The ability to fly the airplane is one thing, but there’s a plethora of other things that have to be mastered before you can pull the handle, so to speak.

A 6 | agairupdate.com

Recently, a good friend from Idaho, (and a great scholar) made a series of posts on one of the many social media groups floating around explaining the importance of learning the ropes of our business before jumping feet first into the airplane. I read through all of the posts and comments and must commend him for breaking it down and comparing it to a profession most are familiar with. To summarize, obtaining the goal of being an acre-producing, money making agricultural pilot is absolutely going to take more than a year of “working on the ground”. He compared the journey to that of a nursing student with the goal of becoming a nurse anesthetist. The road to becoming a nurse anesthetist takes about 7-8 years. This correlates to a 0 time pilot. A commercial pilot that wants to break into the business would correlate to a nurse already through school. You simply cannot expect to jump into agricultural aviation without having the proper foundation, like you cannot jump into nursing with the proper foundation. The nursing students have thousands of hours of clinical practice in order to take their boards, which correlates to years of study. This is no different than doing your “clinical” practice on the ground. The ability to fly the airplane is one thing, but there’s a plethora of other things that have to be mastered before you can pull the handle, so to speak. Flying the airplane needs to be second nature, because you also have to figure loads, wind, product, obstacles, etc. This doesn’t even take into consideration knowing how to run a business. That’s an entirely different

article. Maybe the author of these posts will put together an in-depth feature for the readers of AAU (hint hint). I commend this individual for talking frankly about the reality of breaking into the business. It’s a tough one, but one of the most rewarding careers anyone can have. Air Tractor recently delivered its 4,000th airplane to operator Mike Rivenbark from North Carolina. The airplane is a brand new 502XP. Mike upgraded from an AT-402. He was featured in the November 2020 issue of AgAir Update, “Dropping Anchor”. This is a phenomenal achievement, and a testament to the strength of our industry and the aircraft manufacturer. The XP was sold by Lane Aviation in Rosenberg, Texas. Watch for an in depth feature on this delivery in an upcoming issue. The season is getting started in the Northern Hemisphere. As I always remind everyone, take your time. Carry an extra couple seconds and an extra 100 feet in your turns, it won’t make a difference at the end of the day, but may make a difference in the rest of your life.

Treating Sugarcane with Ipanemas and Air Tractors by Bill Lavender

The state of São Paulo is known for its vast fields of sugar cane. From the air, it looks like an “ocean” of green during the growing season. There are several successful ag-operations in the region. One of these is Imagem Aviação Agrícola with its primary operations base located at São José do Rio Preto. To service its clients, Imagem has a fleet of seven Air Tractors and six Ipanemas including a new EMB-203 Ipanema that was delivered December 23, 2020. The Ipanemas were bought directly from Embraer, while the first Air Tractor was bought from Aeroglobo and the remaining

six Air Tractors were bought from DP Aviação. The Ipanemas are used for smaller fields. Some growers prefer it over the larger, turbine powered aircraft. The base cost of the new Ipanema was over $2,000,000 reais. Jorge Humberto Morato de Toledo and Rodrigo Fernandes are co-owners of Imagem since the formation of the company in 2000 in São José do Rio Preto with one Ipanema 201A. Rodrigo graduated from CAVAG in Cachoeira do Sul, RS in 1997 and is the chief pilot for the company. Jorge handles the administrative duties of the company and its agronomist, as well as serving as the vice president of SINDAG since 2019. Toledo says, “It is very challenging to serve as an officer for SINDAG. Rodrigo and I are the only ones to manage Imagem as its co-owners. I am not only an owner, but also the agronomist for the company; so I stay busy.” At one point, the company operated seven Ipanemas 202As. In 2010, Imagem bought its first Air Tractor, an AT-502B. Today, the sevenAir Tractor fleet has five AT-502Bs, one AT-402B and one AT-802 with a PT6A-67AG engine. The Ipanema fleet has five EMB-202As and one EMB203 for a total of 13 ag-aircraft. Jorge comments, “During the years of Imagem’s expansion from seven Ipanemas to its current fleet that includes the transition to the Air Tractor, Diego Preussof DP Aviação has been like my righthand person, helping us with this big change.” Imagem is a large company with an infrastructure to match. The company has a fleet of 15 service trucks; one for each aircraft with an additional two service trucks available for either an Air Tractor or Ipanema, as the need arises. Each Air Tractor has an assigned service truck that provides 5,000 liters of Jet A fuel and a 1,000-liter tank for mixing chemicals. The 2018 AT-802 has its own service truck with a 1,000-liter mix tank and an 8,000-liter Jet A fuel tank. The Ipanemas’

service trucks have 500 to 600-liter mix tanks with 2,000-liter alcohol fuel tanks. All the Ipanemas are alcohol powered. The main base of operation is located today at São José do Rio Preto. However, Imagem is moving from this location to about 10 kilometers away due to urban sprawl. A second operations base with the company’s head administration offices is in Monções, which is about 100 kilometers to the west of São José do Rio Preto. This base was formed in 2002. At the Monções base, new operational facilities are being built with a projected completion date of late 2021 or early 2022. A third operational base is in Uberaba, MG, approximately 230 kilometers to the west of São José do Rio Preto. At the São José do Rio Preto base, there is a large catch basin of 200,000 liters for catching rainwater. This water is used to wash equipment. Also, there are Jet A fuel storage tanks with a capacity of 90,000 liters at both São José do Rio Preto and Monções. For fueling the Ipanemas, there is 30,000-liter alcohol capacity at both São José do Rio Preto and Monções bases. The Uberaba base has a Jet A capacity of 30,000 liters

and an alcohol capacity of 20,000 liters. Each base has 15,000-liter water capacity for mixing loads for the aircraft. About 95% of Imagem’s flying is on sugarcane. These crops are delivered to different sugarcane mills in the São José do Rio Preto region. Approximately 50% of Imagem’s clients are from China who own four of the sugarcane mills that are managed by Brazilians. Sugarcane is normally treated using CP nozzles applied at 30-45 liters/ha to control insects, fungi and apply NPK fertilizers, which are about 35% heavier than water (3.5 kg vs 5 kg). The other 5% of crops treated are a diversity of soybeans and cotton in the Uberaba region and eucalyptus. For these crops, Imagem aircraft use Microspin and Microbell atomizers. Eucalyptus treatments for controlling insects are applied at 10 liters/ha. Soybean applications are treated at 20 liters/ha and cotton at one liter/ha. Additionally, the company conducts fire fighting missions in the state of São Paulo. Imagem started firefighting operations in 2014 working for the state of São Paulo and continues to this day. hiring their services to fight cane fires. As much as 70% of these fires are started by disgruntled arsonists. In the past, the AT-502Bs were used for firefighting. However in 2021, the AT-802 outfitted with a Zanoni hydraulic fire gate will be used. Currently, Imagem is on a type of “Call When Needed” contract at a fixed rate per hour. When called, an Imagem aircraft must be on the fire within two hours. Imagem’s outlook is for more aerial firefighting in 2021 and the coming years.

