FROM THE COCKPIT

Bill Lavender bill@agairupdate.com

Age and Technique I am often reminded of my age, especially since I am about to enter into my seventh decade. There are many reasons to be somewhat dismayed at approaching 70 this year. However, there are more reasons to be thankful to my God, family and friends for such a joyous and abundant life. Some of these reasons can only be appreciated with elderly age. Yeah, I wrote “elderly”, or senior, or whatever you want to call it. A very distinct advantage to being a member of this prestigious club is the ability to reflect on one’s experiences. This is an earned privilege that comes with age. A prime example is decision making. Not in every instance, but usually the older pilot will make better decisions with his flying techniques. The younger crowd may say that the older pilot has lost his nerve, when the reality is he simply flies smarter based on experience. There is no denying with age comes a reduction in reaction time. But, that can be compensated for largely by slowing down. Even for younger pilots that are often mission oriented, speed is not the most important element of a successful, good ag-pilot. Bringing home the aircraft without damage and an expertly applied application are the most important items. Besides, just how much time is really lost with 60-second turns

A 6 | agairupdate.com

versus 30-second turns? Turns only make up about one-third of the time it takes to apply a load, generally. If you are still relatively new at the game of ag-flying, say only 10 or so years and a few thousand hours, don’t worry. The way you fly from this day forward will determine if you live long enough to join this elite group of aged agpilots. There is absolutely nothing more true than the old saying, “There are bold pilots and there are old pilots. But there are no old, bold pilots.” In NAAA’s May 30 Fly Safe Campaign newsletter, a topic was covered that I have more than once commented on with little or no acceptance from AgAir Update readers. And, that is flying the PT6A ag-plane in flight idle versus ground idle. I fully realize that more ag-pilots fly in ground idle and I understand their reasoning, basically land shorter. For more than 25 years, I have evaluated numerous ag-aircraft of every possible description that one can imagine. On more than one occasion with the aircraft being evaluated, its engine was not properly rigged for flight and idle conditions. This can present an unnerving problem for the first time landing a strange agplane.

INTERNATIONAL

The solution to this problem that you may not know exists until on final approach, is to fly the aircraft in flight idle. It is argued that the aircraft cannot be landed as short. OK, maybe, just how much runway do you need to land? In every case that I know, anywhere a takeoff can be made at gross weight or beyond, is plenty of runway to land empty. Having stated that, the pilot best lands a loaded plane in flight idle! I am fully aware that thousands of successful landings are made by ag-pilots in ground idle. But, to deny there may come a time when you need full power immediately is begging for trouble. Simply ease (and carefully) the throttle back behind the stop, tickling beta. That huge prop becomes a very effective brake. Don’t tickle beta too much, or you won’t be laughing when the aircraft “falls” out from under you. Yeah, I know that full beta and using reverse to slow the aircraft is bad technique potentially causing dings on the prop. Land slower and find a happy medium, but land in flight idle using at least 68% Ng. Until next month, Keep Turning…

Thrush Aircraft Receives Type Certificate for 510P2+ Factory set to debut new models to the Ag Aviation market.

by Graham Lavender photos by Ryan Mason

Thrush Aircraft recently announced a major milestone in their development program for new models. In June, the company received the Type Certificate for the 510P2+, a process that has taken over a year to accomplish. In 2012, under different ownership, the company launched a new 500-gallon aircraft powered by the GE H80 turboprop engine. The airframe/engine combination was an instant success, with a newly redesigned engine mount that extended the nose and provided exceptional balance in the flight envelope plus spar caps that had a 60,000-hour life. However, lack of support from the engine manufacturer proved difficult to overcome long term. A 10 | agairupdate.com

Fast forward a little under a decade - Thrush has now celebrated the certification of the 510P2+, a feat that was accomplished after a complete relaunch of the company. Thrush embraced the design success of the 510G airframe and added multiple engineering improvements, as well as the PT6A-140AG turboprop engine, which boasts 867 shp. The P2+ comes standard with a four-blade prop. The Thrush 510P2+ engine is positioned on slightly modified H80 engine mounts which extend the nose to improve stability and performance over the 510P model. Additional baggage/tool space is also available in the front of the aircraft. Other design changes in the 510P2+ are

improved air intake filter arrangements that provide quick access to the filter, stainless steel and aluminum hard lines for fuel and oil (eliminating the need to replace hoses in service), and a new electrical harness in the engine compartment. A new air plenum sealing feature that uses “P” seals will provide improved and efficient intake sealing has also been added. The 510P2+ has new data plates and is available in a single cockpit configuration. The dual-cockpit configuration is expected to be certified in the fall of 2022. The PT6-34AG powered P2 single cockpit is the next configuration to be certified. The P2 will utilize the same airframe and propeller.

Design concepts were well on the drawing board before the 2020 Ag Aviation Expo in Savannah when Thrush President Mark McDonald held a meeting with the array of Thrush dealers in attendance to garner general feedback and suggestions on the upcoming aircraft. Currently, there are nine Thrush dealers around the globe: ASI Jet (US), MidContinent Aircraft (US), North Star Aviation (US), Yorkton Aircraft (Canada), Aerotec (Argentina), Thrush do Brasil (Brazil), Statewide Aviation (Australia), Orsmond Aviation (South Africa) and Africair (Africa). Final design of the new models began shortly after the convention followed by fabrication and assembly activities. ➤ agairupdate.com | A 11

Flight testing on the 510P2+ started in September of 2021 and completed in June of 2022. As of this writing, over 50 firm orders and dealer slots have been reserved for the new airframes. Dealers are taking orders for those slots now. Thrush expects to increase production in the latter part of 2022 and throughout 2023. With this increase in production also comes an increase in support. According to McDonald, “The new Thrush Aircraft cares about your aircraft from the moment we begin to build it until you retire it.” In addition to the two new airframe certifications, Thrush Aircraft is also introducing a conversion program for owners of the 510G, currently powered by the GE H80 turboprop. Owners will have the option of selecting a new PT6A-34AG engine or one that is owner-provided that must meet specific build specs and be within TBO. The conversion process will take approximately 60 - 75 days to complete. Airframe refurbishment and annual inspections are also available during this process. The conversions began in November of 2021. Once the type certificate for the P2+’s sister ship, the P2, is approved, international Thrush Service Centers will also perform the conversions.

The 510P2+ brings impressive performance data. The aircraft has a standard 228-gallon fuel tank and boasts a maximum takeoff weight of 10,500 lbs. Maneuvering speed is 158 mph, never-exceed speed is 186 mph, and the maximum flap extension speed is 157 mph. The singlecockpit version has two baggage compartments rated at 100 lbs and 60 lbs. The useful load is approximately 5,800 pounds, depending on the configuration. The 510P2+ has 117 more horsepower than the earlier model 510P and a lighter empty weight. Thrush factory test pilot Terry Humphrey, who has flown every model of Thrush aircraft, comments, “Pilots are going to be taken back by the performance of this airplane. The abundance of power, coupled with the overall balance of the extended airframe, makes the 510P2+ a sports car, but with solid, Thrush flying characteristics. It is one of the best aircraft I have ever flown.” The 510P2+ also has a newly debuted 4-blade Hartzell propeller. The 510P2+’s takeoff RPM is only 1900 and, during general working conditions, is reduced to 1700. This, combined with an overall 103” diameter, dramatically slows the prop’s tip speed and equates to a quieter airplane. ➤ agairupdate.com | A 13

INTERNATIONAL

The demands of obtaining new aircraft certifications (and an additional certification for the 510P2 nearly complete) and rebuilding a company haven’t prevented Thrush Aircraft from focusing on its larger airframe product line, the 710P. The 710P program is slated to have many improvements in the upcoming years.

A 14 | agairupdate.com

Even amidst a launch of the “new” Thrush Aircraft and all the nuances that accompany it, Thrush has emerged with a new model aircraft that boasts excellent performance and flying characteristics. More type certificates are on the immediate horizon, and the future of the tried and true Thrush airframe is a solid one.

