FROM THE COCKPIT
Bill Lavender bill@agairupdate.com
C-PAASS — A Good Thing I remember when the concept of PAASS was introduced to the ag aviation industry in the mid-1990s. At the time, I served as the NAAA representative for the Georgia AAA and was a member of the Steering Committee for the implementation of PAASS. I remember all too well the backlash I received on the back of a transit bus at the NAAA annual convention. Several prominent operators cornered me on that bus with no fellow Steering Committee members to come to my defense. I tried explaining that PAASS would be a win-win move for the industry. Those operators were not going to hear it. They had all sorts of apprehensions. At the time, I did not convince anyone on that bus of the value of PAASS, but I did buy some time. Since then, those same operators, of which I remember two specifically, came to endorse and become very active in the success of PAASS, much to their credit. Today, things are very different as far as PAASS’s credibility. It is the premier ag aviation education program. It may be tested with the introduction of C-PAASS, but I don’t think so. If, for some reason, this is the first you have heard of C-PAASS, it is an expansion of PAASS that offers certification. To quote Andrew Moore, CEO of NAAA, “The certification program will acknowledge participants who make themselves available to the rich educational material provided by NAAA and the state/regional ag aviation associations through membership and who attend PAASS annually and Operation S.A.F.E. biannually.” Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with a certification program, there is no doubt it will serve to demonstrate an operator’s professionalism. That is a valuable tool when one’s actions come into question. People have this desire to live in a utopian society. Of course, that is not possible. However, just an operator raising the bar with his notable efforts by participating in C-PAASS will go a long way towards his credibility and professionalism. A 6 | agairupdate.com
I will not go into details about NAAA’s C-PAASS program to be implemented in 2023. The Association can far better explain it than I. Visit agaviation.org to learn more. It will unquestionably benefit the ag-pilot and operator. There is a significant possibility that ag-aviation insurance companies, along with chemical company registrants, could offer cost-saving discounts for participants in C-PAASS, as in the past. As I write this, I am three days before my departure to Brazil. I have made two trips earlier in the past nine months. This trip will include attending their national convention hosted by SINDAG, the equivalent to our NAAA. The convention is expected to be well attended with well over 100 exhibitors since they have missed the last two years due to covid. This will be my 28th year traveling to Brazil for AgAir Update. Oddly enough, I have yet to learn the Portuguese language! But, I manage with help from incountry AgAir Update team members. After the convention, I will visit various operators for future articles throughout Brazil. The entire trip will last about 13 days. Once I return home, I will settle back into semi-retirement, helping Graham. Honestly, I do not see how I got everything done while running things at AgAir Update. I cannot get everything done now while supposedly semi-retired! Until next month, Keep Turning…

Missing Piece by Graham Lavender
Ag pilot training is one of the most unique types of aviation training. There are many ways to do it; some good, some notso-good. For many years, the on-wing checkout and the “go out there and fly the thing” seemed commonplace. However, as regulations change and airplanes become bigger and faster, more and more new pilots are turning to a disciplined training program that considers faster airplanes, obstacle avoidance at high speeds, emergencies and turbine engine operation. Simulators have also made their debut into ag aviation training, providing valuable training for turbine engine management, including starts and emergencies. They allow for training in situations that are impossible to train for in
real aircraft - inadvertent IMC, catastrophic component failures - just to name a few. A newcomer to the training sector in agricultural aviation aims to put the missing piece into the puzzle - the jump from the simulator (or slower aircraft) to the faster, larger turbine powered aircraft.
Griff Malleck grew up on a farm in Indianola, Nebraska, where his dad, grandfather and great grandfather were all successful farmers. Griff says his father did not want him to be a farmer because of all the stress of farm life. Since his dad loved planes and his uncle flew for a living, becoming an airplane mechanic seemed the best choice. Griff started flying at age 16 and got his pilot’s license a year later. He married his high school sweetheart Vickie and they moved to Broomfield, Colorado, so he could attend school to become an airplane mechanic. formed Red Willow Chemical. In 2003, the company outgrew its location at the McCook Ben Nelson Regional Airport and moved into its current, expanded location just off the airport.
Griff purchased Red Willow Aviation in 1980, and at the time, operated it as a maintenance repair shop and aerial application business with a 400 Brave and Cessna C-188. He knew he had to continue doing new things to stay competitive, so throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he tried many new ideas and eventually got into the bulk sales chemical business and
Griff credits Vickie, his wife, for much of their success at Red Willow Chemical. Vickie worked full-time to provide for the family and make sure bills were paid during the early years when Griff was just starting as owner of the company. Griff says that even though she never actually worked at Red Willow Aviation, Vickie was integral to its success. ➤

Cleo says, “Honestly, without our great employees and their dedication, we wouldn’t be doing as well.” Red Willow Aviation purchased an AT-504 out of Texas to fill the gap often created between a pilot transitioning into a larger turbine aircraft. Their unique program utilizes a minimum of five hours of flight time in the aircraft with an experienced Air Tractor pilot, covering all the basics of aircraft and spraying operations. However, one aspect of the program makes those five hours extremely effective - simulation. In partnership with Turbine Training Center in Manhattan, KS, all students enrolled in the Red Willow Aviation program must complete the aircraft familiarization/simulation course with Turbine Training Center before they get into the aircraft. This saves valuable time and the student comes ready to learn aerial application techniques instead of emergency procedures and starts; after all, that’s what the simulator is for. “Our goal is to help the industry produce competent, welltrained pilots and increase overall industry safety and the combination of aircraft-specific simulation and flight-time is a recipe for success,” comments Cleo.

By Ted Delanghe I thought I had unofficially retired from the ag flying business, but then came across a deal too good to miss. Flying a Turbo Brave from an unbelievably smooth 4500x50 foot airstrip with a maximum of 7 miles ferry. Not to mention fields situated amid the Saskatchewan prairies so flat that an anthill is considered a flight hazard. I would also be flying with a newcomer to the ag aviation business. Jeremy had just finished an excellent ag pilot course and would be flying a 235 hp Pawnee, and I was quite interested to learn his perspective on the ag aviation business. His start in the business was a far cry from when I started, where the owners said: "The airplane is around the corner of the hangar. Let me know when you are ready to start work." No ag course, no ground school, and no experience in ag flying. As you can imagine – and I bet a lot of you can relate to the experience - the learning curve was very steep. I had flown the Turbo Brave for the owners a couple of years before last year's worst drought in 20 years, which effectively grounded a large portion of ag flying in our central Canadian prairie's location. The owners were wholly supportive and onside, with a primary focus on flight safety and safety in general. On the ground, in the air, and everywhere in between. I was very interested to find out what questions Jeremy would have as a newcomer to the business. For starters, what size of load do you take? There's not a short answer to that question as it's a function of aircraft type and hopper size, temperature, humidity, pilot expertise, length and A 16 | agairupdate.com

condition of runway, wind, not to mention the subjective items like size and nature of the infestation, or incoming weather that might put applications on hold. I was also very interested in seeing how much rust I had accumulated after a year out of ag flying. With any farming machine – swather, combine, tractor or aircraft – getting back in the saddle requires a short relearning period to get the reflexes back into good working order. It takes a bit of time at the controls to groove the brain, eyes, hands, and feet into working together in a smooth, well-oiled coordinated effort. Luckily, Jeremy and I had lots of time to prep for the upcoming season. We met at the strip for a first meeting and hit the books on our respective aircraft. It's incredible how much one can forget even over a short time. Max allowable engine limits, normal operating procedures, emergency procedures, and even the items to check on a walkaround. Where are those darn fuel drains? What are the recommended tire pressures? What are the limits on brake wear? As many pilots have said: "My memory is good, just a little short." Another reason one goes out before the season is to find out things that need fixing before the action begins. In terms of the Turbo Brave, all was in excellent working order, except for one not-so-small item. The touch screen on the GPS guidance system was not responding at all. I spent a bit of time cleaning the screen, looking through the User's Guide, and doing everything I thought would cure the problem, but unfortunately, all were dead ends. ➤

