he Florida Keys is a dream travel destination for many. Part of keeping the island paradise that stretches over one hundred and thirty-seven miles at the top of the tourist destination list in Florida is holding one of the most

If problems can be detected early and repaired, it is less expensive than replacing parts like a vane ring or turbine blades. Keep a few other things in mind: if you operate a PT6A65AG, a blade inspection needs to be done at 3000 hours. In some other engine models, the PT6A-34AG, for example, requires blade inspection at 5000 hours and includes cutting two blades for metallurgical analysis. Read your maintenance manual so you are aware of any additional inspection criteria that may need attention during the hot section inspection.

Treasurer Matt Woolard (Arkansas) Matt Woolard of Woolard Flying Service in Corning, Arkansas is NAAA’s 2024 treasurer. Matt is heavily involved in the National Agricultural Aviation Museum in Jackson, Mississippi and is chairman of the NAAA Museum Committee. He has also served on NAAA’s Communications & PR, Government Relations, Precision Agriculture and Safety & Federal Aviation Regulations Committees. He will chair the NAAA Budget and Finance Committee later this year. Matt’s interest in the aerial application industry started like many other pilots; from seeing planes flying through farm fields. He was born and raised in northeast Arkansas in a farming family and fell in love with the aircraft that treated crops. His father-in-law owned an aerial application flying service and Matt went to work for him in 1997. At first, he worked as a mechanic earning his A&P. He eventually also earned his pilot’s license and began treating crops in 2004. Sadly, shortly after this, his father-in-law began to battle some health issues and Matt began transitioning out of the

Most of their work is fertilizing and the capacity of the AT-802 makes it a necessity to get the large volume of the work done in a timely fashion. When spraying begins to slow down in the fall, Matt gets back to his roots where he helps his younger brother tend to their fourth-generation family farm, which is about 2,600 acres in Clay County, AR and they farm rice, soybeans, and corn. Matt is excited about his new board position, stating, “Being asked to serve as Treasurer is an honor that I am thought of enough by the members to represent the association. I intend to serve to the standards that I would like to see the association represented.” In his role as treasurer, Matt wants to ensure that ag pilots stay safe from uncrewed aircraft. “Many drones are small, and we cannot see them when we are flying; we need to continue to ensure the safety of our pilots from drones as a top priority,” stated Matt “I look forward to championing our industry and being a voice for our industry.”

Dr. Carrol Voss to be Enshrined into the National Agricultural Aviation Hall of Fame JANUARY 22, 2024 —

Dr. Carrol Voss, a pioneer in the helicopter aerial application industry will be enshrined into the National Agricultural Aviation Hall of Fame during the 2024 Ag Aviation Expo in Fort Worth, Texas. Dr. Voss had a background in entomology and aviation and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin. During World War II, he served as a Navy Flight Instructor for flying boats. Inspired by Joe Mashman’s helicopter dusting tests in 1946, Voss obtained his helicopter pilot’s license in 1949. After a decade of working in helicopters and agriculture, Dr. Voss established his own

business, “Ag Rotors,” in 1958. While not the first to apply materials with helicopters, he significantly refined pesticide application through testing various nozzles on specific pests. Voss applied seeds with helicopters using an external sling bucket and was an early advocate and operator for frost control with helicopters. Ag Rotors ran a flight school, training about 100 pilots annually, including those transitioning from military service, often from the Vietnam War. Dr. Voss played a key role in training helicopter pilots for state police departments. He was a member of

the Helicopter Association International and supported the National Agricultural Aviation Association. In 1983, Dr. Voss authored a paper on helicopter application for Gypsy Moth, addressing environmental concerns and emphasizing organization and communication. Dr. Voss was the first to successfully apply glyphosate to Phragmites test plots in Maryland. He contributed to vector control research globally and received the Sikorsky Humanitarian Service Award for mosquito eradication in New York. Dr. Voss also received the Twirly Birds Les Morris

Award in 1995 and Helicopter Association International’s Bell Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. Dr. Voss also served as a consultant with the World Health Organization, assisting in the establishment of aerial application programs in Africa for insect infestations. In addition, he was a consultant for aerial application in South America, India and the former USSR. Overall, Carrol Voss made significant contributions to the helicopter aerial application industry, combining his expertise in entomology and aviation to advance agricultural aviation practices and disease control. Accident Number: CEN23LA197 Location: Gueydan, Louisiana Date: May 22, 2023 Aircraft: GULFSTREAM-SCHWEIZER A/C CORP GULFSTREAM AM G-164B (A1); GULFSTREAM-SCHWEIZER A/C CORP GULFSTREAM AM G- 164D (A2) Injuries: None (A1); None (A2) The two airplanes were conducting agricultural operations at a private airstrip. The pilot of the landing airplane reported that, while airborne, he noticed the departing airplane was being loaded at the tender truck. The pilot of the landing airplane estimated that he would have enough time to land and clear the runway before the departing airplane was finished loading. The pilot of the departing airplane reported that after loading, he positioned his airplane on the runway and began his takeoff roll. Meanwhile, the pilot of the landing airplane touched down in the opposite direction of the departing airplane. The pilot of the landing airplane reported that while he was slowing down on the landing roll, he looked over his airplane’s hopper and noticed the departing airplane rolling toward him. The pilot of the landing airplane attempted to veer out of the way of the departing airplane but was unsuccessful. The left wing of the landing airplane struck the left wing of the departing airplane. The landing airplane sustained substantial damage to both left wings, the fuselage, the horizontal stabilizer, and the elevator. The airplane sustained substantial damage to both wings, empennage, and fuselage, and the engine separated from the airframe. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. After arriving at the pasture, the chemical dispersal system was malfunctioning, and the pilot decided to return to the airport. As the tailwheel touched down on the dry concrete runway, the pilot initiated beta mode with the propeller, and the airplane “started veering to the right.” The pilot assessed that he “reversed the propeller too aggressively and too soon.” The airplane departed the runway to the right, the left main landing gear separated after impacting a ditch, and the airplane came to rest upright on a grass field. The operator reported there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airframe or the engine that would have precluded normal operation. A postaccident examination of the chemical dispersal system found foreign object debris that was likely blocking the flow of the chemical. The pilot reported the last time he performed a full load landing was about 2 years prior. The estimated density altitude for the airport was 6,101 ft. In places, the ceiling is falling in and all of the massive metal and woodworking equipment that ran almost continuously has long ago disappeared. Gone too are the forty or more mechanics and helpers who for years built and installed the most modem and sophisticated dispensing equipment in those beautiful biplanes. Gone also are the long lines of maroon and blue Stearmans that were a trademark of the firm’s custom application division.
