UNIQUE MICRON ANGLE DISINTEGRATOR OFFERS FIVE-A-DAY PROCESSING

H

osokawa Micron’s unique Angle Disintegrator, with 5-a day, streamlined processing options is helping manufacturers of soups, purées, sauces and dressings meet the market demand for increasingly authentic and quality fruit, vegetable purées and demand for the flavours of exotic and often difficult to handle spices and fruits. This multi-tasking machine offers 5 different processing options in one machine: pulping or blending; coarse or fine purée; hot or cold ingredients; wet or dry ingredients and rejection of unwanted plant matter or injection of water, steam or inert gas. By eliminating peeling and chopping operations and by continuously removing unwanted fibres, skin particles and seeds to produce an homogenous, puréed product processing steps and product handling are reduced to deliver a higher quality, fine textured, end product.

Garlic, root ginger, tomatoes, onions, oranges and vanilla pods can all be pulped and puréed using the Micron Angle Disintegrator with reject material ejected through a secondary outlet to leave a pristine, homogenous purée. Selection of coarse to fine end product are easily achieved by the changing of removable screens. Capable of handling dry or soaked ingredients the Angle Disintegrator is equipped with a water injection system making it suitable for continuous mixing and blending – the option to inject steam or inert gas during operation is also possible. With a capacity to handle up to 3000kg/hour of either wet or dry, hot or cold products the hygienic construction enables fast product changeover without cross contamination.

TRANSFORMING SOLUTIONS FROM ALLU AT BAUMA CHINA

T

he exciting capabilities of the ALLU range of Processors and Transformers will be shown at bauma China 2018. As the largest trade show in Asia, ALLU will show at first-hand how its equipment can help construction companies maximise their business, whatever the application. Held this year from the 27 – 30 November, bauma China is Asia’s largest and most important international trade fair aimed at the requirements of Asia’s construction industry. Encompassing construction machinery and vehicles, building material and mining equipment, the show takes place in Shanghai every two years. With over 300,000 m² of exhibition space (indoor space: 200,000 m², outdoor area: 100,000 m²), 2,958 exhibitors from 41 countries will exhibit to more than 170,000 visitors from 149 countries. As such an important trade show, ALLU will reaffirm its commitment to the Chinese and Asian markets by exhibiting a cross section of its Processor and Transformer technology. THE IDEAL SOLUTION FOR CONSTRUCTION The ALLU Transformer Series will be a significant part of the ALLU offering at bauma China. This comprises of an excavator/ loader/ tractor mounted processing bucket which screens, pulverizes, aerates, blends, mixes, separates, crushes, feeds and loads materials. This results in the feed material being effectively transformed into highly valuable products, making any business more efficient, and more profitable. Catering for applications of all sizes, and capable of processing any material that can be screened and sorted, the ALLU Transformer Series comprises of the compact DL & D Series as well as the truly massive M and G Series. All are designed to transform the way in which material handling and processing businesses are able to improve their efficiency and profitability. The latter have 10

Bulk Solids Today

proved themselves on truly massive quarrying and surface mining applications throughout the world, being designed for use by excavators up to 300 tonnes. The ALLU Transformer, whatever its size and configuration, is ideal for processing concrete, waste, soil, sand, rocks and minerals as it also aerates, as well as screening, loading and processing, all of which can be carried out on site. This truly mobile solution provides the versatility and flexibility to enable work to be accomplished more efficiently even in the most challenging environments. This results in substantial savings in material and transport costs, as no time is lost when waiting for replacement material. Additionally, binders can be mixed if the material handling includes additive requirements or stabilization. ALLU PROCESSOR Also featuring at bauma China will be the ALLU Processor. This is a hydraulic power mixer attachment which converts any excavator into a powerful and versatile mixing tool capable of penetrating and effectively mixing a variety of difficult materials. Such materials suited for the attachment range from clay, silt, peat, sludge and sediment, to dredged material and contaminated soil. INTRODUCING THE ALLU PROCESSOR 300 HD Working to a depth of 3m, and with a weight of 2,095kg (+400 kg fabricated mount plate), the Processor 300 HD is designed to be durable. It’s made from wear resistant steel, with a stem that’s engineered to be strong, streamlined and lightweight. Fitted to, and powered by the excavator’s hydraulic system, and benefitting from its ability to reach difficult or soft areas, the Processor 300 HD is able to mix materials everywhere the excavator goes. This means that binders or chemical agents can be delivered to the area of the highest mixing shear

