29TH ANNUAL EDITION

FROM THE COCKPIT
Bill Lavendar bill@agairupdate.com
Introducing The 2020 Ag Aviation Navigator I would like to welcome all AgAir Update readers to the first edition of The Navigator, formally the AgAir Update ShowGuide. The purpose of The Navigator is to present a comprehensive printed and digital platform for AgAir Update advertisers and readers to know each better. The digital space, which is posted on agairupdate.com, includes more in-depth articles, photos and videos for each advertiser appearing in the printed pages of The Navigator. This is particularly true for the reader to be informed about all ag-aviation related services and products that are available through The Navigator’s advertisers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The traditional content of the ShowGuide, now coupled with digital offerings brings The Navigator to the forefront of information about existing and emerging ag aviation vendors. The rebranding of ShowGuide into The Navigator has been due to COVID-19 and its impact on ag-aviation. This far reaching virus has been a disrupter in everyone’s lives worldwide, including ag-aviation. Fortunately, throughout the world, leaders and politicians have recognized the importance of ag-aviation and the world’s food supply allowing our readers to continue with the important

work of helping farmers produce safe and economical food and fiber. I knew the AgAir Update team would need to rethink how to continue promoting its valuable advertisers with the potential of NAAA’s Ag Aviation Expo attendance to be reduced or worse, the convention cancelled. With input from readers, exhibitors and AgAir Update team members, we have been able to bring to you through the pages of The Navigator important information that will undoubtedly help make ag-flying a safer and more profitable business during these challenging times. And, as of this writing, the NAAA’s 2020 Ag Aviation Expo is scheduled to be held in person, so the content on pages of The Navigator will give you a preview of what will be at the convention, just as in years past. Because COVID-19 has affected all businesses in one way or another, it becomes more critical than ever for suppliers to the ag-aviation industry to continue to send their message advising AgAir Update readers of their products and services. Some have had to change ways of doing business, while for others it is business as usual. In the following pages, you will know how your chosen suppliers are operating and their availability. This is

what The Navigator’s mission is, bringing together readers and advertisers. Also within the pages of The Navigator, you will read comments from NAAA’s Chief Executive Officer Andrew Moore and President Darrin Pluhar. NAAA has done a fantastic job organizing an international trade show that represents agaviation worldwide under very challenging circumstances.
The rebranding of ShowGuide into The Navigator has been due to COVID-19 and its impact on agaviation. Also, you will find valuable information about the events planned at this year’s convention in Savannah, December 7-10, hosted at the Savannah Convention Center with the Westin Savannah as the primary host hotel as in years past. Just last month, AgAir Update editor, Graham Lavender, made a fact-finding trip to Savannah. While there, he observed the
rules in place to minimize the spread of Covid-19. Although masks have their advantages, Graham reported that the historical River Street and other eatery and drinking establishments were business as usual. So, I wouldn’t be too concerned about Covid-19 restricting ag-aviation activities within the city. Of course, I can’t speak for the authorities or the policies of NAAA in regards to Covid-19. Anything can change overnight. I’m simply saying don’t let Covid-19 stop you from attending NAAA’s convention in December. I can assure you that we will be living in a different world by then! In closing, I know we are all hoping and praying 2021 will be a return to normal and that we can once again hug and shake the hands of new and old friends at next year’s convention, or on the job site. Until then, please use The Navigator to help you navigate through the many choices for products and services available to ag-aviators during this challenging time. The NAAA and AgAir Update advertisers need your support as much as you need theirs! I look forward to seeing you in Savannah, December 7-10. Until then, Keep Turning...

The Show Must Go On at NAAA’s 2020 Ag Aviation Expo December 7-10 in Savannah!
The people of Savannah will bend over backwards to make NAAA attendees and exhibitors feel safe and welcome.
6 | agairupdate.com
On behalf of the National Agricultural Aviation Association, we would like to invite all AgAir Update readers to the 2020 Ag Aviation Expo. This is the fifth time since 2010 the Hostess City of the South has hosted the world’s largest agricultural aviation expo. Savannah has already welcomed back conventioneers this year and we look forward to the city’s amazing Southern hospitality. We know the people of Savannah will bend over backwards to make NAAA attendees and exhibitors feel safe and welcome. We have sessions for new pilots, experienced pilots, spouses and support staff. If you are looking to grow your business, find a job or sell a product or service in the aerial application industry, the 2020 Ag Aviation Expo is the place for you! Our expo offers everything from a world-class trade show to enriching education sessions and valuable networking opportunities! You can expect to experience the same robust, informative and interactive atmosphere as always at the 2020 Ag Aviation Expo, but with additional safeguards established for the health and wellness of our attendees, exhibitors and staff. The festivities begin at the Kickoff Breakfast Monday morning where you’ll hear from Damian Mason, an agricultural economist, futurist, author, podcaster and comedian. Damian’s latest book is called Food Fear, but he’s not here to scare us. Damian delivers his insights on agriculture with humor and highly logical projections of where American agriculture is headed in the future. His
positive, amusing straight talk resonates with ag audiences from across the spectrum. In addition to speaking at ag meetings, Damian produces and hosts “The Business of Agriculture” podcast and the “Do Business Better” podcast. His new book, Food Fear: How Fear Is Ruining Your Dinner and Why You Should Celebrate Eating, was published last December. Several educational sessions are on tap throughout the week, including the Aerial Application Technology Research Session and programming focused on safety, low-level obstacles, crop protection products, mentoring new ag pilots, airframes, engine performance, helicopters and company sessions. The educational programming leads off with the Aerial Application Technology Research Session, the R&D portion of the NAAA Expo. You will hear a science-based overview of some of the latest state-of-the-art research being conducted for aerial applicators’ benefit. Topics of discussion will include ways to improve spray swath uniformity, nozzle evaluations conducted in the USDA-ARS’s recently upgraded wind tunnel facilities, aerial application methods to control winter weeds, and using aerial imaging to aid in the early detection of boll weevils in cotton fields. Several states are granting CEUs for this session. Visit AgAviation.org/ceu for a full list of CEU opportunities at the expo. NAAA’s General Session on Tuesday, December 8 will focus on legal, medical and food trends occurring in the ag aviation industry nationally and how that might affect you and your business. You’ll
NAVIGATOR
hear expert testimony from an attorney, a physician and an agricultural marketing guru on a wide range of issues relevant to operators, ag pilots and suppliers to the industry. Aviation attorney John Wright will start off the session by discussing a legal case he tried in Colorado between an aggressive state government agency and reputable, professional aerial applicators. Following rudimentary procedures on the applicators’ parts resulted in a victory for our industry. Wright also provides complimentary legal services for NAAA. Next on the dais will be Dr. Stan Musick, aviator and AME, who will address numerous medical topics, including over-the-counter drugs’ potency, fatigue and how to be granted a medical special issuance. Finally, Agri Marketing magazine publisher Lynn Henderson will discuss fairly radical changes in consumer food trends and how that may affect the aerial application industry. The General Session is sure to be chock-full of information relevant to operators, ag pilots and suppliers to the industry alike. This year’s career-development programs have been frontloaded to give new and low-time ag pilots increased opportunities to interact with experienced operators and pilots after the sessions. The Compaass Rose Session is being offered Sunday, December 6, and NAAREF’s “Ask the Expert” Speed Mentoring Session will take place Monday, December 7. Compaass Rose is an information-sharing session geared toward low-time and prospective ag pilots. It is led by PAASS presenters, our roving safety instructors. Speed Mentoring is a fast-paced orientation session for new and prospective ag pilots where experienced industry experts meet with small groups of attendees in short mentoring rounds to answer questions in a more personal setting. The experts may represent operators, pilots and ag insurance representatives. The Relationship Drift Session will take place Wednesday, December 9. This
fun session was introduced last year and looks at how personal relationships affect pilot decision-making and safety. It is similar in format to the Compaass Rose program, but instead of facilitating relations between inexperienced pilots and more experienced operators, Relationship Drift is designed to facilitate relations between operators/pilots and their spouses and/or support staff at operations in the interest of pilot safety and everyone’s general welfare. The NAAREF Safety Session on Thursday, December 10 will cover two important safety topics: emergency dumping procedures and how to land with a fully loaded aircraft. The session will be valuable to both inexperienced and experienced pilots.
There will be no shortage of opportunities to network and make new acquaintances. You’ll be able to attend a different reception nearly every night. For specific solutions for your business look no further than the NAAA Trade Show December 8–9. The world’s largest agricultural aviation trade show brings buyers and sellers of aerial applicationrelated products, supplies and services together under one roof. Visit with over 100 exhibiting companies and view eight aircraft on display. Don’t miss the fun of the Live Auction, which also happens to be our biggest fundraiser. Along with a new PT6A-34AG engine from Pratt & Whitney Canada, many other great items are up for bid. Visit AgAviation.org/auctions for a list
of all the auction items. The action gets underway December 8 at 5:30 p.m. on the trade show floor. Throughout the week, there will be no shortage of opportunities to network and make new acquaintances. From Monday’s Welcome Reception to Thursday’s Farewell Reception, you’ll be able to attend a different reception nearly every night. Finally, we encourage you to make plants to attend the Excellence in Ag Aviation Banquet December 10 where we will honor nine distinguished awardees for their impressive contributions to the industry. That’s just a small taste of what you will find at the 2020 Ag Aviation Expo. There is much more information within these pages and on NAAA’s website at AgAviation.org/convention. Please join us and the agricultural aviation industry’s best operators, pilots and service providers for what promises to be a memorable week! Register for the 2020 Ag Aviation Expo using the registration form found in the AAU Navigator (page 29) or go to AgAviation.org. We urge you to register in advance for this year’s Ag Aviation Expo. While we offer on-site registration, please register online or over the phone at (202) 546-5722. This is a safer and much quicker way to transact and it allows us to determine the appropriate amount of food and beverages at our events. Finally, please do your part to support our efforts to put on a healthy and safe show by adhering to the health and safety precautions we have in place to mitigate any risks to your own health or the health of other conventioneers. To learn more about NAAA’s procedures for a healthy and safe Ag Aviation Expo, including social distancing measures, visit AgAviation.org/healthyexpo.

