AgAir Update, a multiple-award winning publication, is published in three languages and distributed world-wide. AgAir Update is a proud member of:

My previous comments probably don't hold much water for those reading this that are relatively young, maybe less than 50 years old. Just know that one day you will be faced with the decision to continue flying or not. When you stop collecting those big paychecks, you best be financially prepared. Planning today will most certainly have an impact on tomorrow. Trust me, I know, I am there!

FROM THE COCKPIT Bill Lavender bill@agairupdate.com

It has been over 20 years since I had a spray season where I stopped for a few months during the winter. Even so, I still get the same feeling in the cool mornings when I had cotton to defoliate. Don't feel sorry for me for giving up one of the greatest jobs on the planet. I still was able to carry on the ag-pilot role for 27 years. I think now that I am giving away my age, except I started ag-flying at a very young age.

The first instinct when the prop makes its last revolution of the season is to rest, take a break, not work on the aircraft. However, maintenance has to be done at some point. Putting it off only makes it more difficult. How will you spend your winter off-season? Will your time waste away with you waking one early spring morning realizing all that needs to be done immediately?

With this change in weather usually came a breeze that affected aircraft performance but was offset by the cool temperature and low humidity of the day. It was undoubtedly an excellent time to be flying an ag-plane.

Tomorrow?

A 6 | agairupdate.com INTERNATIONAL

Until next month, Keep Turning...

This time of year was always my favorite. The spraying season was coming to a close, and whatever acres had been flown pretty much defined the season, good or bad.

I realize for many of you, those in the southern regions of the US and those south of the Equator, the ending of the season can be practically non-existent. You may be fortunate enough for a slow down at certain times of the year, but hardly ever a complete stop for months. Actually, it is becoming that way for more and more operators not in the snowbound country. I suppose that is a good thing, as every acre counts for something.

In Georgia, there has been a hint of fall in the air this past week. One morning it was 59°F and the next 64°F. Although the temperature climbed to over 85°F by afternoon, it was still a relief from the 95°F days of summer with almost unbearable humidity.

There comes a time when all of us have to hang up our helmets. Some do so reluctantly, while others welcome the change. It is those that deny the need that are in peril. Airline pilots retire at 65 for good reasons. At 70, your reaction time is assuredly off. You are relying on experience instead. The end of life is not that far away once you cross the 70 mark. Maybe you should slow down to smell the roses instead of glancing at them as you pass by.

Heinen Brothers Agra Services Always Looking Ahead -

by Graham Lavender

In 1993, fresh out of A&P School, Scott Heinen knew immediately that he would be around ag planes. He was initially employed by Hetrik Aviation in Topeka, KS, as an A&P but had an opportunity to migrate to Ellenwood, KS, to work as a loader and potential pilot. He showed up, and instead of learning which chemical went in which tank or how much fuel to put in for the next load, he was placed in the cockpit of a Cessna 188. “The only thing that saved me on that initial checkout was the wind kept blowing right down the runway!” comments Scott. ➤

Scott and Glenn Heinen’s roots are deep in Kansas agriculture. Raised on a 700-acre farm, there was no doubt that the brothers would make it their life’s mission to continue in the field they grew up in. Scott and Glenn, along with their sister, all graduated from Kansas State University, Scott with an Aviation Sciences degree and Glenn with a degree in Agronomy. Little did both know that these decisions, having been made at the very start of their professional careers, would lay the foundation for an expansive and diverse agricultural and aviation business in the future.

A 12 | agairupdate.com INTERNATIONAL

At 23 years old, Scott finished the first season with Ellenwood Flying Service, then came back home and asked his dad to co-sign on an ag plane so Scott could start his own business. Scott reflects on the first year “It was a leap of faith for both my dad and me. After studying the numbers repeatedly, I knew I needed 6,000 acres to break even. I was a nervous wreck that first year out on my own. So, I put some ads in the paper and went to work.” That leap of faith paid off, as Scott was overloaded with pasture and wheat work the first year. He needed the 6,000 acres but ended up with over 21,000. Those 21,000 acres were covered with the Cessna, Scott doing all the flying and his brother, Glenn, loading the airplane.

Glenn Heinen

The following season those acres jumped to over 30,000. Scott and Glenn had to call in reinforcements. Not only were the acres piling up, but Glenn was heading to college to pursue his degree in Agronomy.

As the business grew, the brothers upgraded from the Cessna to an AgCat, then an AT-301 and Pawnee by the end of 2001. In 2004, Heinen Brothers added

two AT-401s and became a dealer for Pioneer Seed. This propelled the business into input sales.

The fungicide phenomenon hit the business in 2005/2006, and the aircraft additions began for the company. Two AT402s with PT6A-15s were purchased from Southeastern Aircraft Sales. Over the next six years, over eight AT-502bs were added to the fleet. In 2014, two new AT-802s were purchased from Farm Air. The business was thriving.

In 1998, Scott and Glenn had the foresight to expand beyond just aerial application - they wanted to be the onestop shop for the grower. They purchased a Rogator and knew it was time to start selling product. Scott also saw an opportunity to mentor Glenn in spraying and taught him the craft while Glenn was in college.

In 2001, Glenn graduated from KSU, and the brothers rebranded the business to what it is today, Heinen Brothers Agra Services.

Heinen Brothers’ first acquisition was Bonne Idee in 2013. Since then, the business has

Today, the expansive Heinen Brothers Agra Services have 21 Air Tractors, from the AT-402 to the AT-802, three helicopters (an AS350B3, R44 Raven II, and MD500D), two Piper Braves, a Kodiak,

acquired operations from Idaho to Oklahoma to Arizona. In 2020, Heinen Brothers purchased all of the Wilbur-Ellis operations in Kansas except one. “We want to make it so easy that an operator cannot not do business with us,” comments Scott.

It holds mystery, the forbidden fruit, an island nation, Cuba. Since 1962 when the U.S. government declared any economic relations by its citizens with Cuba to be considered “trading with the enemy”, Americans have been prohibited from free trade with Cuba; forty years of an embargo.

AAU Hosted in Cuba

However, there are loopholes within the law that permit “journalist” to enter the country without any specific documentation, other than you must be able to prove beyond a doubt you are truly in the journalism business. Writing a newsletter, specifically, doesn’t count.