by an attached 80mm diameter pipe, and injected via a nozzle located between the mixing drums. MORE POWER TO THE OPERATOR - 500HD As with its smaller sibling the 300 HD, the Processor 500 HD is both durable and strong. It differs from the smaller 300 HD by being even bigger and by being able to work to a depth of 5m with a weight of 2,445 kg (+400 kg fabricated mount plate). Despite its strength, the wear resistant steel stem is both nimble and streamlined, and is again powered by the excavator’s hydraulic system. It is able to reach difficult or soft areas, meaning that the Processor 500 HD can mix materials everywhere the excavator goes, with binders or chemical agents being delivered to the area of the highest mixing shear by an attached 80mm diameter pipe. Both Processors’ are equipped with automatic torque adjustment valves located between the two hydraulic motors, with drum rpm and temperature sensors, as well as sensors for oil leakage detection located inside the frame construction. The excavator operator controls the rotational direction of the drums to adjust for most effective mixing. A 2m extension tube is also available for both models as option for added working depth. In effect both ALLU Processors provide a variety of uses, as they essentially reach, mix and process whether the material is wet or dry. This has made them ideal in constructing temporary roads, solidification and soil remediation projects, dealing with contaminated soil, excavation and pipeline works, as well as oil ponds and sand acid tar. The ALLU stand will be located at: A19 www.allu.net

IS YOUR BUSINESS BREXIT READY? IMHX 2019’s sponsor, Investec, is well placed to support the UK materials handling industry through Brexit

D

espite the gloomy forecasts since the Brexit referendum, the UK has seen a continuation, and in many cases, growth in business levels in certain sectors. Investec’s Andrew Woodward believes that while UK businesses need to be mindful of the bigger picture and take steps to protect themselves from risks such as FX and importing tariffs, leaders must Andrew Woodward continue to focus on the specifics of their particular businesses. “The materials handling industry is a good bellwether for the economy and in particular the confidence at any given time due to the fact it covers so many sectors from manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, wholesaling, retailing amongst many others,” he says. He continues: “Our job at Investec Materials Handling is to ensure there is a viable funding option to facilitate the rental and hire of materials handling equipment throughout these ups and downs. We will consistently work to offer finance facilities that reflect the needs of both end users and suppliers – and that means being innovative. “For example, we’re working on things like low start rental profiles, subsidised finance rates via supplier relationships, seasonal payment profiles to suit the needs of the end user’s business requirements, deferred VAT for HP agreements and stage payments. In fact, we’ve completed agreements that have involved each of those in the last 12 months. “We have a specialist team with long established relationships and

industry knowledge, and we’ve now provided more than £275m in finance since we launched in January 2014. We are thoroughly committed to supporting our clients no matter what events unfold over the year ahead.” One of the ways in which the uncertainty over Brexit has manifested itself is in the state of the national currency. Volatility has been steepening over the past few months as the market wakes up to the prospect of a messy exit. “In some ways, the past couple of months have been a return of 2016 in the lead up to the UK referendum,” says Investec’s Jonathan Pryor. He continues: “Things will remain interesting – or complex – particularly if we head towards a ‘no-deal’ Brexit. “Some of the shock is being priced in. The options market, which can serve the barometer for how market participants are viewing the likelihood of volatile world and market events, has caught on to the tornado of comment surrounding the circumstances of the UK’s exit from the EU.” So what can those in business with currency exposures do to sleep easier at night? “Internal factors can be controlled, such as budget costs, currency forecasts and the general logistics of Brexit

planning,” says Jonathan Pryor. He goes on: “Externally, though, we are working with clients to come up with solutions that can guide them through any event risk in a cost-effective way and allow plenty of flexibility for their foreign exchange requirements and for their business over the coming months. “Many of our corporate clients are now making use of what’s called vanilla options to shelter them from the collateral damage of a breakdown in negotiations. In effect, these options act as a proxy insurance policy to a collapse in sterling, giving businesses the option – but not the requirement – to access currency at a given rate. “Such a flexible approach requires the expertise and resource of banking partners who understand your business and objectives. This is and will be vital to navigating your business through choppy markets and political instability. “There is a feeling of déjà vu around Brexit and heightened market anxiety but while politicians may dither, at least you can take a proactive step to mitigate currency risk for your business.” Investec Asset Finance plc is sponsor of IMHX 2019 – the International Materials Handling Exhibition. The event takes place at the NEC, Birmingham, on 24th-27th September 2019. www.imhx.net Bulk Solids Today

GAS VALVE MANUFACTURER BRYAN DONKIN VALVES CELEBRATES 250TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION PIONEER, INVENTOR AND COMPANY FOUNDER

