FROM THE COCKPIT

Bill Lavender bill@agairupdate.com

So Long 2023! Another year has passed, and 2023 is coming to an end. A lot has happened, but I still regret seeing it end. I have become notably less active with AgAir Update after nearly 40 years. However, I keep hanging in there, offering advice to my son Graham, who purchased the business a couple of years ago, and writing these editorials. I will still travel to the Ag Aviation Expo and some state and regional conventions to see everyone. Semi-retirement is not so bad. I have more time to fish and smell the roses. The next big thing will be the NAAA’s Ag Aviation Expo in Palm Springs, California, December 3-7. Graham and I, along with the AgAir Update team, will be attending. I hope you will stop by the AgAir Update booth to say "Hello" and catch up on the latest happenings with you. For the latest news about the expo and convention, refer to the 2023 Navigator print and online magazine, which you should have received by now. This stand-alone magazine is filled with expo and convention happenings, along with information from exhibitors and news about their products and services.

I do not consider it a good year as far as fatalities in ag aviation are concerned. With at least 12 fatalities, that is a dreadful number. Not only have we lost 12 good pilots, but the effect this has on the families is devastating. No matter how hard the industry tries to minimize fatalities, they still occur. This could reflect the type of season, whether it is busy or happening in a short time window. It could be several factors. Regardless, it is not something that should be accepted. Efforts that have been implemented should continue with an ongoing effort to find more ways to reduce accidents. No accidents, no fatalities. Is that obtainable? I'm not sure, but I think we can strive for it. Collisions with obstacles, notably wires, seem to be a prevailing factor. If you missed the Wire Course this year, don't miss it next year. Five hundred hours or 5,000 hours, no one is immune, and we all can keep learning. I trust everyone will have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Until next year,

One good thing about having the Ag Aviation Expo in Palm Springs is the weather. It should not be too hot or too cold. And I seriously doubt rain will be much of a factor. After all, Palm Springs is in a desert. I am looking forward to visiting the area. It has been several years since the last time I was there.

Highlights from the 2022 Ag Aviation Expo

Traditionally, the December issue of AgAir Update takes a retrospective look at the year’s articles and provides a quick summary and opportunity to revisit the articles via QR code. This year is no different. To read the full articles, simply scan the QR code with your smartphone. The January 2023 issue was all about the 2022 Ag Aviation Expo, held in Knoxville, Tennessee. The issue was packed with photo collages of the world’s largest ag aviation convention. Even with the rain, Knoxville proved to be an excellent venue for the show.

The February 2023 issue featured the first article about aerial application in the Middle East to appear in AgAir Update. In October of 2022, AgAir Update and Eagle Vistas traveled to Saudi Arabia after being invited by Sharq Aerospace Industries, the region’s leading provider of aerial application services. The visit was a whirlwind tour of the expansive and developing aerial spraying operations that are the vision of Mansour N. AlSharif, an engineer and accomplished businessman. Mansour holds Master’s Degrees in Engineering, Business Administration and Finance and Graduate Certificates in Aviation Law, Airline Safety Management and Aeronautics. Mansour has an extensive history in aviation management and was the driving force that allowed Sharq Aerospace to establish a strengthened and modernized aerial spraying operation in the country with the Saudi Arabian Government to achieve long-term sustained efficiency. 12 | agairupdate.com

GOOD AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE HOW HIGH ARE SERIAL NO. | YOU FLYING? | 1000 AT-802 IS GOOD BUSINESS

Volume 40, Number 3 MARCH 2023

March 2023 featured the history-making 1000th AT-802. Serial Number 1000 was sold to the Moacir Smaniotto Group (GMS), which has been farming in Mato Grosso, Brazil, for over 40 years, covering the cities of Sorriso, Lucas do Rio Verde and Nova Mutum. With its four highly productive farms and two large warehouses, GMS has massive investments in cuttingedge technology, both in the field and after harvest, resulting in improved productivity crop after crop. With more than 200 employees, their activities are guided by sustainability, combining environmental preservation, strict financial control, and social action with workers and the communities where they operate. AeroGlobo, a Lane Aviation dealer, sold the 1000th AT-802. HOW HIGH ARE YOU 30 YEARS AGO: AAU EVALUATES INTRODUCING FLYING? PART II | SERIAL NUMBER 1 AT-802 | THE ACCESSORIES Volume 41, Number 4 APRIL 2023

The April 2023 issue championed the implementation of C-PAASS, the first professional certification program for aerial applicators. After many years of development, the NAAA and NAAREF officially launched their professional certification for the future of agricultural aviation, the Certified-Professional Aerial Applicator Safety Steward (C-PAASS) program, to serve as the industry’s flagship certification and as a roadmap for the pursuit of the best educational opportunities currently available. While by no means a requirement, this voluntary program allows those aerial applicators who strive to constantly educate themselves to better their safety and application quality to be recognized for their efforts. Secondarily, the certification can signal to customers, regulators, and others outside the industry their commitment to professionalism.

The May 2023 issue took us back down to South America to visit Santa Vitória Aviação Agrícola, who started like most operations do: with two friends who partnered up, bought an ag plane, and started working hard. In this case, Enio Strapação De Cezere, an ag pilot, graduated from the Escola de Aviação Civil do Aeroclube do Rio Grande do Sul CAVAG in 1994, who founded Santa Vitória in 2005 with another partner, also an ag pilot. In its second year, Ingomar Storch, a very experienced loader working for the company, bought the other partner’s share, who then left to fly helicopters for a government agency. De Cezere and Ingomar had already worked for other operators in the Santa Vitória do Palmar region, a small town in the southernmost tip of Brazil surrounded by rice fields. Today, Santa Vitória Aviação Agrícola’s fleet is standardized with the Ipanema, with five EMB202 burning ethanol and one EMB-201A that still uses avgas.

