WAREHOUSING SHORTAGE STIFLING ECONOMIC RECOVERY – BUT WAREHOUSE STAFF SAFETY MUST BE A PRIORITY WARNS MIDLAND PALLET TRUCKS With economic experts predicting a steady recovery for the UK economy, fears are growing that the uptick could be derailed by a lack of available warehousing space – making efficient operations all the more vital in goods loading and unloading. Stretched warehouses must also prioritise worker safety and make it a top priority in the months ahead, the materials handling retailer Midland Pallet Trucks has warned. Warehousing space availability and the growing land and space needs of supply chain and logistics industries could have a serious impact on the economic revival. Even prepandemic, Savills warned that the country was significantly ‘underwarehoused’ something that has only been exacerbated Brexit, Covid-19 and the resulting shift towards e-commerce. While some UK retailers have set up warehousing space and distribution operations in central Europe due to a lack of availability at home, others are unable or unwilling to take their logistics and warehousing operations into the EU. With the government seemingly choosing to ignore the plight of retailers and warehousing managers alike, the additional pressure on an already stretched workforce currently working in the warehousing sector cannot be ignored. West Midlands-based Midlands Pallet Truck says that safety should always take priority over productivity, but with the sector stretched to full capacity and beyond many are expected to meet increasingly tough productivity targets. This makes having the right equipment to safeguard staff against injury more important than ever.
Midland Pallet Trucks, which stocks a vast range of highquality materials handling and lifting equipment including pallet trucks, manual stacker trucks and lift tables, has been supporting the industry throughout the pandemic and is urging those struggling to meet higher than normal productivity targets to reach productivity targets too.” consider the health and wellbeing of their staff. “DRIVE IT LIKE A DIESEL” – THE LATEST ADVANCES IN HYSTER® LITHIUM-ION LIFT TRUCKS Phil Ireland from Hyster Europe discusses the latest advances in lithium-ion power for Hyster® lift trucks, and why common misconceptions could leave businesses missing out on the optimal solution. In the past electric forklifts may have had a reputation for not being as ‘tough’ as their Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) counterparts. Though electric trucks thrive when matched with the right application, across the industry they can be typically seen to deliver 70% or less productivity compared to an equivalent ICE forklift. Until now. NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN LITHIUM-ION
In 2020, Hyster launched the J7.0-9.0XNL series, with fully integrated lithium-ion batteries. These zero-emissions electric lift trucks with 7-9 tonnes of lift capacity offer comparable performance to an ICE truck,
alongside rapid opportunity charging, due to some key advances in technology and truck design. For the first time, you can take a lithium-ion forklift, and “drive it like a diesel”. A common objection to electric lift trucks is the run time. It is a fact that batteries can only store so much energy, so previously operations would need to factor in the time, and infrastructure, for re-charging, making an ICE truck a simpler proposition. However, the capability for opportunity charging with a lithium-ion battery changes that. Operations with two or three shift operations can easily top up the charge, preventing the
need for battery exchange and a separate charging room. The battery is also maintenance free with no watering or equalising, unlike a lead-acid battery. A single shift, seven-day-a-week operation using an electric forklift with a lead acid battery would, by contrast, need to equalise every six cycles for 16 hours. What’s more, the lithium-ion battery permits high levels of regenerative braking current to be absorbed, extending run time and improving efficiency. This mode of operation is only possible on an electric lift truck and delivers the added benefit of less wear and tear on the brakes, in turn reducing maintenance costs. THE SECRET’S IN THE VOLTAGE
A key differentiator with the new Hyster® J7.0-9.0XNL series is the voltage. The 350V technology makes high power charging and intensive performance possible. There is no loss in performance from frequent charging or capacity loss at heavy usage. The higher voltage system makes it possible to charge at up to 50kW, speeding up the process. From empty, the lithium-ion battery can achieve 100% charge in less than 80 minutes. Importantly, high-power charging also allows for a quick boost – for certain applications, one minute of charging may create up to four minutes of drivetime. And the high voltage has other benefits too. Lower voltage batteries result in a higher current for the same level of power and can overheat in intensive work cycles. 6

COMPANY NEWS trucks are a more expensive initial purchase, though they have a long working life and when matched with the right application will offer productivity gains that can offset the cost. However, low hours and less intensive operations may find the economic benefits more limited. Likewise, operations with high hours and small fleets may find opportunity charging intrusive, and large fleets may struggle to meet peak power demand capacity for charging. Hyster has the expertise, both in-house and through our trusted dealer network, to advise on the transition from ICE to electrics, the right charging strategies, and ultimately matching the right solution to the specific needs of the application.
