Does this mean despite all the efforts by NAAA and individual operators, focusing on safety is a moot point? No, not by any means. When one considers the number of hours flown and, in the case of the corn run, the time frame, then sophisticated aircraft with numerous cockpit distractions, speed and size, fatality numbers could have been much worse without PAASS and the continuous safety messaging of NAAA and NAAREF. However, it does cause one to contemplate that without PAASS why Brazil has an equal number of fatal accidents, proportional to the number of aircraft as the US with approximately a proportionally equal number of hours flown per season. That is a good question worth exploring. Nobody definitively knows the answer. Appropriate assumptions would be that a significant portion of the Brazilian ag-plane fleet consists of the slower Ipanema aircraft, while the others are turbine powered. Second, fields in many parts of Brazil are typically vast with fewer obstructions. Additionally, Brazilian pilots must attend an ANAC-certified (Brazilian FAA) ag-pilot school for their ag-pilot’s license. Although this training has a different approach than PAASS, it still is a safety factor.

In the past 26-27 years since PAASS was implemented, the lowest number of fatalities was four in 2012, during a very slow spray season overall. The highest number of fatalities recorded was 19 in 2000 (Source NAAA).

US operators treat me very well when I visit, but I would never ask them to stop spraying because of it. They are busy and I understand why entirely from my tenure spraying. But in Latin America, for the most part, it is different. When I visit operators there, everything comes to a complete stop. Typically, a large barbeque is provided. I don’t ask them to keep spraying, as it would be considered an insult to their efforts to welcome me.

Is Nine the Final Number?

Nine! As of this writing on August 23, nine US ag pilots have lost their lives while ag flying and an additional one in Canada. It’s not an unheardof number in years past, but still unacceptable.

I do not see much chance of a cultural change for either country. Each is pre-wired for the way they handle life. It would be inappropriate to say Latin Americans should kick it up a bit or that Americans should slow down. But in the final assessment, a bit less mission-oriented action on US pilots’ part would be a good thing. It actually might save a life or two, maybe even more!

Mission-oriented, get the job done, just one more load often over grossed, up against the competition, etc., is not an unusual mindset for US ag pilots. This is not just the American agpilot population, but a part of American culture compared to that of a more relaxed attitude of Brazilian and Latin American cultures. I see this in my travels in the US and Latin America.

Story and Photos by Josh Alameda

The assembled team at HFS was the most profound group of professional aviators I have ever had the pleasure of working with. The aviators, loaders, drivers, and office personnel all came together and formed a family away from home. We all woke to the same beat, worked the same hours, prepared meals, and ate together – outside of the aircraft, an observer would be unable to tell who belonged to what role in the operation – all equals in respect, all working for value. Before my time here at Hendrickson Flying Service, I had only experienced this community level in one other place –deployed military operations. I suspect this is no accident as the founder of HFS, Chuck Hendrickson, was a Vietnam combat veteran. He started this company after flying Huey helicopters for the U.S. Army. It is my belief and experience that Chuck’s exposure to military maneuver, combat, and leadership is what ultimately has developed the HFS community into what it is today. I never got to meet the man as he passed away before my arrival into his world; however, I feel I have got to know the man he was through the community he built and through his surviving family.

The corn run of the American Midwest is a colossal event that shakes the aerial application community from coast to coast. Months of preparation have been spent readying to begin at a moment’s notice, as signaled by the tasseling of the corn. Applicators journey from every corner of the country to assist in the looming workload ahead – a silent monster is preparing itself in kind. This gathering takes place at remote airfields like Hendrickson Flying Service, a small grass strip summoning a fleet of fixed and rotary aircraft, support equipment, and personnel. Arrangements are all in place, staged to begin at a moment’s notice.

Reprieve does not come in the form of rest but instead from comradery, at least that can be said of my experience at Hendrickson Flying Service located in Rochelle, Illinois, off the Lincoln Highway. Anyone involved can count on anyone to lean on, where help from each other is never in short supply.

The signal comes, engines roar to life out of hibernation, staggering levels of acreage needing the critical role of agricultural aviation pour in, and the aircraft roll out. The hours stretch into infinity, timelines genuinely unknown, and completing the day’s workload is the only recognizable target; anything further out than today is impossible to predict. The intensity of that day’s labor is grueling. All that can be expected is that tomorrow’s labor will be the same as today’s – sunup to sundown – a nonstop Olympic-level test of endurance where mistakes can claim life.

The business was good, and one helicopter quickly became insufficient for demand. A second Schweizer 269 was added, and eventually, he grew his fleet to five. Following the Schweizer, Chuck added the mighty Sikorsky S-55 to the inventory – a considerable development in Hendrickson Flying Service history. The addition even made the local paper, which is still framed on the wall of their office today.

Fixed-wing aircraft became inevitable, and Hendrickson Flying Service acquired its first non-hovering aircraft, Stearman biplanes, purchased from M and M Flying Service in Texas. At this time, Hendrickson had the five Schweizer 269s, the Sikorsky S-55, and the Stearmans all running out of his home airstrip, the dairy replaced with a runway and hangars. At this time, most of the work was cannery contracts for vegetables. Eventually, the Schweizer and Sikorsky helicopters became impractical in their work capacity and increasing maintenance needs. They were replaced with the workhorse Bell 47 in multiple variants. Similarly, the Stearmans’ time ran out and had to be replaced with Weatherly aircraft and two 301 Air Tractors. ➤ Early days of Hendrickson Flying Service.

Chuck Hendrickson stands with Ron Korth. Chuck Hendrickson in the cockpit of a UH-1 in Vietnam.

Following U.S. Army flight school and achieving his rating as a UH-1 Huey pilot, Chuck Hendrickson was sent overseas to fight in Vietnam. He was stationed with the 1st Calvary Division, 229th Battalion, C Company. In the most unlikely of circumstances, it was here that Chuck found his lifelong passion for aerial application. The mosquitos were ravaging the camp, making life unbearable. Chuck, a farm boy at heart, got to work and had a small homebuilt spray system put together and strapped to the skids of his Huey. He dispensed malathion across the camp, controlling the mosquito population and saving the sanity of all who lived there. Chuck had a habit of sending recorded tapes home instead of letters and can be heard on a recording stating that he knew exactly what he would be doing when he returned home – aerial application.

Chuck Hendrickson’s American dream started long before his family’s piece of land was ever home to an airstrip. He grew up on the Hendrickson dairy farm, where he worked since he was a young child. Aviation came into his life young as well; he soloed his first airplane, a J-3 Cub, on skis as a high schooler. After two years at Western Illinois University, Chuck signed up for the U.S. Army as a Warrant Officer Candidate with a path toward rotary wing flight training. On his way to the recruiting station, he met a man named Ron Korth, who would become his lifelong friend and work alongside him in the future at Hendrickson Flying Service.

Chuck’s tenure in Vietnam ended, and he returned home a Purple Heart recipient. His final post with the military was as an instructor at Fort Walters before returning home to his family’s farm. He had accrued a small amount of combat pay and used it for precisely what he said he would do upon his arrival home; he rented a Schweizer 269 helicopter and a truck; Chuck’s American dream was starting to take shape.