My first visit to Cuba was in 1997 (see AAU February 1998). I challenged this law, presenting my business card and a copy of AgAir Update to Customs officials. It was a testy event, but I prevailed and was allowed back into the United States without penalty. However, for this last trip, I didn’t bother to declare my itinerary, conveniently omitting my stop in Cuba. In consideration of the facts, I would not recommend traveling in Cuba illegally. Too many things can go wrong, that would cause you untold grief. In my case, I always had the option to declare my visit after the fact. If I’d found myself in a dilemma, I would have simply opted my journalist (I hate that title) status. Besides, I was a guest of Cuba.

Upon arriving in Camaguey, central Cuba, I knew beforehand ENSA had purchased two Canadian manufactured Ag-Nav GPS systems and the company had an aviation school that also taught ag-pilots to fly. At this school was reported to be two An-2 simulators. This trip promised to be very interesting. ➤

For both of my trips to Cuba, ENSA, the Empresa Nacional de Servicio Aéreos, was my host. This is the agricultural aviation division. ENSA not only operates the agricultural division of aviation in Cuba, but is also responsible for mosquito control, air patrol and fire fighting, as well as cargo, mail and passenger transport. The two most popular aircraft within ENSA’s operations are the M18 Dromader and the An-2 Antonov. The An-2 doubles its duties as a sprayer and as an air taxi, depending on its certification.

During my first 1997 trip to Cuba, I was met at Cuban Customs by ENSA’s lawyer and had his escort throughout the daylight hours. My visit consisted of interviewing Cuban ag pilots at Punta Operativo close to Havana, and touring ENSA’s Havana office. This last trip was to again visit with ENSA, but not in Havana, and also to see the changes made by ENSA in the last five years.

After clearing Customs, we were whisked off to the other side of the Camaguey airport, where the ENSA office is located. Here we talked in general about ag aviation worldwide, I presented them with the latest copies of AgAir Update Latinoamérica and we made plans for the next day. Then, I was treated to a very nice lunch, with a cordial Cuban rum toast, of which I was presented the remainder of the bottle (Habana Club). It was interesting to note the Camaguey airport was built by Americans during World War II. ENSA uses the remainder of the American installation for its offices and hangar. However, the Camaguey International airport boasts an all-new facility of Canadian architect. It was very nice, exceptional. But, when you consider the Cubans charged us $420 USD to

During the first day’s inter- view, I was informed about the Camaguey operation. This part of ENSA has ten pilots with eight M-18s and one An-2 used for spraying, transportation and newspaper drops. The Camaguey division also has one agronomist and three engineers with ten technicians. Crops are a mixture of citrus, rice, cane, bananas and mango, as well as mosquito applications and fire fighting missions. Spraying operations are conducted all year long, with May, June and July are traditionally the peak months and February, March and April the primary months for fire fighting. In September, October, November and Decem- ber cane ripeners and herbi-cides are applied to the cane. The primary crop in Cuba is rice with two harvest a year. All the seeding is by aircraft, using both dry and pre-germi- nated rice seed, depending on the weather conditions. More than 25,000 hectares are treated in the first three months of the year by the Camaguey opera-tion. There are three divisions of ENSA, located in the west, central and east regions of the island. The company operates 87 aircraft, of which 25 are M- 18s and 62 are An-2s. Presently, ENSA has ordered and received three GPS units from Ag-Nav. The units are being used on a trial basis, with plans to outfit the fleet, including their training aircraft located at Sancti Spiritus. I was promised to be driven the next day to tour the Cuban ag aviation school, also located at Sancti Spiritus, a three-hour drive toward Havana. ➤

Che Guevara is a martyr of the Cuban revolution, where he and Castro overthrew the Batista government. His likeness is found throughout Cuba. (L-R) Nigel, Bill and Dudley.

Through ENSA, AgAir Update has eight subscribers. Thus, the company was familiar with myself as editor. This became evident when my traveling companions, Dudley Beek and his son Nigel, and myself were met after passing through a rigorous inspection by Cuban Customs. ENSA had dispatched from its Havana office, a six-hour drive, three of its key managers to include the second-in-command, Captain Hermes Hernández, as well as the head of its Camaguey operation. Dudley, well-versed in Cuban relations, indicated to me this was quite an honor. I know they must have had the Biblical patience of Job, since they had to wait over two hours in the hot Cuban sun for us to clear Customs. But, they were cordial, and expressed a sincere openness to accommodate me.

Although Cuba is a communist country, I found the individuals at the Sancti Spiritus school were as enterprising as a similar ag aviation school would be in America. The school last year completed ISO 9001 certification. I was told that future plans are to offer the school to pilots from elsewhere in the world, who desire to become an ag pilot. There was no indication of the tuition cost, or even when this training would be offered. I do believe the student would be adequately trained, however the living and flying conditions surely would be different. My assumption is primary training would be in the An-2, advancing to flying the M-18. I saw no other aircraft.

As ag aviation continues to develop in Cuba, AgAir Update will keep you posted. The Cuban people are some of the nicest people I have met; not too unlike any other ag aviation community. They live within a very different political situation than most ag pilots. But, they survive very well, and have many of the same individual traits of any other ag pilot. As GPS becomes more entrenched in Cuban ag aviation operations, and innovative ideas from other parts of the world are incorporated, with further progression of their ag aviation school, AgAir Update will most assuredly return for another report.

take safety very seriously. From the looks of the way they operate, with recurrent training and semi-annual check rides, it is obvious safety is paramount. One must remember, in Cuba, production and efficiency are important, but not so important that individuals feel the need to jeopardize themselves. The stress of flying is different for them than what is considered typical in the rest of the world. I asked about the accident/fatality rate, however, somehow the reply got lost in the translation. My speculation is the rates would be very low. I believe their training is up to par with any where in the world. The condition of their aircraft may be another issue. The quality of their workmanship is equal to or better than elsewhere, however, lack of spare parts is a problem.

“We and Air Tractor combined efforts to help Meyer at a time when he really needed his airplane back in service as soon as possible,” said Air Tractor dealer Garrett Frost of Frost Flying. “The Midwestern corn fungicide season is compressed into just a few short weeks of long days of flying. Income is lost every day that ag plane isn’t working,” he added.

On a hot day in June, Joel Meyer’s 2009 Air Tractor AT602 sustained serious damage to its wing and fuselage. It could well have been a costly setback leading up to his busy season. But a supportive Air Tractor dealer teamed with Air Tractor in Olney, Texas to quickly return the plane back to the air and earning money again.