There has been a huge transition from the Ipanema to larger, turbine powered agaircraft like the Air Tractor and Thrush in Brazil. However, there’s also been a significant expansion of aerial applications during this time. Imagem Aviação Agrícola is proof that the Ipanema is still a vital component of Brazilian ag-aviation; having at one time a solitary fleet of seven Ipanemas to today’s fleet of 13 ag-aircraft of which six are Ipanemas for meeting particular clients’ demands.

The Switchback Arrives in Brazil! Roraima, the first Brazilian state overflown by the Switchback!

A 14 | agairupdate.com

In the last edition of AgAir Update, I reported on the third leg of my ferry flight between the USA and Brazil piloting a Thrush Switchback. This edition completes my journey. At 5:30 am local time in Barbados, I was already at the airport, but I was only able to take off until around 6:00 am due to fuel supply logistics. In fact, if there’s anything I could confirm during that flight, it’s how things work differently when comparing some countries. In the United States, things go very well and people are usually very punctual. In places like Barbados, we need an extra dose of time and patience even to deal with simple things. On this Caribbean island, for example, the pilot is practically obliged to pay a person who

provides services, such as calling for supplies, transmitting a flight plan, booking a hotel, etc. Luckily, one of the pilots I met in Puerto Rico gave me the contact of a “handling agent” (a person who does this type of service) and I managed well. Readied plane, documentation and flight plan in order, I departed for the northern borders of South America! It was a perfect day, with a clear sky and the Thrush Switchback, as always, flying smooth and safely. The VHF radio, while in contact with Centro Piarco, displayed a true symphony of accents. Of course, the preferred language is English, but many pilots and controllers communicate in French in this airspace. Even when we use the English ➤

language, it is common for them to greet us with a cordial “bonjour” (“good morning” in French) and then go on speaking in English. In fact, one of the things I love about aviation is this cultural interaction. Later on, after contacting the Georgetown Center, I crossed the sky of Guyana with a very peaceful feeling. I could see some cumulus clouds already developing. But as it was still early, it was nothing that affected my flight. Level at 14,500 feet, I was able to enjoy the view, which no longer had the blue-green tinge of the Caribbean sea, but rather the dense green of the Amazon rainforest. An interesting phenomenon that I was able to observe: the clouds that formed, bordered the rivers, but did not develop over them. This made me think even more about how we should learn from the particularities of each micro climate. Everywhere I went, I could see this climatic diversity and some very interesting weather patterns. Flying on different continents is a class in meteorology. As soon as I crossed the boundary into Brazilian airspace, I had that feeling of being at home. Now, in Portuguese, I called Amazon Center and asked for information about the weather in Manaus. As the amount of cumulonimbus was growing with a

forecast for rain, I decided to land in Boa Vista, in the state of Roraima. On Brazilian soil, after exactly five hours of flight, I waited for the Federal Police inspection, then went straight to lunch. There is nothing to compare with a good dish of rice and beans, especially for those who were born in Brazil, but live abroad.

One of the characteristics that I like most in Thrush aircraft is its stability. After a night of rest, the next day I took an early flight from Boa Vista to Sinope. It took seven hours and 18 minutes of flight time with many cloud formations causing detours. One lesson I learned in Sinope the wind changes quickly! I made the circuit for landing 03 because the windsock was indicating that was the best option. But on short final, I could clearly see the wind had changed and was now a tailwind. The Switchback did not disappoint me as it touched the soil of Mato Grosso flawlessly regardless of the wind. In fact, one of the characteristics that I like most in Thrush aircraft is

INTERNATIONAL

its stability. This is evident both in flight and on the ground. With one more leg of my journey accomplished, I went to the hotel to prepare for the “grand finale” that was planned for the next day. It took me a while to fall asleep, because my anxiety was great. Finally, I succumbed to fatigue and the next day I took off early to complete the last leg: Sinope to Anápolis. It took four hours and six minutes of flight. Another easy leg, but full of expectations! I crossed midfield of the SWNS airport and landed on 25. In Anápolis, a true entourage was waiting for the aircraft and me. The entire Thrush team with whom I had spoken with for days was there to welcome the promising Switchback. It was exciting to be able to meet the faces behind the voices. All those people worked tirelessly so the aircraft and I could arrive safely. I’ve been around the world a lot and I’ve had the opportunity to work with different people. I say with all my heart that Thrush’s teams, both in the USA and in Brazil, are some of the best people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. After meeting everyone, we did a brief photo

and video session to record that historic moment for us all. Later, when the team had dispersed to take care of the paperwork, I was able to have a few moments alone with the aircraft. I touched the wings, stroked the chrome spinner and said quietly: “Thank you for being my companion on this adventure!” There will always be something magical about flying. It is an act of surrender to flight. That Switchback represents some pilot’s dream, hope for the future and the livelihood of a family. I feel immensely proud to be a part of this. I am grateful to everyone who trusted me. I truly hope the Switchback, so special to me and the Thrush team, will be the first of many tol operate both in spraying crops and firefighting! My journey was a great, personal accomplishment for me and one I will always treasure and never forget.

TracMap Debuts the New TML-A GPS Unit The new unit delivers a tablet-based touch screen experience.

A 18 | agairupdate.com

TracMap is launching the new TML-A GPS aviation guidance unit that delivers efficiency and accuracy for jobs in the aerial application industry through cutting-edge touch screen experience. “When TracMap embarked on the journey to build their next generation of GPS guidance for the agricultural aviation industry, we knew we wanted to reimagine the role GPS guidance could play in the pilot’s day,” says Gus Hewitt, Head of Sales at TracMap. Research in the existing marketplace showed room for improvement, and also highlighted that wirestrikes were the second most common reason for an aircraft accidents in New Zealand. The study also concluded that almost 40% of wire collisions the pilots knew the wires existed.

“It was time to re-think how GPS was done, and it was time to talk to the people who would know best - our customers,” Hewitt adds. Brutal honesty is where this product began, hearing countless stories from pilots about the good, the bad and everything in between. “We even had pilots who had punched in another technology provider out of frustration,” describes Hewitt. But from the stories, a clear pattern of desires from the industry started to emerge. “We are on our fourth generation of TracMap GPS,” Aspen Helicopters Founder and VP Rob Scherzinger says. “Their reliability is outstanding but equally important is the service and support that we get from TracMap.” The TML-A was born out of a desire to ➤

Gerald Harrix, TracMap founder and pilot himself, has watched TracMap products develop since 2006 and says TML-A is, “everything a pilot could dream of and more.” This debut product offers increased customer benefits. It encompasses features such as auto brightness, night mode, auto zoom and a first for the industry, pilot profiles. The pilot profiles allow all of a pilot’s settings, from lightbar to hardware buttons to instantly sync across, no matter what aircraft they may be in. “Safety has been another hallmark of this product, leading it to be endorsed by industry regulators as the ‘gold standard’,” according to Hewitt. “The ability for wires and other hazards to be saved universally means if one pilot marks a hazard, it will show up for all other pilots. Not only is there a building database of hazards, the pre-set lightbar warnings will give pilots significant warning in the line of sight, without needing to check a screen to see where something may be.”

