FROM THE COCKPIT
Bill Lavender bill@agairupdate.com
Reasonable Thinking I am not sure when the ag-aviation industry will accept UAVs; for some operators, never. Of course, that would be a narrow view of relatively new technology. Change is inevitable and should be embraced to a degree. All change is not good. And, some change has its time and place, as with drones in ag-aviation.
Change is inevitable and should be embraced to a degree.
I’ve stated all along that one day drones in ag-aviation will be commonplace, but not to the degree where they actually compete with the ag-plane. It should be obvious to those that know drone technology has no hope of replacing ag-planes. Some may scoff at that statement. However, the more in touch a person is with our industry, actually sitting in the cockpit, becomes the realization of the challenges facing the drone industry to pursue ag-aviation as a replacement tool. Having said that, I’m not advocating that there is no place for drones in ag-aviation, as there is. Nor do I advocate drones cannot replace the ag plane. I am saying that to do that would be cost-prohibitive and without a profit potential. In other words, there are still plenty of ag-pilots willing to fly and plenty of manned aircraft to do the job. That doesn't take into account all of the regulatory hurdles.
A 6 | agairupdate.com
So, while we wade through the dreams of drone operators that think they can run full-scale ag-operations, let’s take a look at what they should be focused on. In many scenarios, a drone could be helpful in scouting weather conditions at field locations. I feel certain they can be used for the photographic analysis of crops. And, I’m sure there are other legitimate uses; but wholesale ag spraying by air is not one of them. Rest easy when you read somewhere about how a drone has taken over the ag plane's duties. Instead, think about how your company can benefit from this astounding technology. Astounding technology it is, it just has to find its way. This means you can be a part of it and as the tide turns in favor of reasonable UAV utilization within ag-aviation, maybe everyone can move forward with its development in the right direction. Until next month, Keep Turning…

by Ted Delanghe In 2008 Chad Vanderbyl started Fly’n Dutchman Ag Ltd. out of Melfort, Saskatchewan, providing aerial application services for agricultural and forestry needs. The company name is both a tribute to his Dutch ancestry and a reference to the fabled Flying Dutchman ship of naval lore. For Chad, it was the culmination of a childhood dream. “I remember as a kid looking up at the sky and seeing the planes flying overhead. I always wanted to be a pilot, but I had poor eyesight, so I always thought that there was no way I could ever be a pilot without having 20/20 vision.” It’s been said that important traits for a successful business include hard work, patience, and persistence. While Chad didn’t give up on becoming a pilot, he realized he needed to find an alternate career. “I was on the farm and liked working the land and the many facets of agriculture, so I looked around for opportunities to combine farming with aviation. I enrolled in a geophysics program at the University of Saskatchewan. I thought airborne geophysics was where I could combine flying with the study of the land.”
As in many walks of life, timing can also be an essential element. “While pursuing my studies, I found that laser eye surgery could restore my vision to 20/20 en route to getting a Class I medical. At the same time, I started working on getting a Private Pilot License.” In the summer, Chad worked as a mixer/loader for various ag aviation operators who would come to fly off the Melfort airport. It was another important step toward him starting his own ag spraying business. During those summers, his interest shifted from continuing his studies to focus on the ag aviation business. “I kept working on my Commercial Pilot License and started in ag aviation as a Flying Farmer. We bought an Ag Truck, and I went down to Ag Flight in Bainbridge, Georgia, and did the ag training there. After a couple of years, I got an Air Operating Certificate along with an Air Tractor 401.” While developing a solid client list, Chad also brought aboard his cousin as part of the flying team. As well, the fleet was upgraded to two Thrush 510 H80s. ➤

INTERNATIONAL “When I first started, the focus was on insecticide applications, and in the second year, we added a little bit of fungicide work. Gradually year after year, we made more and more fungicide applications. Then about six or seven years ago, we started desiccating by air. That slowly ramped up to where it’s now a whole new season for us and a good way to end the regular season.” Chad has served on the Canadian Aerial Application Association (CAAA) Board of Directors on various committees over the years and, in 2020, took on the reins as President. “You quickly learn there’s a lot more going on behind the scenes than appears at first glance. Keeping in touch with the various committees and CAAA members across the country is a major priority for me. In working with Transport Canada, the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA), and other regulatory bodies, it is critical to keep up to date on what’s going on and what’s coming down the pipe.” As with any industry, both long-standing and shortterm issues must be addressed to keep the ag aviation business thriving. A lot of attention is spent working with government and corporations to find the best solutions that today’s technology can bring to the fore.
Thrush near Melfort, 2021 A 12 | agairupdate.com
“We are currently working with the PMRA on compliance with the water volumes designated on labels. Part of that process is working with registrants to encourage them to evaluate their labels as they were developed years ago under what appears to be some archaic tools. Agricultural aviation is continuing to grow. We are becoming less 911 and used more as another tool in the producer’s toolbox, given the aircraft’s speed as timing is now everything in agriculture. Crop prices are increasing, but so are the fuel, fertilizer, and other input costs. We have to bring cost savings to the farmers to help them be more cost-effective in their operations.” In any business associated with aviation, it is critical that the channels of communication with Transport Canada remain open and active. On behalf of its members, the CAAA continues to work with Transport in seeking solutions to a continuing evolution in the regulatory landscape. One example has to do with lightweight data recorders (LDRs). On December 20, 2021, Transport Canada issued a Notice of Proposed Amendment (NPA) to amend subpart 605 of the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) to require (1) retrofitting of existing aircraft for the installation of LDRs and (2) the mandatory incorporation of LDRs into new aircraft. ➤

“The issue is not as straightforward as first appears. What we are talking about here is not simply adding a single piece of hardware to the aircraft. It involves a lengthy design, certification, production, and installation process. If Transport mandates the LDRs, all these costs will get passed to the operator, which will be significant. We are asking if LDRs are needed in our ag-air industry for accident investigations. Our aircraft are still stick and rudder; they are not overly complex flying machines. It’s very rare not to be able to determine what factors were involved in most circumstances.” The aerial application industry also continues to emphasize continual improvements in overall safety and application efficacy. From annual spray pattern A 14 | agairupdate.com
testing clinics to new emerging technologies, there is a continuing evolution in studying the dynamics of aerial application to achieve the very best results possible. “Every year, we continue to seek ways to ensure our applications are conducted safely and effectively. An important part of that process is constantly monitoring and evaluating our application systems. We run both CP nozzles and atomizers, atomizers for fungicides and insecticides, and CPs when we get into herbicide applications. We used to run atomizers year-round with my Thrush that had winglets, and we never had an issue. As soon as we started flying the H80, which didn’t have winglets, we were getting spray on the windscreen. We moved nozzles around and narrowed our swath width to keep our spray out of the wingtip vortices.” ➤

