FROM THE COCKPIT

Passing the Torch

Forty years ago, I believe, in 1983, I met a distinguished gentleman from Louisiana at the spring NAAA board meeting in Washington, D.C. Unknown to me since I was a newcomer to being an NAAA representative for the Georgia Agricultural Aviation Association, the gentleman was Mr. Jack Keahey. We were at the hotel bar, of course, when he introduced himself. Both of us being from the South, we hit it off immediately. That night began a longtime relationship that evolved into becoming friends with his son, Drew, and his grandson Reed.

Not long after that meeting in D.C., I traveled to Keahey Flying Service in Columbia, Louisiana, to write an article about Drew breaking into the business, mentored by Jack. Jack was easing out of his ag seat to focus on his farm. This put Drew at the reins of Keahey Flying Service. Since then, a lot of history has passed, filled with good times for the 59-yearold company.

History has a way of repeating itself. As Jack did with Drew, the same format was followed when Drew brought his son Reed into the business. Again, like Jack, Drew got out of the ag-seat and started farming full time, while now, Reed owns and operates Keahey Flying Service.

It has been interesting to watch us “older” generation ag operators pass the torch to our

sons; Jack Frost to Garrett, Grant Lane to Logan, Eddie Shores to Jack, Pat Kornegay to Clyde and Austin and the list goes on and on, including Graham and me. I believe all these fathers consider themselves fortunate to be able to pass on the business to their children. I surely know that I am grateful. I realize that I am naming only a small group of fathers and sons, as there are many more, too many to list in this editorial. It is a very special trait.

Reed flew for Drew for ten years, from 2013 until 2023. This year he approached Drew to devise a plan to buy the company. Today, Reed flies an AT-402B and Drew farms full time. However, I am sure that Reed can call on Drew anytime for advice.

Stories like the above happen every year in the ag-aviation business. It is a good story that reflects the closeness of family. It can be tough that first year watching your “child” takeoff with a load knowing the learning curve can be very unforgiving. However, with a love for the business and the mentoring by the father to the son, it is a good thing.

Until next month,

Keep Turning…

3The rd Generation

For as long as he can remember, airplanes and ag aviation have been a mainstay in Reed Keahey’s life. As the thirdgeneration owner of Keahey Flying Service, Reed continues protecting some of the same fields his father and grandfather have done since the mid-1960s.

Keahey Flying Service was started in 1964 by Jack Keahey, Reed’s grandfather, at a small hangar and grass strip just north of Columbia, LA. Jack flew Pawnees and Ag-Cats and mentored his son, Drew, in the business until he ultimately took over in 1990, allowing Jack to focus on his farming operation.

Reed’s earliest memories of flying span many different planes. From a Cub or Husky around Caldwell Parish, Louisiana, to cross countries in Bonanzas. During the summers as a kid, Reed spent many days at the airport or on satellite grass strips watching Drew, his dad, fly and

work. By that time, Jack had retired from flying and was farming full-time. When Reed was old enough, he began working summers at the airport, unloading chemicals and keeping things tidy.

Reed graduated from Caldwell Parish High School in 2007 and attended the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) in the fall of that year. He majored in aviation and minored in “social gatherings.” At that point, Reed knew he wanted an aviation career but was unsure which discipline. In 2008, he started working at Monroe Air Center as a lineman fueling aircraft. There, he leaned more towards corporate aviation, flying King Airs or business jets. But, with ag aviation in his blood, it wasn’t too much longer before his thinking started to change back to his roots, often talking with Gulfstream or NetJet pilots and seeing their enthusiasm for the profession of ag flying. In 2009, Reed started his journey to become a pilot. John Majure was Reed’s instructor. ➤

“I met John when I started working at Monroe Air Center, and his passion for aviation is infectious. He knew of my family and gladly assumed the role of my instructor. He always told me I was going to be a great pilot because I had Av-Gas in my blood. I soloed N5311D, an old C172, with eight hours in my logbook.”

Reed obtained his pilot’s license with no issues. Drew bought a Cessna 180 for Reed to get tailwheel time and acclimated to a higher horsepower aircraft. He flew it for

200 hours towards his commercial rating. During that 200 hours, he worked on ag-flying techniques with his dad and even dealt with an in-flight fire.

“It was a scary situation for me and my dad. He was flying beside me in his AT-402, and we were both looking for a safe place to land. I got the Cessna 180 on the ground, and we were able to put out the fire. My dad and I hugged each other tighter than ever and cried together harder than ever,” recalls Reed about his emergency. ➤

Reed obtained his commercial rating and aerial applicator’s certificate in 2013. That year, he slowly became acclimated to the AT-402 taxiing down the runway, getting the tail up, braking, etc. Drew pulled Reed aside one day and said, “Let me know when you are ready to fly it.” Reed didn’t hesitate, and as he was getting used to flying, he would add more and more water to spray out over open fields.

“My dad would always tell me that the GPS would get you hurt quicker than anything else if you let it take your attention away from flying. Getting used to the GPS and light bar was probably my biggest challenge in the 402.”

2014 was an eventful year for the Keahey family. Reed married his beautiful wife, Nicole, and did his first spray job. In August of that year, his dad had an unexpected vertigo episode—a scary moment for everyone. Drew

eventually got his vertigo cured, but in the meantime, Reed was able to take over all the flying for the rest of the year.

“I’m sure it was a shock to my dad and his career, but I saw it as an opportunity for me to step up and take over flying for the business. From then on, I started doing all the flying, and my dad was able to focus on his other business, Keahey Farm Venture.”

Over the next couple of years, Drew and Reed had many conversations about Reed buying the flying service, but the timing was never right. After long talks with his wife, Nicole and Reed decided it would be a great move for their family and continuing as a third-generation ag pilot. Reed approached Drew earlier in 2023 about a possible buyout. ➤

“I know he was excited to pass the torch on to the third generation of Keahey Flying Service, even though I may have caught him off guard a bit! On April 15th, we signed the papers to buy the flying service. So after 33 years, I could retire my dad in his flying career.”

Reed continues in an AT-402, Satloc GPS guidance and CP-09 nozzles. He treats cotton, corn, soybeans, rice and the occasional duck hole for the TV-famed Duck Commanders. He is also active in the National Agricultural Aviation Association and will serve as the President of the Louisiana

Agricultural Aviation Association this upcoming year.

“I have so many people to thank for my life/ career in aviation; my family and friends for their love and support, my mixer/loader and friend Willis Tatum who has watched me grow up and works harder than anyone you’ll ever meet.”

Reed is excited and motivated to be the third generation to own and operate Keahey Flying Service. 2024 will be the company’s 60th year in business, serving the farmers of Caldwell, Ouachita, and Richland Parish, Louisiana.

SwathPRO® System Offers Savings and Peace of Mind

After more than four decades in the business, aerial applicator Kenneth Lauderdale agrees that the SwathPRO individually optimized nozzle spray boom system revolutionized how he gets the job done.

Lauderdale, who operates Lauderdale Aerial Spraying, LLC in Burleson County near Caldwell, in Central Texas, has been in business for more than 45 years. About three years ago, he invested in the SwathPRO spray system from CapstanAG.

“I have never regretted for one moment my investment in these booms. I bought two sets right away the first day I met and talked to these guys about this boom system,” Lauderdale recalls. “The boom does everything. You don't have to have any other extra hardware. It's all built into this system. This is real slick.”

The SwathPRO aerial spray system allows precise and variable control of the application, controlled from the cockpit. There’s no need to land to reconfigure the system.

Lauderdale says, “We bought these things, and the service or support has never been a problem. ➤

An electronic Pulse Width Modulation solenoid is placed in-line with each nozzle. It controls flow and pressure.

