NEW COMPANY OFFERS FORKLIFT SAFETY AND LOAD PROTECTION RANGE
W
ith offices in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia, SumoSafe Global is a new company offering a range of products that significantly reduce damage to palletised loads during the lift truck handling process and make forklift trucks safer to operate. “The SumoSafe range includes a number of ingeniously simple yet highly innovative designs that make a real difference to any forklift operator’s business, both in terms of safety and the cost savings that can be made by cutting or even eliminating product damage,” says SumoSafe’s co-founder, Simon Ross. He continues: “Any company that operates a forklift truck fleet - from a single truck upwards has a duty to ensure that its lift truck operators and the personnel who work around forklifts have
the safest possible working environment. “And, of course, forklift-related product damage within the supply chain is a significant and expensive issue for a great many businesses. In fact, it is probably a bigger problem than the industry is prepared to admit with companies in a broad range of sectors suffering huge bottom-line losses every year as a result of careless handling.” The SumoSafe range includes: • SumoSafefork - a radical new design of lift truck fork that takes traditional steel tines and encases the tip within a protective glove. Made from industrial grade polyurethane, the glove significantly limits the impact of a carelessly driven lift truck’s forks against a load. The results of
independent industrial testing may be seen at https:// www.sumosafe.net/ products/sumoglove/and indicate a very short ROI. • SumoGlove - a variation on the SumoSafefork, SumoGloves are fitted to the tips of a lift truck’s existing forks quickly and easily. They are compatible with all common makes and size of forklift tine; • SumoVision - a system that, as its name implies, improves an operator’s forward visibility even when sight lines are obscured by a large bulky load; • SumoLevel - a new forklift mast tilt indicator system designed to significantly reduce the accidental damage and associated safety risks that are often caused to a pallet, the load and the racking by a lift truck’s forks during the pallet picking and put-away process; • SumoBackbone - a protective device that can be retrofitted to any make or model of lift truck to minimize the risk of an operator suffering a serious spine or whip-lash injury in the event of his or her truck being hit from the rear by another forklift or reversing into a stationery object. “The benefit to any organisation that installs SumoSafe technology will be quickly realised,” says Simon Ross. “They improve operational efficiency and workplace safety to such an extent that payback is almost immediate.” Further information on how the SumoSafe range of products can benefit your business visit : www.sumosafe.net

MAGNUS GROUP RETURNS TO FAMILY OWNERSHIP: Legacy of Late Father Honoured by Son’s Acquisition A THRIVING Suffolk transport and logistics firm is beginning a bold new chapter – in the perfect tribute to its late founder. Blakenham-based Magnus Group is now under the helm of Olly Magnus, son of the firm’s original driving force, Paul Magnus. Known for having formed his own freight forwarding business – Burhill Logistics – as a partnership operation in 2003, Olly has now completed the sale of his Burhill proportion, in order to buy back a 40% stake of Magnus Group, following his father’s death in March. Formed in the 1970’s, Magnus Group has been providing warehousing, transportation and haulage for companies all over the UK and Europe, including major motor manufacturers. With a fleet of over 50 articulated vehicles, and employing 110 staff, it had in recent years been under the shared ownership of Paul Magnus, together with businessman Mike Pattinson. Determined to build a dynamic future for the Group formed by his father, and to do so with the brand returned fully to the family, Olly, 46, finalised his stake acquisition late this summer. The company has moved swiftly to show its intentions in the marketplace, and has since completed a rebrand, and the purchase of additional warehousing space of approximately 105,000 sq ft. At the same time, the business has been working toward its British Retail Consortium accreditation, and has made significant new client wins, including one with a major supermarket chain. “My family and I are delighted to have The Magnus Group back in our full ownership again, and very much feel it’s something my father would have been pleased to see,” said Olly. “I grew up admiring everything Dad had done to create a business here in Suffolk which provided employment, trading relationships, and an incredible reputation for

