RAW MATERIALS PLATFORM, ZARAYE, RAISES $2.1M IN TIGER GLOBAL’S FIRST PRE-SEED INVESTMENT IN PAKISTAN Karachi based business-tobusiness raw materials marketplace Zaraye raises $2.1mn in their pre-seed round from Tiger Global and Zayn Capital. Other investors include +92 Ventures, Alan Rutledge, Jack Rizvi, and current and former Careem employees holding key positions in their tenures. This is Tiger Global’s first pre-seed investment in Pakistan. Founded in late 2021, Zaraye helps manufacturing businesses procure raw materials and finance the working capital. It is currently serving clients across textile and construction industries, with over 300 partners and suppliers spread out in 20+ cities. Pakistan’s industrial manufacturing sector contributes to 20% of the country’s economy with a $35bn raw material market annually with raw materials contributing 60-65% of the total costs for the manufacturers. In conditions where net margins are thin, finding efficiency in costs becomes critical for these businesses to win orders and sustain against competition locally and globally. Additionally, SMEs have always found acquiring financing a huge battle for their businesses from financial institutions, and are forced to turn to informal markets with ~2.5x premiums. Ahsan Ali Khan, co-founder and CEO of Zaraye commented: “We aim to strengthen the backbone of the country’s economy by helping the entrepreneurs in finding avenues to optimize and scale. Zaraye will help our partners to compete locally and globally as they find more savings in time and money to create the best products. With the confidence of amazing investors in Zaraye, we are geared to supercharge our mission to reach millions of users” Traditionally a manufacturer would connect with a handful of intermediaries or directly with the 4

suppliers with a tedious process of going through multiple phone calls, and wait for them to furnish rates. This process is longer, tedious and brings very limited options for the buyers to make a decision. With Zaraye, buyers of raw materials can simply post their requirements for the required product and the relevant suppliers can furnish quotes in real time making the information for buying decisions vast and quick. At the same time, the suppliers can access consolidated demand volumes with the vast network of buyers on Zaraye’s platform. Faisal Aftab, Managing Partner & Co-Founder of Zayn Capital BitRate Fund commented: “Procurement in the manufacturing industry is a massive problem with similar models showing immense success in comparable markets. We believe in the Zaraye team and their capabilities in solving this problem in Pakistan. We’re super excited to be a part of their journey.” Zaraye is available across platforms with their iOS, android and web app. The platform helps buyers of raw materials connect with multitude of suppliers who furnish their quotes in real-time making the process faster and hassle free. Zaraye was founded by IBA class fellows Taha Iqbal Teli, Hashair Junaid Ahmedani and Ahsan Ali Khan who worked together at multiple instances throughout their academic and professional careers. Taha and Ahsan have been part of the tech ecosystem for the past 5 years with experience at giants like Careem and Swvl. Ahsan led Swvl’s Travel category for Pakistan in his last stint, while Taha led the TaaS product for Karachi before launching the Daewoo Adda, a logistics product for transportation’s leading player Daewoo. Meanwhile, Hashair after completing his postgraduate degree at the University of Bath, where studied with Taha he returned to Pakistan to join
his family business in Karachi. Hashair soon found his passion in the hospitality industry introducing Czech and Levantian cuisine to Pakistan with two successful ventures while building an FMCG brand for imported coffee from Latin Amercia. Hashair Junaid Ahmedani, cofounder of Zaraye added: “Small and medium business owners have been trapped in a cycle of high competition and lack of financing options- Zaraye aims to help these businesses scale as they find the efficiencies in procurement and financing options to make better decisions for their businesses.” Taha Iqbal Teli, co-founder of Zaraye said “Our goal is to help these entrepreneurs focus on manufacturing and selling their products. Zaraye will handle the entire procurement process, all the way from getting quotes, assuring quality, delivering to their doorsteps with any after-sales assistance our partners might require. Our partners remain at the heart of all our endeavors and we believe this massive problem cannot be solved without a world class team. As we build great solutions for our customers, we are always on the lookout for great talent and I would encourage everyone who feels passionately about building solutions at scale that make lives easy and loved by customers to apply away.” Having worked together on multiple projects, the three came together to solve one of the biggest problems faced by the manufacturing industry in emerging markets. Hashair’s experience while working with his family business was critical in understanding the problems faced by the businessmen and how they operate. The team amalgamates context from legacy businesses and building modern solutions at scale. Zaraye has built a strong team with experience from Swvl, PWC UK chapter, Daraz and Louis Dreyfus and their tech team is led by Asif Ali, ex-CTO Cheetay.

