A Great Expo in a New City
The National Agricultural Aviation Association’s 2022 Ag Aviation Expo is now an event of the past, and what a great success it was! Admittedly, I had doubts about the venue being in Knoxville, Tennessee. However, it was a pleasant surprise for Knoxville to be a great place for the convention! Although the weather was not the best one could hope for, it was bearable, and actually, I believe it helped with the exhibit hall attendance; rain outside meant more people inside.
I heard many good comments about several events at the convention. People expressed their enjoyment at listening to AgAir Update’s contributing columnist, Michelle Miller, aka the Farm Babe. Michelle has a unique way of presenting what we should all know, but after hearing her, she can better relate the obvious to the uninitiated.
I am unsure how so many crop dusters and their significant others learned to throw axes. They must have discovered the art at the loading pad, and their significant others must have figured it out during the off-season! NAAA’s AXEing for PAASS fundraising event for NAAREF was a phenomenal success. It would be best to be on the lookout for any flying tomahawks!
As in the past, Pratt and Whitney Canada’s (PWC) donation to the live auction of a new PT6A-34AG turbine engine raised a substantial amount of money. Nick Bunger, from Washington, paid a little over $400,000 for it. There were plenty of other exciting contributions to the auction, including Air Tractor’s donation of a super cool golf cart painted in Air Tractor colors. This noticeably different-appearing golf cart brought over $30,000!
The two 6-hour days of attendee traffic in the convention hall were as good as any I have seen in years past. As usual, traffic was overwhelming the first day, and a little bit subdued the second day. Sometimes a slowdown is a good thing. It allows time for the exhibitor to close a more complicated sale with the extra time to devote to the buyer.
New this year was the Sunday wire-strike avoidance class. It was good to see the room filled to capacity, with a waiting list. It speaks volumes that our industry is to the point where we recognize that we can continue to learn. There was a lot of “experience” in that room, and everyone walked away a little wiser, thus, a little safer.
This year’s NAAA Ag Aviation Expo was well worth the expense and time to attend. There absolutely cannot be a more efficient way to bring together ag aviation’s latest advances in products and services and no better way to get industry friends together. If you missed out on this year’s expo, there is always next year, and the state shows are to be held in between. Next year NAAA will find itself hosting the 2023 Ag Aviation Expo in beautiful and warm Palm Springs, California, December 4-7, 2023. Plan on it!
Until next month, Keep Turning…

Customers Purchasing Pratt & Whitney Canada Engines Can Now Benefit from a New Payment Solution
Longueuil, Quebec, December 6, 2022 – Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC), a business unit of Pratt & Whitney, announced today that it is collaborating with American Express (Amex) to provide qualifying customers with a new solution that will allow them to extend payment terms, when buying a new or used P&WC engine.
“This new payment solution is part of our growing portfolio of services that offer our customers greater flexibility, when it comes to acquiring an engine and it reflects our commitment to developing services that meet their evolving needs,” said Irene Makris, vice president, Customer Service at Pratt & Whitney Canada. “Many of our customers are looking at alternate models to improve their working capital along with options that are specifically tailored to their engine and aircraft operations.”
The new payment solution with Amex will be attractive to customers who have commercial operations and who will appreciate the extended payment terms, allowing them to generate new revenues from the engine asset before having to pay for it.
“At American Express, we’re committed to providing payment solutions to help businesses gain greater flexibility and improve working capital to unlock new opportunities for growth,” said Phanikar Yenamandra, Vice President, B2B Strategy and Enablement, Global Commercial Services at American Express Canada. “We’re
excited about this collaboration with Pratt & Whitney Canada, and to offer a payment solution that will deliver value to its customer base.”
The Amex payment solution, in the initial pilot phase, will be available to new and used engines sold outright or with an exchange as well as those under the company’s P&WCSMART™ program. Engine exchanges, whereby the customer exchanges the used engine for a new, used/timeremaining or freshly overhauled engine, are popular because they require fewer logistics than an overhaul and reduce shop times.
“Our portfolio of flexible, alternative maintenance and payment solutions continues to expand,” said Makris. “Along with our Amex collaboration, we have recently introduced our spare engine solutions portfolio including lease to own, on-wing leasing and long-term leasing options, all of which enable the customer to conserve capital, help keep operating costs down and economically extend the life of the aircraft. These solutions complement P&WC’s payment solutions offerings already available with our existing partners”

Ag Aviation Expo in Knoxville
As Jerry and I drove home from the NAAA convention in Knoxville, I was thinking about what a wonderful time we had. We were extremely busy at the booth, and it was great to see so many familiar faces and new ones too! My voice became hoarse at the end of each day from talking so much!
I was thinking later about the many people I talked to and how their 2022 went. Some operations had a challenging year and were barely able to survive, while others had an outstanding year. Some friends made me laugh, while others made me tear up. I hugged a grieving wife that lost her husband. I hugged a grieving grandmother that lost her grandson. I talked to a man that lost his business partner. One thing for sure about this industry, everyone is resilient and keeps on going.
It was great to be accompanied by some of my team, Phil and Amy. They were glad to put faces with the voices of the people they often talked to. My hubby, Jerry, was delighted to speak to many people too! He’s widely known on Facebook for his “Hubby Pics.”
After 31 years in the industry, it seems “Everyone knows your name.” One couple (around my age) dropped by to look at the software. He told me he had watched me and “ChemMan” since our beginning. He said, “I regret not going with you, but I just knew you probably weren’t going to make it!”. That remark made me smile and giggle at the same time. I learned something about myself: I’m also resilient and keep on going. Question for myself: Maybe that’s why this industry found me?
We had a great class at the nationals. I always appreciate Lyndsay Barber allowing me to have our training session each year. Many of my existing customers had no idea about

everything our program does. They couldn’t wait to return to tell others about their learning.
Now that 2022 is close to being behind us, I’m looking forward to a new year and hope our industry finds ways to be even more prosperous and safe!