NAAA Procedures for a Healthy & Safe Ag Aviation Expo The NAAA Ag Aviation Expo is scheduled to take place in person in Savannah, Georgia December 7-10. NAAA is diligently working on plans to help with social distancing throughout our convention. We are also working with the city and our contracted facilities to understand their steps for additional disinfecting/ sanitizing during our show.
NAAA Procedures A few of the procedures that NAAA is implementing include: 1. We will create six-feet of space between people in our registration line and at our registration desk. Staff will wipe down the desk in between each person and we strongly encourage you to register online or over the phone this year. If you have purchased a booth space, you do not need to register as an attendee. 2. We will create a social distancing flow on our NAAA Trade Show floor with arrows and distance marker stickers. 3. We will set up our meeting rooms to have sections of seating with chairs spaced apart for those that do not want to sit close to others. 4. We encourage you to wear a face mask. 5. We encourage elbow bumping instead of handshakes. 6. Depending on availability of products, we will have PPE stations on the floor and in the registration area that will house hand sanitizer, gloves and face masks. Bayer CropScience is sponsoring the 2020 Ag Aviation Expo
neck gator masks. 7. We will also be implementing changes with the food and beverage at our receptions, banquets and coffee breaks so that multiple people are not touching banquet station handles. 8. We encourage you to travel with and wear face masks and gloves. 9. View the Savannah Convention Center protocols at www. savconventioncenter.com/returnplan/.
Savannah Convention Center NAAA is also working with the city of Savannah and its contracted facilities to understand their steps for additional disinfecting/sanitizing during our show. The Savannah Convention Center will be one of the leading convention centers in the country to achieve the GBAC STAR™ accreditation for cleaning, disinfection, and infectious disease prevention. The Georgia World Congress Center Authority (GWCCA), which manages the Savannah Convention Center where the Ag Aviation Expo will take place, announced the accreditation news. GWCCA is among a handful of venues in the first wave of leaders committing to this accreditation. The Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC), a division of ISSA, the leading trade association for the cleaning industry, recently announced this facility accreditation program. 75 Years of Flying Excellence
Lane Aviation, Inc. will be proudly exhibiting at NAAA’s Ag Aviation Expo in Savannah, Georgia, December 7-10. We invite everyone to stop by booths #713-717 for a drink on us and good Texas conversation.

Lane Aviation, Inc. is excited to be celebrating its 75th year in business. Our company prides itself on maintaining ethical business practices that translate into integrity for every facet of Lane Aviation. We believe this honesty is what has gained the trust of so many valued customers and allowed us to become the leading Air Tractor distributor for sales, service and support. Without you, the customer, we would not be here today. For that, we want to say “Thank you” from everyone here! Lane Aviation’s association with agricultural aircraft sales began with George Lane and Leland Snow in College Station, Texas in 1957; Leland was demonstrating the S-2A. George gave Leland a deposit on one of the first five built! Shortly thereafter, Lane Aviation became a dealer for Snow Aircraft. Therefore, when Leland Snow developed Air Tractor, Lane Aviation’s business relationship with Snow was already well established. In 1974, Lane Aviation was selected as the first Air Tractor dealer and has since sold more than anyone else in the world, over 1,000! Lane Aviation has always been a family-run company. George’s sons are both still actively involved in the company. Grant Lane serves as president of Lane Aviation and Mark Lane as a pilot, both relocating aircraft and as a relief pilot during the season. Grant’s son, Logan Lane, represents a third generation in this family business. In 2013, Logan graduated from Texas A&M University and began learning the ropes at Lane Aviation. In addition to being an Instrument and Multi-engine, Commercially-rated pilot, with experience ranging from Air Tractors to cabin-class aircraft, Logan manages much of the daily operations at the airport. While Logan’s fresh perspective lends itself to innovation, he is also learning from Grant’s life-long experience in the agricultural aviation business. In particular, Grant’s highly personalized customer service has become a cornerstone that customers count on and value. Whether an operator is making a transition to Air Tractors, moving from radials to
turbine powered aircraft, or updating their current fleet, Grant and Logan will be there to offer help and advice along the way. Lane Aviation operates from its airport in Rosenberg, Texas (T54), Lane Air Park. The maintenance facility is capable of handling nearly every type of Air Tractor maintenance. This includes annual and periodic inspections, major airframe repairs and engine exchanges. The ability to perform up to and including hot section inspections, as well as great business relationships with dedicated engine shops, keeps the customer well taken care of. With Air Tractor factory training and multiple FAAcertified A&P and IA mechanics, the highest quality work can always be expected. Also located at Lane Air Park is the fully stocked parts department of Lane Aviation, the largest stock of Air Tractor spares outside of the factory. Not only is it essential to have parts on hand to facilitate repairs made in the maintenance shop, but it’s paramount to have an extensive inventory readily available to ship to our customers. Lane Aviation maintained a Part 137 aerial application operation for 70 years. That taught us how to best respond to ag operators’ needs, it also helped us understand what it means to be AOG. Lane Aviation works diligently to make sure our customers get their required parts as quickly as possible. Whether a customer is two towns over or on another continent, Lane Aviation has the experience and expertise to get them back in the air. Lane Aviation, Inc. will be proudly exhibiting at NAAA’s Ag Aviation Expo in Savannah, Georgia, December 7-10. We invite everyone to stop by booths #713-717 for a drink on us and good Texas conversation. Be sure to ask about our special convention sale prices for our industry-leading Lane brakes and fans. The Lane brake and fan combination for spray pumps has been proven to be as rugged and reliable as they come. See y’all in Savannah!

Imagine an agricultural economist talk show host crossbred with a healthy, logical futurist and knee-slapping comedian. What do you get? Why Damian Mason, the NAAA Ag Aviation Expo Kickoff Breakfast speaker on Monday, December 7 at the Westin Savannah Harbor. Our former speaker for the 2020 Kickoff Breakfast, author James Bradley is unable to travel to our 2020 Ag Aviation Expo due to being relocated to New Zealand, but we’re thrilled to have Damian Mason as our featured speaker! Damian delivers crisp, current, agriculture commentary packed with humor and highly logical projections of where American agriculture is headed in the future. His content and message is a vast departure from the usual ag meeting fare of weather and market updates. Damian’s positive, hilarious, straight talk resonates with ag audiences from across the spectrum. In addition to speaking at ag meetings, Damian produces and hosts “The Business of Agriculture” podcast and the “Do Business Better” podcast. He released his book, Do Business Better - Traits, Habits, and Actions to Help You Succeed in April of 2019. His new book, Food Fear - How Fear Is Ruining Your Dinner and Why You Should Celebrate Eating was published in December of 2019. He’s also extremely active on social media discussing agriculture and occasionally fighting with ag’s online opponents. Damian’s clients include the biggest names in agriculture and cover every space on the table - from corn to cranberries, cotton to cattle, canned food to canola. He has spoken in all 50 U.S. states, five
Canadian provinces, and seven foreign countries. Damian was raised on a dairy farm, owns, and manages 300 acres of farm and timber land, and has a degree in Agricultural Economics from Purdue University. When Damian is not on an airplane or stage, he lives with his wife, Lori, and their dogs, Jack and Rosa. They split time between their farm in Indiana and a winter home in Arizona. A Message from Thrush Aircraft Last year we spoke with many of you at NAAA, and in the field, we listened to your concerns and developed a plan to address them. We made promises to improve our aircraft, our operational performance, and our customer service. Our goal was to strengthen Thrush and rebuild a company innovative and durable enough to withstand any uncertainty; to earn your trust and confidence. I’m proud to say those goals have been met, and in many cases exceeded. We bought Thrush for the chance to work with great people, making a great product, in support of one of the world’s most important professions. We’ve brought financial stability to the company and our supply chain, standardized dealer and service center networks, modernized our aircraft, and revolutionized product support capabilities. The dedicated efforts of a success-driven factory and dealer team around the world has resulted in a secure and progressive Thrush. We’ve had a great year despite the impact COVID-19 has had on us all. In fact, thanks to the monumental efforts from everyone at Thrush, we’ve been able to maintain production and delivery schedules, as well as increase our levels of support – all while ensuring strict adherence to national health guidelines. Best of all, we’ve seen the results of these efforts reflected in our order books, which continue to be filled for virtually every model of aircraft in our product line. One of our most noteworthy achievements this year was the completion of our Illustrated Parts Catalog and the addition of online ordering capability – a first for the ag aviation industry. In addition, we partnered with highly regarded information services company ATP to place all of our support publications online. This enables service-related publications, as well as technical and regulatory information for all Thrush aircraft and their components, to be continuously updated. 14 | agairupdate.com
We have a great team of dealers and service centers and we’ve made good on our promise to build upon their capabilities. This summer we appointed Africair as our authorized distributor in north and sub-Sahara Africa – and their affiliate, Tropical Aviation Distributors, for the Caribbean – a combined region that spans more than forty countries. Adding this well-known dealer, and others like them, are part of our strategic worldwide growth plan which focuses on facilitating easy access to our products in a customer’s own language and region – from Kansas to Kenya. All to ensure everyone who chooses a Thrush has the absolute best purchase and support experience in the business. But the promise we’re most proud to keep is to continually look for ways to increase the safety of our aircraft. We continually research technology and develop improvements to increase the safety of our aircraft for the people who fly them. Whether spraying crops or fighting wildfires, Thrush has always built aircraft designed to bring pilots home safely each night. Now, our leadership team has taken that foundational commitment even further by investing in engineering and component enhancements designed to improve safety and provide operators even greater confidence in their aircraft – so they can focus on flying. From the factory floor, to the front office, to the world’s fields and forests – this year has seen Thrush become a much better company. The pandemic has made things hard on everyone – but hard times bring out the best in people, and we’re seeing affirmation of that every day. We feel blessed for the past year and excited about the coming year. Thank you for your continued support and friendship – and warmest wishes for a safe and healthy winter, and an even better year ahead.

