IntelliPak 1, IntelliPak 2, and Voyager 3 Rooftop Units
Transition to A2L Refrigerant Ahead of EPA Deadline
Refrigerant management is one of Trane’s four pillars of decarbonization, along with
electrification, efficiency, and renewable energy. Migrating products to next-generation low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants is essential in the progression.
Trane continues on the path by transitioning IntelliPak 1 Rooftop Units (20-130 tons), IntelliPak 2 Rooftop Units (90-150 tons), and Voyager 3 Rooftop Units (27.5-50 tons) to A2L, a R-454B next-generation refrigerant that is more environmentally friendly according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
“Trane uses the right refrigerant for the right application at the right times while considering safety, reliability, performance, and cost,” says David Molin, Vice President of Trane Product Management. “We have
thoughtfully engineered the changeover of our popular IntelliPak and Voyager Rooftop Units to a lower global warming potential refrigerant and added leak detection systems standard on all units to make it easy for contractors and engineers to comply with safety and regulatory standards.”
Units from both lines now come standard with factoryinstalled leak detection systems that mitigate refrigerant concentrations so customers can help simplify compliance, and help to save time and money compared to installing a leak detection system in the field.
Trane is transitioning to the new refrigerant ahead of the EPA’s January 1, 2025, deadline for packaged units and split systems.
Keeping Cool & Sustainable In The Face Of Global Warming
Chilled water is a key element for maintaining comfortable temperatures in public sector buildings, and is typically deemed crucial for occupant well-being, productivity, and even equipment functionality. While various cooling systems exist, chilled water tanks play a vital role in ensuring efficient and reliable cooling, particularly in large buildings with many users - such as hospitals, schools, and offices spaces.
Cooling systems work by circulating chilled water through a closed loop connected to heat exchangers that transfer coolness to the building’s air. Central to this system is the chilled water tank, acting as a thermal reservoir that stores pre-cooled water generated by either a chiller or heat pump. This stored water allows the chiller or heat pump to operate less frequently, reducing energy consumption and wear and tear.
Chilled water tanks offer versatility and can be integrated into various cooling systems. The
most common applications are based around chiller plants, fan coil units (FCUs) or air source heat pumps (ASHPs). When used in combination with traditional chillers, tanks create a buffer, allowing the chiller to operate in longer cycles even during peak demand periods. This reduces energy costs and extends chiller lifespan. In buildings with FCUs, the chilled water tank provides the cool water circulated through the FCUs’ heat exchangers, cooling the air in individual rooms or zones. Chilled water tanks can also be integrated with reversible ASHPs. During cooling periods, they store chilled water; during heating seasons, they could be used as thermal buffers for hot water generated by the heat pump, although designated tanks for heating and cooling are recommended for largerscale public sector applications.
Deploying the tanks delivers several advantages. Critically storing chilled water reduces energy consumption since the tanks allow chillers to operate less frequently, minimising energy
use and associated costs. Tanks can also store cool water during off-peak hours. By enabling peak demand shaving, reliance on the grid during peak periods when electricity prices are often higher is reduced. The buffer effect of tanks also optimises chiller operation for improved system efficiency, reducing wear and tear and extending its lifespan.
Employing the tanks also ensures a consistent supply of chilled water, this helps prevent temperature fluctuations creating more comfortable conditions for a building’s occupants.
Chiller water tanks can also be combined with solar thermal systems to sustainably generate a portion of the cooling needs. While this may sound counterintuitive, the heat captured from solar thermal collectors can be deployed in an absorption chiller where the captured heat boils a refrigerant, creating vapor. This vapor expands and cools, producing chilled water. Compared to traditional electric
chillers, solar thermal systems can save significant energy, reducing reliance on the grid and lowering electricity bills, not only during the summer months but also contributing pre-cooling in shoulder seasons.
Integrating a tank seamlessly into existing or new cooling systems requires careful planning and expertise and, depending on capacity needs, space needs to be dedicated for installation. To address the wide variety of demand across public sector buildings Adveco offers system design and a comprehensive range of vessels, from its Chilled Water Tank (CWT) range of versatile carbon steel primary vessels to its premium range of Chilled Water System (CWS) vessels. The latter feature highcapacity connections at high and low levels providing greater versatility to cater for a wide range of system applications with moderate to high flow rates. These tappings enable the
tanks to be used with multiple cooling sources, including chillers, heat pumps and FCUs. With a wide-range of capacities starting at 300 litres up to 5,000 litres and working pressures from 3 to 10 bar (on request) even the most demanding or complicated system design can be easily accommodated.
