DAVIES TURNER AIR CARGO POWERS UP WITH DOOSAN ELECTRIC TRUCKS With an annual turnover in excess of £170 million, Davies Turner is one of the UK’s leading logistics and freight forwarding businesses, operating across 23 branches and commanding over 1.6 million sq ft of warehousing space nationwide. Celebrating 150 years of successful growth in 2020, the company prides itself on its reputation for customer service, operational efficiency and environmental performance. At the company’s Heathrow hub over 2 million kilos a month are processed in a 24/7 operation that demands maximum efficiency from its fleet of nine forklift trucks. Fast and efficient handling of consignments is critical to hitting the deadlines and rapid turnaround required. Under these pressing conditions the dayto-day performance of the handling equipment underpins the business – reliability is everything. Traditionally, gas powered vehicles are used in heavy lifting, in-door, multi-shift, applications. However when Davies Turner came to review their fleet in early 2018 they took the opportunity to explore the possibility of replacing their gas trucks with battery powered vehicles from Doosan. Importantly, the move would help support the business in its application for environmental standard ISO 14001 by offering cleaner, quieter, more environmentally friendly handling operations. Davies Turner were confident that the Doosan electric trucks would be quieter and cleaner, however, their concern was whether electric trucks could perform as efficiently in a fastmoving environment. Importantly, too, how would the costs compare with gas? Would the outlay on the extra batteries needed for a threeshift operation make it cost-effective? 4

Bulk Solids Today

In the spring of 2018 Doosan’s latest feature-rich electric B35X-7 3.5 tonne counterbalance trucks were supplied, along with a spare high-capacity battery for each truck, backed up by Fronius chargers with an auto-fill facility for efficient battery management. Easy-access side panels on the trucks allowed for a fast changeover of batteries using a powered pallet truck, ensuring a continuous and reliable operation. In addition to the 3.5 tonne capacity electric counterbalance trucks, a new Doosan BR16JW-7 1.6 tonne reach truck was supplied with a 6.5m mast, as well as a compact, Doosan B18X-7 1.8 capacity counterbalance truck – both well suited for duties within Davies Turner’s racked storage area. However, the benefits of transitioning from gas to electric go far beyond a cleaner, quieter working environment. There is a significant cost difference too. The outlay of £15.00 per day per truck for gas has been replaced with the cost for charging a truck at £5 per day. ROI was achieved within 16 months. The reduced downtime has been another major factor. With the electric trucks there are far fewer parts to maintain and you do not get the problem of overheating engines.

A further benefit is the Doosan Fleet Management System, which enables users to access up-to-themoment information on their fleet, log breakdowns and reference maintenance records. Health and safety was a vital consideration when it came to selecting Doosan as the supplier of choice across the fleet. In addition to Doosan’s comprehensive range of safety features, included as standard, Davies Turner specified the inclusion of the Davies Derby access control system on each truck, along with the blue spot pedestrian warning light, auto levelling forks, LED spotlights and red LED proximity lights. Speed limiters were also set for 7mph, slowing automatically to 5mph on corners for greater stability and safety. Further aiding productivity, safety fork positioners were fitted to allow the operator to adjust the forks from the safety of the cab. In conclusion Davies Turner have found that their drivers have responded very well to the changeover to the Doosan electric trucks. As well as the benefits already listed they have found them far more responsive than the gas trucks. The overall message? They cannot fault them.

MIXING OF POWDERS – NEW CHALLENGES CONCERNING ALLERGEN HANDLING, AVOIDING CROSS CONTAMINATION AND MINIMISING CLEANING DOWNTIME Mixing of powders is an essential process in various industries from chemical, pharmaceutical to food. Short mixing times and excellent homogeneity while offering gentle product handling are standard challenges in defining modern mixing processes. The addition of ingredients in very low concentrations demands optimal solutions for automatic dosing as well the selection of an appropriate mixer. Recently, other process criteria have also become the focus of producers. Recipes change more often. Cross contamination between different recipes must be avoided for reasons of product purity, minimising the risk of allergen contamination and to ensure correct compliance with labelling regulations. The design of mixers, as well as the complete mixing processes, for this so called “hygienic execution” is very demanding. The key to increased productivity is the ease of cleaning, since cleaning time is dominating downtime. In the 8