The addition of satellite and topographic maps has been added to provide further details to a job and help a pilot prepare for flight paths with a deeper level of knowledge as to where he is heading. “But this wasn’t a product built behind closed doors, TracMap knew it had to be reliable, and that meant time in the field and putting it through every test under the sun, including the sun itself… in our heat tests,” Hewitt outlines. Ultimately, this is a product that’s success will be judged by pilots. “This is why we have been quick to put it through its paces with customers,” Hewitt continues. “In the early stages of this product we have been overwhelmed by the feedback from pilot’s and enjoyed implementing many of the great new ideas that have come up.” TracMap launched its first GPS Guidance System in 2006 in New Zealand and has since expanded globally including North America, the Middle East, South Africa and Australia. It is an exciting new chapter for TracMap, a company that is set to take on the world with a product that is truly ahead of its time, he adds. To learn more, visit: https://tracmap.com

Turbine Conversions, Ltd (TCL) partnered with Zanoni Equipamentos in 2019, the Brazilian leader in spray system production, to represent their line of stainless steel dispersal equipment in North America. “Zanoni Equipamentos is a family run business built on innovative, quality products, it was logical we form a partnership.” commented Bill Hatfield President TCL. “The past 30 years I have brought innovative new options to our ag aviation partners. I was impressed with the manufacturing quality of Zanoni and knew it would be another way we could support our partners in the industry. Mark Grahek, is taking the lead on this new product line. His experience with Hatfield Spraying and Turbine Conversions for the past 20+ years makes him the right man for the job.” Mark Grahek shared, “After speaking with operators at both the 2019 Ag Aviation Expo in Orlando & the 2020 Canadian AAA Convention

in Victoria, British Columbia, there was definitely interest in the Zanoni atomizer. We had tremendous positive feedback from operators that worked the atomizers during the 2020 season for mosquito control in North Carolina and Louisiana. But we wanted some empirical data that supported the testimonies. This data would assist in having the Zanoni atomizer be added as acceptable equipment in the Canadian and American forestry program’s RFQs.” Mark had heard about the wind tunnel at the Pesticide Application Technology Lab (PAT) located at the University of Nebraska North Platte and decided to arrange testing on the atomizers. To obtain data required, Mark reached out to PAT director Dr. Greg Kruger to discuss the possibility of Turbine Conversions testing the Zanoni Atomizer in their wind tunnel. After several conference calls between Dr. Greg Kruger., Lucas Zanoni and Mark Grahek to set up the protocol, arrange for equipment donations (the atomizer being tested

The Pesticide Application Technology Lab (PAT) is one of only 3 facilities in the world with the testing capabilities needed. The development of the PAT lab is due largely to innovations of Dr. Greg Kruger. Dr. Kruger has been the director since 2010. His predecessor, Bob Klein, had a laser set up to measure droplet sizes from 1970’s application research. Dr. Kruger, who claims to be basically a “Farm kid with a license to do research.” (he has a BS from Ohio State and a Masters from Purdue) thought that building a wind tunnel to work with the laser for drift research would increase the potential of the program. Fortunately, at the same time Winfield and Wilbur Ellis were looking to sponsor research programs and liked the wind tunnel concept. When the representatives from Winfield and Wilbur Ellis visited PAT they were shown a building that was built for hog research. After the crash of the pork market in the late 90’s, the unit had become a storage building. They could see through “the collection of stuff” and envision a wind tunnel. In 2011 after fifteen semi loads of “the stuff” was removed and pig sties torn down, the building was ready for the renovations; including heating, cooling, and lights. In early 2012 the facility was assembled and ready to start testing. The PAT team manager, Jeff Golus, supervisor Barbara Vukoja and a group of international graduate students ran a series of tests over a two day period on the Zanoni Atomizer. The main objective was the characterization of Valent Foray 76B with the Zanoni atomizer in high speed wind. ➤

Standard testing is completed with water. “Water is pretty accurate, we don’t see a lot of difference between water and material. But Bt is thick and heavy, affected by humidity, heat, time etc.” comments Dr. Kruger. Different blade angles, VRU settings and different flow settings were also tested. The testing conducted at PAT demonstrated that the Zanoni M14 atomizers offer a safe, reliable and consistent application of Foray 76B. This technology stands as a new option for agricultural aviation contributing to the control of the spruce budworm and gypsy moth in North America, being one of many innovations brought by the Turbine-Zanoni partnership to the aerial spraying industry. Dr. Kruger is well versed in the ag aviation industry and a great ally. Integrating his experiences working with international students and traveling the world sharing his expertise internationally with several visits to Brazil, Dr. Kruger shared, “Think of your nozzle/atomizer as a tool and determine what it has to deliver

(droplet size) and pair with the application that is needed. The goal of the testing is that the tool delivers consistent droplet size and what size of droplet that it delivers. In Brazil one thing you see is that many of the applicators are using atomizers for field crops which is something you don’t see very often in North America. In the application of herbicides - the requirement of a larger droplet size to reduce drift and hit target makes an atomizer not the right tool for the job, which is a demand in field crops in the US. But in the application of fungicides and pesticides the atomizer is an effective tool because they benefit from the smaller droplet dispersal. This is where international cooperation of sharing information between peers is so important.” The PAT conducts a combination of laboratory, greenhouse, and field drift trials along with greenhouse and field efficacy trials to understand how to best maximize efficacy from pesticides while minimizing the unintended effects from those applications. The low-speed wind tunnel is designed to better understand droplet size ➤

and drift potential. The PAT lab has helped educate applicators on making safer applications with less pesticide drift. Early in 2021 Dr. Kruger accepted a position with BASF as North American Agronomist specializing in Digital Agriculture based in Raleigh, North Carolina and is passing the PAT to a new team. Even though he was on his way to his new challenge. Dr. Kruger returned to PAT to assist with the Zanoni Atomizer Study. He has left the PAT with an experienced capable staff so work can continue. Turbine Conversions will be returning to run additional testing later in 2021.

Mabry I. Anderson An Insider’s History of Agricultural Aviation

The Move Westward Entomology Service

Spraying was a brand new ball game.

Significantly, Mercedes Dusting Service was one of the first postwar firms to provide farmers with the services of a trained entomologist. Their entomologist would move with the operation and supply local farmers with updated pest reports on at least a part-time basis. This service more or less set a precedent and, within a short time, a great many operators were supplying this service to their farm accounts. Gradually, this concept was phased out and replaced by custom entomological services that contracted with farmers on a seasonal basis to regularly inspect their crops and recommend treatment. Some men who helped with the success of Mercedes Dusting Service were skilled pioneer pilots like Royce “Roscoe” Norman and Maynard “Andy” Anderson. These men were absolutely superb in their field and a book could be written about their individual exploits! Other expert pilots who followed include Jimmy Lambert, Wesson Allen, Ted Overeyender, and Frank Baker. Wes Allen eventually moved to Mississippi, where he continues to operate a fine unit at Yazoo City.

