The year 2020 is now gone and for most, thankfully, with a brighter outlook for 2021. But, isn’t that the very nature of an ag-pilot? A notso-good season passes and we always believe in and look forward to a better season next year. I suppose that is a good degree of optimism. The same is true for the NAAA’s Ag Aviation Expo held last month in Savannah. When given lemons, make lemonade, as the old saying goes. The staff at NAAA did exactly that and perfectly. With only about half the attendance of operators, pilots and vendors, the Ag Aviation Expo was a success despite that. Most who did not come was because of the Covid-19 issue, as best I could tell from talking with others. I hesitated to attend, not so much as a concern for the virus, but the disdain for wearing a mask! Gee, most of us don’t hear very well anyway and the mask surely hinders that even further. Of course, I didn’t recognize many people simply because they had on masks. However, I must say mask wearing was a non-event. NAAA cordially asked through signage all to wear a mask if they could not social distance themselves. I saw more without a mask then with. Hopefully, by the time you read this editorial, a significant number of Americans will have been vaccinated and all will be good with Covid-19 behind us, just like 2020. If you missed this year’s NAAA Ag Aviation Expo, or even if you attended, be sure to visit agairupdate.com for a photo review. Even though attendance was down, there was still good “action” in the exhibit hall. For those vendors selling complex products or services that required time to explain, they did really well. They had more time to spend with their customers. The auction was the highlight of the end of the first day. Many items sold for thousands of dollars, including a PT6A-34AG engine that sold for over $420,000. Pratt & Whitney made the engine available to the
NAAA at a reduced cost that greatly benefited the association. You can read more about the NAAA Ag Aviation Expo held in Savannah last month in this edition’s feature cover story.
Graham has lined up two great stories for the upcoming months; one in Arkansas and another in Canada. It is going to be a lonely North American winter for me. I say that tongue-in-cheek, meaning that I’ll be home for most of January and February. Typically, Graham and I work multiple state trade shows these two months. However, all state trade shows for January and February have been canceled; a first in the history of ag-aviation. Attending state shows was always rewarding. I had the opportunity to see old friends and meet new ones. They helped me stay in the loop, whatever that is. My next trip is back to Brazil the last week of February. Maybe by then I will have taken the China flu vaccine. My last trip to Brazil, only a couple of months ago, was very successful and without getting sick. Of course, Delta Airlines required me to wear a mask during the entire overnight flight to Sao Paulo and the return flight. That is, except while eating or drinking and you already know the resolution to that requirement! Graham has lined up two great stories for the upcoming months; one in Arkansas and another in Canada. We can’t get too far ahead of ourselves with articles, as things can change over several months affecting the content of the article. No

worries, someone or something will come up in ample time, generating more great content for AgAir Update readers in 2021. Back to the lonely months, I have an aversion to cold weather. It is one of the reasons I live in the South. I don’t understand how my northern friends can tolerate it. If the weather gets below 60°F (15°C) and add a little wind, I’m miserable. That means during these lonely months, whatever I do, or wherever I go, it will need to be an “inside job”, or be located further south than Georgia. Maybe there’s an operator in The Florida Keys. It is unfortunate for me that Graham has already visited EOS (turbine engine facility) for an article (in this edition of AAU) in the Miami area. That would have been a good trip to make in January or February. I’ll close this editorial wishing everyone a Happy New Year! Although 2020 is behind us, it will never be forgotten. A prayer or two is in order for the families that lost loved ones this year regardless of how. And, another prayer is in order for the first responders that have faced this pandemic bravely. Great News I want to tell you that yesterday, I won first prize in a literary competition in my city. That just makes me write better and better. I wanted to share this with you and that you have given me the opportunity to be a better person through my passion, which is writing. Also, my articles have been well received by my Uruguayan, Paraguayan and Argentine colleagues. I hope to have the possibility to continue telling my flight experiences. I’m already preparing the next one article. Yesterday, I set a new personal record, 71 landings in one day. I will also write about that. I hope your travels to Brazil are going/ have gone smoothly. I was reading your “From the cockpit” and noticed something that I wanted to correct. You indicated that California AAA canceled their convention but in reality we converted it to a series of Zoom educational webinars. Perhaps, Colorado had to cancel their convention? The CAAA Board made the determination in mid-summer to convert our program to a virtual event since we didn’t want to be the “mask police”, ask attendees and exhibitors to maintain social distancing and many of our presenters would be unable to participate in an inperson event. We did host over 60 attendees that earned over 550 hours of CE..We are hoping to host an in-person convention in Nov 2021. Perhaps your busy schedule will allow you to join us? National Cropduster Day Hey Bill Lavender, How is the world treating you nowadays? Everything is still moving along here in North Texas. Appreciate still getting the mag and the bit about folks knowing “crop dusters” are still flying those flying machines. Anyway, as I get older I still want to do something to honor those among the living and those who sacrificed their lives for the pursuit of being “crop duster pilots” from the 1920s up through today. So, included is my latest endeavor to get the many memories of so many pilots etched into our American and other countries’ histories, every year. Presidential Proclamation Request Request Made By: Bobby J. Wheat, Fonder, International Crop Dusters Day Society Dear President Trump, The not-for-profit International Crop Dusters Day Society founder, Bobby J. Wheat of Winnsboro, Texas, seeks your support in establishing a proclamation recognizing International Crop Dusters Day on May 27, 2021 and every year following in the United States of America. I, Bobby J. Wheat, retired crop duster pilot, am contacting you on behalf of all the fellow crop duster pilots, both living and deceased. As Proclamation Days were recognized by past presidents and current President Trump, I am seeking a proclamation of International Crop Dusters Day by President Trump. In 1921, the U.S. Military furnished several Curtis Jenny airplanes and pilots to investigate the possibility of using aircraft to apply dust to cotton crops. Tests were begun and almost immediately the airplane proved to be a valuable asset to the agricultural industry. The military pilots soon found that they could quickly and accurately apply insecticides to infested fields of boll worms and other pests saving the crops from devastation and utter destruction. This radical new experiment paved the way for the agricultural aviation industry. Soon, a few daring pilots opened crop dusting businesses and others quickly followed. Agricultural flying was on its way to becoming a big business and helping farmers produce crops to feed the hungry citizens of the world. Many early airplanes dominated the skies. Progress was quick to invade the new industry. The public fell in love with the romantic, daring crop duster pilots, leather jackets with scarves flying in the slipstream, who risk life and limb, flying low and slow, under highline wires and skidding around trees, flying out of fields and pastures. For almost 100 years, crop duster pilots have supported farmers and the American
people in helping produce more productive crops. In all those years, thousands of crop duster pilots have flown their ancient biplanes of older days up through the modern airplanes today plying their chosen lot. Is it now time for the United States to honor those, some old, some bold, some young, crop duster pilots? For many years, the National Agricultural Aviation Association and state aerial application associations have promoted the effectiveness of crop duster pilots and their innovative and constant improvements in the industry. This special, dedicated day of May 27 offers the American people a united opportunity to celebrate the successful introduction of crop duster pilots to our food production capabilities. It also gives them insight to the dedication of those considered to be an elite group of pilots, their ideals, values, qualifications and heritage that this special breed of people represents. As soon as possible, I respectfully request that you proclaim or issue an Executive Order deeming May 27 as International Crop Dusters Day throughout the United States of America, both in 2021 and for years to come. I would also ask the President and the White House to notify by email signing of the Proclamation/Resolution or Executive Order and a photograph of the signing by the President for historical posterity. These photos from the late 1960s are of General Airspray in Lucan, Ontario Canada that operated three Stearmans on EDO 28-3430 floats certified by a Canadian STC. At that time, the owner was Roscoe (Roc) Hodgins along with his partner. Today, General Airspray is owned and operated by Paul Hodgins, who submitted these photos. Also, Paul’s son, Dave, a third generation ag-pilot, has just finished his second season. General Airspray operates Ag-Cats and Super Cubs. The Super Cubs are used to spread tree seeds in the off-season. The whereabouts of the pictured aircraft are uncertain.