It was time to bring in the GPS experts who were just a phone call away. I explained the issue and was ready with paper and pen to copy down a long series of steps to cure the problem, but that was not required. It was a simple matter of recalibrating the touchscreen by plugging a mouse into the USB port at the lower back area of the cockpit wall behind the seat, something I had not been aware of. Simple fixes are good. One of Jeremy's first questions was what maximum load he should take. I went through the items mentioned above but just summarized it by saying, fly with the load you feel comfortable with. That will undoubtedly rise as you gain more experience in type and how the aircraft handles a load under different weather and field conditions. Just don't be in a rush! Another interesting question Jeremy asked was what type of feedback can you feel in the aircraft controls when flying slow with a max load. It's not something that is covered thoroughly in the Operating Manual. On some aircraft, you can get a lot of stick 'chatter' as you enter slow flight from the turbulent airflow hitting the elevator. I found the Cessna 188 particularly sensitive in this area and really 'talked to you' airborne as you entered slow flight. On others, there is
more of a heavy buffet before the stall. The only way to know for sure is to take the aircraft to a safe altitude, practice slow flight, and go through a complete stall sequence with various flap and load settings, both of which Jeremy and I did on checkout day. Also, as though we had requested it, the weather started calm and clear, with almost ideal conditions for ag applications. However, as noon approached, the clouds began to build, and the wind started to pick up. The question naturally arises: "When do you stop flying for weather?" Is there a magic windspeed number when everyone should just shut down? That would certainly make life easier, but unfortunately or otherwise, the answer is it's a judgment call. Are there neighboring susceptible crops, or is the adjacent field the next on your list? How bad is the insect infestation, and if left another 24 hours without treatment, will the crop be a total loss? I did share with Jeremy a rule I learned from a seasoned pro early in my ag pilot career. Before any flight, ask yourself two questions. Will it be safe, and will it be effective? If the answer to both is not an immediate and emphatic "Yes!", it's time to shut down, grab that second cup of coffee, and wait for more optimum conditions.

Field Air Presents SwathPRO® Spray System at AAAA Convention Air Tractor® dealer Field Air will hosted Jeff Hemeyer, CapstanAG National Account Sales Manager during the Aerial Application Association of Australia (AAAA) convention July 19-21 at the Oaks Cypress Resort in Hunter Valley, Australia. Also attending the event in the Field Air booth was Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch. “We were excited to introduce the SwathPRO spray boom system to Australian aerial applicators,” Hirsch says. “This innovative technology allows aerial applicators to adjust swath width and flow rate on the fly. It’s a way for operators to better mitigate drift, increase deposition accuracy and improve overall productivity,” he adds. A SwathPRO informational seminar was also held Wednesday, 20 July in the Venusta Centre at which Hemeyer provided an overview of the SwathPRO spray boom system

and discussed its features and benefits. Developed by Topeka, Kansas-based CapstanAG Systems, the SwathPRO system provides a level of control and versatility not possible with conventional spray boom systems. It will be distributed exclusively through Air Tractor’s worldwide dealer network and installed at the Air Tractor factory and Air Tractor dealers’ operations. Hemeyer says the SwathPRO system allows ag pilots to alter swath width and flow rate while in flight with pre-programmed settings that turn on or off individual nozzles and adjust spray boom pressure. He notes the system has been field tested for 3 years across more than 687,000 hectares (1.7 million acres) with Air Tractor AT-802A and AT-502B operators in the United States. Systems will be available for all Air Tractor ag aircraft models.

Air Tractor Aims for Record Aircraft Production in 2022 Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch anticipates that Air Tractor will produce more airplanes than last year despite supply chain disruptions. “At the midpoint of 2022, we are on track with our aircraft production goals. The Texas-based agriculture and aerial firefighting aircraft manufacturer produced 173 airplanes in 2021. As of June 2022, Air Tractor has produced 99 planes, and Hirsch said the company has plans to build a record 194 airplanes by yearend. Of this annual production total, the trend continues for more Air Tractor aircraft to be delivered to South America. Jeff Dobbs, Air Tractor Customer Service Manager, added that parts deliveries also continue growing. “Parts orders to South America remain strong as the South American Air Tractor fleet continues to grow. In 2021 we shipped more than 438,000 Air Tractor parts to operators worldwide,” he said. “In the first half of 2022, we have already shipped over 232,000 parts. I anticipate by the end of 2022, we will have delivered more than half a million parts worldwide.
Operational Excellence Air Tractor continues its transformative efforts toward operational excellence. This mission places a strong focus on making the best possible use of their resources and improving overall competitiveness. The effort involves continuous improvement, striving for simplicity, eliminating time-wasting activities, and increasing the company’s manufacturing flexibility to streamline the flow of raw materials and subassemblies through the factory.

Covington Aircraft Celebrates 50 Years Since 1972, Covington Aircraft has been a leader in aircraft engine repair. Join us as we look back over this long and storied history.
For a half-century, Covington Aircraft has provided the aviation industry with exceptional engine repair, maintenance, and overhaul services. This 50th anniversary is a milestone that not many companies reach and one that we are thrilled to celebrate with our entire Covington Aircraft family. While Covington Aircraft is renowned as one of today's leaders in aircraft engine repair, our beginnings five decades ago were as humble as they come. After graduating from Letourneau University in Longview with a degree in Aviation Technology, Paul Abbott packed up his belongings and moved to Okmulgee, Oklahoma, with his wife, Betty. Paul took a job with a small mission organization; missionary work had always been Paul and Betty's passion. To keep the bills paid, Paul also found employment at the Okmulgee airport, where he fueled planes, mowed the grass, and attended to other odd jobs. A 26 | agairupdate.com
At the same time, a man named Bob Covington was opening a new radial engine overhaul facility at the airport where Paul worked. In 1972, with his work at the mission organization winding down, Paul decided to join Bob Covington and work at this new facility. The partnership that would guide Covington Aircraft to extraordinary new heights was formed. For several months, Covington Aircraft operated without making a single sale. At first, there were serious questions about whether the company would succeed. After countless prayers and an equal amount of hard work, though, Covington Aircraft finally sold its first engine overhaul. With the ball rolling and sales coming in, Paul and Bob's efforts began to pay off. Three years later, in 1975, Paul and Betty joined the company as part-owners. However, they both still felt a strong calling to the mission field. Through prayer and wise counsel, the two finally decided to use the opportunity God had given them to support other missionaries rather than working in the field themselves. Through thick and thin, Paul and Betty have honored this commitment, supporting missionaries worldwide even when money was tight. ➤

