off in a brand-new Air Tractor brings a whole other level of anticipation.” “It is exciting,” Hirsch said. “Every time we roll a new airplane out the factory doors for a customer is a great day.” said Hirsch.
