Big News!
Savannah is a great little port city close by to some of the best golf courses, restaurants, history and sightseeing to be found anywhere in the U.S.
A 6 | agairupdate.com
I suppose the “big” news of the month is NAAA moving the 2021 Ag Aviation Expo from Palm Springs, California to Savannah, Georgia. As I understand it, California is still experiencing Covid restrictions that would not be beneficial to the success of the NAAA convention. The Covid environment is much less restrictive in Georgia, as those who attended last years’ convention in Savannah realized. I’m all for it! Savannah is a great little port city close by to some of the best golf courses, restaurants, history and sightseeing to be found anywhere in the U.S. The people there are always accommodating. The hotels are great and you can’t beat the location. Watching out the seventh floor of your hotel room, a container ship motor up the Savannah River at eye level is quite a sight to see. And, of course, the aircraft can land on an adjacent road so the convention has hands on aircraft display in an enormous convention center. It can’t be beat! Plus, by the time the Expo rolls around, major construction at the Perry-Houston County Airport (KPXE, where AgAir Update offices are located) should be completed. This means we can once again have the AgAir Update Open House and Hangar Party to kick off the convention. Watch for more details on that! On another note, in this edition of AgAir Update you will read about NTSB’s annual report on agaviation accidents for 2020. There are a couple of noteworthy items in it. First, the compilation of deaths in the U.S. from flying ag for the last 10 years was an astonishing 81 pilots. I don’t have the data handy for the 10 years before that, but it would be something of interest for comparative reasons. I do recall in the early 1990s, 15 deaths
seemed to be a common denominator. If that is true, the industry has made progress with an approximate 50% average overall reduction per annum in the last 10 years. However, years like 2020, 2016 and 2014 do nothing to improve those statistics with 13 and 12 deaths respectfully. If you are carefully reviewing 2020’s numbers, you may notice there were 12 fatal accidents, but 13 fatalities. The key words are fatal accidents and fatalities. There were 12 accidents with a fatality and in one case, a mid-air, where there were two fatalities. This accounts for what would seem to be a discrepancy. The mid-air was two SEAT aircraft in the Pacific Northwest working a fire in tandem that resulted in one accident, but two deaths.
A reader sent me a link where a fixed wing drone was powered by an electric motor spraying a crop. A reader sent me a link where a fixed wing drone was powered by an electric motor spraying a crop. That was somewhat interesting. I can think of a bucket of reasons the project will meet many challenges. The link claimed 135 acres an hour with a payload of just over 600 pounds. That makes me wonder if batteries are considered part of the payload, as fuel is for a manned, FAAcertified ag-aircraft. I watched a video of the drone treating a field. With all its autonomy, it still overflew the
INTERNATIONAL
boundary instead of shutting off and doing a clean up pass. It also appeared to have significant drift potential when observing the spray pattern. This brings to light a problem I’ve observed with all drones that dream of being an ag-aircraft. The manufacturers and operators seem to not have any indication of what spraying with an aircraft is all about. The last thing this industry needs is a drone operator to go to the field and ruin everything we have worked for addressing drift. I’m willing to speculate that all emergencies that ag-pilots have experienced, every attempt was made to provide for the safety of those on the ground. I don’t see this happening with a drone that is beyond line of sight. Don’t tell me they can’t get lost, or have a battery, or motor failure. I simply don’t believe it. My basic contention about drones is they are aircraft that share the same airspace as ag-aircraft. To me, that means drones should follow the same regulatory rules that ag-aircraft and ag-pilots have to follow. This means the drone should be built under Part 23 FAA rules with FAA-certified parts,
certifications and inspections. The pilot should be a commercial rated pilot with the same skill sets as an ag-pilot. And, of course, the loading facilities should be subject to EPA scrutiny, just like agaviation. If we are going to play this game, let’s play it fair. In parting, don’t misunderstand me about drones. Yes, I have always stated they can be a very valuable asset for the ag-operator. Many challenges drone manufacturers are faced with can easily be overcome by an ag-operator. And, drones do have a role in working areas the ag-pilot would rather not be in. But in my belief, the drone will have to be fixed wing or a single rotor wing aircraft like the helicopter to be able to make an even spray pattern. Until next month, Keep Turning…

Zanoni Equipamentos Last October, we had the pleasure of receiving our friend Bill Lavender (from AgAir Update) here at Zanoni Equipamentos Agrícolas, where we tell a little bit of our history and share a barbeque and some caipirinhas. In a recently published article, Bill expresses his impression of our company, Zanoni Equipamentos. We thank him for his visit and welcome him and the AgAir Update team back anytime! Lucas Zanoni Brazil Mi amigo Lucas; I enjoyed very much my visit with Zanoni and the wonderful Zanoni family. The barbeque was fantastic! Tight Formation We are hard down IFR here in north Mississippi today; locked in with roads iced over, nobody moving. I have a 50acre lake for my front yard with 500 +/assorted ducks and Canada Geese It is my greatest pleasure now to watch a flight of ducks to land in tight formation, gear down, full flaps, then touchdown in full reverse thrust. And I say, “Thank you Lord for sending me these magnificent flyers.” And I thought I could fly! As I always told all of my students, “Be safe, have fun and make money.” Robert A.McCurdy, retired Flying Tiger Aviation, llc Cruger, Mississippi Hello Robert; Watching ducks, uh? to about 50 Canadian Geese. Why they are called Canadian Geese, I don’t know; more like Georgia Geese. I imagine they got tired of the cold and the migrating and decided to live here in a more temperate climate. And, like you, I marvel at the way they take off and land, often in IFR conditions and always squawking. Their only draw back is they poop everywhere! Cheers, —Bill

Retirement Dear friends and customers: As I approach my 81st birthday, I decided it is time for me to hang up my flight suit and retire. As the manager of M&M Air Service of Beaumont, Inc. for 54 and a half years, I thank you for your patronage and understanding. The time has come for M&M Air Service to close its ag work after 74 and a half years of service. I am passing the touch for the ag work to ARC Aviation of Texas, Inc. operated by my son, Andy Mitchell, his wife Rita and son Cameron (ARC). 409-656-4036. Most of you know Andy and his skill in ag flying. It has been my pleasure serving you, my friends and customers. I wish you all a fond farewell. M&M Air Service of Beaumont, Inc. George F. Mitchell, Jr., Owner/President Beaumont, Texas Congratulations Mr George; It’s been a long road, this I know. But, if you are like me, it’s been a darn wellpaved highway. Enjoy your retirement. Maybe by the time I am 80, Graham will let me retire! — Bill
I saw your article about Jack Colley. Here are a few photos from those days. Here, I am buying a Colley 600 Super Stearman from Jack Colley in 1990! I owned and worked this airplane for 2,000 hours and about 12 years. It had a 300-gallon hopper with 80-gallon fuel; a great Stearman! And, Mr. Colley was very good to me. Joe Woolslayer Tulsa, Oklahoma Hey “Old” Joe! Darn, we are both still kicking! Can you believe it? Ha! Very good to hear from you. I visited Mr. Colley many, many decades ago and you too for that matter! I can’t remember when I was at your place in Oklahoma looking at your Stearmans. Can you? More than 20 years for sure. Take care, —Bill P.S. - And, I’m sure you haven’t changed a bit since these photos were taken… -Bill

Those Where the Days Very much enjoyed your “Those Were the Days” article in the February edition. Brought back a lot of great memories, along with recalling some of the challenges 40+ years back. First and foremost was the continuous mental gymnastics required that made it feel like your hair was on fire. Guesstimating gallons per acre sprayed by craning your neck to check hopper levels at each turn, and comparing that to mentally calculating acres covered with the swath width on the field length. Adjusting airspeed and/or boom pressure upwind and downwind to achieve a standard application rate. Trying to locate a flag dropped into a four foot tall crop to align the next swath. I remember the first flow meter (not flow control) that came along in the early 90s. Thought I had won the lottery. Same with the arrival of GPS and subsequent additions to that

technology. Wonder what the next 40 years will bring! All the Best, Ted Delanghe Regina, SK, Canada Ted; Drones are never going away. They may have a place in aerial firefighting, but not much of one for agricultural flying. At some point, the drone manufacturers are going to realize that a VTOL type aircraft cannot make an even application. Possibly, fixed wing or rotary wing drones may play some small part in ag-aviation, if there is a Return On Investment, which in our lifetimes that doesn’t seem likely. More threatening to our industry, as a whole, is bio/genetic engineering of plants to resist pests. I don’t know how a modified seed can ward off a weed, but the promise and ROI for other pests is better than for drones. I can visualize
how modified seeds could produce plants resistant to fungi and insects. That may not be too far in the future. However, Mother Nature has always come through for our industry in some form or another. When the boll weevil program was launched, everyone thought that would be the end of cotton spraying. It wasn’t. Less yes, but still have to spray it and along about that time both glyphosate and Headline-type fungicides hit the market adding even more acres. Also, I don’t see how the pilot can take on more responsibilities in the cockpit, so possibly some of those responsibilities will be handled by ground personnel; use your imagination! One thing Leland Snow told me was that technology does not back up. So, expect things to continue to change and for someone involved in that process it will be a bonanza. Take care and stay warm, —Bill

Brandt Bottoms Realizes Ag Aviation Dream Story by Graham Lavender Photos by Fara Bottoms
A 12 | agairupdate.com
INTERNATIONAL
“How does a man with no money, borrow money to go to flight school?” That was the question that Brandt Bottoms posed to a Dumas, Arkansas businessman in 2007 - the question was answered with a loan on a handshake to send the 19-year-old aspiring ag pilot to Flying Tigers Aviation’s flight school. With zero flight time and a lot of determination, Brandt earned his Commercial Pilot’s License and graduated from the Ag Pilot program the following year.
Left: Brandt Bottoms in his AT-602. Below: The Bottoms Family (L-R) Fara, Brandt, Gentry and Marley.
Brandt Bottoms had always known he was going to be an ag pilot. His grandfather, Melvin Grimes, began his flying career in his late 30s and flew a successful 23 seasons. From the time Brandt was old enough to jump the wing and pull hoses, he could be found working with Melvin from his Junior High years until he left for flight school. Brandt’s grandfather was adamant Brandt was not going to fly and wouldn’t begin to entertain the notion of helping him get his license. Brandt found the help he needed with a local businessman, who took a chance to help the focused young man
realize his dream of ag-flying. After graduating from Flying Tigers, Brandt returned to Arkansas to continue loading for his grandfather Melvin with the hope of maybe starting to fly. Melvin wasn’t convinced, still adamant about Brandt staying out of the cockpit. Another local operator offered Brandt the chance at a seat flying boll weevil contracts; Brandt took the opportunity. With his bags packed, and ready to begin his first season, Melvin called Brandt to the flying service. “Son, if you’re going to do this flying thing ➤