Conversely, the 350V battery supports high productivity (in tonnes per hour moved) and applications with both intense peaks and continuous heavyduty usage. In this case, an electric truck is absolutely tough enough. The Hyster® J7.0-9.0XNL series also features tough drivetrains, simple engineering, longer service intervals, and components built to last the lifetime of the truck, minimising truck maintenance needs. There is also another important myth to address – that “electric trucks overheat all the time”. The Hyster® J7.09.0XNL lift trucks are not only designed with a high voltage (and therefore low current) system that greatly reduces heat development, but also incorporates specially designed water-cooled motors and drive controllers to prevent this, while increasing the overall efficiency of the truck. Battery monitoring systems are also included to keep a close eye on under and overcharging.

BESPOKE HANDLING SOLUTION FOR BUILDING MATERIALS MANUFACTURER Aggregate Industries manufactures and supplies a range of heavy building materials, primarily aggregates such as stone, asphalt and concrete, to the construction industry and other business sectors. With over 200 sites and around 3,700 dedicated employees, Aggregate Industries supply products to help businesses work sustainably, safely, professionally, and profitably. The Concrete Products Division at Aggregate Industries based in Callow, Cheddar, identified there was a requirement to standardise the most efficient loading method across the fleet, irrespective of trailer type, while maintaining safety expectations. Aggregate Industries building block sites had traditionally used a forklift fitted with a pivot style overhead clamp attachment to load packs of concrete building blocks onto flat beds and crane lorries. However, there is insufficient clearance between the top of some block packs and standard curtain sided trailer roofs to lift the clamp clear, preventing direct loading of curtain sided trailers. As a result, Aggregate Industries Concrete Block Factories had been using a far less efficient and time-consuming process which involved placing its block packs on to pallets and then loading by a conventional forklift. This loading method was more than double that of flat and crane vehicles loading times and associated costs, plus created a reluctance to take advantage of additional payload and potential backhaul loads that the network fleet of curtain sided trailers offered, and have a 8

premium cost for use, as there is little scope for back haul of other goods. It became necessary to find a solution to prevent double handling of loads, ensuring that the load travels straight from the yard storage to the curtain sided vehicle. Neil Spratt, Aggregates Industries Regional Operations Manager approached B&B Attachments with a proposed forklift clamp concept that would create space to enable the twin clamp to lift clear of block packs after they had been loaded onto a curtain sided trailer. B&B Attachments is the leading specialist in material handling solutions in the UK and Ireland. The company designs, manufactures, and supplies forklift truck attachment solutions. Its design department converted the concept into reality. Following numerous meetings, a prototype TK45-TEL clamp was manufactured. This model would not only work as a standard twin consolidating overhead block clamp, but also have the added key benefit of being able to load packs directly onto curtain sided vehicles. As the TK45-TEL had an additional leg retraction selection. Considerable time was spent to eliminate potential incorrect function selection by forklift operators. This added safety innovation allows its hydraulic
system to work independently for each clamp, enabling the operator to clamp, load, and withdraw easily and safely when loading a curtain sided vehicle. The B&B Attachments BlockMaster TK45-TEL is a new, first-of-its kind innovation. “The clamp preforms all the other duties expected of a twin consolidating clamp. The retractable legs and hydraulics control interlocks in this new attachment, provides efficient direct loading of concrete products efficiently on to curtain sided vehicles. It also opens the door to exciting haulage efficiency opportunities previously not pursued.” Comments Richard Smith, Business Improvement Manager at Aggregate Industries. www.bandbattachments.com

