SKIP HIRE SPECIALIST ADDS A JCB LOADALL TO ITS FLEET Northern Ireland-based skip hire specialist CM Skips has added a JCB 550-80 Wastemaster Loadall to the fleet of materials handling machinery operating at its site in Randalstown, near Ballymena. The telehandler will play a key role in ensuring CM Skips’ on-site efficiency and throughput targets are met. It will be used to transfer incoming commercial and household waste from tipped skips to a dedicated sortation area where material is sorted in to different recyclable waste streams and non-recyclable waste. The 550-80 then collects sorted material and delivers it to one of a number of dedicated storage bays at the site where waste is kept prior to being loaded – again using the 550-80 - onto one of CM Skips’ contractor partner’s delivery vehicles before being taken away for recycling.

4

Bulk Solids Today

On average, CM Skips recycles 90 per cent of all the waste that arrives at its Randalstown site and the company’s contractors recycle at least 80 per cent of all material that leaves the site. The JCB 550-80 is powered by JCB’s new EcoMAX engine to deliver optimum power and productivity, while the machine’s Wastemaster specification means that it is fitted with extra guarding and protection as well as uprated hydraulics – a factor that had a significant influence on CM Skips’ purchase decision. CM Skips’ director, Nigel McKee, said: ““The day-to-day efficiency of our site relies to a great extent on the performance of our handling machinery so we need equipment that operates at full capacity even in the most arduous conditions. Machines in the JCB Wastemaster range are specifically

tailored to meet the demands of tough waste and recycling centre environments, which means their uptime is optimised.” The 550-80 Loadall benefits from a number of advanced features designed to ensure that the telehandler’s operator is comfortable – and, therefore, productive – throughout even the longest and most demanding shifts. For example, thanks to the 55080’s cleverly packaged driveline and sloping bonnet, visibility is excellent, while, the operator cab itself is one of the largest around, boasting the lowest noise levels; excellent air flow, ventilation and demisting; optional air conditioning; fully adjustable steering column and an optional suspension seat. JCB dealer, Dennison JCB, supplied the new vehicle and will also provide ongoing full maintenance support.

MODU-KLEEN® DOWNDRAFT SERIES DUST COLLECTOR The Modu-Kleen® downdraft dust collector represents the latest dust collector technology developed by Dynamic Air to contain fugitive dust. With the new Modu-Kleen downdraft dust collector, the air enters at the top of the dust collector housing and flows downward to the cartridge filters, improving the filtering process and the materialto-air ratio. Air velocities are much lower than those with a conventional dust collector, reducing the load on each filter cartridge and extending filter life. Cartridge filters are positioned horizontally, requiring less floor space and making filter removal easier.

Personnel never have to enter the filter housing for general maintenance or for cartridge filter removal. This provides a much safer and quicker method of filter removal. For fast and easy inspections, a large, quick-opening door allows maintenance personnel to closely inspect each cartridge when required. In addition, any single cartridge can be removed without disturbing adjacent cartridges. Also, each cartridge filter has a unique built-in quarter turn bayonet mount, so no tools of any kind are required for cartridge removal.

MITCHELLS AND GUTTRIDGE MAINTAIN THEIR QUALITY OF SERVICE BANGLADESH……..a country known for its lush green landscape and numerous waterways, but 15 miles to the east of the capital, Dhaka, is the City Group Economic Zone, which boasts significant manufacturing industries such as water bottling, pharmaceuticals and packaged food. The zone was founded in 1972 and is part of Bangladesh’s successful effort to increase economic wealth in the country. In May this year, two members of Guttridge’s engineering team made the long flight to assist their Mitchell’s colleagues in a dry run commissioning of equipment for an oil seed crushing plant. This was the companies’ first collaboration since the buy-out of Guttridge by Mitchells Group in April 2019. The area is very much East meets West, there are makeshift bamboo scaffolds, held together with ropes, sitting incongruously around the bright blue and yellow modern-day structures. Below the huge silos is the Shitalakshya River, filled with boats and barges transporting goods to and from the city and beyond this, surprisingly close, lie rice fields and shanty towns. The purpose of the visit was to ensure a successful dry run of the machinery that Mitchells had provided and the team at City