Precise aerial applications are crucial to successful pest management. Pulse width modulation (PWM) is an emerging technology that provides precise, site-specific applications under changing weather, field, and pest conditions while minimizing potential off-target movement.
Precise aerial applications are crucial to successful pest management.
“It’s what most new ground sprayers are running now, and I think we should explore PWM systems for our aircraft, especially for as much herbicide as we’re doing now. Also, a 50% boom shutoff works well for drift mitigation. It’s an emerging technology that looks pretty good and can help stay on target with products.” It’s hard to look anywhere these days without coming up with a news article or advertisement on drones. discussion involves looking at ways that they can be used as an additional tool in the monitoring of crops and treatment of pests. “To use drones for any broad acre amount of spraying is something I don’t see happening real soon. Just considering new regulations that must be in place means it will take a while to get caught up in that department. Then add to that the studies required to include drones on labels. I can see value in drones where they could be used for crop monitoring and evaluation, or even doing some spot spraying, but again there are a lot of bridges to cross before that becomes mainstream.” For many operators, family members form an integral part of the team. ➤

She does all the books and billings, brings three meals a day for everybody working here, and helps us get organized in the mornings or the evenings as to which aircraft is going where and when. We’ve got three young kids who like coming to the strip when she brings meals, which is the only way I get to see them in the summer because I’m gone at four and not back ‘til ten.” An often-overlooked part of the aerial application business is finding partners to work within continuing studies of various aspects of the business.

INTERNATIONAL “One new development we are looking forward to is working with the University of Saskatchewan. Recently we presented the ag air industry to a class of ag engineers, and then we had a tour of the U of S. Then we had an opportunity to meet some engineering professors. It was exciting in that we could see working with them on a range of projects, maybe starting with drift mitigation studies or water volume studies. Hopefully, it leads to something down the road.” As in every business, consumers must be educated on products and services and the value they can bring. “There are still a number of myths about aerial application, but I am in the unique position of being a commercial ag air operator and a farmer. If, as a farmer, I have invested in
all this training and equipment and aerial spray my fields, it proves that aerial application works and works very effectively since I’ve continued to grow our business.” In looking ahead to the 2022 spray season, Chad is very optimistic about the continuing growth of Fly’n Dutchman Ag and the entire ag aviation industry. “I try to do the best job I can for our farmers and run my business and my airplanes with the idea that if this were my field, would I be happy with the job that’s getting done right now? I know that our members feel the same way, and I’m looking forward to working with them as CAAA President in our continuing efforts to improve what we do and how we do it.”

Productive Aeroagricola operational base. The company has been providing aerial application services in the world’s main sugar and ethanol hub for ten years.
Protecting Crops Via Aerial Application And Firefighting Produtiva Aeroagrícola is an aerial application company located in São Joaquim da Barra, in the northern part of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, the largest ethanol and sugar producer in the world. Incorporated 10 years ago by Marino de Andrade Neto, an agricultural pilot since 1991, the company has a fleet of six aircraft: three Ipanemas 202A, one Cessna Agtruck, one AirTractor 402A, and one Thrush 510G.

Marino started to work in firefighting with his turbo planes, mainly in the sugarcane plantation, operating conventional gate boxes. He told us a little about the evolution of his work:
One of the services provided last year in the region of Morro Agudo (30 km from its base), where the company was hired for two days by the local farmers’ union. In addition to rural producers, the operation had the support of agribusiness companies in the region, the fire department, and the municipal and state civil defense. As there were areas that were difficult to access, the aircraft’s work was critical to the operation’s success.

Marino points out that the versatility of the equipment is a crucial feature for operators in the state of São Paulo, who often intersperse pesticide application work with firefighting. Bottom left: Productiva’s Thrush 510G during an aerial firefighting operation. The company has provided services to associations of local producers and municipalities. Bottom right: Marino leading a hopper discharge with a fire gate. The company helped the Brazilian manufacturer to develop the new equipment.
“Sergio and Lucas Zanoni stayed here for two days, making the necessary adjustments to install the gate on our aircraft. It was a new development and it is serving us well. In addition to greatly improving the discharge over a common gate box, the equipment stays on the aircraft for spraying work. This is a fundamental element for aerial application companies, as we work almost all year round also with agricultural operations”.
to protect with spray applications and fire suppression. The result has been not only the reduction of financial losses but gains for society as a whole. In addition to reducing the emission of polluting gases in the production of these commodities, agricultural aircraft also started to help fight fires in forest reserves (private and public), becoming a fundamental tool for natural defense and sustainable agriculture.
Like other operators in the region, Produtiva was encouraged to work with firefighting in the sugarcane sector. Farmers and mills are starting to invest in hiring this type of service to protect their assets - it’s a win-win with the aircraft able
“Let there be no fires, but if there are, we will do our best to contribute to the fight and thereby minimize losses.” The company’s motto is a great representation of what the agricultural aviation sector has been doing in Brazil.

America’s Aerial Applicators are on Call and Ready for Duty to Fulfill Global Demand for Food ALEXANDRIA, VA – May 23, 2022 – America’s aerial applicators — or crop dusters as they are known in older jargon — are primed and ready to support farmers in need of fast, timely and effective applications this growing season. If they don’t have an existing relationship with an aerial applicator, farmers in need of an aerial application service provider should search NAAA’s “Find an Aerial Applicator” database at AgAviation.org/findapplicator to look for one in their area. After a productive 2021 spraying season, the National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) expects demand for aerial application services to be even greater this summer as farmers strive to protect their crops from yield-robbing weeds, disease and insect pests in an effort to bolster the global food supply. NAAA conducted an industry survey toward the end of the 2021 spraying season. It found that 4 out of 5 aerial applicators flew the same or more hours and treated the same or more acres than they did in 2020, including 57% that treated more acres and 54% that flew more hours than the year before. Several signs point to aerial applicators being even busier this summer. Leading pesticide manufacturers recently informed NAAA that they believe fungicide applications could be 20% higher than in 2021 when 55 million acres of plant health products were sprayed. Furthermore, even with tight supplies and higher input costs, farmers will be counting on aerial applicators to help them maximize their crop output while commodity prices remain high.
to be treated rapidly, far faster than any other form of application. When wet soil conditions, rolling hills or dense vegetation prevent terrestrial equipment from treating an area, aerial application is often the only or most economical method for timely pesticide applications. Additionally, aerial application is conducive to higher crop yields since it does not disrupt the crop or cause soil compaction, improving soil health and the amount grown per acre. Data from a Texas A&M University economics study calculated that the aerial application industry’s value to farmers, input suppliers, processors and agricultural transportation and storage industries for corn, wheat, cotton, soybeans and rice production alone in the U.S. is about $37 billion annually. That figure is expected to grow substantially and in importance as food prices increase and food production becomes an issue of growing importance due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, supply and demand issues, and a growing global population. “With everything going on in the world, including food supply issues, aerial application is going to be vital this year,” NAAA CEO Andrew Moore said. “Because aerial applicators will be in such high demand, NAAA strongly advises farmers to schedule work with them in advance whenever possible.”
Agricultural aviators treat 127 million acres of cropland in the United States each year. That doesn’t include the 7.9 million acres of pasture and rangeland treated by agricultural aircraft annually. Aerial pest control for managers of forests, waterways and public health also adds to these many millions of acres — 5.1 million acres of forestland and 5.2 million acres of mosquito and public health applications are treated annually.
America’s aerial applicators are ready to assist farmers with timely applications. NAAA’s “Find an Aerial Applicator” database helps farmers find them. The search tool is especially handy for farmers that don’t already have an existing service relationship with an aerial application operation. At AgAviation.org/findapplicator, users can conduct a radius search by city/state or zip code for distances ranging from zero to 25 miles away up to 250 miles away. All aerial application companies in the database are members of the National Agricultural Aviation Association and must abide by NAAA’s Member Code of Conduct to operate in a manner that reflects the professionalism and ethical nature of the aerial application industry.
When disease, weeds or insects threaten a crop or it needs nutrients or seeding, aerial application is the fastest and most economical way to aid farmers. It permits large areas
Farmers, ranchers, foresters, agricultural co-ops and crop advisors are encouraged to visit AgAviation.org/findapplicator to find an aerial applicator near them.