Sana Agro Aérea, 45 Years Of Changes, Adaptation And Innovation By Ernesto Franzen Rui Nuno Vasconcelos de Couto Cardoso learned to fly while serving his home country, Portugal, with the Portuguese Air Force during the Portuguese Colonial War, which raged from 1961 to 1974 in Angola and Mozambique. Rui started to fly ag during lulls in the hostilities, treating sugarcane in African farms. With the war’s end in 1974, Rui immigrated to Brazil and flew for Aero Agrícola Caiçara in São Paulo for two seasons. Then he founded SANA (an acronym for “Serviço Aéreo Na Agricultura”) in the city of Leme in partnership with the owner of a local sugar mill called Rui de Souza Queiroz. This partnership lasted until Queiroz died in 2004. Rui organized his company according to his military background, demanding the same high standards in the maintenance of its fleet as the air forces used to do. For this, Sana has a certified maintenance shop (CHE 8306-04) that attends exclusively to its fleet. Initially, its services were limited to applying fertilizers on sugarcane, followed shortly afterward by herbicide A 18 | agairupdate.com

applications. The company was growing at the rate of one aircraft (all Ipanemas) each year until 1982, when while buying its sixth ag plane, sugarcane growers changed to a new liquid fertilizer that was injected into the soil dismissing aerial applications. With 80% percent of the sugarcane work gone overnight, a change was required to keep the company alive. Rui opened two new bases in the neighboring cities of Tapes and Camaquã, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, to fly the sprawling rice farms in the area. This kept the company in good standing until 1986 when the Brazilian government imported large quantities of rice from India in an attempt to keep food prices down. It was time for a change again, and Rui realized a new agricultural frontier was being open in the then underdeveloped state of Mato Grosso. In 1993, he opened a new Sana base in Primavera do Leste, today one of the main hubs for Brazilian ag aviation, where he built the first hangar on the local airport. Even a radial Thrush was added to its fleet during this period. And in 1995, Sana was one of the first Brazilian ag operations to embrace GPS technology. ➤

After some good seasons, soybean prices fell 50% between 1997 and 1999, bankrupting many Sana customers and leaving it with thousands of acres treated and unpaid for. Sana then turned its focus back to São Paulo, as new technologies applied to sugarcane – ripeners, insecticides, foliar fertilizers – meant the return of aerial application on this crop. Another change comes to Sana with a new generation: in 2005, agronomist Max Zenker joined the company and started expanding forestry applications, with a new Sana base in Martinho Campos, state of Minas Gerais. And in 2006, Rui’s son, Bruno Vasconcelos, a graduate of the Getulio Vargas Foundation – São Paulo School of Business Administration (FGV-EAESP), joined the company to develop and introduce a quality management program in the company. Another first for Sana in 2006 was the application of mosquito larvicide on the margins of the Pinheiros River, right in the middle of the urban area of São Paulo, the biggest city in Brazil. This was done to fight a dengue outbreak in the city and required complex coordination with city authorities, blocking traffic in some of the busiest expressways in the city and air traffic control, as it also happens to be the most congested airspace in Brazil. It made big news in the national media. A 20 | agairupdate.com

Bruno Vasconcelos quickly realized that the lack of proper administrative controls and the lack of formal customer contracts made it virtually impossible to receive unpaid services. These problems were a factor in the three big crises the company had since its beginning. He quickly started working to address these problems, and according to him, in 2008, Sana was the first ag operation in Brazil to receive ISO 9001 certification. The company started working through standard administrative processes as it prepared to deal with more extensive and more demanding customers. These new times, with the prospect of big forestry jobs brought by Max Zenker and the new management processes brought by Bruno, emboldened Rui to double Sana ‘’s fleet, so in 2008 he financed the acquisition of mode five Ipanemas through the BNDES bank and Embraer - adding to two of the original aircraft that were still being paid. Ironically, in September of 2008, as the company received its 10th Ipanema, Lehman Brothers Bank went broke in the US, triggering the 2008 recession. Many customers canceled their application services, and instead of the expected doubling of revenue, Sana saw it reduced by 10% in 2009. As Sana dived into a severe new crisis, Rui was diagnosed with serious cancer and retired from the company in September 2009, passing away in February 2010. Bruno took over the company, which was in an unprecedented crisis.

INTERNATIONAL

Fortunately, rigorous administration and the quick economic recovery of Brazil allowed Sana to recover in 2010, achieving a business growth of 100% between 2009 and 2012, being mentioned by the prestigious Exame magazine as one of the “250 fastest-growing small and medium companies” in Brazil in August 2013. Sana then converted the Ipanemas in its fleet that didn’t use ethanol fuel yet, and in 2014 it received a Sustainable Ag Operation Certification from three federal universities. In 2016, Max Zenker became a partner of Sana. And in 2017, Chief Pilot Leonardo Ongarato established the company’s Operational Standards, including flight planning, satellite strip evaluation, customer relations, aircraft operation, drift mitigation, emergency procedures, and fire fighting operations. Leonardo Ongarato is an ANAC certified ag pilot flight examiner, and he is in charge of the BFR for Sana pilots. A new technological first for Sana in 2018 was the adoption of Travicar’s Application Control with automatic spray on/off, connected to the pump’s fan brake. This allows the pilot to concentrate on flying the aircraft while the GPS systems turn the spray on and off, only treating the previously planned polygon. ➤

SLBGA’s dual cockpit Thrush with Dominica dual cockpit Thrush in background. Is it possible these two aircraft could be for sale?

St. Lucia — Island In Debate Of Ag Aviation

by Bill Lavender With the assistance of Dudley Beek, owner of Jamaican ag operation Dustair, and his son Nigel, traveling in Dustair’s MU-2, AgAir Update launched its Caribbean Excursion from Jamaica one Sunday afternoon, to return a week later after stops in St. Lucia, Martinique, Dominican Republic and Cuba. Dudley and I have been friends since I discovered he had bought my 1200 Viper Thrush from Chuck Stone in the mid1980s. In July of 1997, my wife, Sandy, and I flew from Perry to the Boscobel Airport, near the town of Ochos Rios, A 26 | agairupdate.com

Jamaica for me to fly the Viper Thrush once again, more than ten years since the last time I had flown it (see AAU September 1997). That Viper Thrush, I have often commented, would take off with less runway loaded, than it required to land upon empty, with its huge three-blade DC-3 prop idling up front on the light weight 1975 model Thrush airframe. Since then, Dudley and Nigel have repaid me with a visit to Perry. And now, they were going to be kind enough to escort me through the Islands.

INTERNATIONAL

We departed Jamaica shortly past noon for the plus threehour (almost 1,000 miles) flight over water, no radar, to St. Lucia. The island is on the southern end of the West Indies Islands, just slightly north of Venezuela. We landed at the Vigie International airport, cleared customs, found the hotel and prepared to meet our host the next day. The ex-British island of St. Lucia has a unique arrangement for its banana growers. The growers have formed the St. Lucia Banana Growers Association (SLBGA). The Association is not unlike many farmer groups who operate ag aircraft. The ag plane’s role is only a part of the big picture. In the case of SLBGA, their Turbo Thrush has been in the hangar for two years and is used only on rare occasions. A second Thrush, belonging to the Island of Dominica (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic) was in the hangar for maintenance. Its fate, much like the Thrush at St. Lucia. The dilemma faced by the aerial spraying operation of SLBGA is a so-called demand from consumers in the United Kingdom for banning the use of aerial application altogether, particularly on the bananas they eat. According to SLBGA’s agricultural director, John Medrick, with whom we met, the UK supermarkets advertise in their marketing schemes bananas grown with minimum spraying of any kind and no ag aircraft usage. ➤

John Medrick, Director of Agriculture for St. Lucia Banana Growers Association and the Association’s chief aircraft engineer, Peter Isaac. Not shown, pilot Irvin John, who also is the mayor of the St. Lucia capital city, Castries.

