FROM THE COCKPIT

Bill Lavender bill@agairupdate.com

25 Years is a Long Time In this May edition of AgAir Update, there are several interesting articles. The cover story is about a Brazilian that I met over 25 years ago, Mr. Laudelino Bernardi of Cachoeiro do Sul, in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul. Mr. Bernardi, or Commadante Bernardi as Brazilian pilots are referred to, led an interesting life. One of his most noted accomplishments was training over 1,000 new ag-pilots through his aviation school of over 30 years. In AgAir Update’s Brazilian edition, a column called “Living Legends” features living, legendary persons in Brazilian ag aviation planned to feature an in-depth interview with Mr. Bernardi. Arrangements had been made for the article, but unfortunately, he passed away two weeks before the scheduled interview. Another interesting article in this edition is the passing of ownership of the long-established Mid-Continent Aircraft Company from its founder Dick Reade to Dennie Stokes and Chris Cobb. Mr. Reade had built his legacy, and by future planning, he guaranteed the continuation by handpicking his successors, Dennie and Chris. In the article, Dennie and Chris describe their relationship with Mr. Reade and how he had built the Mid-Continent family. Dennie and Chris assure the ag-aviation industry that business-asusual will continue at Mid-Continent.

impossible to see, and they tend to stretch during the heat of the day, albeit by not much, which attests to just how tight flying under them can get. I had two philosophies about flying a field with wires. If the wire appeared too tight to go under, flying over would usually work just as well. The other philosophy was to spray the wireinfested field with as much care as the farmer took planting it! In other words, don’t bust your butt trying to spray where an ag-plane does not belong. Mentioning NAAA, I would like to take the time to congratulate my old friend Andrew Moore on his recognition for serving the NAAA for the past 25 years. I met Andrew at one of the board meetings when he was first hired in 1997 as the Director of Legislative and Regulatory Affairs. He was much younger then, and to me, being a bit skeptical, he was too young for such a position. I got that wrong. Andrew has been an enormous asset to NAAA and has many association accomplishments attributed to his hard work and dedication. I have watched several NAAA CEOs come and go over the past 40 years. I’m happy that Andrew decided to make NAAA his “career home.” He would be a prize for many Washington, DC-based associations, but he has stuck with ours. The NAAA could not be any more fortunate. Congratulations, Andrew! Until next month, Keep Turning…

Recently, the NAAA released a newsletter warning ag-pilots of the dangers of wires. The timing could not have been better with the approaching spray season north of the equator. We all know wires present unique problems for treating crops by air. They are difficult or A 6 | agairupdate.com

Commander Bernardi The Eternal Legend Commander Laudelino Bernardi, director of CAVAG courses at Aero Agrícola Santos Dumont based in Cachoeira do Sul, RS.

By Juliana Turchetti Coppick Laudelino Bernardi was a legend in South American ag aviation. He was responsible for training over 1,000 agricultural pilots and played an integral role in advancing agricultural aviation south of the Equator. His influence extends to this day. Here is his story. Laudelino Bernardi was born October 3, 1940, in Tuparendi, northwest of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. His paternal grandfather, Ferdinando Bernardi, came from the Treviso region of Italy around 1865. His mother, a municipal teacher in Rio Grande do Sul, separated from her husband when Laudelino was still a child, taking the children to live with A 10 | agairupdate.com

her. Being the eldest of nine children and at just nine years old, Laudelino helped his mother raise and support his siblings from childhood through college. His efforts were not in vain. Today, all brothers have completed higher education and are dentists, teachers, psychologists and bank clerks. Bernardi was a student, a professional musician (he helped to found the band “OS ATUAIS,” which still exists today), and a football player. Bernardi graduated in accounting and later became a professor. In the 1960s, he joined Banco do Brasil as a bank clerk and lived in several cities in the northwest of Rio Grande do Sul, such as Três Passos, Três de Maio, and Santo Ângelo. ➤

Cmt. Bernardi with his wife Venina Bernardi and their son Cmte. Pelopidas Bernardi.

At the end of the 1960s, Bernardi married Venina Maria Bernardi, then a civil servant. In the early 1970s, their only child, Pelopidas, was born. In the 1970s, Bernardi joined the civil aviation world by taking Private, Commercial, and Flight Instructor courses. He then went through all the management positions to become the president of the Aeroclube de Santo Ângelo, RS. Mr. Bernardi was responsible for the modernization and acquisition of many new aircraft, the construction of office buildings and accommodations for the aviation college, and establishing professional training for hundreds of aviators who today fly with the airlines, commercial and agricultural aviation. Later in his career, Commander Bernardi remained active on the board of the Aeroclube de Cachoeira do Sul, RS as a tax advisor, where he also graduated as a Glider Pilot in the early 1990s. A 12 | agairupdate.com

In the mid-1970s, together with aviation activities, Bernardi performed at Aeroclube de Santo Ângelo, RS, and professional activities at Banco do Brasil. He graduated with a law degree from the Faculty of Right of Santo Ângelo, RS. At the end of the 1970s, Bernardi started his career as an agricultural pilot, taking the CAVAG course (agricultural aviation course) in São Paulo state, in the city of Sorocaba at CENEA, the National Agricultural Engineering Center. After graduating, he decided to start his own ag aviation business. He resigned from Banco do Brasil and founded Aero Agrícola Santos Dumont, Ltda. Bernardi established his ag aviation career before the vast implementation of agricultural aviation in Brazil, mainly in Rio Grande do Sul. This was when today’s modern aerial application techniques by plane were not available, at a time when farmers had no chance to save their crops from pests other than by using agricultural aviation. ➤

Medal of Merit Santos Dumont – a tribute received in 2015 by Cmte. Laudelin Bernardi.

Leading the way, Mr. Bernardi has always been a pioneer in agricultural aviation by utilizing the most modern techniques and new equipment. His company, Aero Agrícola Santos Dumont, was the first in RS to use GPS guidance in the 1990s, eliminating the need for flaggers. Mr. Bernardi built hangars and installed ag operations in Santo Ângelo, Passo Fundo, Tupanciretã, São Sepé, São Gabriel, Rosário do Sul, Alegrete, São Vicente do Sul. The company had around 12 Embraer Ipanemas, and Cessna C-188s serving from the center to the west of Rio Grande do Sul, responsible for aerial rice planting, fertilization with urea, and applying the necessary pesticides to save the A 14 | agairupdate.com

Gaucho region’s crops. The company treated almost half a million acres per year. In the mid-1980s, with Mr. Bernardi's excellent relationship with the city, he decided to settle permanently in Cachoeira do Sul, RS. Here, he chose to build the largest hangar in the region, capable of housing 12 ag aircraft. All facilities were approved by ANAC, certified by MAPA (Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock), and environmentally licensed by FEPAM (State Foundation for the Environment). The company is a pioneer in complying with legislation protecting the Brazilian environment, being a model for universities, colleges, and agricultural educational entities. ➤

Aero Agrícola Santos Dumont, Ltda. became the only authorized aircraft maintenance center in the region with ANAC (National Civil Aviation Agency) and remains the only approved facility in the area. The workshop is a division of the company and is dedicated to maintaining the company's fleet within the strict standards of ANAC's maintenance and control manuals. Since then, the company has also been engaged in aircraft, parts, and component sales. Commander Bernardi was certified as an Aircraft Maintenance Technician with CREA/ RS – Regional Council of Engineers and Architects and ANAC (US A&P/IA equivalent). At the beginning of the 1990s, Mr. Bernardi decided to implement the first private agricultural aviation school, CAVAG, in Brazil. To this day, it remains one of the most reputable schools in Brazil. Commander Bernardi was appointed an ANAC-accredited pilot examiner, becoming a regional aeronautical authority. With Brazilian and world agriculture growth, CAVAG has trained over 1,000 ag aviation pilots from Africa, Angola, Europe, Spain, United States, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. In the early 2000s, Mr. Bernardi was the founder of the first agricultural aviation company in Paraguay at the request of local aeronautical authorities. He also helped with the advancement of agricultural aviation in Uruguay. A moment that sums up the importance of the man who became a legend in Brazilian ag aviation occurred in 2015 when Bernardi was awarded the Medal of Merit Santos Dumont, an honor reserved for a select group of professionals who have provided outstanding services to the Air Force. Here is a brief excerpt from his testimony at the time: “Everything I did in aviation and will continue to do has always been due to the magnitude of the art of flying, of being able to transmit to idealists what little I know, the desire to feel useful to my fellow man. I am convinced that I have always planted good seeds and will continue to do so, as long as Aviador Maior gives me strength and support.” Pelópidas, Bernardi’s son, in addition to being a trained aviator, is also a businessman and owner of PBA Parts, which sells aircraft and aeronautical parts. His wife, Roberta Bonamigo Bernardi, is the administrative and financial supervisor of PBA's activities. Commander Bernardi's grandchildren, young Pythagoras (16) and Penelope (13) are already training as aviators.