Whether a chilled water tank is the right fit for your building depends on several factors including size, cooling demand, budget and sustainability goals. Larger buildings with high cooling needs benefit most from the efficiency gains offered by chilled water tanks and with multiple connection options compatibility is maximised enabling the tanks to be integrated with various systems. While the initial investment might be higher for premium models, long-term cost savings need to be considered, both in terms of potential energy savings and reduced operational costs over
time. This and the capability to facilitate the use of renewable energy sources for cooling also helps to contribute towards sustainability objectives and achieve strategic goals as part of a building-wide net zero initiative.
Chilled water tanks will increasingly play a critical role in optimising cooling systems for public sector buildings, offering numerous benefits from energy savings and improved comfort to flexibility and potential integration with renewables. However, careful consideration of investment costs, space requirements, and system compatibility is essential. By thoughtfully evaluating your needs and seeking professional guidance, you can determine if chilled water tanks can be the key to unlocking a more efficient, sustainable, and comfortable cooling solution for your built space.

Wireless fire alarm system installed at temporary theatre in Dartford
As a longtime maintenance provider for Trafalgar Theatres at their Orchard Theatre site in Dartford, Blake Fire & Security and Cygnus’ distributor Illumino Ignis (Kent) Ltd (IIKL) were approached for a solution to a unique problem: Satisfying the stringent fire safety requirements of their new temporary venue to hold 1,091 audience members, while the main Orchard Theatre was closed due to RAAC Works.
With a very short turnaround of a week, Blake Fire & Security and IIKL instantly knew that the Cygnus EN 54 certified, fully wireless SmartNetPro fire detection and alarm system would be a perfect fit for the venue. It provides an aesthetically pleasing solution and quick installation, with full EN 54 and BS5839 Part 1 compliance, while also allowing the right cause and effects for the theatre operation.
Designed to deliver a reliable and safe solution, the SmartNet-Pro range’s wireless network features patented Cygnus technology and is run by battery powered radio devices as part of a robust, self-forming and selfhealing mesh network, giving a minimum of two communication paths to each wireless device for maximum reliability.
“We have worked with Cygnus and the SmartNet-Pro system previously and knew it would be ideal for this unique project,” comments Rory Foster, Fire Safety Systems Manager at Blake Fire & Security. “SmartNet-Pro is 100% wireless as well as being robust and reliable, it was exactly what we needed for the complexities of this project. We also knew we could rely on the Cygnus team to help deliver the project in a timely and efficient way.”
Given the nature of the venue, the fire alarm system needed to have some advanced features to give the theatre control of the system. The Blake Fire & Security and IIKL team were required to consider these factors when creating the system: Smoke Machines being used during the performances.
A function of the SmartNetPro panel allowed us to program a function on button on the control panel to isolate
the smoke elements of the detectors in the auditorium during performances (Show Mode), while keeping the Heat elements of the detectors functioning as normal.
Heating pipes with hot air being blown throughout the site.
By utilising the Cygnus SmartNet-Pro Combi Smoke/ Heat A1R detectors, we were able to only have the smoke detection parts active for devices in the stream of the hot air, to avoid A1R false alarms.
The costly effect of a false alarm and evacuating the venue during a performance.
By having a 30 second initial delay, and a 2.5-minute investigation delay, we satisfied both the Fire Service and the Theatre by allowing the theatre staff to assess the cause of alarm before evacuating the venue, without leaving too long without the fire alarm activating if no one responded.
The combustible nature of the building, being mostly dressed in linen throughout.
Additional smoke detectors were installed on the edges of the linen draped ceilings at the request of the local fire authority, with high sensitivity smoke and heat detection to raise the alarm extremely quickly if the linen was likely to become compromised by a fire.
After a free site survey and design service, Blake Fire & Security and IIKL provided the specification and design to the theatre who then got the design signed off by the local council and local fire authority. Working closely with the theatre and local council, amendments and additions were made to the design, so the whole process was taken care of without any design surprises at the end of the project.
The SmartNet-Pro system of 65 devices was installed in a day, with another day allowed for testing and demonstrations; using rods and Unistrut fixings to fix detectors into positions where wired detectors would not feasibly be able to be installed.
The fire alarm panel was installed by the stage door, so that the stage door staff could hear when an activation has occurred, and then decide on whether to initiate the investigation delay.
As with all Blake Fire & Security and IIKL installations, a framed Zone Plan and As Fitted Drawing were fitted by the Control Panel, to give the Theatre Staff and Fire Brigade
instant knowledge of the building, and where the Fire Alarm activation has occurred.
All members of the Stage Door crew were trained by Blake Fire & Security and IIKL in the operation of the system including all the advanced functions like the delays and “Show Mode”. The system was demonstrated to the crew, so they knew what the alarm sounded like, and how to react when the panel buzzer activates.