The reality is the Association is made up of 4000 growers on the tiny island, with only 8,000-9,000 acres of bananas in production. About 7,000 of these acres are in an area that can be sprayed by aircraft. Each grower is accessed $0.03 XCD (East Caribbean Dollars = .37 USD) per pound of bananas grown to pay for all of the spraying operations, whether it be aerial or by ground (back pack sprayers). The average production per acre is 7 tons, or $420 XCD ($155.40 USD) per acre collected for all spraying expenses. It would appear, there are more reasons for not using the ag plane than just the UK’s demands. Presently, the policy of SLBGA is to spray the banana plantations 10 times. However, every effort is being made to reduce the number of applications. In a “crisis” situation, the ag plane will be called in. This could be for an outbreak of the dreaded yellow sigatoka disease, there are no signs of black sigatoka on the island. If this “crisis” occurs, most likely it will be between October and December, requiring two or three applications. Applications are made at 1.5 gallons per acre of an oil plus chemical mix. The product is applied with A 28 | agairupdate.com

Micronair’s AU 3000 and AU 5000 units set for 150-micron droplet size. The Thrush takes a 90-foot swath with this arrangement. Most applications are only in the valleys of the island, trying to minimize any drift. It seems the local residents have an aversion to the yellow airplane, but don’t mind the same chemicals being applied by back pack sprayers. How many back sprayers does it take to replace one Turbo Thrush? Jobs? The Turbo Thrush is a 1987 dual cockpit version powered by PT6A-34 engine. Most of the applications are made on the north side of the island flying from the Vigie International airport. Typical loads are 275 gallons, being limited by the high density altitude and terrain. One Turbo Thrush can complete a cycle of the acreage flown by air in about four full working days. However, if the wind reaches 10 knots or the air temperature exceeds 85°F, the applications are stopped. At this time, SLBGA has its Turbo Thrush for sale. It plans to contract with an aerial applicator somewhere in the islands to handle its “crisis” needs. It remains to be seen, if this is a workable solution.

Professional Certification for the Future of Agricultural Aviation: Introducing C-PAASS—Certified Professional Aerial Applicator Safety Steward

“Whatever additional benefits are bestowed upon C-PAASS ag aviators, the program will undoubtedly demonstrate agricultural aviation’s professionalism and positive public image to our customers, regulators and the public we help feed, clothe and protect.”

As the agricultural aviation industry moves from its first century into its second, it faces a strong and increasing demand for fast and effective agricultural input services. It also faces challenges from additional regulations, public input, rising insurance costs, stiffer pesticide label language and competition from technological advances in other facets of agriculture. To meet these challenges, agricultural aviation needs a way to further augment its advancement of safety and application accuracy while also showing our customers, regulators and the public the professional nature of our industry. NAAA’s new Certified-Professional Aerial Applicator Safety Steward (C-PAASS) program, launching in 2023, will fill that very role. Requirements for certification will ensure C-PAASS members are taking part in the best available educational opportunities for agricultural aviation. C-PAASS is by no means a requirement; however, this voluntary program will allow those aerial applicators who strive to constantly educate themselves to better their safety and applications to be recognized for their efforts. With 2023 being the launch year, there will be four requirements for an ag pilot to earn their C-PAASS designation, with additional requirements forthcoming in subsequent years. The 2023 requirements will be as follows:

B 2 | agairupdate.com

1. Annual Membership in NAAA (2023) 2. Annual Membership in a state or regional agricultural aviation association (2023) 3. Annual PAASS (Professional Aerial Applicators’ Support System) attendance (three out of the past three years: 20222023 season, 2021-2022 season, 20202021 season) 4. Biennial Operation S.A.F.E. (Self-regulating Application and Flight Efficiency) participation (one out of the last two years: either 2022 or 2023) These initial certification requirements are based on education and professional opportunities already available to all ag aviators. The PAASS Program has a proven record of reducing accidents and drift incidents. Five years after it hit the stage, the industry saw a 26% drop in drift incidents from drift surveys collected by state pesticide enforcement agencies. And since the first PAASS season in 1998-1999, the ag aviation accident rate (number of accidents per 100,000 hours flown) has dropped by nearly 26%, and the fatal accident rate has dropped by 10%. Astonishingly, this marked reduction in accidents and drift occurrences happened with fewer than half, or 47%, of the agricultural aviation operators and pilots in the U.S. attending the PAASS Program (1,593 attended PAASS before the 2020 season; there are a total of 3,400 ag pilots in the U.S.). And of the 333 accidents that occurred between 2014 and 2020:

UNITED STATES

• 117, or 35%, were from pilots that had not attended PAASS in the prior five years. • 52, or 15.6%, were from pilots that had attended PAASS once in the prior five years. • 41, or 12.3%, were from pilots that had attended PAASS twice in the prior five years. • 39, or 11.7%, were from pilots that attended PAASS three times in the prior five years. • 37, or 11.1%, were from pilots that attended PAASS four times in the prior five years. • 47, or 14.1%, were from pilots that attended PAASS five times in the prior five years. All these stats are a way to say that continuing education works. Continuing education makes you more professional. Professionalism makes you safer in the cockpit. C-PAASS is being launched as the next phase in professionalism, with a goal of increasing participation in existing programs and expanding that participation to new education opportunities to come. Operation S.A.F.E. fly-in clinics offer aerial applicators a chance to verify the accuracy of their aircraft to ensure they are making precise applications that meet the demand of growers as well as protect the environment and the public. Membership in NAAA offers numerous educational and other professional development opportunities, including markedly discounted education sessions at the Ag Aviation Expo, online NAAREF safety and education videos, Fly Safe messages, and a weekly eNewsletter. State and regional associations offer their own education opportunities. Both NAAA and state and regional associations offer leadership development opportunities and roles to help guide the industry into the future. Starting in 2024, an online learning management system (LMS) will become part of C-PAASS. LMS content will be based on previous PAASS modules and sessions offered at NAAA’s annual Ag Aviation Expo. A wide variety of topics will eventually be included in the LMS, including those covered in 14 CFR Part 137 knowledge and skills and those on how to properly set up agricultural aircraft to make on-target applications. The LMS will be used to ensure recurrent training on topics deemed to be critical for the safety and accuracy of aerial applications. Participants will be tested on the presented material to ensure learning retention.

C-PAASS certification will be on a calendar year basis. To remain certified, C-PAASS criteria will need to be renewed annually. There will be an initial annual cost of $100 for certification in 2023. C-PAASS certification is offered solely to individual ag pilots. That means agricultural pilots, both operator and non-operator, can become certified. The operation itself will not be certified but could advertise that all of its pilots are certified. C-PAASS certified aerial applicators can use their certification status to inform regulatory officials and insurance agents and to market to their customers that they have undergone additional training and development to best ensure that they can provide highquality service. This was the impetus for developing C-PAASS—to expand and gain recognition for maximizing professionalism by ultimately receiving additional benefits for being certified to possibly include insurance discounts and more flexibility pertaining to pesticide label language. For instance, some labels already require Operation S.A.F.E. participation to use. It’s possible that in the future C-PAASS certified aerial applicators may be able to apply at lower spray application rates (GPA) or with reduced wind-directional buffer zone distances, etc. Whatever additional benefits are bestowed upon C-PAASS ag aviators, the program will undoubtedly demonstrate agricultural aviation’s professionalism and positive public image to our customers, regulators and the public we help feed, clothe and protect. agairupdate.com | B 3

Don't Risk Your Life! A FlySafe Recap from NAAREF In 2019, an ag aviator ferrying back after completing his application mission decided to buzz his friend, who was working on a wind turbine near his return flight path. He incorrectly identified someone else as his friend and buzzed this technician, who happened to be holding a rope to stabilize a blade during maintenance. The aircrafts right wing struck the rope, throwing the technician through the air and breaking his leg and back. The fallout from this incident led the American Clean Power Association (ACPA) to contact NAAA to complain about the accident and look for ways to prevent it from happening again. They notified NAAA that they were considering pursuing regulatory action aimed at preventing all aerial applications within and nearby wind farms. NAAA explained that this was one errant pilot who was not acting safely, professionally, or within industry quidelines and that we would continue to remind a aviators about safety concerns related to flying in and around wind farms. The incident was a stark reminder of the PAASS motto: "Upon the Performance of Each Rests the Fate of All." One reckless act by a single pilot almost resulted in new regulations for the entire ag aviation industry, There is absolutely no reason to buzz anyone or anything. Every aerial application is a focused mission - deliver the product uniformly and safely on the target crop, forest, or pest. Every action you take in the cockpit should undeterredly hone in on that mission. Buzzing or any other type of reckless flying not required for the mission can only result in negative consequences - a wrecked aircraft, injuries or death for yourself or a bystander, and complaints that can lead to additional regulations. Your mission is focused on controlling the targeted pest. Fly smart, fly safe, fly the application mission.