Commander Laudelino Bernardi.

Author's Note: I graduated as an agricultural pilot at Aero Agrícola Santos Dumont in class number 60 (LX) in 2013. I remember this period as one of the most intense and challenging of my career. On my graduation day, Seu Bernardi (as we used to call him) gave me a firm handshake and said, “Girl, you won a game. Congratulations!” We kept in touch, and he had promised to provide me with the honor of telling his story for AgAir Update’s column, Lendas Vivas. A 18 | agairupdate.com

In the last edition, I wrote the article about Cmte Tito, Cmte. Bernardi sent me a video saying he would “pay his debt” to me for an autobiography. Unfortunately, on March 3, 2022, our dear Laudelino Bernardi left for the eternal flight of a unique legacy. May our great friend, mentor, and aviator rest in peace, and his teachings will undoubtedly keep his memory alive. Surely your good advice will be eternal flight companions of many aviators worldwide!

Interrupted Checks By Ted Delange

Picture this. A remote airstrip where a dozen ag aircraft are lining up for departure after a successful six-week forestry spraying program. They are all anxious to depart as a line of thunderstorms is rapidly approaching. Two aircraft get airborne, and a third lines up and departs. But not for long. The aircraft does a quick 180 and heads back toward the strip, the pilot radioing that he has a major oil leak and must land immediately. The ailing aircraft lands with a lot of oil originating from the oil access panel streaming down the fuselage and over the windscreen. Quickly coming to a stop and shutting down, the pilot climbs out and immediately checks for the leak. The culprit? A dipstick that was not replaced properly. The cause? The pilot was halfway through his walkaround when called over for a last-minute briefing on takeoff protocol. He returned to the aircraft and noticed the oil access panel had been left open. Being in a hurry, he quickly fastened it and hopped into the cockpit. Next one. A brand-new Thrush H80 is parked on the tarmac, and a pilot with little experience in type is about to take the aircraft for a checkout. He had almost completed his walkaround when the AMO called him over to talk about the new autostart procedures. That being covered, the pilot headed back to the aircraft and climbed in, going through the prestart checks with the checklist in hand to ensure being ‘by the book’ on the new start procedure. He was just about to initiate the start sequence when something twigged in the back of his mind about how far he had gotten in his walkaround. He initially thought it had been completed. Just to be sure, he decided to do the complete pre-flight again. Imagine his surprise when he arrived at the prop and found the air intake plug was still in A 20 | agairupdate.com

place, with no ‘remove before flight’ streamer. THAT could have been a bad day with a very expensive turbine cooked! One more for good measure. A Brave had just completed its annual, and the pilot was in a super hurry to get airborne and beat an approaching squall line. Already there was quite a crosswind, but nevertheless, the pilot elected to takeoff on the crosswind runway. Being empty the Brave got airborne quickly, but from the ground, it didn’t look good as it was yawing severely as the pilot corrected for the crosswind with ailerons. In fact, it looked like the pilot had lost control. The culprit: the rudder lock was still in place! Luckily the pilot safely returned to land safely on the into wind runway. The common element from these real-life examples is that the pilot was interrupted while going through checks. To be clear, this is not an article on whether to use checklists. Rather the focus is on the pilot being interrupted while going through a specific check, whether using a checklist as a guide or not. Even minor distractions that divert a pilot’s attention while completing a specific check can cause an item to be missed. A call from the operations center while taxiing causes the pilot to forget flaps on a short runway resulting in a much longer than planned takeoff roll. A hurried walkaround because of other aircraft waiting to be loaded, overlooking the fact that the spray pump still had tie clips on from a recent cross-country ferry. Changing a leaky nozzle while the aircraft is being refueled and not ensuring a fuel cap was closed securely. These can all make for unnecessary and unwanted jolts of adrenaline once airborne due to an improperly configured aircraft.

INTERNATIONAL

Aviation was one of the first industries to adopt the use of a standardized system of checks as an integral part of standard operating procedures. The goal was to ensure the aircraft was configured efficiently and correctly from startup to shutdown. Such a system is all well and good, but it only works if the standardized system of checks is used and used correctly. Any system is of little value if not used at all, but even missing a single critical item because of an interruption could result in an incident or accident. Compared to larger and more complex aircraft, a single-seat ag airplane is a model of simplicity, so much so that one could question the need for following a systematic check sequence. But here again, it doesn’t take much of an oversight to ruin your day, especially when you include navigation and dispersal equipment that can require considerable attention to set up properly. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The offseason is a great time to get acquainted or reacquainted with the checklists and other standardized procedures provided by the aircraft manufacturer. Take the time to review each item, particularly critical items such as engine failure at low altitude where you wouldn’t have time to get out a checklist. When buying a used aircraft where the

pilot’s flight manual has been lost or misplaced, most are available via a quick check on the Internet. In addition to formal sequences such as prestart, start, etc. other checks can be incorporated into your operations to help ensure safety and efficiency. One example is simply transiting to the field and back at a consistent altitude. If you find that you’re deviating from that altitude, you are probably getting fatigued. One check that was passed down to me early in my ag career by a very experienced operator has saved my bacon more than a few times. He called it the ‘last chance check’ as it was the very last item he completed just before powering up for takeoff. He stressed it was not a substitute for the Flight Manual checklists, but rather as a personal addendum to them. In the end, anything that helps to increase the safety and efficacy of your aerial application business is a good thing. Part and parcel of that are developing good habits that include being a stickler for standardized checks. That includes starting a specific check over again from the beginning when interrupted partway through. Always remember, if you look after your checks, your checks will look after you!

Air Repair Hosts First Responders to Learn About Ag Aviation Air Repair, out of Cleveland, Mississippi held a public safety education event last month to showcase ag aviation and agricultural aircraft to local first responders. The event was attended by approximately 50 volunteer firemen from Bolivar County, MS as well as the city of Cleveland Volunteer Fire Department, Bolivar County K9/Search and Rescue and Bolivar County Emergency Operations. Glenn Holloway also hosted a showing of the NAAA/NAAREF video directed towards responses to aerial application accidents. Literature was also distributed by Air Repair covering how to determine aircraft ownership, safely removing a pilot from a downed aircraft, and correct communications to the FAA. 18 of the A 22 | agairupdate.com

attendees were guests of Air Repair acting as hosts and guides. The goal of the event was to allow first responders to get up close and personal to an airplane to lower their intimidation factor and give them an entry-level of familiarity. Secondly, Air Repair wanted to give some quick reference to the type of fuel that may be on board, and the type of material, wet or dry, being applied. The presentation was strictly targeted to agricultural aircraft. Afterward, Air Repair gave cockpit tours of two AT-802s that additionally had the side panels removed for structure viewing. A catfish dinner was provided by Air Repair and catered by the Catfish Cabin of Boyle, MS.

Today's Mid-Continent Aircraft by Bill Lavender

From Mid-Continent Aircraft Partner Dennie Stokes-

Mid-Continent Aircraft Corporation has been in business serving the ag-aviation industry since 1949. Founded by the late Richard “Dick” Reade, the company has grown to serve ag aviators around the world from its centrally located base of operation in Hayti, Missouri. Dick Reade was a long range planner. Before his failing health led to his demise, he was already making arrangements for the company to continue after he was gone.

“Chris Cobb and I had been running the company for the last several years due to Dick's failing health. We will continue to operate as a one-stop, full service aviation company. We are extremely proud of all the Mid-Continent family. We are so thankful for Dick's foresight to diversify the company with Ag Aircraft and General Aviation Aircraft sales, worldwide parts sales, a fully staffed shop and an insurance division with a staff of six. Our goal is to continue to serve the industry by changing and adapting our services that fit the agriculture aviation and general aviation markets. Just as Dick set up Chris and I to lead Mid-Continent Aircraft into the future, Chris and I have already started making plans for our successors to be able continue for years to come. ➤

Today, the legacy of Mid-Continent Aircraft continues under the guidance of two long-time figures in ag aviation; Dennie Stokes and Chris Cobb. AgAir Update was able to catch up with Dennie and Chris to hear their side of the story about today’s Mid-Continent Aircraft. A 24 | agairupdate.com

L-R: Dennie Stokes and Chris Cobb.