Remember, I said goodbye to AgAir Update readers because I was going to take a break from writing? Well, I changed my mind because I received an unbelievable proposal to transfer a brand new airplane from the United States of America to Brazil! I couldn’t allow an incredible adventure like this to happen without sharing the experience in an article. I had never flown such a long ferry, much less crossing different continents, countries and islands. But, as Clarice Lispector said, “I like what challenges me, the easy never interested me.” It was with that disposition of spirit that on November 23, 2020 I said goodbye to my family and boarded a commercial flight to the Thrush factory in Albany, Georgia. During my conversation with the ferry contractor, I was informed that it was a special
aircraft as it was the first of that model going to Brazil; a Thrush Switchback. Thrush named the Switchback in reference to its ability to quickly convert from aerial spraying to an aerial firefighting plane and vice versa with its Transland developed gate system. An incredible idea that arrives at an opportune moment, given the number of fires this year around the world. Knowing that it was a special aircraft, further increased my willingness to fulfill this mission entrusted to me. In the factory hangar I was able to admire the aircraft. Imposing, with a new scent and like me, clearly eager to fly. The atmosphere was similar to that preceding a gala event: people moving from side to side, making the last adjustments and preparations. With the aircraft flight manual in hand, I could verify that the operation was very similar to that of other Thrush 510s that I ➤

had flown. That is except for the dumping of the hopper, which due to its firefighting function, has a specific operations panel for this purpose. For long-distance ferry flights, a hopper fuel system is installed, which in addition to the wing fuel, allows a flight time of about 14 hours. A flight like this is said to be a real test for both the plane and the pilot. It’s true! The route involved hours and hours over the waters of the Atlantic Ocean in the regions of the Bahamas and the Caribbean, plus a long stretch over the Amazon jungle.
Day 1- Flight Leg Albany-Fort Lauderdale Equipped with a life raft, life jacket, backpack with survival equipment at sea and in the jungle, some changes of clothes and other equipment, I embarked with the Switchback to start my journey. The big day was here! In addition to all the paraphernalia on board, it was also important to make sure that the paperwork was in order. The flight plan for this step was filled out and sent via the ForeFlight application on my tablet. Quick and simple, since this flight leg was all within the United States.
All set, time to fly! Almost...Before taking off, I felt like a real diva, posing for photos and videos that recorded the moments of our departure from the pre-flight inspection, engine start and finally the takeoff. Of course, I found everything very fun, but the star of this great moment was the aircraft. Thrush has an interesting tradition of playing Pharrel Williams’ Happy song on the hangar’s speaker system each time a new aircraft leaves for the customer delivery flight. playing, an entourage carefully followed my every move. I imagine that for them it was like saying goodbye to a child, who leaves to conquer the world. Everyone there invested hours of work and effort to assemble the magnificent puzzle that is to build this airplane. Without the effort of these people, the aircraft would be nothing more than an inanimate pile of metal. But thanks to these men and women, that metal comes to life and takes to the sky! I had to take a few deep breaths to contain the enthusiasm, because it is extremely exciting to feel part of something so great.
Equipped with a life raft, life jacket, backpack with survival equipment at sea and in the jungle, some changes of clothes and other equipment, I embarked with the Switchback to start my journey. Finally at 16:20 UTC, I took off from the Albany Airport headed for Fort Lauderdale Executive. I requested VFR Flight Following. I leveled off at 7500 MSL and started to explore the machine. One thing that always catches my attention with the GE engine is its response even to very subtle throttle adjustments. The fact that the aircraft is equipped with a digital panel (MVP) makes this very evident. It is possible to note the slightest variations in torque, RPM, NG and ITT. Another thing that I like a lot is the cruise fuel consumption. At about 70% torque, the engine consumes around 48-49 gallons / hour. At that power setting, even with a slight headwind, my ground speed easily stayed around 140-145 mph, even with the spray pump installed and the prominent and charming Switchback belly of the airplane. During the first leg of the flight and very close to my destination, rain cut me off from my route. After some unsuccessful attempts to get around ➤

the rain, I decided to land at a nearby location and wait. The airport I chose was Pahokee, which is right next to a huge lake called Lake Okeechobee (a name this Brazilian could only read and barely pronounce). With a southerly wind, I chose to land on runway 18. A delightful first landing, nothing different from the other 510s I had flown. I was greeted by a nice guy who made fresh coffee and offered me water, information and let me use the phone to check the weather. When I think of Florida, I think of the Everglades. I don’t know about you, but the first image that comes to mind is that of alligators. So, I refueled the wings, just in case I found more rain and needed to divert. I was already close to Fort Lauderdale and as soon as the weather opened, I headed for the famous and busy KFXE airport. As soon as I called the tower I realized the amount of traffic approaching and taking off from this airport. A controller, who apparently was not having her best day, ran with the ball. She spoke very fast and with a very strong accent. I believe that the only way to make gringos understand how we feel in a situation like this, would be to take them to the northeast of Brazil (or perhaps to the South) and ask the controller to speak at the speed of light and with a very heavy accent. I am from Minas Gerais state and we say everything slowly and easily. But going back to the KFXE tower, I maneuvered as best I could and finally was
cleared for the 09 final for another quiet and steady landing, typical of the Thrush! To my relief, and to relief of ground control, my overnight tie-down was close by. I cut the engine, did the overnight procedures for the aircraft and went to the hotel, which is just a few steps from the airport fence. Relieved and happy to have completed the first leg of my journey, I was met by the ferry contractor. We had agreed to meet in Fort Lauderdale so that he could give me some instructions. So, my day was not yet over. This first leg of the flight was the easiest. Soon, I would leave the U.S. and would first have to deal with the legal procedures of leaving the country taking an aircraft to another continent and Brazil. We made a video call with a pilot that had more experience in this type of ferrying. He was able to explain what to expect the rest of the route and the necessary paperwork. I was exhausted, but happy. With paper and pen in hand, I wrote down a bunch of acronyms and procedures related to the documents I would need to cross borders, all new to me. I was told some islands were demanding the COVID test. Little did I know at the time that this would be the “stone in the shoe” of my magnificent flight. But I’ll tell you about this in the next issue. That night I slept soundly, dreaming of distant lands and my next destination, the island of Puerto Rico. (To be continued...)