Group had installed. The visit that was planned for 4 days only took 2, due to the efficient installation work by City Group engineers. There is no shortage of manpower in the area as over one third of Dhaka’s hardworking population are employed here and take immense pride in their work. The commissioning consisted, in part, of a dry run start up, alignment/tensioning checks and ensuring that there are no unexpected noises coming from pumps and gear boxes. The huge elevator heads, enormous chutes and conveyors fill the building on an industrial

scale, so it was a great outcome to successfully commission the equipment with only on-site fixes required and all issues being rectified during the visit. Our engineers were generously hosted by City Group in their onsite guest house, with opportunities to see the local town and enjoy traditional Bangladeshi cuisine. A successful outcome to the two day trip ensures that Mitchells and Guttridge maintain their quality of service, showing just how easy it is for us to keep your materials moving world-wide. www.guttridge.com

BULK MATERIALS HANDLING

HYSTER® TRUCKS OVERCOME TOUGH TESTS AT SAND-LIME BRICK FACTORY From large quantities of dust, to extreme temperature variations, Hyster® forklift trucks help overcome the tough conditions at Radmacher Kalksandsteine, a sandlime brick production plant in Wendeburg, Germany.

T

he family business has been producing sand-lime bricks using only sand, quicklime and water since 1963. The blocks are hardened in 15-bar pressure autoclaves where more than 60 employees ensure continuous production in a three-shift, around the clock operation. Due to the demands of the application, including a climate that varies from -15°C in Winter to more than 30°C in Summer, the business tested various forklifts thoroughly before selecting new trucks.

“NO STONE IS MOVED WITHOUT A HYSTER® FORKLIFT” The sand-lime bricks are manufactured in standard sizes as well as in varying dimensions dependent on customer requirements and specific building plans. Hyster® trucks ensure a continuous, reliable process, from production to storage of the blocks. “No stone is moved without a Hyster® forklift,” says Christian Baars, Production Manager at the plant, who is especially pleased with two new Hyster® H13XM-6 heavy-duty forklift trucks. These trucks, with a lifting capacity of 13-tonnes and a load centre of 600mm, were acquired after testing several different trucks from well-known manufacturers.

HYSTER® TRUCKS HANDLE SLOPES EASILY While all trucks tested performed well when unloading trolleys and equipping saws, one competitor was unable to deliver the required performance working on the ramp. The heavy forklifts, fully loaded with sand-lime bricks, have to manage a short ramp with a grade of approximately 12 percent. Although some competitor trucks with strong engines managed the ramp, they consumed significantly more fuel than the Hyster® H13XM-6, which is equipped with a powerful six-cylinder Cummins QSB 6.7 litre engine. “The engine power was not the only deciding factor though,” says Hyster Dealer Torsten Franke, Managing Director of GS10

Bulk Solids Today

Gabelstapler Service, in Wolfenbüttel, Germany. “The truck has to be a good overall fit, from the 3-speed ZF hydrodynamic transmission to the transmission ratio.”

HIGH PERFORMANCE WITH LOWER FUEL CONSUMPTION “For us, the high-power reserves and low fuel consumption of the Hyster® H13XM-6 were key,” says Christian Baars. “After all the testing, we put the first forklift into use in our sand-lime brick factory in Uslar, and then ordered another 13-tonne truck, with an S + H stone clamp, to use at the Wendeburg plant.” The state-of-the-art heavy-duty trucks, which comply with Stage IV / Tier 4 final requirements, consume around 20 percent less fuel compared to their predecessors. Good all-round visibility is delivered by the ergonomic Hyster® cab, and further enhanced by the VISTA® mast with external chains and three, instead of four, hydraulic lines. The noise level has also been reduced, enabling the driver to concentrate during the shift. Additionally, the wide chassis and wide drive axle ensure maximum lateral stability when using attachments.