“My involvement in aviation started when I was a teenager, earning my Private Pilot’s license and growing up with both sides of my family being involved in agriculture.” - Dennie Stokes

“My involvement in aviation started when I was a teenager, earning my Private Pilot’s license and growing up with both sides of my family being involved in agriculture. I always wanted to be an ag pilot. College got in my way for a couple years, but the ag flying bug bit and I was offered an opportunity to become an ag-pilot by Lynn Gibson of Gibson Flying Service. Lynn treated me like family and made an ag-pilot out of me. “With Gibson Flying Service being an Ag-Cat equipped operation, Dick would make sales calls and through that Dick and I became friends. With Lynn’s blessing, my wife, Lou, and I bought a small, one-plane operation and started Stokes Flying Service. I decided to upgrade to a Thrush and started doing business with Mid-Continent. It wasn’t long before the flying service grew to two Turbine Thrushes. Not only did the flying service grow, my friendship with Dick grew as well. A few years later Dick asked me if I would like to join the Mid-Continent Aircraft family. Of course I said, “Yes”. “Lou and I have two sons, Tracey and Greg, who have both become ag pilots flying Thrushes for Stokes Flying Service. Our grandson, Charles, is now a third generation ag-pilot flying

a Turbine Thrush for the company. I'm grateful for Dick being a mentor to my sons and helping me get them started on the right track in this industry. “We are also blessed with two other grandchildren, Emma and Reese, and a great grandson Kody. Tracey's wife, Tess, runs the office at the flying service and Greg's wife, April, teaches biology at a local school. “I believe Dick picked me to be his partner because of my love for the ag-aviation industry. He also helped to cultivate both my sons into not only the industry, but into the Mid-Continent family. “About ten years ago, Dick started the same nurturing process with longtime employee Chris Cobb. This led to Dick eventually pairing us as partners. Dick's long range thinking and judgment was a blessing to Chris, our families and me. I know Dick would be happy that Chris and I are following his lead. We are so thankful for the Mid-Continent family, to serve as its leaders and the fact that our sons Tracey, Greg, and Tanner are part of Mid-Continent Aircraft and will continue the legacy.” ➤

The Mid-Continent Aircraft Team.

From Mid-Continent Aircraft Partner Chris Cobb“I have lived in nearby Caruthersville, Missouri my entire life. I worked on a rice/bean/cotton farm during my college years before graduating from Arkansas State University in 1991 with a degree in accounting. After working one-year at the local hospital, an accounting position became available at Mid-Continent Aircraft. “Dick preferred someone young and local who was interested in a long, rewarding career. I fit that description. Dick took a huge risk in hiring me; someone he didn't know, had no experience and who had no idea what Mid-Continent actually did as a business. I started as the company A 28 | agairupdate.com

accountant in 1993 and was promoted to Executive Vice President in 2009. As of October 2021, I am partners with Dennie Stokes at Mid-Continent Aircraft. “I am married to my wife of 24 years, Tracy. We have a son, Tanner, who is graduating from the University of Mississippi in May with a Risk Management degree. He has already joined the Mid-Continent insurance team and family.” Dick Reade and Mid-Continent Aircraft’s legacies will continue to live on through the foresight of Dick Reade and the strength of the partnership between Dennie Stokes and Chris Cobb and the Mid-Continent family for many years to come.

NAAA Cautions Unmanned Aircraft Operators Not to Interfere with Low-Altitude Manned Agricultural Aircraft This Growing Season ALEXANDRIA, VA – April 18, 2022 – As the nation enters the upcoming growing season, the National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) is asking all unmanned aircraft (UA) operators to be mindful of low-altitude manned agricultural aircraft operations.

Equip UAs with visible strobe lights and high visibility marking.

Land your unmanned aircraft immediately when a low-flying aircraft is nearby.

Agricultural aviators treat 127 million acres of cropland in the United States each year and perform a variety of services that help farmers increase productivity and protect their crops.

Carry UA liability insurance.

“With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine restricting a huge portion of the world’s food supply, we cannot afford even a small disruption in the nation’s food supply chain,” NAAA CEO Andrew Moore said. “Agricultural aviators deliver nutrients, seeds and crop protection products to crops that will become consumers’ food and fiber supply in the U.S. and around the world. Their work cannot be delayed because of an unmanned aircraft not yielding to them, as is required by law. 2021 was a big year for aerial applicators, and we expect demand for aerial application services to be even higher in 2022.” Agricultural aviators fly as low as 10 feet off the ground, meaning they share airspace with UAs that are restricted to flying no more than 400 feet above ground level. For this reason, NAAA urges UA operators to do everything they can to avoid ag aircraft doing important low-altitude work. NAAA recommends that unmanned aircraft operators: •

Give the right of way to a manned aircraft. It’s the law.

Equip drones with tracking technology, such as ADS-B In, so you will know ADS-B Out-equipped manned aircraft positions.

Get certified and well-trained in operating an unmanned aircraft.

Contact local agricultural aviation operations before flying by consulting AgAviation.org/findapplicator.

B 2 | agairupdate.com

Small UAs can be virtually invisible—and potentially lethal—to agricultural aviators, air ambulance helicopters, law enforcement and other low-flying manned aircraft operating in the same airspace. In a test conducted by the Colorado Agricultural Aviation Association and other stakeholders, including manned and unmanned aircraft organizations, and the state of Colorado, no pilot operating a manned aircraft could continuously visually track a 28-inch-wide drone when flying at regular speeds. While they might be spotted for a second, UAs are not constantly visible to pilots, meaning it is up to the drone operator to avoid a collision. When birds hit an ag aircraft, they can break through an aircraft’s windshield, causing deadly accidents. A study conducted by the Alliance for System Safety of UAS through Research Excellence (ASSURE) showed UA collisions with aircraft cause more damage than a bird strike of comparable size would, due partially to unmanned aircraft’s dense motors and batteries, as opposed to a bird made mostly of water, feathers, hollow bones and sinew. At this moment when we’re all depending on the continued safe, affordable and abundant supply of food, fiber and bioenergy, don’t forget America’s agricultural aviators are working in the skies to help farmers produce their crops. Manned ag aircraft are also flying at low altitudes to combat fires and conduct public health applications to eradicate disease-carrying mosquitoes and other deadly pests. If you’re going to fly an unmanned aircraft this summer, please be responsible and do everything you can to avoid agricultural aircraft. Maynard Lund, Industry Icon, Passes in February Maynard Lund, 88, a longtime Ritzville resident, passed away peacefully due to complications from acute renal failure after a brief illness, at East Adams Rural Hospital in Ritzville,Washington. Maynard went to be with his Lord on February 10th, 2022, reuniting with loved ones who passed before him. His funeral was celebrated at the American Legion Hall on February 19th, 2022. Pastor Steve Schofstoll officiated with Kirk Danekas delivering a heartfelt eulogy. With their ag planes, pilots Gavin Morse, Jared Felder, and Rob Mcguier performed a very moving Missing Man Formation flyover to honor Maynard after the funeral service. His friends and family then gathered at the Ritzville Eagles Club #2739 where they had been graciously invited for a meal and the sharing of memories. Per Maynard’s wishes, interment of his ashes will be at the Beaver Creek Churchyard Cemetery located near Williston, North Dakota. Maynard was baptized and grew up attending this church, which is a few miles from the old family ranch and Lund’s Landing. The Links, oneof his favorite golf courses, is also nearby. Williston held a special place in his heart. Throughout his life, he often returned to visit family and friends. Maynard was born in Great Falls, Montana to Howard and Maud (Ray) Lund. When he was two, he and his adored big sister Marlene moved with their parents to what would become the family farm/cattle ranch in Nesson Valley near Williston, North Dakota. Maynard attended Nesson Valley grade school, a one-room schoolhouse. The friendships forged during those childhood years remained for the rest of his life. Maynard had fond memories of him and his sister Marlene riding their horses to school and working the cattle ranch with his family. This was where he developed his lifelong independent spirit, love of the land, and being outdoors. Maynard was level-headed though adventuresome starting early in life. He and his cousin swam across the Missouri River and back again in their late teens! He enjoyed football and boxing in high school, graduating Williston High School in 1953. After graduating, he continued working the family cattle ranch with his father, but spent a short stint logging in the Montana forests and working the North Dakota oil fields. B 4 | agairupdate.com

