Distance to Make a Turn
With Google Earth® and other software, this tracking can equate into an accurate calculation that can fit a variety of scenarios.
A 6 | agairupdate.com
Recently, the National Agricultural Aviation Association composed excellent data to refute proposed setback distances from wind turbines and other tower-like structures that may be encountered by ag-pilots. The NAAA is commended for addressing this and has done a very good job of it. The Association used two methods to calculate a more appropriate setback, far more than the 500 feet proposed by a wind farm sponsor. One method was a theoretical mathematical calculation using an AT-802. The other method, which I believe provides the best possible scenario, is analyzing the GPS turn tracks of different aircraft at different phases of the application. With Google Earth® and other software, this tracking can equate into an accurate calculation that can fit a variety of scenarios. Just for kicks, in this editorial I decided to play around a little with calculating the diameter in feet of a turn at different airspeeds and bank angles. See if you can follow the math and apply it to your situation. The following is how to estimate your diameter of a turn at various airspeeds and turn rates (bank angle). Let’s use some basic rules-of-thumb that addresses this exercise. For the bank angle of a turn, there is a simple way to calculate that is readily remembered. If we deal in knots, for a standard rate two-minute turn you simply add 12 to the first number of your airspeed to find a bank angle which will result in a 3° per second standard rate turn. For example: 60 knots = 6 + 12 = 18° of bank, 90 knots = 9 + 12 = 21°, 120 knots = 12 + 12 = 24°, and so on.
For an easy, mental arithmetic rule-of-thumb to find the diameter of a standard rate two-minute turn with a no-wind condition, you simply multiply the first, or first two numbers of your airspeed by 6.4 and add a couple of zeros to obtain your turn diameter in feet. Some examples are: 90 knots = 9 x 6.4 = 5,760 feet, 100 knots = 10 x 6.4 = 64 = 6,400 feet, or 120 knots = 12 x 6.4 = 7,698 feet. To determine the diameter of a standard rate oneminute turn, use a 3.2 factor instead of 6.4. Suppose you want to make 180° turn by turning downwind initially (racetrack) with a direct 10knot crosswind and little, or no crab angle before the turn. A 3° per second turn rate equals 60 seconds (180°/3) and a 6° per second rate of turn equals 30 seconds. An air mass moving at 10 knots is about 17 feet per second. So, 60 seconds x 17 = 1,020 feet for the 3° per second rate turn to shift downwind (the higher 6° rate of turn is calculated as 30 seconds x 17 = 510 feet). Add 1,020 feet to the diameter of the 3° per second turn rate with a true airspeed of 100 knots and 22° bank angle to 6,400 feet and the aircraft will be about 7,420 feet downwind, over one nautical mile (6,070 feet). This could be an example of the distance between GPS lines with a racetrack configuration. However, on the return racetrack pass, you would be turning into the wind. Let’s see how that works out using the same angle of bank, constant airspeed and no crab angle. The diameter of the turn is 6,400 feet turning into an air mass that is moving 1,020 feet per minute equals a tighter turn diameter of 5,380 feet; a difference of 2,040 feet. That is quite a significant difference that ag pilots compensate for in their racetracking mostly with
INTERNATIONAL
angle of bank and some airspeed adjustment, depending on the load of the aircraft. This is assuming flat turns. If you factor in a crab angle during the spray run, then the turn time would be more for a downwind turn versus an into the wind turn; more degrees of turn to make because of the crab angle. Although most spray runs don’t necessarily have a significant crab angle, if it was as much as 15 degrees, then turn times would be affected by the additional time to turn the extra 15 degrees downwind versus less turn degrees into the wind. Now, you understand why turning into the wind takes less real estate than turning downwind. Of course, you already knew that, but with this arithmetic lesson you can prove it. Of course, ag-flying is not so predictable. As the load lightens, the turns are tighter and not flat. Then, there is the popular P-turn, or Procedure turn where the aircraft breaks out downwind from the spray run and turns back into the wind to complete the turn. That is a totally different calculation too complex for this article. A special thanks for the equations used in this article goes to New Zealander and AgAir Update contributing writer, Mike Feeney. Until next month, Keep Turning...

California AAA goes online Hi Bill; Just a heads up, California AAA is converting their annual convention to online CEU sessions over 4-6 weeks in the fall. The CAAA is doing weekly webinars on Zoom for CEU credits; I don’t want guys suffering from “Zoom Fatigue”. For the PAASS program on the 10th of November, we are hosting two hours before lunch and two hours after lunch. Attendees can register for all sessions or just sessions they need or are interested in. Hopefully, there will be more value from shorter sessions, rather than just mindlessly staring at a computer screen for an extended period of time. Please update the CAAA convention listing on your media to: September 28-November 10 CAAA Online CE Sessions Terry Gage/916-645-9747 terry.gage@caaa.net Take Care, Terry Gage CAAA President Hello Terry; Thank you for the information. AgAir Update will be sure to get out your message. It’ll be interesting to see how this effort works early on before the convention season gets into full swing. It makes me wonder if other conventions will do something similar. If so, it will be the strangest convention season ever! See ya (on Zoom?),—Bill

Reg Michaud Aviation continues half a century of Northern California Aerial Application Story by Graham Lavender Photos by Michael Piper

Fresh out of the Army Air Corp, Frank Michaud, Jr. recognized the need for aerial spraying and seeding in Northern California, and in 1949 Michaud Aviation was born. With a loan from his dad, Frank purchased his first airplane, a Steaman, and the rest is, as they say, history. The Stearman was short lived at Michaud Aviation and Frank made the move to the N3N. Frank, operated his N3Ns for spraying and seeding through the early 50’s before joining a group of local pilots that had pioneered aerial fire fighting in N3Ns and Stearmans. Interestingly, Northern California and Frank’s homebase of Willows is considered, by many, to be the birthplace of aerial firefighting. The N3Ns were primarily used for planting, fertilizing and spraying rice and applying sulfur dust.. In the 1960s, Frank bought his first AgCat; a standard G164 model and at one point, Frank was operating four Ag-Cats. Treating rice has always been the staple at Michaud Aviation.
However, tree crops have been vastly growing in the Sacramento Valley of California. Local pressure from growers and the increased demand for utility work saw Michaud Aviation bring helicopters into their fleet of aircraft. First a Bell 47G-5 for spraying, and then a SA315B Lama. Frank used the Lama for spraying, utility and firefighting. The helicopters complimented the Ag-Cats during this period. After one of the Ag-Cats was totaled in a crash, Frank purchased two brand new 1981 Air Tractor AT-400s. At this point Frank’s son, Reg, had begun his flying career in one of the Ag-Cats. With very little Ag-Cat time, and as a result of a medical incident with one of the pilots, Reg jumped right into the Air Tractor and never looked back. Two AT-400s, Ag-Cats and helicopters were the status quo for Michaud Aviation through the 1980s. In 1986, after the loss of one of the AT400s, the company downsized and continued on with one turbine Air Tractor, two radial ➤

Ag-Cats and their two helicopters. During the early 90s, following a heart attack, Frank lost his medical. The utility work ceased and from the early 1990s on, Frank moved to a managerial role with Reg and his brother Sandy handling the majority of the flying. In the mid 1990’s, an AT-502B was added to the Michaud Aviation fleet. After the addition of the newest Air Tractor, few changes were made to the aircraft at Michaud Aviation. However, during this time, the first GPS systems were added to the fleet. In April 2008, just short of 60 years operating Michaud Aviation, Frank passed away at the age of 82. Reg and Sandy finished out the season. Sandy relocated to Central California where he still currently flys. He also spends summers flying rice in Northern California. Reg and his wife Kelly, along with their sons, Taylor and Nathan, and daughter Mallorie, reorganized and started Regenald Michaud Aviation. Reggie’s family had all been involved with the company on the ground from a very young age. This was a natural course of action for their family. Taylor Michaud started his flying career, just like his dad, with minimal time in the Ag-Cat that the company still operated. In 2009, he moved to the AT-502B. In 2012, his brother, Nathan followed the same path with Reg, Taylor and Nathan all flying the season together. They were operating