C

hesterfield-based gas valve manufacturer, Bryan Donkin Valves Limited, part of the global AVK Group of Companies, has celebrated the 250th anniversary of the birth of its founder, Bryan Donkin, with the unveiling of a specially-commissioned painting depicting many of his inventions alongside products developed by the company he founded in 1802. Born on 22 March 1768, Bryan Donkin FRS FRAS was a leading pioneer in the industrial revolution, inventing the paper-making machine and the tin can. He was also an engineering partner of other illustrious pioneers including Brunel, Telford and Babbage. Donkin also invented the steel pen nib and, so fundamental to the company that still bears his name, the gas valve. The Bryan Donkin Company he founded now has a global presence, with sister companies as far afield as AVK Polska in Poland and Syntec in China. The commemorative painting, by local artist Lily Hammond, was unveiled at AVK’s flagship gas valve facility in Staveley, East Derbyshire by Richard Donkin, great-great-great grandson of Bryan Donkin and by Lily herself. Paul Hubbard, Chairman of the AVK UK Companies, then presented the Bryan Donkin Archive Trust with a cheque to fund the restoration of Bryan Donkin’s grave in Nunhead cemetery, South London. Paul Hubbard said: “We are celebrating a true pioneer who accomplished so much in his lifetime and whose products and inventions continue to benefit the world. Where would we be without the tin can? Or the paper-making machine? “Moreover, where would I and my colleagues be had this great man not invented the gas valve that is still in use in multiple forms around the globe? “Our links with Bryan Donkin’s family have continued down the centuries and we are delighted to welcome them to Staveley where they can see the international legacy of their forebear’s achievements. We continue to benefit from the reputation and prestige of the Bryan Donkin name as a by-word for engineering prowess and invention.” Richard Donkin said: “The Donkin family is proud of what my great-great-great grandfather achieved. He sat at the top table with others who genuinely changed the world for the better. JACOBS INTRODUCES 2-STEP VARIABLE VALVE ACTUATION SYSTEM TO ENHANCE ENGINE PERFORMANCE AND EFFICIENCY Jacobs Vehicle Systems®, the world’s leading manufacturer of heavyduty diesel engine retarding systems and valve actuation mechanisms, has launched a new 2-Step Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) system. By enhancing performance and efficiency across an engine’s operating range, 2-Step VVA will help engine manufacturers further improve fuel consumption and reduce tailpipe emissions, as well as deliver a range of other benefits.

T

he introduction of 2-Step VVA is a progression from Jacobs’ fully-flexible VVA intake and exhaust system, which has given major engine manufacturers more than two decades of reliable service. The new system’s relative simplicity reflects years of research and development on flexible VVA to yield an optimized two-position system that provides a large portion of the benefits in a more cost-efficient way. 2-Step VVA provides the combustion engineer with the ability to optimize valve timing at two operating points instead of the traditional singletiming option when they are driven from a fixed cam. Steve Ernest, Vice President of Engineering and Business Development, said: “By simplifying 14

our variable valve technology, we have made a commercially desirable trade-off, only slightly reducing some of the performance benefits of fully-flexible VVA but greatly reducing calibration complexity and cost. Jacobs offers tailored solutions based around an individual customer’s engine architecture and the problems they are looking to solve. We’re giving engine designers the ability to add some VVA flexibility without having to make significant base-engine changes.” Jacobs has many years’ experience of opening and closing valves to enable engine braking. As market demand grew for increased fuel economy and exhaust gas aftertreatment control, it was a logical

VALVES

progression for Jacobs, both in engineering expertise and commercial positioning, to also offer customers similar valvetrain flexibility during positive power. MANY SMALL BUT CUMULATIVELYSIGNIFICANT PERFORMANCE BENEFITS Thousands of hours of successful engine testing, on the bench and in vehicles, have shown the benefits of 2-Step VVA. Early or late intake valve closing reduces fuel consumption, optimizes compression ratio versus load, improves transient response and start-up, and improves emissions by keeping the aftertreatment system hot during low load operation. Early exhaust valve opening enables faster warm-up of the engine and aftertreatment system, improves transient turbocharger response and emissions by keeping the aftertreatment system hot during low load operation. It can also be an incylinder solution for helping with diesel particulate filter regeneration by replacing expensive and low-reliability exhaust heaters and dosers. Internal exhaust gas recirculation stabilizes cold start-up combustion, shortens engine warmup time, improves aftertreatment performance, and lowers emissions by keeping the aftertreatment system hot during low load operation. This system is available in both exhaust or intake valve opening variants, responds faster than external exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems, and enables the downsizing or elimination of external EGR systems. IN MORE TECHNICAL DETAIL: 2 STEP VVA SYSTEMS • Early intake valve closing is achieved by operating on an early closing profile main event with the auxiliary valve motion (normal closing) deactivated. • Late intake valve closing is achieved with a lateclosing cam profile activated on the auxiliary rocker arm to hold the valve open longer. • Both early and late 2-Position VVA systems have mechanical start-up without oil pressure. • Early exhaust valve opening is achieved with an early-opening cam profile on the auxiliary rocker arm, or lost motion system, and actuated on demand with engine oil. • Auxiliary events for internal exhaust gas recirculation and compression release braking are conveyed in the same manner as intake or exhaust 2-Position VVA systems. • Cylinder deactivation is also possible through the use of Jacobs’ Lost Motion Valve Bridge technology. www.jacobsvehiclesystems.com