PERSUADED BY THE COOL TRUCK AT HYSTER® HUB The business connection between GS Gabelstapler Service and Radmacher Kalksandsteine has developed over 30 years, with the Hyster® dealer offering advice, fast service and relevant solutions. For example, at the Hyster® HUB in Weeze, Germany, Baars was able to learn first-hand about the latest technologies, such as the Hyster® “Cool Truck”. Based on the H4.0-5.5FT product range, Hyster has developed the Cool Truck especially for use in the dusty

BULK MATERIALS HANDLING conditions found in the paper and recycling industry. The Cool Truck has numerous functions and adaptations to prevent the common problem of the motor overheating due to dust deposits. Hyster® heavy-duty forklift trucks, such as the 13-tonne truck at the stone works, are also designed for use in the toughest operating conditions.

PROTECTION AGAINST DUST AND VARIABLE TEMPERATURES To avoid the problems caused by dust, there is an option to extend the air inlet of the pre-filter. This reduces the amount of polluted air that is sucked in when the standard pre-filter is no longer sufficient. An automatic lubrication function can also be installed to keep dirt out. Drivers also benefit from the Hyster® VISTA Cabin which features an easy-to-clean air filter. Temperature fluctuations pose no problem for Hyster® forklift trucks as they leave the factory in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, ready to withstand operation at temperatures from -18°C to 50°C.

HYSTER® FORKLIFTS PROVIDE UP TO 3,500 OPERATING HOURS PER YEAR Four Hyster® H3.0FT Fortens ICE forklift trucks are used

by Radmacher Kalksandsteine to their maximum performance, reaching up to 3,500 operating hours per year. The trucks are primarily used to transport the sand-lime blocks around the site. Equipped with Superelastic tyres and the maintenancefree Hyster® Stability Mechanism (HSM), which improves side stability, the rugged Hyster® Fortens forklifts support the heavy demands of the operation. Set to the ECO-eLO fuel efficiency mode, these are among the most fuel-efficient forklift trucks available, another deciding factor for Christian Baars. Visit www.hyster.eu for more information.

GREAT BEAR CHOOSE FLEXI FLEET

L

eading third party logistics specialist, Great Bear, has introduced a new fleet of Narrow Aisle Ltd’s Flexi HiMAX articulated forklift trucks at its major multi-user hub at Brackmills in Northampton. A total of six Flexi HiMAX models will operate around-theclock at the facility while a seventh ‘sub-core’ truck has also been supplied on a Service Level Agreement low-hours contract to be used as a ‘stand-by’ truck to cover seasonal peaks in demand and to ensure Great Bear has the ability to operate at 100 per cent fleet availability all-year round. The Flexi HiMAX can operate in aisleways as narrow as 2000mm and its design allows pallet loads to be stacked up to 12 metres high at Great Bear’s Brackmills site. Pallet throughput cycles of 30 per hour are being achieved within the facility’s 70 metre long aisles - which compares very favourably with either guided man-up or traditional reach type trucks. In addition, Narrow Aisle Ltd has supplied its newly launched Easi-Change battery changing and management system at the Brackmills hub. Great Bear’s battery charging bay was completely reconfigured by Narrow Aisle and now just 14 batteries are required to deliver optimal Flexi fleet efficiency 24/7. This means that not only have battery numbers been reduced by 20 per cent but, significantly, overall electricity

consumption within the charge room has been cut by 50 per cent. The Easi-Change system combines the latest battery charging technology with established materials handling techniques. The six-hour high frequency, low energy and low maintenance chargers are all linked to provide fully charged batteries on demand, thereby ensuring that the electricpowered Flexi articulated truck fleet requires the fewest number of battery units to operate at maximum efficiency. Furthermore, because the battery changing process is carried out by just one worker in less than five minutes, truck downtime is minimised Great Bear has acquired the trucks on a five-year inclusive contract rental package that includes all planned maintenance, safety inspections and repairs in one fixed monthly rental charge. www.flexi.co.uk Bulk Solids Today