When Bob Covington left the company in the late 1970s to teach at a Bible school in Alabama, Paul and Betty Abbott became the firm's sole owners. Their desire was to build a company that would allow them to support more and more missionaries while at the same time providing their customers with reliable, compassionate, and truly personal service. To reach these goals, Paul and Betty established four company values for Covington Aircraft that have guided the business ever since: Integrity - Paul and Betty Abbott decided that they would never compromise their integrity or the integrity of their company for the sake of profits. Today, Covington Aircraft still strives to always deliver on its promises, do the right thing for its customers and employees, and set a Christ-like example in the business world. Dependability - In the aviation industry, dependability is a matter of life and death. To Covington Aircraft, nothing is more important than ensuring that pilots reliant on Covington Aircraft engines make it home safely to their families. The A 28 | agairupdate.com
company goes to extraordinary lengths to guarantee the safety and reliability of its products. Affordability - While Covington Aircraft never cuts corners to save money, the company is searching for ways to reduce costs without sacrificing its high standards and is happy to pass these savings on to its customers. Quality Service - Since the beginning, Covington Aircraft has been committed to treating its customers like family. Today, quality personalized service remains a cornerstone of the Covington Aircraft mission. For the past fifty years, these four values have enabled Covington Aircraft to earn a reputation as the industry's leading provider of aircraft engine repair, maintenance, and overhaul services. Since 2010, Covington Aircraft has served as a Designated Overhaul Facility (DOF) for PT6A engines and helped overhaul thousands of these engines. With half of a century now in the books, the entire Covington Aircraft family invites you to join us as we look forward to what the next fifty years hold in store.

Follow NAAA’s Shooting-Response Checklist in the Event of an Ag Aircraft Shooting Ag planes have been struck by gunfire during flight operations on at least two occasions this season. In May, a Texas operator escaped injury after his plane was hit by a bullet sometime during a routine corn application. In July, an Air Tractor AT-802 was shot twice while an ag pilot was finishing a fungicide application in Missouri. Thankfully neither pilot was harmed in the incidents. After spraying a cornfield on the morning of May 7, Dennis Whitlock of Whitlock Air Service in Bonham, Texas, returned to Jones Field Airport to refuel and prepare for his next job. As he was about to fuel up, he noticed a hole on the side of the cowling surrounding the engine of his PA-36-400 Piper Brave. Whitlock opened the cowling to discover that the bullet had ripped through a scat hose that feeds air to the oil cooler and then hit an air intake tube, which deflected the bullet. If the bullet had taken a slightly different path and penetrated the Brave’s fuel injection system, it would have shut the airplane down. Likewise, if it had penetrated the crankcase, the plane would have lost oil and shut down. Two months later, on July 10, ag pilot Adam Towe was three passes into the second to last field of his day when he heard a loud pop as he was banking to turn back into a field of beans. He had just flown over a set of trees, so his initial thought was he had hit something, possibly a dead branch. In reality, the AT-802 had sustained two bullet holes, which he discovered after returning to the airport. One bullet hit one of the aircraft’s wings and another pierced the spinner surrounding the turboprop.
In both cases, the aerial applicators followed instructions in NAAA’s shooting-response checklist to report the shootings to the authorities and the FAA. NAAA developed the checklist of actions operators and pilots can take in such instances after a series of ag aircraft shootings in the summer of 2017. Whitlock followed the checklist’s suggestions and began by contacting the local Sheriff’s Office, which opened an investigation. He also contacted the FAA’s FSDO regional operation center in Fort Worth and spoke with his local FSDO office about the shooting incident. Towe gave statements about the shooting to the local authorities and the FBI after alerting the bureau and the sheriffs’ offices in Ray County and Caldwell County, Missouri. He and the operator he was flying for also notified the FSDOs in Kansas City, Missouri, and Little Rock, Arkansas, to inform the FAA. Shooting at an ag aircraft is a provocative and potentially deadly act that requires swift action. NAAA’s checklist includes tips on how to report a shooting incident and spread the word so the perpetrator can be brought to justice. It is important for the public to realize how dangerous these careless acts are and to ensure there are repercussions for anyone who shoots at an ag aircraft. “If it happens to you, follow the checklist. Let’s stop this stuff,” Towe said. See page B2 for a checklist that you can cut out and post at your operation. ➤

Checklist for Pilots Subjected to Discharge of a Firearm Targeting an Ag Aircraft If someone discharges a firearm at your aircraft, NAAA recommends taking these steps. 1. Inform Local Law Enforcement While the laws vary from state to state, you should immediately report to your local law enforcement agency that someone has shot at your aircraft, even if your aircraft is not hit. Depending on the state, an individual discharging a firearm at an aircraft could be charged with anything from the negligent discharge of a firearm to attempted murder. It is important to contact the enforcement body with jurisdiction over the locality where the offense occurred. The sooner you can contact law enforcement, the better the chance of apprehending the shooter.
used as data to contribute to aviation safety. The incident information can be recorded on the General Report Form for electronic submission, or the form can be printed for completion and mailing by U.S. mail. The General Report Form is available at asrs.arc.nasa.gov/report/electronic.html. 6. Tell Other Pilots Whether it’s through social media, message boards, email or word of mouth, let other pilots in your area know when and where the incident occurred. Highlighting your experience can help other pilots maintain extra situational awareness when flying in the area.
2. Contact the FBI 7. Notify Local News Media Be sure to file a report with the FBI regional office for your area. The contact information for the regional office is available at fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices. In addition to state laws, it is a federal crime to shoot at aircraft, including UAVs. Penalties can be as severe as 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Even the threat of shooting down an aircraft can get you five years in prison.
Share your encounter and safety concerns with the local media to inform the non-piloting public of these same concerns, as well as the penalties associated with willfully shooting at an aircraft. Getting your story out could help catch the perpetrator if the suspected shooter has not been apprehended and might make someone else think twice before discharging a firearm at an aircraft.
3. Report it to the FAA National Safety Hotline 8. Contact Your Insurance Agent if ... After safely landing, you should report the incident by calling the FAA Safety Hotline at 1-800-255-1111 or online at hotline.faa.gov. This contact is a single avenue for anyone from FAA employees to concerned citizens to file a report regarding violations of federal aviation regulations or the safety of the national airspace. 4. Call your Local Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) Your local Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) consists of aviation officials who are your local contact to the FAA. While local law enforcement and the FBI take care of criminal matters, be sure your local FSDO is given details on the incident.
In the event physical damage is done to your aircraft, contact your insurance agent. The company will ensure repairs are made to the aircraft in accordance with your policy. There is a possibility the insurance company could pursue action against the parties that may be liable for the loss. NAAA’s shooting-response checklist also is available to print and display at tiny.cc/NAAAchecklist. In addition to the shooting-response checklist, NAAA is available to offer additional assistance in the event of an ag aircraft shooting incident. Contact NAAA at (202) 546-5722 for further support.
5. File a NASA Aviation Safety Report NAAA, Working for You The primary purpose of a NASA aviation safety report is to collect data related to the national airspace to reduce aviation accidents and incidents. Your confidential and non-punitive report will go directly into the Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS), ensuring your experience will be