MITSUBISHI LAUNCHES ITS MOST INTELLIGENT AND AGILE ELECTRIC TRUCK YET Building on the success of its popular 80volt, EDiA EX, Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks has announced the latest addition to its award-winning electric range: EDiA EM.

T

he most intelligent and agile truck in its class, this range of 1.4 to 2.0 tonne 48-volt electrics is also one of the most durable. Packed with features, it has been engineered to deliver all the manoeuvrability, power (performance) and reliability expected from a Mitsubishi lift truck. In short, it offers a true alternative to traditional IC engine trucks. IN TUNE WITH DRIVERS Designed and engineered to perform, the class-leading range works intuitively: tailoring the truck’s performance to the individual operator’s. EDiA EM’s sophisticated software examines and analyses real-use data – automatically adjusting the truck’s parameters for operations that are safe and productive. For drivers, this means that – regardless of load weight – they can expect the same, predictable response. Every model benefits from the Mitsubishi SDS (Sensitive Drive System). It automatically smooths start and stop movements, increases agility and adapts the truck’s performance to the speed of the driver’s foot movements – eliminating In addition, EDiA EM benefits from Intelligent Curve Control as standard. Sensing the angle of a turn, ICC responds automatically by seamlessly reducing speed very early in the manoeuvre – for maximum stability and accurate, positive cornering. EDiA EM it is the most agile, thanks to its >100º steering axle and dual drive motors. These provide smooth on-the-spot turning – without the initial tyre ‘push’ which can quickly wear down tyres. HIGH VISIBILITY Safety was a top priority for the EDiA EM’s designers. By thinking ‘outside of the box’, the team was able to successfully maximise visibility. While a low, counterweight design ensures good rear vision, forward views to the fork tips benefit from a number of simple, but often ingenious changes. In the fully adjustable operator compartment, for example, forward vision is free of obstacles, thanks to 18

Bulk Solids Today

its low-profile narrow bulkhead dashboard and small, featherweight steering wheel. In addition, designers have improved visibility through triplex masts with a clever mast redesign. Uniquely, the EDiA EM mast incorporates closecoupled hoses to widen the view for operators. Responsive, highlyergonomic controls, improved legroom, and a low-noise design all work to minimise operator fatigue – thereby minimising the chance of costly accidents. FOR THE DRIVER In busy operations every second counts. That is why the 3-wheel model of the EDiA EM series can be specified with 360-degree steering — as found in the popular Mitsubishi reach trucks — allowing the driver to reverse directions smoothly, precisely and — most importantly — without stopping. Not only can this speed up turn times and maximise productivity in tight spaces — even in containers — but it can greatly reduce the amount of centrifugal force acting upon a load, which could otherwise cause unsteady loads to fall. With state-of-the-art curve control stabilising the truck on turns and the Passive Sway Control system minimising sway action in higher lifts, EDiA EM is constantly working to make the operator’s work as safe, efficient, and predictable as possible. www.mitforklift.com