ON THE COVER

POLYURETHANE PROTECTS MINING EQUIPMENT FROM HIGH IMPACT AND WEAR APPLICATIONS Polyurethane provides greater resistance to shock and wear than rubber or steel, and can be customized to meet unique specifications Mining equipment must withstand some of the toughest abuse in terms of impact and wear due to the harsh environment and long hours of use. When equipment fails, it can bring production to a halt until it is repaired or replaced, which may take days or weeks in remote locations. This can cost tens of thousands of dollars or more if the equipment is required for excavating, hauling, conveying, or processing. The problem is that traditional materials such as rubber and steel – tough as they are – can become damaged or experience severe wear in contact with a variety of sharp or coarse mining materials. Even traditional liners may not sufficiently protect against damage or abrasion. Fortunately, innovative material polyurethane (also commonly called urethane) withstands severe impact, puncture, cutting, tearing, and abrasion. The material also has the ability to change shape under heavy load pressure, then return to its original shape once the load is removed. In fact, urethane provides greater shock and wear resistance than rubber or steel, and can be customized to meet unique specifications. Because of this, urethane is increasingly utilized in a wide range of mining applications such as impactand abrasion-resistant plates, blasting curtains and screens, conveyor liners/skirtings, haul truck bed liners, and OTR tire sidewall protectors for various vehicles.

VEHICLE TIRE PUNCTURE RESISTANCE Urethane is increasingly being used to protect mining vehicle off the road (OTR) tires from sidewall puncture or damage due to exposure to

rocks, debris, uneven road surfaces, and high bank faces, all the while supporting heavy payloads. Because the environment in which heavy-duty mine vehicles operate is severe, even on the toughest of tires, an innovative urethane protector has been developed that reduces the risk of sidewall punctures on OTR tires. A Michigan-based firm, Argonics, which specializes in high-performance, urethane-based elastomers and is one of the largest producers of wear-resistant and customizable urethane products, has developed this sidewall protection. Their sidewall protector uses a proprietary urethane formulation called Kryptane, which was engineered for extreme wear conditions involving impact, abrasion, or sliding. The sidewall protector comprises eight integrated segments that together with a specially designed ring use 32 bolts to apply to a wheel. The entire sidewall protector can be installed in about 15 minutes once the special flange has been installed by certified personnel. If an individual segment is damaged, an operator can replace just that piece saving the cost of replacing the entire shield. Virtually no maintenance is needed other than to retorque the bolts after 15-20 hours of use – much like when installing new tires on a car. Because of its durable properties, the proprietary urethane is also utilized as mining truck bed liners to absorb shock and protect the truck bed from damage and wear. Such liners outlast rubber and steel and install more quickly than AR steel liners.

CONVEYOR ABRASION RESISTANCE Urethane’s outstanding abrasion resistance is often used to combat severe wear in mining conveyors. In such applications, it withstands abrasive ore, sand, and gravel moving through the conveyor, which can cut and abrade both the steel materials inside, as well as typical rubber skirtings outside that are designed to prevent dust and spillage at transfer points. “Rubber is not as abrasion resistant as urethane, and fancy steel liners do not provide sufficient resistance either,” says Charles Pratt, Operations Manager at Kinder Australia, an independent 12

Bulk Solids Today

ON THE COVER supplier and manufacturer of conveyor and bulk material handling equipment. Pratt turned to Kryptane, which has been utilized for some of the toughest mining applications for over 25 years. “In testing for some mining applications, we found that the urethane skirtings on the outside of a conveyor can last 10-15 times longer than rubber,” says Pratt. “Compared to a steel liner on the inside of a conveyor, a urethane liner can get 5-8 times the life.” Since the urethane has a 60% lower coefficient of friction than rubber, this also means less wear on the liner when the load is discharged as well as less carryback material remaining in the bed.