Rods with the detectors mounted onto them were clamped onto the trusses for the lighting, giving high level detection in the auditorium where it was not possible to fix to the black linen ceiling. These detectors were then programmed on the SmartNet-Pro system to be Heat Only when the system is in “Show Mode” to prevent unwanted alarms from special effect smoke used during performances.
Ensuring all exits including stage exits were covered by Manual Call Points which would instantly evacuate the building without delay was imperative to allow occupants and staff in the venue to feel safe in the knowledge that if a person identifies a real fire, the fire alarm can be raised instantly at any exit from the building.
The ceilings in the Front of House have heating tubes running through, so combi detectors were mounted to the side of this, just below the linen ceiling using rods clamped to the metal structure above the linen. Extra smoke detection was installed along the low-level edges of the linen ceilings, on L Brackets, so that a fire could be detected quickly before the linen ceilings catch alight. These detectors were supplementary to the main detection along the apex of the ceilings. Given the nature of the ceilings, conventional wiring methods would not have been possible without
a very unsightly installation, so the wireless nature of the Cygnus SmartNet-Pro system was an obvious choice.
Following the completion of the installation, commissioning, and testing Blake Fire & Security and IIKL issued the O&M Manual with all certificates and drawings required for Building Control to sign off the system and deem the venue safe to open to the public.
Blake Fire & Security and IIKL will provide ongoing maintenance of the system to ensure the system is kept up to date and compliant.
SmartNet-Pro is the world’s first 100% wireless, EN 54 certified and BS 5839 compliant fire detection and alarm system while the new SmartNet-100 is ideal for small to medium sized projects, where the scalability of SmartNet-Pro is not required. Cygnus was thrilled to support the project by provision of a complete SmartNet-Pro system to guarantee the fire safety requirements were met.

Sharp increase in hospital fires highlights the importance of compliant fire door specification and inspections
New figures from NHS Digital[1] show there were a shocking 1,372 fires recorded by NHS trusts in 2022/23. This was a significant increase of over 18% from the previous year, and the equivalent of almost four fires a day across the NHS.
In response to this news, ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland is emphasising the utmost importance of correct fire door specification, installation, and ongoing maintenance with inspections.
Brian Sofley, Managing Director of ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland Door Group, explains: “The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires healthcare organisations undertake risk assessments to identify the general fire precautions needed to safeguard occupants in case of fire, including their safe means of escape.
“Fire doors are one of the most important safety features in a building, and their correct specification and installation are vital to ensure a complaint solution and protect lives. But the responsibility doesn’t stop there - regular inspections are essential to fully ensure health and safety measures are met.
“Healthcare buildings can present highly specific requirements for fire doorsets, with particularly varied legislation and building regulations surrounding fire doors in hospitals. But with fire protection systems failing time and time again, more needs to be done.”
BIM-enabled door specification
To aid compliant fire door specification in hospitals, ASSA ABLOY’s Openings Studio™ BIM application integrates with design software to create and visualise openings for complete door, frame and hardware
schedules and specifications.
This enables seamless extraction of door design intent and all relevant interfaces to assist the development of complete door requirements that meet building regulations. Product information, performance data and budget information are captured within the BIM design environment.
Through real time, collaborative working, these designs can be validated for compliance, functional performance, and aesthetics. They are presented as 3D views that can be fully re-integrated into the overall project design.
With linked internal systems, ASSA ABLOY use this final schedule of information to manufacture the complete doorset solution including the leaf, frame, and all specified hardware.
The Openings Studio™ mobile app can also directly access this data for use during the door installation process, ensuring full validity of the finished product prior to project completion.
The app also offers an easy to use ‘check box’ system to carry out and capture detailed inspections based on the specific details of each door included in the schedule.
This report validates if a door has remained compliant, or identifies what elements need to be corrected or replaced to return the product to the standard required, providing full traceability and ownership of all changes at all stages.
Fire door inspection schedules
As part of its commitment to fire door safety in hospitals, Door Group, a unit of ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions, also provides fully comprehensive inspections which can be carried out every
three, four, six or 12 months to suit specific requirements.
Following inspections, detailed reports are provided containing advice and recommendations on necessary improvements, with the knowledge that identifying any potential issues that could impact safety and product performance can be lifesaving.
If any issues do occur, a tailored repair proposal is issued to include anything from replacement doors to a regular maintenance program. Door Group inspectors are BRE-certified and will ensure that all fire doors inspected meet all necessary standards and regulations.
Brian adds: “These new figures are extremely concerninghospitals should be a safe and secure environment for staff and patients, and concerns around fire safety should not have to cross their minds.
“We are committed to helping hospitals and other healthcare organisations across the UK ensure fire protection across their estates. From door specification and installation to regular and thorough inspections, we can ensure the ongoing compliance and performance of fire doorsets to improve overall fire safety within the sector.”