The Deep Connection Between Agriculture & Immigrants The Real Story Immigrant farmworkers make up an estimated 73% of agricultural workers, without their important efforts we simply would not have any fresh fruits or vegetables grown in the United States.
B 8 | agairupdate.com
U.S. Agriculture is often held in a negative light regarding its labor force. You can find many claims about how farmers are simply using immigrant labor to underpay & downright abuse their workers so the farmer can rake in the profits. But, this has little evidence to back it up. U.S. agriculture depends on immigrant labor. Without this workforce, crops would be left in the field to rot, and farmers would make zero profit; therefore, they care a lot for this precious resource. Immigrant farmworkers make up an estimated 73% of agricultural workers. Without their important efforts, we would not have any fresh fruits or vegetables grown in the United States. These are immigrants, meaning they weren’t born in the U.S., but they don’t fit the bill of what many people picture as “illegal immigrants.” More than 80% of hired crop farmworkers live within seventy-five miles of the farm they work on and have lived in the U.S. for over 10 years. Yes, 50% of the farm labor workforce is undocumented, yet they still pay taxes and contribute to our local economy as they live here and spend
their money here. They are husbands & wives (59% are married), parents (52%), and our neighbors, members of our local community, and frankly, we depend on them as part of the process to provide us with a safe and steady food supply. Foreign-born workers have been hard to come by in the last few years. There are ten states responsible for the majority of U.S. Agriculture production, with California boasting the largest share of production. Labor shortages were being experienced onfarm long before the covid-19 pandemic. A recent survey shows that 56% of California farmers reported being unable to find the necessary number of workers over the last five years. Fewer immigrants are looking for work in the United States as immigration policies impact and incomes rise in Mexico, lowering the need to seek foreign-based jobs. Without the workers’ foods sit in the fields unharvested, contributing to food waste and millions of dollars in lost production. One common rumor is that workers aren’t paid appropriately for the vital work, but workers are paid well and what we are able to. ➤

Through programs like H2A, agricultural workers are paid on average between $15-$22 an hour after bonuses (depending on crop, region and volume) over double the current federal minimum wage. In other countries like Mexico, they could only make $10-$15 a day, so it can be difficult for U.S. farmers to compete against imported produce in the grocery aisle. And, sometimes, the cost of production and employment is higher than the cost they’d actually get paid for the crop, which means, at times, the harvest must be left behind in the field. It can be a sad and complicated economic situation. Unfortunately, 43% of farmworkers have utilized public assistance, which is greater than the 19% of U.S. citizens on assistance programs. Yet, one would expect this, and it may not be a direct reflection of their wages. Many of these families left struggling countries for a better life. They, therefore, didn’t have the greatest start in their life in the United States, so, understandably, a portion of them will require some assistance as they work to build financial stability. Labor is already a huge cost for farmers, accounting for 48% of production B 10 | agairupdate.com
costs for fresh fruits and 35% of the expenses for fresh vegetable farms. Hand-picked products are more expensive, and any increase in wages would drive up food prices which may be difficult for consumers. A total loss of foreign farmworkers would result in significantly higher food prices, with some commodities doubling in price. Total agricultural output for the country would fall by $30 to $60 billion as farms closed up shop due to no labor. Foreign-born workers are a vital asset to U.S. food security and domestic production. These people are a critical resource for farmers and the general public if we intend to maintain the flourishing agriculture industry. No, these people aren’t abused and used. They are taken care of to the best of a farmer’s ability, with wages and sometimes with housing, transportation, food, childcare, and other general needs. We appreciate their willingness to work, and they appreciate the opportunities for a better life. Immigrant workers & farmers have a mutually beneficial relationship, and any general statement contradicting this fact is just a myth.

CRAYMER’S COUNSEL
Robert Craymer - robertc@covingtonaircraft.com
AD 2022-08-13 When Transport Canada issued AD CF-2019-30R1 in December of 2019, discussion began if/when the F.A.A. would issue a corresponding A.D. That day has officially arrived. The Federal Aviation Administration has now issued A.D. 2022-08-13. This AD applies to PT6A-34, -34B, -34AG, -114 and -114A engines. Meaning, that for the ag aviation industry, if you are running a PT6A34 or -34AG, this A.D. could affect your engine. If you are operating any of these engine models, here is the information that you need to know. A.D. 2022-08-13 deals specifically with a repair that has been performed on compressor turbine vane rings (CTVR) by Southwest Turbines Inc. The repair of the CTVR is identified as repair process number S.T.I. 7250-254. Vane ring part numbers affected are 3029051, 3032151 and 3123001. If you have one of these vane rings repaired by this specific repair, you have 250 hours or 270 days from May 27. That’s February 21, 2023, or 250 flight hours, whichever comes first, to comply with A.D. 2022-08-13. The first step to identifying your potential exposure is to review your engine logbooks. Find the entries where you had hot section inspections or other gas generator work performed. If your vane ring was replaced, it should be identified in those entries. If your entry identifies a vane ring change or repair, investigate the rest of your records. Your mechanic will often supply you an 8130-3 for major components, like the CTVR. This 8130-3 will include the company’s name that worked on the vane and what repairs were performed. This is where the specific repair (S.T.I. 72-50-254) should be identified. Other times your mechanic will have a record of the work performed, such as a work order number. They may have records there to help you. You may need to follow up with the mechanic/shop that performed the work where the vane ring was repaired/replaced. The information you B 12 | agairupdate.com
need should be out there and available. If you exhaust every other means of determining what is in your engine, the alternative is to split the engine and identify what CTVR is in your engine. With the part number and serial number, you may have to contact Southwest Turbines Inc. and have them identify if your vane ring was repaired with repair S.T.I. 72-50-254. The next subject of the A.D. identifies specific compressor turbine blades that will require replacement. The A.D. calls out CMSX-6 compressor turbine blades. CMSX-6 are the Pratt & Whitney Canada single crystal blades introduced starting with service bulletin 1690, with the latest version of these blades being released by service bulletin 1767. If you find that you have operated an affected CTVR and you have one of these sets of blades, the blades will require replacement along with the vane ring. Now you have identified that the engine’s vane ring and compressor turbine blades need to be replaced per the A.D., what do you do? We reference back the engine maintenance manual. When replacing a compressor turbine vane ring, there are directions one must follow. The maintenance manual states: “If stator assembly must be replaced, an assembly of same class or ± 0.03 in² or ± 0.12 class (REF. S.I.L. No. GEN PT6A 020).” This is where things might get sticky. When it comes time to locate the replacement vane ring, getting a like flow class is paramount. The vane ring flow class has the potential to alter your engine performance. A smaller vane ring class accelerates the air more, increasing the compressor speed (Ng). A higher Ng speed provides more air to the engine, more cooling, and a lower I.T.T. That sounds great, doesn’t it? What if your engine is already pushing up against the redline on Ng? ➤

