PORT OF TYNE INCREASES CONTAINER HANDLING TO HELP KEEP BRITAIN MOVING Now, in the final days of the transition period before Brexit and after 10 months of challenging supply chain conditions due to Coronavirus, Port of Tyne has a clear message to shipping providers, cargo owners and freight forwarders. “We’re fully open, there’s no congestion, goods are moving freely in and out of the port and we are doing everything we can to help ports in the south east of the UK. Port of Tyne has extra capacity to further increase our cargo handling volumes and we’re here to keep Britain moving,” says Richard Newton, Commercial Director for Logistics at Port of Tyne. The Port of Tyne is one of the UK’s leading deep-sea ports, takes almost 90% of the world’s largest ships and has been working tirelessly to support container movements and minimise the current delays faced by end users in the region. Due to increased volumes of goods arriving for

the Christmas festive period and the legacy supply chain impact of Covid-19, in recent weeks the Port of Tyne has seen a significant increase in vessel calls and associated container volumes. To alleviate the supply chain disruption seen at ports elsewhere in the UK, the Port of Tyne has been supporting shipping lines and feeder operators by allocating additional berths to assist in the evacuation of empty containers to a variety of north European ports for European consumption. This ensures containers are used for loaded export shipments and reduces the number of empty containers shipped back to Asia. Richard Newton adds: “We are here to help everyone in the supply chain including shipping lines, freight forwarders, end users and hauliers, and we want to demonstrate that there has never been a better time to re-configure supply chains and shipping routes into the UK.
We’ll handle your containers so that the environmental, cost and efficiency benefits from shipping goods closer to the point of consumption are realised.” Routing containers into northern ports like the Port of Tyne and then distributing goods down the country is quicker, cheaper, greener and there’s less congestion for hauliers travelling from north to south. “We have excellent road and rail transport links, many years of experience in the container and roll on roll off market and we’re here to help keep Britain moving”, says Richard. Key benefits of shipping into the Port of Tyne As one of only two deep sea ports in the north east, Port of Tyne offers a number of key advantages for container shippers: - Regular and scheduled feeder connections to the global gateways of Felixstowe and Rotterdam; - Operational capability to handle large container feeder vessels of up to 230m and 13 container rows across; - Flexible labour agreements with the ability to accommodate short notice changes in vessel scheduling; - Integrated logistics offering with an in-house transport fleet to perform the ‘final mile’ delivery; - Excellent relationships with the key stakeholders in containers shipping supply chains; - Environmental, cost and operational efficiency benefits from shipping goods closer to the point of consumption. - Cost efficient alternative route to market with an established daily coastal feeder service to save road miles.

NARROW AISLE’S NEW RIDE-ON ORDER PICKER IS A SAFE CHOICE FOR E-COMMERCE FULFILMENT CENTRES The latest addition to the extensive range of space-saving intralogistics solutions offered by Narrow Aisle Ltd is the Easi-Pick – a compact ride-on vertical order picker designed specifically for use within e-commerce facilities. A cost-effective alternative to the type of manuallymanoeuvered ladder-type mobile access platforms that are often used in fulfilment centre environments to help operations personnel reach elevated pick faces within racking aisles, the Easi-Pick delivers a range of benefits, including hugely improved productivity and increased worker safety. The electric-powered EasiPick features a heavy-duty and exceptionally stable mast in combination with a spacious and ergonomically designed working platform to ensure that warehouse staff are secure and comfortable as they undertake a range of picking duties at height within the warehouse or fulfilment centre aisleways. The Easi-Pick allows picking tasks to be carried out at heights of up to 6.5 metres, while its compact chassis design enables the unit to turn in racking aisles measuring just 1.6 metres wide. Furthermore, the Easi-Pick’s space saving dimensions mean it can
