Sales Spike Across Herald’s Biodegradable Range

Q

uality disposables manufacturer and supplier, Herald has reported a spike in sales of its cornstarch cutlery, along with other products in its bidegradable range. The cutlery, which looks and feels like plastic, is natural and completely decomposable. Launched by the company in a bid to meet the growing demand for greener goods, it has enjoyed a surge in popularity since it first hit the market earlier this year. Herald is also due to launch a bagasse range of products which will include square, round and rectangle plates, in varying sizes, along with bowls and hot boxes. The range is expected to appeal to individuals responsible for sourcing items for large kitchens, workplace canteens and cafeterias, alongside the food to go and general catering markets. Managing director of Herald, Yogesh Patel explains why sustainable products are proving most popular in the current climate: “There has been a general raising of awareness and many facilities managers and caterers are working to a green agenda. It is now, quite often, a prerequisite that auxiliary products complement environmentally-friendly policies and meet a sustainable standard. This expectation is increasingly becoming the norm. “Our aim is to provide as much

choice as possible, while keeping costs down. Our customers are budget conscious and want to get the best value and good quality. It shouldn’t have to be a choice between one or the other.”

left behind. The market is driven by the end-user. Natural products are generally regarded as more environmentally-friendly and our customers’ customers are now insisting on an alternative to plastic.”

Herald has aimed to stay ahead of the trend for environmentally friendly and alternative products over the last few years, introducing natural birchwood cutlery, stirrers and skewers alongside its cornstarch cutlery range.

Herald is supplying an increasing amount of products to the facilities management and public sectors with both of these sectors historically among the first to step up to meet public demand and stand ahead of the curve when it comes to the general push towards eco-friendly choices.

Yogesh adds: “Any company that doesn’t offer sustainable solutions runs the risk of being

Designer Contracts Enhances Sustainable Product Offering With Eco-Engineered Underlay Designer Contracts, the UK’s largest flooring contractor, has launched a brand new, sustainable underlay made from recycled plastic bottles. An eco-friendly alternative to PU foam, felt and rubber underlay, SpringBond is manufactured in the UK and made from 85 percent recycled fibres. Designer Contracts worked closely with the manufacturers to exclusively develop the underlay product for the new build market. It is available in 7mm and 9mm thicknesses and is fully recyclable at the end of its life. Said Designer Contracts md, Peter Kelsey: “We are excited by this brand-new product, which demonstrates our passion and commitment to the environment, and we feel that homeowners will be just as enthusiastic. Interestingly, if the average three-bedroom household used it throughout their property, they would divert the equivalent of

1,000 500ml PET plastic bottles from landfill! “It offers users a number of benefits, it is lightweight, dust free, and also has excellent thermal and acoustic properties, enhanced by a ‘z’ shaped structure which creates natural bounce back – perfect for homeowners who are conscious about reducing their carbon footprint, without compromising on performance. “We’re passionate about doing our bit for the environment and our commitment was reflected in our recent Carpet Recycling UK ‘Take Back’ award that we won for the fourth time this summer for our scheme which is diverting over 250 tonnes of carpet waste from landfill.” The company operates across

of the stair edging to offer the ultimate solution for reducing slips, trips and falls on stairs. Designed to create an elegant, luxurious appearance, Gradus Luxury Trim System (LTS) is installed in all apartments and the gym. Ideal for mediumtraffic applications, the Gradus LTS range consists of solid brass tops available in six premium finishes, allowing you to choose a trim that blends in with the surrounding environment. Ideal for use in interior locations that are subject to medium-to-heavy foot and wheeled traffic, primary barrier matting from the Esplanade range was chosen, with Esplanade 1500 at the front door to all the apartments and Esplanade 1000 in the main entrances to the apartment blocks and the concierge building. Both matting products help reduce the amount of tracked-in dirt and moisture and prolong the lifecycle of the surrounding floorcoverings. This helps to reduce the risk of slips and trips caused by wet flooring, keeping residents and building users safe. ““The products from Gradus are exactly what we were hoping for, and they look fantastic in the

buildings,” continued Redrow’s James Holmear. “We’re really happy with the overall look and function.” Darren Curtis, Accessories Area Sales Manager at Gradus, concludes: “The key with this project was to find a balance between style and practicality, using products that had a premium appearance while enhancing residents’ safety by recommending the best possible solution for their requirements.” For more information on Gradus’s market-leading floor accessories or barrier matting solutions, please contact Gradus Technical Support on 01625 428922 or visit www.gradus.com.

