VISAS & RESIDENCE PERMITS

6

Admitted Students Guide Anglo-American University in Prague

General Information Below you will find a summary of the documents needed to apply for a visa/residence permit. However, immigration rules can change and individual Czech consulates may have local arrangements (such as an appointment-booking system) to help them deal with local issues. Please check the official website of the Czech consulate in your country of origin and verify where and how you will be applying for your visa.

Official Information Resources

In the Czech Republic, the administration of visas and residence permits is divided between the Ministry of the Interior (MOI), which handles foreign nationals already residing in the Czech Republic, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), which runs the consular service at the embassy where you will be making your initial visa application. For more information, visit mvcr.cz.

EU and EFTA Citizen Requirements Students coming from member states of the European Union, the European Economic Area, or Switzerland do not require a visa to study in the Czech Republic. However, within 30 days of their arrival in the Czech Republic, they are required to register with the Czech immigration authorities. If this is your case, you are required to report your presence to the appropriate department of the Czech Foreign Police which holds jurisdiction over the location in which you are staying. Please note that in order to register, you should bring a valid passport (or national ID), accommodation and insurance contract.

Non-EU Citizens All non-EU students require a visa or long-term residence permit to study in the Czech Republic. Long-term visa or long-term residence permit applicants must file their application at the embassy or consulate of the Czech Republic in the state where they reside. It is not possible to apply for a visa after your arrival, or even pick up a visa for which you have previously applied. Exceptions to this consular territorial competence rule apply only to citizens of the states listed in the Decree No. 429/2010 Coll. of the Ministry of the Interior. This decree contains a list of states whose citizens can apply for a long-term visa or longterm residence permit also at a diplomatic mission of the Czech Republic not located in their home country. The processing time for a visa is up to 60 days but delays are common. Therefore, we strongly recommend all applicants to contact their local Czech consulate at their earliest convenience. Visa/Residence Permit Checklist All non-eu citizens are required to apply for a long/term via or residence permit in order to be able to study in the Czech Republic. Here are the steps:

1.

Obtain all of the necessary documents

2.

Make an appointment at your Czech embassy or consulate

3.

File your application and wait for it to be processed

4.

Pick up your visa

5.

Travel to Prague

6.

Register with the Czech Foreign Police after your arrival

7.

Pick up your biometric residence card

Ensure all your necessary documents for applying (accommodation in Prague, health insurance, acceptance letter, etc.) are in order. Start 3–4 months in advance! It takes some time and effort to obtain a Czech visa or residence permit. Therefore, you need get started in advance and make sure you contact your local Czech consulate in good time!

Set-up an appointment to file your application. You should do this as soon as you start gathering your documents as some embassies/consulates have long waiting lists for visa application appointments.

This usually takes a minimum of 60 days from the day of your appointment.

You will need to do this at the same embassy or consulate where you filed the application so make sure to factor this into your travel plans. It is not possible to pick your document up at a different consulate or in the Czech Republic. If you’re a third-country national applying for a long-term residence permit, you will receive a short-term visa to travel to Prague, where you will complete the process and obtain the residence biometric card.

Typically you can be on your way to Prague and to AAU in no less than 90 days after the start of the entire process!

You must register within 3 working days (please refer to the following section to find out exactly where). EU + EFTA citizens who do not need a visa or residence permit can register within 30 days.

(for third-country nationals applying for a long-term residence permit) First, book an appointment with the Ministry of the Interior for a biometric scan. After the scan, you will be given a date to pick up the biometric residence card containing your biometric data. The card will be valid for 1 year, so if you plan to stay in the Czech Republic afterwards, you must plan to extend its validity.

Which Immigration Document? You can apply for two different kinds of immigration documents at the consulate before you come to Prague (based on your study status). You will not be able to study in the Czech Republic if you are not an EU citizen but have a long-term residence permit issued from another EU country. AAU is not responsible for your visa application. While we will answer all your questions, you must manage your own application, or hire a visa agency. In general, both long-term visas and the long-term residence permits: • allow students to reside in the territory of the Czech Republic for stays exceeding 90 days (three months) • allow movement within the Schengen Area for touristic purposes (for a period of up to 90 days within 6 months) • can be extended within the territory of the Czech Republic, in case the purpose of stay continues.

Get Your Biometric Residence Card

If you’re a third-country national applying for a long-term residence permit, after reporting your arrival to the Foreign Police, you must continue to obtain your biometric residence card. Here’s how:

1.

Find out if your application has been processed

2.

Make an appointment for a biometric scan

3.

Obtain the biometric residence card

If your application has been approved, you will find its reference number listed online on the MOI’s website. Also, the relevant office of the Ministry of the Interior will contact you unless you contact them first. If the processing of your application is suspended or the application is rejected, the Ministry of the Interior will send you a registered letter with information about the result.

If you find through the Ministry of the Interior’s website that your application has been approved, you are advised to obtain an appointment for a biometrics scan as soon as possible. Ask the specialists in AAU’s Student Services Center for assistance. They can call the Students Workplace of the Ministry of the Interior in Prague and make an appointment for you. You can also arrange it yourself through the Foreigners Reservation System.

After providing your biometric data, you will be given a date to return for your residence card. The approval of your application for a long-term residence permit becomes legally effective on the day you receive your residence card. Therefore, you need to pick up your residence card in person within 60 days after providing your biometric data. All payments for newly issued documents are made via revenue stamps (kolek). You cannot pay in legal tender. Revenue stamps may be purchased at any post office. Please note that if you do not pick up your card within this deadline, the processing of your application will be suspended.

