24TH ANNUAL NAAA CONVENTION SHOW GUIDE

SUPPLEMENT

Putting more food on the table. Agricultural aviation plays a vital role in increasing the world’s food supply – and it’s time to spread the word. That’s why we’re launching the Feeding the World Tour this summer. It’s a campaign designed to build awareness and appreciation for what ag pilots and their aircraft do to bring more food to more tables every day. Those of us in the business may take it for granted – but an increasingly hungry planet simply can’t. No matter what you fly, we’re proud to support you. Because feeding more folks is a cause well worth flying for.

For more information on the Feeding the World campaign, or to learn more about our aircraft, visit us online – or call Eric Rojek at 229.789.0437.

Thrush Aircraft

A message from Thrush Aircraft It’s NAAA show time again and all of us here at Thrush are looking forward to seeing you in Long Beach next month. More important, we’re hoping you’ve had a great spray season and that in the winter months ahead you’ll have some time to not only rest and recharge, but also to think about next season and how to make it even stronger for yourself and for your operation. Speaking of this year’s season, reports are that it’s been much stronger for many operators than last. And here at the factory, we’re happy to say our sales numbers reflect this same level of upturn. For the first time in several years we’re wrapping up the season with no white tails in inventory – and for that, we are very grateful. This means more new Thrush aircraft are being put to work than ever before, and it’s very gratifying to know that the airplanes we build are continuing to be so well received. More airplanes in the field create the need for more support – and in that regard we’re increasing our commitment to customer assistance by adding to our Customer Assurance And Support (CAAS) program here at the factory. The folks staffing our CAAS team are specifically trained to assist in just about every way – and to ensure you have the information, parts and service capabilities you need to help keep your airplane working day-in and day-out – just like it was built to do. If you haven’t tried our CAAS department, please give them a call. We think you’ll be impressed by the improved responsiveness and willingness to assist with virtually any issue you may encounter. It’s all a part of what we think makes owning a Thrush today a better experience than ever.

Another big part of owning a Thrush is being part of a family that cares deeply not only about building airplanes, but also about helping build our industry. This is something we’re continuing to do in two important ways: Improved awareness and creating more new pilots. From an awareness standpoint, this year we launched the “Feeding the World” campaign, which is designed to spread the word about what ag pilots do and the level of professionalism and skill you bring to the job. The ad on the page to the left tells the story. We began the campaign at Oshkosh 2016 in front of some 400,000 show-goers – then followed it up with a multi-city tour that’s just wrapped for the year. It was great fun to see crowds respond so favorably – from walk-around tours of the new 510G, to on-wing check-outs for pilots in local areas, to simply talking to folks about the important role ag aviation plays in feeding our planet. It was truly gratifying to see so many people want to learn more, and we’ll be continuing the campaign next year – so be sure and make plans to join us if you can. Bringing new pilots into ag aviation is another cause we believe deeply in. This year we not only continued support of our annual $10,000 Thrush Agricultural Aviation Scholarship program with Women in Aviation International, we also worked closely with GE Aviation to create three new $5,000 ag aviation scholarships which will be administered by NAAA in 2016. The program is called “Ag Wings of Tomorrow” and you can stop by NAAA’s booth at the show to learn more. If you know someone you’d like to have considered for either of these terrific programs, sign them up – as helping

create more qualified ag pilots is a cause well worth supporting. Last but certainly not least – we’re happy to report that owning a new Thrush just got about 25,000 times easier, as GE Aviation is now offering us a $25,000 dollar discount on the next fifteen H80 engines that power our Thrush 510G. This savings is significant – but it’s only for a limited time – as once the next fifteen airplanes are gone, they’re gone, along with this special discount offer. So if you’ve been on the fence about putting a new Thrush in your hangar, act now and you can do so at the best price ever. That’s a lot of news in a short amount of time, but it’s easy to be excited when there’s so many good things going on. However the most important thing we want to share in this message is a thank you. For your business. For your friendship and support. And for being a part of this amazing industry. We’re very grateful for what you do – and for allowing us to be a small part of it with you.

And, in addition to a growing emphasis on CAAS, we’re also continuing our commitment to growth in field support – and this year opened new factory authorized Service Centers in North Dakota and Uruguay. Both are staffed by long-time Thrush technicians and, like every Thrush Service Center, are dedicated to helping you keep your airplane in top condition.

California — Here we come! After NAAA’s highly successful convention last year in Savannah, it will be a hard act to follow for this year’s NAAA convention. However, NAAA has lined up an excellent venue and a fantastic schedule in Long Beach, California. For those of us flying to the convention, Long Beach is positioned equally on the west coast between KLAX and KSNA (John Wayne-Orange County International/Santa Ana) making it easy to get there. Already two months in advance of the convention, the room reservations have exceeded those of Savannah at this same time in 2015. Although there will be a limited number of aircraft (one of each Air Tractor and Thrush, a helicopter and a Travel Air), the number of exhibitors exceeds those that exhibited in Savannah. All this points to a highly successful convention in the making.

hall will be open the usual days of Tuesday at noon until 6 p.m. and on Wednesday 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The convention will end Thursday evening, December 8th with the Farewell Reception and Awards Banquet. Reading the pages of this year’s AgAir Update’s Show Guide about the NAAA Convention and Exhibition will inform you about what to do, where to go and when to do it. For those of you not yet registered, everything you need to know about how to do that can be found here.

However, this year’s convention is very special. It celebrates the 50th anniversary of the formation of the NAAA in 1966 with Dick Reade serving as its first president. This year the theme of the convention is focused around the last 50 years and how NAAA has become the effective association it is and those who helped make it happen.

The purpose of AgAir Update’s Show Guide is primarily two-fold; promote attendance to the NAAA Convention and Exhibition and better facilitate attendees’ time. When you read the Show Guide, you will see exhibitors’ ads featuring their products and services. In some cases, you will read a more detailed accounting of what you can expect when stopping by an exhibitor’s booth. You will also read about speakers, the program schedules for attendees and their spouses, as well as many other important events taking place. Like last year, the Support Committee’s events are open to everyone, so be sure to attend!

The convention begins December 5 with the Welcome Reception Monday night and officially starts Tuesday at noon with the opening of the exhibit hall, although there will be sessions and meetings on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. The exhibit

Reading AgAir Update’s Show Guide is an exercise in preparation. It will help you identify which sessions and receptions to attend and which exhibitors should be at the top of your list to visit. I hope you can attend all events NAAA has scheduled. I

know having quality time with over 150 exhibitors can be a challenge. Planning with AgAir Update’s Show Guide will help you achieve that goal. Be sure that one of the exhibitors you plan to visit is AgAir Update at booth 634. From the entrance, Walk to the left of the NAAA booth straight back. Let’s talk ag-aviation. These are exciting times and AgAir Update is right smack in the middle of them. We will be moving throughout the exhibit hall making videos and taking photos. Be sure to wear your best smile. Expect a good time while attending NAAA’s convention in Long Beach, California celebrating its 50th anniversary. There will be fantastic opportunities to grow your business, increase your profits and enhance the safety of your operation by attending the NAAA’s annual convention and exhibition December 5-8, 2016. Be there! I will be looking for ya!