Maynard met Ellie Jangula, a teacher, and together they learned the Jitterbug swing dance and lit up dance floors wherever they went. They were married in Napoleon, North Dakota in August of 1958. Maynard and Ellie shared 35 years of marriage together. Their first child Vonnie was born in 1964. Then in 1966 they adopted a two-week-old baby girl, Vickie. Their last child, Vanessa, was born in 1968. Maynard and his wife Ellie built a beautiful home, yard, and garden together, raised their three daughters, ran two businesses, and were very active in the local community. His family has many great, fun memories of him taking them snow skiing on the winter weekends. A responsible, dependable, patient, and compassionate father. In the early 1960s, he spent two years as an officer in the Williston Police Department while he learned to fly through a good friend, Cal Marburger of Williston. Maynard flew as an ag pilot for the Marburger brothers in North Dakota and would then follow the crop seasons, flying in Wisconsin, Mississippi, Washington, Oregon, Montana, and Idaho. In the late 1960s, he moved his family to Ritzville, Washington, working as an ag pilot. He started his own successful agricultural aviation operation, Lund Flying Service in 1971, which he ran and flew for until his early 70s. He flew helicopters at the start of his business, later returning to fixed wing ag planes. He also owned Tachell Aviation in the Tri-Cities, where he met master mechanic/inspector/pilot, Charlie Landells. They became good longtime friends and started a business together, L&L Helicopters, in Montana/Idaho. His adventurous spirit led him to ferry ag planes across the Rocky Mountains, bad weather or not, flying at treetop height following roads if need be, flying aerobatics in air shows with his T-6 Texan, and crop dusting until his early 70s. Maynard’s pilot friends would comment on his natural piloting ability. Maynard was a very calm, cool, and collected man, but also good-natured and fun-loving. He was a volunteer EMT and a volunteer fireman. He flew law enforcement personnel searching for illegal drug operations and participated in search, rescue, and recovery. He even went skydiving with Skydive West Plains at the age of 80!Maynard was a gifted and accomplished aviator who dedicated his career to agricultural aviation. Some of his accomplishments and awards: Served as a board member of the National Agricultural Aviation Association. President of the Pacific

He was first on the golf course in the spring, and last off in the late fall. Forever the realistic optimist, he took retirement in stride, embracing volunteer service and golfing. He was still dancing in his 70s.He greatly enjoyed the camaraderie and banter he shared with everyone he knew. Maynard was a highly principled, ethical, and honest man. He was down to earth, with a wide circle of friends, appreciating all. Over the years he was able to anonymously help several organizations and individuals in need. He had a humble, generous, and kind heart. Never one to complain, adversity was met with his forever calming “time will tell” manner. As friends of Maynard said, Maynard was Maynard up until the end. Maynard was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Maud Lund, his sister Marlene Eide, and nephew David Eide. He is survived by his ex-wife Ellie Lund, who remained a good friend of his, three daughters: Vonnie, Vickie, and Vanessa, six grandchildren: Matthew, Crystal, David, Ryan, Jacob, and Audrey, two nieces, and a nephew. His was an amazing life very well lived. Maynard was a wonderful man, father, and role model. His kind twinkly eyes, warm smile, and sense of humor will always be remembered. A WING AND A PRAYER

Carlin Lawrence carlin@agairupdate.com

God’s Word In Our Everyday Life “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice, I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27). Do you believe that God speaks to His people? Do you believe that God is controlling the lives of people and nations? Do you believe that God cares about what happens on this earth? If Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior you should believe that God speaks to you in His Word, the Bible. The constant message of the Old and New Testament is that God’s people listen to and obey the voice of God. The only place of security for Christians is for them to obey God’s direction for their life—there’s no other point of security on this earth. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). One of the purposes of the Word of God is to give us God’s perspective on how we’re to live our life to please Him. But there’s also a prophetic emphasis to the Bible, because God knows the future of His universe. “The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness” (2 Peter 3:10-11). It’s not uncommon for Christians to try to get God to see our life from our perspective.

B 10 | agairupdate.com

“Lord, don’t You see the problems I’m having; can’t You do something about this situation I’m in?” The Bible teaches us to understand that God allows our problems to build our faith and to help other people who will go through those same kind of problems. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). When we become a Christian we’re to learn and adopt God’s purposes for our life. Think how powerful that can be in our everyday life! When Jesus approached Jerusalem He wept because the Jewish religious leaders failed to recognize the tremendous suffering that was going to come upon Jerusalem because they failed to recognize God’s purposes for their life. What about you? Your attitude towards God’s Word will determine your attitude towards God. If you’re indifferent about God’s Word, you will be indifferent about God Himself. If God’s Word takes second place in your life, then God has taken second place in your life—you cannot escape that fact! Many Christians decide which parts of the Bible are significant, and which parts are irrelevant, looking at God’s Word as some kind of heavenly menu. We want to listen to a little bit of this topic, and a little bit of that topic, because those are the topics we’re interested in. We push aside the parts that we think are not relevant for today. We ignore major parts

UNITED STATES

of God’s Word because we’re spiritually lazy or don’t believe the total Word of God is important. By doing this we’re putting ourselves in the place of authority and judging God’s Word. But don’t think for a minute that we’re getting away with our casual attitude towards the Word of God. “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered, laid bare for the eyes of Him whom we must give an account” (Hebrews 4:13). “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God” (Colossians 3:1). When people hear your words and see how you act, can they say, “There’s a person that’s is being led by the Holy Spirit!” If we haven’t learned to seek those heavenly places, our witness for Jesus Christ will have very little effect on the unbelievers of this world. Worldly minded Christians usually are not good witnesses for Jesus Christ. “Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God” (James 4:4) Christians are constantly asking when the Lord is going to rapture the church out of this world. But a better question for Christians to ask themselves is how good is my relationship with God and His purposes for my life? Am I being obedient to God’s will for my life? Or am I indifferent and casual towards God’s Word, and hoping God isn’t paying attention to my attitude towards Him and His Word. The writers of the New Testament lived their lives as if Jesus’ return was imminent. They believed that Jesus could return and take His church out at any moment. That’s the same attitude that all Christians should have. “We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality” (1 Corinthians 15:51-53). “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life…Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy” (Jude 1:20-21, 24).

“Tens of thousands of gallons measured in three years with near 100% accuracy.” “Thrilled with it!” “Love the safety and accuracy!”

CRAYMER’S COUNSEL

Robert Craymer - robertc@covingtonaircraft.com

The Accessory Gearbox The PT6A is a modular engine. One benefit of a modular design is that maintenance and troubleshooting are easier. Most instructions and directions are provided from the pilot’s point of view. Looking at an engine from the pilot’s perspective, the first module you come to is the accessory gearbox (AGB). In the last few weeks, I have had several phone calls about troubleshooting and maintenance items with regard to the AGB. The accessory gearbox is where the operation of the engine begins. The starter generator is installed on the accessory gearbox. The fuel pump and fuel control, as well as the Ng tachometer, are located on the gearbox. For some customers I talk to, the AGB also has the most critical unit on an AG airplane, the air conditioner. Operating and engine control also begin with the cam box in this part of the engine. As you can see, there are a lot of essential components on the back part of the engine. Some issues can arise with regard to the AGB. Inspection of this module is never high on anyone’s list unless there is a problem. The first issue - oil leak? There are five seals on the back of the engine, known as Garlock seals, and they seal around each of the drive shafts. When we start to see oil on the back of the engine, it is the first thing that we check. How do you know which one or ones might be leaking? Each seal pad or accessory is connected to a drain. A simple bag attached to each drain individually will tell us which one is leaking. What happens if all the seals are leaking? Some airframe installations use a rubber hose on the vent system for the air/oil separator. Exposure to turbine oil over time can cause the inside of this hose to begin to close. This restriction can cause back pressure in the AGB, causing all the seals to leak. Next issue, oil on the right side of the airplane? Inside the AGB, there is a carbon seal. The starter/generator runs on the face of this seal. From time to time, we have seen this carbon seal damaged. As the starter/generator is removed B 12 | agairupdate.com