FROST FLYING SERVICE: Continued Growth

June 2023 highlighted Air Tractor dealer Frost Flying Service. Jack Frost, who started in agricultural aviation in 1973, became an Air Tractor dealer in 1995, serving the South-Central U.S. Over two decades, Frost Flying became a leading Air Tractor dealer and offered aerial application services. In 2018, they sold the aerial application division to focus on the Air Tractor dealership and insurance services, partnering in 2021 with outside agents to handle increased insurance demands. With an in-house financing division tailored for aerial applicators, Garrett’s finance degree further enhanced customer support. In 2021, Garrett became the sole owner, focusing on Air Tractor sales, service, and support. The company’s growth extends to the South American market. Garrett continues to lead Frost Flying Service, maintaining the business’s legacy and commitment to customer satisfaction.

The July 2023 issue featured third-generation operator Reed Keahey from Columbia, Louisiana. For as long as he can remember, airplanes and ag aviation have been a mainstay in Reed Keahey’s life. As the thirdgeneration owner of Keahey Flying Service, Reed continues protecting some of the same fields his father and grandfather have done since the mid1960s. Keahey Flying Service was started in 1964 by Jack Keahey, Reed’s grandfather, at a small hangar and grass strip just north of Columbia, LA. Jack flew Pawnees and Ag-Cats and mentored his son, Drew, in the business until he ultimately took over in 1990, allowing Jack to focus on his farming operation. 2024 will be the company’s 60th year in business, now with Reed at the helm.

August 2023 highlighted the new ag pilot training program in Mississippi. The Mississippi Aerial Applicator Association (MAAA), the National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA), and farmers nationwide turned to Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi for assistance in combating the potential shortage of qualified ag pilots. After numerous meetings, studies, and strategic analyses, Senator Hyde-Smith commissioned the Commercial Aviation Department at Delta State University to develop a workforce development plan in the Mississippi Delta to address the shortage of ag pilots. In response to this call, a collaboration was formed between the director of flight operations at Delta State University, Brad MacNealy, a Mississippi ag aviation operator and farmer, Ike Brunetti, and a Workforce Development Consultant, Pam Meeks. Together, they formalized an agriculture flight training plan and presented it to Senator Hyde-Smith for consideration. Their proposal led to passing legislation granting a two million dollar grant to establish an Aerial Applicator Pathway for training Ag pilots at Delta State University.

September 2023 brought AgAir Update back north to Canada and Yorkton Aircraft Service and the delivery of the first P2 Thrush. In 2012, five turbine-powered Thrushes called Canada home. By the end of July 2023, that number had increased to 55! When Yorkton Aircraft Service embarked on their journey to become a Thrush Dealer in 2012, they set out “to build a Thrush Nation, one plane at a time.” Yorkton Aircraft Service has sold 27 aircraft; another 23 Thrush, owned by about 20 operators, have entered the country.

October 2023 was another first for an AgAir Update issue. With the social media channels erupting with photos, publishing the best of the best was only fitting. Over the year, over 1,000 photos were submitted to AAU’s social channels, and combined, the AAU social media reach, including Facebook and Instagram, ran into the millions, showcasing ag aviation to many that may not otherwise be exposed to the industry. October became “The Photo Issue” and featured spectacular ag aviation photography from many talented photographers worldwide.

February – How High Are You Flying Part I Many factors affect aircraft performance, and knowing the total of these effects ahead of time is good. These effects can be very significant in terms of decreased aircraft performance in engine power, propellor thrust, and the amount of lift available from the wings. Knowing how these dictate safe load size and climb performance ensures the only surprises you get are pleasant ones.

March – How High Are You Flying Part II January – First Year in the Saddle This column details the route followed by a novice aerial applicator from Saskatchewan. From building time in a taildragger to taking a comprehensive ag aviation course and delivering actual loads, Jeremy Knibbs journey in becoming proficient on the aircraft and nav system will be of great interest to those interested in becoming an ag pilot, as well as bringing back memories of early training for those who have been in the industry from some time. 20 | agairupdate.com

Knowing the density altitude where you are operating is important because it provides an essential heads-up on how your aircraft will perform under present atmospheric conditions, covering factors such as takeoff roll, rate of climb and angle of climb that are handy to know to stay out of trouble. We all know from practical experience that as temperatures rise, aircraft performance drops. The key here is to understand how much performance decreases ahead of time and how to adjust operations to deal with that decrease. ➤

April – It’s a Judgement Call Pilots with good judgement tend to make good decisions. Pilots with poor judgement tend to make poor decisions. Sound judgement sets the foundation for making good decisions, whatever the situation. But how do you go about developing sound judgment? This column covers a wide range of answers from basic education to critically important and accurate self-assessment.

It’s often not what we know that gets us into trouble. It’s what we don’t know that can get our attention. Regardless of experience level with aerial applications, many such situations can provide unwelcome surprises. A telephone wire suddenly appeared ‘out of nowhere.’ A violent gust on short final. The challenges are many, but by staying alert and strictly adhering to safe flight principles, you can eliminate or at least minimize the effect of such ‘surprises’ that can make for a bad day at the office.

