With its new Compact Series, SPX FLOW, Inc. has transferred the innovative Lightnin technology into a more standardized solution for users who require faster availability. The Compact Series mixers are ideal for open tank applications (e.g. municipal, industrial water or wastewater, and mining & minerals slurry processes) as well as for sealed tank applications (e.g. chemical process applications requiring a mechanical seal). This new series offers many of the features offered on other mixers in the Lightnin range including a choice of high efficiency impellers and a gearbox designed by SPX FLOW specifically for reliability in mixing applications while keeping simplicity of design. The new range also includes the Lightnin True Dry Well which is integrally cast into the gearbox. Critical for drinking water and other applications, the dry well protects against lubricants seeping past shaft seals, which can contaminate process fluids. The Compact Series offers users a highly competitive, straight forward mixing solution which provides the reliability, strength and efficiency associated with Lightnin mixers. The units offer a compact footprint, reduced weight and are easy to install with integrated cast iron feet on the gearbox. They can accommodate double or triple reduction in the same gearbox size, so the same space can accommodate multiple speeds. Their simple construction with parallel shafts in the gearbox further ensures quiet, smooth operation and, with low temperature rise in the unit, long lubricant life. The leading Lightnin impellers are designed to optimize mixing performance by maximizing flow generation and minimizing drive loads. The range covers powers of 0.75 – 55 kW (1HP to 75HP) with speeds of 13-155 rpm, is available with OSHA, CE and ATEX certification and availability of premium efficiency for safe area motors. To ensure excellent customer service and rapid delivery, gearboxes along with the shaft and impeller are assembled in our US facility where SPX FLOW has precision tooling and testing / metrology capability.
Through its Lightnin brand, SPX FLOW provides leading expertise in the science of mixing. The new Compact Series offers customers peace of mind, knowing they have the strength and reliability of a Lightnin solution at a superb cost to value ratio. THE BENEFITS OF PALLETLESS HANDLING WITH SLIP SHEET AND PUSH PULL ATTACHMENT
T
he slip sheet is an excellent alternative to heavy, bulky and expensive plastic or wooden pallets, and allow companies to eliminate the use of pallets altogether. Slip sheets are thin pallet-sized sheets made of plastic, laminated kraft paperboard, or corrugated fibreboard, and are used in commercial shipping. The same as a pallet, they are placed underneath a load and are used to push or pull the load on and off the platens of the push pull attachment. Slip sheets are becoming more and more popular as companies start to realise their potential for return on investment. They offer a significant number of advantages over pallets. The slip sheet has huge potential for cost savings as well as productivity benefits for a company. Unlike pallets, a slip-sheet is cheap enough to be thrown away after each use, and it doesn’t need to be tracked or repaired. It also weighs much less than a wooden pallet. Therefore, you can load more goods on slip sheets into the truck or container, maximising the use of space and minimising shipping costs. It is very thin compared to pallets, taking up much less space when stored. Considered environmentally friendly, slip sheets are easily recyclable due to an increasing number of companies producing them from recycled materials. To enable the use of slip sheets, a forklift truck must be fitted with a specialist hydraulic push-pull attachment. A push pull attachment can be easily installed on a forklift in only a few minutes. UK-based material handling equipment manufacturer B&B Attachments specialises in attachment design and innovation. The company manufactures and supplies push-pull attachments, together with a full range of handling solutions for a variety of industries. Specifically developed for handling slip sheets, the Push Pull attachment from B&B, utilises a gripper bar which clamps down on the sheet and pulls the load onto the platens during the loading process. The driver can then extend the hydraulic pushing grate, while reversing the forklift, allowing the goods to be discharged from 8
Bulk Solids Today
the platens and onto the container or truck trailer. This fork mounted attachment is easily connected to a conventional forklift truck for efficient pallet-less handling. It can then be swiftly disconnected to allow the forklift to return to handling pallets, ensuring the highest truck utilisation possible. It enables safe, productive handling of pallet-less materials in applications such as beverage handling, general cargo handling, bagged goods, fruit and corrugated box handling. Capacities are available in 1600kg and 2000kg and are designed with options of load push, push pull and push pull with sheet retention. Side shift is optional on dedicated models. An alternative solution is the slip-on fork mounted model. This model is designed for applications requiring the intermittent use of a slip-sheet. This attachment can be fitted to the forklift’s original forks within minutes by the truck operator, without the use of specialised tools or hydraulic equipment. It can also be fitted to the truck with a load backrest in place. It provides the perfect solution for when a standard lift truck needs to be converted to a slip sheet forklift. DELIVERING THE MILK
