B&B ATTACHMENTS SERVICE OFFER

A

s the UK’s leading independent distributor of forklift truck attachments and masts, B&B Attachments customers know that they can rely on a level of pre and post sales care and advice unequalled in the materials handling industry. B&B knows that every forklift attachment requires regular site maintenance to ensure that any safety related issues are identified and quickly rectified. This can usually be completed on site, ensuring that any costly downtime is kept to an absolute minimum, and your fleet continues to work at its maximum efficiency levels. A fixed service contact from B&B Attachments allows this essential maintenance to be carried out at a set fixed cost for the period of the contract. The fixed service contract includes the cost of any call outs and replacement parts required, except Keg Clamp tines, forks and rubber pads. The contract excludes repairs due

to misuse, abuse or damage. Any repair work due to these items can be quoted separately. A service contract safeguards your attachment and ensures it is maintained as per the manufactures recommendation. All B&B engineers are fully qualified, and B&B can demonstrate competency due to regular training to ensure they are suitably up to date with all elements of specialist forklift attachment engineering. The B&B service engineering team is unrivalled in its experience levels in this field in the UK. B&B’s team work from fully equipped service vans which are based strategically throughout the UK. Each B&B service van is a mobile workshop fully equipped with test equipment, hose making equipment and welding apparatus to carry out most repairs on-site. The B&B engineers are able to carry out a range of diagnostic checks on specific types of attachments to ensure

that your equipment is kept at peak performance. All engineers have access to information databases which provide comprehensive technical advice on any of the attachments or masts in the B&B range. Additionally, each van carries a substantial range of the most commonly required parts and spares. If the correct spare part is not already on board the service vans, field engineers have instant access to B&B’s Parts Department to check availability and cost – if necessary ordering the required part for overnight delivery. B&B also offers a

complete refurbishment service - from minor repairs to total factory rebuilds of your existing fork lift truck attachments. If on-site repairs are impractical, B&B offer extensive production and workshop facilities and skilled engineers are available for all repairs and major refurbishment. Fabrication, product finishing, strip down, inspection, repair, steam-cleaning through to re-spraying and delivery back to your premises ‘as new’ are all part of the B&B offer. You can measure your reputation against its standards of engineering excellence. www.bandbattachments.com

The broadband noise results can be recorded simultaneously in three acoustic profiles, which enable measurements to be taken with three

and used for a wide range of outdoor industrial monitoring applications where measurements are required over a period of time, ranging from days to months, and where a hand-held sound level meter taking on the spot recordings would not be suitable. It can be set up to send email or SMS messages when threshold levels are exceeded. Svantek’s SV   258 PRO incorporates a SVAN 958A Class 1 four-channel sound and vibration analyser for applications that require simultaneous Class 1 sound and vibration assessment.

The intelligent charging unit enables use of a solar panel without expensive controllers and heavy batteries. The case is fitted with very robust, waterproof connectors (military standard) and has an IP 65 external power supply. The system uses a low noise, hermetically sealed tri-axial piezoelectric accelerometer enabling the outdoor use without additional enclosures. The accelerometers’ signal ground is insulated from the mounting surface and outer case to prevent ground loops. All accessories fit conveniently into a second carrying case. It provides broadband

different filters (e.g. A, C, Z) as well as 3 different detector time constants (e.g. Fast, Slow, Impulse). The SVAN 958A can be easily removed from the case and used as hand-held vibration and sound level meter. The monitoring station uses the 3G modem for the remote communication with Internet. The relay server, SvanNET, supports the connection between PC and station allowing the usage of all types of SIM cards with the system, regardless if they have public or private IP. The connection over SvanNET

gives access to the status of the noise monitoring station via mobile phone or tablet. Svantek’s SV 258 PRO is available with a range of optional functions including SvanPC++ remote communication software package and FFT for dominant frequency determination. In building / ground vibration mode, the 1/1 octave analysis is recorded as velocity RMS spectrum while the 1/3 octave analysis is available as an alternative to building / ground vibration mode. www.svantek.co.uk

MOTAN INNOVATION AWARDS – ‘MIA’ On the 21st October 2016, motan announced and honoured the winners of the motan innovation award 2016.

A

top-class jury evaluated in advance the nominated solutions intensively and detailed in regards to level of innovation, relevance for practical application in the plastics industry, and technical feasibility and market potential within materials handling. Instead of the usual three, four innovations for different functions of material logistics and handling have made it onto the podium: Along with first and second place, the jury awarded two third places. Prize money of over 20.000 euro was donated by motan holding gmbh. 1ST PLACE: LUDWIG REISSNER With the Matrixkoppler, an automated material station for small conveying systems, Ludwig Reissner has made material changes even more efficient and safe. Conventional material stations require manual switching of the hoses leading to the material loaders during material changes. The Matrixkoppler automated the material allocation with a newly designed multiple switch. This way, contamination from neighbouring lines can be prevented. This is practical, cheap, and completely new. motan is honouring this development with prize money of 10.000 euro. 2ND PLACE: TEAM FABIAN KIENZLER Together with Arnulf Hörtnagl, Marc Hiefer, and Oscar Lattner, Fabian Kienzler has developed an alternative method for drying of granules. At the core of the innovation 12

Bulk Solids Today

is the use of an inductive heating element – for energy transfer via radiation. Here, pre-warmed air flows through the granules to extract moisture. This new automated drying is efficient and can be controlled precisely. The idea was born while searching for a dew point sensor. motan is honouring this development with prize money of 5.000 euro. 3RD PLACE: PETER HAUPT Energy which is used for drying and dosing in usual material flow constellations, is used more than once by the dry dosing unit developed by Peter Haupt. The idea is focussed on dramatically reducing energy consumption – and therefore costs. Operation can then also be designed more ergonomically. motan is honouring this development with prize money of 2.500 euro. 3RD PLACE: KARL WOLFGANG Better utilisation of material and increased cleanliness are the benefits of using the Octa-FlowBag by Karl Wolfgang. If octabins are emptied with an automated conveying system in production, then material normally remains in the corners and must be sucked out manually. This new development transports remaining material automatically into the middle of the octabin,

where it can be removed easily. motan is honouring this development with prize money of 2.500 euro. The prizes were awarded by Sandra Füllsack, CEO of motan holding gmbh, as well as the four jury members. The submissions for the next mia 2018 awards will start in January 2017 and the prize giving ceremony will take place in two years’ time at the Fakuma exhibition in October 2018 in Friedrichshafen. THE JURY The independent jury chosen to decide the best innovation is made up of experts who possess immense theoretical and practical knowledge in plastics production and processing. • Prof. Dr. Martin Bastian, institution director of SKZ in Würzburg. • Prof. Dr.-Ing. Carsten Manz, president of the Hochschule Konstanz for applied sciences. • Dr.-Ing. Peter Faatz head of process development for plastic technology at INA Werks Schaeffler. • Karl Miller, head of motan-colortronic Ltd. in Great Britain.

THE MOTAN GROUP The motan group based in Constance on Lake Constance was founded in 1947. As leading provider for sustainable raw material handling, they operate in the areas injection moulding, blow moulding, extrusion, and compounding. EXACT BUNKER PROFILE MEASUREMENT

A

new ship unloader

has been installed in a coke bunker plant on the site of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH in Salzgitter, Germany. The bunker is being loaded either from ship stowages on the canal site and from train wagons on the land side. It is divided into several bunker bins, whose volume can be determined by 3D laser technology now. In order to determine the exact bunker volume contact-less measuring systems by LASE have been applied, which are highly suitable because of their high accuracy, high reproducibility and the robust design. Two 2D laser scanners out of the LASE 2000D-11x Series are mounted on the main girder of the ship unloader, such that their scan planes is projected vertically downwards and parallel to the main girder. Both laser scanners deliver 2D profiles where the cross section of the bunker below them is shown. The laser measurement system starts measuring automatically at crane travel and being actuated by a SPS. During crane travel the created 2D profiles are collected and converted into a 3D volume model by the discharging position. Thus the

volume of totally eight bunkers is updated permanently and the calculated result is displayed on screen. For the determination of the exact volume even the separating walls or other objects can be excluded from the calculation through suppression areas. The system can be operated intuitively due to user-oriented dialogue control and configuration wizards for simple commissioning. The application has a high versatility and can be used for volume and profile measurements in several bunker plant types. This specific software derives from the product line CEWS Bulk Volume Module and distinguishes oneself in the use within rough industrial environments. LASE is one of the leading companies for laser-based sensor systems in the field of industrial applications. They offer innovative and productive solutions by combining state-of-the-art laser hardware technology and sophisticated software applications. The broad range of precise and reliable 1D, 2D and 3D laser systems can be used for several measurement tasks in numerous kinds of industries. www.lase.de

LATEST HIRE PRODUCTS FROM DOOSAN BOBCAT AT EHS 2017 Doosan Bobcat EMEA will be presenting the latest products for the plant and tool hire industry from the company’s Bobcat and Doosan Portable Power businesses at the 2017 Executive Hire Show in Coventry from 8-9 February next year.