It's really a very simple system.”

An electronic Pulse Width Modulation solenoid is placed in-line with each nozzle. It controls flow and pressure. Lauderdale’s AT-802 airplane has 109 spray tips. “The tips are all straight-stream, three different sizes, every third one is a different size. The SwathPRO system maintains the same amount of pressure at each tip — from the center of the boom all the way out to the end.” Lauderdale appreciates being able to change the profile, or the tips or the spray swath on the fly.

“The boom does it all,” says Lauderdale. In practice, this translates in increased acreage per tank, increased

productivity, better spray accuracy in hard to apply areas with immediate system performance feedback, and precise reduced boom widths for regulated applications.

“Defoliation is just phenomenal with these booms, he says. “It does great on irrigated, beautiful cotton standing five feet tall and just as dense as it can ever be. At two to three gallons per acre, the straight stream tips really do a great job for me.” These days, Lauderdale is working a larger territory than ever before, traveling greater distances than he used to. He says it’s not uncommon for him to ferry 150 or 200 miles to do a job. And the flexibility that the in-cockpit control provides has been a game changer.

system allows precise and variable control of the application, controlled from the cockpit. There’s no need to land to reconfigure the system.

“We never really know for sure what it is actually gonna be like when we get there,” Lauderdale explains. “The SwathPRO system makes that task a whole lot easier now. I can leave here with a full load and be confident that I’ll have all the tools necessary to make sure I can go that distance and get that load off without having to land and change a nozzle or a tip or reconfigure something.”

Flipping a switch is all it takes to change swath widths or increase volume and droplet size. “To me, that is worth a lot of money,” he said. “I'm sure that it would be pretty expensive in fuel and time to fly 150 or 200 miles and have to land someplace and manipulate some nozzles or change something.”

After nearly three years at work, the SwathPRO boom system has practically paid for itself. “I think it's a great savings using these booms,” says Lauderdale. “I'm not gonna say that it can eliminate all your problems. We always fear drift, and we strive for on-target application. But I will say that since I have been working with the SwathPRO system I have not had any drift problems. I feel more comfortable with these booms. I don't take very many chances. But again, the tools are there to help you mitigate drift.”

Lauderdale attributes his savings and peace of mind to the technology. “At this point, I don't feel like these booms have been a great expense. They have more than satisfied me as far as the expense these booms,” Lauderdale says. “If you've been through a lawsuit or two, you might really appreciate a good boom. So, if you consider that to be a value, it's been a great value for me in that respect.”

“I guess the sense of security, the feeling I get, is worth a lot to me.”

Air Tractor to Roll Out Modified Paint Scheme, Standard Color Options for Customers

Olney, Texas – In an effort to meet historic demand, Air Tractor airplanes will be produced with a modified paint scheme, offering customers standardized color options, reports Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch.

Despite the supply chain debacle, Air Tractor had a record year for deliveries in 2022. Production for 2023 and 2024 is projected to be even stronger. With demand outpacing

supply, Air Tractor reflected on its mission statement pledging to “provide aircraft to help feed and protect the world.” In support of that mission, Air Tractor recognized that to meet this historic demand, a change is necessary to provide capacity in the paint department.

“Our airplanes will always look and fly like an Air Tractor,” says Hirsch. “Air Tractor is introducing a modified paint

22 | agairupdate.com

scheme for its agricultural airplanes. A yellow base color with blue stripes is the standard color scheme. Customers may choose white as the base color, with no upcharge, if specified at the time of order. Color choices for the main stripe and pin stripe scheme, which will be the same color, are blue, black, red, and green. Our firefighting scheme will remain unchanged. These standardized choices will help the factory respond to high demand by reducing bottlenecks due to paint in the production process.” Hirsch says he Page 2 of 2 anticipates the new paint scheme will begin appearing on airplanes late in the third quarter or early in the fourth quarter of the 2023 production schedule.

Overall, Hirsch reports the updated stripe scheme streamlines the painting process and improves Air Tractor's

overall airplane production efficiency as the aircraft manufacturer aims to produce a record-setting number of planes this year.

“Air Tractor is growing and evolving to deliver more of what our customers want. Leland Snow always pushed for continuous improvement and was driven to help our customers get their job done. Unlike the supply chain, this is within our control and supports our mission of helping feed and protect the world. We do that by getting more airplanes to the market. Our products will evolve over time without losing the spirit of what it means to be Air Tractor,” Hirsch adds.

SPREADING THE FACTS

Debunking the “Antibiotics in Milk” Claim

We have all seen dozens of labels on agricultural products in the grocery store. “Pasture Fed,” “Grass Fed,” “Organically Sourced,” and lastly, “Antibiotic Free.” With so many labels, consumers wonder what is being purchased. Since most consumers are miles away and generations removed from the nearest dairy farm or farmer, it can be easy to fall for sly marketing tactics. Today, let’s examine the stringent regulations and practices in place to ensure that all milk is antibiotic free with every sip.

It is crucial to understand that milk produced for human consumption is strictly regulated and tested to ensure it is antibiotic-free. Dairy farmers follow comprehensive protocols to maintain the safety and quality of their milk. Examples? Regular screenings are conducted at both the farm and processing levels to check for bacteria or antibiotic levels. These screenings employ highly sensitive testing methods to detect even the tiniest amounts of antibiotics. Many farms use robot technology that analyzes the milk contents of each cow before it is placed into a larger tank. If any residue is found, the entire batch is discarded and is not used for consumption.

Antibiotics are a safe and very effective treatment for many illnesses. When a cow requires antibiotics to treat an illness, her milk is discarded during a specified withdrawal period. For example, mastitis is a common infection that impacts dairy cows. This is a painful inflammatory response to bacteria in the udder that is not only painful but causes a decrease in milk production. In some cases, a holistic option can be pursued, but these methods can take weeks to provide relief, and the milk supply may be permanently damaged. Antibiotics offer easy, fast-acting relief.

Once antibiotics have been administered, that cow’s milk will be discarded throughout the withdrawal period. This ensures the milk is completely free from any antibiotic residues before being collected for human consumption.

Farmers diligently adhere to these regulations, as any violation can lead to severe penalties.

Farmers who care for dairy cows prioritize the health and well-being of their animals. They provide a range of essential treatments and care to ensure the cows’ optimal health. This includes regular veterinary check-ups, vaccinations, and preventive measures to protect against common diseases. Farmers also ensure that cows have access to clean water, nutritious feed, and comfortable housing that meets their specific needs.

They monitor the cows’ behavior, body condition, and milk production to promptly identify any signs of discomfort or illness. Additionally, farmers ensure that cows are not subjected to undue stress, such as providing proper ventilation, ample space to move, and opportunities for social interaction. Overall, farmers strive to create a safe and nurturing environment for their dairy cows, as their well-being directly correlates with milk production, low antibiotic usage and the dairy industry’s sustainability.

Consumers can trust the milk they consume is safe, wholesome and always antibiotics-free. Additionally, dairy farmers are transparent about their practices, welcoming inspections and certifications that guarantee their commitment to quality and safety. Consumers can trust dairy farmers’ dedication to providing nutritious dairy products while upholding the highest animal welfare standards and sustainable farming practices.

Thrush Aircraft Announces Transport Canada Type Certification of New Aircraft Model

ALBANY, Georgia, May 26, 2023 — Thrush Aircraft, LLC, a major aerial application aircraft manufacturing company, announced the next step in completing four certification programs for two engine and airframe configurations. These programs combine their best 510-gallon airframe with additional engine options from Pratt and Whitney (PT634AG and PT6-140AG) to create the 510P2 and 510P2+ models. Both engines are integrated with single and dualcockpit versions of the airframe, historically used for their 510G model.