Please note that the biometric residence card is valid only for 1 year, so if you plan to stay in the Czech Republic afterwards, you must plan to extend its validity. More information about the residence card here. Admitted Students Guide Anglo-American University in Prague

LIFE IN PRAGUE

Exchange Tips The Czech Republic has not adopted the euro and instead uses the Czech crown. Many currency exchanges found throughout Prague’s central tourist areas tend to charge high fees. eXchange LTC (Kaprova 14/13, 110 00 Josefov) offers very good exchange rates and is located in Prague 1 close to AAU. We advise you to avoid Euronet ATMs as they charge high conversion fees and encourage the withdrawal of unnecessarily high amounts of cash. Credit cards are accepted at most establishments, but check in advance and try to have some cash on hand as this is not universal. TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM Public Transportation Prague is ranked among the top 10 cities worldwide for sustainable public transport, coming in at number 5. The metro, trams, and buses are ubiquitous for mobility within the city and its outskirts. The Prague metro is very efficient and fast, operating daily from 4:36 AM until 00:00 AM and consisting of three lines (the green Line A, the yellow Line B, and the red Line C). The lines intersect at metro stations Muzeum (A/C), Mustek (A/B), and Florenc (B/C).

AAU

Please be aware that all public transport tickets (not long-term passes) need to be validated upon entering any metro station, bus, or tram; the same ticket is valid for all public transport for its duration from the time of validation. Badged inspectors have the right to check your tickets at all times, and if caught without a ticket you will be forced to pay a fine of 800

Enabling access to Prague’s downtown, trams can get you even to areas where other means of transportation are not allowed to operate. Trams operate throughout the city TRAMS center both day and night with the night tram service running from 00:00 AM–4:30 AM. A uniform interval of 30 minutes applies to the night tram service. All of the night trams stop at a central stop, Lazarská, so you can catch any night tram to this stop and get home no matter where you’re staying in the city. The same ticketing rules apply to night transport as during the day.

BUSES

Buses tend to operate in areas which are not covered by trams or the metro. Daytime buses operate from 4:30 AM– 00:00 AM while night buses run from 00:00 AM–4:30 AM at 30–60 minute intervals.

No standard price is set for taxi fares. However, drivers are required to display their prices on the doors of their cars. It is highly recommended that you ask the driver about the cost TAXIS prior to committing to any ride and make sure that the meter is running while you are in the taxi. It is also advisable to call your ride beforehand instead of catching a cab on the street. 7 REASONS TO MAKE PRAGUE YOUR SECOND HOME Welcome to Prague–the heart of Europe! Complementing the education you receive at Anglo-American University, your Prague experience will prepare you to step into the global marketplace with an international network of professional and personal connections backing you for life. Here are six reasons why Prague is the dream “second home” and how Anglo-American University will help you make the most of your time here:

1. Grow in a cosmopolitan atmosphere

Prague is diverse, multicultural, and exciting. With over 1.2 million inhabitants, 15% of which are expats, it is the largest city in the Czech Republic and the biggest political, economic, and cultural center in the country. The city is teeming not only with cultural experiences, but also with entrepreneurship, design, sustainability initiatives, and more. It’s the place to be, with AAU complementing it all with the most nationally diverse student body of any university in the Czech Republic. 32 Admitted Students Guide

2. Feel secure in a safe environment

The Czech Republic was recently named the sixth safest country in the world, making it top global city for studying and student life.

3. Enjoy affordable prices

As an AAU student you will enjoy a superior education and a degree recognized worldwide provided at an affordable cost when compared to other programs around the world. Moreover, the cost of living in Prague is significantly lower than in cities like London, Amsterdam, Boston, or Tokyo. An apartment with one bedroom costs around 13,500 CZK (approx. 530 EUR) and a loaf of bread is just 23 CZK (approx. 1 EUR).

4. Capitalize on an excellent location: the heart of Europe

Located in Central Europe, Prague serves as a great base for traveling all around Europe. You can fly to cities like Frankfurt or Amsterdam in an hour and a half while others like Vienna and Berlin are only a few hours away by bus. Traveling is easy and accessible when you’re in the heart of Europe, and it brings the continent’s work opportunities to your fingertips no matter if you’re looking for a summer internship or a job after graduation. That along with AAU’s work placement support is why 64% of our graduating students are employed already by the last semester of their studies.

5. Get stepping to a vibrant live music & club scene

Prague is proud of its musical tradition and has many big acts coming through, often for low prices in small and intimate venues such as Lucerna Music Bar, MeetFactory, and Divadlo Archa. If you’re more into clubs, Prague’s got you covered no matter your musical taste. Among the most famous clubs are Palác Akropolis, Cross Club, and Chapeau Rouge. 34 Admitted Students Guide

6. Explore countless historic sites & museums

It’s no secret that Prague is an iconic world capital. The city was almost untouched by bombings during the Second World War. This means Prague’s baroque and gothic architecture, among other styles, remains as some of the best preserved in Europe. AAU itself is lucky enough to be located in the newly restored baroque Thurn-Taxis Palace right below the Prague Castle. What more beautiful commute to school could you ask for? The city also boasts an array of museums to help you better discover its history, quirks, and vibrant artistic side from classical to contemporary.

7. Make the city your extended classroom

Want to extend your educational experience beyond the classroom? Take to the streets of Prague! The capital city is the perfect complement to the areas of study at AAU. Thanks to its excellent location, Prague is chosen every year to host international conferences and festivals as well as fairs related to business, design, diplomacy, art, computer science, and more. These events and AAU’s partnerships with a number of them give students the opportunity to get involved and explore their fields of study first-hand while gaining valuable practical experience towards their futures.

So what are you waiting for? Step into Prague, a crossroads of history, culture, art, politics, and business, and immerse yourself in the “City of a Thousand Spires”!