F
reshways is the UK’s largest independent processing dairy and provides wholesalers, manufacturers and other businesses such as cafes, hotels, retailers and bakeries with milk and cream products together with a wide range of own-label and branded food including bread, yogurt, fruit juices, cheeses, and eggs. The company produces and distributes some 6 million litres of milk per week from its processing facility in Acton, West London and operates additional retail distribution sites in Leeds, Manchester, Derby, Coventry, Cardiff, Birmingham and Plympton in Devon. The company’s Acton site operates around-the-clock, seven-days-a-week. Raw milk arrives at the facility from UK farms in insulated tankers and is emptied into a number of storage silos before undergoing processing and bottling. Once filled, PET containers or flexible ‘pouches’ are delivered from the bottling line to the adjacent cold store where they are held prior to onward delivery to Freshways’ clients. Palletised loads destined for Freshways’ various UKwide distribution sites are put into waiting refrigerated trailers, while a fleet of over 100 Mercedes Sprinter vans is used to deliver orders directly from the Acton site to retailers across London and the south east of England. 12
Bulk Solids Today
Freshways service some of the biggest purveyors of coffee in the UK and, typically, the Sprinters leave the Acton site destined for coffee shops loaded with two plastic transport containers - or ‘clappers’ as they are known - filled with ‘pouches’ of milk. Historically, Freshways has relied upon a fleet of counterbalanced forklift trucks to load the vans with full containers and unload the empty ones that come back to the Acton site using the van’s side and rear doors. However, the loading and unloading process was resulting in unacceptably frequent damage to the Mercedes van fleet so an alternative handling method was sought. Alex McDougall says: “We were recording high incidents of damage to the vans’ ‘T-bar’, bulk head and floor. We attributed this to the difficulty our lift truck operators were having when loading the first of the ‘clappers’ through the side door and the impact caused when the second container was loaded through the rear doors and pushed into the first unit.” Safety was also a concern. Alex McDougall says: “It is not unusual for a coffee store to return all or part of their order due to order amendments, so vans returning to Acton with product on-board have to be unloaded. Retrieving a full or semi-full container from a van involves
applying a strap to the container which allows it to be pulled out – either manually or by lift truck. The need to add the strap brings an element of manual handling that we are keen to avoid.” After discussing the various issues with the company’s materials handling equipment supplier, Hiremech, Freshways opted to trial JCB Teletruk technology at the Acton site. The JCB Teletruk differs from a conventional counterbalanced forklift in a number of ways but the most obvious is in its use of a telescopic boom mast in place of the standard lift truck’s vertical lift mast configuration. The Teletruk’s unique telescopic mast design gives a forward reach of 2.4 metres, which allows the Teletruk to deliver a pallet or container to the far end of a delivery vehicle without touching the floor or sides of the vans, until the pallet is gently lowered in to position. In this way, the Teletruk greatly reduces the risk of load and vehicle damage and, of course, cuts the likelihood of injury associated with manually handling loads in to vehicles. Freshways experienced an immediate and significant drop in vehicle damage during the trial of the JCB Teletruk, while the exposure of warehouse staff to the risk of manual handling injury was also significantly reduced. In addition, throughput speeds at the site improved noticeably, as Alex McDougall, explains: “The ability to load and unload our van fleet using only the vehicles’ rear doors has speeded up the goods-out and container returns process. When it comes to unloading containers, the Teletruk’s boom mast allows both ‘clappers’ to be removed from the van without the need to apply a shackle strap to the container at the far end of the van as had previously been required.” Following the success of the trial, Freshways has taken delivery of a diesel powered Teletruk from the JCB Logistics range which has been supplied by Hiremech on a five-year service and maintenance contract. Paul Murray, JCB’s Teletruk general manager, says: “As Freshways have realised, one of the most common causes of lost van ‘up time’ is not an engine fault deriving from poor maintenance or damage resulting from reckless driving: it is bodywork damage inflicted by poor load handling and loading techniques. “In simple terms, when it comes to van loading it is common practice for a small counterbalanced truck or pallet truck to be used to lift a palletized load into the back of a vehicle. The pallet is then often ‘slid’ into the van’s storage space either manually or using the forks of the lift truck. “But, as many fleet operators have found to their cost, there is a significant likelihood that a container or other palletized load that is slid into the back of a van will often cause significant damage to the vehicle. “More and more logistics operators and courier firms are eliminating this problem by introducing JCB’s Teletruk technology to their operations.” www.jcb.com