Thrush is pleased to announce that both new single cockpit configurations have been granted their Type Certificate Approval from Transport Canada. The dual-

cockpit configurations are planned for certification later this summer. 510P2 and 510P2+ models have been ordered by eight different countries on three continents. Thrush will continue to build and deliver the 710P aircraft, as that production line is not affected by the certification program.

Mark McDonald, Thrush Aircraft’s CEO, commented, “The new P2 and P2+ deliver increased performance, productivity and reliability to our customers. We are continuing to invest in our production capacity to meet the growing demand for our products and services. The feedback from operators has been very positive and we’re grateful for the significant number of orders we’ve received.”

TracMap has Rebranded to Tabula, Acquired CLASS Software

TracMap, a trusted agriculture technology partner for 16 years, is rebranding to Tabula. TracMap is excited to announce a new chapter in the company’s evolution. TracMap, the technology brand that aviators have come to trust and rely on, is rebranding to Tabula. This change represents the company’s commitment to growth, innovation and delivering even more value to its customers in the agricultural aviation sector.

Tabula will continue to make the business of aerial application easier and safer, even as the jobs grow more complex. CEO John Enlow says, “Tabula’s mission is to help our customers protect and grow the value of their productive land now and for future generations to come. We’re changing our name because we’re looking to the future. While this will be an evolution for us, it is not a transformation. The name change to Tabula will better reflect our expanded capabilities and future vision.”

As Tabula, the company will provide an even more comprehensive suite of solutions for landowners, contractors, and aviators, spanning health and safety, job management, compliance, and more. Customers can expect the same great products and services delivered by the same team. Enlow concluded, “We’ll continue to evolve our solutions under Tabula - just as we’ve done under TracMap. It’s all aimed at bringing certainty to customers’ operations and reporting, enhancing their productivity, and building a knowledge bank of valuable data”. The name Tabula is inspired by the ancient practice of recording information on flat, portable surfaces called tabulae. Ingenious record keepers and skilled cartographers of the past laid the foundation for the modern-day tablet and map. By adopting the name Tabula, it embraces the company’s roots in mapping and its commitment to recording vital data while looking ahead to a future of continued innovation.

Tabula strengthens job management capabilities for the Aerial Application Industry with the acquisition of CLASS Software.

MAP Computer Systems and their flagship product CLASS have been supporting the Job Management needs of the Aerial Application Industry for 25 years. The software is based on the principles and concepts developed over the years through

consultation with aerial operators Australia-wide, ensuring it meets the aviation sector’s specific requirements.

Report Illegal Drone Applications!

NAAA receives constant reports from commercial manned and unmanned aerial application businesses about drone application work that is being conducted outside of the law. NAAA has been told that unregistered drone activities, in addition to allegations that label directions, including required gallons of carrier per acre, active ingredient measurements per acre and boom length limits, are being violated. Professional commercial applicators that apply by air—either as part of a farming business or a separate aerial application business—must be licensed.

A small drone that weighs less than 55 pounds can be flown for work or business if the operator becomes an FAA-certified drone pilot under Federal Aviation Regulations, Part 107. Those requirements, including registering one’s drone, may be found here.

To operate a drone over 55 pounds, an operator must follow the requirements under 49 U.S.C. 44807, which can be found here.

An aerial application—whether manned or unmanned— conducted by a farmer or commercial applicator must also have an agricultural aviation operator certificate under 14 CFR Part 137. Those requirements may be found here.

In addition, an aerial applicator, whether manned or unmanned, making a commercial application must be licensed as a professional commercial applicator in the state(s) in which they are operating. A list of the state pesticide enforcement agencies that license commercial applicators may be found here. Most states are treating drone applications the same as manned aerial applications, which means drone operators must follow all label instructions in the aerial section of the label, including droplet size, application height and boom length.

Enforcement against an individual or persons violating these provisions can be taken by reporting violations to the state pesticide enforcement officials, found here, or the FAA’s Flight Standards District Offices, found here.

Insurable Interest -

Stake Your Claim

Summer is upon us, and ag season is getting into full swing. But with more activity comes an increased risk of claims.

There are a lucky few operators who pride themselves on never having had a claim. Nearly everyone else is not that fortunate. Whether you have or haven’t, now is a good time to think about why you should turn in a claim and what to expect if and when you do.

Is everyone ok? That’s the first thing your agent should ask if you or one of your pilots has had an accident. The well-being of the pilot is of the utmost importance. Maintaining good records is critical in this circumstance because claims adjusters will likely want copies of the pilot’s log book, medical, the last completed pilot history form, etc.

Do I need to turn this in? That’s a question we producers get more often than you might think. Our guidance is always to turn in the claim. Some operators opt to take care of it themselves but be warned that the cost of either a hull or liability claim could easily get out of control. If that’s the case and you later have a change of heart, you cannot

assume your insurance company will defend you if the claim isn’t reported in a timely manner.

What’s my deductible? Take special note of your deductibles when you receive your renewal quote or policy. In a majority of policies, there is no deductible for liability claims. For hull claims, however, a relatively small Not In Motion deductible is tied to an In Motion deductible that is, in many cases, equal to 5% of the aircraft’s insured value if it is a turbine. Some insurance companies provide the benefit of a waiver of the In Motion deductible for the first covered hull claim. You would avoid paying several thousand dollars out of pocket if the first hull claim of your policy period is a costly prop strike.

I’ve got a drift claim. Chemical drift claims happen every year, some more than others. If there’s even a suggestion that you drifted to someone’s hedgerow, call your agent so they can, at the very least, put the insurance company on notice for the potential of a drift claim. Operators are fortunate that most growers are reasonable and only ask to be made whole. But there are situations when contact with a grower isn’t pleasant. That’s why it’s good for an operator to have the even hand of the insurance company on their side to negotiate a settlement that all parties can live with.

Hopping into the Ag Industry

Dan Tonner’s awareness of aviation came at almost infancy. In fact, there is photographic evidence of that very moment; it was when his Air Force Pilot uncle flew his jet from Del Rio, Texas to see Dan and his family at the airport in Sioux City, Iowa.

“He put me up in the cockpit for a picture with him, and I’m pretty sure that was the start of my interest in aviation,” Dan recalls.

Uncle Henry transitioned to civilian life, and for 30 years was a pilot for Delta Airlines. Throughout much of that time, Dan had in Henry a close aviation connection to guide him even before he set foot in an airplane.

“One of my best aviation memories as a pilot, myself, was a time while I was flying a DC9 freight plane out of Memphis. I checked in with Memphis Center as we were climbing to altitude, then I hear my uncle on Center frequency say, 'Is that you, Danny?' I knew it was him right away because no one called me Danny unless they knew me when I was a kid. So we both ended up in the same airspace at least once.”

After flying cargo, Dan eased into corporate flights, but was eventually laid off. It was when he took a contract job flying in Iraq that his brother-in-law, Roy Sharp, who had worked with a local Iowa operator named Willie Hoppe, learned that Willie was ill. Willie approached Roy, a farmer, about buying Hoppe Airspray.

“Over the course of a year or more, we discussed buying Willie’s business,” Dan says. “And then in June 2009 we signed all the paperwork and bought Hoppe Airspray. I had never really been involved in owning a business, especially in agriculture, so it was more Roy who had the confidence to

pull the trigger on what looked to be a large undertaking. I’m glad because it has been a great experience.”