L

aunched in 2007, the Executive Hire Show is the UK’s leading exhibition for the tools, equipment and plant hire industry. It is a trade-only event open to hire executives throughout the UK and Ireland, and it also attracts hire industry visitors from Europe and beyond. Senior executives from the procurement and purchasing departments of the top ten national hire businesses attend the show, along with large numbers of personnel from the many independent hire companies in UK, who typically make up 90% of the attendees at the show. Visitors to the Doosan Bobcat stand will see a display of Portable Power equipment that is representative of the many hire solutions available from Doosan Portable Power such as portable compressors, portable generators, portable light towers and construction tools. The stand will also feature the market-leading Bobcat ranges of micro- and miniexcavators, skid-steer loaders, compact tracked loaders and telehandlers. Completing the stand will be a display of attachments including the unique range from Bobcat, comprising over 80 different types of attachment for Bobcat loaders, excavators and telehandlers. The market-leading portable compressor range 14

from Doosan Portable Power is one of the most comprehensive in the world, offering a full range of 24 different portable compressor models, with free air deliveries between 2 and 45 m³/min and operating pressures between 7 and 25 bar. All the compressors can be supplied with a number of important options as exemplified by the 7/31G and 7/41G compressorgenerators supplying 3.0 m3/min (105 cfm) and 4.0 m3/min (141 cfm), respectively, of compressed air at 7 bar (100 psig). Both incorporate an optional 6 kVA generator to meet a specific requirement in utility work, particularly in the gas and water industries, for a compressor-generator combination that provides both electrical power for lights, tools and fusion welding and compressed air for powering breakers and other pneumatic equipment in parallel with the electrical equipment. Every Doosan compressor is ‘built to be used’ providing the highest level of durability, productivity and serviceability. Well-positioned fuel tanks featuring large size fillers limit the risk of fuel spillage.

Security features include a lockable canopy and lockable steel instrument panel cover. In addition, a folding lift bail reduces the risk of theft by keeping the lifting eye within the compressor enclosure. The compressors have an intuitive, simple keystart sequence, ideal for rental companies because of the reduced risk of machine abuse by untrained operators. The user-friendly control panel offers an open layout of instruments and warning indicators. Doosan Portable Power also offers a comprehensive

of the plant and tool hire industry. Bobcat also offers a unique range of attachments, comprising over 80 different types of attachment for Bobcat loaders, excavators and telehandlers. The very popular, easyto-transport E08 and E10 micro-excavators are the smallest models in the Bobcat range. The E08 microexcavator is a conventional model with a machine weight of 1028 kg and a maximum digging depth of 1.82 m. The E10 model is a zero tail swing micro-excavator with a maximum digging depth

range of portable generators and lighting products for the plant and tool hire industry. Completing the line-up are construction tools such as air-powered chipping hammers, pickhammers, jackhammers and paving breakers for work in demolition, utilities, quarrying and industrial markets. The stand will also feature products from the marketleading Bobcat ranges of micro- and mini-excavators, skid-steer loaders, compact tracked loaders and telehandlers, all of which are ideally suited to the needs

of 1.82 m and a machine weight of 1066 kg. Both of the microexcavators have a retractable undercarriage that takes the width of the machine down to only 710 mm, allowing easy access through a standard pedestrian doorway for work inside buildings or entry into back yards and gardens through narrow gates. In addition, passage through low headroom openings is aided by the integrated foldable TOPS on both machines. www.bobcat.com. www. doosanportablepower.eu

BARTON FABRICATIONS ACCREDITED TO CE MARK SILOS

B

arton Fabrications, the UK’s largest manufacturer of aluminium storage silos, has achieved accreditation to CE mark its vessels to EN 1090: this ensures compliance with the latest Construction Products Regulations. The standard gives customers the confidence that the silos, pipework, gantries and ladders supplied by Barton, which are all considered structural products, have traceability and conform to mandatory structural requirements. Commenting on the accreditation Mark Barton, Managing Director and owner of Barton Fabrications said: “We are delighted to receive the accreditation as this recognises the high level of design, procurement, manufacturing and quality control standards we adopt. We have further enhanced our processes as part of the accreditation assessment – this has included using coded welders for all structural components and improving our job card system.

“Buyers have a responsibility to ensure that the structural products they procure from their suppliers meet all relevant standards and the CE Marked certification we issue with every silo gives buyers the confidence that they have minimised procurement risk.” The now mandatory Construction Products Regulations replace the Construction Products Directive and dictate that any steel, stainless steel or aluminium construction product, which includes silos, are CE Marked to the harmonised European Standard EN 1090. VORTEX HDPV2 VALVE PROVIDES SOLUTION FOR MICROWAVE-INDUCED PYROLYSIS SYSTEM Ashley Maxwell – Vortex UK and Ireland Sales Manager

A

dvances in material science have led to the creation of high performance materials that offer significant benefits to both brands and consumers alike. Once these products have served their purpose, the challenge is to handle them responsibly; this is the case of plastic aluminium laminate packaging. Enval Ltd. was created in 2006 to answer this environmental challenge. By 2010 Enval had constructed a pilot plant that used the process of microwave induced pyrolysis and created the world’s first solution for recycling plastic aluminium laminates. After the creation of the Enval consortium, the first commercial demonstration plant for the Enval process was built. Pyrolysis is a process in which an organic material, such as paper or plastic, is heated in the absence of oxygen. In the case of the Enval process, the energy to heat up material is supplied by microwaves generators powered by electricity. The high temperature from the microwave-induced pyrolysis causes the molecules of plastic to break down so that the material degrades without combustion or incineration. During the process, aluminium foil remains undamaged and can be recovered in its solid form, clean and ready for reprocessing. As part of the process, Enval had to source a vacuum tight double-dump valve arrangement suitable for handling the hot aluminium foil produced from the microwave process. The valves and the seals had to be suitable for continuous high working temperatures of 150°C / 300°F (Vortex’s seals are designed for 204°C / 400°F continuous use). It also had to be full bore to maintain material flow and robust enough for high cycle frequency with up to 1900 cycles per day. The Vortex Quantum HDPV2 valve was determined to be the ideal solution for this application. The 200mm / 8” diameter valves were suitable for full vacuum and for pressures up to 5 bar / 75 psig. The pneumatically actuated HDPV2 cast aluminium body valves were complete with stainless steel blades and contact parts. The top valve was complete with a self-contained air reservoir so that if the plant suffered a loss of compressed air, the valve could still fail safe to the closed position.