an Ag-Cat, AT-502B and an AT-602 that they had acquired in 2010. Reg had also returned to spraying with a helicopter, adding a Bell 47 in 2009. Reg Michaud passed away in April 2013. At this time, Taylor and Nathan stepped in to run the flying service with their family from 2013-2018. During this five-year period, many fleet changes took place to accommodate the changing application landscape. A Bell UH-1B was added in 2013 for spraying and has a 400 gallon capacity. The AT-502B was involved in an accident in June of 2014. Taylor and Nathan upgraded to the AT-602, bringing the fleet to two AT-602s and two helicopters. The AT-602s met the needs of the dry applications at the time for the business. However, with a growing business and Taylor and Nathan doing all the flying, an AT-802 was added in the spring of 2017. In 2019 the brothers assumed ownership of the business and started Reg Michaud Aviation, LLC. A Bell UH-1H was also added in the fall of 2019 to meet the demands of the growing tree crops. Currently, Reg Michaud Aviation, LLC operates one AT-602, one dual-cockpit AT-802, two UH-1s and one Bell 47. One of Frank’s original G-164s is still a part of the operation, but used in a very minimal role. The aircraft make up an arsenal of tools that are only used by the two brother pilots. they may use the helicopters in the morning and transition into the airplanes that same afternoon. The spring season is spent predominately treating tree crops. Spring brings mostly fungicide on almond blooms, applied with both the airplane and helicopter. Summer applications are over Northern California rice with a typical run lasting from the middle of April until about the middle of August. Planting, fertilizing, and spraying applications can provide an average of five-six flights over the same rice fields. Walnuts, almonds and various row crops are on the agenda through the summer and early fall. Applications include insecticide applications on almonds and harvest aid and insecticide on walnuts. When bees are present or the temperature becomes prohibitive, night flying operations take place occasionally. Guidance systems on all aircraft are split between SATLOC and AgPilot X systems. The brothers like what each unit is capable of and appreciate the mix of the systems. The Air Tractors are equipped with Transland CP-11TT

nozzles, but the helicopters have been outfitted for extremely high-volume applications using disc and core nozzles. Soaked rice is planted at an average of 150 to 200 pounds per acre, with fertilizer applied at 100 to 350 pounds per acre. The brothers have utilized hydraulic gates and high volume Transland spreaders for their dry applications. The operations are supported 100% by nurse trucks and dry operations are predominantly done from remote dirt and gravel airstrips. Due to the Michaud’s location in Northern California, flying operations go on 12 months out of the year. Taylor and his wife, Ashley, have a six-year old boy, three-year old girl and one-year-old twins (a boy and a girl). Nathan and his wife Monica have a four-year-old girl and an almost two-year-old daughter. The Michauds have kept their grandfather and father’s ag aviation vision alive, growing the business and operating just as they had done before them, progressing with the times and laying the groundwork for the next generation.

SINDAG Hosts 2020 Virtual Convention SINDAG, the association that represents the agricultural aviation industry in Brazil, was forced to move their annual in-person convention and exposition to a virtual presentation due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Traditionally, the SINDAG convention is the second largest agricultural aviation gathering in the world, behind the National Agricultural Aviation’s Ag Aviation Expo. This year’s event was scheduled to take place in Sertãozinho, a city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil and in conjunction with the Mercosur. The convention has been rescheduled for 2021 at the same location and includes the Mersosur congress that it partners with in Brazil every three years. This year’s virtual event spanned a two-month A 18 | agairupdate.com
period and had approximately 16,000 pageviews with 450 participants. There were 25 lectures showcasing about 30 industry products. “These numbers demonstrate an engagement that you would never have imagined achieving in a virtual event held over the Internet,” said Thiago Magalhães Silva, President of the National Union of Agricultural Aviation Companies (SINDAG) in the closing address of the virtual convention held July 30. In addition to Brazilian viewership, the event

drew a virtual audience from other countries; Paraguay, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, Portugal and the United States. The success of the event could possibly lead to online activities during the event next year to be held on July 20-22, 2021 in Sertãozinho. For Magalhães, it also shows the breadth of agricultural aviation. “The digital world is here to stay and is helping us in the mission of bringing information on agricultural aviation to the general public, as well as bringing knowledge to aviation and field personnel,” he stated. From the executive director of SINDAG, Gabriel Colle, it is too early to say how SINDAG will incorporate the virtual segment into next year’s event, “But, the possibilities are open.” Among them, interaction with some authorities and researchers from other countries, speaking or participating in a round table, or opening interaction with audiences from afar. According to SINDAG’s events coordinator, Marília Güenter, what is certain is, in practice, the event never stops. At least not for long. “In this second semester, we will have virtual events preparing for Congress 2021”. Guenter stated further the av-ag congress has not lost momentum due to the pandemic. On the contrary: it continues with the expectation the 2021 event will see a record number of participants and visitors at the Zanini

Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch offered closing remarks from his office in Olney, Texas. “It was a great job, in a time of difficulties where many people would find it impossible to have the success that was achieved.” On the part of the CSA - Centro de Serviços Aeronáuticos, based in Goiânia, the technical director Geraldo Azevedo stressed the importance achieved by the round table event’s virtual presentations. “It was very worthwhile for CSA to participate. We relay a great amount of important information for the ag-av operators and we thank SINDAG for this opportunity.” Among the additions to event schedules that came with the virtual event was the Flapinho Medal, Amiguinho da Aviação Agrícola, specifically targeted at the next generation of agricultural aviators. The medal, inspired by the main character of Revista Flapinho (a cartoon character), was awarded to the best video made by children up to 10 years old. The subject was discussing an aspect of agricultural aviation showing other

children, and even adults, the importance of the industry. The winner was Sophia Maia Bordinhão. The five-yearold daughter of an agricultural pilot from Comodoro, Mato Grosso, Brazil. She and five other participants highlighted the importance of agricultural aviation for food that everyone has at home, including the cotton in their clothes and the protection of forests against fires. Directly from Sertãozinho, the Municipal Secretary for Economic Development, Paulo Gallo spoke at the end of the event. Looking forward to next year’s av-ag congress, he pointed out the community’s engagement will be higher than in 2019 when the event was held in Sertãozinho. “We were happy to host the congress last year. We are even more excited to also host the event in 2021 during the centenary of agricultural aviation.” Gallo reiterated that the event has become part of the official calendar of events in Sertãozinho. Discussions of the 2021 event have already begun with local business entities and the Municipal Councils of Tourism.

Psychological Disorders at Work
Bullying is an extreme form of psychological violence in the workplace.
A 22 | agairupdate.com
Intense working hours, over eight hours, are no longer new in companies, regardless of the size or the segment in which they operate. As the hierarchical level increases, the situation worsens: some managers expect subordinates to be available 24 hours a day and to put their careers above all in their lives. The reaction to that couldn’t be worse. A person who was not aggressive, for example, because of pressure in the work environment, can start to react in this way. As a result, personal relationships, and even at work, start to get worse. The improvements in technology, instead of providing more time for modern man, ended up making him more competitive. To stay in the market, you have to do more, with less! Pressure at work generates anxiety, which is the major culprit for taking away a person’s physical and mental well-being. This characteristic, as simple as it may seem, acts directly on the quality of life of people, causing presenteeism (employees who are not fully functioning in the workplace because of an illness, injury or other condition) in the relationship with family and friends. Many people give themselves up to companies, make personal sacrifices and some even stop a normal lifestyle, postponing such things as marriage and having children. It is necessary to be attentive to this, so the individual can recognize his limits and establish a pace that satisfactorily meets different demands. Bullying is an extreme form of psychological violence in the workplace. It refers to psychological aggressions that are repeated and persist over time, aimed at excluding workers from the work environment. It is configured by
repetitive behaviors of isolation and humiliation. The International Labor Organization (ILO) describes bullying as the behavior of someone to demean a person or group of workers, through vengeful, cruel, malicious or humiliating means against a person or group of workers. Repetitive criticisms and disqualifications, isolating the worker from contact with other workers and spreading false information about him/her. Marie-France, a French psychiatrist, systematized some behaviors, which due to their repetition, association and intentionality, would be characterized as moral harassment. All the behaviors listed above can be considered acts of psychological aggression, even if they do not occur repeatedly or intentionally. Not every situation of violence or psychological aggression at work is technically bullying. Repetition and intentionality are the elements that characterize moral harassment and differentiate it from specific psychological attacks and conflicts in interpersonal relationships. The most frequent psychological violent behaviors are related to: exaggerated pressure to meet goals, constant and strict supervision, use of embarrassing results exposure strategies and comparison between members of the same group, competitiveness beyond ethics, performance evaluation based only on results, the threat of constant dismissal, humiliations directed at a group of workers in the face of less than expected results, among others. Moral harassment is not a new phenomenon, but the new work configurations creates organizational environments conducive to the occurrence of situations of minor and extreme ➤

psychological violence at work: neoliberal politics, productive restructuring, precarious work, structural unemployment, new forms of job management and certain people, for example. Although more frequent than bullying, minor psychological violent behaviors are often perceived in a context of “trivialization of social injustice” Asked if people can find a link between these psychological effects (anxiety, aggression, depression, irritability) to the massacring people, this happens only when they see that they have no more time to live their own lives. This perception, however, is slow to present itself, due to the difficulty of many disconnecting from work. One way to get rid of pressure at work is to manage negative and catastrophic thoughts. Many people spend energy worried about the problems they have, instead of looking for alternative solutions. This raises daily tensions and prevents a negative view about many problems. It is part of human nature to go through difficulties, but the important thing is to minimize
its effects while developing an optimistic posture is the key to dealing with pressure. In addition, another fundamental attitude is to look for ways to maintain balance in the various human dimensions (physical, emotional, social, spiritual). Meditation techniques, physical activity and the practice of a religion can be alternatives. Relieving psychological problems, physical problems are also mitigated. Pressure at work can manifest itself through emotional, physical or mixed symptoms. Some diseases that are related to this are: those of the digestive system, cancer, coronary heart disease, sleep disorders, among others”. According to research, 53% of illnesses are caused by an unhealthy lifestyle and could be prevented; 20% are due to environmental factors; 17% are due to a genetic tendency and only 10% are linked to the lack of medical assistance. So, face the pressure at work in a positive way. Your mind and body thank you!