Bulk Solids Today

food industry, dry cleaning is the preferred option, as the risk of bacteria growth is reduced and also drying time is eliminated. Gericke is a pioneer in designing powder mixers for hygienic and other demanding applications. Based on sound scientific knowledge, extensive tests and the experience from many installations around the globe, the double shaft mixer GMS Mixer has become the technological leader in the mixer market. New options and functionalities make the GMS now even more versatile and it is available in sizes from 140 liters up to 5’000 liters. Extremely high mixing quality for micro components, short mixing time, gentle to the mixing ingredients and very easy to clean: This characterizes the GERICKE GMS mixer and is Gericke’s answer to the needs of the food, pharmaceutical and chemical industries where hygiene demands have become more and more stringent and product quality is of utmost importance. Easy to clean and hygienic

During the redesign of the GMS mixer family, optimal cleaning allowing the operator a safe and full access to the inside of the machine has been the focus of development. Full access to the mixing chamber, shaft sealing, discharge opening and inlet flanges is mandatory to allowing dry cleaning in a short time. Even in the standard execution, the mixer front can be opened by a huge swivelling door. In the GMS ECD version (Extractable Cantilevered Drive) the whole drive unit, including mixing rotors, can easily be extracted from the body, thus the mixing housing is empty and optimally accessible for cleaning. However, seemingly small construction details can heavily influence the speed of cleaning. How is the access to the outlet of the mixer? Can the shaft sealings quickly be dismantled for inspection or cleaning? These are two of many examples how the GMS mixers are optimally suited for the handling of allergens and highly demanding products.

MIDLAND PALLET TRUCKS CONTINUES TO EXPAND WITH INTRODUCTION OF NEW EQUIPMENT A leading West Midlands provider of manual handling equipment is continuing its expansion through strategic inventory growth. Midland Pallet Trucks, which offers lift tables, machinery jacks, and other effective tools for warehouse environments, has broadened its existing range of hand pallet trucks with the introduction of a new heavy duty economic model, providing more buying choice for customers. The new economic pallet truck features both nylon steer wheels and load wheels, and is capable of moving up to 2000kg loads, making it suitable for high capacity needs. The deliberate design and 540x1150mm length across the forks makes the new hand pallet truck perfectly compatible with the Euro Pallet which, at 120x80cm, is one of the most common sizes of pallet currently handled in the UK. However, for those faced with more varied loads, the latest introduction to the catalogue will also fit larger pallets, including the 120x100cm pallet which is also common in warehouses. “It’s great to see the UK warehousing industry performing so well at the moment, but we understand that their needs

are changing in response to supplier changes and import load changes,” says Midland Pallet Trucks Managing Director, Phil Chesworth. “That’s why we believe that now more than ever it’s vital that we’re ensuring our clients have easy access to a wide range of handling equipment, making it less challenging for them to adapt to operating in a post-Brexit landscape.” Midland Pallet Trucks is known for being highly selective and has chosen the economic hand pallet truck for its ability to not only facilitate smoother processes but also boost worker safety. The new addition comes with a 3-position handle for ease of use and improved handling control, as well as CE approval which confirms that the product meets the health, safety, and environmental requirements in the EU. The equipment also comes with an EC Declaration of Conformity which states that the pallet truck meets safety criteria.