work safely alongside other materials handling equipment, such as lift trucks, within the same storage aisle. The Easi-Pick’s advanced functionality allows it to be controlled by the operator in the raised position, thereby saving valuable minutes when travelling between picking locations throughout the store and maximising throughput and picking speeds. A high efficiency AC digital drive system can be programmed via the EasiPick’s on-board LCD dash to ensure travel and lift/ lower speed restrictions are not exceeded, while power comes from a traction battery that supports charging from a standard single phase 230V outlet. MIDLAND PALLET TRUCKS OFFERS ADVICE TO WAREHOUSE MANAGERS ON REDUCING THE RISK OF COVID-19 ON THE RUN-UP TO CHRISTMAS As the warehousing industry enters into the busiest time of the year with record numbers of shoppers heading online to purchase Christmas gifts, a report from Amnesty International has drawn attention to the risks for warehouse workers tasked with fulfilling the growing demands of online shoppers. With Covid-19 still a real and present danger for employees returning to work in a variety of industries, Amnesty International carried out surveillance of several distribution centres in France, Poland and the UK. It noted that social distancing measures could not be maintained due to aggressive targets, potentially making warehouses hotspots for infection. The report serves to highlight the increasing pressure that staff and distribution centre managers find themselves under during heightened periods of demand. Midland Pallet Trucks, a provider of high-quality materials handling equipment including pallet trucks, manual stacker trucks and lift tables, is offering helpful advice and support to warehouse and distribution centre
workers as the UK gets ready to celebrate the Christmas season. Simple measures such as making adequate stocks of lift tables and pallet trucks available can stop employees converging around essential pieces of equipment and increasing the likelihood of virus transmission. Enhanced equipment ‘sanitisation stations’ to allow each piece of equipment to be wiped down with antibacterial fluid after use before being returned to its original position can also cut transmission risk, with more stations advisable in peak periods. Midland Pallet Truck managing director Phil Chesworth said “Although these two new processes may take a little more time, having more equipment available to workers can cut down on disruptions to productivity and ensure that all workers can stay safe at work. “Without staff, warehouses simply cannot operate or meet their targets, so a little extra cleaning and equipment can go a long way to help repress the virus.” To find out more about Midland Pallet Trucks, visit https://www.midlandpallettrucks.com/

MASSIVE INCREASE IN TESTING CAPACITY AND PRIDE OF WORKMANSHIP – THE NEW NOKIAN HEAVY TYRES R&D CENTER IS UP AND RUNNING Making professional tire use safer and more efficient sets high demands on product development. To bring new ideas to the market faster, testing has an important role. Nokian Tyres has invested heavily on a new, state-of-the-art test center for Nokian Heavy Tyres, upgrading the testing capabilities to a whole new level with added automation and capacity. Despite the challenges caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, the magic is already happening in the new building – enabling us to introduce more and better new heavy tires. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, many phases of the construction process have been managed remotely. “This kind of flexible problem-solving has been typical for the whole construction project, and it has kept us on schedule. Hats off for the whole team that made it possible!”, says Development Manager Matti Kaunisto from Nokian Heavy Tyres. No substitute for testing In the tire product development process, testing is essential as it proves (or disproves) the design calculations and gives important data back to designers. That’s why the new, nearly 4000 m2 facility is a vast improvement both in terms of testing quantity and quality. “For example, the drum testing capacity grew significantly” says R&D Director Kalle Kaivonen from Nokian Heavy Tyres. “The product development and OEM collaboration are much more efficient. Thanks to the added capacity, the earlier bottlenecks in testing have been eliminated. And there is plenty of room for future investments still!” Another important factor is testing quality. “The new machinery enables us to gather more data and analyze it better, as the integration with the product development is more solid than before”, Kaivonen says. Testing by order The purpose of the facility is to provide answers. The whole testing process from installation to measurements and 3D scanning, from pressure testing to sectioncutting is optimized to provide quality data efficiently for different information needs. “Different kinds of tests and analysis can be ordered by a product development team, customer service or by a machine manufacturer, for example”, says Kaivonen. “We can provide them with extremely broad range of different analysis and in-depth information.” Ergonomics and pride In work ergonomics, the transformation from old premises to purpose-built facility is massive. In the design of the new test center, special attention was paid to the safe and ergonomic handling of the tires and wheels. “Everything is more clearly laid out now and on a same level”, Matti Kaunisto says. “This makes the work safer and more comfortable – and has clearly boosted the