18

Designed to address higher-pressure applications up to 5 bar / 75 psig depending on size, the Vortex HDPV2 sets itself apart from traditional industry slide gates. The rising blade design provides positive material shut-off by means of an O-ring seal on the inlet of the valve. This design feature eliminates the issues related to packing of material causing abrasion to the end seal. VORTEX HDPV2 KEY FEATURES: • Seals fine material in higher aeration or pressure applications • Patented rising blade action ensures optimal seal • Seals protected from blast abrasion • Serviceable while in-line • Does not pack material upon closure • Material construction options available • Gravity flow, dilute phase, or dense phase conveying • Designed to handle abrasive or sticky materials • Horizontal or vertical valve orientation • Open / closed or volume metering of material • Standard sizes: 100mm – 400mm / 4”– 16” Enval has been pleased with the valves’ performances commenting that the valves maintain an excellent seal, even retaining vacuum pressure when unused overnight. NEW DUAL DRIVE SCREEN RESOLVES SCREEN REPLACEMENT ISSUES AT CEMEX ANGERSTEIN WHARF CMB International have now successfully installed the first ‘dual drive’ screen at Angerstein Wharf in London.

O

wned and operated by CEMEX this site is one of the largest operations in the capital supplying over a hundred million tonnes per annum. One of the biggest issues with the twin

processing line at Angerstein has been the replacement of the Cedarapids screens when they failed. CMB had been supplying re-engineered Cedarapids screens as replacements as and when the screens were failing. With twin production lines, each of the four screens at Angerstein is ‘handed’ either left or right. To further exasperate the issue a spare screen is also shared with a sister operation downstream at Northfleet. This works perfectly until the wrong ‘hand’ fails which entails more downtime until the screen is repaired and re-instated in situ. As this is not predictable it has meant that CMB have on occasion swapped the drive to the opposite side to accommodate the position, all of which meant more downtime and maintenance costs. A FAULTLESS IMPROVEMENT: After a site meeting, Martin Brough of CMB and Unit Manager Dave Whitby agreed that a new design that would fit either ‘hand’ would be ideal, and suitable for the Northfleet operation as well.

22

Bulk Solids Today

CMB subsequently designed and manufactured a top drive screen to replace the first existing Cedarapid screen. Dave Whitby-Unit Manager, commented, “the new screen has been faultless to date and has also improved maintenance as the bottom screen can be accessed easily with the drives on the top.” Liam Holland – General Manager CMB, commented, ”With the new CMB screen design, the two on-board motors mean that our screen can sit anywhere within their production line and can replace any of the screens with no extra work required. There are also other benefits because the new screen contains a twin shaft 280 unit that is positioned above the screen side plates, which ensures there are no large holes within the side plates to accommodate the shafts (Cedarapids screens have 3 holes in each side plate). This gives the side plates added strength to cope with a higher G-Force, which is often required for horizontal screening to avoid pegging.” With the first screen being so successful the way forward is to replace the remaining screens within the Angerstein operation. Dave Whitby, further commented, “we are very pleased, CMB have been very supportive and their experience in designing and manufacturing equipment for aggregate processing lines has been clear from day one.” www.cmb.uk.com

FIRST NEW BOBCAT T36120SL 12 M TELEHANDLER IN SCOTLAND R & B Joinery of Inverurie in Aberdeenshire, has purchased Scotland’s first Bobcat T36120SL 12 m telehandler from Balgownie Ltd, the Authorised Bobcat and Doosan dealer for Aberdeenshire, Morayshire, Angus and for much of the Highlands and parts of Perthshire and Kinross-shire.

A

listair Brownie, Managing Director of R & B Joinery, said: “As a busy building contractor working in the rugged countryside of Aberdeenshire and the Highlands, we always have a requirement for telehandlers to effectively act as rough terrain forklifts capable of working on the different types of terrain we encounter when building properties in the area. With both the Bobcat frame-levelling and stabiliser systems on the machine, the T36120SL telehandler allows us to work with great confidence on whatever surface we have to deal with.” FRAME-LEVELLING AND STABILISERS AS STANDARD In the frame-levelling system on the Bobcat T36120SL telehandler, the front oscillating axle piloted by a hydraulic ram is used as a self-levelling device, providing +/- 6° relevelling up to a 50° boom angle and +/- 2° above the 50° boom angle. In addition, thanks to the machine’s overall stability, and whatever the boom angle, the proportionally controlled hydraulic ram can be useful to side-shift when the machine is being used on wheels. The easy-to-use compact stabilisers ensure that the machine’s full capabilities can be used in the most confined working areas, with a minimal loss of reach when deploying the stabilisers. The narrow design of the stabilisers ensures the machine can be placed close to walls and operated in narrow spaces. Optimal steering capabilities, with minimum steering angles, make the machine extremely manoeuvrable and easy to position at any job site, with a very short turning radius with no rear overhang. Alistair Brownie added: “The T36120SL is also a compact telehandler, with a much better turning circle than we‘ve seen on other telehandlers. Where the wheels go, the machine goes too. We were also impressed by the Bobcat telehandler plant in Pontchâteau in France, where substantial investment has been made to enhance quality and to boost production.”

24

Bulk Solids Today

Part of the latest generation of telehandlers from Bobcat with which it shares the same, easily recognisable counterweight design and chassis in black, the T36120SL model incorporates many advanced features including the new Panoramic Cab which has a large parabolic windscreen providing panoramic visibility especially when handling loads at height. In the cab, there is a new dashboard with digital display and ergonomic controls including a joystick with integrated forward/reverse (FNR) control for improved productivity and safety. The state-of-the-art electronics in the new T36120SL telehandler is based on can bus technology allowing smart machine management and monitoring of the main components for easier maintenance. Based around a 100 l/min gear pump with LS valve, the advanced hydraulics feature an active diagnostic system which ensures that in case of hydraulic failure, the machine always remains within safe limits. The T36120SL is powered by the 74.5 kW (100 HP) Deutz Stage IIIB diesel engine, providing plenty of power and torque even in the most difficult ground conditions. The T36120SL has a hydrostatic transmission offering a maximum travel speed of 30 km/h, complemented by an inching function for smooth driving and precise positioning. BUILT FOR CONSTRUCTION AND RENTAL For construction and rental applications, the T36120SL telehandler features an auxiliary hydraulic line and is supplied with a 1.12 m wide foldable pallet forks carriage with backrest and 1200 mm pallet forks as standard. An important safety feature is the Aggravating Movement Arrester (AMA) system which cuts off all aggravating movements to ensure safe use within the working envelope, whatever the attachment used and the type of load (palletised or suspended) being lifted.

BULK MATERIALS HANDLING The T36120SL telescopic handler has a maximum lift capacity of 3.6 tonne. The working envelope has a maximum lift height of 11.87 m and a maximum forward reach of 8.20 m. The T36120SL can be supplied with a wide range of attachments including different types of digging buckets, pallet forks and jibs. COMPLETE RANGE OF BUILDING SERVICES R & B Joinery offers a wide range of services including New Build, House Extension and Commercial projects. The company offers the complete range of construction expertise for clients including individuals and families looking to build or develop their own home(s) and companies building new commercial properties. There is also a comprehensive package for domestic homeowners, from the smallest general improvements to much larger extensions and installations. As well as Bobcat telehandlers, Inverurie-based Balgownie is responsible for sales and servicing of the Bobcat skid-steer and compact tracked loader; compact excavator and attachment ranges in Aberdeenshire, Morayshire, Angus and for much of the Highlands and parts of Perthshire and Kinross-shire. The company is also the Authorised Doosan dealer for the same area. Balgownie Ltd started trading as an engineering company in 1907 in sheet metal work and tank manufacturing, supplying to shipyards, farmers and the food industry before diversifying into the manufacture and supply of dairy equipment. NEW DEVELOPMENTS FOR HIGH-ACCURACY FEEDING AND CONVEYING