At a time when businesses across many industries are still struggling to recover from the uncertainties of Brexit, Midland Pallet Trucks is growing notably. The new economic hand pallet truck is just the latest in a long line of new offerings from the materials handling equipment expert. Just recently, Midland Pallet Trucks introduced four new semi-electric and fully-electric models that had been specially designed to boost health and safety in the workplace through ergonomic features and ease of use. VALVES

INFLATABLE SEATED BUTTERFLY VALVE The Posi-flate inflatable seated butterfly valve is ideally suited for abrasive materials such as sand, feldspar, fly ash and most other dry, granular materials which reduce valve life. The inflatable seat design provides a better seal by utilizing air pressure to expand the seat against the disc, providing more sealing area and an even pressure distribution against the disc every time. The seat automatically compensates for wear when it inflates against the disc, extending valve life considerably. Because the Posi-flate disc only makes casual contact with the seat during opening and closing, torque requirements are substantially lower. This ease of movement also allows the disc to come to a perfect 90-degree position every time. Additionally, the smooth profile of the disc helps material flow easier and reduces build-up. For unique fail-safe monitoring, a pressure switch can be utilized to verify a perfect seal. Standard sizes range from 2 (50mm) to 30 (750mm). The valves are available in a wide variety of construction materials including stainless steel and aluminum. ENHANCED PLASTIC EURO PALLET OUTPERFORMS ITS WOODEN RIVAL As more companies automate their materials handling and storage operations, the need for reliable pallets that can go the distance has never been greater. With Goplasticpallets.com’s enhanced plastic Euro E7 pallet, it’s ‘all systems go’ thanks to its seamless integration with automated handling systems. The enhanced plastic Euro E7 pallet The enhanced plastic Euro E7 pallet offers all the advantages of a classic wooden Euro-pallet whilst guaranteeing better performance and large potential savings in automated operations, where they are already being successfully deployed for a number of heavy line retail applications. In a recent study from Virginia Tech University based on an industrial survey, more than half of the 259 respondents admitted to pallet-related issues with automated equipment occurring on a daily or weekly basis, largely as a result of poor quality or damaged wooden pallets. Commenting on the study Jim Hardisty, Managing Director for Goplasticpallets.com, said: “When companies are looking to invest in automated equipment, pallets are often the last thing they consider. As pallet quality can have such a major impact on operational efficiency in automated handling scenarios, it’s crucial that pallets are considered much earlier on in the purchase process.” One of the major benefits of Goplasticpallets.com’s Euro E7 pallet is that is has the exact dimensions of a wooden Euro-pallet – measuring 1200mm (L) x 800mm (W) x 144mm (H) – so it can be easily integrated into automated systems that have already been customised for wooden pallets. Yet, unlike a wooden pallet made from loose component parts and nails that can hamper automated systems, the Euro E7 is moulded from highquality HDPE plastic, which guarantees 100% dimensional accuracy therefore eliminating machine disruption and operational downtime.

This means that the plastic Euro E7 pallet can run in a conveyor system parallel to existing wooden pallets without any need for adjustment, equally, it can also be used as a shuttle for any defective wooden pallets. Red anti-slip strips and stoppers are a standard feature... The plastic Euro E7 pallet comes on three runners with steel bars in the deck for enhanced strength and stability – even with the heaviest loads. When static the pallet can bear a tremendous 5000kg, whilst on the move it can support 1500kg and 1250kg in racking. Red anti-slip strips and stoppers are a standard feature of the plastic Euro E7 pallet, but there are also several options to customise the pallet to suit different applications. Up to seven optional steel supports in a range of profile thicknesses make it possible to customise the load-bearing capacity of the pallet. RFID tags can also be added for more accurate tracking and transparency. As standard the pallet comes in black with red anti-slip strips with or without lips, but for orders of 500+ units other colour options are available, as well as printing of a company name or logo. In terms of investment, a wooden Euro pallet is approximately a third cheaper than the plastic Euro E7, however taking into account the long service life of the plastic pallet and low follow on costs, in the mid to long term companies can achieve significant savings. These include lower transport costs thanks to its low net weight of just 16kg, lower repackaging costs, lower cleaning costs thanks to the pallets easy-to-clean hygienic surfaces and less process downtime. In addition, like all of Goplasticpallets.com’s plastic pallets, the Euro E7 pallet retains its material value at the end of its operational life, when it can then be 100% recycled and turned into a new, long life pallet. For more information about the enhanced plastic Euro E7 pallet, call the pallet experts at Goplasticpallets. com on 01323 744057 or email your enquiry to sales@ goplasticpallets.com.