Helmets Will Save Your Life Reports are once again coming in that many ag aviators are not wearing helmets. While no safety device can

B 4 | agairupdate.com

completely guarantee your survival in an accident, wearing a helmet increases your chances. The trend of not wearing a helmet while working has even been seen with experienced a pilots. The demand for bringing new pilots into the industry means it's even more imperative for experienced pilots to be setting good safety standards. While a helmet cannot always prevent a concussion, it does reduce the severity of a concussion and can prevent more traumatic brain injuries. Your brain "floats" within fluid inside your skull. When your head hits something, it decelerates more rapidly than your brain floating within it. This causes your brain to smash into your skull, injuring it. A helmet works by reducing your head's deceleration rate, thus lowering the force of impact when your brain collides with your skull. A study of 97 fatal aviation accidents that occurred in Alaska from 2004 to 2009 concluded that 33 lives could have been saved by the use of a helmet. A study of U.S. Army helicopter accidents from 1972 to 1988 found that not wearing a helmet increased the risk of sustaining a fatal head injury in a crash by 6.3 times. Reasons cited by ag aviators as to why they don't like to wear helmets include the additional weight, not comfortable, and reduced head movement. Modern aviation helmets virtually eliminate these arguments. They are light weight and comfortable while still providing maximum effectiveness. Please take every precaution you can to prevent an accident. In addition, take advantage of every safety device available to protect you in the event you are involved in an accident. This includes wearing a helmet and ensuring that the chin strap is properly affixed; wearing a fire-resistant flight suit; and strapping in with both a seat belt and shoulder harness. You may have reasons why you don't want to wear a helmet, but how does your family feel about you not doing everything you can to protect yourself? Fly safe and put your helmet on.

CRAYMER’S COUNSEL

Robert Craymer - robertc@covingtonaircraft.com

Fuel Nozzles It is easier to spend a little at a time taking care of potential items that can damage your engine, as opposed to ignoring them and getting hit with a big bill later.

B 6 | agairupdate.com

I was speaking with a customer, and we were discussing how much cheaper it is to do preventative and scheduled maintenance than wait until there is an issue. With a bit of planning and preparation, the care of your engine can be far less “painful.” It is easier to spend a little at a time taking care of potential items that can damage your engine, as opposed to ignoring them and getting hit with a hefty bill later. One preventative/scheduled maintenance item that everyone will need to look at is fuel nozzles and their care. I have been asked many times how often should I have the fuel nozzles looked at? The Pratt & Whitney Canada maintenance manuals provide some guidance, but the answer to

this question is ultimately up to the owner/ operator of the engine. The Periodic Inspection table in the maintenance manual states that fuel nozzle maintenance is based upon the operator’s experience and rejection rate. For operators new to PT6A operation or if fuel quality is an unknown, the manual says to do the preliminary inspection of the fuel nozzles at 200 hours. Then based on the results, you can extend your time out to as much as 400 hours. As you can see, the actual schedule of your maintenance is primarily up to the operator; however, it must be completed between 200 and 400 hours. Many customers I work with prefer to perform their fuel nozzle maintenance in conjunction with their 300hour airframe inspection.

UNITED STATES

When it comes time to remove your fuel nozzles, you will want to identify them. Most engines have a mix of what we recognize as primary and secondary fuel nozzles. Some engines have duplex fuel nozzles, which means each of the 14 nozzles has a primary and secondary side. The primary fuel is delivered during the initial start sequence, followed by the secondary fuel. This process allows for cooler starting temperatures. Each of these nozzles must go into the correct location as identified in the engine maintenance manual to ensure the proper starting fuel sequence. The primary nozzle has a spot weld on the mounting flange near the bolt hole, and the secondary nozzle has no spot weld. Examples of the two fuel nozzles are shown in the accompanying picture. Before removal, you can number the fuel nozzles 1 through 14 to return them to the correct location after processing. As we have discussed, we always look at the engine from the pilot’s perspective. Fuel nozzle numbering happens the same way. We number the nozzle on the top of the engine as number 1, then number to the right, going down and around the engine. The easy way I remember this is that one is at the top, and then you count towards where the ITT connects. Remember, you don’t want to touch the nozzle tips with your bare fingers. Wear gloves and put each nozzle assembly and sheath into a container or plastic bag. This will keep your nozzles safe and organized. ➤

What does fuel nozzle maintenance mean? Initially, a leak check and function test of each fuel nozzle manifold adapter are to be performed. At Covington Aircraft, we handle many exchange/mail-in fuel nozzle sets. Our initial process on all of them is to perform the function check and note any issues we reveal. We are looking for nozzles that might have voids, streaks, or an abnormal spray pattern. If something extreme is observed, we advise the customer of the results and discuss with them the results of their borescope inspection. Next, we process the nozzles and sheaths through approved cleaners. Don’t use unapproved cleaning methods. One can cause damage, and damage means dollars. Post cleaning, we perform another function test and a leak check. We also inspect the cleaned sheaths for wear and fit. During the final function check, we want to ensure the spray pattern of each nozzle is correct. We also watch each tip cut off to ensure it is functioning correctly. The cleaning and inspection processes take time. I know time is the most limited thing any of us have during the heat of the season. One option to reduce downtime is to use exchange kits. These kits usually contain all the seals and gaskets that you need. You need to ensure that you have the correct (primary and secondary) fuel nozzles when installing them. ➤

Typically, you can order these exchange kits in advance and then install them while you remove your current nozzles. Exchange kits keep downtime to a minimum.

The maintenance manual also instructs to perform a borescope inspection with each fuel nozzle maintenance event.

If parts issues are found during the inspections, don’t ignore them. Replacement of the parts is easy, and the cost of ignoring them can be catastrophic. secondary nozzles (as needed). The last step we take before starting the engine is to prime the fuel line to the fuel nozzles. Believe it or not, we have seen starting problems on a PT6 caused by air in the fuel line. We disconnect the fuel line to the #8 (bottom) nozzle and connect a hose. Then motor the engine with the fuel on until you get a solid stream. This also allows you to pull the fuel lever back to ensure it cuts off. Follow the guidance of the starter when doing the motoring runs, as you don’t want to overheat it. You are ready to get back to work when everything is back together and secured. Remember spending a little now can save a lot later.

The maintenance manual also instructs to perform a borescope inspection with each fuel nozzle maintenance event. Once the nozzles are returned to you, or you have your exchange set, you are ready to reinstall them. Use engine oil for the packings on your transfer tubes. DON’T use grease. If a product like DC-4 is used, there is potential that it can “clog” the transfer tube. Make sure to reference your maintenance manual for proper procedures and location of primary and

Aircraft Corrosion — Just a Nuisance, or a Major Problem? The most irreversible threat to the longevity of the airplanes we love is corrosion. Is it just a nuisance or a major problem? It depends on how long it is left untreated and where it is.

B 16 | agairupdate.com

By Dennis Wolter

2020 National General Aviation Technician of the Year Find It, Slow It Down, and Stop It Cabin areas are particularly corrosion-prone. Keeping water out of the cabin is very important. Take a little moisture in the form of humidity, plus a little salt from your Florida vacation, added to a long winter’s nap in a damp hangar, and there’s ample opportunity for corrosion to form. We’ve all heard that ocean-based airplanes are corrosion buckets, but you don’t have to live oceanside. If your

airplane is exposed to salt air during even one visit, salt crystals will remain inside and cause corrosion. The first stage of corrosion can be seen in a darkening of the metal, for instance, when a polished bare metal airplane sits outside and begins to look dull. The second stage is the presence of visible aluminum oxide in the form of a gray powder or crust. The third and most advanced stage of corrosion exists when crusty oxidation is removed to reveal severe pitting, cracks, or holes in the metal surface. ➤

Corrosion can occur anywhere, so keep your eyes open and be tenacious in your efforts to find it.