anyway, you may as well do it here where I can keep an eye on you,” said Melvin, as he pointed to a 300 Brave sitting on the ramp. He was ready to mentor his grandson and finally help him start his ag flying career. “There are rules,” proclaimed Melvin. “You’re only going to do fertilizer work this first year. No spraying”. And that is exactly what Brandt did; he logged 260 hours in the Brave that year, while the Brave logged almost as many hours in the shop, laughed Brandt during this article’s interview. Needless to say, the Brave found a new home, and Brandt landed in a new seat. Once Melvin laid witness to his grandson’s attention to detail and his “whatever it takes to make it happen” mentality that year, he realized he could finally put his own helmet on the shelf. Melvin proceeded to let Brandt take his seat in his AT-502. Of course, this meant he would be breaking his own ground rules about wet vs dry work, but all worries went out the window once customers called him to say their gardens were surviving and thriving and their landscaping had lived. The first and last season in the Brave ended in late 2009. Grimes Ag-Air (Melvin’s operation) continued to run two AT-502s. As Melvin Grimes retired from active ag-flying for various health reasons, Brandt moved into a full-time seat in one of the AT-502s. In 2011, Melvin sold his business to his long-time pilot, Jason Sessions. Brandt, at the time, wasn’t in a position to take over the business, but he never
lost sight of the dream. He continued flying with Sessions for two more seasons until he began flying an AT-602 for David Moss based in Tillar, Arkansas. “I learned to fly and be an ag-pilot from my granddad, but I learned to be an operator from David,” says Brandt, as he recalls the years of mentorship that David provided for him during the eight years he flew for him. Brandt had always wanted his own operation and David provided the framework to get the experience needed to branch out on his own. “I wouldn’t have done it any other way. In the early years, I didn’t know what I didn’t know,” says Brandt. In 2019 Brandt, with David’s blessing, decided to go all-in and start his own flying service. Fara, Brandt’s wife of 12 years, grew up not far from her family’s farm in Varner, Arkansas. So, with land in Varner left to Fara by her grandfather Tom Free, it was the ideal location for the new flying service, right next door to their home on the Free Farm. Brandt secured the flying service site and started the groundwork on a 2500’ runway with 1800’ of concrete. Growers started asking Brandt about his new venture. During this time, he was flying off a nearby satellite strip with a leased AT-602 from Aufderheide Flying Service based in DeWitt, Arkansas. Brandt’s new drive-thru hangar, load pad and office were all completed just in time before fertilizer season began in 2020. His first landing at this new strip was to take on a load of fertilizer. ➤

Bottoms Up Flying, along with a new Part 137 certificate, operates an AT-602 powered by a PT6A60AG, outfitted with a Satloc Bantam GPS with Intellliflow. CP-11 nozzles are set up for a mixture of soybeans and corn applications - but most applications are over rice and cotton. Brandt’s work is about 60% wet and 40% dry. There has been a steady increase in rice applications. Brandt manages his applications and accounting with Chem-Man. His uncle, G Myron Grimes, is the office manager (on paper), but in reality, he is the flying service’s “get Brandt off the ground” man in real life. He’s been running flying services in the area for the past three decades, and once he realized his nephew was serious about making his dream a reality, he was on board before the bank was. He never had an ounce of doubt and knew if Brandt could find someone to finance his dream, he could find a way to handle everything else. And that’s exactly what he did; from daily office tasks to customer service and sales, G Myron made
certain all Brandt had to do each day was fly. Bottoms Up Flying has been a family affair. Two of Brandt’s grandparents are pilots and have been a valuable resource for all things air, while others in his and his wife’s family have helped with everything else from legalese to tractors to tailgate pep talks. All in all, it’s safe to say the millions of moving parts it takes to pull off a successful first year of flying came together to fit like a pictureperfect jigsaw puzzle. Brandt is active in the Arkansas Agricultural Aviation Association as the South Region Representative for 2021. He is also a member of the NAAA. The Bottoms - Brandt and Fara, with their two children, Gentry (8) and Marley (10), are part of a great success story - from Brandt walking into the local bank alongside his hometown hero on that fateful afternoon with no money but a plan, to a successful flying service that they call their own.

Getting Up to Speed
Hangar doors will slide open. Some perhaps for the first time in months.
A 18 | agairupdate.com
Spring hangs up her coat in the doorway of March. She’ll escort old man winter out, don her flowered bonnet, roll up her sleeves and set to work waking up the world while she’s cleaning up winter’s mess. Hangar doors will slide open. Some perhaps for the first time in months. The sun will shine in, lighting up the interior enough to chase out the winter doldrums that gathered in the shadows. It’s time to crank the engines and warm up the oil. It’s time to begin another season of providing close air support in the battle to feed a hungry world. Spring brings excitement and anticipation. It also brings challenges in the form of wind and rain. In most places, we’re applying a lot of herbicides. I think there must be some sort of cosmic joke floating around in the atmosphere that causes the windiest parts of the year to coincide with the need for widespread herbicide applications. Rain is usually welcome; until it’s not. Fields get too muddy to work, runways get swamped and there comes a point where it gets to be miserable. I know many will push into the weather. We’ve all done it and will probably do it again. Right or wrong, that’s the nature of the business. There’s been some who’ve pushed the weather right into a mighty big drift claim. There’s been a few who’ve pushed it into their own memorial service. It’s not my place to say what anyone’s limits ought to be. Let’s just make sure we’re using good judgement and common sense. Sounds simple doesn’t it? So simple yet, so complicated. If there ever was a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” season it would have to be spring. Growers are feeling the crunch of their timetables, so they put the pressure on the aerial application company to get it done no matter what. Most times we get away with it. Sometimes we don’t. It’s those times we don’t, however, that carry the biggest price tag. The guy
you were spraying for won’t give a damn about the drift claim you got and a sad face at a memorial service doesn’t cover the cost of burying one of our own. Keep it in perspective, my friends. You can go from hero to zero in one cycle of the money handle or be reduced to a name carved into a rock when waiting one more day, or even a couple hours might have made the difference between spending the night at home, or in a box. Yes, that’s kind of preachy and not too encouraging, but there are things that have to be said. Sometimes more than once.
It takes a little while to get my back pockets welded to the seat and my bioelectronics synched back with the airplane. Rust builds up quickly in the winter. I know if I haven’t flown in a while, I’m as clumsy as a one legged rooster. It takes a little while to get my back pockets welded to the seat and my bio-electronics synched back with the airplane. I’m always eager to get going, but I know my skill level has dropped over the past months. It doesn’t take long, but it does take a conscious effort to get back up to speed quickly and without scratching any paint. Studying up about the area where you’re working is an important chore at the beginning of the season. Has there been any new wires added? Cell towers? Has there been any susceptible crops planted where there wasn’t last year? There’s probably a dozen or so similar questions to ask and find answers for. You can skip them if you

IF YOU NEED want, but you’re better prepared if you don’t. Information is as good as ammunition. Getting up to speed on chemicals and loading procedures is something to brush up on as well. It doesn’t matter if this is your fiftieth season, there’s new chemistry and procedures coming around every year. Feed your brain a fresh bale of knowledge, even if it’s stuff you already know. Exercising your brain limbers up your thinking process. Most of us need a little help after being out of the cockpit for a few months. Winter is also cranium cobweb season. It’s imperative that an ag pilot be knowledgeable and capable in all aspects of the job. It won’t hurt to spend some time on the ground going over the loading equipment and reading labels. Even if you’re just a hired gun, you need to know how the equipment works. You also need to be familiar with chemicals and materials you are applying. By the time we get to harvest, we’ll all be battle hardened and sharp as a razor. But we ain’t there yet. And to get there, we have to be smart about what we’re doing in the months leading up to it. Stepping off into spring is a critical time. Just like taking off with a heavy load from a short strip on a hot day. It takes prior planning, caution and skill to get off the ground successfully. And it takes the sense to recognize the fact that we might already be behind the power curve before we start. Sometimes it’s better to take two light loads instead of one heavy load. Being out of practice with a rusty skill set is no place to be if you’re flying on the edge of capability, yours and the aircraft’s. Get comfortable in your seat first and foremost. I would think any operator worth his insurance premium would not begrudge a familiarization flight or two. I think the days of “Learn it while you’re on the way to the field” should be behind us by now. It makes great stories, but lousy work and outcomes. I wish you all a fantastic, safe, productive and prosperous season! Fly well, and stay safe!

Thrush Switchback Ferry Flight to Brazil — Part 3 Sunrise before departure at Aeroporto de Puerto Rico.
A 20 | agairupdate.com
In the last edition I told you about the second part of my ferry flight between Fort Lauderdale and Puerto Rico. Following up, I will report on the next leg, Puerto Rico to Barbados. The island of Puerto Rico is one of those places that make us want to take a vacation, but there was nothing at that moment that I wanted more than to continue flying towards South America. Unfortunately, I still had an impasse to resolve. I could fly about 1,700 miles nonstop for 12 hours straight from Puerto Rico to Boa Vista and not have to worry about taking a Covid test. Or, fly from Puerto Rico to Barbados with a much shorter and safer flight leg, but with the inconvenience of having to comply with Covid examination protocols when arriving on the island. Passing through the Guyana region around
noon is a headache for sure because as we well know, the famous Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) where the Northern and Southern trade winds come together and often giant cumulus buildups over widespread areas form. It is not exactly the preferred scenario for those flying in the range of 10 or 12 thousand feet. The only way to get there earlier, when taking off from Puerto Rico, is to leave around 4 A.M. However, the sun rises at 6:45 (local time). Flying over the stilldark Atlantic Ocean didn’t sound like a good idea, considering it was my first time on that route. After pondering, I decided that it would be more prudent to deal with the bureaucracy imposed by the pandemic than to risk flight safety. I made plans for when I arrived in Barbados I would isolate myself in a hotel room. The idea ➤

sounds bad, but I didn’t need to stay more than one night in Barbados since it was not necessary to wait for the exam results to leave the island. I took off from Puerto Rico around 0630 with the sun rising and blue skies. With a headwind, the flight leg would be an estimated time of 5 hours and 15 minutes. After a few hours of flight, I heard my name on the radio. I thought maybe I was hearing things or that I had done something wrong for the controller to be calling me by name. Fortunately, I deciphered the “mystery”. In Saint Maarten is the Princess Juliana Airport. They have frequencies like Torre Juliana with approaches and departures also with the same name. So, the name “Juliana” was heard on the radio now and then. I confess that it gives me an almost childlike joy to know that there is an airport with my name! In fact, the Princess who lends her name to the airport, became Queen of the Netherlands. I confess that I like princess tales, but I wouldn’t trade my little “winged kingdom” for anything! My helmet is my crown! During most of the route, I flew in good weather and only a few detours to avoid meteorological conditions. As time does not forgive royalty or commoners, about 50 nautical miles from Barbados I encountered heavy cloud formations. I considered climbing to stay VFR. That’s when I came across something hitherto unprecedented for me, a Class A airspace that goes from level 085 to level 245. The tops of the cumulonimbus layer was about 10,000 feet. I went around the island from the west and then the northwest. I asked approach control for permission to climb to 10,000 feet because only then would I be able to see the airport. Being extremely helpful, the controller
authorized the cimb. Fortunately, it didn’t take long to leave the rain behind and I was able to start my descent to the airport. As many Carribean islands receive commercial flights, runways are long, paved and well prepared for most aircraft. At 13:32, the Thrush Switchback touched the ground in Barbados, where an entourage was already on hand to take me to the examination site. After the medical procedures, I had to wait for about three hours at the airport because the choice of transportation and overnight stay is made by the government. I also had to put on a locking bracelet. The bracelet’s function is to make the person easily identifiable by the police if they leave the quarantine. I was told that I couldn’t even go to the hotel reception. Unfortunately, I was housed in a somewhat undesirable location with a pool and sea view, but no Internet. I managed to pass the flight plan over the phone and notify my family that I had arrived well. I made the flight plan for Manaus, even though I knew weather there at the time of my arrival would be very bad. My alternate was Boa Vista airport. It is important to remember that this type of flight airport logistics must be taken into account, as not all locations are able to receive an aircraft on an international flight. So, Boa Vista was the perfect alternate for me with the necessary agencies for my arrival. In next month’s Part 4, I will tell you the end of that flight that today is part of the best memories I have! Also, I will take you on a journey over the Amazon jungle!