While Dan was an experienced pilot, he had never flown ag. But after the business was purchased, he attended a course at Riggin Flight Service in South Dakota to learn the ropes and soon planted himself on the operation’s roster of pilots.

Willie Hoppe remained involved with his namesake flying service for two more seasons, but sadly passed away in 2010. At that time, the operation had about 10 seasonal employees. Today, there are three full-time employees and 12 seasonal staff.

“We also hire several contract airplanes from other operators to help with our season, and we couldn’t do it without them,” Dan explains. “Some of them have been sending planes to help us since we bought the business in 2009.”

34 | agairupdate.com

Dan’s wife of 31 years, Jeannie, an elementary school teacher, also pitches in when the business needs her. The couple is not only proud business owners, but also proud parents of two daughters who have made successful lives for themselves in Des Moines and Chicago.

“I think the outlook for ag aviation is still very good for the future. There will obviously be changes, such as the use of drones. Overall, I believe manned aircraft will still do the overwhelming majority of applications for many years to come.”

Part of that good future hinges on what Dan believes is key to continued success and growth: new ag pilots.

“Transitioning new pilots into the aerial application industry is very important. I also believe these pilots need to be mentored and supervised as much as possible. We all know how quickly things can go wrong when we first start flying in the ag aviation environment. Any extra efforts we as operators and experienced pilots can do to help a new pilot to be trained and safe is well worth it.”

Although Dan’s journey through aviation has carried him to the world’s furthest reaches since he sat on the edge of a T-38 jet as a toddler, he can now look back to see that the journey has taken him full circle.

“There weren’t many ag operators in Western Iowa when I was growing up, but I did know Rodney Hughes, who flew an Ag Cat from the Primghar Airport. He was always nice to me as a kid when I rode my bike out to his hangar to look at his airplane. I was always amazed at how loud his plane was when it took off. Fast forward 40 years, and now I fly a turbine Ag Cat from the same Primghar strip every season.”

Unscheduled Events, FOD

As I began thinking about this topic, I realized several of us might not know what the acronym means. FOD can stand for two different but associated things. The first acronym meaning is Foreign Object Debris. When people say FOD damage, they are using this meaning. The second meaning is Foreign Object Damage. When we discuss engine components with damage due to ingestion, this is

the meaning we reference. For instance, the blade requires repair due to FOD.

The first thing I always bring up regarding FOD is that the event may be insurable. If an incident cannot be repaired on wing, contact your insurance company to determine if your event is insurable on your policy. ➤

The engine maintenance manual doesn’t specifically call out FOD until you get further into the manual. Instead, it discusses material ingestion with specific callouts for bird strikes or “soft material” ingestion inspections. If material remains are found on the 1st stage compressor blades, it indicates that soft material has been ingested. We had this happen not too long ago. A customer said his performance had changed after a bird strike. The inspection calls out possible contamination of the gas path. We found “material” left over from a bird strike had contaminated the bleed valve, leading to improper function. A little cleaning and washing got him back in the air quickly. Suppose you have this type of occurrence, and the engine is to remain in service after soft material ingestion. In that case, a performance recovery wash must be done per the maintenance manual.

If other material goes into the compressor, such as stones, ice, etc., you must inspect the compressor and determine the next course of action. Part of this inspection requirement is a performance run to ensure the compressor operation has not been compromised. If performance is acceptable, but there is damage on the compressor, you must decide if the FOD is acceptable. Inspection historically has been accomplished with the use of a mirror and flashlight. Due to heightened concerns about erosion of the PT6A-67s, a borescope is now necessary to make determinations of damage. A borescope is a convenient tool to help you make the proper decisions.

If the damage found on the compressor, from either FOD or erosion, is within acceptable limits, you might decide to continue operation without repair. Per the engine maintenance manual, you can take an “acceptable without repair” path. Yes, that is right, acceptable WITHOUT repair. But, you knew a but was coming; if the engine with acceptable damage remains in service without repair, the FOD must be inspected again in 100 hours. Subsequent inspections are up to you but must not exceed 400 hours. All of this is based upon acceptable performance.

There are blend repairs in the manual to prevent unnecessary engine removal. You must remember that the engine maintenance manual has some specific limits and directions that will help limit the performance loss that the compressor could experience. A performance run must again be performed post-repair. The post-repair performance may be so negatively impacted that the engine must be removed to address the performance loss.

There are a handful of items that you cannot address on wing. Unacceptable damage includes tears, cracks, tip curl and sharp edges. Repairing FOD on wing is not the simplest of tasks, as there is limited access to the affected parts. You need to document any repairs you accomplish and keep the inlet and airbox as clean as possible. Don’t forget your air filter maintenance; this is the first line of protection against FOD. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us. We are here to help you.

Those Pesky Inversions

Being an ag pilot is challenging, and sometimes it seems as if Mother Nature is in a bad mood, trying to sabotage all efforts by ag pilots to get the job done. Susceptible crops bordering the area to be treated are always downwind. Whenever there is an unexpected massive outbreak of pests, the winds will stay just above limits for days on end. That line of severe thunderstorms forecast for tomorrow arrives today and grounds the fleet. In these kinds of situations, patience is indeed a virtue.

Some of Mother Nature’s tricks aren’t so obvious and upfront. One of the most insidious has to do with atmospheric inversions. One of my first experiences with these weather

demons happened while I was checking a wheat field to assess the amount of volunteer canola present from the previous year’s crop. An AgTruck treating the field next door really caught my attention, given how still and cool the air had become.

There were a few low-lying areas where the fog had already started to form, and I could see from my vantage point less than a quarter of a mile away that the spray was not going down. In fact, it was hanging about 6 feet off the ground as a ghostly white mist. More to the point, the topography was a gentle downslope from the field being treated to a nearby ravine, and you could see the suspended spray droplets slowly but surely flowing downhill toward the ravine. ➤

This is never a good situation, but it can be costly when the pesticide being applied harms susceptible crops. You don’t want any drift damage incidents because they can really eat into the bottom line, not to mention the financial grief that can result for the farmers whose crop has been damaged.

How bad can it get? If a crop is being sold for $20 per bushel, every bushel that doesn’t make it into the storage bin due to drift damage (or other factors) means the farm’s bottom line takes a hit. If the crop could typically produce 40 bushels per acre, every acre where the yield has essentially become zero results in an $800 reduction in returns. Every ten acres result in a reduction of $8000. In short, bad things add up in a hurry.

How could that happen? All too quickly, for one thing. In today’s age of very large equipment and field sizes, you must be aware of the damage neighboring crops could sustain from off-site drift.

Let’s take, for example, an AT-802 applying herbicide on wheat next door to a canola field, with both fields being two miles long. With an 85-foot swath, the AT covers approximately 20 acres per two-mile run in 50 seconds. If an inversion is present along with a one mph wind that causes the suspended spray to drift over and destroy

the same acres of canola covered in a single swath, the tab for off-site drift comes to $800/acre x 20 acres = $16,000!

Keep in mind it could even get worse as small spray droplets can be transported horizontally, sometimes for miles, before dropping on and causing damage to sensitive targets.

Indications of a Temperature Inversion

Those who live in mountainous areas or even areas with rolling terrain are quite familiar with temperature inversions, where cold air descends into valleys and other low-lying areas. Just driving down a road into a valley, you can feel the undeniable cool air as you descend downhill. Same with municipalities such as Los Angeles, where the pollutants, car exhaust, and industrial smoke get trapped on top of the cold layer, producing that well-known smog phenomenon.