MICHELIN X WORKS TYRE TRIAL HIGHLIGHTS HUGE SAVINGS FOR SHIRE AGGREGATES

S

hire Aggregates has specified Michelin tyres as original equipment across 12 new MAN 32-tonne 8x4 tippers and adopted a Michelin policy as standard for future tyre purchases after a trial set of Michelin X Works tyres demonstrated it could save more than £26,000 a year in running costs. The results, based on each 8x4 rigid tipper travelling around 75,000 km a year, showed with Michelin, the Catterick-based firm would save £17,892 thanks to an average increase in tyre life from nine to 22 months after switching to a premium Michelin policy. Shire Aggregates also projects a saving of £7,600 in breakdown costs thanks to a dramatic reduction in punctures and blowouts versus current fleet records – with just one repairable puncture recorded during the twoyear trial. The switch to Michelin will also deliver tangible sustainability improvements, with Shire Aggregates fitting significantly fewer new tyres than before – reducing its raw material usage and helping to protect the environment. Jonathan Simpson, Shire Aggregates’ Managing Director, says: “Being able to see the quantitative results in front of us was eye-opening, as before we weren’t aware of just how much we could be saving. “We’ve never had a tyre policy in place and have only ever specified the occasional Michelin tyre. This trial showed us the importance of having a robust and reliable tyre, as the savings versus a budget policy are huge, both in the efficiency of our fleet and the overall running costs. It’s really highlighted to us that buying cheaper tyres is a false economy in the long run.” Following on from the impressive trial results, the 12 new MAN tippers were ordered and specified with Michelin X Works tyres as original equipment. The customer plans to run them through a full Michelin multi-life policy, fitting Michelin Remix tyres as replacements once worn. Mr Simpson adds: “This is a considerable step for us as a business. We have never specified our entire fleet with just one brand of tyre, but the trial set demonstrated excellent traction and grip on wet roads, and gave the driver more confidence in the vehicle’s ability to handle rough terrain and winter conditions. – it proved our decision to specify Michelin was the right move.” The Michelin X Works range is designed for operators who do most of their mileage on roads, but need traction and robustness on rough tracks and construction sites for deliveries. Key to their exceptional performance is the use

of the most advanced Michelin technology, including Powercoil, a new generation of robust steel casing cables which help to make each tyre lighter yet more robust, leading to better endurance and reduced rolling resistance. Michelin X Works drive tyres also feature specially designed Z-sipes that increase the traction on road in winter conditions, especially in snow, allowing them to attain 3PMSF certification. SIEVES, SIFTERS, SEPARATORS & SCREENING

MAGNETIC SEPARATOR AUDIT FOR JORDANS DORSET RYVITA Bunting engineers have conducted a thorough review of all the Magnetic Separators installed at the Jordans Dorset Ryvita plant in Poole, Dorset. The audit was completed over three days, including attending site on Saturday to prevent any loss in production.

B

unting Magnetics is one of the world’s leading suppliers of Magnetic Separators and Metal Detectors. The European manufacturing headquarters are based in Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire, UK and they have an extensive overseas network of distributors and marketing agents. Jordans Dorset Ryvita has a strong heritage of making whole grain foods and working with farmers to protect the countryside. Ever since the brands first came together, they have continued to act on these values. A Magnetic Separation Audit involves the inspection and test of Magnetic Separators to confirm their magnetic and physical integrity. Commonly, such tests are conducted annually, with the final report forming part of the company’s quality audit process. The tests in a Magnetic Separator Audit are conducted in two stages. Stage one involved the inspection of the physical integrity of the Magnetic Separator. This includes checking welds, and assessing any wear and damage to the surface. Stage two involves testing the magnetic strength of the Magnetic Separator. These tests are conducted by placed a magnetic ball or plate into the magnetic field and then measuring the force (in kgs) needed to remove that object from the surface of the magnetic separator. The actual ‘gauss’ reading of a Magnetic Separator is not checked as measurement is difficult and often inaccurate. Gauss is the is the cgs unit of measurement of magnetic flux density or “magnetic induction”, but can be difficult to measure accurately. The metal test piece is attached to the end of the Spring Balance and then placed into the magnetic field, being attracted to the magnetic pole. The metal test piece is then pulled off the surface of the magnetic separator whilst holding the other end of the spring 20

balance. The amount of force needed to remove the metal test piece from the surface is recorded (in kgs). The test is repeated three times and an average reading taken. Similar techniques are used to test other designs of Magnetic Separators such as Plate Magnets. There were a wide range of designs, strengths and ages of Magnetic Separators in the production process at Jordans Dorset Ryvita. The company had not experienced any problems due to metal contamination and requested the audit as part of their continued improvement plan. Day one was spent assessing the location and recording the customer identity numbers of all the Magnetic Separators. Checking the location also highlighted any health and safety issues that needed to be considered for the audit, such as working at heights. The review identified 52 Magnetic Separators.