EIRICH GROUP ACQUIRES STAKE IN START-UP FOR PROCESS DIGITALIZATION The fourth industrial revolution is well under way, driving the intelligent networking of machines and processes in factories. Selflearning production systems and machinery are opening up innovative development opportunities for the German mechanical engineering sector that will strengthen its competitive ability even further. Against this background, Eirich is setting a new milestone for the worldwide Eirich Group: A joint venture with the name “Prosio Vision” offers intelligent control technology for the bulk material industry and will serve as the AI center of the Eirich Group. The Eirich Group, with Maschinenfabrik Gustav Eirich as its strategic center in Hardheim, has been a world leader in mixing and processing technology for more than 100 years. Under the Qualimaster name, Eirich has been offering in-line process monitoring for supplied systems and operations across many industries and processes for decades already. Working together with Nuremberg start-up Prosio Engineering, Eirich has now developed a new camera-based system, the “Qualimaster VC1”, for the optical quality assessment of granules. The new measuring system combines cutting-edge camera technology with AI-based intelligent analysis software. This allows key variables of granular materials, such as particle size distribution, grain shape and grain surface, to be measured. The data obtained open up many different possibilities in the control of complex production systems 12

for the optimization of product quality and line efficiency. The Qualimaster VC1” is to be developed and marketed in the joint venture which Eirich and Prosio Engineering have just established. Eirich’s plans, however, go much further: Within the Eirich Group the start-up is to serve as a center for digitalization in the bulk material industry. Both parties have significant contributions to make – on the one side the expertise of young process engineers who have specialized in intelligent analysis systems and AI applications, and on the other the decades of mechanical engineering experience and process know-how of Eirich. The joint venture seeks to drive the intelligent networking of machines and processes in bulk material factories and offer suitable, selflearning solutions. “Digitalization offers huge potential for boosting the efficiency of many industrial systems and thereby protecting our environment and resources. We are convinced that mechanical and plant engineering must also make an important contribution on the road to the Smart Factory, or Industry 4.0. The Eirich Group will continue to develop globally from a supplier of stand-alone systems and machine-based service all the way to a smart and steady systems partner for plant
operators,” says Stephan Eirich, CEO. In taking this step, Eirich hopes to further consolidate its technology leadership in line with the company’s slogan: “The Pioneer in Material Processing”. HEAVY DUTY BUTTERFLY VALVE Posi-flate 585/586 butterfly valves feature seats and discs for application pressures up to 10 bar. The design improves on existing 485/486 seats to provide the same incredible valve life at even higher pressures. The 585/586 valves are designed to fit PN 10 flanges, and come in sizes 80mm to 600 mm.” The Posi-flate Series 585/586 butterfly valves are designed for the most the most severe of applications. They are ideally suited for very abrasive materials which can reduce valve life. The inflatable seat design provides a better seal by utilizing air pressure to expand the seat against the disc, providing more sealing area and an even pressure distribution against the disc every time. The seat automatically compensates for wear when it inflates against the disc, extending valve life considerably. Because the Posi-flate disc only makes casual contact with the seat during opening and closing, torque requirements are substantially lower. This ease of movement also allows the disc to come to a perfect 90-degree position every time. Additionally, the smooth profile of the disc helps material flow easier and reduces build-up. For unique fail-safe monitoring, a pressure switch can be utilized to verify a perfect seal. The Posi-flate 585/586 butterfly valves are available in a wide variety of construction materials including stainless steel and lightweight aluminum. https://www.posiflate.com/products/585.html Posi-flate Milton Keynes, United Kingdom + 44 1908 622366 E-mail: sales@posiflate.co.uk www.posiflate.com

A NEW CHOICE FOR RADAR LEVEL SENSORS: VEGAPULS 6X Traditionally, the search for a suitable level sensor begins by thinking about things like: what solution would be best for my application? How can I ensure I choose the correct and most reliable device for a successful outcome on my project? Of course non-contact radar offers great answers for all of these questions. This is often followed by thoughts and investigations about the properties of the product to be measured, could it influence a sensor, as well as the installation and operating environment. Furthermore, process conditions like: temperature, pressure, the presence of abrasive, aggressive materials, corrosive chemicals, or dusty conditions and build up in bulk solids, may also give cause for concern. Many of these details are often well known to the user. What they can be less sure about is, “Which model is best?”. Sometimes differences can be subtle. Would the highest specification option, perhaps with exotic materials, be the right choice to be on the safe side? Or a basic design, that seems to fit the job, but what if it’s not up to the performance needed?