Meyer, who has operated Meyer Agri-Air, Inc. for 30 years, loaned one of his eight Air Tractor airplanes to work at a friend’s business in eastern Arkansas. On June 21, Meyer said the pilot of the AT-602 had fueled up and took off from a remote strip with a full load. The pilot reported, “it seemed the airplane was lifting off but then it started settling back down again.” The landing gear impacted a berm on the dirt strip, folding left landing gear up and back into the wing and fuselage. Still airborne, the pilot dumped the load and continued gaining altitude. At some point, the left landing gear parted company from the airplane. The plane was flying miserably but was controllable. The pilot nursed it a few miles to land at Newport Municipal Airport, Arkansas. ➤ Tractor Teamwork Delivers…

“The pilot landed her on one main wheel and the tail wheel until the airspeed came down enough, and then he laid it down on its wing,” Meyer said. “He saved the engine and saved the prop.”

“Any impact sufficient to knock off a landing gear means there’s likely significant airframe damage, too.” observed Garrett Frost. “And it takes special individuals to do those crucial repairs in a timely manner.”

Meanwhile, in Arkansas, damaged airframe tubing and external skin panels were repaired and repainted.

By Friday, June 30, wing repairs for the AT-602 were completed at Air Tractor. The wing was transported back to Frost Flying and re-attached to the repaired fuselage. ➤

The spreader underneath kept the fuselage and left wing mostly above the concrete as the airplane settled down onto the runway.

The extent of the damage quickly became clear after an initial inspection: Damage to the left wing and wing spar, the landing gear, and the fuselage frame. News of the accident travelled through the grapevine, and that’s when Air Tractor’s dealer network sprang into action.

On June 22, the airplane arrived at Frost’s facilities, where the fuselage would be inspected and repaired. The left wing was removed and trucked nine hours to Air Tractor, arriving Sunday night, June 26.

Meyer says it was clear from the start that both Air Tractor factory-dealer team understood what it means to have an airplane on the ground during the busiest time of the season.

Meyer is grateful to everyone who worked on his AT-602. “They really did their best for me,” he said. “They put their professionalism out front, and they delivered. I think that's just really incredible, even after all the years that I've been in this business. It's pretty amazing.”

“They did their best, knowing what time means to any aviation company. I felt that I had exactly the people I wanted working on my airplane to make sure it was done right. And in a very timely fashion.”

The grantees are:

• Oregon State University: Through outreach and educational efforts, this project seeks to slow the spread of herbicide-resistant weeds, preserve the useful life of current herbicides, and increase the adoption of IPM practices. The project will deliver herbicide resistance training through web-based and in-person workshops to Pacific Northwest agricultural professionals.

• University of Florida: This project will create a process for ornamental plant growers to produce and market their products as wildlife friendly based on compatibility with pollinators and other beneficial wildlife. The project will also develop and deliver educational resources, Integrated Pest and Pollinator Management certification programs, and training opportunities for ornamental plant producers in the southeastern U.S.

While traditional pest control involves the routine application of pesticides, IPM focuses on pest prevention and only using pesticides as needed. IPM provides a more effective, environmentally sensitive approach to pest management— especially for historically underserved communities that are disproportionately impacted by unnecessary exposure to pests and pesticides. Furthermore, IPM has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. IPM strategies often use fewer pesticides resulting in less fuel consumption for pesticide application.

Dennis has many fond memories of his 27 years at MidContinent, especially of Dick Reade.

The word “parts” strikes an important note because our parts department has played and continues to play an important role in our company. Heading that department today is Dennis Davis, whose voice is one in which many are familiar.

If you have noticed something special in that voice, that’s because it’s well-trained; it used to boom from radio stations in northeast Arkansas during Dennis’ tenure as a radio DJ in Jonesboro and Corning. Dennis also had stints as a telephone installer, insurance salesman, and truck driver.

The Sum of its Parts - Dennis Davis and MidContinent Aircraft

Dennis first came to Mid-Continent by way of NAPA Auto Parts Store in his small hometown of Piggott, AR.

Dennis joined the parts department as the self-described “low man on the totem pole”. But the newbie was no stranger to the company’s heavy agriculture-centric business.

by Josh Rittenberry, MidContinent Aircraft

“I grew up on a small family farm. I would be out plowing and watching the planes in the distance or listening to Ag Cats fire up at Larry’s Flanigan’s as I hoed the beans. It made me dream of flying.”

As a new hire, Dennis started out taking calls and working with Juan Phillips, double-checking and packing his international shipments. Soon Dennis began to make the rounds at conventions like the National Agricultural Aviation Expo and the Arkansas Aerial Applicators Association convention. After the retirement of Gordon Payne in 2014, Dennis was promoted to parts manager. Today he is in charge of parts sales staff, as well as shipping and warehouse staff.

A phrase that is often attributed to the Greek philosopher Aristotle says that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” In other words, a business as a whole is more valuable than the individual components that drive it. In no place is that quote truer than at Mid-Continent.

B 4 | agairupdate.com UNITED STATES

“When JC Helms, my friend and a salesman at Mid-Continent came into to buy some parts to rebuild an engine he was working on”, Dennis recalls. “He said I really needed to talk to Dick Reade about a job. That was in 1995 and I’m still here.”

Dennis has been married to his wife, Gayla, since 1984. Together they share a daughter and three sons. In addition, they dote on five granddaughters and three grandsons.

“I remember Dick was selling a Turbine Thrush to a customer in Guatemala, and he asked me to tag along, and I was included in the talks. We went to his house for a while and then to dinner. “Onward and upward” was one of his favorite sayings.”

Unscheduled Events, Prop Strike and Sudden Stoppage

Robert Craymer - robertc@covingtonaircraft.com

B 10 | agairupdate.com UNITED STATES

I have written before about unscheduled events (exceedances). This time under the title of unscheduled events, I will look at prop strikes and sudden stoppage. These two events are interconnected in the engine maintenance manuals, although there are some differences once we get into the overhaul manual. Here are a few things from the engine maintenance manual to keep in mind. If

your engine must be removed because of an unscheduled event or circumstance, you may be asked to provide additional information in the form of a completed SIL GEN135. This Pratt & Whitney Canada service information letter (SIL) is used to provide data about the event. Photos of the event may also be requested. If you have a prop strike or sudden stoppage, take pictures of the airplane overall, the

is assembled, the tolerances of the compressor and other components are very tight. Think of the force that the engine was subjected to. That force can shift parts spinning quickly, causing rub and damage.

prop strike or sudden stoppage? A prop strike is a rotating prop hitting an object that causes a speed variation (NO stoppage) and blade damage, OR a stationary prop is hit by a moving object that causes blade damage. On the other hand, a sudden stoppage is when a rotating prop contacts something that causes the prop to stop. Seems simple enough, right?