A

t K 2016, Coperion K-Tron will present a variety of new developments at stand B19 in hall 14. The new Electronic Pressure Compensation (EPC) system will be shown as well as a modified version of the Smart Flow Meter, which provides high accuracy feeding at high feed rates. The K-Vision line controller will also be on display. INNOVATIVE ELECTRONIC PRESSURE COMPENSATION (EPC) SYSTEM FOR HIGH-ACCURACY COPERION K-TRON LOSS-IN-WEIGHT FEEDERS Coperion K-Tron will present a unique new Electronic Pressure Compensation (EPC) system for their high-accuracy loss-inweight feeders. The main advantages of the new system include improved accuracy and reliability as well as lower initial cost and easier installation compared to traditional mechanical pressure compensation systems. Coperion K-Tron has developed a clever but simple electronic solution for accurate and steady pressure compensation in feeder hoppers and outlets. The modular design incorporates pressure sensors and electronics tailored to interact smoothly with Coperion K-Tron’s KCM feeder control system. Retrofitting options for existing feeders are available. EPC can be installed on a majority of Coperion K-Tron gravimetric feeders in almost any application and all industries. In a closed feeding system, pressure build-up inside a feeder can significantly impair weighing accuracy. The commonly installed mechanical pressure compensation systems are sensitive to structural factors and machine alignment and may therefore be intricate or even unreliable. Coperion K-Tron has now developed a clever but simple electronic solution for accurate and steady pressure compensation in feeder hoppers. The modular design incorporates pressure sensors and electronics tailored to interact smoothly with Coperion K-Tron’s KCM feeder control system. Depending on set-up and requirements, sensors can be positioned on the feeder hopper and, if required, on the material discharge tube. The software implements a self-optimizing compensation algorithm for best performance and dynamics identical to those of Coperion K-Tron’s SFT load cells, which allows for highly accurate feeding results, even in systems with perceivable pressure fluctuations. A separate field evaluation kit allows for the assessment of potential pressure issues in existing installations. SMART FLOW METER FOR RELIABLE METERING, REGISTERING OR MONITORING OF BULK MATERIAL FLOWS In high rate applications, the Smart Flow Meter provides high accuracy feeding, at feed rates of up to 200,000 dm³/hr (7,000 ft³/hr). In addition to a lower purchase cost than a large loss-in-weight feeder, the Smart Flow Meter offers lower maintenance costs 26

Bulk Solids Today

and reduced headroom. Two models are available: K-SFM-275-B and K-SFM-350-B, depending on application requirements. The Smart Flow Meter is often employed in PE resin pelletizing processes, where it accurately and gently feeds the main component, PE powder, into the pelletizing extruder. Other areas of application include plastics, chemicals, animal feed, cement, coal, glass, aluminium, grain, etc. Typical particle size is approximately 0.02 mm up to 10 mm. The Smart Flow Meter is suitable for free-flowing bulk materials such as powders, granules, chips or fibres. With no moving parts, the K-SFM has no mechanical impact on the bulk material. The bulk material flows by gravity into the upper measuring channel, an inclined chute mounted on a force transducer where the force, acting perpendicularly on the chute is measured as mass. The bulk material then flows into the lower, vertical channel which determines velocity or acceleration rate. From the signals of these two sensors the flow rate is determined per unit of time. K-VISION LINE CONTROLLER MAXIMIZES YOUR PRODUCT QUALITY WHILE MINIMIZING THE NEED FOR DIRECT SUPERVISION K-Vision™ is a graphical operator interface for controlling up to 16 devices such as feeders or vacuum receivers in a single process line. K-Vision uses a 12.1-inch color LCD display together with a touchscreen as the primary operator input mechanism. BULK MATERIALS HANDLING

PRECISE FEEDING OF DIFFICULT BULK MATERIAL WITH GERICKE Carbon – well-measured and actively used for the environment and for consumption – Dr. Andreas Husmann,.

A

ctivated carbon is used in industrial and commercial cleaning processes due to its characteristic properties. It is used to remove and filter out unwanted substances from liquid and gaseous mixtures. A precise feeding of the activated carbon is indispensable – both to properly control the cleaning process and to use the expensive raw material activated carbon (well over 1,500 € / t) in a cost-efficient manner.

WHY IS IT CALLED “ACTIVATED”? • Activated carbon consists of over 90 % carbon • It has a highly porous structure – one gram has a surface area of up to 1,500 m², i.e. only a few grams exceed the surface area of a football pitch • The carbon is activated by treating it at high temperatures with gases or chemicals • This produces a special structure with a large surface area • It is used in applications to adsorb substances and thereby to filter and remove them

ACTIVATED CARBON IN WASTE WATER TREATMENT With the increasing demands from environmental l egislation, operators of waste water treatment plants need to add additional cleaning steps to the established waste water treatment process. They must ensure that substances which previously passed through the cleaning process are removed as fully as possible from the waste water. Toxic residues of pharmaceutical materials, hormones and other organic components were being removed here. These enter the water cycle from the manufacturing industry, by their use on humans or animals, for example, and are therefore present in the waste water found in communal and industrial sewage treatment plants. The use of activated carbon allows such toxic materials or those which have poor biodegradability, to be removed from the waste water. To do this, activated carbon is added to the waste WASTE WATER CLEAR STAGE WITH ACTIVATED CARBON FEEDING Gericke’s proven feeding technology for waste water treatment – end customers emphasise: “ ...It was particularly important for us to have as accurate feeding as possible of the prescribed activated carbon quantities as well as a secure and trouble-free operation of the plant with the least maintenance possible”.

water as a cleaning step and, after the materials have been adsorbed, it is removed again. The contaminated activated carbon is then sent for thermal disposal along with the sewage sludge. The extended cleaning stage using powdered activated carbon is also known as the process of Ulm. There are proven systems marketed under the AK-DOS® brand for safe storage, highly-accurate feeding and efficient suspension creation using powdered activated carbon. They have already

BULK MATERIALS HANDLING been implemented in several large plant systems. Together with Sülzle Kopf Anlagenbau (Plant Technology/ Engineering and Construction), Gericke has developed a system with a high level of operational reliability. The AK-DOS® system offers you safe storage of powdered activated carbon with demand-controlled feeding and dispersion as well as system control. The tailored interaction of all the modules results in higher dosing accuracy. After the highly-accurate and secure feeding, the powdered activated charcoal is thoroughly wetted with water to create a suspension with a high elimination rate. When adding activated carbon, both the quantity of the activated carbon to the waste water volume and possibly the contamination level of the waste water with pollutants need to be taken into account. If the amount added is too low, there is an inadequate cleaning effect, overdosing should be avoided for economic reasons. Quick adjustment of the amount being added to cope with changing waste water volumes (e.g. when there is an increase during rainfall) with accurate feeding over a large performance range is therefore essential. The figure shows a mechanical tare-compensated gravimetric feeding system using two Gericke DIW50 loss in weight feeders for waste water treatment. They continuously feed according to NAMUR 40 over a performance range of 2 to 40 kg/h, to generate an efficient suspension which is then mixed with the waste water flow in a contact basin. In the contact basin, the materials to be eliminated are adsorbed. Finally, the contaminated powdered activated carbon is drawn off with the sewage sludge or separated using a filter system. A hopper to refill the feeders is also included in the feeding plant. Refilling is done from a storage silo using a rotary valve and a reversible conveying screw to the hopper and from there into the feeders. The EasyDos Pro, which was developed by Gericke, is used to control the continuous feeding process. This communicates with the superior process control system from Sülzle Kopf Anlagenbau (Plant Technology/Engineering and Construction). The feeding system shown has been used successfully and without any faults in a communal waste water operation since October 2011.

performance range of 2 to 40 l/h based on the volume of the activated carbon. With typical amounts used being from a few grams to the maximum legally permitted in Germany of 100 grams per hectolitre of grape juice or wine, the required quantities can be added to the wine being fined in a short time.