SPECIAL FEATURE MPX Series trucks are the perfect addition to a fleet.” Ideal for medium to high intensity operations, the MP20-30X can be used in the loading and unloading of trailers, working around the dockside, order picking and cross docking. The MPX Series tiller head has an ergonomically shaped handle, fitted with an integral hand guard, and will automatically return to the vertical position when released by the operator. The large butterfly control buttons are engineered to support natural thumb movement, with all dash panel components within easy reach. Rather than forcing the operators to adapt to the same driving style, the MPX Series trucks feature driver mode selection to suit different operators’ skills. Cushioned support MPX Series trucks are available in three configurations. For operations managers who would prefer the versatility of switching between ride-on and pedestrian mode, the MPX Series is available with a foldable platform and side arms for support. There are also two fixed platform options: one with permanent rear protection for the operator, and one with permanent side protection. To meet the needs of specific applications, a foot sensor can be installed on trucks with permanent side protection, which will only allow the truck to be driven with an operator on-board. “The operator platform on the new Yale MP2030X Series trucks is designed to support a number of comfortable driving positions, while the rubber floor mat delivers extra grip while in transit,” explained Gianbattista. The MPX Series trucks have a number of new features that allow operators to move loads smoothly and efficiently. The new, robust design of the foldable side arms provide stability and security when the truck is in motion, while also reducing maintenance costs and improving productivity. As well as its ability to work in tight spaces, the MPX Series trucks can transfer loads across extended distances and offer a wide capacity range of 2 to 3 tonnes. The new fork design is available in a range of lengths, with customers also able to choose from two fork heights to suit their specific needs. The extended forks option allows the MP20-30X to transport up to two
pallets or three Europallets crosswise per journey. Operation managers can choose the power solution that best fits their needs with lead acid and lithium-ion batteries offered for the MP2030X trucks. Its durable design combined with a low energy consumption helps keep ongoing running costs under control. A range of innovative options The MPX Series can be tailored to applications with a range of additional options. A smart lift option can elevate loads and begin transporting pallets before its load arms are at full lift, eliminating the need for the operator to continually hold down the button. A height adjustable tiller is suitable for a wide range of operations. Simply by adjusting the position of the tiller, operators can adapt the truck into a driving position that they find comfortable. For low-light environments, a working light package on the Yale MPX Series illuminates the load area. A cold store solution enables the MPX Series trucks to cope with temperatures as low as -30°C without any effect on its performance. “We’re really proud to unveil our new MPX Series trucks. Yale has worked hard to identify features in which we can offer comfort and ease to the operator to help them be as productive as possible during a shift in a busy environment. We believe the MP20-30X accomplishes this and would be an asset to any warehouse operation,” concluded Gianbattista. ELEVATING HYSTER® REACHSTACKER CABIN WINS TOP INDUSTRY AWARD The hinged elevating operator cabin for the Hyster® RS46 ReachStacker has won the Safety award at the FLTA (Fork Lift Truck Association) Awards for Excellence 2020. At the online awards presentation on 10th April 2021, the pioneering Hyster® solution received the award for its unique design which helps terminals handle containers on the second rail, reducing damage and improving efficiency. The solution was also shortlisted in the Innovation category. With the ‘hinged’ elevating cabin on the Hyster® RS46, operators have direct visibility of the top corner pockets on second rail containers even with a container on the first rail. Previously, cameras or staff had to direct operators, slowing operations and increasing operational costs, while potentially increasing risk for staff walking trackside. The moveable cab is raised and lowered smoothly on a hinged arm and the speed can be adjusted. The Hyster® RS46 ReachStacker has also been designed to offer an optimal ergonomic driver environment that reduces sideways movement, shock and vibration when the ReachStacker is in motion. An optional tilt of up to 10° can also be added to help make handling high stacks even more comfortable. Also, unlike a mast, when the cab is lowered, it does not increase the truck height, offering benefits for road transport. “We’re delighted to be taking home an ‘Archie’,” says Chris van de Werdt, Product Strategy Manager, EMEA Big Trucks for Hyster Europe, referring to the statuette of Archimedes presented to all of the award winners. “The elevating cab option for Hyster® ReachStackers helps to overcome the real-world challenges of tough terminal operations,” Chris continues. “It’s fantastic that the intelligent design, with both operators and businesses in mind, has been recognised by the FLTA Awards.”
High Efficiency Drying or Cooling of Bulk Solids The Bella dryer/cooler offers thermal efficiencies to 80 percent or better because air flows around material while it is suspended in the weightless zone. The result is a more consistent material.