This fleet continued to run until the mid-90s, when a pistonpowered M18 Dromader was purchased. This continued until the early 2000s when two turbine Dromaders, a B model Huey and a Grumman Ag Cat entered service at HFS.

Perhaps the oddest addition at this point was that of the Piper Pawnee. Sitting in a barn for a considerable amount of time, it needed extensive repair, but Chuck bought it with a purpose. He hired a young new pilot, Ross Norbury, who cold-called him looking for a seat fresh out of flight school. Chuck gave him the opportunity to rebuild the Piper Pawnee and, in doing so, earned himself a seat flying that aircraft. Ross accomplished this goal and is still flying with Hendrickson in one of the two Thrush 510P aircraft. The Pawnee now serves as a training platform for new pilots and is currently flown by a young woman, Cassidy Ogg. The current fleet continued to adapt and change with the needs of the company, which now consists of four Bell 47 variants (two Wasps, a Tomcat, and a G2A – not counting the several remains of more in the North Hangar), two Bell 206 Jet Rangers, two Thrush 510P and one Piper Pawnee.

L-R: Chuck's Son Cameron Hendrickson is at the helm of the business. Corey Hendrickson (middle), is Chuck's daughter, and Kasper Smith (right), son of Corey Hendrickson and Jacob Smith (Operations Manager) and grandson of Chuck all contribute to the operation.

Today, Hendrickson Flying Service’s day-to-day operation is run by Chuck’s son, Cameron Hendrickson. Judith Hendrickson, Chuck’s wife, remains involved as well - her presence is deeply felt and respected when she joins in the action during the corn run season. The pilots in the organization also double as the mechanics in the offseason. Cameron and Eric Bell are the in-house Inspection Authorization (IA) mechanics. Andrew Feher, an aircraft loader, is also an A&P in the off-season or as needed for the mission. Some loaders are long-time hires and private aviators; they work in the industry while awaiting a seat, gaining the knowledge and experience to make them expert aviators when the time comes. Others are hired for the season and are new to the industry, just wanting to see what it is all about. ➤

Additional aircraft used for ferrying parts and training: a Cessna 172, Cessna 150, and an Aeronca Champ. The helicopters at Hendrickson Flying Service utilize the AgNav Guia GPS system with flat fan nozzles. The airplanes are outfitted with SATLOCs with a poly-aerial triple-tip nozzle design.

Clockwise from L-R:

2) A spray system rigged on the UH-1 in Vietnam by Chuck Hendrickson for mosquito control. 3) Chuck in Vietnam-era UH-1. 4) Peter Schellenberger talks business with Kasper Smith between loads. 5) Katee Hendrickson assisting with ground operations.

Before my career in aerial application, I served with the United States Air Force and eventually trained as a helicopter pilot through the same warrant officer route that Chuck Hendrickson followed decades earlier. After my military career, I wanted to return to my family’s roots in agriculture and found work flying a Bell 47G5 with Wilbur-Ellis in King City, California. My path led to Hendrickson Flying Service in the Illinois and Texas operations. Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, photography, and writing - a good combination that keeps me fairly busy in the off-season. I wanted to extend a special thank you to my family, especially my two children, Addison (11) and Lia (7), for their enduring patience while I am away from home working.

Attention!

by Tracy Thurman

The Commanding Officer stood before the formation of Marines to address the recent rash of accidents that had been occurring at MCB Camp Pendleton, which unfortunately included men from our own unit. What he said has stuck with me throughout the years, “In combat, we expect losses. That is the nature of war. We train like we fight. But we don’t die doing it! There’s no reason to suffer casualties in peace. No reason at all.” Here we are, suffering casualties in peace. Good men lost. Talented pilots. Husbands, fathers, brothers, friends. Each one takes a piece of the rest of us with him. The tragedy is as deep as it gets. It’s heartbreaking and demoralizing. And unnecessary. ➤

Every year we lose pilots to accidents. Some years are worse than others. We go into the season knowing there will be casualties. Hoping there won’t be, but history has taught us there will be. Something’s wrong with that picture. We aren’t going into combat. We aren’t facing an enemy who is actively trying to kill us. There are no “acceptable losses.” None. We should not have an industry that expects casualties. But we do. We’re doing a hazardous job. There’s no argument there. But it should not be extracting the costs that it does. We are the only ones in command of the aircraft. Barring any mechanical failure, every minute of flight time is directly determined by what we do or don’t do in the cockpit. Ag pilots are dedicated to their job; ninety-nine percent wouldn’t want to do anything else. We’re not average pilots. We have a skill set that the majority of pilots cannot attain. That being said, we also have a characteristic drive that can push us past our limits before we know it. We’re trained to think out ahead of the airplane. Sometimes we might think a little too far. Our brain might be in the turn at the other end of the field when it should be concerned about the obstacles at the edge of the field. A pilot might see the wires or the trees, but then his mind goes past them to the turn or another set of obstacles farther away. He knows the obstacles at the edge are there, but he’s disconnected from them in order to focus somewhere else. The more immediate hazard subconsciously slips down the priority list. I know this because I’ve done it myself and had to suddenly yank the airplane away from what I should have been prepared for five or six seconds in advance. How does that happen?

Operational Distraction: Not long ago, I was flying a field amid a wind turbine farm. I’d circled the field and identified the obstacles. I had a load of herbicide; wind direction was critical to the application. I dropped down into the field next to a set of tall wires to set my A-B line and lay out some smoke. I pulled up over the wires at the north end and began my turn toward the west edge. ➤

A 18 | agairupdate.com INTERNATIONAL

Don’t crowd yourself. These airplanes are plenty fast enough to afford the few extra seconds it might take to give yourself safe separation from obstacles, stable flight, and enough time to keep your mind on track. The objective here is to do a good job and return safely to the airport with everything intact. That’s all there is to it. You’ve got nothing else to prove.

We layer our visual scans as we fly. The wider the layers, the more visual information we receive. But we also lose details and mental prioritization. As we become accustomed to our environment, we tend to get a little complacent about the details. Whether we know it or not. We’re thinking too far into the future and lose our more immediate situational awareness. A half a minute is a long time in this job. How far out do we place our thought processes? I can’t quantify it. It’s different for every individual. A pilot needs to know what his next move will be well in advance. Clearing your straight-line path is always first. Plan your pull-up and turn after that. Clear your airspace, know where you’re going and how you’re going to get there with plenty of room.

There’s no reason to look back to where you’ve been.

I craned my neck to look over my shoulder to see what the smoke was doing. It was taking a few seconds to get a good view of where I’d been. In doing so, I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going. Though my hand was on the stick, the airplane was flying without me. I turned my focus back to my heading just in time to see the top of a wind turbine rapidly growing larger in my windshield. I had to turn the airplane away in such a manner that I wasn’t immediately sure where I was going other than away from that particular problem. Fortunately, I didn’t wind up turning right into another. Loss of situational awareness in an unfamiliar area. My mental britches were pretty well singed by a very stark reminder of things I already knew but was not practicing.

Rusty Johnson (1968-2022)

B 4 | agairupdate.com UNITED STATES

We would like to thank the first responders and the emergency staff who assisted at the scene. We would also like to extend special thanks to the Community of Lake Village for all their love and support given to our family during this difficult time.