Safety Wire … It Can Save Your Life Loose hardware or components have led to accidents, many of them fatal. Properly secure aircraft components with safety wire, ensure that hardware locking mechanisms are correctly installed on your aircraft, and check them often to confirm they are taut and ready for flight.
Fasteners, Wires, and Fast Facts Safety wiring, or positive wire locking, is a type of locking device used to secure (“safety”) cap screws, nuts, bolt heads, and turnbuckle barrels, which cannot be safetied by any other practical means. Safety wire is necessary in areas where vibration could loosen a bolt. Any tendency of the hardware to loosen is counteracted by the tightening of the wire. Used properly, it will lock so that the wire remains taut and prevents further movement.
Keep it Locked While there are several methods of safetying aircraft parts, two other basic methods include cotter pins and self-locking nuts. • Cotter pins: used for securing bolts, screws, nuts, and pins on aircraft and engine controls, landing gear, and tailwheel assemblies, or any other point where a turning or actuating movement takes place. They should not be re-used. • Self-locking nuts: a type of nut that resists loosening when exposed to vibrations and torque, used in applications where they will not be removed often. Replace them when they’re no longer maintaining minimum prevailing torque, since repeated removal and installation will cause the self-locking nut to lose its locking feature.
Tips to Keep Things Tight: • •
If there is a hole in a bolt … it likely requires a cotter pin or safety wire in it. Be sure to ask. When installing or inspecting safety wire, ask yourself, does it pass the “Righty-Tighty” test (i.e., ensure that the safety wire is applied so that it is in tension in the

tightening direction — the direction that would cause the bolt to “Tighty”). • Safety wire should be tight and maintain a light tension when secured. You should notice about six to eight twists per inch with a good safety wire job. Safety wire is not intended to take the place of the proper installation of fasteners. Always make sure that the fasteners or components are tightened to the proper torque first, then install the safety wire. Always remove all old safety wire before installing new. • When inspecting fiber or nylon locknuts, make sure the bolt or stud extends at least the full round or chamfer through the nut. Flat end bolts, studs, or screws should extend at least 1⁄32 inch (or 1 and 1/2 threads) through the nut. • Castle nuts require a cotter pin or safety wire to lock them down. Turnbuckles should either have safety clips or safety wire. If you’re doing owner-performed maintenance, make sure that you know what you’re doing, and get a second set of eyes to look at your work after you’re done. If you have any doubts, ask your mechanic, get some advice from your Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter, or talk to your local FAA Flight Standards District Office inspectors — they are more than willing to help. There are many other parts that require safety wire or other means of locking. FAA Advisory Circular AC 43.13-1B outlines the various locking methods and the proper safety wiring procedures. Nine Unsung Heroes Awarded by NAAA at 2020 Ag Aviation Expo

NAAA celebrated the achievements of nine deserving individuals at the Excellence in Ag Aviation Banquet Dec. 10, the final event of the 2020 Ag Aviation Expo in Savannah, Georgia. Since the earliest days of the association, the National Agricultural Aviation Association has recognized the outstanding achievements of members through the NAAA Annual Awards. The recipients of the 2020 NAAA Awards were honored for their commitment to their communities, safety and the betterment of the agricultural aviation industry. NAAA’s “Fine Nine” awardees are as follows.
2020 Agrinaut Award Bruce Hubler, TAE Aerospace, Caldwell, Idaho The Agrinaut Award is presented to an agricultural aircraft operator or operating organization that has made an outstanding contribution in the field of ag aircraft operations. NAAA’s 2020 recipient, Bruce Hubler, whose career in aviation has spanned many areas, including flying Apache helicopters in the Idaho National Guard, becoming an Apache maintenance test pilot, a turbine engine mechanic, and an ag pilot and operator. After retiring from the National Guard, Hubler capitalized on his aircraft mechanic experience to start AgAir Turbines. He quickly became recognized as an expert on TPE331 engines. This allowed him to work closely with his father, Bill Hubler, and brother, Gary, running the family spraying business: Valley Air. Meanwhile, a few former Army buddies
started Aviation Specialties Unlimited in Boise, Idaho, doing night vision goggles training and conversions for EMS helicopters and other specialty aviation niches. Most of Valley Air’s spraying is done at night. Based on his experiences flying ag at night, combined with his night vision goggles experience in the Apache, Hubler could see that NVG technologies had advanced to the point to where they would be useful for ag flying. Some major obstacles stood in the way, however. The FAA’s regulations were overly restrictive. For example, night vision goggles had never been approved for fixed-wing use below 500 feet. Furthermore, no civil aircraft had been approved for single-pilot use of NVGs. Both limitations would have to be overcome to make NVGs possible for agricultural operations. Hubler attacked these obstacles head-on. He had constant discussions with FAA representatives. Once an understanding was reached, Hubler registered two of his aircraft as experimental aircraft for NVG operations: a Thrush and a Dromader. He worked tirelessly to perfect lighting systems, instrument layouts, glare shields and operational procedures to safely conduct spraying operations with NVG equipment. In the end, he proved to over a dozen FAA representatives that ag pilots could safely operate these aircraft, identify crops and sensitive areas, and see and avoid obstacles with night vision goggles in a way far superior to unaided night flight. Hubler, along with his colleagues at ASU, did the hard work and research to make night vision goggle spray applications legal and practical ➤

2020 Allied Industry Individual Award Fletcher Sharp, Covington Aircraft Engines, Plano, Texas The Allied Industry Individual Award is presented to individuals whose efforts have contributed significantly to the allied industry and the aerial application industry. NAAA’s 2020 recipient, Fletcher Sharp, has over 40 years of experience in the aviation industry supporting Pratt & Whitney Canada-powered engines. His dedication and passion for providing exceptional customer support have earned his peers’ respect and gratitude. Sharp is an accomplished mechanic, holding an A&P and IA license, and is a commercial pilot. As a field support representative for Pratt & Whitney Canada for 27 years, he was responsible for providing guidance and resolving technical issues for his customers. For 15 years of his service with Pratt & Whitney, his territory was North Texas, which included supporting ag pilots, operators, maintenance facilities and Air Tractor. Sharp was the first point of contact for Pratt & Whitney Canada operators on all technical matters within Pratt’s family of engines. In the early ’90s, Sharp was handpicked by the president of Pratt & Whitney Canada to help expand Pratt’s participation in the ag aviation industry and improve support. Sharp’s leadership and commitment to providing better support were two drivers that helped Pratt & Whitney Canada become the dominant powerplant in ag aviation. Sharp retired from Pratt & Whitney in 2006 and became Covington Aircraft Engines’ Texas ag sales manager. As a Covington team member, Sharp has B 4 | agairupdate.com
provided training at numerous state and national conventions. In fact, from 1992 to 2020, he only missed one NAAA convention. He has always been part of the Pratt & Whitney Canada team presenting the all-day PT6 maintenance seminar at the start of each NAAA Expo. Sharp finished his eighth and final year as the propulsion director on NAAA’s board at the end of 2020. As propulsion director, he faithfully attended NAAA’s board meetings and coordinated the turbine engine panel at the Ag Aviation Expo. NAAA’s Allied Industry Committee honored Sharp with the 2020 Allied Industry Individual Award for his unwavering commitment to his customers, the ag aviation industry and NAAA.
2020 John Robert Horne Memorial Award Emily Daniel, Wings Aerial Applicators, Southampton, New Jersey The John Robert Horne Memorial Award is presented to a pilot with five or fewer years of experience as an aerial applicator who has an exemplary safety record and has contributed to the safety of the industry. NAAA’s 2020 recipient, Emily Daniel, has flown for Wings Aerial Applicators/ Jersey Devil Dusters in New Jersey for three seasons. She has accumulated a little over 1,000 hours of ag time without any incidents, accidents or drift claims. Daniel has impeccable airmanship and aeronautical decisionmaking skills and is keenly aware of the vulnerabilities of being a low-time ag pilot. She has piloted a Piper Brave, Pawnee, and Weatherly 201C and 620B planes. This season she will be transitioning to a turbine-powered ag plane. Daniel is responsible for integrating several safety-oriented policies and practices at her company, including Nomex flight suits for their pilots,
training plans for new pilot training and transitions, emergency response plans and maintaining emergency contacts for all employees. The Ag Aviation Flight Suit Initiative is a social media platform Daniel created to promote wearing flight suits. She uses the forum to spotlight pilots who made the decision to wear a flight suit and encourage others to do the same. Daniel has volunteered at several events promoting the industry and NAAA and has encouraged young people to consider a career in ag aviation. She is on the scholarship board for the Aeroclub of Pennsylvania and has been an excellent mentor for young aviators and aviation students. While Daniel is the first woman ever to receive the John Robert Horne Memorial Award, her gender is not what stood out to the NAAA Awards Committee. What did, beyond her own flight safety record, is her commitment to promoting a culture of safety within her operation and across the industry. Emily Daniel is an advocate for aviation safety, both on the ground and in the air.
2020 Larsen-Miller Community Service Award Nancy Turnquist, Whirly Birds, Lake Wales, Florida The Larsen-Miller Community Service Award recognizes individuals for their outstanding contributions to their community. NAAA’s 2020 recipient, Nancy Turnquist, is an enthusiastic supporter of anything that will enhance the quality of life in Lake Wales, Florida, where she was born and raised. She and her husband, Lee Turnquist, owned a helicopter application service, Whirly Birds, and raised two daughters in Lake Wales. Turnquist has volunteered tirelessly to promote her community her entire adult life. Her acts of volunteerism are long and varied, but the connecting tissue that links them together is that she cares for and takes an interest in people.