From the NAAA

Golden opportunities abound at NAAA’s 50th anniversary convention! On behalf of the National Agricultural Aviation Association, we would like to invite all AgAir Update readers to NAAA’s 50th Annual Convention & Exposition December 5–8 in Long Beach, California. We’re headed to the Golden State for a Golden Anniversary celebration! Golden opportunities abound at the world’s largest gathering of agricultural aviation industry professionals. It doesn’t matter if you are a veteran operator or a fledgling ag pilot, you won’t find a better outlet to help you achieve your personal goals and business objectives. The fun begins at the 2016 Kickoff Breakfast. We are pleased to present Col. Mike Mullane, a retired astronaut, acclaimed author and avid mountain climber. He was selected as a mission specialist in 1978 in the first group of Space Shuttle Astronauts and completed three space missions aboard the Shuttle Discovery (STS-41D) and Atlantis (STS-27 & 36) before retiring from NASA and the air force in 1990. Col. Mullane has written an awardwinning children’s book, Liftoff! An Astronaut’s Dream, and his popular memoir, Riding Rockets: The Outrageous Tales of a Space Shuttle Astronaut. Mullane has also had a lifelong passion for mountain climbing. Since the age of 60, he has summited Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as Mount Rainier and 35 of Colorado’s 14,000-feet peaks. Attendees will be inspired to reach new heights of their own after Col. Mullane’s address! The 2016 General Session will celebrate 50 years of NAAA. Join us for the premiere of NAAA’s 50th anniversary documentary, which will explore key drivers of the association’s development and growth over the course of NAAA’s history, as well as the essence of what makes NAAA NAAA. After the screening, a few past and present NAAA leaders will participate in a panel discussion on the “Past, Present & Future of Aerial Application” moderated by none other than AgAir Update’s Bill Lavender. The General Session will

conclude with futurist Bob Treadway exploring the future of agriculture. We have nearly 25 hours of educational sessions, including programs focused on UAVs, cover crops, chemicals, engine performance, helicopters, airframe sessions with Air Tractor and Thrush Aircraft, and more. We are also excited about the continuation of the NAAREF Safety Session for all operators and pilots, two sessions of Compaass Rose and the “Ask the Expert” Speed Mentoring Session for new and low-time ag pilots. The PAASS presenters—our roving safety instructors— will moderate Compaass Rose, an information-sharing session geared toward low-time and prospective ag pilots on Dec. 4 and Dec. 8. NAAREF also will host the “Ask the Expert” Speed Mentoring Session on Dec. 8. This fast-paced orientation session for new and prospective ag pilots consists of a series of speed mentoring rounds led by experienced operators and pilots, insurance representatives and ag schools. The NAAREF Safety Session is highly recommended for aerial applicators of all experience levels. This year’s session will focus on disaster “precovery”—how to prepare as best as possible in advance for a catastrophic incident at an operation like an aircraft accident and/or loss of a pilot. The Aerial Application Technology Research Session, which follows the Kickoff Breakfast, is the R&D portion of the convention. Industry researchers will report on a number of research projects that will benefit our industry. Full descriptions of this year’s research presentations are available at AgAviation/asabesession. Several states are granting CEUs for this session. For specific solutions for your business look no further than NAAA’s two-day exposition. The world’s largest agricultural aviation trade show brings buyers and sellers of aerial application-related products, supplies

and services together under one roof. Visit with 150+ exhibiting companies and view the four featured aircraft at the 2016 NAAA Trade Show. Don’t miss the fun of the Live Auction, which also happens to be our biggest fundraiser. Along with a new PT6A-34AG engine from Pratt & Whitney Canada and a three-blade Hartzell propeller from Air Tractor, a number of other great items are up for bid. Check out all the items at AgAviation.org/auctions. The action gets underway at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 6. After long convention days, you’ll be ready to unwind, and NAAA can help with that too. We’ve got wall-towall receptions, including the Welcome Reception (December 5), Live Auction Reception (Dec. 6), Pratt & Whitney Canada Reception (Dec. 6) and Farewell Reception (Dec. 8). Download the NAAA Convention App to receive updates and have the most up-to-date information right on your mobile devices. The app features the full schedule of events, state CEU information, auction items, an interactive NAAA Trade Show floor map and more! It’s your one-stop shop for everything you need to know onsite. Learn more at AgAviation.org/conventionapp. That’s just a taste of what you’ll find at NAAA’s 50th Annual Convention & Exhibition. You’ll find much more information within these pages and on NAAA’s website at AgAviation.org. Please join us for what promises to be an unforgettable week! Air Tractor 502XP returns for NAAA 50th Anniversary Convention Coming off a successful tour across America, the Air Tractor 502XP will be on display December 5-8 in Long Beach, California during the National Agricultural Aviation Association Convention and Exposition. Air Tractor’s newest ag plane drew keen interest from prospective Air Tractor owners and pilots during The 502XP American Expedition, reports Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch. The aircraft and teams from Air Tractor and Pratt & Whitney Canada travelled to all seven Air Tractor dealer regions in the United States. “Air Tractor dealers hosted fly-ins this fall to provide pilots with a up-close, hands-on look at the new 502XP. Many got an opportunity to fly the airplane. The events were, by all reports, very well received and well attended.” The 502XP American Expedition capped a strong debut for the airplane. Air Tractor built four of the 500-gallon capacity airplanes in 2015. By the time FAA type certification was received in March, the airplanes had been sold. Now at year’s end Hirsch reports a total of nine 502XP aircraft will have been delivered. “Midway through the year, we saw overall aircraft orders firming up, so we added several more 502XP aircraft to our 2016 build schedule. And now, after scores of pilots flew the 502XP during September, October and November, dealers tell me they are pleased with the interest and follow-up generated by The 502XP American Expedition,” says Hirsch. Following-through on that interest, Shane Donovan of “Ag by Air” in Minneapolis, Kansas, finalized the sale and took delivery of a new 502XP during the kick-off event at Lane Aviation.

6E

agairupdate.com

The 502XP takes its place in an extensive line of Air Tractor aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) engines. The new PT6A-140AG turbine engine, paired with a 4-blade Hartzell propeller, provides the power that enhances the 502XP’s productivity. The engine produces 867 shaft horsepower, an increase of 117 SHP over the PT6A-34AG. In addition to its extra power, the 502XP has a large vertical stabilizer and rudder paired with a carefully balanced airframe, which results in improved control and handling characteristics. With a cruising speed of 167 MPH, a rate of climb of 816 fpm at 10,480 lbs, and 5% better specific fuel consumption, the 502XP offers operators a costeffective and high-quality plane for spraying, seeding, and fertilizer applications. Pilots who flew the 502XP had good words for the aircraft’s power and performance. Their first impressions generally focused on the 502XP responsiveness, speed and its quiet 4-blade prop. South Texas aerial applicator Dan Kubecka gave the airplane a good workout at a September fly-in event. With the hopper filled to the brim, Kubecka said the 502XP quickly broke free of the runway and handled well through his turns. “With a full load, I didn’t have to baby it through the turns. It powered right through,” noted Kubecka. “It’s a well-balanced, sweet-handling airplane.” And with four of the 502XP aircraft working during this past season, operator field reports are equally positive. Northwest Oklahoma aerial applicator Terry Mundell took the first delivery of a 502XP airplane in April. He spent this season spraying alfalfa and pasture

over the hot, high plains of the Oklahoma and Texas panhandle, flying a total of about 150 hours. The 502XP performance meets his expectations he says.“It’s all they said it would be. They’ve got it designed really well. It’s fast. Handles nice. It carries the load well in the turns,” Mundell reports. “I’m doing at least 20 percent more acres just from the time saved by its faster ferry speed.” Ferrying speed for Mundell is a bit over 150 mph. He sprays at 160 mph. At 1970-2000 pounds of torque and 1720 RPM, Mundell says his 502XP burns 63 gallons an hour. “With this 502XP, I think Air Tractor’s got the 502 perfected.” Hirsch picks up on Mundell’s observations. “I think Terry Mundell chose the ideal airplane for his operation, because his operating area has both 100+ degree temperatures and higher elevations.” That’s where the 502XP excels, Hirsch adds. “As Terry is demonstrating, the 502XP helps pilots cover more acres in less time, compared to other 500-gallon planes. It provides an extra margin of engine performance for high/hot conditions. And who wouldn’t like to have more horsepower?” The Air Tractor 502XP will be on display at booth number 725 during the NAAA Trade Show at the Long Beach Convention Center. Ag-Tip Winglets have been re-engineered