Rusty was a man who loved his family and he showed that love through praise and being involved in their activities. Even though his job was from sun-up to sun-down in the summers, he made the time to be there for them. He drove with Carrie across states to support his kids’ events. Once a child was interested in an activity, Rusty became eager to learn more about the events so he could best support them. He even built a goal post in his backyard to help his son practice field goal kicking. For Rusty, it was rarely about winning and always about giving your best to the event and to the team. His daughters were avid supporters of rescuing dogs and Rusty opened his home to new pets routinely. When it came to charity work, he went beyond donating to events by joining the groups and actively supporting the Delta Men’s Association and Make-A-Wish, volunteering to auction items when needed. Having his children follow their dreams was important to Rusty and he showed this by following his own dream of becoming a crop duster, auctioneer, and community advocate.

Russell Anthony “Rusty” Johnson, age 54, of Lake Village, died July 26, 2022, doing what he loved. He was born June 23, 1968, in Greenville MS, to his parents Charles Dickens Johnson and Sarah Eunice Tipton Johnson. He was a Veteran of the United States Coast Guard where he served from 1987 - 1992. During this time, he was able to travel to the Northern United States where he met the love of his life Carrie, while stationed in Two Rivers, WI. They married on October 15, 1994, and moved to Rusty’s hometown of Lake Village, AR where they became parents to their three children.

LANE AVIATION, INC. ROSENBERG, TX

In August of 2002, he met the love of his life, Mikki. At the time, he was crop dusting in Texas and was home visiting friends. He flew down to Texas and told everyone he had met the girl he was going to marry. It took a little more convincing to get her to go out with him, but by November, she agreed, and by March, they were engaged. They were married on January 4, 2003, in Oklahoma City and made their home in Weatherford. During their marriage, they lived all over Oklahoma, including Yukon, Oklahoma City, Guthrie, Waynoka, and Wyandotte, before settling back down in Weatherford. Brady enjoyed collecting Hot Wheels, anything Smoky Bear, building handcarved models out of balsa wood, and giving gifts to anyone and everyone! He was obsessed with his three cars, a 2014 Smart for two, a 2011 BMW 328i, and his baby, a 2009 BMW 128i. Above all his hobbies and toys, his biggest passion was his family. He was the proudest husband and father and would have done anything to protect and provide for them, including the job that took him states away at times. He was determined to give his children a Christian education, and he loved to donate what he could to Corn Bible Academy and Western Oklahoma Christian School. In lieu of flowers, Brady would like memorials to be made to the Brady Penner Memorial Fund through the Bank of Hydro to help support his children. Brady is survived by his wife of 19 years, Mikki Penner, of their home in Weatherford; one son, Lachlan Penner, of the home; one daughter, Isla Penner, of the home; his mother, Laquita Littlebird of Weatherford; his father, Ron Penner, and wife, Nancy of Weatherford; his motherin-law, Vickie Haney of Edmond; father-in-law, Chuck Williams of Magnolia, Texas; and his enormously proud big sister, Allison O’Donnel and husband, Devin and their children, Emersen, Erileigh, London and Caed of Washington; sisterin-law, Candice Williams of Edmond; and bonus brother, Stephen Buddy, and wife, Kari of Foss and their son, Wyatt.

Charles’ love for flying began at an early age, and it seemed natural that he would one day follow in the footsteps of his father, ag pilot Tracey Stokes, and grandfather Dennie Stokes, who founded Stokes Flying Service in Earle, Arkansas, in 1981 and served as NAAA’s president in 2003. In 2005, Charles’s grandmother, Lou Stokes, served as president of the Women of the National Agricultural Aviation Association (WNAAA). Dennie Stokes also became co-owner of Mid-Continent Aircraft Corp. in Hayti, Missouri, after the company’s founder (and NAAA’s first president), Richard “Dick” Reade, passed away in the spring of 2021. At a memorial service for Reade at Mid-Continent’s headquarters on May 1, 2021, Charles was one of the pilots who flew in the missing man flyover formation in Reade’s memory, along with Tracey and Greg Stokes, his father and uncle, and Tommy Anderson of Tommy’s Flying Service in Sherrill, InArkansas.addition to flying, Charles enjoyed playing and watching football. He was a Tom Brady fanatic and got the pleasure of seeing him play in Tampa last year. In his spare time, Charles enjoyed hunting with his dad, going to the lake with friends, spending time with his family, and being the best uncle to his nephew, Kody. Charles is survived by his parents, Tracey and Tracy Stokes, his sister, Emma Stokes, and nephew, Kody Stokes. He also leaves his grandparents Milton and Sharon Southall and Dennie and Lou Stokes, aunt Crystal (Scott) Hill, uncle Greg (April) Stokes, cousins Brock and Ebby Hill and Reese Stokes, extended family and many friends.

Going to the Birds to Prevent Hazardous Strikes

By Jim Tise, FAA

The danger of bird strikes has been an albatross around the aviation community since humans joined their feathered friends in flight. The number of reported strikes in the United States increased by 144% from 2000 to 2017.

From 1988 to 2018, wildlife strikes killed more than 280 people and destroyed more than 260 aircraft globally. The annual cost of wildlife strikes is estimated at $150 million to $500 million in the United States and around the world.

B 14 | agairupdate.com UNITED STATES

“In the future, bird strikes are definitely going to rise because you’re going to have more aircraft in the sky,” said Dan Dellmyer, an engineer in the FAA’s Software and Systems Branch. He noted that the United States is seeing more rotorcraft and drones in the air, with the number of electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft also expected to grow. ➤

Promising research suggests UV lights mounted on helicopters and planes drive birds away from aircraft…and danger.

The Air Tractor 802 used for LED testing.

The most famous example of a dangerous bird strike was the 2009 “Miracle on the Hudson,” in which a US Airways jet was forced to land on the Hudson River after both engines of the aircraft ingested birds and failed.

The FAA is researching new and potentially game-changing technology that significantly reduces the chances of birds striking general aviation aircraft.

The technology inverts the customary approach to bird hazards, namely how pilots can avoid or maneuver around birds. The new approach — if positive results from research continue to play out — gives birds the warnings they need to fly out of the paths of oncoming airplanes and helicopters.

Populations of large birds — such as eagles and Canadian geese — are increasing, and quieter engines make it more difficult for birds to hear oncoming planes. Yet another factor is that airports are often located near attractive gathering sites for birds, such as trash dumps, swamps, and open bodies of water.

Rodney Shelley — owner of and pilot for his crop-dusting company Whirlwind Aviation in Fisher, Ark. — knows all about birds. A goose flew through the cockpit window of one of his planes, hitting his brother in the face. His brother was okay, and the plane landed safely, though it suffered severe damage. “We deal with ducks and geese on a minute-by-minute basis,” he said. It’s just every day, every day, every day.”

B 16 | agairupdate.com UNITED STATES

Testing revealed that avian-avoidance radar in the form of an antenna mounted on the aircraft is expensive, bulky, and difficult to install. There were also issues with the software, such as too many false alarms.

Dellmyer deemed the results “very favorable.” He estimates the birds were spotting the plane with the UV LED lights on from as far as 166 yards away, compared to 108 yards away without the lights on, giving the fowl plenty of time to maneuver out of harm’s way.