REGINA’S PERSPECTIVE
Regina Farmer regina.farmer@chem-man.com
Convention Season in a Pandemic With the convention season upon us and the uncertain fate of the pandemic, I started thinking about a convention backup plan for our industry. Knowing that our states and national associations still need the support of their vendors and our pilots needing to receive their CE credits, what could we do if an in person gathering were not allowed and/or not feasible? I recently attended a Zoom board meeting with members of the California Agricultural Aircraft Association to talk about some ideas. Terry Gage, President of the association, talked with me further to discuss their plans. In reviewing the situation in California, Terry stated there are no facilities that could host groups greater than 25. Based on the recent rise in positive numbers of virus cases, they decided to transition their November convention to “Fall CE A 26 | agairupdate.com
programs” spread out over 4-6 weeks via Zoom webinars approximately two hours each. The PAASS program will also be via Zoom meetings. She’s been monitoring the situation on what other associations have been doing to address the pandemic restrictions, noting that across the nation large and small associations were converting to some type of online format. “We’re going to keep it simple with CE and PAASS and create some levels of sponsorship opportunities
INTERNATIONAL
that would acknowledge those that supported the program. Terry said they did a survey and half of the exhibitors could not commit to attending. However 90% of the members wanted to meet in person and 95% said they would try Zoom if it was the only thing offered. Their continuing education requirements are based on a two-year rotating basis. She said her highest priority was to make sure that the CE credits were available for members to renew their licenses. I asked her the cost of the vendor sponsorship and they decided to keep it the same amount. She wasn’t sure if they were considering door prizes at this time due to shipping costs, etc. She said “There’s a lot of communication that’s going to have to happen. We’ll have to change our publication to go out in time.” The new “Fall CE program” is still a work in progress hopefully starting on Sept. 29th. (For more details go to CAAA.net or email Terry directly @ terry.gage@caaa.net.) I also talked to Sandy Wells with the Oklahoma Agricultural Aviation Association. She stated that they are currently looking for a place to hold their in-person convention. The restrictions in their state were not mandated by the state but by the city and she is currently planning on having the convention at this time.
Lindsay Barber with the National Agricultural Aviation Association also stated that their current plans were to still hold an in-person gathering in Savannah, Georgia but were still considering the option of a virtual convention, if necessary. In order to help our associations (whether they have an in-person gathering or not), our company (Chem-Man by DataSmart) decided to help by having a common website that could help direct users to state and national links to their contact information. Within each state and national link, there will be a directory of vendor sponsors. The vendors can send optional videos about the latest things going on in their company. The website will be called “agavationconnect.com” and is a work in progress. There’s no doubt about it, an in-person gathering is definitely the preferred method of holding a convention. Not only do you get to talk to your customers directly, but it’s kind of like a family reunion seeing everyone and catching up on the latest. Socializing is what we do! However, I’m a hard believer in having a backup plan. Let’s all hope this pandemic is behind us soon and look forward to a safe and prosperous year!

Pilots and the Ground Crew by Jonathan Teigrob Winkler, Manitoba Canada
Recollections: The healthy green of the banana plantation stretched out beyond the upper jugs of the Ag-Cat’s R-985 Pratt and Whitney radial engine. There was a white spot waving on each end of the sea of green. I lined up the centre of the number one jug with the two white spots. As the Ag-Cat came close to the first white spot, it disappeared into the plantation. My day began at 4:30 am at the mixing station. The Growers Association for the bananas had established a group, Sigatoka Control, whose job was to keep the sigatoka disease under control. This disease, both black and yellow sigatoka, is devastating to a banana crop. The pilot’s job was to make sure his plane was always ready to fly over the banana plantations with a variety of fungicides; mixed in oil, or an oil emulsion, or in water. Sigatoka Control ground guys were always ready to clean the windshield and nozzles, They would ask how the flaggers were performing and call the flagmen supervisor if anything needed changing. They were a fine group of fellows. One of the prettier gender came around once in a while, but she was usually stationed in the office. However, we did manage to go sailing and fishing together a few times with my 23-foot day sailor on days off from spraying. The other pilot was a highly experienced and respected crop duster originally from the U.S. He was also great to be around, sharing many interesting and vital experiences. His religious belief required that he take Saturdays off. I mentioned to Sigatoka Control that maybe I could take Sundays off. Nope! That wasn’t a problem, since I wasn’t sure which day I needed off for my “beliefs”. A 28 | agairupdate.com
The flying was in the morning and never went past 11 am. We would fly high enough so downwash wouldn’t be a factor and the spray material would settle slowly. The theory was to target with the spray the newest leaf being formed, which was more or less vertical. I flew with the left door open or removed so as to be able to wipe off the various fungicides from the windscreen while in flight. The plantations were close to the sea. So, we had a gentle land breeze in the early morning, then a sea breeze as the land warms faster than the sea. Because of this, it wasn’t possible to have flagmen moving upwind all the time. Some days, the planes would be coated with spray, but since the spray materials were usually mixed with oil, it kept the Ag-Cats corrosion free.
With this new digital tool, I could race track, back and forth, change to the other side of the field, or skip a few passes every time and still do a better job. As a pilot, there was quite a lot of chemical being absorbed through the skin and inhaled while flying. There was a bit of skin rash, which wasn’t unpleasant for myself and the other pilot. When someone would ask about the effects of the pesticides we were using, my thoughts were that we pilots absorbed
about 5000 times the amount of the average person and it didn’t affect us seriously (the number came out of a hat with my personal exaggeration added). After 10 years of this type of flying, it was a welcome break to temporarily retire. I took time to swim in the Caribbean or Pacific, have a “cafe con leche” (coffee with milk) every morning and enjoy the carefree hospitality and delicious cooking of the Hispanic or Creole people of Central America. After returning to flying after a few years off, instead of two white spots in the field to line up on, there were flashing, digital lights mounted in front of the R-985 that was now on a Weatherly. The days of flying through chemicals were about over. With this new digital tool, I could race track, back and forth, change to the other side of the field, or skip a few passes every time and still do a better job. Eventually, the company owner exchanged the Weatherlys for Pratt and Whitney equipped turbo props, outfitted with air conditioning and probably a cabin air filter somewhere. However, when I was once asked which of the digital guidance systems I liked best, I probably looked at him blankly. Back in the day of human flaggers in the banana plantations, if one flagger wasn’t doing his job correctly, the managers would try to get him to do it right or have someone else do the job. I never thought of liking one flagman better than the other! Now, after a day of ag-flying, I tap the TURN OFF button on the flagman, an icon spins around in circles for a while, then it’s gone. Using the magnetic compass, I pick some spot in the distance to fly to that I know will take me back to the home base airstrip. Times sure have changed!

Procedures for a Healthy & Safe Ag Aviation Expo The well-being of attendees and exhibitors has always been an underlying objective of the Ag Aviation Expo but having clear health and safety protocols takes on heightened importance in the age of COVID-19. NAAA is diligently working on plans to help with social distancing throughout its convention because it is required by the state of Georgia and the city of Savannah to proceed with the Ag Aviation Expo. A few of the procedures NAAA is considering implementing include: • Creating 6 feet of space between people in the registration line. Staff will be wearing masks at the registration desk and will wipe down the desk in between each
person. To reduce the amount of on-site registration, NAAA strongly encourages attendees to register online or over the phone this year. Attendee registration is open at AgAviation.org/ conventionregistration. • In lieu of handshakes, foot bumps or elbow bumps are encouraged. • Creating a physical distancing flow on the trade show floor with arrows and distance marker stickers. • Depending on the availability of products, NAAA will have PPE stations on the floor and in the registration area that will house hand sanitizer, hand gloves and face masks. • In the meeting rooms, some chairs will be placed closer together for people who have traveled together. Other chairs will be distanced farther apart for attendees who want to socially distance. • Implementing changes with the food and beverages at NAAA’s receptions, banquets and coffee breaks so that multiple people are not touching banquet station handles. Furthermore, attendees are encouraged to travel with and wear face masks and to take liberal advantage of hand sanitizer. Most airlines are requiring face masks on flights. As of this writing, Savannah is requiring face masks in public as well. While not everyone may agree with these precautions, NAAA has a responsibility to you, the facilities and the city of Savannah to show what policies it has in place to make sure risks are mitigated as much as possible from the spread of COVID-19. The association also owes it to its staff, attendees, exhibitors and the citizens of Savannah to do what it can to promote a healthy and safe annual convention. See you in Savannah!