The Service Bulletin
In a conversation last week with Pratt & Whitney Canada, the topic of the “Know My PT6” app came up. While discussing the app, it was stated that inputting your aircraft/ engine details will provide you with information specific to your operation. One of the things the app highlights for you are service bulletins categories 1 through 3. It doesn’t give you full access to these service bulletins, but it does call out important issues that could affect your engine. It got me thinking, does everyone understand what service bulletin categories represent?
Service bulletins are issued for a variety of reasons. Parts upgrades or changes, material changes, use of specific consumable materials (i.e., fuel or oil), and cycle tracking are just a few things brought to us by the service bulletin. If a critical situation arises, Pratt & Whitney Canada will send out an alert service bulletin highlighting an important change.
Service bulletins are prioritized by a category number between 1 and 9. Categories 1 through 3 are service bulletins that must be done before the next flight, the next maintenance procedure, or before a specified number of hours or cycles. For instance, service bulletin A1742 was issued for the PT6A-34AG in April 2014. This alert service bulletin required compressor turbine blade inspection or replacement for a specific group of engines. The SB had a category 1 component, meaning it must be done before the next flight. It also had a category 3 component which provided an hour limit that had to be adhered to. This category of service bulletin is one that Pratt and Whitney Canada relies on their Field Service Managers and their engine shop partners to make sure the information is distributed. The “Know My PT6” app alerts you to this type of information.
The next grouping of SBs is Category 4 through 6. These service bulletins, for the most part, pertain to engines being worked on in a shop. Many of them pertain to parts or assemblies in the engine that can only be accessed by disassembling an engine that is not performed outside the shop environment. For example, service bulletin 14377, the latest revision in August 2021. This SB is for some -60 series engines that include the PT6A-67AG. It is a Category 6 service bulletin; Pratt & Whitney Canada recommends doing this SB when the sub-assembly is disassembled to access the affected part. In this case, the power turbine shaft housing. That is not a part that is accessible except in a shop environment. One other topic of note in this service bulletin is that the manufacturer is also providing an additional price reduction on this part if you choose to follow the guidance and replace it. This is done through commercial support programs or CSPN. These programs are typically for a limited time and allow additional discounts on new parts from Pratt & Whitney Canada.
The final groupings of service bulletins are categorized from 7 through 9. These categories usually contain changes caused by supplier changes, operator concerns or other changes. Some of these changes include airframe manufacturerrequested changes or governmental changes. Service Bulletin 13526, issued in November 2021, is an example. This SB is a Category 7 for some 60 series engines, including the PT6A-65AG. There is a component within the engine that is chrome plated. Due to new standards of the “Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restriction of Chemicals” (REACH) regulations, there is a replacement component available that is not chrome plated. Pratt & Whitney Canada recommends replacing the old part once the supply has run out. This means that new engines will come with the new part installed, and they will no longer sell the old part. ➤

Coronary Heart Disease
by Dr. Penny Giovanetti, Director of FAA Aviation Medical Specialties Division
Although there have been steady improvements in prevention and treatment, coronary heart disease (CHD) remains the leading cause of adult death in the United States. CHD is also referred to as coronary artery disease (CAD) and involves plaque, a waxy substance that can build up inside coronary arteries. This build-up is known as atherosclerosis and occurs over decades, beginning often in the teenage years. This results in ischemia, a limitation in the supply of oxygenated blood to your heart muscle. As this blockage increases over time it can lead to complications like angina (chest pain), heart attack(s), abnormal rhythms, and heart failure.
Aeromedical Concerns
Here are some important concerns for pilots diagnosed with CAD. First, CAD can be silent; sometimes it can lead
to a rapid occlusion of a coronary artery and the initial presentation is a heart attack. Second, even if you are asymptomatic on the ground, the decrease in oxygen at altitude could lead to ischemia and its complications. Third, stressful situations (e.g., inclement weather encounter, inflight emergencies, etc.) that increase your heart rate can further increase cardiac demand. Finally, carbon monoxide poisoning can exacerbate all of these risks.
While even mild symptoms create distractions from essential flying tasks, over twenty percent of deaths from cardiac disease occur suddenly and unexpectedly after rapid occlusion of a heart blood vessel by a clot. The risk of sudden cardiac death is greater in those who have cardiac disease. That is why it is so important to get symptoms evaluated early, to regularly monitor the disease once diagnosed, and to comply with recommended treatment. ➤