Safety July – Those Pesky Inversions May – Safety – an Annual Commitment Part and parcel of preparing for a new season is an annual recommitment to putting safety on the ground and in the air as your operation’s number one priority. The question then becomes how to make the upcoming season safer than the completed one. This article has some suggestions you can use to add to your existing safety programs. 22 | agairupdate.com

Sometimes, it seems as if Mother Nature is in a bad mood, trying to sabotage all efforts by ag pilots to get the job done. One of the most insidious is atmospheric inversions. This article provides a refresher on the causes and consequences of inversions and how to anticipate and recognize situations conducive to the formation of inversions. If the smoke is hanging, hang up the spurs. While it is very tempting to do “just one last trip,” damaging your crop through off-site drift is one thing. Hurting others is just not worth the risk. ➤

October – What’s the Big Hurry One of the first things a novice aviator is taught is to develop good habits (such as pre-flight walkarounds) that will help keep you out of the doghouse through careless acts, moments of forgetfulness, or just plain oversight. This article covers two striking incidents that illustrate the hazards of rushing things and the need to adhere to standardized procedures in all phases of flight, from taxi to takeoff to landing.

August – Sheriff Newton’s Jail This article covers Isaac Newton’s Laws of Motion, which govern how we calculate almost everything we see in daily life involving moving objects (cars, aircraft, spaceships, ocean liners, satellites, etc.). Together, they accurately predict how performance varies with weight, something you’ll want to know in detail before you go trundling down the strip with a full load on a hot day.

November – Dealing with Emergencies In deciding to go flying, we implicitly accept some level of risk. Part and parcel of the aerial application industry is learning how to successfully deal with critical emergencies, where success can be a lifesaver. Failure can mean a terrible day at the office. This article provides some reminders, suggestions, and tips to help you stay cool when the heat is turned up, and to keep your protective instincts in full readiness the next time you go flying.

September – If You Don’t Know, You Don’t Go Successful ag flying is not so much dependent upon precise aircraft handling as it is in making safe and effective decisions from start-up to shutdown. Taking care of things before they go wrong is cheaper and safer than dealing with an accident or incident. If you are unsure of the weather, the aircraft, or your physical and mental well-being, you don’t go; if you don’t know, you don’t go. 24 | agairupdate.com

December – Looking Ahead In summarizing the content of the first eleven issues of 2023, the first three critically important principles in ag flying are safety, safety, and safety. No distractions, substitutions, or alternatives are allowed anytime, for any reason. Fly safe! And to all, Merry Christmas, a healthy and happy New Year, and all the best in 2024!

SPREADING THE FACTS Michelle Miller - michelle@thefarmbabe.com

Christmas Tree O’ Christmas Tree! Is it true that more people are no longer purchasing live trees for the holidays? Not necessarily. While some people may have given up on the live Christmas tree, it is still a thriving business. According to the National Christmas Tree Association, there are approximately 25-30 million real Christmas trees sold every year in the United States. It takes about 6-8 years for a tree to reach a marketable height, so many more trees are planted and growing now; in fact, about 350 million Christmas trees are waiting for a future harvest. Christmas trees are grown in all 50 states and Canada! However, the species and varieties will differ, of course, based on where they are grown. It takes about 350,000 acres of land and 15,000 farms to ensure we get this 26 | agairupdate.com

holiday delight each year. For every tree harvested, one to three seedlings are planted to guarantee future harvests. Oregon, North Carolina, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Washington are the top Christmas tree-producing states. These farms and large tracts of green space are essential to the ecology and environment. Christmas trees can be dated back to 1510 in Riga, Latvia and were common in parts of Europe in the 1600s & 1700s. In 1851, the commercial sales of Christmas trees began in the United States, but the first “Christmas tree farm” wasn’t started until 1901! More than 16 common varieties of Christmas trees are grown worldwide. Typically, these trees are fir, pine, cedar, spruce, or cypress varieties, with fir trees having the most available types. ➤

Once a tree is planted, it can take a long time before it is ready for harvest. Some species may take over 10 years, but the average is around seven years before it reaches a marketable height. Once a tree gets to be 3 or 4 feet tall, it must be shaped each year so it grows in the desirable triangular shape. This process is called shearing, where a worker will trim the tree of excess branches and groom it into the shape it needs to be. Real trees are an important holiday tradition for many reasons. Like the commercial timber industry, continually harvesting and planting trees is good for the environment. It provides a habitat for many species in which other plants may not thrive, absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, releases oxygen into the atmosphere, and preserves green space across the U.S. Real trees are a recyclable and renewable resource as this year’s trees are turned into mulch, and even used as animal enrichment in zoos! Meanwhile, millions of new seedlings are planted yearly to continue the tradition. Acquiring a Christmas tree each year can be a great family tradition. Whether you visit a pre-cut lot to nab the perfect tree or make an experience out of it and cut your own down, it can be a fun experience with your family! Decorating

the tree together is another way to enjoy the magic of the holiday season with those you love. I encourage you to try out a real Christmas tree and see how amazing it can be! (Plus, they smell so good!) Learn more about commercial Christmas Tree production from the National Christmas Tree Association.