CRAYMER’S COUNSEL
Robert Craymer - robertc@covingtonaircraft.com
Inlet Case I have fielded a few calls over the past couple of weeks about oil coming out of the inlet case after motoring the engine. The presence of oil caused concern for the customers. The best way to show what is going on is to explore the oil tank and what is causing this. We previously discussed the PT6A engine construction and the modular design. We began our look at the engine from the Accessory Gear Box (AGB) at the rear of the engine. The inlet case happens to be the next thing in line. The inlet case serves several purposes. It directs air into the compressor; in addition, the inlet case is the support for the #1 bearing, which is the thrust bearing for the compressor. It provides placement for the inlet screen, which prevents objects from entering the compressor. It supports the AGB and forms the oil tank. The inlet case is an essential part of the engine design and performs many functions. When you look at the inlet case shape, imagine the airflow, and you can see the brilliance of the design. The air provided to the engine nacelle is brought in through the ¼” screen and makes a sharp reverse turn. This keeps the compressor rotor from being in line with the flight path and airflow. This allows for a layer of protection after the screen for objects to find their way into the compressor. Gravity will allow the objects to be pulled away from the airflow through the turn. This design also helps reduce the noise of the engine during operation. Not all debris can be stopped by this design. From time to time, we still find FOD (Foreign Object Damage) on the compressor blades. However, much of it is repairable. When the AGB is installed, the internal cavity formed with the inlet case becomes the oil tank. The bulk of the oil is stored there. The oil begins circulating through the pressure pump in the oil tank into the oil filter housing. The oil goes through the outside of the filter to the inside and is B 10 | agairupdate.com
Inlet case.
distributed to the engine when the engine is running. Not all the oil is kept in the oil tank. There is some level of oil in the Reduction Gear Box, Fuel to Oil Heater, AGB, and airframe oil cooler. The dipstick is, of course, located on the back of the AGB, but the dipstick is angled and long enough to reach the tank. This is the oil level that one is measuring. Some engine models also have a sight glass to look at the oil level. ➤
UNITED STATES
The other thing the inlet case does is support the thrust bearing for the compressor. The bearing is inside a housing bolted to the inlet case. There is also an oil jet providing pressure oil direct to the bearing. The design of the PT6 incorporates several air seals, and there is one in this location. The air seal has a rotating and stationary component that provides minimal clearance when the engine operates. Air pressure is found on one side of the seal and oil on the other. That air keeps the oil contained inside the engine. Now to address the original concern about oil coming out of the inlet case. This typically occurs when the engine has been motored without starting. For instance, when you are performing an engine wash. You motor the engine with the starter (fuel off), so the compressor is spinning, then add soap and/or water to perform the type of wash you are doing. This operation does allow all the systems to begin their normal operation. The pressure oil is sent from the tank to the bearings, so they are lubricated for the engine start. Because the engine is not being started, only rotated, the scavenge pumps cannot move all the oil provided. The #1 bearing cavity floods with oil, and because the engine is not operating, there is no air pressure to keep the oil from bypassing the air seal. This allows oil to come out of the inlet. It also prompts a quick call to your favorite engine guy to ask if it is ok.

Contaminated Inlet Screen.
What do you do when you see oil out of the inlet? Finish what you are doing (engine wash or whatever caused you to motor the engine). Clean the oil out of the inlet the best you can. If it dripped all over your air filter, you may also want to clean it. The point is to limit the amount of oil ingested by the engine. Oil on the compressor blades attracts chemicals, dirt, dust, and grime. Once everything is clean, start the engine and watch for an oil pressure indication. Run the engine as needed, dry it out after washing and get the oil up to temperature. After shutdown, check the oil within 15 minutes. Adjust the oil level as needed. You won’t need to add unless you were already down a little bit. The tricky thing about turbine oil is that you can spill a teaspoon on the floor, and it will spread out forever and look like you spilled a gallon. Here is where I give my standard warning: don’t overfill the tank. If you do, the engine will push out what it doesn’t want or need. B 12 | agairupdate.com
Here is my best advice. If you have a question or concern, then call and ask someone about it. I always field questions to help folks operate and understand their engines. I would love to help you avoid costly problems and put your mind at rest when something abnormal shows up. I hope everyone is having a great season. REGINA’S PERSPECTIVE
Regina Farmer regina.farmer@chem-man.com
Duplicating Information
Let the program give you a good template for comparison just in case you get distracted (as we all do) and make a mistake.
After being in the industry for thirty years, I've seen just about every scenario of company workflow. One thing that became abundantly clear was that there was a lot of duplication of data entry in our industry. This was concerning to me not only because of the inefficient use of time but also due to the way that duplication of data entry will often result in errors being made. On a visit to one operation, we saw that the same information was being put in 5 different times, and multiple programs were used for mapping, billing, load sheets, etc. I had a memory from years ago when the wife of an operator wanted to buy our Chem-Man software. However, she did NOT buy it to send out bills or to do reporting. She wanted to show her husband (who was against using computers) that it could streamline their business. The following year she came to me at a convention and just had to tell me the results. She said, "I compared my entries to his manual calculations, and he had made over $18,000 in mistakes, most of them to one large grower. She said that he was too embarrassed to go to the grower and ask for the difference. Needless to say, they used the program going forward. This story always reminds me that sometimes we are not always aware of our mistakes, and it never hurts to have a system to doublecheck your work.
B 14 | agairupdate.com
Even when I write my articles, I'll send them out to several members of our Chem-Man team, and they often find mistakes that I overlooked. I always appreciate it. When we created our online software in 2015, we added the option to schedule work with maps and then have the ability to turn it into an invoice. We wanted to create an all-in-one solution so that data duplication could be avoided in most cases. Creating a job (work order) creates your mapping, load sheets, GPS files, inventory files, EPA regulation reports, commission records, and invoicing. The reports from this data can be generated in a matter of minutes. I'm still amazed that some people tell me that they receive maps on things like a napkin. I can't imagine having to duplicate this on a real mapping system. (This was the case in a recent new addition to our company). We have seen a real uptick in the number of companies contracting out and letting the retailers/coops enter the jobs (esp. in the "corn run"). Some of our customers said this is helping them from re-entering maps that were emailed or brought to them. It's instantaneous when a job is entered, and time is saved from duplication. It's also great because the data was entered directly by the company requesting the work, so they are accountable for the entry.
UNITED STATES
Many operators have told me, "I prefer manually calculating the loads because things change so fast." I get this. However, it never hurts to let the program give you a good template for comparison just in case you get distracted (as we all do) and make a mistake. We all understand how vital the loader information is when dealing with chemical applications. I always emphasize that the qualifications of someone entering data need to be meticulous and mindful that their data input is affecting what is being sprayed, the area being sprayed, and the bills that go out. Make sure you hire qualified candidates, and as an operator of a business, you learn how to navigate the program yourself (or someone close to you does). Remember that your data reported is only as good as your data input. Bottom line! I've seen so many scenarios, and it's important to me that your operation is efficient, accurate and makes your customer satisfied knowing they're working with a professional company. Y'all stay safe!

Airplane and Decal Restoration via the Arkansas Agricultural Aviation Newsletter
Back in August of 2021, the Arkansas Agricultural Aviation Association was contacted by Jason Ledbetter of Michigan asking for a historic Plant Board Aerial Application License from the late 1940’s - 1970’s. He was participating in the restoration of a former crop duster from Arkansas and thought it would be great to remake a smaller, similar decal to represent that phase of history to include on the aircraft today. The historical photo shows 4 of these licenses displayed behind the cockpit, although they are too blurry to read and he was unsure of the colors. The photo of the original airplane is shown below along with a 1965 decal that was shared by Tommy Anderson. A special thanks to Tommy Anderson for finding this historic gem! The restored plane, owned by Joel Colombo, is pictured above. Jason took the image Tommy provided and with the assistance of a friend and Photoshop, he used a photo emulsion silkscreen technique onto vinyl vehicle wrap. We are hoping to get more details on the plane from the owner soon.