Price Wars In spite of progress, all was not well in the Texas country. Liquid spraying was rapidly replacing dusting, and the matter of pricing this spraying service became an almost insurmountable problem. Spraying was a brand new ball game. No one really knew how to charge for the service. “Some folks were charging by the gallon,” recalls Jack LeClair, “some were charging by the acre, and some of them seemed to be charging nothing at all!” Price wars sprang up everywhere, especially in the Valley. Texas tempers, never too far from the surface, flared. Hot words were spoken, B 6 | agairupdate.com

— Chapter Three continued…

fisticuffs were prevalent, and the situation rapidly deteriorated. Mysterious aircraft and hangar fires developed and, for a time, the scene looked very dark indeed. Fortunately, clear heads prevailed. Among the calming influences were Charlie McMillan and Bill Kuby. They explored the possibility of the Valley operators working together to solve the pricing problem before it wrecked everyone involved. McMillan instructed his chief pilot, Bill Austin, to order the ingredients and to invite everyone to a party. Austin got on the phone and his invitation went something like this: “Hello Jack, this is Bill Austin. Come on down to our place at Edinburg Friday night for a party. Bring along your tire tools, your shotgun, and anything else you think you might need! We ‘re going to see if we can’t work out this pricing problem.”

A second meeting was set for Bill Kuby’s hangar at Pharr. This meeting was also free of fist fights and some of the pricing muddle was settled. The first meeting was dominated by cautious exploration and making new acquaintances. This was accomplished without bloodshed and a second meeting was set for Bill Kuby’s hangar at Pharr. This meeting was also free of fist fights and some of the pricing muddle was settled. A third meeting was scheduled for Lloyd Nolen’s place at Mercedes to formalize an organization. ➤

The Texas association, along with those in California and Mississippi, pioneered the concept of a unified industry.

An unprecedented early freeze in the Valley in 1951 greatly reduced aerial application activity. As a result, this organizational meeting was well attended. Jack LeClair remembers that even the loaders were present since they had nothing else to do! Attendance was restricted primarily to Valley operators and the Airplane Dusters and Sprayers of the Rio Grande Valley was founded. Officers selected were president Bill Kuby, vice president Ken Medders, and secretary-treasurer Bill Austin. The first slate of directors included Charlie McMillan, Maynard “Spud” Pineck, L.H. Ward, Lloyd Nolen, and Heard Cardin. Ken Medders’ wife Janice wrote the original constitution and bylaws for the organization, which eventually became the prestigious Texas Agricultural Aviation Association. From the beginning, a concentrated effort took place to bring in members from all over the state. Nolen, Medders, Dave Setter, Joe Jones, and others, using their own money and airplanes, flew all over the state, particularly around Pecos, Lubbock, Fort Worth, Houston, and Texarkana, selling the idea of cooperation to the many operators in these heavily farmed communities. They were successful and within a relatively short time the association was represented statewide.

In 1955 the group held its first convention in Galveston and the first man from outside the Valley was elected president: Ralph Crosnoe of Texarkana. In 1955 the group held its first convention in Galveston and the first man from outside the Valley was elected president: Ralph Crosnoe of Texarkana. Since that time, the Texas association has played a prominent part in the progress of agricultural aviation in the state and nationally. Its affairs have been guided by talented men, including Bill Lewis of Alvin, Corley Tedder of Texarkana, James Henley of Alice, Delbert Williams of Dumas, Warren Nichols of Weslaco, B 8 | agairupdate.com

Ray Williams of Wichita Falls, Teb Reddell of El Campo, Clyde Elliott of Harlingen, Jack LeClair of Pharr, George Mitchell of Beaumont, and Harold Hardcastle of Vernon. Mitchell and Hardcastle eventually served as effective presidents of the National Agricultural Aviation Association. The Texas association, along with those in California and Mississippi, pioneered the concept of a unified industry. As a result, most states that were heavily engaged in ag flying followed the lead and organized state associations of their own. They have been most effective in assuring the future of the industry.

California, the Golden State, is a whole new world. From the sun-baked desert lands of the lower Imperial Valley, with towns like Brawley and El Centro, northward across the Salton Sea and on to Bakersfield, Fresno, Salinas, Modesto, Stockton, Lodi, Sacramento, Woodland, Yuba City, and Willows, the incredibly fertile valleys are a dream come true to farmers and ag flyers. Perfectly flat valleys of staggering size, most of them bearing Spanish-sounding names and walled in by towering and majestic mountains, guard the flatland against intruders. But intrude they did! Intrepid farmeradventurers, within the span of less than a century, turned the desert into a garden. Valleys like the great Imperial that borders Mexico, with its 12-month growing season, gradually give way to other equally fertile lands like the fabled San Fernando, the San Joaquin, and the Salinas even further north. There, the year-round growing season yields to to “normal” seasonal changes, but all of these valleys have great fertility and a shortage of rainfall in common. The farmer-intruders addressed the rainfall problem and now the entire area is crisscrossed with the most intricate and effective irrigation system ever devised. Early crop dusters quickly found a home in these fabulous valleys. Their new-found art had a world of its own in which to work, play, and stretch its wings. Among the earliest of these California pioneers was the well-documented team of Allen Rhodes and Livingston Irving, who operated in the late 1920s in the San Joaquin Valley. With their Travel Air 2000s, equipped with OX-5 engines, they worked extensively in this region. ➤

In 1928, according to the American Aviation Historical Society Journal, they were the first to seed rice by air. This they certainly did by 1928, but careful research reveals that this practice may have developed spontaneously in other areas of California at approximately the same time. In fact, it seems highly probable that rice seeding was done on an experimental basis in 1927 by Floyd “Speed” Nolta near Willows, California. Other Californians who were engaged in agricultural flying at a very early date included legendary names such as Phil Murray, Mel Carberry, “Pappy” Dunlap, Charlie “Red” Jensen, Bill Marsh, Ralph Clark, Bob Strief, and the team of Milton Robertson and Britton “Bing” Rey who organized the famous Independent Crop Dusters at San Francisco.

Robertson and his partner “Bing” Rey were a unique team, with Rey apparently handling most of the firm’s business at its San Francisco headquarters. Robertson acted as promoter and field man, continuously marketing the use of aircraft all over northern California, especially in the Fresno area. Robertson made almost daily reports via long, hand-written letters to his partner. George Sanders of Agrinautics in Las Vegas has a journal containing many of these original letters. Most of them are dated in 1933 and 1934, when Robertson was deeply involved in selling a wide range of services to growers near Fresno.

FROM THE FAA

LEO M. HATTRUP, M.D., FEDERAL AIR SURGEON

As Far As The Eye Can See

The FAA strongly encourages all pilots to obtain their best corrected vision.