Frequently Asked Questions
If I am diagnosed with CHD, can I ever fly again?
Very likely, yes, especially if detected and treated early enough to preserve cardiac function. We look at many factors when deciding whether it is safe for an airman to continue to fly with CHD. These include how much plaque is present and where it is located. The key is whether all areas of the heart will receive an adequate blood supply even under stress. Various treatments such as medication, stenting, and bypass surgery may be necessary to improve blood supply.
If I have a heart attack, can I ever fly again?
Once more, a “yes” is likely. We consider many factors. These include: how much heart muscle died and can the remaining muscle pump enough blood sufficient for demand; is the heart rhythm satisfactory; is there angina? We can accept an implanted pacemaker under most conditions, but not a defibrillator.
How do I get a special issuance?
Start with your Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) who can guide you through the process. You can also consult the AME Guide online. Select “disease protocols,” then “coronary heart
disease,” for more detail about recovery times and follow-up documentation.
Who makes the decision about my special issuance?
Depending on the specifics of your case, and what class of airman medical certificate you are requesting, the decision may be made by one of the aeromedical certification physicians with experience in cardiology or be referred to the Federal Air Surgeon Cardiology Panel. This panel consists of four to five board-certified cardiologists who will review your clinical information and test results with some of the aeromedical certification physicians and make a recommendation to the Federal Air Surgeon. Depending on the condition and your class of medical certificate, once you obtain a special issuance for your heart disease, your AME might be authorized to grant renewals.
An Ounce of Prevention
The best way to protect your flying status is to prevent CHD in the first place. A few simple steps can significantly reduce disease progression. If you smoke, stop today. Try to exercise for 30 minutes at least five days a week, but any exercise is beneficial. Shed excess weight and aim for a body mass index less than 28. Discuss with your doctor your best steps to lower lipids and blood pressure.

A WING AND A PRAYER
Carlin Lawrence carlin@agairupdate.com
Christians are Chosen by God to be Blameless in His Sight
“Whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:15-16).
“For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight” (Ephesians 1:4). With the exception of Jesus Christ, all of humanity have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). None of us have lived up to God’s laws, we’re all natural born sinners, and within ourselves, none of us are holy and without blame. But even with all of our sins, faults and mistakes, it is God’s desire and purpose that we be holy and without blame in His sight. Jude wrote, “Now unto Him who is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy.” But how can God do this for sinful humans?
One of the problems is that many humans have a wrong concept of God. They believe that God is sort of like Santa Claus, making a list, checking it twice and seeing how naughty or nice we have been. Then He gives gifts to the good, and sticks and stones to the bad. But that’s not how the Bible describes God. God desires for all humans to live with Him in His eternal kingdom, but He must punish sin. “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin” (Romans 4:7-8).
Jesus said, “Whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:15-16). If you look
at God’s record of every true believer you will find that God has imputed on our account the righteousness of Jesus Christ. When God looks at people who have put their faith in Jesus Christ, He doesn’t see their imperfections, their faults or their sins; He only sees the righteousness of Jesus Christ. “God made Him [Jesus] who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Paul wrote of himself, “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:18-25).
Paul understood the sinful nature that we inherited from Adam, and tells us that we will have that natural tendency to sin and the only way we can overrule our sinful nature is to trust in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and receive God’s Holy Spirit and allow Him to

mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight” (Colossians 1:21-22). That’s what God has done for every true believer in Jesus Christ; He can present us holy and without blame to God. That is why salvation is secure to every true believer, because we have Jesus Christ’s perfect righteousness. Our spirit has been redeemed and seeks after the things of God; our spirit thirsts for fellowship with God. But our earthly body has not been redeemed and our fleshly desires are often contrary to the way that God would have us to walk in the Spirit. Paul tells us that if we will walk after the Spirit, we will not fulfill the desires of the flesh (Galatians 5:16).
Standing before God would be a scary thing if we can’t stand there in the righteousness of Jesus Christ. Like the song that says, “Jesus paid it all, all to Him we owe; sin had left a terrible stain, but He washed us white as snow.” Christians will stand before the throne in Jesus Christ completely righteous in God’s sight. And we will have an eternal inheritance incorruptible and undefiled that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for us, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time (1 Peter 1:4-5).

Caroline Reabe, Daughter of Wisconsin Operator Damon Reabe, Makes 4th Generation Solo
by Bethanie Gengler, Ripon Commonwealth Press
The day after her 16th birthday, Ripon, Wisconsin High School sophomore Caroline Reabe departed on her first solo flight on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2022 piloting the same aircraft that her great-grandfather once flew. Not only was it the same aircraft Roy Reabe once flew, it was the exact same aircraft he started is flying service with in 1946. Caroline carried precious cargo on that flight: her paternal greatgrandfather’s burial flag and her maternal grandfather’s ashes.
Caroline descends from a long line of ag pilots. Her paternal great-grandfather, Roy, served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Roy started an ag flying service in Waupun, Wisconsin in 1946, which began as a flight school and charter flight company. He purchased a new, bright yellow Piper J-3 Cub aircraft to start the business, which he sold in the late 1940s. The flight school later transitioned into a crop-dusting company. The businesses — Reabe Spraying Service and Dairyland Aviation — still are active
today. Roy taught his sons and grandsons how to fly. His four sons took over the business in 1979. Roy’s grandson, Damon Reabe of Ripon, took over the aerial application company in 2009.
Damon and his wife, Mary, are both pilots. Mary’s late grandfather and father, Keith and Fred Gimson, also were pilots. Fred later worked as a flight instructor, retiring a week before his passing at age 75 earlier this year. Damon and Mary began giving their daughter, Caroline, flying lessons when she was 14. She’s had about 30 hours of dual instruction. They would have started the lessons sooner but had to wait until Caroline grew tall enough to reach the pedals.
She noted that, at first, learning to fly was challenging. “When I was learning all of the physics and aerodynamic aspects of it … it seemed really complicated, and it was kind of hard for me to understand,” Caroline said, adding that the more she studied and practiced, the easier it became. ➤