Oxidization & Single Stage Paint: Causes, Effects, and Restoration Techniques This article will dive into the specific realm of single-stage paint. Single-stage paint is a type that combines the color and protective clear coat in one layer. Understanding the causes, effects, and restoration techniques specific to singlestage paint oxidization will enable you to better care for and maintain your aircraft paintwork.

Definition of Single Stage Paint and Oxidization: Single-stage paint is a type of paint that combines the base color and protective clear coat into one layer. Oxidization in single-stage paint occurs when the transparent coat layer breaks down due to exposure to environmental factors, leading to a range of issues that affect the paint’s appearance and overall quality.

30 | agairupdate.com

Challenges in Single-Stage Paint: •

Ultraviolet Light: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause the clear coat in single-stage paint to degrade, leading to oxidization. Harsh Environmental Conditions: Extreme temperatures, humidity, rain, and contamination in snow can accelerate the breakdown. Lack of Protection: Failure to wax or apply sealant to single-stage paint regularly leaves the surface vulnerable to oxidization. Improper Cleaning: Strong cleaning chemicals like dawn dish soap, heavy-duty truck wash, and degreasers will remove waxes and sealants, exposing the paint. ➤

Signs of Paint Oxidization: • •

• •

Loss of Gloss and Shine: The clearcoat deterioration results in a dull and faded appearance, Chalky Texture: Oxidized paint often feels rough and will become dusty to the touch, indicating the breakdown of the clear coat and increasing surface tension. Faded Color: The color may appear lighter-washed out due to the breakdown of the protective layer. Reduced Protection: Oxidized single-stage paint leaves the underlying layers vulnerable to further damage from UV rays, environmental contaminants, and physical abrasions.

Restoration Techniques for Single-Stage Paint Oxidization: 1. Thorough Cleaning: Begin by washing and decontaminating the paint surface to remove dirt, grime, and any loose particles that may further damage the paint with abrasion. After washing, the clay bar may be used with specific wash soaps in detail spray formulation to remove surface contamination. We suggest medium-grade clay towels as they are generally larger, more durable, and have fabric on the back for wiping/ wetting the surface.

2. Paint Correction: Use an abrasive compound or polish to remove the oxidized layer, restoring the paint’s shine and color. Many advances have been made in compounds, increasing gloss and shine. If done correctly, this process will provide the best surface for adhesion with the protection of sealant and wax or ceramic coating. This is one of the most critical factors in protecting single-stage paint. Being too aggressive and using improper polishing methods may permanently damage the paint. While not polishing enough will leave contamination and oxidation on the surface, vastly degrading the ability to protect the surface. 3. Ongoing Maintenance: Regularly washing the aircraft is the best procedure/care for the paint and substrate. ➤

FBI-DHS Announce Hamas-Israel War Has Increased Threat of Terrorist Attacks on U.S. Soil; Make Sure Your Operation is Secure In a Fly Safe Message emailed on Monday morning, NAAA alerted the industry that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released a public service announcement to highlight potential terrorist threats in the United States in response to the war in the Middle East. While the level of skill required to operate an agricultural aircraft makes it unlikely that it would be used by terrorists, the aerial application industry must nevertheless remain alert to any and all potential threats. Hostile actors may be interested in large quantities of fuel or chemicals instead of aircraft.

doors and securing your chemicals and fuel. See NAAA’s Ag Aviation Security webpage for more information, including the Airfield Watch Brochure and an article on hidden cutoff switches. Don’t be complacent with security procedures at your ag operation. You may think that because your operation is in a very rural area there’s no possible way someone would consider your site, but that’s exactly why they might choose your operation. Remain vigilant at all times. View the entire Fly Safe message at this QR code:

There are numerous ways to increase the security at your operation. A common and effective solution used by many operators is a video camera system. You can customize the number and location of the cameras, monitor them via the internet, and record footage. Many have the ability to alert you should they detect movement. NAAA Membership Supports Your Business and Career Although NAAA’s main objective is to bring operators, pilots, allied businesses, and industry supporters together to promote and protect the aerial application industry, the value of membership goes far beyond that. Being a member of NAAA means being part of a grassroots community with people who love what they do, who understand the pressures of working from sunrise to sunset, the stress of a job being dependent on weather, and the tension that can occur being away from your family or even working with family. What comes with this unique occupation is a great sense of pride from the people lucky enough to be associated with it. Our members are passionate individuals dedicated to an industry they love. They are first, second and thirdgeneration ag aviators; they are spouses and families who work day-to-day within the operations; they are organizations that support ag operators when timing for parts or supplies is critical. NAAA members are the cream of the crop, and its members’ experiences, enthusiasm and dedication are what really capture the essence of NAAA membership. Ray Newcomb, incoming 2024 NAAA President and operator of JBI Helicopter Services in Pembroke, New Hampshire, stated, “Without the volunteers and the staff, we wouldn’t have an industry. I firmly believe that. When I talk to people that aren’t members, I try to educate them. I say, ‘You know what? I was in your shoes once also. So just join and come to a meeting. I think you’d be appreciative of what they do. These people are doing a great job for our industry.” While you have been busy aiding farmers to produce a safe, affordable, and abundant supply of food, fiber, and bioenergy, NAAA has been busy making sure the low altitude airspace is safe for your aerial application business to operate, as well as ensuring that you have the pesticide products you need to do your job without unnecessary and burdensome restrictions. In 2024, NAAA will ramp up external communications touting the benefits of aerial application to farmers and farm service providers that benefit from it. The law ended the requirement for aerial applicators to obtain waivers from their farmer-customers to qualify for fuel excise tax-relief. In addition, the law enabled aerial applicators relief from federal excise taxes associated with fuels consumed while ferrying to apply to cropland to and from an agricultural application facility. This benefit has saved the industry an additional $68 million from taxes because of NAAA’s hard work to win this victory, but also to keep the tax relief for the industry. NAAA may win a victory, but there is still work to keep victories active and working for the industry. Learn more at AgAviation.org/policy/tax-issues. Monkey Business by Josh Rittenberry Jason Robinson’s life has been deeply rooted in Ag Aviation from the start, all the way back to when his dad would babysit him in the cockpit of an airplane, hopping from airstrip to airstrip. That began a life enriched by the aerial application industry. Jason became a loader for his dad’s 44 | agairupdate.com