B 12 | agairupdate.com

Sight is the most important sense we use in aviation. From pre-flight to taxi, and in all aspects of flight, sight is key — especially when it comes to “seeing” and avoiding any risks or conflicts. Visual standards for Class I and II airman medical applicants require having, or correcting to, 20/20 far vision and 20/40 near vision in each eye separately. Class III medical applicants must have or correct to 20/40 vision, near and far. Color vision adequate for the safe performance of aviation duties is necessary for all classes. Pilots who choose an alternate pathway from FAA medical certification can fly using the limitations on their driver’s license. These visual standards can be as low as 20/50 in some states and many have no color vision requirement. Consider the current standards as minimums to ensure safety. Better vision increases the time one has to react. Consider two aircraft five miles apart approaching each other head-on at 125 knots each. The closure speed of 250 knots means they will meet in 72 seconds. Spotting an aircraft head-on from five miles away can be challenging. The cues available at five miles for someone with 20/20 vision are not available until 2½ miles — a closure time of 36 seconds — if your vision is 20/40. How

often do we find ourselves heads-down looking at a map/tablet, checking an approach plate, or programing the GPS? What if the other pilot is also heads down? The big sky theory sounds good, but there are many choke points and no mandated altitude separation at or below 3,000 feet above ground level. Try timing how long it takes you to perform routine cockpit tasks (with a safety pilot, of course). It could be an “eye-opener.” The FAA strongly encourages all pilots to obtain their best corrected vision. We allow use of spectacles or contact lenses in general. However, we do not permit monovision lenses (i.e., one lens corrects near and the other far vision) or contacts that only correct for near vision. Bifocal or multifocal contact lenses are acceptable. We generally permit other surgical corrections, although after monovision surgery you will need a six-month stabilization period before applying for a medical flight test and statement of demonstrated ability. Earlier approval is possible if you wear corrective lenses. So it’s a good idea to discuss any proposed changes to your current (approved) method of correction with your aviation medical examiner (AME) first. Your examiner checks your color vision using

an approved testing device at the time of the examination. Those who do not pass this testing can opt for an operational medical test. This includes correctly identifying the colors on a signal light test and reading a sectional chart. Historically, we considered color vision adequate for aviation if the pilot passed the operational test. However the current aviation environment is much more color rich, which creates challenges for someone with color deficiency. Even if they can interpret the displays, they may take longer to do so and risk is increased. Even if you have been cleared by the FAA, if you do have a color deficiency, try reading a sectional chart in different light conditions and the aircraft color displays on the ground, and then have an instructor check you again in flight. Note that while color deficiency is typically an inherited condition, it can also be caused by certain medications and diseases. There is no cure for a color deficiency. Glasses advertised as a “cure” actually filter out some light wavelengths. They can improve contrast, but we prohibit their use because they can block some colors on a sectional chart and colored displays.

Glasses break and get lost and contacts fall out. Having a backup just might save the day, and your flight. One final thought. If you need glasses or contacts, carry a spare pair. Mabry I. Anderson began flying during World War II. At the war’s end (1946), was co-founder of Mississippi Valley Aircraft Service in Clarksdale, Mississippi. This firm became a leader in the manufacture and sale of spraying and dusting equipment for agricultural aircraft. Also, it was one of the largest custom application firms in the country. Mississippi Valley Aircraft Service (MVAS) built and offered for sale the first satisfactory spraying system for the Stearman aircraft. The Aero Mist-Master system was sold by the hundreds to all states doing ag flying and into many foreign countries as well. MVAS built and sold the patented Instant-Change Unit for Stearmans, which made it possible to switch from dust to spray by merely pulling a lever. These units were sold all over the world. MVAS received the Supplemental Type Certificate for installing 300 hp Lycoming radial engines on Stearman aircraft, designated as the A75L300. Upon selling Mississippi Valley Aircraft Service in 1970, Anderson assumed the position of Executive Director of the Mississippi AAA, a position that he has held until recently upon his retirement. Mabry Anderson was one of the organizers and charter signers of the Mississippi Agricultural Aviation Association in 1956. He served four terms as president of the Association. He was one of the organizers and promoters of the National Agricultural Aviation Association. He received the Honorary Lifetime Membership award from the MsAAA. Saying Goodbye to our Fellow Aviators

Larry James Landry, Sr. 1942 – 2021

Larry’s association with Mid-Continent began in 1971 when he first met Mid-Continent founder and owner Dick Reade at the NAAA Convention in Las Vegas.

B 16 | agairupdate.com

It is with deep sadness that the Mid-Continent family shares the passing of Larry Landry on February 13, 2021. Larry’s association with Mid-Continent began in 1971 when he first met Mid-Continent founder and owner Dick Reade at the NAAA Convention in Las Vegas. After working for Lyon Flying Service in Welsh, LA, Larry became parts manager for Falcon Crest Aviation. Shortly thereafter, Larry was approached by then-MidContinent executive VP, Larry Cookemboo, who proposed a joint operation in Estherwood, LA. Landry Aero opened its doors in May 1993 as a parts division of Mid-Continent, with insurance sales added in 1996. Even though it has always existed as a division of Mid-Continent, the name “Landry Aero” was strategically chosen because the Landry name and reputation remained so closely identifiable with Larry’s existing customer base. Larry Landry was born in Jennings, LA to Evelins Landry and Marie Gary Landry on July 31, 1942. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1960-1964, in the Air Police Canine Corps, and as an interpreter during the Vietnam War. He continued to serve his community as a Boy Scouts Master during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Larry was a devout Roman Catholic, devoted husband, and father. Larry worked for many years in the aviation industry which was his passion, treating all his customers and employees as if they were family. He loved BBQ and cooking for his family, loved watching Saints and LSU football, playing golf, and working out at the gym. Larry’s greatest joy came from the time he was able to spend with all of his family, especially his grandchildren. Larry is survived by his three sons, Larry J. Landry, Jr. (Karen) of Ocean Springs, MS, Lance

Joseph Landry (Carmen) of Scott, LA, Layne Jacy Landry (Rebecca) of Lafayette, LA; his two daughters Margaret Heather Landry Bergren (John) of Welsh, LA, Kamala Caroline Iguess (Kevin) of Welsh, LA; eight grandchildren, Ashley, Derrick, Aidan, Megan, Cain, Jordan, Shelby, and Zoe; and four great grandchildren, Jay, Jaxson, Charles, Jr., and Kingston. Larry was preceded in death by his beloved wife Margaret “Margo” Dunn Gillard Landry, his father Evelins Landry, his mother Marie Gary, step-father Camille Palmer, and one grandson, Christian Rene Dubois. Memorial Services for Larry were held at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Welsh, LA on Friday February 19, 2021. Internment took place at Pine Island Cemetery in Pine Island, LA. Larry will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

What Is Trauma?