new ultra-heavy-duty Bulk Bag Filling System from Flexicon receives abrasives, high-density solids and other difficult-to-handle bulk materials from upstream processes or storage vessels, and fills the material by weight into bulk bags. Intended for mining, glass, ceramics and other demanding industrial applications, the system is comprised of heavy-gauge variants of the company’s patented TWIN-CENTREPOST™ filler and FLEXICON® flexible screw conveyor consolidated on a robust skid with integral forklifting tubes for mobility. The filler is equipped with fill head height adjustment to accommodate all popular bag sizes, pneumatically retractable bag hooks and an inflatable connector to seal the bag inlet spout. A feed chute outlet port can be supplied with a filter sock for dust-free air displacement during filling, or vented to an optional BAG-VAC™ dust collector or the plant’s bag house. The FLEXICON® conveyor consists of a steel outer tube with a rugged flexible screw that self-centres as it rotates, preventing material from grinding between the screw and tube wall, while eliminating the need for a bearing at the intake end. Since the screw is driven at its upper end beyond the discharge point, material contact with seals or bearings is eliminated. Once the operator attaches the bag straps and activates the inflatable spout seal, all functions are automatic. The conveyor runs at full rate as the filler’s vibratory deck cycles on and off to densify and stabilise the material. Load cells transmit weight gain data to the PLC, which slows the conveyor rotation to trickle-feed rate, stops the conveyor once the bag has gained its target weight, and releases the bag straps, enabling a forklift to remove the palletised bag. The company also offer REAR-POST bulk bag fillers for pass-through roller conveying, and SWING-DOWN® fillers which additionally pivot the fill head to the operator at floor level for the fastest and safest bag connections. DEMAG KBK EXTENDING CRANES FOR OPTIMUM USE OF WORKSPACE Optimum height utilisation For lifting and positioning loads beyond the crane runway
D
emag Cranes & Components has added overhung and extending configurations to its KBK Aluline light crane system. Such solutions are designed for applications where there is a requirement to move loads beyond the crane runway span dimension. They enable operators to perform lifting and positioning tasks between pillars and columns or deposit loads in aisles and free areas between assembly zones and lines. Depending on the load capacity, design and profile section size, the range can be extended by up to 3,100 mm. Crane extensions to either side of the track runway span dimension may also be specified, creating an even greater range of crane coverage. Compared with Demag’s conventional KBK crane kit, this configuration has a lower headroom dimension, allowing users to benefit from 120 to 220 mm more hook path, dependent on profile size, for improved utilisation of space below the crane girders. Extending and overhung components may be added easily and quickly to existing KBK installations to improve productivity, without the need to install additional crane runways. The KBK Aluline system is suitable for a wide range 16

of operational requirements in production, assembly and shipping applications. The system is based on aluminium sections and smooth running trolleys. The result is a system that provides the operator with hands-on support for the movement and positioning of loads, improved ergonomics and reduced physical effort for material handling. It also facilitates an increased lifting path for enhanced operation of gantry mounted hoist units. The extension length, maximum load capacity up to 500 kg and the crane girder length can be easily selected when designing KBK crane installations. Systems may be designed by Demag’s dedicated engineering team or user specified via the company’s on-line KBK Designer tool. Sales Director, Paul Bartlett, stated: “The KBK lightweight crane system was first introduced over 56 years ago and the fact that it is still used today in a wide variety of workshop and assembly environments is testament to its inherent versatility and efficiency. We have continued to develop the system and this latest innovation will allow us to provide increasingly bespoke material handling solutions for an even broader range of industrial applications.” www.demagcranes.co.uk

IRON SEPARATION TECHNOLOGY AT CERAMICS UK SHOW Successfully removing fine iron from ceramic slips and glazes is vitally important in any ceramics plant. Such iron contamination is removed using high intensity magnetic separators like those on display on the Bunting and Master Magnets stand 1517 at the Ceramics UK show (10-11 July 2019, Telford, United Kingdom).