and reinstalled, the edge of the gear could be “bumped.” This could damage, crack or break the carbon seal. Oil can exit with the air being vented overboard through the breather tube if this happens. This can lead to oil down the left side. This is replaceable in the field. However, you have to remove the AGB from the engine. Your aircraft maintenance manual may ask you to measure the spline wear on the gears in the AGB. This may be a real issue if you are running a “dry” spline starter. If the spline lubrication maintenance is not followed, the result can be worn gear teeth. If you find worn teeth on your gear, the engine maintenance manual says to replace that gear within the next 50 hours. No one wants to go out in the morning, and the starter won’t spin the engine. Another AGB/Starter generator issue is electrical discharge damage or EDD. If you have a starter/generator failure, an inspection of the AGB needs to be done. There is a possibility for arcing to have occurred inside the engine. We have found arcing on the starter gear, #1 and #2 bearing associated with a starter/generator failure. Air Tractor has a service letter regarding this issue. This issue is not exclusive to AG aircraft, as we have found damage on several airplane types. Just remember that a starter issue needs to be investigated. The filler cap is also located on the AGB. This part is handled almost every day when checking the oil. Look at the filler cap the next time you stick your oil. Ensure that the gage is tight and there is no looseness of the cap when you lock it back in place. If you find looseness in either of these areas, then get it fixed. Finally, there is an inspection call out for the internal scavenge pump screen. On the bottom of the AGB, there is either a plug or a chip detector. Remove the detector or plug with a flashlight, mirror, and, if needed, your borescope. Look at the scavenge pump screen inside and for carbon,

paint, or any foreign debris that may be on the screen. If debris is found, clean the screen. Be advised there is oil in the AGB, and when you pull the plug, the oil will come out. The maintenance manual says to collect this oil, and if it is not contaminated, you can return it to the engine. That is a quick look at one of the modules that make up the PT6A. Hopefully, it provides a little awareness of how the engine is constructed. This information should also help with some troubleshooting tips. It is incredible how the modular design lends itself to maintenance and repair

for an engine that was designed in the 1950s and first built in the 1960s. Robert Craymer has worked on PT6A engine and PT6A powered aircraft for the past three decades, including the last 25+ years at Covington Aircraft. As a licensed A&P mechanic, Robert has held every job in an engine overhaul shop as well as being an instructor of PT6A Maintenance and Familiarization courses for both pilots and mechanics. Texas Agricultural Aviation Association Tours Air Tractor and Transland via TAAA Newsletter TAAA held its Spring Board Meeting in Wichita Falls and Olney in early March of 2022. According to the TAAA, the meeting was very well attended and was one of the best meetings the association has hosted in quite a while.

Future conventions are currently being planned for Lubbock, Corpus Christi and College Station, so stay tuned for details on those events. TAAA’s “slot” for the convention is the second Wednesday in January, so the 2023 event will January 11 – 13. Details to follow.

TAAA usually spends about an hour at each meeting on conference planning, financials, and other administrative matters. TAAA is in great financial shape, even after losing the conference revenue they would normally have earned in 2021. The 2022 convention ended on a positive note with solid attendance and very positive feedback despite several Covid-related cancellations.

The real purpose of the board meeting, however, was to get briefings and tours at the Transland facility in Wichita Falls, TX and at the Air Tractor factory in Olney, TX. The board spent several hours at Transland in the afternoon, had dinner at the best steak house in Wichita Falls, and then reconvened for several hours the next morning at Air Tractor in Olney.

Paul Bruton, 2022 TAAA President (above left) Representative James Frank, Owner of Transland (above right) Jim Hirsch, President of Air Tractor (below right)

The TAAA simply cannot express our appreciation enough to State Representative James Frank, whose day job is at Transland, and to Jim Hirsch, the President of Air Tractor, for taking so much time with our group. They led tours, answered questions, got lots of feedback, and everyone learned plenty from the experience. There is no question that global events are impacting dayto-day operations at both companies, especially in the area of logistics and sourcing of raw materials. Although most of Air Tractor’s raw materials are sourced domestically, many pieces and parts are not always readily available due to supply chain constraints. Mr. Hirsch did report that Air Tractor expects to build 194 ag planes in 2022 and that all production slots through the 1st quarter of 2023 have deposits on them. About two-

thirds of these planes are being exported. They also learned that the 1002 aircraft project is currently building a brand new prototype after a complete redesign and saw some very cool military-related special use aircraft that are under construction. The TAAA also learned from Rep. Frank that field testing for the new Falcon GPS system will begin within the next 30 days, and that they are fully stocked and ready to go for both the G4 and Bantam GPS systems. They got a very close look at the laser cutting equipment and also spent some time talking about the continuous R & D development at Transland on variable rate and flow control technologies for both liquid and dry materials as well as both high and low volume applications. All the production lines of equipment that Transland makes for the ag aviation industry were running when TAAA was there. agairupdate.com | B 17

REGINA’S PERSPECTIVE

Regina Farmer regina.farmer@chem-man.com

Regional Adaptations In my earlier years (in the days of DOS operating systems), I had a family with a small child and couldn’t travel too far away. Since I’m from Arkansas, I focused my business on the nearby states of Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. Later, when we started going to the national conventions, we began to cover more states. I started noticing early on that each business had its workflow and how unique each region was. Very few customers cared about printing their applied log data from their GPS systems in the south. However, in the Mid-West, many customers require it before they could receive payment for their work.

B 18 | agairupdate.com

Adding this feature was a challenge, but has been very beneficial to the operator so they can make their customers happy. The “corn run,” as it’s often called, comes upon you quickly, and you better be prepared. Many times, these operations and/or applicators are contracted out. Many pilots come from all over to help. Last year some of my operators got so busy they said they couldn’t handle it all. I love that the Driftwatch program has added a feature for the detasselers to log in to their system and mark the area they will be working in. Since Chem-Man streams with this program, the area will instantly display the detasselers area on the map as an obstruction. Anything to help from causing an issue is always a good thing.

UNITED STATES

In California, there is a very different workflow. Most often, a recommendation will be made by a consultant and then sent to the operation. We stream with a program called Agrian that automatically downloads the recommendation into our system so it doesn’t have to be re-entered (although the job can also be added manually). Then there is a limited time period after the job has been sprayed where the operator must report this information to the county. We have an interface with “Calag,” the central unit that reports data to the counties. We are seeing more operations that work with timber spraying and must upload the shapefiles for the area to be sprayed. Then they must report these files back to the entity they are spraying for with the applied data. (Sometimes this may be a governmental entity and sometimes not). In the south, most operations prefer to print out all of their invoices on one statement, while in other areas, most often individual invoices. Some areas are more prone to selling chemicals and need a feature (spreadsheet) to be downloaded so they can get reimbursed by certain chemical companies that offer this option.

Some of the new trends for many operations are wireless GPS systems, pre and post notifications of the areas sprayed, and emailing of statements (due to many regions having issues with snail mail). As we grow, we see even more requirements, such as particular forms, etc., that are starting to be required. Years ago, I had about 20-30 options on a screen called “System Settings.” Now we probably have over 200 options with multiple tabs. We get daily requests for many more options. I used to tell myself, “One day, Chem-Man will cover every type of request and option that is needed.” However, I’ve realized that, as with everything else, adaptation to change will always be necessary due to the evolving laws, technology, and the demand for more data. I always want to please everyone and wish that development was faster. I realize you’ll never please everyone, but we strive to do our best. Our customers are great, and I always appreciate it when they are thankful for the updates. Y’all stay safe out there!

SPREADING FACTS

Michelle Miller - michelle@thefarmbabe.com

EGG-xaggerated Egg Myths! Here we are again, busting more agriculture myths! There is just something about food that tends to attract incorrect information and although it shows up quickly, it takes forever to dispel. Let’s talk about the continued exaggerated myths surrounding eggs. Production Styles- There are many different types of production styles for egg-laying hens. This includes caged animals (we’ll call this conventional since it is still the industry average), cage-free, and free-range, or some variation of the sort. Caged animals are still largely the most abundant types of layer houses across the U.S., this is because it is easier for farmers to make sure each hen has access to the appropriate resources like food, water, and laying space. Cage-free birds live in open style houses and are not required to have access to the outdoors. Both of these styles provide climate controlled houses and unlimited access to feed and water. Free-range poultry are typically housed outdoors, with access to some kind of housing or protective structure. These houses may or may not be climate controlled, and may or not be incorporated in some type of rotational grazing of pastures. Regardless of the style you prefer to purchase, all of these eggs are safe, wholesome, and an excellent source of nutrients.