NTSB REPORTS Accident Synopses
NTSB Final Report 2020
Some accident reports are preliminary and the details may change from the original report.
A 24 | agairupdate.com
by Bill Lavender During the first months of each year, AgAir Update publishes the previous year’s accidents and fatality statistics. Providing this information earlier is not possible due to the delay of receiving data from the NTSB, even later this year assuming the government’s COIVD 19 concerns. Some accident reports are preliminary and the details may change from the original report. There are still nine incomplete reports from NTSB for Part 137 aircraft. AgAir Update takes all data related to agricultural aircraft operations as described by the NTSB, regardless whether the operation was actually operating under Part 137 at the time of the incident. This includes ag-aircraft operating Part 91 (ferry/reposition), mosquito control, cherry drying, etc. What this means for the reader is data from AgAir Update may not match data from NAAA or other sources that use different methods of calculation. AgAir Update categorizes accidents and fatalities with easy to read graphs. Comparisons between
type aircraft and geographical locations does not take into account the unknown number of hours flown or the number and type ag-aircraft registered in each state. Therefore, assumptions should not be made that any particular aircraft or state’s statistics are any worse or better than another.
TOTAL ACCIDENTS BY YEAR In 2020, there were 54 accidents, including one midair, and 12 fatal accidents with 13 deaths when including the midair that was reported by the NTSB compared to 67 accidents with 8 fatalities in 2019; less accidents but a higher number of fatalities. This accident number of 54 is the lowest in ten years with 99 the highest in 2011. However, 2020 exceeded any other previous year in 10 with 13 pilot fatalities with a total of 81 pilots killed in the last 10 years; an astounding number. Year 2013 with the best of all ten years with an accident-tofatality ratio of 4%, while 2020 was the worst year at 22.22%.
INTERNATIONAL
TOTAL ACCIDENTS IN 2020 BY STATE This year Arkansas had the most accidents with 7. There was an appreciable number of states with only one accident, 11 of 24 states reporting accidents. Only one accident separated these states from a perfect no-accident year. Several states are not listed because there were no accidents reported. Oddly enough, there were two accidents in Alaska. These can be contributed to aerial firefighting missions.
ACCIDENTS BY MONTH In 2020, the most accident prone month of the year, was July with 20 accidents. Summer is when most ag hours are flown. The months of July with 20 and June with 10 are months in 2020 with double digit numbers. Thirty of the 54 accidents in 2020 (55.5%) occurred in June and July. Compared to 2019, 27 of 67 accidents (40.2%) occurred in May and July.
ACCIDENTS BY AIRCRAFT Air Tractor came in first with the most accidents at 24 in 2020, followed by helicopters with nine. Obviously, the Air Tractor is the most numerous ag-aircraft in the ag-aviation fleet and would be expected to have the most accidents. According to NAAA’s 2019 Aerial Application Industry Survey (published in ➤ agairupdate.com | A 25
INTERNATIONAL
the winter 2020 edition of Agricultural Aviation magazine), the helicopter industry makes up 13% of the ag-aircraft fleet and were involved in 16% of accidents in 2020. Ag-Cat and Thrush nearly tied with eight and seven accidents respectfully. Examining the graph, “Accidents by Aircraft”, the accident rate seems to follow the number of aircraft in the fleet percentage-wise with the exception of the Ag-Cat. Why that is anyone’s guess. Maybe it is related to the Ag-Cat being a good aircraft to start out a green ag-pilot.
FATALITIES There were 12 fatal accidents in 2020. Six fatal accidents with seven fatalities in Air Tractors, two in Cessnas and helicopters and one each in an Ag-Cat and Pawnee. There may be speculation as to the survivability of any type of ag-aircraft. However, there are too many other underlying factors that cause an accident, or a fatality, to make assumptions.
MECHANICAL, NON-MECHANICAL AND UNKNOWN CAUSES AgAir Update reads each report to determine whether an accident is mechanical, nonmechanical, or unknown. There were 10 unknown causes of accidents in 2020. AgAir Update is A 26 | agairupdate.com
assuming this is mostly due to the final figures not yet updated. These should later be resolved and categorized as to whether mechanical or non-mechanical. In any case, the non-mechanical, which can be summarized as being caused by the pilot or weather (which is indirectly a pilot causation), outweigh the number of mechanical accidents, 34 versus 10 (3.4:1). No one person or thing can effectively change accident statistics in ag-aviation more so than the pilot. Of course, the operator can provide safer equipment in a safer working environment. PAASS can educate and create safety awareness. Even the government can regulate safety, to a degree. However, the ultimate responsibility of safety belongs to the pilot. There are plenty of tools available to improve the chances of an accident-free season. One of the best is participation in NAAA’s PAASS program. With its nationwide availability during most agpilots’ off-season, even during COVID, there is no excuse for not participating. An old timer operator once said, “Don’t bend my airplane.” Anyone who knew that operator understood his real intent was the pilot would not hurt himself if he didn’t bend the aircraft.

Can You Spot The Maintenance Dirty Dozen? Let’s Find Out We all make mistakes. That’s just human nature. But the reality we face in this industry is that aviation is unforgiving of human error. Even a slight mistake can cause a fatal accident. That’s why it is essential to know the Dirty Dozen — the 12 common causes of mistakes in the aviation workplace. You need to recognize their warning signs, and most importantly, learn how to avoid or contain their effects. You’ll find the Dirty Dozen list at bit.ly/ DirtyDozn. Take our short quiz to see if you can identify some of the most common maintenance mishaps in the workplace. Good luck! 1) You’re working on the horizontal stabilizer leading edge and instruct your new coworker to move the stabilizer up using the trim switch. He actuates the trim switch to “nose up” and drives the leading edge into the maintenance stand. Was his mistake a result of: A. Complacency B. Distraction C. A lack of communication The answer is C. Communication between technicians is vital, especially during procedures where more than one technician performs work on the aircraft. Never assume what a coworker will do or has done. Communicate the most important things at the beginning of a conversation and repeat them at the end. Use logbooks, checklists, or worksheets to remove any doubt. 2) Jill checks off an inspection checklist item because it’s not a critical component. She has never found any defects on all her previous inspections. Is this an example of: A. Fatigue B. Complacency C. Lack of knowledge The answer is B. Repetitive tasks, especially inspection items, are sometimes overlooked because they’ve been done so many times before without ever finding a fault. But don’t let down your guard; stay mentally engaged. Train yourself to expect to find errors, treat all inspection items with equal importance, use checklists, and never sign off on work you didn’t do.
3) You’re cutting and twisting safety wire and your cell phone rings. It’s your doctor with test results. You take the call and leave the floor. Your coworker steps in to complete the task and finds your safety wire pliers left behind, sitting on the engine. This scenario is the result of: A. Distraction B. Stress C. Pressure The answer is A and B. Distractions are everywhere in aviation maintenance, and they’re the number one cause of forgetting things. You can’t always prevent distractions, but you can mitigate the effects by finishing the job, including the lock wire or torque seal. If you can’t complete the job, unfasten the connection, mark it as incomplete for the next tech, or go back three steps when you restart the task. Shadow your toolbox for a quick inventory of all equipment before closing up panels, use checklists, and review all touched/opened/removed items. Stress is a factor here too. It can change your focus and emotional state in the blink of an eye. As a good practice, keep your cell phone off during maintenance and check it only on breaks. 4) Your boss tells you the aircraft must be done two days earlier than initially planned. Is this an example of: A. Lack of communication B. Stress C. Pressure The answer is C. Pressure to complete the task is always present in aviation. Don’t let pressure cloud your judgment or tempt you into lowering standards. Communicate your concerns or ask for help. Did you pick all the right answers? Learning to recognize and combat the Dirty Dozen is an essential step toward preventing errors and accidents. He emphasized that it makes a big difference, especially now, and to keep up the good work. It will be needed over the next Congress, as laws and tax increases could be considered that may be burdensome and unnecessary to agriculture. Following the breakfast, Ed Messina, the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) director of the Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP), and Amy Blankinship, chief of OPP’s Environmental Risk Branch, provided an update to the NAAA Board on federal pesticide policy. Both EPA representatives stated that through meetings and correspondence with NAAA and NAAA’s comments to proposed risk assessments on the aerial use of pesticides as part of the FIFRA reregistration ➤