14
Bulk Solids Today
These and other questions make one thing clear: with such wide ranges, selecting the right one can be difficult. Customers have to match up their application conditions to the large variety of radar sensors, models, antennas and frequencies on offer. A user needs a good understanding of the market, but they are often the first to admit they are not experts. It takes know-how, experience and time, to avoid making bad investments and get a reliable measuring system. “ONE FOR EVERYTHING” So its time to challenge this laborious, stressful and time-consuming process. It’s being turned on its head with a new radar sensor generation. Florian Burgert, one of the closely involved radar product
ON THE COVER managers says. “We now offer one radar level sensor for all applications, regardless of liquids or bulk solids: it’s called a VEGAPULS 6X. The sensor selection is simpler than ever, in a few mouse clicks and key strokes, your selection is selected and tailored to suit. Of course a radar specialist is on hand for advice and consultation; online, by phone or in person.” This new way of selection makes it easier for the customer and specialist to collaborate, too. At the heart is not just the first, but a second-generation in-house radar chip designed specifically for level measurement. “The result consolidates three decades of radar experience”, says VEGA product manager Jürgen Skowaisa, “In scope and functionality, this chip is unique. With low energy consumption, super-high sensitivity, universal applicability, as well as a direct connection of chip and antenna system, this delivers maximum performance.” ALL-ROUND PROTECTION For safety, VEGAPULS 6X offers SIL 2/3 with class-leading functional safety characteristics to IEC 61511. It also offers a first in “cybersecurity”, meeting IEC 62443-4-2 standard for system security, but at the sensor level. The continuous, internal self-diagnosis system is one of the most comprehensive in the market, delivering higher plant availability, and also better sensor performance. Focusing on the application Jürgen sums up: “It’s about maximum simplification. Until now, there were many different sensor models for an application. With the VEGAPULS 6X, there is just one sensor for all.” Even setup and commissioning, is reduced to a minimum. “Our customers can even order a sensor ready calibrated and pre-set for the application. Which means it just needs installing and connection.” adds Skowaisa. “It doesn’t get any easier than that.” A PROVEN PLATFORM This brand new radar still maintains its roots in the well-established plics® platform, with compatibility and close affinity to all existing process devices from the manufacturer. This offers benefits of familiarity and commonality, and future cross-platform developments, perfectly demonstrated with the Bluetooth option brought
out in 2018, which was instantly compatible to all plics® transmitters from 2002. A RADAR MADE FOR PEOPLE This latest radar level technology features five main innovations: higher (cyber and process) safety, better self-diagnosis, new dedicated radar chip technology with wider application capabilities for simpler selection and adjustment. Jürgen Skowaisa summarises; “Our technology has reached such a high level today that reliable measurement is no longer the issue. With VEGAPULS 6X, you get the right sensor for the application, but we still pride ourselves that our engineers are always there for customer support, partnership and collaboration.” Jurgen concludes, “Now, the user no longer has to worry about model numbers or technology – with 6X the measurement will simply work.” More information available at www.vega.com/ radar Bulk Solids Today

MIXERS, BLENDERS & DRYERS
WEISHARDT BLENDS GELATIN AND COLLAGEN WITH XXL LINDOR MIXERS The first company to super-size their mixer and, in effect, extended the Lindor product range to the XXL L25000 in the 2004, was French gelatin pioneer: Weishardt. The concept was simple enough; they required a large capacity industrial blender the size of a tanker truck tank for the homogenous mixing of gelatin powder and granulate. The realization of the concept was, however, far from simple. Flash forward to today, their 3rd XXL Lindor mixer has just been installed in their newly opened plant in Graulhet, France where collagen is being blended. A BESPOKE SOLUTION IN MIXING TECHNOLOGY