B 20 | agairupdate.com

Poultry Diets- Chickens are not vegetarians, they are omnivores. Poultry require certain amino acids that only meat can provide, if they are not consuming meat they have to be supplemented with synthetic amino acids. Again, chickens are not vegetarians so the “vegetarian fed” label is a bit of a moot point… and aren’t pretty much all other livestock like pigs and cattle fed “vegetarian diets?” A meaningless label. Emotional Packaging- If the package says anything about the names or emotions of the chickens, the price is likely inflated and preying on consumer ignorance. Chickens are happy when they have food, water, and a safe place to live, which all production styles provide. Egg Color- Regardless of shell color, the edible portion of eggs (yolk & egg white) contain pretty much the same nutrient levels. Eggs come in a variety of colors, brown, white, blue, pinks, greens, spotted and plain, these shell colors are simply related to the breed of chicken that laid it. Don’t overpay for novelty, brown eggs are the same as white eggs, just a different breed.

Yolk Color- Similarly, yolk color does not indicate anything about the eggs quality or nutrition. Chickens who consume more carotenoids will produce darker yellow/orange colored yolks. Typically you will see these darker yolks in poultry that have access to pasture or dried forage as vegetation contains higher levels of beta-carotenoids than grains. Yolk color is not an absolute indicator of quality or nutrition and is easily manipulated with feed ingredients. Cholesterol- For many years Americans were concerned about the cholesterol level in eggs. Years ago even the Nutritional Guidelines for Americans had points regarding the number of eggs you should consume in a week or the level of cholesterol in your diet. In today’s guidelines there is little to no mention of cholesterol and only the benefits of eggs are discussed. New science and research has proven that there is a great benefit of eggs in a healthy, balanced diet. Egg Whites Versus Egg Yolk- Based on media headlines, many people believe that throwing out the egg yolks was a healthier alternative than eating the whole egg. However, when someone throws out the yolk they are throwing out the largest portion of nutrients in the egg. The yolk contains nearly 100% of the vitamins in eggs, 76% of the energy, and nearly half of the protein. Eggs contain one of the few natural sources of vitamin D and more bioavailable sources of antioxidants that prevent age-related macular generation (can result in blindness).Consuming the whole egg (yolk & white) is of the greatest benefit. All in all, eggs are a delicious and affordable source of important nutrients that can be used in nearly any meal, breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The whole egg has a vital place in a healthy, balanced diet.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Not All “Air Tractors” Are Mono-Wing by Bill Lavender HUNGARY/CROATIA — After a recent trip to attend the 2nd International Conference for Dromader owners at the PZLMielec factory in Mielec, Poland, I was able to coordinate an Eastern Europe excursion with Air Tractor’s international dealer, Janko Zlataric of MMCS based in Augsburg, Germany. One doesn’t think of Hungary and Croatia as being countries with agricultural aviation activities. However, during the Cold War years, Hungary and Croatia (then known as part of Yugoslavia) had numerous ag aircraft, albeit most were of the Antonov An-2 and M18 Dromader variety. The An-2 is still prominently used for ag flying throughout postEastern bloc countries. There are some M18s, and a few Cessna-188 aircraft. Today, the Croatian government utilizes six AT-400 series Air Tractors purchased in 2000 for fire fighting missions. My wife, Sandy, and I were extremely fortunate to have Janko (Croatian-born) as our host for our travels in Hungary and Croatia. We rendezvoused at the Krakow, Poland airport, where Janko flew in from Augsburg in his 2000 year model Ovation Mooney. Although I’m partial to Beechcraft planes, I was impressed with this late model Mooney. B 28 | agairupdate.com

After a snow shower (March 24th) passed over at Krakow International, Janko wet the wings of the Mooney with de-ice fluid and we departed for our base destination, Budapest, Hungary. From Budapest, we would travel out on Monday and Tuesday to visit with a Hungarian operator and a Croatian operator. Wednesday we returned to Augsburg, flying the Mooney over the Austrian Alps. You should see the pictures! I’m also a believer of twin engines in IFR and mountainous conditions, however as you can deduct, the Mooney performed just fine. With Janko at the controls, Sandy and I were in about as safe hands as possible. For many years, Janko was the European Mooney dealer. During those years he ferried 30 single engine Mooney aircraft from Texas to Europe following the Great Circle route passing over Goose Bay, Canada to Greenland, then Iceland and into Europe. As an Air Tractor dealer, Janko has also delivered several Air Tractors to Europe. Additionally, Janko has flown other aircraft both directions across the Big Pond. Of course, he didn’t tell me this reassuring information until we were on top of the icy cloud deck flying south towards Budapest at 195 knots in the Mooney!

Monday we departed the Budapest airport for Szeged, a small town in southeast Hungary, near the Romania border. Here, I met Hungarian ag pilot Rozsavolgyi Vilmos, owner and operator of Agro-Aero 2000. I asked Vilmos why he named his company Agro-Aero 2000, when he actually formed it in 1994. He told me he had hopes that by the year 2000 his company would be successful. “The Change”, the end of the Cold War years, was when Hungary dissolved its state-owned ag aviation operation, known as HAS, Hungary Aviation Services (in English?). The large operation of more than 200-300 aircraft to include, An-2s, M18 Dromaders, 150 Kamov helicopters and 10 MD500 helicopters ceased operations in 1992. The aircraft were sold, many to HAS pilots to start their own companies. HAS began in 1959 with the Polkiarpow BO-2, a biplane. Years passed and HAS ag aircraft evolved into the An-2 and helicopters. When the company dissolved, it was employing more than 1,700 workers, 400 pilots and 500 mechanics. This created a high rate of unemployment in the agricultural regions of Hungary. Other state-owned companies were privatizing as well. In its heyday, HAS was structured with its administration at the center and four branches with subdivisions spread throughout the agricultural regions of Hungary. The company often flew in excess of 45,000 hours a year. Some pilots flew more than others. Vilmos usually flew 400 to 750 hours a year. The major crops were sugar beets, corn, onions and sunflower. It took Vilmos two years to finally be able to buy his An-2 aircraft. At first, after HAS dissolved, he rented the planes. When he was able to afford it, he bought them for $2,000 USD each, until he finally owned three An-2s and a C-188. Now, Vilmos hardly flies at all, 80-100 hours a year. Even though his company has four ag planes, the farmers have no money and the crops mostly go untreated. When there is flying to be done, it is over corn, sunflowers and sugar beets. Also, a new demand for mosquito applications holds much promise. After a lunch of fish soup, we bid Vilmos good bye. He offered to sell one of his An-2s, with fresh paint, newly overhauled engine and prop, ready to fly for $30,000 USD. It was a good offer, but the Mooney was waiting.

Agro Aero 2000’s fleet of An-2 ag aircraft with a lone Cessna 188. Is this a new line of Air Tractor? Spotted in Osijek, Croatia where this company refers their An-2s as an “Air Tractor”.

Tuesday our excursion directed the Mooney to take us south into Croatia to the town of Osijek. During the Serbian occupation and Serbian-Croatian war, this town was surrounded on three sides by the Serbs. Many people were killed, and it was easy to spot the bullet holes in the buildings and mortar/grenade damage, even seven years later. Our host, Zoran Zupanic and his pilot, Josip Vidovic, met us at the old Osijek airport where his operation, Sparrow, is based. Even though there are at least five languages spoken throughout the regions of post-Yugoslavia, there seems to be something about naming the ag operations in English. Sparrow’s competitor, based on the same airfield, is known as “Air Tractor”! (see photo) Although neither of these two companies utilize the world renown Air Tractor from the U.S.A., Zoran says when the time is right, he will replace his An-2s with the yellow and blue Air Tractor. Sparrow operates two An-2s in the Osijek region flown by owner Zoran and pilot Josip. Josip started flying in 1974, always in then-Yugoslavia. He began in the An-2, changed to the Dromader, and now flies the An-2. The spraying company in Yugoslavia was Poljoprivredna Aviacija; not state owned, nor private, but owned by an entity more like a cooperative. Until 1989, there were plenty of spray jobs. The farms were owned by the State, however, with the fall of communism and the Soviet Union, the farming stopped, at least on a wide scale, and therefore the ag flying stopped as well. B 30 | agairupdate.com

Like HAS in Hungary, Poljoprivredna sold off its assets to its employees at a low price. Sparrow bought two An-2s and began its work in 1994. Before 1989, Poljoprivredna had contracts for 35,000 hectares of mosquito applications and another 400,000 hectares of agricultural flying (over one million acres). Now, only 15,000 hectares of forestry work were made by Sparrow with less than 50,000 hectares of agricultural work. Agricultural flights consist of applications on grain, sugar beets, sunflower and canola. Mosquito applications have been made in the past, as well. Sometimes the mosquito applications are made at 3-5 liters/hectare using Micronair atomizers. However, the smoker method for mosquito control employed by Sparrow works the best. Sparrow mixes 800 liters of diesel with 25 liters of malathon and can cover 1,0001,200 hectares. The company incorporates a chemical (malathion) injector into a special exhaust stack that smokes out the mosquitoes. The biggest problem is that environmental conditions must be perfect, so the smoke settles downward and not drift off target. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times, but there cannot be an inversion, and the smoke must continually cool so it will penetrate the plant canopy.