Both types of trauma, are generated by a change in an individual’s normal course of physical or mental health

B 18 | agairupdate.com

We understand trauma as an injury that is caused on the organism or on the psychology of a person, causing changes in normal functioning. Trauma can vary in severity, although in most cases the notion of trauma is linked to a wound or injury that requires further treatment, be it physical, moral, emotional or mental. Normally, the field of medicine is differentiated between physical trauma and psychological trauma. Although both types are generated by a change in an individual’s normal course of physical or mental health, the causes, situations or elements responsible for a change, as well as the consequences, can vary widely. When we talk about physical trauma, we refer to a type of injury that directly affects the body at a physical level. Physical trauma can be caused either by blows or by acute injuries. Physical trauma almost always requires some type of medical attention that can imply greater or lesser urgency, complexity and duration. These types of traumas can happen due to accidents or intentional physical attacks. In cases where injuries are serious, police intervention may be required to investigate the cause of the situation. On the other hand, traumas that happen on a psychological level can also involve a deeper severity. In general, psychological trauma is produced from the experience of a painful, distressing or critical experience. It can be the

witness of death of a loved one (in some cases, of an unknown person), suffer some type of abuse, or some situation resulting in near death. Psychological traumas can be much more difficult to cure than physical traumas. This is because selected therapy procedures may not always be the most effective ones. In addition, psychological trauma can completely change an individual’s personality and transform their life into a totally different experience.

Plummer’s Props for PZL Engines

by Bill Lavender WEST HELENA, AR — Nothing can take its toll on an aircraft’s airframe like a vibrating powerplant. In most cases, particularly with piston aircraft, the vibration is a result of a prop out of balance. This imbalance can be from the blades not tracking properly or the weight of one blade different than the others or a combination of these factors. No engine is exempt from the effects of a prop out of balance. Static balancing simply is not good enough. Without dynamically balancing the prop (while the engine is running), you are omitting the internal balance of the engine itself, as well as the effects of the inertia of the rotating propeller. How does all this relate to the Dromader and its huge four-blade propeller? The Dromader is notorious for having a difficult prop to balance and to keep balanced. Far too complex to explain within this text, believe it when told a Dromader prop can be a headache. Coupled with a nine-cylinder radial engine developing 1,000 horsepower and more than 3,500 pounds of thrust, you have a

tremendous amount of stress on the airframe. Fortunately, the Dromader is a well-built aircraft capable of withstanding a lot of stress. Even so, no ag aircraft is built strong enough to take continuous pounding from an out of balance prop. And, no operator wants to go through the headaches and expenses of keeping the Dromader prop balanced. There is a solution to this problem. The solution is an STC from a joint venture between Glenn Holmes and Chummy Plummer, owner of Plummer Arctic Lodges. This is an outfit based in Canada that provides fantastic fishing 125 miles north of the Arctic Circle in Great Bear Lake (if I squeeze a trip out of Glenn and Chummy, I’ll tell you all about it!). In order to transport their clients to this wonderland of great north fishing, Plummer Arctic Lodges uses a DC-3 with the P&W R-1830 and two De Havilland Otters powered by the 1,000 horsepower PZL engine; the same engine and prop combination used by the Dromader. In addition, Plummer Arctic Lodges’ aircraft fleet consist of two Beavers and a Cessna T-206. In partnership with Chummy Plummer, Glenn ➤

B 22 | agairupdate.com

Holmes decided there must be a better way to address the prop problems he was encountering. Glenn has an extensive background flying bush and ag, and is a guru of a PZL mechanic. Having plenty of experience operating the DC-3 with its Hamilton Standard 23E50 with 6477 paddle blades, Chummy felt that if he could mount the Hamilton Standard (H-S) prop to the PZL engine, he would have a perfect match. After two years of testing, Chummy Plummer and Glenn Holmes were satisfied they could obtain the STC for the conversion. After having operated the Otter with the H-S prop and PZL engine in Canada, they knew it would only be a matter of presenting the proper paperwork to Transport Canada before an approval would be issued for the conversion. Once Transport Canada issued its STC for Canada, that STC would be presented to FAA for a U.S. STC. Canada and the U.S. have reciprocity agreements. However, the paperwork required precision strain gauge testing, vibration analysis and flight testing. From these test, the effects of the propeller on the airframe as well as the strain on the propeller blades could be predicted. Who does one hire to have this testing done? One of the best, if not the best, engineering companies in the world for this type of prop analysis is Specialized Testing Service, owned by

Sandy Friezner of Arleta, California, along with Sandy’s son Denis. These two individuals literally travel the world analyzing stress factors, whether it be for a propeller, a submarine or an oil rig. Their services are in high demand and well respected in the aviation community worldwide. If Specialized Testing Service places their stamp of approval on an installation, then it is assured the installation is workable from a stress point of view.

After two years of testing, Chummy Plummer and Glenn Holmes were satisfied they could obtain the STC for the conversion. Admittedly, there aren’t many ag aircraft more strange looking than a Dromader with a threeblade propeller (the H-S 23E50). But, that threeblade prop has a beauty all its own. First, consider the replacement cost of a Dromader’s PZL prop is approximately $11,000. Then, figure at today’s prices, the H-S 23E50-6477 prop fresh overhauled is about $3,500. Next, factor in the time ➤

between overhauls is 1,200 hours or six years for the PZL prop compared to 2,400 hours or 10 years for the H-S prop. There is the one-time charge for the STC estimated at $6,000. Now, the numbers should be telling a story of their own. Operating the H-S prop could be one-fourth the cost of the PZL prop. It is no wonder that Chummy Plummer and Glenn Holmes considered the “DC-3 prop” a good replacement prop. However, the question arises, does the H-S prop perform as well as the PZL prop? The project location was hosted by Darryl Riddell of Riddell’s Flying Service in West Helena, Arkasnas. Darryl negotiated with Beryl Shears of Western Pilot Services in Phoeniz, Arizona to provide the Dromader for evaluation. The evaluation and testing began with Jim Jeffries of Jeffries Airworks dynamically balancing the PZL prop. This assured the best possible readings for the PZL prop and engine. Then, the Friezners started their work by establishing a baseline. They attached a thrust gauge to the tailwheel of the

Dromader and measured the pounds of thrust the PZL prop and engine were capable of producing. They also strategically placed vibration monitors in the cockpit and alongside the fuselage to measure the vibration effects of the propeller. This was done for the factory PZL prop on the 1,000 hp PZL engine. The PZL prop developed 3,530 pounds of thrust at 2,100 rpm and 40 inches of manifold pressure. Next, the PZL prop was replaced with the H-S 23E50-6477 prop. Three strain gauges were placed on a blade of the prop. Using the same power settings as with the PZL prop, the H-S prop developed 3,800 pounds of thrust. This translates into an 8% increase in thrust, approximately a 10 mph increase in airspeed for the Dromader. It was noted the H-S prop being only statically balanced, still measured less vibration at all points than the dynamically balanced PZL prop. Cockpit measured vibration for the PZL prop was .13 ips (technical term for inches per second acceleration). The corrected measurement for the DC-3 prop ➤