Weishardt’s need for a 25,000-liter mixer drove the innovation which resulted in the Lindor L25000, the world’s largest powder mixer of its kind. At the time of the inquiry 18 years ago, the Lindor factory was not structurally capable of hoisting such a giant. A solid 20 tons of metal with a 12,5-ton rotating mass; it was even too heavy for the factory floors to bear. As Head of Engineering, Akko van der Lee, who led the original project team, fondly recalls: “We improved our building infrastructure due to that project.” One example being the installation of a 20-ton special overhead crane. There were also limitations of know-how. At the start, Lindor did not have the experience from a prior, similarscale project nor the advantage of modern engineering technology. Yet the machine and design durability have withstood nearly 20 years of ongoing mass gelatin production. CONTINUOUS INNOVATION IN LINDOR PRODUCTS
To date, Weishardt runs 3 Lindor L25000 mixers in 3 factory locations: Their latest order just installed in their newly opened production site, the original machine that is still running in their pork gelatin plant also located in Graulhet, France, and their second mixer, delivered in 2006, running in another gelatin production site in Montreal, Canada. The ongoing and close collaboration between Weishardt and Lindor has driven new innovations in mixing technology. Since the delivery of the original machine, the most notable innovation has been in the frame of the machines. After a service visit in 2006, it became apparent that the effort required to disassemble the carrying wheel could be minimized through an improvement in the design of the inlet and outlet. Therefore, a small detail of the design has been changed so that the carrying wheel can be disassembled more easily. In 2004 the inlet and outlet were rectangular but are now round as a standard. This allows the product to flow more easily and ensures that little to no residue will be found in the inlet and outlet. Furthermore, much development has been done over the years on the design of the wheel itself. These improvements enable the Lindor team to provide a higher level of service. SUITABILITY FOR GELATIN AND COLLAGEN MIXING
According to Madame Régine Berbon, Director of Blending at Weishardt, the value of Lindor machines
is in the quality of product they are able to achieve and the ability to mix and match batches to meet client and application requirements. In gelatin and collagen mixing, there are critical demands of a mixer. One of which is the capability to blend the powders and pellets without heating them up. An increase in temperature during the mixing process causes gelatin to become sticky and form lumps. Furthermore, the delivered lot must reach the desired homogeneity without any breakage of pellets and powder particles, which create dust. Lindor mixers do not heat the product during the mixing process and deliver excellent homogeneity in combination with little to no breakage and dust formation. LARGE BATCH MIXING WITH THE L25000
Lindor mixers suitable for gelatin and collagen mixing can be ordered in a range of sizes. The L25000 is best suited for large-scale production. In Weishardt’s case, they need very large machines to meet production capacity and to keep batch-testing efforts and costs low. Moreover, they need the ability to mix and match large quantities to meet client and application requirements. With the L25000, they have minimized the time lost to mixing and matching many smaller batches to complete a lot for a certain order.
High Efficiency Drying or Cooling of Bulk Solids The Bella dryer/cooler offers thermal efficiencies to 80 percent or better because air flows around material while it is suspended in the weightless zone. The result is a more consistent material.