Reporting Drones The FSDO office in Little Rock, Arkansas has received several reports of aerial applicators seeing drones close to their flight path. The FAA is asking ag-operators to please continue to make those reports. An NMAC (Near Mid Air Collision) is an incident associated with the operation of an aircraft in which a possibility of a collision occurs as a result of proximity of less than 500 feet to another aircraft, or a report is received from a pilot or flight crew member stating that a collision hazard existed between two or more aircraft. A drone is considered an aircraft. The primary purpose of the NMAC Reporting Program is to provide information for use in enhancing the safety and efficiency of the National Airspace System. Data obtained from NMAC reports are used by the FAA to improve the quality of FAA services to users and to develop programs, policies and procedures aimed at the reduction of NMAC occurrences. All NMAC reports are thoroughly investigated by Flight Standards Facilities in coordination with Air Traffic Facilities. Data from these investigations are transmitted to FAA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., where they are compiled and analyzed and where safety programs and recommendations are developed. Pilots involved in NMAC occurrences are urged to report each incident immediately by radio or telephone to the nearest FAA ATC facility or FSS. Or, in writing, in lieu of the above, to B 6 | agairupdate.com
the nearest Flight Standards District Office (FSDO). Per the faa.gov website, the report should include the following: • Date and time (UTC) of incident, location of incident and altitude. • Identification and type of reporting aircraft, aircrew destination, name and home base of pilot. • Identification and type of other aircraft, aircrew destination, name and home base of pilot. • Type of flight plans; station altimeter setting used. • Detailed weather conditions at altitude or flight level. • Approximate courses of both aircraft: indicate if one or both aircraft were climbing or descending. • Reported separation in distance at first sighting, proximity at closest point horizontally and vertically, length of time in sight prior to evasive action. • Degree of evasive action taken, if any (from both aircraft, if possible). • Injuries, if any. FSDO FAASTeams have specialized teams that are currently making a plan to help educate drone operators about the hazard(s) that they could be creating when operating in the national airspace system.

Passing the Stress Test
Keep the Dark Side of Stress at Bay Human beings are amazingly diverse, but the discipline of human factors tells us that we have certain “factors of humans” in common. These include cognitive functions such as attention, detection, perception, memory, judgment/ reasoning, and decision making. Such factors play a role in how we react, both physically and psychologically, with respect to a given environment, product, or experience. When one or more of these encounters poses a challenge or demand, the universal human reaction involves some level of emotional or physical tension that we call “stress.” For that reason and a few more presented below, I tend to characterize stress as the ultimate human factor.
The Two Faces of Stress The four “As” of stress management are: Avoid, Alter, Adapt, or Accept.
B 8 | agairupdate.com
According to Roman mythology, Janus was the god of duality, among other things. The Greek comedy and tragedy faces used to symbolize theatre are sometimes called Janus masks, presumably for this reason. Like Janus, stress is a creature of duality. Depending on the situation, the person, and even minute things like the time of day, stress can motivate, or it can debilitate. It can stimulate a helpful hyper-focus, a harmful fixation, or an equally dangerous lack of focus. It can be positive when it pushes a person to positive activities or outcomes. On the flip side, it can be negative when it causes anger, frustration, or high tension. Another duality is that stress can take two forms. You “host” the acute version when, for example, you quickly maneuver to avoid conflicting traffic or find yourself in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) on a VFR flight. Acute stress leapt into my life on several memorable occasions, including the first time I got
holding instructions while flying single-pilot IFR in no-kidding solid IMC. Handled properly — more on that in a moment — acute stress can help you safely navigate potentially dangerous situations. Chronic stress is a peskier and more insidious visitor — kind of like a lingering houseguest who eats all your food, ransacks your belongings, and occupies all your favorite spots. Just as with the overstaying houseguest, chronic stress may leave you seething in silence, trying to pretend all is well. Meanwhile, your blood pressure soars, you sleep poorly, and you feel like you are carrying lead weights. Unmanaged, chronic stress can do permanent damage. Having been there and done that, I cannot overemphasize the importance of promptly recognizing and dealing with chronic stress. Needless to say, the dark side of stress doesn’t play nicely on the flight deck if you are the pilot of an aircraft, or in the maintenance hangar if your job is fixing flying machines. But managing stress is just as important for your overall quality of life.
Identify — Friend or Foe? You have probably heard the term IFF, the abbreviation for Identification Friend or Foe. Briefly, IFF is an identification system that lets military and civilian ATC interrogation systems identify aircraft, vehicles, or forces as friendly. It also determines bearing and range from the interrogator. In order to manage stress so as to get the benefits of its better half while keeping its dark side at bay, you need to develop an internal IFF system to help you spot signs of stress. See figure 1 for a few things to look for.

Because it’s easy to remember, an article on the four As of managing stress resonated strongly with me and could be helpful to you as well. The four As of stress management are: Avoid, Alter, Adapt, or Accept. Avoid sources of stress. Say “no” to taking on more than you can handle, whether in personal or professional situations. Limit the time you spend with people who cause stress in your life. Stop doing things that make you tense. Alter the situation. Create a balanced schedule. Be willing to compromise. to reframe problems (e.g., a mistake is an opportunity to learn; bad weather offers time to refresh aviation knowledge). Put issues in perspective (e.g., will I remember this a month from now?). Set reasonable standards. Practice an attitude of gratitude. Accept what you can’t change. Focus on what you can do, and don’t obsess about things you can’t control. Frame challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. Let go of anger and resentments. Confide in a trusted friend, family member, colleague, or professional.
This Too Shall Pass! Even normal life offers myriad daily opportunities to practice stress management. At the time of this writing, though, the pandemic coronavirus health emergency continues to disrupt virtually every aspect of what we knew as “normal life.” I find it can be a challenge to manage stress in this utterly unprecedented time, and perhaps that is true for you as well. Let’s jointly resolve to put the four As of stress management into daily use, and remember that this too shall pass. Susan K. Parson (susan.parson@faa.gov) is editor of FAA Safety Briefing and a Special Assistant in the FAA’s Flight Standards Service. She is a general aviation pilot and flight instructor.

The Equipment and People — Chapter Two continued…
Effective Swaths
George Sanders of Agrinautics, Las Vegas, Nevada, running experiments in Central America, spraying oil on bananas as a fungicide, mid-1960s.
A 12 | agairupdate.com
It is interesting to note that the experimenters were not impressed with extremely low flying. They concluded that, “Good distribution of poison can be obtained while flying at heights of 5 to 25 feet above the crop, depending upon atmospheric conditions.” Wide swaths were recognized as effective and recommendations called for parallel swaths 75 to 150 feet wide, slightly overlapped. Another observation worth quoting dealt with pilots. “Only an experienced pilot can make an application that will obtain the best results,” states the writer. “He must know the instant when to shut off the flow of dust. In order to avoid leaving any untreated cotton, it is good practice, in addition to ‘zooming,’ for the pilot to make an extra flight around the edges of the field.” All of this good advice in 1929, no less! The authors of this little masterpiece were also concerned with pilot safety. They advised that the “split type” or “tripod” landing gear was a great advantage for a dusting plane. Planes equipped with axle-type gears were apt to nose over due
to cotton stalk resistance in the event of a forced landing. Gaines also “discovered” the damage being done by cotton flea hoppers at about this time. As a result, this insect came under the gun of the early dusters, along with boll weevil and boll worm. With this type early background, it is no wonder that Texas A & M continued its high interest in the ag aviation field. Such a background eventually led to the design and construction of the famous Ag-1. And through the years, many radical improvements in both solid and liquid dispensing equipment can be traced to work done at this fine school. Later, equally important work was done at Ohio State University. In 1950 its Agricultural Engineering Department initiated the most ambitious studies relating to dispensing equipment ever undertaken. The University already owned its own Stearman and, in addition, was loaned several other aircraft, including a Piper PA-11, a J-3, and possibly a Taylorcraft.
UNITED STATES
James E. Henry and the now widelyknown George Sanders headed up these rather remarkable studies. For the first time, accurate and completely scientific methods were employed in an attempt to learn just exactly what happened when the pilot opened the hopper gate. Sanders, a New York farm boy, was a natural for this job. He was virtually born with a pesticide pump in his hands. Coming from a farm with a large commercial fruit orchard as part of its holdings, George was spraying fruit trees by hand almost from infancy. Reaching the proper age, he enlisted for a hitch in the service, winding up with the paratroopers for four years. Upon discharge, he returned home to concentrate his talents on “crop dusting engineering,” reflecting his early interest in aircraft. Sanders obtained a B.S. degree in agricultural engineering and an M.S. in mechanical engineering from Ohio State and began immediately working for the University. Under the program developed by Henry and Sanders, elaborate swath-measuring systems were developed, wind tunnel studies were used, and airflow measuring devices designed and constructed. Positive displacement metering devices were built and used in controlling the flow of materials into hopper throats. Literally hundreds of tests were flown. Ingenious measuring and weighing devices were built and used for the first time, giving an accurate and ➤