In the early years, she was a leader in her daughters’ Brownies and Girls Scout troops. These days, as a volunteer with the Family Literacy Academy, she tutors dropouts seeking their GED diploma. She also mentors young mothers of preschoolers. She is a past president of the Lake Wales Library Association and is active in her local church. Turnquist has been a member of NAAA and a welcome presence at NAAA’s annual convention for decades. She also is active in the Florida Agricultural Aviation Association and SEAF, which puts on the Southeast Aero Cultural Fair. Everyone who comes into her orbit is better for it. She is gracious, witty and always has wisdom to share. Turnquist has devoted her life to lifting other people up, whether it is with a smile, words of encouragement, or by supporting a cause she believes in.
2020 Opal & Bill Binnion Memorial Award Willie Lee, Aerial Crop Protection, Belle Glade, Florida The Opal & Bill Binnion Memorial Award is presented to individuals who have contributed to NAAA’s efforts to educate the public about aerial application. NAAA’s 2020 recipient, Willie Lee, has been a pilot and operator flying in the Glades of South Florida for over 60 years. He has a deep passion for ag aviation and a love for passing on the trade to young people. Years back, realizing the need to keep talented young people in Belle Glade, Lee felt he needed to do something to further community involvement with agriculture and ag aviation, in particular. With many large-scale farming operations within the community, plenty of opportunities existed to start a rewarding career in agriculture. The EAA Young Eagles typically give airplane rides to over 100 young people, giving them their first taste of aviation as they soar above the Everglades. The event has been an enormous success, but Lee wanted to do even more to guarantee a future for the young people of his community. He established a scholarship fund to support young people in their agriculture and aviation educational endeavors. This scholarship has already paved the way for two local teens pursuing careers in ag aviation, an engineering student and several more in agricultural sciences. Lee epitomizes what the Opal & Bill Binnion Memorial Award is all about.
2020 Evans-Christopher Operation S.A.F.E. Award Tim Shamblin, Aero Applications, Burley, Idaho The Evans-Christopher Operation S.A.F.E. Award acknowledges individuals that have made outstanding contributions to NAAREF’s Operation S.A.F.E. program. Tim Shamblin is an accomplished agricultural aviator and leader in the industry. He owns Aero Applications in Idaho. He services about 150,000 acres a year, about 40% of which is dry applications. Shamblin completed NAAA’s leadership training program and continues to develop his professional relationship both as an applicator and a well-respected Operation S.A.F.E. analyst. After being certified as an Operation S.A.F.E. analyst in 2010, he put his new talents to work. Early on, he struggled with WRK’s fluorometer system
during clinics in the Pacific Northwest region. He soon convinced the Idaho Agricultural Aviation Association to purchase the updated spectrometer system. That allowed him to be more efficient and help characterize more aircraft. Shamblin uses much of his own personal Operation S.A.F.E. equipment and helps characterize 30 to 40 or more aircraft at Operation S.A.F.E. clinics each year with participants from Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Nevada. There has been a keen interest in cover crop seeding in recent years. He built a set of collectors and utilized the latest software to help operators optimize their dry applications. Shamblin is the type of guy who takes nothing at face value. It is one of the qualities that makes him so well-suited to be an Operation S.A.F.E. analyst.
2020 Related Industry Award Jeffrey Tippins, Starr Companies, Atlanta, Georgia The Related Industry Award recognizes outstanding contributions by an allied industry member and his or her company. Jeffrey Tippins of Starr Companies has been actively supporting NAAA for the past 10 years. After graduating from Georgia College and State University School of Business, he joined NationAir Insurance Agency as a sales executive. After a few years on the agency side of the insurance business, Tippins became a light aircraft underwriter at AIG in Atlanta. This is where he got his first introduction to agricultural aviation, which he enjoys immensely. At AIG, he quickly rose to assistant branch manager. Tippins continued his advancement on the underwriting side of the insurance business when he joined Starr Companies in 2008 as a branch manager. Tippins has been on the NAAA Insurance Committee for years and has contributed greatly to their efforts. For the past two years, he was the voting board member for the Allied Insurance division. Fran de Kock, Battlefords Airspray, North Battleford, Saskatchewan The William O. Marsh Safety Award recognizes significant achievements in safety, safety education or an outstanding operation safety program. Fran de Kock, NAAA’s 2020 recipient, opened Battlefords Airspray in 1980. Seeing a need for safely trained ag pilots, he began doing some ag pilot training in 1983 and held his first formal training class in 2000, when Battlefords bought its first dual-seat ag plane. De Kock offers initial ag pilot training, recurrency and turbine transition training, most of which is done in dualseat ag planes. Throughout his training programs, de Kock stresses safety. He gets a sense of satisfaction when operators who have hired pilots from his program tell him that they are “ready to go to work.” However, he also tells anyone who will listen that new ag pilots, regardless of where they come from, need continuing mentorship to develop and work safely. As a proponent of pilot mentorship, de Kock has been an active participant in NAAREF’s speed mentoring and Compaass Rose programs, which are held at NAAA’s convention to assist new B 8 | agairupdate.com
Matt Hovdenes, Right Way Ag., Harwood, North Dakota The Zoren and Joan O’Brien Memorial Outstanding Service Award is presented to an individual for exceptional service to the agricultural aviation industry and the National Agricultural Aviation Association. NAAA’s 2020 recipient is Matt Hovdenes of Harwood, North Dakota. Hovdenes got his start in ag aviation by completing the ag aviation program at the University of MinnesotaCrookston. He started spraying in 2002 and has worked for operators in Nebraska, Minnesota and North Dakota. In 2019, Hovdenes started his own operation, which he fittingly named Right Way Ag. That sums up well his philosophy for his business and his service to NAAA and NAAREF, as well as his home state association. Hovdenes was president of the North Dakota Agricultural Aviation Association from 2010 to ’12. He became a PAASS Presenter in 2015 and the North Dakota rep to NAAA’s board in ’16. Hovdenes shines in his willingness to help with board work on the state and national level.
At the NAAA level, he chairs the Knowledge & Skills Ad Hoc Committee, which is working to comply with the NTSB’s recommendation to modernize the FAR Part 137 knowledge and skills test to keep Part 137 pilots current in their skills as ag pilots. The CAM 8 Ad Hoc Committee Hovdenes is involved in is working to achieve a long-term solution to questions about the use of the CAM 8 document in the certification of agricultural aircraft. Hovdenes’ goal is to make the industry safer and prevent unnecessarily burdensome regulations. In North Dakota, he is actively involved in issues such as tower marking and the regulation of unmanned aerial application using UAVs at the state level. Many of Hovdenes’ activities focus on people newer to the industry. He was instrumental in the revamp of the Compaass Rose educational program, which addresses issues between new pilots and the operators supervising them. Since its new format began in 2017, the Compaass Rose program has become more organized and efficient in accomplishing its goal of providing information to new ag pilots. He has also helped with the speed mentoring program since 2015. NAAA is pleased to recognize Hovdenes for his unswerving commitment to serving his association and industry the right way. Pioneers from this region significantly advanced the art. Among them were people such as C.W. “Pappy” Blackwell, Heard Cardin, and Parker Flying Service. Later on, the Mitchell brothers, “Poley” and Fields, founded M & M Air Service, a firm that was to become one of the largest in the world. It is now owned and operated by George Mitchell, a past president of the NAAA. Also entering aerial application in this region were legendary figures like Bill Kuby of Alamo, Lloyd Nolen of Mercedes, Dave Setter of Weslaco, and Ken Medders of San Benito. These men, plus many others, expanded Texas agricultural aviation to a remarkable degree. An important early Texas operation, the Texas Aeroplane Corporation, was organized in 1928 by Cliff Maus and Robert Maverick at Corpus. They utilized what aircraft they could find, notably Travel-Airs and some early Wacos. The legendary “Slats” Rogers worked for the
company for a while as a pilot. His real name was Floyd Hurtial, but for reasons unknown, he changed it permanently to Slats Rogers and was known by this name until his death. a’ early flying consisted primarily of smuggling, bootlegging, drinking, and gambling. Much of his reputation was built around an airplane that he was reputed to have build and named “Old Soggy.” Slats had taken a few flying lessons from Eddie Stinson, but like most real old-timers was, for the most part, self-taught. For a brief period in 1916, he gave instruction himself at Fort Sill, but after the war he went to work as an engineer on the Santa Fe Railroad. Legend has it that Slats bootlegged extensively on this job and managed to save enough cash to buy a brand new LincolnStandard airplane. He used this plane to haul booze and contraband from Mexico, a profitable operation. All through the 1920s, Slats barnstormed, mostly through Texas and Oklahoma, and was ➤