Closely inspect, then remove and treat any corrosion you find. Check the upper cabin in high wing airplanes; lower cabin areas in low wing planes. You’ll find most problems in critical floor and wing attachments. Check the door latches and seals, the windshield and windows for leaks, floors, carpets, and seat rails. If you see any corrosion, keep looking, you’ll probably find more. Corrosion is dealt with on three levels: prevention, removal, and treatment. The overall goal is to take a surface from corroded to cleaned, treated, and chromated. A few steps you can take: treat with an anticorrosion spray, wash your airplane after an ocean trip, keep landing gear wells and bellies de-greased/cleaned, properly maintain all door/ window seals, and keep drain holes/battery box drain hoses open.

A heated hangar is unquestionably the best storage for corrosion control, but insulated hangars are the next best choice. Outside, a hard surface is better than grass. Keep animals out. Get your aircraft painted using a qualified shop to avoid future corrosion. Corrosion can occur anywhere, so keep your eyes open and be tenacious in your efforts to find it. Know that intermittent electrical problems can often be traced to the presence of corrosion. Reinspect and evaluate at every annual to check that your efforts effectively reduced or eliminated the corrosion. Whether you attempt to do this work yourself or engage the services of a qualified shop, few of us could argue it’s a wise investment. For more on corrosion, refer to chapter 6 in AC 43.13–1B, Acceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices — Aircraft Inspection and Repair, a great source of information published by the FAA and a must-have for anyone working on an airplane.

SPREADING THE FACTS Michelle Miller - michelle@thefarmbabe.com

Perspective on drones: A Simple Answer to ‘Are they “taking our jobs?’ Aerial application accounts for up to 28% of crop protection product delivery where the aircraft can apply over 140 miles per hour.

B 20 | agairupdate.com

There has been a lot of buzz in recent years about rising technology in terms of drones and unmanned aircraft-type tech in food and farming - also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs.)

of agricultural pilots. This is a crucial outsourced component that naturally helps farmers protect their crops as a solidly built relationship for farm operations. In this instance, drones may or may not offer an additional labor benefit.

But is it something we should worry about? Do you constantly get this question asked but shrug it off because the reality of the entire concept is too much to try to explain?

Pilots are the tried and true. Since the aerial application industry began in the early 1920s, we have seen the successes of this time and time again. We can count on pilots, and the technology is solid and sound, with plenty of opportunities for aviation and agricultural enthusiasts to come together and get the job done of feeding the world. Aerial application accounts for up to 28% of crop protection product delivery where the aircraft can glide over 140 miles per hour. This is important as some pests and diseases can do serious damage in just a day or two. A drone, or even a multitude of drones, cannot compete with that. ➤

It’s no secret that the labor force within the agriculture sector has been a struggle. As with many other industries, it can be hard to find good help nowadays. For example - although the H2A program is time-consuming and expensive, farmers and other agriculturalists have had to depend on it to keep their harvests and day-today farm operations. However, we are not seeing considerable stress in or decrease in the number

Drones certainly have their place, but what are the strengths and weaknesses of the tech? What are the downfalls, and can drones glide that fast? For starters, drones generally cannot fly as fast as an airplane and also don’t have near the carrying capacity. Agricultural aircraft can hold between 400 and 800 gallons of product. Can your drone do that? Economies of scale matter. Drones would work better for smaller-scale farms, while larger farms can still find substantial benefits in ag aviation. Drones also don’t compare to the larger scale dayto-day longevity factor. What about the product application? Can drones “legally” apply the product at a per acre rate? If so, a 5-gallon per acre application works great for a 2-acre farm on a 10-gallon drone. People who develop and build drones and tech associated provide many jobs in research and development but still need to be watched and manned if something goes wrong. Planes have nozzles, regulations, and specialty equipment that’s been proven, tested, and confirmed with precision improvement over many decades. With drones being as new as they are, is the technology as sophisticated? Are the drones, which a classified as aircraft, regulated? Can a computer really compete with a human being in the driver’s seat? And what about the drone software - are there more glitches and things that can go wrong?

UNITED STATES

How about charging, batteries, longevity, and software updates? Will farmers get frustrated with having one more piece of computer equipment on the farm that could break down and be held responsible or wait too long to fix to get the job done? There’s an additional learning curve, no doubt. And with approximately 100 years of history within agricultural aviation, the answer becomes quite clear: pilots and aviation experts will likely bounce back quickly should a problem arise.

In conclusion, while agriculture needs all types of technology and multiple avenues to control pests, fertilizer, seed, and more, it shouldn’t upset the Agriculture Aviation industry as they’re likely not going anywhere anytime soon. The human component, efficiency, visual oversight in terms of regulations and training, the overall history of the industry, and so much more show clear advantages to agriculture aviation – especially for global food systems security and feeding the world on a larger scale. Maybe this quick excerpt will help you explain it.

John Wesley Kelly, Life-Long Texas Ag-Pilot, Passes at 82 John Wesley (J.W.) Kelley, 82, of Bay City, Texas, passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday, June 15, 2022. He was born on March 25, 1940, in Greenland, Arkansas. J.W. grew up in Arkansas. In 1960, he moved to Bay City and eventually met his wife, Judy. J.W. had many talents and an adventurous nature. In his younger years, his hobbies included riding motorcycles, flying airplanes, skydiving, and competing in archery contests. He had a love for music and played in many bands throughout the years. As a teenager, he taught himself to play the guitar and could play almost any instrument by ear (a trait he passed down to his son and grandson). J.W. had a strong work ethic and always had a project. He owned several businesses through his life, including a restaurant or two and an autobody shop, but his career was in agricultural aviation. He owned Kelley’s Flying Service and was a crop-dusting pilot until he could no longer fly. He never slowed down and always had a plan to build or modify something. Later in life one of his favorite things to do was spend time with his “four perfect grandchildren.” His drive and

REGINA’S PERSPECTIVE

Regina Farmer regina.farmer@chem-man.com

Social Media for your Business Before joining the social media movement in 2009, I would’ve never thought I’d write an article about “social media.” However, I find it has been very helpful in communicating with my customers. I never in my wildest dreams realized how much so. Many people dismiss the social media platform by saying, “my customer base is older, so it’s not worth it,” or “I just don’t have the time,” or possibly “I can’t stand all of the drama.” B 26 | agairupdate.com

Yes, I have older customers that love their flip phones. However, their grandsons, who are helping with the operation, know me well and send me questions. Yes, I’m very busy, and it seems like I’m getting texts, messages, calls, and chats from every angle. But you know what? I love it! I’d rather be swamped than sitting in my office wishing someone would call.

UNITED STATES

Yes! There is a lot of drama on social media! You always have the option to unfollow those who seem to annoy you. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a filter for annoying people? Lol! However, to me, it’s been worth it. I love being a part of the “Crop-duster” groups and others such as “My job depends on ag.” I’ve become friends with many people I’ve never even met. I’ve used some sites to get information for the articles I write. Last month I wrote about “fuel surcharges” and found out that many farmers prefer transparency when it comes to fuel surcharges rather than raising their prices. One morning, I woke up to 2 Facebook messages. The first was from a sweet lady who had sent an inquiry about our Chem-Man software, having found me from a discussion on the Crop-duster Sisterhood group. It was so nice because she messaged me pictures of the planes and told me all about the business they were starting. We messaged back and forth and got them started! We are now good Facebook friends. The second message was from a customer asking me a question about a feature that we already had. I replied, letting him know how to find and use the feature.

I also received a text on my smartphone asking if I could sync a customer’s account with their wireless GPS. I was able to message them right away once it was done. Years ago, I noticed pilots posting their beautiful pictures on Facebook. I mentioned that I’d like to see more of them, and boy, was I impressed with the response! Everyone had such beautiful photos that we decided to start an annual photo contest usually held around November. It’s always fun to see the beautiful images that come in. I especially love the ones with kids in them, showing off our future pilots. I am noticing more and more operations getting on board with their own Facebook page, especially those who keep it updated with posts, even if just a picture. Outdated pages never get too much attention. Even if you’ve got to get your grandkids to help you, they’d probably love being your “social media” helper. I’m sure I’ve written about some of this before, but I wanted to relay it again, communication is key to having a good relationship with your customer. It also sends the world a good positive vibe about our industry. Thank you all for feeding the world! Y’all stay safe out there!

