Safe and Productive? Graham brought to my attention today that the ag aviation industry recently lost another pilot.
A 6 | agairupdate.com
As I’m writing this, an exceptional summer day in the northern hemisphere is starting. Three months of hot weather will be forthcoming, guaranteed for the southern U.S. states, that will stretch into early fall. I’m just elated to be “here”, hot or cold or whatever the weather. But, allow me to regress at this point; more about that subject next month. Graham brought to my attention today that the ag aviation industry recently lost another pilot. This young gentleman was from Arkansas. Such a sadness to learn of a life cut short. I don’t know the details, yet. I’m sure they will be coming out before you read this editorial. No matter how much I preach this, no matter how much NAAA and NAAREF preach safety, or all the other ag aviation associations, along with concerned others, the results are most certainly in the hands of the pilot. For those of you that are getting the message and practicing it, kudos to you. For those that are missing the point, maybe something will change your actions, hopefully not a close call, God forbid something worse. By now, everyone should be aware of AgAir Update’s upcoming hangar party the Friday before the start of this year’s NAAA’s Ag Aviation Expo in Savannah, Georgia, December 6-9, 2021. I know I’m excited about it. Here at AgAir Update planning has already started. I don’t believe Graham would
want me to “spill the beans” just yet. However, I do know this year will be a little different from previous ones. Regardless, I hope you include stopping by to share some great southern hospitality with all here at AgAir Update’s hangar party. I’ve rambled enough. Get back to doing whatever it was you were doing. If you are flying, stop for 10 seconds before you climb in the cockpit for the first time each day asking God to travel with you and promising yourself to make today’s flights safe and productive. By the way, “safe and productive” is not an oxymoron! Until next month, Keep Turning…

Tony’s Flying Service Perseverance Pays Off by Ryan Mason
History
Jeff Seewald has continued to grow the business through personal relationships with his customers. Inset: Jeff Seewald bought the business in 2013 and has grown the company to over double the amount of acres sprayed each year since he took over.
A 10 | agairupdate.com
Jeff Seewald’s story starts like many others in the industry; growing up in a farming background in eastern Colorado. Although his family did not have their own aerial application business, Jeff fueled his aviation passion from an early age thanks to a satellite strip that was located on the family farm. In his late teens, Jeff moved on from farming as his father’s deteriorating health forced the sale of the farm where he was raised. Looking at the next step in his life, he decided on going to college, which then led to the establishment of Seewald’s first foray into the business world running a successful diesel repair business. The success of his new endeavor gave Jeff the ability to indulge in his passion for aviation. He soon gained his private pilot license in 2005 because “it sounded like fun” at the time. However, the labor intensive diesel repair business began taking a physical toll on his body. After his second back surgery, the realization set in that this type of work was not going to be his lifelong career. “The diesel repair business is pretty hard on you, constantly lifting heavy things. So I decided I probably needed to make a change, and the only thing I could think that I wanted to do or pursue would be something in flying, because I love to fly.” A longtime friendship with the aerial applicator that worked the strip at his old family farm would offer Seewald the first step in his agricultural aviation career path. He took the advice from his friend to pursue training at the now-defunct Flying Tigers Aviation flight school in Louisiana if he was serious about pursuing a career path in the industry. Jeff enrolled with Flying Tigers in 2011. After returning from Flying Tigers, his next step was, in his words, attributed to equal parts luck and determination in order to succeed in
the industry. Jeff explained the catalyst of many aviators is time and insurance. He had plenty of flight experience, but not enough in an ag plane to be insured. He stated what followed was months of hitting the phones and calling “every ag operator that would take my call” to try and find his first seat. His first opportunity came from a conversation with a friend flying in Torrington, Wyoming, who mentioned Tony Martinez, owner of Tony’s Flying Service in Great Bend, Kansas may be looking for a pilot. After a good reference from his friend, Jeff was on his way to meet up with Martinez in Kansas. Tony’s Flying Service was founded in 1984 and at that time flying an AT-402 and a 600HP radial Ag-Cat. Jeff began his career in that Ag-Cat, “if you haven’t flown an Ag Cat, I highly recommend it; they are a lot of fun,” he stated, reminiscing fondly of his time flying for Martinez in the Ag-Cat.
Getting Started After working for Martinez for two years, Tony talked about retirement, stating that the time was approaching for him to step down. It was at that time Jeff decided to attempt to buy the business from Martinez. In the fall of 2013, the two worked out their business deal, and although the business name would stay the same, Jeff took over the company as his own.
Location Tony’s Aerial Service is located in Kansas, and when Jeff was looking for his first job, he was still located in Colorado. He still maintains a home there, splitting his time between Kansas and his home in Colorado. His wife Leslie, still holds a role as a successful real estate agent specializing ➤

As Jeff took over the business and continued to build up the company, he realized that the AT-402 might not be the ideal aircraft for the future. He upgraded to an AT-502 in fall 2013 to cover more ground. “I ended up buying an AT-502 out of Illinois. I thought that this operation needed a bigger aircraft. Tony worked hard and did a good job with the flow to get stuff done, but he worked his tail off too. So I thought a bigger airplane would be better to allow more coverage. That extra 100 gallons makes a huge difference, especially with the field size around here.” The operation went from an AT-402 and an AgCat to running two AT-502s, the first in 2013 and the second added in the spring of 2020 as growth continued. Jeff stated that an aircraft larger than the AT502 would not work due to operational costs for the company. The 500-gallon capacity of the 502 is,
catering to the needs of farmers in their service area.

in his view, the perfect aircraft for their operation, where much of their clientele is within just 30 miles of their home airport located at the Great Bend Municipal Airport.
Operations & Equipment Both AT-502s have identical setups in the cockpit with a SATLOC G4 GPS with Intelliflow. Transland spreaders are used for dry work and each has the Garmin 510 Area GPS with XM weather.
Pilots Retaining pilots is a well-known struggle amongst operators, which Tony’s Flying service is no stranger to. The company lost a previous pilot to the corporate jet world, but Jeff takes it in stride, hiring a new pilot who will fill the seat in the second aircraft during the season. “That’s a tough thing right now. I’ve mentored two pilots already from zero hours in ag and put them in a 402 or 502, and so far, I’ve struck out on both of them; one is flying jets and one is a farmer that sprays just for himself now. But I think that we have to figure out how to get new young pilots out there as an industry. The pilot pool is very, very shallow. I got fortunate this year with my new pilot, Scott, but I have three friends of mine that are looking for pilots and there are a lot of airplanes just sitting this year because there is nobody to fly them.”
INTERNATIONAL
In addition to pilots, Jeff hired Cameron Sweitzer to assist with office tasks who also functions as his loader at the airport. Jeff states “I would never be able to get it all done without him.”
Crops Tony’s Flying Service has a diversified portfolio of clients and crops, spraying mostly wheat in the springtime, followed by corn, soybeans, milo and finishing the season on alfalfa in the fall. “We’ll spray wheat in March till the second week of April into May and then June is usually slower, where we will pick up odds and ends here and there. But then in July, the corn-soybean fungicide-miticide spraying begins. We spray a lot of herbicide, insecticide and fungicide. We also treat cover crops by seeding, wet and dry fertilizer, as well as alfalfa and other plant seedlings,” Jeff stated. The company is in a fortunate position for dry work, being somewhat the only game in town. “There’s a couple of us around here that do dry, but not very many. Most people have a spreader, but it’s work to put the spreader on and off that most people don’t want to do. It’s just time-consuming to take the full spray gear off, but you can charge a little more for seeding. So it’s worth it to me. Plus, the farmers need it, so we’ll make it happen.” Jeff states that although the dry work is
necessary, it only comprises about 5% of the company’s actual volume of work annually, completing 95% of their work with liquid applications routinely spraying between 110,00 to 160,000 acres annually. Although most of the work is within 30 miles of their base in Great Bend, Jeff stated that they also perform some contract work in Illinois and Wyoming each year to help other companies that they have relationships within the business.
Growth As the company grows, Jeff’s focus has always been on the customer’s needs, forming ongoing communications with the growers and farmers that the company services. He stresses always continuing communication with customers to make sure that they provide what the customer needs and ensures there are no concerns or other opportunities that they can also help the customer address from an ag aviation standpoint. When Jeff took over the business, Tony’s Aerial Service was spraying only about 50,000 acres annually. Thanks to his business sense and customer focus, the business has grown to more than double, almost triple that acreage covered annually. “My first year here, I sprayed 56,000 acres; since then, we haven’t been under 100,000. I think the second year was 80,000, but we haven’t been ➤