About a year and a half ago, Damon tracked down the same J-3 Cub with which Roy started the family business with in 1946. It was in California, and it was in rough shape, unable to be operated. Damon purchased the aircraft and commissioned a person to rebuild the airframe. Caroline’s grandfather, Tom, overhauled the engine.
On a chilly Dec. 1 morning, Caroline entered the cockpit of the J-3 Cub while friends, family, and the family dog looked on. Although Caroline was nervous, once she got in the plane, she said a sense of calmness took over.
“It was crazy because it just felt natural,” she said. “I was just sitting there, realizing that I’m actually doing this.”
She then took flight by herself for the first time, practicing three takeoffs and landings in the J-3 Cub, about 30 minutes of flight time. Her first symbolic passengers were her greatgrandfather and grandfather, whose burial flag and ashes were safely tucked in the baggage compartment.
Damon said watching his daughter take flight brought a sense of pride. “She soloed out in her great-grandfather’s first brand new Piper J-3 Cub that he started our family business with, and we don’t think that’s ever happened anywhere in the world,” he said.
In addition to the J3, Caroline practiced three more takeoffs and landings in a Super Cub. She then departed on a joy ride around Ripon, circling her school and home before landing in Waupun about 45 minutes later with a big smile on her face. ➤

Caroline said she plans to obtain her pilot’s license and follow in her parent’s footsteps. She’s considering a career as a professional airline pilot after graduation. She encouraged others interested in flying to practice, study, and learn from people who are experienced.
“If anybody is interested in flying but doesn’t see it as something attainable, I would just say that it is definitely something that you can do if you’re willing to commit to it,” she said. As for the experience of flying a plane solo for the first time, Caroline said it was indescribable.
“It’s a whole different world,” she said. “It makes you feel like your problems are small, seeing everything from so high up. And everything that I worry about with school and sports, it just all goes away, and I’m not worried about it anymore.”

“Tell Your Story” In Agriculture: You Just Never Know What Could Go Viral
It’s something you’ve likely heard before and something I often preach; as a keynote speaker, writer, online influencer and more for agriculture.
Back in December, I spoke at the Nation Agriculture Aviation Association (NAAA) national conference in Knoxville. I was scheduled to be the keynote Tuesday morning and had a direct flight booked from Orlando to Knoxville Sunday night on Frontier Airlines to get there. The flight was delayed, delayed, and - you guessed itcanceled.
Frontier Airlines wasn’t very helpful and have done away with their customer service phone number! How crazy is that? They sent us all to an insanely long “customer service” line full of hundreds of frustrated passengers, where we learned the next flight out wasn’t for another 48 hours later! (Tuesday night.)
Well, that wasn’t going to work. I had to get there to speak at the conference! So, I went to the front of the line and politely suggested: why not just put us on a bus or in a van to get to Knoxville? It’s only 10-12 hours, and we could wake up there! Delta Airlines had taken me by shuttle once to another airport when a similar situation occurred.
“Well, we aren’t Delta Airlines,” she said smugly. “We have to wait for a supervisor.”
The supervisor never showed up. Many people couldn’t wait those TWO DAYS to get to where they needed to be, and you could see the tension run thick through the customer crowd. When I made the suggestion, fellow passenger Amy Sadd overheard me, thought it was a good idea, and yelled to the crowd, “OKAY, HERE’S THE DEAL! Some of us are talking about renting a bus or van. Meet us over here in the corner if you’re serious about joining!”
B 22 | agairupdate.com UNITED STATES
About a dozen people showed up, and we all started brainstorming. Other flight options were challenging, expensive and inconvenient. We ended up walking down to the rental car area as a group where passenger Carlos Cordero found us a 15-passenger van. For about $60 a person, he and Amy offered to drive us there as we all split the van cost.
Fellow passenger Alanah Story documented our journey on TikTok, and we started driving. 13 people, and the luggage fit perfectly! As we continued driving the 652-mile drive to Knoxville, we watched her TikTok video go viral in real time! People were creating plots, cracking jokes, and picking their favorite characters or “spirit animals.” Everyone in the comments could relate to at least one of us in that van, even though we were all very different - we got along great!
Our three-part video series has gone viral - with approximately six million views, over one million “likes,” and over 20,000 comments on Alanah’s TikTok videos - not to mention my channels and the mainstream media’s channels.
Which mainstream media, you might ask? We ended up going so viral; the story has been heard around the world. From major TV and radio outlets in the US, Canada, New Zealand, Mexico, Spain, the UK, and more… our schedules have been PACKED with interviews. We’ve been featured in People magazine, the Today Show, Inside Edition, the Jennifer Hudson Show, Daily Blast LIVE, NewsNation, Bored Panda, NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, the Washington Post, Southern Living, and more. Major movie and TV show producers in NYC and Hollywood are even reaching out to us to turn it into a movie, possibly! ➤