According to the National Weather Service Glossary, an inversion exists if the temperature at 8–10 feet above the ground is higher than the temperature at 6–12 inches. If you have the capability to measure both temperatures, you will have a direct indicator if an inversion is present or not. Remember that the more significant the temperature difference between the two levels, the more intense and stable the inversion will be. ➤

Causes of Inversions

A short reminder of how inversions develop will help in dealing with them. They are not uncommon in ag applications, and one of the first indications is when you start getting spray droplets from the previous swath on the windscreen reducing visibility, particularly when flying into the sun. Or, in the turn to the next swath, you look back and see the spray from the last swath hanging in the air.

Near sunset, the earth’s surface cools rapidly due to radiation cooling. As a direct result, the air near the surface is also cooled rapidly, resulting in cooler air being below and warmer air aloft, the opposite of the normal lapse rate.

Another way to test for an inversion is by lighting a small fire and observing the smoke. If the smoke hangs in the air and moves off slowly without dissipating, you have an inversion present, and it’s time to hangar the aircraft.

To summarize, the times when you are most likely to get an inversion are:

• Early mornings when overnight skies were clear, and wind speeds were low.

• Early evenings when an inversion can begin to form a few hours before sunset.

• Nighttime when an inversion is already present and may intensify overnight.

Ag aviation is not an easy job. But dealing successfully with inversions is well within our control and one that can go a long way towards minimizing or eliminating drift issues.

If the smoke is hanging, hang up the spurs. While it is very tempting to do “just one last pass,” damaging your crop through off-site drift is one thing. Damaging others is just not worth the risk.

DSU Aviation Certifies First Class of New Ag Pilots

CLEVELAND, Miss. — The first ten students from the Commercial Aviation Department at Delta State University to graduate with an Agricultural Aviation Operations Career Pathway Certification were recognized during a ceremony Friday, June 2 in the DSU airport hangar at Cleveland Municipal Airport.

Colonel Brad MacNealy, Director of Flight Operations for the Commercial Aviation Department said, “We’ve got what we feel is the premier aerial applicator course not only in the country, but in the world. We are sitting in

the middle of the best farmland in the world. We have a university with an aviation program. We have all of the agricultural expertise right in our back yard. It’s the perfect partnership.”

MacNealy pointed out that completion of this program allowed the graduates to be hired by an aerial applicator business without incurring increased insurance costs, removing one of the largest hurdles for new ag pilots. “The insurance benefits from this program are huge,” he said. ➤

Glen Holloway, an ag pilot from Drew and Mississippi’s representative to the National Association of Aerial Applicators was on hand for the ceremony and said, “The national association is extremely excited about this program because it has been needed for a long time. The median age for ag pilots right now is in the upper 50’s, so in the next decade or so, there is going to be more of a shortage than

there is now. We are really excited to be associated with Delta State.”

The program was the result of DSU’s collaboration with area ag pilots, the Cleveland Airport Board, and many others. Ike Brunetti of Brunetti Flying Service in Shelby was instrumental in organizing the program, and guided the new

pilots and their instructors as the program developed. He spoke to the pilots and the friends, family and supporters assembled in the hangar, saying, “Dreams have to have goals without goals they are only dreams.”

Mississippi Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith was set to be the keynote speaker, but a midnight vote on the debt ceiling deal Thursday kept her from being able to attend. Instead, she sent her regards and comments via video. She said, “Today, we celebrate your graduation and certification in an area of great importance to Mississippi and our nationagricultural aviation. ➤

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Little Guy

Big Guy

KILBOURNE, IL — Al Baker is a man who can fly almost anything and fly it well. Al took his first instruction flight in 1964 and has logged over 18,000 hours. He started his ag-air business in 1974. Located in Kilbourne, Illinois, near his childhood home. Al also has an extensive background in electronics. This year marks his retirement from the agair business, as Al has sold his business to a fellow area crop duster, Chuck Holzwarth. However, Al does help out occasionally during extremely busy times.

Chuck Holzwarth, who now owns the business, is also a very accomplished pilot and businessman. Chuck has logged many hours during his long career and is widely respected in the business.

A small, local group of radio-controlled aviation builders and pilots in the Kilbourne area, some of who have been flying together for 30 years, have been flying their craft at Al’s air strip. Several years ago, Al was kind enough to allow them to use a portion of his airstrip for an R/C flying site and they have been there ever since.

Because of Al’s generosity over the years. the R/C group decided to do something for him as a gesture of their appreciation. Using photographs and drawings from Al’s Air Tractor AT-401 owner’s manual, a scale model of his AT401 was built and presented to him. The 98-inch wingspan

model is airworthy, although it was decided not to risk any “downdrafts”, so the model has never flown.

It is an interesting fact that most R/C modelers have a very profound interest in aviation and aircraft. They are generally quite knowledgeable about their favorite aircraft and in some cases all types of aircraft. One person in the group actually works in research and development for the largest model airplane manufacturer/distributor in the world and states that a number of people with aircraft engineering degrees are working in that industry. ➤

These models usually fly quite well and some are extremely accurate in the scale details. Another interesting fact is the number of high profile airshow pilots that are actually R/C pilots or supporters of those growing numbers of R/C actually works out new aerobatic maneuvers with his model aircraft prior to working on it in his full-sized aerobatic plane. enthusiasts. Pilots such as Matt Chapman, Bobby Younkin, Jim LeRoy, and Patty Wagstaff all have shown an interest in the hobby/sport R/C flying. Some pilots like Chapman and Younkin are even long time R/C pilots themselves and Bobby Younkin R/C modelers truly enjoy being able to fly their aircraft at Al’s facility, as there are a great number of opportunities

to watch and listen to those great Air Tractors working. The sounds of that big radial chewing air on a take-off run in the early morning quiet is quite a thing to experience.

A member of the group stated that a simple thanks to Al and Chuck seems like such a small thing considering their kindness to allow us to use the air strip. Even though there are a great deal of differences in what the R/C modelers and crop dusters do, the mutual love of aviation and respect for those who do it on a daily basis definitely exists between them. Even though the R/C modelers only fly small remote-controlled airplanes, their interest and dedication to aviation is as large as anyone’s.

Precisa Aeroagrícola: Female Persistence in Tocantins, First Woman to Serve as President of SINDAG

Situated in the state of Tocantins, near the city of Lagoa da Confusão, I visited an interesting ag-aviation operation. Precisa Aeroagrícola, Ltda. is owned and operated by husband and wife team Hoana Almeida Santos and Flávio Cunha Lemos Filho.

The company’s roots started with Hoana and her first husband, Jorge Alberto Gomes Lindemaier. The company became Precisa Aero Agricola, Ltda in April 2006. In those early years, the aircraft were flown from Hoana’s family farm, where Hoana and Jorge built an airstrip. Unfortunately, Jorge passed away two years later due to medical reasons. It was then that Hoana took over the company, facing several hurdles due to prejudice, since the industry, at the time, was mostly male. But even in the face of many adversities, Hoana proved she could overcome any challenge.

The company became a new model from then on, focusing on a non-stop drive for knowledge and better customer service.

In 2016, Hoana married again to agronomist Flávio Cunha Lemos Filho, who years later became a partner at Precisa, and since then, they have stayed together in the quest to improve customer service by adapting to new technologies, investing in employee training and developing a more humane environment in the company, as the couple believes that a competitive company is one that understands the value of teamwork. Although neither Hoana nor Flávio are agricultural pilots, they work together to manage its daily operations and finances.

Precisa covers over 150,000 hectares during a season. The business continued to grow. In early 2022, the company bought a new AT-402B from DP Aviação. By mid-July, in the first 70 days of flying, the AT-402B logged over 375 hours.

Husband and wife team Hoana Almeida Santos and Flávio Cunha Lemos Filho.