spirits of the whole team.” Speaking of work safety, the process where the tire segments are scanned with a high-resolution scanner and transferred digitally fits well together with today’s social distancing requirements. “The tire cross section data moves between the testing and R&D teams digitally, without the need of any physical contact!”, Matti Kaunisto grins. Not just new tires Besides product development, the tire testing facilities are needed for manufacturing quality control – but also for customer service. “In a rare occasion, there can be a tire failure, abnormal noise or some such problem in the field that needs to be thoroughly figured out”, says Mikko Pukkila from Nokian Heavy Tyres’ technical customer service. “In these cases, tires can be inspected and analyzed in test center. The feedback from the field gives us important understanding of the tire life cycle.” A building full of Hakkapeliitta spirit Sometimes, the Nokian Tyres way of doing things is referred to as “The Hakkapeliitta spirit”. It sums up the spirit of innovation and the resourcefulness a specialized manufacturer has, and the new building depicts it well – from its smart engineering down to the self-cleaning, energy-conserving windows. What’s more, the center also lives up to company values of working safety, sustainability and peace of mind. “There’s hardly any waste that isn’t recycled”, says R&D Director Kalle Kaivonen. “Also the heat generated by the test equipment is gathered for heating the facility, and more heat is generated by the local biofuel plant.” The biggest investment in the history of Nokian Heavy Tyres In 2018, Nokian Heavy Tyres announced a massive undertaking: to increase the production of commercial tires up to 50 percent and more than double the number of new products by investing heavily on production and product development. The total investment will be approximately EUR 70 million. Bulk Solids Today

JUST-IN-TIME DELIVERY SPECIALISTS, ALCALINE, LOOK FOR MAXIMUM VEHICLE UPTIME WITH NEW IVECO S-WAY Kent-based haulier, Alcaline takes delivery of two new low-ride IVECO S-WAY for time critical panEuropean missions after previous Stralis impresses with strong reliability and fuel consumption. For Kent-based just-in-time haulier, Alcaline, every delivery is time critical and every minute counts. Its fleet of 200 vehicles and two helicopters need to run like clockwork with minimal downtime. To that end, Alcaline are one of the first operators in the UK to take delivery of the new IVECO S-WAY. The trucks, supplied by Haynes Trucks in Maidstone have been wrapped in a distinctive, updated version of Alcaline’s livery, one black, the other silver. Otherwise identical, both are lowdeck AS440S51T/FP 4x2s running on all-round air suspension. Alcaline don’t often run to maximum weight capacity for their 4x2s, instead ‘cubing out’ their trailers through sheer volume. Running in Europe means they’re governed by a maximum 4-metre overall vehicle height and have therefore ordered low-ride tractors compatible with its fleet of ‘Mega’ trailers. These trailers have a lower, thinner floor allowing operators to maximise their loading height with a 3m load bay. As a result, the trucks sit closer than normal to the ground with a very low fifth wheel. Perfect for keeping pace and traversing the Alps with ease, Alcaline chose IVECO’s largest-capacity Euro VI D-compliant engine, the inline six-cylinder 12.9-litre CURSOR 13 diesel, producing 510-horsepower and a healthy 2,300-Nm of torque. IVECO utilises its unique and patented HI-SCR exhaust after-treatment system to eliminate wasted time waiting for particulate filter regeneration. Coupled to the engine is the 12-speed HI-TRONIX automated transmission, working together with IVECO HI-CRUISE, the GPS-based predictive drive system which utilises navigation data to expect forthcoming changes in topography to ensure the vehicle always runs at optimum efficiency. Most of Alcaline’s trucks are ordered in left-hand drive to make life easier for the drivers as they spend the majority of the time driving on the continent. These are mostly run ‘double-manned’, with Alcaline actually employing double-figure numbers of husband and wife driving teams. This helps save them critical hours on a normal run between its Turin depot in Northern Italy and the company’s Kent base, allowing them to make the entire journey in one shift. With a fresh driver awaiting in 12