Magenta supports first aid regulation for manned guards Magenta Security Services is strongly supporting the SIA’s decision to require licenced guards to undertake first aid training from 1st April, 2020. Their support is based on the belief that the new requirement will improve standards across the industry. “First aid training is highly regulated, recorded and demonstrates a high level of competence in terms of language skills, knowledge retention, sound judgement and a calm demeanour under pressure. All of which should be inherent in licensed security guards,” comments Abbey Petkar, managing director of Magenta Security. “Although Magenta are still ardent supporters of business level licensing for the security industry, we welcome this new policy as it will force security providers to ensure

their guards are better trained. It will end the situation where below standard individuals receive licences and increase the quality of security services available to the wider market.” Magenta Security has been a long-term advocate for stricter licensing of both security guards and security companies, campaigning for companywide licensing for many years. Whilst that will continue to be their ultimate goal, Magenta see this as a significant step towards more professionalisation across the industry. Abbey concludes: “Too many cowboy firms find ways to circumvent the licensing process, putting low grade guards in the field. They then undercut professional firms because they can get away with low wages

and poor working conditions. The addition of first aid training to the licensing process adds another level of robust quality control, ensuring higher standards across the whole industry.” www.magentasecurity.co.uk

Changing recycling behaviours in the workplace Recycling and waste are among the most talked about issues in the UK at the moment; though the only thing people seem to agree about is that we can’t keep going the way we are currently. However, organisations have the opportunity to have a significant impact as most people recycle at home but are less likely to in the workplace. For example, a company in the UK, who shall remain nameless, found that they were looking 88 kilograms of recycling a day with desk bins, which adds up to over 32 tonnes a year. They found that over 20% of what was in their general waste bins was food. Food waste is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gases, though it can be a resource

14

when it’s collected and sent for commercial composting to create nutrient dense fertilizer. For an organisation, there are a multitude of benefits that can come from an effective recycling solution, in addition to improving their green credentials. A considered recycling system can save you time, money and recyclables, while also improving your Corporate Social Responsibility;

this is particularly important as customers and potential employees are increasingly prioritising organisations that are reducing their impact. One of the greatest barriers to effective recycling in the workplace is that the way we design our spaces has changed rapidly from closed offices and cubicles to open plan spaces; but bins and recycling systems have remained the same. Traditional options such as desk bins or bins hidden in cupboards allow individuals to place all of their waste into one space discreetly. Let’s be honest here, recycling takes a certain amount of personal motivation, from educating ourselves to

Building & Facilities Management – November 2019

On The Cover

simply getting up from our desks to recycle. Further, at work many of the factors that encourage individuals to recycle at home are missing at work such as; the financial benefits of reducing the cost of waste disposal through recycling, a constant stream of feedback or awareness, control over the location of bins and often someone that encourages or enforces the correct behaviours. How to achieve results We believe that to have the greatest impact on their recycling rates organisations need to consider; how their space is laid out and what they need to change to make recycling more convenient than general waste options, and how they motivate individuals to change their behaviour. Organisations should bring recycling and waste bins out www.twitter.com/BFM_Magazine

into the open-plan design of modern spaces, while removing desk bins and bins that are hidden away. To have the greatest success the bins should complement the modern aesthetics and become a featured part of office design This means that when an individual needs to dispose of an item each recycling and waste option is available to them - making it more convenient than general waste options. Further, when an individual is out in the open where others can see them, they’re more likely to consider where their waste goes, even subconsciously. To get employee buy in, the organisation needs to make it clear that recycling and sustainability are a priority. The visible bins will become a statement of your organisation’s commitment but to maximise

results you should measure your waste and recycling. By using on-going measuring and reporting you can easily identify and action any recurring issues to ensure you’re getting the best results possible, provide a continuous feedback loop to your employees and in a time where greenwashing is more prevalent than ever - provide evidence that you’re making a difference. Method’s well designed bins and knowledgeable team have helped leading organisations around the world to implement effective recycling systems with their award-winning bins. Flooring