EXPERTISE IN ACTIVATED CARBON FEEDING Gericke is a specialist in highly-precise, continuous feeding of bulk materials and, with its modular product range, a successful partner for leading system suppliers in the environmental and food sectors. The modularity allows tailored volumetric or gravimetric feeding equipment to be provided to meet the special requirements of the plant (loss in weight feeders / LIW feeders). These are used to provide the activated carbon metered to the required quantity accurately as well as securely and continuously in the follow-up process. Bulk materials which are difficult to convey – like activated carbon (low bulk-density, different grain sizes with a variable finedust proportion, formation of agglomerates) – present no problem to Gericke feeders, where accuracies of below 1 % and better can be achieved when feeding. Along with activated carbon feeding systems for water treatment, Gericke has also supplied systems for flue gas cleaning using activated carbon which are used in steel plants and waste incineration plants, for example. www.gericke.net

ACTIVATED CARBON IN WINE PRODUCTION When producing wine, activated carbon is used as part of the fining process, along with other materials such as minerals or organic compounds. The fining is used to clarify the wine and for biochemical stabilisation. Any turbidity, discolouring and unwanted substances are removed from the wine. Activated carbon is particularly useful in removing undesired tastes and also for reducing coloured substances in white wine. Activated carbon is usually added to the unfermented grape juice or to the wine. After a certain period of time to act, the wine is poured off, or the activated carbon is filtered out. The activated carbon must be used in a controlled way and exactly dosed so that all the desired substances remain in the wine. If this is not done, there could be a loss of quality with regards to the flavours and colours of the finished wine as the activated carbon does not work selectively against the unwanted substances in wine, rather it adsorbs numerous organic compounds. This means that, along with the experience of the master vintner, precise and reliable feeding equipment is needed. Gericke is a specialist for continuous and exact feeding and has already delivered numerous feeding devices to well-known wine producers. WORKING OUTSIDE IN WINTER? CONSIDER A DIFFERENT TYPE OF PALLET TRUCK

W

orking inside or even outside in the warmer, summer months can feel like a dream. No adverse weather conditions to factor in and an almost streamlined process means it can be all too easy to forget about the impacts the weather can have on equipment and processes. Bad weather, such as severely cold temperatures, snow, ice and even torrential rain can play havoc with procedures when working outside or in partly sheltered warehouses,

difficulty so are common sights in builders’ yards and any sites that offer rough ground. Perfect additions to workforces that operate outside, their heavyduty tyres make them perfect for moving goods over slippery and uneven surfaces. Phil, adds, “Now is the

sometimes causing businesses to shut down completely due to unsafe working conditions or them simply not being able to get the work completed. Pallet Truck Shop, one of the country’s finest providers of pallet trucks, aerial work platforms and accessories, has underlined the importance of investing in correct equipment in order to ensure work can carry on – no matter what the weather has in store. Phil Chesworth, Managing Director at Pallet Truck Shop, said, “The British weather is notoriously unreliable, but that doesn’t mean that equipment has to be too. Thinking ahead and investing in the correct equipment before the weather turns can really make a difference and ensure production doesn’t stop.” Galvanised and stainless steel pallet trucks are two of the best investments when it comes to dealing with hostile weather conditions thanks to their tough nature and resistance to rust and corrosion. This means that not only can they cope with everything the Great British weather can throw at it, but it will also remain fully operational. Galvanised equipment is where a zinc coating is applied to conventional steel to prevent corrosion. As stainless steel is one of the most robust metals when it comes to corrosion because of its water-resistant properties, both of these types of trucks are ideal for use outside, as well as other areas where environment is not able to be controlled. Rough terrain trucks are also an ideal addition to fleets in the winter months thanks to their tough nature. They have been designed to travel over ground where ordinary pallet trucks have

time for businesses to start thinking about what the winter weather may hold. Leaving it to the last minute can cause significant losses in production should the weather suddenly change. And in this increasingly competitive marketplace, that is the last thing any business needs.” To find out more about Pallet Truck Shop and browse their range available to purchase online, visit the website: www.pallettruckshop.co.uk

CLEAN, SAFE & HYGIENIC MATERIALS HANDLING

M

aterials handling specialist J D Neuhaus (JDN) can provide a whole host of innovative hoist solutions for working environments that demand high levels of cleanliness and hygiene. Industries such as food, beverage, pharmaceutical and chemical must all conform to strict regulations when it comes to clean working practices. Utilising the appropriate materials handling equipment, therefore, is a paramount requirement and to meet this, JDN has created a nickel-plated hoist to ensure the highest level of cleanliness. Designed specifically for clean operating environments, this hygienically robust hoist can be configured in their standard Profi TI series for 0.5 to 1 tonne, or big bag handling unit and low headroom trolley hoist for 1 tonne. All of these feature outer surfaces plated in 25 µm thick nickel. Where Profi hoists are required to run on overhead rails, both manually operated and motorised trolleys can be provided with nickel-plating features on the gearbox/motor and body. For applications, such as commercial kitchens, the JDN Profi hoists offer a number of useful standard features including, high corrosion and humidity resistance, ease-of-cleaning and suitability for lube-free operation. JDN also has a number of stainless steel options including the chain, load hook and sleeve and top hook. JDN’s nickel-plated big bag handling air hoist is part of a range of products designed for applications that need to process powdered, granulated or other free-flowing materials which need regular, high volume top-ups in order to maintain the high levels of production. These hoists are suitable for handling food products such as salt, sugar, flour and starch, as well as chemical and pharmaceutical products. All these air operated JDN products provide explosion protection features for safe operation when being used in potentially explosive work environments. Big bag handling air hoists are available at carrying capacities of 1100 and 2200kg (with 6 bar air pressure). They can be supplied in two configurations of single or twin lift/load hooks. The single hook unit is designed for operation with a standard cruciform lifting beam. The large distance between the hook and the chain box advantageously eliminates potential collisions between the load and the chain box. Twin load hook models operate with more complex multipoint crossbeam designs, or for standard lifting beams featuring twin suspension points. In addition, they can be operated with synchronised lifting operation. J D Neuhaus has a history that can be traced back to 1745, and is now in its seventh generation of family ownership. Visitors to the Hebezeug-Museum (Hoist Museum) in Witten, are able to see for themselves the remarkable history of this progressive company. With over 200 employees across the group, the company manufactures pneumatically and hydraulically-

operated hoists and crane systems up to 115 tonne capacity from its state-of-the-art facility in Witten, Germany. This globally unique specialisation means that J D Neuhaus has set the quality standard for the market; a move that has seen the company become the established global leader in its technology field with customers in more than 90 countries worldwide. Over 80% of production from the Witten plant is exported, which is why the company has long-established subsidiary companies in France, Great Britain, Singapore and the USA, all of which have helped create a tight-knit global network in collaboration with international partners. Resilience and reliability are the key product differentiators setting JDN apart from their competitors, thanks largely to the explosive protection rating which makes their hoists ideal for use even in the most challenging of operating environments. Extreme applications include oil and gas exploration in arctic temperatures as low as -45°C, along with underwater tasks such as ship hull repairs, and plenty of others in demanding sectors like mining, the chemical industry, heavy plant construction and many areas of logistics. J D Neuhaus’ wide portfolio of services goes beyond manufacturing and also includes equipment assembly, inspection, maintenance and general overhaul, along with customer training courses and other consultative services. CONTAINED POWDER TRANSFER SYSTEM FOR REACTOR CHARGING When creating a new manufacturing facility, Hosokawa Micron’s customer sought their advice on the best system options for charging a reactor vessel with bulk powders whilst ensuring that operators and surrounding areas are not exposed to the powder.

T

he reactor vessel is installed in a room along with several other vessels with limited space for local bulk powder charging. After some discussion it was agreed the best solution was to install a powder handling isolator in a dedicated charging room and convey the powder to the reactor using an integrated vacuum transfer system. Drums are loaded onto a pneumatic drum tipper which rotates and docks the drum into the rear of the isolator where it is sealed using an inflatable seal. The drum outer liner is pulled into the isolator and sealed onto a spigot on the rear wall with a second inflatable seal. The inner bag, containing the powder is then pulled from the drum into the isolator transfer chamber before being moved through the transfer door into the charging chamber. Engineers at Hosokawa Micron designed the isolator so it is possible to pre-load 6 x 20kg bags of powder before the powder transfer operation is started. This ensures that the transfer of the whole 10 bag batch takes place within 50 minutes. This is the time limit required to achieve the correct process conditions inside the reactor. The vacuum transfer unit is mounted directly onto the reactor vessel inlet and is connected to a vacuum pump installed in the nearby technical area. The vacuum transfer unit inlet is piped to the outlet of the isolator

36

charge hopper. At the bottom of the charge hopper a bridge breaker is installed which helps to keep the powder in the hopper moving towards the outlet pipe. During normal operation, the isolator internal pressure is maintained at around -100 Pa using a variable speed centrifugal fan and pressure transmitter but the isolator gas inlet supply also passes through a vacuum breaker valve which ensures that the correct internal isolator pressure is still maintained when the vacuum pump is running. A dense phase powder transfer takes place, powder is sucked into the vacuum transfer unit until it reaches a pre-set level, at this point the inlet valve is closed and the bottom outlet valve is opened to allow the powder to discharge, under gravity, into the reactor. The discharge is also aided by a pulse of high pressure nitrogen through the VTU filters. The discharge valves then close and the cycle is repeated until all of the powder has been transferred. The isolator and transfer system is nitrogen inerted and designed to comply with ATEX regulations. The system is operated via a touch screen HMI and incorporates interlocks to ensure operator safety. VERSATILE NEW VERTICAL MILLING TECHNOLOGY FROM IIT The UK-based International Innovative Milling Technologies Ltd (IIT) has developed new low energy milling technology for a wide range of powder processing applications.