When the FAA began research on bird-strike avoidance in 2015, it considered two questions: 1. Can we put a radar system in the cockpit to help pilots avoid birds, and/or 2. Can we identify a system that deters birds from coming near us?

“With the lights on, I could circle the field … the ducks would take off and leave me alone,” Shelley described. “They wouldn’t stay in the field with me like they normally do. They would turn and go the opposite way immediately. It was pretty interesting.”

Next up, his office needs to find more funding to continue the next phase of research, including flying at night and in different weather conditions, as well as testing with different bird Whenspecies.asked what he would tell other pilots about lights, Shelley, was quite clear: “If the birds see that light, they will move away. I believe it actually does work.”

He also noticed that when the UV LED lights were turned off, the birds returned quickly.

The FAA tested the UV sensor on Shelley’s Air Tractor 802, flying the plane for roughly 80 hours over the course of several weeks. The FAA had him run through various scenarios, such as takeoffs and landings with the UV light on and off, diving, and hard banking.

While artificial intelligence and cloud technology might offer better solutions for bird avoidance in the future, Dellmyer says the UV LED light “is the better technology now.” Additional benefits include a simple and inexpensive installation process, and easy-to-do maintenance. Mounting the UV LED on a landing gear is a “perfect fit,” he added.

Rodney Shelley and his Air Tractor 802.

A second approach, said Dellmyer, addressed the question: “Can we alert the birds better?” After extensive research, the FAA believes the answer is “Yes.” Birds have tetrachromatic color sensitivity, which means they can see red, green, blue and ultraviolet colors. Dellmyer’s research at the FAA’s William J. Hughes Technical Center experimented with replacing the landing lights found on most general aviation aircraft landing gear with a pulsing ultraviolet LED light that birds can detect.

A doctor should not diagnose hypertension based on a single reading or at one point in time. If your blood pressure is elevated on an examination, your doctor may schedule follow up readings to determine if you have hypertension or not.

Frequently Asked Questions I have hypertension. What should I do? You should determine an appropriate treatment plan with your physician. Uncontrolled hypertension significantly increases your risk of stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, and other vascular diseases. Remember though, that the FAA evaluation is only to determine if you can safely fly for the duration of your medical. While values under 155/95 are acceptable for FAA medical certification, you should not think that these are acceptable for long-term health. If you

The American College of Cardiology’s published hypertension guidelines are as follows:

Your Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) is not required to follow up on your elevated blood pressure unless the systolic reading is higher than 155 or the diastolic reading is higher than 95 on the FAA medical examination. However, he or she may recommend that you follow up with your personal physician for an elevated blood pressure even if it is within FAA limits.

Hypertension

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is one of the most common conditions faced by pilots seeking medical Bloodcertification.pressure is the measurement of the force of the blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood. The measurement is presented as two numbers: the systolic (top number) over the diastolic (bottom number) in millimeters of mercury (mmHg).

How long will it take to get my medical certificate?

Dr. Penny Giovanetti, D.O., received a bachelor’s degree from Stanford, a master’s in Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine from the University of Iowa, and a doctorate from Des Moines University. She completed a 27-year career as an Air Force flight surgeon. She is board certified in aerospace medicine, occupational medicine, and physical medicine/rehabilitation. She is also a Fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association and a private pilot.

Certifying a pilot with well-treated hypertension is very straightforward. While we do certify individuals after a heart attack or stroke, it is much more involved. Why risk this or, more importantly, the possibility of permanent impairment? Can I get treatment that is acceptable to the FAA? Lifestyle changes such as weight loss, exercise, and a healthy diet are highly encouraged whether you have hypertension or not. Nearly all anti-hypertensive medications are acceptable to the FAA. Combinations of up to three medication components may be considered under the CACI program. The one exception is the class of drugs known as “centrally acting,” e.g., Catapres (clonidine), but this class is generally avoided in current practice. More than three drugs (not pills, as one pill may contain 2 or 3 drugs) will require a special issuance.

agairupdate.com | B 19 UNITED STATES have elevated blood pressure levels, do yourself a favor and get treated, even if you still qualify for a medical without medications.

If you meet all the criteria listed in the Conditions AMEs Can Issue (CACI) worksheet, your AME can issue a medical certificate at the time of your exam. You can view that worksheet at bit.ly/CACIWorksheets or simply Google “FAA CACI Hypertension.” Make sure that you bring the current, detailed progress note and have been stable on your medications at least seven days. Otherwise, issuance of your medical could be delayed. If you have any questions, contact your AME or Regional Flight Surgeon.

SPREADING THE

FACTS

The anti-conventional ag groups will lead you to believe that farmers are spraying the world to death. Pesticides, the overarching term for herbicides, insecticides, nematicides, fungicides, and other chemicals, protect crops (and other plants) against pests and disease. The United States applies about 1 billion pounds of pesticides throughout the country every year. 1 billion pounds sounds like a lot, but in reality it Evenisn’t.

if all of those 1 billion pounds of pesticides were applied to only agricultural lands (which they aren’t), it still works out to be less than 1.2 pounds of pesticides for each acre of farmland. For every thousand square feet block of farm land you walked through, there would only be 0.03 pounds of pesticide, if these were grains of rice in the field you likely wouldn’t even be able to spot a single one. There is a common myth about the over-application of pesticides on farmlands, but this is generally not true. However, we aren’t naïve. We know that sometimes you can find examples of over-applicating chemicals on farms. Some operations stick to older methods or less efficient ways of

Are Farmers Spraying the World to Death?

Michelle Miller - michelle@thefarmbabe.com

Farming is a business, and additional expenses, even ones as seemingly small as $10/acre, could make or break the budget that year. Over-application of pesticides is not an option for many farmers; it doesn’t help the crops and hurts their pockets. Also, applying the wrong amount of pesticides, whether too much or too little, can contribute to a severe problem for farmers, pesticide resistance.

So, now that we’ve established that farmers aren’t spraying the world to death, why do they have to spray at all? The short answer is food prices. Pesticides help manage pests and diseases at a lower cost than other methods. Without pesticides we would have lower yields (meaning less food), higher production costs, and more waste of products that aren’t marketable due to damage. This means that the food that does end up at the grocery store will cost consumers more. Pests and disease have short lifecycles, meaning they can adapt to their surroundings quickly and are “improving” constantly. One pest for many crops is stink bugs, they can hatch and begin reproducing in 60 days, with each female laying up to 400 eggs in her short lifespan. Other technologies, like GMO and genetically engineered seeds, help crops improve, but these take time, often years and years of development. Seed and crop technologies reduce the need for pesticides by increasing the crop’s resistance to pest and disease damage. Farmers are doing everything possible to bring safe, wholesome food to your dinner table.

applying pesticides. Still, the overall majority is up-to-speed on current science and technology. Farmers, in general, can’t afford to overapply. Pesticides are expensive! Even the “cheap” pesticides will cost you nearly $10 an acre to purchase, in addition to the fuel and labor to apply them.