Mabry I. Anderson An Insider’s History of Agricultural Aviation
Foreword
When I hopped into my S Model Bonanza on May 1, 1967, to fly to Washington, D.C., and become Executive Director of the National Aerial Applicators Association, it was after having spent fourteen years selling agricultural chemicals to crop dusters from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. By this time, these fellows were a curious mix of characters. Many of the older ones

had been flight instructors during World War II and in Korea; the younger ones were often farmers' sons. Their number dwindled from 40,000 to about 8,000, primarily because it was a tough, demanding, and almost a "roundthe-clock" business. There were still a lot of old-timers around, who had started their businesses in the 1920s and 1930s.
B 26 | agairupdate.com UNITED STATES
My adventures with them, which were many, taught me that the industry was "people-oriented," more of an art than a science, and certainly an "Industry of Innovators."
During my first days in Washington, one of the persons who contacted me was Mabry Anderson, of Clarksdale, Mississippi, who operated a sizable agricultural flying firm known as Mississippi Valley Aircraft Service. A serious problem existed for the crop dusting industry in the cotton growing regions where the U.S. Department of Agriculture was more or less forcing farmers to plant their crop in the fourfour skip pattern rather than solid or in two-one. This practice was bad for production and certainly bad for the utilization of aircraft. Between the two of us, we managed to get USDA to let the growers go back to the two-one pattern. It was Mabry's writing ability, coupled with his intimate knowledge of ag aviation that finally convinced those in charge.
So, it became immediately obvious to me that Mabry was one person who could do justice to a "historical perspective" of the agricultural aviation industry and it didn't take long to find many others who shared my view!
We asked, we cajoled, we threatened, we begged, and finally cut a deal to publish in serial form a book in our Association's magazine, "The World of Agricultural Aviation." I made him promise to put his work in book form for all to enjoy. As you can see, it took some few years to get the job done. But, then, you have to remember that it is a tough job to capture the spirit and the heart of a gentle giant made up of so many fascinating and diverse personalities, especially since Mabry had to rely a great deal on his own experiences and memories, plus the anecdotes of others.
All of these people, including "Sonny" himself, as Mabry is known to most of his friends, had several things in common: their courage, their patriotism, their work ethic, their belief in a Supreme Being, and their love of flying and machines. To me, Low and Slow is a remarkable verbal painting of the life and times of the people who have dedicated their lives to America's great food and fiber production system and to the health and well-being of our nation!

Prologue
Agricultural aviation, originally known as “crop dusting,” is a relatively new science, dating back to 1921. Nevertheless, compiling a reasonably accurate history of its development is a monumental task, due to singular factors not generally associated with a widespread, prospering industry. Among them are a severe shortage of cohesive, written records; many technical developments by widely scattered individuals, rather than through planned group effort; poor distribution of advances in the art, resulting in thousands of hours of duplicated effort; and people motivated by the desire to fly rather than by economic ambition.
As a result of these and other factors, more “hangar legends” were created than documented. And, in sifting through the evidence that does exist, it is extremely difficult to separate fact from fiction.
Fortunately, some favorable circumstances do exist. Notably, many of the real pioneers are still alive and can be interviewed “eyeball to eyeball.” Many of these people are
personal friends of long standing, who have allowed us to do just this. Excellent cooperation has been received from firms and individuals, from every section of the country, who played a part in the development of the industry. Invaluable material, including photographs, personal documents, rare printed matter, yellowed newspaper clippings, and other memorabilia, has been supplied which makes it possible to compile a reasonably accurate history.
Unfortunately, in an undertaking of this scope, things that should be said are invariably omitted, and individuals who contributed greatly to the industry are overlooked. To include absolutely everything and everyone would obviously be an impossible task, and for this the author is sorry. The author is grateful and sincerely thankful to those who do not receive due recognition for their part in making the agricultural flying industry the vital, essential, and altogether fascinating business that it is today. Fly low and slow and keep your wheels out of the cotton!

Doing Well in Tocantins, Brazil
by Bill Lavender
For this particular trip to Brazil, I visited the state of Tocantins for the first time. Tocantins is in a subtropical, northern region of Brazil. It is the newest of 26 Brazilian states. Over 35 years ago, the state used to be a part of Goias. I entered the state by airline, arriving at the capital city of Palmas. From there, Gina Hickmann, my Brazilian representative, and I traveled by car 200 kilometers west to the city of Lagoa da Confusão where I visited two successful ag operators.
This article focuses on Foliar Aviação Agrícola, owned by brothers and pilots Cristiano and Eduardo Juliani.
Foliar is a large ag aviation company with 12 ag planes, including the first P2 Thrush to be delivered in Brazil. Things were not always this way, and success came after much hard work and persistence.
Aviation has always been in the brothers' lives, as their father, Alberi Domingos Juliani, was an ag-pilot in Itaqui, Rio Grande do Sul (RS). Cristiano and Eduardo loaded for him as teenagers and learned to fly with him. Cristiano received his pilot's license in 1999. Eduardo received his pilot's license in 2000.
A 32 | agairupdate.com
In 2004, the brothers decided to look for new opportunities, choosing another region of the country to work. They went to Querência, Mato Grosso, and formed Foliar Aviação Agrícola to set up an operation for spraying and flew there for four years, initially operating an Ipanema EMB-201A They also flew in the Lagoa da Confusão between seasons in Mato Grosso. Eduardo had already lived and flown in both states.
With the increase in crop areas, the offer for work, and the potential for better ag-flying conditions, in 2008, they moved Foliar's base to the area of Lagoa da Confusão making it their primary base of operation. During these years, two Cessna Ag Trucks were added. And each year (season), Foliar would add another Ipanema until the fleet grew to seven or eight Ipanemas.
In 2013, Foliar bought its first Thrush aircraft, powered by a P&WC PT6A-34AG. Foliar owns three PT6A-34AG Thrushes, one GE powered Thrush, one GE Thrush for spares, one EMB-201A, five EMB-202As and one museum exhibit-quality, fully airworthy and functional 1974 Grumman G-164A Ag-Cat. ➤