more or less continuously in trouble with the law. Once he was caught and tossed in the Dallas jail. He quickly talked his way into becoming a trusty. With a free run of the jail, he soon discovered a large stash of confiscated booze stored in the evidence room. Slats made himself a key to the room and gradually sold off all of the booze, some 680 gallons of it, right out of the jailhouse door! Nothing came of this feat, since, in Slats’ own words, “Everybody knew that the Courthouse gang was crooked anyway!” Slats experienced a conversion of sorts and finally straightened himself out. He then went into full-time crop dusting, setting up his own firm, Valley Aero Duster Service at Mission, in 1931. He operated the company until 1943. Finally, a happy second marriage took place and Slats quit flying entirely. He died in 1956 at McAllen and is buried at Mission. Slats, along with others of his breed, although brought up during a time of recklessness and lawlessness in aviation circles, contributed a great deal to the art of agricultural flying. Their love of airplanes kept the spark alive that developed agricultural aviation into a respected business. C.W. “Pappy” Blackwell, an important Texas early bird, began his flying career with Cliff Maus at Corpus about 1929. Blackwell then went on his own in 1930, organizing a dusting firm known as Blackwell Flying Service at the Harlingen airport. His fleet consisted of one Hisso-Swallow and a TravelAir with an OXX-6. As business developed, Blackwell procured some Rissopowered Wacos and some 2000 series Travel-Airs, all of which were later updated with J series Wright engines. Some of Blackwell’s pilots were Claude Cossett, Jack Redpath, and Carl Farrow. In 1933 a devastating hurricane wiped out Blackwell’s operation completely, but he regrouped and moved to Palestine, where the city built him a shop-hangar on the airport. He ran this operation until 1937 and then moved back to Harlingen. B 12 | agairupdate.com
Blackwell Flying Service brought agricultural aviation much further along in Texas, and the firm operated well after World War II. In later years, the unit was run by “Pappy’s” son, Charles, who is still engaged in flying as a corporate pilot for a large firm in San Antonio. Due to the work of these early pioneers, small operations began springing up across the state and, by the middle 1930s, crop dusting operations were established in virtually all heavily farmed areas of Texas. It is interesting that records show that in 1926 only 3,000 acres of crop land were dusted by plane, but by 1928 this figure had increased to over 50,000 acres. With the advent of many new firms, Texas agriculture shortly became the largest single user of agricultural aircraft in the country. For a number of reasons, early California-Arizona-Nevada ag flying development is harder to trace than it is in the Southern states. It was developing in the 1920’s and took great forward leaps in the early 1930’s. The first notable efforts were apparently made by two pioneer airmen, Allen H. Rhodes and Colonel Livingston Irving, who formed a partnership in the 1920’s and began operating at least two TravelAirs in the San Joaquin Valley, working the fruit orchards. Their hoppers were home-crafted and carried about 400 pounds of dust. Spreaders were the primitive venturi type, with a wind-driven gear box and hopper agitator, similar to those produced earlier by Delta Laboratory. Irving was farm-oriented and became interested in finding a way to sow rice, a very important crop to that region, by air. Ground seeding was a slow, time-consuming task with about 40 acres per day the limit. Experiments were initiated, using a Waco with a Wright J-4 and a galvanized iron hopper holding 400 pounds. Hopper controls were discarded auto brake handles. The two men organized “seeding teams,” composed of a pilot, mechanic, and two loader/flagmen. During the 1929 growing season, these teams successfully seeded hundreds

of acres. Soon they were servicing as many as 400 acres per day per plane-IO times greater than ground equipment. Their success in this area expanded agricultural flying tremendously in California. Rhodes and Irving were among the first to introduce effective aerial seeding of rice. Another “first” by this firm, recently pointed out by Phil Murray, is that Rhodes and Irving probably utilized the first monoplane for dusting. It was a rare Moreland, in which they installed a hopper. They worked throughout the San Joaquin Valley. Contrary to popular belief, another Californian, Milton S. Robertson, undoubtedly did the first liquid spraying done by air in 1930. In an affidavit supplied by George Sanders of Agrinautics, Robertson makes the following statement: “I, Milton S. Robertson, while in charge of dusting operations for Curtiss-Wright Flying Service in central California during the summer of 1930, conceived the idea of using a hollowcore brush for the application of insecticides. “In trying to control pests on cotton near Dos Palos, difficulty was experienced in getting the chemicals to adhere to the plant leaves. Under the supervision of Stuart Lockwood of the State Department of Agriculture, we applied a dust with a deliquescent ingredient. Because of the low humidity, this effort failed.” Although first attempts were not satisfactory, Robertson continued his work with the rotary brush and, with Britton “Bing” Ray, organized the well r emembered Independent Crop Dusting Company at San Francisco. The rotary brush was quite successfully developed and used in fruit orchard work and on truck crops. This unit was later renamed the ICD Rotor. About this time, Hawke Crop Dusting Company at Modesto, headed by “Pappy” Dunlap, began producing a somewhat different type of rotary brush and both firms were spraying liquids in 1933. A leading entomologist of the period, Frank B. Herbert, wrote an extensive report on work done by these two firms in a booklet reprinted by the Journal of Economic Entomology, Vol. 26, No. 6, in December 1933. Herbert is directly quoted as follows: “Aircraft spraying is a new development which seems to offer considerable promise, especially on large acreage or where speed is of importance. “Two companies, the Independent Crop Dusting Company of San Francisco and the Hawke Crop Dusting Company of Modesto are now equipped to apply liquid materials. Both do satisfactory work. “The Independent Company flies a new Standard biplane, powered with a 225 HP Wright Whirlwind motor, while the Hawke Company uses the same type motor, but built their own monoplane at Modesto. On the monoplane, the supply tank is behind the pilot. Prior to this time the Hawke Company built another type liquid applicator which was discarded. This used B 14 | agairupdate.com
the exhaust of the motor to break up the oil being sprayed on the fruit trees, but the extreme heat of the exhaust made it dangerous to use. “The Independent Company has developed rotating brushes to break up the liquid. The oil flows by gravity to the ‘rotors,’ which are situated beneath the lower wings. Each rotor is turned at about 4,000 RPM by means of a propeller. When the valve ahead of the rotor is opened, a centrifugal pump in the center of the rotor throws the liquid out through spacers into a steel bristle or ‘buffer’ brush, which in rotating tears the material into a fine fog. In spraying truck crops, they use four rotors, but during dormant fruit tree work, the two outer rotors are taken off, giving fine coverage. “The Hawke Company has developed a propeller-type rotor. This has two sets of triple propellers, the rear three being hollow. The liquid flows by gravity to these and is forced out through jets set in a small venturi tube, which is set at right angles to the axis of the rotor. Centrifugal force develops a pressure of about 300 pounds, which breaks up the liquid into a fine fog. At present, the Hawke plane is equipped with only one rotor, but it will have two later, which will turn even faster than at present.” These planes, equipped as indicated, sprayed a slightly heated crop oil called Miscible Coprol, a material called Dormant Soluble Tox, and another fungicide/insecticide named Soluble Toxona 75E for the control of sundry diseases and insects damaging to commercial fruit orchards. Among the firm’s clients were California Packing Company at Wheatland and Balfour, Guthrie and Company at Brentwood. Entomologist Herbert stated that both firms’ planes flew directly over every row, at about two to four feet altitude, and occasionally knocked off small branches. He said, “The oil drifts downward onto the trees, covering the upper side of the twigs and branches heavier than the lower side. This coverage at first does not look to be satisfactory, but soon the oil begins to spread and the trees glisten in the sun. After 24 to 48 hours, the oil has crept until it covers the buds and the underside of the smaller twigs. The lower sides of the larger branches are not completely covered. Dormant trees require six to eight gallons of fungicide per acre and 10 or possibly 12 gallons of oil for scale control.” Both firms also utilized these spraying systems with as many as four rotors per plane in treating truck crops with various preparations available at that time for disease and insect control. This is rather startling, when one considers that it occurred nearly 50 years ago! Independent Dusting Company continued to refine its rotary brush system, and it became widely used much later. George Sanders of Agrinautics in Las Vegas subsequently acquired manufacturing rights to these units. Some of them can still be found on vintage Stearmans stored in hangars throughout the country.