Flávio explained, “Since we bought the 402, everyone likes it very much; its pilot, the company employees and, importantly, our clients are very satisfied with it. Because of the 402, we have been able to expand the company. In March and April of 2022, it was flown to Maramhão State to treat cotton. This was the first time the company treated cotton, and it was because of the 402.”

Rice is the major crop treated by Precisa, making up 90% of all applications by the company. Between the rice season, other crops are treated, making up the remaining 10%; corn, watermelons, soya and beans. Typically, from November to May are the months of the rice season. Treating other crops occurs from May to September. October is considered the off-season month when maintenance is done, and everyone rests for the upcoming busy months.

Presently, Precisa operates one AT-402B with a PT6A15AG and two Ipanemas, an EMB-202A and a 201A. These aircraft operate from their primary 800-meter runway. Precisa also uses an additional 20-25 airstrips to be closer to the fields they are treating. Often, animals cross runways near Bananal, an island on the Araguaia River in the southwest of Tocantins. It is the secondlargest river island in the world, covering over 19,000 square kilometers.

All Precisa aircraft are outfitted with Travicar GPS units and nozzles. Application rates are 20-30 liters per hectare for fungicide, herbicide and insecticide applications. Some growers request Zanoni rotary atomizers. This application rate is 10-15 liters per hectare for the rotary atomizers, and are only used for insecticide applications. ➤

STOL dry spreaders are used to apply fertilizers. For rice, the application rate is typically 80 kilograms per hectare for three applications of 30-0-20 ammonium sulfate or 46% urea, depending on the fertilizer’s cost and the request of the agronomist. STOL spreaders are also used to apply cover crops on soya.

In its 17-year history, Precisa has stood out in the agricultural sector for its excellence in aerial spraying services. Hoana observes that each member of the

Precisa team is 100% engaged in the daily effort to keep customers pleased.

Hoana is well-liked by Precisa’s growers, says Flávio, and she does an excellent job dealing with them. Precisa’s clients like working with Hoana, and so do her colleagues in agricultural aviation. Hoana is also the first woman to sit on the SINDAG Board of Directors in its 32 years since it was founded, and now she is the first woman to serve as the President of SINDAG.

A WING AND A PRAYER

A Lifestyle of Being Led by God’s Holy Spirit

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God” (Romans 8:14). Almost everyone has to get out into this sinful world to make a living for our family. What really demonstrates whether we are led by God’s Spirit, or not, is how we react to the circumstances of our life. Before trusting in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior we are naturally governed and ruled by our sinful nature (Ephesians 2:1-3). We didn’t have a choice; we are natural born sinners because we inherited Adam’s sin nature. After we are born again and sealed by the Holy Spirit of God (Ephesians 1:1-14) we are a new creation in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:17). God doesn’t leave Christians to our own worldly wisdom. God the Father has sent the Holy Spirit to live in all Christians to teach and lead us (John 14:16, 26). “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16).

The primary way God’s Spirit leads Christians is through opening our mind to understanding God’s Word, the Bible. Christians have to make a determined effort to study God’s Word to know what God expects from us in our earthly life (2 Timothy 2:15). “Show me Your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truths and teach me” (Psalm 25:4-5). David wrote, “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word…Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:9, 11). Solomon wrote, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). God’s Word is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). Obedience to God’s Word always produces the spiritual fruit of love, joy, peace, patience,

kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and selfcontrol (Galatians 5:22-23).

Christians with a strong desire to be led by the Holy Spirit will have the determination to overrule our sinful nature and allow God’s Spirit to lead us. The Holy Spirit doesn’t force us to obey God’s perfect will for our life. We cannot be led by the Holy Spirit until we voluntarily surrender our life to Him. Christians are to grow spiritually; and spiritual growth doesn’t come easy, it takes a strong effort on our part. Yielding to the leadership of the Holy Spirit involves every second of every day of our life. “God guides the humble in justice, and God teaches the humble His way” (Psalm 25:9). Religious pride always hinders a Christian’s spiritual growth! It’s easy to look spiritual in church; but not so easy to deny our sinful nature and be led by God’s Spirit in our everyday life! “Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time” (1 Peter 5:6).

The Holy Spirit was poured out on the apostles and they became unstoppable in their witness for Jesus Christ (Acts 2:1-47). The work of the Holy Spirit was so powerful in the lives of the apostles that they didn’t fear anyone or anything, not even their own death. When they were threatened Peter said, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to Him? You be the judges! As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:19-20). The Holy Spirit directed Peter’s mission to the Gentiles (Acts 10). The Holy Spirit directed Paul and Barnabas on their missionary journeys (Act 13:1-3). God uses Holy Spirit led Christians to accomplish His purposes on this earth! God always honors His children who are being led by His Spirit! If the Holy Spirit isn’t leading the local church it is nothing more than a social club.

66 | agairupdate.com

the lives of Christians we become an unstoppable force demonstrating God’s love to all humanity.

The saying “Garbage in, garbage out” is usually true. Christians cannot put sinful thoughts and motives into our mind and expect godly things to come from our life. Christians who saturate their mind with the Word of God will know how to live for God. Christians must train our mind to react in our earthly circumstances just like Jesus Christ would. This can only happen when we allow God’s Holy Spirit to control our life; and that takes determination and commitment to our spiritual growth. Christians cannot live a perfect life in our earthly body, but Christians can eliminate much of our sinful attitudes, motives, thoughts, words and actions if we get under the control of God’s Word. Christians who get their mind filled with the truth of God’s Word will know how to keep our sinful nature under control and allow the Holy Spirit to control our thoughts, words and actions. It is impossible to live a godly life in this satanically controlled world without the leading of God’s Spirit. “The Spirit gives life; the sinful nature counts for nothing” (John 6:63). “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23).

PERSPECTIVE
Farmer regina.farmer@chem-man.com
Canadian Agricultural Aviation Association Convention REGINA’S
Regina

I can now mark “Travelling to Canada” off my bucket list! The trip was an eye-opening experience! The trip had its ups and downs but what an adventure!

One of the funniest things I was teased about was traveling to “Regina,” and my first name being Regina (pronounced differently). It was opening to see the large airport say, “Welcome to Regina.” I didn’t have my glasses on and thought it was welcoming me!

I wasn’t prepared for the large lines and constantly having to show my id and passport. It wasn’t obvious, especially when it’s the first time you’ve ever had to do this. Next time I will allow for more time and possibly learn some possible faster workarounds.

We made a few mistakes, such as not converting our money into Canadian cash. This was needed when our rental car’s tire became low on a site-seeing tour, and we needed coins to get our tire aired up. I finally bargained with a cashier to buy multiple maple syrup beef jerky and give me change from a credit card, and it worked out.

The four of us (Drake, Phil and Amy, along with me) knew to bundle up; of course, it was frigid. The

convention was great, and it was fun to hear the Canadian accents! We have customers in Canada, but this was the first time we’ve been to one of their conventions.

As with the U.S. conventions, the accents are slightly different, but the people are so friendly and good as gold. We even saw a few of our vendor friends! We met a lot of new friends in Canada as well!

Our trip home was a little rough. Our first flight was delayed to another place in Canada, and we missed our 2nd flight. There was no representative to help us, so we just got on our phones and flew to Michigan and then Memphis. We had very little time, but we made it! It was so good to arrive in Memphis. However, our luggage didn’t (sigh).

After a week, we finally got our luggage and immediately bought luggage to go in the overhead bin for our future trips. (I’ll have to learn not to carry so many shoes!).

What an experience we had!

As with all of my ag friends all over the world, fly safe!