Field Study in Corn Reveals Nee Maintain Correct Height Above C by Dr. Scott Bretthauer, NAAA Staff Aerial applicators need to fly at an appropriate height for their aircraft. Flying too low prevents the spray pattern from developing to its full width. It can also greatly reduce uniformity within the pattern itself. A field study by Alan Corr from Agri-Spray Consulting, Ken Ferrie from Crop-Tech Consulting and Matt Gill from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign examined deposition from aerial applications in a corn canopy. The flying was done by David Baurer with Palmer Flying Service in Manito, Illinois. The project was sponsored by Bayer Crop Science. The purpose of the study was to identify potential causes for some of the streaking seen in corn fungicide applications from the 2021 season. Several treatments were examined with a single replication, including different nozzle setups and application heights. For each treatment, an AT-802 made two adjacent passes with a 90-foot swath width. Spray
B 18 | agairupdate.com
coverage was captured on white sampling cards located in the top, ear level and lower parts of the corn canopy. The corn was just entering the VT growth stage. Sampling began at the center of the first pass and went to the center of the second pass to see if canopy penetration and deposition were reduced in the zone of overlap between the two passes. Data for all the treatments showed high variability across the 90-foot swath, which is to be expected for sampling at a 5-foot interval in a plant canopy where much of the spray is intercepted by plant tissue. The results do show that with flat fan nozzles and the aircraft operated with a boom height of around 12 to 15 feet above the canopy, there was no indication of a reduction in spray coverage and deposition in the zone of spray overlap between the two passes.
UNITED STATES
This was true for all three sampling locations in the canopy: top, ear level and lower parts of the canopy. Flying much lower, with the wheels almost in the canopy, appears to have caused a roughly 15-foot gap with reduced spray deposition in the zone of overlap between the two passes. This reduction was found at all three sampling heights in the canopy. This reinforces the fact that aerial applicators need to fly at an appropriate height for their aircraft. Flying too low prevents the spray pattern from developing to its full width. It can also greatly reduce uniformity within the pattern itself. If you have had your aircraft pattern-tested at an Operation S.A.F.E. fly-in, do not expect to fly it at a much lower height in the field and use the same swath width. When switching to straight stream nozzles, there was a gap in deposition between the two passes. This gap is to be expected, however, as the same target swath width of 90 feet was used by the pilot. Based on the results of this study, a 75-foot swath width would have been more appropriate for these nozzles. Straight stream nozzles create a larger droplet size that typically results in an overall narrower spray pattern. This trend has also been seen at numerous Operation S.A.F.E. fly-ins. When switching nozzles from flat fans to straight streams, it is critical to understand that swath width will have to be reevaluated and likely reduced. Have your spray pattern analyzed at an Operation S.A.F.E. fly-in to determine its optimum swath width.

Gavin Morse 1983-2022 Gavin Barry Morse, 38, of rural Adams County, Washington took his final flight July 2, 2022. Gavin was born September 29, 1983 in Spokane, WA as the youngest of four children and only son to Bruce Morse and Maribeth Benson.
Gavin grew up in the Spokane area and came to the Columbia Basin as a student in the Big Bend Community College Aviation program. It was during his time at Big Bend that Gavin met the love of his life, and partner in all things, Erin Wolf, while dirt biking in the Beezley Hills. Gavin and Erin were married October 8, 2005 in Quincy, Washington, where they resided for many years while Gavin was employed at Royal Flying Service, in Royal City, WA. Gavin's lifelong passion was aviation. From a young age he was interested in airplanes and dreamed of being a pilot. Gavin worked tirelessly to make his dreams come true, and on July 7, 2007 he flew his first paid flight as an agricultural pilot. Gavin and Erin relocated to Connell, WA when he was presented with the opportunity to work for B&R Aerial Crop Care, and it was in Connell they grew their family with the addition of daughter, Magdalene. The Morse family briefly moved to Oakesdale, WA to work at Fender Flying service for the growing season, where they welcomed daughter, Adlai. In the fall of 2015, they moved to their current home and place of business in rural Adams County to pursue their dream of owning their own aerial application service, and GEM Air, Inc. was born. Gavin had a servant's heart. In his 20s, he served as a volunteer firefighter at Grant County Fire District 3 in Quincy, Washington and in recent years he volunteered his time, equipment, and skills to fight fires aerially in the surrounding towns and farmland. He was passionate about and a champion for the ag aviation industry. He served as the President of the Association of Washington Aerial Applicators and as the WA state Representative for the National Association of Aerial Applicators Board of Directors. In those roles he was very involved in advocacy for the Ag aviation industry and his influence was crucial in the outcome of legislation such as the Notification Bill, Application Over Forest Land Bill, and the Low-Level Aviation Safety Law. B 22 | agairupdate.com
While Gavin's favorite place was the sky, he also loved adventuring with his family- camping, boating, riding dirt bikes, and traveling. He was known for the saltwater aquariums he nurtured over the years, his love of fancy cheese and hot sauce, and all things space and astronomy related, but most of all he was known for the way he loved to connect with people. Gavin was passionate, charismatic, and always had a twinkle in his eye. He had a way of always making people feel valued, included, and seen. Gavin liked to encourage others to dream big, work hard, and love what they do, just as he did. Gavin was a devout Christian, and his love of the Lord was apparent to all who knew him. He shared that deep faith with his wife and daughters, and they take comfort in knowing he is in the arms of his Savior. Gavin is survived by his wife, Erin (Wolf) Morse, and daughters Magdalene and Adlai.

Do “Pretty” Foods Equal Healthy Products? We have a serious problem in society today, and that’s being a sucker for a pretty display. Look at new products on the market compared to the “standard” products we are used to. Even familiar brands are rebranding to make their logos and packaging more appealing. Why might this be?
We have a serious problem in society today, and that’s being a sucker for a pretty display.
B 24 | agairupdate.com
We are frequently being fooled as consumers. Society has become extremely visual; we find ‘pretty’ things more appealing, especially women who do the most household shopping. Our expanding visual nature, primarily due to the internet, means we find packaging that we like and purchase those products with little regard to the ingredients, nutrition, or other label considerations. Colorful packaging often comes with a higher price tag, adding to the underlying insinuation that the product is superior to the bland packaging of the cheaper products. Companies get you to pay more at check out without changing what’s inside the box, only changing the box itself.
For example, look at the variety of eggs available in your local grocer. The conventional eggs come in dull, foam, or cardboard cartons with solid coloring. Stack that product next to a sleek, clear packaging with a heavily designed carton, covered in phrases like ‘happy hens,’ ‘laid fresh, ‘nutrient-rich, ‘all-natural,’ etc. Which do your eyes gravitate to on the shelf? Which product would you put in your cart despite the $1.50 price difference? Many consumers have started to choose the betterdesigned packaging, maybe because they like the way it looks in their fridge, perhaps because they are easily swayed to believe the gimmicks made on the carton. In the end, though, they are just gimmicks. That is the issue with pretty packaging. Consumers buy the products because of how it makes them feel, sometimes regardless of the products themselves. In the case of the egg cartons, there is no difference in nutrition or quality of the eggs themselves, yet consumers aren’t picking the cheaper product from perception alone. ➤