Introducing a parts department that’s always open. Ever needed to source a part number or its availability well after sunset? Or check compliance with the latest from the FAA before first flight of the day? Both can be a headache. That’s why we’ve teamed with ATP to introduce our new Illustrated Parts Catalog with online ordering – and created a new cloud-based online library of all technical, service and regulatory information for every key component on your Thrush. Both are constantly updated and available with just a few clicks on your computer. And, at any hour of the day. For information about obtaining our new Illustrated Parts Catalog with online ordering capability, or our new online support library, please call your local Thrush Dealer, or Kevin Pierce at 229.317.8222. We hope to still see many of you at this year’s Ag Aviation Expo, while contact is reduced, we are still very excited to catch up with old friends and make new ones at the Savannah, Georgia expo. As we manage through 2020 into the 2021 year, we will be attending every opportunity we can to speak with our customers in person at all state shows and fly-ins. Transland stands strong with the aerial applicator industry and will continue to deliver dependable equipment for aerial applicators and fire fighters.
out to create a complete system that joined the two product lines. The Transland 7.5” hydraulic gate box system for dry application was the first to be connected in 2019 using the Satloc G4 and IF2 controller. In this new system customers can operate their hydraulic gate system all within their Satloc G4 GPS unit eliminating additional screens in the cockpit and simplifying control, be able to manage gate settings and use auto settings to operate the gate when approaching the field. Also newly released in 2020, applicators with the 5” manual gate box that comes standard on all Air Tractor aircraft can easily convert to a hydraulic system with Satloc control in an affordable conversion kit or purchase a complete system directly from your dealer. Transland offers dry gate options for many different aircraft and continues to lead the industry for dry gate systems.

Transland’s nozzle division CP Products has released an improved poppet diaphragm for the CP04 check valve. This new assembly gives a superior hold and seal eliminating dribbling issues from past design. The diaphragm material is a special mixture of materials giving strength and extended life that beats out all the competition. In testing, results showed the new diaphragms anti-leak holding pressure is more than double the leading competitor and can last three times longer before needing replacement. We are currently working on more exciting improvements in our nozzle and check valve division coming soon. Air Tractor Continues Meeting the Demand
Two Air Tractor airplanes, including the popular, powerful 502XP will be on display at the NAAA Ag Aviation Expo tradeshow in booth # 523.
20 | agairupdate.com
Air Tractor returns to Savannah at the close of a strong year of aircraft production and sales. Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch reports that despite the worldwide novel corona-virus pandemic, domestic and international demand for agricultural and firefighting aircraft remains high. “The need is there, and we have the people and capacity to meet the demand. As we approach the close of the year, we will have produced 115 airplanes. I anticipate we will produce even more airplanes in 2021.” Air Tractor Director of Training and Education Brian Hahn reports Air Tractor training courses, which launched in Fall 2019, were well attended this year before the pandemic caused some cancellations. The 2021 course schedule and additional information about Air Tractor training for aircraft maintenance technicians can be found at airtractor. com/training. Two Air Tractor airplanes, including the popular, powerful 502XP will be on display at the NAAA Ag Aviation Expo tradeshow in booth # 523. Just across the aisle, in booth #423, Air Tractor personnel will be available to answer questions and provide information about aircraft, new products, and Air Tractor support. During the Air Tractor session Thursday morning at 8:45, Jim Hirsch will look back at 2020 activities and forward toward 2021 plans. Parked beside the two Air Tractor airplanes is an all-new, 2020-edition custom Air Tractor golf cart. “Last year’s Air Tractor golf cart generated quite a spirited round of auction bidding,” recalls Rick Turner, Air Tractor Vice President of Operations. “So, we are bringing another to Savannah so that NAAA auction participants can have another crack
at owning one.” Other Air Tractor sponsored auction items include a uAvionix tailBeacon ADS-B Out kit and an engraved firearm. Several new products and improvements will begin appearing on 2021 production airplanes. A new perforated metal rigid grip fuselage step will give pilots a secure, non-slip step up onto the wing. Once up on the wing, a new spray-on safety walk material provides durable, secure footing. The black, chemical resistant, long-lasting coating won’t peel. The PPG Aerospace Securitect® 326 windshield is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2021. It is 20% lighter while providing 10x greater impact resistance than traditional laminated glass designs. It also offers better optical clarity, light transmittance and abrasion resistance. Tail wheels for AT-602 and AT-802 aircraft are now being produced at Air Tractor. The wheels are machined from solid aluminum billet and anodized after machining. The new wheel now has a grease zerk fitting on the axle for easy lubrication. We continue to work with CapstanAG’s SwathPRO aerial spray system booms and look forward to the time when they can be ordered as an optional item for Air Tractor ag planes. The spray system provides true variable rate flow control. Preset user-defined profiles allow quick, easy changing of nozzle pattern profiles on the fly—from full-flow to off. “We’re looking forward to seeing our friends in Savannah. We have lots to talk about and are excited about 2021,” says Jim Hirsch. www.airtractor.com

“On the Fly” Nozzle Control by CapstanAG™ The SwathPRO Aerial Application System from CapstanAG gives ag pilots individual nozzle control previously unattainable in aerial application. SwathPRO provides the pilot with ability to switch from one boom nozzle setup to another without landing the plane. The SwathPRO system utilizes CapstanAG Systems Inc., Pulse Width Modulation solenoid at each nozzle station controlled by in cockpit user display. The CapstanAG patented technology, pilot feedback, and industry knowledge in flow distribution brings a new spray system to the aerial industry focused on pilot safety, application accuracy and drift mitigation. Based in Topeka, Kansas, CapstanAG is no stranger to liquid application. Since 1994, CapstanAG has specialized in pressure control & flow distribution on self-propelled sprayers, creating the patented Pulse Width Modulation technology which has become a standard in the industry. Since the debut of SwathPRO at the 2018 NAAA convention in Reno, CapstanAG has successfully installed systems on multiple Air Tractors across the US. Significant milestones reached with the SwathPRO system include 1.5 million acres covered in the past three years, cockpit integration with
controllers, and Auto Mode controls the flow control valve to keep the pressure constant regardless of speed or rate changes. Coupled with the PWM solenoid valve, Auto Mode provides the proper flow distribution of liquid. As described by one of the SwathPRO pilots, “I now have an auto tip changer as I go through the field.” Another pilot says, “I am more accurate, with less drift than I have ever been”…“SwathPRO makes my job safer and easier with no drift claims.” Air Tractor continues to support and work closely with CapstanAG and the SwathPRO system, as CapstanAG is currently engaged with the FAA for STC approval. Soon the SwathPRO system will be offered as an option on your new Air Tractor. CapstanAG is firmly committed to this process, and investing in further advances for SwathPRO to benefit ag pilots. Small Town Service and the Best Rates Dorothy Kimmel made it her mission to find coverage for their customers.
Kimmel Aviation Insurance arose in 1972 from a need to write hard-to-find and much needed insurance on cropdusters. The insurance side of the business started very pragmatically as customers were coming to the Kimmel Aviation Ag Aircraft dealership to trade in their $500 converted Super Cubs and Stearmans for the more productive and shiny new Cessna Ag Wagons and Ag Trucks. The $20,000 price tag and the ever evolving regulatory environment in the early 1970s mandated that all certified applicators must carry a minimum liability insurance policy or a bond of $10,000. Cessna Finance also wanted to make sure their loans were protected. Very few companies would insure ag aircraft back
in the early 1970s. So Dorothy Kimmel made it her mission to find that coverage for their customers. From its humble beginnings, the insurance part of the business grew and in 1972 formally incorporated Kimmel Aviation Insurance Agency, Inc.. Over the years, Dorothy Kimmel has received numerous industry awards including, but not limited to MAAA Outstanding Service Award – 1975, MAAA President’s Award – 1985, WMAAA President, 15 years WMAAA Director to the WNAAA, WNAAA Vice Pres. 1991, WNAAA President 1992, Lee Abide Award – 1998, Arkansas (AAAA) Distinguished service award 2006, MAAA Honorary Lifetime Membership Award – 2006. In addition, Dorothy also served on numerous

Most of us know how expensive the PT6A engines can be when it comes to maintenance, overhauls, etc; especially the older or higher time engines that are used on aircraft that no longer have an appraisal value to justify the expense of the required overhaul at 3600 hours (or 4100 hours on some engines). Many of these engines are still in great condition, making it even harder to justify the expense of an overhaul. Since 1993, MORE Company, Inc. has more than 2500 engines using the FAA approved MORE Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs) in the US and over 50 foreign countries. Commonly known as the “MORE Program”, the MORE Instructions For Continued Airworthiness are a set of directions for maintaining the engine by using an aggressive inspection system; periodic borescope inspection of the hot section, inspection of the compressor and exhaust duct areas, Power Plant-Adjustment Test, spectrometric oil and filter debris analysis, engine vibrational analysis and preventative maintenance. The purpose of this system is to find problems in their early stages and then having found 4/10/13 12:21 PM those12:21 problems to correct them, promptly. 4/10/13 PM For all of you that know MORE, thank you for your recognition, support and continued efforts in keeping the PT6A engines alive!