Bostik demonstrates the art of flooring at University of Suffolk APPLICATION: Subfloor preparation and flooring adhesives PRODUCTS: Universal Primer, Screedmaster Ultimate, Bostik’s BEST, Laybond Carpet Tile Tackifier, EVOSTIK Sticks Like Turbo LOCATION: The Arts & Design Building, University of Suffolk Jay Montgomery, Project Manager, Top Floors: “The great thing about Bostik is how they make a contractor’s job easier. I can call them and know that within days they’ll be on site, providing me with a specification. I also know they’ll provide me with excellent technical and sales support going forward. Bostik are great people to work with – they really look after their customers.” Bostik has supplied a host of subfloor preparation and

16

flooring

flooring adhesive products for use on the refurbishment of the Arts & Design Building at the University of Suffolk. The products, combined with Bostik’s expert advice, enabled a faultless installation of the new floor coverings in the building. Ipswich-based Top Floors was appointed by main contractor RG Carter to strip out the twostorey centre’s rubber stud tiles, which were installed when it was built in the early 1990s, and replace them with 700m² Altro Walkway vinyl and 500m2 of Burmatex Tivoli carpet tiles as well as new nosings for the staircases. To ensure that the subfloors were prepared correctly, and that the new floor coverings were bonded as effectively

and efficiently as possible, Top Floors approached Bostik for its specialist guidance and market-leading products. Everything covered In the early stages of the project, Bostik’s technical service consultant, James Rosher, and Area Sales Manager, Phil Godley, visited the site several times to carry out initial tests. These revealed no concerns with moisture in the subfloor. The focus was therefore to ensure that adequate preparation was carried out following the removal of the rubber stud tiles, and that a suitable smoothing compound was applied once the floors had been returned to a strong, sound base. “As can be the case with projects like this, the removal of the existing floor coverings was quite a longwinded process,” explains Jay Montgomery, Project Manager at Top Floors. “I chose Bostik at the outset so we would get the benefit of their input throughout, as I knew that contracts can evolve and unexpected things come up.”

Building & Facilities Management – November 2019

Flooring

The perfect products Once Top Floors had removed the previous floor coverings and cleared the building of dust, the company primed the subfloors using the versatile Bostik Universal Primer. This was then followed by Bostik’s two-part Screedmaster Ultimate smoothing compound, which offers excellent workability and flow characteristics. To bond the vinyl floor coverings in the corridors and on the staircases, Top Floors applied Bostik’s BEST flooring adhesive. Suitable for an array of different floor types including vinyl, Bostik’s BEST dries rapidly to form a strong bond. It also offers best-inclass handling characteristics, excellent coverage rates and good resistance to plasticiser migration – one of the most common issues

with vinyl flooring. For the carpet tiles in the rooms, Bostik specified its Laybond Carpet Tile Tackifier. The key benefit of this is that Laybond Carpet Tile Tackifier is designed to provide a permanently tacky film when dry – thus enabling the easy removal and replacement of individual tiles in future, reducing the university’s ongoing maintenance costs. Finally, Top Floors installed 100 new Quantum nosings on the building’s stairs using the high-strength Sticks Like Turbo adhesive from Bostik brand EVO-STIK. Supplied in a cartridge, EVOSTIK Sticks Like Turbo is a high performance, fast setting grab adhesive that sets in just 15 minutes. It can be used on almost all building materials and is both weatherproof