Winglet technology for agricultural aircraft provides several benefits. Winglets diffuse wingtip vortices. Independent studies show that the AG-TIPS installation reduces drag, reduces the impact on spray particles for a wider swath and with more spray deposited on target. AG-TIPS winglets are STC’d for most models of Air Tractor, Thrush, and Cessna agricultural aircraft. Production has started, so get your set ordered today in order to enjoy the benefits for next season. Rick Marburger Phone : 701-572 3514 Email: rckmrbrgr@gmail.com

Praxidyn

This is the year! You may have met us at the NAAA annual conventions and seen our Mixmate product. We have been coming to the convention for five years and listening to the issues with chemical handling, recordkeeping, and accounting. A comment I heard at a recent tradeshow was, “Sometimes you don’t want a Cadillac, you just want to get the job done.” At first, I didn’t realize how profound this statement was. It got me thinking about how Mixmate compares to the competition for automated mixing systems. Most automated systems are designed to be used by an ag retailer as a large stationary mixing plant. Those systems are beautiful and expensive! The real beauty of Mixmate comes in the engineering of the hardware and software to provide the features of a Cadillac system without the complexity or cost.

Connected. A connected system means your mixing data goes directly into your recordkeeping system. A data connection is the number one feature the ag retailer requires. Data is synchronized between the systems in the field and the office through our Intersect cloud service and API connections. Work orders and reports can be generated in Intersect or other third party software systems. AgConnections and others are committed to these data connections to streamline office operations during the busy spray season. Simple. Easy to use and easy to learn. A work order makes Mixmate extremely fast and easy to use in the field. An operator just selects the job, and the Android app is populated with the plan for the mixing operation. The operator only has to follow the prompts

Mixmate has options for small farms to large enterprises. Keep expensive machines rolling. Reduce errors and lost inventory. Easy to use and learn.

Mixmate is the first system designed with data integration and portability. No other system offers the features and flexibility of Mixmate for automated mixing and recordkeeping.

to complete the mixing and the records are automatic. Best Value. A well-engineered system will cost less, have more features, and excellent quality. Mixmate uses CAN Bus to simplify the electrical system greatly. CAN Bus allows our system to be modular and flexible. If you want large or small inductors, and/or flowmeters, a system can be designed for your needs today and is flexible if additional features are needed later. Yes! This is the year to make operations more efficient in the office and the field. Stop by our Booth 957 next to Thrush and find out how Mixmate can help you get the job done in 2017. Ask Kathy about the pencil puzzle, can you solve it? We look forward to seeing good friends and meeting you in Long Beach.

Chemical Mixing Streamlined

Data connects to office recordkeeping systems to reduce labor in the office and the field. Mixmate is your best value to streamline operations.

Field results show it pays to take Control™ by Dennis Gardisser, WRK of Arkansas, dgardisser@wrkofar.com It’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but every once in a while I come upon something that is worth repeating. I’m sure many of you have heard the 80-10-10 story that I tell when it comes to drift reduction products: 80 percent of the time nothing happens, 10 percent of the time the result is worse, and 10 percent of the time there is a definite improvement. Laboratory results may be better, but actual field experience has been pretty close to this. For years, Arkansas S.A.F.E. clinics have included one day of field evaluations of drift potential. These evaluations have included a variety of different equipment setups and operating variables and typically include the favored drift reduction additives for the area. The data has been quite sporadic and probably a reflection of the variety of setups, weather conditions, mixing procedures, and operating variables. With all that said, there have been a few products that consistently show a positive response. Control™ from GarrCo Products, Inc., has been one of the products that has consistently shown a reduction in drift potential. A replicated field study was conducted a few years ago to look at 19 different drift control additives and water using two aircraft. The aircraft were selected to give two separate speed scenarios, at 115 and 150 mph. This study appears on Garrco.com. I encourage you to obtain a copy of that report and see how you favorite product performed. Control™ was one of the top performing products in this study. The key to consistency can also hinge back to how well products perform under real field situations. Arkansas had many operators utilizing Control™ as a drift control additive. Some of the comments I hear are:

20E

agairupdate.com

457

• “Best material I’ve ever used.” • “Very easy to mix and load.” • “The material that I used to get on the windshield is gone.” • “Where can I get some Control™ ?” When one starts hearing these types of comments, there may be more to the performance than just good lab results. I was visiting a couple of different operators during the season and overheard conversations where they were either going to borrow some Control™ from someone else’s pallet until their shipment came in or another operator was coming to borrow some from there. This alone may tell the true story on performance. Mixing and compatibility are one of the major issues with any drift reduction additive. John Garr and I met with an Arkansas aerial applicator on a very cold morning to evaluate several different tank mixes. John has some new products under development and the mix results on those are another story, but we tried every way we could think of to cause mix problems with Control™ without success. Control™ mixed very easily under all scenarios, even with almost ice-cold water! I have had any number of operators ask me which drift control products are best. I’m not so sure there is a best product. Remember there are many application variables. I would recommend that operators select a product that consistently shows positive results. Also, additives alone are not the complete answer, although properly utilized; they may provide an extra margin of safety. Operators should use every tool possible to avoid drift, and proper equipment setup and operation will always play a dominant role.

From one employee in 1966 the ZEE family has grown to over 30 aviation professionals. “Zee Company” is an FAA and EASA approved Part 145 Repair Station with Unlimited Class I, II, III appliance “return to service” capabilities. Aircraft and helicopter operators with single seat to transport category fleets worldwide rely on “Zee Company” for quality component repairs. “ZEE Systems” is approved by the FAA to manufacture articles under Part 21 and has Parts Manufacturer Approval (FAA-PMA) to provide new and replacement airworthy aircraft parts. All of us at “Zee Company” and “ZEE Systems” would like to say “thank you” for your past support and continued confidence in our products and services. FYI, Claude Zaiontz is in his late 80’s and comes in almost every day to keep us on our toes.