Her most outstanding achievement was to raise a family of four boys, all who entered the ag aviation field and chose career paths closely related to ag aviation. Although Dorothy is still active in the agency, her youngest son, Frank Kimmel, took over the day to day operations of Kimmel Aviation Insurance Agency in 2004. Frank brings with him 14,000 hours of flying experience including 8000+ as an ag pilot. Frank also has his own pedigree of accomplishments including , 1992 John Horne Memorial Safety award (NAAA), Novartis Leadership training delegate – 1998, NAAA Related Service Award – 2008, Arkansas (AAAA) Outstanding Service Award 2008, and the MAAA Allied Industry Associate of the year 2010. In addition to the ag association awards, Frank was elected by his aviation insurance peers to serve on the Aviation Insurance Association (AIA) Board of Directors in 2005. He served as the Director of the Domestic Agents and Brokers Division until he was elected Vice President of the AIA in 2009 and then AIA President for 2011 – 2012. Field Results Show it Pays to Take Control™ by Dennis Gardisser, WRK of Arkansas, dgardisser@wrkofar.com
Control™ has also been one of the top contenders in replicated research evaluations under a wide range of operating speeds and setups.
It’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but every once in a while, I come upon something that is worth repeating. I’m sure many of you have heard the 80-10-10 story that I tell when it comes to drift reduction products: 80 percent of the time nothing happens, 10 percent of the time the result is worse, and 10 percent of the time there is a definite improvement. For years, Arkansas Operation S.A.F.E. clinics have included one day of field evaluations of locally favored drift mitigation aids. The data has been quite sporadic and probably a reflection of the variety of setups, weather conditions, mixing procedures, and operating variables. With all that said, Control™ from GarrCo Products, Inc. has consistently shown positive results. Control™ has also been one of the top contenders in replicated research evaluations under a wide range of operating speeds and setups. Unsolicited applicator comments like: “Best
CONTROL DUO LS™ provides two great products – CONTROL WM™ deposition aid/drift mitigation adjuvant and a unique NIS in one easy-to-use package.
material I’ve ever used”, “Very easy to mix and load”, “I see improved efficacy” and “The material that I used to get on the windshield is gone” add validity to Control’s real world performance. Mixing and compatibility are one of the major issues with any drift reduction additive. Arkansas operators attest to the ease of mixing with Control™ under a wide range of solution characteristics. There are a lot of products available for drift mitigation and application efficiency. I encourage every applicator to check out all available data and select a product that has been thoroughly evaluated for optimum performance.
Visit us at our Booth #834 in Savannah.
BENEFITS ■ Contains a unique, highly effective NIS blend that enhances pesticide uptake while not increasing the number of fine droplets as most NIS and oils do. ■ Contains CONTROL WM™ proven in many research and field trials to be superior at mitigating drift and increasing deposition.
Without CONTROL™
■ Multiple independent trials demonstrate a 2X higher retention of the spray solution on plant surfaces. ■ Significantly lowers evaporation of the spray droplet ■ Satisfies most label requirements for surfactant and drift adjuvant. Its higher ratio of polymer to surfactant is designed for aerial application at a low cost.

P&WC 850 SHP STC - “The Sweet Spot”
The Cascade Pressure Cowl continues to be a must-have for the owner/operator to protect their operational investment.
The golf ball goes the farthest when it is hit in the sweet spot. Cascade hits the “sweet spot” with the P&WC PT6A-41/42 850 SHP STC kits to upgrade the 500-gallon Thrush and Air Tractor AT502/502B aircraft. This STC upgrade increases your acres per hour and the profitability of your business. Operating ag aircraft at higher elevations or higher temperatures is where this upgrade will really increase productivity. The PT6A-41/42 turbine from P&WC has been the foundation that has made the King Air B200 the most successful business aircraft in the world. The prolific success of the King Air has made the PT6A-41/42 engines, parts and pricing readily available. The increase in performance for Cascade’s earlier STC for the Air Tractor AT502/502B and now the 500-gallon Thrush models is significant. The PT6A-41/42 maintains continuous 850 SHP up to 106° OAT which increases safety margins and eliminates downloading on high temperature days. The 850 SHP turbine is the power “sweet” spot for the 500-gallon ag aircraft. This conversion kit is

Be Safe, Save Time, Be More Productive! Load a plane every five minutes! Compare any system to Mixmate. That is all we ask. Mixmate offers features not available in any other system at any price. Mixmate is optimized for speed, accuracy, and price. The simple plumbing lowers cost and is easier to maintain. Mix multiple products simultaneously for speed with accurate flowmeters and scales. Bruce Van Beek of R & M Spraying said: “I’m impressed with the accuracy of the meters.” Bruce is using a Mixmate system featuring the Mixmate Pro Inductor and a Flow Super Stack with 14 bulk inputs. The Super Stack gives the lowest cost per input connection and was built especially for aerial applicators. Tracking products from many sources is much easier with the additional inputs to the Mixmate system. Bruce also said: “We have had huge time savings when processing jugs.” The patent-pending jug process drains, measures, and rinses jugs in about 12 seconds. Mike Cruce of Cruce Aviation is currently using eight inputs with a Mixmate Flow Double Stack. A manual inductor is used for the jugs. When very few jugs are used, a manual inductor makes sense. Using as much of your current system as possible keeps system input costs down. Mike said: “Only a few applicators can afford the expensive mixing systems, but most can afford
Mixmate.” Also appreciated by Cruce Aviation is the closed system - especially for the insecticides, clean working environment and automated mixing. Mike said: “Bulk products mixed through the Mixmate Flow system eliminated the worker exposure during mixing.” The loading crew now has time to do the load planning which makes the airplanes more efficient. Our customers say it takes about the same amount of time to mix and load the chemicals as it takes to refuel. Batches are blended on demand. Batch tanks and premixing are not needed in most cases. It is possible to mix helicopter-size batches in seconds. Loading systems and logistics are simplified when mixes happen quickly as they are needed. Conditions change and premixed batches do not. Mixmate has the flexibility to cover almost any mixing situation. Our inductors are especially good for handling jugs and dry products with automated measurements and records. Existing mixing plants can be modernized with Mixmate’s control systems to give new capabilities and speed. Any Mixmate system can easily be expanded at any time as needed so you are not locked into a fixed configuration. We invite you to give our Praxidyn Team a call. Mixmate may be just the system you have been looking for! Be more productive...save time...and stay safe!!!

More Acres & Less Stress, with Flight Plan Online Our Mobile View lets pilots open batches on the fly.
36 | agairupdate.com
When spray season gets busy, Flight Plan Online helps you keep control. It’s a better way to organize and complete spray jobs. It helps you communicate effectively, be more efficient, and spray more acres. With Flight Plan Online, you can offer customers an easy way to create jobs. The user-friendly design will have them making maps and work orders, fast. They can even include adjacent crops and hazards near the field. Email alerts let them track jobs, without calling you for updates. One of our most powerful tools is the Master Map. Whether you have a few jobs, or a few hundred, you get a clear overview to create manageable batches and schedule them for spraying. It’s easy to upload field boundaries into your guidance system. Our Mobile View lets pilots open batches on the fly, select a job, and
automatically record completion information. Flight Plan Online helps you reduce risk. It flags sensitive areas on pilot maps. The maps give a clear view of fields and nearby landmarks where you’ll be flying, so you spray the right field. All work orders are kept online, so they can’t get lost. If you want to offer as-applied maps to customers, there’s no easier way. You can also create application reports and invoices the same day you spray! We’re honored by all of the aerial applicators who choose Flight Plan Online year after year. They tell us they love how easy it is to use, and how we put customer service first. Make sure you stop by the AgNav booth #807 and get a FREE registration for Ag-Mission software.
Like many years in the past, Ag-Nav works hard during the season manufacturing and engineering new technologies to help you best with your aerial application. While at the 2020 NAAA convention, please stop by booth #807 and look at the new OLED LIGHTBAR and new Nav systems we offer.
What is OLED? OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) is a flat light emitting technology, made by placing a series of organic thin films between two conductors. OLEDs are emissive displays that do not require a backlight and so are thinner and more efficient than LCD displays (which do require a white backlight). The glass is transparent without blocking your line of sight and allowing you to mount the lightbar inside the cockpit. This prevents any damage due to environment or issues due to exposure. The Low Down on DRAs Drift-fiant™ is hybrid technology with a patented twist—a vegetable polymer which is synergized with an emulsification system.
Drift Reduction Agents (DRAs) come as polymers, invert emulsions, vegetable polymers, and emulsifiers. Polymer types are thickeners and are susceptible to pump shear. Invert emulsions are tricky and can be unreliable. Vegetable polymers are thickeners but not as thick as other polymers, and are more resistant to pump shear. Emulsion types are the newest technology and function over the broadest range of applications. Drift-fiant™ is hybrid technology with a patented twist—a vegetable polymer which is synergized with an emulsification system. The results are a supreme drift-reduction agent that reduces fines without increasing large “bounce off” droplets, which increases deposition on the leaf by about 15% over the best competitor. AgraSyst has combined Drift-fiant’s™ technology with other
products for increased convenience including: • AgraSyst Lo-Drift 90™: Our blended NIS, with Drift-fiant™ inside the formulation. • Full Load Complete™: Our do everything adjuvant—Premium surfactants, water conditioning, Drift reduction and Volatility reduction. “Full Load Complete™ has been our one stop shop for our spray adjuvants. It is convenient and easy to use. It’s nice to have everything in one jug. We can really see the difference in drift reduction out of the back of the plane”. Fred Meise North West Ag Moses Lake, WA