SAFE DRUM HANDLING IN A MATERIAL WORLD
W
hen speciality fabric manufacturer Vlisco approached Hosokawa Micron Ltd seeking a contained drum handling solution to provide a physical barrier between the operator and product to protect their workforce from contact with airborne, fabric dye particles, they were explicit in the challenges that needed to be met. These including the safe handling of drums of various sizes and the de-lidding, opening and emptying of drums into a reactor vessel within a contained environment. Hosokawa Micron engineers responded with a bespoke designed drum tipping glovebox, built around the dye reactor vessel, that met all the customer’s requirements including an Operator Exposure Level of <5µg/m³ to protect operators potentially harmful dusts. Drums and kegs of different sizes and weights are presented to the glovebox on a roller track and manually moved into the glovebox before being connected to the drum tipper. Drums are de-lidded and bags opened before special container clamps suitable for handling a range of weights/sizes attach the drums to the lifting/tipping
device. The drums are then automatically lifted, rotated and dropped onto the reactor where they are located into position to secure and reduce dust creation on discharge. The system is operated under a nitrogen blanket to minimise dust explosion risk and is engineered for ATEX compliance with drum lifting and rotation operated by intrinsically safe air motors. As the reactor vessel contains hydrochloric acid, special coatings are applied to the glovebox chamber and plastic parts were used to make up the filter and extraction systems utilising plastic fans, pipework and plastic coated valves and filters. As an original and heritage textile design company, Vlisco welcomed Hosokawa’s bespoke approach to providing a purpose designed containment solution that reduced both manual handling of drums and operator risk. Michiel Soolsma, Process & Quality Engineer, Vlisco says, “From the first contact, Hosokawa made a great impression by understanding our problems and coming up with possible solutions. Although we needed more time before
starting the project, Hosokawa showed patience and assisted us when asked. From the start to the end of the project Hosokawa showed their experience and engineered a glovebox that is operator friendly and could be integrated in our new installation. I personally enjoyed working together with their engineers on this project with Hosokawa.” For over 170 years, Vlisco has created more than 350,000 original textile designs. Many of these designs have become cultural treasures, bestowed with special names and meanings by the merchants of Central and West Africa.