Texas State Technical College

TSTC in Waco now offers ag pilot training program Texas State Technical College offers a pilot training program on its Waco campus that takes everyday individuals and transforms them into professional pilots. TSTC offers private, instrument, commercial, airline transport and instructor certificate training in single- and multi-engine aircraft and now offers a complete agricultural aircraft operations training program that can help you quickly get the skills you need to join the aerial application industry. TSTC, which has been training pilots since 1968, operates the country’s largest college-owned airport. It also recently achieved the milestone of being the only agricultural flight training program in the nation approved by the Federal Aviation Administration. This means that the FAA has reviewed the curriculum of training and found that it meets the necessary standards

of safety and excellence. FAA approval also means that there will be access to federal student aid, including VA funding, for those who qualify (anticipated in 2017) and that you, as a student, will have the benefit of working with highly experienced, trained and standardized instructors. Our program highly values giving you both quality and flexibility. You, the pilot, will have the option to choose between a complete flight training program, consisting of both ground and flight training over a full spectrum of aerial application topics or a flexible on-demand subject structure that can cover introductory or advanced subject matter. You will be able to choose from everything between a tailwheel transition and basic agricultural operations introduction, all the way up through a turbine aircraft operator with experience

with the most advanced technology and equipment available. To your benefit, our program uses the Cessna L-19 Bird Dog and the Air Tractor AT-504. L-19s provide the student with an excellent exposure to tailwheel flying and the necessary experience to advance confidently into larger tailwheel aircraft. The AT-504 is an industrytested and proven platform for delivering high-quality agricultural flight training. The AT-504 will also allow you to become proficient in the use of turbine aircraft for agricultural operations, as you will spend over 60 percent (27 flight hours) of our approved training course in the AT-504. Kimmel Aviation Ins. Kimmel Aviation Insurance arose from a need to write hard-to-find and much needed insurance on cropdusters in 1972. The insurance side of the business started very pragmatically as customers were coming to the Kimmel Aviation Ag Aircraft dealership to trade in their $500 converted Super Cubs and Stearmans for the more productive and shiny new Cessna Ag Wagons and Ag Trucks. The $20,000 price tag and the ever evolving regulatory environment in the early 1970s mandated that all certified applicators must carry a minimum liability insurance policy or a bond

of $10,000. Cessna Finance also wanted to make sure their loans were protected. Very few companies would insure ag aircraft back in the early 1970s, so Dorothy Kimmel made it her mission to find that coverage for their customers. From its humble beginnings, the insurance part of the business grew and formally incorporated Kimmel Aviation Insurance Agency, Inc. in 1979. Over the years, Dorothy Kimmel has received numerous industry awards including, but not limited to MAAA Outstanding Service Award – 1975, MAAA President’s Award – 1985, WMAAA President, 15 years WMAAA Director to the WNAAA, WNAAA Vice Pres. 1991, WNAAA President 1992, Lee Abide Award – 1998, Arkansas (AAAA) Distinguished service award 2006, MAAA Honorary Lifetime Membership Award – 2006. In addition, Dorothy also served on numerous committees and served both the NAAA and MAAA for each of her 45+ years as a member of both organizations. Her most outstanding achievement was to raise a family of four boys, all who entered the ag aviation field and chose career paths closely related to ag aviation. Although Dorothy is still active in the agency, her youngest son, Frank Kimmel, took over the day to day operations of Kimmel Aviation Insurance Agency in 2004. Frank brings with him 14,000 hours of flying experience including 8000+ as an ag pilot. Frank also has his own pedigree of accomplishments including , 1992 John Horne Memorial Safety award (NAAA), Novartis Leadership training delegate – 1998, NAAA Related Service Award – 2008, Arkansas (AAAA) Outstanding Service Award 2008, and Trust Kimmel Aviation Insurance Agency to find the best rates and the MAAA Allied Industry Associate of customized coverage for your agricultural aviation operation. We have the year 2010. nationwide reach with small town service...when you call, we answer. In addition to the ag association So don’t worry when you’re in the air; Kimmel has you covered. awards, Frank was elected by his aviation insurance peers to serve on the Aviation Insurance Association (AIA) Board of Directors in 2005. He served as the Director of the Domestic Agents and Brokers Division until he was elected Vice President of the AIA in 2009 and then AIA President for 2011 – 2012. As you can see, it is true when their ads say, “When you need a respected voice 442 Airport Road, Greenwood, MS 38930 • www.kimmelinsurance.com to work for you, “The Kimmel’s Have You Covered”!”

Flight Plan Online brings together some of the best technologies to give you a better way to communicate with your customers and manage your business so you can focus on spraying more acres. You and your pilots will be able to spend more productive time in the air and less time doing paperwork. Your customers will appreciate the professional and accurate mapping that Flight Plan Online provides as well as its ease of use. They will welcome the ability to track the progress of their job orders with no phone calls. The most powerful component of Flight Plan Online is the ability to process job orders using a centralized online system. This allows you or your customers to submit accurate jobs orders with georeferenced field maps. As job orders come in you can review them for accuracy and formally accept the work. Job orders can

also include sensitive area alerts, field worker alerts, and adjacent crop identification to let you assess the level of risk. You can see all outstanding jobs on a map screen to filter those jobs into the most efficient batches for spraying. You can easily schedule job batches with common products and geographic proximity. Flight Plan Online generates all the information needed by the pilot, including loading sheets, individual job maps, and master maps that give an overview of all field locations. You can easily upload shape files to your guidance system to make the most of the guidance technology that is already in your plane. After spraying you can record actual application information and if desired, download the data from your guidance system to include as-sprayed imagery. You can then generate invoices from the job details already captured in the process, even on the same day you spray! Flight Plan

Live and silent auctions The Live Auction at the NAAA Convention & Exposition continues to be one of the most popular and successful fundraisers for the Association. When it comes to high-stakes entertainment, the intrigue, drama and excitement of NAAA’s Live Auction is hard to beat, which is why it has become one of the signature events at each convention. The Live Auction on “Convention Tuesday” is very important to NAAA from a fundraising standpoint, so enjoy the reception food and beverages and bring your checkbooks. Shhhh! NAAA also holds a Silent Auction each year. Bidding opens on Tuesday and closes on Wednesday afternoon. The Live Auction continues to be one of the most popular and successful fundraisers for the Association. But NAAA could not accomplish this without the support of our many friends and allies. We are grateful to our Allied Industry, State Associations and aerial applicator supporters. All auction donations, big or small, are greatly appreciated, and NAAA recognizes all donations in Association publications and on the NAAA website. The earlier you come forward, the more exposure you’ll get. Live Auction reception sponsored by Syngenta.

Come see what is new at Transland!

Transland will have a new, larger display at this year’s NAAA convention in Long Beach. As interest and sales of our many popular product lines grow, Transland’s space at the convention is growing as well. We are excited to have a new item as well at the booth in Long Beach. Drop by and register for one of several custom Transland duffle bags we will be giving away. Selected exclusively for our ag pilot customers, this bag can be a back pack or duffle with room for important papers, clothing or other gear, and your pilot’s helmet as well! Just register at our booth and you could be a winner! For new products, most significantly this year Transland acquired the Davidon dispersal product line which includes the Hi-Tek rotary nozzles, Tri-Set nozzles, boom clamps, aluminum booms, J-tubes and more. This is a great addition to the CP Products line of nozzles that Transland added several years ago. The Transland 7 ½” Gate Box continues to be a very popular new product. Operators are finding the Transland 7 ½” Gate to be a perfect size gate for every job. We have many more success stories from pilots using the hydraulic model with the ability to easily and precisely set the gate to your desired pounds per acre.

Transland will also have a display of our Wingman system at the NAAA show. We’ll show you how easy it is to save time and money by actuating the hopper door and equalizing your load, all from the cockpit.