truly scientific evaluation of what happened to the material upon release. Portable collect trays were designed and built that could be easily moved to take advantage of such things as wind shifts. Data began to appear that could be successfully used to develop better dispensing equipment for both solids and liquids. Prior to these experiments, most spreaders or venturis were of the original or unvaned design. But innovations were now appearing, with vanes, true airfoil construction, and other changes that made the product superior to anything yet produced. As all good duster pilots know, a competent pilot can make his material “fit the field.” But Sanders and Henry turned this thinking around by showing what could be done with a few changes in design and technique. Two very interesting and informative bulletins sprung from these Ohio State studies. They were Bulletin No. 906 by James E. Henry titled Distributors for Applying Dry Materials by Airplane and Bulletin No. 727 by George Sanders titled Equipment and Procedures for the Measurement of Deposits of Aerially Applied Materials. The work outlined in these bulletins had a far-reaching effect on the entire industry, especially in the manufacture of dispersal equipment for both solids and liquids. George Sanders later worked as research engineer for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as research engineer for Hiller Aircraft, and as president of Agricultural Aviation Engineering Company at Santa Clara, California. His time was devoted primarily to the design and construction of spray and dust system components for fixedwing and rotary-wing aircraft. He designed and built the first spray system for the Hiller UH-12E helicopter, and he is credited with numerous other “firsts” for fixed-wing craft, especially in the liquid field. One interesting facet of Sanders’ career was a scientific study of spray deposits for one of the world’s largest banana plantations in Central America. J.B. “Doc” Alder operated an extensive aircraft service in this region and the fruit growers were working their way into disease protection sprays on huge banana acreage. Sanders was called in to set up and operate a long-term study of oil spray deposits. From this study, adequate control of certain fungus diseases became possible. As a result of this work, Sanders
eventually operated his own agricultural aircraft in Central America and held his own Operators Certificate No. WE-27 AG. George Sanders is still best known for his ownership and operation of Agrinautics in Las Vegas, where he settled in 1962 and is still going strong. His firm has been responsible for the design and manufacture of perhaps the most modem dispensing equipment yet designed for aircraft. Lately, Sanders’ interest has turned to computers and he is now supplying the agricultural aviation industry with simplified units and programs that can greatly increase operational efficiency.
George Sanders is still best known for his ownership and operation of Agrinautics in Las Vegas, where he settled in 1962 and is still going strong. During the years, Sanders has been highly visible and a strong supporter of the state and national associations. He has received virtually all of the honors offered by those associations and has contributed immeasurably to their growth and success. At Mississippi State University, agricultural aviation research was carried on sporadically from the late 1920s through the 1930s. Researchers were concerned almost exclusively with the effectiveness of certain applications in the control of insects. A working arrangement existed between Mississippi State and Texas A & M. The wellknown Gaines in Texas helped supply data on aircraft insect control to Mississippi State on an exchange basis for information useful to Texas A & M. Consequently, no appreciable aircraft research developed until immediately after World War II. An arrangement has been in effect for many years between Mississippi State University and USDA’s Experiment Station at Stoneville. Directly after the War, this station was headed by William L. Giles, who later became president of Mississippi State University. The Entomology Department ➤

was run by E.W. Dunham and S.L. Calhoun. All were visionary men, with Dunham and Calhoun outstanding insect control specialists. Learning of the success of Delta operators using liquid spray systems made by Mississippi Valley Aircraft Service in 1947 and 1948, Dunham and Calhoun “conscripted” aircraft and pilots from all over the state and began season-long experiments during the 1948 growing season. Rather remarkable results were obtained. Insect control was the main concern rather than equipment improvement. The results of controlled spray programs were so dramatic that Dunham and Calhoun began recommending aircraft spraying over dusting several years before such liquid spraying was officially approved. Both 1948 and 1949 were years of unusually heavy boll weevil infestation. Conventional cotton dusts disappeared from the marketplace quickly and both farmers and flying firms were forced into using sprays. Applications of toxaphene with DDT were made on a tremendous scale throughout the South and results were so obviously superior that crop “dusting” was virtually doomed. Policy making agencies at Mississippi State adopted recommendations officially approving sprays, a move that was followed almost immediately by neighboring states. At the same time, experiments were also conducted with dry defoliants, specifically Aero Cyanamid Special Grade, commonly known as “Black Annie.” It was determined that applications from higher altitudes were superior to those made by rolling the wheels in the cotton and the Extension Department officially recommended applications from 12 to 20 feet above the crop! It was also discovered that Cyanamid applications were considerably more effective when applied in late afternoon, rather than in the morning when the crop was dew d renched. Streaking was avoided when the plants were dry and penetration was noticeably better. More extensive and more scientific aircraft and equipment evaluation came about at Mississippi State in the 1950s, when August “Gus” Raspet took charge of the school’s aviation curricula. Raspet, a pilot, was an authentic genius. He was ably assisted by Michael “Mike” Smith, a zealous young aeronautical and mechanical engineer of great talent, and by Joe Cornish, an equally
talented engineer. Mississippi State was already widely recognized in the field of glider aircraft and some of its student pilots held world glider flight records. A fine airport with shops and hangar was devoted to aviation and here Raspet, Smith, and Cornish set up a continuing program of aircraft and dispensing equipment development and evaluation. Thousands of man-hours went into experiments with wing airfoil design and wing loading. Raspet, Smith, and Cornish developed a theory known as “boundary layer” control, where thousands of pin holes were punched into lift surfaces, reshaping airflow and making possible departures from the norm in airfoil construction. These studies had a very strong bearing on the future development of modem agricultural aircraft. The Mississippi State program became so wellknown and recognized that operators and aircraft manufacturers voluntarily contributed planes and equipment to the school for study and use in its programs. Callaire in Afton, Wyoming, was one of the first major manufacturers to contribute an aircraft to the school-an A-9. During the years that this program was in operation, a unique relationship developed between agricultural flying people and University officials. Giles felt that no problem was too small for University participation. Operators could bring in their aircraft or equipment for special study almost without prior notice and be assured that Gus Raspet, Mike Smith, or Joe Cornish would set to work and help solve almost any ag flying problem. Great strides were made by operators and equipment manufacturers during the period of time when this program flourished. Both Giles and Raspet were singularly honored by the Mississippi Agricultural Aviation Association with honorary lifetime memberships, the highest award given by the association. Tragically, Gus Raspet was killed in a plane crash at the border of his own airport. The plane in which he was flying apparently stalled out in a turn as he approached the field and he was killed instantly in the ensuing crash. Mississippi State University and the agricultural flying industry had lost one of their most useful friends.