For more information about Hyster® ReachStackers and other tough Hyster® trucks for ports and terminals, visit www.hyster.com. The FLTA Awards for Excellence encourages and rewards examples of excellence throughout the fork lift industry, culminating in an event attended by the UK’s key logistics industry figures and leading equipment manufacturers. KINGS HEATH DEMOLITION ADDS DOOSAN MINI AND CRAWLER EXCAVATORS Kings Heath Demolition Ltd, the demolition company based in Redditch in Worcestershire in the UK, has purchased new Doosan mini and crawler excavators from Stourport-on-Severn-based Murley Construction, the local Doosan dealer. In the latest batch of new Doosan machines, Kings Heath Demolition has taken delivery of the company’s first three mini-excavators, comprising Doosan DX17Z, DX27Z and DX63-3 models. The order also includes three of the larger Doosan DX225LC-5 22.1 tonne crawler excavators, adding to Kings Heath Demolition’s existing DX140LC-5 and DX225LC-5 units. Tony Nicholls, Senior Contracts Manager at Kings Heath Demolition, said: “With the new Doosan DX17Z, DX27Z and DX63-3, we are adding miniexcavators to our fleet for the first time. These machines meet the increasing demand in the market for indoor demolition and refurbishment work, involving work in confined spaces and basements. We are beginning to see an uptick in this type of project, including the conversion of existing multi-storey office buildings into new apartments in urban locations and the new Doosan mini-excavators are perfect for this type of work.” The first new Doosan crawler excavator purchased by Kings Heath Demolition was a DX140LC-5 14.4

tonne model. This machine and the DX225LC-5 models subsequently added have so impressed the company’s drivers, that Kings Heath Demolition switched brands and has only purchased Doosan in the last 3-4 years. Tony Nicholls added: “When you add how much our drivers like the Doosan machines to the impeccable service offered by Murley Construction, it has been a simple decision to keep adding more Doosan excavators. We work throughout Great Britain, undertaking contracts in England, Scotland and Wales, so reliable and high performing equipment is essential for our work, supported by the best aftermarket back-up on the market.” A Proud 70 Year Legacy in the Demolition Industry Founded in 1952 by Jim Ferran, together with his brothers and his father, Kings Heath Demolition Ltd has been a leading demolition specialist not only in Birmingham but all round the country. Kevin Condon of Murley Construction was delighted to welcome Jim Ferran and Tony Nicholls for a photo opportunity with the new Doosan DX17 and DX63-3 mini-excavators when they arrived at the Murley premises in Stourport-

on-Severn. Shortly after starting the business, Jim went on to complete two years of national service in the British Army, before rejoining the family firm in 1954. Jim has commented in detail on the various works the company has completed across the West Midlands region, noting it was mostly carried out by hand in the earlier days of the business. Kings Heath Demolition has always been dedicated to the recycling side of the industry. In fact, the company had three yards to store and sort all the demolition debris from its projects, to recycle these materials back into the construction industry. After a period of hiatus from the industry, Kings Heath Demolition came back to life again in 2016 when John Smith, one of Jim’s former employees, approached him with the idea of restarting the business. Jim was more than happy with this and explains how he was excited to see the company pick up where it had left off. Kings Heath Demolition is now owned and run by John Smith and Jim’s son, Paul Ferran, with the support of Tony Nicholls as Senior Contracts Manager. The company offers a very wide range of demolition services including soft strip works; asbestos surveys and removal; on-site crushing and high rise demolition. Over 60 Years Serving the Midlands Market Also established in the 1950s, Murley Construction has been providing machinery sales and support for
over 60 years to the Midlands community. Murley Construction represents the full range of equipment from Doosan that also includes wheeled excavators, wheel loaders, articulated dump trucks and attachments, providing full servicing, repairs, warranty and parts back-up from the company’s modern and well-equipped premises, with Doosan-trained technicians and advisors. With more glass integral to its design the new premium cab also provides excellent visibility during driving, reversing and manoeuvring. “For container handlers, including ReachStackers, we have developed a dedicated cabin with even more floor space and a redesigned joystick control,” Chris says. “To help operations keep control of costs, the cabin also includes a performance counter which reports usage data such as the number of containers moved, fuel used per container and distance covered per container.” To support accurate and efficient handling, Hyster® Empty Container Handler drivers also benefit from a user-friendly digital performance 7” display. An optional second graphic display can also clearly show the status of spreader engagement and whether the container has a positive lock or not, as well as any limitations the operator should be aware of. This may speed up operations and reduce ‘mispicks’, enhancing productivity even in heavy-duty applications. The new Hyster® ReachStacker cabin includes a dual digital display with load weight and load moment information, as well as boom geometry, 18

as standard. This helps support operators with suggested actions for maintaining stability and reducing load-centre. “Applications handling at long load centres with ReachStackers can also increase performance thanks to extra low-end engine torque on the new Stage V engines. Noise at inland terminals can also be reduced,” Chris says. For emissions regulated markets, the new Stage V engines will be introduced gradually, with Hyster® Empty Container Handlers and Hyster® RS46 ReachStackers among the first models to benefit, featuring either a 7.7 or 10.7 litre engine. The Stage V Hyster® trucks also incorporate smart monitoring and service to optimise uptime in demanding applications. The service interval of the engine oil has been extended from 500 to 1000 hours and the engine oil level will be shown in the cabin display, so there is no need to use a dipstick. A two-stage coolant level warning via the display is also standard, alongside a timer to prevent hot turbo shutdown. The transmission has also been updated across the range.