They operate from a recently extended runway, from 1200 meters to 1600 meters bearing the name of the partners. The company has ten pilots hired for the 11 actively spraying ag-aircraft. However, Foliar's aircraft operate from over 70 airstrips around the area where it provides ag aviation services. Although both Cristiano and Eduardo have flown ag for over 15 years, today they are busy managing Foliar. The company has a strong family administration. Cristiano's wife, Márdioli, a lawyer, assists with the company's legal work. And the partner's sister, Jaqueline, tends to the company's administrative duties. ➤

The Thrush aircraft are outfitted with Transland's CP nozzles, while Travicar's Electrostatic System (ES) is used in the "summer" wet season. Winter is called the dry season, with little reference to temperatures.
Flying is done year-round. Foliar also uses Travicar's hydraulic nozzles primarily for rice work. For soybean work, Travicar's rotary atomizers are used.
During the season, Foliar will dedicate one-half the aircraft fleet to dry work and one-half to wet applications. The aircraft will fly approximately 400-600 hours each year. Dry applications on rice are about 25% of the applications applying 44% urea at 50-60 kg/ ha, or a blended fertilizer of 30-030 at 100 kg/ha for two to three applications. ➤

Rice work starts in November and stops at the end of March or the first of April. Eighty percent of Foliar's work is over rice. Of those applications, 25% are dry, and 75% are liquid applications. Soybean, black beans and corn applications make up the remaining 20% of the work and are treated from April - October. This allows for year-round flying for Foliar.
Foliar Aviação Agrícola is another Brazilian ag-aviation success story. Eighteen years ago, two brothers, Cristiano, Eduardo and his wife carved out a business in a new, almost remote area of Brazil, expanding from one Ipanema to a fleet of 12 ag-aircraft; with a progressive outlook to the future by buying the first P2 Thrush to operate in Brazil.

NTSB REPORTS Accident Synopses
NTSB Identification: CEN22LA408
Location: Murray, Nebraska
Date: August 25, 2022,
Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-602
Injuries: None
The pilot reported that there had been light rain in the morning prior to the flight and when he took off from the turf airstrip to conduct an aerial application flight, the turf was wet from the rain. Following applying fertilizer to a nearby cornfield, the pilot returned to the airstrip to land. After the main landing gear and tailwheel touched down and as the pilot applied brakes to steer, the airplane skidded, and the right wing struck cornstalks in the adjacent field. The airplane then ground-looped and rolled over. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage and left wing and aileron. The pilot reported that there were no other preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation, and that there were no mechanical malfunctions with the brake system.
Probable Cause and Findings — The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s failure to maintain airplane control during landing resulting in an impact with crop and a subsequent ground-loop. Contributing was the wet turf airstrip.
NTSB Identification: ERA22LA206
Location: Lake Apopka, Florida
Date: April 26, 2022
Aircraft: Bell 206
Injuries: Minor
The pilot of the helicopter departed the landing zone to conduct an aerial application flight over a lake. He stated that he established course on his spray line but “lost
sight of everything looking forward due to the glare off the water and the sun position.” He recalled having no depth perception when he looked down at the water and could not recall the helicopter impacting the water but recalled a momentary shudder followed by the helicopter coming to rest inverted. The helicopter’s fuselage, main and tail rotor blades were substantially damaged during the impact. The pilot reported that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures of the helicopter that would have precluded normal operation.
Probable Cause and Findings — The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: A collision with water following a loss of visual reference to the water surface due to sun glare.
NTSB Identification: ERA22LA209
Location: Oakland, Florida
Date: April 26, 2022
Aircraft: GARLICK HELICOPTERS INC OH- 58A+
Injuries: Minor
The pilot of the helicopter was performing aerial application operations and had sprayed one load early that morning, then returned for his second load. While on the ground, operations were halted because another company helicopter had crashed into the water they were conducting operations over. Following that accident, a safety briefing was held with the pilots, and they were instructed to maintain constant communications with the loader truck. They resumed spray operations and later that afternoon the pilot noted that it was difficult to judge his height above the water and advised another company pilot via radio of that fact. He further described that the water was “like a mirror,” which hampered his
depth perception. Later that evening, during a final application pass while he was looking down at the GPS, the helicopter impacted the water. The helicopter’s fuselage, main, and tail rotor blades were substantially damaged during the impact. Following the accident the pilot indicated that there were no mechanical deficiencies of the helicopter that would have precluded normal operation.
Probable Cause and Findings — The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s decision to continue the low-altitude aerial application flight over water conditions that degraded his depth perception, which resulted in an inadvertent collision with the water.
NTSB Identification: ERA22LA255
Location: Pemberton Township, New Jersey
Date: June 1, 2022
Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-400A
Injuries: None
The pilot reported that on final approach, he “started the flare too late,” which resulted in a “high bounce.” He attempted to recover, however the airplane “bounce[d]” again. The pilot initiated a go around, but with the “high angle of attack” of the airplane, he “lost control.” The airplane veered off the side of the runway and impacted a ditch, which sheared off the main landing gear, and resulted in substantial damage to the fuselage. The pilot reported no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
Probable Cause and Findings — The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s improper landing flare, which resulted in a hard, bounced landing and a subsequentloss of control.