When the power section has been received in the shop, the work really begins. We shift our focus from the maintenance manual to the overhaul manual. There are procedures in the overhaul manual that tells every engine shop what to disassemble and inspect. There have been some changes to these procedures over the years. ➤

After defining these events, let's now separate the two from one another. We can focus on the prop strike first. Our maintenance journey begins right after you suffer a prop strike. The maintenance manual asks, what was the Ng during the event? We need to distinguish between minor and major types of damage. Did the incident happen below the Flight Idle Ng or while the engine was shut down? Is the blade damage minor per the propeller maintenance manual? If you verify the answer to these questions is "yes," you may not have to pull the engine yet. If your event fits this profile, you might have to run the engine and check the oil filter and chip detector, followed by a monitoring/inspection sequence until you can return the engine to full service. However, if metal is found during the monitoring phase or a vibration begins, you will have to remove the power section for inspection. Therefore, even if your event is minor, you must document and advise your insurance company.

agairupdate.com | B 11 UNITED STATES

Whatpossible.defines

What if you were above flight idle or significant damage was done to the prop blades? Prop strike on a power line? Remove the power section and send it in for repair. Before pulling the power section, you will want to inspect the entire engine closely - looking for cracks, twists or distortions. Pull the starter/generator and look at all the accessory pads on the accessory gearbox. Check the FCU and pump to ensure they didn't receive any damage. These accessories can sustain damage in the event of a hard prop strike. If a wire was hit that wasn't a guide, support or telephone wire, you will want to look for evidence of electrical discharge, including burn marks at the C-flange and the compressor turbine disk. The C-flange is the "split" point for the gas generator and the power section.

propeller and the engine before removal. The more data provided, the better. You want to leave as few questions as

Sudden stoppage of the propeller is a little like the previous inspection. Remove the power section and send it in for repair. Inspect the balance of the engine for damage. One thing added in the maintenance manual is to rotate the compressor. You want to listen for audible scraping, rubbing or interference. We found the compressor to be rubbed on some severe sudden stoppage events. When the engine

One of those changes includes replacing the prop shaft if a sudden stoppage occurs. The most recent change is to perform a heat treatment for the exhaust duct. Most of the internal components in the power section require an overhaul level inspection. This even includes the power turbine disk(s) and blades. There are some automatic replacement items like the before-mentioned prop shaft and the #6 and, if applicable, the #7 bearing. Not going to lie; these changes have led to longer shop turn times on prop strikes and sudden stoppage power sections. Your shop has to do an overhaul level inspection on these components, which takes time.

I sincerely hope no one hits anything with their airplane or prop. If it happens to you, contact your insurance company— document as many details about the incident, including pictures. Determine with your mechanic and engine shop what level of inspection is required based on the information in the engine maintenance manual. If your engine must go in for repair, realize the engine shop is working as hard as possible to get you back in the air as quickly as possible.

the overhaul manual does not apply to your incident? The process now involves a request sent to Pratt & Whitney Canada engineering. They review all the information provided and decide what the engine requires for a return to service. We reference this as a request for evaluation or RFE.

There is one other item that must be mentioned. The first section of the overhaul manual sudden stoppage/propeller strike area lists several scenarios where the overhaul manual work scope doesn't apply. This doesn't just apply to engines under warranty. This is for all engines. Some of these scenarios are: if the event took place on takeoff or landing or if drive train components are sheared. The manual also noted that if the operator fails to give sufficient information about the event, the engine repair must be done as a "worst case." So, what does your shop do if the work scope in

Trust is vital in agriculture and the food supply. If you ever have questions about what’s actually done on larger-scale conventional farms, ask the real people who do it for a living on the large-scale conventional farms! University Extension agents affiliated with animal science and plant breeding programs are also excellent sources of info. Farmers are the experts on farming, but unfortunately, the government and big food corporations are not always leading us to the truth about the food supply. The real truth? Modern agriculture is backed by solid science with a brilliant story to tell, and every day the industry is improving more and more.

Also, want to play a fun game? Go to the Non-GMO Project Verified’s Facebook page, say something good about GMOs, and see how long it takes you to get blocked and banned. Facts and truth are no friend to this label, that point-blank lies to the end consumer. And also, food modifications have been happening for thousands of years… none of our food is “natural,” and it’s all been modified at some point.

Organic. Many people purchase organic foods because they are led to believe they don’t use pesticides, but this couldn’t be further from the truth! They don’t use “synthetic” pesticides, and that’s the keyword here, synthetic. Thousands of OMRI chemicals and crop protection products are approved for organic farming and are just naturally derived. But “natural” means nothing in terms of toxicity, so again it’s a bit of a misleading label. Pesticide use boils down to region, pest pressure, farm size, and more. For example, the big Midwest grain farms may not spray anything on organic, but where I live in Florida, organic fruits and veggies may need to be sprayed weekly. Fresh market produce in a tropical climate has much higher pest pressure and is more susceptible to disease and other issues so that consumers wouldn’t purchase the ugly, misshapen foods. Don’t get me wrong - the original premise behind organic had some solid science and reasons behind it. But the good news is that once that science was discovered (soil health and biology principles, for example), it was adopted by all different types of farmers, both organic and non-organic alike.

Hormone and Steroid-Free Chicken. Did you know there’s actually no such thing as added hormones or steroids in chicken or pork? Nope! They haven’t been used since the

B 16 | agairupdate.com UNITED STATES

1950s. Chickens (and pigs) are larger today just due to basic science! Genetics, breed, better and more comfortable housing, feed efficiencies and more have allowed modern chicken farms to produce bigger, better, more flavorful meats where that rate of gain is solid science. We can feed the masses with much fewer resources than we did decades ago. The next time you see a label on these packages that say “no added hormones or steroids,” read the fine print: it will also say, “*federal law strictly prohibits the use of hormones and steroids.” It’s not even a thing. Just a marketing ploy to try and get more money out of the consumer.

Antibiotic Free. All meat and dairy products are antibiotic free! Although antibiotic use has substantially declined in recent years, antibiotics still may play an essential role in animal health. The good news is that if antibiotics are used, that animal must go through a withdrawal period before it can legally go to market to ensure those medicine residues are no longer in the meat, which means that once again, the food corporations are using meaningless or misleading language to try and sell you something.