If you swap out the vane for one of a lower class, suddenly you can’t make power because you are limited by gas generator (compressor) speed. On the other side, you move the vane ring class to the higher side, Ng slows, and I.T.T. increases. Now potentially, you can’t make power because the redline on I.T.T limits you. This is why the vane must be replaced with a like flow class. The CTVR will have a class identified on it. The logbooks should also contain the class installed at the last test cell run. Some time should be spent determining what flow class you need. The absolute best way to do this B 14 | agairupdate.com
is how we do it at Covington. We have a flow bench where we can measure the flow area of your vane and then measure the flow area of potential replacement vanes. This gives you an apple to apple comparison and provides the most accurate data. We are not the only people who can offer such a service; however, I think everyone needs to know that this kind of information about your vane ring is available. Remember, as we all go through this process, everyone will be limited to what flow class vanes are available in the market. Flow class availability is the potential area that could become difficult for the owner/operator.

When we look at replacing blades, bear in mind that it may also require a replacement set of segments. We grind the blades to get the disk round and are limited by the manual as to the maximum and minimum size the disk can be. Then we grind the segments to provide the proper clearance for operation. This also can influence performance as excessive clearance can cause changes to Ng and I.T.T. as the engine loses efficiency. According to F.A.A. data released around this A.D., they estimate that around 900 engines will require a CTVR change, and about 60 engines will require both vane ring and compressor turbine blade replacement. (14 C.F.R. Part 39 [Docket No. F.A.A.–2020–0692; Project Identifier MCAI–2019–00140–E; Amendment 39– 22016; A.D. 2022–08–13]). They do not break down these numbers by engine model. We don’t have data on how many of the affected vane rings are in PT6A-34 or -34AGs. Potentially, up to 1000 people could be out looking for vane rings of the same flow class range. not trying to cause panic but want the information out, so people will understand all the variables that every shop will have to deal with. We are all in this together and will work through it. Remember the keys: Is my engine affected? What flow class is my CTVR? What part number compressor turbine blades are in my engine? The sooner we can identify the replacements that are required the better it will be to get them taken care of in the timeliest manner. Remember, though, that the swollen, boggy, nasal and sinus tissues associated with allergies are a prime setup for ear and sinus blocks, which can be incapacitating. And just because you can safely ascend does not mean you can safely descend. The swelling seen in both allergies and “colds” can turn some air passageways into one-way valves — expanding air can escape, but one cannot “repressurize” on descent. If the symptoms are bad enough to interfere with your ability to act as pilot in command, then you should ground yourself until the symptoms have subsided. It’s similar, but not identical, to dealing with fatigue. If you feel fatigued, you should ground yourself until you can get sufficient rest. Once rested, no medical clearance is required to return to flight status. So what’s different with allergies? Some of the most common over-thecounter (OTC) medications used to treat them can be more problematic than the allergies themselves. The chief offender is diphenhydramine (common trade name: Benadryl®). It is one of the most prevalent and commonly used medications, both alone and in combination products, and its prevalence can create a problem. Since diphenhydramine is an OTC medication and widely available, it doesn’t occur to most pilots that it might be disqualifying. But it is.
Frequently Asked Questions Q: What is the concern with diphenhydramine? Diphenhydramine is a sedating antihistamine. In fact, it is such an effective sedative that it is used in most OTC combination pain relief medications (i.e., Tylenol PM®) intended for bedtime use, and it is the sole active ingredient (i.e., Zzzquil®) in most OTC sleep aids. Even if diphenhydramine doesn’t put you to sleep, it can dramatically impair your cognitive abilities, which are critical to your safety. Q: Is diphenhydramine (Benadryl) the only concerning sedating allergy medication? No, there are others, such as chlorpheniramine (Coricidin®) and doxylamine (found in Vicks NyQuil®). If the box warning says “May cause drowsiness” or if it advises the user to “be careful when driving a motor vehicle or operating machinery,” then the medication is NOT safe for flying. Q: Are there allergy medications that I can take and still fly? Yes, there are a number of non-sedating antihistamines available. These include loratadine (Claritin®), desloratadine (Clarinex®), and fexofenadine
B 20 | agairupdate.com
(Allegra®). If one of these medications controls your symptoms without making you sleepy, you may use them and continue flying with no wait time if you have no adverse effects during an initial 48-hour ground trial for any new medication. Q: What if I have to take diphenhydramine? For some aviators, diphenhydramine may be the most or only effective solution. In that case, you should be aware that laboratory testing has demonstrated an extremely long period of impairment associated with diphenhydramine. This is why you should wait five times the maximum pharmacologic half-life (or 60 hours) before returning to flight. Resources One of your best resources is the Allergy – Antihistamine & Immunotherapy Medication page in the AME Guide: bit.ly/30LJsF1 (PDF). It describes in detail what medications are allowed, require a wait time, or are unacceptable. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact an AME or your Regional Flight Surgeon’s (RFS) office. Fuel Surcharges How do you go about creating a separate fuel surcharge?
B 22 | agairupdate.com
Throughout the last 30 years of supporting our Chem-Man software, I’ve seen the price of gas rise and fall. Of course, when it comes to the billing side of things, we get many calls on whether to charge a fuel surcharge and how to do it. My immediate instinct makes me want to reply, “You have to cover your costs and make a profit to stay in business, so don’t feel bad.”. Remember, your farmers NEED you to stay in business, and know that you can’t run
a business without covering your costs. They also know that the fuel price is very high, and they should expect a reflection on their bill. Sometimes customers will ask us, what is the advantage of raising prices versus adding another line item for fuel surcharge? I have two responses to this. If you raise the price, most likely, you’re going to pay a higher commission on the cost of the application if you pay commissions.
UNITED STATES
On the Facebook page “My Job Depends on Ag,” I asked growers if they’d prefer a fuel surcharge vs. a price hike. One grower said: “Surcharges can disappear with lower-cost fuel whereas increased service rates are rarely reduced going forward. Maybe wishful thinking but hope springs eternal.” (Other growers also reflect this). Of course, no one likes to pay more for anything, and I’ve heard that applicators are willing to go in the hole for their farmers. I can’t imagine doing this, but you can’t always judge what others do. I’ve been guilty of doing this when I see that one of my companies is having a challenging year, but it has to be limited for you to run your company.
charge by the tach hour, acre, percentage of application, pound, etc.
How much to charge? Answer: This will have to be a decision that you make on your own. You will have to calculate your additional costs and determine what method best covers these costs for your company. (Outside help such as your CPA is always an option). FYI: Some users modify the price up and down depending on the cost of fuel.
The question often is asked, how do you go about creating a separate fuel surcharge?
I hope this article helps with some of the worries that are happening with the high fuel costs. Bottom line: Your grower knows that you must make a living. Even if he gripes, make him understand that you’re just passing this cost on, and it’s “hopefully” a temporary cost that will eventually go away.
Answer: You can charge multiple ways. We see users