unting Magnetics is one of the world’s leading designers and manufacturers of magnetic separators and metal detectors for the recycling, quarrying and mining industries. Their wide range of metal separation and detection equipment is manufactured at their Master Magnets facility in Redditch, just outside Birmingham, UK. Iron contamination causes surface defects (black spots or holes), weakens the ceramic structure to crack, and reduces the whiteness of glaze. Most of the raw materials used to manufacture ceramics contain iron bearing minerals that then enter the ceramics manufacturing process. Bunting has a wide range of high intensity magnetic separators to remove the iron contamination or iron bearing minerals are various stages within the ceramics plant. Raw materials, such as feldspar, zircon and silica sand, are commonly purified at source. Most 18

non-metallic mineral processing plants include dry magnetic separators such as the Rare Earth Roll Separator and Induced Roll Magnetic Separator. Once entering the plant manufacturing ceramic tiles, tableware, sanitaryware or figurine, magnetic separators remove iron from both the slip, glaze and spray dry powder. The designs include simple Permanent Rare Earth Tube Magnets, commonly configured in a trap or as a grid, and Electro Magnetic Filters. Ultrastrong Tube Magnets attract and hold fine iron, which is then periodically manually removed. High intensity Electro Magnetic Filters attract and hold magnetic to a centrally located matrix, before initiating a selfcleaning sequence to remove all captured contamination. At the Ceramitec show in 2018, Master Magnets secured an order for two large Electro Magnetic Filters from a Turkish ceramic producer on the stand. An Electro Magnetic Filter, Grate Magnets and Neodymium Rare Earth Tube Magnets will be on show on stand 1517. “The UK has such a rich history of producing high quality ceramics,” said Dave Hills, Bunting Group’s Head of Sales, “and it is a great to see a UK-based ceramics focused show. Our relationship with the ceramics and non-metallic minerals industry stretches back to the first days of Master Magnets. We evolved with the industry helping reduce product loss due to iron-related defects. We are looking forward to speaking with UK-based and international ceramics producers at the show.” For further information, please contact us on press@buntingeurope.com or visit our websites www. buntingeurope.com and www.mastermagnets.com
WASTE MANAGEMENT & RECYCLING
MOBILE MAGNET SYSTEM SEPARATES BOTH FERROUS AND NON-FERROUS METALS Collaboration results in a single separator for waste flows
C
ooperation between Dutch company Goudsmit Magnetics of Waalre and German company Sortatec has resulted in a mobile metal separator that separates both ferrous and non-ferrous metals from bulk flows. The companies will jointly demonstrate the Goudsmit Mobile MetalXpert at the Recycling Aktiv in Karlsruhe, Germany (outdoor area, stand F356). The magnetic separator is easy to position in the right place and is designed for coarse bulk flows such as shredded wood. Both ferrous parts, such as nails, screws, staples and hinges, as well as non-ferrous parts, such as door handles and strips, must be removed from this waste. The result is three FERROUS separate material flows – ferrous, non-ferrous and clean (inert) bulk material – which is suitable for reuse. In addition to wood, the mobile machine is also suitable for construction and demolition waste, refusederived fuels and industrial waste, among other things.