under 100,000 since year three.” Customer satisfaction and word of mouth among farmers aren’t the only things attributing to the company acreage expansion. According to Jeff, advances in technology, where farmers who are utilizing aerial application are now seeing real crop improvements and noticing more plant health, also is a driving factor. This advanced application leads to higher-yield crops that can sometimes mean an additional 20 bushels of crop production, equating to actual return on investment after the aerial application has taken place. Taking a personal interest in what his customers are doing has always been a passion for Jeff, who prefers face-to-face interactions. “I try to meet them and have that kind of a relationship with them. So if they have questions, they feel like they can call, and I’ll answer any questions they have honestly. Whether it’s a weed in the field that needs to be sprayed, or whatever the need is. If there is nothing we can do about it, or the timing is not right, I’ll tell them. I don’t want to over promise a situation.” Rather than just being an ag pilot, Jeff tries to understand both the crops he is spraying and the chemicals he is using. He spends a great deal of time reading up on company-supplied literature on chemicals, speaking to agronomists and asking questions in addition to going to as many sessions as he can at both the NAAA Ag Aviation Expo and the KAAA state convention. Jeff has served as the president of the Kansas Agricultural Aviation Association for the last two years. Learning about the crops and chemicals he uses has become a passion. He uses that knowledge to better his business and that of his customers.
Weather Great Bend, Kansas is known for many things. One thing, in particular, is wind. Seeing what appears to be an ever-present wind on the airport, Jeff states it can be a challenge to work at times, but the company takes it in stride and makes allowances when they fly to get the job done. This means that the company may have to attack one field from one direction one day, but a wind shift means they may also have to abandon that day’s flying and return on a second day to complete the field. It means varying flight times, but Jeff has learned to do whatever it takes to get the job done for his customers around the unique challenges the wind throws at their location.
Training As he experienced in the early days of his career, the training versus experience versus skills and hours required for insurance can become a tricky issue for ag operators. Jeff is still a huge proponent of pilots attending schools to provide the base-level training and skills required to get into the seat to fly your first ag job. Jeff believes something has to address the training gap in the industry. He took a hands-on approach in addressing the issues with his own low-time ag pilots by approaching his insurance underwriter directly and trying to find a solution. “I wrote a letter to the insurance company and said here’s what I have. I vouched for my pilot; I was fortunate that they worked with me on it, which was amazing. It cost me more money, of course, but they could insure him flying the airplane while putting water in it. After a certain amount of hours and more money, they allowed him to fly over crops.”
Safety One of the hardest things in ag aviation, according to Jeff, is learning not to push. Pressure to push on time, on loads, on weather and many other factors. In his mind, him not pushing the envelope has kept him and his other pilots over the years safe. Tony’s Aerial Service constantly deals with wind issues, and the not-pushing mentality is an excellent reminder daily not to exceed the envelope, and to always err on the side of caution when it comes to flying. As Jeff so passionately states, “There is no such thing as an agricultural emergency that requires pushing the limits of your aircraft, skills or the weather in which you fly.” No matter what the future holds for Tony’s Aerial Service and Jeff Seewald, it is abundantly clear that Jeff and his team service well the farmers of Barton County and its surroundings. They continue to strive daily to ensure that they provide a needed service with the most up-to-date knowledge to back it up.

Flying High in the Thrush 550 by Juliana Ap. Torchetti Coppick
Fuel stop in Libby, Montana. Inset: Route covered.
A 16 | agairupdate.com
Delivering an aircraft, whether new or used, is always a rewarding task. It’s like being the emissary of good news. That aircraft is part of someone’s projects, whether to compose an existing fleet or perhaps to be the aircraft that will initiate the projects of a new company. I felt doubly gifted by being hired to take this Thrush 550 to its destination as the flight was scheduled to start on my birthday and the day after Mother’s Day. As the plane is equipped with the Garrett engine, the contractor was looking for someone who had experience with this engine, due to the particularities of its start and shut off procedures. As I had already flown a rice crop in an aircraft equipped with this same engine, I was
comfortable operating it. But what really caught my attention was the fact that I would fly from the extreme Southeast to the extreme Northwest of the United States. What we in Brazil call “navigation” or “shuttle flight” Americans call “cross country”; a literal definition of the route I took to deliver the plane in question. The aircraft was in Cross City, Florida and was destined for Moses Lake, Washington. As is common in this type of flight, the initial plans suffered some changes in the route due to the weather. The terrain was also a determining factor, since instead of planning a straight line towards the destination, I prepared myself to fly further north and avoid the high Rocky Mountains that cut through Idaho ➤

and reach around 14,000 feet. I did a careful preflight inspection as soon as I arrived at Cross City Airport (KCTY). Because it has a single axis, the Garrett requires that the shut off and start procedures be done with a flat propeller pitch and that right afterwards, the pilot manually rotates the propeller so that the engine goes through the cooling process in a uniform manner. Otherwise, the metal will suffer deformation and in some cases it may even lock. Therefore, before starting, it is also necessary to manually turn the propeller to check if the cooling has been done properly since the last shutdown. If this procedure causes the engine to make harsh noises or to show irregular friction, it could be a sign that something is wrong. After checking that everything was ok outside, I climbed into the cabin and started the engine. Starting a Garrett isn’t rocket science, it just requires attention to the engine parameters and a lot of care with the EGT temperature. The limit is 770°C, but obviously if the pilot senses that the temperature is rising abnormally, the emergency cutout must be done beforehand to avoid further damage. Again, my winged partner didn’t disappoint: the start went smoothly and I taxied to
the fuel pump to fill the tanks with 228 gallons of jet fuel. After a lot of rain, around noon the ceiling went up and I was able to take off. I had to fly at about 1000 feet AGL, but visibility was great.
After checking that everything was ok outside, I climbed into the cabin and started the engine. During cruise, the aircraft demonstrated its speed and I was able to maintain 145 kts of indicated airspeed. After two hours and thirty minutes of flight, I landed at Bessemer airport in Alabama (KEKY). After refueling and a quick stop for coffee, it was time to move on. When I was about to enter the cockpit I heard someone shouting “Go girl! and I was pleasantly surprised to see a group of smiling women waving at me through the airport fence, where a small restaurant is located. After just over two hours of flight, I landed in Trenton (KTRX). From Trenton to O’Neil (KNOL), Nebraska, it took about 2 hours and 40 minutes of flight. After landing and while fueling the Thrush 550, I had the opportunity to appreciate one more of the many well-kept airports.
A very kind lady and her husband quickly chatted with me and said that after they retired she decided to learn to fly and he decided to work as manager of that FBO (fixed base operation). From O’Neil, I continued the ferry flight to Black Hills (KSPF), South Dakota. The airport’s altitude, 3,933 feet AGL, was already showing signs of a change in the terrain. The airport is beautiful and the FBO there has a typical style of mountain cabins, made of wooden logs and stuffed animals decorating the rooms. I decided to stay there for the night. After a delicious dinner and a good night’s sleep, it was time to move on. Two other pilots were leaving and we ended up splitting the taxi fare to the airport. On the way, ➤

they told me that they were ferrying a Stearman that had been fully restored. When we arrived I could see that historic plane up close and take some photos. I think these occasions with which aviation presents us are incredible. Back on my mission… I took off from the Black Hills bound for Lewiston (KLWT), Montana. A stretch full of immense rocky mountains that look more like sculptures made by an artist. Already close to Lewiston, I observed one of these sets of mountains called the Big Snowy Mountains. The place lives up to its name! White snow covers the tops of the mountains that reach a majestic 9,100 feet altitude. Again: landing, fuel, coffee and back to the sky! The leg from Lewistown to Libby (S59), Montana was the prettiest of the entire route. I had to fly higher, reaching 10,500 feet in some parts, because the snowy peaks in that region are really high. The landscape is breathtaking. Beyond the mountains and snow, about 60 miles from Libby I crossed magnificent Flathead Lake. Even from above, it is possible to see the crystal blue water. There are other smaller lakes in the area, all of which are beautiful. I literally felt like flying through the scenery of a postcard.
While fueling the aircraft I realized how unusual it is to see an agricultural aircraft in a snowy landscape. Libby airport is at about 2,600 feet MSL. The descent has to be made close to the runway as the location is hidden in a valley. I descended as much as I could, but up to about eight miles from the airport I still had to maintain 7,000 feet. One of the many things I love about Garrett engines is the quick response, both for accelerating and decelerating. Obviously I entered the circuit much higher than usual, but I stretched my downwind leg a little to lose altitude and I was able to approach without any problems. The location is beautiful, but requires attention both on arrival and departure. Some pilots, especially those flying piston aircraft, prefer to fly over the highway, so in addition to maintaining a lower flight level, they may also have an extra option in case of an emergency landing, as A 22 | agairupdate.com
the mountains do not offer favorable conditions for this kind of situation. While fueling the aircraft I realized how unusual it is to see an agricultural aircraft in a snowy landscape. Speaking of which, I also noticed that in these locations there is the option of Jet Fuel +, which is nothing more than aviation kerosene with additives. Its function is to prevent the fuel from forming into a gel, a typical reaction when flying in high altitudes and low temperatures. After the takeoff, heading for my final destination, I climbed again to 10,500 feet. This was the shortest leg of all, lasting about 1 hour and 50 minutes. The customer, who was awaiting the arrival of the aircraft, told me that the company’s runway was about 30 ft wide and about 3,000 ft long. If the conditions there were not favorable for landing, I could proceed to the airport municipal. That was the least of my concerns. What really caught my attention was a meteorological phenomenon that until then I had only seen in photos and videos. When crossing some fields during the descent, I could see numerous spots where the dust rose and formed a well-defined vertical line. Initially I believed that these were places where tractors were preparing the land for planting. But it was nothing like that! What I was seeing were “dust devils”. Moses Lake is located at about 1,200 MSL and in a very flat region, which favors the occurrence of this phenomenon. The atmosphere was extremely turbulent but everything went really well. Even on the narrow runway and with all the swirls, I was able to land smoothly and without any problems. Finally another aircraft delivered with countless new experiences and some friendships that I made along the way. Before returning, I had time to taste the delicious cuisine of the American west coast; literally a delight for those who love fish and seafood. But for those who fly, the really good taste is the one that stays after another successful mission!