AMERICUS, GA — It was just too interesting, too inviting, to have two Turbine Braves based within 30 miles of each other with a different combination of turbine engines, a PT6A-20 and a PreCentury 43BL. I had to see if I could set up a couple of evaluation flights for these two remarkable ag planes and form my own opinions. The first Turbine Brave I flew was nine years ago. Jim Mills of Turbines, Inc. in Terra Haute, Indiana was fabricating the conversion. He had the aircraft at Kosola and Associates in Albany, Georgia for engineering design work. I flew the aircraft and found it to have amazing performance (see AAU June 1992). One of these Turbine Braves was a twin to the one I flew several years ago.
PT6A Turbine Brave Frankie Williams, owner of Souther Field Aviation the Turbine Brave with a PT6A-20 engine, and traded Jim Mills an Ag Cat for the 1976 Brave. After operating the Turbine Brave through the 2000 season, Frankie says he couldn’t be more pleased. “Bill, I have a lot of small fields with some of them as far away as 15-20 miles. With the speed and the agility of the Turbine Brave, I found the aircraft to fit my operation perfectly,” explains Frankie. He had operated Cessna Ag Trucks/ Huskys for more than 9,000 hours. In 1998-99, Frankie operated a 400 Brave, piston-powered. His annual average production rate was 84 acres an hour. With the Turbine ➤

Brave, working the same fields, the annual average production rate increased to 105 acres an hour (25% increase), with less maintenance, less effort and more safety. Frankie works his Brave at 130-135 mph using 20 pounds of torque at 2,000 rpm. The PT6A20 is rated for 550 shp at 39 psi and 2,200 rpm, however for the Turbine Brave installation, the engine is derated to 400 shp with a torque limit of 29 psi. This torque limit is always obtainable, under any environmental conditions. Thus, there is never a shortage of horsepower. Frankie typically limits his takeoff power setting to 25 psi and 2200 rpm. Fuel burn at working power settings averages 28 gph.

Frankie explained that typically a PT6A-20 with a fresh IRAN cost under $100,000. With his particular Turbine Brave, he figures he has about $175,000 in the aircraft with the conversion. The aircraft is outfitted with 40 CP nozzles, using the middle size hole at 40 psi; most of the work is 3-5 gallons per acre. Swath marking is with an Ag-Nav GPS unit. Although Frankie’s fields are so small GPS is not really needed. However,

since Souther Field Aviation is an Ag-Nav dealer, it seemed appropriate to operate one, offering his customers an immediate back-up if needed. Frankie explained that typically a PT6A-20 with a fresh IRAN cost under $100,000. With his particular Turbine Brave, he figures he has about $175,000 in the aircraft with the conversion.
Pre-Century Turbine Brave About 30 miles east of Americus, near the rural community of Unadilla, Georgia, a Garrett PreCentury Turbine Brave resides, owned by David Chancy of A&C Aviation. Many of you know David from a company, Davidon, that he is in partnership with Don Hays, the DRP-955 folks. This company also manufactures the Hi-Tek Rotary Atomizer for controlled droplet sizes applied at low volumes. David bought his Brave from a local operator where it had been abandoned under pecan trees for eight years. The A&C Aviation shop literally stripped the aircraft to the “bare bone”. The piston engine was discarded and replaced with a Garrett Pre-Century 43BL, derated from 575 shp to 400 shp. The engine core was purchased from Dodson International and sent to Smyrna Air Center. Calvin Mudgett at Smyrna Air Center dismantled the engine and gearbox, inspecting and repairing as necessary (IRAN). He advised David that after 1,000 hours to return the engine for another inspection. The rest of the aircraft, i.e. wings, side panels, etc. was primed and painted normally. Although Frankie Williams’ PT6A-powered Brave is a Mill’s Conversion with an STC, David Chancy’s Garrett-powered Brave conversion is based on a 337 field approval. The design work for the Garrett Brave comes from J.R. Davis of Texas, that was later picked up by the late Bob Song of Kansas.

Graciously, Frankie and David allowed me to fly the two aircraft. The weather was reasonably cool, with neither aircraft filled with water. However, the PT6A Brave outfitted with a spreader and the Garrett Brave with an all-new design liquid spray system, both possessed excellent flying characteristics. I flew the PT6 Brave first and immediately noticed upon roll-out on the pull-up from a spray run the ailerons went to the stops before the aircraft began its roll. I found the same for the Garrett Brave. It didn’t really make a negative difference, actually it was somewhat of a comfort, knowing the risk of over control is substantially reduced. I didn’t consider it a problem. Both aircraft worked across the field in the 130-140 mph range. I noted the Garrett Brave was faster. However, that could be the difference in the way a pilot sets the power. With the PT6 the engine’s torque limit is 39 psi, however, for the Brave installation the cockpit torque gauge is red-
outside the aircraft. The core materials were purchased from Stainless Steel Fabricators of Arkansas and were reworked by A&C Aviation’s shop. The load valve/tubing and the Y-boom are outside the fuselage where they are easily accessed. Also, note the installation of Hi-Tek Rotary atomizers. All applications include the addition of DRP-955 for drift and evaporation control.

lined at 29 psi, limiting takeoff shaft horsepower to 400 shp. With the Garrett Brave the pilot pays more attention to the ITT gauge with a limit of 535°C that basically translates into 400 shp. The engine’s limits are actually 575 shp at 576°C. The working ITT setting is 480°-490°C, while I flew the aircraft at 450°C. When I pushed the throttle forward until the ITT gauge reached 500°C, the airspeed picked up to an indicated 150 mph, lots of wind noise and more or less an uncomfortable feeling. Maybe this was because I had been told the indicated airspeed was 15 mph less than the WAG GPS indicated! I think most ag pilots would agree 165 mph airspeed is a bit fast! I talked extensively with both Frankie and Garrett Brave pilot, Jeff Reed, about how the two aircraft performed during the summer with a load. Both related the same basic observations. The aircraft is light to the touch. It is quick to and across the field with a load. Both aircraft work any time, under any condition with 250 gallons. At the end of the day, both pilots are as comfortable with the last load as he was with the first. With Frankie Williams and David Chancy, both were looking for a cost-effective way to upgrade their flying services to turbine engine power. Frankie for years had operated the Continental opposed engine, while David is still operating the PZL-3S 600 hp radial engine. With the trend to lower application rates, the desire for turbine reliability and productivity, Frankie and David feel they have found this with the Turbine Brave. This “20 Years Ago” article is dedicated to the memory of Frankie Williams.