BULK MATERIALS HANDLING

AJAX AGITATED SCREW FEEDER FOR PAINT PRODUCTION Solids handling equipment maker, Ajax Equipment, has supplied a paints and coatings solutions manufacturer with a stainless-steel agitated screw feeder and transition chute. The agitated screw feeder is similar to many previous machines supplied, still in use in another part of the manufacturer’s facility. The new feeder features a transition chute enabling the feeder to be supplied from intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) and a longer screw to meet the needs of the facility layout as well as enabling the screw to be retracted. Retracting the feeder’s screw makes cleaning both the screw and the machine internally easier when changing IBCs. “Agitated screw feeders are often used with materials that are inherently susceptible to arching or where flow rates are low for gravity flow. Above the screw, blades rotate within a hopper at right angles to the screw; this agitates the material, as well as directing downwards towards the screw,” says Eddie McGee, managing director, Ajax Equipment. “Ajax’s agitated screw feeders have separate drives for the screw and agitator to ensure that the speed of the agitator can be optimised independently than that of the screw.” For more information on Ajax Equipment hoppers and hopper inserts, call +44 (0)1204 386723, email sales@ajax.co.uk and visit www.ajax.co.uk.

High Efficiency Drying or Cooling of Bulk Solids The Bella dryer/cooler offers thermal efficiencies to 80 percent or better because air flows around material while it is suspended in the weightless zone. The result is a more consistent material.

MIXERS, BLENDERS & DRYERS

ROTARY CONTINUOUS BULK SOLIDS MIXER FOR HIGH VOLUME APPLICATIONS A new sanitary Model RCM36X9SS Rotary Continuous Mixer from Munson Machinery blends dry bulk solids with or without liquid additions, inline at low cost over long production runs. Intended for dust-free mixing of bulk materials in large volumes, it blends primary bulk ingredients, minor ingredients, and/or liquid additions and coatings uniformly with little or no degradation. It features a stationary inlet, a stationary outlet, a rotating drum with smooth interior surfaces and proprietary mixing flights that impart a gentle tumbling action, distributing particles with each degree of drum rotation, imparting no shear or energy into the material. Unlike mixers with agitators that are forced through stationary material, the rotary continuous design has no internal moving parts and lower power requirements; a 2.24 kW electric motor rotates the drum at 8 to 10 RPM. Optional stainless steel piping with nozzles allows uniform spraying of liquid additives onto a wide expanse of cascading material produced by the internal flights, minimising the time required to coat all particles uniformly. A weir (dam) at the discharge end of the drum creates a build-up of blended material that overflows the weir and discharges the mixer at rates 18