A WING AND A PRAYER

Carlin Lawrence carlin@agairupdate.com

Set Your Mind on Heavenly and Eternal Things

“Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth” (Colossians 3:2).

"If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God" (Colossians 3:1). Christians who live according to the standards of this world are willingly violating God's standards of living a Godly life—and it hinders their witness for Jesus Christ. When people see our actions and hear our words, can they say, "There's a person who has entered into the secret places of the holiness of God!" If our mind hasn't learned to live in heavenly places, our witness for Jesus Christ will have minimal effect on this world. Christians who are preoccupied with the world's systems, money (greed), fame, popularity, and the fashions of this world will not be good witnesses for Jesus Christ. Christians whose minds are on worldly things are being controlled by their fleshly desires, not the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16-26). God will keep you in perfect peace if your mind is totally occupied with God (Isaiah 26:3). "Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth" (Colossians 3:2). We have to work in this world to make a living for ourselves and our families, which occupies our time. And it's easy for even active church-going Christians to get caught up in habitually chasing this world's material things and pleasures. But Christians whose minds and attitudes are habitually preoccupied with worldly things and pleasures are demonstrating where their real priorities are. What people love the most rules their life; what

B 28 | agairupdate.com

they talk about and how they act shows where their allegiance is. Christians must take an active role in pushing themselves away from worldly activities and systems. God has given Christians His Holy Spirit to provide us with the power to resist ungodly worldly thoughts and activities (John 17:15). "Greater is He that is in you than he who is in the world" (1 John 4:4). We need to remember that the things of this world have no eternal value (1 John 2:15-17). "Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God" (James 4:4b). The word "wants" is from the Greek word "boulomai," which means a strong desire that makes a deliberate choice to have a powerful affection for the pleasures and things of this world rather than a love for God. Either you are a believer in Jesus Christ and a lover of God, or you're an enemy of God—there's no middle ground! If your mind and actions are constantly on the things and pleasures of this world, it's a good indication that your commitment to the Lord is superficial, and God calls you His enemy. God is personally the enemy of those people who habitually disobey God's word to satisfy their lustful and worldly desires. Jesus said, "You cannot serve God and mammon (worldly riches)" (Matthew 6:24). You might call Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior, but if you live an ungodly lifestyle, He says He doesn't know you (Matthew 7:21-23). Words and actions matter to God!

"For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God" (Colossians 3:3). Before a person puts their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, they are spiritually dead—we are born that way. Sinning doesn't make us sinners; we sin because we're natural-born sinners. After a person puts their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, they become spiritually alive in Jesus Christ. "I am crucified with Christ, yet I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me" (Galatians 2:20). From an eternal perspective, God has placed every Christian in heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6). We still live in our earthly body on this earth, but heavenly thoughts should occupy our minds, and our actions promote heavenly activities. Christians have to constantly guard their mind against fleshly lusts and earthly things. Peter said, "Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you" (1 Peter 5:6-7). "For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but the world" (1 John 2:16). The word "pride" is from the Greek word "huperephanos," which means "showing oneself above others, pre-eminent, overtopping, conspicuous above others," and it's always used in an evil sense in the New Testament—arrogant, disdainful, and haughty. The Bible says our life is like a shadow, a puff of smoke, a vapor, flowers, and grass that withers away, a breath, short and full of trouble, our days flee away, and there's hardly a step between our physical birth and death. Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die" (John 11:25-26). "When Christ who is our life appears, you will also appear with Him in glory" (Colossians 3:4). Christians who seek after heavenly things groan in their earthly bodies, waiting to be clothed with the eternal body that's waiting for us in heaven (Romans 8:23, 2 Corinthians 5:1-8). Someday this sinful world will see that the Jesus Christ we worship and the heaven we talk about is real because we will return to this earth with Jesus Christ. When Jesus returns to this earth, the armies of heaven will be following Him, dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Christians will be clothed with their perfect, eternal, and heavenly body when they return to this earth with Jesus Christ. And we will rule with Him on this earth (Revelation 19:14-15, 20:4-6). You can be among those who return with Jesus Christ; all you have to do is trust Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

Mabry I. Anderson An Insider’s History of Agricultural Aviation

THE SPREAD TO THE EASTERN SEABOARD — Chapter Five Continued…

Rare photo of Chris Stoltzfus dusting sweet corn with Travel-Air near Morgantown, Pennsylvania, in 1944.

At this time, the 450 horsepower Pratt & Whitney engine was replacing the old Continentals and Lycomings. Stoltzfus was among the first to completely equip his fleet with these engines. This was because of his interest in the surplus engine and component market, in which he began to become involved. The firm expanded its hangar space at its base two miles from Coatesville and became well-known for its dealings in parts, engines, and services, in addition to its agricultural aviation work. In it's early years, this firm was known as Aerial Crop Service, but the name was later changed to Chris D. Stoltzfus and Associates. Stoltzfus, always the innovator, saw the possibility of mosquito control in towns and heavily infested rural areas by using aircraft. He set about convincing local authorities of the feasibility of such programs and, as early as 194 7, was B 30 | agairupdate.com

able to sell Gettysburg its first spraying job with DDT. With considerable fanfare, the entire town was sprayed on September 17, 194 7, as a joint project between the town and its local Chamber of Commerce. Some $750 was raised by the city council, and the Chamber paid Stoltzfus for spraying roughly 500 to 700 acres with a mixture of light diesel oil plus three-forths pound of DDT per acre. The county agent assured the residents that the material would kill both the mosquito larvae by smothering them and also the adult mosquitos. He also warned them that the material would leave a light film of oil on everything it touched, and that such things as autos and laundry would have to be covered. He also advised that the material could easily be washed off.

UNITED STATES

Residents of Gettysburg were also told by the county agent that the possibility of danger from the spraying was virtually nonexistent. As for danger from the DDT drifting into the water reservoir and having ill effects, the residents were informed that: "Even if we sprayed the reservoir on purpose, you would have to drink half of the water in it to get any harmful effects. But to make doubly certain, we will not spray within 50 feet of the reservoir." The Gettysburg spray job was an eminent success, and, within a very short time, this type work was being done all over mosquito infested regions. In direct contrast to today's somewhat panicky attitude to pesticide spraying, these wholesale sprayings of towns and cities became quite common beginning in 1947. Another early venture by Stoltzfus and his firm was involvement in the 1947 gypsy moth control program in Pennsylvania, one of the first such efforts in the state or the Northeast. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture initiated this program in the heavily forested regions south of Scranton and east of Wilkes Barre. Three of Stoltzfus' planes were used in this first program, and one of them set a new record by applying DDT to 960 acres in one day.

It was also recorded that four hours after the planes passed over the area, ground observers gathered literally quarts of dead moth larvae from trays that had been placed under the tree canopy. T.L. Guyton, director of the Division of Plant Industry, stated that the "most remarkable" control had been obtained. Later, he also stated that, for many months after this spraying, not one live caterpillar of the gypsy moth could be found in that region. Control programs such as this became commonplace in the Northeast and became a regular portion of Stoltzfus' application service. As a result of this early work, gypsy moth programs became "big business" and, by the middle of the 1950s, U.S. government contracts were being let, and much of the work was being done by huge converted aircraft such as the B-17 bomber, capable of carrying thousands of gallons of material. By early 1951, Stoltzfus had become widely known all over the United States and even internationally. He voluntarily sent two of his aircraft and pilot Gerald Lantz to Iran to furnish help and expertise in combating a devastating plague of locusts that was decimating 180,000 square miles of that country. ➤

Chris Stoltzfus, 1944, in front of Travel-Air.