RECYCLING & WASTE MANAGEMENT
WEEE WASTE PLASTIC AND SRF RECOVERY To assist with material decontamination of the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) material processed at Enva’s plastic recycling and recovery facility in Lincolnshire, UK. Enva employed the services of Impact Air Systems to provide a material separation solution that would remove contamination, improve current capacity, and enable operations to continue to grow. Enva recycles and recovers a large percentage of small domestic WEEE material generated annually in the UK. Its facilities around the UK and Ireland recycle and recover materials ranging from plastics, metals, wood, oil, glass aggregates for re-use in manufacturing and for energy conversion. Enva’s sink float system, used for the processing of plastics, was being compromised with heavy contamination from the material passing through it, so a density separation system was required to remove the light fibres, dust, and other residue from the rigid plastic material stream. The contaminated material was sent to Impact’s test facility for a trial run through the Zigzag Air Classifier (ZAC), a tried and tested solution, popular in the recycling and resource recovery industry for its effective ability to utilise air technology and density separation to clean valuable materials from contaminants. Impact’s test facility provided outstanding results, with the input material being cleaned to an exceptional level, which ultimately resulted in the sale of a ZAC800. For the plastic processing company, the ZAC800 handles up to 14 tonnes per hour at a bulk density of 350kg/m³, however as the ZAC is also available in a 1200mm wide version, compared to the 800mm, and is therefore capable of processing material at an even higher throughput. Project Manager, James Anderson commented on the installation: 20

RECYCLING & WASTE MANAGEMENT “As an existing customer of Impact Air Systems, it was a natural decision to contact them with regards to the additional requirements of the plastic recovery process. We have a great relationship with Impact and have always been more than satisfied with their solutions. The ZAC works extremely well as part of our process and only took a week to install. The results are impressive and have resolved the issues we were experiencing with the high volume of contaminants hindering the sink float process. The ZAC has also decreased costs due to the contaminants/SRF material being removed earlier in the process before getting wet. We highly recommend Impact’s ZAC for its ability to recover our materials effectively, its low maintenance, ease of use and quick return on investment of around 8 months.” Carl Henson, Technical Sales Manager for Impact Air Systems, sold the system to Enva and said about the solution: “ENVA’s efforts in diverting valuable material from landfill are commendable, so to be involved with the upgrades of its recovery process was a privilege. The ZAC800 was the obvious solution to meet Enva’s requirements of decontaminating the WEEE material stream and the results spoke for themselves. The ZAC has many features that ensures it is robust, reliable, easy to maintain for the customer, making is an easy choice. Quick access points also allow for unblocking if larger parts manage to make their way through to the ZAC or if there is a material build up. This is the ultimate solution for material recovery and with the return on investment being so quick, our customers are always more than satisfied.” Impact Air Systems has developed various cost-efficient systems for the recycling industry around the world. Its innovative system design and well-engineered components ensure maximum efficiency, speeding up the sorting task, improving the throughput and quality of recycled material grades.
Its separation systems provide convenient solutions for waste recovery and sorting scenarios across the waste management sector, making processes efficient and cost effective. Bulk Solids Today

SPECIAL FEATURE
THE BEVERAGE INDUSTRY IS RAISING A GLASS TO WAREHOUSE AUTOMATION With increasingly fickle consumers demanding new brands and flavours all the time, drink manufacturers are continuously looking to add to their product offerings. As a result, across the beverage industry, SKU numbers have proliferated noticeably in recent years and this has left many manufacturers and distributors struggling to find the space needed to store growing ranges within their existing warehouses and distribution centres. The need to make the most of every available square foot of storage capacity and move more inventory around the building with optimum efficiency has made the idea of automating key intralogistics functions such as the transportation of loads and the retrieval and put-away of pallets within racking schemes, more and more attractive to beverage distributors and manufacturers alike. And the case for automation has been further strengthened by the fact that the additional labour that would traditionally have been recruited to safely and cost-effectively handle the rising stock levels within beverage warehouses and DCs, is becoming difficult and costly to attract. Indeed, a recent survey found that nearly half of beverage distributors consider the shrinking labour pool to be the biggest threat to the smooth running of their supply chains. Of course, like other sectors, the beverage industry is also dealing with the fall-out from the pandemic and the surge in e-commerce sales. Consumers have become used to buying drinks – particularly alcohol - online and having their orders delivered the same day, but this type of order fulfillment operation requires totally different storage and picking strategies to those deployed for fulfilling replenishment stock orders for supermarkets and other retail outlets. The space constraints generated by the need to hold more SKUs and the shorter pick times and quicker throughput rates needed to meet the delivery expectations of internet shoppers added to the fact that the labour crisis is leaving companies with little alternative but to hire inexperienced warehouse 22

personnel, have heightened the risk of the kind of accidents and damage to equipment, building infrastructure and stock – not to mention the injuries to workers. So, both soft and alcoholic drink manufacturers and distributors are under growing pressure to optimise storage solutions to make the most of the people and space they have available. Increasingly, this means deploying some form of automation. Automating those aspects of the warehousing operation that follow a predictable pattern makes a lot of sense and relatively recent developments in automation technology have seen the emergence of flexible and scalable products that deliver a notably faster return-on-investment compared to the type of often costly fixed assets that, at one time, were considered central to any automated warehouse project. These days adopting automation no longer requires every aspect of the warehouse or distribution centre to be automated – just the parts of it that will benefit most and, as a result, this sophisticated technology is within financial reach of SMEs as well as the biggest players. So, introducing warehouse automation has become a multi-phased project and by applying a systematic approach to identify the most common intralogistics functions and aspects of the material flow process, systems can be designed that fit the user’s needs and drive productivity, efficiency and lower overall supply chain costs.