parts are removed, the bulk is transported to a two-metrewide eddy current separator. There a powerful 22HI rotor separates the non-ferrous metals from the bulk material. The metal separator has a capacity of 100 m3/ hour and is fed by a 2000 mm wide feeder belt with speed control. The robust ferrite overbelt magnet contains material guide chutes; the eddy current separator has a 2000 mm wide 22HI rotor spinning at 3000 revolutions per minute. Both discharge belts are hydraulically height adjustable. The mobile unit is built on a single-axle trailer and suitable for public roads. www.goudsmitmagnets.com NON-FERROUS

CHECKS BOOKED? On-site safety across the waste industry is greatly enhanced if equipment operators are encouraged to follow a few basic vehicle safety and maintenance checks at the start of every shift, says David Banks, JCB’s Sales Manager – Waste and Recycling Sector.
I
t is well documented that waste and recycling facilities are potentially dangerous places to work. Last year, the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) identified poorly maintained equipment as one of the main causes of accidents in the sector and there is no doubt that on-site safety is greatly enhanced if equipment operators follow a few routine vehicle safety and maintenance checks at the start of every shift. Of course, each piece of materials handling equipment (MHE) will have its own specific pre-shift safety regime but there are a number of simple inspections that should be undertaken regardless of the make or model. For instance, before the machine has been turned on, operators should: • Ensure that the tyres have no damage and that the tyre tread is adequate; • Check that the machine’s windscreen is not damaged and visibility through the screen is not impaired; • Make sure that, when entering or exiting the machine, three points of contact are available to avoid slips and trips; • Ensure that the seat belt is in good condition and fits securely; • Test the vehicle’s warning horn. Once the engine has been started, operators should: • Check that the mirror is positioned to offer 360 degree visibility; • Ensure that the reverse alarm is working properly by engaging reverse gear; • Test the vehicle’s lights, front and rear wipers and beacon. And, when it comes to daily maintenance, operators should take time to check their vehicle’s engine oil, hydraulic oil and coolant levels and assess the air filter and washer fluid level at the start of every shift. Any problems identified during the safety and maintenance checks should be reported immediately to the site’s maintenance department. As part of an industry-wide initiative aimed at improving health and safety within the waste and recycling sectors, JCB has produced a series of five films
THROUGHOUT THEIR SHIFT IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT MACHINERY OPERATORS: • respect site speed limits and safe working procedures; • wear correct Personal Protection Equipment • only use the correct attachments • ensure that cab doors and windows are closed where possible to minimize dust ingress inside the cab • operators should have a full understanding of the operator’s handbook and, importantly, know where the handbook is located should they need to refer to it. that promote the safe and efficient operation of handling machinery at waste sites. The films are available to watch, free of charge, via YouTube and other social media platforms and are dedicated to specific machines in the JCB WasteMaster range. They cover essential preshift checks, basic maintenance routines and guidance on visibility and ongoing machine management. The films are designed to be complementary to existing training programmes and the content encourages operators to take responsibility for the machines they work with. Safety is everyone’s responsibility and, it goes without saying that personnel should always be sufficiently trained to operate any specific piece of equipment safely and efficiently, but by taking a series of simple steps, materials handling machinery operators will not only greatly reduce the likelihood of being involved in an accident, but also contribute to significant reductions in equipment operating costs. A commitment to safety management is essential at every waste site, and by encouraging MHE operators to incorporate pre-shift safety and maintenance checks into their daily routine, managers will take a big stride towards improving their company’s health and safety performance. www.jcb.com Bulk Solids Today

GYRO EX BIN ACTIVATING FEEDER/DISCHARGER Accurate Feeding and Discharging
T