Pesticide resistance is when a pest or disease becomes “immune” to the effects of the chemical pesticide and is no longer controlled by current products on the market. Pesticide resistance is a serious issue because very serious pests can no longer be eliminated from a crop field. When farmers have limited chemical options to control a pest or disease, they must revert to other methods, like switching crops entirely, ditching no-till farming, or using broader, harsher chemicals. Underapplication of pesticides is more likely to lead to resistance since there will be a remaining level of the pest in the field which is “immune” to the chemical. This pest will reproduce and pass along its immunity to offspring. This is an over-simplified explanation of how pesticide resistance occurs, but true nonetheless.

Oh, and don’t forget that even organic farmers use pesticides too. It’s essential in all types of farming!

What is my Engine Doing?

Robert Craymer - robertc@covingtonaircraft.com

Many have asked this question when the days get hot and long. I get many calls wondering why an engine is not making “full power.” As the outside air temperature rises, an engine’s performance can take the brunt. How do we determine if your engine is performing like Forexpected?yearsPratt

B 22 | agairupdate.com UNITED STATES CRAYMER’S COUNSEL

& Whitney Canada has produced groundrun engine performance charts. These charts have curves that take your OAT (outside air temperature) and field barometric pressure and convert them to “standard day” to determine engine performance. One issue that has popped up over the years is how the airframe restricts air into the compressor. We rely increasingly on airframe manufacturers to provide us with engine performance charts. These charts take the specific airframe inlet system and any filtration into account for calculations. This helps us get the best picture of your engine performance. ➤

agairupdate.com | B 23 UNITED STATES

B 24 | agairupdate.com UNITED STATES

Where the temperature for the day intersects the curves on the graph are now the targets we want to use to judge engine performance. This is a more accurate way to determine what the engine is doing than comparing it to another aircraft running nearby. For our example, 35 degrees OAT gives us a target on the chart for ITT of 765 degrees and Ng of 100%. We will also need the field barometric pressure for torque and fuel flow. Because it is close to where I live, I will use 29.92. That gives me a torque target of 1340 and a fuel flow target of 415 PPH.

What is your first step if your engine is not making the power you think it should? I would verify the gauges in the cockpit. I want to make sure that they are giving accurate readings. I don’t want to make maintenance decisions on incorrect information. Simple testing of the torque system and temperature indicating system can be performed. Secondly, on the engine side, test the ITT (internal turbine temperature) system and the engine trim stick to ensure they are functioning correctly. Also, take a minute and see if something simple is going on. Is there evidence of any air leaks, such as an airline chaffed or fractured? Sometimes the corrective action can be very simple. Once we know the systems in the airframe and the engine are functioning correctly, it is time to get down to business. Look at the ground performance chart, and across the bottom of most charts is the outside air temperature. We choose our current condition; for example, let’s choose 35 degrees Celsius today. That is 95 degrees Fahrenheit which represents a hot day here in Mississippi. For the sake of this article, I will use a performance chart for a PT6A-34AG. When you determine your engine performance, please use the chart for your airframe model provided by the aircraft manufacturer. I can now identify 35 degrees on the bottom of my chart and draw a line to the top of the graph. Notice that the 35-degree line now intersects curves for ITT (temperature), Ng % (compressor speed), fuel flow in pounds per hour, and torque in ft. lbs. Your specific airframe chart will provide you with this data in the same format as the gauges in your airplane. For example, some aircraft provide fuel flow in gallons per hour, and some use PSI for torque. If the chart you are using does not provide the data in the correct format, then it just takes some simple math to convert it.

There are two other things to point out on my graph: prop rpm is 2200. We will need to know that when we do the performance run. It also says that the chart is not to be used to accept or reject an engine. We are not trying to determine the airworthiness of an engine. We are using this as a tool to measure how the engine is doing.

agairupdate.com | B 25 UNITED STATES

With our targets now in hand, we can do the engine performance run. Since we are producing power with the aircraft on the ground, we always use a tie down and secure the tail to it. We don’t want to have any incident; over time, I have known of prop strikes that have occurred during a ground performance run. Don’t be Startnext.the engine using your normal start-up procedures. Prop set correctly, run the engine up to the target torque, 1340 in our example. We use the torque as the constant; we must ensure we can get the work out of the engine. As we are going to torque, we watch the other gauges to make sure we do not go past the redline for all other parameters. Once the engine has stabilized at the target torque, we record the actual ITT, Ng, and fuel flow. This is the snapshot of the engine performance. We typically see that we are below the target numbers on those three parameters. We reference this as margin or cushion. If at the torque target your actual ITT is 735, it means that we have 30 degrees of temperature margin in the engine. The same applies to Ng. These numbers all provide clues about what is happening inside the engine. The engine maintenance manual directs us where to look if we suspect a problem. Times

I believe this has been one of those years that I would call “challenging” for our industry. On the one hand, the extreme droughts have caused some operations to contract their work in other areas. One of my California customers mentioned, “In all my years, this is the first time I’ve ever had to take one of our planes to another area.”

Challenging

Another hurdle has been the rising gas prices. We’ve had many calls from our Chem-Man users on how to implement a fuel surcharge on their billing. There are multiple ways to do this: the tach hour, percentage of job, or charging per acre. Some add the cost to their application price.

UNITED STATES

One of the hardest things we’ve dealt with this year is the many accidents and fatalities. My husband Jerry is one of those the high rates of accidents?”. Doug Thiel, PASS presenter and also a friend, recently gave me a call. We talked about

CorinthiansarewewithcomfortwhichourselvescomfortedbyGod”(21:4).

“That we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God” (2 Corinthians 1:4). God comforts us to make us into caring people who are able to comfort and strengthen other people. God guides us through our problems so that when we see or hear of someone going through similar problems we’re able to comfort and strengthen them with the same comfort and strength God gave us. The more knowledge we have of God’s spiritual wisdom, the more we will understand how to comfort other people according to God’s will for their life. God shows patience and comfort toward His people, and we are to be likeminded toward other people because this glorifies God and Jesus Christ (Romans 15:5-6). “Comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, and be patient with all” (1 Thessalonians 5:14).

A AND A PRAYER Carlin Lawrence carlin@agairupdate.com

One of the reasons God allows Christians to go through physical and emotional pain is, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation” (2 Corinthians 1:3). The trials of life provide God with an opportunity to show us our spiritual, mental and physical weaknesses. This allows God to comfort us with His strength and wisdom so that we will become the spiritually strong Christians that He wants us to be. The trials and suffering in a Christian’s earthly life are the thunderstorms that bring the rain of God’s blessings upon our lives to make us stronger Christians. “But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God” (1 Peter 2:20).

As Christians increase in their knowledge of God’s wisdom, they will see that they are “Strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy” (Colossians 1:11). This world is being controlled by satanic forces; and these evil forces influence many of the circumstances in our life. The devil took Jesus up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours” (Luke 4:5-7). Jesus rejected the devil’s offer, but He didn’t dispute the devil’s authority.

God Comforts Us When We’re Going Through Problems

Jesus called Satan the ruler of this world (John 12:31, 14:30) and the apostle Paul called Satan the god of this age (Corinthians 4:3-4) and the prince of the power of the air (Ephesians 2:1-3). Job is a good example of how God allows Satan and his forces to influence our earthly lives (Job 1-2).

After Jesus Christ met with Paul on the Damascus road and Paul became a believer, Jesus said of Paul, “He is a chosen vessel “That we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the

Jesus said, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).

Paul said that he considered the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us (Romans 8:18).

“Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Galatians “Let6:9-10).those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator (1 Peter 4:19). The Holy Spirit gives us the spiritual wisdom and understanding to go through our earthly problems with patience and joy. “Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray” (James 5:13). Prayer is a weapon for all the circumstances in a Christian’s life. Pleasing God in our thoughts and actions while we’re suffering takes the power of God’s Holy Spirit working in our life.

Paul was beaten, imprisoned, and had many other sufferings (2 Corinthians 11:22-29). Later Paul wrote, “Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:9-10).

When we come to situations where it seems like there are no earthly answers to our problems, that’s when God can show us that His strength can bring beauty out of our problems—and He gains all the glory. When we get our eyes off ourselves and our weaknesses, we will see the power of God working in our life. God doesn’t start a work in a Christian’s life that He doesn’t finish; He completes every work He wants to do in your life (Philippians 1:6). It’s God’s strength that strengthens every Christian to accomplish His purposes. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ (Acts 5:41-42).

Mosquitoes Can’t Hide in Chatham County TWENTY YEARS AGO by Bill Lavender SAVANNAH, GA — I thought I just heard a clearance for “Air Tractor”, as I made the approach into SAV. In my aircraft I had Georgia’s Republican nomination for the next governor in this year’s November election. Interestingly enough, the controller had just cleared me to land number two behind “Air Tractor”. I commented to my political passenger (a pilot and friend of agriculture), “Wonder who that is?” Sure enough, I found myself in line on the taxi way behind an Air Tractor AT401 with big broad, black lettering across the top and bottom side of its wings, “Mosquito Control”; the mystery was solved. After dropping off my passengers at the FBO, I trotted over to where the Air Tractor was parked, off to the side of the main ramp by a row of T-hangars. The pilot was cleaning the windshield. I asked how things were going. “Oh, just fine. Doing a little mosquito control”. I introduced myself to the Chatham County Mosquito Control Commission’s (CCMC) fixed-wing pilot, Robbie Gardner, once a seven-year veteran ag-pilot. We only had a few minutes to talk about the virtues of mosquito control, therefore Robbie invited me for a return visit where I could meet the fine folks of this organization. I recanted I had written an article about Chatham County’s mosquito control project many years ago when Oscar Fultz was its director. Now CCMC’s director/entomologist is Henry Lewandowski, Ph.D.. Since my last visit, the CCMC has updated its aircraft fleet to an Air Tractor AT-401, C-model Aztec and MD 500E helicopter. This is quite an improvement from the days of my earlier interview when the CCMC used two Hughes 269s, the Aztec and an Ag-Cat. I promised Robbie I’d be back in about a week for the story. Most aerial applicators avoid drift like the plague, measure their application runs in swath width, and fly relatively low to the target area. These proven techniques for most agricultural crops do not apply for effective mosquito control. There are two basic methods of mosquito control; adulticiding and larviciding. For the most part, larviciding is conducted by applying a liquid or dry product into standing water, while adulticiding is accomplished by applying selected chemicals over large target areas that usually include populated sites.

As one can imagine, sand is extremely hard on the spreader.

Inside the Aztec, the rear seats have been removed and replaced with a 50-gallon poly tank for the product and another 12-gallon in-flight rinse tank. The pump is driven by a 12V DC 1/2 horsepower motor. A rheostat controls the motor’s rpm to deliver a flow rate of 2.3 gallons per minute.

Robbie also flies the 1966 C-model Aztec. The CCMCdesigned stainless steel booms support two AU4000 Micronair units that rotate at 10,000 rpm. This allows for a droplet spectrum with a medium diameter of 22-25 microns. CCMC droplet tests reveal this set up produces zero droplets over 70 microns. Research indicates that a 50-micron droplet marginally provides adulticide control, thus the need for the smaller droplets. With 25-micron droplets there are no deposition concerns and no non-target kills. The 25-micron droplet is too small to be visible on surfaces (like cars and windows) and not toxic enough to kill larger insects, while still being effective on the mosquito.

CCMC’s Air Tractor only applies dry larvicide material. A liquid product, Altosid Liquid Larvicide concentrate (ALL), is mixed at a rate of 54 ounces per 700 pounds of medium grade blasting sand, enough for 70 acres. Multiple loads are mixed, and then a conveyor belt delivers about 1400 pounds of finished material into the hopper of the Air Tractor. A more efficient and larger mixing system is being installed at the new facility nearing completion.

Robbie uses a Breckenridge spreader whose stainless steel vanes are protected with a special Teflon strip. Before the introduction of the Teflon strip, two sets of vanes were replaced during an average season (about 100,000 pounds of sand). This year, after applying more than 265,000 pounds of sand, the vanes have not been replaced. Before the end of this season, more than 40,000 acres will be treated with ALL by the Air Tractor and the MD 500E. The application pattern of the spreader is routinely tested and adjusted by the CCMC. Rows of buckets are placed across the Air Tractor’s flight path while dispersing sand. The sand captured in the bucket is poured into vials and weighed to evaluate the evenness of the application; the Air Tractor has an 80-foot swath.

Robbie Gardner flies the Aztec about 75 hours and the Air Tractor about 200 hours during a season. The season’s applications begin when the ambient air temperature exceeds 65°F. This typically begins in March through November, although applications take place any month of the year under the right conditions.

The third aircraft in the CCMC fleet is a 1988 MD 500E, flown by Scott Yackel, who holds an A&P Certificate with Inspection Authorization. Scott has removed 250 pounds of excess weight from the aircraft, but has replaced that with 177 pounds of spray equipment. The Isolair-built sidemounted broadcast spreader has a 20 cubic foot capacity. The side tanks have been mounted lower than normal for ease of loading the aircraft.

Floodingconducted.ofmosquito breeding sites from spring rains or late summer tropical storms typically sets off a mosquito egg hatch. The ALL larvicide must be applied by early fourth instar (growth stage) of the mosquito larvae for mosquito control to be effective. It takes CCMC’s two pilots about four days to inspect and larvicide a typical 8,000 acre “event”, the name given for a mosquito egg hatch.

Larviciding by ground and air is CCMC’s first line of defense against the mosquito. Adulticiding by either ground or air is used to compliment the larvicide program. The nuisance level that adult mosquito populations are placing on citizens determines how and when adult mosquito control operations are

The MD 500E’s adulticide spray system is unique with its two horsepower 24-volt high-pressure pump. When malathion is applied it is released through 24 internal impeller nozzles with a .005 diameter orifice delivered at a working pressure of 1500 psi. This produces an average droplet size of 25 micron. Pyrethroids are applied using a .020 orifice size at a boom pressure of 800 psi. Dry applications with the MD 500E are also made using an Isolair bucket. Scott added vanes to the bucket to increase the swath width to 100 feet at 80 mph and 200 feet AGL to spread sand mixed with ALL. For safety reasons, the Isolair bucket is only used in remote areas. Side unit broadcasters are used in congested areas.

B 34 | agairupdate.com UNITED STATES

The Aztec’s adulticide applications are made with 350-foot lanes at 150 feet AGL, traveling at 130 knots. All of the Aztec’s applications, are made with an observer on board. When the Aztec is used in highly congested areas, where there are numerous towers, this observer is essential for the safety of the flight.