determined by the residence volume of the rotating cylinder and the rate of material inflow. A reversing discharge weir is available to fully evacuate material at the end of production runs, allowing cleaning or sanitising. Other models are offered in diameters from 40 to 180 cm, in lengths from 120 to 730 cm. Typical applications include bulk foods such as cereals, powdered drink mixes, snack foods and pet foods, and bulk chemicals such as detergents, catalysts, polymers, pesticides and fertilisers. Other mixing and blending equipment produced by the company includes Rotary Batch Mixers, Ribbon/Paddle/Plough Blenders, Vee-Cone Blenders, Fluidised Bed Mixers and Variable Intensity Blenders. Size reduction equipment includes Pin Mills, Attrition Mills, De-Clumper™ Lump Breakers, SCC™ Screen Classifying Cutters, Rotary Knife Cutters, HammerHead™ Hammer Mills and Titan™ Shredders. PURE ADDED VALUE Oven belts made of glass hybrid fabric are setting new benchmarks in the production of nonwovens Weighing just 1.8 kilograms per square meter, this innovative belt construction from the leading international technical weavers GKD, is an energyefficient lightweight in dryer operation. At the same time, the material combination of metal and fiberglass significantly increases process efficiency thanks to its highly resistant PFA-coating. Even when using BiCo fibers, it reliably protects the wires and the intersections between the chain and weft against adhesions. Neither fibers nor binders are deposited in the fiberglass strands or between the wires. This minimized soiling means production speeds can be significantly increased. The high transverse stability of this type of belt is crucial in optimizing the process quality and product quality: Even for products with large weaving widths or strong shrinkage forces, the single-ply belt construction impresses thanks to its excellent running properties. In the upper belt, magnetic steel weft wires, which are over 0.8 millimeters thick, reliably hold the belt on the magnetic strips. The resulting absolute flatness guarantees exact calibration and compression. When used as a lower belt, a stainless steel weft wire guarantees similar transverse stability. Even highly voluminous and significantly compacted products obtain a constant thickness and density over the entire width, with minimal tolerances. Years of runtime for the upper and lower belt Glass hybrid belts by GKD are characterized by an even mesh opening with high air permeability. The fiberglass strands are temperature resistant up to 250 degrees Celsius, thus preventing belt elongation. In addition, the intricate PTFE edge coating also makes the belts more durable: This very smooth and absolutely straight cut edge makes reliable belt control easier. Furthermore, the sewn, non-marking pin seam guarantees impression-free production of nonwovens. The growing demand for use as the upper and lower belt is a striking reflection of all the advantages of GKD glass hybrid belts. Initially installed by plant manufacturers as the upper belt in dryers, these belts have been running since 2016 and have far exceeded the expectations of the first users. Compared to glass gauze belts, which often only last for a few months in wide thermal bonding plants, the years of runtime provided by glass hybrid belts have compensated for the higher procurement price several times over during the first year alone. The result is that more and more users have installed this type of belt as the lower belt too, where it has been running with great success for about a year and a half. So, overall, GKD’s glass hybrid belts have proven their worth as a sustainable, economic solution for thermal bonding processes due to their durability, increased productivity, minimized cleaning intervals and higher production speeds - with better product quality to boot.

FAST, HIGH CAPACITY PRECISION MIXING

The new Bella XN double shafted Fluidized Zone Mixer by Dynamic Air includes access doors which not only increase accessibility but also make it much easier to clean when necessary. The Bella mixer achieves fast, high capacity, low shear, precision mixing of either dry bulk solids or liquids with solids. Regardless of particle size, shape or density, materials are mixed with a fast, efficient, and gentle action - typical mixing times are 60 seconds or less. A weightless zone created by low-speed counter rotating shafts generates very low friction without shear. This makes it ideal for fragile products that cannot tolerate rough handling. Even flakes or spray-dried bodies remain intact. The Bella XN mixer includes twin bomb-bay door openings for fast, efficient discharging and to minimize segregation during discharge. The Bella mixer is available in stainless steel for sanitary applications. Custom sizes, finishes and materials of construction are available upon request. http://www.dynamicair.com/products/mixer_ b350xn.html Dynamic Air Ltd. MIXERS, BLENDERS & DRYERS

BOONE MIXERS ARE AT THE CENTRE OF BASF’S NEW RODENTICIDES LINE Boone Mixers have supplied two Horizontal Helical Blade Mixers (HHBM) to BASF in Widnes for their new production line, manufacturing rodenticides with a marzipan-like texture to meet the growing demand world-wide for alternatives to warfarin as rodents develop resistance and traditional rodenticides become less effective. BASF have developed a rodenticide that combats the increasing problem of evolving drug resistance, while being very palatable to encourage the animals to consume the bait. As customers world-wide take up the new product, BASF needed a new production line and following extensive tests the new Boone HHBM mixers were selected as a key part of that development. The base of the product is a simple mix of fat, sugar and flour, mixed in the Boone HHBM mixer with the ‘active’ components. The mixed product is a crumb mix that is then formed into small blocks and packed for use. Although the end products may be very different, in some ways the challenge of mixing the product is very similar to any other crumb, even crumble dessert topping. It has