operation at age 13. He was a Private Pilot at 17 and flying Commercial at 18. “Ag Schools were scarce at that time,” Jason explains. “I was able to get my initial ratings, then I came back home where my dad started teaching me Ag work.” ➤

But Jason didn’t start out zipping across fields of his native Louisiana right away. “It was crucial to my dad that I be loader first. He always used to say that you’ve got to know the business starting from the ground up.” That humble knowledge was valuable as Jason’s business ventures flourished in adulthood. After a brief stint in the railroad industry, Jason gravitated north to Illinois, where, “by the grace of God,” he says, he secured a pilot position with Holzwarth Flying Service. 46 | agairupdate.com

After a decade of working for Chuck Holzwarth, Jason and business partner TJ Graden established Graden Aviation in Polo, IL. Two years later, Jason acquired an operation in Fairfield, IL, playfully dubbing it Ag Monkey, a company he established in 2015 whose name was inspired by an old saying attributed to his dad, who claimed that he could teach a monkey to fly. Aside from seasonal help, Jason and TJ each have children who are involved as ground crew in their aviation operations. Important to Jason was the fact that this past season, he was able to break in new Ag pilots. ➤

“There was a time when my dad used to say, “Ag pilots are a dime a dozen,” meaning that you can find one on every street corner,” Jason recalls. “People don’t say that anymore. The Ag community is much smaller, and we as pilots and operators have a duty to our industry to get more pilots trained so that what we do doesn’t become a bygone occupation.” Jason sees that, despite hurdles and challenges, the future for Ag Aviation is bright. “As long as good Ag pilots are around and those pilots train other pilots to be good Ag pilots, there will always be room for us all to grow and flourish.” 48 | agairupdate.com

Proposed AD for GE M601 Engines The FAA proposes to supersede airworthiness directive (AD) 2021–13–07, which applies to all GE Aviation Czech s.r.o. (GEAC) (type certificate previously held by WALTER Engine a.s., Walter a.s., and MOTORLET a.s.) Model M601D–11, M601E–11, M601E–11A, M601E– 11AS, M601E–11S, and M601F engines. AD 2021–13– 07 requires recalculating the life of critical parts and, depending on the results of the recalculation, replacing these critical parts. AD 2021–13–07 also requires replacing a certain compressor case. Since the FAA issued AD 2021–13–07, the manufacturer published the airworthiness limitations section (ALS) of the existing engine maintenance manual (EMM), which includes the calculations for the life of critical parts addressed by AD 2021–13–07 and prompted this proposed AD. This proposed AD would continue to require the replacement of a certain centrifugal compressor case. This proposed AD would also include an additional part number as an option for the replacement and would limit the applicability of the proposed AD, as specified in a European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) AD, which is proposed for incorporation by reference (IBR). The FAA is proposing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products. The FAA issued AD 2021–13–07, Amendment 39– 21612 (86 FR 31601, June 15, 2021) (AD 2021– 13–07), for all GEAC Model M601D–11, M601E–11, M601E–11A, M601E–11AS, M601E–11S, and M601F engines. AD 2021–13–07 was prompted by an MCAI originated by EASA, which is the Technical Agent for the Member States of the European Union. EASA issued EASA Emergency AD 2021–0125–E, dated May 7, 2021 (EASA Emergency AD 2021–0125–E) to address an unsafe condition identified as the manufacturer finding

54 | agairupdate.com

errors in the ALS of the existing EMM, including errors in the formula to determine the consumed equivalent flight cycles of critical parts and errors with certain part numbers. The manufacturer also determined that the life limit of a certain compressor case installed on Model M601E engines is not listed in the ALS of the applicable EMM. AD 2021–13–07 requires recalculating the life of critical parts and, depending on the results of the recalculation, replacing critical parts. AD 2021–13–07 also requires replacing a certain compressor case. The FAA issued AD 2021–13–07 to prevent the failure of the engine. This AD was prompted by the manufacturer determining that the life limit of a compressor case having P/N M601–154.61 is not listed in the airworthiness limitations section of the existing engine maintenance manual. The FAA is issuing this AD to prevent the failure of the engine. The unsafe condition, if not addressed, could result in uncontained release of a critical part, damage to the engine, and damage to the airplane. Read the full AD by scanning the QR code below.