During this time, obstacles have proliferated. Wires, poles, towers, wind turbines, etc. America's farmland has become a jungle of steel we must navigate daily. Add in all the things that have entered the cockpit, like GPS systems and blue-toothed telephones, and it gets pretty clear that we've

In military history, for example, you can see how technology outstripped the day's tactics. The American Civil War, and World War 1, are stark examples. Larger, faster, more deadly weapons hit the battlefields while armies were still practicing tactics that were two generations behind. The result was massive casualties. Obscene numbers of killed and wounded because the men giving the orders clung stubbornly to tactics developed by past generations.

One thing that is apparent throughout history is that technology travels fast. New things are developed while people are still accustomed to practicing old ways.

flying larger, faster aircraft. We're hauling loads and covering the kind of ground that our forefathers could only dream of. And we're still doing it the same way as they did.

The same situation applies to our industry. Ag aviation has grown and changed by leaps and bounds. We're

Back then, they were flying ninety miles an hour, hauling a hundred fifty gallons in a machine that weighed a fraction of what our current aircraft weigh. Compare that to flying 140-180 miles an hour in an airplane weighing anywhere from 9000 to 16000 pounds.

A Few Seconds

Self-preservation is infinitely more important than the urgency to get the work done. There have been too many memorial services that will speak to that fact. We simply should not be an industry that -expects- casualties.

Work orders stack up, we get going, "balls to the walls" at first light, and don't stop until the last light. Of course, the job has to get done, and there are not enough pilots and machines to do it in any scheduled way. But we need to be smarter and safer in how we're getting it done. We need not to be willing to trade blood for a few bushels of

We need to consider different methods in how we're plying our trade. Change our tactics and mindset to meet the ever-evolving nature of the work. There's a mentality shift that needs to happen as well as a change in methods. Ag pilots must understand that doing the job as grandpa did might not be the best way. Fly a little higher; take the time to circle the field. Identify the obstacles and hazards -before- you have to get down in there with them. Flying six to ten feet off the deck at 150 mph is no time to discover a set of power lines cutting across the field.

the ag pilots I know, the most successful and the least stressed out are the guys who take their time. They don't get rushed and don't allow anyone to rush them. Their flying is smooth, and they rack up the acres just as well as anyone else. They keep their minds on the job and don't worry about what anyone else thinks. They do the job with an approach to getting good results and keeping the airplane from getting wadded up. Nothing to prove but getting home at the end of the day. ➤

Instilled in us is a do-or-die mentality. The first order of business is, "Roll those acres up. They don't call it a money handle for nothing."

Ofcorn.all

We haven't adapted our methods to compensate for the complexity of today's high-speed, technological work environment. The workload and risks of the modern-day ag pilot have increased dramatically.

Workload or not, we need to slow down. We need to take the time to stay alive. We need to give ourselves room to live.

If we stop and think about how we're doing as an industry, we've got to realize something is not working right. There's something that needs to change.

been facing an ever-growing mission requirement while still using the same tactics of past generations.

Make your turns smooth and coordinated. If you have to widen them out, then do it. Take your time. Fly in a manner that doesn't increase the risks you're already taking.

INTEGRITY

A pilot might pull his turns around on the edge of a stall for years. He gets away with it every time. Until

A while back, there was a math problem circulating the industry about how many seconds a guy could shave off in his work and how many minutes and gallons of fuel that would all add up to at the end of the day. It was basically seeing how narrower we could make the margins and get away with it. It turns out it isn't much. One wrecked airplane far exceeds any cost savings. Don't worry about being quick. Worry about not making yourself dead.

will break from flight suddenly, violently, and with zero room to recover. You're playing Russian Roulette. Don't do it. Get that BS out of your head and out of your flying.

he doesn't. BAM! You're dead in a very bad way. And it happens just that fast.

With the modern aircraft we fly, there's no need to rush a turn. You're covering the ground at a high rate of speed. Take a few extra seconds in your turn. Keep the airplane solidly in the air, and don't "nibble at the stall," as some pilots say they do. That's stupid. Downright stupid. If you're "nibbling," you're half a heartbeat away from taking a big Thesebite.airplanes

You are mistaken if you think it can't or won't happen to you. It can, and it will. If you could ask all the fellow pilots we've buried, they'd likely tell you they thought the same.

Leave your stall warning circuit breaker in! It performs a valuable job, telling you the airflow condition over your wings. It's an audible tap on the shoulder telling you you'd better back off a bit. Listen to it.

Fly well and STAY SAFE!

Easing a little pressure off the stick and taking just a few more seconds could very well make the difference between making your wife a widow or not. That's all there is to it. A couple of pounds of pressure and a few seconds. The difference between life and death.

everything we do and how well we do it is directly related to how well we care for ourselves.

How Dry am I? Human Factors in Ag Flying

In-flight food and beverage service for ag pilots differs a bit from other commercial operators. It is a self-serve affair and usually consists of the contents of a lunch pail and thermos of coffee versus a choice of steak fillet or trout almandine for the flight crew up front. But given the limitations of singleseat aircraft operation, while the elegance of meal delivery is questionable, the nutrition should be a high standard.

Our bodies are similar in a way to the aircraft we fly, both requiring professional care and servicing at regular intervals. But sometimes, when the action gets hot and heavy, we tend to forget the critical importance of nutrition, hydration, sleep, and other important safety-related factors. In short,

You Are What You Eat

This proverbial saying implies that to be fit and healthy; you need to eat good food. We need to watch both the quantity and quality of food and liquids we take in, as well as ensure that both are consumed on a regular basis. There is also the issue of medications, either prescribed or over the counter, where any side effects that may affect our ability to fly safely should be well known. Last but not least are the use of alcohol and/or recreational drugs, which can have severe consequences if not handled safely. ➤

How Dry I Am

How do you know if you are drinking enough? You are probably doing fine if you rarely feel thirsty, and when you need a bathroom break, your urine is colorless or light yellow. It's a good idea to drink a glass of water with each meal and between meals, and of course whenever you feel thirsty.

In addition to eating nutritiously, you also require sufficient water to function efficiently. Lack of water can lead to dehydration — a condition when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired.

Environmental Stressors

It is quite amazing that the human body can withstand a wide variety of external stressors such as noise, temperature, and vibration, and in the ag flying business, there are a lot of them. When I shifted to radial engines from horizontally opposed piston engines, I felt noticeably more fatigued at the end of the day because of the significant increase in vibration and noise levels.