T

he innovative new M350 milling system extends the company’s “m-series” range of vertical roller mills and is a direct outcome of the company’s involvement in the Project Chariot powder manufacturing programme. The special three year collaborative project, headed by Procter and Gamble’s Technical Centre as part of the UK government’s Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI), was involved with the development of new technologies for advanced powder handling and processing applications. IIT’s new M350 mill is specifically designed to accommodate an output capacity range of up to 4.5t/hr for single pass applications and 500Kg/hr for finer products requiring classification. In this way the mill provides a versatile and flexible solution for the effective size reduction needs of a wide range of bulk materials across the complete scale of hardness up to 9.5 Mohs. As such the M350 is compatible with the processing needs of a wide range of minerals and other industrial products including glass, sodium bicarbonate, iron slag, sodium sulphate, limestone‚ zircon sand, silica sand, pet-coke, fly ash, and different types of blast furnace slag. The design of the ATEX compliant mill is based on a patented centrifugal grinding mechanism, utilising a special pivoting roller assembly and a static grinding ring to provide a highly energy efficient size reduction capability. The modular assembly of the M350 is also designed for efficient strip-down, cleaning and maintenance and includes a variety of construction material options to suit specific markets and applications. The design also minimises induced airflow through the mill. This feature reduces the ancillary equipment needs associated with similar mills and makes the complete installation significantly smaller and hence better value. These features, together with a non-captive bed, a profiled spreader plate and other design innovations, means that the size of the milled product remains consistent. In addition, accurate control of particle size distribution changes can be achieved by smooth operating adjustments to the rotational

speed of the mill – providing true ‘one pass’ milling if required. For speed of installation the low mass mill and its associated control system package are mounted on sub frame assemblies which can be easily transported between different process locations for maximum feedstock and operational versatility. As a result, the ergonomically designed mill can be utilised for a range of powder processing applications, including process validation, batch processing, research and development, material preparation and pre-processing routines. The new M350 mill extends the existing “m-series” range of milling systems developed and patented by IIT. For fully integrated powder milling processing solutions, IIT also offers complementary “c-series” classifiers and “s-series” cyclones. Full details at www.iituk.com Bulk Solids Today

NEXT GENERATION MAGNETIC SEPARATORS FOR POWDERS

T

he Goudsmit Magnetics Group of Waalre (NL) will introduce a new generation of magnetic separators at the Solids trade show in Antwerp (stand H4240). These are used to remove metal particles (<30 µm) from powders in the food, chemical, ceramic and other industries. The Easy Clean flow magnet stands out from the competition due to its user friendly cleaning, improved flow and the high Gauss values of the bars. In contrast to previous designs, in which such magnets were fitted with two layers of thin (Ø25 mm) bars, the new design contains a single row of Ø50 mm thick bars. New measurement techniques, including simulations of magnetic fields and tests in the company’s own test centre, have shown that this results in a higher separation yield. This is because the thicker bars remain in contact with the magnetic particles longer. An additional benefit is the reduced height of the magnet as a whole, which means it requires less installation height. Moreover, a single row of bars results in improved product flow; which is particularly beneficial when it comes to poorly flowing powders. The pneumatic magnetic bars simplify the cleaning process. The magnetic bars are slid out along a guide and, once outside the housing, the magnets are exposed by blowing them out of the bars. A plate then retains the captured metal particles, after which they fall into a collection tray.

With its enormous magnetic holding power of 13,000 Gauss at the rods, the Easy Clean flow magnet is also perfectly suited for the separation of small (>2 mm) stainless steel particles. The tests and measurements mentioned above also showed that magnetic holding power alone is not enough to separate stainless steel particles. It is also of critical importance that these particles come into contact with the bars as they flow past. To accomplish this, the company can fit deflectors in the magnet, providing good control over the direction of product flows containing weak magnetic (stainless steel) particles. This ensures that the product always contacts the bars. Watch a video here: https://youtu.be/ZgE6OYeTl5o www.goudsmitmagnets.com Bulk Solids Today

SAFEGUARDING POWDER QUALITY, CONTROLLING DUST, PROTECTING OPERATORS, SPEEDING UP PROCESS TIMES

W

hen processing powders into a production line, consideration of the quality of the input material is of utmost importance and diligent handling is a prime factor. The protection of the operator from airborne dust and minimising the bulk load lifting are health and safety necessities that are often overlooked. Farleygreene offer solutions to this issue within one simple station. Utilising the Slimline vibratory check sieve units they have 2 options available, selection of which can depend upon throughput, powder type and what the next process the powder is being transferred to, they can advise the correct type as required. The Sievmaster 553-STS machine is essentially an open top sieve unit but with the added benefit of a sack rest table and a cover which can be connected to a new or existing dust extraction system. This unit gives a basic level of protection and assistance to the operator. The dust cover can also be isolated via the swivel shut front access door when not in use. It is usually installed where a batch type process is used. The Easilift range is supplied in 2 variants using either a 600mm or 1000mm vibratory sieve unit. Each type has a power lift dusthood so the operator can gain access to the sieve components without any heavy lifting. All seal are self-docking and require awkward connections. The dusthood provides for

a sack rest table and for connection to a dust extraction system. The ‘Easilift’ and ‘553-STS’ can be used in conjunction with any type of conveyor, either mechanical or pneumatic and the frames are adaptable to fit into almost any situation. Test units are available for use either at your site or in our test facility. LONG-LIFE LIQUIFLO PUMPS LAST THE DISTANCE

T

ransferring extremely aggressive chemicals presents tough challenges for pumps, where despite the risks, a safe, reliable and accurate pumping performance is essential. A good example of where such a pumping performance has been achieved is with LIQUIFLO magnetically coupled gear pumps supplied by Michael Smith Engineers. The application is at a leading UK manufacturer of industrial chemicals including surfactants and personal care products. The pumps were installed in 1996 and are still in service today, more than 20 years later. The requirement was for 3 pumps to batch transfer a range of acidic and chloride based chemicals on a daily basis, operating up to 5 days a week. The nature of the application means that transfer rates are variable but in the region of 700Kg/Hr at around 3.5 bars differential pressure. Due to the extremely aggressive nature of the chemicals being handled, the pumps selected were manufactured in Hastelloy C276. Also, because of the low viscosity of the product a Hastelloy drive gear with Ryton idler was specified to eliminate galling of the gears through lack of lubrication. The shafts were also Hastelloy running in Teflon bushings. The proven performance over such a long period of time on this type of demanding pumping application is testimony to the durability of Liquiflo pumps. As external gear pumps they are designed for delivering smooth and accurate pulseless flows, while a magnet drive ensures zero leakages and eliminates the

need (and associated maintenance costs) related to replacing dynamic seals. The Hastelloy C construction provides optimum corrosion resistance, harder wearing and extended pump life while a compact, closecoupled design results in a reduced footprint freeing up workspace. The H Series pumps feature larger diameter shafts and bigger bearings than other pumps with similar capacities and this allows them to handle higher pressures and operate for longer between servicing. These high pressure gear pumps are available in packed, mechanically sealed and leak-free magnet drive versions. The range consists of 12 models and covers flows up to 180 lit/min and differential pressures up to 15.5 bar. PROTECTION PLUS WITH INNOVATIVE CORROSION PROTECTION Capacitive RF probe with full coating protection as a safe and reliable measurement solution in flue gas cleaning