AIRCRAFT ENGINES AND LUBRICANTS Felix Leborgne fleborgne@absteny.com
Role of the Lubricant in Piston Engines
Hydrodynamic lubrication works well when the relative speed of the parts is high enough to overcome the load pushing them against each other.
A 24 | agairupdate.com
The lubricant in aircraft piston engines has several complex functions within the engine. One of the main characteristics is lubricating the moving parts to reduce friction and wear. Friction occurs between two pieces that move relative to each other, even though they have polished metal surfaces. Since there are microscopic peaks and valleys called asperities, these surfaces come into contact, and the rough edges adhere to each other through micro-welds. If these surfaces are in relative motion, the micro-welds constantly break and reshape, resulting in friction and wear. Friction is resistance to relative motion, and wear is loss of material. There are different types of lubrication events within an engine; the first is hydrodynamic lubrication, which occurs when a fluid (especially a lubricant) is interposed between two moving parts. The relative movement of these parts creates sufficient pressure in the lubricant, forming a fluid wedge to separate the parts to prevent each from coming into contact. This is the same effect that occurs during hydroplaning when a car travels on a road covered in a layer of water, and the wheels become separated from the pavement by the pressure of the water. Hydrodynamic lubrication works well when the relative speed of the parts is high enough to overcome the load, pushing them against each other. If this speed is insufficient, the lubricant pressure will not be adequate, and the parts will not stay separated. The second form of lubrication is film lubrication. This lubrication method relies on a thin film deposited between moving parts that adhere to surfaces, reducing friction through
a chemical action produced by extreme pressure additives. Another function of a lubricant is keeping engine parts clean. Compared to automotive engines, aircraft piston engines can become extremely dirty. Burning leaded fuel produces large amounts of lead salts, carbon, sulfur, water and unburned fuel, among other by-products of combustion. These deposits accumulate in the lower part of the engine due to the passage or “blow-by” of these products through piston rings. The oil functions as a method to keep these contaminants dispersed and in suspension to be drained at the following oil change. Not allowing for accumulation inside the engine in the form of sludge. Likewise, the dispersant additives contained in the oil help neutralize the acids generated by combustion. Lubricant also contributes to the engine’s cooling in an aircraft, especially in piston-powered aircraft that cannot be cooled by air. The only way to keep the pistons from melting is by keeping oil circulating on the underside of the piston (crown) to remove the heat generated by combustion. The lubricant typically gains about 30°C (90°F) as it circulates through the engine, which is then dissipated through the oil cooler. The lubricant also acts as a seal between the piston rings and the cylinder walls, preventing the loss of gases and liquids due to “blow-by.” This also keeps the o-rings, seals, and gaskets lubricated, so there is no loss of fluid or gases through them. If the aircraft is equipped with a constant speed propeller, the oil controls the variable pitch. Likewise, in turbo-charged engines, the ➤

“wastegate” (turbo compressed air relief valve) is hydraulically actuated by the engine oil. Used lubricant extracted from the engine after an oil change is an essential tool in knowing the ongoing condition of the engine in an airplane. Samples are often sent to a specialized laboratory that, through spectrographic analysis, informs us about the different elements contained. If we do this process regularly, operators will learn what the principal elements and pollutants are, such as iron, copper, aluminum, silicon, bronze, lead, tin, etc. Other benefits of testing include knowing the state of the used oil by measuring its viscosity and oxidation and the state of additives such as phosphorus, zinc, and calcium. As part of regular servicing and knowing your aircraft, it is also vital for mechanics to cut and open the oil filter to see what particles may become trapped in the filter. They can be ferrous (those attracted by a magnet), iron type, or non-ferrous aluminum, bronze, etc. A published Lycoming Service Bulletin (No. 480F) detailed a guide on how to proceed in finding particles in the oil filter. This SB can also be applied to Continental engines as a guide, as

Continental does not have a specific bulletin. Last and perhaps most importantly, lubricants protect metal components such as the crankshaft, camshaft, piston rods, and cylinder walls from the effects of corrosion during periods that the aircraft is not in use. Because we typically use our airplanes less often and more unevenly than our automobiles, the preservative requirement of aeronautical lubricant is much more demanding than in automotive lubricants. Therefore, remember to change the oil every 50 hours for filtered engines, 25 hours for screened engines or every four months to keep lubricants in excellent condition to perform all the functions described above.

12 Key Events in Ag Aviation’s First Century August 3, 1921. An experimental application of insecticide dust, conducted jointly by the Ohio Department of Agriculture and the Federal Aviation Experiment Station near Dayton, becomes the first recorded use of aerial application. 1922–1924. Taking note of the success of the Ohio aerial application experiment, USDA researchers recognize the potential for the new practice in the ongoing fight against boll weevils in the South’s cotton crop. Their research results in aerial application to cotton becoming the first widespread commercial use of agricultural aviation. In 1924, Huff-Daland Dusters Inc.—the forerunner to Delta Air Lines—becomes America’s first known dedicated aerial application business. 1946–1947. The Army’s primary training aircraft in the 1930s and early 1940s—Stearman biplanes—are sold by the thousands as war surplus. Aerial applicators jump at the opportunity to acquire the sturdy, pilot-friendly equipment, and the Stearman remains an agricultural aviation staple into the 1960s. 1947. In California, a Stearman fitted with two 450watt headlamps makes the first nighttime aerial application. Today, headlamps have been supplemented or replaced with sophisticated night vision equipment, enabling aerial application at night when winds are calm, and bees are not present in fields and orchards. 1950. The Texas A&M Aircraft Research Center develops the Ag-1 ag plane prototype, the first aircraft created solely for ag use. 1951. 23-year-old aircraft design prodigy Leland Snow develops the S-1 ag aircraft. Snow continued to perfect the design throughout the 1950s and went on to found two successful ag aircraft design and manufacturing companies. Because of his groundbreaking work, Snow is considered by many to be the father of the modern ag airplane. 1955. Over a wildfire in the Mendocino National Forest in California, a Stearman ag plane becomes the first fixed-wing aircraft to be used in firefighting. B 2 | agairupdate.com
1966. With the growth of suburbs bringing the non-ag public closer to farming operations, and with increasing public uneasiness over pesticide use, the National Agricultural Aviation Association was founded to promote the professionalism of the aerial application industry. Today, NAAA represents the industry among legislators and policy makers and provides advanced safety and technical training for operators. Mid-1970s. The introduction of the turbine engine in agricultural aircraft represents a game-changing breakthrough in aerial application efficiency. Compared to piston power, the added muscle of the turbine engine increases air speeds by 20 mph or more and makes it possible to boost a plane’s hopper capacity by up to 75%. 1993. The Global Positioning System, or GPS, becomes commercially available in ag aviation. The technology instantly enables pilots to improve accuracy and make highly targeted applications, ushering in the age of true precision agriculture. 2005–2021. Engineers and researchers continue to push the envelope regarding the incorporation of precision application, digital infrared imaging and data analytics into ag aviation. These technologies make it possible for applicators to effectively spray exact prescribed doses and reduce the total amount of pesticides used. Industry experts believe rapid advances in digital technologies in the cockpit will soon enable onboard systems to virtually take over the in-flight management of the application process, allowing pilots to focus on safe, environmentally sustainable operation of the aircraft. 2015–2021. Because of its growing use by farmers as an economical, fast and effective way to seed cover crops, aerial application emerges as an important component in strategies to address climate change with carbon sequestration.