Bulk Solids Today
Kent, it enables next-day deliveries from Turin to places in the midlands, like Birmingham. With that in mind, its trucks are often ordered to a highly functional level of specification, these two are no different. As its drivers can spend weeks away from home at a time, a key consideration when choosing new trucks is driver comfort. With the new AS Sleepercab, the IVECO S-WAY now stands proud as the market leader for internal space with a standing height of 2.15-metres. The 250-litres of internal storage is complemented by four capacious external lockers offering an additional 380-litres, two of which are also accessible from inside the cab. Externally, the trucks feature painted aerodynamic side-skirts and the Premium Style Pack, adding an external sun visor, cab-coloured plastics, aluminium air tanks and pneumatic horn. It also features the new integrated parking cooler, necessary for nights away in warmer climates. This is fitted in conjunction with automatic climate control air conditioning and situated under the front grille, no longer requiring roof-top mounting and thus improving exterior aerodynamics and overall fuel consumption. Internally, both have been specified with the T-shaped, single-piece lower bunk and Wide upper with fold-out ladder. This can be folded flat to the back wall, used with an integrated net as additional storage while on the move and lowered to create further living space. Additionally, the premium fridge and freezer combination offers 50 litres of chilled storage respectively with handy drinks bottle hatch and additional USB and 230v power outlets. Increasing driver appeal became a high priority for IVECO during the development phase and Alcaline’s Transport Manager Alex Borlase believes this has been achieved. “It’s a visual thing on the outside and a space thing for the inside, S-WAY certainly seems appealing
SPECIAL FEATURE
to the drivers... Before we took delivery, I’d been asked by a lot of drivers if they could have them,” he says, adding, “I could have put drivers in these S-WAYs ten times over already.” Elsewhere is HI-COMFORT heated and cooled drivers seating, dual diesel tanks offering a 1,010-litre total capacity, and Efficiency Plus Pack incorporating GPS Predictive drive, Eco Fleet and Top Fuel Pack. This, along with improvements in the body’s aerodynamics help IVECO S-WAY reduce fuel consumption by up to 4% over its predecessor, ensuring fewer stops on Alcaline’s time-sensitive deliveries. The capacitive 7” infotainment system incorporating a truck-focussed TomTom LIVE navigation system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, DAB radio & Bluetooth, allows drivers to monitor their own efficiency and connect their smartphones to enable remote control features through the IVECO MY EASY WAY app. The IVECO MY EASY WAY app allows drivers to take control of their truck, altering ambient lighting settings from the bunk, adjusting the parking cooler from a service station café or even locking/unlocking the doors and opening/closing the windows. Other features allow them to monitor the vehicles performance, their efficiency and predictive vehicle servicing requirements. The connectivity box can also allow transport managers back in the office to keep an eye on the running of their fleet and with a connection to IVECO’s central control room, possible problems can be averted ahead of time and with the help of over-the-air updates. Minimising downtime is key to Alcaline’s operations and played a major part in the decision to order the trucks. With important automotive parts in transit, any delays risk a halt in production, potentially costing customers tens of thousands of pounds per minute. “Haynes Trucks have been really good. Kevin
Young, who sold us a very good and reliable Stralis XP came by with an S-WAY demonstrator which had a great presence on the road and improved upon everything we liked in the previous truck”, comments Alex. “Their aftersales team are great too; I’ve only ever had to send the Stralis in for routine maintenance but their booking lead-times etc are always short and they can’t do enough for you.” Efficient service is paramount, with each vehicle expected to cover at least 200,000 kilometres per year, there’s little time for its wheels to not to be turning. “It’s fantastic to see the IVECO S-WAY already proving itself as the perfect truck for both driver and operator alike. We are especially proud of the reputation our trucks have already earned within such an exigent business as Alcaline’s,” comments IVECO UK’s Heavy Business-line Director, Gareth Lumsdaine. “IVECO S-WAY represents real value