CRAYMER’S COUNSEL

Robert Craymer - robertc@covingtonaircraft.com

A Look Back at 2023 We have reached the part of the year where we look back and remember. We think about the past, are thankful for our experiences and look forward to the future. We are busy at the shop trying to get engines completed and prepped for next season. We are combing the countryside, either working on projects or attending events where we can sit down and visit with everyone. For us, the year continues to be busy. Let's look back at some of the items and key points we have covered: The Gas Generator - One of the most common indicators of a gas generator issue is an increase in Ng. When the compressor loses efficiency, it must spin faster to make all the air it needs. You may also see fuel flow and T5 increases corresponding to these issues. The engine is just working harder to produce what you need. My personal maintenance philosophy is to keep things simple and follow a commonsense approach. With that in mind, the first thing that I look

56 | agairupdate.com

at is the air intake. I'm referring to the filtration and inlet screen. I have "fixed" many engine issues by changing the air filter and ensuring the engine inlet screen is clear. Introducing the Accessories - The maintenance schedule for your engine accessories follows engine TBO and is identified in the service bulletin that specifies the time between overhaul and hot section inspection. The actual time frame in the service bulletin is TBO plus 500 hours. You should incorporate this guidance as part of your maintenance program. I always encourage everyone to follow these guidelines as a preventative step. It costs more to have an accessory issue when you need the airplane the most. The Power Section - The power section does precisely that; it takes the air from the gas generator and turns that air into power. Simply stated, the power section comprises a turbine section and a gearbox. Much like the engine's modular design, the power section can be looked at in modules itself. The rearmost subassembly or module is the power turbine. ➤

The Enemy is - When we do a power section disassembly, we visually get the opportunity to see the outside of the RGB rear housing. A gap exists between the power section exhaust duct and the RGB rear housing. Most of the gap is taken up by an insulation blanket. This barrier is important as it protects the oil contained in the power turbine and RGB rear housings from the temperature of the hot gasses being exhausted by the engine. However, a small pocket at the end of the insulation blanket would allow moisture to be held and corrosion to form. There may be several contributing factors to the root cause of the corrosion problems. It's ITT - The T5 system consists of thermocouples, either 8 or 10, that extend into the airstream between the turbines. The thermocouples are connected in parallel with a bus-bar. A wiring harness is connected to the bus-bar and then comes to the outside of the engine. There are testing instructions for the whole system in the maintenance manual. You can test it as a complete unit. You can also split the engine at the C-flange and test the individual components. When advising people on the process, I always start with a check of the ITT gauge. Unscheduled Events, FOD - The first thing I bring up concerning FOD is that the event may be insurable. If an incident cannot be repaired on the wing, contact your insurance company to determine if your event is insurable on your policy. If material, such as stones, ice, etc., goes into the compressor, you must inspect the compressor and determine the next course of action. Part of this inspection requirement is a performance run to ensure the compressor operation has not been compromised. What's in a warranty? - The basic warranty. Pratt & Whitney Canada has a two-part warranty coverage in their enhanced warranty for Ag engines. Just for your information, militaryuse engines have a different warranty. For older Ag engines, the warranty period is the first 1000 engine operating hours 58 | agairupdate.com

from the date of engine shipment. For newer Ag engines, based on serial number, the warranty period is 2500 operating hours or five years, whichever occurs first. Proper Engine Handling - If your engine must be removed and shipped for repair or overhaul, you must follow the guidelines in the engine maintenance manual. Several issues have been caused by mishandling engines and power sections, which have led to some very costly repairs. Is it an inflight shutdown? - I want to discuss here how the PT6A operates and why an actual inflight shutdown is rare. Operationally, you have heard me and others say many times during training classes and discussions that an engine will stay running as long as it has fuel. To be fair, if you are flying around and suddenly the engine rolls back to normal flow, it may feel like it has quit. In most cases, however, it is still running. Thinking back, I have been able to share a lot of information through this opportunity. We have reviewed some of the engine construction. We have looked at how systems work. We have reviewed best practices. Hopefully, these things and whatever topics we discuss in the future will be helpful. Many folks have told me that they read the articles here. I hope they continue to be beneficial and educational. I am thankful for this experience and look forward to the future! Robert Craymer has worked on PT6A engines and PT6Apowered aircraft for the past three decades, including the last 25+ years at Covington Aircraft. As a licensed A&P mechanic, Robert has held every job in an engine overhaul shop and has been an instructor of PT6A Maintenance and Familiarization courses for pilots and mechanics. A WING AND A PRAYER

Carlin Lawrence carlin@agairupdate.com

There Will Be No Earthly Religious Organizations In God’s Heaven Jesus said, “I will build My church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it…My kingdom is not of this world” (Matthew 16:18; John 18:36). The church of Jesus Christ is not an earthly or worldly organization. Jesus’ church is a living body of believers who have put their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Earthly religious organizations and church buildings are useful in helping the church fulfill its mission on this earth. But religious organizations and church buildings are man-made and earthly, and have no eternal value in heaven. Too much emphasis placed on earthly religious organizations and church buildings take away from the importance of what Jesus Christ has done for His church. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). Jesus prayed, “That they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me” (John 17:21). “For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:12-13). Early Jewish Christians said, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved” (Acts 15:1). The apostle Paul and Barnabas challenged this, and Peter and James backed them up (Acts 15). God chose Abraham to become the father of the nation of Israel that would bring the Messiah [Jesus Christ] into the world. God’s promise to Abraham was that through His Seed, the Messiah, all of the nations of the world shall be blessed. The Jews took this favored nation status and began to believe that only Jews would be saved by God. The Jewish 60 | agairupdate.com