AERIAL APPLICATORS ARE ESSENTIAL TO AGRICULTURE NAAA IS ESSENTIAL TO THE INDUSTRY
In Times of Crisis, You Need NAAA in Your Corner. When a crisis strikes, the National Agricultural Aviation Association rises to meet it head-on. When other industries were shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NAAA made sure the aerial application industry was deemed an “essential” business, clearing the way for you to conduct your needed and necessary services without delay. Not only did NAAA make sure that crop input services like the ones aerial applicators provide were listed as essential, your national association successfully petitioned to extend expiration dates for flight medical, commercial pesticide applicator, and numerous other needed licenses to conduct aerial application services so the industry could keep running when government agency offices were shuttered. process, the agency has made changes to the aerial risk profile and allowed more aerial uses and/or fewer restrictive requirements through mitigating boom length size and other drift reduction techniques. The EPA reps proposed following up on NAAA’s requests to work through numerous aspects of atmospheric displacement of aerially applied products as calculated by the AgDRIFT model that would lead to moving the agency away from the unrealistic risk overestimates of Tier 1 to Tier 3 of the model, which far more reflects aerial application setups today and provides a more realistic use profile. The two EPA representatives also stated that they would continue to identify gaps in the atmospheric models for unmanned aircraft, identify those risks when the data gaps are filled and run those risks through a labeling process for comment.
State of NAAA/Ag Aviation Industry After the EPA presented, 2021 NAAA President Mark Kimmel from Mississippi invited Andrew Moore, NAAA’s chief executive officer, to the podium to deliver his state of the association/industry report. Moore began by touting optimism with the agricultural economy stating that USDA has dropped 2020 corn estimates by 1.1 billion bushels to 14.192 billion bushels; soybeans by 35 million bushels to 4.135 billion bushels; and cotton by 2.14 million bales to 14.953 million bales. These tight supplies, a large China appetite bolstered by the Trump Administrations Phase 1 agreement for the Chinese to buy $80 billion worth of agricultural exports in the next two years, and dry South American weather make markets highly sensitive to demand spikes. Moore also mentioned agricultural trade might benefit as well, with the Biden Administration working on a U.S./U.K. trade agreement and by attempting to enter the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Moore then discussed policy issues and stated that the return of Tom Vilsack as USDA secretary under President Biden would likely result in an attempt to use the USDA’s Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) to create a “carbon bank” to pay producers for using sustainable farming practices to capture carbon in the soil. Former Secretary Sonny Perdue used the CCC to try to provide relief to farmers hurt by China’s trade boycott of U.S. agricultural products. It is possible that cover cropping could be classified as a sustainable farming method, which would be beneficial to aerial applicators. Moore stated that a negative proposal for the agriculture economy could be President Biden’s push for more electric vehicles, resulting in a drop in ethanol and corn production. Moore stated that President Biden’s selection as the administrator of the EPA, Michael Regan—formerly the head of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality—is known as a voice of reason. Regan has worked well with many agri-chemical companies based in North Carolina as well as animal producers. He will have to make some big decisions B 4 | agairupdate.com
and deal with pressure from environmental activists on the reregistration of products such as paraquat, chlorpyrifos and many other active ingredients coming up under FIFRA reregistration requirements. Switching gears, Moore brought up public relations issues and focused on the industry’s 100th anniversary and the multitude of events that are taking place to promote the agricultural aviation industry to the trade and news media. Moore mentioned receiving Disney and the Smithsonian’s permission to display the Air Tractor AT-400 aircraft converted to look like Dusty Crophopper, the main character of the 2013 movie Planes. Rusty Lindeman from Texas owns the plane and is donating the aircraft. An NAAA media event is scheduled for the Smithsonian’s Air & Space Museum, Udvar-Hazy Dulles Branch, Aug. 3, 2021, the official anniversary, with preanniversary celebrations to take place at EAA’s AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the preceding week. An official request has been made to AirVenture’s air show coordinator to have multiple ag aircraft models—from old to new—fly in the show. An Ag Day celebration also is being planned on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., over Columbus Day weekend. Glenn Martin is planning to bring his Jet Ranger helicopter with booms to display at the event. The National Agricultural Aviation Museum and Hall of Fame is also working on anniversary celebrations at its site in Jackson, Mississippi. The first draft of a book has been completed, illustrations from years of photographs are being paired with it and a publisher has been chosen. A draft timeline covering the 10 decades of advances and evolution of the industry is complete. Museum-quality exhibits of the timeline will be made for display at museums and for state ag aviation associations to purchase and use for their own promo-celebrations. An eightminute documentary was presented at the convention, a trailer that premiered on social media received over 50,000 views, and an upcoming 15-minute video of the industry’s history is currently in production. NAAA’s new 100th anniversary website, AgAviation100.com, features the accompanying timeline, videos, b-roll footage and a list of the 100th anniversary sponsors. Announcements to trade and news magazines, newspapers, social media and television sources will be sent informing them of the anniversary and industry information. Moore then delved into education and safety issues focusing on accident statistics. Sadly, he reported, the one accident reported so far in 2021 was fatal. In 2020 there were 50 ag aviation accidents, a record low, but 20% of those accidents were fatal. Moore also reported on the recently released 2019 FAA General Aviation (GA) Accident Survey, which once again showed a drop in the ag aviation accident rate since the PAASS Program premiered in 1999. The 2019 accident rate for the industry was 6.87 accidents per 100,000 hours flown. The accident rate before the PAASS Program hit the stage was ➤

9.34 per 100,000 hours. The industry has seen a 25.27% drop in accidents in the 21 years since PAASS began. Moore also mentioned that the accident rate would likely be down further if the program had full participation. For the 2019-2020 PAASS season, 1,593 of the approximately 3,400 ag pilots in the U.S. attended the PAASS Program. Moore stated that the 2019 ag aviation fatal accident rate was 0.69 fatalities per 100,000 hours versus the GA accident rate of 1.02 fatalities per 100,000 hours. Moore then stated that although the 2020 convention had fewer attendees—790 compared to 1,626 in 2019—it still resulted in $558,000 in net income. Attendee surveys were mostly positive, and no COVID cases were reported by anyone who traveled to the show. Due to COVID-19, Moore reported that 2021’s 100th anniversary show is looking to return to Savannah, rather than the previously scheduled Palm Springs, California, which is still deeply mired in COVID cases. Palm Springs will still be on the convention schedule but not until 2023. Switching to membership issues, NAAA concluded 2020 with 1,654 members. This is a 16% drop since 2018, which includes a 10% drop in operator members and a 21% drop in pilot members. The start of 2021 shows a 7% decline in members from last year. The total population of operators in the U.S. is 1,560, with an additional 2,028 non-operator pilots. Development is underway for some sort of Professional Aerial Applicator Safety Steward designation, which would require operators and pilots to be members and attend safety and stewardship education programs to qualify. Insurance underwriters and agri-chemical companies could embrace such a program with more competitive rates and usage for individuals earning such a designation. The next century will also be ripe with opportunity for aerial applicators to not only provide digital aerial images to facilitate making variable rate/precision applications but also to make those applications, Moore said. To support his point, he provided information from the July 2020 issue of CropLife magazine that showed significant projected growth in U.S. ag retailers conducting crop-imaging for precision ag/variable rate purposes. For example, in 2015, 57% of U.S. retailers were conducting aerial imaging services to make prescription maps for variable rate applications. By 2023 aerial imaging services are projected to be provided by 91% of retailers. Similarly, variable rate applications of fertilizers were provided by 69% of retailers in 2015 and are projected to be provided by 92% by 2023. Variable rate pesticide applications were provided by 27% of retailers in 2015 and are projected to be provided by 47% by 2023. Variable rate seed applications were provided by 50% of retailers in 2015 and are projected to be provided by 78% by 2023. Moore reiterated that this is a tremendous opportunity for the aerial application industry to diversify and grow by not only providing the variable rate application B 6 | agairupdate.com
services, but the aerial maps needed to prescribe the variable rates to the field.
Committee Reports Convention and Awards: The most important topic discussed was moving the 2021 Ag Aviation Expo from Palm Springs, California, to Savannah, Georgia, due to COVID delays in California and Savannah’s proven record from the 2020 convention. The board approved the move to return to Savannah for the 2021 Ag Aviation Expo. The Convention Committee recommended, and the board approved, working to contract having Savannah host the 2026 NAAA Ag Aviation Expo. The Convention Committee discussed Kickoff Breakfast ideas that included Hoot Gibson, John Stossel, Eric Mataxas and James Bradley. A decision will be made shortly. The committee also discussed the focus of the General Session, which likely will include a panel of industry veterans reflecting on the 100th anniversary and an ag futurist. The committee discussed future contracted conventions sites as follows: Dec. 6-9, 2021 – Savannah; Dec. 5-8, 2022 – Knoxville, Tennessee; Dec. 4-7, 2023 – Palm Springs; Nov. 18-21, 2024 – Fort Worth, Texas, and amended a previous motion to have Reno, Nevada, host the 2025 and 2028 conventions in November of those years. The committee also discussed Oklahoma City as a future convention site. NAAA tentatively plans to have its October 2022 board meeting in Oklahoma City, which will give the board a chance to look at the city and determine if it could be a future location of the Ag Aviation Expo. Also discussed were this year’s auction items, which will include a Pratt & Whitney Canada turbine engine and a twoseater, open cockpit Ag-Cat donated by Colorado’s Darrel Mertens. NAAA greatly appreciates both of these donators and all its auction donors. The Awards Committee reiterated that the deadline to submit nominations for the 2021 NAAA Awards is Sept. 10. The awards nomination form is available at AgAviation.org/ awards. It was also stated that 2020 awardees who were unable to make the 2020 convention will be recognized at this year’s awards banquet if they attend it. Budget & Finance: Mike Rivenbark, immediate past treasurer, delivered the association’s treasurer’s report in place of Treasurer Dwayne O’Brien, who could not attend due to contracting COVID-19. He reported that the total current assets of NAAA equal $5,100,823 as of the end of January 2021. He also presented the 2021-2022 budget, which includes a $114,818 deficit; however, this is due to overestimating expenses and underestimating revenues and includes over $40,000 in depreciation. Roughly $30,000 of the deficit is related to 100th anniversary expenses, including $47,000 that will be spent on public relations to promote the industry to the media and public. in prior years, but expenditures will be occurring this and next fiscal year. The board approved the 2021-2022 budget. Communications & Public Relations Committee: The committee discussed NAAA’s 100th anniversary communications initiatives, such as the public relations efforts, video, book, etc. The committee identified approximately 30 regional representatives that the media could contact for interviews about the 100th anniversary. Media training sessions will be conducted by former Leadership Training Program instructor and PR professional Steve Powell via Zoom to prepare NAAA’s designated spokespeople for possible media interviews during the industry’s centennial coverage. The committee also discussed advocacy projects, such as a documentary television show called Impossible Engineering that will air on Discovery’s Science Channel and feature a pilot flying a 1944 Stearman nicknamed “The Beast” for a segment on the Stearman’s role in ag aviation and aerial firefighting. Governing Documents Committee: The Governing Documents Committee presented a motion that the NAAA Board approved to make Florida’s Natural Orange Juice the official orange juice of NAAA. The committee chairman, Lee Turnquist of Florida, has always been partial to U.S. grown efforts, and Florida’s Natural is a solely U.S. cooperative that only uses Florida grown oranges in its juice. He is a former aerial applicator to Florida’s Natural’s product and has been playfully educating the board about this fact for years. With that said, Chairman Turnquist is also in talks with the Florida cooperative to obtain support in the form of advertising in NAAA’s magazine and sponsoring the 100th anniversary. This is an effort that could result in other agricultural commodity groups supporting NAAA. Government Relations Committee: Damon Reabe of Wisconsin, the committee chairman, reported that the FAA’s John Attebury provided a report, via Zoom, on several FAA issues, including an issue that has recently presented itself pertaining to fears that presidential TFRs in eastern Maryland, Delaware and other parts of the mid-Atlantic region will halt ag aviation activities. Attebury reported that flying in such TFRs may sometimes be allowed. Air Traffic Control is in charge of these situations, but the Secret Service has a lot to do with it when flights are allowed. There is a FSDO phone number associated with each TFR that may be used to request access to the TFR. If allowed, such instances require the use of a discreet transponder code and continuous communication with Air Traffic Control. Attebury also discussed EPA greenhouse gas emission regulations recently issued for aviation, stating they will only affect new aircraft models that first come into production starting January 2028. There are several exemptions to these regulations, including exemptions for special use aircraft, and it is believed that agricultural aircraft would be exempt. The FAA will be doing a rulemaking that will bring the EPA’s rule to B 8 | agairupdate.com
aircraft certification, so an opportunity for NAAA to comment on the FAA rule will be forthcoming. Attebury also reported on the FAA tower marking/tower location database rule that NAAA was instrumental in urging Congress to enact. He stated that the FAA rulemaking team is optimistic that a notice for proposed rulemaking will be out for public comment in 2021. The Government Relations Committee reviewed the FAA’s COVID-19 vaccination rule and reiterated the need to heed the 48-hour no-fly warning after receiving the COVID vaccine due to reported side effects after receiving the vaccination. The committee discussed the EPA paraquat reregistration effort. Chairman Reabe stated that an abundance of collaboration with NAAA, regulatory agencies, academics, commodity groups and registrants went into this reregistration effort. NAAA was instrumental in facilitating this cooperation, putting the EPA on notice for its poor risk assessment, which underestimated the importance of aerially applying the product and overestimated the risk assigned to the aerial use of the product. Also mentioned was a recent workshop of government, agri-chemical companies, academia and pesticide applicators on manned and unmanned drift modeling. NAAA made meaningful headway pushing the use of AgDrift Tier 3 inputs and wind-directional buffers, as well as emphasizing that drones need drift and efficacy data since no robust data exists. The workshop participants agreed a report would be out shortly. It will likely state that drones will be great in niche application markets like replacing backpack spraying, but broad applications will likely be questioned. Insurance and Safety & Federal Aviation Regulations Committee: A common theme throughout many NAAA committees was a discussion about the Knowledge and Skills Ad Hoc Committee and the development of essential information in which ag pilots should be well versed, also referred to as Airman Certification Standards (ACS) for ag pilots. Matt Hovdenes, chairman of this ad hoc committee and president of NAAREF, has done yeoman’s work developing a draft study guide. One proposed goal is to have the ACS used by ag aviation operations’ chief supervisors to administer biennial flight reviews for ag pilots. The FAA has stated that such a program could be run through its FAA Wings program. The PAASS Program would be an opportune format and could count as credit for the ground portion of the knowledge and skills test; a flight review could count for the flight portion. Discussion among these two committees, the Long Range Planning Committee and NAAREF is that insurance rates are increasing. The three NAAA committees and NAAREF would like to see insurance carriers work with the industry to come up with better rates for pilots who take legitimate steps toward more professional aviation safety and conservation stewardship education. This point was pressed by Insurance Committee Chairman and NAAA Vice President Jim Perrin. ➤