in an industry with tight deadlines and even tighter margins. Our connected features collaborate with strong R&M packages to keep TCO low while maximising productivity. It’s a fantastic-looking, comfortable and engaging truck that I think drivers will be proud to hold the key for.” The IVECO S-WAY is arriving on UK shores now in right-hand drive, with dealers remaining on-hand for enquiries by phone or email throughout the national lockdown. Euro VI/d HI-SCR 8.7, 11.1 and 12.9-litre CURSOR diesel engines are available, offering 330 to 570-horsepower. NP (Natural Power)-badged gasfuelled alternatives producing 270 to 460hp will follow. applications, further increasing output. The Z-kinematic lift arm delivers high breakout forces and lifting capacities, especially for heavy materials, and a large dump angle for efficiently unloading sticky materials. An optional high lift arm is available where higher dump heights and increased versatility are required. The DL-7 loaders also have smooth and responsive hydraulics and auxiliary hydraulic connections. All of the new DL-7 wheel loaders are equipped as standard with a 3rd spool valve with settable flow and detent function, providing a constant flow for hydraulically driven attachments. Operators can easily and comfortably control hydraulic attachments via the proportional switch on the joystick. Various bias and radial tyre options are also available from leading global manufacturers, to cover the widest possible range of conditions and applications. In addition, the new wheel loaders can be ordered with a choice of different counterweights - options include 300, 400 or 500 kg depending on the application. Excellent Operator Visibility The new cab offers a greatly improved field of vision for the operator, with blind spots around the cab minimized and a 14% larger glass window area compared to the previous DL-5 models. The DL-7 wheel loaders also offer the option of electrically adjustable rear view mirrors for added safety. Full LED working lights are installed on the cab (four on both the front and rear as standard, with the option of six each at the front and rear). For higher pedestrian safety, the LED lights on the rear bonnet have an automatic strobe function to indicate when the wheel loader is reversing. An air compressor with air blower is available as an option - fitted in the cab for easy access, this is a powerful tool that can be used to clean the cab whenever necessary. New Spacious Ergonomic Cab Design Inside the cab, the DL-7 wheel loaders offer significantly enhanced operating comfort, an enhanced
ON THE COVER steering system and advanced electronic controls. Using the new Doosan Smart Key system on the control panel in the cab, the operator can start the machine using a keyless device, helping to prevent machine theft. The Smart Key system provides remote door control, door lock and unlock, door release, searching and other functions. The control panel also includes two USB sockets. The new cab has a Grammer Actimo XXL seat with fully adjustable horizontal and vertical suspension settings, a pneumatic lumbar function and seat heating as standard. There is a 3-point safety belt with alarm icons on the new Doosan Smart Touch 8 inch touchscreen monitor and on the gauge panel, which features a new layout and anti-reflective glass. The new EMCV (Electric Main Control Valve) joystick fully integrated in the armrest is another standard feature in the cab, providing the operator with smoother and precise controllability of the lift arm and attachments on the wheel loaders. Features available via the EMCV system include Automatic Return-to-Dig, Bucket Tilt Kick-out and the Bucket crowd stop position and shock prevention for higher operator comfort. Designed to give the operator more precise control with a shorter lever stroke, resulting in less fatigue, the sensitivity of the ergonomic joystick control can be set and altered according to operator preferences using the new Doosan Smart Touch touchscreen monitor. User-friendly and easy to read in all conditions, the new touchscreen provides all the important settings and information the operator needs in one place. Included in the information at the operator’s fingertips on the touchscreen is the feed from the rearview camera, the weighing system, the HVAC controls (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), Radio & Bluetooth devices (music streaming, hands-free) and the operator help function. Overall, the redesigned interior offers a much larger, quieter and more comfortable operator environment, which improves safety and productivity and helps the operator work with high concentration. The operator also has increased leg room, an enlarged storage area and cool-box position and an improved air conditioning