We also invite you to come to the Transland breakfast seminar on Tuesday, December 6th. Dr. Dennis Gardisser will be with us once again this year to pass along the latest industry news and trends that will lower your risks and help you maximize every trip.

Lane Aviation

Booth

Celebrating over 70 years Lane Aviation, Inc. is thrilled to be celebrating its 71st year in business. Our company prides itself on maintaining strict business ethics practices that translates into integrity for every facet of Lane Aviation. We believe this honesty is what has gained trust amongst so many customers and allowed us to become one of the leading Air Tractor distributors for sales, service, and support. Lane Aviation’s association with agricultural application began with George Lane and Leland Snow in College Station, Texas in 1957: Leland was demonstrating the S2A. George gave Leland a deposit on one of the first five built! Shortly thereafter, Lane Aviation became a dealer for Snow Aircraft. Therefore, when Leland Snow started Air Tractor, Lane Aviation’s business relationship with Snow was already well established. Lane Aviation was appointed the first Air Tractor dealer in 1974. Since then, Lane Aviation has sold more Air Tractors than anyone else in the world, making it the #1 Air Tractor dealer. Lane Aviation has always been a family-run company. One of George’s sons, Grant Lane, is the President of Lane Aviation. Mark Lane, George’s other son, is the Chief Pilot for the ag operation at Lane Aviation. Grant is now bringing a third generation to the business

and, with it, a fresh perspective. Grant’s son, Logan Lane, is a pilot and graduate of Texas A&M University. Grant’s life-long experience in the ag aviation business makes him the perfect mentor. Logan is learning how customers have come to count on Grant’s highly personalized customer service skills. Whether a customer is upgrading his Air Tractor fleet, making the transition to Air Tractor or to turbine power, Grant is there to help and advise every step of the way. Lane Aviation, Inc., operates from its own airport with the identifier of T54. The maintenance facility can handle every type of Air Tractor aircraft maintenance, as well as most other ag planes. This includes annual and routine inspections, major airframe repairs, and engine exchanges. If necessary, we can also facilitate the out-sourcing of major engine repairs. With Air Tractor factory-training and FAA certified A&P and IA mechanics, customers are assured of the highest quality work on their aircraft. Also located at Lane Air Park is the fully stocked parts department of Lane Aviation. Not only is it essential to have parts on hand to facilitate repairs made in the maintenance shop, but it is paramount to have an extensive inventory readily available to ship to our customers. Lane Aviation has maintained its own

Grant Lane, President of Lane Aviation. spraying operation since 1948. Our fleet of multiple Air Tractors not only allows us to know how to best respond to ag operators’ needs, but it also helps us to understand what it means to be AOG. Lane Aviation works diligently to make sure our customers get their required parts as quickly as possible. Pratt & Whitney Canada

739 Booth

Driving innovation in agricultural aviation through reliability, engineering and proactive problem solving The continuous enhancement and untouchable performance record of Pratt & Whitney Canada’s renowned PT6A engine have made it the world’s most popular engine in its category. And when it comes to serving the ag industry the fact is nothing else compares. P&WC invented the reverse flow engine used on all PT6-powered aircraft, including its latest addition, the PT6A-140AG – an engine which sets the bar in the agricultural industry as the most powerful and reliable in its class. With over 23,000 PT6A engines in active service today, it has accumulated 90% more flight hours than any other in its segment: a total of close to 375 million hours, including well over 12 million and counting for PT6Apowered agricultural aircraft. The PT6A’s unrivalled record is one reason why it is the only engine to be granted singleengine Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) status for revenue passenger service in North America, Australia and New Zealand with Europe set to follow in early 2017. While passenger service isn’t a factor for agricultural operators, demonstrated reliability and performance most certainly are key aspects that substantially affect the bottom line – an engine not operating is an asset not generating revenue. When an aircraft has only one engine, there is no margin for error, so only a truly dependable powerplant can earn singleengine IFR status. “When it comes to demonstrating value and relevance to our customers, our efforts never cease,” says Edward Hoskin, the vice president of engine development programs at P&WC as well as a Cessna 172 pilot. “We are focused on providing a revolutionary turboprop alternative to engines powered by avgas at the smaller end of the power range, and advanced architectures driving step changes in fuel consumption and control systems at the high end. It is this perseverance and innovation that brought us to where we are today and will take us long into the future.” That same commitment to raising the bar is what drives P&WC’s efforts specific to the agricultural industry. A game-changer for extreme “hot and high” environments, the PT6A-140AG engine delivers 15% more power at 5% better specific fuel consumption (SFC). The engine was introduced on Air Tractor’s AT502XP. At 867 mechanical SHP and 1,075 thermodynamic SHP, the PT6A-140AG provides the highest takeoff and climb capability in the 500-gallon segment. And, with no mandatory warm-up or cool-down time requirements, the PT6A-140AG is ready to go to work whenever the operator is. The company’s relationship with agricultural operators goes well beyond the PT6A engine. P&WC is committed to working closely with customers to make their operations a success. When it comes to preventive maintenance, for example, P&WC is making step-change progress through its advanced diagnostics and prognostics solutions that provide nearreal-time situational awareness about engine health, usage and trends. P&WC’s turnkey FAST (Flight, Acquisition, Storage and Transmission) solution is installed on more than 600 P&WC-powered aircraft, downloading more than 120,000 files per month – providing critical data for deep analytics that are sent electronically to the customer within 15 minutes of landing. Today, two diagnostics trials are taking place on P&WC-powered Air Tractor aircraft in Australia and Canada, which will lead to a FAST solution trial in early next year followed by a FAST supplemental type certification (STC) expected in the second quarter of 2017.

38E

agairupdate.com

FAST wirelessly transmits a wide range of full-flight engine and aircraft parameters in a user-friendly format where and when customer needs it after each flight. Through the solution’s ability to provide rapid post-flight access to information via the Web, it can help eliminate costly unscheduled maintenance interventions. It is also allowing customers to move toward fully planned and predictive maintenance environments including oncondition maintenance programs; increasing availability, lowering costs and optimizing operations. “With thousands of PT6As flying in virtually every country in the world, we are laserfocused on continued enhancement of our services and support capabilities while delivering outstanding value and operating economics to our customers,” says Nicholas Kanellias, the senior director of general aviation programs at P&WC. “We are taking new approaches to modern avionics with our operators’ needs top of mind. We are reducing pilot workload and simplifying engine installation through the development of an integrated electronic engine and propeller control and a 2000+ SHP thermal engine for the next generation.” As proud as it is of the PT6A’s record, P&WC is firmly focused on the future. With thousands of PT6A engines flying all over the world, the company is dedicated to enhancing its services and support capabilities even further. P&WC’s innovative Oil Analysis Technology Program continues to build momentum as a next-generation on-wing monitoring solution for preventive maintenance. With already more than 2,600 engines enrolled in a customer trial since its launch earlier this year, the new technology has demonstrated in tests its potential to be hundreds of times more precise than the existing oil analysis methods in use. The highly sensitive technology detects minute particles within engine oil, providing early and precise exposure of the deterioration in oil-wetted components well before a potential event occurs. There’s still plenty more to come from P&WC. It’s this industry-advancing vision that has made the PT6A one of the most enduring engines in aviation history – and which ensures agricultural operators will keep receiving the outstanding value and operating economics they have come to expect. P&WC looks forward to meeting operators in person at the 2016 NAAA Convention. Attendees who are interested in meeting with P&WC representatives are invited to contact Yves Houde at Yves.Houde@pwc.ca.