Long Range Planning Committee: The Long Range Planning Committee has discussed new resources for the association to pursue to provide steady funding for NAAA’s education, communication and advocacy programs for years. With a 2020 convention that brought in significantly less revenue (and almost didn’t occur) and membership declining, the committee brought a motion to the NAAA Board that was enacted that will charge non-members who attend the Ag Aviation Expo a convention registration fee that will also include the cost of an NAAA membership in their membership category. Membership Committee: The NAAA Membership Committee recommended and the board passed a motion providing longtime member Fletcher Sharp an honorary NAAA membership. Sharp recently retired from Covington Engines, was a longtime employee of Pratt & Whitney Canada and served on NAAA’s Board as propulsion representative for years. Museum Committee: Committee Chair Glenn Holloway stated that the National Agricultural Aviation Museum and Hall of Fame in Jackson, Mississippi, plans to do a significant event for the 100th anniversary hosted on one of the last two weekends in August. Several VIPs are on the list to be invited, including the Mississippi ag commissioner. It appears to be a two-day celebration that will be a family-friendly event on Day One with activities and possibly viewing Disney’s Planes. The second day will be geared more toward adults and would be a fundraising event. Chairman Holloway spoke to Jim Hirsch of Air Tractor about the Snow S-2A model aircraft. The S-2A will be at the 2021 Ag Aviation Expo and then go to the museum in Jackson. Pete Jones of Air Repair in Mississippi has donated the working engine and prop for the plane to be exhibited at the convention. A replacement engine and prop will be put on the plane once it is permanently donated to the museum. Jones plans to auction off the actual engine and prop and donate 100% of the auction proceeds to the National Agricultural Aviation Museum. In addition, a cutaway engine is being worked on for the museum that may be on loan to NAAA for the 2021 Ag Aviation Expo. Precision Agriculture Committee: The newly formed Precision Agriculture Committee, just beginning its second year, adopted the following mission statement: A committee to encompass new technologies pertaining to methods of aerial application and aerial imaging that improve current systems and methods for safely, precisely and effectively applying crop protection products, fertilizers and seeds. The committee also discussed its goal of fostering the development of an autonomous spray system for ag aircraft. This includes integrating technology like AIMMS, which gives real-time weather based on its onboard meteorological measurement system, into GPS systems. The Precision Agriculture Committee is encouraging allied industry members, such as Aventech, CapstanAg, Ag-Nav, Insero, etc., to work B 10 | agairupdate.com
together to integrate their products in addition to integrating the AgDrift atmospheric model into their spray system grouped technology. The committee also discussed ensuring the EPA is educated on all the technologies that measure and model the impact of weather on the potential for spray drift to encourage the EPA to adopt wind direction-based buffer zones. The committee also discussed prospective technologies five to 10 years down the road that will be commonplace as the application industry evolves. One such technology was see-and-spray technology. Although see-and-spray is not an economically viable technology now, it may be in 10 years, so it is one to keep a pulse on now. Research & Technology Committee: The Research & Technology Committee received an update from the USDA-ARS Aerial Application Technology Research Unit (AATRU). The AATRU’s high-speed wind tunnel will be completed within two months. They are also planning field studies looking at the best application height and boom width to maximize efficacy. Much of the discussion focused on developing new nozzle technology. A University of Nebraska Ph.D. student is conducting research to develop a new nozzle for aerial applications. NAAA representatives also met earlier this year with the AATRU to request they prioritize their projects to focus on developing a new nozzle for aerial applications that reduces fine, that they foster the development of an autonomous aerial sprayer, and that they document the environmental benefits of aerial applications. To further facilitate nozzle development, an Ad Hoc New Nozzle Development Committee was formed. Promotion of the committee in NAAA publications to solicit interest and the submission of ideas for new nozzles and nozzle bodies will be forthcoming. The committee also discussed creating a repository of aerial application data and substantive aerial research projects already conducted and making it available to NAAA members only through the members-only portion of NAAA’s website. The committee also discussed getting in touch with registrants to release data in their possession that would provide proof of aerial application’s efficacy and safety. Support Committee: The Support Committee’s Athena education program for aerial application operation’s support staff will focus on dealing with stress. They are also planning a Riverboat event at the 2021 Ag Aviation Expo and announced that their scholarship theme for 2021 is “What role does ag aviation play in producing a local commodity?” That information will be made available soon on the NAAA website and in NAAA publications. That is a summary of the many ideas discussed at NAAA’s spring board meeting. Much should be said complimenting NAAA’s board members for their devotion to the industry and their travels in the past year during the pandemic to plan and execute programs for the sole betterment of the agricultural aviation industry as it enters its second century.

Ag Aviation Models My Life Goals for 2021
As pilots, we depend on a single factor to continue our profession and that factor is called “being healthy”.
What am I doing here? That is a question I have asked myself more than once in my aviation career. Usually that question arises when complicated situations appear or involve difficulties. I recently asked myself that question while I was in the presence of a group of teenagers. On that occasion, the question addressed the uncertainty of how to speak to Millennials. Actually, I already knew the answer? At the beginning of 2020, I had set as one of my personal growth goals to spread the word about my ag-pilot profession and attract new generations to aviation in general. Last November, I had the honor and pleasure of being able to give a vocational guidance talk at a secondary school in my city in Uruguay. I was able to cross that item off the list of annual goals. Our profession and our life as a pilot require proactivity not only in the air, but also in our daily lives. That is why this article will surely have a lot of “Earth life”, based on three aspects of the life of an ag-pilot, health, personal development and giving back to others.
Health Our health determines our present and future lives as aviation professionals. According to leadership expert John Maxwell, “Many people use their health to generate wealth when they
B 12 | agairupdate.com
are young, then at the end of their lives use this wealth to try to buy health.” As pilots, we depend on a single factor to continue our profession and that factor is called “being healthy”. Most of us who work as ag-pilots renew our employment contract once a year. The same is true when we pass our physical exam. The Captain of Corporate Aviation and excellent writer, Ivan Luciani, makes us reflect in his magnificent book, An Aviator’s Journey: Tales of a Corporate Pilot about the reality of losing our pilot’s license, wondering what if ...? What happens if the engine stops? What happens if I have to land again with a full hopper? Many of us prepare and have a plan for what happens if; but what if I lose my license and can’t fly anymore? “The idea of not being able to fly anymore is simply too painful to understand. Even so, we owe it to ourselves and our families to consider the possibility and develop a contingency plan,” Luciani says.
Personal development We could always do something else besides flying. Instead, we should set personal growth goals based on short and medium term goals. One of the sectors hardest hit by the pandemic was the airlines. Pilots, highly skilled with thousands of hours, lost their jobs overnight. They lost the safety net that supported their families.
UNITED STATES
I have three questions for you: What? When? and How? What else would you like to do in your profession or outside of it? When would you like to do it? And finally, how to achieve it? These questions are a good exercise to work towards a contingency plan. What is your plan for professional and personal growth? Growth prevents personal and professional stagnation. Your growth impacts your life and your work directly. Only through continuous improvement can we reach our full potential. There are three steps needed to achieve our goals: 1) Define what I want to achieve, 2) Draw up a plan as specific as possible, 3) Focus on the result and not on the conditions and circumstances.
Give back to others Nobody likes to be around people who only think about themselves. Generous people have no vanity. They lack jealousy. They have no reservations against their colleagues and for those who ask for help. As pilots we can mentor those who desire to fly ag. We can tell them about the difficulties and also the rewards of our profession. When we are busy giving to others and helping them succeed, there is no room for selfishness. Make yourself known to your friends and colleagues as a trustworthy person. Let your friends come to you if they need an honest opinion. Be grateful to your family, friends, and your community. Help others who are struggling with difficulties that you have already overcome. Connect with people who will share their story. Offer to help them in any way. It is incredibly satisfying.