Aeroglobo — Brazilian Dealer for Lane Aviation Celebrates 15 Years of Success by Bill Lavender AeroGlobo Revendedora de Produtos Aeronáuticos held an Open House April 11 at its main headquarters in Botucatu, SP. Owner, Luiz Fabiano Zaccarelli Cunha , welcomed dignitaries and guests from Brazil, Argentina and the USA. The AeroGlobo team was on hand to help with the Open House as well as offer explanations to the various services provided by AeroGlobo. These services include sales, service and training for Air Tractor aircraft through a partnership with Lane Aviation, Pratt & Whitney Canada turbine engines through a partnership with FlightSafety International and Turbine Conversions fire gate and single point fuel systems. AeroGlobo is also a dealer for several support suppliers including Satloc GPS, CP Nozzles, Transland and Zanoni Equipamentos, to name a few. B 24 | agairupdate.com
AeroGlobo was founded April 14, 2007 by Fabiano, who had previously worked for Neiva. He started at Neiva as a mechanical engineer for the Ipanema, Cessna/Piper/ Minuano and Cenia light line in 1981. He performed this duty until 1994 when he was promoted to Commercial Manager tasked with selling the Ipanema aircraft and Cessna products. In 2002, Fabiano was responsible for the sale of 42 Ipanemas, followed with a sales record of 82 Ipanemas in 2003. When Fabiano left Neiva and started AeroGlobo, he had only one person helping him. He formed a partnership with USA Air Tractor dealer, Lane Aviation. Inc., to sell new and used Air Tractors. That first year, business was made up of 80% Air Tractor sales and 20% parts sales. ➤

In the early years, Fabiano worked out of his mother-in-law’s garage. In 2012, he opened his current location in Botucatu. In 2022, AeroGlobo doubled the size of its location to what it is today with plans to expand training to the complete maintenance of Air Tractor aircraft including the turbine engine. This expansion was to facilitate AeroGlobo’s expanding training facilities with FlightSafety for mechanics and the safe operation of the PT6A-AG and PW100/200 series engines. The arrangement with FlightSafety came about through a coordinated effort with PWC and FlightSafety. This arrangement offered a more centralized training facility with instructors who spoke Portuguese. Specifically, Jarbas M. engines (PT6A-11AG through PT6A-67AG), as well as to include the PW100 and PW200 series engines. Assisting Jarbas is Eric Moreira, who is about to be certified by FlightSafety, as well. Currently, AeroGlobo has nine employees for sales, service and training. Additionally, there are three FlightSafety International contributors, two instructors, plus three agpilots employed by AeroGlobo for transition, refresh and fire-fighting training. There are three divisions that make up AeroGlobo. These divisions are managed by longtime employees; Fernando Martin of After Sales Service; Renato Pires da Silva of Administration and Finance and Rodrigo Alves de Oliveira as Commercial Manager.

A WING AND A PRAYER
Carlin Lawrence carlin@agairupdate.com
Living A Lifestyle of Pleasing God The apostle Paul wrote, “Walk (Live our life) in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love” (Ephesians 4:2). The words “humble and humility” are mentioned over 80 times in the Bible. “By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life” (Proverbs 22:4). “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up” (James 4:10). Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time” (1 Peter 5:6).
“Walk (Live our life) in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love” (Ephesians 4:2).
“Moses was very humble, more than all men who were on the face of the earth” (Numbers 12:3). Moses didn’t want to go up against the Egyptian Pharaoh unless the Lord went with him; Moses knew that he had no power or strength within himself. Moses’ leadership was challenged by Korah and his friends, so Moses sought the Lord’s help in taking care of this rebellious situation and the Lord opened the earth and it swallowed up Korah and all his followers (Exodus 16). God used Moses to perform some of the most amazing miracles of human history. “God gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak” (Isaiah 40:29). A gentle person doesn’t become upset or angry over every little thing they disagree with; they realize that the other person might be right. And most of the time it doesn’t make any difference who is right or wrong. Silly arguments can cause lots of harm among friends. “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger…It’s to a man’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick
B 32 | agairupdate.com
to quarrel” (Proverbs 15:1, 20:3). “Slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle towards everyone” (Titus 3:2). We’re to be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry (James 1:19). God doesn’t like habitual complaining (Numbers 11:1). Knowing when to speak up or keep our mouth shut, and knowing when a situation is important enough to become angry over, or just let it slide, is a mark of a meek and spiritually strong person. James wrote, “When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise” (Proverbs 10:19). The psalmist said, “I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin” (Psalm 39:1). Everyone needs to heed the warnings, “Be angry and sin not… Do everything without complaining” (Ephesians 2:26, Philippians 2:4). “A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly” (Proverbs 14:29). Knowing how to wait without getting upset or upsetting those around us is a good characteristic to have. Lack of patience can cause a person to do some very stupid things. Delays and interruptions will come into our lives; it’s a natural part of this sinful world we live in. There’s something to delay or interrupt us every day of our life. It isn’t the delays and interruptions that are the problem—it’s how we handle them. Interruptions and delays can turn out to be an opportunity of a lifetime. “Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:1).

Automated Mixing By Simon of Cyrene was on his way to celebrate Passover, but suddenly he was pulled out of the crowd by a Roman soldier and required to carry the Cross for a man named Jesus, whom he probably didn’t even know (Matthew 27:32). Yet this interruption gave him a place in one of the most magnificent dramas of all time. This man’s name was written in the Bible for all eternity because his schedule was interrupted. “God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as you have helped His people and continue to help them” (Hebrews 6:10).