Building & Facilities Management – November 2019

and water resistant. As it’s solvent free, it’s also ideal for use in occupied buildings. “We were very happy with the products that Bostik supplied us with, and their technical support was secondto-none,” concludes Jay. “In terms of the finished refurb, we were really pleased with it – and I know that RG Carter and the university were too, which is what it’s all about. Bostik played a vital role in this. “The great thing about Bostik is how they make a contractor’s job easier. I can call them and know that within days they’ll be on site, providing me with a specification. I also know they’ll provide me with excellent technical and sales support going forward. Celebrating Fabian 50 Years This year we celebrate a highly esteemed member of the Fagerhult family, Fabian. It is a subtle retro fixture, deeply connected with our innovative heritage. When launched in 1969 Fabian was Sweden’s – maybe even the worlds – ever first fitting made of plastic. It was a huge success, and has sold over 4 million copies since then. The first protoype was created by the housing of two thermoses in different sizes. The injectionmoulded plastics, as it would turn out, could not only withstand the warmth from hot beverages – but also the heat from a bulb. After some testing, the development team had created a seamless, screwless design that could easily be implemented in the production system. Due to the absence of screws, assembly

18

Lighting

could easy be done with the help of a special fixture. The procedure was clocked at 11 seconds flat. “You’ll need at least five” When launched, Fabian was

marketed as an all-round luminaire that did not just belong in the bedroom, but in the living room and the study too. “You’ll need at least five Fabian at home!”, the ads stated. The fact that Fabian was offered in a wide range of colours following the latest interior design trends contributed to its persistent success. The estimated sell when launched was 10 000 units. No one could have guessed that Fabian actually would sell over 4 million copies. A child of its time With Fabian, Fagerhult became known as the frontrunner within plastics. However, today the housing is not made of plastic, but light sheet metal and with an up to date LED-module. Fabian comes in 26 standard colours, and one exclusive version in opaque glass. It is truly a child of its time!

In addition to its routine maintenance capabilities, Light Boss provides automation of routine emergency light testing and maintenance requirements, for example with self-test features for emergency lighting. Reporting on the energy consumption of all connected lighting fixtures allows analysis and measurement of a single

site, or all the sites being managed. This makes the Light Boss ideal for reviewing the energy performance of multi-site portfolios. Energy and facility managers can log in to review data from any site location as little or as often as needed. “A major advance of this integrated solution is that it can be applied to new builds, retrofits, old and new lighting” added Saima Shafi. “Light Boss modules are connected during the LED lighting upgrade, saving the time and costs of an additional lighting control installation. Because the technology is retrofittable, any luminaire and even individual lamps can be replaced with new LED and wireless-enabled luminaires.” The savings can be substantial. Operating the lighting where it is needed, rather than at 100% brightness constantly, not only minimises energy consumption, but also extends lighting lifecycles and reduces maintenance costs. Example cost savings for a distribution centre fitted with LED lighting and Light Boss are around 87% with a payback of less than two years. For more information please visit www.lightboss.co.uk

comments; “Fire is often overlooked as a cause of disruption and as a serious risk to the business itself. The immediate physical damage is only part of the problem caused by a fire; the costs of operational disruption and reputational damage often far exceed the cost of the original damage. Without adequate protection, it can take just a matter of minutes to bring a company to its knees.” “We were pleased to discover BigChange at a show back in 2016. We had been through a long and unsuccessful process trying to get three different systems working for our business and all had failed. Due to the ease of set-up, we were able to implement the system ourselves in just two weeks,” says Barnes. “With BigChange we now have a system that supports our business model providing many benefits in terms of efficiency, productivity and customer service”. Fireward’s fleet of nationwide vehicles is fitted with BigChange trackers, providing the customer service team with full visibility of engineer locations and a record of arrival and departure times from site. The location and condition of plant and other assets are key factors in