The National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) is rapidly approaching the apex of a major publicity campaign to share the agricultural aviation industry’s history with the public. One hundred years ago, on Aug. 3, 1921, researchers desperate for a way to prevent sphinx moth caterpillars from ravaging the valuable Catalpa tree crop came up with a novel approach. What if the caterpillars could be controlled with insecticide dust released from an airplane? Far-fetched as it was in 1921, when farmers applied insecticides by hand and aviation was still in its infancy, the idea worked. In an experimental flight conceived by the Ohio Department of Agriculture, U.S. Army test pilot Lt. John Macready applied lead arsenate dust from a World War I surplus biplane over a Troy, Ohio, Catalpa grove. The insect pests were successfully dispatched, the trees grown for use as telegraph poles and fenceposts were saved, and a practice now vital to crop production, wildfire fighting and mosquito control was born. NAAA is using all types of media to educate
the public about the industry’s 100th anniversary and the essential role aerial applicators continue to play for farmers, foresters and society today. Storytelling vehicles include three different length video documentaries, a comprehensive book on the industry’s history, social, print, trade and news media releases and a dedicated website, AgAviation100.com, to share the 10-decade story of ag aviation.

An interesting and colorful pioneer firm further north is the Precissi Flying Service at Lodi, sometimes known as the “Italian Air Force.” Organized in 1945 by brothers Lou, Gus, Joe, and Frank Precissi, the firm has grown from a twoplane operation into one of the most substantial and effective firms in the San Joaquin Valley. Their Lodi operation is a revelation, especially to visitors with an interest in aviation history. The Precissis still use the vintage TravelAirs, most of them manufactured in the late 1920s and early 1930s. All of them are in mint condition, painted beautiful Air Force blue and yellow, and all carrying Continental 220 horsepower W670 engines. “We decided from the beginning to stay with Travel-Airs as long as possible and we’ve more or less done it,” says one of the flying veterans.
“Even back in the 1950s and 1960s, when we took on a few Stearmans, we still stuck with the 220 horsepower Continental engines. They make for good, easy maintenance and with most of our work centered right around our air park or from strips out in the growing area, the 220s will haul all that we need to haul.” Joe, Lou, and Gus were the pilots, while Frank handled ground operations. They did a superb job of selling the widely diversified growers in the area on airplane work and give much credit for their success to some very fine pilots-men like Sid Novaresi, an Air Force Reserve officer who became a General in rank, Kenny Palmer, Jerry Wolther, Maurio Marchetti, Hunter Wardlow, Charles Greer, John Roche, John Trimmer, and others. became involved in the firm. Pete Precissi, Lou’s son, Dan, son of Gus, and Joe’s son John all found a place in the organization. Pete and Dan do ag flying, while John is a ground man, concerned with scheduling and other business matters. Besides the Travel-Airs, this firm has recently acquired several new Eagles, but it continues to rely on the 220 horsepower Continentals. “Why change when you know you got a winner?” asks Joe. Precissi Flying Service has surely been a winner in California ag flying circles. In its 37 years of continuous activity, the firm proudly boasts that it never has had a pilot injured! In the flat lands of northern California, around Yuba City, Knights Landing, Colusa, Chico, Woodland, and Arbunkle, rice is king, but vegetables and forage crops are given high priority. Ken Onstott of Onstott Dusters did much to exploit ag flying all over this region. As a kid, Onstott spent much time hanging around the old Del Monte airport, watching Bob Strief of Hawke Dusters working the rice and fruit in that area. His ag flying career began with Bill Eddy’s Air Service at Yuba City in late 1945. Onstott formed a partnership with Eddy about 1946. Their fleet consisted of Travel-Airs, a Waco 9, a Bull Stearman or two, and, at one time, several brand new White Standard D-25s. The firm principally serviced rice crops-a dirty, difficult job, since the crop was planted wet and had to be loaded by hand. “One day,” recalls Onstott, “Bill Eddy and I were putting out wet rice and, as you know, the pilot did the loading, standing in the cockpit and dumping those nasty, wet sacks into the hopper. Every time Bill would swing a sack up to turn it into the hopper, the damn thing would hang on the comer of the center section and spill all over the ground and into the cockpit. “Finally Bill hopped down, looked all around the loading area and came up with a big old three-foot machete, chopping away at the rear of the center section! He finally cut it all away, clear up to the rear spar and then, without a word, threw the machete down and began loading rice! “We flew that old Travel-Air that way for the rest of the season and then trimmed away the rear of the center section on the rest of them! It made for much better loading!”

Refines Dispensing Gear Eddy was killed in a crash about 1949 and after a year or two of running the firm with some residual partnership connections, Onstott acquired 100 percent interest and has operated it as Onstott Dusters ever since. Onstott, from the outset, has worked diligently to improve dispensing equipment, especially spreaders that would work well with rice. “I remember once,” he recalls, “when we bought a Bull Stearman from Rex Williams that had a terribly ragged old spreader. But we were so snowed under with work that we had to use it. “With the spreaders we had, we were getting about 21 feet on the swath. But when I opened the gate and cut loose with the spreader on the Bull, I soon noticed that the flagmen were wide-stepping me. “When I got back to the strip, one of them came in and told me that the spreader was spreading beautifully out to maybe 38 or 40 feet. So I readjusted my gate opening and did an absolutely beautiful 40-foot swath. “Boy, when the season let up, we removed that spreader, took it completely apart, and built jigs and patterns so that we could build others exactly like the original. We did just that-built a new spreader for every airplane we had, put them on the planes, and you know what happened? Not a damn one of them would spread over 25 feet and they streaked every field we flew! “This just goes to show that we never did, and probably never will know everything that we need to know! I’m sure that I could still come up with a spreader that would really work if I could just do away with the landing gear and the propeller on the airplane. But then I doubt if it would fly too well, especially on hot days!” Through the years, some of Onstott’s pilots who helped promote the industry were Gil Wagge, Harry Newell, George Spain, and Tom Fisher. This firm contributed a great deal to the growth of ag aviation in California and still does. It presently operates out of Yuba City, Knights Landing, and Colusa, and has a cotton operation at Gila Bend, Arizona. Its current fleet consists of eight Ag-Cats and five Ayres Turbo Thrushes. It appears that Onstott Dusters will be at the forefront of California ag flying for a long, long time.

BIOGRAPHY
Jesse Orval “J.O.” Dockery (aka “Dock”), born February 26, 1909.
B 12 | agairupdate.com
Dock Dockery began his aviation career soloing at the tender age of 12, September 12, 1921! Albeit quite by accident, Dock had flown with barnstorming pilot, Barney Flowers, as a passenger in a Standard with a four-cylinder Hall-Scott engine. Dock had been hired to guard the aircraft while in Corpus Christi, Texas. In payment for his services, Flowers took Dock on a cross-country through southern Texas, where Dock “followed through on the controls”, but never flew the aircraft. Back in Corpus Christi, while guarding the ship, upon a dare by his brother Alfred, Dock proceeded to taxi the Standard in the pasture, when it took flight! Dock flew around for about ten minutes, then proceeded to land in the pasture, when the last drop of fuel passed through the carburetor! Dock’s first flight was also a dead stick landing. Landing safely, from that moment on Dock Dockery was hooked on flying. Dock went to work for the next two years spotting fish with the Standard he had soled. He flew 600 hours and to his knowledge that most likely was the beginning of fish spotting by aircraft. In 1923, at the age of 15, Dock moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas. In nearby Stuttgart a blacksmith, by the name of Dick Shelburn, built-up Hisso Standards to sell. When Shelburn’s regular ferry pilot wasn’t available, young Dock took the job of flying a Standard to its new owner in Jackson, Mississippi. After that Dock continued flying for Shelburn, but got discontented and moved on. Moving to Capital Hill, Oklahoma to work for
Burl Tibbs as a flight instructor, Dock trained the likes of Benny Howard, Wiley Post, Paul Braniff, along with other notable future aviation pioneers. Dock is even credited with checking out for night flying, his friend Charles Lindberg. Only problem working for Tubbs was that he took the credit for the training. Dock returned to Stuttgart. In 1926 Jimmy Finklea of Leland, Mississippi came to Stuttgart in a Standard SJ with a Hisso engine to take flying lessons. He told Dock and Allen Scott about a heavy leaf worm outbreak at the Delta and Pine Land Planting Company at Scott, Mississippi. Dockery and Scott convinced Finklea to allow them to install a duster hopper in the Standard. They flew the Standard to Mississippi where the worms were defoliating the cotton, loaded the hopper with calcium arsenate and flipped a coin to see who would fly the first load. Dock won, took ➤