ON THE COVER
To accommodate extreme duty applications, the transmission cooling capacity of the updated Empty Container Handlers and 18-32-tonne heavy duty forklifts has been increased significantly. The trucks also feature a hydraulically driven fan that helps reduce fuel consumption and noise levels. Reversing fans can be supplied by the Hyster Special Engineering Team if required. “Businesses can select the right truck for their needs thanks to a range of different options, from pump sizes to operating mode,” says Chris. “Addons include a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, directional control on steering column, Bluetooth radio, container weighing solutions, a choice of seats and many more.” The new truck engines will use a combination of a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and DEF like AdBlue® and a Diesel Particle Filter (DPF). Both after-treatment units are packed in one box positioned on the outside of the truck providing easy access and heat rejection. The ash cleaning interval is approximately 4500 hours depending on the application. The engines are equipped with cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), which minimises the creation of NOx, resulting in
less AdBlue® usage. Due to its low market volume in emissions regulated countries, the 40-52-tonne Laden Container Handler will not be developed for Stage V compliant regions but will feature the updated Hyster® cabin, allowing operators in non-regulated markets to experience the productivity and ergonomic benefits. Updated trucks with Stage IIIA compliant Cummins engines for non-regulated countries will follow later. For more information, contact your local Hyster® distribution partner or visit www.hyster. com. FEEDERS & CONVEYING
CAN YOU PNEUMATICALLY CONVEY RICE GRAINS? YES, YOU CAN! Gericke has designed and delivered several dense phase conveying systems for transporting dry rice to filling lines. These systems fully preserve the quality of the fragile rice grains and increase the overall process safety and reliability. For a major food producer Gericke had the challenge to replace mechanical transport systems with pneumatic conveying systems. The goal was to prevent any foreign bodies often associated with mechanical systems and at the same time not to change the grain sizes of the various rice types for example long grain, basmati and risotto rice. During the evaluation phase Gericke demonstrated conveying trials that replicated the clients process at its major test facility in Regensdorf (Switzerland) that a low velocity

dense phase plug conveying system is perfectly suited to smoothly convey rice over distances of up to 70 m. The achieved product quality convinced the customer as well as the fact that no external air injection system was required. In order to achieve the best product quality a continuous conveying system using a twin pressure vessel system, PTAD was chosen, as no expansion cycle with increased velocities could occur. The vessel sizes were also kept small to satisfy the limited available height below the existing collecting hopper, from which the different rice types are filled by the upstream process. Several conveying systems type PTAD are now delivering rice to the packaging lines which are located 20 m to 70 m away and at capacities from 6 t/h to 15 t/h.

DUMPING FROM SAFETY CAGES ELIMINATED WITH FLEXIBLE SCREW CONVEYORS SMK Nutra Makers, a formulator and contract manufacturer of dietary supplements and nutritional products, improved production of a protein shake sports drink by switching from manual dumping of a powdered chocolate mix from an elevated safety cage, to dumping of the mix at floor level into mobile flexible screw conveyors. Previously, operators in a safety cage were raised by a forklift to dump 25 kg bags of the shake powder into either of two screeners positioned above blenders. To improve the laborious, dusty procedure, the company purchased two mobile, high-capacity flexible screw conveyors, each dedicated to a separate blender. The powder is now dumped at floor level into the hopper of a conveyor, which feeds a screener and, in turn, a blender. SMK owner Avni Patel says, “Manual handling at floor level has increased productivity, eliminated dust, and improved worker safety.” Supplied by Flexicon, each of the BEV-CON™ model conveyors includes a 7.5 m long beveled-edge spiral driven by a motor positioned beyond the discharge point, precluding material contact with bearings or seals. The conveyor’s charging adapter consists of a trough at the outlet of a pyramidal hopper that exposes the intake end of the spiral to the powdered mix. A pneumaticallyactuated vibrator fitted to the hopper wall promotes the flow of powder into the trough as the rotating spiral moves it at a 45° incline through the enclosed tube, discharging it into the screener. A 3.6 m high castor-mounted frame with support boom enables operators to roll the unit into position with the conveyor discharge directly above the screener, and thereafter to a cleaning area. Mobility of the units also provides SMK with the flexibility to satisfy new processes. Patel says, “We also considered a solid shaft auger conveyor among other options, ultimately deciding on the Flexicon conveyors.” The conveyors were purchased through manufacturer’s Quick-Ship 22