Similar situations happen in the fresh produce market or meat products, too. Meat can appear healthier or more attractive with extra labels, stickers, or colors, but is it worth paying extra for that? The same meat product can be packaged in five different ways, which is even more common in the fresh produce world. One larger scale produce field can likely be packaged and marketed multiple ways, and the end purchaser would never even know it. Consumers also want “perfect” produce… yet don’t understand the importance of crop protection products (pesticides) and just what a significant role they play in keeping produce “pretty.” “Misfit” style produce is undoubtedly on the rise, where less than perfect “ugly” style produce is for sale at a discount. This is a win-win to reduce food waste, raise awareness of food production, offer more affordable food options, help farmers by utilizing a higher yield, and so much more. It’s economically viable and earth-friendly; however, this is still a tiny percentage of produce sales. Appealing packaging and gimmick lines sometimes trick consumers into believing that conventional products are no longer good enough. Shoppers are starting to second guess whether conventional ways of raising food are the “right” way or if there are “better” methods to get products from B 26 | agairupdate.com
farm to table. While I appreciate that consumers want to be more involved in where their food comes from, I wish they would start at the source, the farmers, instead of believing marketing tactics full of myths in the grocery aisles. There is nothing wrong with conventional farming. It is a safe, efficient way to deliver wholesome and affordable food to consumers worldwide. Don’t be fooled by pretty packaging. Don’t be tricked into paying higher prices for the same products and the same food on your table. Want more information about where your food comes from? Reach out, and we’ll connect you to a local farmer that can help explain exactly what happens at their farm and farms just like theirs. Next time you’re in the grocery aisle, think about this – is it worth it to pay extra for a similar product or even the same thing? Moreover, there’s an excellent chance that the farmer is seeing zero additional profits from packaging and marketing sales – these profit margins are likely going to the multi-million dollar corporations. If you’d like to help farmers be more profitable, the best thing you can do is buy from them directly but if that’s not an option, know that any farm can produce a safe, nutritious and healthy product regardless of the package. As a spin-off of Geico commercials – “fifteen minutes with a farmer could save you fifteen percent or more on your grocery bill!”

Getting Our Wisdom From God “Where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? Man does not know its value, nor is it found in the land of the living… Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding” (Job 28:12-13, 28). B 28 | agairupdate.com
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5). There’s a vast difference between the wisdom of God and the wisdom of this world. The only place we can find God’s wisdom for our life is from God’s word, the Bible! Job asked the question, “Where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? Man does not know its value, nor is it found in the land of the living…Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding” (Job 28:12-13, 28). We can’t buy or earn God’s wisdom, it’s a gift from God! Solomon asked God for His wisdom (2 Chronicles 1:7-12). God’s wisdom is one of our greatest needs. We can’t be discerning and discriminating without divine counsel from our heavenly Father; and the primary means for achieving that wisdom is prayer. “For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding” (Proverbs 2:6).
“But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind” (James 1:6). Real and active faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior believes God is sovereign, loving, and that God will give us the understanding we need to go through the good times and problems in our earthly life. We’re not to pray for things to fulfill our fleshly pleasures and lusts (James 4:3); our prayers are not a blank check for anything we want. Our prayers are to bring glory to God, not to ourselves (John 14:13-14). The word “doubt” comes from the Greek word “Diakrino” which means to dispute, argue, or debate with God about keeping His promises to us. The doubtful person who doesn’t ask God in faith and doubts God will answer their prayers is like the wind driven surging, billowing and restless sea. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that
UNITED STATES
the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:15-17). God’s word will guide Christians to the truths of God’s wisdom if we’ll submit to Him (John 16:13). Our heavenly Father gives us access to His eternal and unlimited wisdom to meet our own needs as well as the needs of others. God’s wisdom teaches Christians how to live our life while we’re on this earth. God’s wisdom teaches a Christian how to relate to their husband/wife and their children. God’s wisdom teaches Christians how to be a good employer, good employee, how to relate to government authorities and church leaders. “For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God” (1 Corinthians 2:11). Every person knows things about them self that no one else knows unless that person reveals them. That’s the way it is with God; we cannot know anything about God unless the Holy Spirit reveals them to us from the Bible. We can see nature, the heavens, and many other things that God has created, but they don’t tell us the deep things of God—only the Bible can do that. Humans cannot understand the gospel of Jesus Christ unless the Holy Spirit reveals it to us from the Bible.

“For ‘who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?’ But we have the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16). Paul is telling us that no one can know the mind of Christ unless the Holy Spirit teaches them. The only way a person can receive the Holy Spirit is to trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior (Ephesians 1:13-14). Jesus said, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31-32). God’s truths will set us free from the ungodly customs and traditions of this satanically controlled world, and will set us free from the legalism that’s within many churches. God’s wisdom is slow to condemn and quick to show compassion and forgiveness. God’s wisdom will guide us in overcoming the difficult situations in our life. God’s wisdom is Jesus Christ centered and Holy Spirit directed. God’s word is perfect and infallible, but we need His Holy Spirit to interpret, illumine, encourage and spiritually strengthen us as we read and study the Bible. God doesn’t want us to have all the answers; He wants us to be students who search the Scriptures. The Bible is a limitless store of divine truth. Apart from God Himself we can’t begin to fathom its depths and eternal riches. God gives enough truth for us to be responsible, but enough mystery for us to be dependent. He gives us His Word to draw us to Him and direct our lives. All we have to do is ask God for His wisdom to guide our earthly life. agairupdate.com | B 29

TWENTY YEARS AGO
(L-R) Owner Mike Detraz, pilot Tommy Watson and wing jumper, Colby Durke with Detraz Flying Service’s two Tiger Pac Ag Cats.
Walter Engine Proves Itself to Detraz F/S by Bill Lavender
ABBEVILLE, LA — Jim Jeffries called, “Hey Bill, I know of an interesting ag operator in south Louisiana that you should make plans to visit.” Jim, with his propeller balancing business Jeffries Airworks, has the opportunity to stop at numerous ag operations throughout the country. I like to think of him as my “bird dog”, pointing out to me a likely story. It seemed this suggestion from Jim to visit Detraz Flying Service was going to be one of those good ones, especially when he told me about Big Mike’s boiled crawfish! As many know, I’m a sucker (no pun intended) for fresh crawfish. Detraz Flying Service, owned and operated by Mike Detraz, Jr., has its airstrip adjacent to his father’s place where about a million pounds of crawfish are brokered every season. With my other pending duties in southern Louisiana, an overnight stay in Abbeville was inevitable, crawfish and all! B 30 | agairupdate.com
Mike Detraz, Jr. started his flying service straight out of ag school in 1992. He attended Harold Aviation in Bainbridge, Georgia at 17 years old and barely out of high school. For three years, he was recognized by the LAAA as the youngest ag operator in the state. It was a tough way to get into the ag flying business, starting young and green. But, Mike had grown up on the farm and worked for an ag operator in the summers of his high school years, so he wasn’t completely green. However, Detraz Flying Service has paid a heavy price for starting out with these challenging conditions. Mike’s first year in business he bought an A-Model Ag Cat powered by an R-1340. He had lined up 2,100 acres of rice that would need a minimum of five applications during the season. Before the season was out, he crashed the Ag Cat, luckily with no injuries, other than to his pride. By Mike’s own admission, pure inexperience was the reason for the crash. ➤