SIEVES, SIFTERS, SEPARATORS & SCREENING The physical checks of the Magnetic Separators were conducted on day two and three, on the weekend to minimise any production downtime. Each Magnetic Separator was removed from its location and visually inspected. Then the magnetic strength was checked using the pull test technique. The data was recorded and presented in a detailed report with recommendations following the audit. This report can then be used as part of the quality management system. It also provides base data for comparison on future audits. Following the audit, the engineering team at Jordans Dorset Ryvita have made several changes to improve the removal of metal during the production process. “Having an external review of the Magnetic Separators really helps the client,” explained Mark Harris, Bunting’s Engineer. “We conducted the audit without any assumptions and this freedom enabled us to highlight the areas where protection was good and also focus attention where they

could be improvements. We are looking forward to working with the team at Jordans Dorset Ryvita for the long-term and providing our technical support when needed.” www.buntingeurope.com

CONTROLS & INSTRUMENTATION

SIMPLIFYING MOISTURE MEASUREMENT TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY AND PROFITABILITY OF GRAINS AND SEEDS Instantaneous handheld analyzers that can be operated by virtually anyone deliver lab-quality moisture readings

W

hen growing, harvesting, buying/selling, processing, and preparing grains, seeds, and other small agricultural products, moisture is one of the most important variables to control. In addition to the quality of the final product, moisture levels completely predict shelf life, product stability, appearance and, of course, price and profitability. Until recently, however, conducting frequent moisture content tests in the field has been difficult. In many cases, the primary barrier has been the time and expertise required to conduct such tests. Often samples must be brought to centralized locations and require meticulous sample preparation. Sophisticated moisture measurement devices must also be operated by trained personnel that can properly calibrate the equipment. Fortunately, handheld devices are now available that allow virtually anyone to take essentially lab-quality moisture measurements. These options allow instant readings to be taken in the fields; during post-harvest processing; at auctions and grain elevators; on top of trucks, rail cars, and storage totes; as well as at receiving stations or any stage of blending or food processing. THE BENEFITS OF FREQUENT MOISTURE READINGS Although the reasons for measuring the moisture content of grains and seeds can vary, the primary motivation is to improve product quality and the bottom line. For farmers, quickly measuring samples in fields to determine which are ready to harvest reduces uncertainty and saves time. It also reduces the risk of buyer rejection due to improper moisture content, and maximizes the sales price by enabling the optimum amount of moisture to be counted toward product weight or volume. Proper post-harvest processing is vital to maximize yield, vigor, longevity and seed crop quality. At maturity, seed must be harvested, threshed, cleaned, 22

Bulk Solids Today

and thoroughly dried before storage; and each step involves proper timing, skills, and equipment. At auction, when buyers get a fast, accurate reading of grain or seed samples, this helps to rapidly decide which product lots to buy and what price to offer. With speedy, accurate, moisture readings, grain elevator operators can reduce spoilage, insect damage, and explosion risk. A major factor in silo explosions is the presence of airborne grain dust and its combustibility, which can correlate to its level of dryness. For food processors and blenders, mobile testing of the moisture content of grains on receipt – and even in trucks, rail cars, and storage totes – can help to ensure product quality. Such testing at various points along the production line can also improve quality and help to prevent altered taste, texture, and appearance, reduced shelf life, or even mold, staleness, and spoilage. SIMPLIFYING MOISTURE MEASUREMENT Although traditional laboratory and online based moisture measurement techniques are useful in the

CONTROLS & INSTRUMENTATION right settings, they have required rather lengthy centralized testing and lacked the simplicity and flexibility required for frequent spot checks. One common test is Loss on Drying, which measures the total material weight change after drying. However, such tests traditionally require a sample to be prepared and brought back to an air oven and manually tested (weigh, oven dry, weigh), which can take 2-48 hours to complete depending on the standard. Alternately, if an automated moisture balance (an integrated weighing and heating unit) is used, testing can take up to 15 minutes. Either way, such testing can be too slow when more immediate measurements are required. It also requires the sample to be altered or destroyed. As a result, secondary test methods have typically been used to deliver faster results. This type of test uses an indirect method and a single conversion to achieve accurate results. If there is a disadvantage, it is that the secondary instrument must first be calibrated to ensure accuracy. In some cases, calibration can only be performed by trained staff familiar with the equipment. In response, many agricultural moisture meters have simplified the process, using capacitance technology. Capacitance is a measure of an electric charge separated from a given electric potential; it exists between two conductors insulated from each other. The dielectric capacitance technology commonly used in grain moisture meters is based on the relationship between a grain’s moisture content and its dielectric constant. As its moisture content increases, its dielectric constant increases. Since the rate at which the dielectric constant increases is different for all grain types, a unique calibration is necessary for each grain type. One unit that follows this approach is the PM650 Advanced Portable Grain and Seed Moisture Meter by Kett, a manufacturer of a full range of moisture and organic composition analyzers. The unit offers instant measurement and over 150 calibrations for the most common grain and seed types. While some agricultural devices may require grain husking and grinding, no sample preparation is required with the portable, battery powered device. Tests are simple. Pour the sample into the machine, and the moisture content and density (g/l) are instantly displayed. Automatic averaging enables quick spot check measurement of samples in bulk containers. To document such tests, the unit offers digital output to a computer or optional printer. While many moisture meters using the dielectric principle claim to provide accuracy to +/- 0.5%, to achieve such accuracy it is important to look for a unit that provides automatic density and temperature compensation. This is because changes in ambient, sample, or device temperature will otherwise degrade measurement reliability.