The story of Joseph in the Old Testament is a good example of God’s providence in our life (Genesis 37,39-50). Strong believers in Jesus Christ know that God will take care of every situation in their life in His own time and way. Many times God allows bullies to destroy each other: “The trouble he causes recoils on himself; his violence comes down on his own head…Evil will slay the wicked; the foes of the righteous will be condemned (Psalm 7:16, 34:21). It’s a serious mistake for people to believe that they’re getting away with any kind of evil. God knows all our motives, thoughts, words and actions (Psalm 94:11). “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom” (James 3:13). agairupdate.com | B 33

This firm continued to expand, relying on a mixed fleet of Stearmans and early model Ag-Cats. Some 3,500 acres of cranberries were usually under contract, requiring as many as seven or eight applications each season with fungicides applied at as much as 30 gallons per acre. The heavier Ag-Cats, with higher horsepower and larger tank capacity, were usually used for this work. These same high capacity aircraft led to an interesting and profitable forest fire control program in the New Jersey hardwood forest areas. Forest fires were a common threat to this heavily wooded region. In 1968, Downstown Aero made a proposal to the authorities to equip its aircraft for fast water B 34 | agairupdate.com
dumping and make them available on call during the peak fire season. The company would be paid only on an as-used basis. Cugino and his crew designed special, wide opening dump valves for the Cats that would dump a full load of water in three seconds. Quick fire notification plans were worked out and this venture became eminently successful. It is still in operation today. In 1982, some 278 fires were reported and controlled by these aircraft. Water alone is dumped. As a result of this successful program, the method has spread to forested areas all over the country. ➤

Downstown Aero also pioneered gypsy moth spray programs in the Eastern region. This moth, nature's great hardwood defoliator in its larva stage, began ravishing Eastern forests in the 1930s and, by the mid-1950s, had spread over the entire region. Department of Agriculture officials initiated huge control programs in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, and contracted with many ag aviation organizations.

Downstown Aero still engages in this work. The gypsy moth, however, continues its damage. A flight over much of this Eastern region will quickly show evidence of such on a wide and frightening scale.

Records show that this fight actually began in 1942 and 1943, when small spraying programs were undertaken as the moth began to create more damage. DDT programs were eventually phased out, but gypsy moth spray programs continued using Sevin, a less controversial pesticide.

of the Delaware River and down to Trenton, New Jersey, is a farming paradise which became an agricultural aviation hotbed.
None of these early firms have been more influential than Cugino and Nixholm's Downstown Aero Crop Service. Many of their veteran pilots, men like Mike Brago, Buck Giesert, Matt Baczor, John Smaltz, and Dick Nixholm himself, have become legendary in their own time, in their own bailiwick.
Chris Stoltzfus, a native of this region, was almost totally responsible for the area's agricultural aviation development. A man of marvelous talent, tremendous enthusiasm, and unquestionable integrity, he took up flying in 1936 and soon became widely known in that region as "Airplane Chris."
In researching the growth and development of agricultural aviation, it becomes increasingly clear that every major farming region produces its own outstanding airman. Almost singlehandedly, his efforts create a major industry in a very short time. Nowhere is this more true than in the magnificent Dutch farm country of Pennsylvania.
By 1944, he had acquired a good Travel-Air 4000 with a J-5 engine and used his natural flair for mechanics to design and install a workable dust hopper, complete with agitator, gear box, and fan. He then quickly convinced local farmers they needed his services, particularly on tomatoes affected by blight, which responded to a dust fungicide.
This land, west from Coatesville into fabled Lancaster and York counties, and on into the heavily farmed areas around Gettysburg, Harrisburg, and Elizabethtown, is beautiful and tremendously productive. So too are the rolling lands along the Susquehanna River and the intensively farmed areas in Bucks County to the east. All of the land that lies in the bend
At the time, Campbell Soup Company farmed many acres in the region, growing, among other things, tomatoes, sweet com, lima beans, snap beans, potatoes, broccoli, and spinach. With the aid of his younger brother, John, Chris was working these crops on a regular basis by 1945 and 1946. ➤

“It’s a real hedge-hopping job, the most difficult type of flying,” he stated. “The country is rugged and Mr. Stoltzfus pilots his biplane at 100 miles a hour, barely skimming over the tops of the trees, missing them by about a foot and never more than five feet.” B 38 | agairupdate.com
Stoltzfus was an innovator and experimenter. One experiment gained national publicity in October 1945. It involved dusting some 665 apple trees on the Spring Gap Orchards near Cumberland. A specially prepared dust was applied that hopefully would prevent premature fruit drop. Apparently, this was an early hormone that went simply by the name of "Stop Drop Dust." Gilbert Miller, a stockholder and director of the orchard, described the dusting job in the October 5, 1945, issue of The Cumberland News. "It's a real hedge-hopping job, the most difficult type of flying," he stated. "The country is rugged and Mr. Stoltzfus pilots his biplane at 100 miles a hour, barely skimming over the tops of the trees, missing them by about a foot and never more than five feet."
Stoltzfus applied some 2,000 pounds of dust to the orchard in about three hours. The work was done with the Travel-Air equipped with Stoltzfus' dispensing unit. Representatives from the Federal Experimental Station at College Park, Maryland, were present, along with representatives from agricultural experiment stations from Everett, Pennsylvania, Point West, Virginia, and Rada, West Virginia. This experiment was widely recorded and did much to open up the future for Stoltzfus and his firm. With the end of World War II, and the immediate availability of surplus aircraft, notably the Stearman trainer, Stoltzfus began upgrading his fleet. He soon acquired a number of Stearmans. In the late 1940s, when commercial dispensing equipment became generally available, he equipped the majority of them with the modem Mississippi Valley Aircraft Service units obtained in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

Embraer Delivers 1500th Ipanema Aircraft Amid Year of Record Sales Botucatu – SP, Brazil, May 17, 2022 - A technological icon in Brazilian agriculture with five decades of operation, Embraer has delivered the 1500th Ipanema agricultural aircraft. The aircraft, which received a commemorative painting alluding to this historical moment and references to national agribusiness, was received yesterday by the rancher Carla de Freitas, owner of Agropecuária Bela Vista, based in Vilhena in the state of Rondônia. The rancher, who is also one of the founders of the Women’s Agribusiness Nucleus (NFA) and a member of the content committee of the National Congress of Women in Agribusiness, participated in the delivery ceremony at the Embraer Unit in Botucatu, São Paulo countryside, where the Ipanema EMB 203 aircraft is manufactured. “It is an honor to receive the 1,500th Ipanema from a genuinely national company like Embraer, which develops technologies to improve production techniques in Brazilian agriculture. Embraer is a company that demonstrates its commitment to Brazil’s technological, agricultural and environmental agenda, with an aircraft powered A 32 | agairupdate.com
100% by ethanol,” said Carla de Freitas. “Furthermore, being a woman receiving an aircraft from a female pilot demonstrates the company’s value and care with the gender inclusion theme.” The celebration comes amid another year of record sales for the aircraft, which registered 39 new orders in the first five months of 2022. This volume is 22% higher compared to the same period last year. Held at the end of April, Agrishow Ribeirão Preto alone has sold 11 of the 203 aircraft model, which is the most modern in the series. The Ipanema 203 embodies the most recent technological innovations in the segment and exceeds 130 aircraft in operation all over the country. Embraer’s agricultural aviation division delivered 42 Ipanema aircraft in 2021, an increase of 90% compared to 2020. With the current sales figures in early 2022, the company solidifies its market leadership position, which relies on Ipanema’s efficiency, productivity, and robustness, and remains an essential tool for the country’s agribusiness.