Kawak Aviation Technologies – committed to customer success

Every business must respond to changing conditions within the industry be it regulatory, market, rising costs, competition, weather, or otherwise. The tendency in a lean year is to pull in your horns on capital investments and evaluate where you can cut costs. In truth, this is precisely the time you should be investing in technology and infrastructure to make your operation more efficient. Attempting to accomplish a higher level of efficiency exclusively through cost cutting seldom yields a positive result. The more predictable way to improve your efficiency is investing in better performing and more reliable equipment. The result is fewer headaches, higher productivity, increased profitability, a better job for your customer and…you get to show up at the job looking polished and professional rather than the Keystone Cops of the crop dusting business. While some growers tend to fixate on what is the cheapest, the successful ones focus on where their best value is. Cheaper seldom equates to being the best value as one generally gets what one pays for. The same can be said for the decisions you as the aerial applicator make in choosing and equipping an aircraft. A modern well outfitted and

maintained aircraft will be more efficient and ultimately profitable than those aircraft that are lagging behind in technology and performance. Better equipment will also produce a better application. By bringing good value to your customers you contribute to their success. How do you bring the best value to your customers? Similarly, when you make decisions regarding the companies that supply you with aircraft and equipment, you should be looking for those products and companies that bring the most value to your operation which in turn contributes to your success. Kawak’s mission over the last 23 years is simple. Contribute positively to our customer’s success and in turn they will contribute to Kawak’s success. Kawak provides solutions for ineffective and unreliable equipment, technological innovations for precision application, improvements in safety and pilot comfort, and exceptional customer support. Kawak products provide the technology to help build your businesses infrastructure for the future. What changing conditions do you have to adapt to this season or in preparation for next season?

Verifly NetGPS - The first fully networked GPS guidance system FliteTek International introduces the VeriFly GPS product line, including the NetGPS guidance system, NetOFFICE, powered by AgSync Air, and live aircraft tracking and diagnostics with NetTRACKER. The Verifly NetGPS guidance system, Net OFFICE and NetTRACKER together eliminate the need for manual file transfer from office to aircraft and make the task of application a simple four-step process. All you need to do is order, schedule, fly and complete an order. Less paperwork, no thumb drives, no miscommunication. A seamless system automatically sending the work so you don’t have to. The NetGPS technology enables wireless connectivity for sharing work orders, asset location, as-applied, and order completion information unlike any other system.

Pilots will appreciate the simplicity of the NetGPS guidance system from every angle; the first aerial guidance system designed around a removable tablet; the ease of installation, learning, and how easy it is to use. The system scales from providing basic field guidance, to importing fields via USB, connects easily to Dropbox and NetOFFICE to allow automated data flow between the aircraft and the back office. NetOFFICE, powered by AgSync Air, gives you all the power and ease for creating orders, scheduling, reviewing completion records, invoicing, and reporting. Getting orders to the NetGPS guidance system is as simple as selecting a pilot’s name. Gone are the days of emailing or using thumb drives to send files to the aircraft. Now

the system does it for you. Just select the order on the NetGPS guidance system and you are ready to fly! This not only saves you time but reduces almost any chance of a missed application. Once the order is finished, the guidance system automatically sends the customer text notification, completion records, and as-applied data back into NetOFFICE for review and invoicing. NetTRACKER gives you the power to monitor an aircraft’s real time position and as-applied coverage in the office. Increase safety, awareness, and operational efficiency by monitoring and seeing your pilot’s progress to know when the next load should be ready! After the work is completed, you have access to playback the entire flight path for future review.

Aviation Specialties Unlimited Flying NVG secures your future with expanded capabilities, safeguard your most valued asset—you An experienced owner-operator with more than 20 years of aerial application experience wakes before dawn to apply insecticide on a new customer’s soybean crop for the first time. The veteran operator surveyed the crop several days earlier, checks his Dynanav display regularly, and feels confident as he makes his first pass. He makes a tight turn and on approach he sees a dark spot in the crop that he hadn’t seen earlier—was it just a shadow or a farm implement?—his mind snaps into aerial decisionmaking mode and relents to his risk assessment by pulling back on the stick and retreating until after daylight. After losing a close friend in an aerial application accident, and seen the devastating loss shut down an entire operation and took a financial blow to an already grieving family, he conceded that he had made the right decision despite losing hours of operation. After returning to complete the job during daylight hours

and seeing the dark spot was just an undergrown patch, he still felt his earlier decision was sound. But, now recognized how the Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) that he’d seen at NAAA would have changed his assessment ensured his safety and extended his hours of operation. Bruce Hubler, President of Valley Air Services, has been flying three aircraft with NVGs for the past three ag seasons. “Flying on a very dark night, you can be more proficient in your turns, and get the same job done faster, burning less fuel than you can without flying NVGs. They basically paid for themselves during my first season flying with them,” said Hubler. ASU has had many questions about NVG flying for agriculture over the last five years and would like to invite you to a Q & A session at NAAA. You can bring your questions and hear from the agricultural operators

flying NVGs on the expanded capabilities and return on investment of Night Vision. They’ll share their firsthand experience from the pioneers of night vision for agricultural applications. Bruce Hubler of Valley Air Service, Larry Smith from Tri-Rotor Spray and Chemical, Bob Klein of Klein Flying Service, and Justin Watlington, director of operations for ASU will address your questions and concerns regarding NVG safety, applications, how you can expand your operations with your current assets, and, of course, grow your return on investment. About ASU—Aviation Specialties Unlimited (ASU), established in 1995 is a leading innovator in night vision imaging system design, manufacturing, installation, certification, sales, training and service. ASU safeguards the brave agricultural pilots that protect our nation’s crops with onsite training, aircraft modification, service, and support. Magnum approval achieved

Turbine Installation, LLC

Turbine Installation received final FAA STC approval for the installation of the Honeywell TPE331-14GR engine in the Air Tractor AT-802 airframe in June 2014 bringing AT-802 operators the ability to optimize the efficiency of this aircraft. This efficiency is coming in the form of lower fuel consumption, lower maintenance costs and the ability to haul a full hopper in all conditions. The prototype AT802-14 has been in service with the national S.E.A.T. program providing unparalleled performance in the 800-gallon class. With the addition of the second TPE331-14GR powered aircraft to the firefighting fleet it continues to prove the benefits and performance of this powerplant. All agricultural operators can realize the fuel efficiency, maintenance savings and higher hourly production this engine combination has to offer as well as our other Honeywell TPE331 engine installations. We would be glad to discuss all your options available if you would like to stop by our booth 541.