MATERIAL HANDLING EQUIPMENT THAT WITHSTANDS EXTREME WEAR Mine and quarry bulk handling equipment – such as batchers, bins, chutes, drums, hoppers, turn-heads, dump cones, and belt cleaners – can experience severe wear in contact with a variety of coarse materials, particularly at “hot spots” where excessive abrasion occurs. In such cases, the bare structure of the equipment may not be adequately wear resistant and even traditional steel or rubber protective liners may insufficiently control the abrasion. This can pose a risk of costly spillage through holes and gaps, along with production downtime for repair and clean up. For such applications, sheets made from urethane provide far better wear resistance than more traditional options such as rubber or steel (both AR400 and AR450 plate). Because urethanes also offer significantly less friction than rubber, this not only helps to reduce wear in contact with rough materials, but also improves equipment cleanability, which enhances productivity. This “tougher than steel” liner can be made even more durable with embedded ceramic tiles. It can also be cut from full sheets of various sizes to fit the contours and shapes of high contact areas, so it can easily be welded or bolted to provide extreme wear protection wherever it is required. Urethane with embedded ceramics can be optimized to resist not only sliding abrasion, but also impact, or various combinations of the two. This approach can last up to 10 times longer than steel or rubber alone, and up to 4 times longer than urethane alone. While urethane liners can be cut to fit and installed onsite, custom liners made to fit more complex configurations can increase reliability, simplify installation, and further reduce production downtime.

ADAPTABLE PROPERTIES TAILORED TO THE APPLICATION Because urethane’s properties are customizable over wide ranges of hardness, resilience, spring rate and dynamic

properties, its versatility offers custom mining solutions to difficult design challenges. “Urethane, even in relatively small quantity production, can be adapted and tailored to prioritize the physical properties that mine operators and design engineers need,” says Fred Boyle, senior process engineer at Argonics. Hardness, for instance, is readily adaptable. While most rubbers have a hardness that is typically found between 30 and 80 on the Shore A scale, and structural plastics begin at 55 on the D scale, some urethanes bridge the rubber-plastic hardness range. One proprietary urethane, for instance, offers a wide range of formulations from a 52 shore A to a 70 Shore D to suit a variety of applications. According to Boyle, urethane is also often used to provide a high degree of resilience. This can be done over a long, slow extension or a very quick impact. The material can also be formulated to dissipate the maximum amount of energy, when it is necessary to cushion an object. As such, Kinder Australia’s Pratt looked to a proprietary urethane when a unique combination of attributes was required for mining applications to optimize conveyor skirting so it would not prematurely wear the conveyor belt if rubbed against it. “Argonics was able to formulate a conveyor skirting material that was not only abrasion resistant, but also soft and slippery to minimize any potential conveyor belt wear,” says Pratt. “The urethane is very customizable. For applications such as coal mining, you can also make it resistant to fire and temperature as well as anti-static.” While mine operators are accustomed to traditional materials like rubber and steel, utilizing the superior qualities of urethane for a variety of applications ranging from OTR tire protectors to liners will help to improve safety, productivity, and profit while significantly reducing downtime and premature replacement. EATON’S CMA VALVES DELIVER PRECISE STEERING CONTROL TO FOUR-WAY SIDELOADERS Eaton announces delivery of a valve system to Bulmor GmbH, a leading manufacturer of sideloaders. By specifying Eaton CMA Advanced Mobile Valve with Independent Metering in its new series of four-way sideloader forklifts, the company achieved far superior steering control over earlier systems. For its latest four-way sideloader, which offers customized height and width to help maximize storage capacity, Bulmor sought an electrohydraulic mobile valve capable of overcoming a number of challenges. A key functional requirement was for precise control of the four independently steered drive wheels under various load conditions. As well as safe and smooth load control, the four-way sideloader features a mast shift function that can sometimes suffer from an overrunning condition where load inertia takes over control. Along with this challenge, Bulmor also wanted to reduce energy consumption of the overall machine. The answer arrived in the form of an Eaton seven-bank variable-inlet CMA090 valve, which is configured with Eaton’s Pro-FX® Configure software plus a DPS2-12 differential pressure valve. Chosen for its product performance and flexibility, the advanced CMA mobile valve with independent metering offers a sophisticated technology platform that streamlines and simplifies everything from design and set-up to operation and optimization. “All four wheels must follow a given steering algorithm without any delay or variance, regardless of load conditions,” Bulmor’s Thomas Goesweiner explains. “Here, the CMA valve’s flow control is providing the best steering performance we’ve ever achieved.” The CMA’s integral flow share feature with priority selection for the steering system also eliminates the need for a remote priority valve. In cases where the supply flow is less than that required by the sideloader, this feature ensures power on demand to the steering system. System architecture is further simplified as the single spool operation for the single-acting cylinder reduces the number of valve banks; two banks are effectively combined into one. Eaton’s CMA valve also addresses the challenge of overrunning conditions, whereby the direction of the desired velocity is in the same direction as external forces that can cause loss of load control and unsafe operation, typically during downhill operation or vehicle braking. While most applications use various conventional valves to create the opposing hydraulic force, the CMA valve system applies a load differential calculation to determine if the direction of load is the same or opposite direction as the desired velocity. Through port pressures and the areas on each side of the actuator, CMA valves can 14