religious leader’s mistake was that they ignored what the Old Testament said about Gentiles being saved in Isaiah 42:6 and 49:6. The apostle Paul wrote, “Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ. Is Christ divided?” (1 Corinthians 1:12-13). This is like bragging, “I’m a Baptist,” or “I’m a Methodist,” or “I’m Catholic” was that their denomination gave them the power to become a Christian. Paul, Apollos and Cephas (Peter) were used by God in a mighty way, but they had no power to get anyone into God’s heaven, and neither does any of the earthly organizations of Christianity today. God has used many different denominations, churches and ministries to accomplish His purposes for Jesus’ church. It’s the arrogant and divisive spirit within denominations and churches that causes them to divide into cliques which causes many of today’s problems within Jesus’ church! Paul wrote, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor” (1 Corinthians 3:6-8). The natural tendency of humanity is to be self-centered, selfish, prideful, and dominated by our own egos, goals and ideas. “By pride comes nothing but strife” (Proverbs 13:10). Christians are only servants of Jesus Christ; and every Christian has a role to play in Jesus’ plan for His church. We are all completely dependent on the Holy Spirit to produce spiritual fruit within our life. Paul wrote, “For Jesus Christ is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is,

the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Jesus Christ one new man from the two [Jew and Gentile], thus making peace, and that Jesus Christ might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. And Jesus Christ came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. For through Jesus Christ we both [Jew and Gentile] have access by one Spirit to the Father…There is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all” (Ephesians 2:13-18; Colossians 3:11).

Peter wrote, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time” (1 Peter 1:4-7). Our salvation in God’s heaven is completely secure because it is kept by the power of God! There will be no segregation of any type in God’s heaven; ethnic, racial, and social barriers no longer exist. Sectarianism and worldly traditions separate people! “He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him” (1 John 2:10). Love for Jesus Christ and His church builds up Christians! “And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment. Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us” (1 John 3:23-24). Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand” (John 10:27-28). agairupdate.com | 61

REGINA’S PERSPECTIVE

Regina Farmer regina.farmer@chem-man.com

Conventions and Notifications Convention season is well underway; it has been a great few weeks. I have had the chance to reconnect with old friends and have made a fair share of new ones. This convention season has afforded me the opportunity to host several CEU classes for various state licensing requirements. While preparing for those classes and 62 | agairupdate.com

selling new programs, I have learned that several states require post-application notifications and, in some states, even pre-application notifications. Outside of the operators that have our program in the states mentioned before that need these notifications, not as many people utilize this feature or are aware that this feature exists.

I’m proud to know we offer this for the states that require it, but my mind begins to think back to when I was a Chem-Man user. When I managed a flying service in Southeast Arkansas, a lot of our work consisted of liquid and dry applications to rice. The dry applications of rice were made aerially right before the rice was taken to flood to help release the full benefits of pelletized urea for the rice. It was paramount to let our growers know that the application was completed as soon as the plane left the field so that they could begin watering. Sending a text or placing a phone call doesn’t seem like a dificult task, but I can assure you that in the highoctane environment of pre-flood rice season, sometimes a phone call is easier said than done. Inevitably, a text message would slip through the crack somewhere along the way, resulting in a not-so-pleasant phone call. How nice would it have been to click a button and notify the grower, his consultant, and even his farm hands that the application has been completed and that watering could commence? I am pleased to share with you all that the ability to send a pre and post-application notification at the click of a

button is a feature you CAN do with Chem-Man. These notifications can be customizable to display information such as expected date and time, the fields/locations that the application will take place, products to be applied along with rates, EPA numbers of the chemical products, and even some of the label information. The label information you can include in these notifications can be a text, email, or both, including re-entry time, days before harvest, PPE information, and label signal words. I’ve learned that sending the post notification can be an excellent way for a grower to catch an incorrect rate or product before it is applied. The team at ChemMan has received great feedback that the customers/ growers and consultants love receiving pre and post notifications. I encourage you to consider providing that extra level of service to your customers whether you’re a current Chem-Man user or have recently considered implementing Chem-Man into your operation. We are constantly evolving and staying on the leading edge of technology to give you the tools to serve your customers better. If you would like to learn more, please don’t hesitate to reach out, and I would be happy to answer any questions you have.

LOW & SLOW

Mabry I. Anderson An Insider’s History of Agricultural Aviation

The Early Days Down South — Chapter One continued…

Early Regulatory Problems Early in its lifetime, Finklea Brothers began experiencing regulatory problems. Aircraft, licensed by the manufacturer, could be flown by unlicensed pilots as long as they remained off the limited airways of the day. As business increased, the firm apparently began using pilots who were not entirely legal. The CAA began hounding the company and the operation remained in hot water from the standpoint of pilots and certain technical maintenance procedures. Consequently the firm, along with most of the very early operators, considered the CAA more an enemy than a friend. Finally, in desperation, Jimmy and Aubrey made their position clear by erecting a large fence around the field with a locked-gate. On the gate was hung a sign that read: "Transport Pilots, CAA People, and Dogs Not Allowed!" Lee Abide recalls a dodge that was used when an inspector paid a surprise visit and the planes were out 68 | agairupdate.com

flying. "Snooks" would casually climb up on the wing of a grounded Waco and set an empty five gallon can on top of the center section. This was a signal for the pilots returning to the field to land on a farm strip until the coast was clear. When the inspector left, Snooks would talce down the can and the birds would come home to roost. By the late 1930s, the Finklea operation was probably the largest such firm in the country. The company was grinding and bagging its own calcium arsenate, having made a deal with Procter and Gamble in Cincinnati for equipment and raw materials. A plant was set up and the dust produced, but as boll weevil infestation flourished, some farmers began complaining that the dust was ineffective, although it appears that there was nothing actually wrong with the material. This was simply a case of having to use an inherently inferior insecticide. But serious business losses occurred. ➤

Another pioneer service was organized in Louisiana in 1938 when Cecil Smith and Jimmy Yeates bought the Tallulah Airport and formed Smith and Yeates Dusting Company. The firm operated for several years, until World War II. Yeates returned after the war and ran it as Yeates Flying Service, before selling it to R.N. Graves, who changed the name to Graves Flying Service and successfully operated it for many years.