Reabe Aircraft Improvement

1055 Booth

In 1945 my father, Roy W, started Reabe Flying Service using J-3s and Stearmans modified to spray. I grew up in a world where making changes to aircraft to improve their usefulness was commonplace; longer wings, bigger hoppers, bigger engines, better spray systems. In 1979 my three brothers and I formed Reabe Spraying Service to specialize in our father’s crop spraying service. By then the ag industry had aircraft designed to do the job. But we were still making changes to the aircraft as we worked them and identified short-comings. We were using the Field Approval process to get the paperwork completed. Our FAA PMI (Principal Maintenance Inspector) suggested we get STCs to cover some of our work. In 1991 I started Reabe Aircraft Improvement as a hobby that specialized in creating STCs. This hobby has created six STCs, applicable to Air Tractor, Thrush, Bell Helicopter and Piper Twins. Each STC started as a shortcoming identified by our pilots, a fix created for our pilots, then tested and refined in our fleet. The final step is the STC process. Over the past 25 years, I have seen the STC process take four times longer and cost a boatload more to get through. But as I work around an aircraft I still see things I want to improve. I never thought my hobby would affect over 1000 aircraft. —Jeff Reabe, President, Reabe Aircraft Improvement

Air Repair

Booth

Exploring the Rx Gate System Come talk to AT-802 pilot/operator Kelly Peeler for straight, non salesman answers to your questions about the Rx Gate System.

Picture yourself flying your airplane across this prescription map with nine different rates including zero, never touching the dump handle, and having the material work out within a few hundred pounds. Now picture this in a 20 mph wind and having the system correct for the 40 mph swing in groundspeed. You may react by saying, “We don’t have any customers asking for dry prescription or ‘variable rate’ applications.” Our standard answer is you never will if you aren’t prepared. But, if you never do the first prescription job, you will always use this system to your benefit and your customer’s benefit by a constant rate application in any wind condition. Air Repair, Inc. customer base of units currently is about 70 operators that have made prescription application of dry material an integral part of their business. The Air Repair, Inc. Hydraulic Gate Control System interfaces with the industry leading Satloc G4 to provide instantaneous gate control on three levels. Level one is a gate positioner only, which opens the gate to a pilot selected setting and repeats that setting with no drift or holding your knee against the handle. This level runs with no GPS signal and can be used for small fields or free hand trim. Level two introduces GPS ground speed to correct 1/16” for every 5-mph change in groundspeed from the pilot selected base working speed of that aircraft. This gives you a constant rate of application with automatic gate movement regardless of wind or changes in groundspeed. The highest level, Level three, is run through a prescription map in the G4 that controls the gate movement for varying rates while also correcting for

Valley Air—Indianola, MS

Jerry Jones and David Miller

Third season with the Air Repair Rx Gate System on his 550 Thrush. Aircraft is using the standard 5” Transland gate and 22007 8-vane spreader easily achieving rates of 275 per acre or more. Operator, Jerry Jones, says, “I convinced my customer base to pool their spring potash prescription applications together for greater efficiency. A map was generated that covered 14,034 acres with 903 tons of potash at 8 different rates from 0-200 lbs per acre. Pilot David Miller has used this system since 2009 while flying a 602 Air Tractor for Betterfly in Indianola. David reports, ‘I flew the job over 63.58 hobb hours and 14 days which included some weather delays. Runs were 11 miles long with some runs requiring three 4000 lb loads. The material ran out on the next to last pass being off by only 1 ton on 903 tons. We use the system at the prescription level a lot but it works great in constant rate on every job. Passes are uniform upwind and downwind even on a 20 mph day giving the grower a better quality job. On top of that, your arm isn’t worn out at the end of the day.’ ”

TracMap Flight 3 now does split boom with autoboom TracMap’s latest Flight 3 GPS system continues the company’s reputation for a quality product that pilots love. The latest software update now allows aircraft to run automatic boom on/off (autoboom) on two boom sections. This means a helicopter or airplane can run a split boom and have each section turn off and on automatically as it crosses over previous coverage. All that is needed is to add an actuator valve to each boom section and wire that directly to the TracMap junction box. No other special hardware required. This is particularly useful in odd shaped blocks, as the TracMap unit will turn spray on/off, even when the previous coverage was flown using a different pattern. Other options recently added include —Being able to quickly flip between day mode and night mode. —Being able to add additional toggle switches as shortcut keys for all the common actions. —On Screen forms, to make it easy to capture information such as weather data. TracMap units have been proven to have the lowest annual cost of ownership. What do we mean by the lowest annual cost of ownership? Simple: • Take the purchase price • Add on all the annual service and repair costs as they occur over the years with other GPS Systems • Now divide the total by the number of years before you then replace it Whenever an operator has done this comparison exercise, TracMap always comes out on top - by a h uge margin!

Still Great Customer Service “We understand the pressure our customers are under to deliver in turn to their customers. It’s frustrating and costly when you can’t complete a job, so we are happy to be available when our customers need us to get the solution they need, fast” says Sales Manager Mark Hornback. We are often getting feedback from people saying how much they love their TracMap system and the support they get, some examples: TracMap is by far the best agricultural/forestry GPS I have ever used. I have used almost all of the other systems out there and TracMap is way ahead of the pack on so many levels. Apex Helicopters was the first to start using the system in Canada 10 years ago and I would never go back to another system ever again. Their tech support is out of this world awesome. They always answer the phone. I have even gotten Colin out of bed halfway around the world. I have never had an issue that they haven’t been able to help me with. We have six helicopters now and they will always have a TracMap system installed. Good job guys! Look forward to dealing with you in the next 10 years. Chris Vankoughnett , Chief Pilot/Owner Apex Helicopters Inc. , Wingham, Ontario I was apprehensive to switch from our previous systems to a TracMap but after flying it, I was hooked. The speed, the map, the ability to hand the customer a file that he can look at on Google Earth®, makes the system invaluable when it comes to pilot usability and customer relations! The true selling point for us has been the awesome support TracMap offers. TracMap is always seeking feedback from the application industry in order to ensure they are offering the best product and service possible, and I personally love knowing that the answer to any question I have is a phone call or email away. Bart Alexander Chem-Air, Shreveport, LA We made the switch to TracMap and never looked back. The unit has all of the features we need without all of the bulk and complexity of other systems. Installation costs were low, and customer service and reliability has been outstanding. JP Libert Agri-Copters, Dos Palos, CA I was not too sure, as I don’t like to change from what I already know, but it’s straightforward and uncomplicated, which is great. The guidance patterns are easy to use and it works every time I turn it on. Some of us older guys don’t like new electronics, but the simplicity and durability of the TracMap system is awesome! Twenty stops Bettendorf. Great Falls. Denver. Dover. Corpus Christi. Little Rock. Lake Charles. Cape Girardeau. Long Beach. Those aren’t the only ones; places we’ve visited. Exhibits set up and then removed 48-72 hours later. This is our November through February life; the constant in-and-out of airports, truck stops and untold thousands of miles. And I gotta tell you folks: I wouldn’t change one second of it. One night during the AMAA in Great Falls, Ms. Brenda Watts pointed out our unique winter months, filled with constant travel. The suggestion was an article in the NAAA magazine, shedding some light on what some operators may be curious about: how we vendors spend our “slow time” and why we do it. Well, it’s pretty straightforward. We travel to these meetings because we like to. We like the people. The places. Seeing friends we sometimes

can’t see any other way. In short, we do it because we love it. Yes, there’s catching red-eye flights because the only other flight was the day before and we don’t want to cut short our time at the meetings. But there are the dinners and auctions and hospitality hours that make it all worthwhile. We’re on the road November through February. We make almost every single meeting. And while I prefer to fly; my father, Bill, well, he prefers to drive. I can’t quite convince him to give up lugging around 300 pounds of cast iron and electric motor. His reason? He wants to be sure that anyone who wants to see one of our quick loading units in person has the chance to do so. Bill wants to make sure you all have the chance to “put your hands on it.” And maybe he’s right. After all, most of us don’t choose to spend our days in a truck driving from Memphis to Coeur d’Alene or