off and flew low over the cotton, opening the hopper gate. Because there was no sealing, most of the dust ended up in the cockpit, blinding Dock! Actually, conditions for dusting were perfect and the two pilots managed to finish, getting perfect results. Dock maintained an operation in his hometown of Stuttgart, but also formed a company in Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1933 working for King and Anderson Planting Company, one of the largest cotton producers in the world. Dock’s aircraft were Waco 9s, Travel-Airs, Stearman C3Bs, and one famous “Bull” Stearman with a 330 horsepower J69. It could carry 1,000 pounds! The aircraft was Dock’s favorite. One day near Moorhead City, Mississippi Dock was forced to park it in the top of a tree due to an engine failure. The Finklea Brothers bought the “Bull” Stearman in the tree, took it down and soon had it back to flying. Dock was successful at spreading aerial application to other crops besides cotton. Although rice may have been seeded by air first in California, Dock certainly introduced it to the southern rice growing regions around and in Arkansas. The first successful seeding Dock did for rice was on the Paul Wollworth Farm near Stuttgart in 1938.
Dockery also pioneered aerial applications in the Midwest, particularly in the vegetable growing regions of Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota. Dock also pioneered aerial applications in the Midwest, particularly in the vegetable growing regions of Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota. With an outbreak of aphids in peas in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, Dock applied rotenone dust at 4050 pounds to the acre for the sum of five cents pound, a fortune in those days. Soon afterwards, Dock contracted with Green Giant Foods and the pilgrimage to the north country became a regular source of income. Dock also made annual migrations to the southeastern shore of New Jersey to dust the cranberry orchards, as early as 1931. B 14 | agairupdate.com

TWENTY YEARS AGO
Air Ag; Managing and Marketing by Bill Lavender
Harold Thompson figuring out his next marketing scheme.
B 16 | agairupdate.com
Author’s note: I visited Harold Thompson in May of this year in Tarboro, North Carolina. Shortly after that, on July 31, Harold got a closeup look of a telephone pole in his AT-402A. The aircraft was destroyed, but by the grace of God, Harold is with us today, doing what he does best, managing Air Ag. He hopes to be back in an ag plane before too long. TARBORO, NC — It used to be if an ag aviation company set up shop in an area where there were crops grown that typically required spraying, that company would eventually develop a clientel. Of course, an area can only support a certain number of ag aircraft, but there seemed to always be some spraying for everyone. The aforementioned is a very general view.
Sure, there have been operators who set up shop and went out of business due to lack of. However today, even for established companies, the scenario of losing business (market share) is raising its head. The way ag aviation should do business is changing. Not unlike farming, agav companies are needing more and more to search out new business to supplement the old. When a commercial pilot’s license and an ag plane were once all that was needed, today a good understanding of managing and marketing principles are just as important. More and more ag operators are realizing the need to market their services. This not only includes the established work, but the ➤

establishment of new work. Even more importantly, is the way an operator acquires this work. One such progressive agav operation is based in east, central North Carolina. Owned and operated by Harold Thompson, Air Ag, Inc. - Aerial AgriServices of Tarboro, North Carolina, looks for new business and works diligently to keep it. Harold began loading ag aircraft in his high school years for Air Care of Rocky Mount, North Carolina at their Tarboro strip. In 1987 he began flying ag for Air Care while he also flew corporate aircraft (Beechcraft King Air) for the company. After two years, Harold proposed to Air Care that he purchase the aerial spraying division in Tarboro, and he did. Working with a Cessna Ag Wagon, of which came with the Tarboro company, he mostly flew over cotton, peanuts and tobacco. Cotton is the primary crop. It has been said that Tarboro was the home of the first boll weevil contracts flown in the late 1970s. Over the years, the fleet grew to a total
of four C-188s. Tarboro and surrounding counties are not blessed with large acreages. No mile+ spray runs like the central plains of Nebraska, Kansas and Texas. The region is cut up into small fields often spread miles apart; ideal work for a Cessna Ag Truck. But, even utilizing a reliable and profitmaker ag plane like the C-188, there could be a need for a more productive ag plane, if there was more work and the work was managed properly. Right away Harold knew he would have to put his marketing skills to work. He implemented two actions; one was to start a newsletter, Aerial View, and the other was a “sign-up” program for his customers. The newsletter is an informative way to reach his and potential customers. The sign-up program is an innovative way to delegate the work first to his most loyal customers. Harold built a fine business. He recruited a friend, Richard Brake, who had desktop publishing skills. Between the two men, Harold explained ➤

what information he wanted to relay to his customers, with Richard taking these concepts and developing professional color brochures and newsletters. They would dream up slogans: No field is too soft when sprayed from aloft!; Insurance that you know you’re going to use; We’re more than a 911 service; many farming families use Air Ag as part of their management team; all of these slogans have been included in many different brochures and newsletters. The brochures include data comparing cost of operating ground machines versus aerial applications. The data includes the cost of pest damage, percentages of damage related to cost and how delaying an application costs the grower money; factual information in easy to understand numerical text and graphical format. Then, using the brochure, Harold educates his customers to the benefits of contracting the acreage they plan to treat “before” they need the applications. The brochure lists the Benefits of Contracting: Reserve a “Place in Line”, prevent wet field delays, improve response time, avoid cutting up fields and damaging crops, free-up your time for other matters, and contract = discount. Harold offers a contract package that will fit the needs of each individual grower. The grower agrees to buy in advance a certain number of acres to be sprayed. Thus, Air Ag knows at the beginning of the season the minimum number of acres that will be flown. Without a doubt, this allows for better planning that always results in a more profitable business. Typically, growers receive a brochure, followed by a letter. They are asked to commit for at least
three sprays on specific acreage, regardless of field conditions. A sign-up fee is paid at the time of the commitment. This will guarantee the grower to be in the first group to be sprayed when all others must in essence “get in the back of the line”. Also, the grower will receive a discount for his application. Air Ag’s sign-up program must work, since another brochure “Contracting Aerial Spraying Services for Cotton in 2001” has been mailed for the twelfth consecutive year! But, no matter how well a company manages and markets, mother nature can always deliver a devastating blow. This is exactly what happened to Air Ag September 17, 1999. The ravages of Hurricane Floyd came ashore at the North Carolina coastline bringing with it torrents of rain; rainfall that exceeded 16 inches in 24 hours. Off the east end of the Tarboro air strip lies the Tar River. During the night, the river crested its banks with water rising over the airport to a level in the Air Ag hangars of more than eight feet! Ag aircraft were almost completely submerged. After 10 years of marketing and managing, Air Ag had finally been able to buy a more productive aircraft, an Air Tractor AT-402. In February of 1999, Air Ag had bought a brand new AT-402 from Chuck Stone of Southeastern Aircraft Sales and Service in Fort Pierce, Florida. When the flood came, the aircraft barely had 300 hours on it. The flood waters rose to the engine gearbox of the aircraft, submerging the rear end of the PT6, as well as a majority of the airframe. The flood waters crept into the hangars, the office, the file cabinets, the aircraft and anything less then eight feet high. It was truly a disaster; ➤

an act of God and no flood insurance. Records were wet, floors ruined, sheetrock walls and insulation destroyed. Damage incurred that could only be repaired with replacement. Chuck Stone came to the rescue sending an AT-502 to use. Air Ag was shut down during the busiest two weeks of the season. The following year, Harold replaced the AT-402 with another new one from Southeastern. The Cessna 188s were repaired with new IO-550 engines from Bonaire. The area was declared a disaster by the Federal government, qualifying Air Ag for SBA disaster money. From the efforts of Air Ag’s neighbors, friends and business associates, and a loan from the SBA, the facilities have been rebuilt, better than ever before. Business continues as usual looking on from the outside, but from the inside the ramifications of the flood of 1999 will be a force to deal with for B 22 | agairupdate.com
years to come. Harold is often asked, “Why didn’t you fly out the aircraft?” The answer is, it happened too fast. Remember, it had been raining for days. At 6:00 pm water was rising over the banks of the Tar River, but the airport had never flooded before. By 2:00 am, evacuation started and at 7:00 am there was five feet of water on the runway and rising; too fast and too late. Managing and marketing, that’s what it is all about with any business. Today, it is more important than ever for those two efforts to be focused and executed in an ag aviation company. Harold Thompson has done it with Air Ag. As a matter of fact, he has been doing it for years. The results are obvious, the company is successful, an example for all. Despite a telephone pole!