Stress Busters by Ted Delange I stress about stress even before there is stress to stress about. Anyone who has been in the ag aviation business even for a little while knows a fair amount about stress. Perhaps too much. While we discuss metal stress and fatigue without breaking a sweat, the human side of the stress equation is often not in the conversation. Noise. Heat. Vibrations. Winds. Farmers lined up at the airstrip—a sudden invasion of insects devastating a crop. Fuel prices skyrocketing. A birdstrike missed the prop but took off the pump fan propeller. Wake up call at 4 am. Flying 16 hours a day, taking a sprog pilot on board for a first season. The list goes on and on, with all these items and many more contributing factors to rising stress levels. It’s enough to take your breath away, but it’s just part and parcel of the industry and something you have to put up with. Or do you? More and more, we are finding that stress is a pandemic problem by itself, not only in ag aviation but across the general population. Stress is related to the six leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver, and suicide.
As with many things, there is good news and bad news. We have just covered some of the bad news that goes along with stress, and it’s time for some good news. Stress is not altogether bad. In fact, at low levels, it is of benefit in helping us to stay alert and be on the lookout for potential trouble coming our way. Coupled with this is that we can manage stress given a few tips and techniques. And one more piece of good news. It doesn’t take the same amount of time to get rid of stress as it does to accumulate it. So, what is this oft-mentioned malady called stress? It’s easy to know when we feel stressed. Headaches, tight shoulders, trouble sleeping at night, short temper, and getting upset with relatively minor issues. These are the visible and very apparent signs that we are climbing the stress ladder. Then there are the medical symptoms that we are often unaware of. Respiration, heart rate, and blood pressure increase as your body unconsciously and automatically responds to the cause (stressor) from both internal and external sources. Your temperature rises, blood vessels constrict, and your metabolism speeds up, all courtesy of an evolutionary response to danger, real or perceived. I once heard this automatic response system described as an ancient apparatus running outdated software. Great to have when you are living in the jungle and have to worry about predators that can eat you. Not so great when you live in the modern world where stressors are often as much psychological as physical. How many people who don’t usually engage in public speaking feel comfortable giving a speech in front of a large audience and instead are stressed to the max thinking about the upcoming event rather than looking forward to it as an invigorating and satisfying experience? Okay, fine and good, but what in the world does all this have to do with flying? The performance of any task is directly related to our level of stress. If very low, we are apt not to pay attention and consequently perform poorly. As stress rises to an acceptable level, we become more motivated and focused and tend to perform well. If stress levels rise too high, we become preoccupied to the point where our performance is degraded.
INTERNATIONAL
To take that into the field, it means that while our ability to physically fly the aircraft will not be directly affected by stress, our judgment and our ability to problem-solve will be significantly compromised as the level of stress rises. Every individual has specific responses to stress, with attendant signs and symptoms that highlight rising stress levels. The symptoms include exhaustion and fatigue, anxiety, digestive problems, irritability, and negativity. Recognizing these is an excellent first step in managing the associated stressor. Another proven stress-buster includes having your operation well organized and well prepared for the season. During the off-season, a lot can be done to ensure you have all you need – in terms of people, equipment, and standard operating procedures – to get the job done safely and effectively. Ensure all your crew members are fully trained in their primary jobs and how to establish and maintain a safe working environment around aircraft.

Single Point Fueling System STC SA01323CH AG Cats - Air Tractor - Thrush
Effective time management is another key to helping keep stress to manageable levels. If you are overloaded with things to do, and you feel like you’re running as fast as you can just trying to stay ahead of the oncoming tsunami, take a break from the action and review what you are doing and what additional resources you might need to keep the temperature and pressure readings in the green. Stress and its ill-bred cousin fatigue are often cited as causal factors in accident investigations. But stress is tough to quantify because we have no firm standard of stress measurement. Wouldn’t it be great to have a smartwatch that indicated stress levels with green, yellow, and red bands? That way, not only could we selfmonitor, but other crew members could also keep an eye out for trouble. Another common factor in accident investigations is that a single event does not cause many accidents but rather a series of events. It’s a vicious cycle where stress from one problem causes a time crunch, which affects the next problem, and so on. The old saying goes, “When you’re up to your armpits in alligators, it’s sometimes hard to remember that your original intention was to drain the swamp.” Taking the time to prepare for the task at hand fully and taking the time to unwind when the personal pressure gauge is in the caution area pays enormous dividends. It’s not easy to do (damn those alligators), but it is worth it.

Evaluation Cover Crop Application
Setting up seed collection trays, four feet apart for 30 meters.
The season for the implantation of cover crops by air begins this fall for those operations north of the Equator. The use of the aircraft is essential for the success of cover crop planting and contributing to the sustainability of ag-aviation companies. Aerial seeding is a strategic tool that must be strongly promoted due to its efficiency and operational capacity. Now, is all aerial seeding the same? Are the results always stable and predictable? Are the seed sizes and density always the same? For these and other queries, a group of companies that I advise in Argentina decided to take action and set forth to find some answers. The first problem we encountered was the need to standardize the evaluation of the results. After several discussions, we decided the best way was to make applications at different heights, (50-70-100-200 feet) and always with a wind vector 0-180°. This would be the most appropriate method to define, develop and evaluate a coefficient of variation (CV - standard deviation/series average) on a percentage scale. A 36 | agairupdate.com
At the same time, we had to take into account different solid dispersion systems (small gate box, large gate box, or the high acceleration solid systems units like a Swathmaster). We needed to consider the characteristics of the solids; hectoliter weight (weight by volume), seed consistency and cleanliness, etc.) We had a huge technical challenge ahead of us since the number of variables was adding up and not much time to accomplish our mission. So for now, we examined one or two of the variables at stake to define an accurate application. With the first series of tests, we analyzed the distribution of a seed with good hectoliter weight, such as wheat. The seeds were applied on an analysis site 30 meters wide (98.4 feet) with a tailwind vector between 0-180°. The aircraft was an AT-502 fitted with a Swathmaster spreader, applied at 200 feet high. Eight trays were set up at equal distances of four meters apart. Each tray’s equivalent area was 0.3416 m2 (3.68 sq. ft).
INTERNATIONAL

The results obtained were the following: Overall average
8,83
88 kg/ha
Swath average
9,15
91 kg/ha
CV Overall
20,36%