assign the load differential to be either passive or overrunning. For the latter, the control applies a meterout strategy and will hold constant pressure on the upstream port. Regarding efficiency, the CMA valve system continuously monitors the flow balance at the inlet port of the valve set, along with the pressure and temperature of the oil. The valve then controls and modulates the pressure governed by the DPS2 regulator valve with varying logic, thereby reducing the flow margin applied to the sideloader‘s variable-speed pump. Additionally, as the power loss of a priority valve has been eliminated by the integral flowshare feature, CMA valves effectively reduce any wasted energy. The reduction of power losses allows a longer operating time or more load cycles with a single battery charge; the sideloader rarely has to go to the charging station. Furthermore, the lower power requirement reduces the thermal load on the electric drive of the hydraulic pump. This leads to lower operating temperatures of the electrical components; interruption due to high temperatures can be avoided, resulting in higher efficiency and productivity. During field tests, Bulmor measured energy consumption across the machine. The engineering team found that the current draw of the steering system, when compared to earlier systems, had dropped significantly from 300 to 150 amps. The company also calculated a 30 to 40 percent improvement in efficiency - in essence, the less power loss, the longer the machine can remain operational between charges, which maximizes productivity and uptime. Using Eaton’s Pro-FX® technology platform, common application functions can be enabled right on the valve, reducing development time. With electronic tuning, performance parameters can be tested and optimized in seconds, not months, which is a genuine industry differentiator. The CMA valve is the only one of its kind, where it is possible to set system parameters from a laptop, vehicle app or other input device. What is more, advanced control algorithms mean these valves automatically optimize for conditions such as oscillation and vibration, improving control and reducing risk. Aside from forklifts, common applications for CMA valves include concrete pump trucks, refuse trucks, telehandlers, all-terrain cranes, utility trucks, grapples, aerial lifts, drill rigs, excavators, roof bolters, snow groomers, paving machines, reach stackers and more. MIXERS, BLENDERS & DRYERS

EFFICIENT DEHUMIDIFICATION AND MIXING FOR THE PRODUCTION OF NATURAL FIBER COMPOUNDS At the K2019 trade show staged in Dusseldorf, Germany from October 16 - 23, 2019, MTI Mischtechnik, a technology and quality leader in the manufacture of mixing and processing machines, will present its current portfolio of container-type, vertical, horizontal, cooling, and heating/cooling mixers for the plastics industry. One highlight at the company’s booth B22 in Hall 9 will be an MTI Flex®-line heating/cooling mixer combination, which, together with a Vent tec® 2.0 aspiration system, has been optimized for the production of dry blends for natural fiber compounds (NFC). Designed as a modular system, the mixers of the MTI Flex®-line series can generally be used for almost any application because the sizes, drives and equipment options can be individually configured. In the M 1000 / K 3300 size shown at K2019, the mixing system comes with a heating mixer volume of 1,101 liters and a cooling mixer volume of 3,308 liters for typical batch sizes of 400 kg and an hourly throughput of over 1,600 kg. It is part of a series of machines that will be delivered to an Asian NFCprocessing company after the show. The performance of the associated Vent tec® 2.0 mixer aspiration system is matched to the intended NFC application. Unlike conventional solutions, these devices control their operation autonomously as a function of actual process parameters, thereby providing constant processing conditions irrespective of changes in process and ambient conditions. They achieve this by 18