Stoltzfus' firm worked with officials of an organization known as United States Overseas on a contract with the U.S. Department of State. In time, this plague was wiped out and the country saved from starvation. Much credit was due Stoltzfus, along with his personnel and equipment, for the success of this program. Also early in the 1950s, the Mediterranean fruit fly reappeared in the Florida citrus groves. Stoltzfus and firm immediately began fulfilling contracts in that region. An airborne spray program was coupled with a biological program where sterile males were released to breed with fertile females, disrupting the reproduction cycle. This attack virtually eradicated the fruit fly from Florida, until its recent return. The Stoltzfus firm continued to expand, not only in the application business, but also handling aircraft supplies, especially engines and engine overhaul. Stoltzfus worked constantly to improve equipment and techniques. He was one of the first to “metalize” the fuselages of Stearman aircraft, which created a much neater plane and also one that was much easier to keep clean and perhaps flew a few miles faster over the fields. In the early 1960s, the forested areas of the Eastern Seaboard were under constant threat of fire. Authorities began investigating the possibility of using aircraft as a means of fighting these fires. Stoltzfus immediately went to B 32 | agairupdate.com

work with the Pennsylvania Forests and Water Department. Programs were. designed so that Stoltzfus’ aircraft could dump water on such fires, particularly in the heavily forested mountainous areas where conventional methods were not feasible. Aircraft quickly applied large volumes of water to these fires, along with some chemical mixtures. This method proved to be quite practical and was used from that time on, not only in Pennsylvania, but in virtually all of the Eastern Atlantic states subject to such fire hazards. Stoltzfus and his firm became deeply involved in this forest fire work and attempted to improve methods and equipment. As a final improvement, Stoltzfus designed and installed a water dumping unit in a Douglas DC3. The first successful water dump was made by plane in April 1970. A tremendous volume of liquid could be carried and this conversion laid the groundwork for the construction of more and more fire fighting planes of high capacity. Large tank units were installed in a number of other heavy, multi-engined aircraft, which were soon engaged in forest firefighting all over the United States and Canada. Some of the fine pilots who worked with Stoltzfus during this period were his brother John, T.R. Coats, “Buddy” Lewis, Wayne North, and John Klein. Not to be overlooked was Carl Clendennin, a master mechanic whose skill played a significant role in the success of the firm and its application programs.

Mentoring the Next Generation By Ted Delanghe Mark Twain once quipped: “A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way.” He was addressing the value of experience in gaining knowledge.

“A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way.”

A good friend of mine who runs an FBO told me a story of the difference experience makes. One of his younger pilots was taking a Cessna 172 with a local businessman as a sole passenger to an all-day meeting about two hours flight time away. All went well on the morning outbound flight, and around 3 pm, my friend was awaiting a call from his pilot with an ETA on the return flight. He quickly checked the weather and found the actuals and terminal forecast reported and forecast heavy freezing rain. About the same time, my friend received a call from a very worked-up businessman and angrily demanded a more experienced pilot to fly him home. My friend asked why, and the man said the pilot he had was afraid of a bit of icing and was canceling the trip. My friend replied: “Oh, you don’t need a more experienced pilot. You need a less experienced one.” Whenever we learn something new, there are tools of the trade that some say can come only from firsthand experience. But if we take a closer look at that perspective, I think there are some other very effective learning options as well that can only complement and improve the learning process. That begins with everyone involved in the operation having an open and inviting dialogue discussing all aspects of ag flying. Looking back over my many decades of working as an ag pilot, one of the things that struck me is the good fortune I had early in my career to work

A 32 | agairupdate.com

with experienced pilots who were willing to share their perspectives, experiences, and stories with me. I’ve recently had an opportunity to mentor a new ag pilot over his first season, fresh off an excellent ag pilot course. The opportunity has given me considerable food for thought. What’s the first thing to emphasize? How to ensure you are not coming across as a “know it all.” Is it better to leave him on his own and wait until he gets involved in an incident before adding a few comments here and there? I’ve also instructed a couple of ag pilot programs, and the very first thing we stressed is the three most important items they would learn on the course: “Flight Safety, Flight Safety, Flight Safety!”. You want to have the same number of landings as takeoffs. One of the first pieces of advice on how to achieve that very laudable goal was told to me by an experienced Kiwi ag pilot, who said, “Flight safety starts the moment you get up in the morning and are heading out the door en route to the airstrip. Ensure your flight safety hat is on when you go through that door, and don’t take it off until you come back through that door at the end of the day.” ➤

For pilots new to the business (and for those more experienced as well), another question comes up again and again: when do you decide whether the trip is a go or no-go? There are many variables: wind, humidity, temperature, neighboring vulnerable crops, the severity of the infestation, etc. Again, experience came to the rescue from an ‘old timer’ from the States. He said he used to ask himself two questions before any flight. Will it be safe? Will it be effective? If the answer to these questions is not an immediate and emphatic “Yes!”, then the trip is a no-go, end of discussion. The question of accidents often comes up in the conversation with newcomers to the business. Are mishaps inevitable as part and parcel of the low-level working environment? Is it just a matter of sooner or later? Rather than focus on the question of yes or no, I think it’s better to have a proactive focus on what you can do to stay away from situations that might lead to a mishap. That conversation starts with a continuing dialogue on one of the leading factors that arise from accident investigations: fatigue, that sly and cunning animal that creeps up on the unsuspecting repeatedly. While fatigue has been covered more extensively in a previous edition of this column, let it be said that allowing a pilot to become dangerously fatigued is equivalent in terms of reducing reaction times and general awareness to having them drinking on the job. SPRAYING TECHNOLOGY SINCE 1997

Next on the list is learning how to say “No!”, especially when someone is pressuring you to go when you don’t want to. For novice pilots in virtually any environment, it is very difficult to refuse an owner’s demand to fly when your job may be in jeopardy. I remember hearing from a pilot checking the weather before heading off with a load. The company owner came into the briefing room and asked the young pilot what on earth he was doing. “Checking the weather,” said the pilot, to which the owner replied: “Why are you wasting time doing that. You’re going to go anyways!”. Luckily these days, the vast majority of owners leave that decision to the pilot, realizing that an occasional postponed trip with a very expensive aircraft is a lot better than trying to sell what has become scrap metal. Or something much worse. To those new to the business, a hearty welcome to one of the most satisfying and valuable jobs in aviation. You are literally helping feed the world by protecting crops from a myriad of pests. To experienced owner/operators and pilots, continue to do what you are probably already doing: be free and open to passing along information that will make the apprentice a better and safer pilot. And don’t forget that they will make mistakes like all of us. One of my very favorite instructors was a highly experienced and professional pilot who had been around since just after dirt was discovered. He said there are three stages in anyone’s instructional career. Stage one is when you don’t know what mistakes the students are going the make, and they make them. Stage two is when you know what mistakes they are going to make, and they make them. The final stage is when you know what mistakes they will make, and they don’t make them! Whether the label is greenhorn, novice, newbie, beginner, mentee, or apprentice, they are the future of the ag pilot business. They should be treated as valuable contributors from the very first day they arrive on the job. Helping them to learn the business through the experience of others only makes good business sense.

West Central Ag-Air Inc. Pens Impressive Response to Wind Farm Project Editors Note: Ryan Lubben, owner of West Central AgAir, Inc recently submitted a very detailed and accurate letter to the Commerce Department Environmental Review Manager for Dodge County, Minnesota. The letter, in its entirety is reprinted below. Ryan went above and beyond standard talking points, including images and facts. To: Suzanne Steinhauer, Commerce Department Environmental Review Manager From: Ryan Lubben, Owner of West Central Ag-Air Inc, Re: Dodge County Wind project IP6981/CN-20-865, WS20-866, TL-20-867 Summary: NextEra Energy Resources Dodge County Wind project and associated transmission line will have a negative impact on the ability of aerial applicators to safely apply crop protection products, seeds, and fertilizers This will have a significant impact to growers both financially and environmentally in the area of the wind turbine site and near the associated transmission lines. Dear Suzanne, The aerial application business continues to be strong and growing in MN and nationwide. 2021 marked the 100th anniversary of the first aerial application, and today there are approximately 2700 aerial applicators across the United States. These applicators apply products on 28% of the total cropland nationwide equating to approximately 127 million acres. (https://www.agaviation.org/Files/ pressreleases/naaa-releases-2019-aerial-applicationindustry survey.pdf) I am an aerial applicator based at the Fergus Falls MN airport. I have been in the aerial application business in for the last 28 years and have accumulated close to 5000 hours of ag flying time in my career. My company currently operates two large turbine aerial application aircraft, with which we treat roughly 60,000 acres of cropland, pasture, and forest each year. I am a long-time member of the National Agricultural Aircraft Association A 36 | agairupdate.com