VALVES
EATON’S CMA VALVES DELIVER PRECISE STEERING CONTROL TO FOUR-WAY SIDELOADERS Eaton announces delivery of a valve system to Bulmor GmbH, a leading manufacturer of sideloaders. By specifying Eaton CMA Advanced Mobile Valve with Independent Metering in its new series of four-way sideloader forklifts, the company achieved far superior steering control over earlier systems. For its latest four-way sideloader, which offers customized height and width to help maximize storage capacity, Bulmor sought an electrohydraulic mobile valve capable of overcoming a number of challenges. A key functional requirement was for precise control of the four independently steered drive wheels under various load conditions. As well as safe and smooth load control, the fourway sideloader features a mast shift function that can sometimes suffer from an overrunning condition where load inertia takes over control. Along with this challenge, Bulmor also wanted to reduce energy consumption of the overall machine. The answer arrived in the form of an Eaton sevenbank variable-inlet CMA090 valve, which is configured with Eaton’s Pro-FX® Configure software plus a DPS212 differential pressure valve. Chosen for its product performance and flexibility, the advanced CMA mobile valve with independent metering offers a sophisticated technology platform that streamlines and simplifies everything from design and set-up to operation and optimization. “All four wheels must follow a given steering algorithm without any delay or variance, regardless of load conditions,” Bulmor’s Thomas Goesweiner explains. “Here, the CMA valve’s flow control is providing the best
steering performance we’ve ever achieved.” The CMA’s integral flow share feature with priority selection for the steering system also eliminates the need for a remote priority valve. In cases where the supply flow is less than that required by the sideloader, this feature ensures power on demand to the steering system. System architecture is further simplified as the single spool operation for the single-acting cylinder reduces the number of valve banks; two banks are effectively combined into one. Eaton’s CMA valve also addresses the challenge of overrunning conditions, whereby the direction of the 14
Bulk Solids Today
VALVES desired velocity is in the same direction as external forces that can cause loss of load control and unsafe operation, typically during downhill operation or vehicle braking. While most applications use various conventional valves to create the opposing hydraulic force, the CMA valve system applies a load differential calculation to determine if the direction of load is the same or opposite direction as the desired velocity. Through port pressures and the areas on each side of the actuator, CMA valves can assign the load differential to be either passive or overrunning. For the latter, the control applies a meterout strategy and will hold constant pressure on the upstream port. Regarding efficiency, the CMA valve system continuously monitors the flow balance at the inlet port of the valve set, along with the pressure and temperature of the oil. The valve then controls and modulates the pressure governed by the DPS2 regulator valve with varying logic, thereby reducing the flow margin applied to the sideloader‘s variable-speed pump. Additionally, as the power loss of a priority valve has been eliminated by the integral flow-share feature, CMA valves effectively reduce any wasted energy. The reduction of power losses allows a longer operating time or more load cycles with a single battery charge; the sideloader rarely has to go to the charging station. Furthermore, the lower power requirement reduces the thermal load on the electric drive of the hydraulic pump. This leads to lower operating temperatures of the electrical components; interruption due to high temperatures can be avoided, resulting in higher efficiency and productivity. During field tests, Bulmor measured energy consumption across the machine. The engineering team found that the current draw of the steering system, when compared to earlier systems, had dropped significantly from 300 to 150 amps. The company also calculated a 30 to 40 percent improvement in efficiency - in essence, the less power loss, the longer the machine can remain operational between charges, which maximizes productivity and uptime. Using Eaton’s Pro-FX® technology platform, common application functions can be enabled right on the valve, reducing development time. With electronic tuning, performance parameters can be tested and optimized in seconds, not months, which is a genuine industry differentiator. The CMA valve is the only one of its kind, where it is possible to set system parameters from a laptop, vehicle app or other input device. What is more, advanced control algorithms mean these valves automatically optimize for conditions such as oscillation and vibration, improving control and reducing risk. Aside from forklifts, common applications for CMA valves include concrete pump trucks, refuse trucks, telehandlers, all-terrain cranes, utility trucks, grapples, aerial lifts, drill rigs, excavators, roof bolters, snow groomers, paving machines, reach stackers and more. MIXERS, BLENDERS & DRYERS
ROTARY CONTINUOUS BULK SOLIDS MIXER FOR HIGH VOLUME APPLICATIONS ⎯A new sanitary Model RCM36X9SS Rotary Continuous Mixer from Munson Machinery blends dry bulk solids with or without liquid additions, in-line at low cost over long production runs. Intended for dust-free mixing of bulk materials in large volumes, it blends primary bulk ingredients, minor ingredients, and/or liquid additions and coatings uniformly with little or no degradation. It features a stationary inlet, a stationary outlet, a rotating drum with smooth interior surfaces and proprietary mixing flights that impart a gentle tumbling action, distributing particles with each degree of drum rotation, imparting no shear or energy into the material. Unlike mixers with agitators that are forced through stationary material, the rotary continuous design has no internal moving parts and lower power requirements; a 2.24 kW electric motor rotates the drum at 8 to 10 RPM. Optional stainless steel piping with nozzles allows uniform spraying of liquid additives onto a wide expanse of cascading material produced by the internal flights, minimising the time required to coat all particles uniformly. A weir (dam) at the discharge end of the drum creates a build-up of blended material that overflows 16

The 4m long twin screw mixers include profiled covers as part of a design ensuring there are no areas of the machines that are awkward to clean. The casing’s hygienic, crack and crevice free finish ensure the continuous mixers meet the strict hygiene standards for food manufacture. The mixers also feature Ajax’s paddle screw geometry which provides efficient though gentle mixing with negligible damage to ingredients. “Our Ajax continuous mixers work extremely well, performing their job perfectly,” said Dieter Raes, technical director, Agristo. “We have worked with Ajax on several machines and would highly recommend them to other food producers.” Commenting Eddie McGee, managing director, Ajax Equipment said, “Ajax has worked with Agristo over a number of years to refine its mixers to suit local site needs and enhance the production of Agristo’s potato products.” On the mixers’ development Eddie continued, “Initially Agristo used one of Ajax’s hire machines to test various product combinations and handling requirements. The resulting feedback allowed Ajax to scale up the mixer’s design, producing a stainless steel continuous twin paddle mixer with a specially profiled casing for the most effective operation. The latest two mixers continue this progression; using Agristo’s experience with the existing machine and Ajax’s handling expertise to enhance mixing performance.” For more information on Ajax Equipment continuous mixers call +44(0)1204 386723, email: sales@ajax. co.uk and visit www.ajax.co.uk.