system (with optimized air circulation). Higher Performance The LIS (Load Isolation System) provides a smoother ride and higher comfort for the operator, as well as higher productivity due to improved stability when the wheel loader is moving. The lift arm is cushioned by a hydro-pneumatic accumulator linked to the lift hydraulic system, acting as a shock absorber. The benefits include reduced cycle times, higher performance and better fuel efficiency while carrying out load and carry applications. With automatic 5-speed powershift transmission, heavy duty HDL axles as standard and enhanced traction with Differential Hydraulic Lock (DHL), the DL-7 wheel loaders operate exceptionally, especially in highload environments. The differential hydraulic 100% lock can be engaged at full torque automatically without any action from the operator. Optional independent oil cooler circuits for the front and rear axle ensure low oil temperatures, provide oil filtration and extend the lifetime of axle components, especially for demanding applications, such as long
distance load and carry in high ambient temperature conditions. Improvements have been made throughout the powertrain, to provide operators with best-in-class driveability and faster driving, reaching the 40 km/h maximum speed quickly and safely. Full 3-year/5000 h Warranty as Standard The upgraded hydraulic system and major parts ensure greatly improved durability and maintainability. Providing increased peace of mind for the customer, the high reliability and quality of the new DL-7 wheel loaders are backed up by a standard full 3 year/5000 hour warranty. Increased Fuel Efficiency With power provided by new Doosan and Scania Stage V 6-cylinder engines, the DL-7 wheel loaders provide up to 5% greater fuel efficiency than the previous generation machines, whilst delivering impressive output and torque. The new engines meet Stage V emission regulations without the need for exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), through the use of selective catalyst reduction, diesel oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filter (DPF) after-treatment technologies. The soot cleaning cycle on the DPF has been improved to over 6000 h and the operator is fully informed about the status of the DPF via a soot level indicator on the new touchscreen display in the cab. With no EGR needed and a new selection of power modes available - SAT2, Standard or Power - the new generation Situation Awareness Technology (SAT2) power management system automatically scans the machine’s activity and adjusts the engine’s output according to real time analysis of the boom pressure, pump pressure and output shaft. The Doosan Smart Guidance System (DSGS) is a new feature which analyses the driving habits and behaviour of the operator and helps them to achieve the most fuel-efficient operation. The DSGS provides a score and guide (the Score-Graph) of the operator’s driving pattern to show fuel economy, efficiency and durability by category. The Score-Graph shows the level of efficiency Orange, 0-50% = improvement in settings highly recommended Yellow, 50-70% = improvements in settings recommended Green, 70-100% = good operation and settings DoosanCONNECT Fleet Management System as Standard The DL-7 wheel loaders are factory-installed with the latest DoosanCONNECT TMS2.0 state-of-art wireless fleet monitoring system. VALVES
INFLATABLE SEATED BUTTERFLY VALVE An inflatable seated butterfly valve designed for dry bulk solids or liquid slurry applications is available from Posi-flate. The valve is ideally suited for abrasive materials such as sand, feldspar, fly ash and most other dry, granular materials, which reduce valve life. The inflatable seat design provides a better seal by utilizing air pressure to expand the seat against the disc, providing more sealing area and an even pressure distribution against the disc every time. The seat automatically compensates for wear when it inflates against the disc, extending valve life considerably. Because the Posi-flate disc only makes casual contact with the seat during opening and closing, torque requirements are substantially lower. This ease of movement also allows the disc to come to a perfect 90-degree position every time. Additionally, the smooth profile of the disc helps material flow easier and reduces build-up. For unique fail-safe monitoring, a pressure switch can be utilized to verify a perfect seal. Two Series are available, a one-piece housing with separate shaft and disc and a split housing design with integral disc and shaft. Standard sizes range from 2 (50mm) to 30 (750mm). The valves are available in a wide variety of construction materials. Posi-flate Milton Keynes, United Kingdom +44 (0)1908 622366 sales@posiflate.co.uk www.posiflate.com