The Mayo Clinic guidelines are that most healthy people can stay hydrated by drinking water and other fluids whenever they feel thirsty. You also don't need to rely on water alone as many fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon and spinach, are almost 100% water by weight. In addition, beverages such as milk, juice, and herbal teas are composed primarily of water. Even caffeinated drinks — such as coffee and soda — can contribute to your daily water intake.

For me, this is an example of having sufficient knowledge to make reasonable choices. Instead of ingesting a lot of refined sugar via chocolate bars, donuts and soft drinks that can cause low blood sugar levels resulting in irritability, weakness, and difficulty in concentrating - not something you want to happen while zipping down a field at spray height - add some fruit or vegetables to the menu as a substitute. If you must eat on the run, choose a granola bar instead of getting a 'sugar fix' from foods high in sugar.

In short, this means that balanced meals taken regularly throughout the day will allow your body and brain to function optimally.

We are taught in school that a properly balanced diet requires that we eat items from each of the main food groups, usually depicted in the form of a pyramid where what and how many servings we should eat are suggested. All is fine and good, but sticking to all the recommendations can get challenging without a full-time nutritionist onboard.

Awareness is the Golden Key

In addition to the demanding nature of ag flying that is very unforgiving of lapses in performance, ag pilots are subject to various issues that, if not kept in check, can make for a bad day at the office. A key ingredient in keeping things running smoothly and safely is always being aware of how you feel physically and mentally. If you don't feel up to par, don't fly. Walk away, get some rest, and then have another look at the trip. The field will surely be there when you get back.

It is not surprising when you look at industrial accident reports that alcohol is often cited as a contributing factor. The same is true when you look at aviation accidents and incident reports where there have been fatalities. The problem with using alcohol or any recreational drug is not only do they have immediate effects on performance but also that the effects remain after consumption no matter what you do. No amount of coffee, breathing pure oxygen, or exercise will change this fact.

Noise in and around aircraft, in general, is always an issue, but in ag flying, it is a matter which needs to be actively addressed. Fatigue and stress are the immediate results of noise in the short term, whether from prop, engine or fuselage wind noise. In the long run, excessive noise can result in permanent hearing loss. Wearing a properly fitted helmet and

Alcohol and Accidents

Vibration

A bit of planning can be of great help in keeping everything in balance. Make a list of 'good foods' before you go to the grocery store so you can make good choices in planning meals. And always keep a good supply of water on hand to keep the body well hydrated.

earplugs can considerably reduce noise intensity, and noisecanceling helmet headsets result in remarkably low sound levels. I remember the first time I used an ANC (active noise cancellation) headset; it was so quiet that I kept checking the engine instruments repeatedly to ensure all was well!

I once heard the quip that ag airplanes are simply tractors with wings, focusing on performance while making for spartan accommodations in the cockpit. The nature of the business is that ag aircraft operations can often come with a lot of vibration from both engine and aerodynamic considerations, resulting in fatigue and stress. There is not much you can do about it except be aware of its possible effects on your body and your concentration level.

Plan What You Do, Do What You Plan

The Effects of Noise

He circled the field a couple times. Leaning the Stinson over to peer at the ground. He searched out the shadow of the runway and decided it would be safe enough to land. The old bird bounced on touch down. The ground was understandably rough. The airplane rattled and shook on roll out. Carefully, he was able to taxi to where the ramp was. A crumbling concrete pad with large broken pieces protruding in different directions.

The runway was barely discernible. Years of neglect and overgrowth had slowly transformed the old strip into not much more than a fallow pasture. A few boney old cows

reclined under the shade of the trees that stood along the fence line. The windsock was nothing but faded tatters hanging on a rusty metal ring. The pole was bent, leaning toward the downwind side. It squeaked now and then. A feeble old sound, like a sad, dying whimper. It was a lonely old place that once was alive with the roar of radial engines and the shouts of men getting the day’s work done.

Flying Back

Jack was an old man. He’d known the C.C. Duster’s strip when he was a kid. It was a busy place back then. In overalls and bare feet, he would ride his bicycle down the dirt roads to watch the airplanes come and go. He dreamed of piloting one himself someday. Now, he knew his own flying days were waning. Though he never sprayed an acre, he’d flown thousands of hours, shuttling people and cargo to places around the world. This flight however, the destination was found in memories instead of an aeronautical chart. His only passengers were the ghosts of those long gone. The dream of being a crop duster pilot resonated within his memories, just as if he were still twelve years old.

The propeller rotated to a stop. Silence, save for the ticking of the cooling exhaust and a faint plea from the Jackwindsock.unbuckled and climbed from the cockpit. His feet touched ground that had forgotten what human steps felt Thelike.

Ground crawling critters scampered away when Jack dragged the door open. Birds flew like a shotgun blast from the rafters. Dust and gloom was heavy within. ➤

A cold chill ran up Jack’s spine, but it only lasted a moment. He stood and watched Clyde Crenshaw work at his bench. His hands moved as deliberately as he remembered. The years were peeled away like the pages of a book and Jack, the airline pilot, stood right there in an old crop duster hangar where he was first introduced to the fragrance of oil, gasoline, butyrate dope and sweat.

Decades of flying some of the most sophisticated aircraft in the world started and culminated in this very same place. An old crop duster hangar in the middle of nowhere and a man that would sometimes pay him a dime to do a chore. He took it all in again, just as if he were still twelve years old.

As he turned to go, Clyde lit up a Lucky Strike, “You gonna put those plugs back in Jackie Boy?”

He’d flown thousands of hours, shuttling people and cargo to places around the world.

Fatigue impairs the brain’s executive functions including attention, multitasking, and decision-making, sometimes dramatically. This can result in confusion, task

As I write this article, I am catching up from AirVenture. This wonderful experience tends to be very busy so fatigue is very much on my mind and I suspect that it is for many of you. In general, we think of fatigue as acute (recent sleep deficit), chronic (multiple days of inadequate sleep), or circadian (related to time of day and normal physiological lows). In commercial aviation, there are specific safeguards to limit the duty day

depending on reporting time and number of legs. These regulatory restrictions do not apply to operations under 14 CFR part 91, but our physiological limitations do. The number of mishaps attributed to fatigue, some fatal, clearly demonstrates this.