20

to be thoroughly and homogenously mixed, including micro-ingredients, while not overworking the mixture, which would compact it and make it difficult to form. Boone HHBM accomplishes this using a low mixer speed and omega shaped mixer shell with a unique, high efficiency interrupted spiral mixer blade configuration. This has a low surface area mixer blade that reduces energy input to the mix and is easy to clean. The omega shaped mixer shell is ‘short and tall’, so end-to-end mixing is optimised, and the mix fully discharges through a knife gate for packaging. Boone also designed and supplied the liquid oil spray feed system to match BASF’s specification which together with a heating and cooling jacket to control mix temperature and extend the range of products that can be made in the HHBM. Because of the ingredients used, the mixer, inlets and outlet are designed for ATEX internal/external Zone 20/22. The Boone Standard ATEX Mixers and ancillary equipment are designed to meet that standard. According to Benjamin Charnock, Facilities manager at BASF, ‘Production is ramping up, and we need to respond to the demand. The Boone mixer is helping us to do that, and we are planning to build and add another line in the very near future.’ (HHBM are also known as Ribbon Mixers)

SPECIAL FEATURE

TENOVA TAKRAF STORAGE SOLUTIONS FOR SOLID FERTILIZER PRODUCTS By Ralf Katzke, Scraper Reclaimer Technologies, Tenova TAKRAF Dry bulk fertilizer products, whether they be within fertilizer factories or at shipping or receiving points, are mainly stored in stockpiles. Employing a pile instead of a high silo is an economical solution for large volumes. In most circumstances, the stockpiles are covered in order to protect both the environment, as the product is prevented from being blown around, and the product itself as it is shielded from being affected by adverse weather conditions. In most instances where a fertilizer product boasts both a consistent composition and quality from an upstream chemical process, the piles also often function as buffer storage. The piles are thus employed to balance time and volume between production and shipping or to balance reception during interim storage and onward transport to users. In other instances where there is very little or no consistency – specifically when mined ores of varying qualities and/or characteristics arrive at a chemical plant and require homogenization prior to a chemical process – piles can also be employed as a blending bed. This is often the case for large fertilizer storages, especially those with high throughputs for either stacking, reclaiming or both, and are usually equipped with fully automated stockyard machines. LEVERAGING MORE THAN 50 YEARS OF FERTILIZER INDUSTRY STOCKYARD MACHINE EXPERTISE Tenova TAKRAF is a global OEM for mining and bulk handling equipment with a history dating back almost 300 years. The company boasts a successful 50 year plus track record of supplying stockyard machines to the global fertilizer industry, with its first scraper reclaimer (for a potash factory) being supplied in 1966. Since then, the company has designed, manufactured, supplied and successfully commissioned around 400 scraper reclaimers across various commodities with a large majority being employed in the effective handling of potash, urea, phosphates and sulphur. Tenova TAKRAF’s approach to this vast array of global projects is “flexibility”. This means they treat the specific requirements of each project in a unique manner, ranging from the supply of a single machine to various machine packages and/or delivery of a complete bulk conveyor system including storage bin machines, conveyor belts and loading & unloading equipment. Such complete handling systems leverage an extended and well established material handling 22

portfolio covering stockyard / disposal facilities, loading / un-loading equipment, conveying, port facilities and in-plant handling equipment. STACKING AND RECLAIMING In most instances, a storage facility is fed material through a network of conveyors that efficiently carry the product to be stored. In order to achieve an optimal pile width within the storage area, the stacking of material is carried out via overhead tripper cars. Having supplied machines with capacities of up to 4,000 t/h, Tenova TAKRAF boasts significant experience in the supply of these under-roof tripper cars. For the recovery of product from a pile, scraper reclaimers are the preferred (and dominant) equipment of choice for operators and planners alike. Some of the advantages of these machines include: • Proven robustness and reliability • High efficiency and low operating costs • Simple and steady working movements allowing for full automation • Gentle treatment of material and almost dust-free handling of fertilizer products MAXIMUM STORAGE SPACE IN INDOOR AREAS As a result of general market developments and increasing fertilizer logistic requirements, the global demand for storage volumes and handling capacities is increasing. This growing demand has resulted in large pile widths, sometimes even exceeding 60 m. For such indoor applications, the portal reclaimer, which boasts separate main and auxiliary reclaiming booms, is the preferred solution, as it requires a minimum amount of space due to its shape. This results in the maximum covered storage space for the product stack. Depending on bulk products’ densities, Tenova TAKRAF is able to supply portal reclaimers with handling capacities of up 6,000 t/h and with rail-spans that can exceed 60 m. SPECIAL FEATURES OF STOCKYARD MACHINES THAT HANDLE FERTILIZER As previously mentioned, scraper reclaimers are, due to their method of operation, very gentle in their treatment of material and thus operate with minimal dust creation. This makes them ideally suited to fertilizer material that often comes in granulated form. This gentle treatment of a material, together with the minimization of dust, also applies in principle to all equipment within the fertilizer handling value chain including boom stackers and/or overhead tripper cars. These machines, which generally employ cone