Maintenance for a helicopter is tough enough, but to be based in Hungary during a depressed economy and utilize this Russian Kamov 26 helicopter with its twin rotors and pair of M-14 nine cylinder radial engines for spraying operations has to be a challenge for Rozsavolgyi Vilmos of Agro-Aero 2000. Although the Kamov 26 has a 750-liter hopper, when temperatures are hot 600 liters is a full load. The M-14 engines consume 200 liters of fuel per hour. (L-R) Janko Zlataric of MMCS, Sparrow pilot Josip Vidovic and owner Zoran Zupanic, with yours truly at Osijek, Croatia airport.

Times for ag pilots are extremely tough for Hungary and Croatia. During the Cold War, aerial spraying was plentiful. Pilots made above average wages compared to other citizens. They were given a base pay of $1,000 USD per month, plus $0.25 per hectare with a car allowance and paid travel expenses. Now, Sparrow has to accept payment in commodities, and often has a 20% loss in the exchange. Most of the accounts have to be financed until harvest, while at the same time Sparrow must pay a 22% Value Added Tax when the invoice B 32 | agairupdate.com

is written. Even so, in Croatia there is a huge demand for forestry aerial applications, such as fire fighting and fertilizing. However, the forests are owned by the government, and the government has no money for the applications. Hope remains high with the ag aviation companies of Hungary and Croatia. If they can survive during these times, they will do well should good times return. Like in most businesses, it is an economical situation. As the two countries recover from “The Change” to free enterprise, their agricultural outlook should improve.

Mabry I. Anderson An Insider’s History of Agricultural Aviation

The Spread to the Eastern Seaboard — Chapter Five

Dick Nixholm of Downstown Aero Crop Service, Vineland, New Jersey, spraying with Stearman in 1966.

Some people believe that the heavily populated Eastern Seaboard of the United States is mostly black-top with no real agricultural activity. They are wrong. They forget the verdant flatlands along New Jersey's southeastern border, particularly in the areas around Vineland, Bridgeton, Millville, and Malaga. Almost in sight of huge, metropolitan skylines, a wide variety of crops, especially vegetables and fruits, flourish in a rural atmosphere.

popular product. Great tracts of cultivated blueberries that are marketed worldwide are also found there. Extensive woodland interspersed with natural lakes and marshes, with abundant wildlife and fish, make the region doubly attractive. Hunting, fishing, and farming are a way of life for many of the area's residents. It is no wonder that pioneer agricultural aviators invaded this area quite a few years before they settled into much of the Atlantic northeast.

Literally mile upon mile of garden row crops like cabbage and tomatoes compete with huge fields of flowers. For example, gladiolas, which are produced by the millions in this region, are supplied to florists and nurserys all over the country.

According to legend, Jimmy Holsenbeck, a pilot of the 1920s and a veteran of the famous Finklea Brothers Air Service at Leland, Mississippi, first introduced agricultural aviation to this region. J.O. Dockery of Stuttgart, Arkansas, says Holsenbeck began annual migrations to the cranberry bogs of New Jersey as early as 1931.

Within easy flying distance of Vineland, which is near the center of this heavily farmed area, lie more rolling lands covered with orchards, especially apples and peaches. Also nearby, on lands lying near little communities like Pine Barren, Chatsworth, and Hog Wallow, are vast cranberry bogs that produce most of the country's supply of this

He operated his own Stearman C3B around Chatsworth and Hog Wallow. Records of his venture are very sketchy and disappear entirely beginning about 1934. At approximately that time, the first real commercial ag flying ventures began in the area when Archie Wilson and Jack Faulkner set up permanent operations after migrating from Florida.

These men were real promoters, especially Wilson. They successfully sold the region's growers on airplane use, especially the huge Seabrook Farms that dominated truck farming at that time. Much of their early flying was done on these farms according to Mike Brago, a veteran pilot and mechanic who began working for Faulkner Air Service in 1936. Wilson and Faulkner operated independently of each other. But, in many respects, they were virtual partners. Aircraft, pilots, and equipment were continuously swapped, according to Brago.

"I remember that they also had at least one Waco 10 with a J-5 engine and an early model Stinson with a J-5," recounts Brago. "However, by the time I went to work for Faulkner Air Service in 1936, most of the work was still being done with the Pitcairn, the Robin, and some assorted Wacos. Jack Faulkner, the original owner, was killed in an auto accident in Florida before I began working for them and his widow took on the operation when this occurred."

Among the aircraft used were a converted Pitcairn PAS Mailwing and a Curtis Robin passenger aircraft. Both of these planes had been converted to combination duster/ sprayers and were flown extensively along with other more commonly used agricultural aircraft.

Some of the early pilots who flew for these firms besides Mike Brago were Joe Toth, Jimmy Crawford, "Dag" North, Jimmy Stewart, Joe Marks, Cliff Daniels, and Joe Kiernan. North, Crawford, and Brago doubled as mechanics. Brago recalls that much of the maintenance was done in the field under difficult conditions, yet very little "down time" occurred.

All of these aircraft were equipped with homemade tank/ hoppers and sported booms of high grade material and manufacture. Wind-driven pumps were also used, a departure from the whirling wire brushes which were used to produce a vapor-spray.

Faulkner Air Service ceased to exist about 1938. But Archie Wilson continued to operate and was apparently somewhat "adopted" by Seabrook Farms. Brago was taken into Wilson's firm as a partner, and soon a sizable fleet of Stearmans was acquired. ➤

TOP TO BOTTOM Stearman lineup about 1959 of Downstown Aero Service, Vineland, New Jersey. Famous Stearman C38 owned by WilsonFaulkner Air Service, Vineland, New Jersey, 1935.

Newly developed pesticides were introduced after World War II, replacing the inferior fungicides, pyretherins, and arsenicals used previously. These new products helped the New Jersey region, serviced by the Wilson firm, become a true world leader in vegetable production, a position it still holds. Wilson Air Service eventually disbanded about 1968. During its existence, it had a tremendous impact on the agricultural flying industry. It spawned many other firms that have set high standards for efficiency and safety along the Eastern Seaboard. One of the most influential of such firms is Downstown Aero Crop Service. It continues to operate from Downstown Airport at Vineland under the direction and ownership of Dick Nixholm and Pete Cugino. This firm was actually organized by Cugino, a local pilot/mechanic, after World War II as a fixed-base and B 36 | agairupdate.com

training operation. But the purchase of a J-3 Cub with dust hopper put it into the application business on a very small scale. This remained the case until after 1951, when Dick Nixholm purchased a partnership interest. Nixholm and Cugino then embarked on a promotional campaign that skyrocketed Downstown Aero Crop Service into a major enterprise in New Jersey farm circles. Nixholm handled grower contracts, field inspections, and air operations. Cugino took over maintenance, safety, and chemical mixing and loading. The Campbell Soup Company tomato crops in the region and Irish potatoes provided much work for their aircraft, as did other vegetables and gladiolas. Among the organization's first pilots were Bill Mulholland, Nixholm, and Fred Frederici, Cugino's early partner who sold his share of the business to Nixholm.

NTSB REPORTS Accident Synopses

NTSB Identification: CEN21LA296 Date: June 28, 2021 Location: Hoxie, Arkansas Aircraft: GRUMMAN ACFT ENG CORSCHWEIZER G-164B Injuries: None The pilot stated that, after he departed for the last load of the day on an aerial application flight, he realized he was low on fuel but decided to continue with the flight. Before the load was completely dispersed, the airplane ran out of fuel and the engine lost all power. During the forced landing in a flooded rice field, the airplane flipped over, resulting in substantial damage to the forward right lift strut. The pilot stated that there were no mechanical anomalies with the airplane that would have precluded normal operations. Probable Cause and Findings — The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s failure to ensure an adequate fuel supply for the intended flight.