NTSB Identification: CEN21LA225
Location: Ulysses, Kansas
Date: May 18, 2021
Aircraft: Bell OH58A Aircraft
Injuries: Fatal
The pilot was performing aerial application operations when the helicopter collided with a power line and subsequently impacted terrain. The pilot was fatally injured. The accident occurred during the pilot’s 21st pass over the field that day, and the pilot had been maneuvering to avoid the wire numerous times prior to the accident. Examination of the helicopter revealed no anomalies that would have precluded normal operation. The circumstances of the accident are consistent with the pilot’s failure to maintain clearance from the power line during the aerial application flight.
Probable Cause and Findings — The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s failure to maintain clearance from a power line during the aerial application flight, which resulted in collision with the power line and subsequent impact with terrain.
NTSB Identification: CEN22LA287
Location: Newport, Arkansas
Date: June 20, 2022
Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-602
Injuries: None
According to the pilot, while attempting to depart from a turf runway with a third load of fertilizer and ¾’s tab of fuel in each tank, the airplane lifted off the ground and was only one to two feet in the air when it settled back down. The left landing gear struck a berm at the end of the runway that was hidden by tall grass and separated from the airplane. The pilot reduced the weight by dropping the fertilizer and returned to land. The airplane touched down on the right main landing gear and tail wheel and the pilot kept the left wing up as long as possible.
The left wing and fuselage sustained substantial damage. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
Probable Cause and Findings — The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s failure to maintain clearance from obstructed terrain during takeoff.
NTSB Identification: CEN22LA340
Location: Stewart, Minnesota
Date: July 25, 2022
Aircraft: WEATHERLY AVIATION CO INC Injuries: None
The pilot reported that he was spraying a corn field and had descended back toward the field to make his next application pass. During the pass, he underestimated the height of the corn and the airplane settled more than expected. The main landing gear struck the corn, the airplane veered to the left, and the airplane impacted the ground. The engine separated and the airplane continued to spin to the left before it came to rest upright. The airplane sustained substantial damage to both wings and the empennage. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
Probable Cause and Findings — The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s failure to maintain adequate clearance from crops during an agricultural flight.
NTSB Identification: CEN22LA342
Location: East Grand Forks, Minnesota
Date: July 21, 2022,
Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-502 Injuries: None
The pilot reported that, while maneuvering to apply chemical to a field at low altitude,
the top of the vertical stabilizer struck a set of power lines. The pilot reported that “the rudder was hammed and [he] had no rudder control.” The pilot made a forced landing in a wheat field. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the vertical stabilizer. The pilot reported no preaccident failures or malfunctions with the airplane before the collision with the power lines that would have precluded normal operations.
Probable Cause and Findings — The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s failure to maintain clearance from the power lines during a low-level application pass.
NTSB Identification: CEN22LA345
Location: Ithaca, Nebraska
Date: July 28, 2022
Aircraft: ROBINSON HELICOPTER COMPANY R44 II
Injuries: None
The pilot was enroute to the next field he would spray and used a handheld GPS unit to navigate. When he finished imputing information into the GPS, he looked up and saw power lines across his flight path. The pilot pulled up on the collective and cyclic to climb; however, the helicopter struck the upper power line. The pilot entered an autorotation, during which the pilot felt unusual vibrations, but had full authority of the flight controls. The helicopter settled into a mature stand of corn, which resulted in structural damage to the tail boom and main rotor system. The pilot stated that he should have climbed to 500 ft agl before he used his GPS to navigate to the next field.
Probable Cause and Findings — The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s failure to maintain clearance from power lines during low level aerial application operations due to a distraction.