and the Minnesota Agricultural Aircraft Association of which I am a current board member. For the past several years, my company has been hired by an agricultural supply coop to aerially apply fungicides and insecticides to corn and soybeans in the vicinity of the Dodge Center airport. I have personally flown in the area that will be impacted by this wind power project and therefore have considerable knowledge about the layout of the fields and obstacles located in the area. I can tell you with great certainty that if the project goes ahead as planned, thousands of acres of high-quality farmland will not be able to be treated by ag aircraft. Before I talk about the hazards of the proposed wind farm, I would like to explain a bit about why growers need to retain the ability to use ag aircraft. #1 Efficiency. A single professional pilot can easily apply products to 2000 acres or more in a single day. This is significantly more than any other form of application. All doing this without damaging a single plant. Aerial application is also not limited to a certain crop stage, meaning if the crop gets too tall or the ground too muddy for a ground applicator, aerial application is the only way to get it done. What happened in Illinois during the 2021 growing season is the perfect example. As the corn crop reached tassel, there were heavy rains in the area increasing disease pressure and making it impossible for ground applicators to treat the fields. Aerial applicators came from all over the country to help out the local operators in that area and got the job done. Without the aerial applicators, crop losses would have been significant. #2 Economics. Growers in the area typically get an average of a 17 bushel increase in corn yield by applying a fungicide during the tassel stage of development. (Per conversation with a local grower) Using today’s cash corn price of $7.63/bushel, this equates to an increase of $129 per acre. My company would charge roughly $21/acre for this application including chemical. That translates to $108 per acre of profit for the farmer, or a 500% return on investment!

#3 Environmental. Seeding cover crops into standing crop has become more popular. Cover cropping is when seed such as rye is spread into a currently growing crop. The seed then germinates and grows after the main crop is harvested. The benefits of this practice are many and include soil nutrient and carbon capture, soil erosion prevention, higher yields and cover for wildlife. Aerial application is the only way to spread cover crops into standing crop without destroying what is growing. During the last decade, split applications of nitrogen fertilizer has become increasingly popular, where a portion of the fertilizer need is applied during the growing season. This practice can reduce the total amount of fertilizer required by applying it when the crop needs it the most. If the ground becomes saturated during this time, an aerial application of dry fertilizer would be needed. These dry applications are particularly vulnerable to wind towers because the aircraft application height is higher and would then put the aircraft in the area of the turbine blades at all times. Aerial application in Dodge County: This is a map of the area with the GPS flight tracks (blue lines) from my operation from one single season overlaid on to it. As you can see, my aircraft are regularly flying through and within the affected area. It should be noted that I was not the only operation using the Dodge Center airport. There are several other operations that use this airport and spray in the same vicinity. There are also aircraft that apply in this area from other airports. It is not uncommon for today’s aerial aircraft to ferry 30 miles or more from the load site. Corn is the main crop in the area, and because of the high profitability of a tassel time fungicide application, this means that quite a large portion of the farmland is serviced by aerial application. Now that we have established that the area is regularly serviced by aerial aircraft let’s look at what it takes to safely make aerial applications.

A 38 | agairupdate.com

This map shows the GPS flight tracks from a typical field being sprayed. The blue lines are the flight path and the red lines are the actual spray swaths. As you can see, the aircraft needs quite a large area to have room in order to turn around on the end of the field. In fact, most of the flying takes place outside of the field being treated. The distance needed for this particular aircraft is approximately¾ of a mile. As a rule of thumb, and aircraft needs a full mile of distance on the end of the field to make a safe turn around. Obstacle free turn around areas is critical for these aircraft as the turnaround maneuver is when the aircraft is quite slow and vulnerable to an aerodynamic stall. The applicator must remain focused at this point and cannot be distracted by obstacles, and must have ample room to make the maneuver. This map shows the proposed locations of the Dodge Center wind turbines in the western portion only. Each red dot indicates a turbine location. I have highlighted the fields in yellow which would not meet the criteria of having a one mile turn around obstacle free zone on the end of the field. I estimate this map to be a conservative representation of what fields cannot be serviced by ag aircraft. There may be many more surrounding fields that will be difficult or impossible to apply to. Remember this is just a portion of the wind farm area. There will be many more fields affected. Clearly this proposed wind farm will have far reaching impacts on growers in the area in regard to aerial application. Quite frankly the density and random turbine layout will make it impossible for aerial applicators to work safely. Furthermore, it may be impossible for growers in the area to even entice an applicator to come in and do any work in the larger area. Quite honestly, if this windfarm gets built, I will probably cease operations in the region completely.

INTERNATIONAL

The proposed transmission line is also a great concern. The wires are too high to pull up over and yet too low to fly under. Of particular concern is the 18 changes of direction in the route. Each direction change will create a corner in which the aircraft can simply not operate in. Also, each direction change requires guy wires to support the poles. Guy wires are particularly hard for pilots to see and avoid.

area because I know I can exit the turbine area in a straight line and make my turn arounds outside of the wind farm. This could easily be done in the proposed wind farm by orientating the wind towers in groups or in straight lines and leaving a mile buffer between groups or lines to allow room for aircraft turn arounds. I have offered to talk about this with the wind developer, but to no avail.

Even more concerning is the “corner cutting” on some of these direction changes. This is when the wire would go from pole to pole across a corner of the field at a 45-degree angle. These types of wire crossings are EXTREMELY dangerous to ag pilots as they approach them. This situation creates an illusion that the wire is straight ahead when in fact the wing tip of the aircraft is closer to the wire than the pilot thinks. Similarly, as the pilot dives over the wire from above, it is impossible to know where the wire is in relation to the aircraft.

As far as the transmission line is concerned, the best alternative would be an underground line. NextEra has said that this is not feasible, but I’d like to ask where is the proof? Are we to just take their word for it? Isn’t that just a cost of doing business?

Alternatives: The incredibly large scope and density of the Dodge County wind turbine layout is what is the issue here. Changes can be made for the area to keep aerial application while still producing wind power. A perfect example of this is the McNeilus wind farm located just two miles south of the Dodge Center airport. This wind farm has the towers lined up and contained in a small area. I have actually been quite comfortable spraying fields in this

Aerial application and wind farms like the one proposed in Dodge County simply cannot coexist. Please take this into consideration when drafting the Environmental Assessment for this project. I would also like to invite you to come and visit my facility, take a look at the aircraft, and learn about our 101-yearold industry. Both the MAAA and NAAA web sites have a lot of great information about aerial application and you can call me anytime with any questions. Phone: 218-770-0130 Email: wcagair@live.com

Seat Wanted Looking for an opportunity to move into a seat. I have good experience loading, having worked for a reputable operator in Southern Idaho for 10 months. Growing up on a ranch and working as a herdsman/ cowboy as a working career, I understand long hours, little sleep, and hard work. I have my CDL with experience hauling cattle, flatbed, tanker, dump trucks with pups, and utilizing it with the spray operation. I can operate machinery efficiently, boom trucks, auger trucks, forklifts, telehandlers, etc. I can be trusted to run a load pad by myself and know the importance of checking chemical labels, amount of chemical, water source, fuel, etc. I have experience in dry and liquid work, am efficient in switching from dry to liquid and vice versa. We did a lot of government work and know what it takes to take the “show on the road” whether it be for dry or liquid, and making due loading off of remote strips. I can weld, have mechanical aptitude (would love to get my A&P), and learn quickly. The gentleman I worked for is very knowledgeable in the industry and passes that well to his employees, but I also know that there is a lot more for me to learn, and am eager to do so. I have my Single Engine Commercial Certificate with an instrument rating. I am sitting at 500+ hours with 150+ of that being tailwheel. I currently own a Piper Pacer and am building time quickly. If you have any questions or interest, please reach out to me at 406-930-0800. A lot of time I don’t have service so please leave a voicemail and or a text and I will be sure to get back to you.