SIEVING SYSTEM FOR AM POWDERS
N
ew Balance adopts revolutionary vibratory sieve with ultrasonic screening technology in production of new 3D-printed trainer New Balance is one of the world’s largest athletic shoe manufacturers. The company aims to bypass conventional industry practices and provides state-ofthe-art products to professional athletes and everyday consumers. One of New Balance’s latest innovations is the addition of an additive manufacturing laboratory; boasting the production of the world’s first laserprinted shoe. The ‘Zante Generate’ is the world’s first running shoe with a 3D-printed midsole. Composed of Duraform® TPU Elastomer, the revolutionary sneaker is made using a laser sintering process. A dual-purpose laboratory used for new product

development and research, the 3D printing facility processes a variety of additive polymers. Initially, New Balance’s laboratory began by processing small-batch work. However, looking to up-scale to larger levels of production, New Balance turned to Russell Finex for a solution. A Russell Compact Sieve® with Vibrasonic ® Deblinding System was the answer. This combination not only fulfils the need to increase throughput, but also ensures the purity of processed powders. Daniel Dempsey, New Balance Senior Additive Manufacturing Engineer, was delighted with the solution - “To sieve 20kg of material using our previous equipment would take approximately eight hours. With the Russell Finex sieve, we can do the same amount in roughly ten minutes.” Now an integral part of New Balance’s 3D additive manufacturing lab, the Russell Compact Sieve® with Vibrasonic® Deblinding System is relied upon every day. For New Balance, using this industrial screener is critical to aerate powders before the material is loaded to a laser sintering machine. Aerating powder increases the flowability of the material, which is required for stable processing of prints running over 24 hours in duration.
SIEVES, SIFTERS, SEPARATORS & SCREENING Aside from increasing flowability, this screener with ultrasonic sieving system has also been credited for freeing time for the additive manufacturing lab’s engineering team as it screens powders much faster than traditional all-day monitored sieves. The addition of the Russell Finex vibratory screener for AM powders has also allowed New Balance to experiment with powder and complete custom batch work in a much quicker fashion. Dempsey continued, “I’ve never had to do a single thing with this machine other than use and clean it. It’s fantastic. The system allows us to speed up the sieving process, and we’ve drastically increased our ability to iterate or prototype within the company due to prototyping the article directly and skipping a couple of rounds of injection moulding before commercialization. If you think about how that affects things like time to market or the product quality, the more iteration you can do the better product you’re going to end up with.” Established in 1934, Russell Finex has over 80 years of experience in working with manufacturing powders. The company, having worked within the 3D printing sector since its beginnings, has built relationships with key equipment manufacturers and end-users, to ensure its separation equipment meets the current and future needs of 3D printing technology. FILTRATION
FILTERMIST INTERNATIONAL ANNOUNCES BUSINESS RESTRUCTURE TO DELIVER SINGLE SOURCE ‘CLEAN AIR’ SOLUTION TO CUSTOMERS Filtermist International Limited has restructured its UK business operations to ensure it delivers a single-source solution for customers looking for cleaner, safer and more productive work environments. The industrial air filtration specialist has completed a number of acquisitions over the past three years, which have significantly expanded its product and service offering in dust extraction equipment, air filtration technology and the latest industrial vacuum cleaning products. In order to strengthen its market position and improve the ‘turnkey’ customer experience, it will merge the current eight businesses into just two - Filtermist International and Filtermist Systems, operating and manufacturing from sites in Telford, Northampton, Wetherby, Dewsbury and Glasgow. In addition to Filtermist oil filters, the company is also responsible for manufacturing a range of product brands, all of which are being retained. These include Dustcheck, Ecogate, Fastclip, Gallito, Kerstar and XS Automation. “This change is part of a strategic, longterm plan we’ve developed to help us grow globally,” explained CEO, James Stansfield. “We are not losing any product brands, merely reorganising how we operate to ensure our customers continue to benefit from the best service possible. “As well as increasing our product portfolio through the brands we have acquired, we have also increased our headcount by more than 300%, giving us a substantial nationwide presence. We wanted to capitalise on this by ensuring our customers can easily access the best knowledge and the best skills that suit their specific requirements. “We have streamlined our operating companies from eight to two - Filtermist International Limited, which will be responsible for manufacturing all of our branded products and Filtermist Systems Limited, which will handle the sales of our products to UK customers. “There has been a major increase in demand for turnkey solutions, where customers can go to one organisation and have all of their requirements met to a high standard. This is exactly what we are doing with this approach - we are a single source solutions provider for 20