The primary adulticide used is malathion at 2.6-3.0 ounces per acre. In cooler weather, pyrethroids are used at rates up to one ounce per acre. Typically, pyrethroids are used at the beginning of each season. All of the CCMC’s adulticiding aircraft use a smoker. The pilots are able to determine exactly where the liquid adulticide will travel. This is critical when gauging how high and close to fly to the ground or tree line, as well as where to fly during an inversion.

The helicopter’s dry work is supported by a truck and trailer unit, also designed by the CCMC. This combination unit utilizes pre-loaded bags of 700 pounds of mixed sand. The trailer, with a capacity of 10 bags, is driven to the target site, where the MD 500E is loaded.

Of the 450 hours Scott flies the MD 500E, it is used not only for aerial applications of both larvicides and adulticides, but is also the primary mode of transportation for Entomology Technicians to survey aerial target sites. From the site inspections, CCMC learns in advance where the next brood of mosquitoes will emerge and thus begins larvicide applications to prevent adult mosquitoes from reaching surrounding communities. In the spring, mosquito adulticide applications take place the first two and last two hours of the day. In summer, these applications take place only during the first two hours of the day. Applications are not made over open marshes or water. Adult mosquitoes are treated only over dry land areas, while larvae are treated in standing water sites.

B 36 | agairupdate.com UNITED STATES LOW & SLOW Mabry I. Anderson An Insider’s History of Agricultural Aviation

Sleepy Hollow Produce was dissolved about 1975, but its spin-off, Spunky Air Dusters, continued to operate. In 1980, Lascala withdrew from the firm and the operation was taken over by Mervin Lewis who changed the name to Airspray, Inc. This excellent firm continues to operate extensively in the area under the leadership of Mervin and his energetic, businesswoman wife, Dolly. Their operational strip and hangar are located on top of one of the region's highest and most rugged hills directly above the muckland farming area. When the departing agricultural aircraft breaks ground, it can dive almost straight down 400 to 500 feet and begin the spray runs over long rows of onions and celery. Climbing back up to the airstrip is another matter. No historical account of New York agricultural aviation would be complete without mention of Alden "Robbie" Robinson, who still operates Aero Spray and Dust Service in Accord. "Robbie" was a wartime pilot who went into the ag business in Massachusetts in 1948, with the purchase of a unique Stearman with an all-copper spray tank. This tank had been built for handling highly corrosive fungicides used on apple orchards.

According to Robinson, "The copper tank worked out okay, but it was so heavy that it cut down some on the load you could haul in that lowpowered Stearman!"

Robinson worked with some success in Massachusetts, but in 1954 decided on a New York move by purchasing the fairly sizable firm of P.A. Millis Air Service at Accord. Millis was heavily involved throughout that region, especially with sweet com work, which was considerable at that time.

Robinson's new fleet, obtained with this purchase, consisted of three Stearmans, one with a 450 P & W, one with a 300 HP Lycoming, and one with a 225 HP Lycoming. ➤ Alden "Robbie" Robinson spraying corn near Marbletown, New York, with 220 HP Ag-Cat.

A disastrous hangar fire in 1958 destroyed the Stearman fleet and, as time went on, subsequent purchases of Ag-Cats filled out the fleet. The firm continued to promote the sale of this aircraft and still operates them in the Accord area.

Another significant New York state pioneer was Don Hatch, whose Aerial Agricultural Service at Waterloo was organized directly after the war with one $1,400 Stearman. With the help of a partner, Jim Hoose, and Seneca County Extension Agent "Doc" Malchoff, this firm established itself and greatly increased the acceptance of agricultural flying in New York and into Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Joe Virchow of Rockland, Maine, with Stearman in the late 1950s.

The firm became prominent in row crop and orchard work throughout this region, as well as down into the muckland country around Middletown. In addition to its flying, it also became an original Ag-Cat Distributor in 1959, when Bud Confer took delivery of Ag-Cat Number 8.

All were equipped with Mississippi Valley Aircraft Service combination dust/spray units. Millis stayed on as an active pilot and flew for the firm along with veteran Bud Confer and Robinson himself.

In recent years, Robinson has voluntarily reduced the scope of his operation, but is still engaged in the business. The bulk of the firm's ag flying is now done by Robinson's son, John, and by another young pilot, George Parker, Jr. This firm has had, and still has, a strong influence on New York agricultural aviation.

Injuries: Minor The pilot reported that prior to spraying any field, he would make two surveillance passes. During the second surveillance pass on the day of the accident, although he was aware of a power line in the vicinity, the pilot did not ensure safe clearance from the power line. The landing gear struck the power line and the airplane impacted terrain. Both wings and the fuselage sustained substantial damage. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

The pilot departed for the aerial application flight and noticed an abnormal engine sound as the airplane reached an altitude of about 25 ft above ground level. Concerned that the engine could lose power over obstacles further along the departure leg that included a high traffic highway and a low power line, the pilot elected to make an immediate precautionary landing. During the landing roll, both wings sustained substantial damage due to impact with trees. During postaccident examination of the engine, a small amount of water was observed in the rear carburetor bowl; therefore, it is likely that water-contaminated fuel resulted in a temporary loss of engine power and the abnormal engine sound reported by the pilot. An engine run was conducted with no anomalies noted.

The pilot reported that he was taking off from his private airstrip with a left quartering tailwind for an aerial application flight. Due to payload and wind conditions, flying airspeed was not attained prior to his anticipated liftoff point. The nose of the airplane began to veer to the left, and he attempted to correct the drift. He passed his decision point and attempted to avoid a ditch in his path. The airplane impacted the northern bank of the ditch, shearing off the landing gear and damaging the propeller and spray system. After the airplane came to rest, the pilot egressed and a postaccident fire destroyed the wreckage. The pilot reported no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal Probableoperation.Causeand Findings — The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s improper decision to attempt a takeoff with a quartering tailwind and his failure to reject the takeoff in a timely manner, which resulted in a runway excursion.

Since 2020, rotary atomizers manufactured in Brazil have been evaluated for aerial mosquito control in North America.

Brazilian Agricultural Aviation Technology Contributes to Mosquito Control in the USA

In 2018, when Zanoni Equipamentos participated in its first Ag Aviation Expo, the Brazilian manufacturer of aerial application technologies took one of its rotary atomizers to the US (today, this is the type of application technology most used for aerial spraying of insecticides and fungicides in South America). The Hatfield family put Zanoni in touch with an operator in South Carolina, Al Allen, who provides aerial application services to farmers on the East Coast with his Air Tractors and Thrushes. In addition, it has also been working for the last three decades with mosquito control using its agricultural fleet and its Piper Aztec, performing prevention and emergency response services for counties in South and North Carolina.

In April of 2022, Turbine Conversions, Ltd. and Vector Disease Control International (VDCI) conducted a research protocol in Utah and evaluated the droplet spectrum offered by Zanoni’s Brazilian rotary atomizer.

The most recent of these was with Vector Disease Control International. Based in Arkansas, VDCI was founded in 1992 to provide comprehensive Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM) programs designed to protect public health through mosquito and disease vector control using scientifically and environmentally sound products and strategies. The company operates in more than 20 states and abroad, serving municipalities, mosquito-control districts, communities and associations, residents, golf courses, industrial facilities, state and national governments, and the military. Within its wide range of services, aerial application stands out for allowing the treatment of vast, dense, or dangerous areas for teams working in trucks or on foot. The company highlights that this is a crucial tool for scenarios with a small treatment window and when a threat becomes very large.