21,14%
The results allowed us to ensure at a certain flight height (200 feet) with an effective swath width not greater than 28 meters, it is highly probable to achieve solid distributions with a low CV (coefficient of variability of the order of 21.14%). This reinforces the efficiency and accuracy of cover crop seeding using aerial applications. by Bill Lavender CHAMPAGNE REGION, FRANCE — AgAir Update’s third segment of its European excursion takes it to the Champagne region of France, where grapes are grown for the production of world famous French champagne. From this region, approximately 30,000 hectares (2.54 acres = one hectare) are farmed to raise grapes, of which only 3,000 hectares are sprayed via the helicopter; Air-Champagne helicopters to be more specific, twelve of them, an assortment of Bell 47s and Hughes 300s. Arriving by train from Augsburg, Germany, my wife, Sandy, and I met our host Christophe Druart in Reims. Christophe is a pilot for Air-Champagne during the season, and also a freelance ag pilot for another operator, Ets. R. Denizot - Travaux Aeriens, in the off-season. He is rated in both fixed and rotor wing aircraft, however, the helicopter is his preference. With 15 years experience as an ag pilot, of which the last two seasons have been with Air-Champagne, Christophe was an excellent host, driving us through the region, explaining the intricacies of helicopter spraying in France. Air-Champagne is owned by Jean Pierre Charlier, who is also a vineyard grower. The company recently acquired Phyt Air, and combined the two fleets of helicopters. The company

Spray equipment for Air-Champagne’s helicopters are manufactured locally.
Air-Champagne has over 3,000 customers. Many of these accounts farm less than a 1/2 hectare vineyard, with a twohectare vineyard considered larger than average. The vineyards are intermingled with each other, making it very difficult for the pilot to distinguish one vineyard from the other. Because of this, the vineyards are marked with plastic bags on five-foot poles, while a private consultant monitors the first passage of the applications from the ground. The vineyards are too small to utilize a GPS unit, or a turbine-powered helicopter. Each pilot is assigned sectors of vineyards. Christophe has one sector that is 360 hectares and can take as long as five days to treat. An application mission is comprised of a spray unit with three people, one helicopter and one service truck. The three individuals within the unit are the pilot, loader and mechanic. The unit works from the roadside adjacent to the vineyard. Typical loads are 150 liters (35 gallons). The helicopters are well-maintained, receiving maintenance on a daily basis. A 40 | agairupdate.com
The applications are typically fungicides, with two or three insecticide applications during a season. Application rates are 40-50 liters per hectare (4-5 gallons/acre). Approximately 8-12 applications are made a year, depending on the weather. Each customer is charged the minimum of eight applications. The season begins in May and ends in August. Although most of the applications are for vineyards, Air-Champagne treats some canola in April and a small amount of forestry work in July. A 150-meter buffer zone is required for helicopter applications. Because most of the residents realize the importance of spraying the grapes, applications are sometimes made inside the buffer zone. Even so, every effort is made to minimize drift, operating the helicopters at 30-40 kilometers per hour (18-24 mph).
INTERNATIONAL
Christophe Druart prefers the Hughes 300 because the seating position is better than the Bell 47. One problem, however, is the #4 engine cylinder tends to overheat during hover and landing. AirChampagne has made a modification that allows more air to pass over the cylinder, helping to keep it cool.
Michel Veau with his Mercedes taxi in Paris, France.
Each year, more vineyard growers select the helicopter for their pesticide applications. Operating ground rigs on the hillsides is very dangerous. More people are killed from overturned tractors/sprayers in any one year, than in a decade of helicopter spraying. Growers are determining that with the helicopter, applications can be made in a more timely fashion, with less exposure to chemicals, while receiving a better application. After an extensive tour of the Champagne region, AirChampagne’s facilities, a large winery and two American memorials to World War I soldiers, Christophe made sure we boarded the train for Paris, safe and sound. In a matter of an hour or so, the train traveled westbound to Paris, where our next host waited patiently for our arrival. In the mass confusion at the Paris train station stood a man with an AgAir Update in his hand. He could only be our host for the weekend, Michel Veau.
Michel is a taxi driver with more than forty years experience driving taxis in Paris. One of his life’s ambitions is to be an ag pilot. He received his Commercial Pilot’s license in Canada, then attended Billy Howell’s Ag-Flight school in Bainbridge, Georgia. With approximately 50 hours of ag time acquired at Ag-Flight, he is still looking for that elusive first year’s seat. My only comment is, anyone that can navigate a taxi in Paris for more than forty years with only one small fender bender, surely can navigate an ag plane! Michel was very kind to Sandy and me. We could not have had a better host for this city, driving us throughout, explaining what we were seeing. Maybe someone will see the value in an experienced taxi driver becoming an ag pilot. Michel, I wish you the best of luck; bringing to a close, AgAir Update’s excursion throughout Europe. Next AgAir Update excursion; the Caribbean, to include Jamaica, St. Lucia, Martinique, Dominican Republic and last but not least, Cuba. agairupdate.com | A 41

Seat Wanted Arkansas Rice Pilot looking for a full-time seat. I have 802 and 502 time, dry, and herbicide experience. Looking for a job in Arkansas or Southeast Missouri. I’ll send a resume and references upon request. Contact at 870-565-6019 Ag Pilot seeking work with a reputable operation. 1226 hours TT, 779 Ag, 85 hours Turbine. A team player, with a background in agriculture, as a ground applicator. Also, an A&P mechanic with Ag aircraft experience. NAAA member. Resume available. Please Email: AgFlyer41@gmail.com Looking for an opportunity to move into a seat. I have good experience loading, having worked for a reputable operator in Southern Idaho for 10 months. Growing up on a ranch and working as a herdsman/ cowboy as a working career, I understand long hours, little sleep, and hard work. I have my CDL with experience hauling cattle, flatbed, tanker, dump trucks with pups, and utilizing it with the spray operation. I can operate machinery efficiently, boom trucks, auger trucks, forklifts, telehandlers, etc. I can be trusted to run a load pad by myself and know the importance of checking chemical labels, amount of chemical, water source, fuel, etc. I have experience in dry and liquid work, am efficient in switching from dry to liquid and vice versa. We did a lot of government work and know what it takes to take the “show on the road” whether it be for dry or liquid, and making due loading off of remote strips. I can weld, have mechanical aptitude (would love to get my A&P), and learn quickly. The gentleman I worked for is very knowledgeable in the industry and passes that well to his employees, but I also know that there is a lot more for me to learn, and am eager to do so. I have my Single Engine Commercial Certificate with an instrument rating. I am sitting at 500+ hours with 150+ of that being tailwheel. I currently own a Piper Pacer and am building time quickly. If you have any questions or interest, please reach out to me at 406-9300800. A lot of time I don’t have service so please leave a voicemail and or a text and I will be sure to get back to you.