he GYRO EX bin activating feeder and discharger produces a controlled gyratory motion to positively withdraw granular materials from bins, storage silos and hoppers at any desired feed rate for a more consistent and reliable discharge. At the heart of the GYRO EX bin activating feeder and discharger is the drive that produces a radial force creating a uniform circular motion on both the upper activation cone and the lower discharge cone. It is this annular radial vibratory motion which imparts the force to the material, assuring a more reliable and predictable material discharge. A unique feature of the GYRO EX bin activating feeder and discharger is that the stored material load is completely supported by the upper bin activation cone which has a lower cone angle than the discharge cone, assuring an uninterrupted and positive discharge of the stored material. The GYRO EX bin activating feeder and discharger can also be started and stopped as desired because material is not allowed to accumulate or stagnate in the lower discharge cone which might create packing or plugging problems. Irrespective of the particle size, the GYRO EX bin activating feeder and discharger is well suited for almost any size material and the rate can easily be increased or decreased by
adjusting the gap between the inlet opening and the upper activation cone. FEATURES: A. Low headroom reduces height. B. Material stops due to angle of repose. C. Gap is adjustable to increase or decrease feed rate. D. Circular distance of activation cone creates a wide feed zone. E. Vibrating lower cone is self-cleaning. F. Exterior mounted vibrating motor. G. High strength reinforced flexible connector. http://www.dynamicair.com/products/vibratory/ gyroex.html Phone: 44 1908 622344 Email: sales@dynamicair.co.uk www.dynamicair.com
AJAX NICKEL HANDLING SYSTEM FOR PROJEX SOLUTIONS
S
olids handling specialist, Ajax Equipment, has supplied Brighouse based project engineering, design and consultancy service provider, Projex Solutions Limited, with a handling system comprising collecting hopper and screw conveyor for transferring Nickel and Nickel Oxide powder. The nickel handling system collects the powder from a kiln gas cyclone. The mild steel hopper is vee shaped and steep walled for best flow behaviour. The collecting screw features both left and right-hand flights for efficient central discharge. Nickel is a fine, highly dense powder making it highly abrasive. To mitigate the resulting wear, the flights of the screw have been treated with a hard wearing coating. “The original cyclone hopper design had a history of bridging which would cause production delays on
the kiln. Projex were challenged to come up with a design concept to reduce the time delays. Ajax professionally turned the concept of this bridge breaking hopper into an engineered device on time and in budget to fit into a busy kiln refit programme, said Ian Lund, Principal Engineer, Projex Solutions Limited. BIN-WEIGHING IMPROVES PROFITABILITY OF WEST MIDLANDS LARGEST INDEPENDENT RECYCLING COMPANY Jones Skips, now the largest privately-owned recycling company in the West Midlands, has seen a significant impact on profitability since equipping its fleet with bin-weighing.
A
ndy Yeomans, sales and development Director, Jones Skips: “We used to know if bins were light or heavy but we didn’t know by how much. Then, a couple of years ago, we decided to have bin-weighing equipment retro-fitted to 3 of our vehicles and the difference to our bottom line was immediately apparent. “Now we weigh every bin and print a ticket off where necessary, so it’s there in black and white. If a customer presents an overweight bin we first give them a warning, but if they continue to overfill bins we invoice them for the additional weight. The bin-weighing has paid for itself and made us a much more profitable business.” Jones Skips has grown exponentially over the past 7 years with its fleet increasing from 12 to 42 vehicles and its team expanding three-fold to over 80 employees. The company has now standardised the ENVIROWEIGH bin-weighing system from Vehicle Weighing Solutions Ltd (VWS) on its refuse vehicle fleet. Andy added: “We are all about providing a good service so reliability is extremely important. The ENVIROWEIGH system is accurate, reliable and already certified for Pay by Weight services if we decide to offer that service in the future. VWS also provides an excellent after-sales service and they are able to calibrate and, if necessary, re-certify the bin weighing equipment at our premises to minimise any vehicle downtime.” Julian Glasspole, Managing Director, VWS: “We are delighted that Jones Skips have chosen our bin-weighing system for their fleet and that our ENVIROWEIGH technology is helping them to run a more efficient and profitable business.” Jones Skips is committed to lowering the age profile of its fleet and is currently purchasing 3 new Refuse Collection Vehicles (RCVs) fitted with ENVIROWEIGH and 1 new Front End Loader (FEL).