When greater accuracy is needed across a wider range of grain, seed, or other agricultural product types, the most advanced moisture meters utilize NearInfrared (NIR) light, a highly accurate, non-contact, secondary measurement method that can deliver immediate laboratory quality moisture readings. “NIR moisture meters follow the principle that water absorbs certain wavelengths of light,” says John Bogart, Managing Director of Kett US. “The meter reflects light off the sample, measures how much light has been absorbed, and the result is automatically converted into a moisture content reading.” According to Bogart, such meters allow very accurate instant measurement of any agricultural product without contact or sample preparation, so there is no contamination in handheld and online models. “Once the meter has been calibrated against the lab or production standard, the calibration is stored in the device so no calibration is required in the field,” he says. Unlike air ovens or even moisture balances, portable NIR equipment is designed for ease of use. For example, with Kett’s KJT130 Handheld Portable Instant Moisture Meter, the user simply points the instrument at the grains, seeds, or agricultural product. The moisture content is instantly shown on a digital display, with results accurate to .01% in a 0-100% measurement range. The unit, which is the size of a camcorder and is operated via user friendly menu commands, is designed for frequent spot checks wherever necessary, on both stationary and moving (process line) products. Moisture measurement data can be stored in the instrument, downloaded continuously, or manually recorded. “The goal is for anyone to be able to successfully use the moisture meter wherever it is needed, with minimal required training,” says Bogart. “This allows ag professionals to be certain that their grain and seed products are of the highest quality.” “The key is to cost-effectively be able to conduct as much testing as required, with full confidence in the results, each and every time,” adds Bogart. TRANSMITTER MAKES ANY STRAIN GAUGE WIRELESS

B

anbury-based Sensor Technology Ltd has a new range of transmitters that can add wireless capabilities to any make of strain gauge. The WSG series transmitters allow any manufacturer’s strain gauge to send readings to Sensor Technology’s wide range of displays and readouts, which can be located at a distance from the gauge itself. Alternatively, they can be used with Sensor Technology’s PC-based software so that, as well as direct read out, analysis and interpretation can be completed instantly. The transmitters are for use with 350 ohm strain gauges and above. Calibration data is set using simple interface software. The wireless signal transmission is based on the unrestricted 2.4GHz technology, so does not need an operating licence. In use because there is no need to install and protect long cable runs from the gauge to the readout, the WSG units create a versatile and easy to install system. This also makes it simple to move the equipment between installations if required.

There are various models available within the range. The WSG-STD unit is DIN rail mountable and powered by a standard 11-32V DIN rail supply. The WSG-STM variant is designed for bench or wall mounting and has an internal rechargeable battery; it also has a socket so that it can also be powered from an external 11-32V supply. Both versions have a USB port for connection for a PC. www.sensors.co.uk

Micro powder dosing Made easy……. Powder Metering at ultra-low levels

Bulk Solids dosing equipment for feed rates above one kilogram per hour are readily available. A few companies can offer flow or batch rates below 50 grams per hour however, for applications requiring true micro dosing at quantities below this, the equipment becomes difficult if not impossible to obtain. Trantec have been developing a micro dosing screw feeder capable of extremely low feed rates and unrivalled accuracy. Combining Trantec’s modern, inhouse computer-controlled machine tools with their twenty plus years of experience producing Powder Metering Feeders, the “Nano” Feeder has gone from concept to working prototype in record time. Accurate feed rates below 5 grams per hour are now achievable. In-keeping with Trantec’s policy of continual development, the Nano Feeder is currently undergoing refinement and intensive product testing to iron out any manufacturing issues and improve production times, an important factor to keep the Nano Feeder competitively priced. Micro batch dosing presents numerous challenges which are simply not present on larger machines. The miniaturisation of the Nano Feeder’s components demands new techniques of manufacture and even tighter tolerances than usual. Careful design and experimentation have enabled us to create robust parts which can tolerate repeated handling in an industrial or laboratory environment. From the initial machine concept, Trantec utilised 3D modelling and high-resolution 3D printing to produce concept components. The 3D printed parts were assembled into a working prototype which allowed actual material trials on feed rates and accuracy. Once proven, the design was further enhanced to the highest specification required by the Bulk Solids industry by introducing pharmaceutical standards to the build quality. Metal detectable blue silicone gaskets, PTFE dry running shaft seals, dismantling without tools for easy cleaning and autoclave compatible components are now available as optional features.