Facts, not words When you are in the cockpit, you are 100% in charge and enjoy the responsibility. We should also enjoy the journey of professional personal development. Look for growth environments. Take your time planning and growing. If you spend an hour a day for five years doing something, surely you will be an expert at it. There is no substitute for hard work and discipline. There are rewards when you achieve your goals. Due to different circumstances, by action or omission, there are three classes of ag-pilots; those who “pay” to fly, those who are paid to fly and those who pay not to fly. What category are you in and where would you like to be? Act like the person you want to become. Real success comes from with yourself. Martin da Costa Porto is an Uruguayan ag-pilot and ag-pilot instructor. He has over 20 years experience flying ag and over 3,000 hours of flight instruction. He currently flies an AT-402B turboprop Air Tractor in Uruguay.

SPE Electrostatic Introduces Electrostatic Nozzle Bodies
The aircraft is equipped with two small control boxes drawing less than five amps total.
B 16 | agairupdate.com
Take charge with your favorite spray tips, 80- and 40-degree flat fans or disc/core with the power of electrostatics. Various independent research studies by USDA ARS Aerial Application Research Center at College Station, Texas demonstrate that electrostatic charged droplets produce positive results. The new nozzle body has excellent insulation qualities and easily replaceable electrodes for the different spray tips. Now at one to five gallons or more per acre you can improve coverage and reduce drift by adding a charge to the droplets in the spray cloud. The smaller the droplet the greater the charge the greater the attraction to the plant canopy. How it works: The aircraft is equipped with two small control boxes drawing less than five amps total. One induces a positive charge on the right side of the aircraft and the other induces a negative charge on the left side with up to 10,000 volts on spray droplets without changing the chemistry of the product being applied. Why positive and negative? In order for the droplets to be charged they have to be released from a neutral body (which is the aircraft). If it was a positive charge only, the whole aircraft would be positively charged so the spray droplets would not be charged by the electrode. By adding the negative charge, the aircraft then becomes neutral. Both positive and negative charged droplets are then attracted to the earth which is a neutral body. The plants are grounded to the earth so they attract the droplets first. There is also a Coriolis wrap around effect that places a number of small droplets on, around, and under the leaves. Another benefit is that droplets with the same charge repel each other so there is less coalesce of smaller droplets joining two together to make larger ones in flight and also less droplets stacking on top of one another on the leaf surface. This greatly improves the area covered. “This will be year fifty as a pilot in my aerial application business in North Dakota. I operate two
Turbine Thrushes and a helicopter. Three seasons ago I installed the SPE Electrostatic system kits on all three aircraft. I have had excellent results on spraying thousands of acres of wheat, canola, peas, lentils, corn, soybeans, and sugar beets. I believe this technology is a great tool to keep us in business by helping to keep the spray droplets on target. I especially appreciate this when applying herbicides.” - Rick Marburger SPE Electrostatic, a division of Travicar which started operating in southern Brazil in 1967 making replacement parts and accessories for agricultural aircraft for South America and other countries. They currently manufacture the spraying system components for the new Ipanema ag-aircraft built by Embraer. They also make all the replacement spray system components for Cessna, Air Tractor, Piper and Thrush in Brazil. Other products in production are rotary atomizers and GPS systems. SPE Electrostatic now has over 5000 installations of the latest electrostatic technology mounted on orchard sprayers, field ground sprayers, helicopters, and all ag-aircraft models in South America. Sales of the electrostatic installation kits are rapidly increasing. Electrostatic technology is also currently being used for spraying disinfectants in airline interiors, hospital rooms and school rooms because it promotes the even coverage of droplets for controlling the Covid-19 virus. Recently I saw a post on Facebook asking who the pilot was that was featured in the movie “The Grace of Jake”. Terry Haynes answered stating that it was him. I thought this was rather fascinating and of course I Googled it and reviewed the trailer. I thought it was so cool that one of my customers (as well as a friend) had been featured in a movie made in a town about 20 miles from my home. I reached out to him to see if he would let me write about it and of course he was happy to help. Terry owns “Haynes Flying Service” in Palestine, AR. (L-R) Actor Lew Temple and Terry Haynes He was asked by writer/producer Chris Hicky to fly for the actor as an ag pilot in a short film that he wrote. Chris was from Forrest City, AR (very close to Palestine) and used “Kickstarter” to help fund the project released in 2015. The premise of the story is “Ex-inmate and wandering musician Jake travels to a small town in Arkansas intent on exacting revenge from his father but begins to unravel a complicated family history as he befriends the locals.” The film was submitted to the Short Film Festival. Terry said that he recently happened to see the film show up on the “Starz” cable network for about six months. My husband Jerry and I recently watched it on Amazon Prime Video. Two notable stars were Jordin Sparks (American Idol winner) and Jake La Botz (blues singer, songwriter and actor). Terry mentioned that Jordin was continually coming and going because of other projects. Lead actor Jake La Botz did a good job especially with his musical skills. He also noted that actor Dorian Wilson had a security guard due to his status. What I found interesting was that most of the crew stayed at a local hunting club and the people ➤

Since there was only one camera, they had to take multiple shots. Terry said they also had a camera inside his plane and it showed his beard beneath the visor. Fortunately, the actor he was portraying also had a beard, so it worked out great. He mentioned that the character of the ag pilot was originally going to be “Henry Hayes”, but they decided to change it to “Henry Haynes” to be able to use the Haynes Flying Service logo displayed throughout the movie. As Jerry and I watched the movie, it was so cool to see many of the areas that we are familiar with in St. Francis County. We have stopped by so many flying services throughout the county and I felt like I was right there with them. I am proud that Terry Haynes represented our industry well. The Move Westward — Chapter Three continued…
Ramp shot of M & M Air Service Stearman lineup in the 1950s.
B 22 | agairupdate.com
It was spring along the Coastal Bend in Texas and the watered rice paddy on the Dishman and Sisk Farm near Amelia shimmered in the morning sun. The date was April 9, 1946. In the cockpit of a 220 horsepower Stearman with a 700-pound capacity hopper, pilot K.W. “Kinky” Shane was ready for the first successful seeding of rice by air in Texas. As the mists cleared and the flagmen took their places, Shane took off and swept down on the 90acre field. His first pass revolutionized the Coastal rice growing industry. From that point on, farmers could get a head start on weeds, seed their crop at the proper time, and fertilize when necessary. Rice immediately attained a position of importance approaching that of cotton. Aerial cropping became a necessity rather than a luxury for planters throughout the region. Airplane crop dusting was actually an old story in Texas. Pioneer operators like “Pappy” Blackwell, Heard Cardin, “Slats” Rogers, and Curtis Quick had been going strong as far back as the late 1920s.
Others were engaged in ag flying, at least on a part-time basis, all through the Rio Grande Valley. As far back as 1929, clover had been successfully seeded by air on the Ed Hebert farm in Jefferson County. However, the great “explosion” in the industry did not occur until directly after World War II. Shane and his friend Gilbert Mapes were among the pioneers who entered the game at this time. Funk & Burnham Aviation Service in Dallas had procured Shane’s services and went to work building a 220 horsepower Continental Stearmanthe legendary Number 21 that later did the first Texas rice seeding job. Mapes and Shane contacted two brothers, Fields and N.W. “Poley” Mitchell, whose names became legendary in ag flying circles. They purchased Number 21 and subsequently flew the rice job. Thus was born M & M Air Service, one of the most influential ag flying firms ever to be organized. The Mitchells were superb salesmen with initiative, nerve, and the time to invest heavily in the fledgling ag flying business. Under their ➤

direction M & M Air Service grew rapidly and established itself as a leader both in Texas and nationally. The Stearmans, which made up the early fleet, were increasingly driven with higher horsepower as engines and new techniques became available. By 1950 M & M was operating one of the largest and most modem ag fleets in America. As the natural result of the Mitchell brothers’ success, new ag flying firms mushroomed in Texas, particularly in the Beaumont area. They included Farm Air Service, organized by Jim Sedberry and Norman Chase. “Red” Allen and Harry Kellam were affiliated with this firm for a period of time. Eventually Sedberry sold out to A.C. Wagley. But the firm continues today, operated at Nome, Texas, by one of Chase’s sons, Donald. During this period of rapid agricultural aviation expansion, Kinky Shane returned to Funk & Burnham until 1947, when he left and organized Shane Air Service. Shane initially had two partners: Floyd Smith and Belford Duplantis. They eventually sold their interests to Walter Burrell. Shane and Burrell operated this firm until about 1952, when Shane retraced his steps to M & M, then a giant in the industry. Mapes, one of the founders, eventually sold his interest to the Mitchell brothers, making M & M Air Service strictly a Mitchell operation. Tragically, Fields Mitchell was killed in a freakish gas accident from a pipeline leak in 1964. Ownership of the firm passed to Fields’s son George. Anyone remotely involved in agricultural aviation knows George Mitchell and is aware of his contributions to the industry.
In an interview several years ago, Mitchell stated, “M & M Air Service is perhaps the largest independentlyowned ag flying outfit in the world and we’re proud of it. My dad and my Uncle Poley devoted much of their adult lives to the business and I’ve done the same ever since I was big enough to care. “It’s been loaded with headaches and even some heartaches. But I still love it and hope that my sons will take an interest in it and keep it going after I’m gone.” Pilots and shop men play a tremendous role in any firm’s success and M & M was no exception. Pilots like Earl West, J.K. West, Johnny Killough, Jack Hardin, Charles Trickey, Earl Atkins, and Eldred Chester were integral parts of M & M Air Service and elevated the standards of ag flying a great deal. Shop foreman Eddie McCain, who remains active with the firm, is an innovative maintenance man and equipment builder and with the help of fine mechanics like James Rutledge, the M & M fleet was a model for other firms to follow. Early in his career, George Mitchell began displaying a strong interest in national agricultural aviation affairs. This became very evident in the early 1960s, when the Federal Aviation Administration began regulating agricultural aviation. The original FAA proposal, known as “Part 55,” was distributed and discussed nationwide. George Mitchell was in the middle of such discussions, wherever they might be. He became an active supporter of the idea of a national association for aerial applicators ➤

and subsequently one of the first presidents of the National Agricultural Aviation Association in 1973. His career has been highlighted by numerous national and state honors and awards. His involvement continues in the present and he recently contributed a mint-condition Stearman aircraft to the National Agricultural Aviation Museum in Jackson, Mississippi. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, agricultural aviation expansion was also very evident in the Rio Grande Valley. Notables included Bill Kuby at Alamo, Ken Medders at San Benito, Jack LeClair at Pharr, Charlie McMillan at
Edinburg, Dave Setter at Weslaco, and Lloyd Nolen and his partner Glen Acord at Mercedes. Nolen and Acord operated a sizable fleet of planes under the name of Mercedes Dusting Service and became widely known and respected. At one point, Nolen also founded the Confederate Air Force, a singular achievement of which he is justly proud. Later, Nolen bought Acord’s interest in the firm and continues to operate it. In the early 1950s, Mercedes Dusting Service operated in both the Mississippi Delta and Texas. Its Mississippi move coincided with the peak cotton season.