NAAA General Session at Ag Aviation Expo will Cover Medical, Legal and Food Trends Affecting Ag Aviation
Substantive presentations about legal, medical and food trends occurring in the ag aviation nationally and how that might affect you and your business.
Order in the court! Come hear expert testimony from an attorney, a physician and an agricultural marketing guru at the 2020 Ag Aviation Expo in Savannah December 7-10. NAAA’s star witnesses pledge to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth about a range of issues of importance to aerial applicators at NAAA’s General Session on Tuesday, December 8, 2020. This session will feature substantive presentations about legal, medical and food trends occurring in the ag aviation nationally and how that might affect you and your business. Aviation attorney John Wright will start the session off by discussing a legal case he tried in Colorado between an aggressive state government agency and reputable, professional aerial applicators. This General Session will be chocked-full of information relevant to operators, ag pilots and suppliers to the industry alike.
Legal Affairs with John L. Wright Keeping good records and displaying professionalism as an aerial applicator can benefit you in drift cases. John Wright, founding attorney of the Law Office of John L. Wright PC, in Broomfield, Colorado, will provide an overview of a drift case gone right and share how good record-keeping and participation in professional aerial application
46 | agairupdate.com
training and organizations can aid you in a positive outcome. Wright successfully represented three Colorado aerial application companies that were facing offtarget application charges filed by the Colorado Department of Agriculture. The case was dismissed by an administrative law judge in January due to evidence showing the professionalism of each operation involved, such as participation in Operation S.A.F.E. fly-ins, keeping application and weather site records, circling the field before the application, checking wind direction and EPA testing for the safety of the products used. The charges against the operators were filed based on complaints made several years before the charges were filed. The Colorado Department of Agriculture investigated these complaints without the operators being aware they had even had a complaint filed against them. When the charges were finally filed, the time for the operators to collect evidence in their favor had long since passed. Fortunately, these operators documented their professionalism, and Wright was able to use this documentation to refute the state’s charges. Hear what you need to do to defend yourself against bogus and egregious complaints from Wright himself.

Wright is an experienced business, tax and aviation attorney who has successfully defended pilots, mechanics, aircraft owners and aviation businesses from administrative actions brought by various agencies including the FAA and IRS. Wright has an agreement with NAAA to provide up to one hour of legal consultation to 2020 NAAA operator and pilot members on federal aviation laws, including federal aviation taxation issues and federal transportation laws. He is also the general counsel for the Colorado Agricultural Aviation Association and a panel attorney for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He is licensed to practice in Colorado and Florida, as well as before the United States Tax Court. Wright is also a commercial pilot, rated for instrument, multiengine and glider flight.
Medical Affairs with Dr. Stan
Musick Dr. Stan Musick is a man who fills many seats in life! Dr. Musick will cover several medical aspects that are pertinent to ag pilots. He will use real-life examples from three pilots, including two agricultural aviators, to describe how medicals can get messed up by pilots, doctors and the system itself. In terms of over-the-counter (OTC) medications, Dr. Musick will describe the half-lives of certain more potent OTC medications, which can be looked up by aviators themselves to determine the length of time a pilot needs to wait after taking the
medication before flying. He will discuss CACIs—Conditions an AME (or aviation medical examiner) Can Issue—as well as what pilots can do to help their AMEs ensure they get their medical. He will also discuss fatigue and how to obtain a special issuance authorization from a medical appeal. Dr. Musick is a lifelong aviation enthusiast who has pursued simultaneous careers in both medicine and aviation. He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine and is boardcertified in anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology. He was trained by the U.S. Air Force as a flight surgeon. He has been an aviation medical examiner for more than 20 years and is a senior AME. Dr. Musick has also pursued his aviation career, receiving his CFII and commercial ratings in the 1970s and has added the ATP, A&P/IA ratings to his “ticket.” He fights fires from the air in an Air Tractor 802 and also flies agricultural aviation in an Air Tractor 502. Active in the warbirds, he flies the P-51 Mustang and the Corsair for the Commemorative Air Force and owns a T6 in which he performs at airshows. With more than 12,000 hours, he remains active in flying for hire and more importantly, understands the significance of a “trouble-free” medical. One of his talents is working through the maze of special issuance and helping airmen obtain flying status when they were convinced they would never be a PIC again. It is rare to find someone well versed in the worlds of medicine and agricultural aviation. Dr. Stan Musick is the man in that regard. The good doctor has indicated to NAAA he will make himself available on the convention floor for further discussions with attendees after the General Session.
editorial director for Agri Marketing, the magazine that is the hub for agribusiness. Henderson will discuss food trends and the growing demand for sustainability and why it’s important to the aerial application industry to keep its pulse on these changes. Millennials are changing the way traditional agriculture operates. Things like sustainability, climate change, veganism and organic food production are of greater importance to millennials on average compared to older generations. The agricultural aviation industry needs to understand what drives these purchasing habits and if and how we might need to adapt to them. Henderson will help provide the insight needed to do just that. He will also discuss the dramatic increases by new organizations that have boosted the investment in agricultural technology and food sectors to $20 billion last year, an increase of 250% in the past five years. Henderson formed the Adel, Iowabased Henderson Communications LLC in 2005. He purchased Agri Marketing and its related properties from Doane Agricultural Services Company. Before forming Henderson Communications, Henderson was president and CEO of Doane, a leading provider of information and marketing advice to the agricultural and food/beverage industries.

Aerial Application Technology Research Session NAAA’s educational programming leads off with the Aerial Application Technology Research Session, led by aerial application researchers, possibly one of the convention’s most substantive sessions. This year’s session will cover several “new” tools and information ready to use as part of your everyday operations. Planned topics include aerial application fundamentals, new spray pattern testing systems, new spray drift protocols, aerial imaging and a look at how important aerial application is to the U.S. economy and our national security. Researchers have been working on most of these projects over the past several years and are eager to help make your applications more efficacious, make you an even better environmental steward and your application business more cuttingedge. Some states offer CEU credits for attending this session, so be sure to sign in at the entranceway. 2020 NAAA Aerial Application Technology Research Session Presentations:
Variation in Your Spray Swath Author: Sam Marx A review of what droplet size is, how droplets of different sizes move and how that movement can impact the uniformity of your swath. Swath uniformity is tied to a value listed in string pattern testing results, coefficient of variation or CV. We will discuss what CV is and how that number can be impacted by adjusting operating parameters (e.g. spray nozzle size, spray pressure, etc.) to provide a more uniform spray swath.

Identification of Cotton Fields Using Aerial and Satellite Imagery
Evaluation of Aerial Application Nozzles
Author: Chenghai Yang Remote sensing has long been used for crop identification, but limited work has been reported on its use for identification of cotton fields when cotton plants are small. Early identification of cotton fields is important for advancing the boll weevil eradication program in Texas. Our previous work has demonstrated that aerial imagery with high spatial resolution (<1 m) was effective for this purpose, but large numbers of aerial images are needed to cover large geographic regions. As no-cost Sentinel-2 satellite imagery that has large area coverage with relatively high resolution (10 m) has become available in recent years, we evaluated this type of imagery for differentiating cotton fields from other crops before cotton plants start to bloom. Multiple cloud-free Sentinel-2 scenes acquired during the growing seasons in 2019 and 2020 over a 6 mile by 6 mile cropping area near College Station, TX, were selected to identify cotton fields. The images were classified into different crops and cover types using multiple classification techniques. Results showed that Sentinel-2 imagery in conjunction with appropriate classification techniques was feasible for distinguishing cotton from other crops. The methodologies presented in this study provide boll weevil eradication program managers with a practical tool to identify cotton fields over large geographic areas at relatively early growth stages.
Author: Brad Fritz The USDA ARS wind tunnel facilities, used to evaluate aerial application nozzles, recently underwent a significant upgrade, adding a spray scrubber, instrumentation to monitor spray system and airstream conditions, and additional automation to existing components. With these improvements comes a need to compare results from the new facilities to data from the older tunnel configuration. Initial assessments measure and compare a standard set of reference nozzles that are designed to reveal any potential errors or bias in data from different facilities or system configurations. Then, to provide comparisons to data contained in the existing USDA ARS Spray Atomization models, a selection of 25 new nozzles for several different nozzle types and orifice sizes were evaluated and the results compared. It is expected that some level or variation in flowrate and droplet size exists between identical, factory new nozzles, however the current models do not account for this. By analyzing the groups of 25 identical nozzles, an expected range in flowrate and droplet size can be determined allowing for more appropriate comparisons to the data from the nozzle models. A number of “worn” nozzles, sourced from applicators were also evaluated for flowrate and droplet size and compared to their factory new counterparts. The results are intended to demonstrate that the new facilities provide comparable data to historical data as well as provide guidance on what potential variation may exist amongst worn new and worn nozzles of the same type.