SPECIAL FEATURE IMPROVED SAFETY Despite the noteworthy efforts over many years of such respected organisations as the Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA), the British Industrial Truck Association (BITA) and the United Kingdom Warehousing Association (UKWA) to shine a spotlight on the often devastating consequences of lift truck accidents, the number of workplace accidents involving forklifts remains obstinately high. Indeed, according to the Health and Safety Executive, a worker in the transport and distribution sector suffers a serious injury as a result of an incident involving a lift truck every single day of the year. Forklifts colliding when entering or leaving an aisle, trucks overturning and machines colliding with pedestrians within a warehouse or other industrial site, are among the most common type of accidents recorded. In the overwhelming majority of cases, responsibility for the mishap is initially deemed to lie with the truck operator. And, in a beverage warehouse where palletised loads of glass bottles are often handled, the risk to forklift operators and pedestrian personnel of serious injury from, for example, a dropped pallet of wine cases, is significant. Obviously any possibility of driver-error is removed by the introduction of automation, such as driverless forklift technology. Automated driverless forklift trucks follow the route around the warehouse that they have been programmed to follow, so the likelihood of an automated truck damaging either the warehouse building, the storage system within it or the load being carried is virtually zero. This built-in safety functionality also means that the risk of the equipment causing injury to warehouse personnel working in the same area as an automated forklift is minimal. COST SAVING A recent study by Logistics UK showed that in 2019, 79,000 EU nationals left the UK logistics industry – around 7,000 of whom were lift truck drivers. The exodus is thought to have gathered pace over the past 18 months and, with the Covid crisis adding high rates of staff absenteeism to the mix, the number of qualified lift truck operators in the UK is estimated to be down by some 25 per cent on the figure needed to run the nation’s forklift fleet. The widening gap between supply and demand, means that warehouse workers’ wages are rising. In November 2020 the average warehouse worker’s salary advertised on online job-search engine Adzuna was £19,995 per annum. By November 2021 the remuneration for order pickers was up 8 per cent year-on-year. Over the same period, vacancies for warehouse jobs were up 143%. Given that human labour is already one of the most significant costs associated with running a
warehouse the handsome financial packages that are now required to tempt warehouse staff are prompting more and more logistics companies to seek new ways of providing the same service levels with less staff. For many, this means switching to automation. AGV’s – such as Toyota’s Autopilot series – offer several benefits in addition to delivering lower labour costs, including reductions in product and building infrastructure damage and increased productivity. These notable advantages bring a rapid return on investment. Toyota’s automated forklifts (AGV’s), for example, deliver a typical ROI period of between 12 and 36 months. PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY With manual handling technology that relies, to a large extent, on the ability of people to perform their tasks safely, efficiently and without mishap, problems with inventory tracking, picking, receiving and put-away can interrupt the flow of goods through a warehouse with alarming – and costly - regularity. But with automated handling systems goods reach their destination within the store on time every time. Of course, manual – and often repetitive - tasks use up staff resources and effort and ensuring they are completed properly can waste a lot of valuable management time. As a result, focus can be lost and key tasks may fail to receive the attention that they should. This is when mistakes happen. And, when mistakes creep in at any stage of the intralogistics process there is a real likelihood that the entire process will suffer, to the obvious detriment of the business. Automating repetitive manual warehouse functions gives management the comfort of knowing that the flow of materials through the store will continue uninterrupted, leaving them free to focus on other matters that require their expertise. In addition to reliable production flows, automation also reduces the kind of damage to goods that is unavoidable with any process involving human labour; delivers greater order picking accuracy; makes more efficient use of the available storage space; and, cuts the (rising) cost of employing increasingly hard to find workers. Toyota Material Handling has successfully delivered more than 270 automated projects featuring over 1,000 automated guided vehicles across Europe. We work with our customers to determine the specific challenges they face and tackle them one step at a time. Breaking the process down into small modules gives clients essential scalability and means that, if they wish to, customers can partially automate their processes while retaining the option to introduce more automated technology as future demands change.