P

erformance failures of level sensors cause costs to rise – not only due to the interruption of process but also when the replacement and commissioning of the devices become time-consuming. In power plants, the demands made on the fill level sensors can be very high due to the fact that the sensors come into contact with aggressive media such as sulphur oxides, heavy metals or even acids. Where limit switches are used for dust detection in flue gas cleaning, they need to be robust enough in order to deliver reliable and consistent performance. Often maintenance costs or replacement of these sensors can be very high due to their quality not being adequate to meet the demands and so they achieve only a short operating life. This is particularly evident in measurement tasks in flue gas cleaning within waste incineration plants. FLUE GAS CLEANING IN WASTE INCINERATION PLANTS: A waste incineration plant in Germany experienced severe corrosion of its level detectors within the flue gas cleaning processes. Smoke gases contain different pollutants, such as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrochloric acid, heavy metals, dioxins and fly ash or soot. They are usually dusty particles with varying grain sizes. Due to the aggressive media that is generated in the process containers, the sensors experienced considerable deterioration. In particular, the booms, or shafts, which are directly exposed to the filter dusts were corroded so badly that they malfunctioned after just 1-2 years post installation. The main tasks during flue gas cleaning are denitrification, dust extraction and desulphurisation. Depending on the individual system, these tasks are carried out in several stages. Within a waste incineration plant, smoke gases are generated during combustion, which pass through the electrostatic precipitator as the first cleaning stage. Here separation/deposition of heavy metals, which are bonded to the fine and ultra fine dust, takes place. Then, there follow two washing stages, the leaching out of chlorine compounds, corundum compounds and sulphuric acid. Here, the highly aggressive hydrochloric acid is extracted as a waste product. The process continues with the catalytic purification process for the deposition of nitric oxides, dioxins and furans and ends in the flow-current absorber. The final purification stage of the flue gas removes the remaining amount of heavy metals and pollutants. It is only after the flue gases have passed through the multi-stage flue gas cleaning, that the purified exhaust air is able to leave the chimney. The performance range of such plants can vary from a few thousand to several hundred thousand cubic metres of flue gas per hour. For the separation of the filter dust in the flue gas cleaning, a reliable signal is required in order to ensure plant safety. In the case of insufficient protection, the probes usually fail after a short life cycle. Even sensors with stainless steel brackets experience 42

Bulk Solids Today

corrosion or are damaged in this aggressive process environment. Chemicals such as sulphur, hydrochloric acid and chlorine are too aggressive for the stainless steel in these applications. Failure of the measurement sensor system results in costly process interruptions and subsequent replacement of the devices. LONGER SERVICE LIFE DUE TO INCREASED CORROSION RESISTANCE UWT has further developed the RFnivo® 3100 capacitive level limit switch for this type of measurement task in the dust extraction of flue gases so that it meets and withstands the demanding conditions. All process-contacting parts of the sensor have been designed to be completely corrosion-resistant. Firstly, the RF boom is coated with PFA Teflon® and, secondly, a section of the process connection thread has been completely made of PTFE so that all parts in contact with the process are fully corrosion-protected. PROBE BOOM WITH PFA FULL COATING The shaft of the RFnivo® limit switch is fully coated with PFA Teflon®. It is resistant to almost all chemicals and can withstand temperatures of up to 240°C. In contrast to a spray coating, the type of coating of the RF probe is much more resilient, up to 1.5mm thick, and thus has more protection in abrasive applications. The RFnivo® 3100 with its PFA fully coated probe boom is ideally suited for level measurement in flue gas cleaning processes. It functions as a full detector and can be installed vertically, horizontally or obliquely. It measures the capacitance between the probe and the vessel wall. If the boom is covered with product, the capacity changes. The switching point is output as an electronic signal. For a waste incineration plant, the RFnivo® was installed as a backlog warning device in the electrostatic precipitator. All RF device types have an active coat compensation, which makes the probe insensitive to material deposits on the boom. This further increases the functional safety of the capacitive limit switch. This ActiveShield technology is not affected by the PFA coating, nor by any caking that is produced during fine dust measurement. In addition, the PFA coating counteracts adhesion. So, UWT has developed full protection against corrosion, adhesion and abrasion and the measurement results are not adversely affected by the coating. At the same time, the sensor is sensitive enough to detect the fine dust in the processes of flue gas cleaning. Accurate detection of materials with a DK value> 1.5 is achieved. PROCESS CONNECTION THREAD MADE OF PTFE In order to ensure full and comprehensive protection of the process-contacting probe extension the process connection thread, which is connected to the boom, is made completely from PTFE Teflon®.

CHEMICALS

Thus, all parts in contact with the process have sufficient protection. This allows for the coated RF probe to also be used as a full detector in the intermediate containers for the storage of filter dust and fly ash. In this situation, the highly dosed hydrochloric acid condensate is also present, which has until now adversely affected previous measurement technique in that the booms have been so corroded that they have partly fallen off. With the PFA full coating and the PTFE connection thread such chemicals are no longer a threat. The RFnivo速 3100 with fully coated probe boom can be made with a boom length from 200mm up to 1500mm and can therefore be used in a variety of installations. In plastics, PTFE is the material that offers most resistance to most basic chemicals. Apart from liquid sodium and fluorine compounds, PTFE is resistant to almost all media even at higher temperatures. Corrosion on the thread itself is thus reduced by a special design using Teflon速. Due to the extremely low surface tension of PTFE, no dust-like materials from the flue gases stick to or cake the process connection thread. In addition, the capacitive RF limit switch already offers a particularly high load capacity in the standard version. If overpressure is present in the process tank, this can be up to 25 bar for and still the RF probe will operate. The capacitive RFnivo速 has been specially designed for the level detection of bulk solids. Due to the customised design, it delivers excellent functionality in the level detection of dusty particles with varying grain size.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES FOR FLUE GAS DUST EXTRACTION Commissioning is achievable in minutes without the operator having to go deep into the physical connections of a capacitive measuring principle. The design of the RFnivo速 electronics make commissioning straightforward and user-friendly. After the probe has been installed and the supply voltage has been connected, it automatically calibrates itself and detects by means of self-monitoring, which runs in the background, if there is a malfunction of the probe. The display on the electronics indicates whether the calibration was successful and whether the probe has the appropriate switching state for the application. In addition, the current measured capacity (in pF picofarad) is displayed. This allows the operator to calculate the necessary sensitivity. The capacitive fully-coated RF sensor is a new safe solution for all systems where applications with a particularly aggressive process environment exist. This is, for example, wherever flue gas cleaning takes place. In addition to wasteto-energy plants, this situation applies to biomass plants, peat and coal power plants. Improved corrosion protection of measurement sensors in certain processes for flue gas cleaning is an important topic for sludge combustion in chemical plants as well as for sawmills with integrated incineration plants for the production of energy. www.uwtuk.com

RECYCLING & WASTE MANAGEMENT

BRITANIACREST RECYCLING GOES BLUE AGAIN!