Development of Analysis Equipment for Pattern Testing Agricultural Aircraft Authors: Randy Price, Daniel Martin, and Kim Brown Pattern testing of agricultural aircraft is an important feature to maintain consistent spray patterns and low coefficients of variation (C.V.). Still, most pattern testing equipment requires multiple people to operate and stores the pattern test strings on reels, which can greatly limit the number and the amount of test you can perform. We have been working on a system to increase the number of tests that can be performed per flight and even allows full-field testing. This system uses a GoPro camera and green laser system mounted at the collection-end of the flight-line to analyze the strings as it is “pulled-in” from the flight-line for reflectance patterns. This system was successfully used during the 2020 season and greatly reduced the number of people needed to operate the flight-line and the work involved in collecting strings allowing for one person to perform tests on many occasions. It was also successfully used to perform multi-pass, large field scale tests, where swath predictions can be checked and verified to help instill confidence in swath width recommendations to spray plane pilots and operators. This presentation will talk about this system, testing methods, and results from these tests.
How Much is the Aerial Application Industry in the United States Worth? Authors: Senarath Dharmasena and Daniel E. Martin Agricultural aerial applications have been used in the United States for nearly one hundred years for producing a safe, affordable and abundant supply of food, fiber and biofuel, in addition to protecting forestry and controlling healththreatening pests. Aerial application is very critical component of highyielding and highly efficient current-day U.S. agriculture. Compared to ground
application equipment, aerial application is up to three times as efficient and can treat a variety of fields. According to a 2019 National Agricultural Aviation Association survey, the agricultural aviation industry in the United States treats about 127 million acres of cropland each year, which is approximately 28% of the total commercially treated U.S. cropland. Aerial application industry in the United States is important to many participants. Most people know that the industry has tremendous value, but having an objective measure of the industry’s far-reaching impact on the U.S. economy would be useful not only to the industry but also to legislators, producers and consumers. The importance of this industry to keep the continuous food, fiber and forestry products supply to the U.S. economy is further highlighted during the current global health crisis related to COVID-19 pandemic. Due to this health crisis, the agricultural supply chains were disrupted as never seen before and it is still important that the U.S. agricultural producers continue to produce healthy, nutritious and affordable food to keep the population fed with the help of agricultural aerial applicators. The big question is what would happen if aerial application were no longer operative. What would be the cost to the U.S. economy? Therefore, given the importance of this industry to the United States economy, this study estimates the economic value of the U.S. aerial application industry. As such, we expect that this study will aid in prudent decision-making for aerial applicators, regulators, and legislators. This study estimates the economic value based on the revenue forgone by U.S. farmers of not having aerial applications to treat their crops, hence loss of cultivated cropland followed by the loss of yield and farm revenue. Crop acreage and production data are gathered from United States Department of Agriculture—National Agricultural Statistical Service (USDA-NASS) crop
production 2018 summaries (published in February 2019). Once this simulation model is run for all crops considered in this study (cotton, corn for grain, wheat, soybean and rice), the total revenue loss of not having agricultural aerial applications to the Texas and the U.S. economy was about $0.7 and $23 billion, respectively, in 2018. This is substantial provided the economic activity that these raw crops would have created.
Aerial Application Methods for Control of Winter Weeds Authors: Dan Martin, Ab Latheef, Juan Lopez, Sarah Duke Prolific growth of weeds is common on Texas farms during early winter and spring when farmers begin chiseling and disking operations for spring planting. Objectives of this research were to evaluate aerial application methodologies for the control of weed species in farmlands left fallow until spring. This is likely to facilitate low or no-till production agriculture through efficacious management of winter weeds. Glyphosate was aerially applied using a fixed wing aircraft and conventional hydraulic and electrostatic nozzles during year one. In year two, rotary atomizers were added as an additional treatment. Control plots were maintained during both years. The spray application rates for the conventional and rotary nozzles were three GPA while that for the electrostatic nozzle was 1 GPA. Aerial and ground-based spectral reflectance data quantified weed injury. The efficacy of each of the aerial application technologies will be discussed. The results from the study will help provide guidance to aerial applicators seeking to make efficacious herbicide applications for control of winter weeds.

AERIAL APPLICATORS ARE ESSENTIAL TO AGRICULTURE NAAA IS ESSENTIAL TO THE INDUSTRY
In Times of Crisis, You Need NAAA in Your Corner. When a crisis strikes, the National Agricultural Aviation Association rises to meet it head-on. When other industries were shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NAAA made sure the aerial application industry was deemed an “essential” business, clearing the way for you to conduct your needed and necessary services without delay. Not only did NAAA make sure that crop input services like the ones aerial applicators provide were listed as essential, your national association successfully petitioned to extend expiration dates for flight medical, commercial pesticide applicator, and numerous other needed licenses to conduct aerial application services so the industry could keep running when government agency offices were shuttered. Aren’t you glad to have a wingman in Washington?

ASU Equips Talon Helicopters AS365 for NVG Firefighting The Talon Helicopters AS365 Dauphin equipped with Aviation Specialties Unlimited, Inc. night vision lighting is ready to battle fires at all hours—the first of its kind approved in Canada. In February, a team of ASU Night Vision Imaging System (NVIS) installers with custom drawings, tools, and lighting parts in-hand ascended on the AS365 in the hangar of Maxcraft Avionics Ltd. completion center in Pitt Meadows, British Colombia, to perform the lighting modification. “We applied a new methodology with this aircraft moving away from supplemental light and using more integrated NVIS components.” said ASU’s Director of Quality Assurance James Haney, “This gives the cockpit more of an OEM look with full NVG compatibility and exceptional daylight readability.” After the installation on the Dauphin was complete, the FAA approved the Supplemental Type Certificate in February, followed by the approval by Transport Canada in March. Talon Helicopters performed nighttime firefighting trials with the aircraft in July.
64 | agairupdate.com
“ASU was the best vendor for the job, and we were thrilled to have them on board,” said Talon’s Director of Maintenance Lorne Lambert. “James and his team didn’t just get the job done; they went above and beyond to do it well.” In addition to its firefighting capabilities, the Dauphin is used for search and rescue, air ambulance, and occasionally for VIP transport at night—another first in Canada. Talon Helicopters’ fleet includes four other Airbus Helicopters for services, including film, utility, and tours. The AS365 is the only one in the fleet equipped for NVG firefighting. They also purchased seven pairs of high-performance white phosphor NVGs from ASU. ASU holds 41 STCs to perform custom night vision lighting modifications and continually adding new ones. Their STCs include the AT402, AT602, AT802, and PZL-Mielec M-18 Dromader. To learn more, visit ASU at NAAA booth 911.

Flexibility in Products, Repairs and Pricing Turbines Inc is the independent PT6A overhaul/ repair shop, since 1981.
Turbines Inc is the independent PT6A overhaul/ repair shop, since 1981. The FAA applies the same rigorous requirements to independent shops like Turbines Inc. that they do to Pratt & Whitney “approved” shops. In fact, independent shops, like Turbines Inc., work from the same required manuals that “approved” Pratt & Whitney overhaul/repair shops do. Independent overhaul/repair shops like Turbines Inc. have more flexibility in products, repairs, and pricing. Our customers get the same quality overhaul from our independent shop as you would from an “approved” Pratt & Whitney shop, for significantly less money. Products – Independent shops can use PMA parts (Parts Manufacturer Approval) A PMA part is a replacement part that has undergone an extensive review process and received
approval from the FAA. Often times the FAA subjects these parts to even more rigorous scrutiny than the OEM parts. PMA parts offer significant cost savings vs. OEM products. Of course, the customer will be consulted as to preference to use OEM or PMA parts. Pricing – Independent shops have greater flexibility in pricing. The same overhauled parts that are used by a Pratt & Whitney shop and an independent shop normally are priced very differently. Pratt & Whitney approved shop usually charges list less a percentage. We normally charge cost plus. This can be a large difference in pricing for the same part resulting in savings from the independent shop. Service Bulletins can selectively be incorporated by an independent shop versus mandated installation in a Pratt & Whitney shop. Take a look behind the scenes on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