The new project, led by Turbine Conversions, originated from conversations between Mark Grahek, Broox Boze (technical director of VDCI and the American Association for Mosquito Control, AMCA), and Lucas Zanoni (responsible for R&D and international business for the Brazilian company).

After a brief online meeting, Mark and Lucas took VDCI to a virtual meeting with Brazilian experts to exchange information, in conversation with Julio Kampf (president of IBRAVAG), Gabriel Colle (executive director of SINDAG), and Eduardo Araújo ( SINDAG consultant currently responsible for promoting aerial mosquito control in the country).

The VDCI team also gave us more details on the specifics and requirements of this type of work, which requires coordination with local authorities (for health and environmental reasons) and communication with local aviation agencies (as pilots fly over urban areas). But despite being a different type of aerial application, it has many characteristics similar to crop protection.

“This is the droplet spectrum pattern we need for mosquito control. Tiny droplets to ensure that a large number of them are on the target (i.e., a high density). This is how we manage to kill the mosquitoes and ensure a safe aerial application.”

Brazil has received many new aircraft, with almost one hundred coming from the USA annually. This has given our industry maturity and helped both countries to fly faster. With atomizers, the Brazilian aerial application technologies industry can now help North American operators with a better solution for low-volume jobs. In the meantime, all the experience and knowledge brought from the United States can help Brazilian agricultural pilots promote mosquito control in the future. This is a win-win situation that should last for years to come.

In addition to helping Brazilians with strategies to expand the use of aerial applications in mosquito control, the American company has now helped Zanoni implement a field research protocol. Held in Utah in late April, the aircraft clinic evaluated the droplet spectrum of Zanoni atomizers on a Navajo Chieftain and a Piper Aztec. Calibration tests with the Zanoni M14 atomizers showed that they could meet the requirements of adulticide package inserts (Dv0.5 <60um and DV0.9 <115).

And to make your day, oftentimes, when the major portion of the pumpjack is removed, there is a single narrow steel cylindrical column the full height of the unit left in place. This is very hard to see, so be prepared that if you see a station without a pumpjack, the cylinder may still be in place, just waiting to snag a wheel or wing.

Next on the list of hazards to navigation in the oil patch are the huge hi-voltage 230 kV transmission lines that transport bulk electrical power from a generating station to electrical substations. They are often found in oil patch areas because of the co-presence of vast coal deposits that fire main generating stations. You often see a labyrinth of transmission lines heading off in the four compass directions from these stations. ➤ Jeremy Knibbs rolling out on Rwy 17.

Pumpjacks, Powerlines and Wind

For many people, hearing the term Bakken Formation draws a blank stare. For others living in Montana, North Dakota, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, it means ‘oil patch’ country.

A 36 | agairupdate.com

Underlying these areas lie rich deposits of oil and gas produced millions of years ago when the area was covered in an immense body of water known as the Western Interior Seaway. Over the millennia, the vast tract of prairies came into being as the waters subsided. Today this area is peppered with oil derricks, pumpjacks, and powerlines, and because of the largely flat terrain, also hosts some very unusual wind shear phenomena, which is all very good unless you are an ag pilot and your standard application height is 10 feet or so above the millions of acres of wheat, canola, and other crops.

Talk about hazards to navigation! Let’s start with pumpjacks, also known as nodding donkey, beam pump, horsehead pump, Big Texan pump, or donkey jack, to name but a few. They pump liquid out of the well and stand from 40 to 50 feet in height. The issue is not flying over just one, but because they are placed in large numbers, usually close together when dozens or even hundreds of units can be seen simultaneously. It becomes something of going up and down like a Yo-Yo, all the while trying to time the booms on and off appropriately. What you don’t want to do, especially when fully loaded with little excess power, is to be too aggressive in trying to reach that optimum spray height between units. Suppose you can do it safely, fine. If you can’t, that’s fine too. You don’t get paid extra to put on an airshow. This becomes even more critical when you have a tailwind that increases your groundspeed significantly, making the pushovers and pullups even more difficult. Leave yourself a very healthy safety margin between units so that something untoward doesn’t occur. Keep in mind the number one item in ag flying: “Safety first!”, all else a very distant second.

“So on I went until it was time to pull up, but as I pulled back on the stick, the only thing that was zooming was my heart rate. The airspeed was headed in the wrong direction fast, the controls were starting to feel mushy, and that darn tower was getting bigger and bigger.”

My colleague Jeremy Knibbs had radioed he couldn’t spray off his load because of a system failure. He said he would be coming in to try a landing with a full load, something he had never done before, and in an aircraft in which he had less than 50 hours PIC. If it wasn’t going to work, it would be jettison time.

The decision to fly under the lines must first have one question answered in a very loud ‘Affirmative!’: is there sufficient space under the lines to make it safe? This is not something where ‘probably’ or ‘kinda looks like it’s OK’ pass muster. It has to be “Yes! There is plenty of room”. Also, there is quite a difference between underflying in an AgTruck with an eight-foot height at 115 mph and an Air Tractor 802 with a thirteen-foot height at 140 mph. Yes, size does matter. Two last comments on the structures themselves. At the very top of the towers, a smaller ground wire cable – VERY difficult to see – connects the tower tops, awaiting to snag an unsuspecting ag pilot. Also, the main lines themselves can sag considerably due to the expansion of the aluminum or copper materials as they become hotter due to increased air temperature or power load. What you could safely fly under in the morning may not be safe in the afternoon.

The towers stand between 100 and 150 feet in height and are by themselves a definite hazard, although easy to see. The transmission lines themselves provide the major hazard, and the question is, do I go over or under the lines?

Of course, Mother Nature must always be in on the action and announced a noticeable increase in wind strength and crosswind component via the windsock.

A 38 | agairupdate.com INTERNATIONAL

Jeremy’s first attempt using runway 35 was into the wind, but this was greatly complicated by a grove of trees at the approach end of the runway, which by now the significant crosswind converted into nasty ‘rock and roll’ eddies, which resulted in an approach and flare that precipitated a go Hearound.then decided it was better to land on 17 with a downwind component, with no obstacles on the approach path. He made for a long setup and final and absolutely greased the landing with a smooth and uneventful rollout. Nice job indeed, and a great way to end another day of ag flying in the oil patch! Battery of Pumpjacks.

There is also the issue of wind shear or a steep wind gradient, where there is a considerable difference between wind strength even between layers separated by only one or two hundred feet. This was covered in detail in the March 2020 issue in the article “Low-Level Wind Shear – the Invisible Enemy.”, but here is a short quote covering what happened as I was flying over a transmission line because there wasn’t enough room to underfly.

Luckily, I cleared the tower and associated lines. The culprit (other than myself and lack of awareness) was a drastically stronger wind at tower height than at application height (Figure 1). As I pulled up, this resulted in a significant and rapid airspeed decay. It could have easily been a bad day at the office. The quickly changing nature of prairie winds is also something to contend with. I had just landed and was shutting down as the winds started picking up and veering.