B

ritaniacrest Recycling Ltd, a family business formed in 1993 by Ray Foss Snr and with three sites over Surrey and West Sussex, is now in the hands of the second generation – brothers Ray Jnr, Chris and Richard. Since inception, the company has always invested in the most modern, productive and reliable plant and equipment as the business expanded and diversified. The latest addition to the Britaniacrest plant holding is a Powerscreen® Premiertrak R400 mobile crushing plant, sourced from appointed distributors Blue London. The Foss family and Blue London Director Eugene Donnelly have known each other for over 30 years and the very first machine Britaniacrest acquired in the year the company started was a Powerscreen screening plant Ray Foss Snr purchased from Eugene Donnelly….so the 23-year allegiance continues with this latest fleet addition. The Premiertrak R400 is one of a whole range of high performance, versatile primary jaw crushing plants designed for recycling, quarrying or mining applications. The R400 features hydraulic release and a patented hydraulic crusher overload system which is ideal for Britaniacrest’s recycling applications where un-crushable materials, such as tramp metals, can enter 44

the in-feed; the machine’s hydraulic crusher setting adjustment also provides total control of end-product size. The Premiertrak R400 has an output potential of up to 400 tonnes per hour with excellent reduction capability, is extremely user-friendly and is economical to operate due to a highly efficient direct drive system. The R400 has numerous design and build benefits for both ease of maintenance and operational efficiency, plus tracked mobility on site and a quick set-up time – typically under 30 minutes. Britaniacrest’s new crusher is processing around 3,500 tonnes a week, predominantly hardcore, concrete and demolition debris that form part of the waste stream which enters the company’s waste transfer stations. The crushing process produces a variety of sized and specified end-products, largely type 1 aggregate and 6f2. One of the attractions of the R400, says Britaniacrest, is its transportability, which allows the company to make use of the crusher on their site of choice, plus a high output and the considerable environmental benefit of comparatively quiet operation. Ray Foss Jnr enlarged on his company’s purchasing decision, commenting “We’ve bought quite a lot of machines from Blue London over the years – both Powerscreen crushers and screeners as well as Doppstadt

shredders. Apart from the proven excellence of these marketleading brands, we also have a great working partnership with Blue…we know we can rely on them right from the start of the purchasing process through to their impressive after sales product support. Blue’s sales manager Ronan Herity is our first line of contact there and we’ve built up a good relationship. We’ve bought kit from Blue since we started which says it all!” Britaniacrest closely engaged with the then relatively new concepts of recycling at the time of its formation and has grown from strength to strength to become one of the South of England’s leading independent waste management companies. Passionate about recycling and environmental considerations, Britaniacrest Recycling has continually invested in plant, facilities and skilled personnel and now runs two modern waste transfer stations near Gatwick and Horsham capable of processing and recycling a combined yearly total of around 480,000 tonnes of waste and also exporting some 52,000 tonnes of RDF to Germany annually. Additionally, Britaniacrest owns and operates a sand quarry in Storrington, West Sussex producing a range of sand products for the building and construction industry. In addition to their recycling and quarrying interests, Britaniacrest also runs a large hire fleet of skips, RoRo, tipper and muckaway vehicles and grab lorries; there is also a comprehensive fleet of road sweeper vehicles and low-loaders for hire, with bulk haulage and waste collection services also forming an important part of the company’s broad-based activities. As part of their environmental involvement, Britaniacrest also provides expertise in quarry and land restoration, reinstating land to a variety of uses including agriculture, wildlife habitats and social amenities. Currently going through the necessary planning application procedure is the company’s innovative scheme to develop a further site to include a state-of-the-art recycling and renewable energy plant at the former Wealden Brickworks near Horsham. The proposed new facility will concentrate on the safe and environmentally sensitive processing and separation of commercial waste to produce a range of recyclables, with any residual material used to produce energy, using wellestablished and proven thermal treatment technology. The new plant will provide a sustainable power generating alternative to primary materials and fossil fuels and annually will export enough electricity to the grid to power over 44,000 homes. www.blue-group.com www.britaniacrestrecycling.co.uk

DEALS DELIVERED AT TANK STORAGE GERMANY 2016 Tank Storage Germany 2016, the leading event for the German tank storage industry, closed its doors to its most successful show yet with high quality buyers conducting business on the show floor with an array of leading suppliers from Germany and beyond.

T

he conference and exhibition, which took place at The Hamburg Messe on 16 & 17 November, reported a record number of senior level tank storage professionals in attendance. These included terminal

managers, CEOs, managing directors, senior engineers and investors from BP GmbH, Shell Deutschland, Vopak, Varo Energy, TanQuid, Oiltanking, Inter Terminals, Hamburg Port Authority, TankPort B.V. and many more oil majors and terminals from across the region, resulting in more deals being done on the show floor than ever before. Exhibitor Joachim Toffolo, Market Sales Manager at Auma Riester GmbH, commented: “It’s quality that really makes the difference and we had a lot of senior level contacts to our stand.” Claus Polens, Head of OpenTAS Consulting at Implico Group, agreed: “Tank Storage Germany 2016 was again a very successful get-together of the tank terminal industry in Germany and beyond. For us at Implico this event is another good opportunity to meet face to face with our customers and partner companies here in our hometown of Hamburg. It is always a great chance to get new inspiring ideas for our terminal automation software.” Many of the suppliers exhibiting at the show used the event to launch new products to the German bulk liquid storage sector. This undoubtedly played an important part in attracting the many senior decision-makers and buyers to the show. Alec Keeler, Managing Director at Loadtec commented, “We brought solutions that the German market needs and those fortunate to attend recognized that and showed their appreciation.” Visitor to the show, Kevin Alex, Procurement Manager at Shell Deutschland Oil GMBH commented, “I regularly visit Tank Storage Germany, I think it’s a great fit for the oil & gas industry with a wide range of known suppliers and a great opportunity to meet new ones.” Harald Junghans, Project Manager at Stadler Schaaf, agreed, “Tank Storage Germany is very industry focused. We attended the show to find new products and contacts and found we were able to have much better discussions face to face than over the phone.” In addition to an exhibition floor full of innovation, the Tank Storage Germany conference provided visitors with hours of educational and highly-practical content, from a series of world class names, which included JP Morgan, Deloitte, Vopak Terminal Hamburg, TanQuid and McKinsey & Company. These expert sessions covered everything from the latest global and local issues through to industry developments, and trends affecting the German bulk liquid storage sector. 48

With more deals happening live Tank Storage Germany 2017 on the show floor than ever 29 & 30 November 2017 before, it is no wonder that Hamburg Messe, Hamburg everyone is happy. The level of quality visitor we attracted created a fantastic buzz around the show, which we are obviously thrilled about. “However, most importantly those visitors told us that they got a huge amount from our event too, which was reflected by a 97% satisfaction rate. They also commented that more exhibitors than ever before appeared to be using the show to launch new products, underscoring how important it has become. In essence, Tank Storage Germany worked for the whole tank storage industry in the region and we’re absolutely committed to ensuring that the 2017 event builds on this success.” The next edition of Tank Storage Germany takes place on 29 & 30 November 2017 at the Hamburg Messe, to find out more please visit www.tankstoragegermany.com

SEA-INVEST PLACES ORDER FOR A SAMSON ECO HOPPER

S

EA-Invest, one of the world’s largest terminal operators with expertise spanning a multitude of port related activities in 25 ports over 2 continents, have placed an order for an Eco Hopper from SAMSON Materials Handling Ltd., UK, destined for operation in the Ivory Coast. This Eco Hopper is designed to receive dry bulk materials such as cement clinker, limestone, gypsum and slag from a mobile harbour crane. The Eco Hopper will discharge onto a high-level quayside conveyor at a rate of 1,200 tph or via a dedicated outlet direct to trucks at 700 tph. SAMSON Eco Hoppers provide an environmentally respectful import solution for dry bulk materials. With a variety of dust reduction and containment measures operators will reduce material wastage and limit fugitive dust. Robustly designed to withstand cross winds and grab impact damage, the Eco Hopper is reliable in busy ports and terminals. SEA-Invest chose the SAMSON Eco Hopper for its flexibility. In addition to being able to handle a variety of different materials, the equipment can be configured at a later stage to suit evolving port operations. Port operators need to make sure that logistics costs are compatible with the market price of the materials being transported and that their equipment can respond to changes in market conditions. Mr Sébastien Ghesquiere, Director of SEA-Tech, the SEA-Invest Engineering subsidiary, confirms that “in a competitive market we need to ensure our service offering is reliable and value

for money. Environmental responsibility is something that we take seriously at SEA-Invest. We endeavour to provide efficient, cost effective and environmentally appropriate service and we look forward to developing our port facilities with SAMSON”. SAMSON Materials Handling has 50 years of experience in the design and manufacture of bulk materials handling equipment employed across a variety of different and diverse industries worldwide.