according to Jim Jeffries would be approximately .05 ips. This works out to a 75% reduction in vibration; 4-5 times less. While AgAir Update was visiting with Glenn Holmes, Jim and Linda Jeffries and the Friezners, only the H-S 23E50 was run on the Dromader on the ground. The testing continued for the next couple days, with flight test and also testing for the H-S 33D50 and H-S 43D50 props. Glenn Holmes wanted the Friezners to test and evaluate these propellers as well. The H-S 33D50 with the 6571A-O blades are thinner compared to the 6477 paddle blades in the 23E50 hub and is used typically for high altitude flying. However, installed on the Otter, it will reduce the most forward weight of the aircraft by 110 pounds. The H-S 43D50 is the prop the Navy used on its Tracker sub spotter and Fire Cats use for fire fighting. Glenn’s thoughts are, “The Tracker prop is late 1960s technology, compared to 1930s technology for the other two props. We wanted to see if there was a measurable difference”. The lightweight DC-3 propeller, 33D50 with 6571A-O blades, produced about 40 pounds

of thrust less than the PZL propeller. However, the vibration reduction was about the same as experienced with the paddle blade H-S prop. The Tracker prop showed promise, but the testing was not completed due to technical problems and time constraints. Future plans include more work with this propeller. By the time AgAir Update readers read this article, a Canadian STC should have been issued for the conversion of the H-S series of props to PZL 1,000 horsepower engines. An FAA STC should be following shortly. These STCs will apply not only to the M-18 series Dromader, but also to PZL powered Otters and AN-2 aircraft. When the PZL factory showed an interest in the propeller conversion, a patent was applied for to protect the project. Wherever there is a mouse, someone will always come along and build a better mouse trap. This analogy is so very true for people in the ag aviation business; always working to improve on the equipment and techniques they use.

B 28 | agairupdate.com

Last month, there was a celebration of “International Women’s Day”. It made me think about how far our industry has come and how women have played a part in making it what it is today. As a woman vendor, I have never thought twice about being a woman in a male dominated industry. I have always felt like everyone treated me like my uncle, brother or just a great friend. I have always felt like I could drop by any operation in the country and be welcomed. Next year, our company will be celebrating 30 years with our Chem-Man software. It’s kind of funny, but now it seems like all the new pilots are like my kids. Throughout the years, I’ve seen the many roles that women have played to help make their operations work. Sometimes they are wives that are working another job and helping after hours, or women that have quit their jobs to help their husbands with loading, billing and whatever needs to be done. I even had a customer tell me that their daughter helped out from college remotely. We had our first woman president of the NAAA, Brenda Watts, who I’ve admired as a businesswoman for years. She did an outstanding job as president and made me proud. Others have also held officer positions on the NAAA board as well.

I see many women who help out with organizing conventions, donation drives, Athena meetings and much more to help us within our industry. There are women who own their own ag operations and are highly successful at it. I am seeing new women pilots getting on board and that also excites me very much. More women vendors are also coming on board. I love the fact that Deborah Freeman is always helping me out with our marketing and graphics at AgAir Update. She helps organize my ads and articles. I feel AgAir Update is such a tremendous asset to our industry. I recently gave a shout out celebrating women in the industry on the Cropduster sites and had some good responses including Terry Jordan’s response “Lot’s of awesome women in our industry”. I know that we’re all appreciated. I also wanted to give one last shout out to the women in my company. Between our lead developer Cassie, support staff Libby, office manager Amy and lead marketing manager Ashleigh, they are all a tremendous asset to me. I say all this not to underestimate the value of all our good men! We all work together and get the job done. Teamwork is everything! Thanks to everyone for all that you do.

Jesus said, “I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken” (Matthew 12:36). When I hear someone telling a dirty joke, I always remember what the apostle Paul wrote to the Ephesians, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. …Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving (Ephesians 4:29; 5:4). David said, “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer” (Psalm 19:14). The Bible has a lot to say about the careless use of words. Most people think that curse words are the worst words we speak—and they are evil, but I think that the words that are the worst in God’s eyes are the words we use to belittle, put down, denigrate, lie about, and hurt other people. Solomon wrote, “Do not be quick with your mouth,

do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few” (Ecclesiastes 5:2). Sometimes I wonder if we even realize what we’re saying! It’s easy, in a moment of heated emotions, or exchange of words, to say things that we soon regret. I don’t think that any of us are guiltless in this area of our lives. The long-term damage of the words we speak can be devastating for many years into the future. The Bible tells us that the tongue is wicked, deceitful, perverse, filthy, corrupt, flattering, slanderous, gossiping, blasphemous, foolish, boasting, complaining, cursing, contentious, sensual, and vile. Someone has said that it’s good thing that God put our tongue behind a cage of teeth, and walled in by the mouth, or it would be more destructive than it is. The tongue is you in a unique way. It’s a tattletale that tells on the heart and discloses the real person. Not only that, but the misuse of the tongue is perhaps the easiest way to sin. There

are some sins that an individual may not be able to commit simply because he or she does not have the opportunity. But there are no limits to what we can say, no built-in restraints or boundaries. The apostle James wrote, “If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless” (James 1:26).

Trying to hurt someone with your words can be dangerous. Chemical Mixing Streamlined Trying to hurt someone with your words can be dangerous. “He who conceals his hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool” (Proverbs 10:18). Do you ever wonder what happened to the liars that caused Daniel to be thrown into the lions’ den? “At the king’s command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions’ den, along with their wives and children. And before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones” (Daniel 6:24). Those false accusers who slandered Daniel’s name suffered the consequences of their words. “When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise” (Proverbs 10:19). I’m sure we have all tried to talk ourselves out of some situation that we have gotten ourselves into, only to find out that our many words only worsened our problems. There’s the old saying, “It is better to keep your mouth shut and let everyone think you are a fool, than to speak up and remove all doubt.” “He who has a deceitful heart finds no good, and he who has a perverse tongue falls into evil” (Proverbs 17:20). “Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing” (Proverbs 12:18). don’t want to listen to good advice and are always wanting to express their own opinion. “A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions” (Proverbs 18:2). “He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but whoever walks wisely will be delivered” (Proverbs 28:26). When God calls someone a fool, then maybe that someone should consider changing their ways. “A fool’s lips bring him strife, and his mouth invites a beating. A fool’s mouth is his undoing, and his lips are a snare to his Soul” (Proverbs 18:6-7). These two verses should remind us of the many times that our mouth has overloaded our ability. Words like, “Sure, it’s hot, but I know that I can get off the ground with a full hopper!” “I know the visibility isn’t very good, but I can get to the field!” The words we speak can make us look wise, or they can make us look like a fool! The words we use are a choice we make every day of our life!

be a real problem for people. Reckless words can be extremely hurtful when spoken to our children or spouses. More than one marriage has been devastated because a husband or wife used words in a reckless manner. Fathers and mothers are prone to speak before they have listened to what their children have to say. The Bible tells us, “He who answers before listening—that is his folly and his shame” (Proverbs 18:13). Employee and employer relationships can go down the drain when someone doesn’t think before they speak. The saying, “Don’t talk so fast you say things you haven’t even thought of yet” is something we should all remember before we speak. “He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin” (Proverbs 13:3). Hasty words have cost business men and women their reputation, their job, a contract, their friends, and millions upon millions of dollars. Do you see a man who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for him” (Proverbs 29:20). I have heard people say, “Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.” And that’s true, but here’s what the Bible says about those who