Going Long - The Physicological Effects of Fatigue

A pre-flight and ongoing self-assessment of your fitness is critical. IMSAFE is a good tool. Pressing ahead if you feel tired is high risk, especially at night. Take a nap, reschedule the flight, or break up your trip with an overnight stay. Stay hydrated even if it requires an en route stop. For longer flights, plan shorter legs. It helps keep a safe fuel reserve, a comfortable bladder, and reduces the risk of a blood clot. (By the way, coffee is not the solution: it does not replace adequate rest). It is better to arrive safely at your destination late than not at all.

we are more likely to dedicate time specifically to flying, whether local or cross-country. Both tend to focus on meeting explicit regulatory requirements (hours and distance). This makes sense in flight training; the goal is to learn essential aviation skills as efficiently as possible. But this approach might not prepare you for your first actual long-range solo or sole pilot flight without someone reviewing your planning. Tack on fatigue and you increase the risk of an adverse outcome.

What Are We Doing?

Here are a few potential pitfalls. The risk of fatigue should be obvious when you experience inadequate sleep, trans-meridian travel (jet-lag), recent illness, hectic work week, etc., but it’s unwise to underestimate human ability at self-deception. Even if you had enough time for sleep, it might not have been restorative. Stress, alcohol (even within legal minimums), some medications, or a poor sleeping environment, can lead to unexpected (and unrecognized) fatigue. Even the flight can contribute: preparations, duration of flight at altitude, weather, or unfamiliarity with the course are all aggravating factors. Also dehydration can mimic and magnify the effects of fatigue.

What Can You Do?

Leave your insurance worries on the ground.

Aerospace medicine conducts ongoing research into fatigue management and countermeasures. My staff are working with counterparts at NASA and NTSB to continue steady improvements in flight safety. Robust programs for commercial aviation can be applicable to general aviation, even for single pilot operations (see below). For over a decade, general aviation has enjoyed a steady decrease in the mishap rate. Please help keep this trend going downward.

Jesus said, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting Life” (John 3:16). There’s nothing a person can do to earn God’s righteousness; our own righteousness will never satisfy God’s holy requirements (Romans 3:23-24). Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness with God (Genesis 15:6, Galatians 3:6). Paul wrote, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God… For He made Him (Jesus Christ) who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (Ephesians 2:8, 2 Corinthians 5:21). Paul understood that his righteousness with God came through his faith in Jesus Christ as His Lord and Savior (Philippians 3:8-10).

The Power Of Prayer In Our Life

B 34 | agairupdate.com UNITED STATES

“Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. (James 5:17). Elijah got thirsty and hungry (1 Kings 17:11). Elijah was afraid (1 Kings 19:3), and Elijah got tired (1 Kings 19:4). Elijah prayed earnestly, the Greeks actually says, “He prayed with prayer” which is to say, “He really prayed, or he prayed with intensity.” Elijah was a man just like we are; he had his strong and weak points. In response to Elijah’s prayers, God used him to control the rain for three and a half years. There is no inherent power in prayer itself, our prayers link us to the allpowerful God who rules everything for His glory. When we pray we are communicating with the Almighty Creator of heaven and earth. When we understand that apart from Jesus Christ we can do nothing (John 15:5), we will pray more earnestly about everything concerning our lives.

God saved George Muller, a rebellious young man, in his twenties. Muller founded an orphanage in Bristol, England because he was concerned about the orphans that roamed the streets. Muller and his wife sold everything they had and gave it to the Lord’s work. They began praying for God to provide for their own needs and the needs of the orphans. Muller’s favorite verse was, “Open your mouth wide and I will fill it” (Psalm 81:10). For over 60 years God faithfully provided for as many as 2000 orphans at a time in response to secret prayer. Muller didn’t disclose any needs to anyone, even if they asked. Muller and his staff would pray and often see God provide

the exact amount that they needed on the day they needed it. Muller gave all the glory to God in his writings of how the Lord had provided, but only after the needs had been met. A powerful book on prayer, “George Muller of Bristol.”

A WING AND A PRAYER Carlin Lawrence carlin@agairupdate.com

“And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit” (James 5:18). God didn’t answer Elijah instantly when he prayed for God to send rain; it took Elijah seven attempts before the first cloud appeared in the sky. Sometimes God allows us to wait before He answers our prayers to keep us seeking Him or for other reasons that

“Trust in him at all times, you people! Pour out your hearts before him! God is our shelter!” (Psalm62:8).

we never totally understand. Sometimes God says “No” to our prayers for His own reasons. In these situations we have to trust Him and His omniscient wisdom because He knows all the facts and can see the future, which we cannot. When we encounter God’s delays and denials of our prayers, we need to remember that He has every right to overrule our prayers for His own sovereign purposes. Silent prayers, short prayers, daytime prayers, middle of the night prayers, God is always listening. “Trust in him at all times, you people! Pour out your hearts before him! God is our shelter!” (Psalm 62:8).

William Tyndale was born in the 1490s in Gloucestershire, England. He was the man that published the first ever mechanically-printed New Testament in the English language, which was a crime punishable by death! He had told some other preachers, “If God will spare my life, before many years pass, I will cause a boy that drives the plow to know more of the Scripture than you do.” At about the age of 42, after spending 1 1/2 years in prison, Tyndale was strangled, and burnt at the stake in Brussels on October 6, 1536. His last words were, “Lord, open the King of England’s eyes!” “Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and He hears my voice” (Psalm 55:17).

In 1604, King James gave the order to fifty biblical scholars to write a new English translation of the Bible. The King James Version of the Bible was published in 1611. Tyndale’s words account for over 80 percent of the King James New Testament and for over 75 percent of the Old Testament books he translated. Four hundred years later, most people who quote the Bible quote a version published in 1611. God opened the eyes of the King of England. And today anyone can know the Bible as well as any preacher if they have the desire to learn what the Bible says. God answered Tyndale’s prayer!

Paul wrote, “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior” (1 Timothy 2:1-3). Christians should pray for leaders of their country, state, county, town, family and friends. If Christians would spend more time praying for the government leaders and spend less time criticizing them, their success rate for changing government actions would increase dramatically. “Be anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).

Recently, Jerry looked at me and said what is that smell? We drove by one of the rice fields and saw where it had recently been harvested. There's something special about the cool breeze in the air and the smell of freshly cut rice. ➤

The Season is Coming to an End

Jerry and I like to take our dog Rosie riding down our farm turnrow and then down a gravel road, riding through more farms ending up in a beautiful dense forest of trees where we circle back. It's almost a daily ritual and my favorite part of the day.

REGINA’S PERSPECTIVE

agairupdate.com | B 37 UNITED STATES MADE435-744-1019INTHEUSA

B 38 | agairupdate.com UNITED STATES

The new theme that I have for the upcoming season is going to be safety. I am fortunate enough to give CE classes in several states, and this will be something I focus on. It is also something that we'll be focusing on with our development with Chem-Man.