100th Loadmaster 4-Blade Propeller Installed Since the release of the LoadMaster propeller in 2015, the results have been very impressive.
Aero Innovations is soaring with the installation of its 100th LoadMaster 4-blade propeller. Since the release of the LoadMaster propeller in 2015, the results have been very impressive. The propeller provides an additional increase of up to 233.6 equivalent shaft horsepower, an increase in thrust, shorter takeoff distance, and increased climb rate. “After working with PT6 engines for more than five decades, I thought there had to be a way to carry heavier loads but still have good turn capabilities. I went to work designing a solution and five years later, we have a highly efficient prop with many satisfied customers,” Aero Innovations Founder and Innovator Jim Mills said. Our 4-blade LoadMaster propellers are proudly flying in New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, and Guatemala. The majority are flying in the US. The installation has also been approved for Canada and
Brazil. Additionally, Aero Innovations has acquired an STC for the Record Intake for Thrush PT6A installation. Aero Innovations has developed a filter system that makes changing and cleaning the filter as easy as changing a furnace filter at home. Our ag aviation program consists of 40 hours of flight time. The 40-hour flight course consist of 15 hours of flight training in a Cessna 170 and 25 hours of flight training in one of our six Pawnees. All flight training is done by an experienced ag pilot. There are three requirements before entering this program; you must have your private pilot’s license, your tailwheel endorsement and a high performance endorsement. While in the Ag Aviation School you can stay in the free student dorm room, have local access to grocery stores, free Internet and a restaurant on site. What makes our aviation program stand out from others is that we offer training on a 3,000-acre working farm and crop dusting business. We now offer a continuing education program for those who want to own/operate their own business in ag spraying, which would include; selling you a plane, maintenance on the plane and mentoring from Kiman Kinsgley while you build your business. AeroLEDs to Launch the Highest Performing 14V PAR46 LED Landing Light on the Market Boise, Idaho - AeroLEDs is adding yet another exciting addition to their highly sought-after SunSpot Series LED Landing line. Voted the Best LED Landing Light by Aviation Consumer, the SunSpot™ LED series consume less power than legacy incandescent bulbs, outperform competitive LED’s, and are vibration and shock resistant making them unaffected by adverse environmental conditions. Outputting a solid, evenly distributed light beam the SunSpot™ LED Series emit exceptional color rendering of an object due to the bright white color temperature, as opposed to “grayed” out images from the lower color temperature of legacy incandescent lamps. The new SunSpot™ 46-4522 14v power 140w LED Landing Light sets the standard for performance with 15,000 Lumens and 200,000 Candela, while using 40% less power significantly reducing the electrical load on the airplane’s battery and alternator system. It also maintains its full light output even at low engine RPM, which is critical for landing configuration. The SunSpot™ 46-4522 will also be available with integrated
pulse providing optimum visibility during extreme operating conditions and negating the need and extra weight of external pulse light boxes. This light is ideal for use in Experimental, Certified, Commercial, ARFF, and Military aircraft. In 2005 AeroLEDs introduced the world’s first all-LED-based aircraft lights, forever changing the aerospace lighting market and setting the bar for performance and quality. With the focus on key metrics like performance, efficiency and reliability, AeroLEDs’ revolutionary landing and navigational lighting products are designed for some of the most extreme operating conditions on the planet and far-exceed the performance of their competitors and legacy lighting systems.

Stor-Loc Modular Drawer System STOR-LOC, Originally designed in 1982, the initial design was a composite of all the best features available in the market at that time. They built their product to last! Today, Stor-Loc is the only manufacturer that adheres to its original design characteristics such as mig-welded corners and full-with, 11 gauge fork channels. Stor-Loc is one of a few companies that do not use nylon rollers in their support system, rather steel ball bearings and heat treated steel rollers that provide consistent, lifetime drawer performance. Our product line consists of work stations, cabinets and complete systems for keeping your tools organized. You can find Stor-Loc at dozens of trade shows all over the U.S. and Canada. Along with their display of the most popular drawers, cabinets and work stations, they also feature new products. Come see us at booth #548 in Savannah.

Pitching In for PAASS
Friendly competition on Sunday, December 6 from 7 – 10 p.m. at the Savannah Convention Center.
We are bringing a fun outdoors game inside to raise money for NAAREF and PAASS! Pitching In For PAASS is a corn-seed bag toss game, also known as Cornhole, where players take turns throwing bags of corn kernels at a raised board with a hole. Join us for this friendly competition on Sunday, December 6 from 7 – 10 p.m. at the Savannah Convention Center. Pitching in for PAASS is a terrific social event with the added benefit of raising money for NAAREF and PAASS and the life-saving, environmental stewardship benefits those entities achieve. Pitching in for PAASS will be a March Madness style tournament that will follow the American Cornhole Association rules. A bag in the hole scores 3-points, while one on the board scores 1-point. The first team to 21 points wins. Games will be capped at 20 minutes each. The scoring judges will call “last round” on any game that has exceeded 20 minutes. Register today!
Teams are two players each. There will be 64 total teams, allowing for 128 participants. The cost to participate is $110 per player. Each person must register separately since this is a NAAREF donation. A cash bar will be available at the cornhole area for drink purchases. Registration is open here. The winning team will receive a fun gift to wear throughout the Ag Aviation Expo. In addition, they will each receive a $125 gift certificate to purchase merchandise at the 2020 NAAA Support Fundraising booth on the NAAA Trade Show floor on Tuesday and Wednesday. Help us raise funds to continue the highly regarded PAASS Program, working to reduce the number of ag aviation accidents and drift incidents each year. With only 128 spots to participate, sign up early so you don’t miss out on this opportunity to catch up with friends and help save lives!

Illuminating Solutions for Night Vision REBTECH proposals offer the best technical solution available.
Established in 1996 by individuals who had extensive experience with Mil-L-85762A (1982), and helped in the development of Mil-Std 3009 (2001) and DO-275 (2001), REBTECH now is enjoying developing new modifications and STC’s for NVG Lighting during their 26th year in business. With over 20 years of experience as an NVIS Part 21 component designer and manufacturer and a Part 145 Instrument and Avionics repair station we have become very proficient designing and manufacturing NVIS lighting systems. From interior lights, edge-lit panels and switches to exterior aircraft lighting, NVIS aircraft installation, certification and flight operations REBTECH is well versed in the conversion and certification of any aircraft. REBTECH was the first company to modify and STC an all NVIS White aircraft for the FAA, since then the FAA has required all civilian STC’s to be NVIS White. REBTECH owns over 30 NVIS STC’s
with over 800 aircraft flying worldwide. REBTECH proposals offer the best technical solution available taking into consideration not only cost of the hardware and installation but aircraft down time, reliability, ease of maintenance and safety. REBTECH received AS9100D Certification in November 2019. Agricultural pilots employ some of the most dangerous and tactically challenging maneuvers in the aviation business. Make sure your instrumentation, avionics, navigation and exterior lighting systems provide you with the best clarity to keep you safe and to complete the task as scheduled. Benefits of nighttime aerial spraying with NVG’s: • Extended flying hours • Protect beneficial pollinators • More accurate application • Less evaporation of the spray agent

Six Things That Should Be On Your Checklist When Choosing Your Helmet Comms Responding to overwhelming customer demand for ANR for aviation helmets, Lightspeed enlisted the help of pilots and experts, and created a purpose-built ANR system specifically for aviation helmets, focused on the comfort and features requested most by the pilots we surveyed. In 2016 the first Zulu H-Mod systems debuted followed by the LSA56 system developed specifically for the HGU-56/P helmet.. The following is a list of the top six criteria we found important, and things to look for when you are considering your next helmet communication installation.
Active Noise Reduction (ANR) A breakthrough technology that is particularly helpful in reducing fatigue, noise induced hearing loss, and improving communications, ANR is a must for today’s aviators. Lightspeed has been producing ANR headset systems in aviation (piston and turbine environments) since 1996, and now a mature technology, it has proven to be a factor in safer, more comfortable flying.
Purpose built There was a temptation to install a “deconstructed” headset into a helmet before the Zulu H-Mod was released. This creates a series of problems including poor fit and comfort, non-optimized ANR, and an abandonment of the manufacturer’s warranty. Lightspeed ANR for helmet systems were designed for this specific application.
Certified installers Getting the installation just right is a key to ensuring the system has the performance and longevity you expect. Lightspeed has hand-picked a global team of skilled technicians and helmet experts and certified them to install and service the systems we sell.
Bluetooth integrated In its early days, Bluetooth may have been viewed as a frivolous feature that pilots in a busy environment would not