IN MY OPINION

Robert McCurdy bluemaxs2rt@gmail.com “Ag-Pilot Instructor — Retired”

Ground Personnel Ag pilots are only as good as their ground personnel - the crew that loads the airplane and the people who do their maintenance. Establishing trust in these men/women who perform as ground personnel is essential. I have created some “suggestions” on items, in my opinion, will help with the relationship a pilot has with his ground crew. 1. They should always be aware of that big turning fan. Have boundaries set around the airplane that are not to be crossed whenever the engine is running. 2. Ask them to be alert for anything out of place on your airplane, like a dripping nozzle, leaking dump gate gasket, a boom

hanger that is loose, a low tire, etc. Nothing is too trivial. Have water readily available for the pilot. Use appropriate hand signals when communicating with the pilot, especially when taxiing to a specific spot. When “jumping the wing,” be extra cautious about slipping or falling off the leading edge. of fertilizer left in a hopper bottom or Killebrew. 7. Be level-headed and completely drug free. No loading an airplane while hungover from a wild night before, especially when getting little sleep. 8. Have an all-hands meeting once a week, like on Monday morning before the first sortie. Solicit suggestions. If a ground personnel makes a suggestion, and you adopt it, he/she/they are far more likely to comply with it. Maybe a “team” atmosphere could be developed such that anyone is encouraged to make suggestions as to the overall operation of the company. 9. Make a simple, easy to read booklet of basic rules for everyone, including the pilots and ground crew, and a place for their signatures after reading. When I had my flying service in Grenada, MS about 100 years ago, I had a loose-leaf notebook entitled “Suggested Ag Pilot Reading.” The word “suggested” was a lot more effective than using the word “required.”

Average Payment Term: Learn to Calculate

APP is an essential data to calculate the Net Working Capital.

The Average Payment Period (APP) shows how much time you have to settle accounts with your suppliers from the date of purchase. The longer this period, the better for your cash flow, as money from services does not always come in quickly. If you know how to use this indicator in your financial management, you will be able to better reconcile the payment and receipt dates improving cash flow projections. The APP, also called the Average Payment Term to Suppliers, is an essential indicator for the company’s financial management. It shows how long it takes the company, on average, to pay for products, services and supplies. For this, the APP considers the interval between the purchase date and the effective payment to third parties. With this result in hand, the manager is able to assess the impact of accounts payable on cash flow, reconcile payments and receipts, make projections and better manage working capital. For this reason, the APP is one of the most important KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) to understanding the behavior of finances in the organization. For a more complete analysis, it is also necessary to consider the average time for payment receipt of application services. With the APP, you know exactly how much time you have to pay your suppliers from the date of purchase and in this way you can organize better. When calculating the APP of suppliers, it is easier to keep accounts up to date and avoid delays or defaults in the company. After all, if you know how much time you have to pay off your purchases, you can plan to make payments on the correct dates and prepare your cash for these costs. This avoids losses from penalties and interest, in addition to the feared wear and tear on the relationship with

suppliers and partners. APP also helps you gain a more accurate view of finances and project your cash flow more efficiently. In addition to monitoring weekly and monthly reports with cash movements, it is necessary to estimate revenues and expenses for future periods as an essential part of corporate financial planning.

The first step in calculating the APP is to identify payments to suppliers on your balance sheet. One strategy used to improve the company’s financial health is to seek alignment between payment dates from suppliers and receipt of money for services. The goal is to receive as quickly as possible and have the maximum term to pay for the products, accelerating the financial cycle of the business. With APP, you can better schedule payment dates and compare payment terms, always looking for a balance in cash and optimizing working capital. The APP is an essential data to calculate the Net Working Capital. With the defined period, you can determine the financial reserve necessary to cover all the company’s accounts, considering the interval between the settlement of purchases from suppliers and the receipt of money from application services. Thus, it is possible to optimize working capital, avoiding excessive borrowing and paying interest to banks. ➤ agairupdate.com | A 29

With the right ag-aviation management platform, you can have access to a complete financial module with control of accounts payable and receivable, payroll, cash flow and several other functions.

A 30 | agairupdate.com

The calculation of the APP must be done in several stages and requires attention to details. The first step in calculating the APP is to identify payments to suppliers on your balance sheet. These amounts are recorded in the “current liabilities” section, which includes all the company’s shortterm obligations and debts (which must be paid within 12 months). The report is provided by your accountant and makes it much easier to collect data for the calculation. Now, you need to calculate the average value of purchases made during the APP analysis period. For this, it is necessary to use a specific formula that considers the costs of acquisition of goods or products and the variation of stock: Purchases = Cost of services provided (CSP) + Final stock - Initial Stock. In this case, the CSP is the Cost of services provided. With the amount paid to suppliers and average purchase value, you can now apply the official formula for the AFF: AFF = Suppliers / Purchases x 360. To analyze the APP, it is important to consider other essential average term indicators for the company. receipts and stock. Average service receipt period or average collection period, indicates how long it takes the company to receive money after the service is completed. As many application services are made in installments, this value can change a lot according to the activities of each company. APP = Total pending receivables / Total Services / Days in the period. The average inventory renewal period indicates how many days, on average, the products are stored in the company before being used. Thus, it indicates how long the stock takes to renew itself, using the following formula: Average Inventory Renewal Period = (Final Inventory Initial Inventory) x Period Days / Average Cost of Service.. Now that you have learned how to calculate the APP and other similar indicators, it is important to know how to analyze this data to make decisions in your business. If you look only at the APP, you will not have much information about the company’s financial situation. Therefore, it is recommended to analyze the average term indicators together. By combining the three indicators we saw earlier, you can better assess the company’s financial cycle and define certain strategies. As we have seen, the greater the distance between payment and receipt, the greater the

need for company resources. Therefore, the lack of organization in the average payment and receipt periods directly affects the company’s financial health. The indicators most influenced by the APP are liquidity, profitability and indebtedness. Liquidity indicates the company’s ability to settle its obligations, while profitability shows its ability to generate profit and indebtedness reveals the degree of commitment of assets in relation to liabilities. With a complete analysis of the average term indicators, you can make an accurate financial diagnosis and understand the impact of these terms on other essential business KPIs. Obviously, every company wants as long a term as possible to pay its suppliers, avoiding the need for loans to fulfill its obligations. At the other end, customers also want more and more time to pay for the service provided. Therefore, it is necessary to reach an agreement on payment terms that allows the company to better organize its cash flow and at the same time preserve a good relationship with partners. The most efficient way to monitor your average payment term and other financial indicators is through a digital management system. With the right ag-aviation management platform, you can have access to a complete financial module with control of accounts payable and receivable, payroll, cash flow and several other functions. In an accounts section, you can apply filters by date, category and cost center, in addition to receiving notices whenever an expiration date is near. It is much easier to calculate the APP with a complete accounts payable history and a costs and payments report. Thus, you are able to renegotiate deadlines with suppliers, postpone commitments or request advance notice in order to improve the payment process.