A WING AND A PRAYER
Carlin Lawrence carlin@agairupdate.com
Showing Mercy to Other People
There’s an increasing level of hatred and violence in this ungodly world we live in; whether we like it or not, it’s there for all of us to see.
B 24 | agairupdate.com
Jesus said, ““Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy” (Matthew 5:7). The Bible teaches that those people whom God has blessed the most abundantly were merciful to other people. Joseph was merciful to his brothers after they sold him into slavery. David spared Saul’s life after Saul tried to kill him. God delights in mercy, and as a Christian we have the privilege of showing mercy. We can show mercy by giving money to the poor, food to the hungry, or a bed to the homeless. “If there is among you a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother, but you shall open your hand wide to him and willingly lend him sufficient for his need, whatever he needs” (Deuteronomy 15:7-8). Jesus’ enemies accused Him falsely, beat Him, spat upon Him, cursed Him and nailed Him to a cross. But He still sought mercy for them, praying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). Jesus Christ demonstrated a perfect model on how to show mercy throughout His earthly ministry. He healed the sick and enabled the crippled to walk. He gave sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, and speech to the mute. His redeeming love embraced sinners of all kinds. He wept with those in sorrow and comforted the lonely. He embraced little children and the elderly alike. His mercy was compassion in action! Jesus said, “Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice’” (Matthew 9:13). When Stephen was being stoned, he pitied his wretched murderers, asking God to forgive them (Acts 7:60). Jesus did the same thing (Luke
23:34). That should be our attitude as well. “For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him” (Psalm 103:11). “The merciful man does good for his own soul, but he who is cruel troubles his own flesh” (Proverbs 11:17). As Christians, if we’re to please God in our own life, we must show mercy to other people. We can show mercy by praying for the salvation of people who haven’t trusted in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Jesus said, “Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you…pray for the salvation of our government leaders” (Matthew 5:44, 1 Timothy 2:1-4). St. Augustine said, “If I weep for that body from which the soul is departed, how should I weep for that soul from which God is departed?” We mourn over our loved ones who have died, but do we mourn as much for lost souls? “Let not mercy and truth forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, and so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man” (Proverbs 3:3-4). “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ — by grace you have been saved” (Ephesians 2:4-5). As the sovereign and independent Creator, God is not obligated to save anyone, nor is God obligated to show goodness and mercy toward sinners who deserve only condemnation. Since every person on this earth is governed by God’s law, He can demand that we show mercy to others, and that includes those who
UNITED STATES
have sinned against us. Since we are obligated to imitate God, we should desire to imitate our Savior’s mercy. “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). God’s mercy is undeserved. If we deserved it or could earn it, it wouldn’t be mercy. Mercy isn’t the same as grace; although they are similar in meaning, grace and mercy are not the same. The difference is: Mercy is not getting what we deserve; punishment is withheld. Grace is getting what we don’t deserve; unmerited favor. Mercy is God not punishing us for the sins we have committed, and grace is God blessing us even though we don’t deserve it. Mercy is deliverance from judgment. Grace is extending kindness to the unworthy sinners like ourself. There’s an increasing level of hatred and violence in this ungodly world we live in; whether we like it or not, it’s there for all of us to see. This ungodly hatred has actually gotten into Jesus’ Church a lot more than us Christians like to admit. The word “mercy” is used 276 time in the NKJ Bible and 262 times in the KJV Bible. The Bible says about God’s mercy. “You, O Lord are a God full of compassion, gracious, long-suffering and abundant in mercy and truth… Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever” (Psalm 86:15, 136). “Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful” (Luke 6:36). God’s commendation is upon those who show mercy, but His condemnation is upon those who are merciless. God said, “I was angry with My people…You showed them no mercy; on the elderly you laid your yoke very heavily” (Isaiah 47:6). “Let the iniquity of [the merciless person’s] fathers be remembered before the Lord, and do not let the sin of his mother be blotted out . . . because he did not remember to show [mercy]” (Psalm 109:14-16). If someone wrongs us, fails to repay a debt, doesn’t keep their promises and etc., we’re to be merciful to them. That doesn’t mean we excuse sin, but we’re to respond with a heart of compassion. I know this isn’t easy to do, it’s hard! But as Christians we have an obligation to God to be obedient men and women. Jesus showed compassion to us, can we do any less for others? “Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; yes, our God is merciful…the Lord is very compassionate and merciful” (Psalm 116:5, James 5:11). Showing mercy, or no mercy, it’s our choice!

IN MY OPINION
Robert McCurdy bluemaxs2rt@gmail.com “Ag-Pilot Instructor — Retired”
Passionate About Ag Flying Recently I got a call from an operator who was interested in hiring one of my former turbine transition students. After each student completes the course, I write a detailed critique of their time with me. I told the prospective employer that I would look through this student’s critique and get back to him. As it turned out, his critique was pretty runof-the-mill and for his flying skills, on a scale of one to ten he may have been a seven. His strong points were that he did put forth a 100 percent effort in regards to studying and helping around the airport. In my critique, I had written that he was dependable, punctual, sober (very important) and had the drive to excel. Flying the airplane is important, but these other attributes are equally important - if not more so. Skill with the GPS and efficient SAFE turns will get better and better with time and practice. We’ve seen many, many students who were a “natural” when it came to flying the airplane, but they may have been somewhat lacking in the other attributes I just mentioned. B 26 | agairupdate.com
In one of my previous articles I have mentioned this, but students who concern me the most are those who can fly the wings off an airplane and think they are “bullet proof.” This particular pilot, who is the focus of this little dissertation, definitely does not fall into the “bullet proof” category. He has a mature attitude about ag flying and is more concerned about doing a good job for the farmer and being able to use the airplane the next day. He came across to me as earnestly striving to be the best ag pilot he can be. The prospective employer who called me said he was looking for a pilot who is “passionate” about ag flying. That is the first time I have ever heard it expressed like that and I am going to use that expression in the future when I think it applies to a student, either as a basic ag student or turbine student. Bottom line: my former turbine student who is hoping to capture this turbine seat is truly passionate about ag flying and I told the prospective employer I’d give him a shot, which I think he is going to do just that. I sure hope so.

100th Anniversary of Aerial Application Celebration Scheduled for August 3
We are thrilled to celebrate the official 100th anniversary of aerial application at a special event on Tuesday, Aug. 3, in Leesburg, Virginia. Invitees include Congressional Members, VIPs in the ag and aviation industry, media, USDA, FAA and Department of Transportation. On Aug. 3, 1921, Lt. John A. Macready flew a Curtiss JN-6 from McCook Field in Ohio to a nearby catalpa grove while Etienne Dormoy manually dispensed lead arsenate over the grove to kill sphinx moth larvae. In all, the dusting plane passed the grove six times and distributed about 175 pounds of the insecticide. After the 54 seconds it took to apply aerially, less than 1% of the insects remained alive on the catalpa trees after six days of observation of the targeted area. The speed, efficiency and overwhelming effectiveness of the aerial dusting experiment spawned the birth of the agricultural aviation industry. The celebration on Aug. 3 will provide an overview of the industry’s importance, a brief history, and the technological evolution of the industry, as well as the official presentation of Dusty Crophopper (the AT-400 used to promote Disney’s 2013 movie Planes) being donated to the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum. Thank you to Rusty and Lea Lindeman for the donation of Dusty Crophopper. Dorothy Cochrane, the General Aviation Curator of the Smithsonian, will be there to accept. Know About the CallAir by Mike Feeney
CallAir A-9 pulling a tow.
B 32 | agairupdate.com
From my recollections, the Call Aircraft Company (CallAir) was established in 1939 by Reuel Call at Afton, Wyoming, to build a touring aircraft that he had designed. WWII intervened and they carried out repair contracts for the duration. After the war they did produce several hundred of the "A" series, a tidy low-wing cabin aircraft, but realised that they would be unable to compete with the likes of Piper and Cessna so the company focused on the agricultural aircraft market. In 1954, CallAir designed the A-4, one of the USA's early purpose-built spray aircraft. Whilst a moderately successful type, the company ran into financial problems and was sold to InterMountain Manufacturing (IMCO). I think that the "A" series of cabin aircraft used the 125 or 135 bhp Continental engine. Already evident is the non-cantilever, strutbraced, wing configuration that became so familiar on the A-9 and the Piper PA-25 Pawnee. The A-4 and A-7 were improved and re-engined to become the A-9 CallAir using the now classic and most sensible configuration for an ag-aircraft... low-wing with a tractor engine with the spray tank and cockpit raised and rearward. Production of the A-9 commenced in 1963 with 25 being imported
into Australia by the distributor, Aerial Agriculture of Bankstown, NSW. The A-9 has a steel-tube fuselage covered by metal panels forward and dacron fabric to the rear. The wings have wooden main-spars with alloy ribs with dacron covering. The cockpit has a roll-over cage and wire-cutters are fitted to the undercarriage legs and the windscreen. The fibreglass spray tank holds 170 US gallons. The basic specs for the A-9 are: • Engine: 235 bhp Lycoming O-540. (later variants used the 300 bhp injected IO-540). • Wingspan: 35 ft, wing area 182 square feet, length: 24 ft. • Empty weight: About 1,700 lb. Max. weight: 3,000 lb. • Cruise speed with load: At 75% power about 90 knots when fitted with rotary atomizers or nozzles. Whilst I sprayed extensively in the very similar PA-25 Pawnee, I never used the A-9 on ag-work. I logged many hours glider towing in the A-9 out of Gawler, near Adelaide, Australia. We also used a Pawnee and I did not notice any performance difference between them. Both would tow a ➤