Sacramento. And yet, my old man does it. November through February. I spoke with an operator after the Mid States convention in November of 2015 and he mentioned something I hadn’t really thought about. He mentioned one of our competitors was 20 minutes down the road, and yet, despite several invitations, never showed up. I won’t mention them by name, because, hey, this is my soapbox! I can’t recall his exact words, but it amounted to this: you guys (Pickett) show up. You bring all the goodies. You support us, so we support you. Your competition may be closer, but why don’t they come to the meetings? I don’t have an answer to that question. All I can tell you is, while it involves a revolving door of one airport to the next, one rental car and one hotel after the other, we love it. We make the effort because it’s worth it to us. Supporting aerial applicators and the industry is what we do. Not just November through February, but year round. Thank you for your business and stay safe out there, fellas.—Bailey Everett

Past, present & future of aerial application Exploring the industry’s past, present and future, featuring futurist Bob Treadway and the debut of NAAA’s 50th Anniversary documentary Join NAAA and convention attendees on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at the General Session in Long Beach to enjoy a review of the past 50 years of NAAA and the aerial application industry. NAAA has been hard at work on exploring NAAA’s history and developing an entertaining and informative video of our past five decades. We’ll debut the video at the General Session and you’ll also hear from NAAA past presidents and industry leaders on NAAA’s origins, successes and future. In advance of the documentary, NAAA has produced a series of 50th anniversary “flashback” segments that highlight key moments from NAAA’s history. For our first flashback, NAAA’s inaugural president, Dick Reade, explains how it all began. During part two of the General Session, you’ll hear much more about the future from futurist Bob Treadway. According to the U.N., world population will increase from 7.2 billion today to 8.1 billion in 2025. This, coupled with significant growth in the middle class, which is 2 billion today and expected to grow to 4.9 billion by 2030, supports longer term gains in world food demand, global agricultural trade and U.S. agricultural exports.

The growing world population will need to be fed and ag pilots play a large role in that. Bob will explore the future of the agricultural industry. Bob Treadway’s work as a futurist has helped different industries develop long-range thinking, forecast the environments of tomorrow, form robust strategy, and take action on what’s ahead. His broad perspective comes through work with hundreds of clients in a broad range of industries and fields including agriculture, telecommunications, technology, manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare and energy. Bob has worked with many Fortune 500 companies, as well as other associations, such as Berkshire Hathaway, Motorola, Gillette, ExxonMobil, Hilton, American

Express, the National Corn Growers Association, Dow, Humana, United Airlines, and the National League of Cities to help develop long-range thinking, forecast the environments of tomorrow, form robust strategy, and take action on what’s ahead. He’s also known for some of the highest-rated leadership development educational sessions in financial services, agriculture, information security, and food production and processing. Covington Aircraft Engines

Covington Aircraft’s Tunica, Mississippi division expands, again! Since 1972, Covington Aircraft has worked very hard maintaining their four core values of integrity, dependability, affordability and quality service. Quality service is one attribute that Covington is constantly monitoring and has always taken very serious. Aaron Abbott, Covington’s Executive Vice President, says,“Just because we think we’re serving the customers’ needs doesn’t always make it true. We depend on our customers to tell us whether we’re making the grade or not. As we’ve traveled to the many AG shows, a repeated comment has surfaced over the last few years. ‘We wish you were more accessible and closer to us along the Mississippi River Delta.’ ” In response to the requests of our customers, in 2012 Covington Aircraft opened a facility in Tunica, MS. This was done so that ag operators in the Delta could have

the same dependable Covington service closer to home. Over the past four years, Covington has been able to respond quickly to the needs of their customers limiting downtime. Because of the success and the growing demand on this facility, Covington’s Tunica facility has expanded once again. Recently they have moved into a 5000 square foot shop space to go along with their 20,000 square foot hangar; all located at the Tunica, Mississippi airport. By adding balancing equipment, lathes, and enhanced NDT capabilities in the new shop space, Covington Tunica is able to perform complete hot sections and power sections on-site. “Our intentions in Tunica are to support our customers with rental power sections, engines and props,” says Luke Abbott, Covington Aircraft Engines President and Operations Manager of the Tunica location. “Whether a job requires the use of our airborne Mobile Response

Team, one of our Mobile Response Team trucks, or our Tunica fly-in facility, we are only minutes away from supporting a customer that needs assistance. We also inventory the accessories, parts and products that our customers need. Whether you fly into our Tunica facility or we come to yours, you will be able to depend on our Tunica crew and you can expect the same great service you have received from Covington Aircraft over the past 40 years. We are serious about working and living here in the Delta, close to our customers.” The Tunica location is capable of taking care of your needs whether it’s an older PT6A-20 or the new PT6A140AG or even a radial engine. With Covington’s extensive rental pool, Pratt & Whitney Canada warranty support, and new or overhauled parts and engines; Covington is proud to be a part of what’s going on in the Mississippi Delta. SATLOC

Satloc launches the IntelliFlow2 application controller

Booth

Satloc is pleased to announce at NAAA its launch of the IntelliFlow2 application controller. IntelliFlow2 replaces the current IntelliFlow that has served the agricultural aviation market for over 10 years as an accurate and reliable flow control system. IntelliFlow2 has a number of noticeable advancements including a much smaller size than its predecessor and a more robust enclosure capable of better withstanding the harsh environment of an agricultural aircraft. An industry first, IntelliFlow2 has the capability to control both liquid and dry gate systems using a single ECU, enabling pilots to switch between liquid and dry with the press of a button. One less controller box means one less thing to worry about breaking down, minimizing the potential for down time. Since IntelliFlow2 is integrated with the G4, all functions can be accessed from within the user interface alleviating the need for a second display in the cockpit. Satloc is working with industry leading dry gate providers on interfacing to their systems.

Stop by booth 947 and meet Satloc’s newest team members

Additional IntelliFlow2 features include an option to interface with a pressure transducer to display boom pressure on the G4 display. Pilots can also bump the rate up or down in small increments utilizing a mechanical switch and have those rate adjustments apply for the remaining portion of the field including prescription maps. IntelliFlow2 will first be integrated with G4. Bantam integration is currently underway.

LiteStar IV LiteStar IV, Satloc’s new entry-level guidance system and the successor to LiteStar III, was launched in June at Congresso SINDAG in Botucatu, Brazil. Using the L7 lightbar as a display, the pilot has four customizable displays. LiteStar IV includes an easy-to-use, four button controller as the pilot’s interface. LiteStar IV enables the pilot to log data and transfer that data to a USB drive so it can be used in MapStar or other third party systems capable of reading the Satloc log file format.

7-Inch display Satloc is releasing a new 7 inch display to replace the Type 3 display. The new display is much brighter than

the current and includes optical bonding to reduce glare from sunlight. The new display will have the same hole patterns and cabling as the Type 3 for an easy transition away from the current display.

Satloc file formats In 2016, Satloc has worked with a number of third-party companies who specialize in software information systems. These companies have requested the ability to read Satloc log files or be able to send information such as job files to a G4. Contact your software provider to find out if they have implemented this functionality. Stop by booth 947 and meet Satloc’s newest team members Zach Jenkins and Lizzie Crider.