Bulk Solids Today

continuously monitoring all actual operating conditions via key parameters such as intake air and system air temperatures, air pressure, humidity and, with high significance, the aspiration air flow rate. Their electronic controller continuously analyzes these variables and adjusts the aspiration system accordingly with due regard to filter status, so maintaining constant venting airflow conditions. As a result, even under unfavorable conditions when processing natural fibers with fluctuating but relatively high moisture contents, it ensures highly efficient dehumidification of the blend, thus enabling constant process conditions and consistently high product quality. Thanks to the high drying efficiency, the required preparation times, depending on the raw material moisture content, are usually less than 15 minutes. In addition to dry blends for natural fiber compounds, the main applications of such mixer-aspiration combinations include the production of almost completely dehumidified rigid and soft PVC dry blends as well as thermal processes where Vent tec® 2.0 devices serve to dehumidify the mixture and/or to reduce volatiles content. Especially with PVC formulations containing hygroscopic stabilizer systems, they reliably prevent the formation of deposits on the interior surfaces of heating mixers, cooling mixer walls and extruder dies, as well as in calibration devices. In this way, they ensure consistent mixing quality while simultaneously preventing extruder problems and fluctuations in the final product.

This open line of communication has led to many design improvements and new product developments – and allows our client-focused design philosophy to take shape. What We Do Innovators & Experts in Handling Dry Bulk Solids Selecting the right piece of equipment is critical to the success of any dry bulk material handling system. Misapplied components and deficient designs add unexpected costs and processing inefficiencies. The characteristics of dry bulk solids are endless, so there is no all-encompassing solution for every application. With more than 300 years of combined experience in the dry bulk handling industry, our application engineering knowledge is unprecedented. We have delivered solutions to a wide range of industries handling thousands of dry solid types, from fine powders to heavy ore. If the material is dry, there is a high probability Vortex has handled it. Design Philosophy Vortex components improve process efficiency, ensure dust-free environments, and establish longterm reliability. This is made possible through a design philosophy which integrates application engineering with specialized product design: Compensate for Wear Vortex has closely studied the characteristics of thousands of dry bulk materials and how they interact with various materials of construction. From those studies, we take pride in “designing for purpose,” rather than producing standardized, off-the-self components. We assess the wear potential for each client’s process

and make application-specific modifications to ensure reliability, durability and longevity – so that end users enjoy the full value of their investment. Minimal Spare Parts Vortex approaches wear parts design with a philosophy of its own: “Design simple parts which can be easily accessed while the equipment remains in-line. Parts must also be designed for durability and longevity, so that wear part maintenance is infrequent.” By designing simple parts, the maintenance procedures are also kept simple. By designing durable and long-lasting parts, the need to perform maintenance is infrequent and spare part inventories are reduced – which means a reduction in costs. For these reasons, spare parts account for less than 4% of Vortex sales. Maintenance Friendly Our priority is to keep you up and running – because in your world, there is no time for downtime. That’s why each Vortex product is designed with in-line maintenance feature(s), so that the maintenance process is accelerated and your maintenance team saves time; therefore, saving you money. Long Service Life End users are often attracted to equipment on the fallacy of low price. While this may be true on paper, there is a cost-benefit to reliability and longevity. Vortex believes in designing only value-added products – not standardized, commodity equipment. With an in-house team of engineers, Vortex designs equipment for even the most demanding applications. The result? – A product that will out-perform and outlast components found on the market today. For product information and technical resources, please visit www.vortexglobal.com.