Big Mike (Mike Detraz’s dad) displays a fine batch of freshly boiled crawfish, keeping them warm in the cooler (oxymoron?)
In his second year, Mike added another A-Model R-1340 Ag Cat for a total of two, to accommodate his growing business. He hired a friend to fly it. The second Ag Cat started the season with a zero-time engine, ending abruptly with an engine failure with only 10 hours on the engine.
The first Tiger Pac Ag Cat had served Mike so well, that he replaced the Mills Conversion with another Walter powered Tiger Pac Ag Cat. The turbine powered Ag Cats can work from the 1800-foot sod strip without any problems, loaded, all day long. The Tiger Pac is capable of ferrying at a respectable airspeed of 130 mph. Turns are easy, ideal for working rice and sugar cane.
Subsequently, Detraz Flying Service lost its second airplane in its second year in business.
By now, Detraz Flying Service’s accounts have grown from 2,100 acres of rice in 1992, to more than 13,000 acres with an additional 20,000 acres of sugar cane on the books in 2002. The Tiger Pac Ag Cats fly eleven months of the year, a combined total of 1,400 hours. The season begins with working rice in early March through July. By then, the sugar cane applications have started, with the season winding down spreading rye grass seed on 5,000 acres.
By his fourth year, Mike’s business had grown to operating three A-Model Ag Cats. Rice acreage was increasing, along with more sugar cane acreage needing his services. In the fifth year, Detraz Flying Service made the step from piston to turbine. Mike replaced two of the R-1340 powered Ag Cats with a Mills conversion PT6A-20 Ag Cat. Liking the power and reliability of the turbine engine, Mike expanded his fleet to include a newly converted Tiger Pac Ag Cat powered with a Walter M601E engine. It was the year 2000. However, disaster struck in 2001 when Mike’s pilot, flying the Mills Conversion, was killed when he flew into a tower, destroying the third Detraz Flying Service’s Ag Cat within eight years of operation. B 32 | agairupdate.com
However, the black cat was not through with the Tiger Pac Ag Cats of Detraz Flying Service. In the spring of this year, pilot Tommy Watson was landing on a narrow canal levee, when the left brake locked. Trying to keep the aircraft tracking straight was impossible without locking the right brake, preventing him from going into the canal. As if landing in slow motion, Tommy called-in to the base explaining his dilemma as the Walter powered Tiger Pac Ag Cat slowly went up on its nose. ➤

Mike Detraz with just a few of the 1,000,000 pounds of crawfish that are brokered through Shawnee’s Bait Shop crawfish buying house. Big Mike and Shawnee (“Little” Mike’s mom) also sell huge amounts of crawfish bait to the crawfish fishermen. A one-stop market for selling crawfish and picking up bait to fish for more. These croaker sacks are filled with LIVE crawfish.
Although the levee was relatively soft, causing minimum damage to the airframe of the Ag Cat, the Walter engine was running and the prop turning upon impact, a force strong enough to bend the propeller blades beyond repair and tear the bottom cowling completely off the aircraft. But, what about the Walter engine? Jimmy LeBlanc, Mike’s hired mechanic, dismantled the aircraft and it was trucked back to Darryl Riddell’s in West Helena, Arkansas for repairs. Unlike what was expected, when Mike got the bill for the repairs, the engine portion was only $1,700! It seems, as in similar instances before with other Walter engines, the engine is very tolerable of a nose strike. Of course, there are limits, but in Mike’s incident, the B 34 | agairupdate.com
Walter engine supported the impact of the nose-over with minimal damage. Most would agree, it is time for the black cat to jump off of the Detraz Flying Service’s Ag Cats and find a home somewhere else. An education is expensive, whether it is bought from a school, or learned in the classroom of hard knocks. Even so, who can say Detraz Flying Service would not have had the same problems under any other circumstances, a string of bad luck that could happen to any ag operator, young or old. However, Mike’s luck has not all been bad. Lady luck stopped by when Mike married his wife, Angie, and again a few years later with the birth of their daughter, Jennah. According to Mike, these two ladies are more important than any Ag Cat he has ever owned!

Mabry I. Anderson An Insider’s History of Agricultural Aviation
The Spread To The Eastern Seaboard — Chapter Five continued…
View of Chris Stoltzfus' operation at Coatesville, Pennsylvania, in 1947.
The success of the Stoltzfus firm, plus the owner's engaging personality and charm, helped spread the agricultural aviation business all over the Northeast. Firms sprang up not only in Pennsylvania, but in New York, Ohio, West Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, and Maryland. Many were the direct result of contacts with Stoltzfus at Coatesville. Among such firms still in existence are Carroll Voss's Ag-Rotors, Inc. at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; Beilers Crop Service at Massey, Maryland; Chance Davis' Shenendoah Agri-Air at Martinsburg, West Virginia; and Tallman Aerial Spraying at Dauphin, Pennsylvania. Chris Stoltzfus passed away of a heart condition, at the relatively young age of 67, in July 1981. Those who knew him personally realized that the industry had lost one of its truly outstanding figures. He left a legacy of fine work, plus the memory of a talent and an enthusiasm not seen too often in any field. B 36 | agairupdate.com
He also left two sons, both following somewhat in his footsteps. Kenneth operates an aviation firm in Ohio, and Karl operates another in Virginia. But most of all, Carl Stoltzfus left an added dimension of respectability to the industry. He made those around him aspire to be better. Differences of opinion exist as to where and when the first agricultural flying was done in New York State. But it seems quite certain that the orchard regions of the Hudson Valley and the muckland truck farming area around Middletown, Warwick, and Florida, New York, became centers of agricultural aviation after World War II. A look at this region, especially the singular and fabulous "muckland" near Middletown, makes it easy to understand how agricultural flying developed here. ➤