NTSB Identification: CEN21LA452 Date: July 20, 2021 Location: Mineral Point, WI Aircraft: ROBINSON HELICOPTER R44 Injuries: None The pilot of the helicopter was conducting agricultural application when he noticed the oil pressure light flickering just before

B 38 | agairupdate.com

making the 180o turn for his next run, and he turned toward a cornfield and made a precautionary landing. The pilot reported that the landing was soft, but the spray boom broke during landing. Two witnesses reported that the helicopter was maneuvering at low altitude and struck a wire before landing in the cornfield. They both reported that the pilot got out and examined the helicopter, got back in, took off, and departed the area. Photographs taken by a Federal Aviation Administration inspector showed that the helicopter sustained substantial damage to the main rotor blades. The pilot reported that he did not feel the impact of the rotor blades with the wire. Probable Cause and Findings — The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s failure to see and avoid a wire during an aerial application flight, resulting in a collision with the wire.

Accident Number: CEN21LA362 Date: August 6, 2021 Location: Topeka, Kansas Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-502B Injuries: None The commercial pilot reported that before the aerial application flight, he added Jet A fuel to both wing tanks for a total of 150 gallons of fuel onboard. While flying low-level over a field on the third load, the pilot noticed a change in engine power. He maneuvered the airplane

out of the field and the engine steadily lost power. The pilot tried to advance the power forward with no change and the airspeed and altitude decreased. The pilot performed a forced landing to a bean field. During the landing, the airplane bounced, slid across a road, and then came to rest upright. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage and the right wing. The property owner of the bean field reported that he helped the pilot add about 9 gallons of red die automotive diesel fuel to the left fuel tank and about 5 gallons of the fuel to the right fuel tank after the accident. The pilot reported that the low fuel warning light illuminated about five minutes before the partial loss of engine power, yet the pilot continued with the low-level aerial application maneuvers. When the low fuel warning light illuminates, the airplane flight manual states to, “fly straight and level and monitor fuel gauges” and “land as soon as practical.” The operator reported that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airframe and engine that would have precluded normal operation. Probable Cause and Findings — The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s decision to continue low-level aerial application flight maneuvers after the low fuel warning light illuminated, which resulted in a partial loss of engine power due to fuel exhaustion.

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for all Pratt & Whitney Canada Corp. (P&WC) PT6A-34, -34B, -34AG, -114, and -114A model turboprop engines. This AD was prompted by several reports of low-time fractures of compressor turbine (CT) blades resulting in loss of power or in-flight shutdown (IFSD) of the engine. This AD requires replacement of certain CT vanes. This AD also requires removal from service of certain CT blades when these blades have been operated with certain CT vanes. The FAA is issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products. DATES: This AD is effective May 27, 2022. The FAA issued a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) to amend 14 CFR part 39 by adding an AD that would apply to all P&WC PT6A-34, -34B, -34AG, -114, and -114A model turboprop engines. The NPRM published in the Federal Register on August 17, 2020 (85 FR 49981). The NPRM was prompted by several reports of low-time fractures of CT blades resulting in loss of power or IFSD of the engine. In the NPRM, the FAA proposed to require replacement of certain CT vanes. The NPRM also proposed to require the removal from service of certain CT blades when these blades have been operated with certain CT vanes. The FAA is issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products.

There have been several reported events of low time CT blade fractures resulting in power loss/In-flight shutdown (IFSD) on post P&WC Service Bulletin (SB) 1669 configured PT6A-114 engines, featuring new CMSX-6 CT blades. In addition, relatively low time failures of Non-P&WC CT blades have also been reported on PT6A-34 and -114 series engines. In service data shows that these low time failures were reported on engines that had CT vanes installed that were repaired in accordance with repair specification number STI 72-50-254 held by Southwest Turbine Inc. (STI). Most of the affected engines are installed on single-engine powered aeroplanes and some events have resulted in the loss of the aeroplane and fatalities. Dimensional checks and operational testing of the subject STI repaired CT vane removed from an incident engine, revealed that it did not conform to the engine manufacturer's CT vane type design criteria. The noted variations and features in the STI repaired CT vane can cause airflow distortion and subsequent aerofoil excitation of the CT blades resulting in High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) failure of the CT blades. Test data indicates that the stress levels induced in CT blades by the adverse effect of subject airflow distortion exceeds the design requirements for CMSX-6 CT blades.

The FAA received comments from 13 commenters. The commenters were Southwest Turbine Inc. (STI), an individual commenter, and 11 anonymous commenters. The following presents the comments received on the NPRM and the FAA's response to each comment. 001, repaired in accordance with STI 72-50-254.

Request To Require Installation of Dampers/Dampeners

The FAA estimates that this AD affects 907 engines installed on airplanes of U.S. registry.

STI, an individual commenter, and two anonymous commenters suggested that the FAA require operators install under platform seals (dampers or dampeners) introduced by P&WC SB PT6A-72-1769, dated December 21, 2015. One commenter reasoned that of the 20 CMSX-6 CT blade fatigue failures that have occurred, none had occurred when dampeners were installed. Based on a study and testing by P&WC, the commenter determined that the dampeners appeared to have solved the ongoing problem of P&WC CMSX-6 CT blade failures, regardless of which CT vane was installed. The commenter suggested that the FAA withdraw the NPRM and replace it with an AD requiring the installation of the dampeners. An anonymous commenter and an individual commenter referred to P&WC documentation in which P&WC indicated that failures of P&WC CMSX-6 CT blades in normal operation were caused by vibratory stress, and the previous generation of CT blades did not exhibit this problem. To reduce these vibratory

stresses, P&WC introduced dampers. The two commenters suggested requiring dampers and CT vane clocking to reduce vibratory stresses. The FAA disagrees with the suggestion to require operators to install under platform seals to address the unsafe condition. Although data suggest dampeners and clocking reduce vibratory stresses, dampeners and clocking do not eliminate the unsafe condition caused by the installation ofThe FAA reviewed the relevant data, considered any comments received, and determined that air safety requires adopting this AD as proposed. Accordingly, the FAA is issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products. Except for minor editorial changes, and any other changes described previously, this AD is adopted as proposed in the NPRM. None of the changes will increase the economic burden on any operator.

Related Service Information The FAA reviewed Southwest Turbine Repair, Inc., STI 72-50-254, Revision 08, dated April 14, 2019. This service information describes procedures for repair of the compressor turbine vane ring assembly.

Costs of Compliance The FAA estimates that this AD affects 907 engines installed on airplanes of U.S. registry. The FAA estimates that 63 engines will need to replace the CT vanes and CT blades. The FAA estimates the following costs to comply with this AD:

Seat Wanted Ag Pilot seeking work with a reputable operation. 1226 hours TT, 779 Ag, 85 hours Turbine. A team player, with a background in agriculture, as a ground applicator. Also, an A&P mechanic with Ag aircraft experience. Resume available. Please Email: AgFlyer41@gmail.com Looking for an opportunity to move into a seat. I have good experience loading, having worked for a reputable operator in Southern Idaho for 10 months. Growing up on a ranch and working as a herdsman/cowboy as a working career, I understand long hours, little sleep, and hard work. I have my CDL with experience hauling cattle, flatbed, tanker, dump trucks with pups, and utilizing it with the spray operation. I can operate machinery efficiently, boom trucks, auger trucks, forklifts, telehandlers, etc. I can be trusted to run a load pad by myself and know the importance of checking chemical labels, amount of chemical, water source, fuel, etc. I have experience in dry and liquid work, am efficient in switching from dry to liquid and vice versa. We did a lot of government work and know what it takes to take the “show on the road” whether it be for dry or liquid, and making due loading off of remote strips. I can weld, have mechanical aptitude (would love to get my A&P), and learn quickly. The gentleman I worked for is very knowledgeable in the industry and passes that well to his employees, but I also know that there is a lot more for me to learn, and am eager to do so. I have my Single Engine Commercial Certificate with an instrument rating. I am sitting at 500+ hours with 150+ of that being tailwheel. I currently own a Piper Pacer and am building time quickly. If you have any questions or interest, please reach out to me at 406-930-0800. A lot of time I don’t have service so please leave a voicemail and or a text and I will be sure to get back to you.