two-seat K-13 to 2,000 feet and get back onto the ground in about five minutes. I really liked the A-9. It was lively and responsive and comfortable to sit in for a few hours of towing on a busy day. The B-1 story is of interest to us in New Zealand because it was disliked by many pilots. The B-1 was essentially a scaled-up A-9. It was considerably larger (wingspan 44 ft. 8 inches, length 30 ft.) and a much heavier aircraft with a hopper capacity nearly double that of the A-9. They fitted the 400 BHP opposed eight-cylinder Lycoming IO-720 which was, before fixes were made, a horrible engine. New Zealand operators discovered this with their earlier Fletcher FU-24-950 models which suffered many engine problems and complete failures. Of the 36 B-1s produced, eight came to New Zealand. I never flew one and I know for sure that some pilots were most reluctant to fly them on aerial topdressing operations. I was unable to find any reliable weight data for the B-1 other than a payload figure of 1,500 lbs, which does not sound correct for such a large spray tank/hopper size. I recall carting nearly 1,300 lbs of spray-mix in the 235 BHP Pawnee from a good airstrip. My guess is
that the B-1 had an empty weight of about 3,000 lbs. Add the pilot (180 lb) and fuel for 1.5 hours (200 lbs), plus a load of 2,000 lbs of fertiliser and we get 5,380 lbs. That is about the same as a 400 BHP FU-24 or a DHC-2 Beaver. I did hear that the B-1 was a 'ground-lover' on take-off and had poor climb performance. I also heard that its undercarriage was not up to the large numbers of take-offs from our often rough airstrips. I hazily recall hearing, or reading, something about the engine cowl shape creating adverse aerodynamic effects at high power...down-forces which did not help matters as airspeed increased. I can't find any written reference to this effect, but it has stuck in my memory over many decades. But, the fact is that the B-1 was principally designed for aerial spraying operations from reasonably good airstrips and probably did a good job of that. In the CallAir Museum, which is co-located with the Afton Civic Centre, I saw a yellow B-1A hanging from the ceiling. It had a 450 BHP Pratt & Whitney R-985 radial fitted and a three-blade propeller. To my eye, it looks a lot nicer than the version with the flat-eight IO-720. My opinion is that some New Zealand ➤

operators tried to operate the aircraft with excessive payloads which did not suit, relative to overseas practice, our short airstrips. Studying a photograph of the B-1, I note the long and wide upper fuselage and engine cowling. In the flying attitude, it does present a large surface area which could well have generated a considerable down force. I wonder also about the deck angle the B-1 sits at in the three-point attitude. The undercarriage is quite short which results in an angle-of-attack several degrees less than that required to generate maximum lift at the take-off end of the airstrip. And, unlike an FU-24, at high weight it is not possible to rotate a taildragger to a high angle of attack, thus requiring a higher airspeed to be attained for a clean lift-off. On short New Zealand airstrips, I can visualise the problem, particularly as ground effect was suddenly removed as one fell off the end of the strip into clear space. Also, as the aircraft began to roll after loading, the undercarriage would tend to spread, further reducing the AoA. One wonders whether vortex generators on the top cowl may have improved matters. Certainly
the B-1A, with its uncowled P & W R-985 radial breaking up the airflow, would not have had that down-force problem; in my estimation. Several of the New Zealand B-1s suffered accidents. In 2012, on the Flight Safety Foundation's www.flightsafety.org Aviation Safety Network's database, I found 17 accidents involving the CallAir B-1. Of these only three were in the USA, one of which was fatal. All the remainder listed occurred in New Zealand. So, it may be fairly said that the type's operational record under our operational conditions was dismal indeed. I have to wonder just how much homework was done by those operators who purchased the B-1 with the Lycoming IO-720 engine. It is somewhat of a mystery to me, as the involved operators were experienced men and not fools. NTSB REPORTS Accident Synopses
NTSB Identification: ERA21FA200 Date: May 2, 2021 Location: Wingate, NC Aircraft: ROBINSON HELICOPTER R44 Injuries: Fatal On May 2, 2021 a Robinson R-44 helicopter was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Wingate, North Carolina. The pilot was fatally injured. The helicopter was being operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight. The commercial pilot was spraying fungicide on a wheat field when the accident occurred. According to several witnesses, this was the first time they had observed the northwest portion of the field, which contained multiple power lines, being sprayed via aerial application. The helicopter had been applying fungicide all morning, operating about 15 ft above the 3-ft-tall wheat during the spraying operation. The pilot’s wife reported that after landing, having lunch and loading more fungicide, the pilot took off to begin spraying where he left off. Images recovered from a GPS application on the pilot’s tablet computer showed that the helicopter took off, flew to where the pilot left off, and completed its first pass in a northerly heading. The helicopter then turned and flew over the field on a southerly heading. The data correlated to the helicopter’s flight track ended in the vicinity of where the helicopter’s main wreckage came to rest. Witnesses in a nearby home reported that they heard a loud noise and simultaneously lost electricity to their home. They then looked out their window and saw the helicopter as it descended in a nose-down attitude before it impacted the field in the vicinity of the power lines. One B 38 | agairupdate.com
of the witnesses stated that it appeared as though the helicopter became entangled in the wires before it descended nose-first into the ground. The helicopter impacted and severed an energized wire, also known as a “primary wire” that was oriented about 228° magnetic and measured about 29 ft above ground level at its lowest point over the wheat field. The wire spanned about 345 ft between two utility poles, 264 ft of that span over the wheat field. Two additional power lines spanned other portions of this northwesterly portion of the field. The helicopter came to rest on its left side. The fuselage was crushed and deformed aft. The tail boom remained attached to the main fuselage; however, the empennage, composed of the upper and lower vertical stabilizers, horizontal stabilizer, the tail rotor and its gearbox, were separated from the tail boom. The windscreen and door windows were separated from the fuselage and fragmented. Both main rotor blades remained attached to the hub and were whole from root to tip. One blade was bent downwards about 2 ft outboard of the blade grip, and the other was bent downward and in a U-shape. The agricultural hopper remained partially attached to the fuselage. It was breached and its lower side was crush-damaged. The engine compartment and engine remained intact. The empennage was located 99 ft and 336° from the main wreckage. (See Figure 1) The lower vertical stabilizer sustained trailing edge impact and semicircular crush damage just below the horizontal stabilizer. The tail rotor gearbox was intact but separated from its airframe mount and was located about 112 ft and 208° from the main wreckage. The tail rotor hub remained attached to the tail rotor gearbox output shaft and portions of
the two tail rotor blades remained attached to the hub. One tail rotor blade was missing about 5 inches of its tip end and the other tail rotor blade was missing about 2 ft of its outboard span. One of these sections was not recovered. The leading edges of both tail rotor blades exhibited impact damage. A fractured segment of one of the tail rotor blades, measuring about 18 inches in length, was located 170 ft and 44° from the main wreckage. The tip portion of one of the fractured tail rotor blades, measuring about 5 inches, was located 119 ft and 3° from the main wreckage. The tip portion exhibited impact scars consistent with a wire strike as well as impact with the tail rotor guard.
NTSB Identification: CEN21LA223 Date: May 18, 2021 Location: Clayton, LA Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-502A Injuries: Fatal On May 18, 2021, an Air Tractor was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Clayton, Louisiana. The pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight. The operator stated that the pilot had completed several flights already and was in the processing of spraying product on a field when the accident happened. Witnesses stated that the airplane had just completed a spray pass and was in the process of turning around. During the turn, the airplane pitched up and rolled left into a steep bank so that the wings were almost upside down. One witness stated that it looked like the pilot, “didn’t pull out of a barrel roll.” The airplane “fell out of the sky” and impacted the ground inverted oriented on a

southeast heading. A postaccident examination revealed ground impact marks from the outline of the wings, which indicated that the airplane impacted the ground in a flat and wings level inverted attitude. The wing fuel tanks were found breached, and a significant amount of fuel was noted in the dirt under the airplane. The cockpit was crushed into the ground and partially buried. The propeller blades were twisted and bent and also partially buried in the ground. The flaps were found near full extension. A SatLoc GPS was removed from the airplane and sent to the NTSB Vehicle Recorders Lab for examination and data download.