SPECIAL FEATURE

shell stacking for the minimization of dust, can also be equipped with lowering booms or special chutes in order to further improve handling and dust minimization. Nevertheless, depending on the characteristics of the fertilizer product and our customers’ unique requirements, Tenova TAKRAF is able to equip their scraper reclaimers and stockyard machines with special features such as: • Stainless steel design for blades and chutes • “De-lumpers” arranged within the discharge chutes for the breaking up (“de-lumping”) of caked bulk material • Hoses on hose reels for fresh air supply to operator cabins • Life-time lubricated outboard roller chains • ATEX-certified components in case of inflammable / explosive bulk material such as sulphur CRITERIA THAT MAY INFLUENCE THE CHOSEN BULK STORAGE ARRANGEMENT In addition to the globally popular solution of employing portal reclaimers in combination with overhead tripper cars for indoor fertilizer storage facilities, other alternative solutions can potentially also be employed or be even better suited in certain specific instances. Spending the time to properly evaluate all options and making an informed decision based on all factors including the overall space situation, storage shed design & structure and/or on individual mass flows, may mean that the following machine solutions might be an even more suitable choice: • A stacker with tripper-car travelling on ground along the pile • A combined stacker / reclaimer • A circular storage arrangement In addition, the requirement for homogenization may also bear significant influence on equipment selection. Nowadays, very light building structures even for

large shed dimension are available and quite commonplace. Often, these light building structures do not allow for any under-roof installation of incoming conveyors with a travelling tripper car. In such cases, an alternative approach in combination with such a light building structure might employ an on-ground travelling stacker. In such instances where all equipment is installed at a ground level, access to equipment for maintenance is significantly safer and more efficient as an additional benefit. If space at the site is limited, then a circular buffer storage facility may turn out to be the most effective spacesaving solution. Bulk material is stored against a retention wall, with both stacker and reclaimer mounted on a central column. In circular buffer storage solutions, the feeding of the pile is conducted via a boom stacker employing the cone shell stacking method. Reclaiming is accomplished via a cantilever reclaimer, which conveys material into a central chute located below the central column. From this central column, material is then fed, via a feeder, to the outgoing conveyor. In operations where material logistics can be managed in such a manner so as to avoid simultaneous stacking and reclaiming operations, a combined stacker / scraper reclaimer can also be an effective cost saving solution. In this instance, stacker and scraper booms are mounted on the same chassis resulting in substantial cost savings not only for the equipment itself but also in reduced rail lengths and fewer conveyors being required. PRODUCT CONSISTENCY THROUGH HOMOGENIZATION / BLENDING In instances where fertilizer originates from mined ores and/or where variations exceeding the acceptable product range can be expected, material consistency can then be at risk. In order to protect against such consistency issues, the stockpile may, in addition to its buffer function, also be given the additional task of homogenization / blending. Blending beds generally operate in an adjusted combination of chevron-stacking and front-reclaiming. The stockpile is built up according to the so-called “chevron method” in a longitudinal stockpile, or the so-called “chevcone method” in a circular stockpile. In both methods however, stacking is required to achieve a sufficient number of material layers. Reclaiming is then conducted via a bridge-type reclaimer, which takes material from the front side of the stockpile. In this manner, reclaiming achieves a perfect mixture of material, depending on the number of layers and the incoming deviation and/or distribution.