use. Today, however, it is a vital way to receive alerts from navigation apps and provide an excellent back communication source.
Safe egress One of the most important features unique to the helmet application is the need for an emergency egress. Lightspeed engineers developed an integrated “quick disconnect” that will automatically break free ensuring that you and your helmet exit the aircraft with no noticeable drag from the connection to the panel.
A Higher Standard of Service Comprehensive Service for your PT6 and TPE331 Turbine Engines
Warranty A deconstructed headset from any brand installed into a helmet has voided the warranty. The installer may or may not offer a supplemental warranty but recognize that if it is not backed by the manufacturer, you may have no warranty at all. Turbine Conversions Ltd. Celebrates 30-Years
(L-R) Mark Grahek, Bill Hatfield, Ann HatfieldGrahek, Greg Munson & Nancy Hatfield.
84 | agairupdate.com
2020 has proven to be a year like no other year before! 2020 is a big year for us at Turbine Conversions, Ltd (TCL), we celebrate 30-years bringing innovation to the Agricultural Aviation market and 50 years for our sister operation Hatfield Spraying Service. It is always is exciting for us to connect with you face to face at the Ag Aviation Expo. We hope you can join us in Savannah at booth 901 and if not that we can meet again soon! This is one of the things that makes TCL unique, we are in the same business as you are. Our president Bill Hatfield knows the challenges you face and wants to bring you products that help you be more profitable and increase safety for your aircraft and crew. TCL is family owned, global business, built on the cornerstones of innovation, quality and integrity. Our customers and business partners become family and are treated accordingly. It all started when Bill & Nancy Hatfield were asked by MELEX USA to develop a turbine powered M18 Dromader. The new Whispering M18 Dromader was one of the first ag aircraft utilized for single engine air tanker firefighting. Bill & Nancy’s involvement in the early days of the Single Engine Air Tanker association helped define the SEAT program we see today. A need for innovative new designs in retardant delivery systems were met with the innovation of the Hatfield Hydraulic Fire Gate and was designed and STCd. The new firegate became one of only three approved by the BLM/USFS and started TCL’s expansion into support equipment for the ag aviation industry. After two decades TCL
firegates have been proven to be reliable equipment fighting fires on around the world. Finding a solution for hot refueling and increasing ground crew safety led to the most popular TCL design, the Single Point Fueling System. Approved in US, Australia, Canada & Brazil and for hot refueling with the BLM. Making TCL SPF system #1 in the world! TCL has continued to invest in the development and acquisition of innovative STC’d technologies. TCL’s current portfolio offers almost 40 STC’s for the agricultural and civil aviation market. As a result of Bill’s years of innovation he was inducted into the Agricultural Aviation Hall of Fame in 2014. Always looking into new ways to solve customer’s problems, TCL developments have helped ag operators increase efficiency and productivity around the world. 2020 saw three new STCs submitted for FAA approval and an amazing partnership with Zanoni Equipamentos. TCL now brings additional quality choices in spray systems to US customers, it is just an additional way that TCL can serve your ag aviation operations! A company doesn’t celebrate 30-years without a great staff, supportive partnerships and amazing customers. We are appreciative of all the amazing relationships we have formed over the past 30-years and are looking forward to the next 30-years! Please let us know how we can serve you in 2020! Tennessee Aircraft Overhauls! We process all the PT6A simplex fuel nozzles and TPE3311 through -12 fuel nozzles to the overhaul standard at competitive prices to shops that work the nozzles to just the maintenance manual standards. For example on competitive prices, the overhaul of a set of PT6A Simplex Nozzles is a true flat rate price on “as removed” nozzles, which includes tip replacements. Now, if you send in the shields, the replacement would be additional along with gaskets and o-rings. We feel the overhaul standard gives you the smallest fuel droplets you can attain versus working a nozzle to the lesser maintenance manual standards, which leave minor streaking and voids in the spray pattern. What you want is the most complete burn of the fuel droplets prior to entering the turbine section, which actually produces the least amount of sooting and carbon. It is this carbon traveling through the turbine section at near the speed of sound that erodes the stators and wheels, which are the big ticket items in the turbine engine maintenance.

Expect More: Spider X Delivers The future of insights and connectivity for General Aviation has arrived, and is now shipping worldwide.
It’s often hard to believe that aircraft tracking was once only attainable for the top tier of aviation. Less than a decade ago, innovations in the sector typically involved heavy boxes and expensive installations — the cost and complexity of these impeding mainstream Adoption. Recent technological advancements have made data and information much more accessible — which means insights into aircraft activity now has the potential to be more than just a dot on the map. Spidertracks’ latest revolutionary device makes that potential a reality. Spider X, announced at Heli-Expo 2020 in Anaheim, California, brings richer, more insightful data to the GA market and is changing the face of aviation safety as we know it. Spider X provides more capability and insights
with the introduction of AHRS data — enabling you to not only know where your aircraft are, but also how they’re being flown. Mission-critical data such as location, speed, altitude, and direction is sent and received via a dedicated Iridium® satellite channel, with assured on-time delivery, every time, without Exception. “We’re carving out a unique opportunity for a digital transformation within a traditionally analogue industry, by redefining the way data is accessed and received from an aircraft, delivering more usable insights and helping solve problems the industry faces,” notes Dave Blackwell, CEO of Spidertracks, “The biggest opportunity we have is to make it a practical reality. We are very excited about the next chapter in the journey.”

The Live Auction continues to be one of the most popular and financially successful fundraisers for the Association. But NAAA could not accomplish this without the support of our many friends and allies. We are grateful to our Allied Industry, State Associations and aerial applicator supporters. All auction donations, big or small, are greatly appreciated, and NAAA recognizes all donations in Association publications and on the NAAA website. The earlier you come forward, the more exposure you’ll get.

Neal Aircraft: A Message to Our Friends
Neal Aircraft is proud to support essential people accomplishing critical work.
90 | agairupdate.com
This year has been tough for all of us, on every front and aviation has been no different. We are facing unprecedented global and national challenges. Through these challenges Neal Aircraft has remained true to our mission statement: our values, servicing our customers, prioritizing our stewardship for the industry and our community. Our commitment has enabled us to keep you flying, and to provide parts and services through every environmental and economic challenge. This focus has allowed us to provide you the support you need to keep you flying. Know we are behind you: to ship you parts, provide you service and most of all, being there for you. Air Tractor has partnered with PPG to develop the safest windshield on the ag market. PPG leads the aerospace industry in technology development for aircraft windows. PPG has a long history of being a leading supplier of flight deck windows to the general aviation, commercial, and military sectors. PPG has key partnerships with most OEMs globally
including, but not limited too, Bombardier, Dassault, Beechcraft, Cessna, Embraer, Gulfstream, Piaggio, Pilatus, Piper, Agusta, Bell, Sikorsky and Eclipse. We are proud to announce Air Tractor’s exciting improvements for its 2021 aircraft line. The new PPG windshield is now standard, which is reportedly more impact resistant than the comparable Storm Shield. Pilot safety is always our primary concern; which is why we’re also proud to announce Air Tractor is incorporating stainless steel entry steps and spray on application wing walk to its line up. Neal Aircraft isn’t successful unless, our loyal customers are successful. We are proud to support essential people accomplishing critical work. Stop by our booth (#733) at the show, we have fantastic giveaways and look forward to seeing you!

What is AgPilotX? AgPilotX is a GPS/GNSS Guidance System that was designed by Insero with two goals: 1) simple installation 2) ease of use. With only 3 components – Lightbar, Hub and iPad, it can be installed in a few hours. A few facts about AgPilotX: • Only 3 components • GPS/GNSS Antenna integrated into the Lightbar • Wireless – uses both Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi technology • Cables can be cut for custom fit – no excess/looped wiring • GNSS receiver uses GLONASS which doubles the number of satellites and reduces/eliminates Lightbar jumping • Features integrated background imagery of the entire planet • Total system weight is under 12 lbs (including cables) • Helicopter Lightbar reduces system weight to under 8 lbs • Email logs directly from the aircraft • All software updates done over the air • Entire system driven by any Apple device – iPad or iPhone – free App available on the Apple App store To add Flow Control to AgPilotX, simply plug any meter and valve directly into the Hub. The most appealing feature of AgPilotX is the ease at which a pilot can learn to use it. Running as an Apple App makes it extremely user friendly. And with all the features accessible with simple screen taps, it can be learned in a matter of minutes. Most pilots, young and old, say they learned to use the system on the way to the field. And with background imagery a standard part of the system, the situational awareness that the AgPilotX app offers makes the guidance system second to none. 96 | agairupdate.com
Insero introduced the AgPilotX Guidance System in the 2018 season. There are now over 500 systems in the field. 2021 will be season number 4 for the product, which has been steadily adding features over the years.
What’s coming for AgPilotX? The 2021 season will bring real time tracking and variable rate, as well as many functional features such as pin dropping, additional pattern features such as Multi-Back-to-Back and communication with additional third-party devices and software. Insero will introduce AgHippo realtime tracking early in 2021. Insero released real-time tracking for its ground product, AgOtter, in 2017. This gives Insero 4 seasons of experience and adding improvements, so it can hit the ground running with a vetted tracking product when adding this feature to AgPilotX. What makes the real-time tracking in AgPilotX so unique is the fact that it is driven through a simple login on the iPad. Once logged in, the data is automatically pushed to the cloud as soon as you tap the AgPilotX App, making it simple to connect and see the aircraft from anywhere in the world. And the pilot is not dependent on any clumsy third-party device like USB modems or time-consuming tethering methods. Finally, by logging into Insero’s website www.AgHippo.com, multiple aircraft can be viewed in real-time, knowing their precise location at any given moment. Area/Acres sprayed and spray rates can be viewed along with flight paths and volume sprayed per aircraft. In 2020, Insero released automatic boom and gate control. This allows liquid and dry material to be automatically turned on and off based on polygon boundaries (Shape files). This feature paves the way for the release of Variable
Rate in 2021. With Variable Rate capability, prescription maps can be loaded which allow multiple rates to be setup throughout the field, and the spraying or spreading to vary based on those maps. In the coming months, AgPilotX will release an update designed around a collaboration with AgSync. The update will allow Work Orders to be created in AgSync and then sent directly to the aircraft. When the aircraft finishes the job, the data will automatically go to AgSync, informing the office of all the work done for each job, precisely when it is done. Less work for the pilot and easier transmission of the day’s work – to and from the pilot – without the need for any button pushes whatsoever.
AgPilotX Technical Support Insero views great technical support as a key to its success in the aerial application business. Insero has some of the most experienced individuals in the business with regard to GPS and Guidance Systems. To this end, Insero has added an AgPilotX hotline at 602-610-1299. All calls are tracked and followed up on, so add this to your phone list and rely on Insero to answer any questions about AgPilotX or GPS and guidance systems in general. AgPilotX will be at Booth 727 at the upcoming 2020 NAAA Convention in Savannah, GA. Insero has a product session at the show so check your guide and plan to attend. Insero will continue to develop AgPilotX with customer input as the driving force for the product’s evolution. Share your thoughts and ideas about AgPilotX with Insero at the booth or online at www.agpilotx.com. Anyone interested in onsite demos or webinars/ tutorials on the software, contact the hotline listed above.