J.O. Dockery at Pardeeville, Wisconsin, standing by Stearman 450 HP plane equipped with Burnham venturi sprayers. Photo courtesy of J.O. Dockery.

In addition, accidents became more frequent, especially among the younger, inexperienced pilots. Two fatalities, one involving pilot Louie Shores, occurred in an area designated as a federal airway and, from then on, federal authorities cracked down hard in an apparent attempt to close the Finklea business. These events, along with other problems that continued to develop and increase, finally brought on the dissolution of the firm. Finklea Brothers Dusting Service had its days of glory and it should be remembered for advancing the industry immeasurably, introducing hundreds of planters to agricultural flying and providing employment to many, many pilots. The company remarkably improved dispensing equipment and today most dry hopper installations are basically identical to those produced by the Finklea Brothers.

Good examples of "secondg eneration" operations were formed by J.O. Dockery and E.O. Champion. Large plantations were scrambling for services of crop dusting aircraft and there was an acute shortage of pilots and equipment during periods of high boll weevil infestation. Near Clarksdale, Mississippi, King and Anderson Planting Company, one of the largest cotton producing farms in the world, prevailed rather easily on J.O. Dockery to set up an operation there, primarily for their own protection. Dockery did just that, opening and maintaining a full-time business, utilizing the small commercial airport at the outskirts of the city. He also maintained an operation in his hometown of Stuttgart, Arkansas. Dockery' s aircraft were Waco 9s, Travel-Airs, Stearman C3Bs, and one famous "Bull" Stearman with a 330 horsepower J69. It was a beautiful monster and would carry 1,000 pounds!

Even more, the firm provided a pilot nucleus that spread the formations of new firms all over the country, especially in Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. Many pilots who worked for Finklea set up their own operations. In Mississippi alone they included J.O. Dockery, Raymond Meeks, Joe Call, Joe "Eaglerock" Ours, Harold Bell,"Andy" Anderson, E.O. Champion, and Jimmy Holsenbeck. Joe Greer, formerly of Delta, also set up a Mississippi operation, as did Wes Gary of Belzoni, all using some Finklea pilots.

Dockery recruited some first-class pilots, including Hugh Mitchell, Edward "Booger Red" Vincill, Barney Root, Art Stauber, and Joe Basso. Booger Red was already a legend in flying circles. Barney Root was also a fine pilot and mechanic. Much later on, Root built up a beautiful Waco ASO in my hangar, installed a hopper and took it to Arkansas to work, only to crash fatally a few days after the season began. Booger Red also crashed fatally in 1961. Many people had wondered about his crippled foot. This occurred when he was working with Dockery and was the result of a crash on August 24, 1936 on the Howard Stovall Farm near Clarksdale. He struck a well-hidden telephone pole and crashed, causing serious injury, including almost severing one foot.

In Louisiana, some commercial dusting firms were developing as early as 1925. That year, at Tallulah, Southern Dusting Company was organized with Eugene Stevens and Arthur Gray as pilots. This company was not entirely successful and its short history was marred by accidents and fatalities. It was terminated in 1929, when Stevens left and entered the military.

Irene Dockery, J.O.'s young wife, was no doubt instrumental in saving Booger's foot. Surgeons at the local hospital were about to amputate it, but she was adamant and demanded that they try to save it! They took her at her word, backed off and patched up the foot and, for the rest of hi's life, Booger walked on that foot, albeit with a slight limp!

70 | agairupdate.com

Dockery's planes worked the Delta around Clarksdale and made trips to other Delta hot spots when the occasion demanded. Dock's favorite aircraft was the "Bull" Stearman. Everyone in the dusting business wanted one. According to Dockery, Aubrey and Jimmy Finklea tried diligently to buy it, but he never would sell. One day, near Moorhead, Mississippi, Dockery hung it up in the top of a tall tree after a partial engine failure and had to climb down and leave it. He immediately telephoned Aubrey Finklea, who bought the airplane while it was still up in the tree! He managed to get it down in one piece and it was soon back flying. Dockery was successful in spreading aircraft work into crops other than cotton. The Grand Prairie area around Stuttgart, Arkansas, was the leading rice producing area in the country and Dockery pioneered the use of aircraft in producing this crop. Although rice may have been seeded by air first in California, Dockery certainly introduced it to the southern rice-growing regions of Arkansas, Louisiana, and perhaps Texas. In a taped interview, Dockery said he did the first successful seeding on the Paul Wollworth Farm near Stuttgart in 1938. Several hundred acres were seeded successfully. Seeding and fertilizing rice by air soon became a common practice through the entire area and remains a staple in the ag flying business, with every phase of rice production done by air except land preparation and harvest. agairupdate.com | 71