This is the first in a series of articles featuring the inductees into the National Agricultural Aviation Hall of Fame, located in the National Agricultural Aviation Museum in Jackson, Mississippi. Although some of the information is limited, including in some cases unknown induction years, it is the best compilation available from The National Agricultural Aviation Museum, the NAAHOF Nominations Board of Directors file archive, the NAA Museum Board of Directors and Mabry Anderson’s book, Low and Slow. Each month, AgAir Update will feature one to several individuals honored in the National Agricultural Aviation’s Hall of Fame as part of the overall celebration to the 100th year anniversary of agricultural aviation. Enjoy reading about the history and the history makers of ag aviation.
INDUCTEE(s): Jimmy and Aubry Finklea YEAR INDUCTED: Unknown Jimmy and Aubry Finklea founded and operated Finklea Brothers Dusting Service in Leland, Mississippi in the late 1920s. They built their own dispensing equipment and installed it in pre-war aircraft. They became the largest dusting firm in existence at that time, operating as many as 50 aircraft. In 1926 Jimmy Finklea supplied the aircraft, a Standard SJ with a Hisso engine, for J.O. Dockery to use applying the first ever calcium arsenate dust on worms in cotton in Leland, Mississippi. At the time, Jimmy Finklea was learning to fly. By 1931, Finklea Brothers was running full blast. Finklea brothers; Jimmy, Aubry, Ray and Buck, operated a large machine shop and garage in Leland. ➤

Although Jimmy never became an accomplished duster pilot, he and brother Aubry realized the potential of ag aviation and in 1929 began buying up all the available aircraft and converting them to dusters. Even in those days, the Finklea equipment was ahead of its time, using sheet aluminum for their spreaders. Their hoppers had smooth operating agitators driven by conventional gear boxes and fans. They also constructed hoppers from sheet aluminum. The operation operated numerous aircraft, but seemed to specialize in the Wacos. Aubry Finklea was a small man, about 5’ 6” tall. He was a master mechanic and during working hours wore a huge pair of baggy overalls. Into the pockets of the overalls he crammed the tools of his trade. A couple of pilots once weighed Aubrey’s overalls to discover they weighed 35 pounds! The Finklea operation had plenty of capital, all earned from the machine shop and flying businesses. Aubrey believed in paying cash and was known for carrying large amounts of it in his overalls or blue serge suit. On one occasion, according to J.O. Dockery, he pulled $40,000 from his pockets to pay for eight Wacos and Travel-Airs! Even the Finklea Brothers had their regulatory problems. As business increased, the firm apparently began using pilots who were not entirely legal. The CAA began hounding the

company and the operation remained in hot water. Finally, in desperation, Jimmy and Aubry made their position clear by erecting a large fence around the airfield with a locked gate. On the gate was hung a sign that read: “Transport Pilots, CAA People, and Dogs Not Allowed!” By 1930 the Finklea operation was the largest in the country. They ground and bagged their own calcium arsenate. A boll weevil infestation flourished with some growers complaining the applications were ineffective. The reality was the material was inferior as in insecticide, but serious business was lost all the same. Accident rates began to climb and after one fatality on a federal airway, the feds began to crack down on the company in an obvious attempt to close it. Finally, the firm came to an end. But, Finklea Brothers Dusting Service should be remembered for advancing the ag aviation industry immeasurably, introducing hundreds of growers to agricultural flying and providing employment to many, many pilots. The company remarkably improved dispensing equipment and today most dry hopper installations are basically of the same design produced by the Finklea brothers. “And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to know how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:17-19). If you put the words wide and long together we see the horizontal love of Jesus Christ for us. If we put the words high and deep together we see the vertical love of Jesus Christ for us. And if we put the horizontal and the vertical together we have got the Cross, and it’s in the Cross that we see the love of Jesus Christ manifested in that He gave Himself for us. Jesus said, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). Words like “I love you” are so easily said, that many times they’re taken for granted. But what if God were to audibly tell you “I love you?” Would you listen? Would you believe Him? What would it take for Him to win your love? A new car? A new home? The promise of security? A future without failure? The religious leaders of Jesus’ day were looking for someone to come and deliver them from the problems they faced. They had a conditional view of Messiah, and Jesus met none of their conditions. They wanted power and recognition, freedom from restraint, and the ability to choose whatever they wanted. In rejecting Jesus Christ they didn’t get deliverance from the Roman government, and weren’t delivered from their sorrows. The physical makeup of the world has changed considerably since Jesus walked on this earth, but in many ways the spiritual and emotional
climate remains the same as that of Jesus’ day. People are still desiring these same worldly things today, when in actuality, what they really need is a Savior. Without Jesus, there’s no peace, no satisfaction, and no hope for tomorrow. Most of all, there’s no way for sinful man to be reconciled with a Holy God. His death on Calvary’s Cross satisfied God’s demand for every sin of those who trust in Jesus Christ. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Henry Thiessen writes: “The thought is something like this. At first God and man stood face to face with each other in perfect harmony. In sinning, Adam turned his back upon God . . . Christ’s death has satisfied the demands of God and now God has again turned His face toward man. It remains for man to turn around and face God. Since God has been reconciled by the death of his Son, man is now entreated to be reconciled to God.” “For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross” (Colossians 1:1920). Paul wrote to the Romans, “At just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:6-8). It was the eternal purpose of God, even before He created the heavens and the earth, to demonstrate

His supreme love to humanity. He demonstrated His love to us and proved it in one supreme action, and that’s in the offering of His Son as a sacrifice for our sins. Whenever God wants to assure humanity of His love He always points to the Cross, it was there that God’s love was manifested for us. I can look at the Cross and I can know that He loves me! Satan and his demonic horde are constantly trying to get us to challenge God’s love for us by the problems that come into our lives. Telling us in our minds that if God really loves us then why is He allowing all these problems to come into our life; why did God allow these things to happen? But whenever we’re prone to doubt God’s love for us, all we have to do is look at the Cross, and there our hearts are assured that God loves us supremely. “This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:9-10). It wasn’t our goodness that caused God to give us a way to spend eternity with Him—it was God’s love that did it all! The Bible says, “At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by His grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life” (Titus 3:3-7). The psalmist wrote, “O God, we meditate on your unfailing love” (Psalm 48:9). Paul acknowledges that God’s love is beyond the human intellect, but if we will meditate on God’s love, by the power of the Holy Spirit we can begin to comprehend the greatness of God’s love for us. “If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all” (Romans 8:31-32). Eternity with God, or with Satan in the lake of fire, it’s our choice. “God is love” (1 John 4:8).