I am working with Driftwatch and trying to get them to allow users to put alerts that will show up for anyone using their system. This way, if there is something such as a new mettower or windmill, highline risk, etc., these could be marked as obstructions, and the issue could be notated. This would make a huge difference in our mapping system, and pilots could be aware of potential hazards.

We are also working with a database of the highline wires in the USA to overlay our maps.

Grain trailers are busy on the road, and combines are in the field. Yes, the season is definitely slowing down for our industry, but it's time to let the farmers reap what they sew. It seems like yesterday we were looking up in the air, and Jerry was taking pictures of our ag pilot friends flying from dawn til dusk.

technology takes a lot of work. We worked very hard on it and still are. This is definitely something that is growing in demand and taking off. It is also something that is evolving and will continue to evolve. It takes work on both sides, including the GPS developers and our ChemMan developers. Hopefully, we will have several more GPS companies getting on board by the next season.

We are already scheduling some upcoming conventions and preparing the exhibitor forms. The older I get, the quicker everything comes and goes.

I'm looking forward to seeing our friends at the next conventions. This includes volunteers, ag friends and vendors. I wish we could go to all of them, but if we can't make it, we try to at least support our conventions. That's very important to me. We are all kind of a little family with a reunion each year.

Many of our customers are still very busy working. However, many are taking a well-deserved break after working hard this season.

Every year I like to focus on a theme. The past season has been technology. We were very focused on helping make the flow a lot easier in the cockpit. We helped to easily transmit information back and forth electronically through the GPS

We have an existing obstruction option. However, this is only per operation. We are also thinking of having a shared option for this feature.

Y'all stay safe!

They also attempted the first "defoliating" or desiccating of potato vines with the old original calcium cyanamid cotton defoliant, commonly known as "Black Annie." This was not entirely successful. Effective defoliation became commonplace, however, when newer and better defoliants and desiccants appeared.

The first helicopters to be used in Maine were Bell Model 47s, which were working during the 1947 crop season. Two years later, in 1949, Kaman Helicopters built a unique, dualblade model which was obtained by Air Ag and flown regularly by the firm's pilots, including Al Averill. This rare machine worked extensively in the Maine area and also in New York on orchards. Pure sulphur dust was applied by this and other more conventional machines.

THE SPREAD TO THE EASTERN SEABOARD — Chapter Five continued…

Leapfrogging from New York up into the rock-bound coast of Maine is relatively easy by means of the printed word. Arriving in the middle of the famous Presque Isle potato growing region, it doesn't take long to learn from pioneer operator Al Averill that agricultural flying is nothing new in "TheMaine.start,"

Air Ag Service attracted a great deal of attention and quickly became successful with the farm community. According to Averill, the old standby cotton insecticides like calcium arsenate were used, but the new DDT dust had come along and was widely adopted, in addition to the new fungicides which worked very well.

The overpowering urge to live in Maine and to resume helicopter agricultural flying precipitated his permanent move back to that state in 1966 and the formation of his firm, Northeast Helicopter Service. This firm operates over much of Maine's tillable land, from Bucksport up through Old Town and on into the Presque Isle region.

Averill's flying career with Air Ag was interrupted about 1951 when he accepted a job at Kaman as a test pilot and technical representative. In this position, he promoted helicopter use all over the country and into South America. Eventually, he went with Bell Helicopters and worked there until 1966.

Joe Virchow of Rockland, Maine, with Stearman in the late 1950s.

according to Averill, "began in 1936 when a Curtiss Robin, flown by Ernest Pretsch, applied Bordeaux dust to potatoes affected by blight on Wallace Woodman's Sunny Brook Farm in the Washburn area of Aroostook County. Another plane joined Pretsch and they applied 2,900 pounds of dusts on 70 acres in about 45 minutes. The results were good, and the work received widespread publicity, making all of the newspapers. It was even reported in the Country Gentleman magazine of January 1937. This job created so much farmer interest that, from that point on, transient agricultural flying on potatoes became fairly common in the region."

However, according to Averill, no permanent local operation developed until May 1947: "Al Newton and Larry Wright organized Air Agricultural Service at Presque Isle and began dusting potatoes and blueberries with a helicopter in 194 7. I joined them as a pilot in 1948, when they expanded to three machines."

The Northeastern region has produced not only pioneer helicopter services, but it has also produced many small but influential fixed-wing operations such as the one organized by Joe Virchow at Rockland, Maine, in 1951. Virchow began with one Stearman and a pair of Waco UPF-7s and became well-known and respected in his region. His influence and that of other post-war pioneers, has helped. to make the Northeastern farmers perhaps the most enthusiastic boosters of agricultural aviation. What they lack in number, they make up in enthusiasm!

TOP TO BOTTOM

In addition to standard crops, large acreages of wild blueberries exist and are commercially treated by air. Averill's machines are also in considerable demand by flying sportsmen, who hanker to get back into Maine's virgin fishing waters, which can be reached only by air or canoe.

From the beginning, this firm has been a leader with wellknown early pilots like Jay Scammon, John Scott, and Bruce Towle, who created fine reputations for themselves and for the firm. These men have been followed by Averill's son Mark, Jeff Peterson, and Dale Mahan. Al himself still flies when necessary and often assists the Maine Conservation Department on special assignments where a helicopter is used, such as fish stocking, and moose population surveys.

The firm is still active and strongly involved in cranberry work, as well as with other crops. It was one of the first firms to engage in mosquito control, entering this phase in 1949. It became involved with gypsy moth control spraying in the early 1950s. According to current vice president E.W. Wiggins, Jr., it is believed to be the oldest helicopter

agricultural operation still working in the United States. Presently, Bell 47s and JetRanger 206Bs comprise its fleet.

One other significant helicopter service in the Northeast is that of Wiggins Airways at Norwood, Massachusetts. Wiggins has been actively engaged in agricultural helicopter service since 1947, when it acquired a Bell B-3, Serial No. 7 and began dusting cranberries. Jack Connelly was the pilot on the first job.

Three airline pilots formed a partnership in 1995 to start Agrossol, an ag flying service in Casa Branco, SP. The airline pilots hired Arnaud “Binho” Araujo, who had ag flying experience, to manage the newly formed company. In 1997, Binho bought out the airline pilots and became the sole owner of Agrossol, operating one Piper PA-25 Pawnee that the company still uses today.