A WING AND A PRAYER
Carlin Lawrence carlin@agairupdate.com
The Sin of Worrying About Our Future
Many Christians worry about their health and are fearful of death.
B 18 | agairupdate.com
I’ve learned in my own life’s experiences that pushing through worry and fear is usually one of the best ways to handle these anxious events in our life. I’m not saying it’s easy! Worrying and fear can have paralyzing effects; especially during a life threatening sickness and serious financial problems. We all know that being fearful and worrying about all these problems usually doesn’t help much; but worrying seems to be characteristics of human nature. When certain situations cause me to worry I almost always turn to the Bible for God’s wisdom to guide me through those circumstances in my life. The Moabites, Ammonites, and others were planning a battle with Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah. Jehoshaphat was fearful so he prayed to the Lord and proclaimed a fast throughout Judah, and from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord (2 Chronicles 20:1-4). Jehoshaphat prayed, “O Lord God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and in Your hand is there not power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You?” (2 Chronicles 20:5-6). The Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel…And he said to King Jehoshaphat! “Thus says the Lord to you: ‘Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s. Tomorrow go down against them. They will surely come up by the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the brook before the Wilderness of Jeruel. You will not need to fight this battle! Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!’ Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the Lord is with you.” “Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem bowed before the Lord, worshiping the
Lord” (2 Chronicles 20:14-18). Jehoshaphat said, “Believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper” (2 Chronicles 20:20). Jehoshaphat appointed those who should sing to the Lord, and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out in front of the army and said: “Praise the Lord, for His mercy endures forever.” “When they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, and they were defeated…they destroyed one another” (2 Chronicles 20:21-23). Jesus said, “Do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them” (Matthew 6:31-32). Why should we worry about our future when God promises: “Those who know Your name trust in You, for You, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek You… For the Lord loves the just and will not forsake His faithful ones” (Psalm 9:10, 38:21). “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” (Hebrews 13:4-6). Many Christians worry about their health and are fearful of death. God said to the Hebrew people, “If you do what is right in His eyes, if you pay attention to His commands and keep all His decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you…There is no God besides Me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; nor is there any who can deliver from My hand” (Exodus 15:26, Deuteronomy 32:39). “For He wounds, but He also

binds up; He injures, but His hands also heal” (Job 5:18). Peter said, “It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through Him that has completely healed him” (Acts 3:16). God may use doctors to treat us for our illnesses, but ultimately all healing comes from God. God promises that He will work all things for every Christian’s good (Romans 8:28). We worry about our financial situation: But Jesus said, “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33). If we’ll seek God’s wisdom for our daily provisions He will provide for our necessities. The psalmist wrote, “I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his descendants begging bread” (Psalm 37:25). Solomon wrote, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). If we see someone who is in need we should help them if we can: “He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, and He will pay back what he has given” (Proverbs 19:17). “Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor will also cry himself and not be heard” (Proverbs 21:13). Many Americans worry about the USA failing or going broke; but God won’t allow that to happen until He chooses. God’s word says, “God is the Judge: He puts down one, and exalts another…The Lord is the Most High over all the earth” (Psalm 75:7, Psalm 83:18). “God removes kings and raises up kings; The Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone He wishes and sets over them the lowliest of people…The Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses…He does according to His will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand or say to Him, ‘What have You done?’” (Daniel 2:21, 4:17, 32, 35). The Bible tells us to put our faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, or perish (John 3:14-18). “Anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15). Is your name written in the Book of Life? Your choice has eternal consequences!

TWENTY YEARS AGO
Edwards Tradition from the Past by Bill Lavender
A better pair, you’ll never meet. Mark (L) and Skeet Edwards.
B 22 | agairupdate.com
LELAND, MS — It’s not written anywhere that two brothers need to be just alike. Nor is it written they should be different. Your first meeting with John “Bubba/Skeet” and Mark Edwards of Edwards Flying Service will convince you of this. Mark Edwards makes sure his part of the work gets done, while being responsible for mechanical decisions at Edwards Flying Service. Skeet is the money man, taking after his father “Big Skeet”. Although Big Skeet passed on in 1989, his influence is evident, even to this day. Like so many Mississippi Delta ag aviation operations, Edwards Flying Service has a history of tradition worth telling. Big Skeet flew left seat in B-25s during World War II. Directly after the war, in 1946, Big Skeet started flying ag for Checkers Dusters, owned by Fred Frazier. In 1947-1948, he flew with Delta Air
Lines spraying in Stearmans, working from cow pastures. After leaving Delta, Big Skeet flew for Lee Abide in Greenville, Mississippi, running the flying service and flying for 50% pilot’s pay. For the next 13 years Big Skeet worked with Mr. Abide. Then he and his wife, Lillian, formed L & S Dusters operating Piper Cubs in Leland, Mississippi. In 1965 Big Skeet took a leave of absence from ag flying, trying his hand at car sales and real estate. A turn in the economy, with interest rates rising, Big Skeet returned to ag flying. Earning a degree from Mississippi State University, paid for by spraying cotton and the GI bill, he formed Edwards Flying Service in 1969 in Leland, Mississippi, and for the next twenty years he flew ag. According to Mark, “Dad operated three Cessna Ag Trucks, and from 1969 until 1983, he owned

and traded twenty-three of them.” One of Big Skeet’s beliefs was that one’s portion of luck in life was directly proportional to his enthusiasm for hard work. When Big Skeet was running Edwards Flying Service’s Ag Trucks, the airstrip was grass, 1,800 feet long and barely 35 feet wide. Today, with both Skeet and Mark using the knowledge and experience gained from their father, Edwards Flying Service operates from a 150-foot wide and 3,500-foot long strip of which the south half is paved. Instead of Ag Trucks, two AT502s sit on the ramp, ready to begin work on 25,000 acres of cotton and 3,000 acres of rice that will be booked by the company’s 50 or so customers. Skeet and Mark didn’t just walk up to the airstrip one day, take over Big Skeet’s operations, then buy two new AT-502s. If any two young men ever worked their way into ag aviation, they are Mark and Skeet. By the age of ten, both boys were loading and working their summers at the airstrip. Their day would begin before light, stuffed in an ag plane, heading to whatever satellite strip Big Skeet was working from that day, returning home at dusk exhausted. Skeet remembers the first full summer he worked for Big Skeet, “When it was time to go back to school, Big Skeet called me into his office and gave me a 20-gauge shotgun. That was my whole pay for three months! I still have that shotgun hanging on my wall.” “The next season he paid each of us $25 a week, and we thought we were the richest kids in Leland,” Mark adds. “And of all things, the season after he raised us up to a dollar an hour, plus the $25. We didn’t think there was that much money in the world.” Like many boys growing up at “the airstrip”, Big Skeet taught both of his boys to fly as soon as they were able to see over the control stick and reach the rudder pedals. Bottom: Edwards Flying Service designed this all stainless steel loader truck with 12-inch, 30-foot long plastic auger. The auger is hydraulically driven by a hydrostatic transmission removed from a combine. The unit can be augured forward and reverse for ease of unclogging. The complete hydraulic system cost about $1200 with freshly overhauled hydraulic pump, motor and hydrostatic unit. Delivery rate is 3000 pounds per minute. A lever in the cab operates an electric-over-hydraulic solenoid that controls the hydraulic valve. The hopper holds 5,700 pounds of urea or 8,000 pounds of potash. The fuel tank holds 325 gallons of Jet-A. Cost of rig with new truck and chassis, approximately $50,000.

turned 18, they got their commercial pilot’s licenses and became full-time ag pilots. “No matter how many hours we flew during those first five years, Dad paid us a flat $500 a month,” says Skeet. “ Finally, after ten seasons in the cockpit, he grudgingly raised us to $1,000 a month.” Between the two of them, Skeet and Mark now have 44 years of ag flying experience and certainly work for more than $1,000 a month. Except for one tiny ‘incident’, where Mark let an Air Tractor get the best of him on landing, they have perfect safety records. Surely, this can be credited to Big Skeet’s influence, who often said he “never bent one bad enough that I couldn’t park it right back where I untied it from that morning.” This includes his flight time during World War II and a known five fuel exhaustions in Stearmans, each landed safely with no damage. In 1988, Edwards Flying Service made the transition from Cessna Ag Trucks to Air Tractor AT-301s. Shortly after that, in 1991, the company moved up to turbine-powered AT-402s. By 1996, it was obvious to Edwards Flying Service a bigger and more productive aircraft was needed. The company bought two AT-502s with PT6A-34AG engines that they still operate to this day. Edwards Flying Service doesn’t participate in the Southeastern Boll Weevil Eradication Program,
although the company takes care of 25,000 acres of cotton. For that work, most of the applications are 2-3 gallon insecticide applications, with five gallon per acre applications for Roundup and other herbicides. Both cotton and 3,000 acres of rice treated by the company, receive 100-200 pounds of urea per acre. About 9,000 acres of the cotton receives three 100-pound applications while all the rice receives four 100-pound applications. Cotton may also get a 100 to 250-pound application of potash in the spring. Most of the company’s customers’ stam work is done by ground machines. All glyphosate work stops when corn emerges (midApril). Skeet remarks about the glyphosate, “Those soap bubbles can get loose.” There is no doubt that Big Skeet had an influence upon Skeet and Mark Edwards. However, equally with no doubt, the Edwards brothers have taken a successful business and maintained its success by operating good equipment and making sound business decisions. If you ever stop by to visit the Edwards boys, and Mark is not off somewhere in his race car, get them to take you to Greenville to eat at Doe’s Place. You’ll be amazed and well fed! However, I must say, my treat at Doe’s Place was compliments of Lewis Flying Service of Leland, DaDa and Debbie Lewis. Why Da-Da treated the whole bunch, including friendly competitor Edwards Flying Service, I just don’t know!