A typical Nano Feeder comprises a conditioning chamber within the feeder body, complete with variable speed rotating agitator and variable speed rotating Auger, which provide constant or intermittent feeding to suit the application requirements. The agitator manipulates the product to a uniform density to ensure consistent loading of the auger. The agitator employs highly efficient contra rotating blades to break ‘bridges’ and ‘rat holes’ using technology borrowed from ribbon blade mixers. The product is then administered into an auger screw, which can be rotated at variable speeds, ensuring accurate metering at a constant volume of 1% to 2% typically. Modular in design, Trantec’s Nano-feeders offer easy access to all parts for optimum cleaning and maintenance. Our exclusive design ensures that wastage of expensive materials is kept to a minimum, with very little residue being left in the feeder. Complimenting the Nano Feeder’s mechanical capabilities, Trantec offer weigh control systems for both loss in weight and gain in weight applications including Gravimetric type continual weight loss monitoring and correction. Nano Feeders can be mounted on a dedicated weigh unit which offers even greater accuracy and control. Selection of the correct Nano Feeder configuration is essential for achieving optimum performance and accuracy. The nature and characteristics of the product is an important factor when choosing the size of the Auger Screw and configuration of the agitator. Trantec offer a free, comprehensive product testing service to all our clients. Upon completion of testing, we will provide you with a report, detailing our findings and our recommendations for trouble-free feeding. Alternatively, customers can witness material trials first-hand or request a video with your report. For more information Tel: 01282 777566 or send your enquiry to sales@trantec.info

Our specialists are available for you to contact at any time and can be quickly onsite. Vortex listens to end user needs and welcomes their feedback, based on product performance in-the-field. This open line of communication has led to many design improvements and new product developments – and allows our client-focused design philosophy to take shape.

What We Do

Innovators & Experts in Handling Dry Bulk Solids Selecting the right piece of equipment is critical to the success of any dry bulk material handling system. Misapplied components and deficient designs add unexpected costs and processing inefficiencies. The characteristics of dry bulk solids are endless, so there is no all-encompassing solution for every application. With more than 300 years of combined experience in the dry bulk handling industry, our application engineering knowledge is unprecedented. We have delivered solutions to a wide range of industries handling thousands of dry solid types, from fine powders to heavy ore. If the material is dry, there is a high probability Vortex has handled it.

Design Philosophy

Vortex components improve process efficiency, ensure dust-free environments, and establish longterm reliability. This is made possible through a design philosophy which integrates application engineering with specialized product design:

Compensate for Wear

Vortex has closely studied the characteristics of thousands of dry bulk materials and how they interact with various materials of construction. From those studies, we take pride in “designing for purpose,” rather than producing standardized, off-the-self components. We assess the wear potential for each client’s process and make applicationspecific modifications to ensure reliability, durability and

longevity – so that end users enjoy the full value of their investment.

Minimal Spare Parts

Vortex approaches wear parts design with a philosophy of its own: “Design simple parts which can be easily accessed while the equipment remains in-line. Parts must also be designed for durability and longevity, so that wear part maintenance is infrequent.” By designing simple parts, the maintenance procedures are also kept simple. By designing durable and long-lasting parts, the need to perform maintenance is infrequent and spare part inventories are reduced – which means a reduction in costs. For these reasons, spare parts account for less than 4% of Vortex sales.

Maintenance Friendly

Our priority is to keep you up and running – because in your world, there is no time for downtime. That’s why each Vortex product is designed with inline maintenance feature(s), so that the maintenance process is accelerated and your maintenance team saves time; therefore, saving you money.

Long Service Life

End users are often attracted to equipment on the fallacy of low price. While this may be true on paper, there is a cost-benefit to reliability and longevity. Vortex believes in designing only value-added products – not standardized, commodity equipment. With an inhouse team of engineers, Vortex designs equipment for even the most demanding applications. The result? – A product that will out-perform and outlast components found on the market today. For product information and technical resources, please visit www.vortexglobal.com.