program, reducing the lead time associated with custom-built equipment. “The conveyors are precisely what we needed,” she explains. “We no longer have issues of dust, safety and fatigue when moving the chocolate powder. We’re in the process of expanding and will be ordering additional units.” The company also manufacture other configurations of flexible screw conveyors, as well as bulk bag fillers, pneumatic conveying systems, tubular cable conveyors, bulk bag unloaders, bulk bag conditioners, bag dump stations, drum/box/ container tippers, weigh batching and blending systems, and engineered plant-wide bulk handling systems with automated controls. SPECIAL FEATURE
HEAT EXCHANGERS IMPROVE PETFOOD MEAT SLURRY QUALITY Meat slurry and mechanically deboned meat (MDM) products are often processed when warm or at room temperature. However, due to the nature of both product and co-product streams, this can limit the shelf life and holding potential of such products. Cooling meat slurry and similar materials can extend their shelf life and open up new markets and processing options. A leading Australian supplier of poultry products has improved the quality of waste products produced at one of its facilities by implementing a new cooling solution from HRS Heat Exchangers. The plant in question produces a range of butchered and prepared chicken products, and therefore also generates waste in the form of trimmings and material not required for human consumption, such as ground chicken necks, backs and feet. The new equipment supplied by HRS allows this material to be sold as a pet food ingredient. Australian regulations mean that ingredients for both human and animal consumption have to be kept at an appropriate temperature (typically below 4°C) during processing. Because of the highly viscous nature of the material, and the risk
24
Bulk Solids Today
of freezing during cooling, it was determined that a scraped-surface heat exchanger would thoroughly mix the product during cooling and prevent freezing. The thick, viscous nature of the material means that a phenomenon known as ‘slugging’ can occur. This means a channel of warmer product travels down the centre while the product at the tube wall does not move. As the cooling medium (in this case glycol) is less than -5°C, this creates the risk that the product at the tube wall will freeze, while the material in the centre is not cooled sufficiently. Matt Hale, International Sales & Marketing Director at HRS Heat Exchangers, comments: “In a traditional tubular heat exchanger this product would be likely to freeze on the tube walls due to the low fluid velocities. The HRS R Series has scrapers which turn at high velocity, mixing the
SPECIAL FEATURE product and increasing heat transfer. As a result, we can specify a heat exchanger with a smaller surface area, lower working pressures, a smaller footprint, and lower capex compared with other designs. Due to the limited space available, creating a solution with a small footprint was a key priority for this product.” The chilling system is based on three HRS R3 Series scraped-surface heat exchangers providing continuous cooling. Using three units in a parallel arrangement means that any two heat exchangers can continue to work (with a standard treatment capacity of 2,500 kg/hr) while the third is cleaned, serviced or just on stand-by. However, at times of peak production all three units can be run simultaneously, giving the system a maximum treatment capacity of 3,500 kg/hr. To ensure efficient and reliable operation with this difficult product, HRS adapted the internal scraper configuration to achieve the high performance necessary, while implementing a heavy-duty gearbox to withstand the higher torques required to keep the product moving. A glycol cooling system reduces the temperature of the product from 23°C to just 3.5°C in a continuous pass, with a total retention time around 4 minutes. An autonomous control system ensures that any outgoing product which has not reached the required temperature is diverted back to the start of the process for further cooling. As well as the main heat exchangers, the system supplied included a receiving hopper with auger feed, an HRS BP8 piston pump (which is ideal for viscous materials) to propel product through the system and the necessary heat exchangers and pump for the glycol cooling system, as well as the standalone control system. The solution was constructed from stainless steel and mounted on a skid to facilitate quick and easy installation and commissioning. Matt Hale adds: “Although this system is designed for poultry waste products, it is equally suitable for mechanically deboned meat products where the same cooling requirements exist, for example in sausage production. Using three triple tube R Series heat exchangers
also means that we have been able to save space and money compared to a system which would otherwise require on nine individual heat exchangers, while providing the same performance capacity. Of particular interest to companies involved in meat processing is the fact that we can chill the product to very low temperatures without adverse effects.”