NTSB REPORTS Accident Synopses
NTSB Identification: ANC20CA052 Date: May 31, 2020 Location: Unalakleet, AK Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR AT-802 Injury: None The pilot of the amphibious, scooper air tanker airplane, reported that while preforming aerial firefighting operations, he heard ground firefighters express concern over the radio about their equipment “being too close to the fire line.” In response, the pilot landed at a small lake to fill the airplane’s water hopper tank system with water to drop on the fire. During the departure from the lake, with about 3,170 pounds below the airplane’s maximum gross weight, the left float struck a “small hill” that was about 20 ft above ground level just past the departure shore. The pilot proceeded to fly the airplane to a nearby airport and made an uneventful landing. A postaccident examination of the airplane revealed substantial damage to the fuselage. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. The pilot added that, he should have decreased the size of the water load when the wind speed started to diminish. He reported he should have also jettisoned the water load earlier, at the designated go/no go point during the scoop. He further reported his eagerness to help the ground firefighters protect their gear influenced his decision to try and successfully complete the scoop.

NTSB Identification: CEN20LA234 Date: 06/17/2020 Location: Pine Bluff, AR Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR AT402 Injuries: Serious An Air Tractor AT-402 airplane was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Pine Bluff, Arkansas. The pilot was seriously injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight. According to preliminary information obtained by FAA inspectors, the airplane was applying applicant to a field and began a turn to reverse course for another pass, when a partial loss of engine power occurred. The pilot lost control of the airplane and it collided in a field. The airplane was retained for further examination.
NTSB Identification: ERA20LA220 Date: 06/18/2020 Location: Pikeville, NC Aircraft: Robinson R66 Injuries: Fatal A Robinson R66 helicopter was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Pikeville, North Carolina. The pilot was fatally injured. The helicopter was being operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight. The pilot was the owner of the agricultural company and was spraying insecticide on a corn field when the accident occurred. According to several witnesses, this was the first time the pilot had sprayed the field. Prior to the flight, the pilot met with the landowner to discuss the scope of work and any potential hazards.
Witnesses reported that prior to the application of the insecticide, the pilot performed two flyovers of the corn field. The first flyover was accomplished before the loading of the insecticide. After landing and loading, the pilot took off then performed an additional flyover before he began spraying. The helicopter was operating 3 to 5 ft above the 6-ft-tall corn during the spraying operation and was on the second pass when the accident occurred. As the helicopter flew over the field on a northerly heading, an eyewitness heard a “popping” and saw the helicopter out of control before impacting terrain and coming to rest in the northeast corner of the field adjacent to trees. The helicopter impacted with a nonenergized wire, also known as a “dove wire” that was mounted on a 40 ft pole. The wire stretched across the width (250 ft) of the corn field to the trees bordering the east side of field, perpendicular to the flight path. In addition, there was a hunting stand attached to the pole about 10 ft above the ground. The wreckage path was oriented on a heading of about 030° magnetic, and the distance from wire impact to the final wreckage location was about 275 ft. The tail rotor assembly separated about 2 ft aft of the rotating beacon light and was found in a nearby irrigation ditch. All major components of the helicopter were present at the accident site. Both main rotor blades remained attached to the hub. About 75 ft of 5/16 inch diameter braided metal wire was wrapped around the blade pitch change horns, swashplate, pitch links, rotor hub, and both rotor blades. In addition, there were tears and scuff mark damage to the blades that was consistent with contact with the wire. Cyclic and collective control continuity was confirmed. Tail rotor control continuity

NTSB Identification: CEN20LA269 Date: 07/03/2020 Location: Weldon, AR Aircraft: Air Tractor AT 602 Injuries: None An Air Tractor AT-602 airplane was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Weldon, Arkansas. The pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 137 agricultural flight. The pilot stated that he departed a private airstrip near Weldon, Arkansas, about 1650 with about 75 gallons of Jet-A fuel and a load of dry granular fertilizer. The pilot reported that the aerial-application portion of the flight was uneventful; however, as he was returning to base the airplane had a total loss of engine power about three miles from the airstrip. The pilot stated that the airplane was established in cruise flight about 400 ft above ground level when the engine “spooled down.” The pilot stated that he was unable to restore engine power by advancing the power and propeller levers to full forward and activating the fuel boost pump and ignitors. The pilot did not recall looking at the cockpit engine gauges after the loss of engine power. The pilot stated that he lost directional control of the airplane after he made a firm landing in an open field. The pilot estimated that the flight was about 10 minutes in duration. The aft fuselage sustained substantial damage when the tailwheel separated during the ground loop after landing. On July 6, 2020, before he notified the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) or Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the accident, the pilot had his aviation mechanic examine the airplane B 28 | agairupdate.com
at the accident site to begin a repair estimate. The mechanic stated that there was ample fuel in the fuel tanks and that he was able to start up and run the engine at the accident site. The mechanic noted that the engine responded to his power lever inputs, his movement of the propeller lever cycled the propeller without any anomalies, and that the engine could generate 1,500 propeller rpm. The mechanic stated that all observed engine parameters were nominal during the engine test run at the accident site. The airplane was partially disassembled and recovered from the field to a repair station for repairs and examinations. The recovery crew reported that about 56 gallons of fuel was drained from the wing tanks, and that the recovered fuel was evenly distributed between the wing fuel tanks. A FAA inspector reported that the fuel lines, fuel tank inlet screens, and fuel filters were free of any blockage, water, or significant particles. The airplane’s digital fuel management system indicated that 50.3 gallons of fuel was remaining after the postaccident engine test run at the accident site. The entire airplane was retained for additional examination and testing after multiple airframe repairs have been completed. The engine, a Pratt & Whitney PT6A-65AG had accumulated 1,521.6 hours since new. The engine had accumulated 141 hours since it was last inspected on May 1, 2020.
NTSB Identification: CEN20LA287 Date: 07/03/2020 Location: Des Arc, AR Aircraft: Air Tractor AT 602 Injuries: None An Air Tractor AT-602 was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Des Arc, Arkansas. The pilot was not injured. The airplane operated under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 as an aerial application flight. According to information provided by the pilot, after completing the aerial
application he flew to survey another field. On the second turn over the field, the engine lost power and the pilot noted that the fuel pressure was zero. He leveled the wings and turned on the fuel boost pump restoring fuel pressure and engine power. Due to the proximity of the ground, the pilot performed a forced landing to the field. During the landing, substantial damage was sustained to the left wing. The airplane was retained for further examination.
NTSB Identification: CEN20LA278 Date: 07/10/2020 Location: Springfield, CO Aircraft: GRUMMAN G164 Injuries: Fatal A Schweizer Grumman G-164B was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Springfield, Colorado. The pilot sustained fatal injuries and succumbed from his injuries on July 14, 2020. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 137 aerial application flight. The pilot was enroute to Two Buttes, Colorado to perform a low-level aerial application flight in a rural area after departing from the Springfield Municipal Airport (8V7), Springfield, Colorado. An employee who worked for the operator doing ground loading operations, reported the airplane was loaded with 48.85 gallons of AgSaver Glyphosate herbicide, 15.62 gallons of Atarrus fertilizer, and 125 gallons of Kuglar KQ-XRN fertilizer. The airplane had about 85 gallons of fuel onboard. He reported the pilot was having trouble with the “top wing tank containing the fertilizer.” The chemical would foam over onto the windshield of the airplane. The pilot had returned to the airport once already to add more de-foaming agent to the tank and had activated the circulating pump to correct the problem. A witness reported observing white smoking coming from the cockpit prior to impact, however the smoke was “granular in nature” and “looked solid.” After the accident, the pilot reported to his wife,