NTSB Identification: WPR20CA171 Date: June 4, 2020, Location: Murphy, Idaho Aircraft: Enstrom 480 Injuries: Minor Pilot left truck with spray load and spot spaying Whitetop weeds down draw from truck. Had some trees coming up so stopped spraying and went up in sky about 75’-80’ to get away from trees. The power line came out of the back side of trees and pilot didn’t see them. Next power pol on Northside away from trees was about 1/4 mile away and pilot didn’t see it because it was on higher ground. Pilot saw power lines at about 20-30 feet away and didn’t have time to clear them. Pilot hit both lines and they took out control of helicopter. Took out tail rotor and helicopters started slow spin into ground. Pilot stated he should have flown area more before spray run to know power lines locations.
NTSB Identification: CEN20CA316 Date: 7/27/2020 Location: Hebron, NE Aircraft: Robinson R44 Injuries: Minor Pilot stated all started normally. After takeoff the low rotor RPM horn and light activated. He attempted to recover RPM but was unable. He entered an autorotation but was too low to recover RPM to suffiecent level. Contaminated fuel from an unfiltered tank was used and the engine was able to produce enough power to maintain RPM.

NTSB Identification: ENG20LA046 Date: September 28, 2020, Location: Donalsonville, GA Aircraft: Thrush S2R-H80 Injuries: None On September 28, 2020, about 1630 eastern daylight time (EDT), a Thrush S2R-H80 was involved in an incident approximately 7 miles northwest of Donalsonville Municipal Airport (17J), Donalsonville, Georgia. The pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight. According to the pilot, he departed 17J at 1600 EDT with 350 gallons of pesticide to spray peanut fields. While maneuvering to re-enter a field, he reported that the “engine came apart” and he force landed the airplane in the peanut field. During landing, the landing gear sunk into the wet field and the airplane nosed over. The pilot reported that there was no damage to the airframe, but he observed a hole in the turbine engine case and nacelle consistent with an uncontained engine failure and propeller blade damage. The airplane was recovered, and the engine was removed and shipped to the manufacturer for examination.
NTSB Identification: CEN21LA072 Date: December 1, 2020, Location: Elton, LA Aircraft: Grumman G164 Injuries: None On December 1, 2020, about 1430 central standard time, a Grumman G164 airplane was substantially damaged when
it was involved in an accident near Elton, Louisiana. The commercial pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight. According to the pilot, the airplane contained a full load of fertilizer and departed from the local grass strip. Shortly after takeoff, the engine began operating “rough”, and the airplane was unable to maintain a positive rate of climb. The engine continued to not produce expected power, and the pilot needed to execute a forced landing. The airplane landed in a muddy field about ¼ mile from the grass strip, nosed over, and came to rest inverted. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the vertical stabilizer and rudder.

Engine Overhaul Services (EOS), strategically headquartered in the Miami suburb of Sweetwater, Florida got its start from a growing demand for specialty turbine engine repair and overhaul shops, specifically the PT6A, that put customer service and craftsmanship at the forefront of their business models. The company’s mission is to always keep safety and integrity at the forefront of everything it does. Jose A. Bergouignan, Jr. and George Betancourt set out to do just that after a happenstance meeting in the mid-1980s. Both men were working at a large engine shop in the area, focusing on PT6A and PT6T TwinPac engines and combining gearboxes until they realized the need for a shop that specializes in the work they were doing on a broader scale.
Jose left the Marine Corps as a crew chief in 1986. He holds an A&P license with over 38 years of experience in aviation, as well as associate and Bachelor Degrees in Aviation. He worked with Dallas Airmotive for seven years on PT6A20 thru PT6A-67 engine models. He also worked with Woodgroup Turbopower for five years that included the PT6T-3/3B/6 model engines and combining gearboxes. George holds an A&P license with over 35 years of experience in aviation on PT6A and PT6T engines. He has an Associate’s Degree in Aviation Management. He also was employed at Dallas Airmotive/Airwork for 14 years working on PT6A-20 thru PT6A-42 engine models and Woodgroup Turbopower for four years working

on PT6T-3/3B engine models. Jose and George met each other while working at Airmotive/Airworks Miami operation. The pair were focused on the PT6A, PT6T and TwinPac and after both simultaneously left their jobs in 2000, they started EOS to meet the needs of PT6 operators. After a lengthy process, in 2002 EOS became an FAA Repair Station. This allowed George and Jose to forge ahead with their business expansion. EOS started out in an 1,100 sq. ft. facility that was quickly upgraded to a 5,000 sq. ft. to satisfy their customer base. They have been at their current 8,000 Sq. ft. location since 2017. Moving to the larger facility also broadened the company’s focus on the PT6 series of turbine engines. A dedicated test cell was added, the only one of its kind. The test cell is housed inside a 45-foot modular container, complete with a new 2,400 Horsepower Dyno. This arrangement gives EOS unparalleled ability to diagnose and repair PT6 engine problems, as well as test and certify their overhauls and repairs. Once the company started supporting the PT6A engine, from the -20 to the -68 series, more employees were needed to accommodate the increased work orders for these engines. The additional manpower and equipment allowed EOS to repair specific parts of the engine, instead of a blanket replacement of parts. They also have a dedicated team of field service representatives to handle AOG situations. As part of EOS’s many services, a condition report with digital photographs is included with
the work. This allows EOS to stay in constant contact with its customers, updating through the entire engine overhaul or repair process. Progress updates are given after the dimensional, visual and non-destructive testing phases of the overhaul or repair process is completed. These updates require customer approval before proceeding with the work. EOS’s AOG 24-hour field services include engine troubleshooting, removal and replacement. Hot sections inspections, torque calibration and starter gear carbon seal replacement, along with many other services. EOS was awarded its EASA certification in 2015. The company also holds a Chilean Foreign Manufacturer’s Maintenance Facility (repair station) for the PT6A series engine. Additionally, EOS holds an Ecuadorian certification for overhaul and repair of the PT6A series engines. The EOS service area extends from throughout the U.S. into Guatemala, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru and Mexico. Ten employees make up the team with an additional three U.S. field service representatives. Engine Overhaul Services is at the forefront of specialty engine shops and their location in southern Florida makes them ideal to service customers not only in the U.S., but in the Southern Hemisphere as well. PT6A-41PT6A-41 850 SHP Thrush. N2249U, has been completely rebuilt from the spinner to the end of the rudder. We put the fuselage in our jig and replaced all the tubing from the cockpit back and upgraded to the later stronger longeron sizes. We installed all the factory beef up kits to the forward fuselage. We rebuilt the wings and installed new spar caps, rebuilt the factory metal tail, made new fuselage side panels and installed with crosspoint s.s. fasteners, we painted the aircraft with high solids Alumigrip polyurethane paint, we replaced windows, we installed a dropped stainless spray system we installed a cool seat with new covers and a Hooker harness, We installed the Cascade front end conversion kit with the 14” longer mount, we installed the MVP50T glass panel in the new upper center instrument panel, we installed a new Dyna Nav Vektor Max GPS, we installed a new KAWAK throttle quadrant, it has a radio and Harbour air conditioning, it has vortex generators, 192 gallon fuel capacity with bottom loading, it has nav/strobe/landing and taxi lights, and a 525 gal hopper. The engine is a King Air takeoff with approximately 4000 hours since P&W factory overhaul and 10 hours since hot section and test cell run. The High Performance 4 bladed Hartzell prop has 10 hours since new. The aircraft is fast, hauls a full hopper load, gets off the ground quickly, turns extremely well, and is a delight to fly. It should out perform an AT-502XP. We have over $700,000 USD in the aircraft, and we are asking $650,000 USD with a $2500 allowance for spray nozzles. We will entertain reasonable offers.