Jeremy Knibbs in the Turbine Brave.
First Year in the Saddle
by Ted Delange
Jeremy Knibbs was brought up on a farm in southeast Saskatchewan in the great grain belt that extends well down into the United States. As a youngster, there was ample opportunity to view cropdusters in action from spring preemergent to fall desiccation operations. While his interest in aviation was always there, a full-time commitment came a bit later in life.
“I had worked as a journeyman carpenter through my 30s, and basically, I was looking for a career change. A friend and I were doing some roofing on a farmhouse, and it just so happened there was an ag airplane working the field right next to the homestead. I remember saying, “holy cow!” as we watched the pilot smoothly zoom in and out of the field so low that you could easily see his sunglasses. That just helped cement my desire to get into aviation full-time.”
Fast Tracking in the Pilots Lane
For those interested in an aviation career, the process can initially seem very complicated, with several options and decisions to be made through the many stages of training.
“When I was thinking seriously of becoming a pilot, many questions arose as to what the best route was, what’s it going to cost, and where I could get some first-rate training. I knew that a lot of commitment and studies would be required. But I bit the bullet and started my PPL at the Estevan Flying Club in 2020, with my first solo on July 27 of that year.
Our daughter was born in March of 2020, just when COVID hit, and so with all that was happening, I hunkered down in the books and tried to get everything done as quickly as possible. I continued my flight training towards a CPL
A 44 | agairupdate.com
in Estevan, taking online studies with Harv’s Air out of Manitoba and doing some simulator time at the Regina Flying Club.”
Building Time in a Taildragger
“Because I wanted to get my commercial rating and wasn’t looking at airlines, I knew I needed to get tailwheel time because I was looking more in the line of cropdusting or aerial survey. So, I purchased a Piper PA-20 Pacer and did the majority of my training in it. That also necessitated finding a Transport Canada inspector who could do CPL check rides in a taildragger, which took me to Yorkton.”
Weather Demons
There’s an old adage about the weather on the prairies. If you don’t like what you see, wait a couple of hours, and everything will change. Sometimes for good, sometimes for the not-so-good.
“Initially, we couldn’t get the weather to cooperate for my CPL ride, and we had to schedule it a number of times from week to week. It was a bit frustrating, but eventually, we were able to do the ride, but we had to use a 172 because the radios in the Pacer packed up just as we were taxiing out.”
On To Ag Flying
“Once I had by CPL, it was off to North Battleford to take a comprehensive ag aviation course from Battlefords Airspray. Again, the weather wasn’t very cooperative, but eventually, it settled down, and we successfully completed the program by the beginning of May. I already had a job lined up near my hometown and had worked as a mixer/loader the year before, so I was very familiar with aerial application operations.”
First Steps
Training in any industry is one thing, but getting down to the actual work is another. Whether carpentry, welding, or agriculture, there is always a big step from classroom to fulltime employment.
“One of my first jobs as a new ag pilot was to pick up a Piper PA-25 Pawnee for Brigden Ag Air and bring it to their airstrip. I was very fortunate because before spraying operations commenced, I could spend some time coming up to speed on the Pawnee and its dispersal gear and GPS navigation system.
I remember I was pretty nervous with the first load of chemicals, like going on your first solo again. The area has a lot of obstacles like pumpjacks and powerlines, so it was a bit of an eye opener for me as it seemed like everywhere I was going, there were obstacles of one sort or another.”
Solid Training Pays Great Dividends
For anyone who has worked through PPL, CPL, and ag pilot training courses, there is a lot to learn and a lot to remember. But the hard work and excellent training serve as a solid basis once literally in the field.
“I went back to my training and did the best I could trying to fly the Pawnee with the ball centered and on airspeed. I stuck to the checklist and tried to develop a routine and get into a groove, which took a little while, but eventually, things started to smooth out.
One of the first challenges regarding track guidance was transitioning from the Satloc system I used in training to the Pawnee’s Ag Nav system. I spent a lot of time on the ground going over the new Ag Nav procedures, which paid off once we got into actual spraying operations.”
A Fraternity of Wings
For anyone entering a new business, the difference between success and failure on the job is often directly related to the support novices receive as they learn the ropes. ➤
agairupdate.com | A 45 INTERNATIONAL
“One thing that really helped me get into a working groove was that everyone was open to discuss any questions I might have. I had the phone numbers of the instructors at Battlefords and my fellow coursemates, and it seemed like everyone just wanted to help, especially my new employers at Brigden Ag Air. I never felt any pressure to fly when I didn’t think conditions were suitable, and all the equipment they had was top-notch. You could tell from the get-go that the emphasis was on safety.”
A Few Surprises
With any new job comes a steep learning curve, along with the need to adjust to issues or circumstances that have not been directly covered in the training syllabus.
“One of the first surprises for me was the number of spectators you get when spraying a field, who find it fascinating to watch an ag airplane in action.
Another surprising thing I found was how many decisions have to be made on each flight. Are winds within acceptable parameters? Is it too hot or cold both for the application as well as for aircraft performance? Are there neighboring susceptible crops? What obstacles are apt to cause problems? Does the load size fit the field size? Am I carrying
too big a load for the temperature and RH? It feels like your helmet is on fire, particularly when you are just starting to develop a constant routine that will make the job safe and effective.”
Looking Ahead
In the ag aviation business, there is a gradual evolution from smaller aircraft to large and more sophisticated machines. However, the focus is still the same: do the job safely and effectively.
“I’m looking forward to switching office seats from the Pawnee to the Turbo Brave already at the Brigden strip. If there is one element that stood out throughout my first year of ag flying, it is the vital importance of keeping a “Safety First” attitude in the air and on the ground.
As an experienced pilot said to me, ag flying is simple. Just ensure you have the same number of landings as takeoffs. And if something doesn’t feel right, don’t ignore that stubborn feeling. Ensure you’re not missing something or there is an issue that needs your full attention.
It was a great first year as an ag pilot, and I can’t wait to climb back into the saddle for year two!”

Seat Wanted
I’m 36 years old and looking for mentorship/employment as a first-year pilot and/or loader. I’ve been married for 14 years and have two children. I currently hold a job as a comptroller and IT manager for a distributor and have held that position for the past 12 years. I’m ready to get out from behind the desk and into a seat. I’ve been flying since 2009 and have around 500TT. I recently purchased a 260hp Pawnee, which I put around 120hrs on and have now sold. I’m working on finishing up my commercial and scheduled to do lightbar and turbine transition training. I spent the bulk of the 2022 season driving 60-100 miles to observe at the local ag operation every morning before work at my current job. I’m a dedicated and hard worker. I’m ready to learn and take instruction. Three One Eight - 455One Two Two Three - Jake H.
Experienced pilot looking ahead for the 2023 season and beyond. I am a highly proven and productive 802 driver with the numbers and references to support it. I’ve worked 15 seasons, no crashes, looking for a professional well-managed operation to sink my teeth into and earn my living. Feel free to email me at: apotter15@gmail.com