Nature in one of her more bountiful moods, created this fabulous muckland area from a dry lake bed that lies in more or less horseshoe shape around a range of rugged and rocky hills. Comprising some 18,000 acres, it is perfectly flat, with jet-black soil. The land actually appears to be made up of finely ground soot and underneath the thick layer of top soil lies a secondary soil type that is saturated with water to such a degree that it is "muck." It can only be farmed with specially built equipment with extremely wide wheels and tires that enable it to traverse the fields without sinking. With this sort of terrain, it is no wonder that early agricultural flyers gravitated to an area where the use of the airplane was "natural" due to its ability to fly over fields which did not easily support ground equipment. This was especially true in the muckland area, noted for its extraordinary yields of high income producing crops such as onions, lettuce, celery, radishes, tomatoes, potatoes-almost any vegetable. It is a revelation to stand at the edge of one of these fabulous fields and look out across a "patch" of onions of approximately a thousand acres that gives way to another "patch" of celery of another thousand acres or more. A local pilot, Don Webber of Columbia County, may have been number one in New York ag work, since available records verify that he purchased a Pi per P A-12 in 1944 and began doing orchard dusting at least by 1945 and 1946 near the town of Claremont. Webber began flying in the late 1930s and, after establishing himself tentatively in the application business, began to expand with the purchase of a J-3 and later some Stearmans. He also set up his own airstrip and began developing the business. Among his early pilots were John Slater and Ray Galeta. Later, about 1966, Mervin Lewis worked briefly for Webber as a ground man and a pilot. Webber was responsible for the rapid growth of orchard spraying and dusting all through the Hudson Valley and into the neighboring areas. He experimented widely with planes, techniques, and equipment and was the first operator in the region to install and use the Micronair Rotory Atomizers. Another relatively unrecognized pioneer of the muckland region was John Dowd, a native of the Warwick Middletown area who began his flying career before the war and gravitated into agricultural flying in 1946. Dowd acquired a Piper J-3 with a Whitaker dispensing system. With the help of friend Joe Coleman, he set up a small operation at Warwick and began working the muckland onion crop that year. B 38 | agairupdate.com
In a recent interview, Dowd said: "All that I had was this one J-3 and all that my farmers had was some DDT dust. But I really began living in that Cub and pouring that dust on those onion thrips that were tearing into the crop. We must have done a pretty fair job, because farmers began demanding the service all over the black land area. Pretty soon some new materials were reaching us, including some new fungicides that were applicable to the vegetable crops in that region. The result was that I began to expand a bit and gave my firm a name, Dowd Aero Dusting Service, with an operation strip at Warwick." Dowd then graduated to some Stearman aircraft and also made an unusual conversion by installing a 115 HP Lycoming in the J-3 Piper. This modification, unheard of at that time, greatly improved the performance of the J-3 and noticeably increased its load carrying capacity. John Dowd operated this firm successfully until recently, when he finally dissolved it and "semi-retired" by taking a flying job with Mervin Lewis' Airspray, Inc., on a part-time basis. His son John "Dusty" Dowd, Jr., now operates his own agricultural aviation firm at Syracuse, Kansas. "Dusty" Dowd, in addition to his agricultural operation, is a skilled mechanic and recently restored to mint condition a pre-war Waco, which is his pride and joy. Another colorful and significant New York operation was the one organized by Anthony (Tony) Lascala about 1951 in Orange County with the catchy name, Spunky Air Dusters, Inc. Lascala, a Navy veteran, actually first organized an early agricultural co-op called Sleepy Hollow Produce Growers for the marketing of truck crops produced in the muckland region. Spunky Air Dusters became an integral part of this operation. Stearmans were acquired and some pilots hired, among them the wellknown Preston Bailey, who originally came from Maine and Connecticut, and Barry Baker, another New Englander who had done early ag work in Connecticut on tobacco. LaScala's Spunky Dusters quickly made a name for itself in the black lands and through the years spawned other firms that became well-known in their own right. Mervin Lewis, who had briefly worked with Don Webber, became one of Spunky's leading pilots during the 1960s, about the time the firm moved into the "modem" aircraft era and began converting its fleet to AgCats.

Turbine Conversions, Ltd and VDCI Conduct Aircraft Clinic Utilizing Zanoni Atomizers for Mosquito Control by Lucas Zanoni Photos by Mark Grahek
In late April 2022, Turbine Conversions, Ltd and Vector Disease Control International conducted a research protocol for mosquito control with aerial application using a Navajo Chieftain and a Piper Aztec. The project was carried out in Utah and evaluated the droplet spectrum offered by Zanoni's Brazilian-manufactured rotary atomizer. Zanoni Equipamentos, a Brazilian manufacturer of aerial spray systems, participated in their first NAAA Convention in 2018 and brought one of their rotary atomizers to the USA. A 34 | agairupdate.com
Today, this is the most popular type of application technology for insecticide and fungicide aerial crop spraying in South America. At that time, the Hatfield family (their partners in North America) put them in touch with one of the USA's top experts in aerial mosquito control. Al Allen, Allen Aviation, in South Carolina, provides aerial application services for farmers on the East Coast with his Air Tractors and Thrush Aircraft. In addition to Ag work, he has also worked for the last three decades with mosquito control using his Ag fleet and his Piper Aztec, performing prevention work and emergency response for North and South Carolina counties. ➤

After some suggestions from Al Allen, Zanoni Equipamentos made some adjustments to its atomizer and sent the first set to work with mosquito control in the USA. Allen and an American chemical manufacturer performed several tests with the atomizer to ensure it would give the desired results. The performance of the equipment was very positive. With feedback from the first round of testing, Mark Grahek of Turbine Conversions, Ltd (Zanoni products manager in the USA) saw an opportunity to help the US market with this new product, "We found better quality and more affordable options than was previously available in the marketplace. Zanoni atomizers have superior durability, guaranteeing the operator lower maintenance costs and a long service life without compromising the equipment." A 36 | agairupdate.com
Since then, Turbine Conversions, Ltd (TCL) has conducted several tests with the Zanoni atomizer in partnership with mosquito operators in the USA (in addition to research for the control of forest pests in Canada). The most recent was with Vector Disease Control International (VDCI). Headquartered in Arkansas, VDCI was founded in 1992 to provide full-service Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM) programs designed to protect public health by controlling nuisance and disease vector mosquitoes utilizing scientifically and environmentally sound products and strategies. The company operates in more than 20 states and countries, serving municipalities, mosquito abatement districts, community and homeowner associations, golf courses, industrial, government facilities, and the military. ➤

Within its wide range of services, aerial application stands out for allowing treatment of areas too large, dense, or hazardous for teams in trucks or on foot to access. The company highlights that this is a crucial tool for scenarios when the threat is significant, and the treatment window is small. TCL's new project started with conversations between Mark Grahek, Broox Boze (Technical Director of VDCI and the American Association for Mosquito Control, AMCA), and Lucas Zanoni (responsible for Zanoni Equipamentos R&D and international business). After a brief online call, Mark and Lucas brought VDCI to a virtual meeting with Brazilian operators for the exchange of information between the industries, in a conversation with Julio Kampf (president of IBRAVAG, the Brazilian Ag Aviation Allied Industry), Gabriel Colle (executive director of SINDAG, the association of ag aviation operators in Brazil) and Eduardo Araújo (SINDAG
consultant currently responsible for promoting the mosquito control programs in Brazil). In addition to helping the Brazilians with strategies to expand aerial applications in mosquito control, the American company has now helped the manufacturer develop a research protocol in the field. Held in Utah in late April, the aircraft clinic evaluated the droplet spectrum of Zanoni atomizers on a Navajo Chieftain and a Piper Aztec. The calibrations trials with the Zanoni M14 Rotary atomizers showed that they could meet label requirements for adult mosquito control operations (Dv0.5<60um, and DV0.9<115). Boze gave us her impressions of the results, "This is the droplet spectrum pattern we need for mosquito control. Very small droplets ensure a large number of them in the target (i.e., a large density). This is how we manage to kill the mosquitoes and ensure a safe and sound aerial application." ➤ agairupdate.com | A 39

The VDCI staff also gave more details about the specifics and requirements of this type of work, which requires coordination with local law enforcement and communication with local aviation agencies since pilots are flying over urban areas. But, despite being a different type of aerial application, it has many similar characteristics to crop spraying, "First, we need to determine what species we are trying to control. Next, a detailed map should be utilized to review the exact location that the application is desired. Then, a review of what product is being considered for application. Once the product is determined, aerial applicators will revisit their flight plan to ensure the mission dispensed the correct amount of chemical out of the aircraft so as not to exceed the time allotment. Throughout the process, the mosquito control team should answer all questions, address all concerns, and maintain clear communications with the customer. Understanding the environmental conditions of an area is an important part of completing a successful mission". This project, like many others in the previous decades, is because of cooperation between the aerial application industries of the two countries. Brazil has been receiving many new Air Tractors, with a fleet of nearly one hundred from the USA annually. This has given maturity to their industry, helping both countries to fly faster. With the addition of quality A 40 | agairupdate.com
atomizers, the Brazilian allied industry can now support North American operators with a better solution for low-volume work that was not previously available. The exchange of knowledge, research, and experiences between Brazil and the USA is a win-win for all Ag pilots and improves the industry on both sides of the Equator.