1948 — first ag pilot to apply toxaphene spray. 1949 — formed Mid-Continent Aerial Sprayers. 1959 — named the Grumman “Ag-Cat”. 1967 — assisted in founding the National Agricultural Aviation Association, and was elected the first president of NAAA, also received the first Agrinaut Award for his role in the formation of NAAA. 1979 — awarded the NAAA William O. Marsh Safety Award. 1986 — awarded the NAAA Outstanding Service Award. 1987 — Mid-Continent awarded the Agrinaut Award. 1991 — became a member in the prestigious Falcon Club.
Dick Reade began his aviation career upon entry into the U.S. Army Air Corps Flight Program. Beginning in a PT-17 Stearman aircraft, Dick progressed through flight training to become a pilot flying an F-5 (P-38) reconnaissance in the Pacific Theater during World War II. With the end of the war, Dick was released from active duty and then completed a degree in agriculture at Iowa State University. Dick was able to combine his love for aviation with the field of agriculture in 1948, by becoming an ag pilot with M & T Aerial Spray Co. in Cedar Falls, Iowa where he became the first pilot to apply toxaphene by air during an army worm run. In 1949, Dick formed Mid-Continent Aerial Sprayers, located at Traer, Iowa and in 1951, moved the company’s operations to Hayti, B 30 | agairupdate.com
Missouri. Throughout the 1950’s, Dick operated MidContinent as an aerial application company and developed a quickchange, liquid/ dry combination system for the 450 hp Stearman aircraft which were in abundant use at the time. Mid-Continent performed several large state and federal spray projects, including budworm control in Canada operating more than 50 Stearmans, and served as project manager for many years during this period. In 1959, Mid-Continent became the first Grumman Ag-Cat distributor and it was Dick who suggested the name “Ag-Cat” for the aircraft. During the 1960s, Dick served as membership chairman and chairman of the ag committee of the National Aviation Transportation Association. In 1968, many ag operators organized and formed the National Agricultural Aviation Association and Dick was elected its first president. He was awarded the first “Agrinaut” award by the NAAA for exemplary service in establishing and organizing the association. Dick has remained an active member throughout NAAA’s history. Dick’s company, Mid-Continent Aircraft Corporation, was awarded the “Agrinaut” award once again in 1987 for development of its hopper rinse system which allows the aircraft to be rinsed and the rinseate then dispersed over the target field. Dick also received the William O. Marsh Safety Award in 1979 for significant achievements in safety and the Outstanding Service Award in 1986 for outstanding service to ag aviation. Dick worked

diligently to reduce workman’s compensation rates in several Delta region states, helping to bring down these rates to livable levels, sometimes as much as 75-80% of the base rate. When the EPA decided to implement certification in various states, Dick assisted in consulting to establish reasonable guidelines for the core manual and the ag aviation segments. He has been a member of the Missouri Governor’s Ag Council and Pesticide committee, is a Paul Harris Rotary Foundation Fellow, and a member of the El Kahir Shrine in Iowa. Dick has been an active member of the Foundation Board of the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum and the National Agricultural Aviation Museum in Jackson, Mississippi since its beginning in 1980. Dick was one of the original group working with Commissioner Jim Buck Ross to establish this focal point museum for the history of ag aviation and has been on the board ever since its inception. He has served on the committee for the National Agricultural Aviation Hall of Fame Golf Tournament, as well. During the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, under Dick’s leadership, Mid-Continent has supplied the worldwide ag aviation industry with over 2,500 new and used aircraft. MidContinent, with its partners Dennie Stokes and Larry Cookemboo, presently operate several ag aircraft providing aerial application services in the United States. Further, Mid-Continent provides sales and services to ag operators in over 50 countries throughout the world. Dick’s foresight and dedication to agricultural aviation for over 50 years has been the primary force in building Mid-Continent into one of the world’s largest and best known agricultural aviation organizations. His “PlaneTalk” articles in Mid-Continent’s Planegram have been shared by ag operators around the world and his devotion and dedication have given the ag aviation industry an invaluable benefit. NAAHOF Inductees is a series of articles featuring the inductees to the National Agricultural Aviation Museum’s Hall of Fame. Although some of the information is limited, including in some cases unknown induction years, it is the best compilation available from The National Agricultural Aviation Museum, the NAAHOF Nominations Board of Directors, the NAA Museum Board of Directors and Mabry Anderson’s book, Low and Slow. Three Thrush in Northern Argentina by Bill Lavender
Luis A. Curá Fumigaciones Aéreas’ Turbo Thrush is flying over Ingenio Ledesma’s sugar cane fields using CP Nozzles close to Oran, Argentina.

ORAN, ARGENTINA — It is quite a distance to travel in Argentina from Bahia Blanca north to Oran; it is best if traveled by air line. Even so, it took all day, of course the late departure due to fog in Bahia Blanca was the main reason. With an overnight stop in Salta and an interesting drive to Oran in a rental car, I was finally able to meet my friend Luis Curá of Luis A. Curá Fumigaciones Aéreas. When I told Luis that I would only be able to stay for a few hours, I could see the disappointment in his eyes. Luis had invited me to visit him when I first started traveling to Argentina several years ago. Until now, I had not been able to make the long trip north to Oran. Even so, I was
still not able to stay as long as Luis would have liked. But, all the same, he was a gracious host during my short visit. Luis Curá began ag flying when he was 20 years old. After two decades, in 1991, he bought the company he had been flying with from José Martin and formed Luis A. Curá Fumigaciones Aéreas in Oran. The company had two Argentinean-built Pawnees. In 1993, Luis added a third Pawnee. His company had begun to fly over cotton and was becoming very busy. Cotton was new to the region, only being introduced in 1993. Before, the major crops were cane, soybeans and corn. Work for the company began expanding at a rapid rate. “It was crazy,” says Luis, from so much work from the ➤

cotton acres and two large cane companies. In 1996, Luis bought his first Ayres Turbo Thrush from Eduardo Siper of Siper Aviacion in Buenos Aires. Eduardo must have been a good salesman, for only from his advice and the favorable advice from Erminio Rodriguez, Luis bought the Thrush before ever flying one! Luis must not have regretted the purchase, because he now owns three Ayres Turbo Thrush, all powered by Garrett engines. The first Thrush Luis bought was a dual cockpit version, the first dual cockpit Thrush to arrive in Argentina, powered by a TPE331-6 with a 510-gallon hopper. Luis’ thoughts were for the safety of his pilots, with the dual cockpit Thrush allowing for training. The other two Thrush Luis added are powered by the TPE331-1 engine and have 400-gallon hoppers. Because the company was growing so quickly, Luis had to take the role of manager instead of chief pilot. This was a difficult decision for Luis. But, it was necessary to structure a successful company. With the three Thrush, the company is capable of flying over 685,000 acres in a season (1999), compared to only 210,000 acres with three Pawnees. In 2000, the demand for aerial applications was cut by half in Oran. No cotton was planted due to losses by cotton growers, many who had to file bankruptcy. A lot has changed when it comes to farming in Oran. Five years ago there were large areas of bananas, the only region in all of Argentina

that grows bananas. Now, Ecuador imports into Argentina depressing the Argentinean banana market to less than 12,000 acres, 10% of the acreage from the past. Supposedly, new regulations are being introduced in Argentina to limit imports. Now, the major crop for the region is white beans with about 210,000 acres planted. Although, the cotton production infrastructure is still in place. This means that should the commodity price of cotton return to a profitable level, cotton again would be king. In 1999, cotton was approximately 70% and beans 25% of the acres flown by Luis’ company. During the 2000 season, there was an abrupt turn about with beans 75%, other crops 25% and no cotton acres being treated. Where there were cotton fields before, now are bean fields. However, the bean fields do require treatment by air. Luis’ Thrushes will make about three to five applications over an acre of beans, much less than the eight to twelve applications needed for cotton. The beans are first treated with a siteprep application of glyphosate in December and January. In February a pre-emergent application might be applied, right at the cracking stage. In a wet year, fungicides will be applied. Usually, the beans will receive an insecticide application for white flies, sometimes with a foliar feeding fertilizer added to the mix. Depending on the need, often a grower will make one or two applications, seven to ten days apart, of Flex, a selective herbicide for beans, over the top. Some growers ➤

use gramoxone as a last application in April or May to defoliate the leaves of the beans. Luis noted that for the first time the sugar companies are using the aircraft more on cane. There is a tremendous number of acres of cane in the Oran region. Should the cane growers adopt the aerial application policy of applying glyphosate as a growth regulator (forcing the cane to produce more sugar), the applications would help replace the loss of cotton spraying. Oran is Luis Curá’s base of operation. The company uses about ten additional runway sites that are on growers’ land. More and more of Luis’ operation is from airstrips other than Oran. Sometimes the residents of Oran will complain about the smell of the chemicals, although the Luis Curá Fumigaciones Aéreas operation is one of the cleanest in Argentina. Luis has contemplated relocating to an area about 60 miles to the northeast, away from the city and closer to the bean fields. Although Bolivia is only about 150 miles to the north from Oran, Luis’ company does not make any applications in that country. However, all the applications that Luis Curá Fumigaciones Aéreas make are very exact, using the Satloc GPS system with a moving map. Just recently, in 1999, the company added the units providing printouts to the company’s customers, giving a detail map of each application. Luis believes the Satloc GPS is an ideal sales tool, proving to his customers how accurately an aerial application can be made. Each grower receives his invoice in a folder that includes a color printout of the application. The company pilots, Eduardo Pais, Carlos Lanata, and Alberto Cardinali, each flying an Ayres Turbo Thrush, typically are dispersed on a mission that will be a 1750-acre field. Using the AU5000 Micronair atomizers, rates of two gallons per acre for fungicide on beans and three gallons per acre
for fungicide on bananas are the norm. Insecticide applications are usually made at one gallon per acre. With glyphosate and other herbicides, Luis switches his pilots’ aircraft dispersal system to the CP Nozzles, that the company recently bought from ArAvia, based in Venado Tuerto, this year. The glyphosate applications are made at 1.5 gal/ ac containing as much as two quarts of glyphosate per acre in the mixture. Before CP Nozzles, Luis’ aircraft were outfitted with Spraying Systems nozzles oriented straight back for herbicide work. After the articles Luis has read (AAU), and discussing the matter with others, Luis believes his company will be better able to minimize drift, while giving his customer a superior application using the CP Nozzles. If there was one thing in common that I noticed about the last three aerial application companies I visited in Argentina; Fumagro Trabajos Aéreos y Terrestres, Fumigaciones Rodriguez and Luis Curá Fumigaciones Aéreas, it was their marketing skills. Each company devoted much time and money to market their company to their customer. I noticed extremely clean operations with signs and flags not only designating the companies’ locations, but saying good things about the company and their customers. Then, I noted, each company used GPS to reinforce to their customers the professionalism of their pilots. And, the use of brochures and other gifts, like key chains, logo dinner plates, hats and all the things a grower likes to receive as a thank you for their business. In Latin America, the operation of a turbine aircraft requires a lot of acres to be flown during a season and at a reasonable price. Operating a successful ag flying service is obviously more than climbing in the cockpit and flying to the field with a full load and returning empty in as short a time as possible. A successful company addresses all the parameters of doing business with its customers. And, Luis Curá has done that very well. Adopting from a disastrous end to cotton spraying, to working the bean and cane fields to his company’s advantage. When the acres seemingly are no longer available, the really good businessmen immerse themselves in their business and devise a solution.