New Microsoft Flight Simulator Set to Feature Ag Aviation and Aerial Firefighting

Although details are still light, the latest version of Microsoft’s second foray into the flight simulation world in over a decade will likely feature aerial firefighting as a mission in the eagerly anticipated Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, with early shots showing the ability to fight fires in a CL-415 and Erickson Air Crane. Also seen in their website is a screenshot of a Cessna C-188 equipped with spray booms. The C-188 also appears in a video trailer of the simulator, spraying a crop. No GPS lightbar is visible, however.

Microsoft has received mixed user feedback after their Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, was widely panned for having only fixed-wing aircraft and woefully inadequate flight model characteristics. Purists also lamented that the product was now more aimed at the game genre, being marketed as also available on the company’s X-box console.

Microsoft had been an avid participant in the flight simulator market since the early 90s when rudimentary graphics powered a very basic simulation experience, moving forward over the years to more and more immersive flight experiences with FS2000, through to the company’s last product, Microsoft Flight Simulator X, which until 2020 was announced as the company’s last product in the flight simulation market after selling the commercial rights to

MSFSX to Lockheed Martin, who developed their own standalone simulator based off that code, named Lockheed P3D which is still in use as the back end simulation software of several commercially built simulators in the aerial firefighting market.

As a video posted on YouTube shows, the graphic interface appears to be stunning, although simulation enthusiasts are carefully optimistic that the new aerial firefighting and search and rescue operation options will provide a new layer of complexity for the once much-loved title that has gone on to assist thousands with the basics of flight training.

An Ecuadorian pilot performing aerial application work recently posted a nw viral tweet that included a video of what appears to be a large bird dangling from a hole in the front windhsield of the aircraft.

The pilot was struck in the face by the bird as it entered the cockpit, as seen in the video as the pilot pans the camera back to show him covered in blood as the aircraft returning to a local airfield.

The pilot, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, although bloody, was still able to land the aircraft safely, despite having severly limited visibility due to the bird still being wedged inside the cockpit.

The posted video is one of two videos posted on the incident to social media, the second posted by ground crew showing the aircraft as it arrives back at base after the incident with front window damage evident.

Spidertracks empowers the aviation industry with realtime aircraft management and proactive safety decisions. Committed to enhancing aviation safety, Spidertracks assists thousands of aviators worldwide to ensure their teams return home safely every day.

This decision marks a significant milestone in the journey of these two businesses, uniting their already complimentary efforts towards a common goal and addressing critical, unserved needs in the global aviation industry. The merger amplifies the strengths of the two businesses, creating a unified front in enhancing safety and operational efficiency in the aviation industry. The merged businesses will deliver a unified software platform that leverages the strengths of each company's offerings and expands the suite of services available to customers, while allowing for a rapidly accelerated, shared product roadmap that will deliver unparalleled value to the market.

As part of the merger, Aleks Banas, CEO of Air Maestro, will take over the CEO role of the combined business, with Steve Whitaker, Spidertracks’ CPO and COO, transitioning to COO.

Aleks remarked, “the Aviation industry is poorly served by a fragmented collection of sub-scale, legacy businesses. Most at some degree of scale are owned by short-term-oriented, financially focused private equity or venture capital firms that have no long-term vision for or staying power in this market. By combining Air Maestro and Spidertracks, we will immediately be one of the largest global players in the

space, offering the most comprehensive and capable suite of solutions to the commercial aviation market.”

Paul Yancich, co-founder and Managing Director of Arcadea group, went on to say, “Air Maestro and Spidertracks have long been solving different elements of the same fundamental challenge within aviation: how to operate a profitable, successful flight organization without ever sacrificing quality, safety, or efficiency. This is a monumental challenge, and, until this merger, no single business could come close to serving customers’ entire needs.”

Steve Whitaker, COO, added, “We’ve heard clearly from the market that they want fewer vendors with expanded capabilities and more modern technology. Our newly formed business will be the only vendor in the world that can truly provide an end-to-end safety, operations, tracking, FDM, FOQA, and fleet management solution. And while we’re thrilled at our current combined capabilities, we will be investing materially to bring far more functionality to market in the near-term.”

Arcadea Group is excited to shepherd this new growth phase for Air Maestro and Spidertracks. The firm is confident that the resulting synergies will lead to improved products and services for customers, a safer and more efficient aviation community, and a stronger competitive advantage in the marketplace.

For more information about this strategic merger and the impact it will have on the aviation industry, please contact Aleksandra Banas (abanas@airmaestro.net).

LOW & SLOW

Mabry I. Anderson An Insider’s History of Agricultural Aviation

The Early Days Down South —

Chapter One continued…

"Mr. Henry," Metcalf recounts, "was just about deaf from all of that pounding he'd taken from aircraft engines and he couldn't hear a J-5 at idling. To tune up a freshly majored engine, he would hang it on the old Travel Air, roll it out on the concrete ramp, start it up, and bring the throttle settling back to idling. Then he would crawl under the plane and lie down with his ear against the concrete where he could 'feel' each individual firing of a cylinder. After listening a little while, he would crawl out, make a few timing or carburetor adjustments, and then lie down and listen again. After a while, he would get up, nod his head as if satisfied, and shut the engine down. They were always timed perfectly!"

Elliott also had a very high regard for his own flying ability. Once shortly after the beginning of World War II, a group of young and eager pilots began good-naturedly kidding Henry about being a"seat-of-the-the-pants pilot." Henry grinned, nodded in agreement, and said, "You're exactly right. I am a seat-of-thepants pilot and I'm glad of it because I've got more flying brains in my butt than you boys have got in your heads!" Henry Elliott was a true pioneer, participating from the onset and winding up in the cockpit when he was well up into his seventies.

Late one afternoon, virtually in the dark, he turned in to land on his own airstrip and hung the gear on a line that he had safely crossed hundreds of times. The ship went in and "Pop" Elliott, probably the world's oldest crop duster, was killed on impact. The industry had lost one of its most valuable contributors.

Business continued to flourish in the Cotton Belt, particularly from 1925 to 1927, when the company began utilizing more and more demonstration flights and newspaper advertising. Large farms were the rule of the day, especially in the Mississippi-Arkansas-Louisiana Delta, and big planters ·were given every opportunity to see and use aircraft. Demonstrations would be set up on large farms and advertised widely.

One such demonstration occurred near Clarkdale, Arkansas on September 15, 1926, and was widely advertised under the auspices and signature of R. Brinkley Snowden, Jr., of Hughes, Arkansas, one of the largest and most prominent planters in the world. Among other things, a handbill advertising this demonstration stated that aircraft dusting was "the only known practical method for the control of hoppers, weevils, and worms on large acreage." ➤

This handbill, under the Huff-Daland logo, also carried the company motto, "It doesn't cost to dust-it costs not to."

This type promotion paid off and by 1927 Huff-Daland Dusters had worked more cotton than all other dusting firms combined, although it should be pointed out that virtually no real competition existed. A few intrepid early birdmen had jeny-rigged a handful of aircraft and did an occasional job, but actually Huff-Daland was virtually alone in the industry at this time. In aircraft circles and in related industries, the company was recognized as the leader and, as early as 1925, firms that produced products relating to aircraft capitalized on this fame. In an advertisement in the July 1925 issue of Aero Digest, Valentine Paint Company, makers of Valspar varnish, used a full page telling about "Cotton Dusting by Airplane," with two photos of Huff-Daland planes at work. Among other things, the ad stated that, "This method of poisoning is carried on by specially built planes which are capable of dusting an area of 300 to 1,000 acres an hour! These planes are Valsparred, of course!”