that while in flight, excessive foam coated the airplane’s windshield, and he was unable to see outside of the airplane. The airplane impacted a remote flat field while traveling to the southeast and a postimpact fire ensued. The airplane came to rest about 0.65 miles southeast of the departure end of runway 17 at 8V7. The airplane sustained fire damage and was fragmented from impacting terrain. A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) aviation safety inspector documented the accident site. The wreckage was recovered and transported to a secure location.
NTSB Identification: CEN20LA271 Date: 07/10/2020 Location: Dustin, OK Aircraft: Cessna T188 Injuries: Fatal A Cessna T188 was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Dustin, Oklahoma. The pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 137 aerial application flight. According to another company pilot who witnessed the accident, after taking on a load of about 165 gallons of herbicide, the airplane began its takeoff run. After departure, the airplane crested a hill and impacted a power pole with the wingtip. It then hit power lines and another pole before coming to rest in a draw. The witness stated that the airplane did not get airborne when it should have. The airplane’s left wingtip impacted the first of two power poles about 1,000 ft from the departure end of the turf runway about 25 ft below the top of the pole and between the top and bottom wire. After impact with the first pole and wires, the airplane impacted a second pole. The airplane then traveled about 180 ft before it impacted the terrain inverted, which resulted in substantial damage to the fuselage and wings. The airplane was equipped with a Continental Motors TSIO-520 series engine. A detailed engine examination is pending recovery of the airplane. B 30 | agairupdate.com
NTSB Identification: CEN20LA279 Date: 07/10/2020 Location: Dalhart, TX Aircraft: Air Tractor AT502 Injuries: None An Air Tractor AT-502B was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Dalhart, Texas. The pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 flight. The engine reportedly rolled back to minimum power in-flight as the pilot was returning from a local flight. The pilot executed a forced landing to an open field. The airplane sustained damage to the outboard left wing structure. An engine examination is planned.
NTSB Identification: ANC20LA069 Date: 07/14/2020 Location: Birch Creek, AK Aircraft: Air Tractor AT-802 Injuries: None An Air Tractor AT-802A airplane, sustained substantial damage when it was involved in an accident near Birch Creek, Alaska. The pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 firefighting flight. The purpose of the flight was to support wildland firefighting operations. The airplane was equipped with Wipline 10000 amphibious floats in the Fire Boss configuration. Scoops could be manually deployed by a switch located on the control stick of the airplane that actuated an electrically driven hydraulic pump; when the switch was released the scoops would retract. Water was routed through the scoops located on each float to a hopper located in the aircraft. In addition, the airplane was equipped with an asymmetric scoop warning system. In the event of an asymmetric scoop deployment, an audible warning “asymmetric scoop” would sound and a red warning light would illuminate on the instrument panel. According to the pilot, on the 28th
scoop of the day, he touched down on the surface of the water and deployed the scoops to begin filling the airplane’s hopper when the airplane veered hard to the right. In an effort to correct for the veer he released the scoop switch and applied left rudder to no avail. He retarded the throttle and applied reverse thrust as the airplane began to impact trees located on the lake’s shoreline. The airplane came to rest upright in a marshy area on the lake’s shoreline sustaining substantial damage to the right wing. An initial on-scene examination of the airplane revealed no mechanical malfunction or anomaly with the airplane’s scoop system. Control continuity was established from the rudder pedals to the water rudders and air rudder. A detailed wreckage examination is pending.

witnesses heard a loud noise from the airplane prior to seeing it “nosedive;” similar to a “backfire” or “an over-inflated tire bursting” and then heard the sound of the impact. All three witnesses stated the airplane appeared to be flying normally before the accident occurred. According to the operator, the pilot had recently started with the company in early May 2020. He had been out flying for about 2.5 hours practicing spray operations and was on his third load of water.
A Cessna C188 airplane was destroyed when it was involved in an accident in Corsica, South Dakota. The pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 137 aerial application flight. The flight originated at Corsica Municipal Airport (D65), Corsica, South Dakota, about 1025, and was destined to complete aerial applications over a field located 15 miles due east of D65. According to witnesses, the pilot had just completed two passes over the field. After completing the second pass, and after almost completing his turn to return for another pass, the airplane suddenly nosed over and impacted the ground. One of the witnesses, who was in his tractor about 1/8 mile away from the accident site, described the airplane made about a ¼ turn (in a spiral) before impact. Two
Date: 07/27/2020 Location: Dakota, IL Aircraft: Robinson R44 Injuries: None The airline transport pilot was repositioning the helicopter for an aerial application mission. He departed from a tending truck and flew southwest to a farm. Once at the farm, circled to find an appropriate landing area. The pilot landed the helicopter in a grass patch near a barn and silo, received maps, and talked to a farm representative. The pilot then repositioned the helicopter to load the application chemical. The chemical was in a tank in a hay wagon and the tops of the hay wagon curved outward. He “slowly” set the helicopter down and felt the left skid touch followed by the right skid. The pilot lowered collective after the helicopter touched down and the main rotor blade struck the hay wagon. The helicopter “jumped” and shook violently. Both left and right windshields ejected from the helicopter and the main rotors came to a stop. The pilot attempted to shut down the engine; however, the engine continued to run. He exited the helicopter and applied the fuel cutoff. Smoke was coming from burning oil associated with a “small” fire underneath the helicopter. The pilot used a fire extinguisher to put out that fire. The helicopter sustained substantial damage to the main and tail rotors, the skids and the helicopter “frames.” The pilot reported there was no mechanical malfunction or failure with the helicopter. His safety recommendation stated that when setting the helicopter down near obstacles, recheck rotor clearance before fully lowering collective and be mindful that “the blades will move out of cone.”

After a brief hiatus, Tom Russell has returned to MidContinent as Director of Maintenance. Tom boasts more than 16-years at Mid-Continent, during which time he worked his way up from mechanic to shop supervisor. Tom brings back with him not only his years of experience, but also a familiarity with customers that makes for a seamless transition during the busy ag season. “The main goal is to turn out safe, quality work in a timely manner”, Tom says of his return. For those who have come to know Malcomb Allen over the last few years, he has rolled up his sleeves and returned to the shop floor, a place where he prefers a hands-on approach to getting pilots and operators back to work in the safest and most efficient turnaround possible. Mid-Continent is proud to be a certified FAA repair station. Contact us today for all your aircraft annual, warranty, and routine maintenance work. 800-325-0885 / tom@midcont. com. Guiltless Decision
We already know where the danger lives. Our decision making is what will make the difference.
A 32 | agairupdate.com
As a traveler in this world, I have had the opportunity to explore different aspects of agricultural aviation by flying ag in at least three countries: Brazil, Canada and the United States. Despite certain peculiarities typical of each country, some things are identical, such as the constant pressure for efficiency, the race against time (and sometimes, against bad weather) and the causes of accidents. Competitiveness between companies often makes operators decide not to adjust prices or charge for long ferries to extremely small fieles. Ultimately, the pilot is expected to make up for the deficit by squeezing the turn and/or carrying a larger load. Some companies even compare performance between pilots. An extra five minutes, more or less, on a job can be the subject of numerous questions for the pilot from the operator. Another very common situation is the pilot taking off with the hopper full to treat several small and distant areas, ending up wasting fuel. Despite the lonely nature of agricultural flight, there is no shortage of people on the ground to try to interfere with decisions. Sometimes the grower wants the crop to be treated in an easterly or westerly direction, when due to obstacles, or even the sun, the best direction would be north or south. It is also very common that both planning and expectations are created always with optimistic scenarios: favorable weather, calm atmosphere, good airplane performance, only to find out when these scenarios are not in play, comes a very important resource: decision making. Learning to say “no” is not an art, but it does save lives and spares regrets. I believe that every agricultural pilot has already put himself in a situation that he regretted, whether by meteorology, fuel calculation or simply deciding to not treat a field. The truth is that it doesn’t matter
if the decision was made solely by the pilot or with another, the responsibility and the consequences will always be on the pilot’s hands and conscience. After getting out of a bad situation, two things can happen. We either learn the lesson and don’t repeat the same mistake, or we start to believe that we are invincible. Those who believe they are invincible, will put themselves again and again in the same situations, until something worse happens. One of the most experienced pilots I have ever met says his goal in aviation was never to be the best or the fastest, but to build a long career and be able to retire. I share that philosophy. Having humility, talking to the most experienced and sharing your own experiences are good practices, as well as knowing how to say “no” to something you believe should not be done. If another pilot is willing to do something that you have refused, does not necessarily mean that he is correct. We have more and more obstacles on the ground and in the air, more and more meticulous regulations, fierce competition and increasingly demanding customers. Like it or not, this is part of our reality. But don’t feel obligated to compromise your own security to make up for it all. The limits of the pilot or the plane will not be shaped by the satisfaction of anyone (the boss, the customer or our ego). Studies clearly show there is nothing new about accidents in agricultural aviation (except for one case that I will briefly quote in the next paragraph). The causes are practically the same: stall during the turn, collision with obstacles or collision in the air, etc. So, we already know where the danger lives. Our decision making is what will make the difference. The case I referred to earlier as an unusual accident that happened recently here in the USA where the product mix caused an excessive
INTERNATIONAL
amount of foam to come out of the hopper and cover the windshield, restricting the pilot’s vision and causing him to return to the airstrip so defoamer could be added to the mix. When taking off for the second time, the pilot again had the windshield covered with foam, had an accident and later died due to injuries. I recently took off in an AirTractor AT-502 with 460 gallons of high density liquid fertilizer. Fortunately, I was aware of this while still on the ground and checked exactly what my takeoff weight was. I flew without problems, but certainly if I had not done my calculations, I would at least have found the performance of the aircraft strange. The subject “product mix” certainly deserves an exclusive article. When I write about it, I will remember to tell of the day when a pilot was saved by the insight of the loader who found the components of the mix a little strange: hydrogen peroxide and copper-based fungicide. But that is a topic for a future article. For now I just want to wish that we all use wisdom in our decisions and remember: there will always be another day, another field, another plane, another job... But our lives are unique and we only have one!