The Self-Destructive Sin of Unforgiveness
Unforgiveness and bitterness are often hidden sins. No one may notice your bitterness and unforgiveness at first, but the poison is doing its hidden work inside your heart.
B 38 | agairupdate.com
We’re all guilty of offending other people, and we’ve all been offended by other people; that’s the facts of living in a sinful world. But as Christians we’re told to be forgiving people. It’s impossible to live a victorious Christian life with unforgiveness in our life. It isn’t the offense that destroys relationships, it’s the inability to forgive that destroys relationships. Unforgiveness is poison to the soul. Unforgiveness is a sin that locks the unforgiving person in their own self-made prison. It’s as bad as being enslaved to mind-altering drugs or alcoholism. Unforgiveness is a sin that will destroy its own container. Unforgiveness is a sin that will destroy you like an incurable cancer. Unforgiveness is a sin that causes bitterness in our life. The Bible warns about bitterness: “Looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled” (Hebrews 12:15). The word “bitterness” comes from the Greek word “pikria.” It’s used in Acts 8:23 of a condition of extreme wickedness, “gall of bitterness” or “bitter gall.” Romans 3:14 says it’s a mouth full of cursing and bitterness. Ephesians 4:31 says its “bitter” hatred; and in Hebrews 12:15 it’s a root of “bitterness,” producing “bitter” fruit. In Deuteronomy 32:33 and Job 20:16, it represents the deadly “poison” or “venom” of poisonous snakes. Jesus said, “Whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses” (Mark 11:25-26). This isn’t about our eternal salvation, that’s secure when we put our faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. This is about
our being blessed or disciplined by God (Hebrews 12:7-11). God will not hear our prayers when we have unforgiveness in our life (Isaiah 59:1-2). People often say: “I don’t get mad; I get even.” People mistakenly believe that their bitterness and refusal to forgive will make the other person suffer. But it’s the unforgiving person that suffers! The Bible says, “Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord” (Romans 12:1719). “Unforgiveness” doesn’t yield the right of vengeance to the Lord; the bitter person wants to become their own god and becomes his/her own worst enemy—destroying their self. Unforgiveness and bitterness are often hidden sins. No one may notice your bitterness and unforgiveness at first, but the poison is doing its hidden work inside your heart. Unforgiveness is usually a result of ungodly pride and self-righteousness. Unforgiveness is often the sin that’s committed against those we’re the closest to and dearest to us. There’s the sayings “Familiarity breeds contempt” & “Why do we always hurt the ones we love.” Unforgiveness is often a family sin. Husbands won’t forgive their wives; wives won’t forgive their husbands; children won’t forgive their parents and parents won’t forgive their children. Peter tells us, “Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered” (1 Peter 3:7). If this is true for husbands and wives, then it’s true for everyone, married or

not. It’s hard to pray for someone when we hold a grudge toward them. Unforgiveness among fellow believers is common; Christians who will not talk to each other, cannot even look at each other, and wouldn’t dare sit on the same side of the auditorium. Pastors who will not forgive church members, and believers who will not forgive their pastor. It’s easy to see why there’s so many prayerless and powerless churches! The Bible says, “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you…Forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection”(Ephesians 4:31-32; Colossians 3:13-14). The forgiveness of people for their sins toward us will never make a wrong right. The hurt, pain, and memory is still there, but even if someone doesn’t apologize, we must release them so we won’t bring our self into the bondage of unforgiveness. Being bound in the prison of unforgiveness is a sad way to live our life. Even if the abuser repents, sometime the abused still holds on to the hurt that’s been done to them, which is only putting themselves in the prison of unforgiveness. Only the power of the Holy Spirit can give us the grace to truly forgive. Someone has said, “Forgiveness is agreeing to live with the consequences of another person’s sin. Forgiveness is costly; we pay the price of the evil we forgive. Yet you’re going to live with those consequences whether you want to or not; your only choice is whether you will live in the bitterness of unforgiveness or the freedom of forgiveness. That’s how Jesus forgave you—He took the consequences of your sin upon Himself. All true forgiveness is substitutional; because no one really forgives without bearing the penalty of the other person’s sin.” Forgiveness is extending mercy to those who have harmed us. It’s the spiritually strong and spiritually brave person who knows how to forgive. We’re to make a constant effort to forgive so that we can build a forgiving mindset in our brain. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:21-23). Living a lifestyle of forgiveness is commanded for Christians! “Forgive as the Lord forgave you” (Colossians 3:13). We can stop forgiving others when Jesus Christ stops forgiving us.

Air Tractor VP Finance Retires After 31 Years
David Ickert’s legacy is Air Tractor’s worldclass financial team.
Olney, Texas -- After 31 years of service, Air Tractor Vice President of Finance David Ickert has retired. Ickert’s contributions to the agricultural aircraft manufacturer’s success range from creating a world-class financial team to cementing Air Tractor’s reputation as a trustworthy partner to customers and financial institutions alike, says Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch. “One of the first things David Ickert did was to take over managing the company’s finances. This freed our founder Leland Snow to focus on engineering groundbreaking airplanes like the AT-802,” Hirsch says. A few years later, Ickert spearheaded Air Tractor’s international financing Initiative. Ickert and his wife Marilynn returned to Olney in 1976. It was Marilynn who initially went to work for Air Tractor. In 1989, David joined her. “Being an engineer, Leland was a very precise person,” Ickert recalls. “He was certainly not one to do anything halfway, but it stretched his time to do all the engineering, all of the marketing, and then all of the accounting and the finance. I think he had just reached a point that he was ready to bring in some help.” David not only assumed the accounting and finance role, but it quickly became apparent that Ickert was an excellent fit for a company that thrived on innovation and intellectual curiosity. “David is always reading and keeping up with the markets, doing research, and figuring out what’s next, and how our airplanes fit into that,” Hirsch notes. “Ickert’s ability to organize the finance and accounting helped provide really helpful strategic insights for our very specialized Company.” Ickert also contributed to strengthening Air Tractor’s rock solid financial reputation, but for Ickert that was merely his job. “It’s no different from the airplane that Leland designed and produced,” Ickert says. Customers know what they’re getting when they purchase an Air Tractor airplane. And in the area of the business that

I’ve been involved with, I hope we’ve been able to create the same confidence with financial institutions, insurance companies, suppliers and others we work with. As an organization, I think people know what we say and what we do is gospel,” he adds. “We’ve built a reputation. I am pleased that I have been able to play a part in an organization that is respected and well thought of.” Under Ickert’s leadership, Air Tractor established an international financing team that’s respected across the globe. “Leland was proud of what David did, particularly in the export finance,” says Hirsch. “Leland was the one that said to David, ‘If we can figure out how to get financing to people abroad, we could sell more airplanes.’ That was the impetus that sent David off on the trail of figuring out how to get a farmer in another country a loan to buy an airplane.” “The international financing program has ➤ agairupdate.com | A 29

changed Air Tractor for the better,” Hirsch says. “In the early 1990s, we exported just a few planes. Now, export is much bigger. A lot of this export growth is based on the market development stewarded by David Ickert and the team that continues to do this important work at Air Tractor.” What does retirement look like for Ickert? “I have seven grandkids, so chasing them around and watching their activities is a high priority,” Ickert says. Longtime hobbies of book, coin, and baseball memorabilia collections will receive attention, too. “Marilynn has ‘encouraged’ me to organize that stuff, and that’s going to take some time.” “We can’t thank David enough for his hard work and dedication, the long hours,” Hirsch says. “He’s been passionate about our business. There’s nothing more one can ask of a team member.” Jeremy Prather, who joined Air Tractor in September, is the company’s new Chief Financial Officer. He serves as financial and strategic advisor to the Air Tractor president and leadership Team.

Turbine Conversions, Ltd Announces New Solution for Thrush H80 FCU Issues with Approval of STC SA04485CH

Turbine Conversions, Ltd announce the approval of FAA STC SA04485CH. The STC is for the installation of a submerged boost fuel pump and Turbine Conversions’ header tank extension assembly to resolve issues with failing fuel control units that Thrush GE H80 aircraft owners have been experiencing. When asked how this project came about, Turbine Conversions, Ltd President Bill Hatfield responded, “Our good friend and colleague Frank Ousley owner of Frank’s Flying Service in Illinois bought one of the first new Thrush GE H80s and was having all kinds of nightmares with the aircraft. He already had over a dozen failed fuel pumps, he wasn’t getting the support he needed from either Thrush (this was prior to the new ownership) or GE because they couldn’t agree who was responsible but it definitely wasn’t being covered under any warranties. Unfortunately, Frank was not alone, several other H80 owners were experiencing similar issues. So I told him I would work on a fix for him.” Bill and Larry Hatcher, TCL’s engineer, worked together to develop a solution. The solution is a modification to the header tank TCL calls the “Top Hat”. The first Top Hat was installed on Frank Ousley’s Thrush GE H80 with a field approval. When Frank was recently asked how his aircraft was doing since the installation he replied, “It has been absolutely foolproof. The selling point is - no downtime and peace of mind.” The full STC was applied for in December of 2019 and the final approval was granted by the FAA in October 2020. Bill Hatfield shares, “This is a very affordable modification that quickly pays for itself. The modification costs less than half of the expense of just one fuel control unit replacement. An added benefit is it also increases your time of replacement of auxiliary fuel pumps from 500
hours (factory recommended) to TCL STC’s 3500 hours.” The Top Hat/Header Tank Extension is a simple process. Thrush H80 owners send a header tank to TCL’s facility in Michigan, TCL makes the STC modifications in house and TCL sends the completed Top Hat Tank back to the customer for installation. “This is a very quick turnaround modification and we are currently taking reservations for six open slots. The arrangements can be made directly with TCL or with your favorite Thrush dealer and is available worldwide,” says Ann Hatfield - Grahek Sales Director.