assessing the risk of fire and the tablets are used to record ‘time and location’ linked photographs. With the ability to capture a customer’s signature ‘on-screen’ via the app, there is immediate proof of every job completed, allowing for a streamlined invoicing process resulting in fewer billing queries. “BigChange supports our company ethos, which we achieve with a modest team in place. JobWatch has not only allowed us to do five times more services a month but has allowed us to freely expand our business where we are now installing well in excess of 1200 new systems a year,” adds Barnes. With the Fireward engineers working remotely across the UK, they need to have the ability to effectively manage their stock levels without causing downtime and potential loss of business. With the help of the JobWatch tablet, engineers are now able to track and replenish their van stocks with ease, as well as the ability to record and review all stock movements, parts and equipment used during the process of installation, maintenance and servicing of Fireward’s fire suppression systems. www.bigchange.com

Fläkt Woods chooses Danfoss Drives to make buildings safer Fläkt Woods, part of FläktGroup, a leading supplier of indoor air and critical air solutions, has selected Danfoss HVAC VLT® variable speed drives (VSDs) for use in its groundbreaking fully tested and certified high temperature fan/ VSD range. The packaged solutions in this new range, all of which offer full compliance with the latest EN12101-3:2015 standard, will make it significantly easier for designers to provide efficient and dependable smoke control in buildings during fire events. EN12101-3:2015 came into effect on 8th April 2017 and offers three options for the control of fans that must continue to operate during fire events. These are to use a fully tested and certified high temperature fan/ VSD package, to bypass the VSD controlling the fan motor during fire events, or to de-rate the fan motor by 20% and fit a voltage waveform filter. Whilst they could already offer the second and third solutions, Fläkt Woods considered that, in most

applications, the first option would offer significant benefits in terms of increasing building occupant safety. “Bypassing the VSD during a fire event means that the fan must run at full speed, which makes it difficult for designers to implement their required smoke control and extraction strategies,” said Andy Cardy, Product Manager for Axial Fans at Fläkt Woods. “And using a non-certified fan/VSD package means fitting an oversized motor and an expensive filter that may well cost more than the VSD. With all of this in mind, we decided to go ahead with developing a tested and certified fan/VSD solution.” As Fläkt Woods is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of ventilation and smoke extract fans, the company used their recently updated in-house development laboratory and the expertise of their dedicated research and development team to support the deployment of this product solution. For the VSDs and for advice on motor selection, the company

called on the resources of another acknowledged leader in its field: Danfoss Drives. The decision to work with Danfoss was based on the company’s outstanding reputation for innovation and product quality, its extensive experience in the HVAC industry and its supportive approach to helping achieve the goals of this important project. Engineers from Danfoss worked closely with their counterparts from Fläkt Woods for more than two years, investigating and evaluating all of the permissible options for controlling fans during fire events. Ultimately, they developed the package solution comprising Fläkt Woods fans and Danfoss VSDs with operating parameters specifically selected for this demanding application. After the development work had been completed, the finalised product offerings were subjected to rigorous third party testing at BSRIA, as required by EN12101-3:2015, with the Danfoss engineers continuing to provide support throughout the test period. The exceptional quality of fans and VSDs ensured that the testing programme was successful, making Fläkt Woods the first company to bring to market certified fan/ VSD packaged solution. “We see this as an important breakthrough in building safety because knowing that they will retain full control over fans during a fire event gives designers many more options for efficient and effective smoke control”, said Andy Cardy. “We are, of course, very pleased to have achieved certification for assemblies that include our fans, but we’re happy to acknowledge that the HVAC VLT® VSDs from Danfoss Drives are also a crucial component of the package. In a nutshell, the success of this important project is the result of the happy marriage of products from two companies that are equally committed to safety, quality and innovation.” www.drives.danfoss.com