clean air in industrial workplaces.” Filtermist International Limited, which celebrates 50 years in business in 2019, has recently invested in a new 30,000 sq ft central distribution and assembly facility, just a few minutes’ walk away from its purpose-built Headquarters on the T54 Business Park in Telford. This will enhance stock control and improve delivery lead times even further, as well as freeing up additional capacity to increase the company’s metal fabrication footprint. The restructuring will also improve group synergies across all of the brands, making the sales and accounts functions far more efficient and delivering even better customer service and product development opportunities for clients. It will give the business a strong platform to scale globally, both through organic growth and further, strategic acquisitions. James concluded: “Filtermist oil mist collectors are very well known in the UK metalworking sector, but the company has expanded so quickly in recent years that our customers may not be fully aware of everything else we now offer. By bringing all of our brands under one umbrella, our sales team can now offer all of our products to all customers, providing a full turnkey solution for ‘clean air’ requirements.” Filtermist is part of the Swedish company Absolent Group, which operates globally through subsidiary companies manufacturing products for collecting oil mist, oil smoke and dust within almost all industrial sectors.

100% reliable and always available,” says David Hannaby, SICK’s UK Product Manager for Presence Detection. “So, we set out on a journey to achieve the best of all worlds in one family. We developed the new operating technologies our customers wanted, as well as bringing together all of SICK’s leading optical sensing capabilities to produce a consistent highflier.” For usability, the W16 and W26 sensors are launched with SICK’s new BluePilot assistant, which features a line of five LEDs mounted on top of the sensor for quick, easy and accurate alignment of the light spot even over long distances. The BluePilot combines a potentiometer and teach-in button to simplify set up, range assessment and application mode selection, and provides a real-time on-sensor status display. Manufactured in new robotic production facility to ensure consistent plug-and-play alignment of every device, SICK W16 and W26 sensors bring together the best of SICK’s optical sensing technologies to meet any detection challenge: SICK’s patented Twin-Eye technology achieves reliable detection for reflective materials such as films, foils, contrast-rich or uneven surfaces. The Twin-Eye’s unique second receiving channel builds in high process stability reducing the risk of false or missed signals due to deflections of the light beam. SICK has incorporated LineSpot linear optics to provide highly-reliable detection where the object has mesh, perforations, integral gaps or breaks. SICK ClearSens optical filter technology makes light work of semi-transparent and transparent objects, such as bottles and plastic trays. Intuitive mode selection on the device make it easy to set up the sensor according to the characteristics of object to be detected. With SICK’s revolutionary OptoFilter

technology onboard, the sensors are immune to interference from unwanted light sources and reflections, including LED lighting, hi-viz safety workwear or reflections from machinery. SICK’s AutoAdapt function means if the reflector or the front screen of the sensor becomes contaminated, the photoelectric sensor automatically adjusts its switching thresholds for reliable detection. An industry-first in-built Bluetooth option allows easy monitoring and advanced commissioning from smart phones or tablets. Smart IO-Link two-way communication is standard on all devices to enable easy set up and parameter cloning of replacement sensors, addressability and diagnostic functions, as well as opportunity to incorporate sensor-level smart tasks
such as counting and time measurement. Every W16 and W26 comes in a robust Vistal housing to withstand all chemical, thermal and mechanical environmental conditions as well shocks and vibrations. The casing is laser-etched with all product identification so that the sensor remains easily identifiable even after years of service. A 2D barcode enables easy identification and access to product manuals via mobile phone.