Financial, Economic and Accounting Break-Even Point
The accounting break-even point is the most used and the simplest. In it, the value of fixed costs and expenses is divided by the contribution margin.

Break-even is when the company’s total revenue is exactly equal to the sum of costs and expenses. It is calculated to know how much, in number of transactions or money, it is necessary to sell the service in order to pay for the operations without making a loss. It is noteworthy that the breakeven point is not the goal of any company, but a reference, the objective is to make a profit. If the break-even point is exceeded by $1.00, it means that the company is profiting. The accounting break-even point is the most used and the simplest. In it, the value of fixed costs and expenses is divided by the contribution margin. The result is the revenue needed to match spending. There are two variations of the accounting break-even point. At the financial break-even point, the only difference is that the depreciation of assets and other non-disbursable expenses are excluded from fixed costs. This is because some companies, in their annual balance sheets, include depreciation as a cost – for example, if they have an asset that was worth $100 and is now worth $70, the $30 lost enters the company’s list of costs or expenses. At the point of financial balance, this difference is ignored, because all that matters are the expenses that represent an outlay of money from the company’s cash. The other variation is the economic equilibrium point, in which the opportunity cost is added to the sum. This is a monetary correction to be considered together with fixed expenses. The reasoning is as follows: if the entrepreneur did not invest in the company, he could invest his money in an investment that would yield, for example, 10% a year. The economic break-even point considers this margin, that is, you only “tie” when you pay the expenses and have a
remuneration compatible with the percentage that the money would yield invested in the financial market. To find the break-even result, you first need to ascertain two factors: Fixed expenses that you will consider in the cost of keeping the company in operation, whatever its production. This includes renting the office or operating base; employee salary; water, electricity and gas; office supplies, hygiene and cleaning; cleaning, aircraft maintenance and security services. What is not included in this calculation are taxes on services and pilots’ commission. These costs will already be built into the service’s sales price. The contribution margin is the gross gain on sales of services. In addition to being useful for finding the break-even point, it is often used to calculate the selling price of services. You add up the service costs and variable expenses and add the contribution margin value to the result. This surplus will serve, firstly, to pay the company’s fixed expenses and then the profit. The most commonly used calculation to reach the break-even point is very simple. You will add up your business’ fixed expenses and divide them by the contribution margin. The formula is this: Breakeven point = Fixed expenses / contribution margin In the case of the financial equilibrium point, it is only necessary to disregard depreciation and other non-payable expenses when calculating the amount corresponding to fixed expenses. At the economic break-even point, you add a percentage to these expenses. For example, if the expenses are $50,000 in a year and you set the opportunity cost to 15% of that amount, the total fixed costs will be $57,500.

You saw that the break-even point is when revenues equal expenses and there is no profit, and that the contribution margin is the amount used to pay fixed expenses and profit, right? From there, it is possible to conclude that when the contribution margin is equal to the fixed expenses, the company is at its break-even point. With this type of number in hand, the diagnosis will depend on the company’s particularities. If the break-even point or number of services needed is too high, an alternative is to change the contribution margin. But beware, because this implies a new sale price for the service. If it decreases, the number of services required to break-even increases; if it increases, the service may lose competitiveness. Finally, there is still the possibility of tightening the belt and reducing the company’s fixed expenses. Whatever the solution, the fact is that the first step towards the financial health of your aero agricultural company is to understand and apply the main control and monitoring tools.

One Part Wet and the Other Dry … by Martin da Costa Porto
Distractions and details have the potential to significantly threaten safety in all phases of flight.
The pilot opened his eyes and what he saw was the ceiling of a white room, “Where am I,” he wondered? He looked down and could see cables connected to his body, turned his head and saw monitors and computers in his hospital room. The last thing he remembers is the tree branches approaching at incredible speed, hitting the windscreen of his plane and his arm covering his face in an effort of self-preservation. This story can be fantasy or reality. What is not fantasy is the fact that in agricultural aviation the details make the difference. There is a factory placard on my plane that says: "Caution: loose sleeves can retard the throttle when closing the spray valve" and that's what happened to this pilot. By closing the spray valve, his sleeve retarded the throttle and the plane was left without power at a critical moment.
WHY DO DETAILS MATTER? If you are sitting in the cockpit of an agricultural aircraft, you fly very well, you know how to make applications and sometimes the piloting technique is done mechanically. What not all of us know and learn from bad experiences, scares and moments of terror is that small details can kill us. There are so many details that it would be impossible to talk about all of them, so I am going to discuss two examples that happened to me.
THE HORROR OF BRAKES THAT DO NOT RESPOND Many current checklists include in the phase before landing, "Brake pressure: Check". In agricultural aviation we usually do not use such detailed checklists and in our operations it is not practical to make a checklist before each landing. On one occasion after landing with a slight crosswind, as the plane’s tail wheel touched the ground, it began to drift into the wind due to the weather vane effect. That's when I hit the brakes
A 32 | agairupdate.com
to avoid drifting and there was nothing, the pedal had no pressure. The next thing was an adrenaline strike and then the wing hit a pole. Fortunately, a dent in the leading edge of the wing was the physical consequence for my plane. The hardest blow was to my ego for not having tested the brakes on final and detected that the brakes did not work.
INTERNATIONAL
BLIND TAKE-OFF With much terror, I discovered the sinister combination of humidity, cold and windshield with traces of agrochemicals on the windscreen. One autumn morning, after washing my windscreen, I started the takeoff run and the windscreen, as if by magic, began to turn white preventing me from seeing anything ahead. Looking through artificial myopia, flying the plane was the makeshift solution. Then I recovered from the shock and with the plane under control, I opened the side air intake of my window and I cleaned a spot of about 10 cm that allowed me to land safely.
1% BETTER EVERY TIME Behavior change expert and great writer James Clear in his excellent book Atomic Habits, talks about the power of little habits. In fact, the book refers to the name Habits (routine or practice that is carried out on a regular basis) and Atomic (small amount of something, source of immense energy or power). Clear talks about the “aggregation of marginal profits”. The principle of this philosophy is based on isolating each one of the aspects of our activity and simply applying an improvement of 1%. There are distraction details, like using the cell phone, adjusting the pressure of the spraying equipment, looking at the amount of liquid in the hopper in the swath, glare and even
cows on the track. Distractions and details have the potential to significantly threaten safety in all phases of flight. These are details, which would not be very important in the general context of agricultural work, but in the event of an accident, yes. As an agricultural pilot, I cannot prevent the plane's brakes from failing. However, I can check it. I also don't have the ability that Charles Lindbergh had to land his plane without a windshield at night in Paris, but I can use a clean rag for my windshield. I can educate my ground support to use a wet end of the rag to clean the windshield and with the dry end, remove the remains of the product from it. As Clear says, “Your results are the reactive indicators of your habits. The little battles we win every day are what define our future.” So every time your helper goes to clean your windshield, tell him, "One end wet and the other dry." He currently flies an AT-402B turboprop Air Tractor in Uruguay.

Seeking a winter seat or ferry jobs. I am a very ambitious and determined pilot that is looking to grow. I am a dual rated commercial pilot going into my second season as a helicopter applicator. I am nearly ALL turbine time, around 1400 hours currently, mostly rotor wing in UH60M BlackHawk, Bell 206, and OH58A/C. I have roughly 120 hours fixed wing tail wheel time, to include the Turbine Training Centers Air Tractor 502 course, as well as 6 hours of dual turbine Thrush time and instruction. My times are growing every day. I am a NAAA member and I am also licensed in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Kentucky. I have limited herbicide experience, but that is also growing. I am interested in ferrying fixed wing aircraft and ideally I would like the opportunity to have a seat doing fertilizer in timber this winter. I am committed to my helicopter season through August at minimum, November at latest. I would love the opportunity to continue flying for the rest of the year, no preference on turbine or piston. Willing to temporarily relocate. I realize I do not meet most “open pilot” insurance policies, but after speaking to my agent and providing my experience I am indeed insurable for you! If anyone is interested in reaching out to me, I will do my best to make it worth your time. Thank you for reading. Fly safe. Zachary Zacharypourciau@yahoo.com 225-718-6190