The partially subterranean Barrow House emulates a modern barn and was constructed using innovative construction techniques and finished with a range of high quality finishes and detailing. The house adopts a huge range of sustainable features such as a ground source heat pump and a roof top wildflower meadow. Steve Turner, Managing Director of Belvin Construction said: “This was an amazing project to be part of and we couldn’t be more proud of our work. It’s a very modern building, but I think the design and the materials suit the environment perfectly. It was also really good to work with great architects and contractors which are all based in the area; this project has helped to put Lincolnshire on the map and proved once again what we’re all capable of.” Commissioned in 2016, it was the first home in Lincolnshire to be brought forward under Paragraph 79, a clause that allows for exceptional design in rural areas. The owners moved into the modern four bed home this spring. The home looks out onto an ancient monument called “the Barrow” and was built using a concrete frame with durable cladding which is designed to rust as www.twitter.com/BFM_Magazine

Proteus Facades Brings New Life To Abandoned Building A derelict building on the edge of Northampton city centre has been transformed into a striking 21st century educational facility, thanks in part to mirrorpolished, perforated panels from Proteus Facades. What was once the Royal Mail Sorting Office on Barrack Road, has now been redeveloped into an iconic school featuring a reflective Proteus SC Perforated Stainless Steel façade. After closing due to a fire in 2003, the building remained uninhabited for over a decade and fell into disrepair. Once described as an eyesore of the city, the structure has now been given a new lease of life as Northampton International Academy. Helping to respond to a significant requirement for

28

Building & Refurbishment

school places in the city, Architecture Initiative identified the old sorting office as the ideal space for the new state-of-the-art school. Working closely with the local authority, the Londonbased architects redesigned the colossal, brutalist building, which was originally opened by Princess Diana on her first solo engagement in 1981, into an education hub filled with natural light. The Proteus SC Perforated panels installed at Northampton International Academy cleverly mask the monolithic appearance of the original structure, whilst not completely hiding this brutalist piece of architecture. The mirror polished surface on the face of the panels reflects the skyline

giving the impression that the building is less imposing. Reducing the perforation sizes from the middle of the façade to the top and bottom edges, maximises translucency, whilst acting as brise soleil, providing shade from solar glare and preventing over-heating to the teaching spaces. The single skin perforated panels were manufactured from a sheet of 2mm Stainless Steel, which offers the ideal combination of high strength and a modern, progressive aesthetic. The material also holds excellent corrosion resistant properties. Each panel, installed by Deane Roofing & Cladding, is supported by the Proteus aluminium carrier system and ancillary components anchored to a cantilever steel frame

Building & Refurbishment

from the underlying masonry structure. These allowed the panels to be hooked-on from behind, accentuating the sheer, smooth façade interrupted only by the perforated design. Northamptonshire is known for its history of crafting leather goods, particularly the art of traditional shoemaking. So taking the design process one step further, Proteus Facades worked closely with Architecture Initiative to create perforations that acknowledge this heritage; with the holes on each panel positioned to imitate those found on a Northamptonmade brogue-style shoe. In addition, careful placement of the small and large perforations allows natural light to pass through and flood the interior of the school, whilst the metal façade is rendered virtually invisible from the inside. This innovative approach is just one of the reasons Northampton International Academy was named one of the “boldest” buildings of 2019 by the Royal Institute of British Architects. www.twitter.com/BFM_Magazine

With a floor area of 22,250m2 and generous high ceilings, the academy, run by the EMLC Academy Trust, accommodates over 2,220 pupils, including 420 primary, 1,500 secondary and 300 sixth formers. The front of the school houses two illuminated signage boxes that indicate separate entrances for primary and secondary pupils, which perfectly complement the mirror polish of the Proteus SC panels. Proteus SC is an engineered panel system that is available in either solid, perforated or expanded mesh formats, and in an extensive range of metals, colours, textures and forms. The system is available between 1mm and 5mm in thickness and can be specified with an acoustic insulation layer encapsulated within the panel. For internal applications Proteus Facades can also provide contrasting fabric inserts when

the panels are perforated. Delivered by Northamptonshire County Council with funding from the Education and Skills Funding Agency and developed by Contractor, Vinci Construction, Northampton International Academy is one of the largest education conversion projects in the country.