In spite of good business, it was a seasonal operation with the majority of work confined to the peak boll weevil period from late July through September. As a consequence, C.E. Woolman, always a promoter, headed south for Peru in 1926, determined to find another “season” for his aircraft in a country where the growing seasons were reversed.

Woolman, with no knowledge of the language and accompanied by pilot “Toots” Hansen, took along several cans of movie film depicting his aircraft at work and also gambled heavily by shipping parts for five dusters to Peru by steamboat. Necessary ground equipment also went along, since he was convinced that business would be forthcoming.

As usual, Woolman had reckoned correctly and from the beginning the operation was quite successful. Initially, the operation was confined to two fertile valleys. But within a year, it had expanded to seven of Peru’s most heavily-farmed areas. This Peruvian fleet utilized a logo painted on the side of the aircraft that showed a man riding a llama, the native, domesticated, camel-like animal that was common throughout much of mountainous South America.

Both the American and Peruvian operations flourished. But in 1928, Woolman returned to Monroe, Louisiana, to discover to his dismay that the parent company of HuffDaland was attempting to sell off the dusting division to bail the company out of a financial crisis! Undaunted, Woolman and a group of local businessmen arranged financing and bought out the Huff-Daland interest in the dusting firm. This company was now completely financed by Southern capital and was, as a consequence, renamed “Delta Air Service,” for the Mississippi Delta region that it served. The new firm’s board of directors included Woolman, C.H. McHenry, Travis Oliver, D.Y. Smith, and M.S. Biedenharn. All of the dusting division’s assets were taken over, including most of the personnel.

Huff-Daland Aircraft also released tools and equipment, manufacturing jigs, data, and drawings pertaining to the aircraft, which would enable Delta Air Service to virtually manufacture these aircraft in its own shops.

While this transaction was underway, a revolution broke out in Peru and both sides began looking enviously at Delta’s aircraft! Woolman quickly arranged a sale to a Peruvian firm and moved the rest of the operation back to Monroe. It appears that pilot “Toots” Hansen remained in Peru, at least for a time, and continued to work with the new Peruvianowned firm.

Northward and to the east of Monroe, Louisiana, which lies near the center of the state not far from the Arkansas border, the land is flat, generally open, and highly fertile. It blends unnoticeably into the alluvial delta lands of Mississippi and Arkansas, following the course of the Mississippi River to Cairo, Illinois, some 350 miles away.

In Louisiana, ghostly Spanish moss hangs from the ancient cypress and oaks and the entire delta country is criss-crossed with cypress-studded bayous, lakes, natural marshes, and steamy woodland. Its colors are green and brown; monotonous to a stranger, but with a certain brooding beauty that grows on people, particularly if they like aircraft, lush farmland, hunting, fishing, or just plain drifting.

The lakes and streams throughout this area are some of the loveliest in the world and, for the most part, teem with fish. The forest lands that border these waterways are flat, junglethick, and filled with wildlife, especially deer, wild turkey, and squirrels. Hunting, fishing, and farming are a way of life with the people of this region, where it seems that life moves along at a somewhat slower tempo than it does in most areas of America.

Into this somewhat idyllic setting came Delta Air Service. The nearness of the multi-thousand acre cotton plantations beckoned the intrepid crop dusters like the legendary Medusa of ancient mythology. Also like Medusa, it lured numerous young pilots to an early demise in their flimsy, unpredictable aircraft of the day.

But the lure of flying was too strong and the insidious boll weevil that ravished the crops year after year had to be fought. By 1929, Delta Air Service was going strong, having inherited all assets of the original Huff-Daland Dusters, Inc., and permanently establishing itself in Monroe.

“If you’ve ever chopped cotton,” commented Gene Berry, shop superintendent for Delta Air Service, in an interview published in the March 1967 Delta Digest, “you might come to understand how I came to work for Delta. This was at the beginning of the Depression and I had just gotten out of business school. A friend and I had been given IO acres of cotton land to work; jobs were scarce so we planted and worked that cotton. One day we had been chopping that cotton and the sun had been bearing down hard. After about three or four hours of this, I thought, “This isn’t for me!” I had been thinking about airplanes for a long, long time and how nice it would be to work for Delta, so I laid down that hoe and started going out to their hangar at Selman Field every morning, trying to talk Mr. Woolman and Doug Culver, their shop man, into giving me a job.

“I went out there every day for three weeks. Finally one morning Mr. Woolman came out of the office and saw me again. ‘Doug,’ he said to Culver, ‘what are we going to do with this boy? I can’t get rid of him.’ ‘Mr. Woolman,’ said Doug, ‘I guess we’ll just have to put him to work.’ And they did!

General Headquarters

“Back in those days, the general headquarters was at Selman Field and the field itself was a graveled, east-west strip. We had 13 Huff-Dalands, an OX-5 Travel-Air, an OX Commandaire, and a Curtiss Pusher. This was the fleet. We used the Puffers for dusting and the other planes were used a little for student training and a little bit of passenger hauling. The permanent company employees at that time were Mr. Woolman, Miss Catherine Fitzgerald, Doug Culver, chief pilot Pat Higgins, and pilot Henry Elliott. We had one other mechanic, a fellow named Calhoun. These were the permanent employees, but of course we had quite a lot of other pilots and ground crew people that migrated to and from the dusting units that were scattered all over the country.

“I stayed in Monroe, but we worked everywhere. My first big job was a top overhaul on an OX-5 engine and this I liked, but I also wanted to fly. I finally persuaded them to teach me, so Henry Elliott started giving me instruction in the Curtiss Pusher. Soloed me after two hours and IO minutes dual! One day he just stepped out of the airplane and said, ‘Now you take it around.’ It like to have scared me to death but I took it around, made a pretty good landing and Mr. Henry said, ‘That’s enough for today.”’

Delta Air Service’s story has been told and retold, yet many of the things that it did and many of the advancements that it made in the fledgling art of agricultural flying have still not been said. Unquestionably, it mothered the vast, complex, and sprawling agricultural flying business that exists today.

Although a number of other individuals and firms were experimenting with the art at the same time, the unique structure devised by Delta permitted it to far outstrip what meager competition existed. However, the industry was developing in a fitful manner in a number of intensively farmed areas of the country, especially in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley, the Florida fruit and vegetable regions, the fertile valleys of California, and even in the fruit and vegetable growing areas along the Atlantic Seaboard.

This treatise will attempt to cover such development by region as thoroughly and accurately as possible. It should be pointed out, however, that the pattern for the development and operation of all agricultural flying firms was set by Delta (and Huff-Daland Dusters). ➤

agairupdate.com | 81

To understand the history of the development of the industry, it is necessary to learn as much as possible about its parentage.

Delta initiated some basics that completely dominated the industry, most of them withstanding the test of time and still in use today. Such basics included the operation of an efficient maintenance and overhaul facility; meticulous recruiting and training of pilots; establishment of a professional entomological service as an integral part of the business; development of the satellite unit concept, where planes, pilots, and crews return seasonally to specific farming communities; development of the “migratory” operation, where units follow the growing season geographically (usually from south to north); and strong emphasis on the homebase concept, where valued employees are provided with year-round work, rather than on a seasonal basis.

Doug Culver and his shop crew, after obtaining the entire Huff-Daland Dusters inventory, operated an overhaul and maintenance shop that became the envy of the early aircraft industry. All of the firm’s maintenance, overhaul, and manufacture and installation of dispensing equipment went on in its shops, which were capable of rebuilding aircraft completely in every detail. The work force included wood and metal workers, fabric workers, machinists, welders, engine mechanics, and people to do everything necessary in the maintenance and reconstruction of aircraft.
